Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello everybody. This is Sea Bass here with another new
episode of Rocking with Sea Bass, and today I'm going
to talk about a female artist named Lee Aaron. But
before I do that, I just wanted to thank Jeff
Stevens from the iHeartRadio station Mixed one oh seven seven,
who also has a podcast called The eighty Show. It's
a great show. Definitely invite you to check it out
(00:21):
on the iHeartMedia app. He talks everything eighties, obviously does
a few interviews here and there. He actually had one
interview that I listened to. He interviewed Brad Gillis, one
of my favorite guitar players, so I thought that was
really cool. He's also interviewed Stephen Pearcy from RATT and
a few others that I can't really name at the
(00:42):
top of my head, but yeah, he's he's not at all.
So anyway, I just wanted to thank him for everything
he's helped me put this together. If it wasn't for him,
I probably wouldn't be doing this. So thank you Jeff
for helping me out. Also, on April fourth, I will
be heading up to Columbus to see Michael Monroe at
the King of Clubs. If you don't know who Michael
(01:03):
Monroe is. He is the lead singer of Hanoi Rocks.
Great band. They were one of the first glam bands
of the eighties, like the first ones to like really,
you know, bring it to life kind of mixing you know,
the New York Dolls and metal and mash it together.
They're very more punkish than anything, but great group, a
(01:24):
very underrated group. Definitely check them out if you've never
heard of them. And also August twenty eighth, I will
be going to go see Tom Keefer of Cinderella. I
know I talk about Cinerea a lot on this show.
They're probably one of my favorite bands at that time,
so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing him. I have
never seen Tom Keefer at all. And La Guns is
(01:46):
opening for them. I've seen them. They're great. Phil Lewis
sounds just as he did back then. I mean, his
voice has never changed. I don't know how that guy
does it. And of course, the Dane Dragons are coming
back for another exciting season of Dayton Dragons baseball. I
will be behind the board running the games, some of
(02:07):
them anyway, There's a few other people that run the
games too, but I'm one of them, so I do
definitely look forward to that. If you are a huge
baseball fan and you want to listen, go on the
IRN app and look up Fox Sports nine eighty WNE
and you will hear the Dayton Dragons baseball Tuesday through Sunday.
(02:29):
Mostly most of the games are in the evenings, but yeah, yeah,
it's gonna be a great time. I definitely look forward
to that. Anyway. I wanted to talk about this artist
Lee Aaron because I don't think she gets enough credit
on how good she really is. I mean, she's been
around in the eighties and is still going strong. Like
(02:52):
I listened to her like a few years back. I
heard the song Metal Queen, and you know a few
other her songs like what You're Gonna Do with My Body?
And I like the songs. I enjoyed them. But then
after that I kind of stopped listening for a little
bit until like now, I decided, okay, you know what,
I got to listen to more of her stuff. I
listened to three of her albums, Metal Queens, named the
(03:17):
album called the Wild, which is my favorite album by
her so far, and Body Rocking Holy Cow. This lady
has pipes, and she still has pipes. I've listened to
one of her recent videos, you know, one of her
live concerts she does, and she still sounds just as
good as she did back then. I mean, wow, this
(03:38):
this woman is great and very underrated. So I just
wanted to come on here and talk a little bit
about our history and some of my favorite moments that
I've seen so far, and what I think about the
albums in general. So the first album I'm gonna talk
about is Metal Queen. Obviously, that was the first song
(04:00):
I heard, the first music video I've heard by her.
If you have not seen the music video, you gotta
watch this. This is like the female version of Ronnie
Jays Deo. I don't know if she gets that a lot,
but that's literally what it reminded me of. She was
like dressed up in this like a barbarian type costume.
Can't really explain it, and you have to look at
(04:21):
the album cover to kind of like really get what
I'm talking about, and she had a sword and everything.
It was really cool. The music video is really good,
but some of her songs on this album is really
good too. Well, actually all of her songs are, but
the ones that stand up the most to me is
probably we will Be Rocking. We will Be Rocking, And
(04:46):
I just totally butchered that a great song. Love the
guitar on this The guitar on this album is just fantastic.
The other one is probably Head Above Water. That's a
good one. I also like A Lady of the Darkest
Night's kind of a slow song when it starts, but
then it kind of picks up and it just takes
(05:09):
off and you're hooked instantly. It's a great album. It
was recorded in nineteen eighty four, and during that guitarist
John Olbany joined the band and he and Aaron formed
like a solid songwriting partnership, and I think I think
that's really what helped this album take off, was when
he got together with her. It helped her tremendously and
(05:35):
they continued on making like a lot of great music.
And it apparently they've been together for like eleven years,
so wow, that's pretty impressive. Now. Her next album her
nineteen eighty five album Call of the Wild, which is
my favorite album by far. I mentioned that before, but
I cannot stress enough this is probably the best album
(05:56):
I've heard by far. Like I love all the songs
that I heard. All of them really stuck out, and
I just loved it. This actually has one of her
most well known songs. It's a rock ballad called Barely
Holding On, a really good song. The piano, the way
(06:18):
it starts and then the guitar you know, comes in,
all heavy and stuff, but it's still a very slow
pacing song, but very well put together. Like it, I
don't know how to really describe it. I think the
best way I can really describe it is it feels
like I'm walking, you know, out in the night of
the streets in a music video. Picture me in a
(06:39):
music video, and it's at night and I'm walking trying
to find my way, and that that's what it feels like.
It's a really good, feel good song. I love that
song very much. Well. Like I said, I like all
the songs on this album, but I can only mention
a few of the songs because due to time and timing.
Of course, another good song on this is Champion You
(07:04):
have the Jamiyond, another good song to really listen to.
The last song on the album, Hot to Be Rocked.
We Are Hot to Be Rocked, another good song that's
probably my most favorite song off the album. I listened
to that probably the most. I'm listening to it this morning.
(07:27):
I also like Danger Zone and Evil Game, of course,
but this album's truly like one of my favorite albums.
I think she really nailed it on this one. Now.
What's interesting about this album is it reached number eighty
six on the Canadian album charts. It remained there for
like twelve weeks. In the title track it was included
(07:50):
on the nineteen eighty eight reissued version, but not on
the original release. The version I listened to did not
have called the Wild on it, so huh, I'm gonna
have to go back and find that song because I
didn't realize that. I didn't even pick up on it.
So that's more digging for me. But again, great album,
(08:14):
one of her best. So her next album that I
was listening to, it's called Body Rock. This was her
fifth album and it was released on September thirteenth and
nineteen eighty nine, and this album is considerably her most
successful and highest charting album to date, reaching in number
(08:36):
twenty four on the Canadian album charts and number thirty
six on the German album charts. Both of its singles
charted What She Gonna Do to My Body and reached
number twenty five, and hands On also reach on number
thirty eight. So yeah, I guess that really is one
of her most successful albums, A great, great album. I
(08:57):
love the song What She Gonna Do to My Body.
The music was hilarious, by the way, it's very very eighties,
like she's you know, dressed up, she looks very hot
and everything. Her band's you know, getting into it. But
the song itself is very catchy and it's a very
good pick, pick me up song. It's a song you
(09:19):
kind of want to like work out too. Hands On
is also another good song. I love the music video
on that one as well. It's somewhat the same as
What You're Gonna Do to My Body. But a lot
of a lot of good songs on this one, but
I think those two songs are the two songs that
really stick out. I also like Nasty Boys and Got
a Thing for You. She also did a Mantros cover
(09:41):
song on this album, rock Candy. When I first listened
to it, I didn't really think much of it, and
then right at the end of the song it hit
me and I realized, like, wait, that was a Mantros cover.
Holy Cow. I'm not a guy that usually compares, you know,
originals to covers and which it's better, but it's up there.
It was just as good as the original, so I'll
(10:03):
give that to her. This is really when she picked
up a lot of success on her song what You're
Gonna Do to My Body was nominated for a Video
of the Year in nineteen ninety at the Juno Awards.
The album also got nominated for Album of the Year.
So that's pretty impressive when a music video becomes the
(10:25):
what's nominated for Music Video of the Year, and then
the album itself the Album of the year. That I
love I love that. That That is cool. I think
she is an amazing singer. She's considered one of the
best Canadian rock singers of that era, in fact, of
(10:45):
all time in my humble opinion, She's done a lot
of great things for the other artists. In fact, her
first album, which I do want to listen to, I
haven't listened to it yet, it's called The Lee Aaron Project.
It was released in nineteen eighty two. The album featured
a lot of musicians of the Toronto music scene. Members
(11:06):
of Moxie also Rick Emmett from Triumph. I thought that
was cool, and I love Rick Emmick and I love
Triumph's like a great another great band. They're from Canada,
so that makes sense. But yeah, I definitely want to
listen to more of her stuff, and I love to
see her live. I know she doesn't really tour here
much in America. She mostly tours in Germany and you know,
(11:29):
across the Europe area, so maybe I won't have a
chance to see her, but if she ever does come
down near the States, I will definitely go down to
see her, and I think you guys should definitely check
her out too. Anyway, that's all the time I have
for you today. Thank you for listening, and tune in
for another exciting episode on Rocking with Sea Bass next week.
(11:52):
Thank you, take care, and keep on rocking.
