It is that's crazy, camp.I remember you came in just a

(01:08):

one thousand dollars to open. Sothat's a really good rate for the term
and really excited about that. So, like I said, last day for
that is July thirty first. Andthen also we are still accepting sponsorships and
teams for our golf outing on Monday, September sixteenth, and that's at the
Shawnee Country Club. This year isa little bit different. We have two

ado. I want to introduce ourguests for today, the one and only
the Ottawa Branch manager, Alex Pornchaik. How's it going, Alex? I'm
(02:34):
good good. We're glad to haveyou. How's it going. How's your
driving from Audiwa today? Pretty easy? I got to stop and get Starbucks,
so there you go. What's yourwhat's your go to order? The
honey, Citrus, t O medicine, Hey, whatever gets you through the
day. So Alex, we're gladto have you. And like I said,
you're the Ottawa branch episode. Couldyou just tell us a little bit
about yourself, your background and banking. How long you've been in the finance
(02:58):
world just kind of let us knowwho you are. Yeah. So I
graduated from Ottawa Glandorf in twenty seventeen, and then I went to Bowling Green
State University. I originally started majoringin accounting and had a minor in international
business, and I reached like certainclasses and I'm like, you know what,
I don't like this. Yeah. But throughout that I was working at
(03:21):
Walmart and started as a cashier, worked my way up through management service desk
till I was actually front end manager. So when I graduated college, during
all that, I decided to switchmy degree to business management, like,
you know, this is a betterfit than accounting. Graduated from Big in
December of twenty twenty, where thenWalmart hired me on as a salaried manager.
(03:45):
Oh cool, I was like,I enjoyed it, but I wanted
to keep getting my feet wet andwanting to learn more about business and the
outside environment. I had one ofmy managers look at me. He's like,
hey, I have a friend thatworks at a credit union. Have
you ever looked to go into bankingor credit unions or anything like that?
Like no, like not really mything. And you know what, I
(04:10):
applied. I actually originally applied forthe HR position here at su period okay,
and then they ended up going indifferent way. And Steve's like,
you know what, I think you'dbe a perfect fit for the FSR in
Ottawa, and Amy and Joe interviewedme and they called me and they're like,
you know what, You're gonna bethe fit. You want to do
it? I'm like sure, Ohcool. I took the leap and left
(04:30):
Walmart after four years. And youhave the one in Ottawa yep, yeah,
you worked there? When you workedthere like in high school all or
through college college? I started wellin Ottawa for three months, and then
I worked at the Bowling Green one, oh okay. And then during college
and then after big when I tookthe salaried manager, I was in defiance.
Oh so I was doing a driveYeah every day. Yeah, Hey
go Falcons up or Talents up.You've been there a few times, almost
(04:56):
went there. Okay. So beforefor your brand fander who said your FSR
and you were interviewed by Joe Ludick. Yes, no longer was superior retarded
tol. What did he teach you? Like? How was he like a
mentor to you. So it's actuallykind of funny. He him and Amy
hired me in November. First weekI started training at Allentown that next week.
I trained all through November and December. Joe technically retired December thirty first.
(05:20):
Oh so I never actually got towork with him. Yeah, and
how I trained you? Then?Yes, Holly Taylor traded me from Allentown.
She's awesome. So then it cameover and it was i'd Laura as
r VP at that point. Okay, so I still see Joe quite a
bit. He still comes in,Yeah, give me his advice. He's
helped me and given me advice whereI need it. Like there's been times
(05:42):
I'm like, Joe, how doI handle this? What do I do?
And he's great at still Yeah that'scool. Yeah he was. He
was superior for a long time.Oh yeah, they stole him. Yeah,
at least it's been open sixteen yearsnow. Oh cool. Cool.
Yeah. So so being a branchmanager, how has that helped you grow
in your career? And kind ofhow is that different from being like an
(06:05):
FSR, which is not a branchmanager. Right, So it's more of
seeing the company and the branch asthe whole. Being an FSR, I
was worried about my own goals. What did I need to accomplish? What
did I need to reach? Beingthe branch manager, I see what does
the company need to achieve? Whatdoes our branch need to do? What
does my FSR need to do?How can I support my tellers? How
(06:27):
can I support my wealth management?Right? With Ottawa having all of that
in our branch, it's a verywide variety. So it's knowing where I
can help and what I can do. Yeah, and Superior Wealth Management.
You have Jan there, right, yep, we have Jan and Molly.
Yeah, and you want to justexpand on kind of what they do and
how members can interact with them andwhat they have to offer. So they
do superior wealth management. They areable to do brokerage stocks, they do
(06:53):
treasury bonds, They help with estateplanning, they can help with trust as
well. They have such a widevariety that you can definitely help with.
Yeah. So if you have alot of money or if you want to
kind of start planning or investing inoh, yeah, and they'll help at
Ottawa. Yeah, they'll get you, yeah, get you squared away.
Yeah. In the auto branch,I know next week we're celebrating the or
(07:15):
not really I guess like not reallycelebrating, but we're having a little party
for the remodel you guys have goingon. So what's that going to on?
Tail? So I know they're shorteningthe teller line. We're adding a
new office and a conference room.So Devin ella Brock, our mortgage originator
he just started last September, wassuperior. He's been kind of jumping offices
right now. So he'll have apermanent office a conference room, which will
(07:39):
help, especially with our wealth management. They have a lot of families that
come in that need that extra space, especially when you have the wheelchairs and
bigger families especially, so that willdefinitely be a big help. You can
probably do mortgage closings there now Ithink, do you do any of there
now? Or now? We do? But that can get tight right Yeah,
(08:00):
say is if you have a buyerseller plus realtors a lot of times
back there. Yeah, and thetitle person that cover room will be really
really nice to have. We're excited. Yeah, do you guys have an
f S A desk there? Wedo, they're getting though, Oh okay,
so because we haven't had one Ithink ten years. Oh and so
it'd be nice to have one.But yeah, cool. So it's kind
(08:24):
of switching a little bit. Sohow does your brand support local businesses in
community initiatives? So we do alot of community involvement. Our biggest one
that we love doing as a branchis actually the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl
for kids sakes. We always geta team or actually this last year we
had two teams and we love it. We sit there, we bowl,
(08:48):
we enjoy each other's company. Wedo a lot of fundraising and support the
community. Uh Superiors actually helping withLil Nashville, Ottawa Gland or Frodi's Loan
Nashville. They are being a majorsponsored So that is a big community involvement.
Everything that goes back into the community. We do a lot of the
(09:09):
golf outings. We help with thechamber. We're actually going to be have
a golf team for the Ottawa Chamberouting at the end of August playing.
I am not playing. I havenot played golf in fifteen years. Who's
who's the team? I know Devinand I think he was trying to talk
to Brian Keith and Laura. Maybeit's pretty good golfer. That's what I
(09:30):
thought last week. His his drivesbig go He's got some. He called
and asked me last year about golfing, and I said, Keith Or he
asked me, and I said,no, I have not picked up on
that one. I yeah he is. He's from Oh okay, cool,
cool, yep. So I'll justbe helped. Molly and I are helping
out like that. Oh cool, okay, Yeah, you mentioned rotary,
(09:54):
So just let's get back to that. You're president, were president, I
am now I'll pass president. Asof July first, I officially finished my
presidency. So I'm still on theboard of the Ottawa glend Or Rotary Club.
We do a lot in the community. Like I said, we do
the Little Nashville every year annual FirstFriday in August, and then we have
(10:16):
our Daytona five hundred, big eventevery year, and all of those funds
go back into the community for Rotary. We donate. We did stadium renovations,
UH scholarships every year, all ofthose fun things. Daytona five hundred,
Yeah, they do it where inSuperior actually always sponsors a table for
this as well. A table hasten ten tickets for a car and it's
(10:39):
all by the Daytona Race. Sowhoever places you can get paid out.
We do raffles during all that pooltabs. Oh cool food just in your
community downtown? Yeah? Whatever isthat usually at the Legion? Oh got
you got? Well? Can youdiscuss any memorable customer interactions that high like
(11:03):
the impact of your branch on thecommunity. So some of the biggest things
being with being a younger branch manager. Sometimes I see a lot of the
younger members come into the office thatthey were kids I graduated with or younger,
So it's working with them and gettingtheir credit built. I had a
kid when I first started. Wegot him on my first visa here.
(11:26):
Within the next year we got himat car Loan. He's now buying a
house. Wow. So within thethree years of me being here, I've
gotten to see that transition and watchingpeople grow and seeing them reach their goals
and accomplish everything they want. That'smez. I mean, I'm starting to
(11:46):
get to that because I'm graduating inMay and I'm like, okay, like
it's gonna get real. We're gettingyour hometown. You just kids you grew
up with and are like growing upinto adults. Now, it's just weird
even to me this day, Likeseeing people my age like have kids by
house copies. I feel like we'rejust playing on their plague on a recess
(12:07):
right now, we're like twenty fivemid twenties buying houses, families. It's
it's just crazy. And the bestpart with it is my sisters are younger,
so like their friends come in gettingto see the eighteen and the twenty
year only still starting, and Ican talk to them like a sibling,
right and they listen to me andthey know, so it helps me know,
Okay, they're getting the right ideaand hopefully we can lead them in
(12:31):
the right direction. Yeah. Yeah, and sin times have those relationships too,
you know, they know you.I mean you're not going to give
them some kind of wanky product oralone and they can trust you, you
know, being a family friend orbeing someone in the community that you know
that's really nice. Yes, yeah, definitely. So what what is your
branch looking to do? Like,do you guys have like specific goals in
mind? Like what are you guyslooking ahead to have accomplished for the year
(12:54):
or maybe even in the next year. Keep growing with this remodel We're hoping
with Evan being in the office morenow keep growing with the wealth management.
Molly is licensed within actually she reachedher full year of licensed, so she
has really been growing our wealth managementand portfolio, just helping the community and
building our membership. Really nice tohave a full time mortgage person in there.
(13:18):
So where where does Devin all bounceher out to our offices? So
like, if I'm out of theoffice, he'll use mine. When Sarah
was at Defiance a lot, hewas using hers jans. She's getting close
to retirement so she's not in asmuch, so she he uses hers quite
a bit, kind of whenever hehas space. He's worked in the break
(13:41):
room for a few days. Butyes, we're getting you in office,
we promise. Yeah. Cool.Well, kind of a lot of questions
I feel like come up are like, oh, what's the difference between like
a bank reddit union? So canyou kind of just describe like the main
points of how you kind of determinethose two. So my biggest thing I
(14:03):
always tell members is credit unions everythingwe do is for you. We are
a nonprofit. We are here tohelp you. I'm not gonna sit here
and sell you a product. Thatyou don't need or that you can't afford.
I'm trying to help you and stayin your best interest. Everything we
do is paid back into you withour dividends. That's all I'm here for.
(14:24):
I will tell I tell members straightup that I'm not gonna sell you
something you don't need. I wantto do your best interest and do what
you need done. And I getso much feedback that they appreciate that,
and they keep coming back then becausethey know I'm gonna tell them the truth
and be honest with them. Yeah, it's kind of nice because we're not
for profit. So I mean whenyou open your account with us, it's
(14:46):
like you become a shareholder. Yes, so I mean in the way that
we instead of paying you like insucks and shares, will give you great
loan rates, better interest rates onloans and stuff like that. And then
we also have that annual meeting everyyear where the shareholders can all come and
you can you know, caster opinions, votes, listen to you know,
Phil and Keith speak and all thatstuff. So yeah, it's really nice
(15:07):
being you know, being a creditunion is way more like from a members
standpoint better in you're thinking your bestinterest. Yes, I've had multiple members
that switch over and they're like, the things you guys do for me is
amazing. They're like, I havean answer within a day. I'm not
waiting on hold for two to threehours. I'm not speaking to a robot.
(15:28):
I talk to a person. Iam able to go into my local
branch and be able to get serviceand talk to the tellers and anyone that
I need to help with. Yeah, we're definitely big on that customer service
aspect. I know, we preachedout a lot in our yearly trainings and
you know, just call members bytheir name, you know, just following
up, you know, stuff likethat. It's just so simple stuff too,
(15:50):
and but it really just makes themembers experience with us such a different,
you know experience overall. Yes,does AUTO have a lot of other
finance institutions, Yes, we do. There is seven, oh wow,
including us are additions including us.Three of them have their main branches in
headquarters slash headquarters in Putnam County,Oh So, and they've been in the
(16:12):
county for over one hundred years. We're all superior. We've been here for
sixteen I do like more mortgages thanany Yes, we are the number one
mortgage, Yes, and that isI look at those numbers every month and
it makes me happy because I knowwe're killing it and we're still Like even
at the fair, I had memberssay, Oh, where's the closest branch
(16:33):
to here at the Putnam County Fair, I'm like, right across from Stone
and you're gonna hit it. Yep. They're like, oh, we didn't
know you were here. So it'sstill nice getting out there and knowing,
oh, we're still getting our nameand just keep building really helps out.
Putnam County is not far from Lima. No, so headquarter in Lima.
You drive thirty minutes on was itsixty five or and you're there. So
(16:55):
it's really nice having our headquarters justso close. Oh yeah. I have
a lot of members if they dotheir shopping in Lima or something, they're
like, oh, yeah, Ijust stopped at that branch over there to
get my cash out. They wereable to fix me and take care of
me. Yeah. I'm like, okay, perfect. That's another question.
I think I lost it kind ofjust based off that. I feel like
(17:17):
building relationships with members is huge, and I feel like I see that a
lot, like going to these eventsthat we had this summer, just like
and being like, yeah, likeI know this person, this person like
they know like a lot about me. And having that connection to just I
feel like adds so much because theywant to speak to you and they trust
you and they know you'll take careof them. Yeah, Auto branch is
(17:40):
the only one actually in Putnam County. I know we're around Putnam County.
Defiance Astoria Kenton is delfis selfish isreally close. Line was really close,
but only actually won in Putton County. Right, Yes, so crazy.
How bigger market share is there?Yes, we have one of the bigger
market share of the county. WhenI am yeah, Chloe, do you
(18:00):
have anything else you want to add? I think it's all the questions and
tonics I wanted to discuss. Alexalways asked this one question for our guests.
Say you're talking to someone, Yeah, I have one piece of advice
so you can give them regarding financialsor their financial situation or what's your number
one financial tip that you'll always givesomeone? Start credit young, Yes,
that is the biggest thing. Youhave kids that want to buy a house
(18:25):
and they have zero credit, rightand they've been out of college for ten
years. Yeah, what age doyou think you said you would suggest someone
maybe starting eighteen if you have ajob when you get out of high school.
I definitely. There's so many differentstudent credit cards and superior we actually
have our My first visa is agreat hit. I have it. I've
had it, I went to college. Yeah, and I love it.
(18:47):
It was my first credit card. It's built my credit and it has helped
me. Like it's what helped meget my first car. Yeah, otherwise
I wouldn't have been able to getit. It's very easy to build credit
with those types of credit cards,Yes, it is. Yeah, your
sisters always ask you financial questions andlike for advice and stuff. They do.
They also don't we have that.So my one sister is a nurse,
the other is going to school forpsychology. Okay, so we all
(19:11):
have very different So we have thatdon't ask, don't tell of I don't
ask you your stuff because I don'tunderstand it, and you don't ask me
my stuff. That's fair. Butyeah, if they need like loan advice,
they still come to me. Butanything else than that, they're like,
I don't want you looking at this. Oh yeah, I'm like,
no, no, definitely, butyeah, every so often. Student loans
(19:34):
is a big thing that I alwaysget asked about, not even just from
them, but from other members.Right now, my family members are like,
if they ever like talk, Oh, I'm gonna get this car,
and I know a couple of people. You need a realtory, need check
an account, look you up.I always like whether or not they actually
(19:55):
go in there. I don't reallyfollow up all that much, but I'm
always trying to get people to comeand come and see us. Oh yeah,
absolutely, I'm gonna have to talkto a couple of people. So
it was nice because I've been amember with Oh yeah, yeah, it
was just there you go. Yeah, well, Alex, you appreciate you
(20:15):
coming on. We're not quite doneyet. We have this fun little segment
at the end. Let Chloe takeit away. Rapid fire questions. They're
fun. They are fun. Okay, Winter or summer, summer? There
is there any specific month that you'relike August and August because it's my birthday.
Oh, there you go. Aslong as I can sit on a
(20:36):
beach, I'm happy. There. There you go. TV series or movies,
TV series, any specific like what'syour favorite right now. See every
everyone's talking about I don't have Netflixanymore, so you need to watch Mike.
Well I can't for that otherwise morevel Shield is our We've rewatched that
(21:02):
like four times now. Okay, okay? Text or call call no same,
I'm a big call person. Isthere to explain everything? Yes,
I agree? Situation? Yeah yeah, pizza or tacos, pizza. Morning
person or night person, It depends. I worked second shift for years and
(21:25):
I was a night person at thattime, but then when you switch jobs,
I became I have to Yeah,I've always been a morning person,
So I hope it stays out acity or country. I I always still
like the town half of it,because I hate to say, you get
(21:45):
the village aspect, you get thetown country aspect of it, but then
you don't have that big city living. I lived in beg that was bigger
than Ottawa, right, and thatwas a little big for me. But
still yeah, yeah, for sure, cake or pie cake, any specific
flavor that chocolate cake with whipped sheknew. Oh yeah, I'm not a
(22:11):
big fan of Get behind it there, I like it. Eleven o'clock.
Hey, we need to we needto get a cake of icing, yep
coke or pepsi doctor pepper. That'sthe only dark. That's why I drink.
Okay, that's fair, that's fair. Night in or night out,
(22:32):
night in. Give me a bookand I'm happy, or a movie and
maybe there you go. Same iPhoneor Android iPhone I have, andoid users
come in my office and I willlook at them and say, I'm sorry,
you need to help me. Idon't know how to use your phone.
Everyone. Yes, So I'm beachvacation or an amusement park. So
(22:57):
you said, I was gonna say, you just said earlier that you're a
big best Mario Kart character Princess Peach. That's a different answer. I think
we've gotten one. I don't thinkI was gonna say, I don't.
I don't really hear a lot ofpeople use I think we get the basic
ones was Princess Peach. My othersister was Princess Daisy, and then the
(23:22):
other one was usually Warrior. Ohsee, that's I feel like that's wrong.
That's why he liked him. That. I was gonna say, I
feel like that's a pretty unique character, and I don't hear people use.
Well, thank you Alex for comingon our podcast. We do appreciate,
but we had a good time andhope you will come back sometime. Yeah,
