Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's five o'clock.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Got yours huge day? The two Sun Roadrunners Happy Out
from Fox Sports fourteen fifty AF Jonathan Right.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
We know the story, but you gotta tell the viewers
that starts so funny.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
It's our usual Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (00:17):
Night, So I don't know. Maybe we should start implementing.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Some breakdance pregames during the season and see how that goes.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Right here on Tucson Sports DA yet Fox Sports fourteen
fifty A.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Fox Sports fourteen fifty am our usual Tuesday night get together.
Roadrunners Happy are Jonathan Schaeffer with my co host as
always Kim Coda Roblez Roadrunners coming off of a series
split against the San Jose Bear Kuda. We are now
in Bakersfield getting ready for a huge matchup against the
Bakersfield Condors, a very big playoff implicating single game series.
(00:53):
We're gonna have Jackson Stobber on this show when he
joins us. The guys are getting ready for a huge matchup. Kim,
to see you again, and how's it going? It will
take the series split and San Jose Right, first game
went well, uh snapped the eight game slide. Sammy Walker
quite the debut for himself, two goals to assist for
four points. He is the only Roadrunner now this season
(01:16):
to out four points in a game, and he did
it all in his first matchup, won us a big one,
four to three. Second game, didn't win it, but it
was It was still pretty good Roadrunner hockey.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
We were well within the game San Jose.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Just a bit too much for us in that second matchup,
so we'll take it. It's a it's a marathon, not
a sprint, and we move on to now a huge
matchup in Bakersfield.
Speaker 5 (01:38):
Hi, it's good to see you. I'm doing well. Yes,
this uh, this season on the two Sun Roadrunners has
been absolutely so dramatic since gosh, since the homestand there's
there's been so much happening it's it's impossible to keep
(01:59):
straight everything that is going on right now. Hopefully all
the fans have their head on a swivel and are
paying attention because even to add to everything that you
just talked about, we just got Josh Jones back, which
is incredible news. I know, I know the fans are
very excited about that. I am hopeful that.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
I know it's.
Speaker 5 (02:20):
Difficult for Josh probably going up and then coming back
and you know he wants to be there and he
wants to be making that impact there, but he is
so profoundly impactful here. I don't know about you, but
I am beyond stoked, Like I don't even know, just
like there's no word beyond stoked for how excited I
am to see him and also to see him play
(02:41):
with Sammy.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, it's it's we don't know what the lines will be.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Obviously, well we'll see where Josh Stones gonna get plugged into.
But Kim, I have no cla how long he'll be here.
It can all be for the rest of this trip
because the reasoning the four nation face off, the four
Nations face offs starting in just a few days. Yeah,
Doan's not playing in that, so they sent him back
here to get them playing time, help the road Runners
(03:07):
get some wins together. I just don't know if this
is a rest of the season thing or he'll be
back with Utah once the NHL your season starts again.
So yeah, it's interesting to see. But regardless, we're always
always welcome Josh dooneback with open arms and smiling faces,
happy to see him again because every time he goes
(03:28):
back up we always think is this the is this
the last time?
Speaker 4 (03:31):
You know? Well, when will we see him again?
Speaker 5 (03:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:33):
And yeah, he will always be in the Arizona area
with you know, seeing his parents and all. But uh,
at the same time, like it's it's always weird with
with a guy like don't right, it's always the uh,
never come back.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
We don't want to see you again, but we miss you.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
Yeah, he is a bittersweet return for sure, bitter sweet return.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
And uh yeah, I don't I don't know if the
fans to Tuson will get to see him when we
come back home after the Gem Show trip. I have
no idea, but like I just said, we will take
it because Rivers need a guy like Doan. You know,
it's it's been tough to get wins since Doan was
called up because you know, he was he was playing
some of his best hockey of his AHL career. He's
(04:11):
done fantastic in the NHL uh since his return there too,
But going back to US, he was playing great. He
was announced to the All Star Games, he was called
up the same day, and then since then the Roadrunners
have been only to get two wins in about eleven games.
Of course, doesn't help that Andre Guzel and Kevin can
not happen out too. But those two are looking good.
(04:34):
They've been on the ice practicing. They're with us on
this trip.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
So they're with us on the trip because we don't
have ice back at Tucson. It's the Gem Show, so
they they had to come with us. They're not they're
not fully practicing with everybody, but they're going on the
ice about an hour before, uh, just you know, trying
to you know, work out the kings, see what's still
bothering them, what's not. So it's going very well. Still
no time table for each of their returns, but it's
(05:02):
it's looking good. And I've, like we've said before, just
just keep surviving, right, just trying to muster up as
many wins as you can. We are four points out
of the final playoff spot and a huge matchup against
the Condors, who have the final playoff spot. The moment
Tucson got that one winning Santos on Friday, Bakersfield just
(05:22):
had to get three out of four possible points against
the Chicago Wolves. So uh, this this matchup isn't for
seventh place, but it's a chance for the Roadrunners to
just try to gain some ground on Baker's field because
it's just so tight.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
Yeah, and this is Cameron Hebig's old team also, so
he hasn't obviously been with them for five seasons. So
it's like xx yeah yeah x x X. But but I,
you know, I do wonder if that has any bearing
on how how comfortable they feel playing on that ice,
you know, and and what that's gonna do to kind
(05:58):
of the vibe and the mentality. So I need to
say this doesn't have anything to do with Bakersfield or anything,
but I was just thinking about Cameron Hebig, and you know,
it's a little tangentle when you come to the show.
Cameron Hebig was just is just reading right now one
hundred and one short essays to make you think differently.
I think that's what he told us when we talked
(06:18):
to him a few weeks ago. So it popped up
on my Spotify as like an as an audiobook, and
I started listening to it, and it's fantastic. Anybody everybody
should listen to this. It is so so good. And
I can see the little nuggets, the little things that
Cam said to us that are also in the book
(06:38):
that like are very yeah, poignant, and like really make
you like appreciate, you know, just value your time on
this planet as a human being, and like just take
every moment in and do as best as you possibly
can and not think about the past. And I just
needed to say that because now I'm right in the
middle of one hundred and one things that'll short essays
that'll make you think different. Anyway, Highly recommend.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
I like it. Cameron Hebig had his seventeenth goal on
the Saturday Night game. Just continuing to have his career
year post All Star Break as well. Going into the
All Star he has three goals. Oh my gosh, pardon me,
I'm a little sick right now, if you folks at
home can't tell. So I'm battling out here. The weekend
(07:22):
at San Jose got a bit too much for me.
But going back to Cameron Hebig, Yeah, seventeen goals now
on the season, and he also just skated in his
two hundred and sixtieth career game with the road Runners,
and now he has tied with Michael Bunting for the
second most all time.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
Oh my gosh, that's huge, Bunting. Bunting was here for
a minute and like lots of Bunting fans still in
the seats to this day. So Cameron, I mean, Cameron
is just he's not that he wasn't to begin with,
but he has turned out to be I think one
of the most impactful players that this organization has seen
(08:01):
in its nine years ten years coming up next season, right,
been with us for half of our lives in a
road runner capacity. So yeah, every time Cameron takes the ice,
as we get to the as we get to the
you know, the end of the season and towards the postseason,
(08:24):
I am just looking for him to have more and
more of an impact. And that's just kind of again
that's the trajectory that he's been on and just been
so amazing to watch. Again, the lines will be interesting.
We don't know exactly what they're going to look like
just yet, especially with Sammy Walker here and now Josh
Done here. But that's that's part of the business, right
(08:47):
is just kind of adapting and overcome and just be
the best. Just be more successful today than you were
yesterday and then you're a winner. Like that mentality I
think definitely has been helping the guys.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yeah, and I think it's a It's a good sign
too that you know, the Roadrunners are starting to play
more of the balance game, because even though we were
losing those games at the home stand, we the only
people who are contributing to the scoring was Cameron he Big,
Kylie Yamamoto and Asaba Ganski. But post All Star and
even going into the All Star brig, we're starting to
see more guys now start to find the score set.
(09:23):
Or Sokolov has a nice four game port Street going
for himself. Hunter Drew got back on the score seet
with that primary assist on the Sokolov goal. He hit
the pipe, but he still got to insist Layden Moore.
On the Saturday game, Lane Moore had a little nice
sneaky two point night with a goal and assist as well,
so you know signs are porting their good. Of course,
(09:46):
we just saw Samuel Walker in his Roadrunners debut with
two goalton too assist Robbie Russo his first goal of
the twenty four to twenty five season coming against his
former team to San See Barracuda on that Friday night matchup.
As well, Curtis Douglass had the game winning assists on
the Sammy Walker goal. He came out of the penalty
box after we killed him crucial penalty in the third
(10:06):
period and he found Walker open for the goals.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
So it's not that those guys haven't been all working.
They have been.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
They've just been a little snake be in with the
You know, the puck is not going in the net.
It gets blocked good stayed by the goaltender. But now
that we're starting to see more of the balance of
the scoring within the team, and then you plug in
Josh Don't as well, it's a really good sign for
the Roadrunners that they can finish off this and now
we have five more games left of this Gem Show trip,
they can finish it off strong.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
I think Lighton Moore is probably one of our more
slept on players. I don't, but that's just my perception
of it. The fans may may fully be locked into him,
but he's such a startlingly good defenseman who also has
that offensive capability and and then just is also one
of those players that just vibes well with the whole
(10:55):
team and it's just really funny and anybody who follows
us on social Layton is always featured in our socials
because he is so charismatic, and I feel like he's
definitely bringing a lot of brevity into the locker room
and like he's one of those people who hockey is fun,
(11:17):
like all the time he is. That's you know, when
he's not saying boom or whatever he is on socials,
you know that he would be a hockey as fun guy.
And I feel like we need to talk to him
again soon. We talked to him so so long ago.
It was, yeah, we need to have him back in
again soon. And so I'm always a fan of seeing
(11:37):
of seeing him produced of seeing him do well because
he is definitely a guy who works really hard. And
not that not that anybody else is not working hard,
not that they don't deserve it, but when you just
look at the black and white on the stat sheet
late and more like is it's amazing that he's playing
at this level and he's just so much, so much
(11:59):
fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Yeah, And I don't know what it is with Roners'
debuts and having good games against San Jose last season.
And I talked about this game on the broadcast because
it was an insane game. Wednesday, December twentieth, we won
the game eight to six. It was the high scoring
game we've had this in the last two seasons, the
high scoring game overall between US and an opponent. We
(12:20):
saw a lot of goals against US in San Jose
in the last ten games out of total with the
two that we just played. But I don't know what
it is because Laye Moore made his AHL debut in
that game last season scored his first goal to get
the scoring going for Tucson. Fast forward to this year now,
Samuel Walker making his roadrunnersbaby nice pro hockey debut, but
his Roadrunner debut and he gets four points. So maybe
(12:43):
when we play San Jose next we just have to
call someone up or sign soone to a PTO so
that they can contribute.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Cross or something.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
Tell John Ferguson and Bill I'm strong that strategy and
see what we can get.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
To shout shout out to John Ferguson too, right for
going out and getting a guy like Sammy Walker. You know,
and I've talked to Sammy a couple of times. He's
he's great. He's a really cool dude. You fans in
Tucson are going to absolutely love him. He has a
big following with the Iowa Wild so it's a good
sign that he is. He's gonna fit very well here
(13:17):
and within the Tucson community. It can't be easy for
a guy to join a team on arguably their their
most important seven games stretch on the road of the season.
But I mean for him to come in and and
instantly impact was was absolutely huge for us. And I'm
looking forward to him being home, like when he's coming
to Tucson and finally getting settled in, and I think
the fans are gonna be super excited to uh to
(13:40):
see who he is and and meet him, because he's
just he's great.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
When I found out that we got him, I went
to the Iowa Wild social media page on Instagram to
just kind of check it out, and he's all over
it like you did before he was leaving, Like he's
all over their social media page. So he definitely must
be one of the more outspoken players on that team.
But then I was curious, has he been to Tucson,
(14:07):
do you know, like, as he had a chance to write,
live here for a second or no, did he just joined.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
To I mean, he's probably he's played here before. I
mean when the Wild would come to us last season.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
But yeah, no, but I met like since the trade,
has he had a chance to come drop his bags
off here or No?
Speaker 4 (14:25):
I don't think so, I don't.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
I didn't ask, but I want to assume because let's see,
the trade was on Monday and we left Wednesday, so no,
because I didn't see him. I never saw him at
the airport when we flew to San Jose, so I
think he met us in San Jose. So yeah, that's
it's not it can't be easy.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
Can't be easy.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
You know, you're in an All Star break, you get traded,
then all of a sudden, you have to fly to
California go on this road trip, and then you don't
even get a chance to settle in because once we
get back, we have two games right after against the
Abbotsford Canucks.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
So uh yeah, it's never easy.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
But I mean, from what I've heard or from what
he told me, he said's part of the game, it's
part of the business. He's never been a midseason trade
before or been involved in once, so he's just excited to,
uh try to help the road Runners make the playoffs.
And uh yeah, Iowa, you never know what happens if
they can turn around, but there they don't look like
they're a playoff team this year. So it's just one
(15:18):
of those instances where you you add a guy to
help you for your playoff push. So you know, he's
going from a team, UH that's probably not making playoffs
to a team that has a chance. And I think
that's what makes it more exciting. And know when you
get to play with guys like Yamamoto, Paganski don't for
the rest of this trip potentially, and then Cameron hebec
who's having his breakout year, it's gonna compliment him really well.
Speaker 4 (15:41):
We saw it.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
We've already seen his success with that Friday four point
night and hopes to do more damage against Bakersfield.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
Yeah, for sure. I don't forget Igor Soklof.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
Yeah he's been nice too.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
Yeah, he's he's doing he's having uh what I would
consider And I don't know Igor from before. I didn't
follow him stats before, but he is. He's another player
who's very entertaining to watch and when he's producing, he is,
he's out there, he's making things happen. So we just
(16:13):
need I go back, like, yeah, it would be nice,
just absolutely love to have him back. But also on
the D line, Artam Duda and Robbie Russo are absolutely
making things happen also. And the hard part I think,
and and I think for a lot of fans too
(16:34):
on on the Homestand was that the guys. I mean,
there was some off periods, but they were playing really
good hockey. They they were the score could have gone
either way, and almost every single one of those games
like they were heartbreakers, but only because the guys didn't
(16:54):
deserve to lose, like they were actually like playing, they
were playing well, they were taped to tape, portrack backcheck.
It just yeah, So the Homestand was difficult in a way,
but at the same time you were like, you know,
that's just there's just one more thing that just needs
(17:17):
to be locked in. But whatever that thing is, we
need that and then and then it'll all come together,
right And then just waiting for that, waiting for that
to happen was probably more frustrating than anything else. But
but again, we know what this team is capable of.
We have seen them and again I don't I don't
think you and I have seen them play at their
(17:38):
very best yet, So still waiting, I think that's still coming.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Yeah, it's it's been tough to win these close games
for the Roadrunners. Last season, in one goal games we
had a twenty three to five, four and two record.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
I mean that's pretty good in one goal.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Games last season for us, that was our bread and butter,
and this year just hasn't gone away as much within
the within the close games.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
So you know, that's just right, Kim.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
You know, we just need to start finding ways to
get that last shot on goal or that last save
or just last anything, because yeah, there's been a couple
of heartbreakers in the recent eight game losing skid.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Great for the team to snap it.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Jackson Stauber was a big part of that as well,
made twenty six saves on twenty nine shots to get
the road Runs back in the winning call.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
Um.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
He's joining us very soon on this show as well.
And you know, and as like I said, it's a marathon,
not a sprint. Obviously, you wanted to that Saturday afternoon
win as well, but you can't expect to all a
sudden win ten in a row after just losing eight.
It takes time, and hopefully the Roadrunners can get one
against Bakersfield. I think that's the one you want to
(18:46):
definitely win. Whatever happens Ontario, happens in Ontario, because Ontario's
been good this year as well. But this is a
big game coming up against the Condors.
Speaker 5 (18:55):
I would be okay if we wanted to do to
do a ten game streak, I'm knocking on with I
would be okay if we decided to do that at this.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
Point, wouldn't might have adult now joining us? Number thirty
goaltender Jackson stopber Jackson. Thanks for joining us, man, I
appreciate you coming on the show.
Speaker 6 (19:16):
Yeah, thank you for having me.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Oh, so, you've had a whirlwind of a season, right
you're back with the road Runners, but you had some
time to with the Utah Hockey Club earlier this season,
got the first shutout in team history. You had a
couple more successful games with them as well, and you
know signing here as a free agent this past offseason
as well. So what's it all been like for you
(19:39):
of your twenty four to twenty five year. How can
you describe of what it's been like for you?
Speaker 7 (19:45):
I think you going the year just excited to kind
of get going for the opportunity, but you don't really
have any expectations of maybe what's going to happen, so
you know, to get that call up and have some
success up there was a lot of fun and it
was great, you know, being with a new organization and
obviously Utah's new to everyone, so it was it was
fun to you know, to be a part of that
and experience that and see the fans and the passion
(20:06):
that they have, and like you said, being down here
in Tucson's been good. Obviously we've been struggling a bit
as of late, but you know, overall, I think, you know,
we're building and we've had a pretty good year.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
We haven't had a chance to have you on the
show yet, so welcome to our show, you know, for
your first time, and we haven't had a chance to
ask you just what the whole off season experience was like,
you know, coming to the road Runners and signing with
the team for the one year deal.
Speaker 4 (20:33):
Just what was that whole process.
Speaker 7 (20:35):
Like, Yeah, it was my first time kind of going
through that free agency, so it was a bit stressful
if I'm being honest. Thankfully, you know, I got a
deal done and I was just happy to have an
opportunity here and for a place to play.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
And yeah, so that was the biggest thing it was.
Speaker 7 (20:51):
It was a little bit stressful, but you know, once
I signed that deal, I was just kind of relieved
and eager to get here and kind of get started.
Speaker 5 (21:00):
So, Jackson, because you haven't been on our show before,
I want to I want to warn you that Johnny's
going to ask you all the really serious questions, and
I'm going to ask you the very un serious questions,
just that I can get to know you a little
bit better and the fans too, because I know the
fans have lots of questions, especially this being your first
season with US. So in researching you, I found out
(21:24):
so much about your family and I was absolutely blown away.
And I can tell by the look on your face
you know where I'm probably going with this. Your dad
played in the NHL for the Kings and the Sabers, Right.
Speaker 6 (21:38):
Yep, that's correct.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Yeah, okay, and then now he okay, and then also
he coached the US women's national team to the Olympics
in twenty eighteen, which is phenomenal. And now he owns
like a goaltending I don't know exactly what the verbiage is,
but like development skills kind of.
Speaker 6 (22:01):
Yeah, it's a training center.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
So yeah, he's got to go with training.
Speaker 7 (22:04):
Center back in Minnesota where where I'm from. He's had
that for be twenty three years now, so quite a
long time.
Speaker 5 (22:13):
Yeah, so that's.
Speaker 6 (22:14):
That's how he started.
Speaker 7 (22:15):
You know, he used to do coaching summer camps and
stuff when he was in college, right out of college,
and then just kind of continue that through his professional
career in the summers, and then you know, start his own.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
Business after he retired. So yeah, it's it's a it's
a great space. Now. I've been lucky enough to to
have him as.
Speaker 7 (22:33):
A as a dad and a mentor and a coach,
so I've learned a lot and kind of get on
the ice with him once or twice.
Speaker 5 (22:39):
Yeah, and then so is your summer? Is your summer
spent with him there working at his facility.
Speaker 6 (22:46):
I'll do a little bit of coaching there.
Speaker 7 (22:47):
I we don't skate Taylor as much as we used to,
maybe once or twice the summer now, but yeah, so
we we obviously, you know, growing up, he used to
coach me a lot, but now it's kind of a
little bit of a step back.
Speaker 5 (22:59):
So yeah, and then was at what point were you like, Okay,
I want to do this I want to do this
for real. Was it kind of implied that that this
is what you were going to do or or did
you make a decision like, okay, yeah, I'm I Actually.
Speaker 6 (23:18):
Like I was in skating lessons. I me an older
sister was a year and a half older.
Speaker 7 (23:21):
We were in skating lessons together and we're probably four
and five, and I hated it, like didn't want to
go out there, like would do snow angels on the
ice a whole nine yards, and you know, he was
pretty upset with that.
Speaker 6 (23:32):
So I didn't play hockey for probably four or five years.
Speaker 7 (23:35):
And it wasn't until I had some cousins that are
up in Northern Minnesota that were playing. They were starting
to get into it, and I'm like, yeah, like I want
to play. And so that was probably when I was
eight or nine. So that's kind of when I started playing.
And you know, I think both my parents wanted me
to play out a little bit at first, not just
gravitate towards goaltending, because obviously they thought, you know, with
(23:55):
my dad being goalie, that's what I would want to do.
But yeah, there was actually a shortage of goalies in
our organization. Probably after the first year I played, and
so of course they came to him and asked if
I play. So I did half skater, half goalie, and
then that next year.
Speaker 6 (24:10):
I transitioned to full time goalie.
Speaker 7 (24:12):
But I'd say probably when I was around high school age,
it kind of starting to take hockey a little bit
more seriously, like I'd always taken a seriously, and you know,
I think every kid dreams of playing professionally in the NHL,
but I think at that time, you know, I'd moved
high schools and stuff, so that was that was a
big commitment, and to me, that was something that was
kind of that first step into making this something that
(24:35):
you know, I felt like I could do hopefully into
college and then you know, after college as well.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
So speaking of college, going back to your dad, your
dad was the first Hobe Baker recipient who was a goaltender,
which actually never thought of that there would be a
first at a position for that award, and then you
were nominated just a few years ago. What was that
like for for both of you?
Speaker 6 (25:01):
Yeah, I think it was. I think when he won,
it was like the award had been around for I.
Speaker 7 (25:06):
Want to say, less than ten years, so it was
like a little bit of an award, but obviously, like
there's such great history with with that and there's been
so many you know, great players that have gone on
to play in the NHL that have won that award,
So I think he obviously felt really honored to win that.
Ye At the University of Minnesota where he went to school,
he did some coaching goalie coaching there as well when
(25:29):
I was growing up, So there's you know that there's
a big mural of him on the wall there, So
that's kind of what I grew.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
Up Wow, looking at looking at like walking into the.
Speaker 7 (25:38):
Rink, and the biggest guy in the rinks my dad.
So that's, uh, it's pretty cool to see that. And yeah,
just just to even be nominated for it, you know,
with with the history that he had, was pretty special.
Speaker 6 (25:50):
You know, that's a little bit of a connection that
we have.
Speaker 5 (25:52):
So yeah, so then you your older sister Ruby and
your younger sister Lula, Right did they do?
Speaker 7 (26:01):
My older sister was a track and field athlete. She
also played soccer in high school, but she ran track collegiately.
So yeah, she ran for LSU, Vanderbilt, and Florida State.
So she kind of did a little bit of a tour,
but yeah, she was phenomenal, one of the top eight
hundred meter runners in the country coming out of high school. Unfortunately,
(26:22):
she had some injuries in college. It kind of set
some things back.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
But yeah, I was, you know, growing up.
Speaker 7 (26:28):
You know, she was always extremely successful in her athletics,
so that always motivated me to kind of want to
be better and push myself to do more. So I
got to give her a lot of credit for that.
My younger sister, Lula's big into horseback riding.
Speaker 1 (26:41):
That's kind of her big thing, but she was all.
Speaker 6 (26:44):
She does volleyball, she's played softball, so yeah.
Speaker 7 (26:48):
And then I actually have another younger sister, Ellie, but
she's just she's she's quite a bit younger, so she's
just kind of hanging out, not really you know, big
into sports at this time.
Speaker 6 (26:58):
So maybe it's points she'll get into something.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
Yeah, lots of under achievers. It sounds like in your family. Yeah,
you you and Ruby were you guys are pretty close
in age. I don't I don't know about you, but
with my brother, who's the closest behind me, we're incredibly competitive.
Are you guys like that?
Speaker 3 (27:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (27:19):
Yeah, we are, we would fight and bicker and we'd
go hang out, you know, with our cousins in play,
and it would always end up with her and I
being on opposite side to getting into a fight, and
someone would have to you know, go call mom or whatever.
And so I think, you know, especially on my dad's side,
we have very competitive cousins.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
But I don't know.
Speaker 7 (27:39):
I think her and I were probably two of the
most competitive, especially when we got pitted against each other.
So it was fun, but it also, uh, you know,
there's always some frustration.
Speaker 5 (27:48):
There, I understand. I just have to say on my
dad's side, also very very very competitive cousins.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
Yeah, Jackson, So you know, first year with the Roadrunners obviously,
and your goaltending partner, Matthew Volalta is is quite the
character as we've we've all been accustomed to. And I
just got to ask, have you ever met another goalie
like him? And just what's it been like to have
you know him on the other end of the increase
that practice or just in that locker room as well
(28:17):
as you guys continue to push each other as the
season goes on.
Speaker 6 (28:20):
Yeah, No, I have not met another goalie like him.
Speaker 7 (28:23):
I think you even for like he's he's a very
unique person in a very good way, like super supportive teammate.
It's been great working with him and getting to know
him more and more and like you said, pushing each other.
So yeah, he's been he's been a fun guy to
be around, and you know, we always enjoy each other's
company and whatnot.
Speaker 6 (28:43):
So yeah, it's been good.
Speaker 4 (28:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
Now we have a couple of Minnesota natives or at
least one more in our on our team as well,
you and Auso mcganski.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Now Samuel Walker.
Speaker 3 (28:54):
We talked after that Friday night victory of just that
insane debut that he had, but again and just what's
it been like having him in the locker room now,
and you know, just knowing that we have that talented
forward that's gonna, you know, potentially help us push for
the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (29:09):
Yeah, like you said, I've you know, I've played against
Sammy growing up a lot with the same age, and
you know, I think you lived fifteen to twenty minutes
away from me in the neighboring town, so we saw
plenty of each other. But it's it's been really good
to have him around, and I think it kind of
brings a little bit of life into the room when
you have a new guy come in, and I think
it pushes everyone to be a little bit better too.
(29:31):
And you know, I'm sure he's been highly motivated obviously
getting traded and coming to a new team and eager
to help out and contribute and show the staff and
the team what he can do. So it's been great
having him and hopefully he can continue to be a
big part of this group and help us win some
games here down stretch.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
Yeah, and another person who's a new to the organization
this year, to our goaltending coach, Jeff Hill, who you know,
is kind of the first time in a while we've
had our goalie coach be here full time. Our last
goaltending coach, Charlie McTavish, was going back and forth. So
it's nice to have someone here, you know, just helping
our guys out and just what's it been like to
work with him with Matthew Vlalta there as well, and
(30:11):
also we've seen Dylan Wells in the mix too, but uh,
you know, just what's it like having all the him
kind of just leading the goalie group as this season
goes on.
Speaker 6 (30:20):
Yeah, it's been really good to get to know Jeff
and to work with Jeff.
Speaker 7 (30:22):
Obviously, like you said, you know, the team wasn't used
to having someone around full time, and I think it's
been great for all the goalies to have someone there
on a daily basis, someone that we can interact with,
bounce ideas off of, and kind of continue to grow
and learn and improve our games each individually. So it's
been really good working with Jeff and very helpful.
Speaker 5 (30:43):
All Right, I'm gonna get unhinged for a second, Jackson.
If you could be a dinosaur, which dinosaur would you
want to be? Got to ask this question yesterday? Oh wow, okay,
top of the huge Yeah, wait, the velociraptor. That's the
fast one, not the super undining t rex. So veloci
(31:04):
rectors the one that's like crazy fast and they like
are communicative and like diabolical. Is that it?
Speaker 6 (31:11):
I think? Yeah? I think those ones can fly to
If I'm not, maybe I'm a mistaken.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
A loss of raptor.
Speaker 5 (31:17):
Yeah, google it because that's flying is scary. And I'm
just thinking of Jurassic Park because all the new Jurassic
Park stuff is coming out, Jackson, So four nations is right,
around the corner. USA versus Finland on the thirteenth. Have
you talked to the Finns on our team about this game?
(31:38):
What's going on there?
Speaker 6 (31:39):
What is?
Speaker 1 (31:39):
What is?
Speaker 5 (31:40):
What does the talk look like.
Speaker 7 (31:42):
I have not talked to either of them about this,
but I'm sure as it gets closer we'll have some
some good banter back and forth.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
So yeah, that's exciting.
Speaker 7 (31:51):
Obviously, it's been you know, the NHL players haven't played
in the Olympics in a while, so they haven't you know,
been able to represent their country. So it'll be fun
to watch and see competitive nature and see you know,
all the best players in the world in those countries
respectively getting to go up against each other.
Speaker 6 (32:07):
So it'll be fun to watch.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
And then also USA versus Canada is actually i think
during the same time that we're going to be playing
Henderson on Saturday, okay this week, so just you have
that in your back pocket when all the Canadians start.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
The big highlight package there after that.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
Yeah, yeah, for sure, Johnny, did you google a losciraptor like.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
Oh I did.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
Yeah, it's the it's the one that it doesn't have wings,
it doesn't fly, It's the one like it's the smaller
version of a t rex where they like move in groups,
and yes, like and they're really prominent on the Jurassic
Park movies.
Speaker 5 (32:45):
Yes, the super scary ones that they have to like
keep in those special crazy cages because they're so scary.
So that's you, Jackson, that's You're the super scary one.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Well maybe not, but I was thinking of the one
that fly.
Speaker 6 (32:57):
What's that one.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
Called a terodactyl?
Speaker 1 (33:01):
Yeah, okayter actor.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
You know, you know, you know what he'd be.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
You know, he'd be disappointed Jackson that you didn't know
that Zach Stortini's son. He apparently can name Dinda stores
like off the top of his head, like, oh wow, yeah,
you know.
Speaker 6 (33:15):
I'd been a little while science class. That you will
have to forgive me.
Speaker 5 (33:23):
No, no, not for not necessary at all. I know Jackson,
that you are married. You're already married. So imagine that
you hadn't had a wedding yet, and you can hire
one performer cost doesn't matter, whether they're dead or alive,
doesn't matter, one performer to be at your wedding for
the entire thing to perform, you know, seeing your wife
down the aisle, who is it for you.
Speaker 7 (33:45):
Oh, man, that's a great question. Last year in Rockford,
I got pegged as being the swifty on the team,
so when.
Speaker 5 (33:52):
We had the that's not a bad thing they were, they.
Speaker 6 (33:55):
Were all having me.
Speaker 7 (33:56):
But I think she'd probably be a pretty good, pretty
good pick. You know, she's a good performer, good voice.
I think she can do a lot of different versatile.
She can do pop, country, all that stuff. So you know,
it'd probably go with her.
Speaker 5 (34:11):
You would definitely be the most well attended wedding I
think that anybody's ever had in their entire lives if
that was the choice. But also, yeah, is your wife
a big swifty.
Speaker 6 (34:22):
No, she's not a big swift. I think she likes
her music.
Speaker 7 (34:24):
I like some of the I like her older stuff
a little bit more. I think she likes a little
bit of her newer stuff. Actually, our goalie coach in
Rockford last year, his wife was a huge swiftie, and
so she and my wife went on the intermission and
did a little trivia questions and stuff.
Speaker 6 (34:40):
So that was pretty pretty funny as well.
Speaker 5 (34:43):
Oh, that's amazing. That's awesome. Wait and what is your
wife's name and what does she do to give us
some insight into her.
Speaker 6 (34:49):
Yeah. So her name's Annie. She's a mental health therapist.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
She worked remotely.
Speaker 7 (34:54):
Actually, my cousin has her own practice back in Minnesota,
so Annie works remotely there, which is good. Gives her
some flexibility and allows her to come to more games
and you know, create her own schedule. So yeah, it's uh,
this is her first year of doing that. Before she
was working she was actually working in Rockford and she
was hired out to an elementary school to be a
(35:16):
counselor there.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
Oh wow, So your wife Annie worked for an elementary
school last year, which is absolutely amazing. And then now
this year, this is her first year doing the remote
private practice work.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
Yep, exactly, gotcha.
Speaker 5 (35:35):
Okay, and not a huge fifty but is a fan. Yeah, okay,
all right, Johnny, how much more time do we have.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
For? Three four minutes?
Speaker 5 (35:48):
Three four minutes? Okay? I can do. I can do
so many unhinged questions in that amount of time.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
Well, I do.
Speaker 3 (35:53):
I do have to ask you, speaking of Taylor Swift,
how is the Super Bowl any stakes between the guys
for the Super Bowl with the Eagles winning.
Speaker 7 (36:02):
I don't know if there was bets between the guys,
but I'm sure they did a little bit of of uh,
you know, maybe maybe a few friendly bets. I know
Sam Lipkin was pretty excited, he's a big Eagles fan,
being from Philly.
Speaker 6 (36:19):
And then Nicky as well, she was pretty excited. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
So, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (36:25):
I don't think it got too rowdy here, anyone was
too upset, But yeah, it was. It was fun. We
all got together and watched a game yesterday here in Bakersfield.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
Wait, is Nicky from Philadelphia?
Speaker 6 (36:36):
I believe she is, or I know she went to
school there.
Speaker 5 (36:39):
Oh, I didn't know that. That's awesome. She's like to.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Have from She's I want to say, from like New
York Philly area, Like I know they're not right next
to each other, but one of those.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Yeah there, let's just say East Coast, all right.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
I have one last, un serious question for you, Jackson.
If you had a door in your house that went
to anywhere in the world, where would you want that
door to go.
Speaker 6 (37:11):
That's a good question too. Probably a beach somewhere. I'm
not sure which beach, but probably a beach, just.
Speaker 5 (37:22):
Because there's such a big difference between a beach and
bali and a beach in Mexico and a beach in Alaska.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
I mean that's true, that's true.
Speaker 7 (37:31):
Well I've never been never been to a beach in Mexico, man,
I don't know. I grew up going to the beach
a lot in California, So I'll stay there just outside
La Area.
Speaker 6 (37:42):
We'll go with that.
Speaker 5 (37:44):
That was a good answer, Okay, cool.
Speaker 4 (37:46):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Well, Jackson, thanks so much for joining us, man, I
always appreciate it. Uh, good luck here at Bakersfield and uh,
we'll catch you later.
Speaker 6 (37:55):
Yeah, sounds good. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
Just had number thirty goldtender Jackson Stabur on the show.
Always good to have someone that's never really done much
radio stuff with us, Kim, I mean when you get
an opportunity to. Because Starbur was up with Utah for
quite a while. I caught up with them on Friday
after the game just because it was like, what's up, man,
how's it going. I'n't had a chance to like talk
to you, like for radio wise, of course, seeing him
around you know, the the arena and stuff, you know,
(38:21):
with short talks here and there, but making his Happy
Hour debut his radio debut with US as well, and yeah,
a down to Earth guy.
Speaker 5 (38:29):
So much fun to talk to and I actually didn't
even get didn't even get a chance to talk to
him about his time at Providence College because he went
he went to college. But in researching him and finding
out all of the stuff that his data accomplished and
now knowing what his sisters have accomplished, absolutely fascinating. And
he's from just outside the Twin Cities in Minnesota, so yeah,
(38:54):
lots of fun to talk to him, lots of fun.
I always enjoy the Minnesota accents. They really make me laugh.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
His you can yeah, because it's like I can, Yeah,
I definitely noticed Paganski's lot, and then yeah, you can.
You can definitely notice it on stobbur and I haven't.
I haven't talked to Sammy enough Samuel Walker to notice
his yet, but I'm sure we'll start to pick up
on it eventually. Kim, you are coming on the road
with us very soon. You are coming into Henderson for
(39:23):
our two games this upcoming weekend and see Henderson Silver Knights.
You were with us, ironically enough last year in San Jose,
in which we just finished that trip. I had a
great time in San Jose, got to see old friends,
had my old San Jose Say broadcasting partner for first
intermission to Talk Hockey. He was he's a he's the
(39:43):
kind of guy who's like, let me go in there,
let me go in there, let me do color for you.
And I was like, we'll do intermission. Man, I'm not
like you take over my broadcast because he can chat
it up. He knows his hockey though. He knows his
hockey for sure, definitely more than me because he he's
a just a big hockey guy. He right for the
San Jose Sharks for the Hockey News and I correspondent
(40:04):
for NHL dot com. And yeah, so it was great
seeing him again. Great seeing my old my two old bosses.
I saw Nick Doldenberger, the San Jose Baracuda broadcast who
I interned for for two years. And then I saw
my other former boss who I broadcasted the Sanissey State
Hockey games for, for Black Dog Hockey. It's a broadcast
(40:25):
organization that covers a lot of club hockey all over America.
It was just this small little thing that he started
at Santse State because he's an alumni there too, and
now it's uh, it covers all throughout of teams in America.
So great to see him again. He was running the
TV broadcast for the Barracuda. Uh, surrounded to them and
just ran to some old friends and it was it
(40:46):
was a really fun trip. But unfortunately now I'm sick.
So I got sick from it, and uh, we're we're
we're battling out here. We're gonna we're gonna get through
these next couple of games and hopefully feel better by Vegas.
Speaker 5 (40:57):
Yeah, fingers crossed for you, because I definitely don't want
what gunk you have. Go ahead and just get rid
of it right right now. Baker's Field, Yes, that's just like, yeah,
very Bakersfield. Yeah, but yeah, I'm excited to go to Henderson.
I've actually never been to what is it called Lee's
Lee's Face.
Speaker 3 (41:16):
These Family Forum now, yeah, it used to be oh,
I think it used to be called Citizens Bank Arena,
and then they changed the name.
Speaker 4 (41:26):
Is it was it that? It was?
Speaker 1 (41:28):
No?
Speaker 4 (41:29):
Sorry, no, no, that was sorry. That was Ontario's former name,
Dollar Loan Center used.
Speaker 5 (41:33):
Yeah, that's it, Dollar Loan Center.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
This Bank Arena was the Ontario Rains former name. Now
they're the Toyota Center or Toyota Arena and the Dollar
Loan Center becoming now Lee's Family Forum.
Speaker 6 (41:44):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
Yeah, it's beautiful arena, Kim.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
I can't wait to see the broadcast angle that you're
gonna see that we have.
Speaker 4 (41:50):
Okay, but we have our own room, which is nice.
Speaker 3 (41:52):
But we are way up high and we literally looked
directly down at the at the rink with a lot
of like you don't even you and see our bench.
Came and see our bench, So it's uh, it's quite
the spot. Henderson's a nice city, but we stay in
uh and you're staying in the same hotel we are,
and we stay on the strips, So it's a it's
(42:12):
gonna be a fun few days.
Speaker 5 (42:14):
I am. I am as sad at the physical response
I had to you describing where you sit you saw me.
I am not a I don't have a fear of heights,
but that sounds very scary.
Speaker 3 (42:27):
Yeah, it's it's definitely like, oh man, if I like
where to fall over this, I i'd because.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
It's also tough, which I hope they add it.
Speaker 3 (42:36):
And I've I've seen people fans complain about it and
what end their rightfully, so is their their ice mic,
their crowd mic that you know you hear during the
games of the of the ice, the noises of hockey.
You know, theirs hasn't worked like ever, and I sometimes
have to grab my own microphone and like try to
stick it out there, but since we're so high, there's
(42:57):
no place to put it. And I've heard some broadcasters
they will tape it and like lure it down.
Speaker 4 (43:03):
It's just hanging there above the fans.
Speaker 3 (43:05):
But I'm scared to do that because I don't want
it to fall off and hurt someone.
Speaker 5 (43:09):
So you can just give me a cord list and
I'll take it out into the stands because now she's
scared to sit up top.
Speaker 4 (43:17):
Yeah, and it's gonna be a whole trip.
Speaker 3 (43:19):
Kim, you and me, uh, your daughter Megan's coming, Chase,
you know, you all know Chase, my PR coordinator and
PR media coordinator Bennett Silvaan, our social media manager, and
also Elliana Dieberts are intered will be there too, and
I already told her this too. She's gonna be doing
(43:40):
color for our games versus the Henderson Silver Nights, So yeah,
lots of excitement for those two games. It's gonna be great.
But we have two big games first, with one coming
up against the Bakersfield Condors and the Ontario Rains. So
the fun of Vegas is coming, but we got to
it gets we had some work to do here for
(44:01):
the next two games.
Speaker 5 (44:02):
Yeah, work work is going to be happening from here
on out here to April May, as far as it
can possibly go. Work work work, said Rihanna has it.
That's that's our new song.
Speaker 4 (44:18):
What you uh other't note? What you think of the
halftime show?
Speaker 5 (44:22):
Oh, big fan, big fan? It wasn't for everybody, perfect perfect,
Oh my god. There wasn't a single, no notes, no notes,
front to back. It was one of the most amazing
halftime shows ever.
Speaker 4 (44:36):
I like it. I like it. Yeah, it was. It
was good.
Speaker 3 (44:38):
I love that. I love that he played the song.
I'm not gonna say it on air because I don't
want to get in trouble either. I'm not gonna even
explain what happened.
Speaker 5 (44:46):
Well and Neer the teaser for yes and then actually played.
Speaker 4 (44:51):
And they actually did it. That's what That's why I
like about some Super Bowl halftime shows.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
They kind of just like they know that everyone's talking
about it, and then they sometimes do it, and they
sometimes don't. I about Sissy too, sizza looks great. Yes, yes,
oh yeah. I was wondering, I'm like, God, is that
I'm like that was someone? That was someone? And then
later I found out, like on social media it was
Serena Williams, and I'm like, that's crazy.
Speaker 5 (45:16):
I had to tell you the funniest story because I'm
not a huge NFL fan. I like football, but I'm
not a big NFL fan. So this is my master
genius plan was I went over to my brother's house.
He had a Super Bowl party pregame, spent a little
bit of time with the family. They made some amazing food,
and then when the game started, I went to Costco
and they spent the first game at Coco because nobody
(45:39):
was there. It was so great.
Speaker 4 (45:42):
It was a fan, I guess.
Speaker 3 (45:44):
And if you're not a big football fan, it's so
opportunity for you to get some shopping done.
Speaker 5 (45:47):
Yes, And then I came home literally with one minute
and thirty four seconds left on the clock for the
for the half, got the halftime show, was able to
like rock out and really appreciate I really liked Kendrick
Lamars jeans, which it was like the least relevant thing
that happened last night. But it was just so so entertaining.
I just, oh my god, I had my TV cranked
(46:09):
up so high. It was so entertaining.
Speaker 4 (46:11):
Yeah, it was quite the show.
