Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Cracking this Morning, a presentation of the Cracking
Audio network. Ken Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ
R FM. Here's nice about me from the first of
back to back.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Once again, Mike Betting with you for Cranking this morning
on a Monday, January fifth, Well, last time the Cracking
played back on Friday. Let's this slip. The highlights here
tell the story as far as how crazy and topsy
turvy this game got and ended in Vancouver.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Vancouver.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
Back to the line, right, you're it just holds it
in and gives it away O'Connor. Two on oh shorthanded O'Connor,
sure what, Back to O'Connor, he missed it. Two on
oh shorthanded Canucks whift. Here come the Cracking back in
Burt the captain, turns it back over and Drew O'Connor
wants more, sends it up the left side and.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
We'll give Chase. Oh, it's a good BacT check by
Shane right to break up that. Two on oh for.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Vancouver Seattle back to center from the red line. Three
on two in and for mccam every high slot bar circle.
Stevenson scores Chandler Stevenson a power play goal eleven oh
seven to go on the second cracking make a whole
(01:15):
lot of something out.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Of seemingly nothing. It's a two to nothing lead while
power play goal for Seattle. It starts back at the
cracking end of the ice. Obviously they get to lucky
on that two on Ozero in Vancouver to get going
the other way, McCann coming across the blue line makes
a nice drop pass to every Every waits for Chandler
Stevenson to get open on his off wing to the
left of Dempko, puts it on his stick, one timer,
(01:39):
two nothing, cracking.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Winterton with one eight to play the period back in front,
tap dog all this scar Ben Meers station right out
in front. Ryan Winterton threads the beetle and the Seattle
cracking back up by a pair.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Three to one.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Wait in the second right and winter did down the
right side. He's a right handed shot finds Ben Myers
going hard in that perfect timing on Myers to be
right on top of the blue paint as Winterton sent
the puck there in a just a redirect in past Demco.
That two goal leads back intact free one cord ross
right side puts all the brakes against done, pup top
(02:19):
gonick shot bought.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Off by the car right down, slip my hole and
the storm. Lenis Carlson signs a two year extension earlier
today gets his tenth of the season tonight, we're time
for three down that even theirs two goals last night,
(02:44):
snapping a nine game goals rout that game on his
stick left handed shot with the signal, picks up the puck,
booze raining down, Ben ears left circle four hand in
the back hand to the slot on what a move
starves bang bang, not even airs?
Speaker 3 (03:06):
When's it in the shutout? Bob Matty Veneer's with a
huge move down that left side. He gets Demko to
fight hard to his left and he comes back to
his right and puts that one home crack and win
the shootout.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Beauty ever refits you al Konski on the call as
the crack and knocked off the Canucks four to three
in a shootout, and they have moved their run to
six zero and one in the last seven games and
looking to now make it three and o to begin
the calendar year of twenty twenty six. Right now nestled
into a playoff spot with two more games to go
until the finish line of the halfway point. We should
(03:43):
stay here for this regular season and the Crack and
their record coming in right now stands at eighteen fourteen
and seven point total led forty three. They have a
three point lead right now on the Calgary Flames, who
they host in this second matchup of the regular season
at eighteen nineteen and four with forty points on the campaign.
It's gonna be a big one coming up here for
(04:04):
captain Jordan Eberley due to play in career game number
one thousand and one hundred against the Flames. Also in
a tower he makes his home in the off season
while the Crack and also it looks like they're getting
healthier on the front end and also in net a
promising sign for them as they enter matchup two of
(04:25):
this regular season. All right, on the road, we go
Everroscott TV here for tonight. So I'll be in the
booth here with this guy al Koniski joining us. Now,
you guys settle in here with the hotel and the
gym and everything else is as usual.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah, it gets a little familiar after a while because
we often come back at the same hotels. Just remember
what floor of the gym is on, and where the
restaurant is.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
What's the most ideal workout for you? Because I think
for me, if I'm on the road, if they got
to if they have a good solid rack of weights,
I'm in heaven.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Yeah. I like I said, of free weights, ideally dumbbells
and some barwells that and if they've got a peloton,
I'm in heaven.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
I can't outration the all the time, I know that
for sure. Two days off before getting here to this
back to back and we're not going to see this
kind of stretch again for literally another month right before
the Olympic break. So it's pretty much it feels like
all hands on deck here with the schedule rolling now
seventeen games this month and now nineteen and thirty five
(05:20):
before the Olympic break, it really kind of feels like that,
you know, injuries and bodies are healing now at the
right time.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Now, Yeah, I think that's just it, Mike, Like you've
been looking forward to this month, not necessarily because of
the schedule, but because of the guys that have been
on the shelf, and you know that includes Montour and
Jayden Short specifically. You know, Murray is still coming back
from his injury, but it looks like, you know, if
all things hold for this the majority of this month
of January, we should have most of the team healthy.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I will get to Jaden Schwartz and Matt Murray in
a bit because practice told us something pretty revealing the
other day before the team got on the plane. And
I think it has really a lot to do with
how much this roster can hold up with the schedule
crunch that is coming their way. But I want to
get back here to the Vancouver win to end back
to back, and I think in a year where you
(06:11):
have to really maximize the lineup that you have, with
the injury bug going all across the entire league, the
schedule crunch going all across the entire league, it feels crazy.
But again, this feels like kind of like a year
of survival, and the Kraken are passing every test so
far and checking off nearly every box so far to
pass this test. Vancouver at times played better in spurts.
(06:34):
To me, the third period, you felt that charge was
certainly coming. Jordan Nevery told you and Everett as well
between periods of play, and I thought that overtime goal
that was wiped out for interference that could have been
incredibly deflating, and then you're just waiting for the other
shoe to drop. And then you get to Liam Ogrin
as well in the third round of the shootout and
(06:56):
the Krack can survive it. Joey Decord survived it. He
was on and Maddy Beniers drops an absolute highlight jaw
dropper at the end of the third round. It was
the right place at the right time. I think that
got this done. It get you two points and that
wasn't up to us to stay in that win, and
that's what it will take here to get plenty of
(07:16):
wins this year.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Yeah, a couple things about that game, Mike. You know,
it's specifically kel Fler again his first as a Crack
and that was huge. Also, the first goal of the game,
the eighth time in a row, also awesome. Love to
see that Channel sevens with a power play goal again,
you're looking for more from the power play. They end
up one for two in that game. And then, of
course the fourth line. We can't talk about things not
(07:37):
much until we talk about the fourth line. Ben Myer's
getting that third goal of the game, but assists go
to the other two members of that line. They've been
playing fantastically lately. But big picture, it feels like the
Kraken have slid back into where they started this season,
which was the best start in franchise history, and they've
continued it, continued it from the three games before the
Christmas break now into January.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
A sign and that told me things are going well
is when you go through a period like in the
second period where you give up a two one to
zero and give credit, Shane right delivered an absolute monster
bad check, but then you come right back down and
bury one. But how many times have we seen teams
like this maybe fall and come up on the wrong
(08:21):
side of this, And yet it's the krack and who
were basically forcing the play, but yet to a positive
degree where they find opportunity and they strike. And at
that point that goal felt like a bad breaker.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Yeah, I absolutely did, And you know, I give a
lot of credit to the guys. You know, giving up
two power play goals in the second period is as
good as that Vancouver win was. The second period continues
to be a little sloppy and area of an opportunity,
and you know, two power play goals for Vancouver in
that period is probably the highlight or the asterisks on
that sloppiness. Secondly, and you know I mentioned Fleuria, mentioned
(08:55):
the power play goal by Stevenson, and obviously the fourth
line goal by Myers. I got a top off with
that shootout, that Matty Beanir's goal, Like he talked about,
he was working on it in practice. This team knows
they need to get better in the shootout, The goaltenders
know they need to do better in the shootout, and
for them to get to that spot where Vancouver had
exhausted their three shooters zero for three, Seattle had exhausted
(09:18):
their first two to zero for two, and here comes
Matty Beanier's with a highlight reel move to win it.
Just a fantastic win.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
We have seen Matty Beaneirs ascend in a game, re
scored a pair of goals and then does this which
tells you again and I said this going back a year,
two years, three years, the more that you see Matt
Ebaneers at the forefront of this team leadership wise, making
impact plays wise, this is where this team is going
(09:46):
to go. And we saw a direct result of that
once again against Nashville and then the top it off. Yes,
I know in the shootout those goals don't count, but
it ultimately won the game where you had to find
someone come through in the clutch. It's kind of like
what Lane Lambert said when you're standing over a three
foot putt trying to win the golf tournament. Maddy Beniers
had the chill factor in him, he had the dog
factor in him to finish off that shootout. Heading into
(10:10):
this game against Calgary meant a practice day before the
team got on the plane and seeing Jayden Schwartz out
there was again an incredibly relieving sign to see him
upgraded out of the non contact jersey and now into
a regular jersey, and Lean Lambert wouldn't commit after practice
to see if he was going to play or not.
Of course, I think a lot of this is going
(10:31):
to be held close to the fest as always has
been here with him, but yet to see him rotating
possibly in we'll see if he's in or Berkeley Chattons,
maybe out, who knows, because they were rotating him with
Shane Wright and Jared McCann. But what you do is
that you put back in not just leadership all but
also an impeccable net front presence that this team has
(10:55):
found a way to survive without. But when he's due back,
it's an upgrade. But the question is, I think, to you,
how big of an upgrade is it.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Yeah, I think it's huge. I think it's an upgrade
not only on your offense, on your defense. You mentioned
net front presence on the bench in the locker room,
like Jayden, Schwartz ticks all the boxes for me, so
you know, regardless of what you need, he's available to deliver.
And you know, as far as this Calgary game goes,
the last time the crack And lost to Calgary was
December eighteenth. Then they started a three game winning streak
(11:25):
prior to the Christmas break, So that's got to be
in the back of their heads coming to this game
that that was our last time against these guys they
beat us. We have to go out and play a
good game tonight and get a win.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
With Jaden Schwartz. And there's also the Matt Murray factor
because he took a ton of reps at practice, which
I think leads me to believe in a lot of
us here to believe that the time could be very
very soon that he is back in, and maybe it's
at an ideal time not for the performance and goal
because the Crack and had been the best in the league.
You're pretty much the season when you look at teams,
(11:58):
say percentage in Philim Groubauer is playing above about nearly
eighty percent of this league as far as goaltending and
analytics that go with his kind of game. But I
say it for this. They brought in this three goalie
system in this rotation to be able to withstand the
rigors of this schedule, and now it seems like they're
going to need it more than ever here with back
(12:19):
to back again coming up, and then you go through
the Rangers, the Devils, the Bruins next week, and right
before that Minnesota and Carolina as well this week. So
Matt Murray coming back, we'll see if he's slought it
in here for tonight or tomorrow, later this week, who
knows when. But where does this fit impact the Crack
(12:40):
and the most getting him back in?
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Yeah, I think that you know, this three goalie system
is about to pay off in this month of January
with seventeen and thirty one days. But you know, you
look at the play of Philip Rubauer. You look at
the play of Joey Decord right now, Philip Grubauer has
a better save percentage than Joey to Cord now he's
played half as many games. And my rule is that
you're the number one until you lose the number one,
(13:02):
and right now Joey is still the number one goaltender.
But what a great problem to have to have two
goaltenders playing like this, Matt Murray getting healthy, who the
last time we saw him look like he was in
that same area as far as numbers go, it could
be an exciting run here in January, as we see
all three of these goalies play at the top of
their game.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
A big night here due for this evening is the
captain Jordan Eberley, who makes Calgary his home of course
in the offseason. And how appropriate because right back in
these parts he is due to play in career game
one thousand, one hundred in his NHL career al he's
playing I think the finest hockey he's played, maybe in
over a decade right now. I mean, goal scoring wise
(13:42):
is on pacer roughly thirty. He hasn't done that since
twenty eleven, but right now, I think this is a
game where if all if all plans out and all
plays out the right way, you see a team that
can be rallying right around him here for a pretty
important game to solidify their place in the standings and
also keep Calgary at bay because they have been very,
(14:03):
very good on home mise.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Yeah, I agree. I think, you know, Jordan Eberley brings
a different kind of leadership. We talked about a little
bit about Jaden Schwartz and his style. I think that
Jordan Eberley is a quiet leader. He's a lead by
example guy. He's a guy that you know, despite missing
Jaden Schwartz from the lineup in his net front presence,
Jordan Everdy doesn't have an issue getting there either. He
scored a lot of goals from that area. So I
(14:27):
think we talk a lot about how when guys go
out of the lineup for injury, there's opportunity for youngsters
to come in. I think it was an opportunity for
Jordan Everley to say, you know, turn back the clock
a little bit and say I am still a top
line guy, I am still a big contributor, and I
want to help lead this team.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Up against Calgary is second matchup of the season coming up,
and there's one more after this. It will be in Seattle.
The Crack and trying to snap back to back losses
head to head against the Flames and a team that
they're facing that hasn't scored a ton this season. They've
had to rely on Dustin Wolf a lot, but they've
also been driven besides the usual Rasmus Anderson Nosm Kadri
contributions by Michael Backlan and Blake Coleman. And Coleman right
(15:07):
now is your leading goals score on this team. But
it also seems as if whenever you stare down nasm Kadri,
he seems to be a problem here in these matchups. First,
big key for you out of the gate here for
tonight is what I.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
Think, it's stay out of the box for that very
very reason you just mentioned is guys like Kadri can
hurt you when when you're down a man and I
think that, you know, as disciplined as the Cracking can be,
they've got to limit the man up opportunities to you know,
one or two per game. They get into a situation
where they saw six against Vancouver two games ago, it
hurts you. It's tough to have a penalty kill that's
(15:40):
not at the top of its game right now, go
out and kill six penalties, So you want to be
one hundred percent of the penalty kill in this game
against Calgary. Only take one or two penalties. Hecas.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
The more and more that they can stay away from
the box and keep those seats cold. Maybe here in
the chill of Calgary, the better off that they will be.
See what I did there, because right now, Al, it's
cold outside.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Right yeah, it's nine degrees right now.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Yeah, we're looking forward to sun of your days of cracking.
They're trying to again turn up the heat on their
streak here in the cold six zero and one heading
into this matchup, and they are a playoff team looking
to solidify more of their spot here tonight against the
Flames and matchup.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Two of the season.
