Speaker 1 (00:00):
This now past flown off Seattle.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Seattle return home on Sunday to take on the Buffalo Sabers,
looking to rebound from a top loss in Utah on Friday.
Despite some good chances early, it was the Sabers who
took a one nothing lead after the first and extended their.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Advantage to nothing midway through two.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Chandler Stevenson lit the lamp on the power play, giving
the Kraken some life moments later. However, an empty goal
in the final minutes of the third sealed the krakens
fate three to one. Tonight, in the final home game
before the holiday breaks, Seattle welcomes in the cream of
the NHL crop in the Colorado Avalanche, who have dropped

(00:57):
just two games all season in regulation. Good evening, ladies
and gentlemen, Happy holidays. Welcome inside of Climate Pledgerina alongside
al Kaniski, I am ever it fits you. This is
Seattle Crack and Hockey on the Global Credit Union Cracking
Audio Network. You are listening to the pregame show served
up by Frost Brew Corse Late Choose Chill.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
A three to one loss for.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Seattle at home on Sunday against the Buffalo Sabers. The
Cracking getting their power play going once again one for
four on the night or the Crack on the power
play was not enough for Seattle, who still have struggled.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
To find the offense.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
I guess a saving Grayson that game partner Kraken out
shooting Buffalo by.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
A twenty four to twenty three margin.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Now four power play goals or five power play goals
in their last four games, however, not enough for Seattle.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
Yeah, the bottom line is you lost the game, but
that the Cracking were in it again. It was a
tight game. They were two for two on their penalty killed.
They did get that power play goal as you mentioned,
so special teams were checkmark. As far as I'm concerned,
it was the even strength that hurt the crackend. The
other night in that loss, Channel Stevens had an excellent
game and Seattle actually had eleven high danger chances, they

(02:05):
were just not able to finish them at even strength,
and that was the difference.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
You'll listen to a number of players after that game
against Buffalo and overall the last handful of games, cracking
now one seven and one in their last nine, you
can really sense the frustration that this team is so close.
They're not getting blown out every night there every The
effort is there, the identity is there, but the results
have not matched that effort. And going up against a

(02:31):
team here tonight in the Colorado Avalanche, you're going to
need every bit of that effort here again, you absolutely are.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
And if we've heard Lame Lambert talk about playing a
perfect game, and I'm okay with striving for that perfect game,
because you know you're gonna have to play as close
to a perfect game you can here to give yourself
a shot at winning.

Speaker 5 (02:46):
But it's gonna start at your own end.

Speaker 4 (02:48):
You've got to have the defensive structure that he is
inserted into this into this team.

Speaker 5 (02:52):
You've got to have good goaltending. You've got to have
good putt clears.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
You start to limiting those odd man rushes for Colorado,
you limit their goals against it. If you can keep
this game to three or less goals against, it puts
you in a position to win it.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
And on the other side of the red line.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Speaking of the Colorado Avalanche, they are on a historic
pace twenty three to two and seven fifty three points,
first in the NHL overall, Nathan McKinnon first to fifty
fifty five points in just thirty two games.

Speaker 5 (03:21):
The Avs lead the.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
NHL in just about every statistical category. The only area
where they have struggled this season has been on the
power play.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
They are twenty eighth in the NHL on.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
The power play, but first and goals for first, and
goals against first in PK. This is a team that
so far this season has allowed four or more goals
just eight times all year.

Speaker 5 (03:42):
Yeah, and only that too. But they're high at plus minus.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Nathan McKinnon himself as a plus forty, And you think, well,
you know, does that mean his defensive game is fantastic
in addition to his offensive game. No, what it could
mean he's out there for goals against, but he's out
there for a.

Speaker 5 (03:56):
Lot more goals for. And I think that's moore of
the case.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
If you're a player that's got twenty six and twenty
nine through thirty two games. You're gonna eat a couple
of goals, but you know what you're good far outweighs
you're bad.

Mike Betton again with you back by the corpse light
landing in section twenty as we have a lot to
cover here in pregame coming up, beginning with the quest
for offense Chandler Stevenson getting warmer, Plus we'll catch up
with Brandon Montur Jason Botterol as well with some injury updates.
And but look at the Avalanche and what's gearing them
to the best record in the NHL right now and

(07:48):
how to the Kraken find a way to slow them down.
The Kraken coming in twelve, twelve and six in this
two game homestand finale at thirty points or five back
of the cut line in the West, Colorado owning top
record in the entire NHL twenty three two and seven
fifty three points on the year, they're by the way

(08:08):
four zero to one in the last five games. Looking
back to Sunday of Buffalo, first of two straight games
on the road, the Kraken facing a Sabers team where
matters favor in the cracking as far as their home
record against the Sabers, But the tough part in this
one a team battling illness, plus also Jayden Schwartz, Jared
McCann and Bertley Catton out of the lineup due to injuries,

(08:31):
and the Kraken found themselves down to nothing and looking
for anything offensively. And finally, the power play had to
say in the matter.

Speaker 5 (08:40):
Right here, here's.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Vince Dunn left side cracking with the face off. Steven
said left circle shots. Taylor Stevens said on the power
play has put the cracket.

Speaker 5 (08:58):
On the board.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
They trim that deficit in half two one seven thirty
six to play.

Speaker 5 (09:04):
In the second well Matty Pinier's with a faced off win.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
Jordaniblei taps it back defense to the point done down
to Stevenson with a se ice shot from the left side,
short side on Alex Lyon two to one.

Speaker 6 (09:18):
Perhaps an indication special teams are finding daylight. That Stevenson
goal gave him points now in five straight games, but
it was the only source of offense for the entire day.
On the Kranken side they filled three to one to
Buffalo is Alex Lyon at twenty three saves in that
opposite side, Joey to coord tofending for him despite his
efforts with twenty saves on twenty two shots. But about

(09:39):
the special teams the power play, they now scored a
goal by the way for the fourth time last six games,
going seven of twenty two in that span, and the
penalty kill for good measure, killing off both sabers power
play chances, and they have now killed off ten of
the last twelve opposition opportunities. But of course the offense
we talked about this still searching for solutions. It was

(10:02):
eight time this year the Kracking were held to a
goal or less and now they're trying to break out
of a slide of just one win in the past
nine games. So for this evening it's about locking in
for what's worked so far, because defensively the Krakens still
continue to be dialed in for the most part. They
moved up to twelfth in the NHL and fewer shots
allowed at twenty seven. The penalty kill, as we said,

(10:23):
they change their structure. Lane Lambert has more on that later.
Plus goaltending still very strong for best right now in
the NHL five on five team save percentage that's at
nine to two five. Of course, the penalty killed maybe
drops a bit overall for the entire season, but for
the Kracking, when you can stay out of the box,
goaltending certainly has been there a ton this year. For

(10:45):
as far as offense is concerned, the road remains tough.
So for the kracking, how much can they dig deep
right now? Two point four goals a game they're trying
to raise that is right now in the NHL's basement,
And when you factor in Jared mccannon Jayden Schwartz out
of the lineup, it is tough right now because the
two combining for thirteen goals mccam by the way, five
goals in eleven games, which accounts right now for those

(11:08):
two seventeen percent of the entire goal scoring in the
Craken lineup. So the reinforced message for the kracking is
where they're trying to hunt for offense in location. They'll
also potentially get a boost here with Mason Marshmen back
in practice the other day looking like he could begin
here for tonight. He had two goals against Utah in
his previous game and was out due to illness on Sunday.

(11:30):
That here brings us into our conversation with Brandon Montor
about how the Crack and react from Sunday's game, where
energy and emotion were certainly a part of the conversation
and in practice, Montors said that moving on begins with
the right mindset.

Speaker 10 (11:45):
Yeah, I mean, I think again it's it's you know,
going the wrong way right now, it's you know, things
that we don't like. We're obviously losing games. I just
thinking in the nature of just for forgetting about the
past and working kind of towards you know, what we've
done well and try to get that as quick as
you can.

Speaker 6 (12:02):
When you're a team trying to figure out the smooth
pat back offensively, how do you figure the small stuff
when it comes to you know, screens, rebounds, other things
that are making the biggest key and the biggest difference
as far as offense.

Speaker 10 (12:13):
Yeah, I mean, I think we're a team that's not
gonna you know, score those you know, individual like nice,
nice goals. I think we obviously struggle to score goals,
so we got to get in those dirty areas. We're
not doing that nearly enough. And I think obviously this
this season we haven't scored enough, which you know, you
need that to score, you know, you need to to
win the games, and we struggle in that category. But

(12:35):
I think you know, we got players in this you
know locker room that can score goals, can shoot the puck,
and we just got to find ways to you know,
be more desperate, you know, neft front, like you said,
getting screens, getting dirty goals. I think, you know, we
might have a lot of you know, I'm talking to
some of the coaches B and C chances, but we
don't have a lot of A chances and when you
obviously need to get more of those.

Speaker 6 (12:56):
The power play getting a goal the other night. It
seems like matters are gradually turning a corner here for
the units. What's working more when it comes to shop volume.

Speaker 10 (13:04):
Just being aggressive. I think you know again, you know what,
it doesn't go the right way or slow, not necessarily
processing it. You're trying to make the right play, the
cute plays sometimes you know, shoot shooting more.

Speaker 5 (13:18):
Mentality is better, And yeah, that's that's That's what I
could say about.

Speaker 6 (13:23):
That practice on Monday. How'd you feel about it? And
what's getting this team geared from the right direction again?

Speaker 10 (13:29):
Try to again forget about you know, obviously you gotta
work towards what we've been you know, lacking, but you
gotta keep the mentality of just kind of another game.
We got another tough opponent. It's not supposed to be easy,
so you guys should be excited about tonight.

Speaker 6 (13:43):
What's the biggest key with hand when the schedule right now,
being that you're playing so many games and just so
little time.

Speaker 5 (13:47):
Before the holiday break.

Speaker 10 (13:48):
Yeah, recover, you know obviously, when you you have bumps
and bruises, you gotta you know, maintain them. But again,
just stay mentally physically, you know, within the game, and
you know, be ready ago just because there's so many games,
like you said, and you gotta be ready.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
The team coming up on the other side of the
ice is quite the challenge in Colorado. It seems like
as a lot going for him. But you know it's
not the first time that you know, you and these
other guys have faced a team rolling like they are.
So what's the difference in how you defend, first off,
a guy like Nathan McKinnon versus other superstars in this league.

Speaker 10 (14:21):
Yeah, you gotta maintain his speed. Obviously, he's gonna create chances.
He's gonna get his chances, but you gotta limit them
as best you can. Get in his face, play him hard,
get your stick in his lane, you know. But like
a guy that got you got to maintain stay out
of the box. Obviously, they're really huge there. But they're
a heck of a team out there. And you know,
I think for our team, our Josh, play smart, be

(14:41):
in their face, play with speed, and make a challenging
for their top guys. And if we do that, I
think it should be a really good game.

Speaker 6 (14:48):
Finally, at this point of the season, what have you
appreciated about the value of leadership in this room and
especially others underhead coach Land Lambert ere in this first year.

Speaker 10 (14:55):
Yeah, Lan's mcgutt. He's a communicator. He's not obviously happy
we're with that, and he's not going to accept that.
So I think that's you know, good for us to have,
you know, a guy that you know we can lead,
lean on, lead us, you know, to getting us in
the right direction. And again he's positive, but you know
when we need to you know, kicking the uh kicking

(15:16):
the butt, he's he's there to kind of be ready
for us, and obviously it's nice to have.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
Him on our side. Appreciate this, Brandon, thank you, Yeah,
thank you.

Speaker 6 (15:24):
So the crack and looking for a boost from that
mindset against Colorado first of three meetings and after this evening,
these two teams won't need to get until after the
trade deadline. Right back Aaron Seattle on March twelfth. Your
cracking story lines first up again with Chandler Stevenson and
his impact potentially up against Nathan McKinnon. That could be
a big match up to watch. He's got points now

(15:44):
in each of the last five games, up to seventeen
points now third on the Crack and in scoring. Secondly,
Philip Grubauer back in it, and once again can he
give his former team fits against Colorado. He's held his
own five five and one thirteen games, so that doesn't
all include the first round of the twenty twenty three
Stanley Cup playoffs where he was sensational in the seven

(16:06):
game upset. And to win this evening a miss a
turnaround year, would mean his first win since the twenty
second of November that was at Pittsburgh. He's looking forward
to that certainly. And finally, the Krack and defense where
a big test is coming in this trained versus straight
matchup five on five goals the Krack and typer third
fewest allowed in the league with forty nine up against Colorado.

(16:28):
Ninety two goals scored at five on five, that is
most in the NHL last five krack and wins overall,
they've allowed three goals or less. So no Jayden Schwartz,
no Jared mccamb Berkeley Catton or goaltender Matt Murray on
IR and GM. Jason Botterill joined ninety three to three
KJRFM and our friend Ian Furness on Monday for a

(16:48):
look on the return of Schwartz, m McCann and five
more games to go before the holiday break.

Speaker 11 (16:56):
Jane Schwartz is maybe the most underrated player that this
NHL has right now. I mean, and his importance to
your team is is we see it every night now
without him out there?

Speaker 5 (17:05):
Yep.

Speaker 11 (17:05):
Jared McCann as well, huge huge absences right now with
those two guys, specifically how close are they to coming back?
And when I ask you about all these things about
can you add top six guys and all that, how
much of it is just kind of like making sure
you kind of stay steady where you are because when
you get those guys back, that's like two massive roster.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
Editions as well.

Speaker 12 (17:23):
Well, there are two massive roster dishes, and there's still
gonna be a little bit of time before coming back
from that standpoint, but you know, they just they add
so much depth to our organization and to our team.
You know, whenever you have those two guys in the lineup,
they create so much out there. They both in play,
power play, penalty killing, even strength. You know, Jaden's a
you know, we're a team that needs to improve on
our NetFront presence. He's one of our best there. He's

(17:45):
always in and around the crease, creating an havoc out there.
You know, McCann's a player that you saw it in
the game before last week against LA before he left
with an injury, like he can beat it goalie cleanly.
He's got that that heart of a shot from that standpoint.
So we certainly us but put other people in those opportunities,
and we need some of our younger players and our

(18:05):
other players to step up. And you know, when we
get those players back, they'll certainly help us out a lot.
Big stretch coming up before Christmas break. Nice thing the
NHL does, though, They do shut down during the Christmas break,
which is kind of good for a few days.

Speaker 5 (18:17):
So they do do that. But how important are these
next five games?

Speaker 12 (18:20):
Well, look, it's gonna be a game, It's gonna be
a real challenge against Colorado. Obviously, they're the best team
in the league right now by a long shot, and
you talk about parody, they're the one exception stuff for sure,
So it will be a challenge there. And then look,
we have to I think in our first road trip
out east. You know, Lane brought a road warrior mentality.
That's what we'll have to do for the four game

(18:41):
road trip as we go up to Calgary and then
down to California there. So it's going to be imperative
that we find ways to continue to improve our special teams,
continue to find in a little extra goal out there,
and to have success.

Speaker 5 (18:52):
You're leading to Christmas.

(21:50):
We have the crack in an Avalanche coming up in
about a half an hour in time to ask what
are the odds? That's brought to you by the Evergreen
Council on Problem Gambling in your Odds courtesy bet MGM.
The line with Colorado at minus three twenty five and
the over under is six. The pregame show is served
up by Frostcrewed Corps, Light Chews, Chill, Mike Benton with
you in time now for a look at the Avalanche

(22:11):
and they are a challenge and here are your reasons why.
They own the league's top record twenty three to two
and seven lead the NHL in regulation wins five on
five goal ratio goals four goals against. No one's beaten
them at home in regulation yet this year plus they
own the number one PK in the NHL. They are

(22:33):
certainly rolling. They beat Nashville for two last time outs
courtesy goals from Jack Dury, Victor Olivson, Valari Nachushkin and
Sam Gerard. But we learn one thing. You can't let
them get rolling fast. Because they're now up to nine
times scoring a goal in the opening ninety seconds of
a game this season. That is a new franchise record.
And after that win, their head coach Jared Bedner explained

(22:56):
on what they're doing with getting out of the gates
so fast.

Speaker 15 (23:00):
They weren't ready to go focused. I think, you know,
like it's all you always want to try to get
to a good starting at home. I think we're doing
a better job of that, like scoring early anyway. But
I think it's just yeah, it's it's guys getting prepared
and their focus and getting ready to play with some
energy and getting some good looks early on in games.

Speaker 6 (23:21):
So the crack and no, they got to get out
to their own fast start because Colorado's pretty good at it.
They have led fifty four percent of the time this season,
that leads the NHL. They have trailed in games only
seventeen percent of the time, that is lowest in the NHL.
But the one thing about Colorado, they've gone firepower. But
after that it's kind of a drop off because you
have Nathan McKinnon of course, twenty six goals and arguably

(23:44):
a hard Trophy favorite. But then martin Age's fourteen goals
after that are Tory lekin In brock Nelson with twelve,
Cale mccarr with ten, and plus McKinnon and mccar at
times we'll get a full two minutes of power play
time according to Bedner based on their energy level, and
that power is struggling right now, twenty eighth in the
NHL and also lasts in the NHL on the road.

(24:06):
Your Avalanche story lines, first off, containing Nathan McKinnon, the
league's leading score He was NHL First Star of the Month.
He comes in with a streak of five straight games
with a point nine in that total. Second story line
handling Kale mccarr. You ask fans here he is still
getting plenty of attention when he touches the puck and

(24:26):
the krack, and want to keep as much attention on
him As far as defense, he owns six straight games
with a point six in total and thirty eight points
in thirty games, leads all NHL defenseman. Third story line
McKenzie Blackwood in that he was solid recent outing for
him twenty three saves in a six to two win
over Florida. This will be the second time he'll face

(24:47):
the crack and in an Avalanche Jersey, but has seen
them as well previously. Seven games in his career. He

You're listening to Seattle Crack and Hockey on the Kraken
Audio Network.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
Back it's out of climate Plage Arena Cracking wrapping up
their pre holiday home schedule tonight with a meeting against.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
The NHL's best, Colorado Avalanche.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
We're gonna break it down here more in a second,
but first slips bas for a station id on the
Global Credit Union Crackadanio Network. All right, partner Colorado twenty three,

(27:43):
two and seven. They've cooled off a little bit as
of late, seven to one and two in their last
ten games, so they've been struggling a bit as uh,
you know, for Colorado Avalanche purposes.

Speaker 5 (27:54):
Uh, for Seattle.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
We've seen all year long, this team has played good teams. Well,
they've got some big wins against some seemingly unbeatable teams.
What do the Kraken have to do here tonight to
add the Avalanche to that list?

Speaker 5 (28:09):
Well, the first one is slay the goalie matchup. Slay.
It's apelled eigh.

Speaker 4 (28:15):
Colon brings firepower, so the krack and need the expected starter.
Philip Rubauer dialed in, calm and ready to steal a
moment or two big saves at big times. Take the
air out of the avs and crank up the volume
inside this building. One statement save can stuff Colorado's offense
like a Christmas turkey. Secondly, wrap up Nathan McKinnon like

(28:36):
a Christmas present. You're not stopping him, You're annoying him.
You're containing him. Gap control, body position and layers through
the neutral zone. Turn his north south north south rocket
speed into rush hour traffic. Play him tight, play them physical,
and angle him off pucks. If he's thinking instead of flying,
the Kraken are doing something very right. And then third,

(28:58):
special teams without the seasonal stress. This is not the
night for sloppy penalties or power play or a power
play that needs assembly instructions. Stay out of the box,
and when you do get the man advantage, move it quick,
shoot with shoot with purpose, simple, sharp, and slightly ruthless.
Special teams does the trick bottom line get goultening that

(29:19):
makes Colorado frustrated, turn McKinnon's night into a grind and
keep the special teams tidy. Do that and CPA becomes
a very unfriendly holiday holiday stop for the Apps. Think
more ugly sweater party than elegant dinner, Loud, chaotic, and
hard to leave early. When tonight, everyone heads done on
the road with two points, smiling like they just found

(29:40):
an extra present under the tree.

Speaker 1 (29:41):
That was the best. I was always one hidden. How
don't you gonna look over there next to the TV?

Speaker 3 (29:47):
I think there's one over there, you know, Colorado. We
this is the first time in the crack and I'm
seeing Colorado. They'll see him twice more, both after the deadline.
So these two teams could.

Speaker 5 (29:58):
Be wildly different.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
I've gone in.

Speaker 3 (30:01):
I went into the season saying the last matchup of
the year, the last game game eighty two, April sixteenth,
kracking in Colorado potentially could be a playoff implicating matchup,
And I think I'm gonna still stand by that lot
of hockey to go.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
But man, they've gotten off to.

Speaker 5 (30:18):
A hot start.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
Looking at their roster, no weaknesses on this team. Only
one player has an even rating, no minus ratings on
this team. And they just keep on rolling in and
they're very healthy as well.

Speaker 5 (30:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (30:30):
Absolutely, they own the top or the top four positions
on the plus minus. Yeah for the league. For the league,
the top four, So I look that up, but starts
with Nathan McKinnon at the top, but at number one.
But the last two times they've lost in regulation three
two to Boston in November. Tight game, right, low scoring game.
That's what the crackling gotta do. Yeah, they lost in

(30:50):
regulation to the Islanders as well, six to three. Blackwood
goaltender you're gonna see tonight for Colorado. He gave up
five of those six goals and guess Nembers nifty enter
there as well. So this is a go that we're
expecting to see tonight that the Kraken could have some
success against kracking.

Speaker 3 (31:04):
Earlier this year in Winnipeg, beat Winnipeg three nothing. They
came back the very next game at home to beat
the Oilers by a three to two score. They beat
Winnipeg here at home five to three. They beat Toronto
in Toronto four to three in overtime. Game two of
the season. They beat the Vegas Golden Knights by a
two to one score, and then of course, they open
up the season with a three to one win against Anaheim.
I say all that the same those teams are all

(31:26):
now at near the top of their division. They have
been in a playoffs spot, they are amongst the league's
elite this season. So it's been done before and there's
no reason to think that it can't be. Then again,
here's to night. No, this team knows how to play
that way. But as we've talked about, you cannot take
a shift off. You cannot not take a period off
every single shift. You have to know what your job

(31:47):
is and go out and execute.

Speaker 4 (31:48):
And your job might be on the fourth line where
you just need to not hurt the team defensively in
your own end, take advantage of offensive it comes, but
not hurt the team that might put your job or
maybe your Chandler Stevenson or many paniers where you know
you've got to lead some offense out there. So go
out and do your job. You know, don't make any
drastic mistakes. You'll find yourself in the tight game you're
in the third period.

Speaker 3 (32:08):
Finally, al from a player perspective, the Cracking have got
seven eight guys who are sick dealing with whatever has
been going on around the league.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
I'm sure you've had to play sick before. How where
do you find it?

Speaker 3 (32:21):
How do you how do you muster in a in
a sixty minute game against a team like Colorado when
all you want to do is go in the back,
take some night quill and go to bed.

Speaker 4 (32:30):
Yeah, well that's the opposite. It's it's day, well the day, Yeah,
fluids in sleep. Man like like, rest is a weapon,
especially when you're sick, don't I know? So, I'm I'm
sure the guys that are fighting in that battle right
now have been getting a lot of rest. But when
it comes to game time, you've just got to grind
through it.

Speaker 5 (32:49):
Listen.

Speaker 4 (32:49):
You know, if you're buckled over and throwing up, that's different, right,
But if but if you're under the weather and you
just feel grungy and you you don't feel you know,
one hundred percent, you play that through that stuff every
single game.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
So what you're saying is you have to be a gamer.

Speaker 5 (33:02):
Right, You have to be a gamer. Sometuff that would
keep us away, Yeah, doesn't keep these guys away.

Like betting with you back at Climate Plage Arena, Crackin
and Avalanche coming up and the Cracking are trying to
get out of a tough stretch record wise illness and injuries.

Speaker 5 (35:43):
So how do they find solutions?

Speaker 6 (35:44):
Well, heading into this one, Lane Lambert has more in
our conversation crack an Avalanche coming up here and back
now with cracket head coach Lane Lambert and Land. It
seems like that it's that time of the year right
now where more meds are on the menu here to
essentially combat illness. So how valuable first off can your
sport staff to get as many guys back on the
right path, whether it's be a hands on approach or

(36:05):
just their intel as well.

Speaker 22 (36:06):
Yeah, well, you know, obviously, like you said, there's there's illness,
but I think it. You know, there's illness going throughout
the league right and you know you see on a
nightly basis, you know two or three guys from each
team that are you know, out maybe because of illness.
But what you don't see is you know the other
six or eight guys that we had the other night

(36:27):
that we're playing and we're sick, you know, So that
support staff is huge for us in terms of trying
to get these guys healthy as much as possible, do
the right things, and combat it, you know, sort of
be a little bit more proactive than reactive. But certainly
this is the time of year for this kind of
thing right now.

Speaker 6 (36:46):
We often hear more and more of these days that
rest is a weapon, and there's five games here to
play in this next week before the holidays. So to you,
how much has this game changed over the years is
approached to rest time and rest days as well, I.

Speaker 22 (37:00):
Think it's changed a lot, to be honest with you,
which is really kind of strange, because you know, back
in the old days when I was playing, we used
to fly commercial, so it would stay overnight after the game,
get up, go to the airport, go through security, all
that stuff. Now we just jump on a plane and
we're gone, you know, And so I feel like we

(37:21):
even practiced a little bit more back then. But the
schedule right now, the travel, you know, how demanding it
is on the players and each individual game itself. You
have to put everything you have into that. And it's
one thing that you know, I want fans to understand

(37:42):
is that you know they're giving everything they have and
at the end of the game they're spent, and so
the rest ratio is super important. You know, we practiced yesterday,
which was our in between day. You know, who knows
what we're going to do tomorrow, and you know in
San Jose and then again in Anaheim, because we play

(38:04):
so many games that if you don't have energy for
the game, you'd decrease your chances of winning right off the.

Speaker 6 (38:11):
Hop if we can go back to the penalty kill.
On Sunday, they get two of two against Buffalo, which
in theory is good of course for no goals allowed.
But what are you noticing about how the fores and
defensemen are reacting to what's been thrown at them.

Speaker 22 (38:22):
Yeah, they're doing good. We changed it clearly needed to,
you know, and it was to the point where, you know,
you hate to change something on an in between day
and make it a real significant change, But we just
weren't able to grasp the concepts that we wanted to

(38:45):
go with, and so we've had to make some adjustments
to that. And I think those adjustments have put more
onus on our defense and less onus on our forwards.
And so what we've done is we've tried to take
our veteran defensemen and make them have more of the
reads than our young forwards, some guys that haven't even

(39:08):
killed in this league before, or killed very minimally in
this league, and we're continuing to make mistakes, and so
we've had to make that adjustment.

Speaker 6 (39:18):
You must to say, Colorado is rolling right now. And
we talk with Brandon Monteur the other day about Nathan
McKinnon saying that he'll get his chances, but close attention
matters when it comes to defensive covers. So what's the
mindset you want the guys going out with here for tonight?

Speaker 22 (39:31):
Uh? Well, I mean, we obviously have to be aware
of these guys. They're dynamic. You know they will get chances.
We have to give them this few chances as possible.
Our mindset is pay close attention to those guys, don't
give them too much time and space. And in saying that,
that doesn't mean you're backing up. We've got to play.
We've got to play north, we've got to play on

(39:52):
the attack, and you know we don't want to be
on our heels. So this is clearly the best hockey
team in the league by a mile, right, now you
know McKinnon's already plus forty. Usually you know plus forty
wins the plus minus over an eighty two game schedule.

(40:12):
It's mind boggling to me what this team has done
so far with two regulation losses. It's going to be
a great challenge for us and we're looking forward to it.
