Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome aboard, Welcome to another Space City Saturday on Sports
Talk seven ninety Dad Matthews Live and local h Town
breakdown of the world that matters to you, the Houston
sports world.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
All these great Houston fans here.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
We love you all.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
So finish up on that to do list, slot up
the cooler, because you can't drink in talk sports all
day if you don't start.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Now bear me the eight. This is Space City Saturday.
That's insane. Here's seven nineties Dan Matthews.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
Well, we go from teeing them up, shooting them up
or spooling them up to teeing them up. And I'm
also to shooting them up. And also that's about all
I've gotten. I didn't really think the second part all
the way through. But anyway, appreciate Doug Pike as always
great to be able to catch up with him a
little bit. And of course too, we're getting into that

(01:09):
season two as well. I mean, you know some of
you about to start going after the deer. I mean fishing.
We can do that year round, Hoggs. God, you can
just take care of them basically whenever you want, so,
I guess I'm kind of talking like a guy that
knows what he's talking about right there.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Huh.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
Although I'm sure some of you probably on the phone
lines are hitting me up on Twitter at Dan Matthews
hou which the phone line of course someone three two
one two five seven ninety. It's not gonna be in
anything goes you know, Friday, like the Matt Thomas Show.
So if you call in ask me any hunting, fishing, wildlife,
any of that type of stuff, I gotta be honest
with you. I'm probably not even gonna know. You're talking

(01:45):
to a guy who fell down his stairs last night.
So just a quick on that. So last night I
do rockets wrap did it from the house and do
the show usually from the office we have at the
house upstairs, so that I did the show. Not a
lot of fun all of that rockets went last night
one twenty eight one O way. We'll get into a

(02:06):
little bit of rockets as the show goes along.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
But of course I'm at home, right, most of us
were at home.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
You either wear some sort of like slippers or something
like that house shoes. Some of you even go the
crocs variety, any of those things. Well I just went
to just the straight up socks and so got that
walking down the stairs and socked up feet a hardwood
staircase right there, and we had an unwelcome visitor otherwise

(02:33):
known as a roach right there.

Speaker 5 (02:35):
And I tried to step over said roach.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
Because I was gonna go get something to take care
of again our unwelcome visitor. And as I did that,
I hit the front of the step and just went
shoe soles over you know what's down about five steps
right there, banged up the lower back. So I've got
a nice little black and blue right there on the
lower back on the right side.

Speaker 5 (03:00):
And you know, it's all good.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
Took care of the unwelcome visitor though, was able to
compose myself, and I know that the next part of
it is going to be all right.

Speaker 6 (03:08):
Dan.

Speaker 5 (03:08):
You know, it's been dinnertime, it's Friday night. How much.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Not a single of the hard stuff, not a single
of the stuff that comes in the light variety or
any other not the ferminted grape juice, none of it.
You know what I had my system, Melvin Brown, I
had iced tea from a chicken tender spot that we
grabbed dinner from.

Speaker 5 (03:29):
So that's all I had.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
Maybe it was maybe it was just a little bit
of messing with you know, hey, what should I do here?
How should I handle this? Because again, you know, basically barefoot,
I don't want to take care of the unwelcome visitor
otherwise known as a roach. Didn't want to take care
and I know what some of you out there might
be seeing as well. Well, Dan, why do you have
I mean, can we all agree that it's still in
the high eighties, low nineties humid, and I'm on the

(03:54):
north side of town where there's a lot of trees around,
so you can do everything possible to be able to
keep said unwelcome visitors out of your house. But guess what,
they're gonna find their way in. So they did, and
I almost kind of think before eventually I took care
of our unwelcome visitor. I rejected them from the premises,
as I threw out on Twitter that I gotta believe

(04:15):
that the roach was probably like, what the hell just
happened to you? So anyway, life well lived by you.
But I don't want you in my house. And I'll
let you know that I didn't want you in my house.
So there you go, not playing hurt. We're all good.
It's going to be a good two hour show for
you here today.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
Bottom of this hour. You know how I like to
do things.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
I like to be able to let you hear from
some of the great guests we had this week, of course,
with the Texans taking on the Colts tomorrow, and you know,
I almost kind of get a sense from some of you,
and you can also weigh in on the phone lines
again seven one, three, two five, seven ninety, you almost
get a sense from some of you. You're kind of
treating tomorrow like a must win game, like if the

(04:56):
Texans lose this game, fall to five and three, which
they have the same record as the Colts, and by
virtue of them both being tied at the same record,
and also to splitting this season series, that it would
come down to other tiebreakers at the end of the season,
because you're not going to unlike last year obviously, with
this being the second and final meeting of the year.

(05:18):
Like last year, you knew exactly what the scenario was
when you were up in Indianapolis for that final game
of the season. You win, you are AFC South champs.
You're going like there is no if fans or butts
about it. You're going You're playing in the postseason, and
if you lose, then obviously it's going to be the Colts.
And you took care of business. You went up there

(05:39):
the beginning of the season. You had to sweat it out.
You had some really good things happened in that game,
and you also had some throws downfield that you're like,
oh my gosh, how did they get behind our defensive backs.

Speaker 5 (05:49):
That's not what we want to see.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
And you had to be able to get some huge
third down conversions at the end of the game. Joe
Mixon was massive for you, and you've got to believe
that they are going to have a chance to try
to exact some revenge tomorrow. Jonathan Taylor sounds like he's
going to be on the field for the Colts. The
Forrest Buckner might be out there. I think I haven't

(06:11):
seen exactly with him. But still it is a chance
for the Texans to be able to move to six
and two on the season, and also as they get
into a really tough stretch of the schedule that they
have for the rest of the year. And this is
something that I don't think a lot of us necessarily
didn't think was going to be on the horizon. For

(06:32):
this team because you knew exactly how tough this schedule
would be this year. You knew what the first play schedule,
that you would be playing a lot tougher opponents, but
also too as well. I mean, you know, after this,
you've got to go on a short week up to
the metal Lands, take on the Jets, and then you
get a really good Detroit Lions team in town. And
then on Monday Night Football the week after that, a

(06:55):
couple of about ten days before Thanksgiving, you get the
Cowboys up there in our so that'll be a tough
team in its own right. But then you get a
little bit of a break with back to backs against
the Titans at home and then the Jags. Then finally
the bye week, which I gotta tell you this year
it's funny, you know. I just the other day it

(07:16):
dawned on me and I was like, hey, when does
the Texans have a buye? And if you're looking at
a team that wants to be playing their best football
later on in the season, it's coming at a great
time because it's going to be the second week of
December is when you're going to get that. So then
after that you come out of it you play the Dolphins,
play the Chiefs, you play the Ravens, and then you

(07:36):
finish up the regular season on the road at Tennessee,
and hopefully at that point you're talking about going into
that game at Tennessee as a team that might have
an opportunity to be one of the top two teams
in the AFC. I know that the Baltimore Ravens might
have something to say about that. You're gonna have to
try to hold them off. You're gonna have a chance
to be able to beat them here on your home

(07:57):
turf on Christmas night. So I mean, you know, all
of those things kind of come into place, so you
know what the road is for the Texans.

Speaker 5 (08:04):
And that's the other part of it as well.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
I think that has been a huge part of this
season is while it is a five and two, kind
of feels like for some of you it's a soft
five and two. I know that Lalima and Salisbury talking
about this the other day, but to me, I don't
look at things that way. It's five and two is
five and two, and you're not going to try to
tell me that you know, oh well this buts you know,
candy and nuts saw these different types of things. No,

(08:27):
you won five football games, you lost two games. So
that's the way this season has gone. And I know
that some of you also too, who throw out the
you know, hard and softness of a season and how
you've played so far to this point. Is I understand
that the argument is going to be, well, look at
the two teams you lost to. You lost a two
playoff caliber teams. And even though it does look like

(08:48):
the Vikings are kind of starting to market correct a
little bit, and Green Bay is a really good team
as well, as you know, now we have an opportunity
to be able to see if the Texans can bounce
back that loss, and we'll talk about that a little
bit as the show goes along. The offensive line obviously
has been a huge topic conversation. Just you know, really,

(09:08):
I would say, meh so far this part of the season.
Maybe kind of a straight C is the letter grade
that you'd probably give that group because at times when
the ball has been in play, they've done some really
good things, but also too as well, when they have
been going up to the line of scrimmage, they've had

(09:28):
some pre snap penalties that have been issues for this team,
and also other things when the ball is in play
as well, and we'll let you hear from Bobby Slowick
as well as c. J. Stroud Demico Ryans as the
show goes along on that as well. Texans also this
week adding Devin White to their linebacker group, and I

(09:48):
think that, you know, this kind of goes many different
ways that you can kind of think about this. I mean,
number one, it kind of makes me wonder just how
close Christian Harris is to coming back to play. But
I also take them more positive approach to it a
little bit. I think that it is a situation with
the Texans of saying, there's a guy that's been at
times an All Pro Pro Bowl caliber player and it

(10:11):
was a top five pick coming out of college. Still
a lot of talent that you've got to believe is
still there. Maybe it just didn't work out in Philadelphia.
I mean, where else did we find a situation like that?
Oh yeah, Derek Barnett and he came here and he
found a home. So maybe it's a chance that you're
able to add a guy that, at the very worst
is a good depth piece for you there at the

(10:32):
linebacker spots. And as you've heard WEX talk about a lot.
This is a team that does not play a ton
of linebackers two at most, so you know that's somebody
that could be able to step in, especially when you
get to Aziz Alshaier, which I mean at this point,
I've got to wonder that it can't necessarily be something
that they feel like is going to be a week's
two about a month scenario of trying to heal up front.

(10:56):
If that were the case, then they would have already
put him on IR and of course then we absolutely
know why Devin White is here, but also too as well,
I just think that it is something that it's going
to go every single week of Hey, try to find
out can he go this week?

Speaker 5 (11:09):
Can he play? Okay, no he can't.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
So we've got to be able to try to run
with hopefully Henry Totoe. And also to last week, he
got good stuff out of Nevin Hewitt and Jay Canson,
So that's something to keep an eye on. But definitely
looking forward to seeing what Devin White adds this team.
Some good news though on the injury front for the Texans.
Looks like Kamori last are going to be a go

(11:31):
tomorrow in that one, although you had to kind of
try to count on D'Angelo Ross as well as Eric
Murray to be able to spell you for some tough
spots there in the secondary. Of course, Jimmy Ward still
out as well, so the Texans tomorrow looks like it's
going to be only Alshaire and also Ward missing the

(11:54):
game as full participation and not even listed in terms
of what they're going to try to get out of
Camari last tomorrow, as like I said, he was full
participation on Friday, so not even given a designation for
the game, So gonna be a lasser out there, and
everybody else as well, looks like they are good to go.

(12:15):
Robert Woods sounds like he's going to be back as well,
so that's good to see from him. So the Texans
starting to heal up just a little bit, and so
we get a closer in to the middle part of
the season. We'll get into some college football as the
show goes along as well. Got a huge one in
College Station tonight. Me and Gordy will be in the

(12:35):
building looking forward to it. LSU taking on at Texas
A and M basically a pickam game at this point, so
we'll get into that a little bit later on in
the show second hour is when we will start talking
a little bit about that, just a slight amount of
Rockets conversation. I just don't think there's really a ton
that interests you out there right now. There are two
games into the season and something you know too as well.

(12:58):
You know, I was talking about with Josh c yesterday
before we started to fire up the pregame show, and
we love Rocket season around here. Don't get what I'm
about to say, you know, don't get it twisted. I'm
not trying to, you know, say that I don't enjoy
basketball season.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
Far from it.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
Love it And as a matter of fact, watched every
minute that I could last night when I got home
and listen to the rest of it when I was
in the car on the way back to Matt Thomas
and Adam Clanton. But I almost wonder if it would
be better of a collective effort from both the NCUBA
and the NBA to say, why don't we start the
season in December? Because I just kind of look at

(13:36):
it like today tonight, for example, the Rockets are playing,
You've got LSU and A and M on. You know
that that's going to draw a huge amount of eyes
and ears to that game you've got, and you know,
earlier today you got Texas taken on Vanderbilt. Like, you
just got so many different types of distractions that can
possibly be in your way from football season. And I

(13:57):
know that many of you kind of look at the
NBA season as it starts after Christmas Day, and of course,
you know, we get the huge Christmas Day, which of
course the NFL finally realized, Hey, you know there's interest
in the NFL or the NBA on Christmas Day, but
there's not a ton we can really kind of take
some of those people that might be casual at best viewers,

(14:18):
because I think the NBA is a lot like the
way that Major League Baseball is. It's your own individual
interest is what controls you watching the games, because I've
said in numerous times, I just don't think that there
is a ton of star power in the league right
now that compels you to want to watch the games.
I mean, for the time, even though we might have
hated the heatles of Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade,

(14:41):
we still watched because it was star power, right. I mean,
in the eighties and nineties, we watched because of Jordan,
We watched because of Bird. We watched of course here
because of the Dream and you know, you just take
you know, Charles Barkley, whoever it might have been, like,
you had numerous different players that interest you. And also too,
we're incredibly good. So that was another part that was

(15:02):
also a fun storyline of all of it. I mean,
even though neither of us and most of us listening
to this or not from Indiana or New York, we
were still paying attention to the Pacers and the Knicks
and the playoffs because of Reggie Miller against Spike Lee
and the fights and everything that we had. Like it
just there were storylines that actually were interesting. I just
don't think the league has that right now. And it's

(15:24):
something that talked about a little bit with Doug Pike
that I just think that it's a situation of you've
got players that come into the league and they're getting
their developmental reps in the league, where in the past
we had guys that were coming into the league and
making immediate impacts that were two three four year players
in college and had their game developed by that time,

(15:45):
Whereas I mean, you've got a lot of guys coming
in now and it's you know, oh, hey, they're going
to take their lumps. Well, I don't want to see
somebody take their lumps and be playing for about three
or four years and then finally it's say, oh, okay, hey, hey,
this is the player it's supposed to be. You know,
he's supposed to be. Well, then aren't you doing that
at the college level. Why aren't you doing that at
the G league level anywhere else? It's just I just

(16:05):
I think that. And it's also too Look, I mean,
just look at the NBA draft. How many guys are
drafted from overseas now as opposed to American players out
of the college game. It's continuously increasing because of the
development that already happens where these guys are playing pro
ball already overseas, and once they get to the NBA,
it's kind of a hey, I've been doing this for

(16:25):
a while. I've been playing in Spain, been playing in France,
wherever it is, and I'm good to go. This This
is not a huge adjustment. So just my my thoughts
about that. The NBA season, everything of the sort, but
the Rockets last night one twenty eight, one oh eight
winners over the Memphis Grizzlies, got the Spurs tonight. That's
going to be over on News Radio seven forty k TRH,

(16:47):
so Ross Villareal coming your way at six thirty over
there if you follow us on social media. Gordy doing
a great job of putting up a nice graphic to
let you know what we've got here on Sports Talk
seven ninety and our iHeartRadio family of stations up here.
So of course you got the Koogs and the utah
Utes from over at TDECU Stadium. That's gonna be coming

(17:08):
your way a little bit later today over on KPRC
nine fifty, as well as Texas Vanderbilt here and also
LSU at Texas A and M. But coming up next
one of the groups that has taken it on the
chin this year for the Texans, maybe a little bit.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
Of a come to Jesus moment with them this week.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Let you hear that as we continue to roll along
here on Space City Saturday, Dan Matthews here with you
until noon on your home with the Astros in the Rockets.

Speaker 5 (17:33):
Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
Space City Saturday continues fine Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
Yeah, I wasn't exactly cutting a rug last night as
I fell down the stairs. But I appreciate I appreciate
the belief in me, Melmann, I really really do. And
I'm sure the roach probably after, well before I killed
it probably was like the hell's this guy doing?

Speaker 5 (18:00):
But anyway, yeah, it was. It was an interesting scenario.

Speaker 4 (18:04):
If you don't know what I'm talking about, won't give
the cliff notes here. The cliff notes version is on
my Twitter at Dan Matthews hou Is explaining what happened.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
And again, not under the influence of anything.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
It was a stone cold of the sober variety last night.

Speaker 5 (18:22):
I was on the wagon.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
Last night, so not not that at all, as we
had a fun We had a fun night the night before.
I think, you know, it's kind of one of those
things you get older in life. And you know, Melvin,
I don't mean to put you in the same category
as me because you're younger than me, but you know,
it's one of those that it's kind of hard to
put together back to backs at this age. Now, you know,
if you go out, have a good time, do all

(18:45):
that kind of stuff, the next night you probably want
to take it easy a little bit. And me and
the missus decided to take it easy, so of course
doing a post game would have held off till afterwards anyway, obviously,
because you know, I want to be a sound of mind,
sound of voice, everything else in the sort. But even afterwards,
I was just like, you know what, some sleep is

(19:06):
probably in order for us tonight, and watched the end
of UNLV in Boise State, but also to as well
keeping an eye and didn't mention in the opening segment
the World Series. I think most of us probably see
what happened in the game last night. But I mean, again,
you know, it's kind of something that Adam Clinton had
the shirt on yesterday. I just hope both teams lose

(19:28):
the shirt that he was wearing in studio, and I
think a lot of us probably have that same, that
same you know, train of thought when it comes to
the World Series, of course with the Astros not in it,
And also to something that was said earlier in the week,
which actually I'm going to give that to you as
a shot in a chaser a little bit later, as

(19:49):
I know, I was just talking about sober living there
a little bit. But give you that in terms of
you know what, somebody on one of the sides in
the World Series said about the Astros. Of course, we've
been listening all week. I'm sure you know who that
was in what they said. But also to somebody with
an interesting point that I think a lot of us
are going to agree with in terms of the individual

(20:11):
who said certain things about the team that we love
here in Houston this week without even mentioning their name too,
by the way, Like that's what kind of cracked me
up about it is you know that it bothers them
so much.

Speaker 5 (20:21):
I'll save that for later. I'll save it for later.

Speaker 4 (20:23):
I wanted to be organic, wanted to be good, want
to be able to deliver it in terms of full
thought and you know, just everything that needs to come
with it. So we'll do that a little bit later
on the show.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
All right.

Speaker 4 (20:34):
The offensive line for the Texans kind of been taking
it on the chin a little bit this year, and
a lot of it's been their own doing. I mean,
you know, I talked about it that they've had pre
snap issues, they've had protection issues, whatever it might be,
you know, and it's a thing where you look at
this group and you just kind of wonder, like, hey,
how's this group not any better? I mean, You've got
one of the best left tackles in the game in

(20:58):
Laramie Tunsel. I don't know why the hamster fell off
the wheel there, but as Matt Moiscona told us last week,
you know, it's one of those things that sometimes during
live radio that can happen. But Larrymy tunsl the left
guard spot. You've gotten great stuff out of Shack Mason
as well during his time here in Houston, although he's
had some sloppiness at times this year. Kenyon Green been
able to do some good things for you, but also

(21:19):
too as well, he's bit the penalty bug as well,
or at least it's bitten him. And same deal goes
with Titus Howard, who at times has been hurt, he's
been down, but also to has been somebody that you've
been wanting to count on on this offensive line. And
last week, kind of like what happened at Minnesota, the
passing game issues were a little bit of a forefront

(21:41):
for this team and something that was a little tough
for this team. But of all of the things that
you can talk about with that group, we're gonna start
first with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowick by talking about what
happened that game at Green Bay. Of course, you know
Slowik when he talked with the media early this week,

(22:01):
he had talked about the final series offensively for the team.
You know, hey, coach, what went into the first two
play calls, which of course were runs that were stopped
for a loss of five, Then that final play right there,
of how it worked out, and Slowick of course doing
like what any good offensive coordinator did when a play
doesn't work as well as you hope that it would,

(22:22):
they take the blame for it, and he did. He
just said, look, it was a bad play call, didn't
work out, and I'll take the blame for it. Good
on him for doing that. But Slowik talking about the
passing game issues that the Texans had in the game,
and while a lot of people want to blame it
on the offensive line, Slowick says, might be part of
the story, but it ain't the full story.

Speaker 7 (22:42):
And I would say our past game in general struggled.
You know, I didn't do a good job with the
game plan in that regard. I don't think we went
and executed well, and really any regard across the board,
I think our quarterback made a few special plays to
keep us going in the pass game, but we were
not throwing the ball well, I mean we have two
point two a throw or something like that. I mean,

(23:03):
you can't, you can't. You know, for us in our standard,
we know that's that's not good enough. And it's been
good for us to have some hard conversations about that
and look forward to getting better this week. And you know,
we got a new game that we get to go attack.

Speaker 4 (23:16):
So you know, we talked about this on the A
team and I can't remember who of the Adams brought
this up, but I've got to agree with the overall
sentiment of You've got to wonder if there was a
little bit of a conversation maybe you have a closed
door meeting or not, you know, just the your your
regular coaches staff meeting. And here's to say after you know,
Demiko says all right, anybody got anything else? All right,

(23:38):
go ahead, and right before everybody walks out the door,
you somehow get Bobby slow it's attention and say Bobby,
stand back for a second. And you're both right there
in the coaches meeting room. And I'm not saying that
there was paint heeled off the walls or anything like that,
but I think that probably it was kind of just
the way that it seems like Demiko Ryan's handles himself

(24:00):
a little bit of a hey man, we've got to
get better about this, Like we've got to sure that
group up.

Speaker 5 (24:05):
We are not communicating.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
We are getting beat with concepts that honestly should have
been ironed out in training camp and should have been
ironed out the first few weeks of the season, and
they're still persisting right now. So it's the old thing.
Either we're coaching it or allowing it to happen. Seemingly
we're allowing it to happen, So we've got to do
something about it. And I think that was a little
bit of kind of Sloake's commentary this week in terms of,

(24:28):
all right, what can I do to put those guys
in a better position? What can I do to make
sure that they're better prepared once we clap our hands
and go to the line of scrimmage and we start
to play, any of those things that I can kind
of take off their mind and be able to allow
for them to play a little bit more free on
the field, because I think we can agree that for
the most parts, you don't play well, when you're at

(24:48):
the front of your brain for the most part, it's
more that you want to be thinking with the top
of your brain. Those of you've ever been through therapy,
you know exactly what I'm talking about in terms of
the sides of the brain everything else to the sort.
But you're playing your best football when you're just out
there reacting and playing, and that does not seem like
that's something that the offensive line or even this offense

(25:09):
for the Texans are doing at this point. I get
there's no Nico Collins all of that kind of stuff.
But then we get to c. J. Stroud, who, of
course met with the media on Wednesday, and he was
talking about being honest with the offensive line, but also
to issuing out some accountability.

Speaker 8 (25:23):
Yeah, I mean, I know the personalities of my guys.

Speaker 9 (25:26):
You know, it's been my second year with him, and
I know, you know, it's a little different than I'm
used to. You know, this is an older, older, old
line except for really Juice and King, you know, so really,
I mean, for me, the message is just being honest
with them and you know, being heartfelt. You know, I've
been on teams before a while, you know, I've had
to you know, stream and Yale and you know, like

(25:47):
and that's the way you can get to a player
as well. But you know, for this team, you know,
it's really just you know, they understand they then played
a lot of meaningful ball before. And that's for Keyanne Juice,
and then for the rest of the older guys as well.
You know, they understand, you know, we got to be better.
But you know, I don't believe in, you know, being
somebody else, cause when I throw a pick, you know,
they oublive me, you know, So I understand that, you know,

(26:07):
we all want to be better, but you know it's
a way to do that.

Speaker 5 (26:11):
What's the old saying.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
I think it was a Waylen Jennings saying there are
no dress rehearsals.

Speaker 5 (26:15):
We're all professionals here.

Speaker 4 (26:16):
And the reason why I also bring that up is
Gary Kubiak used to have that up in his office
when he was that coach the Texans. But it's still true.
And that's kind of the train of thought that I
think that CJ. Stroud has with the offensive line of
I don't need to yell at these guys. They understand
what's good and what's not good. If you're a professional
you're supposed to know the difference between the two, and

(26:37):
this group probably if you ask them, would say they
failed so far at this point, they have not been
the group that people thought they were going to be.

Speaker 5 (26:44):
And a way that you can change things is to.

Speaker 4 (26:46):
Be able to go out and put out a good
performance the next time a year out on the field,
which luckily going to be tomorrow, and then after that
and then the game after that, and then you start
to kind of start to develop a little bit of
that rhythm and continuity that you want to have with
that group. Because our good buddy Greg Cook, of course
he knows a lot about playing offensive line in the NFL.
He used to have a saying that you need five

(27:07):
pennies to make a nickel, and in this case right here,
that's what you want the offensive line to become. And
that's what they're continuously trying to strive for with that group.
And I think that it also too, just kind of
needs to be a coaching point to them of look,
don't worry about mistakes. You're going to make them. Someone's
going to sack the quarterback, someone's going to hit the
running back in the backfield because you weren't able to

(27:27):
get to them. That's fine. You can deal with the
physical mistakes. It's the mental mistakes at times that have
continuously plagued this team and that's something that the Texans
are trying to work through on the offensive end. And
if just just to say that a huge crux of
all of this is the offensive line, no it's not.
I mean, I've said it numerous times that you need
more out of the guys that you have on the field.

(27:47):
Joe Mixon has been fantastic, but you need more out
of Stefan Diggs, you need more out of Tank Dell,
you need more.

Speaker 5 (27:54):
Out of Dalton Schultz.

Speaker 4 (27:55):
And while Schultz had the longest catch of the game
last week, still you would like for him to factor
a little bit more. And I understand not having Nico Collins.
That's fine. That is just the reality that you have
to live with right now. But it's also too where
you hear about all the time in that building, oh,
next man up, next man.

Speaker 5 (28:12):
Up, Well, soon enough, the next man up has to
do it.

Speaker 4 (28:15):
Like that's kind of the whole point of you know it,
just it kind of becomes words at that point, like
where it's hey, Stefan Diggs, you were brought into here
to not just be a guy. You were brought in
here to be possibly even in some games the guy
and you have not done that yet. And I don't
know if it's necessarily a scheme fits issue or anything
like that, but it's still something that a guy like

(28:39):
him coming in with all the pomp and circumstances he's had,
well he needs to be able to live up to it.

Speaker 5 (28:43):
And the same deal goes for Tank Dell.

Speaker 4 (28:45):
I understand his off season was a little different than
most for not only what happened to him last season,
but also to what happened to him over the offseason.
I get all of that, but you're out on the field,
You're expected to make plays, and fair or not, it's
just the reality of you put on the NFL uniform
and a pass has thrown your way.

Speaker 5 (29:03):
I don't care if you have to leave the feat
for it.

Speaker 4 (29:04):
You're an NFL receiver, bring the football in like That's
just really the long and short of it right there.
So that's another part of it, as well as some
of the guys that I think you really counted on
to try to step up and step forward this year
for the offense, they've left a little bit to be desired,
So there's still a ton of time to be able
to rectify that and be able to move forward. And
we'll see if the Texans are able to do that.
Speaking of the Texans going into the Colts game tomorrow,

(29:27):
Jonathan and Alexander joined Stan Northfleet Chris Gordy on Next
Up yesterday to talk about tomorrow's game. We'll let you
hear from him next as he joined them yesterday right
here on your home of the Astros and Rockets Sports
Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
Welcome back to Space City Saturday one. Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 4 (29:50):
Wind in mess with science. That's what we're doing here
on Space City Saturday. Dan Matthews here with you until
noon has promised. Yesterday Next Up with San Northfleet Chris
Gordy had a chance for the guys to catch up
with Jonathon m Alexander the Houston Chronicle. Of course, he
covers the Houston Texans as we get you set up
for tomorrow's game over at NRG Stadium between the Texans

(30:14):
and the Colts. Let's now listen back to that visit
with Stan and Chris.

Speaker 6 (30:19):
You hear him on the station and on the show
regularly become quite popular on the media circuit here in
the city. Covering the Texans. Courtesy of the Houston Chronicle
Jonathan m Alexander j And A good morning to you, sir.

Speaker 8 (30:33):
Let's get ready for Week eight? What say you?

Speaker 5 (30:37):
Absolutely?

Speaker 6 (30:37):
I'm ready for it.

Speaker 7 (30:38):
It would be a good game.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
Texas really off the line gotta turn things around if
they want to win. For sure.

Speaker 8 (30:44):
You mad at me.

Speaker 6 (30:45):
For how verbal, how vocal, how demonstrative I have been
in demanding calling for Bobby slook in the old line
to be better.

Speaker 8 (30:55):
You mad at me about that? What am I missing here.

Speaker 7 (31:00):
At all?

Speaker 2 (31:00):
I think it is within reason. I mean, you know,
you look at the Texans when they came into the season.
They were supposed to have a five headed monster, and
this offense was supposed to be one of the best
in the NFL with various weapons. Nico Collins, Stefan Deck,
Joe Mixon. Now, of course Nico Collins hasn't played, but
you expect more from guys like Tank Dell, and for

(31:22):
him to have a zero yard game and for the
offense to have taken a step back, particularly the offensive line,
you know, that's an indictment on on Bobby Suck and
the rest of the offense. So they definitely have to
be better, all right.

Speaker 6 (31:36):
I think that as we put the Green Bay game
behind us and focus on what's in front of us.
Obviously the AFC South is up for grabs. Do you
have confidence? I want to ask two questions, Mary, do
you have confidence that the Texans will look.

Speaker 8 (31:53):
More like themselves? But at the same.

Speaker 6 (31:55):
Time, if we look around the league, how many teams
look the way they look and weak one? What do
you think we will see from this Texans unit? Given
who looks like they will that won't be in the
lineup on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
Yeah, I think the Texans will have improvement this week.
I think when you look when you break down the issues,
and I have a story in this in our Sunday paper,
when you break down the Texans issue, they have a
lot of their issues on the road against teams with
loud environments. You look at the Vikings and we was
it Week three, the Colt seven, Week one, the Packers
in Week seven, the Texans have given up their most

(32:31):
sacks in those environments. They give with four sacks each
in those games.

Speaker 8 (32:35):
I think they've been.

Speaker 2 (32:36):
Having a lot of trouble with communicating, figuring out getting
everybody on the same page. When they played at home,
they've only given up six total sacks and that's three games,
so an average is two per game. They'll play at
home this week. I think they'll be a lot better.
And I think that's been a huge folks of theirs
throughout the entire week of practice, they were embarrassed and
they don't want to look that way again in a

(32:58):
very pivotal game on Sunday.

Speaker 8 (33:00):
Yeah, they should be embarrassed.

Speaker 6 (33:01):
Jonathan Alexander the Houston Chronicle joining us here on next up.
Appreciate his time on a Friday, and I think about
I will get to the trade deadline here in just
a little bit. All right, what are we hearing? Some
dudes practiced yesterday. I saw some defensive starters come back.
We know Nico remains out. What did the injury report?

(33:23):
What jumped out at you as we think about who's
gonna play?

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Yeah, I think what jumped out that me was Henry Toltold,
who practiced on Wednesday but didn't practice on Thursday. That
would seem to indicate that perhaps he's probably taking a
step back into concussion protocol I don't think it's totally bad.
He was still in the building, but it might mean
that he might not play on Sunday, which is why
they brought in Devin White because they are very thin
at linebacker, and Devin White has a history of proma

(33:50):
All Pro player, pro bowler. He can play real well,
he can adapt to any system, so I think you
bring him in for those depth purposes. But yeah, I
think that was the thing that stood. Another thing with
Kamari Laster practice for the second day in a row,
and that is going to be huge because they were
starting to struggle at cornerback opposite of Derek Stingley. So
you get one of your best players back and you

(34:10):
hope that helps you against a Colts passing game that's
really good on deep passes and has a lot of
their weapons back with Josh Downs, Alec Pierce, Michael Pittman,
so they're going to be multiple out there. So having
Kamario lastter back is huge.

Speaker 6 (34:24):
I want to stay right here on this Devin White
deal because you and I come from another city. Obviously,
we were on the beat there in Carolina and Charlotte,
and we saw Tampa in the NFC.

Speaker 8 (34:33):
South on a very regular basis.

Speaker 6 (34:35):
You said when I asked about Devin White just then
rotational piece. How much do you think Devin White plays
on Sunday percentage.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
Of now you know, yeah, I think it'll probably be minimal,
probably below twenty five percent. Just given this is his
first week in the Texan system. I think it was
important for them to bring him in early enough because
they do have a short leak against the Jets, and
you know, players get hurt and you need as many

(35:06):
bodies as you can when you have those short week games.
So I think he will probably be playing minimal this week,
just giving the fact he's only practice for two days
going on three today, and then you'll probably see him
tick up more as the week's going and has he
gets used to the system that they're.

Speaker 6 (35:23):
Playing in talk with Jonathan m Alexander the Houston Chronicle
on the Texas Beat joining us here for a couple
more minutes, and we appreciated having him every time we
can get them. I made the statement to start the
show the Texans because of injuries and the poor performance
of the offensive line.

Speaker 3 (35:44):
C J.

Speaker 6 (35:44):
Stroud for right now is no longer the most valuable
player on the team. That distinction for me goes to
Joe Mixon. I do believe they can ride Joe Mixon
the victory on Sunday. It may not be the thirty
for one fifty nine that he had and up in
Indianapolis in Week one, but I think writing Joe Mixon

(36:05):
does so many things, simplifies the passing game, takes pressure
off CJ. Stroud, It allows them to kind of get
their legs back up under them, and gives Bobby some
time to stabilize this thing.

Speaker 8 (36:17):
We know CJ.

Speaker 6 (36:18):
Strott is getting hit as much as except well, I
think they're only two of the quarterbacks getting hit more
than CJ. Right now, you agree with that this thing
is about Joe Mixon or should be about Joe.

Speaker 8 (36:27):
Mixon right now?

Speaker 2 (36:30):
I agree with some of it, and I disagree with
a little bit and will I still think CD Shott
is their most valuable player. However, Joe Mixon is very
much up the top as far as how important that
he is, and they need to continue to ride him
to take some of that pressure off of CJ. Stroud.
But make no mistakes, CD Strott has to be better
in order for this team to win. And it's tough,

(36:50):
right now without Nico College, you're missing your most exposive weapons. Obviously,
Bobby Sawyck has developed this offensive around Nico Collins. In
the passing game, they have to do a lot better job.
But yeah, they have to ride Joe Mixon. The Colts
struggle and stop and run the second worst in the league.
Panthers are the only worst team in the league at
stopping and run. And you saw Joe Mixon was able
to run for one hundred and fifty nine yards in

(37:11):
that Week one performance. He could have success again. But
if you were able to ride him, that takes pressure
off of CJ. Stroud and allows him to potentially first
and maybe hit some passes in that play action game,
which they haven't really done much in recent weeks.

Speaker 6 (37:25):
All Right, Dimiko said there was going to be everything
is on the table to address the offensive line. Do
you anticipate and I through out early in the week.
Others have followed. Does Tightest go to left guard? Do
we see Blake Fisher get some reps in there?

Speaker 8 (37:42):
Do you pull.

Speaker 6 (37:43):
Kenyon Green out and put Kendrick Green in? Do you
think this offensive line? The starters looked different on.

Speaker 2 (37:49):
Sunday at noon, not this Sunday. I think you'll see
the same iteration of the starting line this week. But
if they struggled this week, then yes, I could see
those moves that you mentioned happen next week because they
cannot allow this to continue to go on if they
want to be successful. So as of now, I think

(38:10):
it'll stay the same, but I do think that that
is a possibility you could see those same moves if
they struggle this week.

Speaker 6 (38:17):
All right, final question, we'll get you out of here
on this one. You have an article up in the
Chronicle about the Texans being buyers at the deadline. Some
are saying they could be sellers. I saw something on
the four Letter Networks site. Tell the people a fault
on that and we'll wrap up here.

Speaker 1 (38:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
I just had the opinion of rote the column because
I think the Texans should be buyers are in a
position this year. In years past they were sellers and
guys who stayed pat and didn't make moves. But just
giving the fact that the AFC, the rest of the AFC,
like the Chiefs and the Ravens and the Bills, are
getting better, I think the Texans need to keep up
if they want to win a Super Bowl. They've already
put their chips in by trading for guys like Stefan Digg,

(38:58):
and I think they need to continue that. And I
think one of the areas is in the secondary where
they can improve and get better debt. So that's why
I think they should be buyers.

Speaker 6 (39:06):
All right, that's the voice of John m Alexander. Follow him,
won't you? Jo n Letter, m Alexander, Curtisy O the
Houston Chronicle dropping by next up on a Friday. Appreciate you,
Jayma man let me roll and do the thing. I
see you over at NRG on Sunday.

Speaker 5 (39:23):
Absolutely appreciate you. Please do you all right? There you go.

Speaker 4 (39:27):
Jonathan and Alexander on with Stan Northfleet, Chris Gordy on
next up.

Speaker 5 (39:32):
You missed any of that.

Speaker 4 (39:33):
Of course, you download the free iHeartRadio app and you
can get interviews like that from next up.

Speaker 5 (39:39):
Anytime.

Speaker 4 (39:39):
We have guests on with Sean Salisbury, Brian Leem on
the Sean Salisbury Show. Same deal there, Matt Thomas with
Ross Yep, same deal of course, the A Team, all
of the shows. You kind of just skitch my drift
right there right here. On Sports Talk seven to ninety
you can go and listen to any of that content.
All right, coming out next, a couple of different things

(39:59):
said by Demiko Ryans this week that I think at
the end of the season we could be looking back
at as a turning point for this Houston Texans squad.
We'll let you hear those and react as we close
out the ten o'clock hour here on Space City Saturday.
Dean Matthews here on your home with the Astros and
the Rockets Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
This is Space City Saturday on Sports Talk seven night.

Speaker 5 (40:25):
Gotta love Steven Crew. This usually always put you in
in a good mood. Hope, hold on, Oh did I
hit it too early? I did I hit it too early? Okay,
all right, I see.

Speaker 4 (40:38):
You know, it's one of those things you got to
always make sure that like, you know, like when to
So there you go. Anyway, Texans taking on the Colts
tomorrow over at NRG Stadium. They're hoping to take the
money and run to be able to go to their
sixth win of the season, as the Texans not without
their issues so far at this point in the season.

(40:59):
I mean, you just heard a little bit from Jonathan
and Alexander's visit with next Up that I mean, you've
been looking to certain guys to be able to step
up and make plays for you this season, and I
talked about in the last hour on the offensive end
that you'd like to see a little bit more out
of guys like Stefon Diggs and out of Tank Dell.
I mean, you know you hear it all the time
in that building of oh, next man up, Next man up. Well, look,

(41:22):
it's nice in theory, and you'd love for that to
be the case, but we always know that the air
quotes next man up is a short term solution because
more often than not, you need next men up to
be able to replace a really good player that you've lost.
And obviously, Nico Collins, the production shows he's been incredibly
good for you. He's been incredibly valuable for this team,

(41:44):
and his absence, I think that we can agree for
the first couple of weeks has been sorely missed. I mean,
you didn't see it as much in the New England game.
I think that's more of a product of New England
is just not very good. They've got their own issues
right now. You let them deal with that. But I
mean the Texans were to go up there and do
what you're supposed to do to a bad football team,
make sure that they know that you're the much better

(42:06):
football team. And for the most part that Texans did that.
His absence wasn't as pronounced. But last week I think
that probably with some of the pressure that CJ. Stroud
was facing and just the relative ineffectiveness of the past game,
losing Nico Collins was where it hurt, because for the
most part, you don't have a downfield vertical option without him.

Speaker 5 (42:26):
Right now, that's number one, number two. How many times
have we seen c J.

Speaker 4 (42:29):
Stroud in some of those improvisational plays look down field,
rolling to his right, and sure enough, once the ball
leaves his hand and it finds the hands of number twelve,
then you've got a first down. I mean, he's been
a huge safety blanket for him and he's been somebody
that he has relied upon incredibly heavily, and it's not
been necessarily a situation that has worked out for the

(42:51):
best while Nico Collins has been out. But again, a
couple of things that Demiko Ryans said last week. One
of them, it's going to at first focus on the
offensive line in terms of the pass pro issues that
we talked about a couple of segments ago. But I
think his overarching message here is one that he probably
would have for the receivers, for the tight ends, running backs,

(43:13):
defensive line, linebackers, secondary, whoever it might be. It's pretty
much the same line that he has to everyone out there.
You're on the field, make plays. So Damiko Ryant's talking
primarily about the offensive line and trying to fix the
pass pro issues. But again, I think that it's a
message for the rest of the guys as well.

Speaker 10 (43:31):
We throw the word communication out loosely. There's a lot
of just at the end of the day, just get
the job done. Like at the end of the day
is gonna come down to physically, like getting the job done.
We know where we got to be, we know who
we're on. Just a matter of doing it, doing the
urgency and finishing the proper way.

Speaker 5 (43:49):
So there you go.

Speaker 4 (43:50):
I mean, it's not just necessarily the guys who are
trying to keep pass rushers off of number seven. It's
I mean, you know, even more than the offensive line.
It's Dalton Schultz, it's Ca Stover, It's Joe Mixon, Damian Pierce,
whoever is in the backfield trying to also step up
and pass protection as well.

Speaker 5 (44:07):
It's all of those guys.

Speaker 4 (44:08):
But again, it's what we've been talking about with guys
on the offensive side, because we can pretty much agree
that this Texans team so far to this point in
the season, I would probably ventuly guess that most of
you letter grade through seven games this year would give
the defense as a whole an a right, because we
had some concerns about the defensive line, We had some

(44:30):
concerns about the linebacker position, even though you added Aziz
al Shaier, who had all of that familiarity with Damiko
Ryans from their time in San Francisco, a guy they
wanted to add last year weren't able to, so you
add him and kind of like we talked about all
the time, the quarterback being an extension of the head coach. Well,
on the defensive side, he's definitely that, and not having
Christian Harris, it started to make you wonder, all right,

(44:51):
how's that group going to be as a whole, because
what do we have with Henry Tootee, guy that's really
good in the run stop, but aside from that, probably
leaves a little bit left to be desired in terms
of the overall coverage game, I don't think they really
ask him to do that a ton. But Demiko also
continuing along talking about his quarterbacks.

Speaker 5 (45:10):
Some people wondering with c J.

Speaker 4 (45:11):
Stroud this season, is there a little bit of a
sophomore slump going on? Has the league kind of caught
up to him? Any of those things necessarily coming into play.
But after a tough performance last week, and he had
tough performances in his rookie season. Atlanta was not great,
Carolina was not great. Up in New Jersey, he got concussed,
had to miss a couple of weeks, but then he
came back and he was still playing at an incredibly

(45:33):
high level.

Speaker 5 (45:34):
So with c J.

Speaker 4 (45:35):
Stroud going through some of the issues that he's gone
through in this second season, what does Dimico Ryans necessarily
think about his chances and his ability to be able
to bounce back from rough performances.

Speaker 10 (45:47):
C J Handl's adversity really well because he's really grounded, right,
He's grounded and the word first and foremost, and that
helps him to be able to weather, you know, the adversity.

Speaker 6 (45:58):
One.

Speaker 10 (45:58):
Tough things come as way as you know, losing a
game or having a tough game. Is it the only
adversity he's faced in life? And it doesn't dictate who
he is or change you know, his personality and what
he's about. So and I'm excited to see how not
only CJ, but how everyone responds. You know, after losing
a game. Is it adversity, No, we lost a game.

(46:20):
There's a lot more adversity in life that a lot.

Speaker 8 (46:22):
Of people deal with. We lost a game.

Speaker 10 (46:24):
It happens like, let's move on, Let's see how we
play this week.

Speaker 5 (46:28):
See.

Speaker 4 (46:29):
I like that too as well, because it seems like
in the world now, we want to be able to
have the most just extreme reactions to everything. And I
appreciate Tamiko Ryan seeing that right there, Hey, nobody died,
nobody even really got hurt.

Speaker 5 (46:41):
Well, I mean maybe some.

Speaker 4 (46:42):
People got hurt, but aside from that, it's not really
overall that huge of an issue. You lost a football
game on the road against a very good team.

Speaker 5 (46:52):
That happens.

Speaker 4 (46:53):
Now come back this week and be able to clean
up some of those issues, rectify some of those issues,
and go out and win a football game. That's pretty
much what he's saying to his team. I think that
there is power in telling people, Hey, what's done is done.
Don't worry about it anymore, don't overthink it, don't even
think about it at all anymore. There's no reason to
there's no You're completely wasting your time and effort and

(47:13):
energy doing all of those things. If you try to
think back on what has been done, think about what
you can do going forward. And what you can do
going forward is when a game tomorrow against the Colts.
All right, one hour is in the books. Coming up next,
we'll continue the Texans conversation also as well, get into
a little bit of some college football, maybe even sprinkling
some Rockets and also too, got to let you hear

(47:36):
those comments and the chaser to the comments regarding the
Houston Astros earlier this week. We will have that all
coming up here in the eleven o'clock hour on Space
City Saturday. Dan Matthews here with you for one more
hour on your home of the Astros and the Rockets,
Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (47:59):
Welcome abore, Welcome to another Space City Saturday on Sports
Talk seven ninety Dan Matthews Live and local h Town
breakdown of the world that matters to you.

Speaker 3 (48:10):
The Houston Sports World.

Speaker 2 (48:12):
All these great Houston fans here.

Speaker 3 (48:14):
We love you all, so finish up on that to
do list.

Speaker 1 (48:19):
Lout up the cooler because you can't drink in talk
sports all day if you don't start now bear me
the eight. This is Space City Saturday.

Speaker 3 (48:29):
It's insane. Here's seven nineties Dan Matthews.

Speaker 4 (48:39):
Indeed, it is Craig Ackerman. It is indeed insane. That's
the one we live in now. But it is a
chance for us to talk some sports here on Space
City Saturday. Dan Matthews here with you for the arrest
of the hour. If you want to get in on
any of the Texans conversation we've gone through, you can
do so. Someone three two one two five seven ninety

(49:00):
once again, that's someone three two one two five seven
nine zero. You can also hit me up on Twitter
at Dan Matthews HOU one Team Matthews at Dan Matthews
Hou is where you can find me there. We're also
to as a station on Twitter at Sports Talk seven
ninety is where you can find us special thanks to
Melvin Brown, also always doing a great job behind the

(49:24):
glass here on Space City Saturday. College football getting underway
see Ole Miss Oklahoma about to kick off, same deal,
Notre Dame Navy, so the eleven AM games getting kicked off.
And by the way too, if you are part of
SEC Twitter out there, which I'll get into that here
in just a second on another point about that, but

(49:48):
if you are on at social and you follow anybody
that covers the SEC, you would notice that there's a
special visitor today in Oxford for the Ole Miss and
Oklahoma game. John himself, Ray cansella himself. He's there.

Speaker 5 (50:04):
It is.

Speaker 4 (50:06):
You know, I could throw out Billy Chapel as well.
I think probably at that point if you don't know
who I'm talking about, then you won't know who I'm
talking about. What was he in Bull Durham can't remember
his name as the catcher, But anyway, Kevin Costner there
in Oxford checking out the game. Somebody snapping a nice
little shot of Kevin in the grove with a nice

(50:28):
little bloody Mary working this morning. So if you've never
had a chance to go to the grove, I've got
to tell you find a way. I mean, if you've
got a friend of yours that's an old Miss rebel
and they've got a tailgate there, it's it's a sight
to be seen.

Speaker 5 (50:41):
There is no doubt about it.

Speaker 4 (50:43):
Going to some of those tents, they've got chandeliers hanging up.
You've got I mean, you know, you got some tailgates,
and maybe somebody will have like a tenfoil tray of
burgers and dogs in there, and you know he grab
a bun, throw one on whatever. You know, you know,
some mustard, catch up whatever you want to throw on there,
and maybe you have that couple of pops and you

(51:03):
head into the game. But no, you get old Miss.
It's fully catered meals. It is plates that are actually
like porcelain and not just paper plates or plastic plates
or anything like that. So that is where you can
find all of that at Old Miss crash Davis.

Speaker 5 (51:21):
Of course, how can I forget that his name is
crash Davis.

Speaker 4 (51:23):
See, you talk through it sometimes and then eventually you
get to that point and that's where I did. So
Crash Davis. Kevin Costner there checking out the game. He's
on the list of people that you know. It's funny.
When I was younger, I was all about the autograph,
but of course you get into this industry now and
if I've got my recorder, which is my phone, which
if you've see any of my stuff from the Astros

(51:45):
clubhouse or anywhere, if I post a video up, it's
me plugging in a microphone into my phone and I'm
able to get the audio that way. So if I
ever had either or well, actually I guess it would
require me having my phone, but costner, I think I
would want to say, hey, you got a second, like
let's talk, Like, let's let's talk all the movies you've done,

(52:06):
obviously the baseball ones.

Speaker 5 (52:08):
You're a huge fan of baseball.

Speaker 4 (52:10):
Obviously if you're a Texas fan, you know he was
really good friends with Augie Gurrito, So I mean, you know,
be able.

Speaker 5 (52:15):
To talk that. He's just seemingly an interesting guy.

Speaker 4 (52:18):
So I may maybe it would just be just a
conversation off Mike, but you know, just be cool to
be able to meet him. He's definitely one of my
favorites to be able to watch on the screen and
also to love that he's a huge baseball guy too
as well. So who knows, maybe we just talk ball.
I don't know, But anyway, I brought up sec Twitter
and this is going to go at a group of

(52:40):
fans that I know listen to us and that is
of course Texas fans, as we do have Texas football
and men's basketball here on Sports Talk seven ninety man,
love you, Longhorn fans.

Speaker 5 (52:50):
It's it's nothing but love.

Speaker 4 (52:52):
And that's the thing too as well, is not trying
to make it serious, not trying to, you know, put
Anyboddy down. Like I said last week after the Georgia
game with some people who got upset with me, I
just said, hey, look, you're taking it way too seriously.

Speaker 5 (53:04):
It's really not that serious.

Speaker 4 (53:05):
But I will say this, I think that last week
was probably the welcome to the SEC moment for Texas
fans that people like Chris Gordy had been telling you, Hey,
it's around the corner, it's not far.

Speaker 5 (53:16):
It'll be there.

Speaker 4 (53:17):
And of course, you know in the SEC, whenever your
favorite team, you know their their rival, loses, you relish
in a little bit. Like for the most part, everybody's
rival is Alabama because Alabama was one for so long,
so you don't mind seeing Alabama lose.

Speaker 5 (53:32):
So when they went to.

Speaker 4 (53:32):
Nashville a couple of weeks back and lost to Vanderbilt,
it's like, see how much you're missing Nick Saban, Oh
my gosh, how could you lose to Vanderbilt, then you
find out Vanderbilt is actually not that bad. But it's
also to the point that this is an incredibly tough
league top to bottom. That's why it's so funny, like
say for LSU, for example, of you know, you've got

(53:54):
their fans all of a sudden telling the athletic department, Hey,
stop scheduling these tough new site games against really good
Power five programs.

Speaker 5 (54:03):
Our schedule is hard enough. We don't need any more.

Speaker 4 (54:06):
Bring on Louisiana Tech, bring on McNee State, any of
those other schools.

Speaker 5 (54:10):
It's fine. Trust me, We're not going to fall.

Speaker 4 (54:13):
Into the ocean because we played against those teams and
then we finally went into the scc'd be nice to
actually start off the season with the win. But the
point is my message to Texas fans is the same
one that I've had from the beginning, ever since we
knew that this was going to be a reality this
year of both you and also Oklahoma joining the league.
This is a this is your life now, Like this

(54:36):
is not an ind season thing. This is not a
once football season is over. And I know that basketball
for the most part in this part of the country,
it's not a huge sport that we pay close enough
attention to baseball, probably a little bit more we do
than most other parts of the country, like Big Ten Country.
It's there, but they don't necessarily care much about it,

(54:56):
because I mean, baseball's a warm weather sport and for
much of the year up there doing baseball season, cool
weather is still around. But that you know, you also
see teams come out of the Midwest and make it
to al mahall all those different types of things. But
in the SEC and in areas like this, which of
course you know this is for the most part in
the SEC area. Now with Texas and A and M
both being in the league, you pay a little bit

(55:17):
more close attention to it. But again for those of
you that did not know, now you know, this is
your life. There's the good and the bad. When your
team loses, stay off social media because it's not a
fun existence. You're going to see the memes thrown at
you making fun of you all those different types of things.
And it's even in the recruiting cycle as well. If

(55:39):
your favorite school is going for a player, and I
know that even before joining the SEC that fans would
probably do this as well of oh well, they weren't
a good fit anyway, Like have you ever noticed that,
Like whenever, like your rip roaring, you really want that
quarterback prospect to come sign with your program, but then
they sign and go somewhere else, and you're like, ah,
you know, we didn't really need them anyway. I mean,

(56:00):
right before they put on the hat at the table
letting you know where they were going, you seemingly thought
like they were going to be the savior of your program.
And these are just the lives and perils of being
a college sports fan. But I mean again, I've got
to tell you now, you know how it is Texas fans,
And I understand having a lot of confidence in your program.

(56:22):
I understand having a lot of disappointment in losing that game.
That's all emotions that you're right to have, because you
were feeling good heading into that game against Georgia, especially
after the days lost to Alabama, thinking all right, hey,
this is our team. We're a national title contender. We
can go out there and we can be able to
win this game. You can still do all those different
types of things like today, get back on track, beat

(56:44):
Vanderbilt a game again, You're gonna hear right here on
Sports Talk seven to ninety and then be able to
try to run the table and try to get to
Atlanta for the SEC Championship game, and there's still going
to be some roadblocks ahead of you. You got to
go to College Station take on the Aggi's I mean,
that's not going to be an easy game. Especially if
A and M wins this game tonight, then I think
you can definitely say that A and M is very

(57:05):
much in the picture to be able to not only
make it to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game, but
also to be in position to make the College Football Playoff.
So all of those things I think are within full
view for the Aggies. And I mean it's also too
I mean, this is a program changing moment tonight. I
think for Texas A and M that if they're able

(57:26):
to win this game that it kind of shows you,
number one, you've pretty much canceled out the loss early
on in the season to Notre Dame. If indeed you
are able to win out because all intents and purposes,
you get to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game as
a one loss team, then you're probably going to be
one of those final twelve teams at the end of
the season, you'd be really hard pressed to hold out

(57:49):
the SEC runner up with only two losses, and both
of those losses likely two teams that are also going
to be in the playoff, as opposed to years past.

Speaker 5 (57:58):
When it was only four.

Speaker 4 (58:00):
I mean when it was only four, if you had
one loss, you had to win out. There was no
doubt about it. There was no opportunity for you for
you to be able to make it if you did
not do that. And now the Aggies are trying to
be able to be one of those final two teams
or final twelve teams at the end of the season,
and hopefully, if you play well enough, the final two
teams at the end of the year playing for the

(58:21):
entire thing. But just a little bit of college football
here for you will hear us some more college football
coming up here a Bottom of the Hour as every
single week with us on the A team. Chris Gordy
joins us of course, next up the Lockdown SEC podcast
all of the sorts, So get into a little bit
at that Bottom of the Hour or visit with him yesterday.
But programming wise, today got the Texas Vanderbilt game coming

(58:44):
your way. Craig Way and the crew, Roger Wallace, Will Matthews.
They'll get going at two fifteen right here on Sports
Talk seven ninety five o'clock. Over on KPRC nine point fifty,
you're gonna hear the Koog's taking on the Ut saw
Utes homecoming happening over at td EDU Stadium. So get
on over there today if you don't have anything much

(59:05):
going on and be able to watch some Big twelve
football over there, and if you can't, of course, listen
to Kevin Eschenfelder and Ted Party and the crew over
on KPRC nine to fifty. That's gonna get started at five.
And don't forget too, the Rockets are going to be
over on News Radio seven forty KTRH tonight, so you're
going to have Ross Villa Real and the crew getting
you ready to go at six point thirty for the

(59:27):
Rockets in the Spurs from San Antonio. And then the
game that me and Gordy will be at LSU Texas
A and M. That's going to be joined in progress
as they will get going at six point thirty right
here on Sports Talk seven ninety So got all of
that to be able to look forward to today here
on Sports Talk seven ninety and our family of iHeartRadio stations.

(59:48):
All right, coming up next, let's get into a little
bit of baseball, because the Astros were made a storyline
of this World Series for reasons that you would think
at this point shouldn't be a storyline anymore. But somebody
he made it one and then the chaser two said
person making it an issue. We'll let you hear both
of those coming up next right here on Space City Saturday.

(01:00:10):
Dan Matthews here on your Home with the Astros and
the Rockets, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (01:00:16):
Space City Saturday continues. Why Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (01:00:22):
Oh Man borrowing out for Hall of Oats.

Speaker 4 (01:00:27):
I can't remember who sue who, but I mean it
basically just ended Hall and Oates. We've got to love
some good hallo Oats. I think I think most of
us probably agree with that. Dan Matthews here on Space
City Saturday. I hope Melvin Brown's not calling me out
of touch or out of what what's the.

Speaker 5 (01:00:46):
No, no, no, okay, You're definitely not out of touch. Oh,
thank you, buddy, I appreciate it. That's a good one
right there.

Speaker 4 (01:00:52):
I'm telling you Holling Oates comes on like there are
certain feel good groups out there, Hallan Oates is one
of them. Like I said, you know earlier, Steve Miller Band,
it's kind of hard to listen to them and not
be in a good mood. And you know they're definitely
one of those groups. So just good jams. I agree,
I agree. You know it's the old saying, don't make
them like they used to. Well, you know, Holling o

(01:01:14):
it's definitely again like I said, bowling out, we don't
get to hear them anymore.

Speaker 5 (01:01:19):
So that's unfortunate.

Speaker 4 (01:01:21):
What is unfortunate as well as people still making a
huge deal about something that honestly us around here we're
tired of hearing about because well it happened seven years ago.
And if you're still holding onto the Astros being the
reason why things have not worked out for you Yankees
and Dodgers, then your your own issue. It's not anybody

(01:01:43):
else at that point. Because I got talked about earlier
with the Texans, what Don is done, and with the Texans,
what happened last week in Green Bay, what happened a
few weeks ago in Minnesota. You can't go back and
fix it. You can only just be able to try
to make good on it going forward. And Texans were
able to do that last year in one of the
games that they had where you lost by a pretty

(01:02:05):
huge margin to the Cleveland Browns earlier on in the
regular season. He came back in the postseason. Of course,
first time it was without c J. Stroud. Second time
you have c J. Stroud and you saw well just
how good you were compared to them, and you prove
that in the playoffs. And they're hoping that they can
be able to do that if indeed you see Green
Bay or Minnesota later on in the season, if you're

(01:02:25):
able to make it all the way to that huge
game in New Orleans. But for the Astros in particular,
I think you know where I'm going with this. Earlier
this week, Brian Cashman, Yankees GM was on with Christopher
mad Dog Russo on High Heats on MLB Network and
he was asked about his excitement of being able to
clinch their first American League pennant in fifteen years and

(01:02:48):
get back to this point playing for the World Series.
And of course this is where the huge line was
delivered by Brian Cashman that we've been talking about all
week right here on Sports Talk seven nine.

Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
It means a lot.

Speaker 5 (01:03:01):
And I hate the fifteen year thing because it doesn't.

Speaker 11 (01:03:04):
It completely forgets and discounts that some other organization see
to us when we were all the way in the end.
You know, if you knew what was going on, I
don't think they would be advancing at that during that
time thing.

Speaker 5 (01:03:15):
I think we would have been advancing.

Speaker 11 (01:03:16):
So I hate that fifteen year thing because I don't
think it accurately reflects history.

Speaker 5 (01:03:22):
All right.

Speaker 4 (01:03:22):
I mean, we can go through the autopsy of that
series and talk about the fact that the Astros won
the first two games here, then the Yankees all of
a sudden started to hit at Yankee Stadium and beat
you three straight games there. Then you came back in
you lost to Justin Verlander or one guy looked completely
foolish on a curveball from Verlander. And then also to

(01:03:43):
the second game, same deal. You couldn't hit, and you
couldn't hit twenty seven straight curve balls, however many it
was from Lance mccullors. But you do you, Brian Cashman,
continue to go that route. So we've been saying exactly
what I've been saying, get over it.

Speaker 5 (01:03:58):
It's over and done with. There is nothing you can
do about it now.

Speaker 4 (01:04:02):
There's nothing that can be done about it from anybody's perspective.
And by the way, too, you lost to him in
twenty nineteen. You lost to him in twenty twenty two,
so it's not like it was a oh, hey, this
is the reason why these guys won. I think the
Astros have proven time and time again it was not
the reason that they won.

Speaker 5 (01:04:19):
They were doing it.

Speaker 4 (01:04:20):
But also listen to other players around Major League Baseball
as well, Chris Sale being one in particular, who said, look,
if they were the only guys doing it, then I'd
say take everything away from them.

Speaker 5 (01:04:29):
But I know for a fact they weren't.

Speaker 4 (01:04:30):
You have major league players who were saying that, So
I'm more willing to listen to them when they say
things like that, as opposed to somebody like this who
is completely sour grapes about everything. So that's not where
it ends, because, like I said, there's a chaser in
this scenario, and I don't think you've had a chance
to hear this just yet. As Cody Decker is a
host on Mad Dog Radio on Sirius XM, and he

(01:04:54):
brought up this very thing of Brian Cashman talking about
the Astros and basically telling him exactly what I've just
been telling you.

Speaker 12 (01:05:02):
Get over it, dude, Brian Cashman, you are a very
good general manager.

Speaker 3 (01:05:06):
Your team's in the World Series.

Speaker 12 (01:05:08):
Why why can't you get over twenty and seventeen? It
is twenty twenty four. The Astros made the playoffs. They
weren't even a contender. They didn't even get to you, guys,
that was twenty seventeen. What did you do, Brian Cashman?
Since two thousand you had six postseasons to get past
the Astros and he didn't do it.

Speaker 5 (01:05:29):
I have no sympathy for you right now.

Speaker 12 (01:05:32):
Get this out of your head, and please focus on
what you're about to face. You gotta beat them, and
you know what, I'm a lot more worried about this
team than a cheating Astros from twenty seventeen.

Speaker 4 (01:05:46):
And it played out exactly that way last night, where
you load up the basis for Freddie Freeman, and Freddie
Freeman says, hey, Yankees, you like this one deficit?

Speaker 5 (01:05:55):
Oh you don't? Well, guess what now you're down? Oh one?

Speaker 4 (01:05:58):
Because I just put one into the right field bleacher.
But no, it's one hundred percent right. And I mean,
I don't know if necessarily, you know, Aaron Judge or
anybody on the Yankees been asked about this week. I'm
sure they probably have, because let's be honest here, soon
enough people want to follow lazy narratives, and they want
to be able to perpetuate lazy narratives and continue to

(01:06:18):
go along with it.

Speaker 5 (01:06:19):
So ask the question only to them.

Speaker 4 (01:06:21):
When be pressed, say WHOA, it's the question that needs
to be asked. No, it doesn't need to be asked.
The Astros have no bearing on this series. The Astros
have no part of this series. They've been out for
about a month now. They have nothing to do with
what's going on right now in New York and LA
nothing whatsoever. Your focus to agree with Cody right there
should be all on the Dodgers at this point. And

(01:06:43):
it's also too It honestly just makes you sound like, like,
you know how, let's let's take it this way. We've
all had that friend, right that's gone through a breakup,
and they're not the ones who initiate the breakup, they're
the ones who are broken up with. And of course
they're down in the dumps. They didn't get their closure
all the different types of things. Trust me, either you've
been that person or you know that person. We've all

(01:07:04):
experienced it somewhere or another in life, and you know
they're down in the dumbs. Then they finally kind of
reached the acceptance space phase, but they almost reach like
the acceptance eve phase. And what I mean by that
is they think that they are over it, but they
continuously talk about their ex boyfriend or girlfriend continuously and
it's still brought up, and then it will all be

(01:07:26):
followed up by but I'm over it now, but I'm
over them now. Like that's what this really kind of
feels like to a certain point. But he's not trying
to tell you that he's over it, because he's clearly not.
Because this guy, honestly in his delusional thinking, truly believes
what he's saying. And it's the fairly evident that he does,
because this is not the first time that he said it.

(01:07:47):
I mean, he had his whole stupid little line I
think it was with Joel Sherman about horrific cheating. No,
Brian Cashman, you know what's kept the Yankees out of
the world serious for about fifteen years. You have kept
the Yankees out of the world serious for about fifteen years.
You have done it with terrible signings, with awful trades,
with awful roster management, like you have been the reason

(01:08:07):
that you have not made the World Series in that time,
not what happened in twenty seventeen, And if what happened
in twenty seventeen is full bearing on you guys getting back,
are you really going to try to say, as a
general manager or the Yankees that, well, you know, we
would have gotten back seven years ago. Do you think
that anybody in the Five Burrows in the Tri State
area up there that puts on your colors and roots

(01:08:28):
for your team would still be okay with not making
it to the World Series in seven years. So, honestly, man,
you really just need to kind of take to a
point you really just honestly need to take the tact
of it doesn't matter anymore.

Speaker 5 (01:08:42):
We don't worry about them.

Speaker 4 (01:08:44):
We're is if anything else, Look, if you want to say,
and it's brought up to you, look we're past them now,
they're not here. We're here. I'm honestly fine with that.
I know that some Astros fans wouldn't like it, but
it's the truth. They're there whistle while you work. But
also too, at the same time, you shouldn't even be
worried about this group. If you're going to try to
do this whole tact of I'm not even going to

(01:09:05):
say their name, then clearly people are telling you you
don't have to say their name. We know that you're
thinking about them, and it's just honestly a huge thing
that has held the Yankees back, and I've said the
same thing about the Dodgers as well, for Dodger fans
who want to continue to come out the Astros for
what happened. Honestly, it's about what you do. It's not
about what anybody else does you hear to meet Go

(01:09:27):
Ryan say it all the time with the Texans, it's
about what we do.

Speaker 5 (01:09:30):
It's mostly a saying used in football. But it's also
too as well.

Speaker 4 (01:09:34):
Of your organizations have accomplished so much through the lifetime
of you being in existence that you're really going to
continuously try to hammer home this point of oh, we
were cheated, we were cheated, we were cheated, you lost.
That's really what it all comes down to. You lost,
and if you're going to try to say that it
was a fluke, that's the only way that the Astros

(01:09:56):
were able to do it. It was proven eight to
twenty twenty twenty two that that was not the case.
And it also every year except for this one, has
been proven that the Astros weren't indeed a fluke. They've
continued to find themselves in position to play for a
World Series year in and year out, and we thought
that was gonna be the case this year. But here's
how he honestly should have handled them. Yeah, we're incredibly excited.

(01:10:18):
It shouldn't have taken us this long to get back.
You know, obviously we have high expectations around here. We
know what the expectations are when you put on this
Yankees' uniform. But no, he went the complete opposite route.
And I mean, can you imagine like what the ghost
of Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth or anybody else feels
about this in terms of how he's handled this entire situation.

(01:10:39):
I'm sure they're probably annoyed and ashamed, honestly, because it's
also too as well. Winners don't focus on what other
teams do. Winners don't focus on what anybody else does.
Winners worry about what they do and finding out how
they can be able to win. That's all that matters
when it's all said and done. So I didn't think
that I would be, you know, loosely pulling for the

(01:11:00):
Dodgers in this series, But after that came out earlier
this week, I was like, there is no way I
want that guy up on a stage holding a trophy
and going through a parade or any of those things. So,
Brian Cashman, I hope you guys lose, and I hope
you lose won Soto during this offseason, and then you
get to show everybody once again what an overrated executive
you truly really are. All Right, that's enough on that

(01:11:22):
got everything out that I need to say on that.
If you want to react to that, you can do that.
It's on the table. It's there for you. Seven one three,
two one two five seven ninety. Once again, it's sebone
three two one two five seven nine zero. But coming
up next, we'll get into a little bit of college
football because our good buddy Chris Gordy stopping by with
us yesterday.

Speaker 5 (01:11:41):
On the A team.

Speaker 4 (01:11:42):
Get you ready for some of the games that are
already underway and some that will be underway a little
bit later on today.

Speaker 5 (01:11:48):
We'll do that next right here at Space City Saturday.

Speaker 1 (01:11:52):
It's Space City Saturday one, Sports Talk seven night here.

Speaker 4 (01:11:57):
Yeah, life's been good and hopefully we'll can need to
be that way.

Speaker 8 (01:12:01):
Well.

Speaker 4 (01:12:02):
Joe Walsh to bring us back Melvin Brown. He knows
how to strike a tenor with the show, no doubt
about it. Appreciates his contributions as always here on Space
City Saturday. Dan Matthews here with you on your home
of the Astros and the Rockets. Sports Talk seven ninety
just did a little bit of baseball there, well somewhat baseball.
At least baseball was involved, but it wasn't the on

(01:12:23):
field variety. We saw that last night as you had
Aaron Boone making an interesting decision to go with the
guy you hadn't pitched in a month, bring him in.
And it's funny too. We were wrapping up Rockets wrap
last night and Josh c as I mentioned, you know,
talking to him back in talk back, I was like
bringing in Nestra Cortez, Josh se Goes. I wonder if

(01:12:45):
Aaron Boone just pulled a Scott's service, and I was
like explaining that to me. He goes, I'm kind of
overthinking it of going with the matchup right there, and
it coming back to bite him. And I had made
the comment and I threw it out on Twitter too.
I said, cholle, hey, Tony, He's gonna walk this thing off,
isn't he? And then you had the nice catchdown there
left field line by Verdugo. He goes into the stands,

(01:13:06):
and of course the ball leaving play, so the runners
at first and second get to move up to second
and third. And you had Mooki bets up at that point,
and of course righty Lefty that decided to put Mooky
Bets on, and then Freddie Freeman decided to do his
Kirk Gibson impersonation. And I mean it was honestly like
I was like, if that happens exactly like that, like
you have to feel like it's a thing of destiny

(01:13:27):
if you're the Dodgers, which again, either outcome here We're
not going to be incredibly thrilled with around these parts.
But a huge win nonetheless last night for the Dodgers.
But now let's get in some college football. As I mentioned,
yesterday on the A Team, Chris Gordy his weekly visit
with us, talking a little bit of college ball. Some
games going on right now, some still ahead here and

(01:13:51):
we'll talk some college ball at least. Let you hear
yesterday Gordy doing as much on the A Team right
here on Sports Talk seven to ninety. All right, so
well get that here in just a second. But as
some of the games going on right now, like I
mentioned Ole Miss Oklahoma underway, as well as you got
Navy Notre Dame, some of you might be watching Nebraska

(01:14:13):
in Ohio states. And to talk about all of the
games happening today is Chris Cordy.

Speaker 13 (01:14:19):
With us on the A Team. Our good buddy Chris
Gordy of Next Up. He and stand Northfleet. They get
together and they bookend our weekends every single week. Gordy
comes in on Friday, tells us what's going to happen,
and then Stan comes in on Monday and winds about
what did happen?

Speaker 5 (01:14:33):
No, I'm just kidding, that's not how it goes. That's
how y'all's shows go basically.

Speaker 4 (01:14:36):
Right, Yeah, sometimes, are you you're gonna pat yourself on
the back?

Speaker 13 (01:14:41):
Are you gonna die of a patting yourself on the
back accident here in the segment, since you were totally
on point.

Speaker 5 (01:14:46):
With what you said about the Texas Georgia game.

Speaker 14 (01:14:47):
Yeah, I mean, look, I just like you do this
long enough, you're gonna hit some things, right, some things
that you predict are gonna happen happen, And we'll see
how many I hit on those today.

Speaker 13 (01:14:56):
They haven't played a real defense yet. They're gonna get
crushed pair of ras. See this is where I am
gonna jump. What he said was they haven't played a
real defense yet. The second part doesn't automatically have to
be true. The first part was true, and it wasn't.

Speaker 15 (01:15:12):
Didn't mean they were automatically going to win, didn't even
mean they were automatically.

Speaker 5 (01:15:15):
Going to succeed, but it was still true. They had
not played a Texas.

Speaker 8 (01:15:19):
Is not good. See. This is when I say that
Texas fans, Jay all, you think we're bad. No, no
one thinks you're bad.

Speaker 14 (01:15:25):
It's but I said, it's like, do you want the
green Maserati or the red Maserati. They're both awesome, it's
just one you liked better on.

Speaker 8 (01:15:31):
The red one.

Speaker 5 (01:15:32):
Yeah, somebody wants a green Maserati.

Speaker 15 (01:15:34):
You know, I mean, there are a lot of elements
of the game we certainly can talk about, but two
seem to stand out most, especially on the you know,
Longhorn side. We'll start there on the football first, and
then the controversy second. What they do coming out of
this game, the final six regular season games, and presumably
there's more after that, whether it's the SEC title game
or a postseason birth.

Speaker 5 (01:15:53):
There'll be a bowl game.

Speaker 15 (01:15:55):
Quin, you are moving forward, He's clearly going to remain
the starter, but he also had been pulled from a game.
He actually managed to bench both starters in the same game.
What do you think the future at Texas these next
six games is for Quinn?

Speaker 8 (01:16:08):
I still think it's Quinn.

Speaker 14 (01:16:09):
I mean, look, the thing was the pass rush for
Georgia was getting after it so so much, like Quinn
couldn't do anything, and he didn't look great, and so
I get why he put in arts to see if
we get a spark. Well, Arch had one of the
most explosive plays of the day for Texas, I mean,
the big long run, but unfortunately he couldn't really do anything.
And so I totally to me, I didn't think it

(01:16:30):
was that big of a deal. He went back to
Quinn the second half. Quinn led a couple scoring drives,
and that's that. And I even thought, Okay, it's Quinn's job,
move for whatever, and then they somebody wrote an article
this week Steve Sarkisian addresses the status of his cho
I'm like, why you didn't even need to do that.
We get it, it's quinn yours job. But I will say,
if he lays an egg this week at Vandy and they're,

(01:16:52):
you know, not moving the football and they got three
points at halftime, then what do you do? You know,
do you really start to consider, let's give Arch the
second half.

Speaker 5 (01:17:01):
I don't know.

Speaker 14 (01:17:01):
I don't know what you do there. I don't think
that's gonna happen. I think Quinny were is gonna be
just fine. But my theory of you know, would he
be a little rusty after being out for a month.

Speaker 8 (01:17:10):
He was okay in the Oklahoma game.

Speaker 14 (01:17:12):
Luckily they didn't have to do much offensively because Oklahoma
could do anything. But this is a really interesting like
at Vandy. They've been Vegas has been doubting Vandy all
year long. They went in and you know, played Alabama
as heavy underdogs, not just covered, but one. The next
week they were two touchdown underdogs at Kentucky, not just covered,

(01:17:32):
but one outright.

Speaker 8 (01:17:33):
And now here they are.

Speaker 14 (01:17:34):
Eighteen and a half point underdogs at home against Texas,
and I'm like, are the guys in the desert going to.

Speaker 8 (01:17:38):
Figure this out?

Speaker 2 (01:17:39):
Like?

Speaker 5 (01:17:39):
I think Texas will.

Speaker 14 (01:17:40):
Win, but I think I think Dandy covers that eighteen
and a half, Like, I don't think Texas gonna go
in there just rolling.

Speaker 8 (01:17:46):
If they do, great more power to them. You look
like a top five team.

Speaker 3 (01:17:49):
Again.

Speaker 8 (01:17:50):
Faith is restored.

Speaker 15 (01:17:51):
You mentioned the most explosive offensive play. The most explosive
play of the game was when their defense was on
the field and then they got to come off the field,
even though we didn't think that was going to happen.
We've talked about it quite a bit since, you know,
we've had all these shows since that game.

Speaker 5 (01:18:05):
I know you and Stan have done the same.

Speaker 15 (01:18:07):
I don't think it sets a precedent, but I do
think how the officials operated that evening was incorrect. Not
about the call, but about their procedure. You can't change
that call. It's the way they did. It's a terrible
look for the SEC.

Speaker 14 (01:18:19):
And John McDade, the head of officiating, is going to
have a big task ahead of him this offseason.

Speaker 8 (01:18:24):
It's something they're going to have to address that.

Speaker 14 (01:18:26):
When those referees make a call that's unreviewable, that's it.

Speaker 8 (01:18:30):
You can't get together.

Speaker 14 (01:18:31):
And oh, there was a delaying game, so we decided to,
you know, and they put the replay up. That doesn't matter.
You can't even look at that jumbo tron. It doesn't matter.
The call is made and that's that. And the SEC,
I thought, did a poor job of putting out their
statements saying, oh, yeah, the guys got together and talked
about it. No, they got together and talked about it twice.
I went back and rewatched the play. The field judge

(01:18:51):
comes up and he asks, talks to one ref, talks
to the other ref and goes, you got PI, you
got PI?

Speaker 8 (01:18:56):
All right?

Speaker 14 (01:18:57):
Pass interference on the defense, that's it. I don't get
to go back and overturn it. And particularly when you
know whatever, you want to describe it as the fan
base through a hissy fit and through stuff on the field, whatever.

Speaker 13 (01:19:08):
And if they don't throw that fit, do you think
it's even a conversation? Literally, a conversation between the officials.

Speaker 14 (01:19:14):
There's no delay in the game, and to have the
second conversation.

Speaker 13 (01:19:18):
Talked about that during the broadcast, and I'm like, and
my problem that I'm struggling with was they got the
call right right.

Speaker 14 (01:19:24):
So but that doesn't matter writer getting the right call
right or wrong. There's no review set up there to
review to chalut like, right, you can't.

Speaker 13 (01:19:33):
Like last night's NFL game, Well, yeah, what if they
did the same thing. I asked him that, like, what
did they do the same thing? That's clear as day,
black and white. That should have been called.

Speaker 14 (01:19:42):
Tricky because you don't want you don't want these games
to take four hours. They're they're they're doing all these
things to speed up the games, to make them go quicker.
So you don't want to keep stopping to review every
little thing. But but yeah, at a certain point, you
want to make sure you're getting everything right. So I
think it's a horrible president to set for the sac referees.
And I think we're going to have a game this
weekend might be right up the Roadelloshue at A and

(01:20:03):
M at College station that if a call goes against
A and M, do the fans throw stuff on the field.

Speaker 5 (01:20:09):
The stadium is much steeper by the way.

Speaker 14 (01:20:11):
Well, and again it's to me, I I joked, I said,
welcome to the SEC Texas like it was a very
sec thing to do. This job just happen a couple
years ago at Tennessee and Old Miss where they threw
a golf ball at Lane Kiffin while he was.

Speaker 8 (01:20:22):
On the field.

Speaker 5 (01:20:23):
Are you a mustard again? And a bottle mustard? Say?
Are you going to Kyle Field this weekend?

Speaker 8 (01:20:28):
I will be there.

Speaker 16 (01:20:29):
Yeah, Well, are you looking forward to getting out of
the stadium? I expect it'll be a long delay. Stan
was telling me earlier. He's they're going up to Purview
because it's I think it's their homecoming.

Speaker 3 (01:20:39):
Huh.

Speaker 14 (01:20:40):
So, yeah, that whole highway six two ninety is going
to be a nightmare all day.

Speaker 5 (01:20:44):
Drop him off and then head on end and then
come back and get him on the way back.

Speaker 8 (01:20:48):
Maybe it's gonna be Look, it's you know, you get it.

Speaker 14 (01:20:51):
Whenever you go to College Station for a big game,
it's always gonna be a nightburg getting out of there.

Speaker 13 (01:20:54):
Well, I went there for the George Stray Show in June,
and I'll never go back on purpose not even close.
And I'm at a situation where I'm credentialed and then
I'm by the time I'm leaving, everybody else is filtered out.

Speaker 8 (01:21:05):
Wait till your step daughter transfers from Texas to A
and M and then what.

Speaker 13 (01:21:09):
D I guarantee you on my both children's lives that
will never happen?

Speaker 15 (01:21:15):
So WHEP the game itself, it was a bigger number,
much bigger number earlier in the week than it basically
is now, which is almost a pick them.

Speaker 8 (01:21:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (01:21:24):
No, In fact, some sports books I was looking at
earlier do have it. They have it basically off the
board says it's says even so it's just it's it's
it's a pick them. I think ESPN still got them
as what a half a point or a point favorite,
But yeah, this thing started. Some of them even had
A and minus three and a half to start the week,
and I had a couple of people tell me basically
A and M was getting three for being at home

(01:21:46):
at this neutral field, it would be LSU probably minus
one or two, and if it was in depth value
would be LSU minus four and a half or five.
So that gives you an idea of where these two
teams are no, it's it's it's a great story. I
mean both these teams lose their Week one openers and
have run the table since. And they've done in different ways.
LSU is number two in the SEC and passing A
and M is number two in rushing.

Speaker 8 (01:22:05):
I mean it's they both do it.

Speaker 14 (01:22:07):
Both defenses have been getting better, it seems, week by
week doing things that they need to do. I trust
Garrett nus Meyer for LSU. He's been, you know, in
some hostile environments this year and he's performed well.

Speaker 8 (01:22:18):
Connor Wigman, look, he.

Speaker 14 (01:22:19):
Looked awesome against Bazoo when his first came back last
week in Missippi State. They're two bad interceptions, they lose
Chase pisants their left guard. He's going to be out.
How much does that hurt the run game? So look,
I could I could give you a case for either
A and M or LSU. The only thing I think
in this matchup is Brian Kelly in year three, Mike
Elco in year one, Elko is, Elko is ahead of schedule.

(01:22:43):
Elko everybody kind of thought. Most people asked me for
the season nine to three, eight and four would be
a good year.

Speaker 5 (01:22:48):
For Elco in year one.

Speaker 14 (01:22:49):
Right, he's picked cleaning up Jimbo's mess. He did a
good job of addressing the transfer portal and all that stuff.
Brian Kelly, this is your money year like year three
by year four, Nick Sabaneedo's you're on and Les Miles
at all one and a national championship. So I'm not
saying he's got to get to the playoff win a
championship this year, but you better damn well be in contention.
That's why I think there's a much bigger game for LSU.

(01:23:09):
If Elko loses the no sweat off is back, you
still probably have a good chance to run the table
and by the way, knock the Longhorns out of the playoff.

Speaker 8 (01:23:16):
Maybe in the last week of the season.

Speaker 15 (01:23:17):
We'll see, Yes, they have so far run the table
and then if they lose LSU they can rerun the
table before the Longhorn game. That's a pretty small table
for them to run. It did sound like you were
setting that up as your weekly shot at Mike Elico.
Turned out it was your shot at Brian Kelly. We
have LSU football, Texas A and m here on Sports
Talk seven to ninety likely joined in progress after the

(01:23:37):
Longhorns in Vanderbilt two fifteenth airtime coverage beginning for that
one tomorrow right here on Sports Talk seven ninety. Of course,
UH is hosting Utah tomorrow night at six. That is
a five o'clock start over on nine point fifty kp RC.
I would have expected this game to have been talking
about the U OFH game real briefly, a tough one

(01:23:58):
to be nice. Utah has been extremely underwhelming. Clearly they
have major quarterback issues. The Cougars had actually got a
little bit out of both quarterbacks, but couldn't stop anybody
Kansas last week, what do you think the Cougar's chances
are of winning homecoming?

Speaker 14 (01:24:13):
I mean, you're at home. You gotta find way the
bottom linees, you gotta find ways to score. Like last
week it was there was one point, I think it
was twenty eight to fourteen.

Speaker 5 (01:24:21):
They had the ball.

Speaker 8 (01:24:22):
I'm like, here we go go down, get a touchdown, here,
make it a one score game.

Speaker 5 (01:24:25):
They couldn't do it.

Speaker 14 (01:24:26):
So it was just like you know, I you gotta
score points to win in this league. I know Willie
Fritz is a good offensive mine, but like as you
stick with Chris I mean, I wouldn't even go to
Donovan like I know.

Speaker 15 (01:24:38):
They both were on the field obviously last week with
more significant time for each than they had in the
previous weeks. And I think they probably are are going
to be forced to do that again, if they haven't
already decided by game time to do that again. And
you know, I don't know what the years of Utah
and the Big Twelve will look like, but this might
be the best opportunity for a lot of teams to
get them.

Speaker 5 (01:24:59):
And considering what if they're going through.

Speaker 15 (01:25:00):
I think at the beginning of the year when I
guess was Utah and Oklahoma State we're playing, and I
think I had asked you, is this the possible Big
Twelve title game? And these two teams have been awful,
absolutely awful. There are two undefeated teams in the Big twelve,
b YU and Iowa State. Again the Big Twelve, like
the SEC and the other two conferences, the ACC and

(01:25:21):
the whatever conference ACC they get a bye, they get
one of those top four seeds.

Speaker 5 (01:25:28):
Man, come on, Colorado, all right, there you go, Gordy
with us on the A team.

Speaker 4 (01:25:34):
Yesterday's Sports Talk seven ninety coming out next see some
of you want to weigh in on the Brian Cashman stuff,
so give Ed John a chance to do that here
as we will wrap up this edition of Space City
Saturday on your home of the Astros and the Rockets,
Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (01:25:55):
Space City Saturday on Sports Talk seven ninety Me and
Melvin Brown.

Speaker 4 (01:26:00):
During the break, we're talking about the old days, you know,
places off West tim or Richmond and with front two
forty two right here, Melvin was saying, saction back to
my numbers days.

Speaker 5 (01:26:12):
I was like, oh man, that is that is way
back right there? Oh yeah, numbers.

Speaker 4 (01:26:18):
It's like what was the mobile one, Like, you know,
like places like that to go get your CD players
put in your car. I mean remember, you know, for
the longest time, for whatever reason, my brother was huge
on the CD players that like it was almost like
a magazine set up in the back, like where you
could put like six CDs in there and be able

(01:26:40):
to load it up. And then of course you know,
if you are listening to one CD, you want to
flip to the next one, hit it on the panel
right there and flip to the next one. So yeah,
those were the days, no doubt about it. I mean
now you know, it's one of those things in ed
I see you right there, get to you here in
just a second. But there's something that a friend of
mine on Facebook brought up of they were cleaning out

(01:27:02):
their house and they found an old mixed CD that
they had made. Of course, you know, of using you know,
when we were burning CDs. That's that's what we were doing,
of course, of being able to pirate some music and
be able to have it as your own right there,
the old napster days. But and I brought up the
point that I said that teams now and even leagues,

(01:27:23):
like I think at I forget what conferences media days
they did where they were giving the players, they were
giving them like USB drives, they were giving them CDs,
they were giving them cassette tapes like all these things,
and like basically like do you know what that is?
And of course none of these kids had any idea
because now kids that are playing in college were born
into two thousands, and that started to kind of, you know,

(01:27:46):
cycle its way out, like like you know, I've heard
before of an eight track. I can't tell you what
an eight track is. I have no idea what it is,
Like I know of the concept of it. I know
what it does, but in terms of like knowing what
it is, I don't know what it is. I know
what real to reel is. So anyway, we're getting into
the weeds on that. Let's just say it's a beautiful
piece of machinery.

Speaker 5 (01:28:06):
There we go, there we go.

Speaker 4 (01:28:08):
And now that's what cracks me up, you know, like
we no longer have the arguments like I talked about
with Sean Salisbury and went I with them with him
last week talking about you know, you mentioned that you
like an artist, nobody brings up, Oh, well, what's your
favorite album?

Speaker 5 (01:28:22):
Because nobody listens to albums anymore. You just hey, I
like this song. I'm gonna pull it up on my
streaming service. So there you go.

Speaker 4 (01:28:29):
That's kind of the way that things have changed. Ed
wants away in here on Sports Talk seven ninety ed.
What's going on, buddy?

Speaker 10 (01:28:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (01:28:37):
Regarding Cashman, I think he's afraid of job security, and
so as the manager in New York, the press really
comes after them because they don't win.

Speaker 3 (01:28:47):
They have one.

Speaker 17 (01:28:48):
I've gone to the World Series in fifteen years and
they're not very happy about that. But a few years
ago they did a special on I think it was
PBS about the Astros and cheating in baseball, going all
the way back to Abner Doubleday. And it's been done

(01:29:09):
for years. I mean, you know, it's it's it's nothing new.
It's just that the shoes on the other foot, Yankees
and the Dodgers have been compared to cheaters of the world.
And it's interesting that the picture for the Dodgers complained
earlier this week about the Astros. Also, yeah, because named

(01:29:31):
the guy.

Speaker 5 (01:29:31):
That, Clayton Kershaw.

Speaker 17 (01:29:33):
Yeah, he's always out. And but the thing is, uh,
in that documentary they did, uh, it proved that is
this nothing new? It's nothing new?

Speaker 4 (01:29:48):
Yeah, no, and I appreciate the call. I mean, look,
we could continue to talk until the cows come home.
And of course, you know people who were very much
against the Astros afterwards, and you know I heard pe
you know, one guy even brought it to me once
that I know, saying, oh, well, you know, just because
you get a speeding ticket, you can't say, well other
people were speeding.

Speaker 5 (01:30:08):
It's like, okay, fine, whatever.

Speaker 4 (01:30:10):
You just want the Astros to be made a villain
and they have been, because I've said it numerous times.

Speaker 5 (01:30:15):
And this was all played out too.

Speaker 4 (01:30:17):
We're going to go a different sport for the comparison here,
because last year with Michigan, what was talked about sign stealing,
all those different types of things, Connor stallions, you know,
the whole storyline. Now, I had said from the beginning
there was nothing that was going to come of it,
because Michigan is one of those made programs. If it's Michigan,
if it's Alabama, if it's Notre Dame USC Ohio State.

Speaker 5 (01:30:41):
You get where I'm going here.

Speaker 4 (01:30:42):
The money makers, the ones who have tons of eyes
on them, the ones who have tons of exposure for them,
all of those different types of things, because what does
it do. It hurts the bottom line of the sport.
Because let's be honest here, the Astros being really good
the way they have is not good overall for the
product of Major League Baseball. It's not one of the
larger markets, it's not one of the heritage organizations, all

(01:31:04):
of those different types of things. So I've said it
numerous times. If say Mike Fires played for the Yankees,
or he played for the Dodgers or the Red Sox
or the Cubs or anybody like that, this would have
been a non story from the beginning because the amount
of mental gymnastics that people would have done to be
able to front for them and say, oh, well, you know,

(01:31:25):
this is an organ this is a sport wide thing.
They were not the only ones doing it, and they
would have started to try to dig and try to
be able to back up their point with that and
try to find that, oh, hey, the Phillies were doing it.

Speaker 5 (01:31:35):
I'm just throwing them out as an example.

Speaker 4 (01:31:37):
But you get my point here because I've said it
numerous times with Michigan last year. If that's say we're
Clemson or LSU or Florida State or I mean, I'm
trying to think of any other programs out there that
are kind of, you know, not necessarily the traditional powers
that have been in college football for some time. Oh
my god, can you imagine the gnashing of teeth from

(01:31:58):
people like Dennis Dodd and from Pat forty or anybody
else that would have been talking about the sanctity of
college football has been ruined? Like it would have been
so ad nauseum and honestly, I mean, it would have
been just completely nauseating to hear of these people who
wanted to try to moral high horse this thing until
it finally reached a conclusion of things being taken away,

(01:32:21):
punishments being handed out, all of those different types of
things that we completely don't even talk about it for
the most part anymore because the people who were involved
with it at Michigan are not there. Jim Harball is
in the NFL Connor Stallions, he's not even in the games.
So I mean, it's just again, it just was a
complete case study of what I've said from the beginning.
I knew that nothing was going to come of that

(01:32:42):
because I knew that it would not be in let's
just say for college football, because it is the case
the college football playoff.

Speaker 5 (01:32:50):
Who is really the governing body for power for football.
I mean, let's call it what it is.

Speaker 4 (01:32:54):
The NCAA has nothing to do with it, and they
pretty much even tell you, oh, it's up to the
bowl system, it's not up to us. But then it
gets to college basketball, then they're involved. It gets see
any other sport, then they're involved, but for this one
they're not. And I mean it's again, I mean just
going to show you it was about who did it,
not what they did necessarily, and that's exactly what's become

(01:33:16):
of the Astros. And like I said earlier too, people
like lazy narratives because lazy narratives that people believe are
easy to stand on, because there's no pushback in that group.
And that's why you continuously see this. And when you
wear your Astros hat outside of the city of Houston,
that's why you get people who still wanted to try
to tell you because they feel like they're on their
moral high horse.

Speaker 5 (01:33:36):
Oh I told off that Astros fan.

Speaker 4 (01:33:38):
No, you're just a busy body, loser who has nothing
else to concern themselves with. All right, that's going to
do it for us here on a Space City Saturday.
I want to think Melvin Brown behind the glass. I
want to think all of you who got involved in
the show to today be and Gordy on our way
to College station see LSU take on Texas, A and M.
We'll be back with you next week right here on
your home of the Astros and the Rockets Sports Talk

(01:33:59):
seven nine.

Speaker 5 (01:34:00):
I'm Damn Matthews. Talk to you then,
