All right, without further ado, let's jump into it right now,
Everett and now with us Bella is the light.

Speaker 12 (04:46):
It's over.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
I'm ready.

Speaker 12 (04:48):
Everyone's ready. The question is are you ready?

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah? I'm ready, Oh so ready, me?

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Me and Big al so ready. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
I'm counting the minute. I have been since April, and
it's nice to be back. I think it's great to
have a home opener and a regular scheduled time versus
an afternoon game. It's gonna be a fun couple of
couple of first games here at home.

Speaker 11 (05:13):
It's gonna feel kind of like bizarre, but maybe in
a good way where we're not, you know, to doing
this thing tee and off opening pug drop at one pm.

Speaker 12 (05:21):
In the middle of a week day. It was fun,
but it was a one year type of thing.

Speaker 11 (05:24):
We're doing this back to normal now for seven o'clock
for opening night against the Anaheim Ducks. All right, before
I let both of you jump in, I'm gonna just
start off with this as kind of a generalization of
what we went through over the last several months. And
this all began way back in April, and the team
wasting no time once last season ended to turn the page.

(05:48):
Ron Francis moving further up now to his current role
as President of Hockey Operations, Jason Botterol jumping into the
general manager's chair, and a coaching change now bringing in
Lane Lambert and for a good chuck in this coaching
staff now brand new, there was a pleasure to aggressively
turn over this roster here for the summer. We are

(06:09):
now on the cusp of seeing Berkeley Catton perhaps make
his NHL debut, Fellas, what have you made over the
last six months that lead us up here to game
number one of eighty two and your expectations, Everett start
with you.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Yeah, I mean, listen, Mikey.

Speaker 6 (06:30):
It's it was another, you know, summer of change, which
I don't think is ideal when you're trying to build consistency,
but I mean it also was something that was necessary.
And I think you can you can tell by the
player's performance in the preseason during training camp that a

(06:52):
lot of most of the guys, all the guys have
bought into Lane Lambert and his style and the way
that he wants to play and the way that he
he coaches, and you can you can get a sense
of when he speaks, the guys listen, and I think
that's important also too. I think you know, there's something

(07:12):
to be said about bringing in two new assistant coaches,
and Chris Taylor and Aaron Schneeklous, So now you know
you have all new voices on that bench. Obviously Jess
Campbell is still with the team, but you bring Collins Julianello,
another goaltending coach and to replace Stephen Breere. So you're

(07:34):
you're bringing in an entirely new voice. And it's one
of those things where the ownership of the management group
of the Kraken they want to win and and I
think that this was the group obviously, this is the
group that they felt most comfortable with and they felt
that they get them to that point.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
But you know, now it's.

Speaker 6 (07:54):
Time to to really put up or shut up, right.
I mean, if we're being honest, three coaches in three years,
three coaches in your first five years, if that's not
an ideal situation. So now I think it's it's very important.
You know, this team's got to take that next step
forward this season. And I don't I don't think that

(08:15):
this is the wrong group to get it done. I
do think that there's going to be a lot more
positive than negative with the crack in the season.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah, I mean, fits talked about coaching, management and and
and and that's sort of thing I'll talk about players.
I think that bringing in Mason Marchman was a good
ad to the team. I we we talk a lot
about net front presidence. He's a guy that likes to
play in front of the net.

Speaker 12 (08:41):
Ry favorite favorite.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
He'll he'll he'll be talking a lot about Mason.

Speaker 4 (08:47):
Don't do the fly by, don't do the fly.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
By presence, Ryan Lingren, you know, gritty defenseman. I think
he he adds that to the blue line. I'm looking
forward to seeing that a night out from him. Freddie
gudrou back on that fourth line in the middle. You know,
one of the one of the odd skills for him
is the shootout, and we got we got a taste
of that in the preseason. He went one for one,

(09:11):
So I look forward to seeing more of that throughout
the season because that was an area that the Kraken
suffered in last season. So he'll definitely be part of
that group. I'm sure in the top three shooting in
those situations. So you know, those three players come in,
Andre Bakowski, mikey Asimont, Joevolena moved out, so you've got
a coup. You know, a few people going both directions.

(09:34):
From a personnel standpoint, I think the net of all
of that is I like the ads. I like what
it does for the team. I think it improves the team.
Does it make it one hundred and twenty point team, No,
but it moves them towards making the playoffs, and I
think that's a reasonable goal for the season.

Speaker 12 (09:51):
And now I think you bring that up.

Speaker 11 (09:53):
Perfect segue here, because we've talked to players before. I
talked with Ellie Tolbenen during media day and he wasn't
shy to use the actual word playoffs in this conversation.
When you think about the mathematics where you can improve
on incrementally, there is a chance to put yourself right
back into this mix. It depends on who you ask,

(10:14):
because the reality is outside.

Speaker 12 (10:16):
Of what we know in this area.

Speaker 11 (10:19):
There are not a lot of people nationally picking this
team to do anything. Matter of fact, a lot of
people nationally picked this team to finish toward the basement.

Speaker 12 (10:29):
So I begin with this.

Speaker 11 (10:30):
I think, Everett, you've had a conversation before some guys
in this room. I have, certainly, al you have certainly
what does this team need to be at its best,
sneak up on teams where they can grab some valuable
points and put themselves right back into the mix.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
Yeah, I mean I think this team.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
I go back to year two when this team made
the playoffs, and when you look at it, it was
a depth team. That was when we invented the phrase
the depth of this team is our strength. Then when
you have thirteen guys with career highs.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
Goals, assists, or points that season, everyone ropes, everyone rides.

Speaker 6 (11:08):
That was the mentality of that year. And I think
you're going to have to have that same type of
mentality and that same type of philosophy. And you can
already see with the way that the team played in preseason,
with the way that they practice, how Lane Lambert has
run the team so far, this is going to be
a team that bases itself on hard work, on defense,

(11:30):
on responsibility, on accountability. I'll give you an example. You know,
there was a play in I believe it was the
Calgary home game in the preseason. The Cracking were at
the end of a shift and they got the puck
to the red line and you could tell there was
a three on one and a half three on two developing,
and I feel like normally, you know, guys would have

(11:52):
tried to force their way into the zone, but they
made the responsible play. They dumped the puck into the zone,
they go off for a chain, and they come back
fresh on defense, and then they bottled up the Calgary
flames and we're able to get the puck back. It's
that type of discipline. It's that type of small, you know,
changes to the way that this team plays that I

(12:14):
think are gonna end up ultimately ultimately playing dividends. And
I've said from day one, since Lang got here, this
is a cracking team that's going to have to be
comfortable playing a three to two, two to one, three
to one with an empty net hockey hockey game. This
isn't a four to five goal a night team. And
that's okay as long as you're scoring three and only

(12:37):
giving up one and a half or giving up two.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
You know, I asked Al, I said a little trivia
question for you.

Speaker 6 (12:43):
Uh in the NHL, how many goals do you need
to score to win one more.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
Than the other team for a few minutes?

Speaker 4 (12:52):
Though? Yeah, exactly, so you need one question?

Speaker 12 (12:56):
Yeah, it's okay, you know, yeah, but no.

Speaker 4 (13:00):
I honestly I'm with you, Mike. Yeah, I think that
this team is going to be a lot better than
a lot of folks are giving them credit for.

Speaker 6 (13:07):
But it's going to take that hard work mentality, that
defensive first mentality, and like, listen, are you going.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
To have a forty goal scorer? Fifty goal scorer? You'd
love to have one, but probably not.

Speaker 6 (13:20):
But if you can have six twenty goal scores, if
you can have you know, seven or eight guys pitching
in thirty plus points, I think you're going to go
a very long way into you know, being a team
that is you know, for me, the floor of this
team should be battling for a playoff spot, playing meaningful

(13:41):
games after Saint Patrick's Day into late March any early April.
That should be the baseline your year, within four to
five points of a playoff spot, if not fewer, all
season long.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
And I think they have the group that can compete
to do that.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Well. You talk about discipline and defensive structure, and I
agree with all that. And you know, I mentioned players
that came in. I miss Matt Murray, and I think
he's an important part of what you just said because
obviously in your own zone fits you and I were
talking about this today that you know, goaltenders really like
a defensive first structure because it makes their job easier.

(14:17):
So number one, it's going to make our goaltending better
just by having that structure. Number Two, I like the
idea of having a third guy in the mix to
make everybody kind of stay on their toes and be competitive,
and you're starting to see that on the ice as well.
So I think that's part of it as well as
you know, that's part of the answer of how do
you get back to the playoffs. But also to your point,

(14:39):
there are some guys from that twenty two to twenty
three season that need to get back to that level.
Vince Done is a great example of that. Fourteen goals,
I think sixty one assists that season. Can he be
that guy again? Can he get back to that offensive level.
I don't think everybody's going to do it. You might
not have a fourth line that produces like that, but
you got guys like Shane Wright k I mean, can

(15:00):
he have his thirty plus goals season? Can Viniers take
that next step? So in some cases it's guys that
have done it before, Vince Done and other guys that
are In other examples, it's guys that have that next
level that they've got to get to. And if those
things can happen this season along with that structure we
just talked about, I think you see a team that
gets into the playoffs.

Speaker 11 (15:20):
See I'll say it before, I'll say it again when
we talk about how this roster had to change from
this last offseason. There are two ways to go about this.
It's ultimately how can you improve your team offensively?

Speaker 12 (15:32):
Not one guy, but team. And this is one of
the driest off seasons that we've.

Speaker 11 (15:37):
Ever seen for NHL free agency, and a lot of
the guys who I mean, I kind of say this,
you know, tongue in cheek, but we're potentially going to
be out there, got scooped up in the Florida Panthers
and look where they are once again. So the point is,
if you can't get Plan A and bring in a
big fish, so to speak, via free agency or trade,
what's Plan B improve your team authensively? Top two bottom.

(16:00):
So Fitz, you mentioned this going back to what this
team's identity was in season two, top to bottom offensive depth,
And for me and I go back into this again,
the Matt says, can you get around based on last
season two hundred and seventy goals that would have put
your seventh last year in the NHL for offense, and

(16:21):
teams that finished at two seventy or around that are
better eight place team Columbus two sixty seven tied for
them Toronto to sixty seven teams above that Colorado, Vegas, Dallas, Winnipeg, Washington,
and John Cooper's Tampa Bay Lightning. Yeah, they all made
the playoffs except Columbus, who missed at by a nose hair.

Speaker 12 (16:44):
The point beat and the point being, none of.

Speaker 11 (16:48):
This matters without defense. The structure is there with defense.
But with this cracking team, is it possible to ask
for thirty out of Jared McCann for, say, nineteen out
of Jaden Schwartz, twenty two out of Shane Wright, maybe
more twenty five out of Matty Beaneers, ten each from
say Don montor Yannie Newman, twenty from Mason march Mint,

(17:11):
twenty from Tolvenin once he's healthy again, Compocaco. These numbers
add up, and you could in theory get to two
seventy with this structure. So if those things fall into place,
you're giving yourselves a chance.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (17:24):
I mean, and we talked a lot about you know,
Matty Beaneers and Shane right in particular. You're looking for
both of those guys to take that next step, right,
and I feel like twenty for Maddy last year, right,
nineteen for Shane. I don't see a world where thirty
for either of them is too tall of an ask.

(17:45):
I don't think that's out of the question for them,
you know, I agree. I think Schwartz, you know, a
twenty goal season from him, Elliot Tolvenin looks like he's
going to be back on the power play and that
shot that we've we've grown accustomed to see.

Speaker 4 (18:00):
I think twenty.

Speaker 6 (18:01):
Twenty five, that last preseason game as possible. Yannie Newman
at one point led the entire league in PPP pre
ten preseason preseason.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
For ten points.

Speaker 6 (18:13):
You know, so I'm with you, But you know, you
talk about the offense, and yes, the Kraken didn't add
the big fish, but I also feel like what they
did add was an area that they were missing, and
they added a lot of grit and a lot of sandpaper.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
You have a Mason, a Mason marshmanth.

Speaker 6 (18:29):
Who can contribute offense, but is not going to shy
away from from the dirty areas. He's not going to
shy away from the physicality. Ryan Lindren is a player
who just wants to work. He is a hard worker.
Freddy Gadreau again, he's not gonna drop the gloves and
and fight every night, but he is a tough grinding

(18:53):
fourth line player, bottom six third fourth line guy who's
gonna chew up some minutes for you and could quite
possibly also get you twenty goals as well.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
So you know, I think that.

Speaker 6 (19:06):
Yes, this team didn't go out and get the ten
million dollar player, but what they did add was still
an element of I think what they were lacking, and
that was toughness. That was a little bit more grit,
a little bit more sand paper, and I think that's
going to.

Speaker 4 (19:19):
Go a long way.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Well. In one of the ways you get to that
number of Mikey, that two seventy number, or you know,
any number you feel you have to get to in
terms of goals scored to reach the playoffs, is health, right, Yeah,
through the preseason big thing. The Craken had a lot
of guys out in preseason. Most of them are back
minus Evans and Cocko. But if you can stay healthy

(19:43):
over the course of the season, then your guys like
Jordan Eberley who was out for the MISTROI of the
season last year, Jared mccannon would to spend time in
the middle that didn't get to playoff full season on
the wing. If just those two guys alone, if they
are healthy playing with Maddy Beniers. Well, you've got your
top line performing and those guys could all potentially hit
career highs.

Speaker 11 (20:03):
So whether we see this guy in the mix or not,
that remains to be seen. But such a juicy storyline
that's coming up here, the potential debut of Berkeley Catton
in the National Hockey League, And this week he spoke
with the media on expectations this season.

Speaker 10 (20:18):
Yeah, I think there's lots of everything. I think just
the small details. You know, from junior hockey to the
NHL is a big jump, so there's lots of the
little details really matter, just you know, hammering those down
and just you know, trying to build my game as
much as possible, not rushing anything really, just you know,
let me do my thing when I get my chance
to go, do my best.

Speaker 12 (20:38):
So Berkeley Catton is here. He will make his NHL
debuts soon.

Speaker 11 (20:42):
We don't know what's going to be Game one or
down the line, but the Kraken have now nine games
in theory to decide if they want to keep him
or send him back to the Western Hockey League before
the first year of his three year entry level deal
kicks in. It's a big big jump, as you heard
from what he said going from the w HL into

(21:05):
the NHL. What are the expectations for Berkeley Catton on
this roster to fit in if it is going to
be for a full year this season.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Well, I would say that I like what they're doing
with him so far. And today we saw him subbing
in on a line with Schwartz right in Tolnen, but
in that Schwartz position on the left side. And if
I got to take a guy like Berkeley Catton, who
looks like he's going to start out on the wing,
and put him alongside of somebody that's going to teach

(21:36):
him how to be a pro, how to play at
this level things, he's got to adjust his game to
to be a winger in the NHL. Jaden Schwartz is
top of my list to do that with. So I
like that a lot. Additionally, I would say that, you know,
bringing him up to the NHL level is just being
around the guys.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
Right.

Speaker 3 (21:54):
I loved what we talked to Chandler Steven today. I
love what he said about having a winterton and and
catting over to his house for a home cooked meal. Right,
you don't really understand, but these guys are at five
star hotels. But I'll tell you that thirty dollars burger By,
like the tenth time you've ordered, it just doesn't taste
that good anymore. You know, It's just nice to go

(22:16):
home to someone's house. You smell the food cooking when
you come in, they're happy to have you. And I
think that brings teams together. I think that helps teach
you how to be a pro. And I guarantee you
those two guys will do it for somebody else someday.

Speaker 6 (22:29):
Yeah, I mean, I think I love that story from
Chandler because you want that leadership, you know what I mean.
You've got a number of young guys on this team.
Whether you're up, whether you're down, you're in between. You know,
there are some guys on this team who are living
out of hotels all year long just because of the
nature of their contract, the nature of of what.

Speaker 4 (22:51):
They have to do.

Speaker 6 (22:52):
So anytime that you can come sit at someone's table
and wrestle around with someone's kids and have a burger,
have a steak in a glass of wine and just
chill and relax and be a human being, that's awesome.

Speaker 4 (23:04):
So I love that story.

Speaker 6 (23:06):
Today, you know, I love the move of Berkeley Catton
of the wing in the preseason. I thought he looked
a lot more comfortable, He looked had more creativity.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
You know.

Speaker 6 (23:18):
It wasn't as as glaring of an adjustment when he
moved off to the wing, and I.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
Liked his game. He scored his first goal and his
only goal in the preseason.

Speaker 6 (23:29):
But I think that move to the wing, in my opinion,
I feel like solidified his spot on this roster. I
think we all kind of thought he was gonna make
the team, unless you know, it was just an absolute,
you know, bad training camp, which he didn't have, you
know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
I think he did show that he could he can
play in this league.

Speaker 6 (23:51):
But I do think there's gonna need to be some protection,
you know, in terms of does he play every game
of the back to back? Do you play him in
the first nine in a row and then you see
what happens, right, I think there's gonna be some juggling
going on in the lineup. But I do think that
he's a player that has shown he can learn on
a fly. He's quickly can pick up you know, this

(24:12):
level and this style of play, and you know, I
think that he ends up staying here all year. You know,
he's got the absence with Coppocaco out, so there's gonna
be a month of games that he potentially is gonna
have to play. I mean he may be he may
bypass that nine games next week. Right by the time
we get to to back home after that long road trip.

(24:33):
He may be in his after nine games. So that's
gonna be a huge adjustment for him. But he says
all the right things. I love the way he looks,
in the way that he works in practice. I again,
I think that he's going to stick with this team
all year, but I think it's gonna earn it.

Speaker 4 (24:50):
I don't think it's gonna be given to him.

Speaker 6 (24:52):
Lane wants accountability, and it sounds like everyone's gonna be
on that same plane, that same level, which is very
refreshing to here. And and I think we're going to see
him here all year.

Speaker 11 (25:03):
You guys teed this up appropriately because here's Chandler Stevenson
followed by Ryan Winterton on that dinner over at Stevenson's
place the other night.

Speaker 12 (25:11):
Whatever.

Speaker 2 (25:16):
Yeah, him and Wentz.

Speaker 13 (25:18):
I mean they haven't had a home cooked meal since camp,
so I know what that's like when you're on the road,
and yeah, just kind of getting.

Speaker 4 (25:26):
Out of the hotel and.

Speaker 13 (25:29):
More so kind of a babysit too. Em and Wentz
were playing hockey the whole time and wrestling and all that.
So yeah, I mean it's obviously good to have him
here and get some home cooking in them. My wife
really likes to cook, so she made pork tenderloin. We
had chicken, we had salad, potatoes, rice, kind of everything.

(25:50):
They think they kind of rolled out of there. So yeah,
it was just something that you know, I I got
invited when I was a young guy being in tell
and Lem in a hotel, and you always appreciated that.
So just yeah, I'd like to have over more if
I could.

Speaker 3 (26:07):
Homekick meal is nice, you know, kind of in uber
eats and going for dinner in the basketball we so
se home cooking me it was nice, and you know
it was nice to them.

Speaker 11 (26:16):
Hey, there's only so much you can do when you
have food delivered right at your doorstep. And I'll tell
you this, that Stevenson cookbook, it might I think inside
of battle between what they had on the table at
al Kiniski and his brisket as well that sound a
pretty tasty.

Speaker 3 (26:35):
Are you telling me? I need to invite some of
the boys over for some brisket.

Speaker 11 (26:38):
Oh, I know you literally gave this stuff into my hands.
I've already eaten half of it.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
I can't believe you eat it cold, cold.

Speaker 12 (26:47):
Warm, I pulled. I plucked it right out of the bag.

Speaker 11 (26:50):
Getting home, I took my kids to baseball, I had
dinner on the run, and before then I put it
right into a case of dia.

Speaker 12 (26:57):
I had it hot, all right.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
Well, all the left bits and pieces that goes into
a plate of mac and cheese.

Speaker 11 (27:02):
Just so you know, I might be conceiving ways to
put this stuff in other dishes like green eggs and
hand from doctor Seuss.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
There you go.

Speaker 12 (27:10):
Loved it, loved it? Al I again last weekend?

Speaker 3 (27:15):
Huh that was your food segment.

Speaker 11 (27:19):
Yeah, see it's it's it's the obligatory food segment. I
may or may not be baking here for an endorsement,
but we'll talk about that for another day. Uh to
goaltending we go. It will be a three goalie system
to crack and employee starting this week. Officially, Joey Decord,
Philip Grubauer and Matt Murray in the mix, and here's

(27:40):
a lane Lambert is addressing, finding reps for them in
practice day after day.

Speaker 14 (27:45):
Think to our goaltendant, coach, Colinsuliano has done a great job.
We've gone through this, you know, at length in preparation
for training camp and you know, heading into the regular
season as to how we can best keep everyone sharp,
you know, and certainly he's done a great job of that,

(28:06):
whether it.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
Be through.

Speaker 14 (28:09):
You know, practice reps. Clearly, the goaltenders are out on
the ice, you know, half an hour early. If you
have two goalies, a lot of times you're only out
on the ice fifteen minutes early. So there's just or
you know, you have a situation where maybe Joey doesn't
go out and Grooby and Murray do you know of
one of those two plays then they wouldn't go out.

(28:31):
So there's different ways of managing it, and there's you know,
there's some certainly some positives to that in terms of
giving each other proper rest too when when they're playing
and you know, Joey's Joey's going to play a decent
amount here. And I'm not going to announce starting goaltenders,
but certainly, you know, there's going to be times when

(28:53):
he's going to need rest as well.

Speaker 11 (28:55):
That's Lane Lambert on the goaltending situation. We know for sure,
beyond the shadow of a doubt, Joey to Cord is
the number one guy. Jason Botterl said, so weeks ago
when training camp opened up, But guys, how do you
see this playing out here? The Cord, Grubauer and Murray.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (29:12):
I mean, I think we've seen three goalies in the
past and the NHL, and sometimes it's worked.

Speaker 4 (29:21):
Usually it hasn't.

Speaker 6 (29:22):
And that's that's not me causing, you know, saying anything
that's untrue, like just go go back and look at
the last few teams that has happened.

Speaker 4 (29:31):
And I do think that, you know, I forget. I
think it was it was you that might.

Speaker 6 (29:35):
Have said it a little bit ago about the competition
pushing each other, and I think, yes, Joey is the starter,
but you know, I guarantee you he's just as motivated
to keep that starting job because he's got two very capable.

Speaker 4 (29:50):
Goalies behind him.

Speaker 6 (29:51):
If you're Matt Murray, if you're Philip Grubauer, you're trying
to be that number two, that go to guy. You know,
if I'm putting my my analytic hat on, I do
think that there's going to have to come a time
where there's gonna need to be a hard conversation or
a decision that's gonna have to be made, because at

(30:12):
the end of the day, you got two nets in practice,
you got one net during the game, obviously, And you know,
I don't envy either goaltender. I don't envy the coaches
of the management having to make that decision.

Speaker 4 (30:26):
You know.

Speaker 6 (30:26):
If if I'm guessing, and again Lane, you know he's
not gonna tell us the starters, but it wouldn't surprise
me to see all three goalies get too three games
in the first twelve and then maybe that's kind of
your you know in baseball, your extended spring training, maybe
that's your extended training camp if you will get another

(30:49):
decent look at some guys and potentially have have to
have those conversations. I don't know, that's me speculating. I'm
just guessing here, but I do think that at a
certain point there there's going to need to be just
two goalies on the roster. But I like what the
competition has brought so far. I thought all three goalies

(31:12):
performed well in preseason, and again I don't envy the
decision makers having to make this, potentially make this decision.

Speaker 3 (31:21):
Yeah, listen, we're not a unicorn doing this right now.
There are some teams in the league that have three
goaltenders on their opening day rosters. And these aren't, you know,
bottom seller teams. This is this is Tampa, this is Colorado.
I think Carolina was on that list. But you know,
teams do this when they've got some question marks around goaltending,

(31:41):
and there's nothing wrong with that. And I think that
we have some question marks as well. Will we have
three goaltenders after the first of the year, I'd be
I'd be shocked. I think this question mark gets answered
in the next two months, next two and a half months.
But I'm excited to see it. Like I said, I
think the competition is good for the overall result that

(32:03):
it will have.

Speaker 11 (32:04):
Yeah, Philip Grubauer this year in the preseason save percentage
nine two five in two games, Matt Murray say percentage
nine two zero into games.

Speaker 2 (32:16):
Can then be.

Speaker 11 (32:17):
Interested to see how all this plays out around Joey
de coord here to begin the season. Speaking of that,
let's talk schedule before we make our final calls here
to wrap up this podcast. Ducks coming up on Thursday,
Vegas on Saturday, and then the big old six game
swing Montreal on their opening night, Ottawa, Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington,

(32:43):
those two teams back to back, and then ending in Winnipeg,
and you come right back home to face the Edmonton Oilers. Fellas,
how big is this opening stretch going to be?

Speaker 4 (32:57):
No goohed good, no big out, big out.

Speaker 3 (32:59):
You're up okay from a schedule standpoint, I like seeing
a lot of these teams in the first month. There's
still some figuring out that's going on, new players, that
sort of thing, and so you know, the Kracken are
gonna need to steal some wins against these top teams
in October. You know, like you said, Mikey, Edmonton twice
in the in that month. You're still one of those

(33:20):
I'd rather have those two games in October, in those
two games in January February, let's put it that way.
They're going to face some other top teams in the
month as well. You mentioned Montreal for their home opener.
Vegas is going to be a tough games, So you
know what, you steal a few of those wins from
those top teams, and you beat the teams you should beat,
you come out of that month on top. In my opinion, I.

Speaker 4 (33:41):
Love the schedule.

Speaker 6 (33:42):
I think it's a perfect mix of a couple of
teams that you're going to be right there with in
terms of standings, in terms of record. You know, you
look at Anaheim and Seattle, right though, I think those
two teams are going to be battling for, you know,
us second wild card or battling for trying to get

(34:03):
into that playoff conversation. You've got the teams that you
would love to beat in Edmonton, in Vegas, in Toronto
on hockey Night in Canada. That's gonna be wonderful, you know.
But I do think that for the Kraken, if they
can go five hundred game above game under hover or

(34:24):
better than five hundred, I think that that's gonna be
a win. And we're gonna we're gonna get tested early.
Because again I think I'm with you, Al, I don't.
I don't want to see Toronto when Austin Matthews as
a chance to really pick it up in December.

Speaker 4 (34:37):
I'm not trying to see Connor.

Speaker 6 (34:39):
McDavid and Leon Dreisidle in January, Zach Hyman was just
put on lt I R. So he's gonna be out
for a while for the Edmonton Oilers. You know Vegas,
they've they're going through some injury issues as well.

Speaker 12 (34:52):
Getting Mitch Marner in Game two of the season.

Speaker 6 (34:54):
You get Mitch Marner in Game two of the season,
but you also get Mitch Marner who was still trying
to get used to Jack Eichel and everybody else. So
I said, yeah, I would much rather see Game two
Vegas as opposed to Game twenty two Vegs right, So
I think that's a favorable schedule from that standpoint. A
lot of coaches will tell you. I love getting on

(35:16):
the road early and getting a long trip out of
the way. There's a team dinner when you get in
on Sunday, Canadian Thanksgivings on Monday, so you're gonna be out,
You're gonna be you know, Al Kaniski, We're gonna roll
him into the Montreal booth after Canadian Thanksgiving dinner.

Speaker 4 (35:31):
Looking forward to that.

Speaker 6 (35:32):
But I love the schedule and I think it's one
that the Kraken can navigate. And like I said, if
they can obviously you want to win as many as
you can. But if you're coming back home after six
eight games and you're three three and two, or you're
four to three and one, or you know, you're, you're

(35:52):
whatever it is, I think you're in a really good spot.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
Here's the one last thing I'll say about the schedule,
and Mike, yes, you've probably got a point on this too.
But as difficult as the schedule is in October, and
like I, like I said, I'm okay with it, it
kind of flips the other way for November. So if
you come out of October and like you said, if
it's you're a game or two above five hundred, you
better not let off the gas in November because there's
a bunch of games in there that you should win.

(36:19):
And I think the krack and missed too many of
those last year. So would I rather have the schedule
the other way? No, because I think that you if
you play to the level of that competition in October
and you carry that level into November, you should win
all of those games.

Speaker 11 (36:33):
A lot of a lot of points you can grab
off the table in that November slate Chicago, San Jose,
Saint Louis Winnipeg. Some folks say maybe falling back a
bit San Jose again, Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh as well.

Speaker 3 (36:50):
There's a lot talk we talked about that.

Speaker 6 (36:54):
You know that that American Thanksgiving deadline. You know, you
go back the last twenty years. I think it's over
eighty eighty one eighty two percent of teams that are
in a playoff spot by American Thanksgiving go on to
make the playoffs.

Speaker 11 (37:11):
So we're running out of time, our last hit on
this here, we're gonna get down to the brass tacks
question to get into the playoff mix. The Krack and
will need what I'll begin right here. For me, Number one,
it's gotta be health, because without health, you cannot have
depth when it comes to the scoring needs that they

(37:33):
have right now to be productive and hit that benchmark
to be among the more productive teams combined with defense
to be into the playoff mix. I think for me, secondly,
goaltending behind Joey Decord as specially effective when it comes
to the back to backs. They'll have to play the season.

Speaker 4 (37:53):
Yep. Those two for me, and I think a third
I'll add on to that.

Speaker 6 (37:56):
The Krack and I said it before, I'll see it again,
and they have to be comfortable being a hard working,
defensive first team. This is gonna be a team that's
gonna win a lot of two to one games, a
lot of three to two games.

Speaker 4 (38:07):
You know, it's okay.

Speaker 6 (38:09):
You don't have to be the sexiest team every night
as long as you're winning. And I think if this
team can buy in to that hard working philosophy and
they do it effectively, I think this team, again, they
will be better than a lot of people give them
credit for. And I think they can make the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
And I'll add a fourth the special teams. The special
teams has to get better, and I think under Chris
Taylor and Aaron steaklof that, you know their schemes that
they're working into the team right now, if they can
get those percentage points better by two, three, four, five
percentage points, I think that's gonna have a big impact
on the outcome of this team.

Speaker 12 (38:45):
In April, the blank slate's a beautiful thing.

Speaker 11 (38:47):
It begins Game one of eighty two coming up Thursday. Fellas,
I know we all can't wait time to get after
it once again.

Speaker 6 (38:55):
Last thing I'll say at the time of this record
the Seattle Kraken are in first place.

Speaker 4 (39:04):
Yes, specific division.

Speaker 12 (39:06):
I'm you heard it.

Speaker 2 (39:08):
We're unbeaten.

Speaker 4 (39:09):
The Cracking are in third place in the Pacific. LA's
down free nothing right now, Cracket in first place.

Speaker 7 (39:17):
We're all starting zero zero.

Speaker 11 (39:19):
How can the Kraken build off of that and begin
this season with a word that begins with an, s
ends with a K, and rhymes with beak. I won't
say it ever, it's superstitious.

Speaker 12 (39:32):
I see that look right there. But hey, we're all.

Speaker 11 (39:35):
Zero zero and the Cracking can work on things starting
on Thursday with a very positive note. All right, glad
you hung out with us here. That'll cover our basis.
