Speaker 2 (00:00):
It is Nick.
Speaker 1 (00:01):
Why's the podcast version? Thank you so much for checking
this out. It is Tuesday, September tenth, twenty twenty four.
In this podcast, we will cover week two of college football,
and I think it's we got to start.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
With what made me feel good on Saturday?
Speaker 1 (00:19):
All right, before we get into the stuff that made
me sad on Saturday, We'll start about what made me happy.
We'll put a smile on my face after watching my
team get destroyed by the Texas Longhorns. You would think
after that game, there is no way that I could
possibly smile on a college football Saturday.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Oh but I did.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
And that smile came right around six point thirty when
Notre Dame lined up to kick a sixty two yard
field goal to beat Northern Illinois, only to have it blocked.
Northern Illinois wins the game. They're now ranked twenty fifth
in the country, which is weird because it's still behind
Notre Dame. Notre Dame falls down to where did Notre
(01:01):
Dame fault? I think it was the nine eighteen. Notre
Dame falls to eighteen, so they're ahead of Northern Illinois,
which absurd, right because they just lost to Northern Illinois.
But if you want to tell me Notre Dame is
a better team than Northern Illinois and they'd probably win nine
out of ten times, I will believe that, and you're
most likely right. Notre Dame coming off of what was
(01:22):
an emotional win against Texas A and M in Week one.
It was a win where they went into on the
road in the SEC top ten opponent got the w
and well, no, I'm sorry, a ranked opponent Texas A
and M wasn't in top ten.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Regardless, you went into Kyle Field.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
You got to win where you were an underdog, and
Notre Dame starts the season on a high. Now, that
is something if you're a veteran college sports constantly look
for teams that are coming off of a big high.
Notre Dame coming off of that high. They were laying
twenty eight points against Northern Illinois. Northern Illinois was always
going to cover four touchdowns. I did not expect them
to win outright, but I had the full expectation that
(02:01):
they would cover the very next game. Now, if you're
looking at the betting lines and you want to try
to find a scenario like that this week, I think
places where I'm looking I would obviously the first spot
I'm gonna look is who's Northern Illinois play. Well, they're
on a bye, so unfortunately we can't play them because
I would be betting against Northern Illinois. Whoever it is
(02:23):
they're playing. Iowa State just had that emotional win over Iowa.
I look at to see who does Iowa State play
in Week three? Unfortunately they are also on a bye.
So you got to try to find those teams that
are coming off of an emotional victory.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
You know.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
I would say one that kind of falls in this
category for Week three, Texas is playing UTSA. That is
a game that maybe you can lean on UTSA to cover.
See UTSA just lost and I think they got caught.
Looking ahead to Texas. That's spread right now is at
thirty four and a half. If that gets up to
thirty five, I'm gonna play UTSA. Texas coming off of
(03:04):
an emotional victory. They put it all out onto the
line to whip, you know, the butts of the national champions.
And I don't expect Texas to win by thirty five
this weekend against UTSA. So that's what I look for
in trends when it comes to betting and that Northern
Illinois won. It was always going to be Northern Illinois
in the twenty eight Again, never saw them covering. So
(03:26):
if you're a better try to look for that those
kinds of things in college football because that can definitely
win you money. Unfortunately, two of those teams not in
action this weekend. Oklahoma actually Oklahoma State, they just had
an emotional win, right they defeated Arkansas, they came back.
Now they got Utah this weekend. Probably would stay off
(03:47):
of that because I think Oklahoma State just kind of
got lost, possibly looking ahead to Utah to begin with,
didn't take Arkansas serious and that ended up being a
really big game for the Big Twelve. Because if you're
Oklahomahoma State, and you know you're one of the projected
favorites to win the Big Twelve along with with Utah
and Kansas State, and people are talking about how experienced
(04:09):
you are, you cannot lose to a bottom feeder of
the SEC that makes your entire conference look bad, and
that you know the way that the ACC looks bad
losing to Vanderbilt, you know the SEC. I'm sorry, the
Big Twelve looked almost just as bad had Oklahoma State
been able to pull off the Arkansas or the upset
(04:29):
or I'm sorry, I'm getting so confused here. The same
thing almost happened to the Big Twelve, had Arkansas beat
Oklahoma State, but that did not happen. Oklahoma State will
play Utah this weekend and that should be a great game, right,
It's gonna come down to those two teams I think
for that conference, Kansas State.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
And the mix as well.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Avery Johnson were a fan of him at quarterback for
k State, obviously beating out Will Howard who is now
with the Ohio State Buckeyes. But those are two of
the games I had this week that I thought were
really good, Arkansas Oklahoma State. It was back and forth.
Arkansas was getting ten in that game. That was never
in doubt that they were going to cover Northern Illinois
and Notre Dame. We touched on for a minute. Why
(05:08):
is Notre Dame honestly still ranked? It kind of bothers me.
They are you lost to a MAC team, They are
solely based on their brand name, and that is it.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
You lost to a MAX school, you shouldn't be ranked.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
And now the question is should Notre Dame be eliminated
from the playoff. And the answer is yes, they don't
have a very difficult schedule, and it's become even less
difficult now that Florida State looks to be not very good.
You know, Notre Dame's got one more test down their
schedule at USC at the very end of the year.
And look, maybe you can call Florida State a test.
(05:43):
Maybe Florida State turns it around by the time those
two play each other. I just don't have much faith
in dj ujung l Lay. Therefore, I don't have much
faith in the Notre Dame schedule getting much better. So
Notre Dame should not be ranked. Notre Dame should be
eliminated from the playoff. That is a bad loss. That
is a loss that get you eliminated from the playoff
in week two. In my opinion, Notre Dame's loss is
(06:06):
worse than both of Florida State's losses all right, at
least for Florida State's losses were to Power five schools.
Shouldn't are Power four. Should Florida State of lost any
of those games?
Speaker 2 (06:15):
No? Was it bad?
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yes, But that's how bad Notre Dame's loss was. And
the fact that they're still ranked. Absolutely ridiculous. Pitton Cincinnati,
great back and forth game. If you follow Knicks Picks,
you know we sweat that one out a little bit,
but we covered. If you don't follow Knicks Picks, week one,
seven and two. Week two we went seven and five.
(06:36):
So we are fourteen and seven on the season. That's
pretty good, guys. Sixty six percent winning percentage not bad.
That's gonna that's gonna be nice if we can keep
that trend up the entire year. If you want Knicks picks,
always follow me on social media. I put them out
for the college game at eleven thirty on Saturdays. I
am nick Wise. That is how you find me on
(06:56):
Twitter and Instagram. I am nick. I ze one game
that we didn't hit in Knicks Picks, though we had Iowa.
They unfortunately lost the game outright and the over hitting
this game, the over under was thirty five and a half.
It went over for the first time and the first
time in a long time anyways. I don't think that's
(07:18):
the first time it's ever gone over in their rivalry,
but first time the overs cash it in quite some time,
at least I believe it did.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Let me do my.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Math here, hold on, I'm so bad at math. I
want to double check and make sure it was nineteen
to seventeen.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, it was over. It was thirty five and a half.
The total was thirty six is what they.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Had, so it did hit the over look. That game
is exciting if you love college football. If you're just
checking out college football for the first time this year,
Iowa Iowa State, probably not for you, but Ioioa State.
You know, being a college football guy, I was into it.
Good defenses and you know that game. Despite the under
(07:59):
not hitting, you always have to bet the under in
that game, right, That is the one game where the
under is a fun bet. Like I hate betting unders,
even though you have a better chance to win with
an under, you just always do because everybody bets the
over because it's more fun that game. You always got
to bet the under and just root for punts and
it's fun and it's it's different than any other game,
(08:19):
that's for sure. Oregon and Boise State, if you stayed
up until ten o'clock to watch this one on Peacock,
you've got issues. I have issues. I watch this game,
very good game. Ashton Genty is the best running back
in college football. And if you haven't had a chance
to watch this guy run, you got to watch some
Boise State football. And I know what people are thinking,
(08:40):
who is watching Boise State football? No, I get it.
The bluefield, it's hideous. I hate watching them when they're
at home. I prefer when they're on the road. But
Ashton genty is so good. You know, Week one, he
went for two hundred and sixty seven yards and six touchdowns.
He follows up that performance against.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Oregon, and you know, he ended up with I think
it was one hundred and ninety two rushing yards. Let's
pull that out, make sure.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Yeah, one hundred and ninety two rushing yards on twenty
five carries and three more touchdowns. His longest run went
for seventy yards against Oregon. Is it time to panic
about Oregon? I think it might be. Organ does not
look good at all. First, you know, with Idaho, I thought,
you know, maybe they're just kind of looking ahead. It's
(09:26):
the first game of the year. A lot of teams
struggle in game number one. They got Boise State coming
in the following week. Organ has never beaten Boise State.
They did win this weekend thirty seven thirty four. But
you know, I gave him a pass in that Idaho game.
And then you know, really against Oregon against Boise State,
you know, they keep it close again. You know, they
(09:47):
went out a last second field goal thirty seven, thirty four,
and organ continues to struggle. And it's not like daily
Dylan Gabriel is playing, you know, horrible, but he's not
playing great. He's definitely not bow Nicks'. And it's clear
and Oregon's got a lot to clean up because right
now they do not look anything close to a national
(10:09):
championship contender. In fact, out of all the teams that
moved from the Pac twelve into the Big Ten, they
do not look like.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
The best team that moved over. It actually looks like
usc is at the moment.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
They got a forty eight nothing victory, albeit it was
Utah State, But Oregon, if you're a Ducks fan, you're
in Eugene listening to this, you're in panic mode right now.
The Michigan and Texas game, Michigan offense, it just it
wasn't good. Michigan does not have the talent or the
blockers to play the style of football that they want
to play. They're trying to play what they've what they've
(10:41):
done the last three years, and that's play volleyball. And
unfortunately that's just something they can't do anymore. The offensive
line cannot make that happen. The offensive line very disappointing.
That's not what I expected to see from the Wolverines
this year. At however, their quarterback play, which is disappointing.
I did expect bad quarterback. However, the offensive line, that
(11:03):
one is just that one's a little bit surprising to me.
And look, I know that it's a completely different offensive
line than they had a year ago. They lose fifteen
to twenty two starters and it's showing right, And they
didn't go to the portal for a quarterback. And I
don't think Michigan's the type of school that's.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Ever going to do something like that.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
You're not going to see them do what Florida State
did or what Miami did going out there and getting quarterbacks. Now,
it didn't work out great for Florida State. They got
dj Uyunglila, who look him to be like a waste
of money, but hey, at least he's got that Polar
Pop money. But it's working out for Miami. They went
out and they bought cam Ward and he looks to
be absolutely incredible and definitely a contended for the Heisman
(11:43):
this year. But Michigan is not going to be one
of those teams that goes into the portal to buy
a quarterback. And if they don't start to do stuff
like that, they're going to fall back out of relevancy
real fast. You know, there's a good chance that they
end up being just like Clemson.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
You know.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
I think that they have adapted to the portal a
little bit more. They do accept transfers, unlike Dabo, who
doesn't take any. But you know, they don't pay the
big name recruits. They will get you money once you
get on campus, but they don't spend money in free agency.
Let's just call it what it is. It's free agency,
and they don't spend money for it. And that's why
they don't have a guy like cam Ward and they're
(12:21):
stuck with Davis Warren. And again I don't put the
loss all on him. I think the offensive line has
a lot to blame, but Michigan is trying to run
a playbook that just doesn't fit the talent they have.
In my opinion, I think the one positive for the Wolverines.
Out of that Texas game, you know, if there is
one Will Johnson, I think the guy solidified himself as
(12:42):
a top five pick in the NFL draft. You never
heard his name one time if you watch the game,
not once the only time way you did one time,
and it was when there was a dump pass off
to the left. The running back took it nearly to
the end zone and Will Johnson ran all the way
across the field to make the play. Other than that,
you didn't hear his name called because he shut down
(13:04):
one side of the field completely. That is something that
has definitely wanted in today's NFL. I thought Will Johnson
definitely raised his stock looking at Heisman performances over the weekend,
you know, sticking with that game, quinn Ewers was remarkable.
Twenty four to thirty six. He had three touchdowns. And
what Texas did on third down like that was the
(13:25):
biggest difference in the game. The Michigan defense got them
to third down often. The problem was every single time
it was third down, quinn Ewers was able to find
the open receiver and they got the first down. And
it was just it was long drives. Every drive that
they took was sustained long drive and ended with points.
(13:46):
For the most part, I think they punted the football
one time, and then the very first drive of the
game they missed a wide open or a wide open
I don't know. I don't know why I'm talking like
this is a basketball game. They missed a field goal,
you know, I think it was like forty two yards out.
But other than that, the Texas offense was absolutely unstoppable.
(14:06):
I think Texas appears to be really really good once again.
And you know, if Texas and Michigan would have met
in the National Championship Game last year, I don't know
if Michigan wins that game. I think that, you know,
Washington beating Texas was the best thing that happened to
the Wolverines because I don't think they would have beaten Texas.
Now we'll never know, because the two teams that played
(14:28):
this weekend were obviously not the same two teams that
were their year ago.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Actually both teams were better last year.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Texas had a you know, they lost two defensive tackles
to the NFL, you know, and the Michigan again replacing
fifteen of their twenty two starters. It would have been
a good game last year. I think it's the national
championship everybody wanted. Unfortunately we didn't get to see it.
And you know, Texas shows they are are better than
Michigan locally here in Tampa. You know, we didn't have
(14:56):
the seminoles in action USF. They looked really good for
three quarters against Alabama. I think that USF as long
as Alex Kolish is the coach there, which look, I
don't know how much longer that's gonna be. He's doing
a really fine job. As long as he's the coach there,
I don't know how many of these schools are going
to sign on to play USF.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
They are a nightmare. The Gators got him next year,
and that's that's gonna.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
Be a scary game if you're the Gators, because that's
going to be the super Bowl for USF. And when
USF locks into these games, they show up and they're prepared,
and they gave Alabama a fight for three quarters.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
The final score of that game.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Really not indicative of how that game really went down,
because Alabama really was you know, they were pushed to
the brink. And I loved the shots from ESPN of
all of the fans at Bryant Denny Stadium and their reactions.
Nothing better than the college football fan reactions and the
TV cameras catching it. But look, there were a lot
(15:56):
of fans, you know, Alabama fans with their you know,
pulling their hair out, and that was because of USF.
And I thought that was pretty incredible. To see the
final score forty two to sixteen. You nearly had to
be worried about the spread. But you know, that game
was going into the fourth quarter a one point game
and then Alabama scored twenty eight points in the fourth quarter.
(16:19):
You know, that's just a good example of one team
having a lot more depth and having a lot more
gas in the tank and kind of like last year,
USF just kind of ran out of gas at the end. Again,
the score not indicative of how that game really went down.
You know, I had that game on in the living room.
The wife was doing something on the iPad and I
was trying to explain to her what was happening in
(16:40):
this game. I'm like, this is one of the biggest
upsets ever. If they were to pull this off, I'm like,
this would be huge, And I'm like, this is the
school here in Tampa right down the road.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
We've passed there, and so we started watching it.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
And then once Alabama went up two scores, I knew
that USF did not have the firepower on offense in
order to make a comeback. I think there was five
minutes to go, and I decided to turn it off.
And I happened to look at the score a couple
of minutes later when it was over, and I saw
forty two to.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Sixteen, and I went, what happened? You know?
Speaker 1 (17:12):
I turned it off at twenty eight sixteen with five
minutes to go, and I told my I go, you know,
that's scoring it up forty two to sixteen, and she's
like what She's like, that was a close game. So USF,
you know, look, they just didn't have the depth to
match up against Alabama and never expected him to win.
But after going into it as a one point game
in the fourth quarter, I felt like, you know, they let.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
They really let Alabama off the hook.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
And nobody's really talking about this game because most people
just watched the box score. But USF played a really
good football game. They've got Miami in two weeks. They're
gonna have another chance at a top team. When they
play Miami. In fact, they're hosting Miami, so it'll be interesting.
I still think USF has a chance to go to
the playoff, but they got to beat Miami. If they
(18:02):
don't beat Miami, then those chances are over with. But
you know, I do think they could be one of
the group of five teams. I think the favorite right
now Boise State, especially the way that they played Oregon,
and I think Boise State should win the Mountain West again.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Ashton Genty.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
If I had to give a Heisman Trophy out today,
it would be going to Ashton Genty. You know, we
were talking about Heisman performance. As I said, Quinn yours
Ashton Genty number two on my list. I mentioned it earlier.
He had one hundred and ninety two yards and three touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
This is this is a musty guy in college football.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
If you're bored, there's nothing going on, you're a loan
on a Saturday, and you see a Boise State game.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
It's check it out for a minute.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
I think you should Nebraska their defense, Heisman performance, holding
Colorado to just ten points and Deon Sanders just continues
to take the money from Colorado. But you know, it
was a good business move because Colorado sold out of
Tennesseeason tickets. People are into it, but continue to bet
against Colorado. They can't cover. They are not a good
football team. They are a me me me team. They're
(19:00):
not They are all about themselves. I don't know what
Travis Hunter was thinking attaching himself to Deon Sanders. Could
have gone and the kid could have gone anywhere. You know,
it's a one time Florida State recruit could have stayed there.
Imagine him last year on the team with the knowles.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
How much better they they were already good, right, Imagine
how much better they would have been what Travis Hunter.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
Deon Sanders isn't recruiting. They don't have any talent on defense.
The offensive line isn't very good. You know, I don't
know what's gonna happen to Dion and his coaching career
once his sons move on to the pro and and
Travis Hunter isn't there, which is gonna happen this year?
Speaker 2 (19:35):
You know, he's one of the most overrated coaches. Deon Sanders.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
I don't like what he's doing, and you know, I
feel like you're not allowed to criticize Deon Sanders sometimes
you're like a bad person if you do.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
But let's just call it what it is. The guy
doesn't recruit.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
There's there's absolutely nobody on that defense that is a
star outside of Travis Hunter. They cannot make stops and
they made Nebraska look really good. Now, don't get me wrong,
I think Nebraska is a good football team. Dylan Royola
is a hell of a quarterback, five star recruit coming
in there. Was once committed to Kirby Smart and Georgia.
Now in Nebraska as a starter. He looks good and
(20:17):
in Nebraska's the whole looks good and they're probably gonna
be undefeated when they go take on Ohio State. When
I think it's week eight or week nine, do I
think Nebraska is the playoff team? I don't think they
got a favorable schedule though that helps them out. Speaking
of Dylan Royola, he's probably seen it on social media too,
hold a sorry head to sneeze Nebraska. Maybe out this
(20:43):
quarterback Dylan Royol And you may have seen this on
social media. He's got the same haircut as Patrick Mahomes,
he wears the same number as Patrick Mahomes. He warms
up like Patrick Mahomes, he runs down to the end
zone to fire up the crowd the way Patrick Mahomes does,
it's honestly kind of creepy.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
I don't know what this kid is doing.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Like, he's super talented, and I want to be talking
about his on field stuff in his off field stuff.
It's not that it's distracting. He's not doing anything. He's
not getting arrested, right He's not at Georgia. You know,
if he was at Georgia and then he'd probably have
worst issues. He need probably have a couple of traffic violations.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
But he is called.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
He's starting to cause a little bit of a distraction
because what he is doing and the way he's mimicking Mahomes,
it's really weird.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
I've never seen anything like it.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Now, if you haven't, if you have no idea what
I'm talking about right now, because you're not that deep
into the college world, just google Dylan Rayola, Pat Mahomes.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
It'll pop up for you. You'll see it.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
