Speaker 1 (00:36):
It feels like the first time I made time in
a minute with you. I'm in attendant talking with me
a feelings aside. I got a match if I gets
to the flame. The feelings just got a day as
I got the days falled a straight.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Fall away from ladies and gentlemen. We're back.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
We are back.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
We're getting another one in. It's not it's never going
to be as consistent as you wanted to be. We're busy, boys, Yeah,
we're busy. Gentlemen. We got a lot of stuff going on.
I'm getting destroyed by exams. I got. I had a
couple of last week. I have a couple this week
that won't be too difficult. But I love it.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
I look out, I've known this week.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
You are a lucky man. And yeah, it's busy. It's busy,
but we're here. We carved out a little bit of
time in the schedule, and hopefully we can get more
consistent as Husker football gets more interesting. Hopefully, hopefully. We're
opening up today's episode with that song Candleflame by Jungle,
a little like electronic indie music kind of duo with shame.

(01:26):
My buddy JP saw him in concert in Omaha. I
think last week or maybe two weeks ago, semi recently
he saw him in concert. But welcome back to another
episode of Studio three one three. I'm Deuce, joined as
always by my lovely co host Dylan Sash.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
We're coming at you live from Studio three to one three,
Room three one three in Anderson Hall, affectionately known as
the co JMC. Anderson Hall is the home to the
College of Journalism and Mass Communications. And we're here from
Nebraska's city campus, right here in Lincoln, Nebraska, where we've

(02:04):
got a lot to talk about, mostly football. Today is
going to be mostly pretty football heavy. But before we
get into that, Dylan, I saw you roll over. You
didn't walk over.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
You d walking for a fellow.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
You scooed it over because your your left ankle is
in a boot, and I mean your whole left foot
is in a boot.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
So technically it's in a surgical split.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Technically it's in a surgical splint. I'm not a doctor.
I'm going to school for business and I podcast on
the side.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
I'm not a doctor.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
I would never want to be a doctor or a surgeon.
Never claim that much pressure. But Dylan's in a surgical splint,
not to cast a surgical splint. Dylan, I know you
told me a little bit about this in the hall,
but briefly before we dive into the Husker football, let's
hear about that. What happened in.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Short, shortened sweet of the story is, you know, we
just got too active, We got too after it, you know,
lacross Stone Crew, personal activities, you know, go to the
gym and whatnot. We just we partied a little too
hard when it came to the old left ankle.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
He's too lot us, too locked in, was too focused.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
On the grind, and it has led us to an
unforeseen incident where I had to have a little bit
of reconstructive surgery. If one would say, yeah, but you
know it's it's not too bad, it does suck. I
had two bone spurs taken off, some damage, cartilage cut off,
and then I had eleven holes drilled in my foot.

(03:24):
That's if the doctor's picture he drew for me was,
you know, accurate.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Eleven holes drilled. Most people have zero holes.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
I would say most people probably zero holes in their foot.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
I don't have any hole.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
I had some pretty severe bone bruising over the whole
top of my foot and the way you know, they
relieve that pressure and drain that blood out by drilling
a couple holes in there, and they know it is.
What was supposed to be a very minor surgery turned
into something a lot bigger. They just didn't realize the
you know, severity of it until they got inside of it.
You know, we did our best with MRIs and whatnot.

(03:57):
But shout out doctor Swanson.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
He's been a great guy, doctor Swanson.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
He's really helped me through. But you know, hopefully on Wednesday,
which is for us in two days for two days,
who knows. It might be Wednesday when you see this,
it might be Friday.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Depends on when your boy gets cooking.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
It depends and depends when we get time hopefully pretty soon. Yeah.
But overall, I'm on a nice little mobility scooter, So
shout out, shout out that, and shout out the handicap pass.
That's all I gotta say.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Thank you, doctor Swanson, thank you to the handicap pass,
and thank you to Lincoln Mobility.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Don't sir, they should be giving you money, That's what
I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
They should be giving you that that scooter and all
this surgery. That should be complimentary. They do they have
any idea.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Who I think they know who?

Speaker 2 (04:40):
You know who they drew in surgery on they're doing
surgery on the one the only dalling sash.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
The same people that fixed me also fixed Braydon when
he hurt his ankle.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Is that so really maybe not like the.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Exact same Yeah, sure, but we went to the same
hospital and went to the same place for our mobility
scooters and everything.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's the official orthopedic team of Dome Crew. I mean,
thank you for fixing up Brandon and Dylan. I've never
had any broken bones or had to do any crazy
surgeries like that. Knock on wood. It's cuz I mean
I played soccer, which that's not like really a contact sport.
It's like a little more.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
But you can you can still get hurt. Those slide
tackles can hurt him.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Man, you can get hurt pretty bad. Luckily, I never
succumbed to any injuries there, and I mean cross country. Really,
the only injury you can get there is like a
shin splinter, Like you can get a stress fracture, and
you can break bones, and I mean, the worst thing
that happened that could happen is that you could pass out.
That could happen.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
One of my friends in high school actually tore his
a c L because he was running doing cross country
and he fell in a hole and like hyper extended
and like landed and like jostled it so weird and
it popped.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
It was he like he was running? Was he running
on a course? Was it during a race?

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (05:47):
I was like during a race on a course?

Speaker 2 (05:48):
How did they clear that course? That's outrageous? Steps in
a hole, hyper extends, pears and ACL.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Is a cl MCL one of the one one of
the cls or ls or whatever in the knee the court.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
The course directors would be hearing it from me. Would
I would find whoever was responsible and I would be
screaming at him. Ruining your season over a hole on
the ground is outrageous. I've never had any I never
had any incidents like that. I had a couple of
races where it got so muddy that people were slipping
and sliding away and I had to take turns really slowly.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Surfing down the slope.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah. So I've raced in hazardous conditions, but never any trouble,
never any trouble. But before we before we get sidetracked
and turn this into an hour of nonsense. Yeah, yeah,
we got to turn this into a We got we
got to turn this into a business conversation. Back back
to football. It's it's a Nebraska football season, and we
are at five wins so far. We're five and one,

(06:45):
so right now we have already surpassed or equalled the
previous three year win totals because our freshman year twenty
twenty one we went three and nine.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Yeahs are rough year.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Then twenty twenty two, four and eight. Yep, that was
when Mickey Joseph filled in for part of the season
after Scott Frost got fired, after we gave up six
hundred and fifty yards to Georgia Southern four and eight
that year. Then first year of the Matt Rule era
five and seven, where we I mean, we didn't look great,
but we at least looked like a football team that
was poised for some sort of rejuvening.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
We looked like we were going to do things.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
And now we're five and one, and if we don't
hit that at least six wins, I will cry. I
don't think that not hitting that six win total will
be anything to worry about But boy, the second half
of our schedule is a little insim The second half of.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
The schedule is definitely tough, but I don't think it's
not doable.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
But before we get to the second half of the schedule,
let's just talk about the first half of the Nebraska
football season. Both me and Dylan. I'm looking back on
our old documents from previous episodes. Both Dylan and I
thought we would go six and oh, yes, sir, we
didn't see a loss on the schedule. Unfortunately, we were
proven wrong when the Cornhuskers took on the fighting line

(08:02):
and I we lost that one in overtime. Yeah, and
that was an extremely even game, which we'll we'll talk
about that one in a second, but we're gonna we'll
go through chronological order and just kind of break it down. Yeah,
we'll hit a couple of the more important games in
my eyes, I.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Mean, obviously UTEP W Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
UTEP was easy. There's not much to say about that,
expect we were expected to destroy a relatively mediocre Division
one program, and we did that.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
We Dylan Royo looked great.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
He did look very good.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
In fact, looked like a quarterback, a five star prospect.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
He did look like a quality quarterback, a high quality quarterback,
which is something that we have struggled to produce in
previous years. No disrespect to the previous guys, they just
didn't didn't play up to the standard that I'm sure
they hoped they But now onto the Colorado game, which
is probably electric. It's the best college football game I've
ever been to, and I have to agree, and it

(08:59):
might be the best sporting event that I've ever been
to period.

Speaker 1 (09:02):
Just being the fact that I haven't seen like pro
games or anything like that. For me, most definitely the
most electric game I've been a part of the environment,
the crowd, just the way that the stadium like I
don't think there was ever like a silence in the
stadium or we showed up to show out because of
that game.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
When it's a rivalry game like that, and I would
consider from the Big Eight days, our main rival was
really it was Oklahoma because that was the most contested
rivalry where Nebraska and Oklahoma would trade a lot of
games back and forth. But Colorado was a Big Eight
rival and that was one that we typically won. We
kind of owned Colorado for the longest period of time. However,

(09:43):
after the Big Eight split up and we haven't met
a ton since then. But when we had typically we
were getting beat. Last year we played Colorado in Boulder,
got absolutely smacked. It was like thirty six to fourteen,
the Jeff Simms era. He fumbled, turned the ball over
and we got picked apart that game. And then it
came their turned to head on over to our turf

(10:04):
and we played them a memorial and we played them
very well.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
The a few moments that I can think of some
of the best parts of the game. The opening drive.
Oh God, I Colorado getting the ball first. I know
that everyone in that stadium was just amped.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
I mean, yeah, everybody was ready for defense to do
you know what they had, you know obviously, and against
UTEP we put up forty UTIP only put up seven.
So everybody was so ready for that, just to be like,
that's going to happen again. And I would say, you know,
we did pretty well, holding them to ten points. But yeah,
we showed up. And I would say that I don't

(10:39):
think any student ever really sat down. No, I mean
the student section was so unbelievably loud. Everybody was screaming,
everybody was getting after it. I mean a night game,
prime night game, primetime suar perfect timing, not perfect time,
not timing, not that I mean the stadium was loud.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
The first drive was just so awesome because I mean
everyone obviously loud and excited, but just we decisively put
them on the sidelines, and the thing it was great.
I think we we like stopped we they ran the ball,
I think on first down, and I think we stopped
him for no gain or a loss of yards. There
was a loss of something like that.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
We took him from like a loss of one.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
And then I think we had a batted pass on
that second down. And I mean, my memory is a
little hazy, the game was a while ago, but I
believe on second down we batted a pass at the
line of scrimmage maybe, And I think third down we
had a sack. I know on one play. I'm like
ninety nine percent sure we sacked him on one of
those plays.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
I wasn't no, oh wait, no, I'm thinking of the
Tommy or the Tommy Hill pick that was later that
was neither why. I was thinking of the fact that
like just total miscommunication on their part, right, But yeah,
I do believe it was either a sack or it
was a throwaway. Yeah, but it was you know, true
like a you know, a coverage sack or what what
have you.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yeah, I mean, they got nothing going on that first drive,
and they really did get anything going in the first
half at all.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
The oh nothing, they got nothing going in the first half.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
The first half we shut them out twenty eight nothing.
And probably the best moment of the game, and the
best defensive moment for sure, was that Tommy Hill picked six.
Everyone lost their minds the student section. I was falling
over because people were jumping up and down.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
People were freaking out.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
Everyone was rambunctious, and people next to me in the
student section were like screaming, shoving me over. Everyone was
getting egregiously loud.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
It was.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
It was the best moment of the game, so loud
because I didn't see it coming. I mean, I knew
our I knew our defense was going to make some plays,
but a pick six like that, and I was just
expecting some Nebraska moment to happen, like a flag yep,
or you know, just something to bail out Colorado. But no,
it was a good touchdown. I believe that pick six.
I think that made it fourteen nothing because our opening

(12:51):
offensive drive, I think we scored and then there.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
Wasn't our offensive our first offensive drive we went down
and scored. Right, it was pretty much just a very it.
I mean, I hate this say it, but I would. Unfortunately,
we were playing playing very, very good Big ten football.
Right We are running the ball well, we are getting
consistent three four yards a run. But then also Dylan
Rayola is being able to throw for those six, seven, eight,

(13:15):
nine ten yard gains. He is consistently putting it down
and I mean we saw it in the Colorado game.
He can air it out too. We've seen it, like
hef if we get a guy open deep, he's throwing
that thing.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
He can throw the deep ball pretty well. He demonstrated
it that night and our defense was lights out, and
I think our best offensive moment where Raola It wasn't
a particular the deep throw. But do you remember when
Ramir Johnson had that I had that like really touchdown.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
It like hit off his shoulder and he spun over
and still caught it like that was.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
And after he got his hands on the ball, it
was just an open run into the end zone. I
think that may have made it twenty eight nothing. That
may have been our fourth touchdown. It was either our
third or fourth touchdown of the night, I can't remember.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Obviously, very very much dominated the first half of the game.
It's very case in point twenty zero going into half
like very demoralizing as well, getting held to zero points.
But the second half was just intriguing. It really was
very consistent with Nebraska football, which is lacking offense. Right,

(14:20):
But then also I mean, I will say, you can't
look back at it. You can't always blame the refs,
but it was pretty heavily influenced by the refs.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
I felt it was the ref show we had. It
seemed like we had twelve penalties.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
Yeah, it seemed like every other, if not every play
was a flag of a holding or hands to the
face or you know, something along the lines that regardless
of whatever play we made, it was getting pulled back.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
It was a demoralized in second half of football, to
say the least, because.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
There was wasn't there a targeting call too?

Speaker 2 (14:52):
I think there was a target in and I don't
know if anyone.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Got on Colado. Yeah, it's one of the safeties on
car Was it Shiloh?

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Was it Diao?

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Shiloh got hurt in like the second play.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
Oh yeah, yeah, that's right. But it was regardless of
specific plays, it was a demoralizing second half. Our offense
stalled out and playing half of a complete game has
kind of been a theme that will continue to discuss
in some of the upcoming games that will go over here.
But yeah, we played one great half of football. Fortunately

(15:26):
it was enough to get the job done because our
defense was very good in the second half, only giving
up ten points. We dominated Colorado and that opening drive,
that Tommy Hill pick six, they'remir Johnson bobbled catch. Those
are some of my favorite moments of the game. Very
convincing win over Colorado, which I believe ranked US I

(15:46):
believe or was it after Northern Iowa that we got ranked.
Feel like it was after Colorados.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
After Colorado, I think.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
We after our decisive victory over Colorado, we got ranked.
I believe we were ranked twenty third. Then we played
in Northern Iowa, not much to say, they're bad team
at home, and then we get to our sole loss
of the season, the one blemish on our otherwise perfect record,
the game against the Illinois fighting a line. I believe
we were still ranked.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Yeah, because this was Illinois was ranked what they ranked twenty.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Fifth and we were ranked twenty third or something like that.
It was two teams that were just inside the top
twenty five. We knew it was gonna be an even game,
and much so, I guess I drank a little bit
too much of that rule aid before the game because
I really thought we were gonna win.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Well, I was watching it, and I didn't think there
was a way to lose it either. I mean like
I was on the same page, Like I really sat
there and was like, this is going to be this
is gonna be a win, Like we're easily going to
take this home, just being like we're watching the plays
and like they were able to do things, but not
a lot and it was a very once again second half.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
We did not show Our offense just did not show
up in the second.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
It seems like our it seems like it's not like
we get complacent or anything, because it's not like we
just decide to run the ball right, it's just things
just you know, the other teams make those halftime adjustments
and we just can't seem to overcome their adjustments, which
obviously makes them a good football team, but it's still tough.
It's like, we still need to be able to break
through that. I mean, that's you got to look at

(17:20):
someone like I mean not to point this out, but
there are a lot of teams that overcame that second half.
The second half adjustments and you go and you go
on those runs and you can't get complacent. And personally,
I felt like in the second half of the Illinois game,
they just kind of sat there and we're like, well,
defense is going to hold it down, right, We're going
to be fine.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
But Illinois offense showed up.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
But Illinois's a ranked team.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
Unfortunately, we were up seventeen to ten going into the half,
and in that second half we were only able to
put seven points on the board. And really the two
most crucial plays in that game. It was towards the
end of the game. I don't remember at exactly at
what point in the fourth quarter this happened, but there

(18:01):
were two plays back to back that were that gave
me flashbacks to the twenty twenty one corn Huskers where
we just blow it in all of these crunch time situations. Yeah,
it was a I believe it was third down and
Raila dropped back to pass, and I think he had
a wide open I believe it was Fiddoni. I believe
it was Fiddoni who was open downfield. Raila drops back

(18:23):
and just overthrows him. It wasn't egregious, but it was.
It was like there was no chance that Fidoni was gonna.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
Like I remember watching he's streaking down the field and
it's like he had like two steps on his guys.
So yeah, like it was not like and here's the
deal about Fiddoni. Fiddoni's a fast guy, right, He's six
' six. You know he's he's rostered at like two
fifty five, but we know the guy's two thirty five. Yeah,
he's easy, fast tight end in all you know, in
relativity for what a tight end is, right, and so

(18:51):
you know he's got two steps on him. His the
guy covering him is probably a middle linebacker. He did
He's not able to come up. He's not gonna be
he's not gonna be able to close that gap that
point in time. He just put it on Fordny and
let him ride. He's not you know, he's not Jamal Bangs.
He's not na or he's not.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
Able to run Corey.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Yeah, he's not able to run under it and make
that catch. Yeh, at that point in time, you just
got to put it on him. Which obviously I'm talking
about this like I could throw that ball perfectly when
I couldn't. I could hardly throw the ball the sixty
yards that Dylan Rayola threw it. No, we may share
the same names, but lack a lot of the same
thrown genetics.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
These two Dylans do not have. Could not be further Yeah,
no football talents.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Is one of us is in a surgical splint and
the other is currently the Division one starter. So yes,
but you know what I'm saying. And then the missed
field goal, like that.

Speaker 2 (19:38):
Is our special team's woes have been a problem.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
All they Well, Alvano's hurt and I don't want to
say it's you know, his fault, but it is kind
of like you're telling me that, like our backup kicker
hasn't been doing anything, because that's kind of what it
feels like.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
Unfortunately, Yeah, because it was referring to that missed field goal,
which this missed field goal happened immediately after Rayola overthrows Ferddoni.
He overthrows FERDONI we bring out the kicking unit. The
game is tied twenty four to twenty four at this point,
and if we make the field goal, we take the
lead and turn it over to our very competent defense

(20:14):
to try and shut down the ALIGNI and bring us
the win. And Alvano shanks the kick, He butchers it,
he misses the kick. I don't think it was a terear.
I don't think he missed by a lot, but I
mean he missed the field did not go. It was
one of those deals where and it wasn't Fidoni. Sorry,
it was our our kicker in that game.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
Was it?

Speaker 2 (20:32):
I don't think it was. It was hold hole yeah,
John Hole. It was not. It was not a not
a Alvano. My apologies because Alvano.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Is our is our normal, right, he's our distance and
he's also our kicker. Yeah, he's the kicker.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
But it was whole that game. He came in and
missed it when we really needed it, and that if
we if we make that field goal, we probably win
the game. It's easy to look back at these games
and you know, talk about how, oh we should have won.
We could have done this very easily, but you know,
things happened those two butchered plays at the end of it,
and then in overtime, Illinois, our defense just did not

(21:12):
execute the way we needed to. In overtime, Illinois scored
a touchdown on that first drive within two or three plays,
and our and our offense just crumbled. I remember we
were taking I think we had our third down that
was all the way backed up to like the thirty
something yard line.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
Yeah, that overtime, overtime, and you know, we were down.
You know, it was like, you know, his third and
goal with like thirty three yards. And that's when I
remember watching the postgame talk talk show about it. After
the game, we walked went back to Andrews and were
sitting there watching and it was pretty much like, yeah,
like Dean Royola the whole comparison, where like Dean Royola

(21:45):
was trying to be Patrick Mahomes, but he's not Patrick Mahomes,
that whole, that whole deal. And I've gotten to the
point where I don't think comparing them is the right idea, right,
I don't like comparing them.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
He's a true freshman. In Mahomes, he's a true freshman.
He's in his tenth or tenth season, maybe twelve.

Speaker 1 (22:01):
I mean, if you count, he's been around forever, He's
got plenty of experience. He backed up great quarterbacks. Yeah right,
he's he's at the point where it's like there's vastly
different people.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
He was.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
He was holding onto the ball and trying to do
too much. We got backed up and just couldn't capitalize.
That did us in as we lost thirty one to
twenty four to Illinois. The Purdue and Rutgers game are
the other two games we have played this season. We
had perdue right after the Illinois game. That one was
on the road, and well, I mean.

Speaker 1 (22:31):
It was that was a crazy game to watch.

Speaker 2 (22:33):
That was a very bizarre game.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
It was.

Speaker 2 (22:34):
The first half was the first half was scoreless. Again,
we just did not show up to play in the
first half, and I guess I mean our defense, our
defense share as well showed up. I should rephrase myself.
The defense was balling out, but we just could not
get much offense going. And then in the second half
we took over. I believe at one point we had
back to back touchdowns on a like there like within

(22:55):
a minute. I think we scored on offense, and then
I think our defense forced to turn over and score,
and we scored it as a.

Speaker 1 (23:01):
Result of Yeah, she's like we do nothing in the
first two quarters. Yes, this zero zero going at half
and you're like, hey, like how does this happen? I mean,
to be fair, we had what two missfield goals? Yeah,
we had a pass interference that got the gotten a
touchdown taken back from us, so like, at a minimum
we probably should have been and then they had two
miss dad two missfield goals as well.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Correct, I think it was something like that. It was.
It was a very poor display of kicking off.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
Yeah, it was just horrible, horrible, but so you know,
both of those things happened, and then eventually third quarter
comes around. Uh Perdue puts a field goal up. We
responded with a touchdown, but then once again, nothing else happens.
But then all of a sudden fourth quarter, almost immediately,
we have uh Dante Dudell. He runs it in for
us like a short little like we get all the

(23:47):
way up there.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
Cory had that nice touchdown run. He is such a.

Speaker 1 (23:50):
Good Yeah, Jacory had that run.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
He's the most exciting player to watch.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
On what you were talking about, we have that pick six.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
It was a pick John Bowl. Yes, yeah, a pick.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
Six, and it was like one of those deals where
he gets to pick six and almost kind of like
pauses is and is like, I don't know what, didn't
know what I'm doing right now?

Speaker 2 (24:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (24:05):
Right, and then you start to running and he's kind
of surprisingly like I remember watching it being like, there's
no way he scores this because he literally ran like
it seemed like he ran right through produced or offense,
and I was like, can we not get to the outside?
Bounce it outside? But he ran like straight through him perfectly. Fine,
you know, and that puts up twenty eight, twenty eight
to three, and then they you know, they had.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
A they had a touchdown that came a touchdown with
no time left but.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
Less than two minutes.

Speaker 3 (24:30):
Wait.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
Ever, our defense really put the I mean, twenty one
to three is already a pretty insurmountable deficit, and John
Bullock with that pick six put the nail on the coffin.
We showed up, but we didn't play a complete game
until the second half, and again it was enough to
get the win. And another sort of half game that
we played again, just this was two days ago against Rutgers. Rutgers,

(24:52):
we beat him fourteen to seven. We had two hundred
and sixty one yeards of offense. It was the least
offense we had had since Colorado. And in the Colorado game,
our offense just looked so much better than in this game.
I mean, we put up twenty eight points. We were
way more effective. Raiola was throwing the ball a lot
better this game. He only had one hundred and sixty

(25:12):
four passing yards Colorado, he only managed one hundred and
eighty five. But I mean, we really didn't need to
do a whole lot for most of that game because
the defense was playing.

Speaker 1 (25:20):
Line defense was handling it at all, and the.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
Defense was handling it here too the entire game. The
offense we put up fourteen points in the first half,
but we didn't score a single point in the second.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
And once again, that's like the whole conversation we're happened
where it just seems like it gets complacent.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
It was Rayela's worst outing of the year for sure. Yeah,
he was missing, I mean nothing against like obviously, he's
been quarterbacking us the wins for five out of our
six weeks, which is not something we've been able to
say in the past at all. But Rala just he
completed less than half of his passes, only one hundred
and thirty four yards, and it just, I mean, it

(25:55):
was enough. It was enough to get the win. A
win is a win.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
A win is a win. We also had that great
fake punt. Absolutely lit up and I think the only
reason they went with the fake punt because Brother couldn't
couldn't kick. I think, I mean, I don't if you
if you watched him walking off the field each time
after he kid, you could just win space. He was
wincing and he had like his jobs clenched, like he

(26:20):
was hurting.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
But then he had that pass on a rope, Yeah,
and he was. He had that beautiful throw and then
he he won like Special Teams player of the week,
I believe, Yeah, because he punted it so well.

Speaker 1 (26:32):
So he had so many good points punts. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
But like we've been talking about this entire time, the
offense was just non existent in the second half. Our
defense luckily played very well. We let up a touchdown,
but I mean you're bound to let up points playing
another big ten team. It's just going to happen.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
But we had stand out James William the safety. He's
excuse he's classified as an alignment.

Speaker 2 (26:59):
He's on the defensive line. He had a couple of sacks.
I think he had the game Selians sacks.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
You have four sacks, and technically he didn't get a
sack on it, he got a coverage sack or whatever.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
Sure, but regardless, he performed very well. The defense stood
out and we held on to beat Rutgers. But these
these half games, that's what's scaring me so much. I'm
really worried, because you know, you can play a half
decent game and get away with beaten Purdue. You can

(27:29):
get away with beaten Rutgers, who they were an undefeated
team at the time, but they they hadn't played anyone
particularly good and they hadn't won by very high margins.
You can play okay games against these teams and win.
But I don't think that's gonna work against an unbeaten Indiana,
which we have to play in two weeks and then

(27:49):
I believe we follow up Indiana. Is it usc right after?

Speaker 1 (27:54):
No?

Speaker 2 (27:54):
Is it UCLA? Who do oh Ohio State?

Speaker 1 (27:58):
Ohio State? It's And that's a game that you can't
only play half of a game.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
No, and even if you play a full game, beating
Ohio State is a very very very tall order, especially
especially at the horseshoet these these games where.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
They actually might be going to that game.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
Really, are you gonna go with the twins, Trev and
all them or just on your own?

Speaker 1 (28:18):
I got a one of one of the guys they
play lacrosse with is from Ohio. There we go and
his parents have like a tailgating spot.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
How about that?

Speaker 1 (28:27):
And like they were like, yeah, like honestly, like here's
like we've got like a group of tickets. Pay for
your ticket, help get because we're The plan is to
drive out there, and so really it just kind of
depends how my appointment goes on Wednesday. Yeah, if I'm
feeling If I'm feeling good, we're gonna go. If not,
not not the money.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Knock on wood. Hopefully he'll be able to make it
down because it will be a fantastic game.

Speaker 1 (28:47):
It'll be it'll just be an environment too, it's.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
And and it'll be it'll be a phenomenal game if
the Huskers can play complete game. Because we have Indiana away.
They haven't lost yet this season, and they look like
a strong they're like fifty, they're ranked I think they're
eighteenings that they're ranked eighteen, they're unbeaten. Then we have
Ohio State unbeaten. Those are two unbeaten teams that we

(29:11):
have to play on the road schedule.

Speaker 1 (29:13):
Look like they've played FIU, Western Illinois, UCLA, Charlotte, Maryland
Northwestern Okay, so not phenomenal times phenomenal teams, but also
at the same time, like.

Speaker 2 (29:25):
They haven't had six cupcake schools back to back to
back to back to back. Agree, and they've I mean,
you don't just get put in the top twenty five
by beaten cupcake schools. I mean the fact that they're
in there shows that they're a promising team.

Speaker 1 (29:37):
Now also technically the Big ten leader right now as well.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
Yes, and we are just outside of that top twenty
five still I believe that. Let me let me take
a look at the little document I made with them.

Speaker 1 (29:48):
We're like the top five, just outside by like three
or four the.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
Top five teams that received votes who are outside the
top twenty five from like the most votes to least votes, USC, Nebraska,
Navy Army, and Vanderbilt. So we're jet We're we're in
the quote unquote top thirty. I suppose because yeah, technically
we're the twenty seventh team technically if you go by that,
but we're we're right up there. We can play with

(30:14):
Indiana if we if we show up and if we're
able to take it. Sounds stupid to say, because it
kind of is. If we take the second half of
the Purdue game in the first half of the Rutgers game,
that's a complete game. But you can't take different half games.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
You can't pull halves of games. Not how have to
play it as it comes to you.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
So and I think the the side of the ball
that I'm more worried about is the offense. It's I
remember I was talking about this. I'm not sure if
this was mentioned on the episode that we recorded that
we I didn't end up putting out because I didn't
have time to edit it. Busy brother got busy, busy schedule.
I don't know if it was on that episode or
the very first episode of the AAR. It must have
been this one because they hadn't played any games yet.

(30:53):
But I was saying, we haven't let Rayola just sling
the ball downfield in some of these games. He's he's
thrown the deep ball ocasionally. I think in that especially,
I remember in that like if you go back to
the very first game of the season, he had one
really long touchdown throw. But I'm if you let him
throw the ball downfield just more and more, just let

(31:14):
him get as much experience as possible, like in that
UTEB game, in the Colorado game when we're up by
four scores, just let him sling it downfield as much
as possible, because if he has more practice throwing that deep,
deep ball, maybe he'll be more comfortable when he's got
to throw a dime to Fidoni to take the lead
against Illinois. And you gotta have a balanced offense against
these Indiana and Ohio State teams, And I just wish

(31:37):
he had gotten more time to just throw the ball
and they let him really be free and get comfortable
and make the mistakes he needs to make in these
games where we're clearly going to win, so that when
we play the Indianas and Ohio States and all the
other talented big ten.

Speaker 1 (31:53):
I will say he's ready. I will say, like even
when it comes to kind of looking at the like
the Illinois game, I think that was kind of an
eye opener for him. Yeah, when it came because I
felt like that happened, and then I felt like he
was a lot more aware of his pocket in the
Purdue game in that second half when things were getting
a little weird. And I mean, I will admit the
Purdue game was hard. That first half was hard. It

(32:13):
was raining, drizzly, attack weather. You know, that's that's hard
to play in. And you give him credit there when
the weather went away. You know, we put up twenty
eight points when the weather disappeared, right, which is you know,
that does kind of say something. But at the same time,
it's like if you kind of do these, you be
able to move the ball around. I think he's getting
significantly more comfortable. I mean, you look at him in

(32:34):
the pocket, how he stands. He feels confident enough to
throw right. You know, I would trust him to get
it done.

Speaker 2 (32:41):
And we gotta we gotta buye week. This upcoming weekend
is a bye week, so we have plenty of time
to hopefully figure out the offense and understand what went
wrong for a lot of that Rutgers game, because we
it was it was bad. The least amount of points
we'd put up in a game this year. Dylan Raila
had the fewest passing yards of any game this year.

(33:01):
Few was totally yards of offense. Hopefully we can get
that figured out, because that's not going to fly against
polished defenses like Indiana and Ohio State. But let's let's
take a look at the our record predictions. So, like
we said at the beginning of this episode, both Dylan
and I thought we'd be six and oh up to
this point. We both saw a perfect record, and we
are five and one with our loss to the line.

(33:24):
I and now for the second half of the season,
I predicted a loss at Indiana, a loss at Ohio State,
a win against UCLA at home, then a loss at USC,
a loss at home against Wisconsin, and a loss at Iowa.

(33:45):
I didn't realize I was so pessimistic.

Speaker 1 (33:47):
You, well, yeah, that was kind of the problem. You
feel like you had a lot of losses.

Speaker 2 (33:51):
I do have a lot. I have as my end record,
I think that's one, two, three, four five. I had
us as a seven and five team.

Speaker 1 (33:58):
And yeah I have is just nine to three, nine
and three.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Because you have you have a win against Indiana, a
loss against the Ohio State, and yeah, the rest of
it you have, Uh.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
It's you know Ohio State loss, michil win loss at USC.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
But you USC these look any given Saturday, any team
can go out and win the game, because it's true,
like you, if Minnesota can beat USC, so can we.
I mean that was one of my games when we predicted,
starting at the very beginning of the season, right before
any games had been played. I thought we were going
to get beat decisively by USC. But now if Minnesota

(34:37):
can beat then we can too. Because we're we're a
better team than the Gophers. I know we are. I
know that if we played the Gophers ten times, we'd
win nine games, probably maybe all of them. I think
we're we're a good team, and I still think that.
I don't know what I would change about my predictions
here because I I truly do think that our our

(34:59):
floor for these next six games. I think it's one
in five at worst we beat UCLA. And I think
that if we play these half complete games that we've
been playing, Yeah, I feel like if we bring to
the table what we brought for Rutgers, what we brought
for Purdue, I think it's going to be really tough
for us to beat these quality teams. Because all of

(35:20):
these teams have demonstrated that they can play really good
football on any Saturday.

Speaker 1 (35:25):
I agree. My thing coming at this is I think
these road half games on a road game instant loss.
You're going to take a loss to Indiana if you
play a half game. Ohio State for sure, Ucla for sure,
Iowa for sure. I mean Iowa looks good this year,
but also not actually they put up any points like
they I'm a great defense, will looks like I would

(35:47):
normally does they have a great defense. The defense is
literally just like we sometimes can run the ball.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
They're the most Big Ten football team that plays in
the Big Ten currently. Yeah, these games on the road
aren't gonna work. I think now you can look at
it both ways because our floor I still think is
one in five. But if if we play like like
I know we can play, will win every game except

(36:14):
for Ohio State. I think that Ohio State is just unrealistic.
They're they're a top five team, They're a contender for
the national title. I would need to drink a lot
more rule aid to say that, but.

Speaker 1 (36:23):
I would have to be something mixed in with that
rule A.

Speaker 2 (36:26):
There would have to be a little extra kick to
that to that rule A now it's possible that we win,
but I just think it's unlikely. But if we play
complete games, our ceiling is five and one because I
think that every team in our schedule, especially with what
we just saw USC getting beat by Minnesota, we're the
best guy Macho Gophers. With USC beating or getting beat

(36:47):
by the Gophers, I think that all these teams are
beatable because Iowa has a terrible offense. If rail can get.

Speaker 1 (36:53):
Going, won't put up any points.

Speaker 2 (36:55):
Well, well we can carve them up. Wisconsin they've they've
played some good games, but they've all so also played bad. Yeah,
they've played bad games. USC just lost, Like we just said,
Ucla is not a great team. And Indiana they've beaten
teams who are competent but not excellent. And I if
we I think our ceiling is five and one and

(37:16):
our floor for these last games is one in f
one and five. Unfortunately, I agree with you over My
preseason prediction was seven and five, Yours was nine and three.
If you if you had to make any changes right now,
would you what changes would you make to your predictions
because you have an Indiana w Well, the only losses

(37:38):
you have are Ohio State USC and Wisconsin.

Speaker 1 (37:41):
I take my I take my Wisconsin loss back, you
take your Wisconsin. I take that as a win. I
think I would take that as a win, and I
would put Indiana as a toss up. Indiana we had talked,
we had talked about this with you. I think you
you would add Indiana as a toss up as well,
where it was like, yeah, is Purdue or Indiana? Those
are the games. Were either going to win one and
lose the other. We lose one, you know, lose the one,

(38:02):
win the other.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
These records if I had to change anything, so it
sounds like you're kind of saying, like still a nine
and three, maybe a ten to two team. If we
can hang on to beat Wisconsin, which is doable, I
think I I think I would have to go with
I'd go with you own Wisconsin. I think we can
beat Wisconsin. I'm also just saying that because I am
so sick and tired of watching Wisconsin beat US. I

(38:26):
think we can beat Wisconsin. I think that now, I
hate to say it. I think we'll lose to Indiana.
I think Indiana is going to be a real wake
up call, real team. And I think that I mean
Ohio State is just Ohio State. They beat ninety nine
percent of college football teams. I think I think we're
going to be five and three after Ohio State. I
think UCLA at home will be rejuvenated, pick up a

(38:49):
win over a pretty mediocre team. Six and three. I
think USC on the road. They lost to Minnesota, but
they're still USC. I don't think they're ran anymore, but
they're a quality team.

Speaker 1 (39:02):
And yeah, USC is not ranked, they're just outside just
like US.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
I still think it's a loss. I just don't. I
just don't know how we're going to play on the
road when the season's winding down and winning games is
going to be really important if you want any hope
of getting a college football playoff bid or just having
a being put in a quality bowl game. I still
think we'll lose to USC, but we will beat Wisconsin.
I'm changing that. I think we'll beat Wisconsin. I think

(39:29):
that is very doable. I think that they've played good,
they've played bad, but I think that at home. I
just I just really like us playing in front of
the sea of red after and after Wisconsin, I think
we'll win Iowa on the road. I hate to say
we're going to get beat by Arrival.

Speaker 1 (39:46):
But I I.

Speaker 2 (39:49):
Just don't like us against the Iowa man. I just don't.
I think that on the road we will struggle. I
sound like such a negative Mellot. I sound like such
a negative Nelly, But this is just these are my complete,
honest predictions. I think that we I think we're an
eight and fourteen. I said seven to five at the
beginning of the year. We've been We're a streaky team.

(40:11):
We haven't been playing complete games, and I think it
could come back to bite us. And again, I will
say this, like I say in every episode, no disrespect
to these players. Because of these fellas. I want to
have them on episodes and pick their brains and just
talk about the season and really get to know them
just as human beings, because I feel like you can
kind of look at these athletes as it not as

(40:33):
like to say that you can look at them and
not like, not even look at them like normal people.
As a little it's a little extreme, but you can
look at athletes and not really see like a It's
easy to see them just on the field and not
see them as people just walking around living like normal lives,
doing random day to day things. I'd love to have
these guys on, So no disrespect to them at all.
They're all tuned. I'm just making my honest predictions based

(40:55):
on what I see.

Speaker 1 (40:56):
It's like, well, like one of the things that like
it's such a like going off that topic is like
when we had Emma Johnson on the on the podcast,
like you know, to me, he was a football player,
and now after talking to him, he's Emma Johnson right.
Like It's like I see him out on the field
and I watch him play, and it's like, obviously it's
a tenant, like I know I remember him, like yo,
like obviously he probably doesn't remember us, or you know,
he might like vaguely remember it. But it's like I

(41:19):
was like it almost feels a little bit better being
like you're like I have faith in that guy. Yeah,
I know that guy right there. I've sat and I've
talked him for two hours or whatnot.

Speaker 2 (41:28):
You know what he's about.

Speaker 1 (41:29):
I know what he's about. He's going to take care
of business, like listening to his mentality and how he
gets himself to like the standpoint that he is, like
you know, you go and when he gets the ball,
he's gonna make something happen exactly, and I feel like
he's done a very good job of that this year.
So it makes me happy to be like, hey, we
had Emma Johnson on our podcast.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
Correct, So no disrespect to anyone, but my I think
we will go eight and four. I'm thinking that's my
final record prediction now the Wisconsin and I'm not saying
that definitively. My game by game prediction is set. I
think it could easily change. Maybe we do beat Iowa
on the road and struggle against Wisconsin at home because
they have If they show up and play, if their

(42:06):
offense gets going like they had fifty two points against Purdue,
our defense, as good as they are, could struggle. I'm
just thinking that the back end of this schedule, the
back end of the season is going to be rough,
and I think next year is where we're really gonna
shine after another year of development and experience. I think
this year we're an eight and fourteen Dylan, still a
nine and three ten and two squad in your eyes,

(42:26):
I think so nine and three.

Speaker 1 (42:28):
I think nine to three is truly more realistic than
ten and two. I think we'll probably unfortunately hate to
say it, but that Indiana is going to be a
real team, right, It's gonna be a different team than
we faced. They're not Purdue Rutgers. I mean, it's gonna
be kind of like Illinois, where Illinois showed up as
a real team, right, And I think but I also
think like having played Illinois, the boys are going to

(42:51):
know what to expect. They're gonna go into it and
you know, kind of probably with a different mentality that
shows like, hey, like we're stiff of our like we
should be up on that ranked teaming like on the
eight people with you guys, right, like we should hold
our own like we want to be back up there.
We won our chance take a win against that. I
think that says a lot.

Speaker 2 (43:11):
We've had plenty of time to sort of make mistakes
in regular games and have some lackluster performances against Purdue Rutgers.
Hopefully we've worked out the kinks and the bye week
for that first Indiana game and then the following week
where we play the very talented Ohio State over at
the Horseshoe, and hopefully the rest of our season goes well. Dylan,

(43:33):
anything you'd like to wrap up the episode with, what.

Speaker 1 (43:35):
Do you go shout out Women's volleyball fourteen and one, Go.

Speaker 2 (43:39):
Big Red, Go Big Red. Our volleyball st.

Speaker 1 (43:43):
Arno in the conference one when they lost the s
You have no idea what happened there? Rank number two
in the country. Shout out, Shout out women's volleyball.

Speaker 2 (43:52):
I saw Harper Murray the Stars game. She was just
sitting there in the stands and I'm doing my I
worked the moving camera at the Lincoln Stars. I'm sure
I've talked about that before. I just walked around with
the camera and get crowd reactions for the jumbo tron.
And I saw Harper Murray and I put her up
on camera and put her on the jumbo tron. And
then a couple seconds later, someone in my mic goes, hey,

(44:14):
is that a Harper Murray at the game? And I said, yeah,
I just put her on. You want me to do
it again so you can, like, you know, just.

Speaker 1 (44:21):
Get her up again.

Speaker 2 (44:22):
Yeah, yeah, right. I was like, can we put up
a graphic? Like do we have enough time? And then
PA announcer guys like, oh, don't you worry. I'll give
her a shout out, and I put her up and
then they're like ladies and gentlemen welcome Husker volleyball star
Harper Murray, and then everyone collapsed, and yeah, whoa go bid?

Speaker 1 (44:39):
Everybody knows. Everybody knows.

Speaker 2 (44:40):
So shout out to Harper Murray and the women's volleyball
team for taking care of business as they usually do.
Shout out to the Lincoln Stars pour their first five games.
W's Hopefully we'll get Nashvill Oliver on an episode soon
