Speaker 2 (00:25):
This is soul Cal Saturday.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
I'm your host, Twala Sharp, welcoming you to another fantastic show.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I hope your week.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Has been well and you did not get too freaked
out by all of the shaking, all the rattling, all
the rock and rolling from our recent swarm of earthquakes.
Let me tell you, being here, like pretty much all

(00:55):
my life, right, earthquakes have never really bothered me. I've
never really freaked out. I've never really been overly concerned
personally with the quote unquote big One. I've always assumed
that when the big one comes, it will be cataclysmic

(01:18):
and devastating. So all of the prep that we could
possibly do if this actual big one hits, you know,
the things that we've been feeling outside of like say,
if you were in San Francisco during the San Francisco
quake or north Ridge during the north Ridge quake. We

(01:41):
have not been feeling anything close to what this supposed
big One is going to be. You know, we're talking
over a seven, you know, we're talking in the nines,
and at that point, everything is coming down. You know,
I don't care if you think you're building his own
role or whatever. It's coming down. Okay, grounds are gonna

(02:03):
open up. Uh, there will be mass, mass casualties. The
cataclysm will be real if and when the Big One hits.
And after these recent quakes, I think more and more
people are aware or openly acknowledging the need for at

(02:28):
least some preparation for earthquakes, because lots of times, even
while on either later with mo Kelly, you're even here
on so Cal Saturday, you know, I talk about earthquakes,
it's kind of like the response that we get on
the talk back or you know, on emails or whatever.
It's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I got my water, I
got my rations, all right. But you know, not a
lot of people really look at it as something serious

(02:51):
because we haven't really felt what it's like to really
experience a big quake, like something like what happens in
uh At where all of the island is basically destroyed.
You know, everything is shook asunder. And recently, after these

(03:11):
last rash of earthquakes that have hit so Cow, seismatologists
are warning that we are going to be experiencing not
only an increase in earthquakes, but stronger earthquakes all right,
and we haven't yet. You know, after we had that
was like a five point two, you know, the next

(03:33):
big one that we felt was originally a four to seven,
then it was downgraded to a four to four.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Then we recently had a three.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
To two that really hit hard, but you know it
still wasn't you know, run and duck for cover. Its
kind of like, let me look at the doorway, where's
my table at? Okay, I see the table over there.
I don't need to run and get under it. But
experts are now saying that these quakes that we've been having,

(04:02):
they seem to be leading to us having more earthquakes
and stronger earthquakes. So with that, I just want to
make sure that we once again make sure that you
know what you need to be doing just in case
we have an earthquake, you know, and outside of making

(04:26):
sure you and your family have i'd say an after
effects plan, a way that you all have agreed upon
that you're willing to be able to get in touch
with each other, how you are going to be able
to communicate, because there's gonna be a lot of cellular
interruption and things like that. So make sure that you
already have your meeting place together, because like say, between

(04:53):
me my co parent, you know, my son who's now
out of school and getting ready to go to college,
my daughter was in high school. Well, you know, we
kind of have a basic place where we know to
meet and to stay there, and we probably need to
revamp that because you know, now we're even more spread out.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
But you know, and I talked to.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
My mother all the time about you know, us getting
better prepared as far as having supplies, and you know,
even she will chastise me and say, we don't. We
don't have enough water, you know, we don't have enough supplies.
We have some flashlights and things like that. But you know,
so this what I'm saying to you is is for
me as well. It's not this isn't just me wagging

(05:34):
a finger at you like I am captain prep for earthquakes.
But you should make sure that whether you have your
go bag in your car or on you when you're
out and about, or you have your stay home kit,
which is less talked about having a stay home kit,

(05:58):
but definitely it's something that you should need.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
You should have things like medications, extra medications if we can.
I know, you know, I take a lot of medications,
and sometimes I look at some of them and I
think to myself, like like, I don't know if I
can go and get more meds because just you know,
I don't want to have a bunch of meds that
are going to be wearing out. But anytime I leave
the house, I have at least a week's worth of
medicine on me. You should have some spare cash if possible. Uh,

(06:26):
definitely enough water. I believe you should have something like
a gallon of water per person for at least a
seventy two hour period. You should have some food easily accessible,
something that doesn't have to be you know, heated up,
extra phone chargers if you can. And again all this,

(06:49):
you should have at least a good three days worth
because they predicted what you know, in an emergency like
what they are thinking may hit us, it's gonna take
you know, rescuers or whatever at least a good three
days to get to you if need be so just whatever,
Just have three days worth of supplies.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
And if.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
If you don't know if you have everything together, if
you think you do, you want to double check, you
can check out earthquake dot c dot gov. And that
is the one stop shop for earthquake preparedness tips and resources.
And I absolutely think you should go there because when
I went there, I saw how much I don't actually have,

(07:34):
even on my person, even in the car, things that
I know I do not have, and believe it or not,
I think you should download the my Shake app. You
absolutely should download the my Shake app because every one
of these earthquakes that have hit I at least was
given a thirty second head start to kind of like

(07:55):
be prepared. And even in the office, I was able
to say, like, you know, got an earthquake. I mean
because I saw I saw it coming up on the app.
So I think that you should definitely download the app.
The best one for here in So Cal MyShake dot
Berkeley dot edu.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
That is the my Shake app.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
And that one here in Southern California, it registers a
lot of i'd say four and over quacks that we've
been filing, like you know, four point five, four seven
and above and stuff. So those are the ones where
we really need to worry about because almost every day
we're having like you know, a two or three something somewhere,
you know. But you know, we start to get through
those fours load a high fives.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, batten down the houches.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Coming up on the other side, we're going to get
into some of the things that Governor Batman has signed
into law to bring in law and order here in
Southern California. Because here's Batman.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
You're listening to soul Cal Saturday with Tawala Sharp on
demand from KFI A M six forty's got to be.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Me, KFI AM Sexploded Live everywhere on the irt Radio
app and Elsa Gundo, Green Meadows, Sell Beach and Ya Kaifa.
This is soul Cal Saturday. I'm your host, Twalla Sharp,
and I definitely want to let you know the latest

(09:30):
and what Governor Batman is doing as far as rolling
out his expansive new crime bill. But I don't know
where my head is at I forgot we have something
to give away today. We have something to give away
every segment. Oh my god, Yes, we are going to

(09:53):
give away crazy because our friends from the Pinners Conference
and Expo are hooking you up with one day expo
passes and two classes for next Friday or Saturday. These
passes include access to all exhibitors and shopping areas plus

(10:14):
two classes of your choice at the Pinners Conference in
Expo at the Pomona Fairplex next Friday the twenty third
Saturday the twenty fourth. The Pinners Conference is an immersive
and exhilarating event that brings together an incredible array of
creative enthusiasts, DIY, fishonados and expert makers, as well as

(10:35):
the best shopping experience in all of Southern California under
one roof. And we are going to be hooking you
up right now. Let us go to the phones. Because
I didn't give away a pair last segment, so super
Producer Kayla, we will give away two pair right now.
Let's say for caller eight and caller ten. Caller eight,

(11:00):
Caller ten, you are going to win a one day
pair of passes to the Pinners Conference and Expo plus
two classes. Now you have to either go next Friday
or Saturday, the twenty third or the twenty fourth. So
let super Producer Kayla know, but give us a call
right now at eight hundred five too oh one five

(11:22):
three four. That's eight hundred five to oh one kfi
if you want to go two pinners. I see the
phones blowing up, sup Super Producer Kayla, do your thing now.
Governor Batman, seriously, Governor Newsom, it seems he's just been
pushed to the edge and he is taking crime on

(11:45):
with his own two hands, as he has rolled out
and passed some expansive bills to deal with crime and
organize retail theft here in so Cow starting with AB
two three, which allows felony charges on the third theft defense,

(12:05):
aggregates dollars and expands drug diversion programs. AB three two
zero nine, which allows the court to impose a restraining
order from up to two years against a person who
has stolen, vandalized, or committed battery against an employee. You
have AB seventeen seventy nine, which allows prosecutors to charge

(12:29):
several offenses that took place across counties and handled them
in a single court.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Nice.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
We have AB eighteen oh two, which makes permanent the
California Highway Patrol Property Crime Task Force excellent because that
is one of the ways that some of these organized
retail theft rings have been cracked down, especially those bastardly
lego thieves. CHP was all over that and tracking them

(12:57):
down and bringing them to justice. Props to the California
Highway Patrol AB nineteen seventy two, which expands CHP Property
Crime Task Force program to include cargo theft and railroad
police yes. SB nine oh five creates two new wobbler
offenses that can be charged as felonies or misdemeanors. That is,

(13:21):
breaking into a car with the intent to steal and
possessing properties stolen from a car worth at least nine
hundred and fifty dollars with the intent to sell it pastards.
SB twelve forty two give stiffer sentences to people convicted
of setting a fire on a retailer's property to commit
organized theft. Interesting, so you cannot go in there and

(13:44):
set the place on fire to try to get people
to run out, and then still a bunch.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Of stuff you thieven sobs.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
We have SB twelve forty two, which gives stiffer sentences
to people convicted.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
Oh no, no, I said that one. I'm sorry.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
SB four Team sixteen, which creates a sentencing enhancement for selling, exchanging,
or turning for value an item acquired through shoplifting, burglary,
or theft. Where were you, Governor Knewso when my storage
unit was broken into and some thieving, misbe gotten pig born, Oh.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
Lord have mercy.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
I still pray a prayer of death upon the individual
that broke into my storage family for that individual, their
entire family. Hopefully the thief had his family in a
car and drove off a cliff one day on a
family vacation.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
All of you, anyone connected to that thief.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
So I'm really filling some of these bills that Governor
Batman is rolling out to crack down on crime. SB
eleven forty four requires online marketplaces to collect information from
high volume third party sellers, and it's authority to district
attorneys to bring civil actions to enforce violations.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
I e.

Speaker 1 (15:05):
If you went in and stoleed a bunch of stuff
from a shop or from a store or something like that,
and then you go on eBay and you start to
try to pawn this stuff off. Yeah, they can bring
you to justice that way too, And there are a
lot more, so we're gonna get with those.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
On the other side.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
You're listening to soul Cal Saturday with Tawala Sharp on
demand from KFI AM six.

Speaker 4 (15:27):
Forty KFI AM six forty live everywhere on the iHeartRadio
app and Elizabeth Lake, Huntington Park, Your Belinda and Wildemar.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
This is soul Cal Saturday.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
I'm your host, Twala Sharp, and we were taking a
look at some of the laws that Governor Batman is
rolling out. But but, but but we're also going give
away crazy Yes, we have these one day Expo one
day Expo passes to the Pinners Conference and Expo. We

(16:11):
are giving away one day expo passes with two classes
for either next Friday or Saturday. These passes include access
to all exhibitors and shopping areas plus two classes of
your choice. And these classes are fantastic. If you are
on Pinterest and you are into all of the DIY

(16:32):
videos that you see, or if you are a DIY
enthusiast yourself, or you're just a crafter and you want
to take your crafting to the next level. There are
some experts on hand holding classes at the Pinners Conference
and Expo when we broadcast live from there. It is
a fantastic event. It is a family affair. And even

(16:54):
if you do not win passes, I encourage you to
go online and get passes right right now. You can
do so at CA dot Pinnersconference dot com. But right
now we are going to open the phones and we
are going to go with callers number three and callers
number five. Caller three and five, give us a call

(17:17):
at eight hundred five two oh one five three four.
That's eight hundred five to two oh one KFI. If you
want to attend the Pinners Conference at the Pomona of
Fairplex next Friday or Saturday, we have got your one
day passes and two classes waiting for you. Super producer

(17:37):
Kayla is on the phones waiting for your call. It
eight hundred five to zero one five three four. That's
eight hundred five too oh one KFI. Got a shout
out our winners, Ernesto and Lynn. Ernesto and Lynn will
be going to the Pinners Conference.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
Who will be next? Who knows? Maybe it's you.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
Eight hundred five to two oh one five three four.
That's eight hundred five to two oh one k FI.
Now rounding up some of the bills that Governor k
Newsom has been passing to crack down on crime here
in so Cow. SB eleven forty four requires online marketplaces

(18:26):
to con I just sat, I scratched that one off
I was from the last time, okay uh SB nine
eight two eliminates an end date on the crime of
organized retail theft, allowing prosecution to occur indefinitely.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
Now, while property crimes including burglary, motor vehicle theft, and
larceny theft did inch up a bit from twenty nineteen
to twenty twenty two, the numbers have remained on a
slightly downward trend. But but, but, but but the crime
is still happening, and it is still rampant, and something

(19:05):
must be done about it. And I applaud Governor knew
some at least for rolling up his sleeves and getting
out there and doing something about it. I know, we
you know, we chuckle when we see him outside, you know,
cleaning up homeless encampments with his shoveling and his gloves
and all that.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
We're like, we get it.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
You know, you're doing it for the cameras, you're doing
it for the GRAM and all that, But give me
passing some of these bills. This is definitely a step
in the right direction. And he's even going after some
of the field production companies, you know, i e. Some
of these gas stations or whatnot, by seeking to prevent

(19:49):
future fuel shortages and price hikes. In California, Governor knew
Some announced a new proposal that would require oil refineries
to keep a minimum supply of fuel reserves in the
hopes of avoiding future supply shortages and price hikes for consumers.
The governor's plan would direct the California Energy Commission to

(20:10):
require petroleum refineries to follow the new guidelines, and the
governor hopes that the proposal will help to keep the
fuel supply and prices stable even when refineries undergo maintenance. Now,
penalties will be imposed on refineries who fail to follow
these new guidelines, and essentially this would basically keep you know,
some of these gas stations from gouging unnecessarily, you know,

(20:33):
whenever the hell they feel like it.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
And I know, you know, some of the.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Commissioners and business owners and individuals that are, you know,
part of the big banking oil commissions. They're all the
way against this, but yeah, why because they're in the
business of making money. You know, this at least shows
that Governor Newsom is in the business of helping us
save money. And I know you've been wondering. I know

(21:00):
you've been wondering, Dwala, what happened to all of that
talk about the reparations bill. You haven't talked about reparations
in a long time. Well, the latest is that the
Coalition for a Just and Equitable California and others involved

(21:26):
with the Senate Bill fourteen three, which is the reparations bill,
it's still in the It's still it works. You know,
the reparations Bill is still out there. And of all
the recent bills that have gone before the Governor's desk,

(21:46):
many of which ended up on the Senate floor and
went absolutely nowhere, the reparations bill is actually one that
made it through. Of about eight hundred and thirty bills
that were submitted, this is this is one of the
few that made it through. So you know, there there
there's something to be said about there being some movement,

(22:11):
some energy, some will some some wherewithal for this this
you know, reparations bill to be passed. I thought it
was Look, I'm not gonna say I thought it was laughable.
But I thought when it was first proposed and I
knew it had to go before lawmakers and before the

(22:32):
government's des to come through and get signed, I said
to myself, look, there's no way that this is going
to happen, no way in hell. But you know, looks
like it's going to It looks like there is some
appetite for the conversation. And there is especially when they
took you know, direct payments off of the table, and
it really looked to to establish some basic civil rights

(22:58):
that were lost as result of the impact of slavery
here in southern California. I think, look, I think it's fantastic.
You know. I know, probably there's already somebody you know,
hitting me up on the talk back what about countries
in Africa that practice slavery and and what about this?

Speaker 2 (23:17):
And what about that?

Speaker 1 (23:17):
And really I just you know, no, oyster breath, all right,
I delete those talkbacks instantaneously. You know, you hit me
on social media, you're blocked automatically, So don't even waste
your time, you know, just get mad in your car,
get matched yourself, because I'm going to keep talking about
this as long as it's out there and being worked on.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
All right.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
This is KFI AM six forty Live everywhere on the
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (23:43):
You're listening to soul Cal Saturday with Tawala Sharp on
demand from KFI AM six forty.

Speaker 1 (24:11):
Kf I AM six forty Live everywhere on the irt
Radio app in Canola, Mesa, Lomita, Riverside, and Marino Valley.
This is soul Cal Saturday. I am your host, Tula Sharp.
Taking a look now at May's Mayor Bass's val to

(24:32):
not move people around when the Olympics comes to town,
homeless people that is. But before we do, got more
passes to give away. Got a pair of passes to
give away to one lucky winner that would like to
go to the Pinners Conference in Expo on August twenty

(24:53):
third or August twenty fourth at the Pomona Fairplex. Give
us a call right now at eight hundred to zero
one five three four. That's eight hundred five to oh
one five three four. We've got a pair of passes
and two classes. Friday the twenty third or Saturday the
twenty fourth that include access to all exhibitors, shopping and.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
More.

Speaker 1 (25:20):
Really, because this is just everything you want under one roof.
The Penners Conferences is such an amazing collection of creative enthusiasts, DIY, Fishonados,
expert makers, and some of the best shopping that you
will do in southern California, all under one roof. It

(25:40):
is a family affair, and we've got a pair of
passes right now for you to attend. Eight hundred five
to zero one five three four, eight hundred five two
oh one KFI. Looking for caller number twelve. Caller number twelve,
give us a call eight hundred five to oh one,

(26:00):
five three four, eight hundred five to two oh one KFI.
Got a shot out Elaine from Newbury Park and Fie
from Upland they have won passes to go to the
Pinners Conference and expo. Will you let's see give us
a call eight hundred five to two oh one five

(26:21):
three four, eight hundred five to oh one KFI. We
are looking for caller number twelve. And after Mayor Bass's
trip to Paris for the Olympics, she has come back
to California with a bold, bold proclamation. She plans to

(26:45):
not bus homeless people out of LA when the Olympics
comes to town. Now, this happened in the eighty four Olympics. Okay,
that actually happened. They put the unhoused on buses and

(27:06):
sent them all around, you know, to Orange County, Sam Fernando.
They sent individuals all over, even up to Vegas. They
were putting people on buses and saying, hey, Olympics are
coming to town. Okay, we're gonna need you to pick
up and go. Now, one would think that this is
the perfect opportunity to really drill down on the Inside

(27:28):
Safe program or even to really work hand in hand
with some of these motels in the area for housing
some of the unhoused temporarily or even as again part
of the Inside Safe program. But you gotta think for
a lot of these motel owners who stand to really
really benefit financially from what, yeah, people coming into town.

(27:52):
Why because the twenty eight Olympics is going to be
a big deal. So it's not likely many of these
motels will be looking to take, you know, a stipend
from the mayor's office when they could you know, really
just go San Diego Comic Con price gouging and really
come up on some of the influx of people coming

(28:16):
into town because it's not just athletes, it's athletes families
and all that. And everyone's not staying at you know,
the Sheraton. You know, everyone's not staying you know, at
the Lamadren or wherever. You know, people have to stay
at some of these places. And you know, when it
comes to families coming into town, a lot of them
are gonna want to stay at some of these motels.
So I don't know if that's going to be an option.

(28:37):
We shall see. I know that Mayor Bass is steadfast
on her commitment.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
To not just.

Speaker 1 (28:46):
Alleviate the homeless crisis, but to also really work hand
in hand with a lot of these programs that are
in place now in getting individuals off the street. It's
just it's such an uphill battle. And on top of
having to revitalize the metro system and prepare the La
and So Cal infrastructure for the Olympics coming to town,

(29:11):
you know, tackling the homeless crisis. God be with you,
God Be with you, Mary Baths, because this is this
is a lot, you know. I mean, right now you
have the La City Council who has recently voted unanimously
to ban RV parks in so cal or at least

(29:34):
in the Los Angeles area, and this vote there was
no opposition to it. It's just like, basically, LA is
not an RV park. That is basically the sentiment that
the Los Angeles City Council has laid out. And they

(29:54):
have not necessarily come up with a plan to us
part as what to do with some of these RV encampments,
but part of the overall rollout is to limit RV
parking while also providing restrooms, septic waste removal, and help
finding housing and other services in designated areas. So this

(30:18):
isn't a plan that's being rolled out without some foresight.
But it's again, it's an uphill battle, it really really is.
Because while we are quick and by say we, while
we meaning our lawmakers are quick to get out there
with their shovels and cattle trans and just pick people up,

(30:39):
uproot them and move them on, what are you doing,
you know, with these individuals, because they're literally just coming
back the next day. As soon as you clean up
a freeway underpass, holds it down and all that, they're
back the next day. Why because they have literally nowhere
to go.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
Uh huh.

Speaker 1 (30:58):
So you know, I get that Mari Baths doesn't want
to put individuals on buses and send them on, but
I don't know what's what's going to happen. I mean,
you know, hell, even in Long Beach they are using
a Supreme Court grant to pass ruling to clear encampments
of unhoused people. So they're writing step with Governor Newsom.

(31:21):
Look in Sokai, we are fed up with the homeless crisis.
I just don't know if we're fed up enough to
head to the polling places on November fifth and really
pass legislation that's going to ensure ensure that something is
done to actually solve the problem.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
But we shall see.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
Coming up, yeah, coming up, actually, wow, our one fast
coming up at the top of the hour, we have
our salute to small business with Prospectors. Federal Credit Union.
They're going to be joining us to let us know
all about their program, which is a small, nod for
profit local credit union in Diamond Barn, West Covina, wherein
they provide financial services to their community, including the underserved.

(32:07):
They are competing with big banks that are owned by investors,
but they are owned by the members, and they run
and they're run by a volunteer board of directors. And look,
