Speaker 2 (00:03):

Speaker 3 (00:26):
The Seattle Kracket welcomed in the Buffalo Sabers for their
second meeting in a span of ten days, and for
Seattle It, Jared McCann led the way with the goal
and two helpers, while Adam Larsen, Chandler Stevenson, Jamie Alexiak
and Ryker Evans all contributed two.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Point nights on their way to a six to four
win on Monday.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Today, the Krakens seek their third win in a row
as they welcome in the NHL's best in the Washington Capitals,
who are on a thirteen game point streak and are
riding their second five game winning streak of the season.
Good evening, Ladies and gentlemen, welcome inside of Climate Plaid

Speaker 1 (01:09):
You were listening to the pregame show served up by
Frostbrew Corus. Like Joos chill Al a very.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Similar game for the Cracking against Buffalo on Monday as
it was last Sunday in Western New York.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
With a kraken back and forth with Buffalo. Seattle was
up by a pair.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Buffalo ties the game at three in the second, then
Seattle pulls away seven points from the blue line and
it was an overall solid, complete team performance from Seattle. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
One of the biggest differences that I noticed is that
Seattle didn't dig quite as much of a hole as
they did in Buffalo. Yeah, in that first game, only
going down in that first goal, giving up that first
goal of the game, but then coming back and getting
two in the first period and ending the first frame
up play goal.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
It's been the tail of two halves in the month
of January for the Seattle crack in four two and
zero in their last six games, having outscored teams twenty
three to eighteen in that time.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
They've scored four or more goals four.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Times in their last six compared to their first four
games of the month of January, oh three to zero,
outscored sixteen to nine.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
So the Kracking have been finding ways to win.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Their offense and defense have both improved in their last
six games. And if here the Seattle Kracking, you're still
playing meaningful games. It's still a pretty daunting task to
climb that Western Conference playoff mountain.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
But it is still doable.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
In the Kraken right now, we're getting big wins ahead
of the Winnipeg Jets for tops in the NHL. They're
riding their second five game winning streak of the season.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Eight to zero to three in their last eleven.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
They've outscored teams thirty five to twenty one in that
time as well, and they've allowed two or fewer goals
in five straight and seven of those eleven games.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
Yeah, you and I talking off air a little bit,
this Capitol's team. There's nothing they do blow as seven
on a scale of one to ten. Yeah, they've got
some guys playing nine to ten, but nothing below a seven.
So they're tough to find a cracking As far as
how you were.

York's brand knockdown Stevens.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
It's there, he is.

Speaker 10 (07:17):
He's picking up steam.

Speaker 9 (07:18):
Chandler Stevenson five points last six games, gotta loose puck
bottom right circle and Bury's at right past Deevin Levi.

Speaker 10 (07:27):
With eight fifty four to go in period one, the
Cracking have taken their first lead of the day. It's
two to one.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
Well Channler Stevenson at the start and the finish of
this goal. He was the one that fired the puck
back to Evans at the point.

Speaker 9 (07:39):
That was the first time the Krack and grabbed a
lead in that game, en route to a six to
four win over Buffalo, ending game two of the homestand
on a good note, the Cracking two and zero so
far in this run of four in a row at home,
they have won now four of six, and while goaltender
Joey Decord wasn't letter perfect, the offense this time picked
him up, whereas the shoe was on the other foot

(08:00):
over the previous several days. In total, twelve Kracking players
had a point. Jared mccannon led them with three, Chandler Stevenson,
who scored the goal that you just heard, multi point
game and went fifteen of twenty four in the faceoff circle,
and the offense a big story of this recent good
spell last four wins. The Krack and Havel averaged five

(08:20):
goals per game. That will get put to the test
here this evening as the Capitals bring Alex Ovechkin in
his chase of Wayne Gretzki's all time goals scoring record
into Seattle. But it is more than a one man show.
The Krack And have got a deal with the Capitol's
team with the best record in the league. As Everett
now mentioned, they have won five in a row and defensively,
we'll get to this later. They don't feel they played

(08:42):
well recently, but they're still pretty good on the surface.
Two point four goals allowed per game that is best
in the league. And this matchup first up two against
Washington this season with the krack And looking for their
fourth win in seven tries lifetime third and four by
the way against the Capitols here in Seattle, Washington And
got the upper hand on the Crack and last time
out here March fourteenth of last season, two won the final.

(09:06):
There your Cracking storylines, first off, begin with Joey Decord
set for his one hundredth career NHL game in net Lightly.
If the Kracking get a win tonight, he could be
a big reason why, since he came back from injury
four and one, record nine nine save percentage, and against
the Capitals third start of his career incoming, he is
one and one with a nine to three to nine

(09:27):
save percentage. Second storyline Chandler Stevenson facing his former team
once again, and it's been five years NC stuited up
for the Capitals, but he said this morning, a game
like this still carries plenty of meaning.

Speaker 11 (09:40):
Yeah, I mean that's where everything was started. A couple
familiar guys over there still but not too many anymore.
But yeah, it's always, you know, fun to see those
guys and just kind of brings back memories from when
you were there and.

Speaker 9 (09:58):
The reason why it's fun. First and foremost, he won
a Stanley Cup with them seven years ago. And his
game is starting to pick up over the most recent
stretch ten points in twelve games that is third on
the Kraken. Since the holiday break ended, he's got five
goals in that span. Last four games against the Capitols,
his former team, he's got a goal.

Speaker 10 (10:16):
And three assists.

Speaker 9 (10:17):
Stevenson is going to be back in between former Capital
Andre Berakowski and Oliver b york Strand on the wings
and Stevenson said, his game these days is in a
pretty good spot.

Speaker 11 (10:27):
A little bit of everything. Line's playing better, team's playing better,
some puck cluck with it. It's kind of one of
those stretches. You know, you feel good, confidence is high. Yeah,
it's just things are kind of rolling and it's easy
to kind of play freely when things are going.

Speaker 9 (10:46):
Like that third story line, the first period outlook. The
Kraken have begun to improve on what's been an achilles
heel of them, that being their starts in games. Last
four games of Kraken have emerged with a lead or
a first period tie after twenty and that will be
critical to maintain because the Capitols this season strung all
across the board, but also in period one their goal

(11:07):
differential plus fifty three best in the league. First period
goal differential plus nineteen also best in the league.

Speaker 10 (11:16):
Well, that's there.

Speaker 9 (11:17):
More from the cracking, and Stephen said knows the kind
of player and human he's up against, with a former
teammate and Alex Olvechkin on the cusp of NHL history.

Speaker 11 (11:26):
Always loud, always fun. I think even if he does
break his record, he'll still keep playing just because he
loves being around it so much, and yeah, he just
has fun with it. I think that's, you know why
he's had so much success, is that he just has fun.
His mentality, I think is what kind of has made
him out to be. And obviously the freak athlete as
well obviously has a big part to play with that.

(11:48):
Just how big he is and how well he can move.
That's something that being the type of guy that he
is and how he is every day, you know, something
that I try to do with myself and my mental
side of it. Just have fun with it.

And it begins with what they're calling around these parts

good morning, good afternoon.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
And good night Hadawa.

Speaker 15 (15:47):
Alex Sovatchkin gets goal eight seventy four.

Speaker 9 (15:52):
And that call from John Walton on Capitol's flagship w
JFK one six seven FM. And the guy who's scored
that goal, he is now twenty one away from passing
Wayne Gretzky and becoming the new all time leading goal
scorer in the history of the National Hockey League.

Speaker 10 (16:07):
That's alex Ovedchkin.

Speaker 9 (16:08):
It's apparent also the Caps are becoming overly consumed with
this as a team. Two years ago it seemed as
if the window was closing for contention for them, but
not anymore. They have completely revamped the lineup around the
thirty nine year old Ovechkin and so far working. They
own the top record in the entire NHL last time
by the way of five hundred October fifteenth, in game

(16:29):
two of their season, and their top three scorers and
points Nope, Nott, Ovechkin, Stillon Stroman forty six, Alexei protus
A thirty nine, and Pierre Luke du bois, newcomer here
from the Kings in the offseason trade with thirty eight.
They had won five in a row and are EIGHTHO
and three over the last eleven. Coming off a three
to two win at Edmonton was something you don't see

(16:51):
every day. Corey Perry for the Oilers scored on a
one time around that game ripe aside a tray of
nachos lying on the ice because someone threw food from
the stands and play in TI. It was a footnote,
but a hilarious one, as e coach Spencer Carberry shared
more on the game and the moment.

Speaker 16 (17:07):
I got the blue line camera the nacho throw, so
that was it was actually pretty impressive that they stayed
in the tray as they went for I was, yeah.
I mean, the reality was we didn't have the pocket
nearly as much as we would have liked. Now, you
got to give them credit. I thought they played really well,

(17:28):
and they're obviously one of the top teams in the
NHL puck possession of his own possession wise, and so
they're obviously going to get some opportunities with the amount
of his own possession that they have. But I felt
like we did a really good job in some moments,
especially when it became tight. Third period was our best
period of the game, I think.

Speaker 9 (17:46):
So pardon the cheesy line, but let's just say a
little spice was added in that one. Washington outshot badly
thirty two fourteen, but held the Oilers to just six
shots in the one goal win. As the Capital is
continuing their road trip Vancouver after this, and the trip
ends with games next week in Calgary, and Ottawa storylines
here for the Capitals. First off, Alex Ovechkin's chase Awayne

(18:07):
Gretzky's all time record. He leads the Capitals with twenty
one goals, but getting a bit of a snag just
two in his last eight against the Kraken. Nine points
and six lifetime meetings tops on the Capitols all time.
Second storyline Ridy Glove Charlie Lindgren taking the reins in
net this evening. It will be his first start since
suffering an injury two weeks ago against Montreal, third start

(18:29):
of his career against the Kraken coming up livetime. He's
at two to zero with forty eight saves on fifty shots.

We're back inside of Climate Plager Arena alongside Algonisky I've
ever fitzing Cracking hockey. Coming up the Kraken versus the
Washington Capitals. This is the last first matchup of the
season for Seattle. After today, the Kraken will have played
all thirty one other teams.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
In the National Hockey League.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
Cracking Seeking therefore are the fourth win no third win
in a.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
Row as they are.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
Oh, they're two to zero on this homestand so far
they've been playing well for too and oh in their
last six games.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
But uh, the Washington Capitals.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Coming in the top team in the league going to
be a very tough opponent for Seattle. Al What do
the Kraken have to do to keep pace in this
Western Conference playoff race?

Speaker 4 (21:50):
Well, first of all, there's gonna be a defense first mentality. Okay,
I get it, that's not all I typically say. But
this Capitol team can score themselves out of any problem.
They have the best goal differential in the league at
plus fifty one. If you get three on them, they'll
have no problem getting four, and scoring three against the
Capitols is a big ask as well. They average two
point four to six goals against right now. Secondly, shut

(22:12):
down Novechkin. He averages one point four to seven goals
per game, and when he scores well, you get it.
Get in his face, play him physical, and limit their
power play opportunities, and you limit his scoring ability. And
let's not forget the rule that Joey Decor plays as well.
He's got a big part of this stopping Novechkin as well.
And then third, defensive offense. The crack in the Capitols

(22:34):
Damn is their weakness to account for offensive defensemen jumping
into the rush and competing for offensive opportunities. One of
the strengths of Seattle is its defensive scoring, with twenty
nine goals in the year, second only to Columbus with thirty.
That means montor Dunn Evans all need to be thinking
offensively each and every shift after exiting their d zone,
get pucks to the net, look for one timers and

(22:56):
quick shots to the net front. With seven of the
next nine games at homes, Seattle needs to use that
advantage to climb the standings. If you have a defense
first mentality, shut down Alex Lovechkin and get your defense
involved in the offense, you'll notch in their two points
on your hunt for a playoff spot.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
So a lot has been made about this Capitol's team,
the surprise that they have been this year.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
We mentioned it before.

Speaker 3 (23:18):
A lot of folks felt that the Capitols were going
to be second wildcard. Maybe they'll sneak their way into
a into the third place in the in the division,
or they'd be on the outside looking in seventeenth in
the East. They're now four points clear of Winnipeg for
the President's Trophy as the top team in the NHL overall.
And we've talked about it too. The Capitals do everything

(23:40):
at at least a seven. They do a lot of
things very very well. But they are very good in
every area of the game.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
Yeah, and and one of those pieces that is well
above the seven is Logan Thompson.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
We're not going to see him tonight.

Speaker 4 (23:53):
We're going to see Charlie Linger and but the rest
of the team is part of that seven plus mentality,
including Tom Wilson.

Speaker 1 (23:59):
Yeah know, years.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
Ago you might thought, well, here's a third fourth liner
that's a tough guy that might get some pucks in
off his shooting pads. No, he's top of the roster
or near the top of the roster in scoring for.

Speaker 3 (24:10):
The Seattle Cracking last time out, they put up six
points or six goals for the second time in ten
days on the Buffalo Sabers, the defense combining for seven
points in that game, two goals and five assists. A
lot has been made of the Matty Vaneers Kopolokgo James
Schwartz line. That line had one point in that game
against the Sabers. So we're starting to see some secondary

(24:32):
scoring come alive here for Seattle.

Speaker 1 (24:34):
Yeah, and talking about that in my keys.

Speaker 4 (24:35):
Obviously, we need guys like Vince Dune and Brandon Montour
to be scoring as well. It's been nine games for
Done since he's had a goal, it's been sixteen for Montour,
so both of them getting back into the offense is
really important here tonight. But at the end, I don't
really care who it comes from as long as it's
coming from the blue line.

Speaker 1 (24:51):
And last game it was Larsen in Alexia. You know
who always provides the offense for this group, and you
know who always.

Speaker 3 (24:57):

With Crack and head coach Dan bielesmand The Capitals are
a team that some folks thought they would be battling
for the second wildcard spot, maybe that seventeen spot in
the East, and now they're four points up on Winnipeg
for the President's Trophy in the NHL. What have you
noticed about this Capital's team one of the if not
the biggest surprise in the NHL this season.

Speaker 25 (28:00):
Well, being in these team, you you you know, you
keep a eye kind of on them a little bit
from from a distance, and you see the highlights as
the year goes on of of why they're a good
team and and of course Ovechkin is always there at
the front and center of the highlights of their team.
But it can't go unnoticed the the other guys that

(28:21):
are having good seasons for them. You know, Pierre lukedwas
stepped in there in this Center's of biggest line in
the league with Tom Wilson there and Protus always.

Speaker 5 (28:35):
You know, that's.

Speaker 25 (28:36):
A big bodied line in the offensive zone with being
not only being physical, but just their their skill guys
as well that make them an effective and you know
they're getting great goaltending that can't go unnoticed. You know,
they're getting great goaltending this whole way from their tandem.
You know, Thompson has been having an exceptional season, but

(28:58):
the lingering's right there with him and and just it
now watching them the last couple games a little bit closer. Look,
they're just a well rounded team that keeps coming at
you and you know they play a pretty north simple game.
You know you're gonna see a lot of pucks behind
your defense.
