Speaker 1 (00:00):
This well past off the Seattle.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Welcome to Seattle Crackin Hockey on the Global Credit Union
Cracking Audio Network, brought to you by Coor's Life, Your
Western Washington, Toyota Dealers, Virginia Mason, Franciscan Health, Muckleshoot Casino Resort,

Speaker 3 (00:21):
There is a team coming into Calgary on a heater.
Last time they were here it was the last time
they last in regulation, so is payback on the menu
to keep a hot run even hotter as their captain
gets ready for another milestone. A pleasant and happy Monday
to you wherever you may be, and welcome to Seattle
Cracking Hockey live on the Global Credit Union Cracking Audio Network.

(00:41):
Your pregame show was served up by Frost Fruit Corps,
Light Shoes Chilled Tonight from Scotia Banks saddled home. The
second of three matchups here for the regular season coming
up between the Seattle Kraken and the Calgary Flames. Gott
to have you along, Mike Benton, Alconiski with you, Everett
Fitzhugh's got TV here for this evening and al Tomorrow
will mean the halfway point of the season, So the

(01:02):
Crack and today are a playoff team. We repeat the
Kraken today are a playoff team, and they're gonna get
into a big crunch here as far as this schedule,
no more stretch as far as two days off until February,
and so they're gonna get into this meat of this
here playing the right kind of hockey though at the
right time.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
Well, and depending on what happens in this Capitol's Ducks
game going on right now, Caps up five to three.
A winyard today could put them into that third spot
in the Western Conference as well, So really exciting. But
at the same time, you have to remember a lot
of teams are grouped up right now, so you have
to factor that in.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Some some plenty of separation maybe at play here, and
a long way to go as far as until we
even get to the Olympic break, let alone March, and
of course the playoff season in April. The Cracking coming
in right now. Eighteen fourteen and seven point total lapt
forty three. They beat the Canucks last time out for
to three in a shootout Friday, pushing their streak to
six zero and one in the last seven games, and

(01:57):
tonight they celebrate a big milestone for their captain, Jordan
every due to play in game eleven hundred of his
NHL career.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Yeah, big milestone for him.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
And you know what, he just keeps chugging a line,
leading this team, captaining this team to wins. He's done
so much over this seven game stretch where the cracking
of bad points in seventh straight. He's exactly the kind
of leader they need right now.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Flames aren't too far behind the crackt right now. Matter
of fact, three points back and was very much a
bunched up Western Conference air record eighteen nineteen and four,
losing four to three to Nashville two nights ago, which
was just their second lost last seven games. So they're
back in this playoff race.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Now.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Goaltending a big part of this. Since mid November, nine
h six teams say percentage fit best in the league,
but also at home carrying a twelve six and two record.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
Yeah, there's one more stat I want to I just
want to read because it's so important that tonight you've
got two teams that are surging over their past ten
Seattle six to three and one over their past ten
Caypriy six to four to zero, but over the course
of Seattle seven game points streets, the Cracking have allowed
just one first period goal, fewest of any team in
the league. Over that span, They've got a plus five
goal differential in the first periods. The Cracking black the

(03:05):
Flames the first period in that December eighteenth loss, but
since that point, Calgary has been one of the league's
top scoring teams in the opening period, including two goals
and the loss against the Predators the other night.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Something's got to give tonight, Mikey.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
That defense, that structure is going to be put here
to the tests and what will be the beginning of
the seventh back to back here for the Crack in
this season. They're looking to also go two and oh
on the two game trip and three to zero in
the twenty twenty six calendar year and against the Flames.
The Crack and looking to snap two straight losses in
this series. And res Hurst joins next year to break

(03:38):
this one down. Back in Network Central, the Crack in
the Flames getting closer. This is the Global Credit Union
Cracking Audio Network.

to Friday Nights where the Kraken We're looking to continue
their point streak, but needing a shootout victory to get

(07:57):
the full two points against Vancouver.

Speaker 13 (08:00):
And now that Evanier's two goals last night, snapping a
nine game goal drought the game on his stick left
handed shot with the signal picks up the pup booze
raining down Beniers left circle fourhand in the backhand to
the spot right on Rua.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Bob stoves bang bang.

Speaker 5 (08:25):
Mad evenairs when's it?

Speaker 12 (08:27):
In the shootout, Matt Eveneir's with a silky smooth finish
to secure the dub for Seattle in Vancouver, and the
krack And now have points in seven straight games, with
the record of six to zho to one in that span.
But the last time Seattle was beaten in regulation was
in Calgary versus the Flames on December eighteenth, so hopefully

(08:48):
the krack And can make amends on that loss last month.
Looking like it will be Philip Grubauer tonight as the
crowd as the trend of alternating starts between him and
Joey Decord continues. Gruby's seven to three and one with
a nine to twenty save percentage in a two point
three to two goal against average as he continues an
excellent bounce back season for the German. Today's matchup it's

(09:11):
a second of three against the Flames this season for Seattle,
and as mentioned before, the crack Can lost their first
matchup in Calgary in December. They are five to nine
and two all time against the Pacific Division foe, so
historically a tough one for Seattle, but they are four
to two and one in their last seven against the Flames,
so hopefully that trend continues. Tonight, Let's take a look

(09:31):
at our Cracking storylines, and it's been a season of
streaks for Seattle as they started off hot, going eleven
five and five in their first twenty one games, then
endured a rough patch going one to nine to one
over the next eleven, but they are back on the upswing,
going six to onzho to one in their last seven
since the Mason Marchment trade. It's been a combination of
getting healthy small changes, for example simplifying the penalty kill

(09:54):
that has gotten the Kraken out of their funk. But
one big reason for the current point streak is goaltending,
as both Philip Grubauer and Joey to Court have performed excellently,
making it less of a number one and number two
situation and more of a one A and one B
situation where each goaltender can get adequate rest and the
team could trust whoever's in goal on any given game

(10:16):
day to give them a chance to win. This is
especially effective in back to backs when they're heavy on
the schedule, and right now Seattle is beginning their fourth
straight back to back this evening in Calgary before coming
home to face Boston tomorrow. So good goaltending has been
a massive boost. Another huge boost has been its fourth line.
Jacob Alanson, Ben Myers, and Ryan Winterton have excelled in

(10:39):
their roles. Not even just energy and physicality at this point,
but they do bring a lot of that as well.
They have been shipping it into points as well, which
is a massive boost to get offense from unexpected places
like that. And now with that, let's hear more from
Jared McCann as he tells you what has turned things
around on the Krakens recent run.

Speaker 14 (10:59):
I just think we've, you know, good defensively, We've been
getting good stage from the goaltenders. Both are boys been
playing great and you know we're we're not necessarily creating
more offensively, but we're getting more Grade eight chances. I
feel like we're getting to the inside. You know, our
fourth line there has been been wearing teams down. You know,
they've been kind of I feel like they've been, you know,

(11:20):
probably our best line the last few games here, and
you know we're Obvius gonna need him to take.

Speaker 12 (11:24):
Yeah, Cannor then expanded on what makes that fourth line
so effective?

Speaker 14 (11:28):
Energy? They bring us energy. You know Melli's running around there.
You know, he's a bowling ball out there. Boys boys
love seeing him lay the body.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
So it's nice.

Speaker 14 (11:37):
You know, they're not scared of anybody either, and you
know we we feed off that energy.

Speaker 12 (11:41):
Yeah, it's it's reverberating throughout the entire lineup right now,
which is awesome to see. Now, let's take a look
the injury report and it's slowly but surely getting better
and a shorter injury report at that. Brandon Onto our
Matt Murray are still on IR, as is Jaden Schwartz,
but he was spotted in a regular practice jersey over
the weekend, as all signs point to him nearing a return.

(12:02):
Much more to come on the pregame show served up

I'm Anderson Hurst and don't worry if you were waiting
to all day to hear the sweet velvety pipes of
Mike Benton, You'll still hear him in the play by
play call with al Kiniski coming up soon against the
Calgary Flames. Time now for a look at those Flames,
and we go back to Friday night and the Flames
took on the Nashville Predators at home Anderson.

Speaker 11 (14:38):
And Anderson shoots heady score, Rasmus Anderson rifles the puck
you to the top quarter of the Predator's.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
Net and then chirps the bench on us way by
as the flame.

Speaker 12 (15:00):
I've tied this game at two my fault. That was
actually Saturday night for the Flames against the Nashville Predators
and Rasmus Anderson with one of the three tallies for
Calgary and the contest. But it wouldn't be enough, as
they fell to Nashville at home. So very similar to
the Crack and the Flames have been well hot lately,
with a five and two record since these two teams

(15:20):
last faced each other on December eighteenth. They currently sit
at seventh in the Pacific Division and out of a
playoff spot, but with a crammed up Western Conference, as
Mike mentioned at the top of the show, where three
points separate eight teams that can easily change. Also similar
to Seattle, it's been a team that struggles to put
the puck in the back of the net at times,
ranking twenty seventh in goals per game, but they do

(15:42):
rank eleventh in goals against per game, right below Seattle.
So two teams that are built in a similar way
facing off tonight. Lookout for guys like Nazim Kadri, Jonathan Huberdea,
and Matt Coronado, as they are the main threats to
score and are not afraid to put the puck in
on net, and hopefully Philip Grubauer is up to that challenge.
With that, Let's hear more from Flames head coach Ryan

(16:03):
Hushka as he describes what it's like being in this
competitive of a conference where every team is fighting for
a playoff spot, and so much can change so quickly.

Speaker 17 (16:11):
There's going to be a lot of balancing around, and
that's why it's it's hard, because, hey, you might do
your job one night and then you don't play the
next night, you lose ground to two or three teams.
So that's the challenge in it. Where so many teams
are in it, it makes it difficult to climb up.
And with the start that we had, we don't have
a lot of room to, you know, lose a couple
of games in a rower. We don't have a lot

(16:32):
of room not to be at our very best. So
it makes a night like tonight an important one for.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
Us for sure.

Speaker 12 (16:38):
Just crazy how this season is playing out, especially in
the West, with so many teams so close to each
other in the race. It makes games like this even
more important for both sides as they fight to stay
in the playoff race. Looking like it will be Dustin
Wolf tonight a net for the Flames. He's fourteen fifteen
and two on the season with a nine oh one
save percentage in a two point eighty six goal against average.
He's two to zero to one versus Seattle in his

(17:00):
career with a nine hundred save percentage, with most recent
game being in the last game. These two face each
other back in December, stopping twenty one of twenty three
shots en route to the victory for the Flames. Coming
up next, we head back to Calgary. Has Mike and
now have your keys to the game. You're listening to

Speaker 3 (19:33):
Back with you high at top rings side at Scotia Banks,
saddle Toe Mike Benton, Alkiniski with you. Another back to
back begins this evening here for the Kraken to take
on the Calgary Flames tomorrow. It's back at home against
Boston and the Kraken trying to keep a good run
going further six oh one last seven games and getting
healthier when it look bleak two weeks ago. Here So
in the second and final trip to Calgary, Alconiski has

(19:55):
got the three keys here for this one. I'll take
it away.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Well, let's start with number one.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
A good start on the road in Calgary the Crack
and can't afford to ease into this one like a
tourist finding the right gate at SeaTac. They need to
start on time, finish checks early, and establish pace before
the Flames start feeding off their home crowd. A fast,
physical opening shift or two can quiet the building and
let Seattle dictate how the game is played.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
Secondly, getting the first goal.

Speaker 4 (20:21):
Scoring first in the road is like grabbing the ox
cord in someone else's car. You immediately control the vibe.
The Krack and have done this in each of their
last eight games. The Krack can need to cash in
early and force Calgary to chase the game instead of
settling into their own structure. An early goal also puts
pressure on the Flames defense and goalie, which is always
a beautiful thing in enemy territory. And then third for

(20:43):
the fourth line continues to contribute. The Kraken's fourth line
has been bringing their lunch pail, hard hat and maybe
a little attitude lately, and they need to keep it up.
They've got points in each of the last three games.
Energy shifts, extended ozone time and the occasional greasy goal
can tilt momentum in a building that loves chaos. When
your fourth line is winning shift shifts and wearing teams

(21:05):
down on the road, that's when coaches start smiling and
opponents start losing their focus. So here's the recipe. Start fast,
score first, and let the fourth line be rout. Be
the rowdy table at the company picnic, loud, annoying, and
impossible to ignore. Do those three things and Calgary's crowd
gets quiet real quick, like someone just turned off the jukebox.
The Kraken don't need style points tonight, just substance, sweat,

(21:28):
and maybe a couple of Flames left wondering how this
got away from them.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
That's road hockey, baby.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
You know you always have to ask before you use
the ox cord as well.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
In the car, I tell my kids the exact stat.
If you got it, you control the vibe.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
Oh who's controlling the vibe right now on net? But
Philip Grubauer. And this is I think potentially comeback player
of the year. Stuff ten games against the Flames in
his career, nine to one, seven say percentage, but he's
allowed just one goal each and over his last three starts.
He is playing phenomenal hockey right now.

Speaker 4 (21:57):
Yeah, riding a nine to two oh save percentage right
now two three to two goals against. He is playing confidently,
he's playing like like a number one goaltender should be,
and he's putting pressure on that position that the Joey
decord currently holds.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
Going to be Dustin wolfin neet here for the Calgary
of Flames. And you know who always puts pressure on

Cracking fans, listen all game long for your chance to
win tickets to an upcoming cracking game. Pay attention to
Mike's play of the game during play by play action.
Then when I call for that play of the game
during postgame, call two zero six two eight six nine
five nine five, and if your caller number seven with
the right play the game, you score a pair of
tickets to an upcoming cracking game. Don't miss your shot.

(24:58):
Listen call and win Cracking Flames coming up. But first
let's hear more from Cracking head coach Lane Lambert standing
by here with Mike, Benn Andrews.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
Thank you very much back. You're crackinghead coach Lane Lambert
and Calgary and Lane pretty crazier as far as this
upcoming schedule with nothing as far as the two days
off in between really until this next month. So we
talked to Jared McCann about the value of rest. What
about that part and how these guys manage their bodies
is really going to play a positive effect with weighing
into how this team progresses throughout this next month.

Speaker 8 (25:27):
Well, we're going to have to be smart with that.
I don't anticipate us practicing very much. And you know what,
we're not the only team in the league. We obviously
play the most games, but maybe it's the most games
by a game or two, so everybody's playing a lot.
I don't think there's going to be a lot of
teams in a national hockey league that are going to
be practicing that much. Rest is a weapon and you

(25:48):
have to have energy in order to play the games.
And that's what we're going to look forward to.

Speaker 3 (25:51):
Going going back to Friday at Vancouver in a game
that went right down to the wire, I can't help
but think of the great analogy you made as far
as out where you're lining up a putt in golf,
and it comes down to like a pressure situation. So
when you think about it, for a guy like Matty
ben Ere's to make the move that he made, how
much work has he put into being able to meet

(26:11):
that kind of moment?

Speaker 14 (26:13):
Ah?

Speaker 8 (26:13):
Well, I mean it's Maddy. You know, Maddy relishes those
kind of moments. So the question probably is why hasn't
he gone until then? You know, we uh we felt like,
you know, he could he could do it in that moment,
and he did it in that moment, and you know
it was nice to see our team get a get
a shootout win. And certainly, you know, just in in

(26:37):
terms of his entire game, Mattie relishes, uh, you know,
the moments where they matter, you know, whether it be
three on three in overtime or whether it be uh
you know, five on six when he's out there trying
to protect the lead. You know, he has that ability
and that sort of ice in his veins to do
that kind of thing.

Speaker 3 (26:55):
Is linemate and your captain Jordan Eberley has got a
big night ahead here and play an in career game
number eleven hundreds. So for as long as you have
known him and watched him. What kind of value has
he given this team for the season.

Speaker 8 (27:07):
Well, he's been great. He's been a great leader for us.
I knew him, you know, four years ago, four or
five years ago when I was with him in the Island.
I've seen him grow from that standpoint in a leadership
role here. And you know, hats off to him for
playing eleven hundred games. There's a very small, small, small

(27:31):
percentage of guys at playoff in national hockey legue that
reached that level. So it's a tremendous honor for us
to be able to see it happen, for me to
coach him, and for him to be able to do it.

Speaker 12 (27:44):
That's Lane Lambert. There's more to that conversation. You can
