Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Hayi's out of control. Where's your phone, sir,
get your phone?

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Here's your phone?

Speaker 3 (00:07):
Your phone?

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You couldn't use your phone? Oh you got anything? You've
done that here? Hand it up, you.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Hell it up, and I want you to send us
out three two one.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
I just air dropped it. Oh wait, it says file
too large and said.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
He is Craig Robinson and he is at Comedy Work
South tonight right here in Greenwood Village. I'll be going
there and he joins us now on Ryan Schuling Live. Craig,
thank you so much for your time and thanks for
joining me. This just so happens to be my fifty
first birthday.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Thank you, Craig.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Appreciate that and appreciate you coming back to Comedy Works.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
I know a lot of comedians and enjoy that venue.
Is there something specific about it that stands out to you.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Well, let's start with the way we're treated. It's impeccable.
They Wendy takes care of us. She's a special story
because she started out working comedy works and she would
go and like take care of the condo, you know,
clean up the condo and something she was noticing little

(01:26):
stuff that the comedians didn't have, and she would, you know,
add to it. Now she's an owner and she makes
sure we have everything we need, so you know you're
gonna get treated well. The way it's set up. The
acoustics are wonderful, the club is beautiful, and then the
crowds are so much fun and smart crowds. It's great
all around. It's one of the top top clubs in

(01:47):
the country.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Now.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
One of the things that we got a sneak preview
about you with Craig was during your tenure on the Office,
and a lot of people in our audience will remember
you as Daryl from that program. You would occasionally get
on the keyboard and come up with some songs, and
that makes up a large portion of your act, at
least as I saw it a year ago. With your
band The Nasty Delicious also in the background. I got

(02:09):
to ask you the Nasty Delicious versus Randy Jackson in
Sexual Chocolate.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Who wins Randy Jackson all day? The kidding come home?

Speaker 1 (02:24):
He's real good? Yeah, good and terrible.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
But indeed, what the inspiration was for you, Craig, to
go on the road, to go on tour to make
it largely musical and bring all of that to your
the element of your act.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
And it started when I first started. I was I
did probably three open mics where I just did straight
stand up and then uh, and then one day I
just had the inkling and bring the keyboard and it
was so natural. And he knows not playing church and
at school and everything, so I was always clowning around
on a keyboard. So I just brought that and it

(03:08):
just clicked for me, and it was like, let's go.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Craig Robinson our guest. He's at Comedy Works South tonight
and tomorrow night. The early shows those are sold out,
so people have responded to Craig's presence here in Denver.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
But the late shows you can still get tickets. That's right,
nine tonight, nine pm tomorrow night.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
So, Craig, a person coming out to see you for
the first time, what can they expect?

Speaker 2 (03:32):
They can expect me to sing happy birthday to somebody.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
That would be an honor that I would cherish forever.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Craig, you know that, right, put the light on him
and let's go.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Looking back in time.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Craig, it was kind of a long and winding road
for you to get to this point, just reading in
your bio here about being in the Chicago public schools
is a K through eight teacher getting your undergraduate degree
from Illinois State University. And I've been there many times
to Bloomington Normal myself as a Central Michigan grad. We
play against you guys in basketball a lot. But your road, yeah, yeah,

(04:11):
your road through education to comedy.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Can you kind of take us on that road and
how you got there?

Speaker 2 (04:18):
I was in college where that's when I realized that
this is what I wanted. That's what comedy chose me.

Speaker 5 (04:25):
What does that mean, Craig?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
What it means? I was so silly and people would
be repeating stuff that I said, and you know, and
and and looking back, I was doing bits but I
didn't know I was doing. But I was just being stupid,
you know. And uh, and then I saw a buddy
of mine he did stand up. Now, up to the point,
stand up comedians were like superheroes, are like mystical figures

(04:47):
or something like you see him, but they weren't real people.
They had this power, this hypnotic power over the audience
and what have you. So I did never thought about
me being a comedian. And then a buddy of mine
went up and did at comedy and it changed everything.
He did it add like a homecoming show, and it
just was like, wait, real people do it. It was

(05:08):
I know it's stupid sounding, but I don't know what
it was, but it just now and then I was
full speed ahead. I started learning about comedy, going to
open mics and figuring it out, and then you know,
one thing led to another. I would get a U.
I remember letting somebody hear my tapes in the men's
bathroom at this Millioneers. It was a shaft spot. And

(05:32):
then with Bernie Maverick do a show and the guy
heard the book the show, I let him hear it,
and then he was like, you coming next week, you
know so and then stuff like that, We're going, and
you know, people have looked out and I got on
shows and and just kind of found my way.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Greg Robinson our guests, he's that comedy works South Tonight.
I'm excited. I'm going to see him at the Landmark
there in Greenwood Village. Early shows are sold out, but
tonight you can see him at nine pint thirty for
the late show.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
And on Saturday at nine pm.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Now, I was at the late show a year ago, Craig,
and you know, people a little bit more well lubricated
with the alcohol, so to speak, and you might be
tempted to go a little bit longer. Is the late
show maybe a little bit more rowdy than the early
show for you?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
It all depends, It all depends. That definitely plays a
factor with the being later and people you know, got
their drinks in them. But you know, you can have
a round of crowd at any time.

Speaker 5 (06:24):
But yeah, yeah, the.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Late shows, especially late Saturday night, that tends to be
the one that you know, they get crazy.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
And he will be there both tonight and tomorrow night,
as I stayed. You can find out more online at
comedyworks dot com. Craig Robinson our guest. One question I
did have for you, Craig, you mentioned about getting your
start and you major mark on the comedy circuit just
for last Festival ninety eight in Montreal, and in the
in between time you found your way to Second City
and in Chicago. I mean, this is legendary. You got

(06:54):
a John Belushi, you have Bill Murray, all these up
and comers that eventually went on to Saturday Night Live,
and we're a part of troop comedy and kind of
sketch comedy. What did you learn from your time at
Second City and how was that different from what you
were cultivating as a stand up comedian.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Actually, I did the training center and what that taught
me and I did that for two years, so that
taught me to like they were, you know, they were
doing improv and kind of sketch stuff. And when I went,
I was thinking I was gonna learn to do stand
up there. But thank god I went because I got to,
you know, learn how to improvise and really just go

(07:33):
out and make your mistakes and make them big because
you know, a lot of a lot of those classes
they're like, hey, we need to volunteers, and I will always.

Speaker 5 (07:43):
Jump up first.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
You don't know what they're gonna say, what the cul
the scene is about, anything, but I would just go up.
And it gave me that, like, just go attack.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Stay tuned for your chance to wear a parent win
a pair of passes for the Late Show either tonight
or tomorrow night. We'll give you details on that in
just a moment. You can text in for your chance
to win at five seven seven three nine. Craig Robinson,
our guest Comedy Works South the venue that's tonight and
tomorrow night at the Landmark in Greenwood Village. A couple
more questions for you, Craig, and you might get this
one a lot, but it might be two different answers.

(08:13):
And that would be who your favorite all time stand
up comedian is and who your biggest influence was in
terms of how you do your.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Act Richard Pryor favorite, and then the biggest influence of
how I do mind. Now that's gonna be a multi
layered answer because there's so many. But you know, Paul Mooney, okay,
like you know, gave me this like like the stand

(08:42):
up and have no fear, just go and and then
even right, which is one liners, you know, and Steve
Martin with the music, and uh, let me see Eddie
Murphy obviously is a huge, huge impact. The Richard Pryor

(09:02):
to me is the greatest. And Bill Cosey's in there too.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
You know.

Speaker 6 (09:06):
It was.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Lots of lots of people with the way I do
my I don't know that I saw anybody doing it quite.

Speaker 5 (09:14):
Like I do it.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
I don't mean not to sound kind of way, but
it is what it is.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Oh, he's his own guy Craig Robinson joining us here
at Comedy Work South tonight. Now, a lot of people
are going to remember you as Darryl Philbin from the
office and shipping and receiving and those classic interactions that
you had this dead pan look on your face as
Michael Scott. Steve Carell was just getting wacky in all
sorts of ways in front of you. Did that require

(09:41):
a lot of takes for you a lot of times
because this is a hilarious individual that you're interacting with.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
But you did such a good job.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Of kind of reverse mirroring his energy and being that
kind of stone cold sober presence on the show. You're
one of my favorite characters from that show. But take
us through that process, and it was that difficult for you.
It wasn't easy for you to stay a stone cold
sober on the set.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
He definitely lost it a bunch of times. But you
also at work and it costs money when you go
too long, so you got to keep all that in mind.
But that definitely takes where you kind of you know,
you got takes for you myself.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
He got takes where you're.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Cracking up, and you know, somebody Steve Carell is trying
to like destroy you. So yeah, it took a lot
of willpower and all this whatever you need. That was
one of my bigger things was like when I work
with Eddie Murphy on Dolomite is my Name?

Speaker 7 (10:33):
Yeah, just the thing like him being.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Such a hero in my mind and I know all
his stuff, right, So I'm sitting there, He's doing his
dialogue and all I can think is, you know, ice
cream and all his you know, kill my Landlord, all
this stuff, and he's trying to remember my lines. Stuff
like that helps help help me become better at my craft.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
Finally, Craig Robinson, always thankful for your time, and you
got some big shows tonight. You got to get prepared,
you got to get lined up, and I'll be seeing
you at the early one myself. But on that show,
you did it for so many years. You were such
a big part of that cast, the central part of
that cast. Were there one or two other cast members
that you were particularly close with and maybe friends with
off the set that you just kind of hit it

(11:18):
off with.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
Yes, a few of them, mainly probably my best friend
from there will be Margaret.

Speaker 5 (11:25):
Wasn't it named Kate?

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Yeah? Yeah, yeah, So we're pretty cool. And you know,
I'm cool with everybody, but me and Kate were like,
you know, we were cool. We would hang out stuff.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Craig Robinson, he's there tonight, Comedy Works south Landmark at
Greenwood Village, the late shows. Still you can get your
tickets nine thirty pm tonight, nine pm tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
We'll have your chance to win a pair of passes.

Speaker 3 (11:49):
As well in just a few minutes when you can
text five seven seven three nine. The great Craig Robinson,
great musical comedy act coming to Denver tonight and.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
I'll be there, Craig, thank you so much for your time.
I'm ready.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Why I'm ready, Craig, you're the best man. All right,
all right, Craig Robinson right there. What a pleasant surprise.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Oh my god, sweet of him.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
On my birthday, he said, put the spotlight on me
tonight and they're going to sing it to me.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
You know, I don't know. I'm not going to ask
for that, but that would be wow, that would be
quite quite a scene.

Speaker 8 (12:25):
Well, I would sing it to you, but I already
sang to Michael Brown and it kind of sounded like
Marilyn Monroe was kind.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Of creepy for me Brown.

Speaker 8 (12:34):
I'm saying it to Brown, and both Dragon and him
were like, that's really good, but you kind of sounded
like Marilyn Monroe, like a little creepy.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
I don't creepy.

Speaker 8 (12:45):
Happy Bursday to you.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Yeah, fair enough, now going there again. I hope you
enjoyed your gifts.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
From Everything's great, Dano looking forward to Maggiano's got some
model IPA, got some Craig Robinson. Just talking to him,
and your chance to win in just a few minutes.
I'll tell you exactly what you need to do. It'll
be a pair of passes for either late show. You'll
need to specify Witch Show Friday night or Saturday Night. Now,
Friday Night, that's tonight nine thirty Saturday nine pm. So

(13:18):
specify Witch Show, need a phone number for you to
put on a list, and you'll get two passes to
see Craig Robinson in either late show. Now, I got
to issue a slight clarification on the story we were
talking about yesterday. I got a call from Representative ty Winter,
the assistant minority leader in the Colorado House, this morning,
and he wanted me to make sure to clarify to
all of you that the votes in sequential order that

(13:42):
he participated in changed with regard to the competency bill
that became law and has become the point of much
consternation for many of us, not only on the right
side of the aisle, but just people with common sense
in general about I.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
I'm crazy.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Can't charge me, Oh, he's incompetent to sand trial. The
shrink shopping worked. You get out of jail free card.
Go ahead, We're not going to charge you.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
Go back into the community.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
Salad and Gallaghan, feel free to kidnap another fifth grader
from an elementary school recess and playground during the broad
daylight hours in Aurora.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Go ahead.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
There were too many Republicans on this, but I wanted
to clarify that in the final vote, Ty Winter was
not one of them. He voted procedurally to advance the
bill with the Senate amendments that were added to it.
I might add, every single Republican Senator voted for it,
except one that was had an excused absence or whatever.
From the vote in the House, twelve GOP members voted

(14:42):
no ultimately, and finally six GOP members voted yes and
one again was absent and did not vote, but the
following changed their vote. So the names that I mentioned
yesterday that were originally yes to advance with the amendments
from the Senate, Richard Holdtorft changed to a no.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
That needs to be mentioned.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
Mike Lynch, the former minority leader, he changed to a no,
and Ty Winter same thing changed to a no. Ron
Weinberg was a know all the way through, so was
Don Wilson. Also going through on that list, Stephanie Luck
she was no across the board. Anthony Hartsook was a no.
Gab Evans, now a Congressman, a no all the way through.

(15:24):
Lisa Frizelle as well, and two of the members of
the House that we spoke with yesterday, Scott Bottom's Brandy
Bradley both knows, however, way too many yeses, including the
outgoing Ryan Armagust Mary Bradfield. Yeah, we're calling out names here,
That's what we do on this show. Sorry, not sorry,

(15:45):
And then following through Senior Rose Piglasi.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
This one baffles me.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
The now outgoing Minority leader voted yes both on the
amendments and on the bill itself.

Speaker 1 (15:56):
So did Matt Soper, so did Rick Taggart. To me,
this is just unacceptable. This bill was a poison pill
from the very beginning. Amendments are no.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
And I have a real hard time that Senator Barb
Kirkmeyer and all the Republican centers voted for it, because
if you are not in that General Assembly as shorthanded
as we already are, and you're not willing to stand
on principle the way that Brandy Bradley and Scott Bodhamston said,
Hell no, our constituents that will not stand for this.
We see around the corners. There are bad things coming.
We can anticipate it because we read the bill. I

(16:27):
don't care what kind of compromise you made. You don't
make this compromise. Ultimately, you don't do it, and they did.
And if they're going to do that, what good are they?
What good are they if we don't have Republicans in
the minority standing in the breach, being a voice for
all of us and standing firm no on a bill
like this. Now I've got all kinds of gobbledygook about well.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
We're going to go through the process of the amendments.
It was unconstitutional. Can't hold them without cause. They have rights,
they have rights to do process.

Speaker 3 (16:56):
The fact that this is a national story somebody like
Solomon Gallaghan is freed to the Colorado public is not acceptable.
And they've got to get this thing back on the
tracks and back in order.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Craig Robinson mentioned his all time favorite comedian who was that?
Send that answer along five seven, seven, three nine and
you'll be registered to win a free pair of passes.
See Craig Robinson to Night and Comedy Works South, Stay tuned,
Gordon Shang Next.

Speaker 6 (17:33):
Three thirty, Pat Sirtain, Pat, you're on with Dave Logan.
Ryan's a bitch of an all Bright.

Speaker 1 (17:37):
How are you, sir?

Speaker 7 (17:39):
I'm good doing We're doing good.

Speaker 9 (17:41):
Pat, appreciate the time. We're just talking about the and
I know you guys have talked about it as well,
Game by game, the three game stretch. You're one and two?
Uh now is a veteran leader a voice in that
in that locker room?

Speaker 1 (17:56):
What?

Speaker 9 (17:56):
What are what are the challenges of any in terms
of just kind of staying focused on what's ahead the
Monday night game with the Bengals, and and how do
you deal with sort of some of the disappointment the
last play of the game, disappointment, the last couple of weeks.

Speaker 10 (18:14):
Yeah, I think first thing first is instill in confidence
in the guys around me and making sure you know.

Speaker 5 (18:23):
We don't schedule with that, but it's just a we
know it's a day to.

Speaker 10 (18:26):
Day process, a day to day schedule.

Speaker 5 (18:29):
In this league. You know it's not going to be easy,
but you know, we got to put out best foot
forward each and every week and look on to the
next you know what I mean.

Speaker 10 (18:37):
I think we've got a great opportunity this week Monday
Night football against the Bengals to get on the win column.
And I think that's what's important now, just focusing on
the next step ahead.

Speaker 11 (18:49):
You gave an interview a couple of weeks ago where
you were talking about sometimes the defense sivers from from
lapses and you need guys to try to be superheroes
and seek big plays to change the game.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
What did you What did you mean by that?

Speaker 10 (19:02):
Just like, you know, not trying to do something as
out of your role, you know what I mean, Just
be in your role, understanding the defense.

Speaker 5 (19:11):
Uh, you know you're gonna.

Speaker 10 (19:13):
Make your plays when it comes about to Like, just
from that standpoint, as you say, boy doing their job
collectively as a unit, and being assigned and being focused
on their.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
Job, the individual job, and because you know there's great.

Speaker 10 (19:28):
Players everywhere and you know the plays gonna come to
you as long as you focus and hone in on
what you do in your role.

Speaker 6 (19:35):
So, hey, patam really enjoying the new podcast with you
and Terry and Arnold.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
It's really good stuff. Man, you'd have fun doing that.

Speaker 10 (19:42):
Yeah, I'm having I'm having a great time doing it.

Speaker 5 (19:44):
Man.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
It's a different.

Speaker 10 (19:45):
Avenue to tap into. Obviously, tell you he's quite the character,
but it's pretty cool to really like sit down and engage.

Speaker 7 (19:54):
With the fans, but also, you know, talk.

Speaker 5 (19:56):
Game and have some fun doing it as well too.
So you So, I'm enjoying it a little bit.

Speaker 10 (20:01):
At first I was opposed to it, but now I'm
having some fun with it, so it's pretty cool.

Speaker 6 (20:07):
One of the things that you talked about, I think
it was either yesterday or recently, is about this Bengals
matchup and watching the Vikings and how they played against
Browning and that that Bengals offense.

Speaker 1 (20:20):
What can you take away?

Speaker 6 (20:21):
I mean, you guys run a different kind of defense
than what they're doing with Brian Flores and the Vikings defense.
But what are some of the takeaways that you had
watching that in the way that you guys can maybe
utilize some of the effectiveness that the Vikings had.

Speaker 5 (20:34):
Yeah, I think they was. They was flying around, I
had to ball. There's making a lot of turnovers. I
think that's what's key in the NFL. We generate a
lot of turnovers and increase your chances of winning.

Speaker 7 (20:49):
And I think that propelled.

Speaker 5 (20:51):
Them towards victory.

Speaker 10 (20:52):
And you know, they played great sound defense. You know
they had a great scheme going on to a game.
Looking at the film to see like everybody was flying
around to the ball and making plays, and you know
that's that's pretty much in terms of a good sign

(21:13):
when you see all those turnots being wrapped up on
the defensive side of the ball. So they was playing
around for sure.

Speaker 9 (21:20):
Pat You've got an offense that you're familiar with coming
to town on Monday night. Different different quarterback obviously in
Jake Browning, but still the cast of characters is the same.
And I want to ask you, because you were matched
up last year in Cincinnati some maybe even a lot
on Jamar Chase. There are great receivers in this league.

(21:42):
Almost every single week, and then there are some guys
that are, you know, a step or two above that
in terms of being elite guys. When when you look
at Chase and his game, what two or three things
strike you about being most difficult for defensive backs to
kind of deal with.

Speaker 10 (22:03):
I think, uh, one of the underrated parts about his
game and his people don't realize how strong he is.
His ability to really like utilize and get off of press,
and you know, his explosiveness, and I think his yards.

Speaker 5 (22:18):
After the catch. I think when he gets the bar
in his hands, he's.

Speaker 7 (22:21):
He's uh then there guaranteed to take.

Speaker 10 (22:23):
It to the house someplay, So he's a he's a
big play threat uh waiting to happen. And I think
that's what separates him from you know, other receivers in
the league. So you know, we gotta eliminate that, and
hone in on stopping that for sure.

Speaker 1 (22:40):
Yeah, Dove tailing off Ded.

Speaker 11 (22:41):
I think if memory serves correct, last year, you got
the force fumble on t Higgins, You're gonna you can
get the force fumble on Jamar this so we can
put the skins up on the wall for both receivers.

Speaker 7 (22:51):
Yeah, yeah, you gotta make that happen.

Speaker 10 (22:54):
You gotta have a two for two there.

Speaker 6 (22:55):
You gonna decide to put it up on the wall.
Love it, absolutely, love it all. Right now it's time
for the Children's hospital. Call her a kid Caster and
it's presented by your corrade of you at GMC Dealers.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
This week's question is from Malachi. It's me Malchai.

Speaker 8 (23:13):
I want to know what is your weirdest and funniest
food you have in your house?

Speaker 7 (23:23):
Okay, where is where this food in the house? Yeah,
that's a good question.

Speaker 5 (23:30):
What do I have right now? Uh?

Speaker 11 (23:36):
Hopefully none of these pumpkin spice salmon filets like Ryan
Edwards over here.

Speaker 7 (23:40):
Yeah, yeah, I ain't got none.

Speaker 5 (23:44):
I got none, so crazy?

Speaker 1 (23:47):
Yeah, because what's weird do you like?

Speaker 5 (23:50):
I got it?

Speaker 10 (23:51):
I got some like hot somalis in the cabinet. I
don't know why I'm not. I'm not a big fan
of those. That's probably a weird food I have in
the in the cabinet.

Speaker 5 (24:02):
And favorite food? Uh? What was my favorite? I don't know.

Speaker 10 (24:11):
I got I got a whole bunch of chips lined
up I'll be snacking on the chipsos and stuff, so
i'd probably say that.

Speaker 6 (24:18):
So with the hot tamalies, is it just a spice,
like the cinnamon spice of it?

Speaker 1 (24:22):
Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
I don't like that. I don't know what it is.

Speaker 10 (24:25):
Some people some people like them, but you know, it's
just sitting in the cabinets for no reason, taking up space.

Speaker 6 (24:32):
In case the friend comes over and it's like, oh,
I love lots of there, they're yours.

Speaker 7 (24:36):
Take them them, you take them, take them please.

Speaker 1 (24:39):
That's right, I see them.

Speaker 6 (24:41):
Hey, Pat, appreciate it, man, best of like on Monday night.

Speaker 1 (24:44):
Thank you.

Speaker 7 (24:45):

Speaker 1 (24:48):
