Speaker 1 (00:00):
Friday, which means we are on the right side of

(00:03):
Hollywood and the two most foremost authorities on the subject
join us, one by phone and one in studio. Christin
total you can find him online at Hollywoodintoto dot com
and joining us by phone. The great Deborah Flora. You
just heard here filling in for Dan Kaplis on Tuesday

(00:24):
and Thursday, and she joined us once again by phone
here on this Friday. Deborah, where do you find you
today and why you couldn't join us in the studio.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Well, i am actually I'm an advisory council member for
leadership program at the Rockies, so we are having an
event today, but I'm not too far by. But really
great to be in the studio this past week and
so happy to be joining you every Friday. Here ran
looking forward to it and you.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Can follow her on x at her handle at Deborah
Flora and joining us as I mentioned Hollywood and Toto
on on the socials. He's got a very consistent brand
presence online to Toto and studio with me. Christian, welcome
to it.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Good to be here. I'm looking forward to this, looking.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Forward to it as well, and I want to start
and I'll start with Deborah on the commentary here where
our society has gone and this isn't just entertainment, but
it isn't our news media as well, that we're so
lase a fair when it comes to the assassination of
a United Healthcare CEO. It started off and I'm going
to jump the shark a little bit here. This is
one of our nominees for our Friday Fool of the Week,

(01:26):
Jake Tapper. And this was bizarre coverage of Luigi Mangioni,
the alleged shooter and murderer.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
You can see, let's bring that up if we can.
You can see Mangioni very clearly in the pictures on
the bottom there from the hostel. You can see his eyes.

Speaker 5 (01:42):
In the pictures.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
I think that's from the Starbucks and then from the
very distinctive eyes and eyebrows from the cab. Yes, he's
distinctive looking. You know, there are a lot of kids
out there saying he's good looking.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yeah. I mean he's a murderer and everything, and probably
a psychopath. But is any dreamy and Jimmy ca Emil
made light of this and an extended open during one
of his shows this week. And this featured comments from
his staff members banding about with the scuttle butt between them,
their family members, their friends.

Speaker 6 (02:14):
We definitely know who wins time sexiest alleged murderer of
the year. That would go to Luigi Mangioni, the suspect
in the shooting of the CEO of United Healthcare, who
has become the hottest cold blooded killer in America. I'm
not sure what this says about us, but ever since
these photos of him came out from his holding cell,
from his mugshot, someone found his abs somewhere online. Ryan

(02:39):
Murphy right now is flying and Netflix headquarters in a jetpack.
So many women and so many men are going nuts
over how good looking this killer is.

Speaker 7 (02:51):
And there's a huge wave.

Speaker 6 (02:53):
Of horny washing over us right now. It Slide, one
of the guys you work with says he I had
a dream about you site. When it's the FedEx guy
with the big muscles and the rolled up sleeves, you're.

Speaker 7 (03:03):
Like, oh. But if it's the.

Speaker 6 (03:05):
Bald it guy wearing crocs with black socks you're on
the phone with hr that same dynamic.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Debraah, I want to get your reaction to that first,
and how you see the framing of Luigi Mangioni in
the media.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, thank you so much. I think first of all,
I just want to say reframing this midwman Brian Thompson
left behind a wife and two sons who are sixteen nineteen.
Our son is nineteen years old, and the minute we
get away from the humanity of what actually has occurred here,
but really what it is Ryan, it is part of
an ongoing trend. When you look at you know, we're

(03:42):
talking about Hollywood here, so let's just use that part
of our culture. For instance, there's been a long multi
year push towards people basically associating and identifying with the
anti hero, lifting up that which used to be considered
to be reprehensible, and now we see that so much
more in the media. It's all about lifting up the victims,

(04:04):
the anti hero, pulling and twisting what we see as
common morality. That's lily in a way is just a
sad statement of how far that has been successful and
how far down the road we have gotten there. I mean,
that's all over Hollywood movies. You know, good is bad,
bad is good, everything is morally equivalent, and for people
to be joking about it. It's really really a terrible thing,

(04:28):
you know. It's that influence from Hollywood, from culture, from entertainment.
It's an influence and in other parts of our culture
where you know, the victims are somewhat vilified and the
actual villains are protected. It's upside down and it's not
forbody to wake up. Anyone who laughs at that, and
everyone who thinks it's a joke, it's been really a

(04:50):
conditioning that has happened over several decades of blurring the
morality line.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Debraora somesightful commentary there, and I'll get Christians take on
that in just a moment. Here's some more Jimmy Kimmel,
and again these are from staff members of his sending
out emails, commentary, text messages, et cetera.

Speaker 6 (05:08):
Our staff today. I have never experienced anything like this.
These are screen grabs of actual exchanges between our members
of our staff and their friends, relatives, whatever. I've changed
the names to protect the guilty, but let's say I'll see.
Lorraine Sea asks, do you guys think the United Healthcare
CEO killer is hot? Friend replies yes, I love Luigi.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
I think he's gay.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Though.

Speaker 6 (05:31):
This is an exchange between two of our producers, we'll
call them Alphaba and Glinda. My TikTok is flooded. My
mom chain's going nuts. That's my TikTok. Everyone is obsessed.
People are saying in New York jury has the power
to find him innocent because we all love him. I'm
not mad at him. This one's from Suzy d This

(05:53):
she got hurt, This sex from her mother. Am I
the only person wondering that if the gunman had tweezed
and reshaped his eyebrows, he would have.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Never been caught.

Speaker 7 (06:01):
Aha, good point.

Speaker 6 (06:03):
His eyebrows are very defined.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Now, Christian, where Deborah takes this conversation, I think immediately
back to Natural Born Killers and the mockery that that
film was making of the sensationalistic society that was glorifying violence. Now,
to Deborah's point, you see anti heroes that became prominent,
especially in the two thousands, like Tony soprano Walter White.
Is this an extension of that?

Speaker 3 (06:26):
You know, certainly partly, But those are clearly fictional cases,
and it was over seasons where we saw the humanity
that they had and the terror they caused. So I
think we could be a little more forgiven for having
some empathy for a tony soprano. I think what really
strikes me at the Jimmy Kimmel clips we're playing right
now is the lack of awareness of how badly his

(06:49):
staff looks in this moment. Now, if he's being dark
and he's cracking wise and he kind of wants to
get at his fellow employees, I would get that. I
think he's just amused by this all. He doesn't. You know,
he's been the last five six seventy eight years maybe more,
he's been our moral compass. You know, he talks about
healthcare and when his child was sick, how we need

(07:11):
to change the system. And then more recently where he
cried biggause President Trump gained re election and here he
is yucking it up about this killer who took out
a family man. I mean, it's it really goes you know.
I like kind of dark humor, black humor. I'm okay
with that.

Speaker 7 (07:26):
This isn't it.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
He's not really going for something in macab He's going
for something that he's making glib and doesn't he realize
how I mean, if I worked it, listen, it's just
a window into the soul of this show. It really
is in a way I think no one expected, or
certainly not the staffers Hollywood in total. You can follow
him on X and the Voice.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
You also heard Deborah Flora won the number one on
X and I want to advance this ball down the
field with Pierce Morgan, who had Taylor Lorenz on his
program and tried to get a straight answer out of her,
though this was after she had appeared on TM's and
offered up some of the same regarding a quote and
people wonder why we want these meaning health executives dead?

(08:08):
Pierce Morgan confronted her, and this is how you framed
the question.

Speaker 8 (08:12):
This issue of Brian Tolso, one of the top healthcare
executives in the country. I'm just curious why your first
reaction would be to his cold blooded execution people wonder
why we want these executives dead? And then you later
commented with people were giving a lot of blowback, I'm
all alone. You said healthcare executive down with party balloons.

(08:34):
Was on an expost that you commented on, why would
you be in such a celebratory mood about the execution
of another human being? Aren't you supposed to be on
the caring, sharing left where you know you believe in
the sanctity of life.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
So Pierce Morgan teas it up a second opportunity for
Taylor Lorenz to get this right, and she gets it
even wronger.

Speaker 5 (08:56):
I do believe in the sanctity of life, and I
think that's why i've well, along with so many other
Americans joy unfortunately, you know, because it's seriously I mean execution,
Maybe not joy, but certainly not no, certainly not empathy
because again.

Speaker 7 (09:14):
The footage, how can this make you joyful?

Speaker 8 (09:17):
This guy's a husband, is a father, b being young
down in the middle of Manhattan.

Speaker 7 (09:22):
Why did that make you joys?

Speaker 5 (09:23):
The Americans that be murdered. So are tens So are
the tens of thousands of Americans, innocent Americans who died
because Grady Health Insurance executives like this one Bush policies
of denying care to the most vulnerable people. And the
many millions of Americans that have watched people that I
care about suffer and in some cases die because of

(09:44):
lack of.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
HELSI this moral equivalence and justification and justifies the means. Deborah,
you know, the rich bastards deserve to die. I mean
This goes way beyond what I would think is traditional Marxism.
Taylor Lorenz is full into the crazy right.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
You know, a couple of points I want to make.
First of all, Christian made a great point. One of
the things is the fact and going back to the
previous clip where the previous host was joking about his
staff members finding Luigi Maggioni attractive. One of the things
that happens in our media, elite cultural centers. And I
was in when I'm from Colorado, but I was in

(10:23):
Hollywood for a while. They are in an echo chamber,
and so they're only hearing one another, and it is
a very skewed view of things, and so within that circle,
it kind of feeds upon one another and they think
it's okay. Now, the thing about Taylor Lorenz, it's even worse.
In my opinion, she is quote unquote and I'm doing
air quotes on the radio a journalist. You know, I

(10:46):
always do the air quotes journalists, And that's what she
claims is now she's more of an influencer. It also
shows me where so many lines have gutten blurred. So
let's look at the journalism side of things. Good on
Pierce Morgan for calling just basic humans humanity and decency.
But long ago we moved away true journalism with entertainment tonight,

(11:06):
and then the blurring over in that direction and everything
became commentary or shock value or shock jock activity. That's
part of what I think Taylor is doing here. But
use the word Marxism. And one of the things that
is plaguing our culture is this collectivism idea, Oh, there
are problems with healthcare programs, Well, guess what, then all
healthcare executives should be vilified and be humanized, and they

(11:31):
all deserve it. We saw that in the Me Too movement.
Yes we should right wrongs that have happened to individual women,
but it doesn't mean all men are bad and.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Should pay for it.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
There's a collectivism going in our society and a lack
of understanding and also, just I got to be honest,
a lack of decency. I'm really tired of that, and
I believe a lot of people are reacting against that.
We have a window to pull back from this kind
of very dark precipice where we've ended up.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
There are three points to this triangle Christian that I
want to get you to comment on in just a moment,
and again Christian Toto, along with Debah Flora joining me
Ryan Schuling on this Friday edition of the Right Side
of Hollywood are trying to right the wrongs, as it were,
but Hollywood entertainment industry being one of them, mainstream media
alleged journalism being another point of that triangle, and political

(12:20):
and I'll get to the political in a moment, But
I think we see a lot of people who maybe
formerly were classical liberals. I would put Pierce Morgan in
that can category's very anti gun, but he's center left
and he's sensible, and I think he's just had it
and he definitely had it with Taylor Lorenz right here.

Speaker 7 (12:36):
Yes, heylo. I thought me to be rude. But what
of the are you laughing all the time? I don't
get it, But honestly, I find it unbelievable. What are
you laughing at?

Speaker 5 (12:47):
I am laughing at Tommy's insane mischaracterization of why people
are angry. It has nothing to do with Occupy Wall Street.
This is a This is a feeling that people feel
across the left and the right. You mentioned benhau earlier
in his video about the healthcare exec I encourage people
to check the comment section on that video. Okay, one
hundred percent of America is united on this, or rather

(13:08):
the majority of America is united on this. We do
not think that this healthcare system that is murdering again
thousands of nisent Americans, who, by the way, Tommy, also
have families, also have children. These people are being killed
by our barbaric and evil for profit healthcare system. And
I agree we should not necessarily go around shooting people

(13:28):
in the street. And while I am joyful that this
issue has been brought to attest.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
To hear that Piers not necessarily That's right, Tommy.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
And you know, when I'm looking for sanity, Christian, I
go to the comment section of any article online. Are
you kidding me? Like I subscribe to the NFL Sunday
ticket on YouTube that can relate to this maybe, and
it automatically pops up with these comments sections. I don't
want that in real time at all. But this is
where Taylor runs is getting her confirmation bias.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
It's amazing, I mean, and she's a journal which I
mean again, the term journalist has been devalued so aggressively.
But again, good on peerce Morgan, and you know, his
logic was, well, then we should be murdering other executives
in this space. You know, it's such a naive notion
that if you take out one of the executives the
whole system will change, or that the system other alternatives

(14:21):
are so wonderful, which you've seen in Canada and Britain
with their significant flaws. It is, it is a problem.
I think we've all been touched by frustrations with insurance
to say the very least, but to attack it literally
in this way is just unbelievable. And also that the
new Left is violent. Let's just let's just cut to
the chase. They are violent. They attack speech, they attack

(14:45):
people like this. They've made this person a hero. This
is not atypical. This is not random. Taylor the Renz
is not an odd ball here. She's not an you know,
the exception that proves the rule. She's the rule. These
are violent people. They want violence. They're marching across the
count and the more they get exposed the better. And
if they're on the listen, let's hope they stay in

(15:05):
the comments section because least they're not causing any physical harm.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Yeah, exactly, Deborah I want to get your final comment
here on AOC because it's largely to the point that
Christian was making here where the left and I'm talking
about the fire left, but maybe not so far left,
with some of these mainstream media personalities getting on board
this Luigi Mangione love train, but they see things in
very simplistic, binary caricature, almost cartoonish terms. And here's AOC

(15:32):
an elected representative government saying, look, I don't justify the violence.

Speaker 9 (15:36):
But it's really important that we take a step back.
This is not to comment, and this is not to
say that an act of violence is justified, but I
think for anyone who is confused or shocked or appalled,
they need to understand that people interpret and feel and

(15:58):
experience denied claims as an act of violence against them.
People go homeless over the financial devastation of a diagnosis
that doesn't get addressed, or you know, the amount that
they're going to have to cover with a surprise film
and things like that.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
What stands out to me, Deborah is this dangerous notion.
I think as you frame and warp speech that words
are violence or denying an insurance claim is violence. No
violence is violence killing someone Harming someone physically is violence.
That and that.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Alone, when we get away from any sort of moral absolutes,
which there are some some things are not moral absolutes.
There's always extenuating circumstances, but what rules in our culture today?
And that's exactly what AOC was talking about. How do
people feel If I feel like you were committing violence
against me, then I am justified in committing literal violence.

(16:56):
I also want to frame this in the idea of
storytelling and Hollywood and movies and culture. It's almost as
though everyone today is looking for a purpose. They want
to be the star in their own movie, writing some
egregious wrong and if they can't find a real villain,
they'll make one up. I mean, the way they're talking
about this situation with the murder, the just outright murder

(17:20):
of Brian Thompson, it's as though they're casting themselves in
a Grisham novel, or they're Aaron Brockovich and we're standing
up against the big guy. And you use another word,
which I think is key simplistic, simplistic thinking. Healthcare here
has problems. It is a very complex issue. It is
not a single simple answer to it, and it is
certainly not violence against someone who, from all things we've heard,

(17:44):
was a good person. Even if he wasn't, it still
does not justify murder. But we've gone to a point,
and I do think culture has had so much to
do with this. People looking for a purpose, a passion,
a way to cast themselves as a hero, being ruled
by emotion, domination of actual moral differences, and now moral equialncy,
the elevating of someone as abhorrent as a Luigi Mangioni,

(18:09):
who we are finding out more and more about was
just a very troubled individual. This is really a culmination
of so many factors, as you said, politics, culture as
well as other side shifts, and it's time you pull
back from it. Good on people like Piers Morgan and
even Bill Maher. There's no common sence coming to classical liberals.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
There is common sense. There is a shimmer of light
at the end of the tunnel. Deborah Flora, thanks for
sharing your insights today. We'll join the in studio next
time around. Christian Toto sticks around with me. Our Friday
Fool the Week nominees still to come based Fetterman as
well
