Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome aboard, Welcome to another Space City Saturday on Sports
Talk seven ninety Dad Matthews Live and local h Town
breakdown of the world that matters to you, the Houston
sports world.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
All these great Houston fans here.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
We love you all. So finish up on that to
do list.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Flute up the cooler, because you can't drink in talk
sports all day if you don't start now bear.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Near the eight.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
This is Space City Saturday's fame. Here's seven nineties Dan Matthews.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
As promised.

Speaker 5 (00:49):
Right now, we head to the phone lines and we're
gonna talk some Texas all knows it well.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
He is Will Matthews.

Speaker 5 (00:55):
He played there, he was a letterman, he's a Texas
sex he's a lifetime Longhorn, all those things. Hopefully I'm
doing it right Longhorn fans, but also too, he is
part of the network as the sideline reporter with Craig
Way and the crew.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
As Will, I mean, we bring you in.

Speaker 5 (01:09):
I gotta believe this is probably the most anticipated season.
I mean, you were there for some really good ones,
but I gotta believe even throughout all of the championship years,
the you know, going to the BCS title game years,
all of those things that Longhorn fans probably have this
one circled a little bit more than those.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Am I wrong on that?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
You know?

Speaker 6 (01:32):
And you can feel the anticipation all across the state
and even all of the SEC schools. I mean, I
think I think it's more anticipated on the Longhorn side
because there is such a progression. Coach start when he
got in, as he built his team five and seven,
eight and five, twelve and two, tended to twelve and two.

Speaker 7 (01:54):
So you watching, so you're watching this progression.

Speaker 6 (01:58):
A lot of times when a coach comes in, you know,
you may not see any progression, or you see a
lot of progression. And everybody doesn't have the ability to
really know when it's time to drink the kool aid.
But I'll tell you what, every Longhorn from from New
York to California and around the world.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Is drinking the kool aid right now.

Speaker 7 (02:17):
And now it's time they really lock in.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
Yeah, no doubt about it. And for good reason too.
I mean, you've got a really good roster coming back.
I mean, of course, some losses that will go through
here during the course of this conversation, but I mean,
you know, just kind of building off of that. I mean,
it kind of feels like that Texas fans are being
told by the program and by people who follow this
program closely, like, Okay, now is the time to believe,

(02:41):
like you can absolutely do it because the recruiting is
matching up with the hype and the anticipation, and the
product on the field is matching up with what they're
going to be facing week in and week out, not
only in the SEC, but also non conference as well.

Speaker 6 (02:55):
That's so true, and right now, it's it's such an
interesting time in college football and where we're going with this.
As you're seeing all these incredible brands migrate towards the
SEC and begin to migrate towards the Big Ten, it
just really starts to create this two conference kind of
college scene. And then you're watching these branch just jumping there.

(03:18):
And then you know, when you're talking about the anticipation
and the excitement, just as Texas is going into the SEC,
thirteen of the last eighteen national championships have been won
by an SEC team, So there's a lot of anticipation.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (03:33):
A couple hours from now, you're going to be hearing
this man along with Craig Way and the crew on
the Long Horn Sports Network right here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety in Houston, You're home of the Texas
Longhorn football and men's basketball as the Horns taken on
Colorado State to open up the twenty twenty four college
football season. Will let's get into some personnel and you know,

(03:53):
this offseason even you know, during fall camp, a little
bit of attrition to one group, in particular the running
back group.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
You LOSEE J. Baxter.

Speaker 5 (04:01):
A lot of people were excited to see what Christian
Clark could do. Both of those guys out of the
fold this season. How's that group shaping up behind Jadan Blue?

Speaker 6 (04:09):
You know from the beginning, the first time I saw
Jayden Blue touch the ball, I knew that he was special.
He came into the University of Texas and really set
under Jon and Rochean, which are Bijon and six pick
to Atlanta Falcons and Rochean up in Chicago, just two
of the best running backs to come into the Longhorn

(04:32):
community in.

Speaker 7 (04:33):
Such a while.

Speaker 6 (04:34):
But Jaden was really patient, I mean even through sitting
on the bench and as well know in an nil world,
like you can get out of there. You can jump
in the portal and head to wherever. But he's really
done it well. I think Longhorn fans are going to
be pleasantly surprised with his ability to manage many's that position,

(04:54):
and with guys like Trey Wisner coming up and just
their quick hit ability, I think the running back room
is gonna be okay. Now, do we want CJ. Maxter
back there, of course we do. We'd love to have
his ability, such a burst of a running back. But
I think Texas has got it sewn up, and I

(05:14):
think we're gonna look and see some really great things later.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Today from Jadi. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
And I mean I know that you've got a close
sye on that offensive line too as well, anchored by
Kelvin Banks Junior there on the left side at left tackle.
But I mean, how much I guess of a relief
is that for you know, Steve Sarkisian in the offensive
coaching staff, where you say, all right, maybe a little
bit more unproven on the running back side of things,

(05:39):
and you know, kind of a little bit of unknowns
with the receiver group, but when it comes to offensive line.
There's a lot of coaches in the country that probably
wouldn't mind having four of their five returning starters, would they?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
They? They really would.

Speaker 6 (05:52):
I mean, and you know, Texas is gonna be in
that in the conversation for the best offensive line in
the country, especially if they can stay healthy. I mean,
even listening to coach start talk outside of that, for
returning starting lineman, it got a whole slew of seven
guys who they feel super comfortable with, who have gotten

(06:14):
the reps, who have done what they're supposed to in
the offseason, and who are ready to play.

Speaker 7 (06:19):
I can't wait to watch.

Speaker 6 (06:20):
Those guys do their thing.

Speaker 7 (06:21):
I mean, they're just itching to get on the field
right now.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Yeah, no doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (06:25):
Again, Will Matthews joined us Long Horn Sports Network. You're
going to be able to hear him as the sideline
reporter today with Craig Way and the crew as the
Horns this afternoon in Austin taking on at Colorado State
to open up the season. Of course, you hear it
right here on Sports Talk seven to ninety one. More
on the offensive side of the ball, actually a couple more,

(06:45):
I lied. Of course, you know quarterback Quinn Yours, he's proven,
but you know, the flip side of that too, Will
I feel like is he's proven that he's also a
guy that misses time during a season. Now that you know,
if this team gets into the twelve team playoff, I
mean we're talking about playing upwards of sixteen seventeen games
this season. Is there a little bit of concern with

(07:05):
them in terms of durability and being able to, you know,
take on the physical nature that this conference is going
to give them week in and week out.

Speaker 7 (07:14):
Well, you know, the.

Speaker 6 (07:14):
SEC is is brutal, and with the playoffs the way
it is at the moment you just said it, sixteen games,
that's an NFL season, Guys have got to train differently.
They have got to have a different mindset because.

Speaker 7 (07:30):
Now it's not about.

Speaker 6 (07:32):
It's about blooming and being ready to go.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
At the right time.

Speaker 6 (07:36):
And what we have seen from yours in the past
is just like you were saying, a couple of games
every year, he's had to sit out. And so where
I think we should be going with this is we're
just so an embarrassment of Riches on the quarterback side
because we've got such strong backup quarterback play with oursch
and with Trey Owens back there we've got two high

(07:59):
power quarterbacks. And with Arch that manning name back there,
you know he is ditching and ready to go.

Speaker 7 (08:05):
But just like Jayden Blue, he's.

Speaker 6 (08:08):
Another guy who is taking his time and has done
it the right way, and he is sitting and waiting
for his time to get ready to be.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
On the field.

Speaker 6 (08:16):
And because of that, I think our quarterback room is
even stronger.

Speaker 7 (08:20):
And God forbid, if Quinn goes down, you know, we
got a.

Speaker 6 (08:23):
Couple ection ones back there who I think can get
the job done.

Speaker 5 (08:26):
And like I said, one more on the offensive side.
We can't stop talking about this twenty twenty fourteen without
mentioning the receiver group.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
I mean, yeah, sure, you know Sark and the crew.

Speaker 5 (08:35):
We're busy in the transfer portal, but I mean, you know, Will,
let's be honest here. You don't just replace Adie Mitchell.
You don't just replace Jordan Whittington. You don't just replace
Savior Worthy. Same team, same thing with j T. Sanders
there at tight end spots. How confident do they feel
in that group and who they were able to bring in?

Speaker 6 (08:54):
You know what I and I was on that train too.
You know, once you get some incredible, incredible receivers like
Jordan Whittington, ad Mitchell, Xavi, your Worthy, JT.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
Sanders.

Speaker 8 (09:07):
You've got that whole.

Speaker 7 (09:08):
Group and they're off in the NFL.

Speaker 6 (09:11):
Great for them, but does that definitely leaves a hole
on the offense. And what coach Stark has been able
to do, I mean in recruiting has been incredible. In
getting to watch the guys and seeing them, especially in
practice and scrimmages. They are moving so fast. They look
like they're ready to play. Now they haven't had those

(09:32):
game reps and they haven't been battle tested, you know,
with them and their relationship with Quinn. But if you're
looking just at the metrics, you've got some incredible guys.
With Golden Bond, Ny Black coming in from Alabama, You've
got these pieces that are coming together. And what we're

(09:53):
really hoping is that that maturation of them becoming that
core group doesn't take very long. And with guys like
Dante Cook.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Who are already there and.

Speaker 6 (10:04):
Who are leading the way, I think that we're going
to have a special wide receiver corps.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
And we're going to have to lean on them a bit,
especially with CJ.

Speaker 8 (10:13):
Baxter.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
At no doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (10:15):
Offensive balance that's what helps you win a conference title.
That's what helps you get into that field of twelve again,
no doubt about. It's Will Matthews joining us. You can
hear him this afternoon right here on your home of
Longhorn Football and Basketball Sports Talk seven to ninety spending
a couple more minutes, says Will. We hadn't talked about
the defensive side of the football just yet, and you know,

(10:38):
we got to start up fronts. I mean, you lose
a couple of really good players who are now going
to be getting paid professionally on Sundays, and Byron Murphy
and also to and Andre Sweats, but it does look like,
I mean, you still have a pretty good group of
guys that are coming back with at least some experience
on the field. You know, how is Pete Kwakowski feeling
about that group up front?

Speaker 6 (10:59):
You know, the rhetoric that's coming from from p K
has been super positive coming out of last year. There
were there were a couple of places that needed to
be looked over, especially like the secondary and losing to
Andre Sweat and UH and team Murph there Uh with
t Sweat and Byron Murphy up front, that leaves an

(11:22):
incredible hole. I mean, Texas did a really great job
in the portal going and and getting and getting.

Speaker 7 (11:31):
A couple of guys to bolster up that front.

Speaker 6 (11:34):
That that front, in that front seven with guys like
Trey Moore on the edge and and Jermaine Lola in
the middle, But that I would test it as a team,
they still got to come together. Coach has said that
there's a lot of great rhetoric and a lot of
great play from camp, but we got to see when

(11:54):
the whistles.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Blown no doubts.

Speaker 5 (11:56):
And I mean linebacker spot Jalen Ford is a pretty
good player that it's no longer around. But I mean
it does seem like they have both inside and outside
pretty good guys that kind of fit the same mold.
I was just talking about the defensive line. I mean, well,
what's the confidence in that group? We all know, you know,
your defense is only as good as you are up
the middle, And I mean, you know what kind of

(12:17):
experience they have there leading that group.

Speaker 6 (12:21):
Well, you know, we've got a sophomore linebacker by the
name of Anthony Hill. Junior Anthony Hill came in last
year alongside of Jalen Ford and really made his presence
known early on as a freshman, especially in Alabama. He
was tasked with spying a mill row from Alabama, and
the guy, even at the young age, was so spot on.

Speaker 7 (12:43):
He's taken on the next ability to be able to
hold down the middle for the University of Texas. Him
and David Binde right there in the middle.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
I really feel like them, together with their experience, should
be a strong force in holding down the middle, keeping
Texas strong up right up the gut.

Speaker 5 (13:02):
Final one for you secondary. I mean, you know, we
know about Michael taff Andrew mccooba able to do some
good things with Tablo, Sweeney and Clemson during his time there.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Now he's in Austin.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
I mean, it kind of goes with the question of
you know, Austin and Texas known as DBU. Is this
a possibility that people are gonna be talking about the
secondary for the Longhorns again, do you know?

Speaker 7 (13:26):
And last year alluded to it a bit early.

Speaker 6 (13:28):
There were some snaff foos, there were some mis protections,
the secondary was young and also dealt with some injuries.
But I really fell with the addition of Andrew mccooba
and also that secondary that's there and the.

Speaker 7 (13:43):
Maturation of many guys like Manny Muhammad that the secondary
is going to be special.

Speaker 6 (13:49):
And also there's a guy who has really been the
spark for the defense, especially on the secondary side. It's
John A.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
Baron.

Speaker 7 (13:56):
Seeing that guy bring his passion to the field.

Speaker 6 (14:00):
I mean even last year he was hurt going into
the Houston game and ended up playing the second half.
And what's the difference on the fourth on the fourth
on the fourth down stop which gave Texas the.

Speaker 7 (14:13):
Ball, stepped them up to win that game.

Speaker 6 (14:15):
The guy has been the spark and I'll tell you
this year, watch for that guy.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
He's going to make the big play in the big moments.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
Well, we'll be hearing you talk about he and the
rest of the Longhorns all season long again here on
Sports Talk seven ninety as the Horns taking on Colorado State.
Coverage gets going one thirty today right here on at
Sports Talk seven ninety he is Will Matthews, sideline reporter
for the Long Horn Sports Network.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Well, have a.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
Great call today, have a great season, and I'm assuming
we're going to be talking to you plenty down the
road as the Longhorn season gets going.

Speaker 7 (14:48):
You know that that is the plan.

Speaker 6 (14:50):
We've all drank the kool aid, and it's time to
see how good the kool aid is. And I know
longhorns are ready and willing, and this time right now
buzzing all.

Speaker 5 (15:01):
For sure, for sure, we look forward to hearing all
of it. Will again appreciate the time in thank you.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
We now return to Face City Saturday, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (15:16):
And tomorrow right here on our iHeart Media family of
stations over on AM nine point fifty kPr C five o'clock,
you're gonna be hearing LSU and USC Hunt Palmer and
the crew gonna be getting you ready. Of course, so
when we don't have astros or rockets, that means you
get LSU Tiger football here on Sports Talk seven ninety

(15:38):
and a man who is part of the crew with
Chris Blair and a company is a sideline reporter, Gordy Rush,
and he joins us now here on Space City Saturday.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
Gordy, you appreciate the time.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
I gotta believe that you know there are a lot
of LSU fans heading out to Vegas that are hoping
for much more than just wins inside Allegiance Stadium.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Are you going to be part of that crew.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
Yeah, I'll be.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Out there and naturally the game, I'm going to go
with the team. A lot of people have ticket off
for Vegas as early as Wednesday. We've got to be
a really tough plane ticket, I know, to get to Vegas.
It was easily over one thousand dollars if you wanted
to go between Wednesday and Wednesday. So yeah, I expect
a lot of purple and gold on the strip.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (16:21):
I mean, I'm assuming probably part of that group that
took off Wednesday had to be Mascona. I've got to
believe T Bob's probably there already as well. Is that accurate?

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Absolutely? I said tea Bob as early as I could,
just so he could, you know, go ahead and just
shock the city. And I'm in there and things at
that point. By by the time I get there with
the team, you know, people who are worn down, it's
not quite as crazy, kind of like Marty grud Day.
It's a little bit after that.

Speaker 5 (16:47):
Saturday and Sunday, there you go, there you go. You
always got to make sure you know how to party.
That's part of what makes everything go around. Let's talk
about this LSU team, and of course, first we got
to start by talking about the most important position on offense,
and that is the quarterback position. Hearing a lot of
good things about Garrett Nesmeyer throughout this fall camp, and

(17:08):
he's got some huge shoes to fill. Jade Daniels played
the position incredibly well. But what have you seen out
of him and what has people excited the most about
Garrett Nelsmeyer this year.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Well, we've seen glimpses of Garrett Nesmyer through the years.
He had to play as a true freshman. He actually
started a game. He came in in the SEC Championship
and Jane Daniels got knocked out of that game against Georgia,
and then he had a fantastic game in the bowl
game last year against Wisconsin, including a ninety plus game

(17:43):
winning drive. I should say that happened that football game. Look,
Garrett Nelsmeyer has an NFL more armed. He's certainly more
of a thrower, and he's not going to run the
football quite the way that Jane Daniels is going to.
He's explosive with his arm. He's going to be able
to make a lot of plays. There's not a throw

(18:04):
that he cannot make. And what's impressive in this day
and age of the transfer portal and nil Garrett Nusmeer
state at LSU when he could have gone the TCU.
He could have gone a lot of places and played
even last year. So I think the Tiger fans know
they have something special on Garrett Osmer.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
And I mean along those same lines, I mean you
lose players like Brian Thomas Junior and Elik Neighbors. Usually
you're not feeling good about the receiver group. It sounds
like Gordy That's not the case with this LSU offense.
I mean, of course, Kirraen Lacy garnering a lot of
the headlines coming into this season, but I mean, how
did they feel about that group end into this game?

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Well, I think you had two great ones as you
mentioned in Neighbors and Brian Thomas Junior that she could
be better at wide receiver from one to eight than
they were a year ago. And also the three dynamic
tight ends. The frontline receivers you mentioned Karen Lacy, who
was a transfer from Ull. He was in the three
guy last year and has been outstanding since. In the

(19:04):
spring football in Paul Camp, LSU added CJ. Daniels, who
had twenty plus touchdowns at Liberty. He is all of
six foot four, real skilled route runner, catches the football
really well. And after that, you could go on and
on with the different varieties that they have. They have
two slot receivers, Aaron Anderson transferred from Alabama two years ago.

(19:29):
Zavion Thomas, and you get ready to hear that names.
Zavion Thomas is a punt returner. He is a slot.
He was all SEC as a freshman at Mississippi State.
He came back home to Louisiana. Both of them undersized
slots that I think can give you a mismatch issue.
And a couple of names also, Shelton Sampson is in

(19:50):
two year two. He was a five star receiver from
Catholic High in bad Rouge. And then I got very
well made start because we're seeing Chris Hilton, who's another
speedchter who played a significant amount of FOOTBA last year.
He's kind of questionable for this game. He was slated
to start. But Kyle Parker is in his second year

(20:12):
at LSU. Didn't play much as a freshman, but has
really had a tremendous camp the ball camp, so plenty
of receivers to go along and they've got three athletic
tight ends that can catch the ball. Of course, Mason
Taylor had a great year as a true freshman. Didn't
see the ball quite as much last year with Jade

(20:32):
running as much as he did, and he's going to
play a nice role this year, a little bit better
fit with Nussmer quarterback.

Speaker 5 (20:39):
And I mean, you know, offensive line. I mean, everybody's
seen the quote now from Will Campbell about going to
Vegas for a fistfight. It sounds like physicality is what
they want to be predicated on. I mean, you know,
how confident are you and others around the program that
this offensive line can bring that element of this offense
back that Gordy, let's be honest, has kind of been

(21:00):
missing these last few years, well.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Been missing, you know, El you let me go back
this offensive line. There were four of them that started
together for three years. And you talk about one red
shirt freshman, a transfer and Fraser from Florida International, and
then two true freshmen and Will Campbell and every Jones
who you're talking about their offensive tackles and right now,

(21:25):
both of them half first round NFL greats. If they
were to go out at the end of this year,
so we've seen them come the whole way, the whole way.
I think the question last year is because of Jane Daniels,
you wanted to spread the football field. You really didn't
want an inline tight end on the field, and there
was such a vertical stretch with the two outstanding receivers

(21:46):
and Thomas and Neighbors, that you wanted to make the
defenses cover the whole football field. And if you backed
up and you had to cover those receivers because you're
scared they were going to beat you, then Daniels simply
just take off. We don't have that this year. And
also that offensive line really wasn't called upon to be

(22:08):
a battering, bruising offensive line because of Daniels. That's not
the case. They return again a lot of people that
have played a lot of football, and they've got a
little nastiness to them. So I think this is one
of the best offensive lines in all of college football.
I think they're excited to show what they can do.

Speaker 5 (22:25):
His voice is the voice of the LSU sideline reporter
on the LSU Sports Radio network also and LSU letterman
on the football field as well. He is Gordy Rush,
and we are talking a little bit of LSU to
a preview the twenty twenty four season here on a
Space City Saturday. You know, Gordy defensively, you know, last

(22:47):
year this was a group that I mean, let's call
it what it is. If you have a capable defense,
last year, we're possibly talking about LSU not only in
the SEC Championship game, but maybe even making it in
the Final four. That's how good they were offensively last year.
You bring in Blake Baker now to run the defense.
Where do you think the strength is going to be
on that side of football this year?

Speaker 2 (23:09):
Well, I think the strength is the linebacking position. And
they return four players I think that could start anywhere
in the SEC. Of course, Harrol Perkins Junior as part
of that group, Greg pen and then the Week's brother
went in West are both fantastic linebackers and so that
they can run that got good size, and to me,

(23:32):
that's the strength of this team. Look, and this was
last year. It was the worst statistical defense in the
history of the school. I don't think Jane Daniels win
win the Heisman Trophy if his defense is a historically
bad simply because he had no choice to get up
there and cut things loose each and every week and

(23:54):
have to play every minute of every football game because
they were in the Big twelve style style shooting out
each and every week, and then you don't see that
that much of the SEC and that's what we had
last year. I play Baker has done a great job
of coming in, I think simplifying things. They went back
to teaching basics, and they're getting this defense to play

(24:16):
aggressive downhill. They're playing fast. I think the strength of
this team if they can get you behind the chains,
or if you're going to be a spread and one
dimensional throwing team, they can get to too. I don't
know if it's a Prana Dan, a Prana package or
a Cheetah one of those third down packages where they

(24:38):
can get those quick, quick defensive ends and linebackers in
a two point stance and get appy. And they do that,
they're able to put Perkins on one end, save on
Jones and perishand or defensive ends that become defensive tackles
and they get really really athletic and they can apply pressure.
And I think that's the strength of this team.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
Football.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
Everybody has a different name for everything, right the NASCAR package,
you know, everybody's got it and it's usually kind of
the same thing.

Speaker 3 (25:07):
You just want to put your own name on it.

Speaker 5 (25:09):
So we'll see if LSU is able to employ that
this season. In the defensive backfield. I mean, it was
another huge storyline this offseason with the overhauling of the
defense bringing back Corey Raymond, and we know what he
means to that group. I mean, DBU was Corey Raymond
of you know, just his recruiting ability and the guys
that he had out there on the field. Do they

(25:31):
feel better about the secondary on both levels this year?

Speaker 2 (25:36):
Much better? Like I think Matt House is an outstanding coach.
It was a DC a year ago. He's now with
the Jacksonville Jaguars. He brought an NFL mentally Unfortunately, you know,
I think they're teaching the NFL the people that really
needed to learn the ABC's first and simplify things. And
what Corey and them have done, they simplify things are
not asking as much as as the defensive backs as

(26:00):
a result. In Faul camp, you haven't seen you know,
you haven't seen the mistakes, you haven't seen the breakdowns.
They've they've been able to execute the scheme and again,
it's been simpler. They've been able to get lined up,
the heads clear, and they've been able to attack and
play the much faster speed.

Speaker 5 (26:18):
Well, I mean, when you couple that with athleticism and speed,
that's a dangerous comminences on the other side, There's no
doubt about it. Gordi Rush again, sidelines on the LSU

to put into. But you mentioned a big mistake that
most people make.

Speaker 12 (29:07):
What is that one of the biggest mistakes people make
is leaving their four to oh one K behind when
they leave their job and another big mistake is rolling

is that By leaving it behind you completely lose control.

Speaker 5 (31:26):
Dan Matthews here with you for about another thirty minutes
or so. Yesterday I was on Next Up with Stan
Norfleet in for Chris Gordy, and we had a chance
to catch up with my good buddy Barrett's lee college
football smothered and covered, as well as his work on
at sirius XM. Good show that he does every weekend
with Tom Logan bull there on at SiriusXM. Plus he

(31:49):
also still does the written word thing over on OutKick
dot Com.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
Had chance to catch up.

Speaker 5 (31:55):
With Barrett's and we started things off with college football
opening on Thursday night in Week one, the Colorado game
was front and center, and of course Deon Sanders. We
of course talked a lot about him during the college
football season, and that's how we started our conversation.

Speaker 14 (32:11):
Yeah, I mean with with Colorado. It's the same exact team,
right because this time last year we were talking about
Jajeis Sanders, Travis Hunter, and Dylan Networks, and now we're
talking about Erris Anders, Travis Hunter and Jimmy Horn. The
offensive line still sucks, the defensive line still sucks, the
in game coaching is still not very great. But you've
got two of the best five to five players.

Speaker 8 (32:32):
In college football. They campell you out of a lot
of issues.

Speaker 14 (32:34):
So yeah, I mean, to me, it's we shouldn't over
react to anything Colorado does. We shouldn't also underreact to
anything Colorado does.

Speaker 8 (32:44):
Jeris Andrews is a superstar.

Speaker 14 (32:46):
Travis Hunter is the best player in college football.

Speaker 8 (32:48):
And so to me, I think it's, you.

Speaker 14 (32:50):
Know, take the bad with the good, put it in
proper perspective, and you know, let's see if Colorado can
get to a bowl game, because ultimately that's the goal,
especially with that schedule.

Speaker 8 (32:59):
You know, that's the goal.

Speaker 14 (33:00):
And if they if they go to a bowl game,
that actually is progress considering how bad that schedule, how
tough that schedule is. So you know, I don't know
if they can get there, honestly after after watching that,
because I mean, Shadur is running for his life and
he's got five dudes in his face.

Speaker 8 (33:15):
And he's making all those throws.

Speaker 14 (33:16):
But eventually that that's going to take a toll on him,
at least you would think. So, you know, it'd be
interesting because now those those expectations are pretty that's a
good North Dakota State football team too, so those expectations
maybe not as as hyped up as they were last
year this time, but certainly that hype train's starting to
crank up again.

Speaker 5 (33:36):
And to your point, Barrett's, I mean, you know, don't
underreact to throwing the football second and eight when the
other team doesn't have any timeouts. You're up by five,
about a minute forty six left in the game. He
stopped the clock, and then of course you give him
the football back with the chance to throw for a
win at So yeah, let's let's not underreact to that.

(33:56):
You know, let's localize it here a little bit. Is
Stanna alluded to Texas opening up their season tomorrow Colorado State.
A lot of people high on this Texas team. How
do you see them shaping out in twenty twenty four?

Speaker 14 (34:09):
I am high on Texas as well. I think that
anybody who's taking Texas lightly in the SEC is doing
a disservice to themselves.

Speaker 8 (34:17):
We saw what Texas can do. We saw that Texas.

Speaker 14 (34:20):
Can win in Alabama in SEC country the way SEC
teams are supposed to win by double digits.

Speaker 8 (34:28):
And that's how Starts built that program.

Speaker 14 (34:30):
And you know, I think moving forward, look, they're going
to win the battle on the offensive line almost all
the time, and that's going to certainly help, you know,
sort of make up for what was it.

Speaker 8 (34:40):
Now it's them running back room.

Speaker 14 (34:41):
So I think Texas in my game by game predictions,
I got them going undefeated in the regular season and
then loves in the SEC championship game and still making
the playoff. I think making the playoffs should be the
bare minimum for that team. You've got one of the
best players in the country in Quinn yours, You've got
a top five fifth along the offensive line, You've got
four guys back there. I think the wide receiving position,

(35:01):
even though it's kind of a point of contention, will
be just fine. You know everyone's talking about is Avon.
I'm not necessarily worried about a Avon. I think you know,
when all a said and done, he's gonna be third,
maybe fourth in terms of wide receiver production because they've
got some dudes in that room too.

Speaker 8 (35:15):
So I think Texas will be fine.

Speaker 14 (35:17):
Now I am Dan, I'm I've been on on board
with the Longhorns for a long time now, and uh,
down here in the in the SEC in Atlanta, that
gets uh, that gets people all riled up this year
for this now it's uh, it's legit, So I built
a monster.

Speaker 15 (35:32):
The Voice of Bear Sale hosts college football smother Than
Covered courtesy of Sirius XM also writes for out Kick,
joining stanon north Fleet, Dan Matthews, and for Gordon and
sticking with the State of Texas in the Southeastern Conference
game of the Weekend. I think for me there too,
Dan would probably say three. But I'm going to uh

(35:56):
this this not Daan travels to Kyle Field my Elkos game. There,
what do you think God asks Ham for the Irish.

Speaker 14 (36:07):
I know that A and M's kind of been sort
of this chic pick now like people are starting to
look at him going, okay, I can see something there.

Speaker 8 (36:16):
I see something there.

Speaker 2 (36:17):
I just.

Speaker 8 (36:19):
I'm against Notre Dame.

Speaker 14 (36:21):
I don't at Notre Dame like Riley Leonard is so
good at quarterback and Notre Dame's got such a good defense.

Speaker 8 (36:27):
And so I think, you know, Mike Elko is the
right guy for the job.

Speaker 14 (36:32):
But I think putting like eight and four that number
on him right now is too much.

Speaker 8 (36:37):
Too fast. Let's just see how he does. Let's just
see how he eases into this, because you know, this
is different than Duke.

Speaker 14 (36:41):
This is a much different animal, and he knows he's
been there as a coordinator.

Speaker 8 (36:44):
But I just think with.

Speaker 14 (36:47):
People are underestimating how good Notre Dame receivers are, including
Jayden Whitehouse.

Speaker 15 (36:52):
Uh.

Speaker 14 (36:52):
And it's it surprises me because usually Notre Dame is
the one that had been magnifying less all over.

Speaker 8 (36:58):
It's so, but I think it will be fine.

Speaker 14 (37:01):
I just don't think we should overreact to to what
happens if they lose. And I think A and M fans,
you know an nfs are known for their patients for sure.

Speaker 5 (37:10):
Yeah, I was gonna say both both of those. Both
of those are in large supply there and Brian College Station. Hey, Barrett,
it can be in the SEC, it could be outside
the SEC. Who's a program that people aren't talking enough
about at least for this season?

Speaker 2 (37:26):
L s U.

Speaker 8 (37:30):
Well, And I'm not saying this, Dany, we're friends. I
don't want to make you say.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
I mean, it definitely doesn't hurt, but go on, please,
if I wanted.

Speaker 14 (37:37):
To, if I wanted to get Dan talking, I'd say
LSU sucked, and then we could yell I'm gonna say.

Speaker 5 (37:42):
Then then I'd say, Barry, it's been nice talking with you.
We'll catch up soon, but.

Speaker 8 (37:48):
We won't because you never come home.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
But no, L s U.

Speaker 14 (37:52):
L s U, there's this whole idea Jayden Daniels is gone,
LSU is gonna suck or whatever.

Speaker 8 (37:59):
Garrett, that's my There is a legit superstar. We hadn't
seen it yet, but the pieces here and there we
know we can play.

Speaker 14 (38:09):
Losing Malik Neighbors is not that big of a deal
because Kyri and Lady and they've got.

Speaker 8 (38:15):
Some other dudes. How many people knew Elite Neighbors this
time last year?

Speaker 4 (38:20):
It's a fair points.

Speaker 8 (38:24):
Yeah, So I think they'll be fine. But if you
returned six starting offensive lineman six, legitimately that's the number.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
You're gonna be all right.

Speaker 14 (38:36):
And they're going up against the USC team that's just
uttered trash defensively. And I know LSU was utter trash
defensively last year too, but I think they fixed that
problem by bringing in Blake Baker to coordinate that defense.

Speaker 8 (38:46):
But you know, L s U.

Speaker 14 (38:49):
A they're just gonna be good in general, but be
that schedule sets up really well for them to make
a run.

Speaker 4 (38:55):
All right, we'll get you high on this one.

Speaker 15 (38:56):
Bears Lee kind of enough to join us here on
next up for another cup seconds here. The other game
of interest for me national Championship implications, of course, Georgia
Clemson going face off.

Speaker 4 (39:08):
In a pretty much a neutral site game.

Speaker 15 (39:10):
We know that the Bulldogs are gonna be represented, having
won two of the last three national championships.

Speaker 4 (39:16):
Do you have Georgia as your national champion?

Speaker 8 (39:19):
I do. I have Georgia as a national champion.

Speaker 14 (39:22):
I think they lose, Like I said, I think they
lose in the regular season in Texas to get their
revenge in Atlanta.

Speaker 8 (39:27):
And I actually have Georgia.

Speaker 14 (39:28):
Being Texas the third time in the National champions Game.

Speaker 8 (39:33):
I didn't plan it that way, that's the way it
worked out. But yeah, I think Georgia.

Speaker 14 (39:38):
I don't think they're gonna be a close game this
weekend in Atlanta.

Speaker 8 (39:40):
I think that I'll be there. I think it's gonna
be I Thinkson's being overlooked a little bit.

Speaker 4 (39:44):
I agree with.

Speaker 14 (39:44):
That, But yeah, I mean they're gonna have a good
offensive line. And I don't know, I still believe in
Kate Clubnick.

Speaker 8 (39:50):
I'm not really sure why at times, but I really do.
And so, but yeah, I think Georgia.

Speaker 14 (39:55):
Georgia win the National Championship two deep, too talented and
you know party system an incredible careg.

Speaker 15 (40:02):
He's definitely built the bohema there in Athens. Appreciate Barrett
