(01:04):
Audio Network. Mike Benton, al Koniski with you. We're gonna
hear from Shane Wright we're gonna hear from Riker Evans
as well in just a little bit as we recap
the Kraken Super Skills showcase presented by Washington's Lottery here
at climbate blog arena, the Team Ruby upending Team Joey
twenty to fifteen and what was a collection a cornucopia
(01:26):
of skills in different categories, ranging from one on one,
breakaway relays, hardest shot shooting accuracy, three on three and
much more. By the way, our verbal hug goes out
to ever fits you who wasn't able to make it
here for today handling a personal matter and right now
back in the Midwest before the krack and get back
here this next Tuesday. But al, how are you what
(01:48):
a scene today?
Speaker 3 (01:49):
I was, Oh, it was fun.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
It was fun to go into one of these events
today after a big win. Really just twenty four hours
of great fan engagement, excitement, great hockey, just just great
for the community.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Team Ruby over Team Joey twenty to fifteen, where it
was purely on bragging rights here and for a lot
of the young players that had Team Ruby here for
this one, well they were kind of joking like, hey,
we get an op date here eventually.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah, I think that's what they're all hoping for, and
you know, the way they played last night, they certainly
earned it, and you know, gave the fans a good
show today, very engaging. It's a great event to get
people out. I think they had almost eight thousand people
in the building. So the players appreciate, the fans appreciate.
It's a great outing.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
And these players surrounded by a throng of fans even
as early as roughly an hour hour and a half
before this event finally got going a little past one
thirty Pacific time, an autograph signing on the concourse. I
think it really shows of just how feverish and how
passionate that this fan base is once again to be
(02:56):
surrounded here by these players, and they were treated here
to quite a show because you had a relay event
when this got underway, you had the hardest shot competition,
and you also had a shooting accuracy competition as well.
But among the highlightser besides the silky, smooth, filthy moves
that we saw from players like Jordan Eberley, Oliver b.
(03:16):
Yorkstrand Adam Larson, Shane Wright as well, we saw Jamie
alexiak lead into a couple and brank the century mark
for the hardest shot.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Well, it just goes to show you a size weight
leverage on the hockey stick and have a big impact
if you can connect them all together. And he did
it not just once, twice, taking first and second place
with shots over one hundred miles an hour.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Now you don't want to put me out there on skates.
And by the way, we're gonna hear from Shane Wright
and Ryker Evans here joining us down low here at
Climate Pledgerina in just a bit. But Ali, you had
a chance to get out there. I observe this here
from the comfort and the safety of the bench and
the other sidelines as well. But I think to you,
what did it mean to had that kind of an
experience out there on the ice with the guys.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Well, I mean usually I'm a hundred feet up in
the air watching the game from up top, so just
seeing the opening was interesting, you know, the laser show,
you know, the fans, it was a different view of
what we normally see up high. But then interacting with
the players a little bit, you could tell there was
a vibe of.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
This is fun. Hockey is fun.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
It's fun to be a part of this, it's fun
to do this, it's fun to be here with the fans.
So obviously the outcome of last night's game plays a
little bit into that. But even if the guys hadn't won,
I think they would have been fully engaged.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
They had to don helmets here for the three on
three competition to end this, but before that they had
the option of just going completely helmetless, wearing a ball
cap forward, a ball cap backward. And then as well,
you had player families VIPs as well on the bench
to take this thing in.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Yeah, Yanni Gorgon's daughter was on the bench, and you know,
I think that might have been a secret to the
success they had over there. Obviously, the goaltenders acting as coaches.
That was huge, lots of fun.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
All right, This smoke is finally clearly out of the
hallway here from this skills competition because Shane Wright put
on an absolute master class of a fiery move in
the skills showcase. Shane Wright joining us now myself Al
Kanisky as well. How'd you enjoy yourself out there?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
It was fun, it was fun.
Speaker 6 (05:13):
I've never really done anything like that before be able
to do a few skills there and just kind of
interact with the fans and you have some fun with
the guys out there.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Was it was a fun time.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Now, what did this mean from an interaction standpoint? Do
you play in front of seventeen thousand plus Night to ninth?
But this has a different kind of environment.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's a it's a more fun,
more relaxed environment kind of the fans get to see
us on the ice kind of just interacting and being
relaxed out there, and you know, in a different kind
of light and different angle that they would you see
us during a game. So I think it's cool for
them kind of see it's just out there having fun.
You know, we've got hats on set of helmets and
just go and join ourselves out there.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Twenty fifteen was the final score of this skills showcase.
You a part of the winning crew team Grooby. Now,
is there a promiseful filled? Maybe with this team skips
practice or something else?
Speaker 6 (06:05):
Yeah, I think the guys were talking about extra day
off for the team that won, but no, it was
uh yeah, probably just some bragging rights, that's all.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Did you did you have an idea of what move
you wanted to make ahead of time on your breakaway.
Speaker 6 (06:17):
Yeah, I kinda.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
I was talking to rig about it.
Speaker 6 (06:19):
Actually, I'm just like like asking, like what should I do?
And I kind of thought like, all right, I can.
I know, I can pick up the puck like that,
and then I don't know, try to like do a
spinner around a shot or something. And I've never tried
it before, and I was happy I was able to
pull it off.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
Could we see it in a pro game coming up
in the future.
Speaker 6 (06:38):
Absolutely, Dan would kill me. There's no way I could
try that.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Would you try that in a practice sometime?
Speaker 5 (06:47):
Maybe? Maybe?
Speaker 6 (06:48):
Maybe we'll see it. I don't know how consistent it
would be of a move, but it would be. It's
a fun thing to kind of pull off here and there.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
But how long were you thinking of pulling off something
like this?
Speaker 6 (06:59):
A minute before I went, I think I thought of it,
and I was just like, okay, I'll sure, I'll try this,
like trying to think of something kind of creative and
and different, and yeah, I mean it was like a
minute or two before I was about to go. I
just kind of thought of it and decided to go
with it.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Taking yourself out of the equation. Who had the filthiest
move out there?
Speaker 6 (07:18):
Was move the first one? Yeah, the first one, the
like all the way behind the back. Who else had
a nice one? I mean, I mean Lars just kind
of stepped up. Big Lars was m VP there for sure.
He had he had a few nice moves. But yeah,
I mean a lot of nice goals out there.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
Shaney had team groovy and team decord. How much of
the outcome was the result of coaching all of it.
Speaker 6 (07:45):
We had a much bigger presence. We also had you know,
Gordo's daughter on her bench as well, and she was she.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
Was a great impact.
Speaker 6 (07:53):
She was a great voice there, really really positive and reassuring.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
And uh yeah, I mean it was all.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
Coaching kept the bench light.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, got yeah, exactly exactly.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
What difference doesn't make having kids out there, families out
there and a chance here it's to kind of you know,
more sill, relax versus the usual game that environment.
Speaker 6 (08:13):
Yeah, I mean, it's fun, it's fun. You know, it's
it's different than what we're used to doing. You know,
it's used to uh you know, it's it's focused. You know,
it's got to be we gotta have you know, we
got to execute plays. We gotta you know, be locked
in and dialed into to practice, but be able to
take a chance to kind of relax and just go
and have fun, have the family out there, you know,
interact with the fans and all that is really cool.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Now. I can't help but think that it's easier to
come to the rink after you win a game like
you did twenty four hours previous against the Vegas Golden Knights.
What did that do as far as setting tempo, setting tones,
setting the mood here for these guys, setting into the
weekend and then next Tuesday.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
Yeah, I think just you know, it's always more fun winning,
you know, anytime you you win and go to the
rink the next day, the mood's always you know, a
little bit better. And yeah, hopefully we can you know,
build off that win, get someonement. I'm here and you'll
string a few good games here together.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Did you see Jared mccannon with that pick he had
back a cent rise and think this one might be
over in about a few seconds.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Yeah, yeah, no, as soon as Kanada got that breakaway.
It's funny.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
I told him right before the OT I told him
he was gonna score and he went out.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
There for score.
Speaker 6 (09:19):
So I had a pretty good feeling you he was
gonna go and score there.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
How big was it to get a win to begin
this home standing?
Speaker 5 (09:26):
Yeah, it's huge.
Speaker 6 (09:27):
It's huge, especially against No a good team like that,
you know, division rival team. I think they're they're they're
high in the Pacific standings right now, so team we're chasing.
But yeah, it's a big win, big, big statement win
to start off the home stand here.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Now, you you start about a couple of months here
into the season where you feel like that, you know
you've got you know, more of like a routine down
pat in your first full NHL season. But it all
begins when you're told that, hey, go ahead and find
a place. How long does it usually take to you know,
get that settled here in a market like in Seattle
and know that you're finally feeling at home and getting
(10:01):
all the boxes moved in and everything else that kind
of comes along with getting a brand new place.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 6 (10:06):
It was Uh obviously had to look for a new place,
had to had to find a spot to live, and
he was able to find apartment Southlake Union area, just
a one bedroom kind of just for myself, and yeah,
it's always it's always fun moving in a new place,
moving into a new city like this, and yeah, it's exciting.
I like my spot, like my location, and you like
(10:27):
where I'm at.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
Did Will and Maddie sell you in the idea of
maybe getting a roommate?
Speaker 7 (10:31):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Maybe, Yeah?
Speaker 2 (10:32):
I think.
Speaker 5 (10:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (10:34):
I mean I'm I like kind of being doing my
own thing. I like kind of being on my own page.
So I like having my own space. But at the
same time, it's always nice, you know, having a roommate.
Speaker 5 (10:42):
Like, yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
So as you look forward this homestand you got five
more games Columbus up next, Uh, what do you take
from this big win last night into that game on Tuesday?
Speaker 6 (10:54):
Yeah, just just build off it. You know, it's a
it was a big win. Like I said, it was
an important win as well, and like, yeah, just try
to build that momentum. Just kind of feed off that
and you'll just keep rolling.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
Here.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
What feels routine with Dan Bilsman now in the NHL
level that you experienced last season in the Indi American
Hockey League.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
Yeah, I mean I know what to expect from him,
I know, uh, you know, kind of message he wants
to send and you know how he gets that message
across as well, and how he how he motivates his players,
and you know what he expects from me as well,
and you know what I have to do to earn
the ice time in and you know, earn his trust
as well. And you know, it's nice having familiar face
like that.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Have you seen anything yet that reminds you of just
the kind of humor he brought and how funny he
is from last season for sure?
Speaker 3 (11:39):
For sure.
Speaker 6 (11:40):
You know he's always trying to keep it light, always
trying to keep it loose and relaxed. And yeah, I
mean he's always done a good job with that. It's
always kind of been his thing is you'll bring some
fun in the room and into meetings and all that
kind of stuff.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
And yeah, I love it, and all the other the
other guys do as well.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Going back here to the skills competition thing, we're gonna
kind of go off and like the Ultimate Universe World here,
pick your all time NHL dream team for a three
round shootout.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
For a shootout. Uh, I'm trying to think of who's
good shootouts. I think I'll go Pavel dat Suit. I
think he was magician, Yeah, magician and just knows how
to score. I always watched watch said Sidney Crosby score
a lot, you know, the Winter Classic goal and stuff.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
And Third, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
I think our player development coach Jeff Tambalini. I think, yes,
he is one of the highest shootout percentages of NHL history.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
So I'll go with Tamba there.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Yeah, came out of Michigan and had a little bit
of time with the LA Kings, with the New York
Islanders as well.
Speaker 6 (12:52):
Yeah, I remember him saying he's got like one of
the highest shootout of all time. So I think you
gotta throw a guy like that in.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
When we think of how much more that you're going
through a year like this and understanding what it takes
to make the biggest impactor at the NHL level. What
coach made the greatest influence in you growing up, whose
words are a reminder for you every day when you
get up, get a bet.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
And go to the rink.
Speaker 6 (13:17):
I mean, I wouldn't say there was really a coach.
I think just you know, my parents have really bad,
you know, a huge impact on me, and really, you know,
big influence, you know, especially when I was younger, you know,
spend a lot of time with my dad in the
car and stuff and uh talking about hockey and talking
about you know, what what it takes for for you know,
me to be the best and and uh to get
the most out of my game and stuff. And you
(13:39):
know he's always tried to motivate me, but he's always uh,
you know, support me. He's always been there, and you
know his message has always just been going and enjoyed,
to have fun and you know, trust yourself and trust
just what you do.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
I remember those rides home as well after games and
same kind of conversations with my dad, and my dad
was always the one that pushed me harder at my
mom was always the one making sure I had and
it was a good balance. What are some of those
lessons you have in the car that you remember that
you kind of taken too your games today?
Speaker 6 (14:06):
Yeah, I think exactly what you said. You know, obviously
some some tough car rides after bad games dad, But
you know, at the end of the day, he just
you know, he loves me. He wants to see me succeed,
He wants to see me at my best, and you
know he only does it because he cares about me
and he wants to, you know, be.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Me to have all the success in the world.
Speaker 6 (14:24):
And yeah, my mom's always always the positive voice or
reason and I'm always reassuring always, you know, always that
that positive voice.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
So definitely good balance.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
You have some well deserved downtime until the next game
on Tuesday. So how do you spend the off days now?
Speaker 5 (14:39):
Just just rest? Uh?
Speaker 6 (14:40):
You know, obviously had a pretty big busy schedule the
past month there, and you know a lot of travel
as well, So I think just take some time off,
rest the body and.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
They're recovering me be ready to go, and when.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
We're back, good vibes are back. Shane, thanks much for
doing this.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Yes, appreciate it all.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Right, Shane Wright, just with us. He's just getting comfortable
and sitting down with us now. Defenseman Ryker Evans as
a part of the skills competition Team Gruby over Team
Joey twenty to fifteen. How's it feel to have bragging
rights after this one?
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Riker?
Speaker 8 (15:07):
Yeah, I mean Joey's pretty confident they're gonna win yesterday,
So Sam Luciday.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Was pretty any chirping yesterday, any chirping afterword that kind
of you know, kind of put the esclamation mark you're
on this thing.
Speaker 8 (15:20):
Uh not really, I mean Joey was pretty invested in it,
so I made sure a lot of them all.
Speaker 7 (15:26):
He did lose.
Speaker 8 (15:26):
But the best part was like he had no control
over if they won or loss because you're just coaching.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Well what a show that that this whole group put on.
And a bit of a different vibe in that we
discussed with Shane Wright just moments earlier here. Different from
the usual seventeen thousand on a game night. This had
kind of more, I think, to me, a party type
of environment.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
What about you?
Speaker 7 (15:49):
Yeah, it was pretty cool.
Speaker 8 (15:51):
I like the little production they had to start there.
I mean, we don't really get to see what happens
before we step on the ice, so I thought that
was pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
What was the best part about it, you thought, I.
Speaker 7 (16:02):
Don't know, it literally felt like we were watching a movie.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (16:05):
The lights that go on the ice was pretty cool,
and I think people had flashlight tilly or whatever, and
I thought that would all pretty school.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Well just like me as well, because I'm behind a
curtain when I'm wrapping up the pregame show ever and
now have a good view of this from upstairs as well.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
Yeah, we're we're up top usually, so seeing it from
ice level was new for us as well.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
So that was fun.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
But you know, in terms of fan engagement and growing
hockey in the Seattle community, how important is it for
the Seattle Cracking to do events like these?
Speaker 8 (16:33):
Yeah, I mean it's uh, definitely brings fans together. It's
something different that like I don't think a lot of
teams do. And then like you just go out there
and have fun, there's nothing too serious.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (16:45):
I think a lot of the kids love it too.
Speaker 8 (16:47):
They just can interact with with us, and especially when
we're doing the sign things like that, you can see
some of the fans and the support was pretty awesome.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
What was your first reaction seeing the amount of fans
that you had signing autographs for them on the cor
course this morning.
Speaker 8 (17:01):
Yeah, I mean I was pretty shocked when we first
got off the elevator. I didn't really realize how many
people are actually gonna be you there. I think there
was one line upstairs that like wrapped around the whole rink,
So that was pretty crazy.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Well, Team Ruby over Team Joey twenty fifteen here and
the skills Showcase back this season once again at Climate
Pledge Arena. I mean, Alan, I just went through to
lead off the podcast, drop here about all the sites,
the sounds, and even some of the filthy moves that
we saw in the one on one, breakaway relay three
on three events as well, Jamie Alexi, I have big
(17:35):
rig break in the century mark and the hardest shot competition.
On top of that, to see your old Coachella Valley
teammate Shane Wright go behind the back, how can you
not brand that as the filthiest move of the day.
Speaker 8 (17:47):
No, yeah, it was definitely a sweet move. I didn't
know he was gonna pull that off. That was huge
for a team we kind of needed that. We hadn't
really scored too much, but it was. It was a
pretty nice movie, did it.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Would it surprise you to hear that he had no
idea he was doing it until he went right to
center Rice and decided, Okay, I'm going to go reverse
lacrosse shot behind the back.
Speaker 8 (18:07):
I feel like that's how you usually do it, Like
you think about it too much, like before you go,
it's just like kind of off the coffee, just think
about it and you just do it.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Did you have a move in your pocket ready to
go in case you got tapped on the shoulder for
that one.
Speaker 7 (18:21):
Uh yeah, I had something probably definitely.
Speaker 8 (18:25):
I mean it definitely wasn't as crazy as Shane's Bye,
I had something.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Who else did you enjoy watching out there on the
breakaway side of things?
Speaker 7 (18:33):
I mean, watching Lars is pretty funny.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
He was loving every second of the breakaway anytime you
had the opportunity.
Speaker 7 (18:40):
So I love watching him go there.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Oh he's got quite the personality to meet the moment
as well.
Speaker 5 (18:46):
Yes too, so in classic large style.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
The filthy hands crashes right into the boards and the
place goes wild.
Speaker 5 (18:52):
You were involved in the hardest shot? What what?
Speaker 4 (18:55):
What did you expect going And did you think you'd
put up three numbers or did you think you'd have
the hardest Who or who? Who did you think would
have the hardest shot?
Speaker 8 (19:03):
Well, I definitely expected rig to have the harder shot.
He weighs to sixty five or whatever.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
Like pound the prettyistic as a two by four all
so like.
Speaker 7 (19:14):
I think like a one to twenty flex.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Yeah, it's crazy how how how stiff it is?
Speaker 8 (19:19):
Yeah, and like, yeah, it's it's impressive that how like
he's able to use that, but I mean, he weighs
a lot. But I know, I uh, I wasn't expecting
to play it up.
Speaker 5 (19:30):
Had you ever done that before, Radar Gun, I.
Speaker 8 (19:34):
Think I might have done that one of the AHL
starts the Ulcar games.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Now, for folks who don't understand the mechanics of what
goes into the hardest shot doesn't matter more of where
you shoot the puck, how well you keep it on
the ice, how you step into it, the amount of
force that you put into it as well.
Speaker 4 (19:50):
In case of Montour, dump it in the corner corner.
Speaker 7 (19:54):
Is still read in.
Speaker 8 (19:55):
The problem was like you have to kind of hit
low and like middle, because like I hit high in
the corner and barely register anything your first shot.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
You can't throw in the corner. If you want to
have a go eighty eight, you can't.
Speaker 7 (20:10):
Pick a corner. You just have to kind of go
low in the middle.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Give me three guys in NHL history that you would
love to line up in the hardest shot if you could.
Speaker 8 (20:19):
Shay Weber, Yeah, you know, I mean, I I've heard
of him, I've never seen him actually play in his day.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
I thought you're gonna say Al ay A Frady with
with the bald head.
Speaker 7 (20:36):
Skelly going.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
He hit like one O three I believe in the
in one of the first ones at Montreal. Take us
back through the first few weeks of this season, Riker,
I mean, this team is of course trying to find
it's way back in the winning path. They did so
just the other night, and the good vibes it seems
like they're they're they're coming back now. I mean, I
think to you, for for your second NHL season, how
(20:57):
much more have you grown up, not just technically but
also psychologically since you began in your one.
Speaker 8 (21:02):
Yeah, I think each and every year you kind of
grow and you learn different things. I also think like
you learn things about yourself too through like the tough
times of that you face throughout the year and how
to handle that. So I think, yeah, mentally, I've definitely
overcome a lot of things and I'm just able to
(21:24):
handle a bit better.
Speaker 7 (21:25):
Like if you make a crappy play.
Speaker 8 (21:27):
Or things just aren't going well in the game, you
kind of talk to yourself and tell yourself just to
make some simple plays and your game.
Speaker 7 (21:33):
Will come back to you.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
How much does that come from Dan Bilsma's influence and
where it's not life or death boiled down to just
one single play that you are okay and that you're
free to make a mistake and then bounce back.
Speaker 7 (21:45):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 8 (21:46):
I mean he's big on there's so many I think
one hundred and some thousand plays that happen in a game,
and so like you making one years have to recover
and make it better one the next time.
Speaker 4 (21:57):
Like you said you settled in full NHL season last season,
you spent a hard chunk of the season at a hotel.
If I recall, do you miss room service calls late
at night when you need a little some deep.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
I actually never got rooms. No, I mean it.
Speaker 8 (22:14):
Was nice there because, like I got to know the
valley pretty good. So I think I went back there
the other day. We went to a restaurant right across
the street and I valued my car there and they
recognized me, and so we were talking and just catching up.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
So I thought, you know them on a first name basis.
Now it feels like.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
Inviting them over for Thanksgiving dinner.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
What did getting one win to begin this homestand due
I think for this team mentally, especially with that coming
against a first place team like Vegas.
Speaker 8 (22:45):
Yeah, I mean it's nice to win at home, especially
going down four games.
Speaker 7 (22:50):
You you need some.
Speaker 8 (22:52):
Some confidence, and I think we were able to get
that last night. Obviously, there's some growing pains right now,
and I think we're working through it pretty good now.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Shane Wright told us he felt pretty confident about Jared
McCann scoring the game winning goal last night when he
pounced on that turnover. What did you see from the
bench and how lightly that it was gonna be game
over once he went off on a breakaway.
Speaker 8 (23:12):
I mean, yeah, you put up forty one years, so
you know he's gonna he's gonna score. I thought he
was gonna shoot, but made a pretty nice moved.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
When we go back here and think of what it
means to be settled in. You mentioned the chorus getting
past the whole hotel thing, and you know, Shane Wright's
got his new place. What about you? I mean, what
what steps have you taken that have made you feel
more comfortable? You know, getting into a routine as a
full time NHL player now living away from home and
(23:44):
from a billet, and now you're fully grown up and
doing this now for a living.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, once you get a place and
you get settled in, you started making things yours, it's
easier to go about your day day life. And like
you said, once you get a routine, it's obviously easier
for the mental side of things. Just kind of making
sure that you stay grounded, and I think last year
I wasn't really able to do that because I was
in a hotel and I was always packing on my
(24:09):
bags and stuff, so it was tougher.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
What was the one piece of advice that a coach
from your days as a youth hockey player said that
meant the most to you all the way now into
this period of your life.
Speaker 8 (24:21):
Probably just live in the moment, because I mean, you
only do it for a short amount of time. It's
not like this, this is a career that lasts forever
unless your army yagger, but it's.
Speaker 7 (24:31):
Not a career that last.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
Could you envision playing as long as you're am your yagur?
Speaker 5 (24:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (24:35):
You, I mean you want to and you want to
take care of your body, you know, so that you
can do that, But I mean, obviously it doesn't happen,
and you just kind of have to enjoy every moment
and be grateful for what you have.
Speaker 4 (24:46):
What about car rides home after games, you know, sitting
in the back seat, good game, bad game? What what
sort of messages did you get from your parents that
that live on today, either after a win or after
a loss.
Speaker 8 (24:56):
Yeah, I mean my parents were great da I played
and I don't think I can recall one time he
ever Yeah, I mean I hear kids where their dad's
yell at them.
Speaker 7 (25:07):
That makes you not want to play hockey.
Speaker 8 (25:09):
Yeah, So like my dad never, I can't remember one
time he ever did that. And my parents have always
been super supportive. And he just got it, Like he
played the game, so he just got it. And so
I mean he made it enjoyable and he didn't It
wasn't like he forced me to play, right, Yes, he
kind of made me come above myself and because you
can't really force a kid to want to make it
(25:30):
to the next level. And I think he did a
good job of just kind of directing me in the
right path.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
For me, it was always somebody's somebody's out there working
harder than you.
Speaker 5 (25:39):
That was my dad saying all the time.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
And even now after being done with hockey, it kind
of it fuels my life that was really my question.
Is there something that your dad always kind of whispered
to you after a game. It wasn't yelling, It wasn't
even criticism, which is something to remind you, hey, keep
pushing here.
Speaker 8 (25:57):
Yeah, I mean it's kind of the where like you're
just going out there to prove people wrong. Yeah, because,
like I mean, I've told my story like I'm always
a smaller guy.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
Yep.
Speaker 8 (26:07):
So like it was just kind of like doing the
same thing and just proving people are wrong.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
So once the next time they have mom and dad
into town here for a home game, they were.
Speaker 8 (26:15):
Just here the last home stand. They probably won't be
back till the new year.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
I'd say, Okay, well close enough though, and you're off
to a good start so far, and the good vibes
are back here for this team. With the win, you're
a night and a great event here for today. Riker,
thanks so much, Thank you. All right, that was Ryker
Evans joining us. Big thanks to as well, Shane right
for being along with us here. Mike Benton al Kiniski
to wrap this up once again from Climate Pledge Arena.
I think a few takeaways here from this now. Number one,
(26:41):
I think for me just how important this event was
here for this fan base and for those who don't
get this kind of an opportunity to see these players
up close, interact with them up close. It had great meeting.
I think number two being right down on the bench.
I was there for a few moments, you were on
the isis well. And to see these players interact the
(27:02):
way that they do. They're constantly chirping, they're constantly smiling
at hey. I think to me, are you really a
teammate if you're not chirping your teammate as well? And
I think number three on top of that, Shane Wright,
what a filthy move that he showed off here today.
Speaker 4 (27:19):
The guys go right into pond hockey mode, like all
of a sudden, they're thirteen again and it's a weekend day,
no school and you're on the pond. Now, not everybody
had a chance to do that. I didn't as a kid,
but that's the mode you go into.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
Is.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
Yeah, they want to have some fun, they want to
be a little bit serious, but it's more just about
a relaxing atmosphere. And you know, as far as the
fans go, training camp is one thing a lot of
people come out and see training camp, but you don't
really have the access that you do here the up
and close. The players have their helmets on they didn't
hear today, or wearing ball caps. They're engaging with the fans.
You see the show at the start. So in terms
(27:53):
of getting into the building and the accessue you get,
it's the best ticket in town.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Yeah. How about the job as well that our TV
teammate stood out there John Forslnd, JT Brown, Alison Luke
Ampiper show.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
Yeah, I mean, you know, connecting the whole event at
the ice level. You know, again, fans get a chance
to see them as well, specifically JT and John because
they're usually up with us up at the top.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
So a chance for Johnny Colin play by play, he
was on his a game like he never left last night.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
A chance for John Foresland to experience how cold it
is the benches, and you know, I think JT appreciates that.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
What an event that we had today, Big Banks all
who helped us out, Big Banks as well to our
friends behind the scenes to help put this all together,
Chris Brumwell, Kyle Shohara, Dierra Anderson to help make us
comfortable to help make these players feel comfortable as well, big,
big thanks. But wrapping things up, we all went home
last night with a different feeling and a good feeling
(28:50):
as well, because how often have we talked about two
nothing leads and being able to rally back from leeds
that the other team imposes on you. The Krakens showed
last night that this is now different. And even though
Vegas came right back to tie this game with an
extra attack or goal, there was still another reservoir of
(29:10):
this team had yet to tap into, and they wasted
no time getting after it into overtime.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
Well, there were so many storylines in the game last night,
and you know, I'll start with going down in the
first period because it's happened a lot over the left
last half dozen games where you went uh oh. But
the resilience that the Kraken showed to come back and
battle back to get that thing tied up and go ahead. Obviously,
two big goals by ten to get it tied up,
but that was a big storyline. The way the fourth
(29:37):
line played in general, big storyline Chandler Stevenson playing his
old team, he had a little more pep in his step.
Oliver Bergstrand, who was a healthy scratch last week. He
had a good game, getting to go ahead goals, so
lots of good things coming out of the game, and
then obviously Canner with the overtime winner. You feel good
(29:57):
coming out of that game. But here's the thing, you
got to put it in your pocket and get ready
for Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
And also, by the way, because there is another player
coming along. His name is Daniel Sprong.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
Right right, yeah, So that's that's another storyline. Big announcement
you know prior to the game that Daniel Sprung's coming back,
so he's going to work to earn a spot on
this lineup. So the question is, well, who's out if
if Daniel Sprung's in, and that's unknown at this point.
I think that what that causes is that every player,
mostly the forwards, Daniel Sprung's a forward or winner, is
(30:29):
to push a little bit harder, is to is to
not take any any shifts off, to not listen any reps,
and that just makes for a better hockey team.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
I think we saw plenty of push from the other
night as the crack and knocked off Vegas four to three,
and then coming right back into this building the very
next morning early afternoon with great vibes, happy vibes as well,
and that's certainly permeating the entire day. In a fantastic
skills competition, Team Ruby again over Team Joey twenty to fifteen.
(30:56):
And it looks like that there will be some receipts
on hand here for an off day based on Team
Gruby's win here, so looking forward to it. Looking forward
here to the next home game. By the way, the
Kracking taking on the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second
game of this six game homestand that going down Tuesday
seven o'clock Pacific time, are on air at six point
thirty on the Amerald Queen Casino Cracking Audio the network.
(31:18):
Again our shout out Everett fits you, we miss you,
hope you're doing well. I'm looking forward to having you
back here on Tuesday as well. But al thanks so much.
Now let's go in enjoy the weekend.
Speaker 5 (31:28):
You got it all right.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Berl Koniski Big Banks as well to Shane Wright, to
Riker Evans, I'm Mike Benton for overtime. Enjoy the weekend.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
You're home for the Kraken Sports Radio ninety three point
