Speaker 1 (00:01):
Thanks Mike. Yes, we are here with the birthday boy
who promised to talk to us only if I stopped singing.
It's the centennial for the Red Wings here this season.
You've spent the bulk of your NHL career. You debuted
here in Detroit. You were roommates with Steve Weiserman back
in the day. What do you remember about your time
here in Motown and again a team that you're very

(00:22):
familiar with as a player and as a coach now
coming up on one hundred years, just your your memories
of Detroit and your thoughts on this organization that you
played a lot of your NHL career with.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, well, I mean the organization is unbelievable. You know
when when we first came in or when I first
came in here as a young nineteen year old, you know,
it was it was a real eye opener, you know
where you know, there was more people at the at
the opening game, you know, at Joe Louis Arena than

(00:54):
lived in my town in swift Kern, Siskatchewan.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
So you know, you grew up and it's.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Kind of like a real sort of a real, I
guess eye opener. And you know, but I thought the
management team ownership, you know, they had just taken over
the year prior to me and Izermand coming here. They
had a heck of a draft in nineteen eighty three,
getting you know, Joey Kosher, Bob Probert, Peter Klima, you know,

(01:20):
guys that laid the foundation for this hockey team for
years to come. And we're integral parts of their Stanley
cups and so the you know, the management hasn't and
does a great job here. And you know, my time
here was fantastic.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
It was, like I say, it was first couple of
years and first three years in the National Hockey League,
and what more did you want as a as a
nineteen year old kid, you know, your dream had come
true and you just tried to do your best every day.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Between you and Steve Eiserman, who was the cleaner roommate,
who was the one that would clean up after themselves more?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
You know what, I got to tell you that I
think it was me, but I'll tell you.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
That I'm sure we were both horrendous.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
So you know, and I look at my kids and go, like,
you know, clean up your room, you know, and why
can't you be cleaner?

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Than that. I'm pretty sure that I was no better
than that.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
On the road first of four here tonight, following taking
five of six points on your home stand last week,
what went right for your group and what did you make.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Of those three games for Seattle? Uh, you know, I
I liked. I liked a lot about our game. You know,
there are certain.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Pockets in the game obviously that you you know, you're
not maybe happy with, but that's always gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
That's going to be in every game, you know. I
thought for the most.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Part, we defended pretty well, and you know, we found
a way to score some goals, which was nice to see.
We needed to and we need to continue doing.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
That as we move forward.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
And here tonight, you know, against a high octane offensive
hockey team, we've got to defend well.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
I'm gonna say, you guys really flipped the Seattle crack
and can't score goals narrative last week. Offensively, What do
you feel led to the success that you had now
nine goals in your last two games.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Well, I think that you know, it's funny because some
nights they go in and some nights they don't, and
a lot of nights you have the same opportunities, and
you know, so it's not necessarily that you can't. It's
just some nights that they just don't go in or
you don't. And I think that, you know, overall, I

(03:30):
think we did a little better job of capitalizing on
our opportunities obviously, and you know, we did a better
job of having net presence.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
You know, if you look at Adam Marson's goal, Marchman's
in front of the net. We have to continue to
get in.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Front of the goaltender and give ourselves a chance to
have succession by just shooting box. We talked about that,
We talked about shot volume, and we talked about shots
getting through to the net rather than getting blocked or
us taking too long to get them away and somebody
getting a stick on it.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
So, you know, we have to continue do with that narrative.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Moving to tonight, joe with Decord comes off of IR
and Matt Murray not on the trip. Goldening has been
a huge reason for this team's success this season. Could
you share any updates on h Matt Murray and and
then for Joey to Cord if he does come back
in tonight or on this trip, what are you expecting
defensively to help protect him and ease him back in

(04:22):
the game action.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Well, we just have to play, you know, I have
to play solid in front of him, just like we
do any other night. You know, he's gonna help us.
I think he's going to help us with our breakouts
and stuff with the puck movement, you know, but we've
got to just like any other night, we talk about
creating a good environment for our goaltender and try and
keep you know, cry and keep their scoring chances, uh,

(04:45):
you know, at a minimal and certainly high danger ones
at a minimal, you know. And it's gonna be tough tonight,
Like I you know, I've been in this division and
this conference for a long time, and you know it's
it's a hockey team that can create opportunities. And so
we're going to be challenged tonight to you know, to
protect our goaltender, protect our NetFront. And we're going to

(05:08):
have to do that if we want to win the
hockey game tonight.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
The Red Wings had three players with seven or more
shots their last time out against the Rangers. They're a
team that gets a very high volume of shots. What
type of problems do you think this team can present
to your group tonight.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Well, look at you know, they're doing what we talk
about doing, and that's putting pucks on that de and
what that does is, you know, it might not be
the first shot that comes in that's really a scoring chance,
but you know they're looking at seconds and thirds. So
we have to do a good job in front of
our goaltender and certainly we've got to make sure that

(05:46):
we don't give them an opportunity for second chances and
third chances and saying that how do you do that, Well,
you better be prepared to battle. And it's going to
be a lot of one on one battles at our
paint and we've got to get their cold temper and
get their paint as well.
