Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Season Tickets Podcast. My name is Nick Wise.
The first time ever we're streaming live on YouTube. It
is the Season Tickets Podcast. That's how you can find
it on YouTube. That's how you can find it on
Apple Podcasts, the iHeartRadio app. My name is Nick Wise.

(00:20):
Thanks for checking it out. Make sure you subscribe on
whatever platform you are watching or listening on. Thank you
seriously so much for checking it out. Today. We're gonna
go over college football tomorrow, we'll hit the NFL on
the podcast. Today going to be college football heavy. Big
news in college football, and I want to preview some
of the games this weekend as well. The big news

(00:41):
when I woke up today, I'm probably one of very
few people who are super excited about this. But the
PAC twelve might be back. I used to enjoy PAC
twelve after dark. We don't get that anymore. Now we
still get the night games, it's just different, right. I'm
a very traditionalist guy. That's why I like college football
so much. A lot of the tradition obviously being killed

(01:04):
because well the killing traditions apparently equals more money. But
the PAC twelve possibly gonna be back in twenty twenty
six if it can find two more members. Right now,
there's only two teams Washington State and Oregon State, but
Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Fresno State all
gonna join. That is six teams. So before twenty twenty six,

(01:24):
before this can happen, they got to find two more members.
My first choice would be Callen Stanford. It just wouldn't
make sense for either of them to leave the ACC
because the new PAC twelve it's not gonna generate the
money that the ACC makes. So despite it making more
sense geographical reasons, it's never gonna happen because the bottom line,

(01:50):
it comes down to money and Stanford and Cal gonna
make a lot more money from TV dollars in the
ACC than they ever will in the PAC twelve. But
I would love to see them go back into that
conference and play on the West Coast, and that would
make it, you know, a decent little conference with some
decent brands. You know. I think Boise State's a pretty
good brand when it comes to college football, President State

(02:12):
as well, Washington State organization, they're decent brands. But Callen
Stanford would definitely take it to another level when it
comes to brands. Hey, Cal coming off of that win,
going into SEC country knocking off Auburn last weekend. How
about that. You know, Justin Wilcox, the coach of Cal,
he's always got his team prepared for big games. They

(02:35):
went in there and they handled Auburn and gave Hugh
Freeze their first loss of the year. And not that
Auburn is a is a great SEC team right now,
although they're recruiting very well. They were a twelve point
favorite in that game. I think the most common question
we're getting this week in the world of college football
is Nebraska back. Everybody wants the Cornhuskers to be back,

(02:57):
and I think, you know, if they're back, it's good
for college football. They have not been relevant for quite
some time, really since the Tom Osborne days. You know,
I think back to the they're back to being relevant.
You know, are they necessarily back as a powerhouse. No,
we're not there yet. But are they back to being
relevant and fun to watch? Absolutely? I think Dylan Royola,

(03:18):
he's a quarterback you want to be familiar with. I
think he's going to be a star in the game
over the next couple of years. He is a five
star recruit. He was once committed to Georgia ended up
flipping his recruitment to Nebraska, where his uncle is on
the coaching staff. You know, I think the kid is
he's uber talented. I think the gimmick that he has
where he he warms up like Patrick Mahomes, he throws

(03:39):
it like Patrick Mahomes, his facial hairs Patrick Mahomes. He's
got the same sunglasses of Patrick Mahomes. That part's a
little bit weird, but hey, to each their own right.
That's his thing, that's his thing. I probably, you know,
I grew up vitalizing Tom Brady. I probably wouldn't try
to be Tom Brady with my looks and my warm

(04:00):
up routine and my celebrations. I'd want to be myself.
But if that's his thing, that's his thing. Nebraska's got
a really good chance to be seven and oh when
they play the buck Eyes on October twenty sixth, that
could be a college game day game. That's gonna be
a massive game if they are able to get to
that point. Now, is it gonna be automatic that October

(04:23):
twenty sixth, they're seven and no, No, because they're still
a young team, but they are going to be favored
in every game they play up until that matchup with
Ohio State, and if they can go into Columbus, then yeah,
they're back if they win that game. Now, I don't
see Nebraska winning that game. I don't see Nebraska as
a playoff team this year. I think, really Nebraska needs
to get to a bowl game, and I think they're

(04:45):
gonna do that, and that would be the first time
they've reached that goal since twenty and sixteen. Do I
think that matt rule will get them to the playoffs
in the Dylan Rayola era, Yeah, I believe they will.
And look, it could happen this year. Their schedule is
very favorable in the Big in the Big Ten, they
don't play Michigan, and even if they did, I'd probably

(05:06):
pick them to win at this point because Nebraska's got
a really good defense and they do have an offense.
More importantly, they've got a quarterback, something Michigan doesn't have.
But you know, Michigan is the national champions in college football,
so I'll give them that respect. They don't play Michigan,
they don't play Oregon, and look, Oregon has not looked
like the Oregon that everybody was picking to win the
national championship this far. I do think Oregon will get

(05:29):
better as you know, time goes on, but it's yet
to be seen, right, And but again, I'm still gonna
say Oregon's gonna be there at the end of the year.
I picked them to play in the Big Ten title
game against Ohio State. I still think that's going to happen.
I think Ohio State's gonna win the Big Ten, but
I still think Oregon will eventually figure things out and

(05:50):
get there. And so Nebraska doesn't play Michigan organ They
also don't play pig Penn State either. In the Big Ten.
Their biggest matchups are gonna be OSU, which I mentioned
a minute ago. They got USC. That's going to be
a challenging one because USC really one of my surprise
teams so far this year. It wasn't the fact that
they beat LSU that surprised me, being a four point underdog.

(06:12):
You know, it really can go either way. It was
more or less how they won it, right, We all
expected that game to be a shootout. I believe the
over under that night was in the sixties. I think
upper fifties. Maybe I don't remember it right off the top,
of my head. But regardless, it was very high. I
think it was in the sixties sixty four. I played it.

(06:32):
I did not win. It's the way that USC won though,
rights They won by stopping LSU multiple times on defense
and they put on like fourteen hundred pounds As a team.
USC is officially now built to play in the Big Ten.
The Big Ten, they're a little bit bigger than the
Pac twelve, right, Pac twelve is more of a speed game.

(06:53):
You go into the Big Ten, not much about speed,
it's more about in the trenches. In USC, I think
realize that got stronger in the trenches, and that's why
they're one of my surprise teams here thus far in
this early twenty twenty four college football season. So USC
gonna be a tough matchup for Nebraska. But I do

(07:14):
think they get to a bowl game. I think they're
a bubble playoff team. I just I don't know if
it's gonna happen this year. Again, we haven't seen enough.
Were talking about a game against UTEP in a game
against Colorado where they looked really good against Colorado. But
Colorado to me is I think Dan Lanning said the
best they play for clicks. Colorado's not that good. We

(07:34):
keep putting them on this pedestal. They get all of
this attention because of who their coach is, but he
doesn't coach, he doesn't recruit. And if you're not going
to recruit in college football, you're never gonna be good.
And I've seen so many people, you know, doing this
show here in Tampa Bay. I've seen so many people
talking about Dion Sanders is going to be the guy
that replaces Mike Norvel because obviously things in Tallahassee aren't

(07:58):
going great this year. Florida State's never going to hire
Dion Sanders. You would be crazy to hire Dion Sanders.
I don't think Colorado's crazy for hiring Dion Sanders because
he's bringing in a lot of money to that university. Right,
they haven't sold a lot of tickets, they haven't won
a lot of football games over the years. All of
a sudden, they're winning a couple of games, not much.

(08:19):
They probably expected to win more, but they're selling tickets
and there's excitement in Boulder for the team. Now, how
long will this excitement go on for It's not going
to go on for very long if they don't start
winning football games. Eventually the deon Sanders coach prime thing's
gonna wear off. And look, I don't know if they're
ever going to get to where we thought they were,

(08:42):
because if you're not winning with guys like Travis Hunter,
who is gonna be a Heisman candidate all year long?
This year? Shador Sanders, you know, people are talking about
him being a top five pick, and back to Travis Hunter,
a lot of people talking about him being the number
one overall pick in the draft. So you might have
two top five players on this offense at Colorado and

(09:02):
you're struggling to win games. I don't know how it
ever gets better than what you have right now. You know,
are you going to finally recruit a defense and boulder
to help out your offense? So you know, I want
to see more from Nebraska before we declare if they
are quote unquote back, But I think they are on
the right path. And Matt Ruhle I loved what he

(09:25):
did at Baylor. Obviously didn't work out in the NFL,
but I think he's a really good college football coach
and I think he was the perfect higher for Nebraska,
and it's looking like it was a home run higher,
at least early on here in the twenty twenty four season.
Notre Dame. Another question A lot of people ask should
Notre Dame be eliminated from the College Football Playoff? And

(09:47):
I've gone back and forth on this, and I think
a lot of it really depends on how does Northern
Illinois do. I know, right away we look at this
loss and go, wow, that was a really bad loss,
and it was if you're not a Dame, you can't
lose to a MAX school. That should never happen. It's
not supposed to happen. Notre Dames dropped some games here
and the Marcus Freeman era that you just can't happen

(10:10):
in Notre Dame. Remember two years ago it was Marshall.
This year it's Northern Illinois. Whether or not Notre Dame
is eliminated, really depends on the success of Northern Illinois,
right Like, maybe Northern Illinois ends this season ranked, then
the loss doesn't look as bad. Right now the ranked
number twenty five behind Notre Dame. But that's just that's

(10:30):
college football for you, right Like, how can you have
Northern Illinois be ranked higher than Notre Dame after they
just played? Now, Don't get me wrong. If these two
teams played ten times, Notre Dame probably wins nine. But
the fact is they only play one time in Northern
Illinois one. But whether or not, let's back to the
real question. Can Notre Dame get to the playoff? How

(10:54):
much success does Northern Illinois have this year if they
are able to run the table in the MAC. I
think if you'r Notre Dame, you're really rooting for them
to go undefeated in the MAC. And what you don't
want is for Northern Illinois to get blown out by
North Carolina State. That's their final power for game. It's
North Carolina State in two weeks. Northern Illinois is going

(11:15):
to be coming off with the by going into that game,
so they're gonna have an opportunity to win. If your
Notre Dame, you're really rooting for in Northern Illinois to
knock off another power for school. That makes the loss
now look so bad. And if Northern Illinois ranked at
the end of the year, I don't think your loss one,
it doesn't look nearly as bad. No one's really talking
about it. And if you're Notre Dame, you're eleven and one.

(11:38):
You know, at the end of the year. Yeah, I
think they can still get into the playoffs. I don't
think Notre Dame can lose again. They cannot afford another loss.
The schedule is still very favorable. However, I said that
a couple of weeks ago, I thought Notre Dame was
one of those teams. It's funny because we did a
podcast after a week one, I gave you three teams
that made their path to the playoff much easier. Notre
Dame was one of those teams. I said, Notre Dame's

(12:00):
maybe the best chance of all to get to the
college football playoff. The schedule's favorable. They're gonna be favored
in every game the rest of the way, and really
their only opponent I was worried about left down their
schedules USC at the very end of the year. I
thought they'd at Warschool eleven and one. Well, now they're
looking at ten and two. You know, will Florida State
get better to make their schedule a little bit tougher.

(12:21):
I don't know if I'm seeing anything out of Florida
State that makes me think that's gonna happen. So Notre Dame, Yes,
they got a favorable schedule, But at the end of
the day, when you just lose to Northern Illinois, obviously
I can't chalk up any game on their schedule as
an automatic win. So I don't think Notre Dame is
eliminated yet, but I think they've got very slim chance

(12:42):
to win, and they really have no room for eer error.
The games I'm looking forward to this weekend. Let's previous
some college football games in week three. It is finally here.
Love college football. I'll be honest, even someone like me
who loves college football, I watch from noon to really
two o'clock in the morning. I will stay up for
the late games because there were some good late games
last weekend. You know Boise State in Oregon. If you

(13:05):
stayed up late to watch that game, you got a
hell of a football game you got to watch. Boise
State almost pulled it out. They should have won that game,
really they should have. Oregon ends up winning because of
a punt return and then they kick a last minute
field goal. Boise State had him on the ropes, and
I was definitely rooting for the upset. If you've listened
to the podcast before, Ashton Genty, I'm a big fan

(13:27):
of his He is the best running back in college football.
Just a fun player to watch. So far in the season,
he's already got I'd have to do the math real
quick to sixty seven plus one ninety three. He's looking
at four or five. He's almost got six hundred rushing yards.
And actually does he have six hundred rushing yards? It's close.
I don't know. I'm not good at math. That's why

(13:48):
I'm talking sports. And he's got nine touchdowns. So it
was a tough matchup for Oregon, but a great late
night game. Boise State fun to watch when they're on
the road, and all I watching him at home because
I can't stand their football field. The blue drives me crazy.
So this weekend not a great slate of games. I
really had to dig to find something here for you.
So here we go Friday night. This might be one

(14:12):
of the best games of the weekend. And it's on
a Friday, eight o'clock on the East Coast on Fox,
number twenty, Arizona taking on number fourteen Kansas State. They
are both in the Big twelve. Now Arizona moves over
from the Pac twelve. Something you need to know about
this game college football. We know, it's in a really
weird place, a lot of changes, a lot of things

(14:34):
we're not familiar with. Something you need to know about
this game. It is not a Big twelve conference game.
It is a non conference matchup, despite the fact they're
both in the conference. This happened last week as well
between Baylor and Utah. Utah b Baylor, but Baylor is
not zero to one in conference play and Utah is
now want to know, in conference play. These matchups are

(14:56):
part of home and homes series, and they played last
year Arizona in case State. This is the second game
of that home at home and so it was already
pre scheduled and it's going to be a non conference game.
Two really good quarterbacks in this game, Avery Johnson, who
beat out Will Howard who had to transfer then went
onto Ohio State. The fact that he was able to
beat out a kid who was good enough to start

(15:16):
at Ohio State shows you it's pretty good, right. A
lot of hype on Avery Johnson. He won his bowl
game last year, and really that's when he kind of
took the world over by storm. People really liking his play.
Noah Fafida for Arizona great quarterback as well, I got
a lot of respect for Noah Fafida because he could
have left Arizona. You know, Jetfish takes the job at
Washington after Caitlin de Boor went to Alabama and Noah

(15:38):
Fafida and McMillan star receiver Arizona. Both of them were like,
you know what, we're gonna stay and finish our legacy
here in Tucson. We're not going to transfer up to
Washington despite it being a bigger program. And you know,
Jetfish could have taken Noah Ffida and McMillan with him.
Washington is right away, you know, not to where they

(16:00):
were last year, but they don't take as big of
a drop off, and they probably took a bigger drop
off than any other program from twenty three to twenty four.
I would say that man Michigan right, but I think
even Washington probably took a bigger hit. At least Michigan
still has four first round talents on their team. Washington,
it's really bottom of the barrel right now. But Noah

(16:21):
fafieda great quarterback going up against Avery Johnson, great quarterback.
The over under in this game is at sixty, So
if you like offense, you should get plenty of it
in this game. Really really fun Friday night matchup. And look,
there's really not any ranked versus ranked games this weekend,
so this is this is definitely one of the premier

(16:41):
matchups with playoff implications. For sure. These two teams could
meet again in the Big twelve championship game. That game
would be a conference game. Number four Alabama. They're going
to travel to Wisconsin. Is this game competitive? Probably not.
Wisconsin hasn't looked good so far this year. They're trying

(17:03):
different things. It's just it's not working. Their run game
isn't as dominant. Tyler van Dyke comes over. You remember
him from Miami. He's got one of the worst QB
ratings in college football. They're trying to be different with
Phil Longo. It's just it hasn't worked. I think, really,
I put this game on here because it's two premiere programs.
It's the SEC going north. That's something I'm intrigued by

(17:26):
because the SEC never goes north. In fact, that's one
of the things I'm looking forward to more than anything
when it comes to the college football playoff is seeing
SEC teams go north, have to play in the cold weather,
have to play in those environments that they just have
never had to play in before. Usually when an SEC
team plays, let's say a Big ten team in a

(17:48):
bowl game, you know, it could be the the Outback Bowl, now,
the relya Quest Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Gator Bowl. They're all
in Florida, right, and it's humid oftentimes, and it's the
weather can favor the SEC teams. I'm not saying that's
why they win. The SEC is definitely the premiere, more
dominant conference, There's no question there. But I'm excited to

(18:09):
see how an Ole Miss does going to Happy Valley, right,
how will Alabama do if they were to have to
go to Columbus. Those are going to be fun matchups
that I'm looking forward to seeing. This is kind of
that appetizer. However, it's not going to be very cold
in Wisconsin this weekend. It will be windy though, so
if you're looking to bet on the game, I would
look at the under if you were going to bet.

(18:32):
I haven't deep. I haven't really gone into this game
deep enough to look at the trends and see which
way I'm going to go. I think the line is
at sixteen. I'd probably look at the under. With the
win possibly being a factor at eleven miles per hour.
They're calling Alabama coming off of a very struggling game
with USF for three quarters. They struggled. Now if you
look at just the box score, right you open up

(18:53):
the app Sunday morning, Oh who all won? Yesterday? I
didn't get to watch Alabama blew out USF forty two sixteen.
That game was fourteen to thirteen going in the fourth quarter.
Like Alabama in their depth steam rolled them at the end,
but they had to put up a fight to get
through USF for the second year in a row. Last year, Alabama,

(19:15):
like I said, just struggled to USF. They won that
game seventeen to three. The very next week they came
back to be Ole Miss number nine, twenty four to ten.
And I expect them to beat Wisconsin this weekend sixteen LSU,
they traveled to South Carolina. I really only bring this
game up for one reason only. It's not really an
appealing matchup, right, LSU should win. It's really more it's

(19:38):
one of the only conference matchups of the weekend. That's
why I put it on here, so it'll be a
must watch game here in the noon window Memphis at
Florida State. Now. The reason I put this one on
here for a couple of reasons. One, I do this
show live in Florida and a lot of Florida State fans, right,
So that's one reason. Djuyungalula another. Trying to see if

(19:58):
he's gonna figure this thing out. Finally he has looked very,
very bad. But Mike Norvell, the head coach for Florida State,
is taking on his old program in Memphis. So that's
an interesting storyline. And I put it on here as
well because I think this is a must win game
for both of these schools for much different reasons. Florida State,
I think we already look at them that their playoff

(20:19):
chances are over. Now, they're not completely dead, right, because
they can still win the ACC. It's a long shot,
but it could still happen. But it's still a must
win for Florida State because they can't go zero to three.
It's unacceptable in Tallahassee. So that's why it's a must
win game for fshoot. Now for Memphis, it's a must
win game if they want to be the group of
five team that gets to the playoff. If Memphis wants

(20:42):
to get to the playoff. I believe they're gonna have
to do it and be undefeated. You're not gonna be
able to have one blip on the radar because Boise
State looks to be really good and if they were
to run the table, their only lost being to Oregon,
which was a really close loss in the game they
should have won. I think they're gonna get that bid
now Memphis and win over Florida State. I know it's
not a top ten, you know, Florida State team like

(21:04):
they probably wanted it to be. I would still be
a signature win over a power for conference team, and
it's must win for Memphis if they want to be
a playoff team, and they are one of the group
of fives that I've got as contenders for the playoff.
UTSA was one of my contenders. They lost last week
and now they got Texas this weekend. Probably not going

(21:25):
to be in the playoff this year. Texas A and
M and Florida premier game this weekend. That's why I
got it on here. Neither of these team has been
impressive this far, just like LSU and South Carolina. Though
we get to see two SEC teams face each other,
and usually when there's two SEC teams facing each other
at three thirty, I try to watch it right, it's
usually the premier game of the weekend, not on CBS,

(21:48):
though on ABC. Gotta get used to that. It's weird
not seeing the SEC on CBS. Now it's the Big Ten.
Fans probably not gonna like this. If you're a Gators fan,
think Graham Mertz going to be the starter. I think
it's the right call for Billy Napier. Lagway is going
to see some time in this game. And yes, DJ
Lagway had a great performance last week, but it was Samford.

(22:10):
You really couldn't get a read on the Skaters team
or DJ Lagway. You didn't learn anything about this team
last weekend because the opponent was such at a lower
tier opponent that you were supposed to crush them, and
the game played out exactly how it should have, so
nothing was really learned. I like the fact that Billy
Napier is going to go back to Graham Mertz. I
know we're more excited for DJ Lagway and we want

(22:31):
to see the future and the unknown, and we want
to play for next year. I still think DJ Lagway
has room to grow and get better, and he can
have a lot of benefits by not playing full time.
And Graham Mertz was one of the better quarterbacks in
the SEC last year. I keep saying this, he was
very underrated. For him to lose his job to a concussion,
I don't think would be right. So respect for billiy

(22:53):
Napier to go back to Graham Mertz against Texas A
and m This game is in the swamp. Texas A
and M is favorite. I'm definitely excited for this, man.
I think it's gonna be a close game. I think
Florida will be much more competitive in this game than
they were a couple of weeks ago against Miami. I
don't see either of these teams winning the SEC, so
I think both of them must win it if they

(23:13):
want to stay alive for at large bids to get
into the playoff. I think Florida is not I don't
think they're gonna be a contender for the playoff, but
if we want to drag it out another week and
pretend they are, then this is a must win game.
But Florida, I don't have them in a world winning
more than five games. If they were to get to
a Bowl game. This year, with the way they've looked

(23:35):
in the schedule that they face, that'd be impressive, but
I don't at this point really see it happening. Texas
A and M has a more realistic chance of that
happening for them getting into the playoff as an at large.
Another matchup looking forward to this weekend. Two rivalry opponents
to your two rivalry games, Oregon taking on Oregon State,

(23:57):
Washington and Washingtington State playing each other. Happy these rivalries
stayed despite Oregon and Washington moving on to the Big
Ten and leaving Oregon State and Washington State in the dust.
I'm glad the Civil War and Apple Coup will continue
these games. You know, it's good for college football. They're
on the schedule because a lot of times with conference realignment,

(24:17):
we lose games like this, right we lost Colorado in Nebraska,
which we got to see last weekend. We lost Texas
A and M in Texas, which we'll get to see
at the end of the year. So I'm really happy
that these universities were able to keep these games on
the schedule. They played this weekend, and I'll definitely be
checking those out in the most expensive ticket of the weekend.
What college football game do you think it is? Now?

(24:39):
Giving you all the games so far, really the bigger ones,
and you got some SCC games in there. You've got
Alabama in there taking on a Big ten team. But
the most expensive ticket of the weekend it's Colorado and
Colorado State. This was a fun one last year, a
lot of trash talk leading up to that game. Colorado
State played it very closely. That game was in Boulder.
It's going to be at colle Colorado State this year,

(25:00):
most expensive ticket of the weekend. I'm gonna continue my
trend of betting against Colorado because it's worked so far
this year. They' zero and two against the spread. I
just don't trust Colorado at all. I don't trust their defense.
Their offense got shut down last week when they faced
a good defense. Now Colorado State doesn't have the defense
in Nebraska, but Colorado State's got some offensive firepower. And

(25:23):
I know you could go back to Week one and
be like what they got shut out against Texas. They
could still be really good in this game because Colorado
can't stop anybody. And until Colorado does cover a spread,
I'm gonna keep the trend going. I'm gonna keep betting
