Speaker 2 (00:47):
Welcome to Cracking this morning, a presentation of the Kraken
Audio Network Ken Sports Radio ninety three point three kjr FM.
Here's Mike Benton. There may be no challenge as big
as this one.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Tonight, the Crake in for the first time this season
take on the Colorado Avalanche, who hold the best record
in the NHL heading into Tuesday, December sixteenth, Cracking Avalanche
Tonight seven o'clock punt drop lit them further past that
to be specific because of National TV, they've got coverage
and we're only local broadcast source for action this sevening

(01:21):
opening up at six point thirty for the pregame shows
served up by Frostbrewed, cors Light, Shoose, Chill on ninety
three to three KJRFM, and the Global Credit Union Kraken
Audio Network. Postgame, once again, we're live across the street
back at Tom's watch Bar. I'll be joined by Anders Hirst,
who we'll be on the scene in the dressing room

(01:42):
following the game, plus also jumping on board with us
for talking Kraken heading up to an hour after the
final horn once again for your reaction. As always, you
can text us at four nine four five one. Coming up,
we'll hear from Cracking head coach Lane Lambert with a
Cracking getting back to practice after a three to one
lost to Buffalo Sunday. We'll learn more about a couple

(02:03):
of key players missing from practice as well, plus also
get the insights from Crack and defenseman Brandon Montor. Revolving
around five on five, play the man advantage and defending
Nathan McKinnon what it takes against the other superstars of
the NHL. As we go into the dressing room after
practice with Krack and defenseman Brandon montour final game before

(02:26):
the holiday break as far as the home part of
the schedule, with the Kraken looking for a swift turnaround
after dropping a three to one loss to the Buffalo
Savers and trying to get out of the slide which
has just one win in the previous nine games. Chandler
Stevenson scored a second period power play goal, but also
part of the attention on rookie Jacob Alansa called up

(02:47):
from AHL Coachella Valley, and he certainly brought a fierce
and abrasive presence with seven hits on the entire evening,
including four a loan in his first two shifts back
in period one. You could look at players out of
the lineup like Jared mccannon and Jayden Schwartz. You could
look at the natural causes here of the current condition

(03:08):
with illness flowing through the entire team, But no matter
how you slice it, the Kraken are still struggling to
score goals. And trying to find the smoother path, which
right now has them at two point four goals per
game on the offensive side. The Kraken, though, getting right
back to work on Monday at Kraken Community ice Plex,
forward Mason Marchman making a return back to the ice,

(03:30):
while defenseman Ben's Done and forward Coppocaco were noticeably absent
from the pack. After practice at Coach Lane, Lambert spoke
more beginning on how the late morning session could potentially
push the Kraken in the right direction.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
I thought we I thought we had good energy today.
You know, we need to get into a slump. I
guess you could call it or whatever you want to
call it. You know, the concern is guys, you know
they're not getting rewarded for certain things that they've been doing,
and you know at times you can get discouraged. I
thought our guys, I thought we were fine today. You know,

(04:05):
the atmosphere was pretty good. Atmosphere is positive, you know,
and I thought practice was good.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
How much are you finding in the mess assassins change,
if at all, when you see guys are struggling mentally
or you're trying to find when it can keep things,
I can even keeping.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah. Well, you you know, that's that's the challenges. You know,
you can never get too high and a high or
too low and low and it's even keel and you
know that's the challenge of having them understand that. But certainly,
you know we have to know that. And the only
way we're going to you know, get back to our

(04:40):
winning ways is to you know, stay positive and be
in a good mind frame.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
Coppo and Events are.

Speaker 5 (04:46):
Both missing to anything to read into there any concern
for their status.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
For tomorrow illness, and I would expect them to be
fine tomorrow, but you know, with what's going on, we
never know who who next?

Speaker 5 (05:02):
Should we all leave. One thing I'd wanted to ask
you about coach is Chandler Stevenson. With the publicly available
analytic models on him, it never shows very kindly. What
doesn't show up in those models That kind of makes
you rely on him.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
As much to do face offs plays against the other
team's best players every night. You know, always gets the
toughest matchups. So you know, it's easy to sit back
and look at the analytics and you know you would
like them to be a little better. Sure, you know,

(05:40):
if we played him down on the third line, he'd
have great analytics probably, So you got to keep it
in perspective here. This guy plays a ton of minutes
for us. He does a ton of things for us,
and they're hard minutes.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
Is there anything I guess about the way that he
plays that you especially like for him?

Speaker 3 (06:01):
While he's smart, he's extremely intelligent, and when you're playing
against other team's top players, you have to have a
level of intelligence it is, you know, on par or
better than them in order to stop them. So that's
one of his biggest attributes, you know. And I thought
he played very well last night. I thought it was
one of his best games. I thought he was skating.

(06:22):
I think, you know, for me, that's the one thing
with Chandler is you know, we need to get him
skating like that every night.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
Is a Matt Murray at the point now where he's.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Kind of back in the rotation.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
No, he's not quite there yet, but he certainly is practicing.

Speaker 6 (06:39):
And when he when he gets to that point, do
you anticipate that rotation their frequency kind of changing it
all from from when we're healthy.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
I'll worry about that when it happens. Thank you.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Laney mentioned Shane last night, you know, a nice time
and yeah, period in might and you kind of like
where it's saying he's going. I want to have to
get him at a little bit more so what's working
for him recently.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
From and you want to see more out of his
compete level. Yeah, it's higher right now than it was earlier,
you know, which stems from confidence, which is what we've
talked about with him all the time. He's a good
hockey player who can own pucks, hold on to pucks,
and you know, win battles to get pucks back. And

(07:21):
I think he's doing a better job of that. He
certainly did last night.

Speaker 5 (07:26):
While his minutes were kind of going up towards the
Andani Newman didn't play too much at the end. Is
that at all related to him turning a puck over?
Or is that just you trying to.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
No, No, it's it's director. They excuse me, sorry about that. Hello,
it's directly related to that. You know, there's certain areas
of the game that you know, our young players, as
we continue to develop them, have to understand that are
extremely important. And you know, if if we're developed players here,

(08:00):
which we are, there will be certain growing pains in
that area, And you know, I thought wall play and
some turnovers last night weren't his friend. That doesn't mean that,
you know, he's not playing tomorrow. It doesn't mean that
he'll be sitting on the bench tomorrow. It just means
that last night it wasn't going well enough for him

(08:22):
at that particular moment.

Speaker 6 (08:24):
Well, it feels as if the breakaways against have gone
up noticeably or he's visibly the last week or two.
I mean, can you attribute that maybe a quest for
more offense you're seeing guys not covering with the consper
and bench again work.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Well, that's a good question. I think at times, potentially,
you know, I think we've we've been sort of pressing
a little bit to create more offense. You know, I
don't know if you're speaking in particular about their first
goal last night being a two on one, or if

(09:02):
you're talking about the breakaway we gave up off a faceoff.
Certainly we have to be more diligent and more responsible
in those areas, because those are just those are just breakdowns,
and those have nothing to do with trying to create
more offense.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Leadership certainly comes in many forms and for cracking events
been Brandon Montor is not just in production, but also
in a vocal presence throughout the entire dressing room. He
currently also is logging a ton of minutes right now. That,
of course, to no one's surprise, his average time on
ice so twenty two minutes and nineteen seconds per game,
second on the entire team, trailing Vince Done at twenty

(09:38):
two minutes and forty seven seconds. Montor also carrying sixteen
points in twenty six games right now, along with six goals.
That's right now on pace to match his career high
of eighteen goals set last season, and had potentially forty
eight points, which would top last year's mark of forty
one he set in his first season in Seattle. We

(09:59):
cut up with Random on tour back of the Crack
and dressing room after practice Monday, following a game where
energy was certainly a big topic on Sunday.

Speaker 7 (10:08):
Yeah, I mean, I think you again, it's it's you know,
going the wrong way right now, it's you know, things
that we don't like.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
We're obviously losing games. I just think in the nature.

Speaker 7 (10:18):
Of just for forgetting about the past and working kind
of towards you know, what we've done well and try
to get that as quch as you can.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
When you when you're a team trying to figure out
the smooth pat back offensively, how do you figure the
small stuff when it comes to you know, screens, rebounds,
other things that are making the biggest key and the
biggest difference as far as offense.

Speaker 7 (10:37):
Yeah, I mean, I think we're a team that's not
gonna you know, score those you know, individual like nice
nice goals.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
I think we.

Speaker 7 (10:44):
Obviously struggled to score goals, so we got to get
in those dirty areas. We're not doing that nearly enough.
And I think obviously this this season we haven't scored enough,
which you know, you need that to score, you know,
you need to to win the games, and we struggle
in that category. But I think that you know, we
got pot players in this you know locker room that
can score goals, can shoot the puck, and we just
got to find way used to you know, be more desperate,

(11:06):
you know, neft front, like you said, getting screens, getting
dirty goals. I think, you know, we might have a
lot of you know, i's talking to some of the coaches,
B and C chances, but we don't have a lot
of a chances and when you obviously need to get.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
More of those, the power play, getting a goal the
other night. It seems like matters are gradually turning a
corner here for the units. What's working more when it
comes to shop volume.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
Just being aggressive?

Speaker 7 (11:29):
I think you know again, you know what, it doesn't
go the right way or slow, not necessarily processing it
and trying to make the right play, the cute plays
sometimes you know, shoo, shooting more. Mentality is better and.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
Yeah, that's that's that's what I should say about.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
That practice on Monday. How'd you feel about it? And
what's getting this team geared from the right direction again?

Speaker 7 (11:54):
Try to again forget about you know, obviously you got
to work towards what we've been you know, lacking, But
you gotta keep the mentality of just kind of another game.
We got another tough opponent. It's not supposed to be easy.
So you guys should be excited about tonight.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
What's the biggest key with hand when the schedule right now,
being that you're playing so many games and just so
little time before the holiday break.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Yeah, recover.

Speaker 7 (12:15):
You know, obviously, when you have bumps and bruises, you
gotta you know, maintain them. But again, just stay mentally physically,
you know, within the game, and you know, be ready
to go, just because there's so many games, like you said,
and you gotta be ready.

Speaker 1 (12:29):
The team coming up on the other side of the
ice is quite the challenge in Colorado. It seems like
as a lot going for him. But you know it's
not the first time that you know, you and these
other guys have faced a team rolling like they are.
So what's the difference in how you defend first off,
a guy like Nathan McKinnon versus other superstars in this league.

Speaker 7 (12:46):
Yeah, you gotta maintain a speed. Obviously, he's gonna create chances.
He's gonna get his chances, but you gotta limit them
as best you can. Get in his face, play him hard,
get your stick in his lane. Uh, you know, but
like like a guy that got you gotta maintain stay
out of the box. Obviously they're really huge there. But
they're a heck of a team out there, and you know,
I think for our team, our jobs play smart, be

(13:06):
in their face, play with speed, and make a challenging
for their top guys.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
And if we do that, I think it should be
a really good game.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Finally, at this point of the season.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
What have you appreciated about the value of leadership in
this room and especially others underhead coach Lane Lambert ere
in this first year.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Yeah, lanez mcgod he's a communicator.

Speaker 7 (13:22):
He's not obviously happy where we're with that and he's
not going to accept that. So I think that's you know,
good for us to have, you know, a guy that
you know, we can lead, lean on, lead us, you know,
to getting us in.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
The right direction.

Speaker 7 (13:35):
And again he's positive, but you know, when we need
to you know, kicking the uh, kicking the button, he's
he's there to kind of be ready for us, and.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
Obviously it's nice to have him on our side.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Appreciate this.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
Brandon, Thank you, Yeah, thank you.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
Always appreciate the insights from Brandon on tour back at
the Crack and dressing room again so far with sixteen points,
saying six goals in twenty six games, but also importantly
and embodied the cracking pledge for more shot volume. Right
now leads the Kraken with one hundred and fifty nine
shot attempts here for the season. He is also a
third right now in shantan goal with sixty seven, So

(14:12):
we'll see where the Kracking go with their lineup here
for today is they are still managing illness going throughout
the dressing room, but they're taking on a Colorado Avalanche
team that can be challenging no matter what time of
the year, no matter what condition, and this year up
to a tour and start leading the NHL with fifty
three points at a twenty three to two and seven clip,

(14:34):
they are ten two and five away from ball Arena.
Chandler Stevenson could certainly play a big role in this one,
potentially a matchup against Nathan McKinnon a lot to do
with that, but he's writing a five game points scoring
streak also right now up to seventeen points that right
now tied for third on the Kraken. He could be
pretty busy as far as his matchup with Nathan McKinnon,

(14:58):
who comes in with a five game points scoring streak
nine points in total and to no surprise very much
in the early conversation for the Heart Trophy with fifty
five points in thirty two games, also leading the NHL
with twenty six goals. The Krack and aiming for their
first win over Colorado since November ninth of twenty twenty

(15:19):
three and trying to eradicate a four game losing skid
head to head. We have all the action coming your way,
starting with six thirty airtime for your pregame show served
up by Frostbrewed cors Light Choose Chill, Face Off, Little
Past at seven pm mark. But we got you covered
all the way because National TV's got covered Cheer for
the night, So we are your only local source for

(15:40):
broadcast coverage on ninety three to three KJRFM and the
Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network. Big thank you to
Brandon Montor for joining us one on one and for
kracking this morning. I'm Mike Benton. Happy holidays and have
a happy Tuesday.
