Speaker 2 (00:37):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
We look at Major's talk about golf, the gossip, the storylines,
all of the excitement each year and today this year,
this season, I should say, my guest host is going
to be Alex Murraz.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
I'm very excited to have you join us this year.
Al thank you, absolutely, I'm stoked to be here. Okay,
good good.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
As we all know, each eighteenth Hole podcast is brought
to you by Tito's handmade Vodka. Thank you to Tito's.
Shout out to Tito's. I almost said shout out to Cheetos.
You know what it actually, Cheetos go well with Teto's,
So shout out to all of it, and a happy
golf season to us all.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
It is officially Masters week. Now.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Before we get into like who we think is going
to win the Masters, there's a lot of things that
we got to cover a lot of things that have
happened since last year's podcasts, including another injury for Tiger Woods,
this time a ruptured achilles and surgery. Al did you
see his April Fool's joke where he said he was
going to be back for the Masters?

Speaker 3 (01:35):
No, I didn't, I didn't.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
He said he'd been sleeping in a cryo chamber or
something and that he was going to be ready for
the Masters, And honestly I didn't buy it. But if
anyone could be that way, it would be Tiger.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Oh, yes, that is correct.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, yeah, he's like bionic.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
There was something funny too about I think somebody tweeted
about the gnomes being taken away, you know from the
Merch tenth Oh yeah, homes have big Yeah. And actually
it ended up being real that this is the last
year that they're selling nomes at the Master.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Oh no, those things are going they're gonna be swiped
up and then you're going to find him on eBay
for like seven thousand dollars after this.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Exactly exactly right.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Okay, So with this, with this tiger injury, I just
I was looking like doing some research on his list
of injuries. All right, So this was a ruptured left achilles.
They did a minimally invasive surgery back in twenty two,
thousand and eight and two thousand and nine. He injured
his achilles back then, but he did play on it,
and then he won six times in two thousand and nine,
so he was doing okay back then. Obviously, this one

(02:38):
a little bit more significant because he had to have
the surgery in twenty twenty one, he had the car accident.
In twenty twenty three, he had a fusion procedure on
his right leg in twenty twenty four. He had micro
decompression surgery. Twenty nineteen, that was when he won the
Master's last right was that it now think yeah, yeah,
twenty nineteen, so that was two years after his third

(02:58):
back surgery, when everybody thought he was cooked and done.
Then now fast forward, he's a little bit older, he's
a little bit more injured, a lot bit more injured.
Is another comeback like that in Tiger's future or do
you think that he's probably done?

Speaker 3 (03:15):
I mean everybody's like, you know, Steve and I Smith,
I think was saying that he's a recreational golfer at
this point, and a lot of people think that he's
he's cooked. You know, his inability to walk right, it's
going to be even more hindered than it has been
in the past. But I you know, I mean if
you look at you look at other golfers as far

(03:39):
as like their longevity, Like even Tom Watson almost won
the Open Championship in two thousand and nine. I think
he three putted. You know, he's sixty years old, right, Yeah,
And I think you know, Tom didn't have the didn't
have nearly the injuries that Tiger had. I think he's
had fourteen surgeries in total.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Yeah, something like that. Yeah, that's ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
That's that's like a football player, right, yeah, or a
really banged up.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Football someone who's not playing football anymore most likely.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yes, exactly. But if there's anything we know about Tiger Woods,
it's his ability to overcome adversity, right, and his ability
to compete and work harder than everybody else. And I
think I think he's still got something left in the tank.
And if there is something for him, it would probably
be at Augusta National as far as winning another major championship,

(04:30):
just because Augusta is a golf course that lends itself
to people that have performed their you know, horses for
courses that have played there, played well there in the past,
excuse me. And if he can keep his length up,
you know, because Augusta's a long golf course seventy five
hundred yards and it's hilly, as we know, I think

(04:51):
he could. I think he could possibly pull something off there.
But it's gonna be you know, it's gonna be a
long shot. But I I think he's got something left.
And what his schedule looks like in the future, who knows,
you know what I mean? Yeah, how many times has
he played like in the last like calendar year, maybe

(05:11):
a half dozen?

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Yeah, and how many of those did he finish too?

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Was it exactly exactly right? So it's gonna be really
interesting how he recovers. And I think, what did you say, Ashley,
it was like three surgeries on that on his left
leg or.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
For something he had.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Well, he had the surgeries after the twenty twenty twenty
one after the car accident. Then he had a fusion
procedure on that same leg two years later, which that's part.
That's why he, you know, struggles to walk so much,
is because of the damage to that leg and then
the fusion. I mean, think about your lack of mobility
and in a place like Augusta with the hills that

(05:49):
fu that you know, having that fusion to deal with
the arthritis is going to flare up. It's going to
bother you. And but he has not given up. He
has continued to come back and fight for it and
fight for it and fight for it. And he seemed
like he was back to being in the best shape
that he's been in probably since twenty nineteen.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Absolutely, and so it's just a bummer that he has
this next stepback.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Yeah. And it's if you look at it too, like
it's his body obviously is deteriorating on him. And there's
always been speculation, you know, whether he's used like growth
hormone or whatnot, and we won't speculate. But yeah, it's
it's it's gonna be a long road. Yeah, and it's
it's I think I just was reading something. It's like

(06:33):
in a recent poll, it showed like seventy two percent
of people that responded said that he should retire.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, which, and that's that's another thing that bothers me
actually because it I think if it was any other person,
sure I could understand, like, man, this is a lot
and you should retire, But if you look at the
personality that is Tiger Woods, first of all, telling him
he should retire is never going to work, right, You're
just fueling him to do the exact opposite. And I

(07:00):
just don't see him going out like that because of
an injury. When he's done, when he decides he's going
to retire, it's going to be because he's realized, like
you know, what I have accomplished all I can accomplish.
But it's not going to be because he got hurt and
couldn't come back onto the golf course.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Yeah. And you've always he's always stated too, and this
is public like my I will stop. The day I
stopped competing is when I know my best isn't good enough, right,
And I don't. I don't think he's at that point.
I think he still feels like he can compete, and
obviously doing the TGL TGL stuff, his swing started to

(07:37):
look really good and he started to look like he was
getting stronger again, picking up some speed. He was still
hitting it out there with those guys you know on
the simulator. So yeah, I don't think he's cooked. I
think he's got something in the tank. Maybe a little
tiger magic like in twenty nineteen.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Oh god, I'd love to see that point.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
Definitely not going to see it this year, but I
would love to see that in the future, that is
for sure. And you actually brought up TGL, so I
would love to get your opinion because obviously this is
something new since we had the podcast. Last year, Atlanta
won the first ever TGL championship.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
I guess is what they're calling it.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Yeah, so Fi Cup and I didn't I will say
I didn't think of TGL as like must watch TV.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
It wasn't like I was like Oh my gosh, tgl's
on tonight.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
I got to put it on, but I would have
it on in the background, and it was entertaining, and.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
I did love the way that they did it.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
I loved that each hole was it wasn't like you
were playing a specific golf course, right, They made them
all up and I thought that was really cool. And
then they had they'd bring some of those back and
you know, you'd see the different holes that they created,
which was really fun and also made me glad that
they don't create a golf course because that thing would
be impossible to play. But yeah, what what did you
think of TGL in its debut?

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yeah, the spear hole. Yeah, there was a bunch of funny,
funny holes there. Yeah. No, I you know, I was
very interesting and intrigued from the get go about TGL,
how it would work, how the broadcast would present itself,
how are they gonna get you know, viewers. Obviously ESPN

(09:11):
being on that platform was a big deal. In the
backing that they had with you know a lot of
celebrities and sports stars I think helped really helped with
that get it lifted. Yeah, you know, I think trying
to appeal to a younger demographic, a different demographic than
your traditional golfers is great. You know, with all the

(09:33):
YouTube you know sensations, whether it's Bryson or Grant Horvat right,
they're trying to kind of cater to a different type
of golfer than what we've seen before. And for me,
you know, I'm a traditionalist in that sense. But I
tuned in and I watched it, and I gotta say, like,
I think the product isn't bad. The broadcast, in my opinion,

(09:58):
could get better, not to you know, harp on your
industry cod and you know, it's like I think Matt
Berry needs to get a little bit more savvy with
the golf lingo. And I think the broadcast did get
better as it went on, as far as you know.
They started showing like uh, strokes gain stats and and
ball speed and distance and and and and driving distance

(10:21):
and things things like that, which which I think the
fan needs to know. I think that's interesting, but I
found it. I found it hard actually to follow, Like
I really did. Like we would sit down, like my
wife and I and watch it and we'd get like,
I don't know, they the first couple of matches would blowout.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah they were not. Yeah, that was boring.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
They were boring, right, And it wasn't until I think
it was the rory the Boston Common versus Jupe Lank
Jupiter Links Jupe stinks, that's what we call them. They
finished like if they finished last in the in the race,
I think. But it's that was the best match of
the season, I want to say, but it's just hard.
I thought it was hard to get engaged, and I

(11:03):
thought it was really it was kind of like you
tune in and out. Yeah, it wasn't like, man, this
is gripping and I've got to watch every shot like
you know in a Masters or US Open or whatever.
So from that standpoint, you know, I thought it was
cool to see the different side of the guys a
little bit, you know, a little bit more jovial and

(11:24):
playful and getting into it like Billy Horshfell with the
with the bird dance you.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Know golf by the way, Yes, yes he is.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
Him and minuu Lee the chef. You guys are those
guys are screen golfers extraordinary. Yeah, So that was that.
I thought that was a really nice component to everything.
You know, they still got to figure out the hammer, Yeah,
throwing that. I think can had somebody up in the
crowd that like analyzed the data that would like send

(11:54):
him signals. Yeah, yes, exactly, So it's we'll see, well,
you know, I think I I think it's fun. Am
I gonna watch every match?

Speaker 2 (12:07):
No? No, I do think.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
Yeah, I do think it's interesting because you brought up
that they you know, then started putting in the stats
and all of that stuff. I think that when they
did it, they were like, we're going to get a
whole new golf audience. And then they're like, well, crap,
we can't grow this if we don't keep our golf audience,
and our golf audience cares about stats because that's half
the game. So I think it was interesting to watch
them kind of try to bring it closer to like, Okay,

(12:31):
we're going to show you the golf stuff you want,
but we're still gonna make it fun. And I think,
I don't know, I'll be interested to see what tweaks
they make for next year, because I would assume they're
bringing it back.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Yeah. Absolutely, I'd like to see them make more like
side hill lies and stuff, you know, the greens on
like all those jacks and it moves around. Yeah, it
wou'd be cool to be able to do that with
like the platform that they hit from in the rough
or the sand, you know. And it seems like the technology,
you know, full swim or the simulators that they're using

(13:01):
seem to be off. At least they were like not
calibrated right for a couple of matches because like you'd see, like,
you know, Tiger hit a wed shot and he hit
it twenty yards over the green. You're like, yeah, he
hasn't he hasn't done that since like ninety three, you
know what I mean. Yeah, there was a few things
like that. So yeah, they'll they'll I'm sure they'll get
that ironed out and whatnot. But yeah, it kind of

(13:22):
remains to be seen. I think Dallas is interested, I guess,
in putting up like five million to get a team.
So okay, maybe you get Jordan Spieth and will Zala
trus in there. I think those guys are Dallas guys.
Maybe Scheffler plays, Yeah, who knows. Interesting that would be
I think. But if you got like Bryce, you got
some live guys.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
I know, I was gonna say that would be cool.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
I was gonna say, would they bring the because when
you said Texas, I was like, well, that's Bryson too.
I wonder if they would consider bringing in some of
those live guys because they keep talking about who knows
what's happening with the PGA Tour and the PIF because
they are supposedly coming together but couldn't be further apart.
So that's a story for another day and an entirely
solop on its own. Tg I wasn't the only fun

(14:04):
kind of off season, or I guess TG all was
happening during the season, but you know, behind the scenes
kind of look we got. We also had Full Swing
season three, and I have I don't I know there's
probably a lot of people out there who haven't watched
it or finished it yet, so I don't want to
give away like any I don't know. I still think
it's like suspenseful. So my question for you is when
you watch Full Swing, because I don't know if I'm

(14:25):
the only I'm probably the only one that does this.
I don't remember the results of the tournaments from the
year before, right, And I think, yeah, Full Swing this year.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Is from last season? Right? Is that right? Or is
it two? Yeah, it's just last season, Right.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
So I watch every episode and tournament stressed out, like
I don't remember who wins this, and it's focused usually
on one player, so you're like, chances are they're winning it,
but sometimes they're not and it's showing their defeat. And
I watch it like I'm watching the golf tournament live
for the first time. Am I the only one that
does that?

Speaker 3 (15:01):
Yeah? I think, But I mean I have a pretty
vivid memory when it comes to golf tournament, so like, yeah,
I mean there there there is that element like, oh
I didn't remember, like that happened, you know. From that standpoint,
I think definitely. You know, the first episode, I mean
I don't know if we want to spoil anything.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
But it's it just excuse me.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
I was like, okay, the first you don't want to well,
I think you could say something in the first episode.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Most people who yeah, I think it.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
Was the first episode, but it was it was the
obviously the US Open, Yeah, Pine twenty twenty four with
with Rory and Bryson. Excuse me, I think we all
know what happened there, right, Rory has a couple of
shot lead and then chokes, you know, miss that short
pot on sixteen and makes a great pars table on
seventeen and then obviously makes a really bad pogey use

(15:57):
a tits driver off the tee, and then Bryson he
makes spogey there, and then Bryson makes an unbelievable up
and down for the ages from that bunker from sixty
yards and they cover they cover that, and I think
I personally, for me, like I wanted to see more
of the behind the scenes of like what Rory was
like in the locker room at the time, and you

(16:19):
could see spoiler alert, but like his agent, Rory's agent
clearly like of the Netflix.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Can yeah, like stop, you're not coming in, You're.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
Not coming in, and like we want to see that
raw like emotion, right because he obviously then stormed off
in his car and didn't talk to the press and
was really you know, hoopooed for that. So I was
that was the episode that I was the most excited
for and then you know, I guess for me, like

(16:49):
I think it it kind of exposes the lack of
characters in golf right now. It's not as like I
don't think it's as pulse racing as season one.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
No, definitely not by any means.

Speaker 3 (17:01):
I mean, it feels like I think people said on
Reddit somewhere that it's like it lacks depth at times,
and it feels like a well produced recap rather than
like really in depth storytelling. And it's more of a
like a PR vehicle for the players, you know, like
the like Minwu Lee and Sense and Justin Rose. But

(17:23):
you know, it does tell some really cool stories and
and some heart like you know, heart wrenching tales with
Gary Woodland and obviously Camilla Vejagas, which is super raw
and powerful, shows some really vulnerable moments there. But I
just it doesn't I don't know, it just kind of
lacks that depth. I think that the other the first

(17:47):
season had to it because we never had anything like that.
And I still will watch, like, I still will watch it.
I think I'm not finished. I have a couple episodes left.
How far are you through it?

Speaker 1 (17:57):
We finished it, but I will say the first two
seasons it was like we couldn't wait to finish it,
Like we probably cruised through that in two days.

Speaker 2 (18:05):
Yeah this year, yeah, this year took longer.

Speaker 1 (18:08):
But I mean, yeah, there were interesting stories, but it
didn't seem to carry over from one to the next
like it has in the past. It almost seemed like
like seven separate stories.

Speaker 3 (18:19):
Yes, yes, exactly.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Yeah, I would love it.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
I'd love to see them go kind of find a
way to connect it so that you can't wait to
watch that next episode again, because that's how it used
to be. And I loved it and I did. Yeah
that behind the scenes stuff on Gary Woodland and Camilla
the Jacis as you said, I mean, absolutely heartbreaking, absolutely
inspiring for both of them. I really did like the
you haven't gotten there yet, But I don't think the President's.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Cup stuff, No, yeah, I haven't. I liked that.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
I thought that was cool, so I think you'll enjoy that,
but it's I don't know, it's interesting. We'll see, we'll see.
I hope that's coming back for a season four. That
is one thing I'm like sitting here being like, well,
I wish they did this better, but it better be
back for a season four.

Speaker 4 (18:57):
Yes, yeah, Okay, So you you brought up Rory and
that he's of course one of the favorites this year
for The Masters, but there's some controversy heading into the
Masters about Rory.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
I don't know if you've.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Heard this, but he's being accused of planting seeds of
a fake injury to throw people off.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
Have you heard about this?

Speaker 3 (19:18):
I heard about the elbow, yeah, just I think casually
mentioned that at the Valero or the Houston Open exactly. Yeah, hey,
whatever whatever helps you, Bud.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
I know, right, if you got to go in with
thinking that you're down and you're going to battle back
from an injury and make people think that so that
they don't think you're as solid as we all have
seen you play this year so far.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
Sure, Yeah, that.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
Was another crul April fool's joke too. You always get
the Rory meme with the green jacket on.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Oh gosh, yeah, that is mean.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
That is mean, And I will say like I as
you know, it's it's baffling to me. Scotti Scheffler is,
of course the favorite again this year. It's hard for
him to not, but it is interesting to me that
he's still the overwhelming favorite despite that he hasn't won
anything this year. He's got no wins, three top tens,
he has made all six cuts of the six events

(20:11):
he's been in. But to have him be the favorite
over somebody like Rory, I guess the only difference there
being that Scotty's got the two masters wins, right, and
as you said, it's the horse for the course or
is that right?

Speaker 2 (20:21):
Is that the right?

Speaker 3 (20:22):
Yeah, horses for courses? Yeah, exactly, So, I.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
Mean he's got that.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
I think Rory has the intimate knowledge of Augusta as well,
but Scotty has that knowledge in a way that he
has allowed himself to be propelled to wins, which is
an advantage over Rory and probably why he has that
slight advantage because it's those two and then it's everybody else.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
Yes, it's the field versus Rory and Scotty for sure,
without a doubt. I mean it's like, yeah, he wins
nine times last year. Obviously, you know his strokes gained
tea green and strokes gain approach has been ridiculous. It's
like Tiger asked as far as how elite he's been,
and obviously the hand, the injury with the ravioli and

(21:01):
the wineglass or whatever that was.

Speaker 2 (21:03):
Yeah, what happened?

Speaker 3 (21:04):
We know, I don't We don't really know, Okay, we
Scotty kind of keeps his cards close to the chest.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Where was full swing on that one? We need a
full swing off season exactly.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
Maybe maybe that'll be in the next you know, if
there's a season maybe. Yeah. So from that standpoint, I
mean he's still Scotty Scheffler, and you know he's still
gaining you know, almost three fourths of a stroke on
the field in his putting right where he's been uh,
you know, kind of crappy in the mist. He he's

(21:35):
he's he's coming into form. Him last last week at
at the Houston Open, right, he falls one short to
Min w Le's amazing two putt there on eighteen. Yeah,
and that that reaction was pretty funny. Actually they showed
showed showed Scotty kind of watching, gave a big laugh, yeah,
and then and then walked out of the scoring ten

(21:56):
or whatnot. But yeah, he he is dominant at a
and I think he's he's really coming into form at
the right time. Yeah, you know, so it's it's really
hard to bet against him, even though he you know,
he hasn't won this year, but again I think he's
still he still hasn't finished outside the top twenty five

(22:16):
in any event this year, which is pretty amazing for
not having your a game, It really is.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
Yeah, And that is the thing is I even remember
the year that so I can think the last time
he won, which was twenty twenty three, right, No, twenty
twenty four he won, and I remember thinking like, well,
he can't be this dominant.

Speaker 2 (22:33):
He can't be this dominant.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
It was like every tournament, he's not gonna win this one,
He's not gonna win, you know. It was like nope,
he actually is. He's gonna win seven times or nine
times or whatever. He won in twenty twenty four, and
it is, Yeah, that would be so scotty to come
back and be like, Okay, sorry I hadn't won yet,
but this will be my first win and watch, I'm
gonna go on a tear again. And I promise this
year I won't get arrested.

Speaker 3 (22:55):
Yeah, I think. I think. I think the Augustin and
the Master's Committee or the Augusta National Golf Club does
a little bit job better job than the Louisville Police
Department with their security, So I think there won't be
any mix up there.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
No, there shouldn't be, for sure.

Speaker 3 (23:14):
But yeah, I mean, like I think I read something
as far as you know, a model that they ran
Master's results like a thousand times, and they said I
think Scotty was thirty four percent of the simulation that
he was going to win this year, and then Rory
was twenty four percent, so that you know, those two
combined had a fifty seven percent chance of winning. Right,

(23:36):
So it is those two guys against the field. I mean,
it's it's it's gonna be very interesting looking at what
the what the odds open up at and then what
you know, everybody else is going to be at because
there's no like real clear cut favorite outside of those
two guys.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
No, there's not.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
We don't know much about what's going on, you know,
on on Liz of so to speak, not to tangent,
but if you look at data Golf, which is basically
the OWGR but with live players, Yeah, you've got John
Rahm and fifth in the world, and then Joaquin Neman
at nine, and then Terrell Hatton I want to say,
is fifteen. So you know, those guys are up there,

(24:21):
and I think John Rams played pretty well this season
and so we'll see what he does.

Speaker 1 (24:24):
But anyway, okay, and that is actually not a tangent
because I am curious. I mean, it seems like every
year at the Majors in the last two years, We've
got these Live guys coming in and just dominating. We
had Brooks keepca back in twenty twenty three. We had
Bryson to Shambau coming in and taking over last year.
So which I mean, is this John Rahm's year? Because
he's been pretty quiet since joining Live when it comes

(24:45):
to the majors, we haven't. He hasn't done much. Interestingly enough,
he has. He is really good at Augusta. He's eight
for eight, so he's played in eight times and made
all eight cuts. Of course, won it back in twenty
twenty three, but was t forty five last year, which
was a rise the year after going to the year
after winning it and going to Live to come back
and have a pretty disappointing showing.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
I mean, maybe he learned from it. Maybe this is
his year. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
Yeah, I mean maybe with all the noise to last
year of him going to Live during the off season.

Speaker 2 (25:16):
Right, Yeah, because he's a trader.

Speaker 3 (25:19):
Yeah, because he's a trader, exactly, exactly. No, I'm not
gonna go. I'm gonna go. I'm not gonna go. I'm
gonna go.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
Yeah, I don't need that money. Oh they're gonna offer
me that much.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
Okay, yeah, yes, so maybe that was part of, you know,
kind of playing into his his ill form, right, his
off form in the major championships last year. But you
know from what I was Actually the first time I've
ever watched LIV golf was today.

Speaker 2 (25:44):
Okay, how'd that go?

Speaker 3 (25:46):
It was? Oh, it was interesting. It's Arlow White or
I think it's Arlow White still on the call. Maybe not,
but they you know, it's like announcing a soccer match
kind of the commentating.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
Is then Arlow would be perfect.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
Yes, it's really different. And then the leaderboard is like
so convoluted and hard to follow, but they do show
a lot of golf shots, which is nice. But anyway,
I think Rom finished again in the top ten, so
I don't think he's finished outside the top ten. It
was like top six or something in a live event.

(26:19):
In the last six months or so he's played. He
is in good form. And then obviously Phil Micholson the
other day said that I forgot about him Joaque Neeman.
Is that arguably you're, you know, hands down number one
player in the world and it's not even close.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
So how do you figure Phil? Interesting?

Speaker 3 (26:38):
Interesting, Joaque Neman, who's best finished in a major championship.
I don't think is better than like twentieth or something
like that, but it says I think I could look
that up. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
If Phil says it, it's got to be true. It's
got to be true.

Speaker 3 (26:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
All right, Well, let's.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
Get to the fantasy aspect of this Masters. This year's
Masters we already talked to. Obviously, Scheffler Rory the top
two favorites. Scheffler's a three to one, Rory seven to one.
And this is the first time in Rory's career that
he's got two PGA Tour wins before April. Of course,
we got to watch out for that shoulder or that
elbow injury because it might might really hamper his plane.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
Yeah, quote unquote elbow injury.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
And then Scotty hasn't won this year coming off that
hand injury. Not a quote unquote hand hand injury, just
a mysterious injury. We don't know quite how it happened.
So taking those two off the board, I will say this,
would you agree if you're like in a fantasy golf
league and you haven't used either of them, one of
them is a pretty safe bed, right, Yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
Mean, if you're yeah, you're I goes it would be
Scotty Scheffler, like that's the blue chip player I think.
I mean obviously you you just worry about the skeletons
in the closet. For Rory, I'm just twenty eleven all
the close calls, right. I think I watched the twenty
eighteen Masters the other day, Yeah, when Patrick Reid won
and Rory was I think two shots back to start

(28:02):
the day and just the putter just let him down completely, and.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
Just like it did last year when he last to Bryson.

Speaker 3 (28:08):
Exactly exactly. But you know, maybe with the focus of
the elbow injury, people are you know, he's trying to
come in under the radar, but clearly he's not. But yeah, guys,
outside of that, I mean, as far as picks, you
know what you look for at Augusta, the skills you
look for are I think driving distance has become very important.
I mean there's I think six or seven par fours

(28:31):
over four hundred and seventy five yards, which is egregious.

Speaker 2 (28:34):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (28:35):
Yeah, And so there was a stat that I saw
about I think it was since Decky was the outlier, no,
since Sergio Garcia, so a player hasn't driven the ball
less averaged off the tea less than two hundred and
eighty six or eighty seven yards since Sergia's went in
twenty seventeen. So that writes off a lot of people

(28:57):
that are playing well this year, like Russell Henley, Jane Lowry, right,
those guys have performed well, which aren't bad picks. But
you know, you look at kind of the top tier
outside of Scotty and Rory, and I think it's you know,
you've got to think Colin Morikawa has been playing really well.
He's been trending awesome, great elite iron player doesn't fit

(29:18):
that driving distance category, but the other category is mid
to long irons, and Colin checks that box just like
Rory and Scotty do. And then what a lot, I
think a lot. Vegas likes ludvig Aberg, although he hasn't
been playing that great as of late.

Speaker 1 (29:35):
Yeah, I was kind of surprised because he has been
kind of like the hot new thing, but he has
not been I was like, I don't know that, I
don't know that I would trust him, even though he
finished running up last year in his first year, that
was almost kind of more of a luck thing in
your first year, because you can't say it's because he's
familiar with the.

Speaker 3 (29:51):
Course exactly exactly right. Yeah, So I mean you start
to look at you know, Justin Thomas is another guy, great,
great iron player. His irons have been the best they've
been in a long time. He's peaking at the right time.
You know. He he drives it far enough, and his
short game is really stellar and he you know, he

(30:13):
gets a little bit wonky off the tee as far
as driving accuracy. But Augusta is a golf course that
lends itself to you know, there's no rough there and
it's a little bit wider playing corridors as far as
you know, a US Open goes or maybe a PGA Championship,
So that that's an interesting pick too, you know, if

(30:34):
we want to get into kind of like dark horses
or yea long shots. I mean, I really I think
Robert McIntyre Bobby Mack from Scotland is a really good
at at fifty to one is a really interesting play.
He won the Canadian Open last year and then I
want to say, yeah, he won the Scottish Open last year.

(30:54):
Obviously it was huge, but he's had he's had some
he's been playing well, he's had some time off, he's fresh,
he's coming back over to the States. Augusta is probably
from what the weather forecast looks like, it's gonna be
a little bit cooler but windy, So those greens are
gonna get firmed up, and I think they're going to
get those things real fast. And so that's going to

(31:16):
lend itself to his really good iron approach, playing his
creativity around the greens. So I like him. Another person
I like as a long shot would be Harris English. Okay,
that's that he's played well this this year, and he
you know, he's a Georgia native, I want to say,
and he's played well at Augusta before and he's played

(31:38):
contended in major championships, so that that would be another one.
And then Justin Rose, I think he you know, if
you want a real sleeper, a long shot, he's had
fourteen Masters. You know, he's finished eleven top twenty five finishes.
Excuse me, in his last fourteen starts, so with a
couple runner ups, obviously twenty fifteen and then twenty seventeen

(32:01):
where he lost in the playoff to Sergio so and.

Speaker 1 (32:03):
It doesn't seem like his game is on its decline
in any way either, because it's interesting. I remember watching
Full Swing last season, not this season, and he was,
you know, making the.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
Ryder Cup team, right, wasn't that it?

Speaker 3 (32:16):
I think, Yes, the Ryder Cup. Yeah, we got the
call from Luke Dawn.

Speaker 1 (32:19):
Yeah, that's right. And then I thought, oh gosh, that
was so nice of them to do it. But then
he clearly has earned I mean, he earned his spot
there and he is he's well deserving, and I don't
I am surprised at how well his game is still
hanging on.

Speaker 3 (32:32):
Yes, yeah, it's amazing the longevity. I mean, he's a
guy that takes care of himself, works out really hard,
works on his game, and just hasn't lost the fire
in him. Like yeah, you know, maybe some other people
like Dustin Johnson. Yeah, as of late, it's beIN on
a milk carton. But you know, and then like you know,
Live as far as like Live Picks go, I would say,

(32:54):
we talked about rom Yeah, I think Cam Smith has
an awesome record. Yeahs to National He that guy is
a stud. He's a wizard around the greens. He gets
squirrely with the driver, but his iron play has been
really solid of late. From what he said, he feels
good about his game. I always like cam Smith at Augusta.
I think an intriguing one would be Tyrrell Hatton. He

(33:19):
wanted to dubai or yeah, exactly, the angry elf he
he he is interesting. I mean, I guess Joaque Neman. Yeah,
number one player.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
Yeah, Phil says he's number one.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
That's interesting as well. Obviously Brooks has played well here before,
but we just never know about Brooks.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
You don't know which one's coming.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
Exactly, you know. And Bryson had a great tournament last
year as well, but he was lucky as far as
the side of the draw. He got like no wind
on the morning on Thursday and went out and went bonkers.
So yeah, it's it's, it's it'll be interesting to see.
I would, you know, if I was in a one
and dunleague, probably saved Bryson for maybe like an Oakmont

(34:03):
or a Quail Hollow, and I'd be looking at probably
rom Rom for a one and done. Okay, in for
a live golfer.

Speaker 1 (34:15):
Excuse me, okay, so okay, we've got about four minutes
left because I'm cheap and haven't paid for the longer zoom.
So Jordan Speed hasn't won on the PGA Tour in
sixty starts. Obviously, we know his story at the Masters.
He is a runner up, he wins, then he completely
falls apart and should have been back to back Masters

(34:36):
champion and was not, And then has kind of just
been a fixture on the PGA Tour that we see
and hear about, especially when they're in Texas.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
But that's kind of it.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
And then his story gets brought up every year at
the Masters and we all feel bad for him. Do
you think he's gonna win another major? I mean, let alone,
I'm sure he's gonna get a win on the tour
that I don't doubt, But do you think he has
another major in him?

Speaker 3 (34:59):
Yeah? Speed just a guy. He he is so interesting.
His his you know, he chased distance and then sacrificed
his iron game because of that, which was obviously when
on that Nutty run in twenty fifteen was absolutely elite.
I think he's got I think he's got got one

(35:20):
in the bag. He's he's too much of a competitor.
I think he he's got to clear some of the
stuff upstairs. And again, and like you said, like we
just don't know, like we never know about where Jordan's at.
You know, he was playing well at Valero this week.
I don't know where he finished up.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Think he was t twelve when I saw last today.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
Okay, yeah, he opened up with five hunder and then yeah,
so he seems to be trending in the right direction
for this week. But as far as winning another major, yeah,
I think Jordan's speed will win it. He's I mean,
he's thirty one or thirty two. He's still super young.
He's coming into his quote unquote supposed to be golden years,
although they're getting younger. As far as people's you know,

(36:02):
playing ability, so I think I think he will at
some point. It's it's just a matter of when. It's
like Rory, it's a matter of when.

Speaker 1 (36:08):
Yeah, you know well, And I think Jordan also has
that ability of the creativity and in his play. So
he's got that kind of different way that he looks
at the golf course than other people look at it,
which can only benefit him most of the time. Sometimes
maybe he overthinks it, but I would like to see
him whin again. Although just focusing on this year, I
would really like to see Rory win it so that

(36:29):
I'm not I can't pick him because I've already used him,
I think, But maybe I haven't.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
I'll have to look.

Speaker 1 (36:34):
But I would love, love, love this to be the
year that Rory completes the Grand Slam Grand Slam.

Speaker 3 (36:39):
Yes, I'm a huge Rory Homer. I'm I. I just
got into this, you know, pick him thing with some
friends or whatever. And I purposely, even though I think
Scotty is a better pick, I picked because I'm.

Speaker 2 (36:53):
Yeah, gotta go with your heart sometimes.

Speaker 3 (36:55):
Yes, exactly exactly. I think we are over at your
your place when he hold out that bunker shot in
twenty twenty two, yeah, to shoot sixteen and then through.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
The club, like, oh god, that was so good. I
want more of that this year. I mean more of that.
