Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Raised my.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Earl Nolan.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Multed by the magnificent roller coaster ride.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
That is Houston sports.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Chill lage down for the only homegrown afternoon team is
talking your teams. Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
The A Team.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
It's almost two oh two here on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
It is the A Team. He's wex I may see.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
We are not I repeat, not gonna start the show
talking about the local baseball team.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
I won't have it. Instead, I want to get excited.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
I have unconfirmed sore telling me unconfirmed I might add,
sources telling me that Christian Harris looked amazing at practice today,
and that is what I want to lead the show with,
because if Christian Harris looked amazing, well, then basically you
can start planning the parade.

Speaker 5 (01:13):
Wex, wex and ac here with you. Cole Thompson as well.
This is the A Team. A Thursday afternoon edition of
the program. We will get into Astros on deck a
little bit before they have first pitch tonight with the
Baltimore Orioles, So we'll do that in the early portion
of the five o'clock I.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Just say you're already talking about baseball. I promise I
was listening to you. I don't think you were all right.
Detexans had a joint practice today, the last important day
before September seventh, for the twenty two to twenty to
thirty five players that will matter most to the Houston
Texans this twenty twenty five NFL season, because this is

(01:55):
a legitimate opponent, certainly more capable of doing something great
this year than Carol, a team you just played last
year and sure would like to have that one over
a team that is in a lot of changes for
different reasons. Both of these offenses made major changes in
the offseason and today's joint practice those that were there,

(02:17):
and obviously the players and teams themselves got a chance
to measure up against one another, clearly against the other
team's respective defense. Texans made changes because the offense was inept,
their offensive line was poor, their offensive line coach arguably
and I know Mike Devlin worked here, arguably the worst
offensive line coach the Texans have ever had, and they
have a new OC and there was a big article

(02:39):
written this week about that. We didn't get a whole
lot into it, but Oh yeah, our really good quarterback
has more of a say in what's going on on
the field after he stops talking to the coordinator when
he's watching what the other eleven guys in front of
him are about to do to him. The Lions made
offensive changes because they were awesome. Their offensive coordinator got

(03:00):
hired as a head coach. He took a bunch of
offensive staff members with them. They had to make multiple
changes on the offensive line, not because they wanted to,
but because their center retired and one of their linemen decided,
I think for family reasons, hanging out in Nashville for
nine million dollars and protecting cam Ord was better than

(03:20):
protecting Jared Goff and maybe playing for a super Bowl.
So they have to figure things out this year, just
like the Texans have to figure things out this year.
But yeah, they had a joint practice this morning, and
unfortunately none of the three of us were there, but
rather we were preparing.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
For this program. Do have some information.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
Aaron Wilson was there and have some information about what
took place and who wasn't there yesterday. Probably got a
pretty good idea of who would not be practicing today.
When the Texans had their final practice. That list included linebacker,
starting middle linebacker for the Texans, or starting inside linebacker.
I don't know how they want to want to call

(03:57):
it because they are not firm with how they deploy
their team. Sometimes it's essentially a four two five, other
times it's a four to three. But Aziz al Shaier
did not practice yesterday, and I thought that meant likely
he would not practice today, and that's exactly what happened.
Is expected to be a minor situation, according to Tamiko Ryans,

(04:17):
who spoke after practice today and didn't get into specifics,
but nothing of great consequence. However, that means, well, the
other guys have to practice EJ. Speed, Henry to Atoa
and someone who has gotten I'm sure today now the
best work of his preparation for the season, that is
Christian Harris, each of their three linebackers. And when you
add aga speed into it, just I will so the

(04:38):
conversation sounds even funnier. Christian Harris brings something that none
of the other three do, that is speed. He can
he's probably kills wex and again one of the players
we're talking about, his last name is speed. Now while
he is faster than most. I don't think he's faster
than Christian Harris on the field. They've run a bunch
of different combinations in practice and I'm sure they did

(05:00):
that today and I think they'll do a lot more
of it when they face Jimmy Garoppolo or Matt Stafford
or Stetson Bennett on the opening week when they take
on the Rams. They have that luxury their top four linebackers,
I think can really make a difference for this team.
But yeah, if Christian Harris if the plan, and this
is something I kind of asked Emiko yesterday at the
end of practice, is he happy with where things are

(05:22):
injury wise? They had a plan for Damian Pierce, they
had a plan for Christian Harris. While there was some
teeth gnashing outside media wise, why is Christian Harris not
doing this? Something must still be wrong. Why is he
on the roster if he's not practicing? And when is
Damian Pierce coming back? Because they're trying to get them
ready to play an eighteen week schedule, a seventeen game schedule,

(05:44):
they don't really have to practice in July or August.
They need to be ready for the season, but at
all signs point to both of those plans for those
two players being played out very nicely. And Christian Harris
this will likely be the last of his significant work.
The team will look a whole lot different when they
get back to Houston and they go through cut day,
because that is basically what happens after Saturday's game, and

(06:07):
then they have the opportunity claim players and then basically
that's the fifty three that starts a game week for
the Rams. Christian Harris being a part of this defense
is extremely important as they hope to be even better
than they were last year, and CJ. Gardner Johnson's availability
is something that is very important. Jimmy Ward's availability is

(06:28):
an interesting topic for the Texans. Address today by Demiko Ryans,
so before we get into that, will allow him to
describe that. But yeah, this is one of the joint practices.
To me, I've said it many many times before, and
I'm not at all surprised that Dan Campbell is just
like Demiko Ryans, and he was talking about it yesterday.
Dan was and he talked about it even more today.

(06:49):
The value of a joint practice to them tenfold more
so than what you can get on a Saturday or
a whatever day preseason game for your season. The preseason
game matters a ton to the guys in roster spots
forty five through ninety. The season matters a ton on
Thursday when you play the joint practice for the top

(07:11):
forty five forty four players on your roster, because they're
the ones that are going to be out there. It
is absolutely a measuring stick. You had Amon Ross Saint
Brown going against Derek Stingley Junior. You've got Jamison Williams
going up against Kamari Lassiter, and from my understanding, all
four of them had wins at different times throughout the day.
It's going to happen. You can be the best in
the league and you're not going to win every matchup.

(07:33):
Miko Collins had a nice day. From what I understand,
these are the best parts of camp. Not at all
surprised that Dan Campbell and Dmico Ryans want to have
a joint practice and specifically sought each other's teams out
to do so.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Yeah, look, anything that helps any part of the team.
I know that we're talking about the defense again. It
feels like they keep getting reinforcements, whether it's during this
preseason or the offseason and adding to what was already
easily the best unit of the team. But I tell you,

(08:08):
I am getting cautiously optimistic about the offense with each
passing day just because of things that people are saying.
And we talked a little bit about this yesterday.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
But look if.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
The weapons and you've talked at nauseum about the specifically
the wide receiver weapons the CJ. Stroud's gonna have at
his disposal, if they're even like a fraction of the
hype that they're given they've been given, I think I
think that's fair to say they've been hyped up this preseason.

Speaker 5 (08:35):
Yeah, before camp started, I thought they had a better
wide receiver room than they did a year ago at
the beginning of the year, and I definitely feel even
more strongly about that now because I do think both
of their two picks in this draft from Io State
intended to be on the field this year, have shown
everything necessary to say, yeah, they don't just need to
find their way on the field.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
You want them on the field. You want them making
plays for you.

Speaker 5 (08:56):
And I think both of them will be able to
talk about Higgins and Nolan, obviously, I think we should
all be very confident in what Nico Collins and Christian
Kirk will be able to do. This the starting group
first and ten, we'll say the Rams screw up the
kickoff first and ten from the forty on September seventh,
midafter the.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
Kickup and kickoff in today's NFL, by the way.

Speaker 5 (09:16):
Well when you don't land it in the landing zone
when you came to the twenty one yard line, the
other team gets the ball first in ten on the forty.
So we're going to say that happens. So first and
ten from the forty. The Texans are going to send
out their five man offensive line which was seen out
there today. You know, Jake Andrews at center, the guards
of ed Ingram and Lake and Tomlinson, the tackles of

(09:37):
Tay Nursery and Titus Howard, A Dalton Schultz will be
out there, Dick Chubb will be out there, and three
wide receivers will be out there out there. Correct in
my opinion, Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, and Jayden Higgins along
with c. J. Stroud, that give me the eleven that
takes the field for snap number one in my opinion,

(09:58):
on Sunday September seventh.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
How many are scripts after that.

Speaker 5 (10:01):
I just think we're gonna see a lot of three
wide out lineups, and that means you're going to see
Higgins and or nol And and or both of them
alongside Nico Collins quite a bit. Nico Collins should rarely
step off the field. The other three top four receivers, Higgins, Noel, Kirk,
and I do think Hutch is gonna see a lot
more consistent involvement in the offense, But those other three

(10:24):
guys are gonna be This is a package for them,
This is a package for you. Occasionally in a four
wide outset, all four of them are going going to
be on the field. And I don't want to again,
I'm trying not to push back Hutch too much because
I think he will be a factor in their offense.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
But I just think they can do so much with
that group right there.

Speaker 5 (10:38):
And there are also gonna be spots where it's just
Kirk and just Nico, and you're gonna have both Kate
Stover and Dalton Schultz on the field. A Dulton Schultz
is gonna go out on a route and Kate Stover
is going to bury a defensive lineman and put him
on his back, and Nick Chubb is just gonna run
through the hole.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Think about what you just said now, and think about
what you just said when you said it originally. The
wide receiver room this year is better than last year's,
especially after not especially that's that's the wrong word, even
after losing Tank Dell to injury and Stefan Diggs to
free agency.

Speaker 4 (11:13):
Yeah, the wide receiver room.

Speaker 5 (11:14):
When you began the season last year, your top three
were Digs, Dell, and Nico, And now your top four
are the four we've just been talking about. I don't
think there's I don't really don't even think it's close.
And I love, love, love love Tank Dell.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
Everybody does. I've never met somebody that doesn't, except.

Speaker 5 (11:31):
For offense as an NFL player, as a weapon, for CJ,
as a friend.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
But I just I was.

Speaker 5 (11:41):
I actually thought more highly of Stefan Diggs for what
I actually thought he brought to the team off the field.
Then I thought, what is he going to bring to
the team on the field. He's an underneath receiver, he's
a small yards per carry receiver, he's a small YAK receiver,
and he's technically a small receiver at this point.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
In his career, years are probably behind him by the
time he even gets here.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
I mean I just think they're better.

Speaker 5 (12:07):
I mean, we'll it'll all play out and it'll be
You'll have to take it all into account that Does
see JA actually have more time? Is he calling a
better game because he's evolved in the game? Does he
have a better OC? So maybe I'm kind of putting
it all together to say that, but the proof will
be in the However the saying goes.

Speaker 3 (12:23):
There's putting involved, putting and Bill Cosby is not involved.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
So do you really like IAW?

Speaker 5 (12:29):
I have to think a very large chunk of our listeners.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
Uh huh, don't know what I'm talking about putting and
Bill Cosby together? What about jell O putting pops? I
mean that's so old.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
I know I am going Matt Thomas here, aren't I
fall Matt Thomas. I just maybe there's no reference. I
know he's listening. That's why I did that. That's part
of why I said that. Yeah, that's probably Bill Cosby
as a pitch man is really old news. Did you
rules the other day?

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Tell you what?

Speaker 3 (12:57):
When we come back, I will jump into an another
aspect of the Texans that's actually not very savory, and well.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
It's maybe it's not a part of the Texans.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
I don't think it will be much longer, just based
on what I woke up to and everybody else woke
up to. But I will tell you a Bill Cosby
reference that will absolutely make your toes curl when we
come back.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
The a t on Sports Talk seven ninety I.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
Just asked Gordy the most Gordy question ever.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
I said, what's better the new Naked Gun movie with
Liam Neeson or the new Happy Gilmour sequel, neither of
which I have seen? Have you seen Happy Gilmore yet?
I've seen Happy Gilmore the first one.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
No, I've not seen the sea you saw Happy Gilmore one? Correct?
You like? This guy has been listening to the show
this week. I've been hosting the show. What will you
watch for?

Speaker 3 (13:56):
This is a dumb question because it's completely retorted off
what will you watched next?

Speaker 4 (14:02):
On Netflix? First?

Speaker 3 (14:04):
Happy Gilmore Too? Or the Dallas Cowboys. It's eight parts.
It'll take you like an hour and a half to
get through Happy Gilmore two?

Speaker 4 (14:14):
Okay, Happy Gilmore Too? Was that better? I don't know.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
I'm just you disappoint me so much when it comes
to what you watch and how you watch it. I
was talking to somebody about you yesterday and they were like, oh, yeah,
WEX always talking about how he's never going to see
this movie unless it's on cable with the commercials. I
know it. I was over it. I was at a
maintenance center. I'll just leave it at that. And everybody

(14:38):
there knows us and listens to the show and watches
the show when they can, and they were making fun
of you for that. Not making fun still a bad way,
but you know, just why hasn't he seen this?

Speaker 4 (14:50):
Why hasn't he seen that? And I said, I don't know.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
I mean, if we spent time on a different day,
maybe a special Saturday show, you can come out and
hang out with us and we can talk about it.

Speaker 4 (14:58):
The list of things that need.

Speaker 5 (14:59):
To be that haven't seen, that even people aren't even
aware of, is embarrassingly long.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
When do you think is the next time that people
will convince not one, but both of us to take
time out of our Saturday to host a show.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
I didn't say host to show. Oh okay, go hang
out with us on an appearance. Let's go catch the
different college football over Big City Wings.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
Come hang out with us. I would love that.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
Sounds more like it, doesn't it.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
You know what? Cole was saying, Hey, we should go
to Big City Wings again soon, and I said, yes.

Speaker 5 (15:24):
We all say that to each other all the time
and then we do it, which is the best part.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
Well, yeah, you know what, maybe that's what we need
to do to sacrifice, or it's not really a sacrifice.

Speaker 4 (15:32):
Or we're not sacrificing anywhere. Actually it's actually hooking us up.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
But to break this Astro's curse, hold on, I have
to make good on my teas. Oh okay, we were
talking about Bill Cosby in the first segment, because of
course we were here on August twenty first, twenty twenty five.
Do you remember the Cosby Mysteries show on NBC. So
this is after the Cosby Show clearly, but before all

(15:56):
of the allegations. And I saw this on Instagram the
other day and it's just why I will never ever
leave the Internet for any reason whatsoever. It was a
spot on TV at the time, clearly, I think this
was probably early nineties, maybe mid nineties, and it was
about the Cosby Mystery but it involved somebody getting their
drink spiked, and it shows that in the commercial, and

(16:19):
then it's like a go to line. Whatever Cosby said
was just so perfect in light of everything we know now,
and I just got a kick out of it. And
I thought, I sent it to you, but you know,
I'll send you stuff all the time and you'll ignore it.

Speaker 5 (16:32):
It would be termed and described as a short lived series.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
What year did start?

Speaker 5 (16:37):
Ninety five started in nineteen ninety four, the end of
the end of January, and it's one season run.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
I lasted a little over a year. Wow, that's even
more pathetic than I thought. Was this before or after?
He did the forgettable Ghost Dad film? Also forgettable?

Speaker 4 (16:53):
You remember it? I saw it in the theater. It
was free, it was after.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
It was one of those radio hookups things, Hey go
see this free previous and those are typically not good movies,
although there was one that really bucks the trend. Anchorman.
I saw in that setting with Chance McLean and my parents,
and it was good.

Speaker 4 (17:14):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
It was right up until the scene where he had
a massive situation. Oh, the scene where Luke Wilson got
his arms ripped off.

Speaker 4 (17:21):
That's not the one. Uh.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Veronica points it out to everyone as the camera slowly
zooms out to see what she's talking about.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
Oh my, yeah, yeah, I know it's scene.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
And then Chance leaned over my mom to tell me, boy,
I wish I was here watching this with my parents
right now because he's such a Jersey.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
That's a pretty low I was. It was.

Speaker 5 (17:44):
It's not a I mean, I know there was a
breathtaking heiney scene, but it really wasn't that out of here.
You don't see it to watch with your exactly, to
watch with your parents.

Speaker 4 (17:51):
It was that big of a deal. Why can't we
say heiney?

Speaker 3 (17:55):
I hate that word? Why I just do. I've always
hated that word.

Speaker 4 (17:58):
Are you one of those people that doesn't like the
word moist? No?

Speaker 5 (18:00):
It doesn't bother me all right, all day from yesterday
when we signed off to today.

Speaker 4 (18:05):
This is a segment two dude, I got and.

Speaker 3 (18:07):
I was just about to get to the mountain where
I say, look, it's two twenty five. We're supposed to
break at twenty eight, and if we don't say something
regarding sports soon, Wex's head is gonna explode.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
I mean, I know.

Speaker 5 (18:19):
In the Cosby Shows, one of the year's opening themes.
They were playing softball. That's all I know. I mean,
if that was gonna get us back?

Speaker 3 (18:26):
Yeah, I only all I remember is when he's like
dancing in a tuxedo and it's super awkward.

Speaker 5 (18:31):
That was way down the line. They were already they
were later season hit by then.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
What like, how old was Rudy at that point? Was
she an adult yet?

Speaker 6 (18:39):
No?

Speaker 4 (18:39):
I don't think an adult quite yet.

Speaker 3 (18:41):
Were you attracted to what was the daughter's name they
ended up marrying or dating Lenny Kravitz Lisaea? Were you
ever attracted to her?

Speaker 4 (18:50):
She's good looking lady, so yes, Why does that question
bother you so much?

Speaker 5 (18:56):
Were you ever attracted to her? I mean, like, well,
I can't. I most like, this is a family, it's
a sitcom. Yeah, there's a pretty fairly typical formula. Two
to three kids, most of them either and I would
wait on some of the kids to even comment on

(19:17):
for respect to their ages and respect to people in humanity. No,
I'm not saying it's impossible and it never happens, but
more often than not, the cast, the mom, the kids,
they're good looking people.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
You have Felicia Rashad does nothing for me, Although if
you asked, the general public would argue, were you attracted
to her?

Speaker 5 (19:39):
The general public would probably be the scale would tip
in the yes side.

Speaker 4 (19:43):
Really, no question about it. What if you asked? What
if you asked? Were you attracted to Maggie Seaver? Who
had a better career? Who had a better career?

Speaker 7 (19:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (19:54):
Well, what else? NBC? What else did she do? She
was a one note?

Speaker 3 (19:58):
What else did he do besides be Jordan's play football
and was on TV?

Speaker 4 (20:02):
Remember his football career? Player?

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Great star for the Vikings? He wasn't a star star?
What was his best game exactly? You can't remember, Thomas?
He probably would remember something.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
That's mean you call him.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
I'll give him the nod on better career Thursday? How
many different it was a huge He was a huge
part of basketball.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
Yeah, I mean, what do you want from this guy?

Speaker 4 (20:33):
He hosted the show.

Speaker 5 (20:34):
That everybody knew for a decade about basketball.

Speaker 4 (20:38):
How many other shows there were?

Speaker 3 (20:39):
Every time every time saw Jordan anywhere, there was a
mod being his caddie.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
So dumb of a modern shot to be the most
important person that's ever laced them up?

Speaker 4 (20:50):
What a dumb idea that was?

Speaker 3 (20:51):
Yeah, but it also lent itself to the argument that
if it weren't for him being very good friends with him,
would he even have this gig.

Speaker 4 (20:57):
That's perception, that's just reality. Ran the league man, would you, hey, man,
what else do you need? I need? I need you
to make sure I get paid a lot? What else
do you need?

Speaker 3 (21:06):
I gotta you gotta just gotta get out of the
way of all my endorsements.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
You got it?

Speaker 5 (21:10):
What else do you need? I'd like you to hire
a madra shot? Okay, Like he went down his list
of things with.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
There were worse options. It's not he was bad on camera.
That's the thing we're saying. He only had he was fine.
I wish during the nineties, at the peak of his powers,
Michael Jordan would have gone to the executives at NBC
and said, all right, you have to hire a modern shot,
but please, for the love of God, get rid of
Bob Costas.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
I hate that little midget. That's what you should have said.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
Well, how do you know Michael hated him. Michael didn't
like Bob Costas. There's no way he liked except for
when Bob Costas would gas him up every chance he got.
But you know, if you asked Michael Jordan right now,
truth serum injected and all that?

Speaker 4 (21:51):
All right?

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Your final shot against Utah because the Wizard's part never happened.
If if you could have your choice, who's calling that
final shot? You want Bob Costas or Marv Albert. He's
taking Marv one hundred out of one hundred times. Could
you imagine how much better that call would have been
if it weren't Jordan open Chicago with the lead and then.

Speaker 4 (22:12):
Somebody stepped on him right after that. You remember it
word for word because it's the shot. I don't remember it, Yes,
you do? What was it again? I'm not doing it?
Then they take the lead, I'm not sure.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
Dancing Monkey, four time Pro bowler, Ring of Honor in Minnesota.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
He was a pro bowler. Yes, he was good at football.
I don't know if you know this. Nobody remembers really
good at football. Amazing. He also hung out at OJ's
place on the weekends. Yeah, sure did. All right, what
do we miss this segment? Everything? We will?

Speaker 3 (22:39):
We will get to more from Demiko Ryans on the
Jimmy Ward situation, plus Dimico's counterpart very highly complimentary of
your Houston Texans all of that, but next, it's the
best of.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
BECs the A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (23:02):
Did you all see this?

Speaker 8 (23:03):
We should be.

Speaker 9 (23:03):
Putting out between five and fifteen posts a day.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
Four hundred people were arrested for things that they said
on social media.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
History repeats itself type.

Speaker 4 (23:13):
Bang, you'll succeed.

Speaker 9 (23:15):
Never doubt that you're the one who post go one building.

Speaker 4 (23:20):
You're the best of X. Nothing's gonna ever.

Speaker 9 (23:24):
Top you know you're the best of X, posting every
single day. You're the best of it X breaking the
entire internet.

Speaker 3 (23:39):
All right, we bring you the best of X, the
best of IG, best of book of faces, Snapchat, all
that good stuff.

Speaker 4 (23:49):
But it is from X today. At least that's where
I saw this.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
I think you and I and Cole would agree that
we have, pound for pound, the best broadcast crew in
all of Major League Bay right on sport Space City
Home Network from the television side, and obviously right here
on Sports Talk seven ninety with Robert Ford and Steve Sparks.
But as as far as TKM Blummer goes, I mean

(24:13):
they will. They were getting a little punchy the other day.
Well put it this way, when Fromber's wheels were falling
off yesterday during the first inning, you could tell that
it was like, all right, this is going to be
a long afternoon. Potentially we're gonna loosen ourselves up, because
that's how the dialogue started going, especially when they got
Julia involved telling stories about her children's book. They're just
they're up for a good time, and I like that.

(24:35):
You don't want a stiff booth. If you will, you
don't want boring. It's baseball already. You need to have
some pizaz put in there sometimes, and that can include
giving away free stuff. Now I'm not saying that I'm
encouraging Todd Kallis and Jeff Blum to pay for a

(24:56):
round of whatever at a local establishment. But I'm not
saying I'm not because this morning it was brought to
my attention very early via Front Office Sports Instagram, I
mean x account that the Cubs television broadcasters promised to
buy mozzarella sticks for an entire bar in Iowa if

(25:20):
the Cubs turned a six four to three double play.
They did this in the top of the fifth inning,
and after they said that it took exactly two pitches
for it to happen.

Speaker 10 (25:34):
If he hits a ground ball, of a short start,
the six four three, Yeah, that's stright. Will you buy
Manzi sticks for everybody at the Corner Town?

Speaker 7 (25:44):
Absolutely?

Speaker 10 (25:48):
I don't know if they have mozzarella sticks the quartertown,
the one to one outside. I'll go have seas with you, okay,
one cubs, let's go.

Speaker 2 (26:01):
Lots are all.

Speaker 4 (26:01):
Sticks for everybody.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Connor tappro meat up, flip it and fire it.

Speaker 4 (26:13):
Look.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
I don't know if I what I like better the
fact that this came to be organically on the air,
or how excited they were that they were going to
be buying all of those Nazi sticks.

Speaker 4 (26:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (26:24):
Now, Corner tap Room came up because it is in
the hometown of the picture.

Speaker 4 (26:30):
It was on the mound at that particular time.

Speaker 5 (26:33):
They have locations right there in that nice little area.
They do not serve food, but they do have a
restaurant attached to them. It's called Happy Joe's. Oh yeah, yeah,
it's called Happy Joe's. They have a pretty much a
full menu. Pizza is one of their main items, but

(26:56):
they do have appetizers. Are pizza sticks covered with mozzarella
served with Italian dipping sauce. And if you heard from
John with Jim, he specifically called them Mazi sticks, Like
he's definitely familiar with the item. They do sell them,
and I'm sure Joe and Jim will follow through.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
Well, I mean, how much do you think that would cost?
First of all, because those are typically on the appetizer menu.
They are, Yeah, three options, small, medium, and large.

Speaker 4 (27:28):
What are the prices. It's about fifteen fifty for a
large order. That's a lot of money.

Speaker 3 (27:34):
Nine for a small Yeah, that's a lot of money.
If everybody is there, it's a packed tavern, and it
will be after watching that inning.

Speaker 5 (27:42):
I mean, I'm sure they said, here's what we'll do.
Here's a hundo for me, a hundo from you, and
we'll buy them a couple hundred dollars worth of Mazi
sticks on us. Thank yes, it would be thanks for
helping to raise Colin ray our picture on the mound.
It's a lot better than when people with microphones say, huh,

(28:06):
that ain't happening. If that happens, I'll walk to work
backwards overnight in the snow, and then it happens, and
then well it has to do snow first.

Speaker 3 (28:16):
But I've I've offered many times that I would go
streaking down West tim or if something happened that was
good for Houston sports and it never happens.

Speaker 5 (28:25):
I'm sure another title is on the way, not sure who,
and I'm not sure when.

Speaker 4 (28:28):
I'm sure it'll be here.

Speaker 3 (28:29):
Like if I did that in the Galleria, for example,
how long would it take for me to get arrested?

Speaker 4 (28:35):
Uh, there's I mean you're talking.

Speaker 5 (28:37):
You're just basically saying, there's the cops that would be called,
because aren't they going to already be there?

Speaker 4 (28:41):
I mean, you're you're gonna go down pretty quickly.

Speaker 3 (28:43):
So I'm saying as highly trafficked as that exact part
of West Timer is, Like I could pick any part
of West Time or technically I think go all the
way up to the Beltway.

Speaker 5 (28:50):
I'm a pretty sure it would make its way onto
social media long before you got arrested, though.

Speaker 4 (28:55):
Oh yeah, like instantaneously.

Speaker 5 (28:57):
Yeah, I don't know that the station is filmed it,
but somebody would be well, I don't know the station
would even be behind it.

Speaker 4 (29:04):
No, No, we don't do that anymore.

Speaker 3 (29:06):
Once upon a time we had people that did that
that were employed here, but that went the way of.

Speaker 4 (29:10):
The specific enough that it actually had to play.

Speaker 5 (29:13):
I didn't just say double play, didn't say get out
of the inning, didn't say fly out.

Speaker 4 (29:16):
It had to be yeah, six x four to three.
And that's what they got. But two pitches after they
say it.

Speaker 5 (29:21):
And this is what we got from the Cubs in
the last twenty four hours. This is the most important
story from the Cubs in the last twenty four hours.
I better council talking about the injury that Kyle Tucker's
been playing through and the imaging issues they had in
finding the broken bone on Kyle Tucker that he's been
playing through.

Speaker 4 (29:40):
This guy's been like he's got Maybe.

Speaker 5 (29:42):
It's not a Cob Cubs problem, and maybe it's not
an astros problem.

Speaker 4 (29:46):
Maybe it's a brittle bones Tucker problem. He is yowming.

Speaker 5 (29:50):
No, he played through it. They didn't have to sideline him.
He just kept playing very very badly, but kept playing.

Speaker 4 (29:56):
And getting booed.

Speaker 5 (29:57):
Yeah, getting booed when he didn't run one out, not
getting bo for you know, hitting into a billion outs,
which he did.

Speaker 4 (30:03):
I think that's why he was getting married. I don't
think so. Didn't they they had it. There had have
been a smattering. I'm sure there was. I'm sure there was. Well,
you're right. He is mister glass. Now we can call
him that.

Speaker 5 (30:13):
He made a baseball play, he got hurt, and they
he just wanted to play through it the heat. But
in their case, they did know it was broken. He
did know it was broken, and in June they just decided.
He decided he wanted to play and they said okay,
and it healed. According to Craig Council though, he was
asked if they've done more imaging, and.

Speaker 4 (30:31):
He said, no, what are the odds? Come on, man?

Speaker 3 (30:36):
What The only thing that would be better of is
if this was in his lower leg, the same lower
leg as last year. Here's the play where Kyle Tucker
got hurt. That's what the Cubs media was doing over
the last twenty four hours. It's unbelievable. And now I
definitely think he's not going to stay there. I don't
know why why, I don't know. They said you want
to play, and he said yes because I let him.

(30:58):
He's going to make it a trifecta. He's gonna go
to a new team and have an airline fracture next year.
Hopefully we'll see that. You know what, Cole, if you're
gonna say that, you better say it on the air. No,
hopefully I did sit on the air.

Speaker 11 (31:09):
Hopefully he leaves Chicago's what I'm saying, not the airline fracture.

Speaker 4 (31:13):
I still wanted to play for the Cubs because you're
a white Sox fan.

Speaker 3 (31:17):
I hate the Cubs. I hate the Coubs more than
any other team in sports.

Speaker 4 (31:21):
I get it. I'm not even mad at you for it.

Speaker 3 (31:22):
All right, we will get back to Texans conversation next.
There's some good, there's also some very bad. Potentially, it's
all coming up.

Speaker 1 (31:36):
The a on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (31:55):
You know I have to say something, and I know
it's gonna irritate you, but I don't care.

Speaker 4 (32:00):
What do you have to say?

Speaker 3 (32:01):
This is prominently featured on yacht Rock Documentary on HBO
Max or whatever they're calling it.

Speaker 4 (32:06):
These days, but you still probably haven't watched. Why is
there a yacht rock doc White? Is there? I mean,
I'll listen to the music. I haven't. That one is
more likely he could talk about it. Oh my gosh.

Speaker 3 (32:17):
See this is why, admittedly, if I did a show
with Matt Thomas, we'd never get anything done.

Speaker 4 (32:22):
That's podcast material. It's not podcast material.

Speaker 5 (32:25):
The Clanton and Thomas yacht rock pod coming to you soon.

Speaker 4 (32:31):
He'll wear a captain's hat.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
Did I do you know that he autographed a glossy
photo of himself on a boat wearing a captain's hat,
and it's hanging prominently in my theater bathroom.

Speaker 5 (32:42):
It sounds more like you're saying, Hey, guess which Sports
Talk seven ninety host signed a personal glossy photo of
him on a boat wearing a captain's at Matt Thomas.

Speaker 4 (32:51):
Wait, yeah, and that would be right.

Speaker 3 (32:53):
You wouldn't It would never have gotten that far into
the sentence. Guess which Sports Talk seven ninety hosts?

Speaker 5 (32:59):
It's always the answer, signed a could still be Sean
photo of himself still could be Sean.

Speaker 4 (33:05):
Sean doesn't do autographs anymore.

Speaker 5 (33:07):
Hey, man, I really enjoyed your playing career. I got
this photo of you in the number twelve in your
Vikings career. Would you sign this for you? Absolutely? Love
that you're a fan of the game. Love you listen
to our show every morning. It's great to have you here.
Why wouldn't he? I would if I played football in
the NFL and someone came with a photo of me
for my playing career and asked me if I wouldn't
mind signing it all right, the fans.

Speaker 3 (33:25):
How many things have you signed in your life doing
what you do? It's a public profession.

Speaker 4 (33:30):
Three to five. That's about saying you can count on
one hand.

Speaker 3 (33:33):
Like me, I've signed a hat, I've signed a napkin
at a restaurant.

Speaker 4 (33:38):
Yeah, nothing, nothing major. What do you think?

Speaker 5 (33:40):
People don't really have items to bring to my non
existent signing sessions?

Speaker 3 (33:45):
Are you like me when you meet an athlete or
a celebrity, because we do that a lot here in
our job.

Speaker 4 (33:50):
Yeah, we do. But like I've never wanted their autograph.
I've always wanted a picture.

Speaker 5 (33:55):
Things are definitely different now, but I think that generation
isn't new, it's the last handful of years there's But
there's other people out there. They don't want your autograph either.
They want your autograph because they want to sell it. Right,
I want your autograph. They want their item to be
of greater value. I know they're pretending to care about
your career, but rather they're just autograph hounds.

Speaker 11 (34:13):
So you just want a picture, That's what I'm saying.
So you're just Troy Barnes from community. No, no, no, can't
disappoint a picture. But this is not about social media.
By the way, I want a picture with an athlete
or a celebrity because I want to be able to
hang it in my home.

Speaker 4 (34:28):
Like that's the whole point. It's not online. I hate
Tommy Losorda fletch good stuff.

Speaker 3 (34:36):
You can't talk about my modern references and then bring
fletch to the day.

Speaker 5 (34:39):
Talking about hanging pictures of baseball stars celebrities up on
the wall.

Speaker 4 (34:44):
That's what the police chief did.

Speaker 3 (34:46):
In order of the highest regard, where would Dan Campbell
complimenting your football team fall in the in the hierarchy
of highly respected coaches in twenty twenty five in the NFL.

Speaker 5 (35:00):
Actually rate a little bit higher than Andy Reid, really
Jim or John Harbaugh. Jim Harbaugh because they would say
it because you're about to play them and it's a
huge game, and they're just it's I want to be nice,
and I know they're having a joint practice and that's
specifically why I was asked about them. But it's not
about they're about to play us. I'm not giving you

(35:20):
any bullet board And Sarah, I really love what they do.
Ask me all the questions you want. You're gonna get
nothing but positivity. That's what you're gonna get from a
team in the AFC that you're fighting with. No, just
just just some team that they decided to get together with.
But there is more to it. They didn't just decide
to get together with them. They specifically chose this team.
It's one of the things I think the I mean,

(35:40):
it works really well for some teams that are good
because it can really pay off for them.

Speaker 4 (35:44):
The other teams are just kind of stuck.

Speaker 5 (35:46):
Like the Texans set their preseason schedule and they set
their schedule of who they want to joint practice with
around that because that's what they want to do. So, yeah,
Dan Campbell's saying good things about the Texans. I think
that actually is probably from the heart when it's coming
from the coffee drinking Dan Campbell, what do you say
about the Texans?

Speaker 3 (36:02):
Let's find out, because he went out of his way
and it was lengthy at least for him to talk
about the Houston Texans.

Speaker 12 (36:09):
Man, they're on the way up. They've been on the
way up. Just the nature, the way they go about
their business, the way they practice. To talk about you know,
coach Ryan's over there. I just got a lot of
respect for him. And when you do things the way
they do them Sundays, they go out, they run, they hit,
they finish. They you're gonna be in every game. You're
gonna have a chance in every game. They're a young,

(36:30):
talented roster. They're guys that love ball. I mean those
guys over there, Brad and I liked a lot of
those guys too, now you know, and it's like, okay,
I can see that. So we're excited to see them today.
And it's a promising young roster that does it right.
Good coaching, quarterbacks, good player, and he's only going to
get better and better. They got weapons. You know, they're

(36:51):
gonna be a I think they're going to be a
juggernaut for years to come.

Speaker 5 (36:54):
Is what I think you mentioned Brad there, that's the
general manager of the Lions. Players that they liked the
obviously the Texans, Nick Casaria and Demiko Ryans clearly liked.
Whether it was in the draft or in a free agency.
It's been a pretty good short term run for both coaches.
Two years for Demiico Ryans winning fifty nine percent of
his games, A four year run into year five for

(37:14):
Dan Campbell, winning fifty eight percent of his games. Both
have participated in four playoff games, with their teams splitting
those four games. And if you had Demiko Ryans read
that entire quote and change the names weren't necessary, you
wouldn't have been able to tell the difference because I'm
sure he feels the exact same way about the Lions.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
Well I was, but to ask, you know, this stems
not just from right now, this stems from going up
against each other in the NFC when Dimiko is part
of the forty nine ers. I would have to think,
because didn't they coach off against each other before Dimiko
came to the Texans in a very highly charged NFC
championship game.

Speaker 4 (37:50):
If I don't recall correctly.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
The Lions and the Niners and twenty one or twenty two,
I feel like they played each other and didn't have
been at that time.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
It was the next year they played each other his
first year with Houston.

Speaker 4 (37:59):
So after Demiico left, all right, well there goes that theory.

Speaker 3 (38:03):
I look, I'm like you when Dan Campbell says something,
I don't think it's coach speak, but I feel like
I'm gonna say that in ten years from now he's
one of the few guys. And it's not to say
that like Andy Reid's not genuine or Mike Tomlin's not genuine,
but they've just been doing it for so long, And

(38:24):
to me, when I see Dan Campbell, I still see
the guy that was talking about eating kneecaps. Like once
you say something like that, you're automatically different than any
of the run of the mill coaches who you know,
compose themselves differently or whatever.

Speaker 4 (38:40):
I mean.

Speaker 3 (38:40):
Bill Belichick's in a league of his own because he
famously just did not say much at all because he
didn't want to be there. But Dan Campbell in the
way he presents himself, like even Demiico has more coach
speaking him than Dan Campbell does, I think. And Demiko's
very very young to the job, if I'm not mistake.
In the very first game in the both of their

(39:00):
careers at that position head coach of the Lions DC
of the Niners was against each other twenty twenty one,
opening game of the season, Lions and Niners forty one
to thirty three advantaged to Miko. Well, Dan got his
revenge last year. That might be the one loss that
makes me the most irritated. It wasn't a playoff game

(39:23):
because you know, like what happened on Christmas Day was different.
The Jets game on Halloween sucked. But I don't know
there's injuries.

Speaker 5 (39:30):
They're not that many games where I really think the
Texans found a way to lose. You had five interceptions,
you found a way to lose.

Speaker 4 (39:36):
Yeah, that's why.

Speaker 2 (39:38):
The A team on Sports Talk seven.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
Ninety two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking your Team,
Adam Clinton and Adam Weckler are the A team.

Speaker 3 (40:00):
It is the A team Sports Talk seven to ninety
Space City Home Network. The simulcast has begun just in
time for all of you to see. If it appears
I have tears in my eyes, it's because I do,
because Wex was making me laugh that hard during the break.
I wish I could tell you what he said. No,
it's true, Caul, I swear, it's just I couldn't even
I almost I almost lost it right then and there.

Speaker 4 (40:22):
He was like, get a hold of yourself.

Speaker 5 (40:24):
As expected, the Corpus Christy Hooks lineup will feature yord
On Alvarez batting second designated hitter again this evening. Another
evening game for the Hooks. If all goes according to plan,
he will do the same thing tomorrow. If all goes
according to plan, they will make a decision on whether
or not to have him join the team in Baltimore,

(40:46):
potentially for Saturday or Sunday's game. The team is off
on Monday and then begins a ten game homestand Tuesday,
Dyke and Park against the Colorado Rockies. As long as
everything goes well, I feel comfortable, as day Brown did
yesterday say, well, he's going to be in the line
of Tuesday pretty much under every single scenario, provided there
are no setbacks, And honestly, if there's a setback now,

(41:09):
then you might be able to unfortunately, close the book
on his season. With thirty some odd games left to go,
Astros are in Baltimore in advance of maybe meeting up
with Jordan Alvarez Jason Alexander.

Speaker 4 (41:21):
It's the ball tonight for the Houston Astros.

Speaker 6 (41:23):
Now.

Speaker 5 (41:23):
Hunter Brown has turned things back in the right direction
big time here in the month of August, carrying a
one forty four ra through his work on the mound
in August. In other words, almost as good as Jason Alexander,
but not quite Jason Alexander trails one American League starter
in August in ERA one. He's second in ERA in

(41:47):
the American League at the major league level in twenty
twenty five in the month of August. After his three starts,
where he's only allowed two runs in those eighteen innings
of work, He's got obviously an ERA of one, and
the Astros win when he pitches. I don't know how
many runs they'll score tonight when he pitches, but so
far this month they have scored enough runs to win

(42:09):
when he pitches. They are facing somebody who is one
hundred percent guaranteed to perform less effectively against the Astros
than he did the first time he faced them about
a week ago, when the first twenty three Astros were
retired in order to start the game, and he took
a perfect game into that eighth inning before it was
broken up. It was not a very fun series for

(42:30):
the Astros. I talked about the Orioles before that series.
It's now a week later and at least want to
mention it again and have the at least a little
bit of information to back it up. The Orioles are
a fifth place team the entire season, counts. It's a
full season. Every game counts. Wins and losses matter at
the beginning of the season, just like they do at
the end of the season to your overall record. Different

(42:53):
pockets of the season teams are very, very different. If
the worst team in the league was about to play
the Astros, they would be saying, this is awesome, and
someone would say, why they're in first place, They're sixty
nine and fifty eight. Why do you want to play them.
I don't want to play them, but I want to
play them now because who are they right now? Though

(43:13):
they're not very good, The Astros are not a very
good baseball team. The Orioles were that at the beginning
of the year when they won only fifteen of their
first forty three games. So they fired their manager and
it was definitely a wake up call to a very
talented group of players. They've also gotten a little bit
healthier under their interim manager. Math tells me half a

(43:33):
season is eighty one games. Last eighty one games. There
are only four American League teams that have won more
than the Orioles. The Oriols are not a bad baseball team.
One of those four teams is Houston they've won one
more game than Baltimore Baltimore Trails, those four teams and
those eighty one games, and they're ten and six against

(43:55):
those four teams. This is not a cakewalk. It was
in a kakewalk a week ago. Shouldn't have been a
wake up call to the fact that even though there
are many many games double figure games at the time
under five hundred, these aren't. This is a good baseball team,
and the Astros aren't. They have to change that. They
have to start doing the things that.

Speaker 4 (44:15):
Got them miss point have passed them.

Speaker 5 (44:17):
That's the other part of this. If the Mariners ever
passed the Astros in the division, well the door is
now open for the teams in the wild card race.
And you need three other teams because the Mariners are
one of them. So you need three other teams to
pass you, the Yankees, the Red Sox, and an American
League Central team currently that's the Royals. If all three

(44:38):
of those teams and the Royals are not very far
behind you anymore, and they're playing well, and they're playing
well A nice, nice game last night losing to the Rangers,
though that helped a little bit. Yes, you got a
realizing to the Rangers helps the Astros.

Speaker 3 (44:51):
It's not just the Mariners that have been tail spinning
that have kept the Astros in place. The Red Sox
have lost three in a row. Mariners have obviously lost
in a row, even the Royals loss. It's taken the
Astros losing four straight and the Yankees winning five straight
in order for the Yankees to be ahead of the
Astros by a half game.

Speaker 5 (45:11):
Yep, the Yankees now sit in that top spot in
the wildcard race Boston Seattle. Obviously, if Houston were there,
they're not, thankfully, with a game and a half lead,
their lineup tonight against Young who nearly got into the
ninth inning with a perfect game, will look like this. Peynya, Correa, Altuve,
and Walker and that's your infield, all four of them.
They're batting in the top four spots. Obviously, that means

(45:32):
Jose Al Twove is playing second base. Long slumping Jesus
Sanchez is your right fielder tonight. He bats behind Christian Walker,
Yander Diez, the designated hitter Jason Alexander will be throwing
to Victor Karattini.

Speaker 4 (45:45):
He bats seventh.

Speaker 5 (45:46):
He of the Yeah, the Astros broke their scoreless streak
thanks to the home run from Mauricio Dubon is in
left He bats eighth and slumping as hard as anybody
in the lineup.

Speaker 4 (45:57):
Is Jacob Melton, yes, in center field.

Speaker 3 (46:00):
I want to read you something somebody sent me the
other day and see what you think about this, because
as it pertains to what you just mentioned that Victor
Carrottini is gonna be catching tonight, and just just gonna
read it anonymously obviously, and see what you think. Caratini
needs to be the everyday guy. In my opinion, you're

(46:20):
not gonna get much if you shop Diez, but you
need the way the team control versus how bad he
is behind the plate. Do you agree so far?

Speaker 5 (46:29):
Uh, there's always one thing I'll have to keep saying,
but I'll let you finish first, well.

Speaker 4 (46:34):
He said.

Speaker 3 (46:35):
Yiner continues to prove to be another victim of the
one knee catching epidemic that is rampant across baseball and
has creeped all the way down into the high school level.
I'm editing on the fly here, so I don't give
this person away and all that kind of stuff. But
here's the thing I've I've always felt like Jiner was

(46:56):
just waiting to bust out every single year he's been
here in the big leagues. Offensively, Yeah, like something, something
just hasn't clicked, something's been holding him back, or.

Speaker 5 (47:08):
He busted out his first year, and he has been
less successful ever since.

Speaker 3 (47:12):
Unfortunately, when he became more of the everyday catcher. Is
what this person is arguing. This person thinks there's a
correlation to that.

Speaker 5 (47:20):
So his offense is struggling because he is catching too much.

Speaker 3 (47:25):
I mean, it's not the first person to bring up
that theory about catchers. Hardly, I didn't really thought about
it that way.

Speaker 5 (47:32):
The way I've thought about it is most people think
that he shouldn't be catching because he's bad at catching.

Speaker 4 (47:39):
I think he was also saying that too.

Speaker 5 (47:40):
That's what I thought. That's where I thought you were headed.
But in my response to that is gonna have to
always be until it changes. The best pitcher on the
staff only throws to him every start. Hunter Brown has
Janer Diaz behind the plate, and I know he is
in a small group of astros pitchers, maybe a group
of one that wants Jiner behind the plate for himself
specifically and essentially has him as his personal catcher. I

(48:03):
do think there are other pitchers who don't like the
way he calls games or don't like the way he
receives pitches. He's a little bit better than Victor at
throwing runners out if the pitcher does their job, like
we just saw a couple of days ago. If the
pitcher ever did their job on a regular basis, Yanner
would be one of the better arms in the league
at cutting down you.

Speaker 4 (48:23):
Know, base deealers.

Speaker 5 (48:23):
But they can't do anything about it when the guy's
already on the base before he's even received the pitch,
if you know what I mean. But as a catcher,
like with his hitting, he's gotten nothing but worse, he
doesn't receive the ball nearly as well. I mentioned it
yesterday already after the game because we were doing the
tenth Innick Show. That first wild pitch was catch the ball.
That's not a wild pitch. I don't care where you

(48:45):
were expecting it. You got to catch that, and he didn't.
And he used to be a guy who never had
any pass balls, and now they're happening all the time,
and many times it's a wild pitch because it's on
the pitcher. But the pass balls shouldn't be there this year,
And I do think the way he receives the pitches
is a little bit troubling. And I do think there's
sometimes a disconnect between he and the pitchers that are
out there. I don't really think one has I don't

(49:07):
put the two together, though. I don't think him catching
too much is hurting his offense. And I would say
probably conversely, you want Victor Karattini catching eighty five ninety
one hundred games, what do you think that's gonna do
to his offense as an older player?

Speaker 3 (49:22):
Yeah, yeah, that's I mean the obviously obviously that argument
would be valid. Although I just when Kartini is like
pinch hitting for example, or whatever.

Speaker 6 (49:33):
I like.

Speaker 3 (49:33):
I just when he's at the play for any reason,
even if he's part of the lineup that day, to
begin with, I feel pretty good about something good is
going to happen every single time.

Speaker 4 (49:44):
I don't feel that way.

Speaker 3 (49:46):
I definitely don't feel that way about Yaina right now,
at least not as I did when he first started playing.
I mean, we all wanted him on the playoff roster
as the everyday catcher back in twenty twenty three.

Speaker 4 (49:59):
Famously, Dusty was like nay, and Dusty was right.

Speaker 5 (50:01):
If if it hadn't been said enough, Dusty was right
and he knew it, and I think the people in
the clubhouse knew it, and it was It shouldn't have been.

Speaker 4 (50:08):
It should not have come to that.

Speaker 5 (50:09):
But there was such a huge swell of support outside
the organization, on social media and in the media. You're
trying to win baseball games with the catcher, who's going
to make sure you're pitching is great?

Speaker 4 (50:22):
Is Maldi gonna hit?

Speaker 6 (50:23):
No?

Speaker 5 (50:24):
And it was still the right call. By leaps and bounds,
it was the right call. This month, every player is
in that roughly the same boat. Chas McCormick this month
is three for seventeen. He's hitting one seventy six. He's
third on the team in OPS because he hit a homer.
They are not as a team. You have three players

(50:44):
Chaz Ureas and Korea with an OPS of over seven forty.
Everybody else in the lineup, considering Eureus and McCormick, are
almost never in it. That means eight players in every
lineup that Joe puts out there all month long are
not having a good time of things this month. Yeah,
eight of your nine.

Speaker 3 (51:03):
Well, when you have thirty plus shutout innings, that's gonna
not help those trouble either.

Speaker 4 (51:07):
That's a bad thing. It is if you didn't know.

Speaker 5 (51:09):
That was a little bit of negativity unfortunately, But gave
you the lineup for tonight for the Astros and hopefully
we'll get something from them.

Speaker 3 (51:17):
I'm smelling something. I'm smelling a first inning run.

Speaker 5 (51:21):
I don't know about that, but I am smelling a
first inning run for the Astros. Mentioned a couple times
on the Texans and wanted to hear from them after
their joint practice today.

Speaker 4 (51:30):
We will do that.

Speaker 5 (51:31):
We come back to Miko Ryans on the football and
Demiico Ryans on the off the field football stuff for
the Texans.

Speaker 4 (51:38):
Coming up next.

Speaker 1 (51:40):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety. We have neglected
to mention that this hour we will be joined by
bun Bee here in studio. Very good cause good to
catch up with a local legend, by the way, So

(52:01):
we're looking forward to that. In about thirty minutes or so,
he'll be on with us on camera obviously and on
the air here on Sports Talk seven ninety. In the meantime,
not everything is rosy in Texans Land. If if you
knew about what had happened with Jimmy Ward this offseason,
not to mention he's injured, but if you knew what

(52:23):
had happened already, and then you woke up this morning
and you saw that news, what was your initial reaction
when you saw it?

Speaker 5 (52:29):
Well, I'll have to play the what if game, because
I saw the news late last night and have since
read the entire case that was filed.

Speaker 4 (52:35):
Of course, you did also saw Jimmy a practice yesterday.

Speaker 5 (52:37):
He was not practicing, but he is there and has
been at the facility and has been working out and
is still trying to get back to being ready to
play from the ankle issue that he suffered from. Now,
when I saw it, I thought to make sure I
had all the details on it and make sure everything
that was being written about it. There is a lot

(52:57):
going on. His attorney definitely feels a certain way. And
now in this case, with an additional filing, there's a
criminal case going on, and that'll be heard later this month.
This is now a civil case that was filed in
our county, the one we're currently in Harris County. Previously,
there was one filed dismissed in Montgomery County, but the
same particulars involved in the same incident involved from back

(53:19):
in April and from a June arrest. A civil case
like this, as we know from sadly, all these civil
cases we've talked about here on the show were involving
a Houston Texans football player.

Speaker 4 (53:30):
It's basically one player, over and over and over again.

Speaker 5 (53:34):
A civil case is filed on behalf of the plaintiff
in these instances, and the information written within the here's
what has happened portion of it is the plaintiff is
telling you everything that happened from their point of view,
completely and holy there's no other side of it. There's
no here's what I know that didn't happen. Here's what
actually happened. This is what I'm I'm telling you about

(53:54):
how I feel I want to present the situation, hopefully
factually to the case that I'm filing here. Also in
the fact that this is what is being asked for
in damages twenty million dollars. And who's representing this person,
this plaintiff, this female it's Tony Busby. If the pieces
of the civil case that are to be read about

(54:17):
and written about, as many of you have read some
of the articles. Yeah, it does not paint a very
good picture of Houston Texans safety. Jimmy Ward doesn't paint
a good picture at all and paints a very long
history of very bad things, all with the same woman
for many, many many years, with whom they share a
three year old child. But that is one side of
the story. That's what you get in a civil case.

(54:39):
Doesn't mean it isn't true. It just doesn't mean that
it is either. It was presented to Demiko rans today
after practice, you know, his take kind of on the
Jimmy Ward situation. And again the League has not done
anything with this, as they normally don't do at this
stage of any allegations or cases. And maybe after the
August hearing will be a little bit closer to where

(55:00):
they think things are or if there's movement on this case,
if it's deems to be a worthwhile pursuit for the
courts or not when there is an answer to it.
But Jamiko Ryan's addressing the Jimmy Ward situation earlier today
from Detroit and.

Speaker 8 (55:16):
With Jimmy, I know there are a lot of allegations
and things with Jimmy. We don't know the true story
of all those and I hate to jump to rush
judgment on any situation. Right with Jimmy, we will let
the situation play itself out, let whatever has to happen
in the court system.

Speaker 6 (55:33):
Let that play out.

Speaker 4 (55:33):
But I think it's.

Speaker 8 (55:34):
Unfair to rush the judgment when allegations and stories come
out on players, everybody's quick to jump on it and
jump on the negative side with the players. Let's just
allow it to play out and we'll see what happens
when everything is over.

Speaker 3 (55:49):
That's what he has to say, because I don't know
what else he's supposed to say in this situation.

Speaker 5 (55:53):
Maybe partially true. Maybe there is a conversation that's been had.
Since this is not a new INCID, this is months old,
so presumably you've spoken with Jimmy Ward. That's what I
wanted to multiple occasions about what actually took place. And again,
it would only be his work. And I don't know
the how the coach or the team or Nick or

(56:15):
anybody would feel about how how he's presented it to him.
If he says this is actually what happened, or that
is completely made up, or I've done some things wrong.
However was presented to him reading through the case and
how he has described just as a person, you know,
reading through the description of the series of events, it
obviously would it's very damaging to who he is, and

(56:38):
I think how he would potentially no longer be employed
by the Houston Texans.

Speaker 3 (56:42):
But as he said, they're going to let it play out. Yeah,
it was very specific the allegations. But as far as
to me, like this is what always fascinates me about
really any sport, but especially the NFL, because I just
think that I hate to say this, but I without
how numbers in front of me, I'm pretty sure I'm
correct in this. Just from the sheer volume of players

(57:06):
in the NFL, I feel like these kinds of cases
happen more often involving NFL players than they do other
athletes in other leagues. But don't quote me on that
because I'm not sure about that.

Speaker 5 (57:18):
I mean, you might just take the math of it.
They're able to carry ninety players for months on end, yeah,
and then they're able to carry sixty nine players through
the season, plus all the players on injured reserve. The
NBA team carries fifteen to eighteen to twenty volume of
thirty of the players involved in this league.

Speaker 3 (57:38):
But what are the conversations that you kind of pointed to, Like,
in other words, this is honestly where and you know
Nick Cassario would come into play here. This is where
higher ups in any NFL organization, in my opinion, actually

(57:59):
earn their money just as much as any x's and o's,
any personel because when this kind of thing happens, all
it takes is one misstep all it takes. And that's
why I said he had to say that in that
press conference. All it takes is one slip or something
coming out not the right way that Demiko says. And
you've got a firestorm on your hands from a media

(58:20):
standpoint and all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 5 (58:22):
You got to be sensitive to both parties. Yeah, and
you just want to probably have very little to say
about it then he did. I mean, obviously no particulars
of it. Very similar from just the charges that are
found or the codes that were alleged to be violated
in the civil case here and many others we've talked
about on the show involving a different Texan assault sexual

(58:45):
assault in decent assault in decent exposure.

Speaker 4 (58:48):
These are the penal.

Speaker 3 (58:49):
Codes and texas that are involved in this case five
counts of negligence, gross negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, assault,
sexual these just so people are aware, this is what's
involved in this particular civil case filey. And again, not
that there's ever a good time for something like this

(59:11):
to happen, Farb, That's not what I'm saying.

Speaker 5 (59:13):
None of the three hundred and sixty five, none of
them are good. None of them are good.

Speaker 3 (59:16):
But if you're thirty four, you are so close to
the end in NFL years, it's like dog years, and
you're injured. I just sometimes, and I know this is
a very easy thing for somebody in my chair to say,
I don't know what these people are thinking. I don't
know what you're thinking. You are hanging on by a

(59:37):
very thin thread. To take a quote from rod Tidwell,
you're at the end and you're already hurt. Just don't
know if I do anything to jeopardize that, and especially
something like this.

Speaker 5 (59:49):
Yeah, I mean I kind of think of all that
stuff as unrelated. Well, it's secondary to I wear a
closet hand of the library, I work at a bookstore.

Speaker 4 (59:57):
Probably shouldn't do those things either, And I don't they'll
think she was just be involved in these things either.

Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
But again, this is what we always bring up, like
you you don't play in the NFL because you are
not one of the half percent of the population that
can do you know, Like that's what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (01:00:10):
It's a very very exclusive club.

Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
I don't know, you can go down the list of
guys that have done just stupid to just downright terrible things.

Speaker 4 (01:00:20):
Like what are you thinking?

Speaker 5 (01:00:22):
And yeah, obviously that's actually part of the case itself,
that the thinking was impaired at.

Speaker 4 (01:00:29):
The time, right by crystal meth.

Speaker 5 (01:00:31):
But yeah, even that, that's the kind of part of
it where just in explaining what this civil case is about,
any case like this, just the person the planet said
it appeared that he might have been acting like someone
who was under the influence of crystal meth.

Speaker 4 (01:00:47):
Let's you can say.

Speaker 5 (01:00:49):
Whatever you want out there, say whatever you want, file
a case over it and see where it goes. Now,
again I'm not saying that's not what happened, but there's
that's not what happened. They're also in a civil case.
It's not like beyond a reasonable doubt. It's not like
a criminal k there are different levels of seeking a win,
if you will. But yeah, it doesn't paint a very

(01:01:10):
good picture, even if the actual particulars are untrue. Obviously,
an incident took place, and that in and of itself,
obviously is something you would not want to happen for
either of these two people or any of the children
that were involved. Jimmy Ward is on the Texans pup list,
and within the next week's time, between the twenty sixth
and twenty seventh of August, when the rosters begin to

(01:01:33):
get manipulated into the fifty three, a decision of some sort,
just from a roster standpoint, will have to be made,
and most likely he'll go from the active pupp list,
which is what all five of the players on the
pup list right now are, including Tank Dell and Trent Brown.
They will move to the reserve pup list, and that
will be a very simple move to be made and
won't impact the fifty three.

Speaker 3 (01:01:53):
I'm predicting he's not on the roster, and then I'm
predicting that that's going to be an even worse day
since his grand jury is August thirty first, a few
days later.

Speaker 4 (01:02:01):
Thank its gonna be very very bad month. For Jimmy Ward.

Speaker 3 (01:02:05):
That's just my prediction, just based on what I've read
and all that kind of stuff. But yeah, good on
Demiko for handling it the way he did because not
a fun part of his job, obviously. So we'll keep
an eye on that, obviously and keep you up to
date on that. There is a new space Cowboy we
need to tell you about, and we'll do.

Speaker 1 (01:02:23):
That next the ag on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (01:02:34):
Heya continues here halfway through our two of the program.
We'll get you into the Astros on deck show a
little bit after five o'clock tonight, both the Astros and
the Orioles making a host of roster moves in advance
of tonight's game. Orioles catcher Adlee Rutchman he is headed
to the il an oblique strain, though they've termed it mild,
but obviously unavailable for the next ten days at the

(01:02:57):
bare minimum. Sam Bascello, the youngster who the Astros just saw,
he's now there everyday. Catcher Daniel Johnson also activated for
the Orioles in four moves made by your Houston Astros
as they get prepared for the series tonight. Unfortunately, but expected,
Taylor Tremmell is gonna be out of action for a

(01:03:17):
bit ten day il for him, and as Joe Spotta
talked about that, his back and his neck were what
they were most concerned about. It's a cervical muscle strain,
the term for the injury to Tremmel. Bryce Matthews is
back with the Astros. He was recalled to take that
spot last night. The Astros also outrighted Jordan Weems to

(01:03:37):
Triple A since he expectedly cleared waivers, so he's now
part of the Space Cowboys, and a couple of days ago,
the Astros returned JP France from his rehab assignment. The
time period had passed for him to be on a
rehabit s Diamont, so he was reinstated from the sixty day
injured list and optioned to Triple A.

Speaker 4 (01:03:58):
So he is now.

Speaker 5 (01:04:00):
Member of the Astros forty man roster who pitches his
games and does his work for the Triple A team
at present time. Could be recalled at any time and
would have options to be sent back down at any time,
but that is where he will continue doing his work.
And as I mentioned last segment, the Hooks back in
action tonight. Jordan Alvarez hopefully the first of two games

(01:04:22):
he'll play today and tomorrow, back to back, and that
will be that with his rehab assignment. I'm glad the
hook's got to see him for a couple more games.
But every time players go down for rehab assignments, I
always hope it's the last time they're ever there.

Speaker 3 (01:04:34):
You want another modern reference as it pertains to this
whole situation, Uh yeah, sure.

Speaker 4 (01:04:39):
What would Al Gore say about all this? I don't
know how to attach a lock box to this, but what.

Speaker 3 (01:04:45):
Sheer amount of people that are injured who pitch for
the Astros is staggering.

Speaker 5 (01:04:51):
So is there not a little Clinton in the Gore impression? No,
there is if you listen to it. How there shouldn't be,
But I understand why there is. Let's hear Bill, I
cannot pitch right now, and then let's hear al staggering.

(01:05:12):
There you go, there's a little bit there, lock box.

Speaker 3 (01:05:15):
He would have been the most boring president ever, Let's
face it, but he did invent the internet just asking.

Speaker 4 (01:05:19):
I know we all appreciate that.

Speaker 3 (01:05:21):
Look at where we are now, gosh, but even it's
not just the amount of pictures. Let's just take the
pictures because there's Lord knows, there's enough position players. The
sheer amount of long term pitching injuries. JP France has
been on the show for another two years, has he not?

Speaker 5 (01:05:39):
He has, but basically but what I was saying about
him earlier, and the same thing for Luis Garcia and
the Astros now are confirming. They absolutely agreed with me.
And I wondered how they were going to go about it,
and this is the answer. JP France and Luis Garcia
for their last several rehab outings were healthy, hundred percent healthy,

(01:06:01):
no problems, no worry about how they feel the next day,
no worry about where their pitch count is. They're healthy pitchers,
ready to pitch. But the Astros don't feel comfortable putting
them on the Astros. They don't have a place for them.
They don't necessarily want them as a long guy. They
don't want them starting games. But they're healthy. Well, so
this is the roster mechanism you go through. You activate

(01:06:23):
them off the sixty day IL. That means they're now
part of the forty man roster and now they're go
to TRIBAA and I don't know that that will be
the same path for Luis Garcia. But that is the
answer to the They seemingly are running out of healthy
arms all the time. I mean, Logan van wi is
on the Astros. In their last series, Taylor Scott was
pitching for the Astros, Jordan Wims was pitching for the Astros,

(01:06:45):
and JP Frantz is not pitching for the Astros currently. Again,
he's not the same pitcher as those Those pitchers are
used to pitching, you know, once out of every three
or four days, twice every five days. They're relievers, they've
been Their arm is in tune to be a reliever,
and his isn't. So I'm not comparing apples to apples,
but I think there's something to why he's not on
the Astros.

Speaker 3 (01:07:05):
And again clearly, I mean you talked about Jason Alexander
a couple of segments ago and how he's been by
far the best from an era standpoint.

Speaker 5 (01:07:15):
He's got a one era, Hunter's got one point four
to four. Hunter's so good this month talking about just
this month, Yeah, just just here in the month of August.

Speaker 3 (01:07:22):
But after yesterday, after yesterday, see what before that, he
was he was pretty high up there.

Speaker 4 (01:07:30):
Not a good month but here's the deal, Like I've
lost my train of thought. I hate it when that happens.
That was my fault.

Speaker 5 (01:07:36):
I only interrupted you three times. Jason Alexander is really
really really here we go.

Speaker 4 (01:07:40):
Here we go. I'm back.

Speaker 3 (01:07:42):
I I don't feel good about it first of all,
say that, but then like, how how much pressure Let's
just put it this way, how much pressure does Lance
mccullors feel, let alone, how much pressure is the organization
feeling just in anticipation of Friday start? Because this is tomorrow,
by the way, he's back, blister, all that stuff. But

(01:08:05):
it has not gone well and not just like a
little bad like Fromber every time feels like, I know
it's not been quite that bad, but Fromber's first inning
yesterday is what it feels like you're anticipating almost every
time Lance mccullor starts, because it just has not gone well.

Speaker 5 (01:08:20):
Yeah, four of his last five starts before the blister
sidelined him, he gave up four earned runs or more.
And that's not any way for a team in first
place to stay in first place. I don't really even
for Jordan. This team is struggling right now. So it
seems like, well now there's even more pressure on them.
They just need to go out. What are you capable
of doing? Lance is capable of giving this team five

(01:08:40):
or six innings and keeping them in the game. He
did do that many times this season. Six innings, no runs,
six innings, three runs, six innings, one run. It has
happened that, not necessarily, every single time they hand them
the ball, and I don't know that this is long term.
They're currently in a six man rotation. As soon as
Lance is activated, and a roster move will have to
be made for tomorrow's game in order for that to happen.

(01:09:02):
But Hunter Brown and Frober Valzez close out the series
against the Tigers. Four different starting pitchers. We'll throw over
the next four consecutive days. There is an off day,
which means if they maintain a six man rotation, then
all those pitchers are getting a full week's worth of rest,
six days of rest in between starts, and it changes

(01:09:23):
the makeup of a bullpen that's already gassed and overworked.
And you're taking an arm out of the bullpen if
you have six starters. So I have to imagine this
is probably just for this trip through the rotation, which
does include Arrogatyon the Javier. They get the ball on
Saturday and Sunday to close out this four game series.

Speaker 4 (01:09:43):
I mean, at this rate, they'll have an eight man rotation.

Speaker 5 (01:09:45):
Well, you can't because when the starter's done after four
innings or five innings, you got twelve to fifteen more
outs to go. Well, who do you turn to your
five man bullpen? You just have to carry more pitchers
that are available to you on an everyday basis versus
carrying like carrying six starters is difficult. We gotten used

(01:10:07):
to it a little bit with the Astros because they've
done it so frequently over the last couple of years.
Even for extended periods of time. It works when they're good.
It works when they go six and seven innings with regularity.
If three of the six give you six, well then
you can do it.

Speaker 13 (01:10:22):
Well.

Speaker 5 (01:10:22):
If they don't, your hose, you don't have any arms
available to you. I am hopeful for one thing when
the Astros hop back on Space City Home Network tomorrow
and they're going to the pen and they put up
the graphic of all their bullpen arms, how many pitches
they threw, basically the chart of each day of the week,
and how many pitches they threw and giving you an

(01:10:43):
idea of their availability. I'm hopeful in one way positive Well,
I'm also hopeful one way in the Dad Joe kind
of way. Just go ahead and put Chas McCormick on
the graphic, please and show me how many pitches he's
thrown over the last five per days available.

Speaker 4 (01:10:57):
I don't need that in my life. Did they put
him on the one the last time? I have not?
They should have? They have not? All right, when we
come back, bun B in studio, looking forward to that.

Speaker 2 (01:11:07):
Next the age on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (01:11:19):
Eight team it's Sports Talk seven ninety x Ac and
bun B.

Speaker 4 (01:11:25):
It just rolls off the tongue.

Speaker 3 (01:11:26):
Yeah, it sounds like a new group. Do you want
to be in a music group with us? Do you
think we'd sell a lot of records some music? I
don't want to be in a band. I don't think
it would be our day jib right.

Speaker 5 (01:11:36):
I think his options of who to do a collab
with or any kind of musical anything with, he's got
better options than the two of us, and we've seen
many of them and heard many of them before.

Speaker 4 (01:11:46):
He's also sold way more records than us.

Speaker 6 (01:11:49):
Well, I mean I started a little earlier though, I think, right,
but I've never sold any exactly. You still haven't started. Yes,
that's unfair advantage, man.

Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
It's true. But you're very good at what you do.
And one of the things that you do has nothing
to do with music. It's trill burger's that's that's true,
I guess. And yeah in execution, yeah, you don't. I
don't have to wrap to get a burger.

Speaker 6 (01:12:08):
No, done, No, but uh and but again, this is
it's a passion thing, right, Like having this burger and
being involved with this business is probably the most passionate
I've been about anything. Uh, only two things ever before
that was probably falling in love with hip hop and
falling in love with the wife.

Speaker 3 (01:12:25):
How she's doing good, missus Bunn, as Matt Thomas calls her.

Speaker 6 (01:12:29):
Yeah, my better half's always better than me. I don't,
I don't. I don't know why she doesn't refer to
me as a lesser half. But that's her good grace.
But she's doing good. She's doing good. She's excited about
football too, Like she's a really big football fan.

Speaker 3 (01:12:43):
This guy is like salivating, Yeah, just kind of knock
him down one by one.

Speaker 5 (01:12:46):
You bring up football first. This is a Demico and
Will and CJ. This is year three. They've gotten stuff accomplished,
and you're one and year two but have done the
same thing both years. You're impression of what's happening in
twenty twenty five, what's gonna be.

Speaker 6 (01:13:00):
I like the changes that they're making. I like, you know,
we LOSTO the guy already for injuries, but I like
the changes that they're making. And I think I think
they're still very young, right, the core of this very young,
from coaching to the players are still you know, predominantly
young guys. And I think that the first two years
where learning curve years. First year you get away with

(01:13:22):
a lot because there's no film on TJ right. Second
year you start to react to how guys are reacting
to you. And I think we've got an idea of
what we're up against. We've got a we've got a
decent schedule. I like the schedule. I've seen worse for teams.
But I think we as a city, as a team,
and as a fan base are in a prime position
to be a dominant team this season. I think we're

(01:13:45):
playout bound for sure, barring any severe injuries. But I
just like the way we're positioned as a team. I
would I would like to see Joe back sooner than later.
Obviously from a running standpoint, but I'm good with Nick Chubb.
Like if that's if that's a guy that's got to
go in and play two or three downs, I'm good
with Chub. I'm good with that. I think I think

(01:14:06):
he's I think he's exactly who we would need in
that position. I love him as a tandem, I love
him as a committee, as a running back committee, and
hopefully when Joe comes back a little healthier that they
can take full advantage of it. We got fresh legs
available in the backfield at any given time. I think
it's I think it's really about getting it. For me,
it's always about the tight end position. That's that's always

(01:14:28):
been my X factor for this team. It's really about
the tight end position.

Speaker 4 (01:14:32):
That's tough.

Speaker 5 (01:14:32):
With what happened with Brevin obviously, Adult Schultz, Kate Stover back.
You're talking about this team being young, Obviously Kate and
Brevin were on that side. Two other guys did not mention,
Kamari Lasser, Kaylyn Bullock. I assume those are two of
your favorites, and they come through Trlberger's before, had a
good time there.

Speaker 6 (01:14:49):
No, those guys look I like them as people too,
which helps. But again they're they're coming to play, They're
ready to play, and this team believes the next guy up.
You know what I'm saying. I like Book personally as
a player. I like him as a person. So I
don't I don't go into this season like well or
I don't know. I feel very positive. I'm excited about

(01:15:09):
the potential for this team this season, going into the future.

Speaker 5 (01:15:11):
As I said, but we're gonna take it one by one.
We're gonna say the Rockets for last in line, the
little church. So number two is your Houston Astros. Yes,
as we've been saying for unfortunately a little bit too
long here over the last about month and change. They
are going through it right now.

Speaker 6 (01:15:25):
Yes, but again that's the injuries. There's only so much
you could do about that. Personally, I like to see
Nick de Turrell more upset about baseball than I am.
So anytime I feel bad about my team, I just
go on his Instagram page and it always always makes
me feel a little better. But I would say in
the last week or two of baseball, they're probably playing
a little better than we are. They're starting to figure

(01:15:46):
it out. I'm always concerned with our team about pitching depth.
That's always a concern going into the playoffs as well.
Coach is gonna get better, They're gonna lock in on
certain guys, They're gonna understand a lot of these guys
a lot better initially. And it's always for me about
that pitching depth. That's always going to be a concern
for us, especially going in with injuries. Like we could
find a game, you know, we don't if some of

(01:16:08):
these guys don't come back zoom. We can find ourselves
in a position where we've got five or six guys
ready to go, and if we run up against the
wrong bats at the wrong time, we could run through
those guys very, very quickly. It only takes one guy
in the first two innings to let a couple go,
let a couple get away from him, and then you're
you're fighting inning by inning just to stay in the game.

Speaker 3 (01:16:28):
All right, Now, let's get to the real team we
want to talk about. Oh yeah, have you talked to
Katie yet?

Speaker 6 (01:16:34):
I have not talked to him. Personally. I've been We've
talked through like texts and dms and stuff, but I
haven't gotten the phone with him. He spends a lot
of time training.

Speaker 4 (01:16:42):
And his off season's wild busy.

Speaker 6 (01:16:44):
He's super he's super focused on getting as much training
done as he can because the offseason is win. They
want the commercials. They need to sit down and go
over the design so the next season his shoes and
which kind of roll ups are they going to do
whereas they're going to you know, and now the whole
thing is looking at the schedule and trying to figure
out where they are at certain days and trying to
figure out different things because they always, you know, there's

(01:17:06):
always a bit of effort put into the breast cancer
shoe and different things like that. So some of these
things that he does with Nike with these releases, because
they're probably going to release anywhere from eight to twelve
shoes throughout the season, some of them more than others,
he likes to put a little bit more hands get
hands on. The breast cancer shoe is a big deal
to him because it's and as far as Aunt Pearl

(01:17:26):
who passed away from breast cancer. So he always likes
to be a little bit more active and that. So
I haven't really talked to him, and I don't I
don't really care to bother him right now. I want
him to be locked in full. He doesn't need to
be answering text from Bumbee right now. He needs to
be locking in and making sure he's getting acquainted with
the guys, get some practice time in with the guys
as well, and be ready to start the season in
October strong.

Speaker 3 (01:17:47):
But the text messages you have exchanged, is he anywhere
near as excited about being in Houston as Houston is
about having him?

Speaker 6 (01:17:54):
I think so. I think I think Kevin is a
guy that sees the potential for this organization. But to
be fair, it's also aware that Houston's lifestyle is nice,
Houston's shopping is nice, the quality of life here is
really good, and that people are going to accept him
very easily. It's not like having to play in New York,
having to play in La on those kind of markets.

(01:18:14):
It's a little bit easier to navigate through Houston. Big thing.
He's excited about his food, not just my food, but
food in general. He knows there's a lot of good
food here. He knows there's beautiful women in Houston. He's
still a single guy, I believe, so he's going to
have a great time here in Houston. He's just got
to find that right balance right of how much outside
to participate in. But he's a smart guy. He doesn't

(01:18:34):
put himself in potentially bad positions. There's pretty smart about
that stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:18:39):
And he's a generous guy because you guys have collaborated
on a fantastic cost.

Speaker 6 (01:18:43):
Absolutely. So the first thing that we talked about when
I got in with Rich and he and we were
talking about, you know, exactly what did we want the
first thing to be. And I was like, well, it's
got to be community based. I said, I think that
works for you for your model and for our model,
is to make sure that we give love to the community.
And they were aware, like everyone else was, unfortunately, of

(01:19:04):
all the damage going on in a hill country with
the flooding, and so with him coming from ut and
having you know, spent time in the hill country as
a young man and knowing that community, and he just
wanted to make sure if there was a possibility, even
though we're not in that area, could we do something
that benefits that area, which we had already done once
at a Trailburger. But you know, we know here in Houston,

(01:19:26):
like during Harvey and watching everything that happened with Harvey. Yeah, initially,
while everything was on TV every day, every hour, we
got all kinds of outpour and support and resources from people.
But then after about two or three weeks and a
new story start to cycle out and people don't see
it every day, people start to think, well, maybe they're
doing okay. We know here in Houston that was far
from the case. It took years for some of these

(01:19:46):
people to really get back on their feet. Some people
are still trying to get back. They lost so much
they're still trying to recover proper footing. And so we
know that those people in Hill Country are they're still suffering.
They still need help, even if you don't see it
on TV every day. To take a while for those
people to rebuild their communities. So and he wanted to
make sure that he could be a part of something
they gave back. So we were like, well, let's do

(01:20:07):
the burger and we'll give proceeds to that. But we
can also do merchandise. And so with merchandise, we typically
sell everything in the store, but We realized that Kevin
Durant fans are all over the world, so we wanted
to make the shirt is available to as many people
as possible, one to kind of spread the message of
KD being here and being in Houston, but then also
to kind of raise as much we could in proceeds,

(01:20:29):
to donate as much as we could to help people.
And thank God that he's a you know, he's a
carrying guy. He's a giving person, you know what I'm saying.
And he's hitting the ground properly.

Speaker 12 (01:20:37):
Now.

Speaker 6 (01:20:37):
We did money green because easy Money Sniper is the nickname,
and we're getting around the rockets.

Speaker 4 (01:20:42):
Right handles ever, right, Oh, no, it's it's genius.

Speaker 6 (01:20:45):
It's genius because that's what we want. We want a
sniper who gets easy money in terms of buckets, right shoey.

Speaker 7 (01:20:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:20:53):
And he knows his role, right, he knows that he's
coming here, and he's a guy that when we need
a bucket, he's going to provide it. He just wants
to make sure he's healthy. That's the main thing, more
than anything, is being healthy, you know what I'm saying.
So we just want to get the best version of
KD that we can and he wants to give us
the best version that he can, and so as we
made the best burger that we could.

Speaker 5 (01:21:13):
Also a simple man, as you said, yes, simple burger.

Speaker 6 (01:21:16):
He's a worker, right, He comes, he does his job,
he leaves. You don't see him on the red carpets
a lot, you know what I'm saying. You don't see
that a lot of crazy situations. He's a very private guy.
He's a very chill guy. He doesn't take a lot
for Kevin Durant to be happy, you know what I'm saying.
Just friends and fun and good times. He's very, very
easy going, easy money sniper.

Speaker 4 (01:21:35):
He wants to win.

Speaker 6 (01:21:37):
He wants to win here. He believes that this team
has more than enough to get back to the playoffs.
But with him, he could be the perfect compliment that
could take this team all the way.

Speaker 3 (01:21:47):
I think I may was as much of a draw
for him wanting to come here as anything else has
been into a tril Burger yet.

Speaker 6 (01:21:55):
That I don't know. I haven't gotten the call that
he's been in.

Speaker 4 (01:21:58):
We need to make that happen.

Speaker 6 (01:21:59):
I would love for him to come.

Speaker 4 (01:22:00):
He's gonna smile, and you don't see that often with
him as.

Speaker 6 (01:22:03):
Long as he gives me a thumbs up, I'll take it.
I don't know about all thirty two from e May,
but I do like the fact that they had a
private previous relationship with the Nets and they're around the
same age, right, they're contemporaries, and they get it like
he's a dog. He May is a dog, like, not
just a coach of dogs. He barks loud himself, so

(01:22:24):
Kevin knows when he's being brought here what's expected. We
played hard nosed basketball over here. You know what I'm saying.
Kevin plays hard. You know he's going to give us everything.
He May is going to make sure he's got exactly
what he needs around him on that court. We've got
a great roster center wise, is crazy, right. I feel
like other guys are looking at theirselves like we didn't
get one and they got three? What are we doing
over here? But I think this team is primed to

(01:22:46):
go deep in the playoffs this year. I think we
can go deep in the playoffs this year. We got
somebody that we know can get us those buckets in
the clutch and can keep the game consistently. If we're ahead,
keep us ahead, and if we're behind gradual get us
back into the game.

Speaker 5 (01:23:02):
Either store location, they can still come in and get
the easy money burger. Also, the shirts you were mentioning
via trillstore dot comence orders.

Speaker 6 (01:23:08):
Yeah, the burgers are still available until tomorrow. Tomorrow's the
last day. We wanted to give it a good solid
seven days to try to raise as much money as
we could for Kirk County Relief Fund, which is where
the money's going, and just to give people an opportunity.
We want people to be pumped up and excited, not
just about the burger, not just about helping people, but
excited about this upcoming season of Rockets basketball. Man, Like

(01:23:29):
I'm pumped and usually for me it's football, football, football,
because I'm in like I think this year I'm in
six fantasy.

Speaker 4 (01:23:35):
Football leagues, right, but it's all yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:23:38):
But that being said, man, I might be more excited
about this upcoming Rockets season than anything else that's happening,
just because of the possible potential of this team going
from getting to the playoffs second in their division to
like walking into the playoffs right number one seed, home
advantage all the way through. That's what I really would love.

(01:24:00):
Kevin Durant at the very least to do. Get us,
you know, get us a higher regular season record, bring
us into the playoffs top seed in the West and
at home court advantage, and it's just, you know, just
play hardball, Just play hardball for us.

Speaker 3 (01:24:12):
As always, it's good to be in Houston and for
everybody that you just mentioned, and as always is good
to be bun beat. By the way international player's anthem.
Where's that in the pantheon of all time Houston rap
songs and just all time great rap songs?

Speaker 4 (01:24:25):
And you're biased, obviously, come on, I'd.

Speaker 6 (01:24:27):
Say top ten.

Speaker 4 (01:24:28):
It's awesome.

Speaker 6 (01:24:29):
I'd say top ten because it's it's a different type
of record. I mean, it's produced by three six Mafia,
it's featuring UGK and Outcast. That's like the seven trifecta
right there. And no disrespect to A Ball and MJG.
But there's so many, so much culture in between those
three groups involved in this song. It's it's a song
that lives on through weddings and receptions. You have no

(01:24:52):
idea how many the.

Speaker 3 (01:24:54):
Good Morning video after the Astros won the World Series.
I did not consult you for copyright, so I hope
you don't sue me.

Speaker 7 (01:25:01):
I see it.

Speaker 6 (01:25:02):
I'm gonna I'm gonna act like it didn't happen.

Speaker 4 (01:25:04):
I like that.

Speaker 6 (01:25:05):
I'm gonna act like that. You get everybody gets one
that's free pass, so that's yours, Adam, Adam, you get one,
that's it. I'd save it and use your use it properly.
You get one song, one opportunity.

Speaker 4 (01:25:18):
One, Okay to hang on to it for a while.
I'll keep that one. I used it on a championship, so.

Speaker 6 (01:25:22):
I mean, look, that's a great celebration song.

Speaker 4 (01:25:25):
By the way. Great job narrating the commemorative video for
the series, and that was awesome.

Speaker 6 (01:25:31):
That was huge because I got to see I think
it was a ludicrous that did it the year before
for the Braves. Yeah, that sucked and which which sucked
to watch. But I was like, that's pretty cool that
they went to him to narrate. I was like, I
kind of would love to do that. And then that's awesome.
I got the call and they're like, hey, Sports Illustrate.
I was like, you got me at Illustrated whatever.

Speaker 7 (01:25:52):
Whatever.

Speaker 6 (01:25:52):
They was like, no, they want you to narrate. I
was like, hell freaking yes, yes I had to. I
had that's a big thing. That's a big thing one
because it's a very rare thing when your home team
wins a championship in any sports, on any level. Look
at Dallas, Look at those guys are they'll.

Speaker 4 (01:26:10):
Tell you love you for doing that.

Speaker 6 (01:26:13):
I try to sneak it in because there's a lot
of Dallas fans. I know that, listen, and I don't
get to talk to him much at all. So that
was that was special. That was for They don't get
much specials.

Speaker 3 (01:26:21):
Than we appreciate you taking the time. We appreciate you
coming in and the cause. Obviously good luck. It's obviously
you're an institution. So anytime we can get some of
your time, we appreciate.

Speaker 10 (01:26:30):
No.

Speaker 6 (01:26:31):
Man, Look, anytime you guys need me, I'm here, I'm available.
I would love to come in and talk about some
of this football and definitely talk about some of this basketball.
And it gives me a reason to come up here
and make people fat on Tilburger's an.

Speaker 3 (01:26:41):
I can't love it for the break. It's looking good,
all right, Yeah, come back this season any time. Good
luck the rest of the way, and we'll talk to
you soon.

Speaker 6 (01:26:46):
Thanks, guys, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (01:26:47):
Bun Bee the a team on Sports Talk seven ninety
two lifelong Houston sports guys named at him talking your teams.
Adam Clinton and Adam Weckfler are day.

Speaker 3 (01:27:10):
Back at it here for the four o'clock hourd is
the a team Sports Talk seven ninety Thanks again to
bun Bee for stopping by. He also left us some goodies,
so looking forward to that. You could hear the pain
in his voice talking about the Astros injuries right now,
and we'll just we'll keep it going because Brian Bogasvik

(01:27:31):
joined Sports Talk seven ninety earlier today and was talking
about all things Astros. It's been it's been tough sledding
of late for the Hometown nine. It's it's rough for
the Astros pitching specifically, and when Fromber and or Hunter
Brown aren't on their game, I feel like it's way

(01:27:52):
more magnified.

Speaker 4 (01:27:53):
But like I told you a couple of segments.

Speaker 3 (01:27:55):
Ago, the the Lance mccullors start tomorrow, I'm nervous.

Speaker 5 (01:28:02):
I think all the starts are the same now, especially
when it's not those two. And now you can almost
throw Fromber into it because he's going through it here
this month, Jason Alexander, he can have a billion great
starts in a row, and there's still a little bit
of hesitation. Hopefully that happens, But the next three days
there's no difference. Lance mccullors is pitching Friday, Spencer Arogating,
Christian Xavier pitching Saturday and Sunday. Honestly, I don't feel

(01:28:22):
any differently about any one of them.

Speaker 4 (01:28:24):
I hope that you know.

Speaker 5 (01:28:25):
Christian Aavier's initial start was good, his second start was
I mean, he only gave up the one run and
got out of that you know situation where he nearly
gave up a Grand Slam because hey, sus Sanchez was
able to bring the ball back into the park and
only gave up one run, just was cut short by illness.
Hopefully he's fully healthy from a strength standpoint, his body
is back into it, but there's a little concern he's

(01:28:46):
still only thrown the eight innings, and Spencer araghat he's
now had two starts he'd like to forget, very much
like to forget.

Speaker 4 (01:28:53):
So I think they're kind of they're up against it
every day. Every day.

Speaker 5 (01:28:56):
They're unsure of exactly what they're going to get from
any one of the pitchers. Certainly for these four games
against Baltimore. Baltimore's pitching staff is a lot better than
people think. If you just watch them, three of the
four guys that are pitching now, because there's only a
three game series, you saw each and every one of them,
and you also add Rogers to it, they're playing good baseball.
They kind of got this ball not rolling for the Astros.

(01:29:20):
That's when the zero's kept going up on the board
for the Astros, and it was because of this pitching staff.
And unless there's something to be gleaned from what we
were doing as a group wrong when we were stepping
to the plate from an approach standpoint, or if you
felt like you just hit into outs, which really wasn't
the case, not a lot of hard contact, and that
means they were winning. They were pitching the way they

(01:29:42):
want to. You know, even when some balls fall in
and there's a little traffic and you scratch out a
run or two, you just weren't doing They were winning.
That's all there is to it. So the situation they're
in is fine. It's amazing that they've been able to
play this poorly for a pretty extended period of time.
This isn't just the scoring drought, that they're in. This
is August. It's not just this week. This is beyond that.

(01:30:06):
It goes all the way back to the series in
LA where they swept the Dodgers. They have not played
good baseball since then, and they didn't sweep the Dodgers
a week ago or two weeks ago or three weeks ago.
They've played under five hundred for an extended period of
time and that's why obviously their lead from seven is
now down to a game and a half. It's actually
gone up since they first started their series with the

(01:30:26):
Baltimore Orioles. But that's not really even the point, because
I do think in this era of Astros baseball, the
sites are set a little bit higher. And if you
can reach fifteen seventeen games over five hundred, well all
the things that the Astros were dealing with, then you
probably believe we can get back to playing that kind
of baseball. If you believe they can get back to
playing that kind of baseball, then you can reopen the

(01:30:47):
idea of let's win. Let's not just win the division,
go to the playoffs and go back home like you
did last year. But can't you beat the Blue Jays?
Can't you beat the Tigers, you beat them twice in
six games. You beating the Blue all three times. Can't
you win in the postseason when whole, when healthy. Yes,
that's what I still think this team could still have

(01:31:09):
in mind.

Speaker 4 (01:31:10):
But they got to go out and do it. Obviously.

Speaker 3 (01:31:12):
By the way, Trey tweet Ten says, who scores seven
first Astros a regular season Texans? So yeah, there's a
there's a little bit of tongue in cheek right now.
It's but you know, going back to what bun Bee
was saying, it is a potentially fantastic time on the
horizon to be a Houston sports fan, because I don't
think this is going to last for a long time

(01:31:32):
for the Astros. Obviously, They've got too much talent and
they have played too much better at times this season.
And yeah, I am cautiously optimistic, like I've said about
the Texans, and I'm wildly optimistic, like hit the over
on win total if you are into that sort of thing,
you can on the rockets, end on the rockets.

Speaker 4 (01:31:52):
On the rockets. What have we settled in on what
we think it should be?

Speaker 3 (01:31:55):
What we think it should be? Yeah, because I think
over under or what we think it'll actually be as
far as win.

Speaker 5 (01:31:59):
To well win til it's just a matter of where
you're looking today and if you want to wait until
much closer to the season when it settles into that spot.
But most of what I've seen the other week, I
said it was fifty three and a half or fifty
four and a half.

Speaker 4 (01:32:10):
It's probably fifty four and a half.

Speaker 3 (01:32:12):
I think it's over. I mean, you've got a bank
on health, but like you've got.

Speaker 5 (01:32:18):
A bank on what are they playing for? If you're
in the same position you were in last year, you're
playing to be two. You're not playing to catch the thunder.
You're playing to keep those teams from passing you from
getting into that number two seat. And then are you
pushing for it? Last year's Rockets they push for every
single win they could get. They were a young team,

(01:32:38):
they were healthy enough to have guys like a man
out there most of the year. Obviously Jalen was out
there all of the year. I don't know that this
year's team is going to go about things the same way.

Speaker 4 (01:32:46):
There's expectations now. Their expectations are to win it all.

Speaker 5 (01:32:49):
Yeah, their expectations a will win multiple playoff series, so
make sure we're healthy at that point in time. Playing
our best basketball at that time is so an interesting
thing to consider when we get to that season. We're
in base ball season, We're about to start football season.
Very excited about upcoming Rockets season. We will have that
Brian boga Sevic for you coming up when we return.

Speaker 1 (01:33:11):
The ageed on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (01:33:17):
Both load of things still to get to before we
transition fully into the Astros on deck Show a little
hundred an hour from now here is they try to
advance themselves into the seventy win category to other teams
in the American League have gotten there. The Astros have
made the attempt to get there on four consecutive occasions,
but each of those games obviously losses four game losing streak.

(01:33:37):
Heading into play tonight against the Orioles, and of course
in Corpus, Jordan Alvarez is playing rehab game number two,
expected to be of three, and that third game tomorrow,
which hopefully will be the last, he'll need to say.

Speaker 4 (01:33:50):
Yeah, I am ready to go.

Speaker 5 (01:33:52):
Major announcement earlier this hour from the Southeastern Conference. We'll
get to that, but we promised you to hear a
little bit of Brian sec He visited the station earlier today,
as he does each and every week on the Bat
Thomas Show with Ross without Ross in this case, today
both Sevic focusing in on you'll hear this time a

(01:34:13):
little bit about what took place in their most recent game,
the overall outing and kind of big picture stuff.

Speaker 4 (01:34:18):
Regarding fromberveld As.

Speaker 14 (01:34:20):
It was certainly disappointing seeing Frombert not really go out
there and rise to the occasion. I think you got
to look at it through two different lenses. You know,
first of all, the physical right, like this is two
out of his last three start where the sinker hasn't
had the right shape. The curve ball has been pretty ineffective,
and so that's kind of a you got to sit down,

(01:34:41):
you got to look at some video. You got to
work on your mechanics in between starts and get that right.
You know, when he's kind of feeling for his sinker
a little bit and you see the velocity really varying,
that's when you can tell he's trying to find the
right shape and the right release point and he just
didn't have it yesterday. But that happens throughout the course
of the season. That's something that that you can fix.

(01:35:01):
That is unfortunate that it's happening now, but it just
is what it is. The other side of it is
kind of looking at it from you know, where's from
are at mentally right? This is something that we've seen
pop up throughout the course of his career, is when
things don't go his way, frustration builds and its snowballs
on him and you know, innings get away from him
and he kind of becomes his own worst enemy. And

(01:35:23):
we've never seen it like yesterday where it almost felt
like he was frustrated going into the game. Usually it
takes a blue pit and you know, some guys bunting
on him and trying to steal bases to really kind
of rattle him a little bit. It almost felt like
going into that game with where the offense has been,
it was almost like a, you know, instead of going
into that game thinking I'm going to be the guy
that elevates us, I'm going to be the guy that,

(01:35:45):
you know, even if we're not scoring runs, I'm going
to throw up a bunch of zeros and give us
a chance. It almost was a oh man, you know,
we're not going to score any runs. It's going to
be harder than it should be. It was almost a
defeated before you went out there kind of feeling. And
that's really concerning because is you need your best guys
to be the guys that kind of stand up and say, hey,
you made an error behind me, I'll pick you up.

(01:36:06):
You guys in scor any runs, I'll pick you up.
And that start to the game yesterday certainly was not that.

Speaker 7 (01:36:13):
And Brian, we got to be fair here.

Speaker 13 (01:36:15):
We don't want to be psychologist on the radio show.
We want to be people that talk about the game.
You've played the game, you know the intricacies of it.
But it is a pretty fair assertion to say that
if you're seeing that before the game, that's that's a
huge cause for concern. Now, he could have his dauber

(01:36:36):
down and then go throw seven innings of three hit
ball and spin and beautiful and get the high striking
account and we'd be like, well, that's just from her.

Speaker 4 (01:36:43):
But it's so.

Speaker 13 (01:36:45):
Disheartening because you know, I thought Hunter Brown went in
there going trek Scoopble is one.

Speaker 7 (01:36:50):
Of the best pitchers in the game.

Speaker 13 (01:36:52):
I've got to be my very best, and I thought
he had the moxy to do that.

Speaker 7 (01:36:55):
And I guess the thing is, not.

Speaker 13 (01:36:57):
Every player you've ever played with, Brian Bogus, or every
pitcher you've been with or you've covered or talked about
or played with, has that maxia of I don't care
what's going against this, We're I'm going to fight through it.
And maybe Fromber's one of those guys.

Speaker 14 (01:37:10):
But at the same time, we've seen him come up
big in big situations and playoff games in the past,
so it's not really that. It's more of just getting
him into the right head space because we know from
experience that he can be a guy that can go
out there and thrive in pressure pack situations, and you know,
sometimes it builds start overstart. There's been some things that

(01:37:31):
haven't gone Fromber's way, even when he's been really good
in a couple of starts recently. So it's really just
getting him in the right space. You know, in between starts,
you've got to work on things mechanically in your bullpen sessions,
but you also got to get in the right headspace.
And I think, you know, having a strong clubhouse, you know,
having Carlos Korea back, having a two way there to

(01:37:52):
kind of sit down with him and reassure him that
you know, we're all in this with you and we
need you. I think that's kind of where you got
to get him to because if he's right, I mean
I'm not talking about physically right, but when he's right
and he's going out there and taking on that challenge,
I mean, he's been up to it in the past.

Speaker 13 (01:38:10):
Brian bogasvik with us here on Sports Talk seven AI
Uh boogie this lineup construction. That's where I think a
lot of folks will call me and say, hey, why
is this player in front of this guy?

Speaker 7 (01:38:20):
Why is this guy hitting in this part of the order.

Speaker 13 (01:38:23):
And look, Joe's just trying to find something that works,
and unfortunately, when you've had such little offense the last
handful of days as well, try flip move different guys around.
Generally speaking, your assessment of the lineup in terms of
its up and down changes, I don't think there's much
to do with it, because it's not like it's been
a certain pocket of players that have done their job,

(01:38:43):
and it's just felt like a collective slump among the
entire team. Thus the case with no runs being scored
except for the two run Homer yesterday afternoon.

Speaker 14 (01:38:50):
Yeah, I mean, you only have, you know, the tools
that are at your disposal, And I mean we've seen
we've seen lineup tweaks throughout the course of the season
where if there's only a handful of guys who have
it going, you know, Joe's really tried to bunch those
guys up, so you have some semblance of you know,
guys stringing at backs together. The problem right now is
that it's not really going that way for anybody, and

(01:39:12):
you can only make a lineup.

Speaker 4 (01:39:13):
Out of what you got.

Speaker 14 (01:39:15):
And you know, they dropped Sanchez down in the in
the lineup a little bit, but you know, at some point,
the lineup is what it is, and the roster is
what it is, and it's on the players to go
out there and hit.

Speaker 5 (01:39:26):
It's on the players to go out there and hit.
And this is from a former player. He I mean,
it sounds so simple. And what he also said, you know,
this is what he has is whoever he has at
his disposal, a reminder, at his disposal today, unlike yesterday
or the day before or the day before, he has
Bryce Matthews at his disposal. The Astros made that roster

(01:39:47):
move today back with the Astros with Taylor Trammel with
the cervical sprain is now on the IL the ten day,
I l though I don't know if that's exactly how
long he will need to remain there. A couple of
car crash like collisions with the ground and wall for
Tremmel in the Astros last two games, late in the
game on Tuesday and early in the game on Wednesday.

(01:40:09):
He obviously had to leave the game in that bottom
of the first inning now goes to the IL. But
the Astros, I'm sure, especially because of the makeup of
the team, which didn't get any anything but stronger. From
a mental side of things, you added a veteran like
Carlos Korea into a situation where he was leaving a

(01:40:29):
team headed in the wrong direction.

Speaker 4 (01:40:32):
An organization headed in the wrong direction, for sure.

Speaker 5 (01:40:35):
But think about how many teams are probably still in
the playoff chase. You know, the top six teams plus
Cleveland plus Kansas City plus Texas plus Tampa.

Speaker 4 (01:40:46):
That's ten.

Speaker 5 (01:40:47):
There's only fifteen teams in the American League. Well, he
was on one of the other five that wasn't in
the playoff chase, and obviously they played it out like that,
but he was expected to come here and carry this
team well past the sea and help carry this team
into a strength position heading into the postseason.

Speaker 4 (01:41:04):
It has not worked out that way.

Speaker 5 (01:41:06):
He got off to such a hot start here that
even with the lack of pop in the last handful
of series from him, he's still been their most productive hitter,
bouncing around a couple of the top spots in the order,
playing a perfect good third base. They've bet a couple
of spectacular plays around the infield in the last couple
of days. And that's one other part of the deals
that were made in the reconfiguration of where these players

(01:41:28):
are pretty much every single day. And I know al
two Vay's at second base today, so maybe not today.

Speaker 4 (01:41:35):
They've got Gold.

Speaker 5 (01:41:35):
Glove caliber players at every spot on the infield, and
with two pitchers who induced a lot of ground balls
your aces, and it also helps you get out of
any trouble spot for any pitcher, it is going to matter,
and I think it has mattered throughout the season that
this team was like the team's prior to twenty twenty four.
The twenty twenty four Astros defensively took a step back

(01:41:55):
and it showed and it was pretty noticeable.

Speaker 7 (01:41:57):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (01:41:58):
And I remember talking about on the show daily almost
and I think they have gone in the right direction
this year. I think because the outfield needing to have
so many changes every day, that's a little bit out
of their control.

Speaker 4 (01:42:09):
They've played.

Speaker 5 (01:42:10):
I mean, Taylor Tremill's playing every spot in the outfield
on a regular basis, Hayesu Sanchez is bouncing from corner
to corner. They're changing center fielders almost every single day.
With Jake Myers sideline, it has suffered. Like the ball
that Tremmeell didn't catch, Jake Myers catches that. I think
Jacob Melton catches that, And I think Taylor Tremiell's a
very good outfielder. He just didn't catch that. And Hayesus
Sanchez has made some plays in the outfield already.

Speaker 4 (01:42:32):
As made that way, That's what I mean.

Speaker 5 (01:42:34):
He's made some poor plays in the outfield that were
part of his resume. He's not a top outfielder. He's
capable outfielder. The balance is supposed to be he crushes
right handed pitching. Well, he's not crushing any pitching right now,
and that has absolutely hurt this team, and the worst
part about it has just fallen in line with everybody
else in the lineup, and hopefully at some point this

(01:42:55):
is not gonna Nothing lasts forever, even your down times,
and I think that probably comes to an end at
some point during this weekend series, hopefully as early as
today mess.

Speaker 4 (01:43:06):
They sweep them.

Speaker 3 (01:43:07):
Well, I would hope for that too. I'm not expecting
a sweep. Three out of four will be great.

Speaker 5 (01:43:11):
Their top picture and arguably top pictures are available for
this series.

Speaker 3 (01:43:17):
Astros. No, they are not available for this series unless
you want to tell me. It's Jason Alexander and he goes.

Speaker 5 (01:43:23):
Today mentioned the SEC had a fairly sizable noteworthy announcement
earlier today, something we have not yet gotten to. We
will get into that as we continue here in this
four o'clock hour. We also bring you our signature segment,
What's Up with That?

Speaker 4 (01:43:37):
That comes your way next right here. On a Thursday
edition of The eighteen.

Speaker 1 (01:43:42):
The Age on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 4 (01:43:48):
A new signature seven called.

Speaker 1 (01:43:53):
What's Up?

Speaker 2 (01:43:56):
What's up with That?

Speaker 4 (01:43:58):
What's up?

Speaker 6 (01:44:00):
Less? It was.

Speaker 3 (01:44:04):
Do that.

Speaker 4 (01:44:08):
All right?

Speaker 3 (01:44:09):
It's what's up with that? It's our signature segment on
a Thursday. Now, this this category is so wide ranging
that the possibilities are endless. And with the sports world,
you know, I like to say that our jobs are
never boring because they're always changing. We will never go
to a cubicle every day and sit in front of

(01:44:29):
a screen and do monotonous things that are the same,
repetitive thing.

Speaker 5 (01:44:32):
Yeah, we sit at the conference table in the back
of this of the office, not a.

Speaker 4 (01:44:36):
Cubicle, right, that's the only difference. That's the only difference. No,
it is always changing.

Speaker 3 (01:44:40):
I don't know, Like we could wake up and the
astros could be in a cheating scandal.

Speaker 4 (01:44:46):
Or it just happened. It's I mean, it's crazy. You
never know what's coming at you.

Speaker 5 (01:44:49):
So this story is wacko, absolute lunacy. But I'm curious
which portion of the headline makes you shake your eyeballs
back into place. It's a two part headline from our
friends over at TMZ Sports. It's alarming, for sure, But
like I said, which part part one or part two
makes you?

Speaker 4 (01:45:10):
Wait? What?

Speaker 5 (01:45:12):
Well on this headline, I'll read it for you and
everybody else. It reads Jalen Brown's dad arrested for attempted
murder that's part one. It continues after a parent parking
lot dispute.

Speaker 3 (01:45:29):
Okay, the initial is obviously the answer, but the secondary
part is what makes you say it again, because even
though there's never a good reason to kills somebody, there,
you go, good job. I think, No, that's probably pretty right. Well,
I mean, you know, if like I saw a really

(01:45:49):
rotten story that I can tell you about, but it'll
sidetrack us.

Speaker 4 (01:45:52):
There's certain situations.

Speaker 3 (01:45:54):
Where yeah, you know what I mean, yeah, so, but
parking that's not.

Speaker 1 (01:45:59):
One of them.

Speaker 5 (01:46:00):
Some of the deats and again follow us through Boston
Celtics superstar Jalen Brown's dad, former boxer Orsels Brown, was
arrested for attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a youth football
coach in a parking lot dispute for TMC Sports in Vegas.

Speaker 3 (01:46:18):
The Vegas Metro Police are investigating a stabbing that went
down at All American Park Wednesday, stating two men were
in a verbal altercation over a parking space when the
suspect stabbed the victim multiple times in the stomach. Now,

(01:46:38):
before we go any further, I would like to thankfully
point out that it's attempted murder, meaning he survived. But
I'd like to go back to the point that what
are we doing here? A verbal altercation over you know,
road rage. Stuff happens all the time, especially in this town.
I see it myself. Have I been a part of it?

Speaker 4 (01:46:59):
Yeah? Unfortunately, but like it happens.

Speaker 3 (01:47:05):
Never has it happened, at least with me, where there's
some verbal altercation of whatever kind, be it parking or
anything else, and somebody stabbed somebody else.

Speaker 4 (01:47:13):
But that wasn't the case here.

Speaker 5 (01:47:15):
I'm not sure if people probably are not. They may
or may not have been aware that he was a
former professional boxer and a long career, may or be
pretty should be pretty aware that he produced a NBA
size basketball player typical of an NBA player to be
the size that Jalen brown Is plays the wing sixty

(01:47:36):
seven sixty eight reasonable size, right person, not reasonably sized
when compared to his dad, Marcellus Otis Brown, who's seven
feet tall. What's at this present time in the neighborhood
of three hundred pounds?

Speaker 3 (01:47:50):
Yeah, what's more terrifying being stabbed over a parking altercation
or being stabbed over a pallar carking altercation by someone
who's seven feet tall and three hundred pounds.

Speaker 4 (01:48:00):
It's why you.

Speaker 5 (01:48:01):
I mean, I try to tell the people that are
learning about the rules of the road and becoming new drivers.

Speaker 4 (01:48:07):
Yes, it really does. People really well.

Speaker 5 (01:48:10):
I have a couple of them around the house. You
do honking the horn if you're trying to avoid an
accident because maybe the person didn't see you or you
didn't see them. It's perfect, that's good you want to
avoid that. I think it all costs keep everybody in
your vehicle and their vehicle and all their vehicles safe.

Speaker 4 (01:48:26):
If something happens.

Speaker 5 (01:48:27):
With being you know, a car comes in front of
you at a rapid speed and you don't think it
was very safe.

Speaker 4 (01:48:33):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (01:48:34):
If it's a parking spot that you thought maybe you
were there in time to nab first, and someone thought
the same and took it, okay.

Speaker 4 (01:48:42):
You don't know the situation the other person is in.
You don't know what the other person.

Speaker 5 (01:48:46):
You don't know anything about the other person, what they
might be capable of and over something like this, a
rule of the road, a driving incident, a red light,
running a stop sign, running a parking lot dispute.

Speaker 4 (01:48:57):
Just move along.

Speaker 5 (01:48:58):
It's as positively without debate. There's nothing about trying to
stand your ground or you know, prove your strength mentally physically.

Speaker 4 (01:49:10):
What just move along? Not worth it? This is the
easy decision.

Speaker 5 (01:49:15):
This is like to you, all ten of your fingers,
especially the two that rest in the middle of each
of your hands, should remain in place, not extended.

Speaker 3 (01:49:24):
Why do I feel like this is the automotive version
of not throwing at batters for you, just don't do it.

Speaker 4 (01:49:31):
It's dangerous. Just let it go.

Speaker 5 (01:49:33):
Well, in this situation, it was nearly deadly. What just dangerous?

Speaker 3 (01:49:40):
So how about this the altercation of note here? According
to the arrest report, the alleged victim's girlfriend actually told
cops that it was over brown dinging their vehicle with
the door of a Lincoln Navigator as you got out
of the passenger side.

Speaker 4 (01:50:02):
Now everybody hates that.

Speaker 3 (01:50:04):
This is why some people call you that guy that
parks way out in the parking lot so that there's
no other cars around you so you don't get your
door dayed.

Speaker 4 (01:50:11):
But I hate that.

Speaker 3 (01:50:13):
Got a dimple on my truck right now, and it
drives me crazy because I'm that guy.

Speaker 4 (01:50:16):
Now I don't your car's not smiling well, I just do.

Speaker 3 (01:50:19):
I park insanely far away from the front door, just
so that I won't have people around me.

Speaker 4 (01:50:24):
I'm not that guy.

Speaker 3 (01:50:24):
If I drove something that was like insanely expensive, I
might do that. But then again, I don't think I
would have that as my everyday driver. But like ador
ding is annoying. The woman stated that the coach identified
is cross to pula.

Speaker 4 (01:50:41):
I don't know how to say.

Speaker 3 (01:50:42):
It, then got out of his car to check out
the damage, but Brown brushed it off and staid it
was simply a bump, before calling him a name that
I won't say here on the air, but it rhymes
with mitch and sass, and then started to walk away.
After a back and forth, the woman claims the two
agreed to duke it out another bad decision. He didn't

(01:51:04):
know he was a boxer, though, but he did know
he was seven feet and three hundred pounds.

Speaker 5 (01:51:07):
Did you pass along the information of the person who's
not seven foot three hundred pounds?

Speaker 4 (01:51:12):
Not your size of that person? No, Knight's in there.

Speaker 5 (01:51:14):
Hold on, it's probably noteworthy. Five sixty uh huh.

Speaker 3 (01:51:19):
Not great unless you're like, I don't know, Manny Pacio,
I'm trying to think of someone who's that statue, who's
lethal with their hands anyway. Uh, But when Tupuola's back
was turned, Brown pulled an object from his right side
and swung his arm in a stabbing motion, striking the
coach in his back. And then the woman stated that
Brown used his left hand to grab the right shoulder

(01:51:42):
of the victim, stabbed him several more times.

Speaker 4 (01:51:45):
And then, as said, the.

Speaker 3 (01:51:47):
Coach initially tried to fight back before attempting to run away,
and Brown chased after him. Seriously, this is like a
bear coming after you in the woods. He's already bitten you,
and you're trying to run away and he's still coming.

Speaker 4 (01:51:59):
I do terrify.

Speaker 5 (01:52:00):
Yeah, better bet would be just screaming at him and
seeing what happens.

Speaker 4 (01:52:03):
That's what you're supposed to do with the bear, right.

Speaker 3 (01:52:06):
Yeah, he's in critical condition in the ICU bad situation.
Quite clearly, Celtics man not a great offseason for their
two superstars for very different reasons.

Speaker 2 (01:52:20):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven.

Speaker 15 (01:52:22):
Ninety winding down the four o'clock hourd is the eight
team Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 4 (01:52:36):
The SEC casually.

Speaker 3 (01:52:38):
Mentioned today casually, Hey, we're just gonna go with the
nine game conference football schedule starting next year.

Speaker 5 (01:52:45):
It's far from a casual announcement. This is a pretty
big deal and they know it. Everybody else knows it.
Did think they were headed in this direction. They will
go to this. We haven't even started this season. We
haven't even started the arch manning march to the SEC
crown and the national title. We will in two saturdays
from now, and it will be the last year of
the eight game conference schedule in the SEC. Over the years,

(01:53:08):
they've made changes to their conference schedule. Had to the
first time recently back in ninety two, went from ten
teams to twelve teams, so they began playing an eight
game conference schedule. Many years before that it was seven
to six or an undetermined about and now it will
be nine. The structure of the conference remains unchanged, single standings,

(01:53:28):
non divisional structure. The good news is and I figured
they would be able to work it out this way,
and this was always the plan. You're still going to
see traditional rivalries. Three of those nine scheduled SEC games
will be focused on maintaining traditional rivalries. Texas and Oklahoma
are both in the SEC. Texas and Oklahoma will continue
playing football games and many others just like that all around.

(01:53:51):
The SEC will be able to keep that intact, which
is a huge, huge draw for not just the game itself,
but for every part of life that many of these
college football fans live in football season, out of football season,
in their marriage, all this stuff. That stuff matters, So
that will remain intact. The other six games rotate around

(01:54:12):
each season, but you will see every other SEC team
at least once every two years, and we'll see teams
at least twice every four.

Speaker 4 (01:54:21):
Years, with those games being home and away.

Speaker 5 (01:54:24):
Also, while this will make their schedules difficult more difficult
because an additional SEC game in ninety five percent percent
of the cases, we'll be adding a much more difficult
schedule than your random additional non conference game. But they
still are requiring SEC teams to schedule at least one additional,

(01:54:47):
as they term it, high quality non conference game from
the ACC, Big Ten or Big twelve conferences or Notre
Dame every single season.

Speaker 4 (01:54:57):
They how did this happen?

Speaker 3 (01:55:00):
How what happened Notre Dame just being its own conference essentially,
even though it's not.

Speaker 5 (01:55:04):
Well which of the schools in the country these d
one schools, these programs that play football. See if you
can come up with an answer to this question, which
one of them, all by itself, without any other help,
without any other conference affiliation, without any other teams being
a part of it, got their own television network over
the air to be their broadcast home. And the answer,

(01:55:25):
of course is Notre Dame the NBC, And it was
long before that, clearly in a considered to be in
a class of their own, and they have remained there.
Now the quality of their program should have fewer people
mocking it, and we still almost always do. Like just
last year's just another example. Is not a great any
greater than any other example. Did it not look like

(01:55:47):
Notre Dame belonged among the best teams in the country
last year? Yeah, they absolutely did, and I don't see
why they won't now they're up and down like every team.
But even Texas is no different than them. You know,
a handful of years ago, before the last two years,
the last three years, maybe Texas was run of the
mill middle and trying to can we keep going with
mac or were going in the right direction? How long

(01:56:07):
is Charlie strong need to stay here?

Speaker 6 (01:56:09):
Is?

Speaker 4 (01:56:09):
Do we need to move on from Tom Herman all
those things.

Speaker 5 (01:56:11):
That's that's been a lot of their recent history, and
same thing with USC and the time before Lincoln Riley
and probably the time currently with Lincoln Riley on and
on down the line. They're no different. Notre Dame is
in my opinion absolutely a part of this should be.
It's it stinks the manner in which they're kind of
allowed to have it and go about it. But they
their program and I do think with their current head coach,

(01:56:33):
they're probably headed to staying there. I don't I don't
know that I consider him a better I don't know
where I think he's best at, but I think he's
good at everything enough, good at endgame, good at recruiting,
good at running a program, good at coaching football that
they're going to be able to stay there for as
long as he's there moving forward, Coach Freeman.

Speaker 3 (01:56:58):
It is fascinating to me because, yeah, they are among
the best right now, but when they're not, they still
have that network.

Speaker 5 (01:57:06):
Well and again it's not it's not called it's not
quite like the Longhorn Network.

Speaker 3 (01:57:10):
Well, yeah, but it is. I did like the fact
that you said on air or over the air.

Speaker 5 (01:57:14):
I tried to create it so people wouldn't think I
was talking about Texas, because that will actually see it.
It's different, But it was they were in a position.
It was so simple. Hey, we'd like to give you
three hundred million dollars spread out over fifteen years. Do
you think that might be something you'd be interested in?
I mean, what are they gonna say?

Speaker 10 (01:57:28):
No.

Speaker 5 (01:57:28):
Notre Dame comes into the year expected to be a
top ten team, and I think that's accurate. And I
think based on who they should have on the twenty
twenty six fighting Irish, they should be in the very
same position a year from now. And we talked about
it when the respective rankings came out the last couple
of weeks, the preseason rankings, it isn't really overwhelming. And

(01:57:50):
when you consider the top twelve, since we're still in
the twelve team playoff era, it's not overwhelmingly sec they
have nobody has more teams than them, but there are
other or no conference has more teams than them, but
there are other conferences that are right there with them.
And I do think the quality of football being played
in the Big ten is very, very good. They also
won the national title last year. They're also the marquee

(01:58:11):
game of the opening weekend one of them, with Texas
and Ohio State and clearly the game between LSU and
Clemson being the other. And that includes all four conferences
just in those two matchups to open up the season
for them. Remember, today's the twenty first there's college football
games in two days. There's college football games with two
ranked teams playing one another in two days in Dublin, Ireland,

(01:58:33):
with both top twenty ranked Kansas State and Iowa State
getting together.

Speaker 4 (01:58:39):
It is here. We are talking about it because we're
not just looking forward to it.

Speaker 5 (01:58:44):
It's arrived. It's football season. Preseason ends this weekend in
the NFL. The next time they're on the field two
thursdays from then, it's a regular season game. The college
football season. This weekend, from eleven am through the evening,
you have college football. Your Saturdays are come plead again. Well,
if you're a male who likes football, you don't think

(01:59:06):
no females at the one hundred and five thousand seat stadium.

Speaker 3 (01:59:09):
What I'm saying across the country, what I'm saying is
for the wives and significant others who dread this part
of the calendar every year credit because they're losing the
people you just talked about because they love us, No,
because they are growing to miss us. No, because they
get time to themselves. They're gonna get mad because we're
enjoying ourselves.

Speaker 5 (01:59:27):
Oh, they don't like us having fun. No, that's you're
seeking out. You're looking at it the wrong way.

Speaker 4 (01:59:31):
The law.

Speaker 3 (01:59:32):
Some of them like going to games. Some of them
drag you to the games. Well, you better marry those
I did, otherwise your life will be miserable forever.

Speaker 5 (01:59:40):
Everything about it is great. You can, you can fall
in line with the people that fall in line with you,
and hopefully you've done that everybody.

Speaker 4 (01:59:47):
Oh, so be a sheep. I see what you're saying.

Speaker 5 (01:59:49):
No, you find the people that, hey, I'm in with you.
I like this too, you know it's funny, or they
don't mind that you like it so much.

Speaker 4 (01:59:57):
That second part right there, that part right there.

Speaker 3 (02:00:00):
I married somebody who thought it was so cool the
first few months we were together, especially like once we
were married, I would say something and then the guy
on TV would say that exact same thing right after me,
and she thought that was just amazing that I could
do that.

Speaker 5 (02:00:13):
You act like after you met in the hallways at
the radio station with a couple of stations in the cluster.
Months and months after that, she was still wondering, I
guess aloud, which station does.

Speaker 4 (02:00:24):
He work for?

Speaker 3 (02:00:24):
Us?

Speaker 4 (02:00:24):
Do for a litleit? I know he works here, he
works in radio, but what does he do? Ask her
about watching sporting events with me? Now? Why are you?
Why are you yelling so much? I don't even want
to be in the same room with him, disaster. He's
so out of control.

Speaker 3 (02:00:39):
He's baking furniture, he's yelling, he's scaring the dogs, and
I'm like.

Speaker 4 (02:00:42):
Shut up, it's not that bad. All the time sounds bad,
that's all right.

Speaker 5 (02:00:48):
We will get to the five o'clock hour next to
get a little bit closer to the Astros on Deck
show here on Sports Talk seven
