entering game four of a six game road trip on
Monday in Philadelphia. And in case you missed it, here's

(01:17):
how it unfolded. But the Flyers bring this one back
out with the games till nothing nothing and a giveaway.
Now right side a shot, say May blinds a cord
off the bed by Travis connecting Vaneers takes it back
and our rims around of the right force for Catton,
ont of the line for Flurry.

came off the point shot from Kale Flurry and set
up by Berkeley, Catton and the cracket.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
That's well one nothing lead.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
Yeah, great work by Catton picking up puck off the wall.
They're getting it back to Kale Flurry at the point.
Who got a shot on it? It was about hip
Hi Everley gets a piece of it. Won nothing Cracking
and Berkeley Catton has its first.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Point in the NHL.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Drysdale redline left, will drive it back in behind the
cracking net and the cord. We'll settle it down, gave
it away. Katory A sends one across the receealer and.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Fret they score.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
Gat Away which Cossa Kraken and it was Ohwen tipp
It who finishes the job right in front of Joey
to Cord to a half open cage with ten oh
four remaining in period one and Philadelphia has come back
to tie this game one one.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Lexi Ak retrieves and gives the right back Drysdale up
the right wing tip of a chip and cheese cracking
zones that a ring.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
At tempt connect Dana save is made fine Joey the cord,
Oh that was huge. That keeps it two to one
to Cord coming up with a humongous stock here in
period two, in the open Benier's left side that down
low for every turns one to the net loss in traffic,
Vanier sends one back for Newman.

Speaker 6 (02:56):
He's gons Yanni Newman power play goal cracket eleven twenty
seven to go in the second period, wide open for
the right circle and powers this one right past and
lador the Crack and half cut the deficit down a
two goals.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
It's a four to two game.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
Well, I mentioned getting control and getting it deep in
the offensive, so this time Seattle does that. It gun's
all the way down to Eberley. He steps out and
tries to make a play in front of the net.
Matty Beeer's finds it, digs it out, feeds it over
to Newman for a one timer.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
It's four to two Philadelphia.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Now I'm cider shot by tip it to Flextion in
I score.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
A seeing eyes shot from the left side that somehow
lake through Joey Decord with four minutes and twenty seconds
left here and what's been a tough second period for
the Kraken to absorb in Philadelphia extends a lead.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Back to three.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
It's five to two.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Well in the game, this showed plenty of promise for
the get Go and unfolded the wrong way for the
Krack and in period two as low percentage plays and
low percentage shots victimized them in a five to two
loss to Philadelphia. A short night for Joey to Cord,
ending after period two giving up five goals on twenty
one shots, Philip Grubauer relieving him, turning in six saves

(04:19):
on six shots, which now leads to the question who
starts this evening in Washington between perhaps Philip Grubauer and
Matt Murray with Joey to Cord going the ninth before
We'll wait and see as a crack and try to
bounce back now for the first time after a regulation
loss under new head coach Lane Lambert, but also coming
off a promising debut for one of their prize youngsters

(04:40):
in Berkeley Catton, who picked up his first career NHL
point in just his second shift in the NHL. Here's
a reaction from Berkeley Catton after the game in Philadelphia.

Speaker 7 (04:51):
How do you feel you did in that?

Speaker 8 (04:53):
We were Yeah, I think I think I had my
moments for sure, and I think we had a good
first there. I don't know, a little off a little
bit there, but uh, you know, it's it's fast, it's heavy.
So learned a lot that game, and you know, just
gonna continue to try and build.

Speaker 7 (05:08):
What was it like just trying to get yourself come
and and then what was the whole experience.

Speaker 8 (05:13):
Like, Yeah, Yeah, it's it's a lot for sure. It's
kind of nice honestly, just to get that even the
lap out of the way and just everyone kind of
forgets about it. I just go play. So you know,
it was a really exciting night and you know, happy
in my families year got to share with them, so
really special night.

Speaker 7 (05:28):
And then you get the secondary as system on the
first goal. I mean, did did register with you right
away that you had a point?

Speaker 8 (05:34):
Did you figure out?

Speaker 7 (05:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:35):
I did at all?

Speaker 8 (05:36):
That was you know, that's I think my first touch
of the game wasn't the sists, so that was pretty cool.
But yeah, I think it did end up going off
abs right, So, you know, secondary assist and the second
shift is pretty cool.

Speaker 7 (05:49):
And so as the game went along, I mean, what
were you feeling out there as far as just the
cohesion and the ability to make plays?

Speaker 3 (05:56):
What it would it? What it looked like the game
kind of slowed down. H Yeah.

Speaker 8 (06:01):
Uh, you know, I think they're a really good defensive
team too. And there wasn't a whole lot the whole game,
but you know, maybe the odd chance here and there,
and you know, obviously playing with with Maddie and Ebbs,
it was they create lots and I just kind of
have to get to the right spot sometimes and they
make the play so really special and you know.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Cool night, So good for the Cracking to get catt
and on the board, but they're still trying to pick
up the pieces in the game where they were outshot
twenty seven to twenty two and giving up two goals
to Owen Tippet in the process, Philadelphia scoring four unanswered
on their side. Before we get to John Walton, here's
the reaction from Cracken head coach Lane Lambert.

Speaker 9 (06:37):
Not sharp, We were not sharp. You're not wrong. Wasn't
wasn't our best effort, that's for sure, and we have
to be better.

Speaker 7 (06:47):
How much does missing, you know, so many guys from
the lineup, how much does that start to impact kind
of the.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Systems play well?

Speaker 9 (06:55):
I mean, as you go along here, you know you've
got you've got guys out, you know, but it's it,
that is what it is. So you know, we those
guys being out didn't didn't stop us from you know,
winning battles or winning face offs. We just didn't do it.

(07:16):
So really there's no excuse we weren't good enough.

Speaker 7 (07:21):
Were the penalties are concerned to.

Speaker 8 (07:23):
You at all?

Speaker 9 (07:24):
Where the penalties are concerned. No, you know, you know
we we need we need some kills. You know, we
had a couple of short hand of chances. We had
a breakaway to make it two one. We had a
two on one as well, and you know we didn't
capitalize on those and they came back and scored. So

(07:44):
you know, they didn't get much, to be honest with you,
on their power play, but they capitalized on it.

Speaker 7 (07:51):
Berkeley cat and making his debut, did what did you
end up seeing out of him?

Speaker 9 (07:55):
You thought it made a really good play on the
first goal. It was nice for him to get you know,
did first NHL point and you know we made a
really good playoff face off to hitting the scene. You know,
it's like you say, it's his first game, get his
feet wet. I'm sure it was a learning experience for him.

Speaker 10 (08:15):
What needs to be clean up for Washington tomorrow.

Speaker 9 (08:17):
Our battle level, we we just can't lose the battles.
We lost just too many of them. We played slower
today for whatever reason. You know, we have to get
more consistent in our thought process that way. But we've
got to be faster and we've got to be more
committed to winning battles and and I just didn't think

(08:38):
I just didn't think we won enough battles. Were we trying? Sure,
but there's a difference between trying and winning them. You know,
the lost battles end up in penalties against, turnovers, chances against.
So we have to be a lot better. In your experience,
does it Is it a good thing that you have
a game to come back tomorrow night that you know,
the guys have to flourishes and know to have better

(09:00):
at have time to sit and think about it or
worry about it.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Think he's got to get out and be better.

Speaker 9 (09:04):
Yeah, I mean, it's regardless of whether it's tomorrow night
or the next night. You know, I think that certainly
it's an opportunity for us to rebound and be better.

Speaker 10 (09:17):
Ryan land Green has left the last two games a
little bit beat up.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
How valuable is the role.

Speaker 9 (09:21):
That he plays for this team? Yeah, no, he's you know,
I mean the last game he left is because he
blocked a critical shot at a critical time that you know,
flew up into his face tonight. He was sticking up
for his teammate. He's a warrior and he's a great.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Teammate joining us now are a team friend, John Walton,
veteran play by play announcer on the Capitol's radio network,
also his flagship station one O six seventh the Fan
w JFK. John, Great to have you. And now that
Alex Olvechkin has to pass Wayne Gretzky's all time goal
scoring record, what's consuming everyone's mind now round this team

(10:00):
for this season?

Speaker 3 (10:02):
Nothing? We're just going home.

Speaker 11 (10:03):
That's it. I you know, it's wild. I mean we
had a you know, with where we were as far
as the.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Last season.

Speaker 11 (10:14):
I mean we got to about March and there was
a time, I mean going back to the beginning, guys,
where we had in November, We're in Salt Lake and
Alex has two goals third period, Caps are winning handily.
Everything's good, and then Alex breaks his leg and we
stayed over in Salt Lake and it was just we
went out after the game and get something to eat

(10:36):
and we're just sitting there looking at each other like
we don't know how to do this, Like we never
seen this, None of us have ever seen this for
a long term. At that point, we didn't really know
what the injury was and watching him come back and
do what he did, only out for six weeks, come
back at the record and mold it down at the end,
like he did not leave any room for maybe this
happens this year or maybe it doesn't. A couple of

(10:58):
goals against Chicago and could at four, and then getting
it against the Islanders in the way he did tacked
on a couple for good measure to get eight ninety
seven at the end. There was definitely an emotional lift
that surrounded this team that you know. It's funny because
sometimes you'll get asked the questions, oh, is it a distraction?

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Well, no, it's not.

Speaker 11 (11:15):
I mean it's actually the opposite of that. But to
that end, now that you're here, what do you do
for an encore when you don't have this unbelievable historic
achievement That was kind of this symbiotic relationship between the
Caps going to one hundred and eleven points and Alex
getting the record. And I think we've seen at least
early on that you know, this team is still as advertised,

(11:38):
they're running it back with twenty of the twenty three
guys that were here last year.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
I don't feel and.

Speaker 11 (11:42):
I'm saying this more as a representative of what I've
heard in the room from Logan Thompson has been vocal
and Spencer Carberry has mentioned it. You know that a
lot of people think, oh, well, you know, the CAP's
over achieved. They're really not that interesting anymore. You know,
if you don't have the record, what's going on. This
team is still good. I ultimately think they've got to
find a way to get through Carolina. They did not

(12:04):
do that in the second round last year. They will
ultimately if they want to put together a deep run,
they got to get by Carolina because it's the way
the playoffs are set up. So there are still a
work in progress. But they are strong.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
One to twelve up front, one to six on d
and one and two in the net.

Speaker 11 (12:19):
There are no holes here. This is one of the
best defensive teams in the NHL. They don't give up
much at five on five. They're tough to beat, and
they have come out of the blocks not scoring a ton,
but they are scoring enough and you know, been all
right on the road. They've got this cushion of home
games involving the crack in this week where you know,

(12:39):
in the middle of five or six at home and
then things start to get a little more serious. But
they're you know, they're holding their own and I think
everybody believes in this room that they are not only
a playoff team, but a team that has a deep
run in them. But they still have to get to
I think that next level in order to do that.

Speaker 10 (13:00):
Yeah, I want to go back to ov for a second.
Take us back to that run. I mean, the city,
the fan base for you personally. I mean I can
only imagine in Seattle you go back to the home
run race of what was that ninety eight Maguire and
Sosa and I think Griffy was in it for for
a while. But just give folks in Seattle an idea

(13:24):
of just what that was like.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
And then for you.

Speaker 10 (13:27):
Personally to have that moment on your reel, on on
your resume of now being able to to tell your grandkids,
to have your kids tell their grandkids. Man, you know
Grandpa John was there when What was that like for
all parties involved?

Speaker 11 (13:46):
Yeah, put Grandpa to bed and change his nipe for it. Yeah,
for sure. I'm older than you guys, so I can
say that you know, it was wild.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
It was just this, It was about March.

Speaker 11 (13:59):
I mean most of my time, this is fifteen seasons
here now, and there really had. There wasn't much of
a time where you know, I was here. You know,
he was in the threes when I got here, so
I didn't get them all, but I've had the majority
of him. And you know, four hundred becomes five hundred,
becomes six hundred, and there's always this talk could he
do it?

Speaker 3 (14:18):
Could he do it?

Speaker 11 (14:20):
And sometimes the answer would be oh yeah, and then
other times it would be oh, absolutely not, And it
just depended on which talking head and what national person
was saying it. And you know, then about the time
he got the seven hundred New Jersey a few years ago,
you're like, listen, like this is one hundred ninety out now,
like this is starting to feel like it could happen.
And the production through the course of these last couple

(14:42):
of years to you know, be approaching fifty goals at
the age he's at where Gretzki in the same timeframe
was getting, you know fifteen, this just doesn't happen. And
he just kept throwing him in the net. And the
way he started last year, it wasn't a matter of
is going to happen, and it's like it felt like
it was going to happen by Christmas, because he was

(15:02):
leading the league there at the time he got hurt,
was right at the top.

Speaker 3 (15:07):
But it's been this all consuming kind of thing.

Speaker 11 (15:10):
It almost feels like, you know when you're anticipating Christmas
or something and you're you're whether it's family or or
president you're hoping for as a kid, and then there's
almost this remorse like, well, well what do we do now?

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Like it's all I've known, like the whole time I've
been here.

Speaker 11 (15:25):
But it was amazing, and I think really from March
we were in California and you could see that he
was starting to heat up, and you really felt like, Okay,
I think it's going to happen.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
There were little lulls here and there, but you know,
when it.

Speaker 11 (15:39):
Really became apparent, you know, he tied the record at home,
and it would have been amazing because he was this
close against Chicago to getting a hat trick and maybe
even four and doing it in front of the home fans.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
It would have been nice.

Speaker 11 (15:51):
Yeah, but you know, ultimately for those who love the
game like we all do, to be just in the building.
Funny enough, I'm Matthew Darish has been a friend for
a long time.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
He was.

Speaker 11 (16:01):
He played in Hershey when I was there, and now.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
Is the gem of the Islanders.

Speaker 11 (16:06):
Funny enough, he was there that day with Tampa Bay. Yeah,
because the entire staff had come out. They were playing
the Rangers, and they all made the trip because hey, listen, like, guys,
we got to go see this. I mean we're here practically.
Uh So all the you know, John Cooper was there
and all, and Julian Breesebaugh and all the Tampa Bay guys,
and he just had this moment and you felt like

(16:27):
it was going to happen, but you know, it's a
day game, and you know, just kind of getting into it,
and then the second period of powerplay comes and I
just remember, like my heart was in my throat. I
was like, this could be it, like right here, Like
I remember watching on ESPN when Gary Thorn and Bill
Clement called it when Gretzky passed Gordy and I was
in college and I never could have imagined.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Being in that moment or being.

Speaker 11 (16:50):
One of the guys that got to call the next one.
And honestly, I don't know if this is ever getting
brought not in my lifetime. I'm never going to see it,
but uh, you know, I just I don't know that
it's going to happen again, but man to be there
and just it was so perfect, Like whether you're you're
Joe b or your me Joe Benanadi r TV guy here,

(17:10):
the only thing you hoped for with all these milestones
that have happened, you know, whether rolling over the odometer
six hundred, seven hundred, eight hundred, it was pleased.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
For the love of God, let it be clean.

Speaker 12 (17:19):
Yeah, no deflections, nothing, it's I mean, six hundred was
put the fear of God in me because we were
playing Winnipeg and Hallibuck was in net and it was
a scramble in front and he goes to it and
there's just that moment it hesitations.

Speaker 11 (17:35):
I'm pretty sure he got it. I think so, and
you're just, oh my god, Devin.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Hundred was was clean, but it was quick.

Speaker 11 (17:42):
It was a third period of a game where the
capture losing in New Jersey. It was a day game,
and it just all of a sudden he hadn't scored
in eight games. Yeah, and all of a sudden it's
there and boom, like everyone has been kind of different.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
Eight ninety five was beautiful.

Speaker 11 (17:54):
It was exactly if you could have drawn it up,
if you could have said, I want a cross ice
from I don't care who it is, winding up Vintage
in the office, no doubt or blow them away.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
It was perfect.

Speaker 11 (18:08):
And when you're on the call and you're just saying,
it's like you see it. If they said, if this
goes in, I'm gonna be okay with that, and it was.
And you know, I was happy with mine. I know
Joe's happy with his, and we're all just like you
just try to give the magnitude of the moment what
it deserves and hope that it resonates. And that's all

(18:28):
we can do, right, I mean, you know, you know
how it is. I mean, it's just for everything that happens.
I mean, you just want to give credence to the
moment and then in my mind, just get out of
the way and just you know, let you know, the
speeches and Gretzky and Ov and the game stops and
all of the wonderfulness it was happening had nothing to
do with us. But being able to watch that, I'll
never forget it.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
It was wonderful.

Speaker 11 (18:48):
My son was there, just to be able to have
that moment happen. It didn't matter where, it didn't matter
who the goalie was, it didn't matter who the other
team was. It was just this great celebration of our
great game, and I'm so glad I got to be
a small part of it.

Speaker 10 (19:02):
A lot of folks in Pittsburgh will tell you that
when the Penguins won all those Cups, they've never done
it on home ice, and a number of fans are like, man,
the Pens couldn't have given me one cup on home ice.
Obviously the record was great. It was a day game
on Long Island. I mean, the moment is already a ten,
But is it like a nine point seven because it

(19:25):
wasn't in DC or.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
It doesn't matter.

Speaker 10 (19:28):
The moment happened and it's now going to be etched
in history.

Speaker 11 (19:32):
I am tremendously fortunate that between when I was in
Hershey and we won three Cups there and then I
got to be part of one here that winning at
home is special. I got to do that once with Hershey,
the other two were on the road, and then we
were in Vegas for this one here. It is there
is something special about and this was exactly the same

(19:54):
because you know, Nick Baxtrom came back, and tj Oshi
came back, and you know, there are all these guys
in the room and Tom Wilson is you know, we
the best. My favorite interview with Tommy ever and I've
had a bunch of them. Yeah, just you know, so appreciative,
Like and he and Dylan Strom. You couldn't have picked
two guys that would love to who can appreciate the moment.
Willie who's been here for you, Willie's going to be
a captain here when over retires, and being able to

(20:17):
kind of almost felt like a bit of a torch passing.
And Dylan Strom, who's you know, a stats guy and
loves the game so much.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
I mean they appreciated it.

Speaker 11 (20:25):
Having that moment on the road is okay because selfishly,
you know, you're you're on that bus together going to
the plane and like, I mean, if you're gonna win
a cup and you're not going to do it at
home friends, by the way, do it in Vegas.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Yes, that that wasn't terrible.

Speaker 11 (20:43):
But to have that moment with your teammates and your
your workmates, uh and your you know, our pr staff
and our our broadcast staff and all of that.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
There is something special to it.

Speaker 11 (20:55):
To your point, though, could it would it have been
great to do it at home for the Cup? Yes,
would have been great do at home. Yes, But there's
actually I think two such to it. I would have
loved to have seen him do it at home because
I think they would have burned the building down. It
would have been unbelievable. But it would also you know,
it is nice from a selfish perspective. It's just this
moment that felt, hey, like this happened and we were

(21:17):
all here for it, and it's just this very almost
an intimate level of hey, we got to do this
really cool thing and it was just the fifty five
sixty people that were on the plane.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
Both are good. I was just glad that you got
to be a part of it.

Speaker 2 (21:32):
All right, big thank you too, John Walton for joining
us more than that conversation. By the way, you can
hear that on crack and Weekly, already uploaded via the
crank and Audio Network and the iHeartRadio app. Begin to
hear it on demand. Sign up for free to get
it at sports radiokjar dot com if you have not
done so. That sets up the first of two matchups
here between the Crack and Capitals for this season. Tonight

(21:56):
they're only visit for the Craken into the nation's capital
and they'll face Alex Ovechkin as a new all time
leading goal scorer in NHL.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
History, he is two goals away.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
From nine hundred in his NHL career the Krack and
also getting a new Ford. Earlier this morning, they called
up Ben Myers from AHL Coachella Valley a one for

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist
