Speaker 1 (00:02):
The two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam raised.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
My Earl.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Nolan multed by the magnificent roller coaster ride that is
Houston Sports. Chill lage down for the only homegrown afternoon
team is Talking Your Teams.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the eight Teams?
Speaker 4 (00:35):
A A.
Speaker 5 (00:41):
What's going on Houston, Texas? It is a Tuesday edition
of the eight Team. It's Sports Talks seven to ninety.
Wex ac Cole Thompson with you until six o'clock tonight.
Astros getting it done last night, making us all a
little bit more puckered than we needed.
Speaker 6 (01:00):
The Astro is getting it done and of course, oh
my gosh, Christian Javier bringing it of course immediately after not.
Speaker 5 (01:08):
Looking like he was gonna bring it.
Speaker 6 (01:09):
Of course, do you rea driving in the early run,
the Astros piling up six more?
Speaker 5 (01:16):
Dumh? Well, get to all the feel good stuff about
the pregame and all that. Do you remember and this
is a question for both of you, but you'll be
the one that answers this, wax. Do you remember the
all caps text that I sent you when it became
seven to two?
Speaker 6 (01:28):
Yeah, probably unreadable. Most have words that.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
Are radio safe, so so right abound to play in
the car though, well, I say, yes, especially do you
still have the female serie voice or was it? Did
you change it to the male British guy? It's a lady, Okay.
I wish I could. I wish I could just reduplicate
that round. So I sent that. I also sent that
exact same text to my wife who was in the
other room trying to get our son to sleep. Uh
(01:54):
she knew, like there's certain.
Speaker 6 (01:55):
Who wound up from day one of school?
Speaker 5 (01:57):
He was, but he got a drone, he got a drum?
Speaker 6 (02:01):
Is that what they handed out the first day?
Speaker 5 (02:02):
No, let me tell you how.
Speaker 7 (02:05):
I know.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
We're raising an absolute ahole okay, and that's affectionate meaning possible, Yes,
absolutely term. But I keep telling her that it's gonna
get worse, Like you know, Sissy moved into college over
the weekend. That's what she called. Yes, she's what she's called.
And uh, he got he got the shaft a little
bit because it was all about her and he had
(02:27):
been promised if he was good, which he's always good
for the most part. He can go rogue every now
and again, but if he's good, he's gonna get a toy.
I'm like, are you freaking kidding me? Like, what what
did he do to get? He has fifty thousand toys
that he doesn't even play with. Oh my gosh. Yes,
it's known as my wife a weapon of mass destruction.
As far as it now. She's a great mom. She
(02:49):
really is. She's not even a helicopter mom. But stuff
like that just I'm like, oh my gosh, we are
going to raise the softest kid on the planet. The
point of all that is he got the shaft because
we didn't. We did end up getting one on Sunday
when we left Austin. We ended up leaving later than
we wanted to, and we ended up bringing her car
back because of a parking situation. All of this nobody
cares about. But the point of it is he didn't
(03:10):
get that toy. So he's all wound up. Because when
I get home yesterday, I'm thinking he's gonna have, like,
I don't know, something small. He calls them stufties, but
they're really like little plush animals, something of that nature.
I walk in the door last night from the show,
you know what he says to me, Dad, I got
a drone, Like that's the first thing out of his mouth.
And I'm like, you got him a drone? And I
(03:31):
look at her and she's like, don't ask, it's a
small one. She's like, it was only thirty dollars. I'm like,
why does he have a drone? And why is he
flying it in our house? Because that's exactly what was happening.
So the point of all this is she knew that
I really wanted to see that game last night. There
are certain games more than others that I'm like, Okay,
first pitch, I'm locked in in this case before that
(03:52):
because of all you saw the first four pitches, I
did the pomp and the pomp and circumstance. Yeah, I
saw one of those pitches deposited to the craw for boxes.
But Christian Javier looked good after the first four pitches did.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
Xavier threw a lot of strikes, worked hitters, I think
in a way that you would like to see him
move forward with, and ended up giving up only one
hit during the time of the game where he got
all fifteen of his outs. First two batters both got hits,
Anthony with a ringing single and Bregman obviously with the
home run that put the Astros behind the eight ball
(04:26):
with two nothing deficit, and that was that pretty much
for the Red Sox. Definitely against Christian Xavier, complete.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
That scenario, because it's not just because they were behind
the eight ball because they were down to nothing. They
were down to nothing to Garrett Crochet, who's been awesome
this year.
Speaker 6 (04:41):
Astros have had some pretty good luck, as a wrong word,
pretty good success against pretty good pitchers, and this game
yesterday obviously was no different. You could make the case
that this was the least successful start that the potential
Cy Young Award winner will have all seasons. Certainly to date,
he's not given up more than five runs in a game.
He gave up five runs to the Astros had to
(05:02):
play catch up, but Christian Javier allowed for them to
do that, getting him to the bottom of the third
inning with just that two nothing deficit. A Correa with
a big single which was the third hit in a
row all started by cam Smith, Jeremy Pania, and then
Korea's single going the opposite way with a pitch to
bring home cam Smith. Christian Walker absolutely smashed a ball
(05:23):
that bounced off the wall in center field. Left center
field and that put the Astros in front, where they
remained comfortably for the rest of the night, from up
three two to five two because Chas McCormick absolutely crushed
the ball for the first time all season over the fence.
His first home run made their lead three when it
was one. Couple innings later, Ureus did the same thing,
(05:46):
a two run homer well over four hundred feet the
lead from three now to five, and Caleb ort looked
very good again out of the bullpen. Hector Naris looked
like Hector Naris out of the bullpen. I don't know
if today is the last day he'll be in an
Astros uniform.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
Oh my god.
Speaker 6 (06:00):
Congrats to him for ten years of major league service,
and congrats to the Astros for on three different occasions,
signing him to help him get to ten years of
major league service. Good career, good career with the Astros.
He's not been a very good pitcher this year, and
it hasn't been any different with his third team. The
Astros are that third team got quick two outs in
the seventh inning and then homer double double, and the
(06:21):
Astros knew.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
Well, it's probably enough for him again.
Speaker 6 (06:23):
Homer double double, then Steven Okert unfortunately got ahead of
Roman Anthony and it didn't really matter. Anthony absolutely smashed
the ball into the Astros bullpen and bing, bang boom.
The Astros were only up seven to six, but that's
how the game ended. Annuel de las Santos came in
and got three huge outs, and Bennett Sussa came in
(06:43):
for a four pitch save four pitches to get Anthony
out and got him on the strike two, three and
four or his second, third and fourth pitch after falling
behind one to zero.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
He got it.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
Astros took care of it, and there was a question
at that time as the game evolved, you know, Brian
King has pissed a bunch lately, he's probably down. Brian Abray,
who's pitched a bunt late bunch lately, he's probably down.
Josh Hater has not pitched a bunch lately, not so
much that you wouldn't think he would now be available.
He probably wouldn't have pitched in a seven to two game.
He probably would be somethinged in a seven to six game. However,
(07:17):
he was not was not ever warming up, and obviously
there was no opportunity for him to come in because
he was unavailable, which show a spot had told everybody
asked of the game, because when he came in and
did some of his PLO work, he said, hey, man,
this don't this doesn't feel right. My shoulder is giving
me discomfort. Let's go ahead and put a cease on
my work and let's run some tests. So hopefully soon,
(07:42):
I don't know if today is the soon, but we'll
have a little bit better of an idea if a
roster move is necessary, if something more significant is necessary.
Josh Hater has been incredible, arguably the best closer in
the American League this season.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
It's certainly among them.
Speaker 6 (07:58):
It's a huge reason why when the Astros have leads
and wins in their sights, they've gotten them and it's
a monster advantage when you know when you're up, you're
gonna win, and they have, and they have a one
game lead in the division.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
With uncertainty about their closer.
Speaker 6 (08:15):
Uncertainty will be about what was thought to be their
best hitter, and uncertainty about a center fielder who all
of a sudden had a bang up awesome offensive season underway.
And yet as I said, they still sit in first place.
They doubled their lead in the division last night it
is now one game.
Speaker 5 (08:31):
Yeah, exactly, they doubled their lead. I saw one Jimoke
on social media that was like, well, I think we
know what's going to happen tonight. He was a Seattle fan.
He's one of those trident people, like it's something or
other in the Handle is trident. And you know he's
a fanboy. He's a Seattle Variety fanboy.
Speaker 6 (08:50):
And he was like, good to be a fan less
good to be a fanboy, right, it's even worse to
be a fangirl, especially if you're a guy.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
But anyways, he was just assuming that, yeah, give me
a tie going into Tuesday's action because Astros aren't gonna
beat Garrett Crochet. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
Not a listener to the A team. Apparently you can
listen via the app if you want. You can just
tune us in right there on Sports Talk seven ninety.
You heard it here as we closed up shop yesterday
and turned things over to the Astros on deck show easy, people,
just relax. Two series wins to close out the road trip.
Two more series wins on the way, Boston's first, Baltimore's next,
Then we'll see where things stand after the next six
(09:27):
games on the rock the Astros next hit the road.
Do have news from both of the other squads that
we talk about most here on the show. The Rockets
among them, made official today with the NBA and their
partners announce announcing a bunch of their signature games. Who
already knew the Rockets were playing on opening Night, the
absolute very first game of the season, which you'll have
right here on Sports Talk seven to ninety on Tuesday,
October twenty first an earlier tip as they are on
(09:50):
the road at the banner lifting Oklahoma City Thunder, and
then of course Christmas Day they will be playing the
Los Angeles Lakers. Now know that that will be a
seven pm Central time tip for that game in LA.
We don't know the other eighty games for the Rockets,
few other teams to get to find out two or
three of their contests. Clutch was in downtown New York
today helping with the announcements. But Thursday the NBA will
(10:15):
release the remainder of the NBA schedule. The final other
eighty games we are not yet certain of. And the
Texans went to the heat today yesterday practice inside today
out there with the heat tomorrow, I expect them to
be back inside and not necessarily inside the bubble, but inside.
And then Thursday, the Carolina Panthers will be in town
for the most important time of training camp to date
(10:38):
when they get together for joint practices. Was announced earlier
today and Demico O Ryan's commented on it. We'll let
you hear from him in the next segment about it.
But Brevin Jordan's twenty twenty five season is over. He
was placed on injured reserve. When you place a player
on injured reserve prior to the season, prior to cuts
being made, that is not if he can come off
that he's not coming off. It's season ending injured reserve.
(11:00):
With the devastating injury he suffered yesterday, they made an
acquisition today, signing a tackle. He was on the practice
field today running with the twos at both left and
right tackle, Connor McDermott. But a tight end is probably
also going to be going to need to be added
to this team. But I'll fill you in on some
of the details of what took place at practice today
(11:20):
over at the NRG Stadium's practice fields for the Texans,
and we got a lot of good stuff to get
to today looking forward to it.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
A Tuesday edition of The eighteen. Yeah, straight ahead, we
will panic about Josh Hater's shoulder police, It's gonna be awesome.
All that more here on a Tuesday edition of the show.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (11:48):
I was even just found before I met you would
drink too much, and that's an issue. But I'm okay.
I was both complimenting and disparaging my co host off
the air just now the eight team Sports Talk seven ninety.
My name is Adam Clanton. He is Adam Wexler, and
he is just the He's the best of both worlds
to work with each and every day you're on Sports
(12:10):
Talks seven ninety. He's right here, he can hear all
of this. All right, let's let's do the thing we
always do. We'll role play. I'll be me and you
be you. So I'll start panicking about the fact that
the one of the best closers in the game suddenly
has the dreaded D word going on with him. Right now.
You can't tell me that I'm wrong.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
No, I'm not gonna tell you I'm wrong. You have
a player who throws with his left arm, elbow wrist,
haand shoulder, and he's been doing a lot of it
this year at a very very high level. He's coming
off of an outing where he threw excessively for him
all pitches, et cetera.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
How many was it thirty eight?
Speaker 6 (12:47):
He comes to the ballpark and goes through his normal
routine and realizes it doesn't feel right. He doesn't know
what's wrong. He didn't hear a pop. It doesn't hurt
that badly. It hasn't been broken, and he didn't have
a household accident. And the team doesn't know what's wrong
either because they haven't done any tests. So what do
you want them to call it?
Speaker 5 (13:06):
Well, it hurts, it's not about it's just because we
always approach things like this differently. This is not about
this incident. It's about prior incidents using this same word
that we all have PTSD about the word birds. Yeah,
not all, I don't. That's the word I would use
if I should, and you should not. There's no other
word to use in this instance. If they continue to
(13:26):
use it after anning until men ninety, you guys know
there's somebody out there listening right now that heard the
word discomfort about Josh hater and said, ah bleep in
their carven Like, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (13:39):
We will hear from Joe Spot coming up at three
point thirty. We'll hear from him before then, Like I
want people to hear it. So you know, if you
had a chance to hear the word like they literally used.
It wasn't in a release. We didn't get it secondhand.
It was the word uttered by the manager after the
game when it asked about the availability of that particular player.
So he said it because it's accurate. It they're just
(14:01):
they were just made aware of it a couple of
hours ago. He got to the ballpark get fill throat,
you know. Three days later and they're withholding information that
they clearly have internally. I know that they've done tests
on and they know the answer right. So three days
from now, I'll sit back, I'll relax and we can
have this higher discomfort segment.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
Oh, I can't wait for that. A discomfort segments schedule
provide you the platform Friday show here on the.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
By Thursday or Friday. They say he has a loose
body in his elbow.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
There's some gremlins in there. Situation.
Speaker 6 (14:34):
Hopefully they say he just needs rest. But in the meantime,
we'd like to have an available pitcher, So we're going
ahead ahead and put him on the fifteen day I.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
L okay, give me this, at least grant me this.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
At least Laddin over here rained on the parade of
what should have been. I'll be hones that is totally fair,
and it did. How much runway till the playoffs? Is
there almost none? The he ends next month? Well, I
was just talking about season over in September. So if
(15:06):
a player gets hurt in mid August and it's a pitcher, well,
when's he coming back? Is he back in a couple
of days because it's nothing that'd be awesome? Is he
back because he just needs fifteen days away and there's
no surgery, there's nothing like this, it's not serious.
Speaker 5 (15:19):
Well, that'd be great.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
Anything beyond that, okay, Well, then what does he need
to do to first recover and then present himself able
to get major league hitters out? Because guess where Josh
Hater's pitching next for the Astros. Not in the seventh
inning of a five run game. He's not starting a game.
He's not going to become an opener. Just to see
if he's Okay, he's going to be coming into the
ninth kime of the game really where they need a
(15:41):
lockdown performance.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
Yeah, you really make your head explode?
Speaker 7 (15:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (15:44):
How long until they call up Ryan Presley's cell phone? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (15:48):
I would think the Astros probably already have a pretty
good idea about how he feels health wise, because that's
something I would do if I were the Astros. Same
reason you brought Hector Garrison, same reason that they have continuously.
I mean, Delo Santos, same thing. Just released by the
Braves after having three months of very good pitching for them,
had a two weeks of poor performances, and they're not
in the race. They don't need to see De Lo
(16:10):
Santo's pitch anymore for them. They need to give the
ball to other people they want more information about for
their future because he's not a part of it, and
the Cubs are similar. Cubs are in the race, so
those innings are of great significance to them. But he
has had a couple of instances talking about Presley now
where he's struggled to get guys out. The vast majority
of the season, he has pitched scoreless baseball. If you
(16:32):
look at the number of appearances he's made and the
number of times he's been scored upon in those appearances,
it's pretty low. It's the kind of number they are,
the kind of numbers you would want and would get
from a successful reliever. But he gave up runs in
two of his first three outings. He had that extra
inning performance where all eight batters he faced plus the
guest runner all scored and nine runs came home in
(16:52):
one appearance, just after he got his ZRA back down
into the low threes for a second time this year
with a bunch of good auts out the last week
to ten days of his Cub's time were not very successful.
Once again, do you know his periphery numbers, the numbers
that kind of give you more of an indication of
how he's pitching. They're awful. They're trending in the wrong direction.
(17:13):
Why you would not want to bring him here are
staring you in the face, especially for the type of
situations he would be brought here to pitch in. He's
be pitching in the Caleb Orts situation. To be honest
with you, oh Susa, King, Abrau, Hayter, all are more trustful.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
That's the question you have to ask yourself, and I
think they already have and they probably answered it, and
the decision has already been made, which is they're not
bringing him in because the guys they have are better
than him.
Speaker 6 (17:35):
Yeah, I think they're in pretty good shape. And again,
one reason why you might be able to make a
roster move regarding Hector Nerris a because he pitched yesterday
and thus maybe wouldn't be available today, So it might
just speed up the process. Sean Dubin, for all I
can tell, is perfectly healthy. He has made his rehab starts.
He's pitched successfully, not from a result standpoint, even though
they were very good results, but from being able to
(17:57):
pitch on back to back days, being able to get
the velo he had, having command of his pitches like
he did when he was one of the astros. You
could have argued he was their best right handed reliever,
but one of the guys that got more and more
trust from his pitching coaches, his manager, obviously his teammates.
If that is in fact the case, and he is
available and healthy to be activated, that's certainly an option
(18:18):
you might have on Nerris would obviously need to be
dfaight if you moved on from de los Stantos, who
didn't pitch for a few days after getting here and
then pitched pretty well last night. Had he not started
the ninth inning, I would have been a heck of
a debut with the Astros. Two pitches both off the plate,
second one resulting in a caught stealing inning over brilliant job.
Way to go, wait to strand that runner. He threw
(18:39):
two pitches off the plate, and I think astute follower
of mine on the X platform asked kind of a
I think I already know the answer kind of way
did he go to home plate quickly? Did he have
a good timing mechanism from getting in the stretch and
throwing the ball home?
Speaker 5 (18:55):
I e.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
Did the catcher actually have a chance for the first
time almost all season to throw a runner out? And
the answer is yes, and Yiner did. I don't know
if there's a little bit of pop time delay or
his mph on his throas are a little bit less
than last year, but Victor Kartini and Yiner Diaz aren't
throwing runners out this year because they're stealing the bases
on the pitchers. They've been doing it against all of
(19:17):
the pitchers. They did it again last night against super
duper slow from the mound to the plate, Christian Navier,
who luckily picked somebody off himself. But you're gonna they're
gonna steal fifty bases in a row off of him.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
Yeah, fromber They all give about that, and you know what,
it's not the catcher's fault. No, they're the ones.
Speaker 6 (19:38):
It's like a quarterback who gets the wins and losses
attached to just them.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Right.
Speaker 6 (19:42):
The caught stealing numbers are printed in the game notes.
Everybody sees them all across the league, and they're awful,
but that doesn't tell you the whole story.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
They're not anti catcher numbers. If the delivery two said
catcher puts him behind the eight ball at making a play.
But he did last night and it was great, So
it's huge. Yeah, it was a right, it was a
huge out at the time because it was out number two.
As I recall, I remember tying run is on base.
Right now, it's only a seven to six ball game, No,
I look, it was. It was not. It's not how
(20:12):
you drew it up. But it doesn't matter, you know,
And when you're trying to fend off the suddenly potent
not just cal Rawley's. You can't call them that anymore.
It's the whole lineup. Julio Rodriguez is a functional baseball
player offensively, all of a sudden, When did that happen?
When we know he's still gonna suck defensively, he's gonna
(20:33):
do something dumb. He does it all the time. But
they are in this little groove. Now here's my theory
about that. Since we're on the subject of Seattle and
you know the Astros staving them off, they're peaking too early.
That's my theory. Now, my first theory was that the
home run derby would take care of cal Rawley, that
pesky little problem. Actually there's nothing little about him, but
(20:53):
that's not really panning out. So my next theory that
I'm just gonna throw against the wall and see if
it sticks, is that they're peaking early. Remember what I said,
I think it was last week. Traditionally, during this run
of Astro's excellence, what's been their worst week or their
worst month, I should say, of the season, it's August. Well,
if the Mariners want to get hotter than hot right
now and then fizzle out in September, like we all know,
(21:15):
they're going to that's just fine by me.
Speaker 6 (21:17):
Yeah, there's a little bit more to it, because why
wouldn't they be hot now. They just made their team better.
They just traded for Josh one of those guys. They
just traded Caleb Ferguson. Obviously, what you're about to say,
I believe is they did trade for a Hameo swaz
but he's been awful, and that is actually on a
milk carton. The best team in the American League in
August is the team that's still behind you by one game,
(21:38):
the Seattle Mariners. They've played nine games, they've lost one
of them. They've been one of the best offensive teams,
they've been one of the best pitching teams this month.
And I'm not sure how much it's going to change.
The Astros are still in first. They're still the team
being chased. They're still the team that's not whole and
arguably got a piece bitten out of them their left
shoulder last night with the hater situation. And they're still
(22:01):
in front, and they're still playing the kind of baseball
that says they can remain in front no matter what.
The three other players, Myers, Alvarez and hater's future situations
are and.
Speaker 5 (22:11):
This is gonna be fun.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
This is a real, live race ross fifty games. I'm
saying I like it. I'm just giving you the facts.
Speaker 5 (22:18):
I like when they're up ten games and it's a
no doubter. I like Game one twenty tonight.
Speaker 6 (22:24):
There's forty two games left after tonight, and it's gonna
be a sprint to close out this marathon of a
Major League baseball season.
Speaker 5 (22:31):
Are you going to the game tonight?
Speaker 4 (22:33):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
I don't think so. Well, if you do, let me know.
I'll be there. Okay, I'll let you know.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
I'll try to kit in touch with you if I
can find your number, and I'm just let you get
to you at at some point. Halfway through our number one,
we get you best of X. Halfway through our number
two on a Tuesday, we usually hit you with Joe Espada.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
We will do that again today.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
Halfway through our number three, it's say, what all that
still on the horizon here on the.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
Eighteen Best of X?
Speaker 6 (22:58):
Someone who doesn't like the ass from twenty seventeen, You're
gonna love it.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Did you all see this so we're putting out between
five and fifteen posts a day.
Speaker 5 (23:15):
Four hundred people were arrested for things of day seven.
Speaker 6 (23:17):
On social media, history repeats itself type bang, you'll succeed.
Speaker 5 (23:23):
Never doubt that you're the one to puss no one building.
You're the best of X. Nothing's gonna ever.
Speaker 6 (23:32):
Top you know you're the best of it posting every
single day.
Speaker 5 (23:37):
You know you're the best of X. Breaking the entire Internet. Uh,
if you're not aware.
Speaker 6 (23:49):
At eleven twelve Central Time late last night, twelve twelve
Eastern Time, the words I just used were used ad
nauseum between then and still now. At two thirty four
in the afternoon the next day, Oh my gosh, the
news last night broke the Internet. Yeah yeah, music musician
released a new album. I can't believe it. No way
(24:10):
that happened, but it did.
Speaker 5 (24:11):
Nonetheless, where was Bill Pelichick when I needed him?
Speaker 6 (24:15):
Bill Belichick probably is more of a swiftye than you think.
Considering a company he keeps.
Speaker 5 (24:20):
He'd probably say, yeah, well, that's assuming she likes her.
Speaker 6 (24:23):
That is making a rather rash assumption on my part.
But nonetheless, best of X means something we found on
social media, or as he would say snapface or book
face or any of the social media outlets. Got some
good stuff coming to our way from the legitimate news
outlets with the announcement of the NBA games, all the
players that will be involved. We knew about the Rockets
(24:44):
place in them, but now some other of the you know,
it's it's opening night.
Speaker 5 (24:48):
It's really opening week for the NBA.
Speaker 6 (24:50):
The Rockets are the team that's playing on Opening Night,
but every other team's Opening Night comes over the course
of the remainder of the week. And the NBA, with
all of their partners on the level, now they know
what games those will be at, what networks they'll be on,
the new networks that they're and the Rockets, obviously they
are the team that gets to launch it. From a
television standpoint, the exclusive radio home for Houston Rockets basketball
(25:13):
Sports Talk seven to ninety, who will once again, in
fact have the Rockets opener this season on Tuesday, October
twenty first against the Oklahoma City Thunder and then the
remaining eighty one games plus more than ten postseason games
this upcoming season. But that's just run of the mill
stuff we found early this morning on social media.
Speaker 5 (25:34):
We'll get some more on that.
Speaker 6 (25:35):
Podcasts are very very prevalent, and players, as we've found
out over the last couple of years, are much more
likely in that setting to really say what they think
or give material that is absolute pot stir material. This
is Astros related. The Astros are currently in get this
(25:56):
the Golden era of Astros Baseball. The twenty twenty five Astros,
for as far as we know here on August twelfth,
are still in the Golden Era of Astros Baseball. They're
a division leader, likely going to the playoffs, possibly a
team one of the two teams that gets the five
days off before the postseason begins, and as we know
now because it was just released today, they might need
(26:19):
their calendar open on October twenty fourth and twenty fifth,
and then October twenty seventh and twenty eighth.
Speaker 5 (26:25):
By then, they will have won the four games of
the World.
Speaker 6 (26:27):
Series that are now slated and calendared and be World
Series Champions for a third time. I remember when they
won the World Series for the first time, and so
does ken Lee Jansen.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
Well was Kenley up to this week? Well, aside from
having a dad bod like he always does, man, he's
a reliever he's a pitcher. If I were to tell
you that Kenley Jansen, former Dodgers closer who got smashed
in his gym, was to go on a very anti
Astros flavored podcast, perhaps the most noteworthy one. Oh yeah,
(26:58):
which one is it?
Speaker 6 (26:59):
I was gonna ask you, what do you think which
one is the most anti Astros podcast? That would be
the one run by at John Boy Media? Which one
talking baseball? Talking baseball? A national outlet run by a
New York outfit, Sure is anti Astros? Yes, okay, I'm
just I'm just filling in the blanks, raunching up. It's
(27:19):
run from the Upper East coast of America. What state
New York? What's some of the Mets?
Speaker 7 (27:26):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (27:26):
Huh?
Speaker 5 (27:26):
What Borough? What Borough? Don't Queens or the Mets play
the Bronx there you go? Okay, Yeah, it's in there.
It's a nice place. It's can be sometimes the stadium's nice.
The surrounding areas are not, especially if you take a
train there. You gonna get there, well, that's true. It's
a heck of an uber charge. It's a long train
ride by the way anyway, especially if you're staying in
(27:47):
the nice part of the Island down South. Okay, so
talking baseball.
Speaker 6 (27:52):
They're talking baseball with closer ken Lee Janson currently closing
games for extremely good baseball team in Los Angeles.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
So I'm just gonna play this without any sort of
context so that you can get you can get the
sarcasm basically at the tail end, because if you just
hear it with like an untrained ear, I just want
to see if you cat you pick up on what
we're putting down, so to speak. What is this twenty
seventeen that's a thirty home run Jay flamb right there,
(28:23):
and that.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
Was the cy young type Marianna Rivera killing Jessy.
Speaker 7 (28:28):
That's right.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
Seven team who could have that year was the Ust,
the Nationals, nobody else.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
We all know, No, we know, we all know.
Speaker 6 (28:37):
So that was We're watching the video of a guy
who had thirty homers that year, and he got him
to pop up, you know, he had a he got him.
And they went on to describe, Yeah, that he did
himself say that was my twenty seventeen Mariano Rivera season
out of one thirty two ERA sixty eight plus innings.
Speaker 5 (28:53):
Or as achilles in an old timers game. That was awful.
If you've seen it, that's that's wild. By all accounts,
one of the nicest guys in baseball.
Speaker 6 (29:00):
Astros had a great time hanging out with him before
the game. But yeah, he appeared in sixty five games
that year. He allowed ten runs that year, one thirty
two era, he was a nominal. Yeah, in twenty seventeen
as the Dodgers closer in the regular season.
Speaker 5 (29:17):
And then what happened, and then he just real quick,
he gave up the Marwin Gonzales home run, which by
all accounts, this might be the most important home run
in Astro's.
Speaker 7 (29:33):
History in Zala's kitts won in the year in a
left center field back gets was gone time game in
the ninth Marlin Gonzales.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
The one Dodgers fan booing you can hear him if
he doesn't hit that home run. I don't know that
the Astros win the World Series. They probably do because
they were that good that year, and again that the
Dodgers liked to choke home games in that World Series.
And then ignore that fact.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
He was really awesome that year. In the postseason, he
was gotten by a couple of teams. The Astros was
the one that got him the most. There's a lot
of factors that went into it. Maybe I'll get to
the statistical part of it. It's a little less fun.
Then let's go to the comments. Yeah, that's what we
do here. On Best of X, Jose al Tuve MVP
(30:28):
season responded to the post of Kennley saying the only
team that could beat me in twenty seventeen was the Astros.
We know LMFAO that idiot and dummy just can't stop crying.
I'm dead another one. Nobody needed signs to know Kenley
was going to throw a cutter. He's the same pitch
(30:49):
eighty five percent at the time that year.
Speaker 5 (30:51):
Goofy.
Speaker 6 (30:52):
Some people like in a comment like that to what
people said about Mariano Rivera when he was trying to
close out against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Luis Gonzalez. Yeah,
everybody knew what pitch was coming. But everybody always knew
what pitch was coming. Guess what pitch Billy Wagner's gonna throw.
Speaker 5 (31:07):
Guess what pitch?
Speaker 6 (31:07):
And I know that he has more than one pitch,
but they all know what's coming.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
Guess what pitch. Josh Hater is gonna throw. Raldus Chapman
for Josey al Toove. Thank you Dodgers for letting the
Astros use your system in LA so they could beat Jansen.
That's good stuff right there.
Speaker 6 (31:24):
Cy Young Maldy says, we still walked his bum ass
off last year. Lmao Astros fan from the UK. You
guys probably know him. This guy is so traumatized by
the Astros that he didn't remember Marwin Gonzalez demolished.
Speaker 5 (31:36):
Him in LA.
Speaker 6 (31:37):
Or did the Dodgers kindly let the Astros borrow their
cheating system? The Astros borrow the Dodgers cheating system. Laughable
coping of the highest lowest order.
Speaker 5 (31:48):
That's why rewatching that Cody Bellinger interview was so well laughable.
He just aside from lying out of his buss like
he did in that interview. Oh, the Astros just cheated
for three years straight, That's what he said, like as
if it was just fact. There's no disputing it. He's
got all the information. Do you remember we were talking
(32:09):
to somebody This is probably a week or two after
the scandal broke. You and I were having a conversation
with somebody who shall remain nameless, But they revealed to
us that guys like Cody Bellinger and others around the
league that were chirping were told by Dave Clark to
shut their bumb asses up because basically a lot of
(32:31):
other teams were doing something and it's gonna come out
if you don't, And they did. Did you notice how
everybody shut up real quick all of a sudden one day.
That's when they got the memo from Dave Clark, who
was going around to Major League Baseball clubs and going
into the clubhouses saying, hey, stop a.
Speaker 6 (32:47):
Couple more quick comments when he got lit up at
home right, sounds like a sorry excuse to me. I
remember this, dude, and Morrow throwing absolute meatballs for seven
straight games. There were no bangs in the playoffs. I
remember the very same thing. Well, man, Clayton Kershaw, how
did they get to them?
Speaker 5 (33:02):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (33:03):
Maybe you said, shrup, stop throwing pitches over the heart
of the plate, over and.
Speaker 5 (33:07):
Overtopped over firsha. On the postseason, they had four home
games out of seven that were played, and they lost
two of them. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (33:14):
The angle of the cheating scandal and how it impacts
how you think about the Astros. Did it help them
win games, potentially because they used it during the regular season,
which enhanced their season, enhanced their record, and allowed for
them to reach the postseason in a manner that was
more comfortable. Whatever, however, you yeah that any way you
want to slice that. There's not much of an argument
from me that that is what happened, and as you
(33:37):
played them in the postseason, that's not what happened. Maybe
how they got there happened, but once they are there,
and especially in your ballpark, it had nothing to do
with it.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
They definitely beat you without the assistance of it.
Speaker 6 (33:50):
You can tell me about how they arrived at that point,
how they got to games one, two, six, and seven
in LA. Sure, but inside those games, from first pitch
to last pitch, they just beat you.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
They just outplayed you. That's all there is to it.
That's all there is to it. I know that hurts,
and it doesn't. It doesn't bring it back. And you
still have your one weird fake championship and then another
one after that in the last couple of years. So
you know, godspeed, Dodgers fan. I don't know what to
tell you anymore. Stop crying. You sound like a Yankees fan.
They didn't even have a championship to show for it.
(34:22):
They have a one to one since two thousand and nine,
and their GM winds a whole lot more than yours does.
There you have it, Best of X.
Speaker 6 (34:27):
A couple more pieces of info as it relates to
the next couple of days for the Astros and what
could be in store for the remainder of this series
against Boston and especially over the final three games of
the homestand that come after that.
Speaker 5 (34:39):
That's next on the eight seam.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
The A on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (34:57):
Just talking about world affairs during the break with wex
over here. Don't let me, don't let me hear this again? Please?
Do you not like Rihanna? I mean as bump music.
I don't. I don't need it here. It's a good song,
that's not Rihanna. I thought it was Chain Smokers. Oh,
because she sings the hook on it, right, No Daya
sings a hook on it. Oh, it sounded like Rihanna.
I don't care. At least it's not Taylor Swift.
Speaker 6 (35:20):
The new Music's not out album? How's he supposed to
play it? The music's not out?
Speaker 5 (35:25):
You and Grace need to go away with your Taylor
Swift tweets, well, you're the one that's going to see her.
She'll be at the game. I'm sure you will be.
I'm not going to see her. End of sentence. All right.
Moving on, so last night that was really cool. First
of all, the Alex Bregman video was amazing. Second of all,
(35:46):
he looks like absolute crap in a Red Sox uniform.
Speaker 6 (35:50):
It's all varieties, especially the banana one.
Speaker 5 (35:52):
It's just gross.
Speaker 6 (35:53):
And what you said about the Bregman video, that's one
of the it's it's both painful and play measurable. These
players that keep leaving, Like a James Harden tribute video
is great, but it's not like these No. He because
well not that he's the only guy. What what are
they going to show for? For Carlos Korea, for Alex Bregman,
(36:16):
for Kyle Tucker uh posts postseason?
Speaker 5 (36:20):
After all these un they've all got him.
Speaker 6 (36:22):
Kyle, maybe fewer than the others, Presley said, so many
like three of those four players not to hurt Kyle,
but three of those four guys that have returned for
videos Presley, Tucker, Springer, Bregman over the years, three of
the four not Kyle. They have unbelievable. Here's why we
are celebrating two World Series championships, or at least one.
(36:45):
It's because of what you did this time, in this
time and this time in this time.
Speaker 5 (36:48):
Do you think Kyle noticed that his montage was only
regular season highlights? I mean, he caught the ball, he did,
and he had two home runs in the game they lost.
Speaker 6 (36:56):
And what else is part of a Bregman video or
a Tucker video, or a Presley video or a Springer
video that as a comparison to a Hardened video, they
have it and Hardened can't. There's no parade video, there's
no celebrating with the City video because unfortunately they weren't
able to do that.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
But this group was.
Speaker 6 (37:15):
So when you put together two minutes, five minutes, twenty minutes,
half an hour if you're on social media, they probably
can't play a half hour video for Bregman at the game,
but you don't run out of material.
Speaker 5 (37:25):
Rocket should have put a Scott Foster montage together, cutting
material for the video that has to show in stadium
that you'd love to have in there. Because we got
too much, and you pray you probably needed util August
to put Bregman's together nine years. I mean, he was.
I mean and again the walk off in Game five,
if you thought Marwin Gonzalez's home run was big, like,
(37:47):
that's when I thought, all right, they're gonna win this series.
Because even if you lose the next night on Halloween
in Los Angeles, after I flew there on a charter
to see it live, and you didn't get it done,
justin Verlanders, they have Game seven, they've got another chance, which,
by the way, George Springer almost single handily won that game.
Speaker 6 (38:05):
Yeah, everything about how it was put together, played handled,
respected by Alex and then the fans and everything they did.
And I do think it's pretty normal. You've saluted him,
you've cheered him. It's been awesome. And then the game starts. Well,
Alex Bregman bats on the top of the first inning.
He bats, is the second batter, so nothing, nothing game,
he steps up to the plate, totally warranted to salute him.
Speaker 5 (38:29):
Again, that's what you do. And then after he hits
a bomb, you bow his ass like the enemy he is,
which is exactly what.
Speaker 6 (38:34):
You weren't cheering for him to hit. They didn't cheer
after he hit the homer. No, they cheered because He
appeared at the game two times, once after the video
and once after he left the dugout to or left
the ondeck circle to reach home plate. They didn't cheer
for him during the bat. They didn't cheer for him
as the ball was flying out of the stadium or
while he was rounding the bases.
Speaker 5 (38:53):
Not to be outdone, right, They were fine, yeah, but
not to be outdone. And it wasn't a home run,
but it did get the rally started and they would
take the lead for good, even though things got messy
afterward because of Carlos Correa's base hit that drove in
the first run of the game and his moment. The
probably better part was to hear him talk about it
after the game, but man, he did in the City
(39:15):
connect jerseys are so good and they look really good
on him, which we knew they would, but like it,
just it looked right to see him out there in
those It's gonna look right to see him in the
home Whites tonight or the Orange.
Speaker 6 (39:27):
I don't know ten games you've seen him now, you're ready, right,
he's an astro.
Speaker 5 (39:31):
You're down. It looks normally Yeah to me, this is
the guy of all the guys, and I feel this
way about Bregman two. He comes back like if George
Springer came back. It's not that they would, he wouldn't
be welcomed or anything like that. It's just he was
the first one to I don't want to say jump ships,
so to speak, but the oldest one. Well he was.
But that's that's part of the reason he left too.
(39:53):
But the whole season surrounding him leaving it felt like
a formality and a foregone conclusion because of personal reasons.
I don't like how they dealt with my contract situation
and arbitration and all that, and whether whether it's true
or not, that was the narrative.
Speaker 6 (40:09):
It's fine to have a narrative, and what you said,
those are facts.
Speaker 5 (40:12):
Carlos always foul.
Speaker 6 (40:13):
They didn't offer him one hundred and forty five million
dollars just to be outdone by Toronto's one fifty. They
didn't offer him anywhere. They didn't offer him anything. They
offered Carlos a what some people were calling a low
ball offer, but they were negotiating with him in good
faith until the season began and they said no, Well,
I don't think anything happened with George. They weren't trying
(40:33):
to bring him back. They weren't negotiating a way to
find out a whole. They look at a great contract
with Toronto, and he's less smart because he has not
been the same player since leaving. He's just now that player.
Speaker 7 (40:43):
This year.
Speaker 6 (40:43):
He had a couple of really good seasons at the
Onset and then a couple of less good seasons, and
this year.
Speaker 5 (40:48):
Has been very good again, and they had another parade.
They did fine.
Speaker 6 (40:52):
Well, now they're looking up at George. George plays for
the best team in the American League for now.
Speaker 5 (40:57):
But yeah, I just I thought that everything was about
last night was fantastic, and then Carlos Korea saying, yeah,
I was gonna cry, and then I was like, I
probably shouldn't do that. I'm paraphrasing. We'll get to all
of that and a whole lot more as we continue
with our number two next and we'll start the simulcast
over on Space City Home Network.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
Tune lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam talking your Team.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
It is the A Team.
Speaker 5 (41:38):
It's Sports Talk seven ninety it's Space City Home Network
as a simulcast has begun. Wex over there ac right here.
Cole Thompson is our producers. We get into our number two.
A lot of discussion about your Houston Astros coming off
of last night's festivities, both good and bad, although it's
not really festivities when you find out your closer you're
(41:58):
highly compensated, has what the team is referring to as
shoulder discomfort. And in a season in which the Astros
have been dealt by far the biggest injury blow of
any team in the majors, I don't even think that's like,
that's not disputable. I know a lot of teams are
going through The Dodgers have had a lot of injuries.
Speaker 6 (42:18):
But nobody from a magnitude standpoint, too many frontline players.
The mass numbers the Astros have had is unmatched.
Speaker 5 (42:25):
It's ridiculous, and they have still compiled a sixty seven
win first placed season so far. Following last night's seven
to six nail bider that was seven to two at
one point, and then the Astros bullpen, which again is
one of the best in baseball, just served up some meatballs.
(42:46):
And they're always do we really need to two run homers?
Did we really need that?
Speaker 6 (42:50):
Well, yesterday we had a caller who ended up not
getting in, asking do you still believe in Bennett Sussa,
And I know the same thing is thought about Brian King,
And the same thing is thought about Steven Okert. King
gave it up a couple of days ago. O Kurt
gave up a two run homer in yesterday's game when
he tried. Of course, he didn't know why the game
because the answer in all three of their cases is yes, yes,
and yes. I mean, you've been here all year, right,
(43:12):
it's okay as a reliever to not be perfect. They're
not going to be perfect. They all give up runs.
There's not a reliever in baseball who's been on the
roster all season long, who's appeared in a reasonable number
of games that's not giving up runs. It's not give
him up hits, that's not giving up leads, that doesn't
have blown saves. They all do it, even the best ones.
Josh Hater's done it. I know he has a track record.
(43:33):
So nobody's asking do you still believe in him? And
each of those other three guys does not. But when
you say, or when you ask like, is there some
alternative you're looking to. I don't want the Astros trying
to find a solution to a non existent problem. If
Brian King or Bennett Susso or Steven Okert pitches in
an enormous game in late September and doesn't pitch well,
(43:55):
or pitches in an more enormous game in the postseason
and doesn't pitch well, that's baseball that happens. Did you
really think they that that's they have a better option.
Obviously Dana Brown was looking for a little more balance
in the bullpen, and maybe you would have found a
pitcher who you could have trusted a little bit more
than them. But I've watched him pitch since they've been Astros,
(44:15):
King from before this year, and obviously Susa and Okurt
this year only, even though Susa was an Astro two
years ago. I think a season off from injury. I'll
look at this year. The guys, they throw strikes, they
don't walk a lot of hitters. They got a ton
of swing and miss. They get right handed and left
handed hitters out. We'll find out more when they pitch
in the bigger presser situations. But I don't have any issue,
(44:36):
and I don't have any thought that, man, they're in
trouble when they have to turn things over to Susa,
O Kurt King, a bray you and hopefully hater. I
don't think that at all. I think the game's over.
Speaker 5 (44:49):
Mmmm what if like yesterday, right, what if they're playing
Seattle and it's a bray you, Then the game is
over and the Astros lost. He's had wonders with them.
Speaker 6 (44:59):
He's also and back on the bump against them and
has has a little bit more success.
Speaker 5 (45:04):
And I really like what he did the other day.
Speaker 6 (45:05):
I thought it was a I would not have taken
Susa out in that game against the Yankees the other day,
and I would have left him in, even though he
clearly was not enjoying early inning success and he put
them in a really bad spot. But I don't think
a Brady throws strikes to his initial hitter pretty much ever.
And the bases were already loaded, and so I was
(45:26):
really worried that that's how the inning was going to continue.
He ended up getting five straight outs and the only
run that scored was on that very very shallow fly
ball to Taylor Tremmel thatjas Chisholm just said, what we
don't have any runs today, I'm gonna run home and
see what happens here. And Tremmell wasn't in an ideal
position to throw home and bounced at home and he
was easily safe.
Speaker 7 (45:44):
That was it.
Speaker 6 (45:45):
A Brea was fantastic and it's just an an incident
or an instant. Let's see, it's an instant where the
manager pulled the right string and he did. He went
to a Brew needing probably five outs from him. They
got him and they won.
Speaker 5 (46:00):
And that was again going back to the lead that
was never relinquished, although it was in peril, in doubt,
if you will, all because of a rally that began
with the best trade deadline acquisition so far. It's not
a Uhaneo Suarez, and it's not even Josh Naylor. It's
(46:20):
Carlos Korea. I know that the Seattle Mariners have been
playing better percentage wise baseball, but Josh Naylor didn't do
anything the first couple of games for them during this
stretch before he started doing things Carlo. The reason I'm
saying that is because Carlos Korea. I don't think he
even o for his first five it has been absolutely
scorching since better than Josh Naylor.
Speaker 6 (46:43):
I mean, I don't know that it's worth debating.
Speaker 5 (46:46):
I think it is. And here's why, fat Josh Naylor
not as likable as Carlos Korea. You saw it last night.
Speaker 6 (46:52):
You didn't add that to the conversation. I don't know
that it's about likability.
Speaker 5 (46:56):
Well, he has more stolen bases, so i'll give him
that than Carlos Carey. But I think overall, and it's not. Look,
a lot of times the clubhouse demeanor or the swagger,
or the attitude or the unspoken leadership, whatever you want
to call it, however you want to describe it is
(47:17):
seemingly overrated, or maybe people think it's overblown. Look, I'm
telling you right now Carlos Correa walking into that clubhouse
and basically taking it over already, because I have no
doubt my mind that has happened.
Speaker 6 (47:32):
It's visible. If you have noticed. During some of the
Space City Home Network broadcasts, you'll catch him, you know,
after he's been retired and he's headed back to the dugout,
after he's just scored a run, after he's homeward, because
that means he's obviously coming back to the dugout. He
is often having conversations with the upcoming hitters. He is
often giving him a little intel on what he thinks
(47:52):
will help them when they step to the plate. Which
is what he did when he was here before. It's
what he did when he was Minnesota. It's what Alex
Bregman has done many times over, what many players in
this clubhouse have done four years for each other.
Speaker 5 (48:03):
And that also is done before.
Speaker 6 (48:05):
Games and now end games. I totally agree. I do
think this is as it was when he left. When
he left, it was his clubhouse. He has now returned
three years later, it is once again his clubhouse. Here's
a tuve has remained throughout right, and it's.
Speaker 5 (48:20):
He is a He's the silent, quiet type, speak softly,
carry a big stick.
Speaker 6 (48:25):
Hey Carlos, we probably need a speech today.
Speaker 4 (48:27):
You up for it.
Speaker 5 (48:28):
I'm probably just so I'll defer to you. Yeah, I'll
this might be hot takey, but I do think it's
the case. And again it's a very small sample size.
But is it possible for what I just talked about
to happen and it rub off on not a younger
player like a Cam Smith like we thought it would
and will and probably still will in the future. Is
(48:50):
it possible that Carlos Correa arriving in Houston can and
has helped Christian Walker.
Speaker 6 (48:58):
I think Christian Walker started to do better things at
the plate. Not exclusively, but you can definitely look at
his numbers in July. They're not as good as they've
been in August. August he's been even better. But his
July numbers were so dramatically different than the first three
months of his Astros career.
Speaker 5 (49:14):
Obviously, Carlos wasn't here yet. He was brutal the first
few months.
Speaker 6 (49:17):
He y had a six seventy oh ps was his
best month. The other two months were in the low
six hundreds, and then he popped it over eight hundred
last month. He's over nine hundred this month. He's driving
the ball much more often. He still has an insane
amount of swing and miss that really hasn't changed, but
he is and he's also delivering.
Speaker 5 (49:34):
He's come up in a lot of situations.
Speaker 6 (49:36):
Yeah, yeah, and that's what's gonna happen when you've re
earned the trust of your lineup filling out manager. He's
where where'd he driving those two runs from last night?
The cleanup spot. Well, he's a different hitter now, so
batting and there is less of an issue. It's not
because he's more likely to come through.
Speaker 5 (49:54):
Yeah, I just think that you've got you had a
it was not Carlos Korea wasn't your only deadline acquisition.
But he's just by far the one that I think
means the most off the field as opposed to I mean,
every guy has had his moment since getting here. Sanchez
has had his moment, Urius last night had his moment,
(50:17):
but Correa has been the like consistent for the most
parts to even though they're I think they're what five
and five since they made the deal. Yeah, So, I
mean it's not they're not winning every game like Josh
Saylor's team.
Speaker 6 (50:29):
They lost the first three. Yeah, so they've won five
out of seven. Yeah, they're in the process of paying
back that team win.
Speaker 5 (50:37):
Did that today? They win today. That's three straight series victories. Yeah. Yeah,
and it's not again, I know that Seattle refuses to
lose any games lately, but if you keep winning series,
I'm with what you said yesterday, They're gonna win the division,
even if it's by a hair of their chinny chin
chin they will still win this division. So yeah, we'll
see what is in store.
Speaker 6 (50:57):
From a lineup perspective, facing a right handed pitcher, I
would imagine that haes Wus Sanchez is back in the
lineup today. It's been a doubles machine. I did not
expect him to be the last of the three trade
acquisitions to Homer, but that is now what will happen,
presuming he hits one. With the Ureus hitting his first yesterday,
Correa already has two. But that's what they've all brought,
all three of those players. It's what I've been lamenting
(51:19):
for such a long period of time, extra base power
driving the baseball, and that's not really what arius is
from a career standpoint. You know, four of Korea's sixteen
hits are for extra bases. That's nothing fantastic. Five of
Sanchez's nine hits are doubles extra base hits, and Ureas
now three of his six half of them are extra
(51:40):
base hits.
Speaker 5 (51:42):
Innings.
Speaker 6 (51:42):
You have extra base hits in our innings you score
in usually they've scored more runs, they've got a better slug,
they've got a better ops. They would be even worse
than five and five without that and again it clearly
at length is your lineup. You faced a couple of lefties,
and maybe there's a little bit of a sign of
life from Chas McCormick.
Speaker 5 (52:02):
Also, he hadn't hit so much better for a year
since that home run that was like pain you last year.
Speaker 6 (52:07):
Yeah, he said, it felt pretty good to hit the
first one, even though it's August his words.
Speaker 5 (52:12):
Wait, it was August fifth last year. I think, I
think they said on the broadcast the television side, the.
Speaker 6 (52:17):
Amount of playing time he's had between then and now
is still minimal. But he hadn't hit the ball well.
He hadn't hit well period in that timeframe. He played
very good outfield defense again, and the Astros are as
as stacked as any team in baseball, probably more so
in what they can trot out as a center fielder
defensively chasing down baseballs. Jake Myers is the best in
(52:39):
baseball at chasing down baseballs in centerfield. In my opinion,
Chas McCormick, Mauricio Dubon are very competent replacements and they
play well above replacement level, and Elier Taylor, even Taylor
Trommel as a centerfielder is plus. They need to play
great defense with the team they have put together. About
twenty minutes, we'll hear from Joe Aspada on Josh had
(53:00):
other things and one of the two of us really
really enjoyed this story out of a from one very
prominent Los Angeles Dodger.
Speaker 5 (53:10):
What could that be? Who could it be? And which
one of us is it? Next?
Speaker 2 (53:15):
The age on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (53:22):
Back at you here on the eighteen XAC and Clinton
In just moments ago, some information from the Astros released
and it is as expected and from my seat and
unfortunate as it is, fifteen days without Josh Hater at
the very least, is what the Astros are headed into.
Speaker 5 (53:37):
Retro to yesterday.
Speaker 6 (53:40):
Josh Hater's left shoulder strain has landed him on the
fifteen day IL don't know if it'll be longer. Don't
know more than that. Joe Spotta will meet with the
media in a little under an hour and hopefully we'll
know a little bit more about it. But they're calling
it a left shoulder strain. Has expected. Sean Dubin is
healthy enough to join the astrosh pitching staff and he's
(54:01):
been reinstated from the fifteen day il as predicted. Sadly,
Hector Nearris was designated for assignment. Colton Gordon because of injury,
can immediately be recalled from Triple A, and that has happened.
So two players out of the Astros pitching staff Josh
Hater and Hector Narris, two pitchers in Sean.
Speaker 5 (54:24):
Duban and Colton Gordon.
Speaker 6 (54:26):
Astros lineup tonight will of course feature Hey Sus Sanchez
back in the lineup, facing a right handed pitcher and
into the cleanup spot. Jeremy Payne your Carlos care Jose Altuve,
as has been the case now a couple of times one, two, three,
Altuve again does not need his glove. He continues to
be the designated hitter. Sanchez has mentioned he is in
(54:48):
right field tonight. Cam Smith not in the lineup tonight.
Christian Walker over at first, johanner Diez is gonna catch
Spencer Aarraghetti. Taylor Tremmelsen left Urreus off of his three
hit game yesterday. He is at second base and in
his first appearance since being recalled by the Astros. Jacob
Melton is your center fielder tonight, batting ninth.
Speaker 5 (55:09):
Urius low Key Player of the Game, from last night.
Speaker 6 (55:12):
I mean three for four considering how important runs six
and seven turned out at Yes, that was pretty important.
Speaker 5 (55:19):
By the way, I did not know this, and this
is this is the most twenty twenty five Astros thing ever.
Chandler Rome just tweeting this. This is Josh Haterer's first
trip to the injured list in his nine year major
league career.
Speaker 6 (55:33):
Yep, very very healthy in his time here in the minors,
very healthy in his time in Milwaukee and briefly in
San Diego, and for two years being used very very
differently two inning stints normal here in Houston for his
almost two years here. And this is the first time,
and I'm sure it's a little bit alarming for him also,
(55:54):
and that he hadn't been in this situation before we
mentioned the timing of it. You will have forty two
games baseball after tonight. Who's not available for tonight's game,
wasn't available for last night's game, And how many games
in the future will he be available for. You have
someone who's closed games before, in Brian Abraw, I would
assume that is the immediate push and just slid everybody
(56:14):
back another inning. Sean Dubin hopefully pitches just as he
was when he went on the il himself. If that's
the case, you've added one more arm into the bullpen,
even though you've lost one arm. But it is a
different job, and there's a reason why you go out
and get a closer like this, even when Brian Abrady's
been here throughout. Abra has been setting up for two
different people over the last couple of years, Presley initially
(56:37):
and obviously Hater over the last two years, and he's
been probably the best, one of the best non closers
in Major League Baseball for three seasons. At least over
the next minimum fifteen days, he'll be asked to close
games should the Astros present him with any opportunities.
Speaker 5 (56:55):
Let's just say this is a run of the mill's
shoulder strain for a pitcher. What's the usual recovery time.
I know it's all different for you, no matter what.
It's a total guess. I don't know anything about it.
You know, like if you have an ankle sprain for
an NBA a high ankle sprain fro him an NBA player,
you know they're going to be out for a prolonged
period of time because it's a high ankle sprain. I'm
(57:16):
just curious if there was.
Speaker 7 (57:17):
Well.
Speaker 6 (57:17):
I mean he's I know, his torso and his torque
that he can create, and his legs and his chest
and his mid section are all part of pitching. But
I don't think not. I mean, his left shoulder hurts,
he throws with his left hand. It's it's not like
an ankle injury to me. You can play through it,
you can figure out a way you can compensate, you
(57:39):
can maybe even take a shot.
Speaker 5 (57:41):
There's things you can do.
Speaker 6 (57:42):
I don't think there's much of a until he's healthy.
He's not playing, and he's also not throwing on the side,
and he's also not staying up. When he said shoulder,
just come for last night, this was obvious. He's going
on the IL.
Speaker 5 (57:56):
See you in late September, Josh, I mean it could
be late September. If the really like the fifteenth.
Speaker 6 (58:01):
You have three options when players go on the IL,
and you really have two initially, position players go on
the ten day IL pretty much regardless of what the
injury is, because you only put them on the sixty
day when you need the roster spot, when you need
to clear a forty man spot, and then for pictures
it's fifteen days. It's not related to the injury, so
to speak. He could be back in fifteen days because
he's eligible, but they're not putting him on the fifteen
(58:24):
day IL because they think he's only going to need
fifteen days to return.
Speaker 5 (58:28):
It's just like positionally.
Speaker 6 (58:29):
It's not jord On Alvarez spent forty some odd days
on the ten day IL, Spencer Raghetti spent fifty some
odd days on the fifteen day IL. It's not related
to it necessarily. So this is just procedural in nature,
and like I said, hopefully they'll be a little bit
more information on what they think is the recovery. This
is a different injury but may be treated similarly, and
(58:49):
you may have a similar path back to the mound
that Brandan Walter has. Brandon Walter has, it's an elbow strain.
It's it is really discover it's it's inflammation in his case,
I should say, for a more accurate term. And when
it subsides and when he's able to make twenty pitch
side session and thirty five pitch side session, then you
feel like you're moving past it. A little bit different
(59:10):
for hater'll just be at some point, I'm sure in
his name will now be found in the weekly injury
update for the Astros and he'll be on a throwing
progression at some point, maybe ten, twelve, fifteen days from now.
Total guests he's unavailable to the Astros. He's definitely had
one of the best seasons Seattle's closer Anthony Munoz, the
(59:31):
Red Sox closer a old As Chapman, and Hater I
think widely would be regarded as the three closers that
have had the best seasons in the American League to date.
Speaker 5 (59:41):
And now you're without him. Yeah, it's just fantastic news.
I can't you think I would say that this has
got to be the most hellacious, slash stressful from standpoint
of being a GM in Dana Brown's career. But he's
been a GM for like five minutes, so there's no
there's there's nothing to compare this to. And I don't
(01:00:02):
know that he'll have another season like this in the
remainder of his tenure with the Astros, however long that
ends up being. Because it's just been ridiculous. Its obnoxious
borderline at this point, with how many injuries they're dealing
with and it's not just injuries, it's key injuries, it's
long term injuries. And yet there they are a first
place team.
Speaker 6 (01:00:21):
You and I were talking the player having the best season,
the player who was their best player going into the season,
and one of the best closers who was having his
best season here one of the best season. Those are
the three players that have all but three of the
players that have been hurt. Paying his time was brief,
but he still missed time. Albarez is time not brief.
(01:00:43):
Tonight will be game number eighty seven that Jordan Alvarez
has missed, and now Josh Hater is missing an undetermined
amount of time. These are pretty important members of your
twenty six.
Speaker 5 (01:00:55):
Alex Bregman's going to leave in free agency and Kyle
Tucker is going to be traded, and you're not going
to have you ord On Alvarez for a one hundred games.
You think you're gonna be in first place? If I
asked you that question in March, you're like, you're an idiot,
crazy Golden There is over, dude, It's totally over, and
you're over too. Life is over.
Speaker 6 (01:01:11):
Odds are pretty good that Carlos Correa will have more
homers as an astro this year than you'red on Alvarez.
Speaker 5 (01:01:17):
Why'd you have to say that?
Speaker 6 (01:01:18):
And yet they both could homer in the postseason.
Speaker 5 (01:01:23):
Maybe they'll go back to back. Think karre is hitting
in the five hole, I guess that'd be Walker well
higher up.
Speaker 6 (01:01:29):
So you want Sanchez getting extra I mean, I know
where he's hit recently, and I don't know if that changes,
but my gosh, you don't want to keep Korea and
Alvarez from getting additional at bats. Paanya pinional to somewhere
ahead of Alvarez and Korea. Is Sanchez also doing that?
He'd be a three hole hitter, But that means you're
(01:01:50):
only batting Korea fifth.
Speaker 5 (01:01:52):
So you're wanting to put Karrea in the three hole.
Speaker 6 (01:01:54):
Well, if karre is going to hit like this, you
better believe I want to hit it. Hit him up there.
Speaker 5 (01:01:57):
Actually, if he's going to hit like this, I put
him in the cleanup spot.
Speaker 6 (01:02:00):
Uh When and if those problems come up for Joe Aspota,
that would be great. He doesn't have to worry about
it right now because all of those players aren't currently healthy.
Speaker 5 (01:02:07):
You don't need Josh Hater's dominance as much if you're
up by ten runs.
Speaker 6 (01:02:11):
Yeah, Spencergetti needs a little bit more of what Christian
Javier had last night.
Speaker 5 (01:02:16):
Get after hitters attack them. Yep, control all that good stuff,
all right. I will say this, sho, hey Otani. If
he's not what's the word I'm looking for, if he's
not a scoundrel somewhat, then he's at least it's there's
(01:02:40):
just too much smoke here with this guy. Let's put
it that way. And this latest story, which I think
we will push to the next segment because well there's
not enough time to really get into it. But I
just this story is like the latest example of man,
this guy just cannot maybe get out of his own way,
at least as it pertains to his circle, his inner circle.
(01:03:04):
You know, if he's if he's not this bad dude,
then he has very bad judgment of character at the
very very minimum. I would say that would be fair
to say, yeah, sure, blame the other people. Well, I
you know, it is his inner circle. So at the
end of the day, he does have to take that responsibility.
I guess for all this kind of stuff, well, these
are not like little small things that he's being accused
(01:03:27):
of now back to back in the latest story, so
we'll get to that. We will also get to Joe
Espada as the Astros continue to just take on this onslaught,
this wave of injuries that have hit them here in
twenty twenty five and still finding a way to be
a first place team. We'll get to all that as
(01:03:47):
we continue here during the three o'clock hour on a
Tuesday edition of the.
Speaker 2 (01:03:50):
Program The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:04:03):
It is the A Team.
Speaker 5 (01:04:04):
It's Sports Talk seven to ninety and Space City home Network.
WEX and AC with you on a Tuesday edition of
the program. Before we get into that show, Heyo Tani story,
Let's catch up with the Astros skipper Joe Espada talking
about last night's festivities, and he did use the F
word to describe everything that went down last night. He
(01:04:25):
was talking about fun. Of course, I don't know if
fun is how everybody would characterize it, considering the Astros
had a seven to two lead and had to hold
on for a seven to six victory in a very
tight division race. But you'll take any win how you
can get him these days, and that's what he will
begin discussing here on this little snippet from his visit
here on the station earlier today.
Speaker 4 (01:04:45):
You know it's for me, I was talking, you know,
I know for you know, as a fan, as as
a manager, you want things to go smoothly and you
want you guys to all be up and available, but
that's not the reality of these games. And when I said,
fun is more personal the fact that you know, I
I think about my career, my journey, and be in
(01:05:07):
a position to manage a team and in an organization
that'd be so successful and being in that spot you
dream about I dream about those moments, right, That's what
the leader you want to lead players into put him
in a position for them to have success. They had
to get big outs like suicide the last out in
(01:05:28):
the ninth inning. You know that's exciting because I know
how hard he's worked for that. Del Santos getting an
opportunity to get big out for us. He's been bouncing
around all year, Oker or you know that. That's exciting
for me and he's fun to watch my players step
up and and and and have big moments in their careers.
Speaker 8 (01:05:49):
Christian Javier got the start for you. What did you
see from him out there? Of course, settling in after
that two run shot from Brugman and just conversations with
him after about how he's feeling good.
Speaker 4 (01:05:58):
I was, you know, again another player who has work,
he's way back. I thought he stuff was really good.
Aside from that two run home run, I thought he's stuff.
You know, we saw his fastball to ninety four ninety five.
He had the hop that we we know when Javier
is healthy that that's the movement that were looking on
his fastball. He's breaking ball through some good one his
(01:06:20):
change it was okay, like we're going to work through
those things. But he looked healthy. He looked like he
came ready to compete and moving forward. I felt really good.
Aware have you a he's out right now?
Speaker 9 (01:06:34):
So these guys go through these rehab appearances down in
the minor leagues and they don't necessarily go deep into
games three and two thirds, maybe four, maybe seventy pitches.
So when you sent Christian Javier out there, you don't
know what expects, how much to expect from him, or
did you guys kind of have a game plan to say, hey,
I'm gonna watch you through the first fifteen and we
can try to get you to seventy five.
Speaker 5 (01:06:55):
Take us through what that is like.
Speaker 9 (01:06:57):
Taking a guy that hasn't seen major league competition and
then asking him to go beyond what you expect.
Speaker 5 (01:07:02):
From a starter when it comes to number of pitches thrown.
Speaker 4 (01:07:05):
No, you're right, And another thing is, like you mentioned earlier, earlier,
it felt like LCS game. That's also another thing that
you had to take in consideration. There was a lot
of stuff going on in our ballpark yesterday, the energy,
the career coming back, the breakman there, the you know
you're as havevier as an individual getting back on the
mound after missing the whole entire season. All those emotions
(01:07:28):
play into your performance. So you know, he's pitching into
play the lights as they're not as bright as in
the major league game. We're in a pennant race. I'm
looking closely to see how he react and how he
acts from you know, doing that not only the pitch count,
but I'm also looking at his effort, how he's breathing
in between innings, my conversations within, how you feel, how
(01:07:48):
he's handling the hole. There's a lot of stuff that
goes on that goes into my evaluation of his performance
on that day.
Speaker 9 (01:07:58):
You're about to hit a slippery slope because you've got
forty or so games left, give or take, and then
you've got a one game lead, you've got just a
few days off, you've got some stretches of games coming up.
We'll play ten in a row or thirteen in a row,
something like that, and you're customed to that. How do
you feel like you're going to balance off time with Damn,
we need to win this game coming up, and I
(01:08:18):
need my full line up in there as often as possible.
Speaker 4 (01:08:20):
Yeah, and you know, I think I think I will
use my DA to keep those guys off their feet
some also, well, I start I will start asking these
guys to show up to the ballparks a little bit
later and trying to make sure that we sleep in,
we recover and do all that kind of stuff. You know,
we do have forty games left. We do have some
guys that are getting closed coming back. So that's also
going to help get some of these guys a breather.
(01:08:43):
And but it's you know, that's another thing I need
to watch closely. We if we're going to be in
a position to make that push you at the end,
we need these guys to be in a good spot physically.
Speaker 8 (01:08:53):
Spencer, Eric Getty throwing for you again, how do you
assess where he is now and what he needs.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
To do tonight?
Speaker 8 (01:09:02):
Little bit of bad luck in his last start. He
also did get the sixteen whists, but the four in
field hits, but also did get hit hard.
Speaker 4 (01:09:08):
Yeah, and you know, and I think I think, you know,
I expect him to be much better today. I you know,
you know, commanding his pitcher getting to the lanes that
he needs to get to to get some swinging misses,
to get some quicker out. This is the line is
the rest up the lineup. You have to pitch ahead
in the account. You can't fall.
Speaker 5 (01:09:23):
Behind these guys.
Speaker 4 (01:09:24):
They go grind the bats that put the ball in play.
They hate balls hard. You know that. I expect them
just to have a couple of lefties.
Speaker 2 (01:09:31):
In there today.
Speaker 4 (01:09:31):
So you got to be on top of your game.
You got to have confidence on your pitches, on your
game planning and being able to throw your pitches in
different counts for strikes and expand when you have to.
You know, I see the Spencer throw the ball really
well against these guys last year in Fenway. I remember
that start and I know he cannot. I know he
can go back there and do it again.
Speaker 5 (01:09:53):
Spencer Arrighetti, Uh, not surprising that his manager would be
bullish on him, but that's gonna be ag I'm just.
Speaker 6 (01:10:00):
Glad we got Colton Gordon back on the team because
I know we're gonna need him probably early. What's your
next question? You didn't think he was gonna go that route?
Speaker 5 (01:10:07):
That's mean.
Speaker 6 (01:10:09):
I just seven innings, two hits, thirteen strikeouts against the
Red Sox last August.
Speaker 5 (01:10:17):
That's what irag get. He did that.
Speaker 6 (01:10:19):
Joe Spotted just referenced that was pressure. It was one
of his best outings.
Speaker 5 (01:10:24):
Is that in Boston too? That was at Fenway.
Speaker 6 (01:10:26):
He obviously had the very good game not long after
against Baltimore and then an even better game against Philadelphia.
Was during that month of his season where he looked
every bit the major league prospect that he was. I
don't really think there's much of an issue with his stuff,
even in start two. I think the issue is does
he know where it's going? Does he have the execution down?
How confident is he on any given day Today's could
(01:10:47):
be totally different than six days ago, that he can
get these pitches over that he can hit the location
that he wants and this is a pretty good offense,
a pretty aggressive hitting team. It's a step, definitely challenging,
but this is what the this is what the Astros
are left with with. I think Dana I called it
risky to not go out and get pitching, whether it
(01:11:09):
was bullpen arms or starting pitching. I did say it
was a mistake. I said it was risky. And this
is what the ultimate other side of it is. Well,
you got to go with who you have in the system.
They had six pitchers, starting pitchers unhealthy and Sean Dubin.
They had seven pitchers at the deadline on their il,
all of whom they expected to pitch for the Astros
(01:11:30):
in twenty twenty five. At some point over the final
two months, Dubin is back. Unfortunately, your closer is now
hurt and there's really no recourse for that. But you
have to count on these guys. They don't have an alternative.
Blue Bell can make a start here or there, it
can end up back with the team, but he's no
different than them. You're counting on pitchers who are guesses
and arraghetti like yesterday with Javier is a guest.
Speaker 5 (01:11:53):
See all of this too, is why I feel like
Joe Spottis should get Manager of the Year. I realize
that criteria is very subjective, especially in Major League Baseball,
especially an award like this. It's not as simple as oh,
he had the lowest era and he had the best record,
and he had you know, all this kind of stuff.
(01:12:14):
There's a lot that's going to go into I think
this year's edition of this award, and uh, he'll probably
get shafted because that's what happens to the Astros a
lot of times. But he's got as good a case
as any. And this is a big reason why. All right,
why show Heotani is a bad guy? Okay, maybe not,
but we'll tell you his latest unmentionable situation when we
(01:12:36):
come back.
Speaker 2 (01:12:38):
The at on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:12:45):
All Right, so we can all agree that shoe Heyo
Tani is probably a dirty, rotten gambling fiend. Right, is
that too too extreme? Pudding words mouth mouth? All right,
h let's just say for the sake of argument, that
whole thing and how it went down with it was
it as personal assistant or as translator?
Speaker 6 (01:13:05):
I can always forget this part. Well, he had a
little bit both, right, he was kind of both. It
was his friend, but he was his interpreter, and he
he was his This is a new country for him.
Every friend, he was his everything. Except for that, he
didn't act like a friend. He's married to somebody else
and she's a woman. But he was his everything except
for that.
Speaker 5 (01:13:21):
His everything, all right. So, man, I want to I'm hungry.
What should we do?
Speaker 6 (01:13:26):
Whatever you want to do, I'll do it for you.
I'll go get it, I'll order it, I'll pick it up.
What else do you want to do? I probably need
some furniture, all right, I'll make it happen. I'll go
get it. I'll talk to the people that we need it,
because I you know I can handle that for you.
Speaker 5 (01:13:37):
I'll do it. You want some coffee, I can get
that too.
Speaker 6 (01:13:39):
You want to not talk to anybody in English for three,
four or five years, I'll handle that for you.
Speaker 5 (01:13:43):
I'm your guy.
Speaker 6 (01:13:44):
And also, I'm going to take a few million off
the top. I'd feel like you owed me fourteen million worth.
A bit of gambling issue. I mean I've mentioned that, man.
Speaker 5 (01:13:53):
Okay, So now the latest surrounding the greatest player ever
in the history of baseball show. Heyo Tana, a Hawaii
real estate investor and broker, are suing him, claiming he
and his agent got them fired from a two hundred
and forty million dollar luxury housing development on the Big
(01:14:18):
Islands coveted Hapuna Coast that they brought him in to endorse.
Just that first paragraph alone is so exotic in nature,
and I'm not talking about the location. It's just amazing
to me that you know, there's people you know in
your life, your day to day or maybe in your
(01:14:38):
family or something. Well, you're just like, man, how does
this person always find himself or herself in these situations?
At the very least? Don't you ask yourself that question?
Now that the story has come out about Hoshoho Tani,
there's no disputing he's the best all around player in
Major League Baseball and probably something that we have never seen.
But well, it's definitely something we haven't seen before because
(01:14:59):
no nobody does what he does offensively and pitches as
dominantly when he does those things briefly, right, But man,
for all that's good about him, and he seems like he's,
you know, got it as far as you know fan relations.
He's good, good guy, good ambassador for the game from
the standpoint of doing things the right. But he keeps
(01:15:19):
finding himself himself in these situations and it could be
as simple as just bad judge of character who you
surround yourself with. But man, they really like there's no
small little stories with him.
Speaker 6 (01:15:33):
Well, because you're talking about the magnitude of the money involved, right,
He's not trying to, you know, help blow up a
real estate deal that could have netted him and the
other people who was working with several hundred thousand dollars
two point one million. This is a deal that is
in the two hundred millions. And his work for you know,
(01:15:55):
being a part of this deal something they brought him
in several years ago to basically be the face of
this development and have a place at this development and
run clinics baseball clinics at this development.
Speaker 5 (01:16:07):
He was a big part of it.
Speaker 6 (01:16:08):
And the essentially they're saying he and his agent pushed
out the people that did all the work, who worked
all together.
Speaker 5 (01:16:15):
After they were brought in solely for basically his name,
his likeness, whatever, his his celebrity, his promotion orcer branding value. Right,
But that was solely according to this lawsuit the only
reason that Otani and his agent were brought in, and
then they exploited their celebrity leverage to destabilize and ultimately
(01:16:38):
dismantle their strong words the plaintiffs role in the project
for no reason other than their own financial self interest.
These houses average over seventeen million apiece. That's how you
get the two hundred and forty million number. This is again,
he goes big or he goes home. When he goes
When it comes to these types of situation involving money,
(01:17:01):
there is no whether it's his translator slash assistant, you know,
gambling with fourteen million of his own money, unbeknownst to.
Speaker 6 (01:17:09):
Him, fourteen million of his own money, fourteen million, as
he is in line to collect.
Speaker 5 (01:17:16):
Current seven hundred.
Speaker 6 (01:17:17):
Well, he was getting paid by the Angels before this, Right,
he's a total career earning agent. He's pushing to the
billion number, and it's it's not I don't think. I
don't know if this is the last contract he'll ever sign.
I think with his age it probably is, but I
don't know that for sure. Plus, his endorsement value as
evidenced by this particular deal, he has a couple of
Mainland endorsements. He's he has so much money, and we're
(01:17:42):
talking this deal is massive. A two hundred and forty
million dollars real estate deal is pretty large. Having your
gambling addict friend translator steal fifteen to twenty million from.
Speaker 5 (01:17:56):
Twenty dollars bill is not basically nowhere near.
Speaker 6 (01:18:00):
Maybe it was foul, but the difference is one has
nothing to do with Major League Baseball, right, and one
has a lot to do with the integrity of major
League Baseball.
Speaker 5 (01:18:10):
The suit accuses Otani and Bellello his agent of tortous tortuous,
tortuous interference. Tortious interference. What does that even mean? You
torture the guy when you know.
Speaker 6 (01:18:23):
That tortous is not all about the roots the Latin
here that is incorrectly tortured him, not that's literally bamboo shoots.
Speaker 5 (01:18:30):
What did he use?
Speaker 6 (01:18:31):
No? Uh, tortous you have do you in all the
movies that you watch?
Speaker 5 (01:18:36):
And it doesn't just have to be lethal weapon? Is
there a method of torture that is that comes to
mind that you think is top of list, like the
worst possible, Like when you're trying to get your way
or get the information out of him, make them talk. Well,
the first thing, it's not necessarily seen clockwork Orange, I
(01:18:56):
mention missing an action. Remember when I mentioned lethal weapon, Josh.
Remember when they put John Rambo on that mattress and
tied him up to an electrical current. Me personally, he
told Murdoch he was coming for him.
Speaker 6 (01:19:08):
I'm coming to get you like That's one of my
all time favorite movie lines. It was delivered brilliantly, and
it was right after they tortured him. They electrocuted him
over and over and over again. He could take it,
and then he beat him up. He was John Rambo
and then he I mean, especially since we're in radio,
he grabbed the microphone clutched it like I don't know
(01:19:28):
about you, but John's strength, he probably broke it. But
for the movie, they didn't break all while being five
foot eight, Yes, he looks like he's six foot five.
But they just wanted a little intel from John, so
they went the Electrocrucian route.
Speaker 5 (01:19:44):
Don't forget want to say film speaking of torture, since
we're doing this all of a.
Speaker 6 (01:19:48):
Sudden, it has nothing to do with the story. Remember
when he was in the mud with the leeches all
over him by choice? Well, make the radio call. He
was he was hiding. No, no, he thinking of predator,
you're thinking of predator.
Speaker 5 (01:20:03):
He was in the pit. He was tied up in
front of the POWs, who somehow were having a better
day even though they had been there since Nam just
a wild movie. Part two, Rambo First Blood Part two.
Why didn't they call it second Blood? Well, that's true
since the first movie was called First Blood. It wasn't
even called me.
Speaker 6 (01:20:23):
It's definitely not first Blood. That already happened.
Speaker 5 (01:20:26):
Was the best scene the end of Rambo First Blood?
What's he doing?
Speaker 4 (01:20:30):
Just what?
Speaker 5 (01:20:33):
That's how he sounded. No, if he wasn't in Richard
Krenna just had to stand there and have a straight face.
Speaker 6 (01:20:37):
Don't shoot, mom, babysitter, whatever movie he was, that would
have been my all time least, don't they tell no, no,
that's a different movie.
Speaker 5 (01:20:44):
Stop or my mom will shoot. That's better.
Speaker 6 (01:20:47):
Sylvester's performance at the end of First Blood I could
do without.
Speaker 5 (01:20:52):
Why so teary? I know he's veterans who had been
neglected everywhere. I know, I know why you like it performance.
I liked it. I thought it was great all right.
When we come back four o'clock hour. We'll try to
get back on task. Also, we know when the Astros
will be playing in the World Series. We'll tell you
that next.
Speaker 2 (01:21:12):
The A teen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:21:18):
Two, lifelong Houston sports guy's named at him talking your team.
Speaker 2 (01:21:26):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A team.
Speaker 5 (01:21:37):
I think I like the first Rambo movie more than
wex likes the First Rambo movie. Everything up until that
was great, until the end when he wins the Academy
Award for that performance. Yeah, I guess so. If the
Shinebox hadn't exploded, then you wouldn't have had that great acting.
He didn't win an Academy for that. He got the
Academy for Rocky very good in that one. He wrote it.
(01:21:58):
He wrote a great movie. Not I wonder who should
play Rocky. You know that he would not heal. I
don't know anything. You don't know. I don't know. He
refused to sell them the script unless he could star
in the movie. Sounds like Vinnie Chase. I think I
think that's the I think that's exactly what was going
on there. Something something like he didn't it wasn't it
was selling the script.
Speaker 10 (01:22:19):
Was that the aspect of selling the script, and he
said that he would not sell the script to any
place unless he could play the part. And in part
of the process to make sure the script was sold
of the right people, he gave up his dog and
then bought his dog back.
Speaker 5 (01:22:30):
That's what I do. Remember that part. I gave him
my dog. I did not know that I didn't have
a dog for a while until he got it back
to ye. It's why it's one of the greatest movies
ever made.
Speaker 4 (01:22:37):
Him.
Speaker 6 (01:22:38):
Yeah, the backstory makes it good.
Speaker 5 (01:22:40):
He's he's not talking about First Blood. He's talking about Rocky.
I know, even though the first rock Rambo.
Speaker 6 (01:22:46):
Movie to Rambo script that he didn't did, didn't write
unless he got to play John Rambo. I don't think
he wrote the first Rambo WEX. I know just because
he wrote everybody knows you were talking about Rocky. He
didn't need to clarify just.
Speaker 5 (01:23:00):
Saying both of them. He's a little more more up.
Speaker 6 (01:23:02):
I mean, I don't know if he wrote Rocky five
or not, but he did star in it.
Speaker 5 (01:23:05):
That was a terrible movie.
Speaker 6 (01:23:07):
I mean, I'm not sure which role he demanded to
play in Tango and Cash, but I know he was
in it.
Speaker 5 (01:23:12):
Who was worse Stopping my mom will shoot a Rocky five?
It's a push? Oh it is? Which one's worst? Better
than that? Are terrible? Wait?
Speaker 6 (01:23:22):
I love stopping my mom will shoot. No, you don't
love it, just like you just think he does.
Speaker 5 (01:23:26):
You don't. Hey, they're both great films. I was in them. Yeah.
Well it's a terrible film, but it's a fun watch.
Speaker 6 (01:23:31):
Astros unfortunately placed Josh Hater on the injured list today.
If you missed that information, shoulder reset things, a left
shoulder strain is what it was termed by the Astros.
Speaker 5 (01:23:41):
Today.
Speaker 6 (01:23:42):
We'll hear from Joe Aspota from the ballpark here shortly
if in fact there is additional information that they can share,
but at least fifteen days retro to yesterday, he is unavailable.
Sean Dubin has been reinstated and Colton Gordon has been recalled.
The second pitcher off of the astros twenty six man
roster is Hector Nerist, also off to forty men roster
(01:24:02):
as he was DFAD pitched in last night's game, got
the first two hitters out with a five run lead,
then homer double double, and he was lifted and Steven
Okert followed by giving up a homer and that's four runs,
seven to six game, but the Astros were able to
give the ball for the first time ever to Annuel
Delos Santos. He was able to get it to within
(01:24:22):
one out of conclusion and Bennett Sussa threw four pitches,
got us fourth save maybe more on the way for
him two and the Astros got the first game of
this series. Three games with Boston, three games with Baltimore
on this homestand a win in either Tonight's game or
tomorrow Knight's game, and the Astros will have won a
third consecutive series. Second start since his return from the
(01:24:43):
thumb injury for Spencer Arraghedty tonight. Dustin may Late of
the Dodgers, pitches tonight for the Red Sox. Harrin's lots
of red hair under his now whatever.
Speaker 5 (01:24:56):
The big Yes, Okay, that's why I call him that
he looks like him. He hair that would there's a
like the fact that they have him now just shows
you how far not far, but how I guess the
Rocky the journey has been for him. He was absolute
dominant as a Dodger. He has unbelievable stuff.
Speaker 6 (01:25:16):
But unfortunately he had not been able to stay healthy
much from a pitching standpoint, and then he had a
catastrophic esophageal injury that put him out.
Speaker 2 (01:25:26):
For over a year.
Speaker 5 (01:25:27):
That happened again, there was something crazy flucish.
Speaker 6 (01:25:29):
Very flukish, but a tear there which can very easily
be fatal. Obviously it wasn't in his case.
Speaker 5 (01:25:37):
Was he yelling at his commanding officer like Rambo. It
wasn't for yelling.
Speaker 6 (01:25:41):
No. By the way, we have some people that weighed
in on the torture in movies go ahead. Somebody suggested
Kathy Bates in Misery, and I said that was diabolical.
You know, want information from the guy. She just didn't
want him to leave. She wanted to write a new book,
like there is all that?
Speaker 4 (01:26:00):
Is that?
Speaker 5 (01:26:00):
A Stephen king one a misery? Yeah? It sounds right,
but I don't know, like why it is. Why are
people surprised that he's an absolute kook? Now? He literally
wrote books for decades showing you the evidence of this.
Do you know the ending?
Speaker 6 (01:26:13):
He's a Red Sox fan. I do know, very famous
Red Sox fan.
Speaker 5 (01:26:16):
Yeah, well there you go.
Speaker 6 (01:26:18):
Dustin May has not pitched very well this year, by
the way, nor did he pitch well in his first
outing with the Red Sox.
Speaker 5 (01:26:23):
So who's gonna shll him first tonight over the You.
Speaker 6 (01:26:26):
Know, I feel I kind of feel like it could
be Sanchez's first homer is an Astro okay, And I
do feel like al Tuve Ambush could very easily hit
a first pitch home run from whatever it bat might
be during the game. He doesn't bat first anymore, so
not first pitch is a game, so I need to
get my seats early. Yeah, you and everybody else, very
(01:26:47):
very good crowd for the return of three different people.
Alex Bregman returned to play the Astros, Javier's first time
on the mound since May of last year, and obviously
corre is tenth game back with the Astros, more likely
titled first game back in Houston.
Speaker 5 (01:27:04):
How many Astros? So you saw the screen last night,
late in the game, when it was still very much
in doubt and they were trying to sock away that
final out, It was still packed in there. There was
not It wasn't like a bunch of people had left,
even though it was the night before school or the
night after or the night of your first day of
school in some cases. And that's what I was going
to ask you. How many kids were in the crowd
(01:27:26):
last night, Like, huh, dad, we're not leaving because we'ren't
gonna do anything tomorrow. Anyways, it's only the second day
of school. You still have to get there. I don't
even know. Yeah, but yeah, but you know what. I
dropped him off the other day, just in a side
on this subject, though, I had to take his little
badge back. We forgot it on our way out the door,
and I was like, ah, he's in his classroom. He
(01:27:47):
doesn't need it right away. So I waited a little bit.
We leave, and it's eight o'clock by the time I
leave the house again to go run it up to
his school, and I'm like, there's no way there's going
to be anybody there. Now. There were people bringing their
kid to school. I'm like, how are you late to
that extent on the first day. I mean, I get it,
(01:28:09):
we're all getting back into the routine of doing this,
but we're like whole families are walking their kid in
like forty five minutes late to class. What's going on here?
Speaker 6 (01:28:18):
You just said they're not doing anything on the first day,
So what difference does make.
Speaker 5 (01:28:21):
Well, that was the first day though they didn't go
to the Astros game. The night before they played in
New York in the afternoon. They had no excuse. Maybe
they were there. Maybe that is their excuse. I'm talking
about yesterday not today.
Speaker 6 (01:28:34):
Also, sadly, moves similar to that on the Astros side
made by the Texans today. Brevin Jordan tight end hurt
and yesterday's practice inside the practice bubble. He's on ir
His season for twenty twenty five is not going to happen.
Played just parts of the first two games last year
before an ACL injury sidelined him for the remainder of
the season, and made his way all the way back
(01:28:56):
again less than a year later, barely but extremely strong recovery,
and unfortunately that is where things stand for him. Most
likely the Texans will have another tight end end in
camp in the next couple of days. Did not happen today.
They actually added a tackle. Cam Robinson has not practiced
and well over a week, but he was on the
side field working out. Trent Brown has not yet come
(01:29:17):
off the pup list. He's one of five players that
still remains there. Tank Dell Jimmy Ward among those that
are still on that list. Blake Fisher got some work
today at right tackle with the Ones. Titus Howard was
out there at the beginning of practice on the field.
He remained at practice the rest of the day. So
if there was a reason why he no longer was
taking reps at right tackle with the Ones or any
(01:29:38):
other unit, I don't know what that is, but it
wasn't anything visually apparent. As I said, he stayed on
the field on the sidelines with his teammates throughout and
there was no nothing I could see that sent him
to the sidelines. Fisher actually had to miss a few
reps with the Ones as well. He had some sort
of issue with a finger on his right hand that
got it worked on or taped up or regloved and
(01:29:58):
ended up going back out. But the new tackle they
signed Connor McDermott, who was originally drafted as a Patriot
when Nick Kassaria worked there and didn't make the team
his first year. He's bounced around the NFL since then,
a little bit of overlap with Nick Kaylee last year
with the Rams, though he was hurt all last year
and didn't play, he actually got some first team work
(01:30:19):
with the text as a brief amount. He was actually
working at both sides of the line, right and left
tackle Christian Harris Damian Pierce notable. This was their first
real rotational work, you know, the top two running backs
because Nick Chubb today was working full Yesterday I had
the red jersey on and wasn't working full he was today.
Those two guys got the reps as the top two
(01:30:39):
running backs out there. They ran a bunch of seven
on seven, multiple sets of eleven on eleven drills, and
Pierce went through all that same thing defensively for Christian Harris,
He and Henry Toatoa essentially were rotating that second linebacker spot,
although Aziz al Shaer also came off the field during
some of that rotation. I personally saw Jalen Mills on
(01:30:59):
the field for the first time, the safety they signed
after the CJ. Gardner Johnson injury. He's running with the
two's nice practice for him. Made a couple of plays,
a pass breakup, and looks like somebody that has a
pretty good chance to make this team.
Speaker 7 (01:31:13):
M J.
Speaker 6 (01:31:13):
Stewart's getting the reps with the ones at safety in
the place of CJ. Gardner Johnson, and saw a bunch
more wide receiver dB drills today. Those are among the favorites,
especially since they usually do those right in front of us,
and I think we'll see a whole lot more of
them on Thursday when the Panthers are in town. We'll
see a bunch of one on one work between O
line and D line. We'll see eleven on Eleven's most
(01:31:36):
likely without some of the key players, but we'll see
for either team. It's just a matter of how the
coaches want to play it. But just something that stood
out to me in the one on ones specifically designed
for Nico to go up against Kamari Lassiter in this
go round, and most of the time it's Nico Collins
against Stingley. Stingley was working against John Metchi the two
(01:31:59):
plays that they were against one another, both with CJ
throwing Mechi was able to get Stingly stumbling a little
bit and made a relatively easy catch. Second time they
matched up, he was able to get to the back
of the end zone and his quarterback threw him open.
Speaker 5 (01:32:15):
He wasn't really open.
Speaker 6 (01:32:16):
If the route continued as it likely was designed to,
it would have been some sort of miracle catch in
the corner of the end zone, but Stingley was essentially
all over it, so he threw it behind him and
Mechi caught that, you know, visually, and then made the
adjustment to it. Great throw, great catch, great win, and
more of what you're probably gonna need if you're John Mechi.
As Braxton Burrios continues to run a pretty good camp
(01:32:39):
and continues to be a part of their return game.
They're gonna have after the top five, which I think
are clear as day. I think it's very interesting to
see what the Texans will do, how many they'll carry,
and who those players might be. Just a little tidbit
of emptying the notebook from practice today with the Texans.
Speaker 2 (01:32:57):
The A team on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 5 (01:32:59):
Ninety Great afternoon.
Speaker 6 (01:33:04):
Hopefully you agree here on the A team xac Cole
Thompson with you, though some of the news we've shared
and will continue to share as not ideal. Mentioned earlier
from the ballpark, the Astros have placed Josh Hater on
the fifteen day IL. The update from manager Joe Aspata,
who meets with the media around this time each day
for a seven and ten first pitch over the ballpark
(01:33:25):
Matt Kawahara the Chronicle Channel Room of the Athletic Brian
McTaggart of Astros dot Com I've all noted some of
these items from Joe Aspata Hater getting further testing to
determine the severity of the shoulder injury, so they're unsure
of the timeline. A Spota described it as a punch
(01:33:46):
to the gut. I would agree, considering what he's meant
to this first place team and locking up victories that
were within reach an exceptional job of that. The Salt
Lake Bees are visiting Sugarland this week, beginning with tonight's
game six game series, and tomorrow Luis Garcia will pitch
against them for the Space Cowboys. On Friday, Lance mccullor's
(01:34:10):
junior will pitch against them for the Space Cowboys as
both of them continue rehab work. It'll be the first
official rehab appearance this go round for Lance mccullor's following
his blister. Obviously, Luis's continue his rehab work, having not
pitched in two seasons for the Astros. Joe spot indicated
we could be seeing Jordan Alvarez progressing to the point
(01:34:33):
of live pitching potentially this weekend in West Palm Beach,
Florida's among many astros like we told you yesterday who
are continuing their rehab progressions in Florida. That includes Jake Myers.
He's getting close to getting into rehab games as he
continues his work in Florida. Of all the things I
just told you, that's the one that stands out the
(01:34:56):
most because it's my first indication of any kind of
timel at all on Jake myers injury. If he's close
to getting into rehab games, then that means he's close
to returning, whether they want him for three or five
or seven back to back games, set seven innings in
the field, whatever that means. I'm very pleased to hear that.
The Jordon news is typical of the path. He's taking,
(01:35:16):
a very slow, tortoise like path, and I can understand
why you might do that for whatever reasons they have,
and we don't know. Live BP is just the next step,
and hopefully he'll continue to take steps. But I'd be
nice to get somebody who was helping this team quite
a bit, both defensively and having the finest offensive season
of his career. If he's not too far off from
(01:35:37):
joining this team. Hopefully that means before the end of
the month.
Speaker 5 (01:35:40):
Yeah, well, the last time Jake Myers is in the lineup,
Carlos Creo is not an Astro. It's just crazy to
think about how much has transpired since some of these
guys were on the shelf. I Meanjuron Alvarez is like,
what is this twenty nineteen.
Speaker 6 (01:35:52):
Twenty four, Tonight will be twenty five games missed since
the ile stint began for Jake.
Speaker 5 (01:36:00):
And again, I don't want it to be like, oh,
you know, it was just a feel good story, like
they're a good team that can go the distance when healthy.
So I don't want this to just be a weathering
of the injury storm and they like, now you might
as well go ahead and do something with this, while
(01:36:20):
at the same time, you know, breaking the hearts of
Seattle fans. They can still make the playoffs and somebody
else could beat them. Yeah, every time I see those scenario,
like if I.
Speaker 6 (01:36:32):
Saw some today that had the probabilities percentages of making
the postseason, the Mariners were ahead of the Astros. As
in what I've been saying, I think they're currently they're
a better team. They're going to make the playoffs. Whether
they beat the Astros for the division title is imaterial.
They're going to the playoffs. The Mariners, Astros, Tigers, and
Blue Jays four spots. Those four spots to me are earned,
(01:36:57):
and the Yankees are not. The Yankees are by no means,
ay lot, the Red Sox are not.
Speaker 5 (01:37:03):
I'm telling you right now, they're not making the postseason
and it's going to be hilarious.
Speaker 6 (01:37:06):
Well, I do think they're capable teams, but you gotta
tell me those teams are gonna I know the Yankees
are gonna play poorly, but or the Rangers have to
play well in order for that still to facilitate all.
Speaker 5 (01:37:20):
Rangers had a five run comeback last night. Yeah, they
did what the Red Sox couldn't.
Speaker 6 (01:37:25):
Who started last night. They'll serve it up to you
on a solar platter, probably that bum Nate Uvaldi. Five
runs Arizona put on native Valdi. You know why then
didn't meet the Rangers. You know why they did that
because here, yes, he is a bum. They got a
ninth inning homer from Rowdy to Les and a tenth
inning walk off from Jake Berger.
Speaker 5 (01:37:46):
Well, you better get home runs from guys named rowdy.
He hits homers and does very little else.
Speaker 6 (01:37:51):
But the Rangers probably made a very smart move and
adding him to a team that needed punch. And Jake
Berger looks like his name a lot of them that
was my name, I'd probably say, why not play it
out in full, why not be morbidly obese? He's playing
Major League Baseball. I doubt he's morbidly obese.
Speaker 5 (01:38:10):
This is not the first guy that he probably enjoys
a burger or two, princefielder Matt Stairs. Way, but Matt
Stairs was nowhere near the size of these guys. He
was fat, absolutely fat. If you must, yeah, so yeah,
I think. I think when the Astros get to the
World Series after all of this, it will be so
(01:38:31):
much more satisfying. And we know when they'll be getting there.
October twenty fourth, first day of the World Series.
Speaker 6 (01:38:38):
Each of the respective postseason series dates were issued today
for the postseason, which the Astros have participated in many times.
Over starts on the twenty fourth, could end as late
as November one. A Game six, if there is one
in the World Series, it will be played on Halloween.
Speaker 5 (01:38:57):
So the interesting thing about this was that it Major
League Baseball had originally decided that, and they did this
last year. They said this last year that Game one
of the World Series would move up from October twenty
fifth to October twenty second if the championship series both
(01:39:17):
of them ended by October nineteenth, when both leagues were
scheduled to be through Game five. But then the Mets
won Game five of the NLCS before losing to the
Dodgers in Game six. So since the league championship series
expanded to best of seven, and that was way back
in nineteen eighty five, both leagues ended in four or
five games in eighty nine, two thousand and one. They
(01:39:39):
go through all these years, but last year was the
first in which MLB announced a flexible schedule. I know
it's only a matter of three days. Do you like
this though? You like this decision or would you have
preferred they just well, everybody's done, let's move it up.
Why are you playing into November?
Speaker 6 (01:39:58):
Because it's baseball, It actually does matter basketball. We talked
about it last year, the way that the schedule was
announced and then series that were over early. There's some
clearly some advantage to getting extra rest in basketball, especially
at that stage when we know the NBA title is
almost always determined by who's healthy and who's not. But
it's totally different in baseball because of the pitcher. I mean,
(01:40:19):
you have aces, you have frontline starter, you have a
number one, you have a number two. If they don't
move it up, it doesn't I mean in your series
ending rotation, just doing it all over. The Astros in
twenty twenty two, I don't know if it was the
reason they won, but it sure helped because it was
not only their starters, it was their bullpen. Dusty said, man,
these guys are really good. I sure hope I can
use them in every single inning of every single game.
(01:40:41):
And he could smartly, brilliantly. They didn't lose a playoff
game until Game one of the World Series.
Speaker 5 (01:40:46):
He win every game.
Speaker 6 (01:40:47):
You get extra days off, You're getting the built in
days off within the series that now has been a
super short series. So you can give the ball to
Montero and Presley and a Bredo over and over and
over again, and you keep getting to start series with
your number one and your number uber two. It's brilliant
in baseball, it really matters. So moving it up is
probably something now if you want the best possible games
(01:41:09):
and matchups. You don't move it up, and then you know,
maybe you see more of that ace pitching in game
one and four and seven or one in five, and
they're available out of the bullpen in the seventh if
game seven, unless you want to use Will Harris, you know,
anything like that. Maybe you think about it that way.
The three days most of the schedule, as you know,
is unchanged. Regular season ends on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, if necessary, Thursday,
(01:41:33):
they'll play out the three game wild Card series. It
only takes eight days for the Division series to be played,
to go Saturday to Saturday if you need game fives,
and then the League Championship series similarly ten days tops
Sunday to the following Tuesday. Then you're ready for the
World Series. Astros and Padres.
Speaker 5 (01:41:52):
Do you every think about that? The Astros probably should
have won that championship in five games. While we're on
the subject, because Justin Verlander completely blew five run leading
Game one at home. It happened. Yeah, like everybody is
for as as much as I remember us talking about
that series going into it and how evenly they were matched,
and how this is anybody's series.
Speaker 6 (01:42:10):
And it would be impossible to win in Philadelphia. Yeah,
round impossible.
Speaker 5 (01:42:15):
What were they called? I know that Seattle was the
Electric Factory and that went over really well. What did
they call Philadelphia? Remember that? Oh where the electric factory?
Remember the stupid Yankee fans on the street. I do
remember that made you win the games? How'd that go
for you? And then Philadelphia? Yeah, you can't win here.
Oh look at Dlance mccolors. He got shelled. Now they
know hit you the next night. Stupid through Philadelphia fans.
(01:42:38):
They don't know anything. They thought Apollo Cree was gonna
beat me in the rematch, like it was. But justin
Verlander in Game one of the World Series in twenty
twenty two, had a five run lead and then what happened?
Speaker 6 (01:42:50):
Uh, he immediately gave up five run immediately. They scored
twice in the first, three in the in the third
five nothing. Then the Philly scored three in the fourth
and two in the fifth, and they played scoreless base
until the tenth inning.
Speaker 5 (01:43:01):
Then they said, bye, we didn't like that, go sign
with the Mets. Then they traded for him and they
almost won the World Series again. Stupid Rangers. The moral
of the story as always stupid Rangers. We will get
to our signature segment when we come back. It's a Tuesday,
so that means it's time to ask the question, say
what that is? Straight ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:43:24):
The Age On Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:43:30):
This is Adam and Adams Weekly jumped through mind bockling
moments that make.
Speaker 5 (01:43:36):
You go, hey, what.
Speaker 4 (01:43:40):
What time?
Speaker 5 (01:43:43):
Tide?
Speaker 7 (01:43:43):
What is here?
Speaker 4 (01:43:44):
What are you talking about?
Speaker 5 (01:43:46):
On a Tuesday? Pay what odin?
Speaker 7 (01:43:49):
I did?
Speaker 2 (01:43:50):
Now say what?
Speaker 5 (01:43:52):
Never know what to believe?
Speaker 6 (01:43:53):
When you're all around on a social media or other
related digital outlets that you can uh say, oh, I
saw this post, I saw this message. We're here at
say What our signature segment halfway through our number three
on a Tuesday edition of the show, and so we
wonder aloud, what are they talking about here? And I
bring that up because there was a story we brought
(01:44:15):
up earlier on show Hey Otani, and the first time
I saw it, I didn't know if it was real
or not. So rather than taking the posts that I
saw and clicking on the link and reading the story
that was then posted, I wanted to find it elsewhere.
Go to say the AP site and look on their
side and scroll through their stories and find it there
(01:44:35):
to feel like I wasn't duped and somebody to just
write a story in some non existent paper and have
me fall for it. Yesterday I saw someone scrolling through
what were alleged to be Arch Manning's they soon to
be starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns.
Speaker 5 (01:44:54):
What were alleged to be.
Speaker 6 (01:44:57):
Just a long, never ending stream of Venmo payments and
the comments associated with it. Normally, like when people of
another generation much older than me would write checks, there's
a little memo section and you would write what it's for, electricity, groceries,
(01:45:17):
whatever the case may be, made service do you think?
Speaker 5 (01:45:20):
Like what what do you think the oldest person still
living today has that has written a check ever? Or
the youngest person I should say not the oldest.
Speaker 6 (01:45:29):
I messed that upon the thirties, twenties, Like there's probably
someone in their twenties that people that currently do write
checks to pay bills, probably because they're afraid of putting
all their information into easy easy, easy auto pay. But whatever,
I mean, I'm thirty one and I've written a check.
Speaker 5 (01:45:45):
There you go.
Speaker 6 (01:45:46):
There's just now he's the answer to your question, I think,
And I'm bragging how much younger he is in US again,
Uh yeah, younger. I'm not thirty one. He is in
fact younger than I am. So I saw that and
figured this probably isn't accurate, and I know the reason
that it came up. It came up because Oklahoma officials
are aware of John Mattie's venmo activity that surfaced online
(01:46:07):
last night that twice references quote sports gambling and includes
a reference to a specific game materia is consistently denied
to OE YOU officials. Ever being involved with gambling is
from Pete Thammil ESPN, and it was alleged that while
he was at Washington State as a freshman, these entries
(01:46:27):
payments on his venmo with those associated captions, memos, descriptions
were reason for alarm, and John Mattei has taken to
social media. He is the quarterback that transferred to Oklahoma,
very talented and stat filled from his time at Washington State.
(01:46:49):
Many people think he can do similar things at OU.
Speaker 5 (01:46:51):
They were nineteen number one Associated Press poll released yesterday,
or eighteen Texas Animals nineteen. But it just means more.
Speaker 6 (01:47:01):
And he writes from roughly three hours ago, the allegations
that I once participated in sports gambling are false false.
My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions
in question.
Speaker 5 (01:47:16):
You have a guess as to what his excuse is. Well,
I'm reading his quote right now.
Speaker 6 (01:47:21):
We're instead inside jokes between me and my friends. Remember,
this is a college kid and a freshman at that.
I've never been on sports. I understand the seriousness of
the matter, but recognize that taken out of context, those
Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise.
Speaker 5 (01:47:37):
I can assure my teammates.
Speaker 6 (01:47:38):
Coaches, and officials at the NCAA that have not engaged
in any sports gambling. I'm gonna guess each of us
whether it was because you're in a fantasy football league
and that's how money changes hands, or you have bought
tickets from somebody, You've done something, You've bought a chest
of drawers from somebody.
Speaker 5 (01:47:58):
No one calls it that. That's why I went that right,
Why the people call it? What a weird brought over
from British situation thing to say?
Speaker 6 (01:48:06):
May have used an online portal to transfer funds to
a different person all addresser a PayPal you know, Google
any number. Now you'll when you make that payment. Do
you actually put a comment in there so you'll know
what it is, so the person getting it will know
what it is.
Speaker 5 (01:48:24):
Funny, so everybody knows what Zell is. Yeah. Yes, when
I send money, even if it's to like Teresa, sometimes
I'll send her money for something or Brooklyn, I'll send her,
you know, like I'll give her some money whatever, way
to go.
Speaker 6 (01:48:39):
You got a bunch of a's, here's fifty bucks.
Speaker 5 (01:48:43):
Crazy you need she? I know she needs this. We
send her some money or whatever if if we want to, like,
make sure that we keep track of what it is.
Since nobody also balances their checkbook.
Speaker 6 (01:48:54):
That I got the transacting Oh my gosh, no, the
transaction register. That this is your box of checks? Yes,
always blank?
Speaker 5 (01:49:03):
You who did protissory fantasy leagues by hand with pencil
very early in my life of writing checks. Yes, I
spent the time balancing. You know, I balance after that.
Speaker 6 (01:49:15):
There could be any amount of money in there and
I'd have no idea.
Speaker 5 (01:49:17):
You know, how to balance my checking account? Now right
up here? Oh I didn't remember, I I that was
going to clear. Ah, crap, I have less money than
I thought. Whatever. You know a former employee here and
I used to compare how bad our checking account was,
like that, I can go lower. Yes, that's what we
would do. Well, we would know when payday was, so
we would we would check in with each other at
(01:49:39):
least once a month, sometimes twice a month. Hey, where
are you at? Well, no, where are you at? Are
you at zero? Yeah? I mean it was like, you know, stuff,
stupid stuff. You did all of this to say, do
we believe him?
Speaker 4 (01:49:52):
No?
Speaker 5 (01:49:53):
Yes, I don't believe him. So you do not believe him,
and you do believe him?
Speaker 10 (01:49:58):
Yeah, because of my messages are never what actually is
the transaction.
Speaker 6 (01:50:03):
I'm walking back by my messages for a payment service
that I have used. Okay, and I you know the
people that are in there. Most of them are pretty
standard and presumably accurate, mundane. But I do have a
payment from somebody to me that is absolutely total. Joe,
it's a it's a joke.
Speaker 5 (01:50:24):
Well, that's not what the money is for. Well, what
does it say?
Speaker 6 (01:50:27):
Wexler Kids college fund?
Speaker 5 (01:50:29):
So he owed you money for something? Yes, I guess,
and he just thought that'd be funny. Correct. Okay, but
when you are a quarterback, it a big program in
college football. How long ago was that I haven't seen. Yeah, okay,
so he was how old then? He was in high school?
Speaker 6 (01:50:48):
He was a freshman at Washington State.
Speaker 5 (01:50:50):
Oh he was at Okay, see that's I'm sorry, dude,
Like you got to be smarter than that, because for
no other reason, you'll have two guys like us talk
or three guys like us talking about it on the radio.
Speaker 6 (01:51:00):
So give us a little of you know, thirty seconds
or less. This guy's fine, everything will go away. Why
do you think this is legit?
Speaker 5 (01:51:08):
Well, a good excuse, all right.
Speaker 10 (01:51:09):
Well, Number one, eventually players, since they're already getting paid,
can start doing this on the side because it's going
to be passed by Congress. But number two, some of
my transactions are so raunchy and out of left field
that they're FCC regulated, and I enjoy having my job.
Speaker 6 (01:51:23):
I can't read them all. So you're essentially just saying
I think he's telling the truth because.
Speaker 10 (01:51:27):
One of us, yes, yes, children not walking in distract nopepont.
And also I have money on him to win the
Heisman Trophy, so I need him to stay.
Speaker 5 (01:51:36):
Active when he sells the penny stocks. Such great acting.
Speaker 6 (01:51:40):
When he interviews at the penny Stock imporium.
Speaker 5 (01:51:42):
Well yeah, but they're all looking at him like he's
an alien because he is compared to them. But yeah,
I mean, look, this does not surprise me. But again
that's it. Just these certain things you do, Like we
are public figures. If I get into a or road
rage all altercation and I flipped a bird at some
guy and he recognizes me from this station, that's going
(01:52:05):
to reflect poorly on not just Space City Home Network
but also Sports Talk seven ninety. So I always do
that with the window up the a on Sports Talk
seven ninety got a tweet during the break. WEX definitely
(01:52:26):
holds up the line. Writing checks.
Speaker 6 (01:52:28):
That's something people do did when you're in line and
you're gauging which of the aisles or which which number
you should go into check out when you're done with
your grocery shopping. All right, who's in this line? Is
their cart overfill overflowing? I think they can handle the
getting the groceries out and paying for them in a
(01:52:49):
reasonably quick manner. Who do I think might write a
check and you would choose your line accordingly. I'm gonna
of course definitely. At an earlier age, Yeah, I wrote
checks to purchase groceries that's long since not happening.
Speaker 5 (01:53:03):
Can you imagine now in today's society, with how everyone
is so impatient if somebody whipped out a check that
wasn't eighty.
Speaker 6 (01:53:10):
Five or older, Well, I even I don't even like
it anybody, And I definitely don't like it when somebody
I'm with, if I'm not paying, and whoever the person
I'm with might be, is paying, and you're in line
a line that you've been waiting, in a line that's
taken five to six seven minutes. How is it possible
(01:53:31):
that when you get to the front of the line
and they've tallied up your purchases, you still don't have
your credit card out?
Speaker 5 (01:53:38):
What are you doing? How about this? I'll take it
a step further. Why are you even taking the time
that much time? Get Apple paid for?
Speaker 6 (01:53:47):
Don't have your phone ready to tap? You don't have
your card ready to tap?
Speaker 5 (01:53:50):
Let's go. You're on your phone every other minute of
the day. How is that not ready right now? Rusty
also tweeted in this is not going to be because
this is not going to be PC. I'm just warning
you ahead of time. I once had my PayPal account
frozen because I put quote gehat fee end quote Taliban
training course in the comments on back to back payments
(01:54:13):
to my dad as a.
Speaker 6 (01:54:14):
Goof in case you were wondering if your entity is
paying attention and keeping tabs, there's your answer.
Speaker 5 (01:54:23):
Odd fee. Why were you paying for a holy war?
I think that's a bad idea. Taliban training course? What
you were you were doing the monkey bars? That's a
bad idea. Those propaganda videos are great, it's funny right
up until then what the monkey bars line? Until you
had your account frozen? Oh well, is this still true
(01:54:44):
that if you make like six hundred dollars or more
they try to tax you? Yeah? Oh is that the
old administration?
Speaker 6 (01:54:50):
I don't think there's been a change to that, like
contract employees, not yet.
Speaker 5 (01:54:53):
I haven't gotten to it. You mean on PayPal?
Speaker 2 (01:54:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:54:55):
Yeah, they taxed you. So if you make is it
is it transactional or is it like just once you
get to a six hundred dollars threshold and then anything
after that they tax after.
Speaker 10 (01:55:05):
Anything under six hundred. Because I used to get paid
on PayPal, anything under six hundred they were taxed.
Speaker 5 (01:55:09):
Why who your other rackets that you run?
Speaker 11 (01:55:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:55:13):
You know, yeah, a lot of people used to side hustles,
if you will side hustles. So so totally unrelated to this,
but just wanted to knock this out. A couple of
minutes we have before you get to football at five,
in case you missed it, tickets that we have to
give away mention those two shows that we have for you, uh,
tickets to see George Thurgood and The Destroyers, Ezra ray
Hart and The Never Ending Nineties, two different shows. Tickets
(01:55:35):
to give away to that coming up. Best three point
shooters in the NBA. It's pretty easy to figure out
who that is currently because we have statistics. Now you
can nitpick about, well, he does volume here and nobody's
paying attention to him there, and he's the worst guy
out there, so nobody ever defends him, and he shot
a great But there's all sorts of contingencies. Best three
(01:55:57):
point shooters per their rating on two K twenty six NBA.
Speaker 5 (01:56:02):
Two K, I mean, STEP's got to you at the top. Well,
Kevin Durant's second.
Speaker 6 (01:56:06):
I figured that ninety one is his rating, Klay Thompson,
Desmond Baane Isaiah, Joe, Zach Lavine and.
Speaker 4 (01:56:11):
And on on.
Speaker 5 (01:56:12):
Hope you enjoyed all those three point misses league.
Speaker 6 (01:56:14):
So ninety one to eighty seven, the ranking rating for
everybody ranked two through ten, nobody's at ninety two, three, four, five, six,
seven or eight. But there is one player at ninety nine.
You know who that is number one in the NBA
two K ninety nine rating three point shoot shooter.
Speaker 5 (01:56:32):
Who is Curry? Of course, wait which one? Oh, come on,
it's Steph Curry. The other one doesn't even play anymore,
Steph Curry. So I carried into the Rivers family.
Speaker 6 (01:56:42):
I quote tweeted that quote posted that three point field
goal percentage last season twenty four to twenty five, Durant
forty three percent, Curry thirty nine point seven percent. But
I didn't know if that was enough of a background
to where these players might be at this stage of
their respective careers.
Speaker 5 (01:56:58):
And they're two of the oldest.
Speaker 6 (01:56:59):
I went back to the last three seasons, Kevin Durant
forty one point seven percent, Steph Curry forty point nine percent.
In what world is Steph Curry ninety nine and Kevin
Durant is a ninety one? Besides the answer to my question,
in the NBA two K world, it makes no sense
like there's nothing else to factor in. Either you make
(01:57:20):
them or you don't. And here's your rating, right.
Speaker 5 (01:57:23):
Well, yeah, because unlike football ratings on Madden, or.
Speaker 6 (01:57:27):
Like when we say Mahomes is an overall ninety five rating,
it's because he got fifty other items within that rating.
Speaker 5 (01:57:34):
And even NBA players have other things but shooting.
Speaker 6 (01:57:37):
And this is not as a player, this is best
three point This is as their ranked as three point shoopers.
Speaker 5 (01:57:42):
You don't that's what I thought. Maybe I'm wrong. I
don't know. So what do you get?
Speaker 6 (01:57:47):
He's a ninety nine, and nobody else in the entire
NBA is above ninety two.
Speaker 5 (01:57:50):
So it's it's Curry ninety nine, Durant ninety two, you said.
Speaker 6 (01:57:54):
And Dallas Mavericks forward Klay Thompson is eighty nine.
Speaker 5 (01:57:58):
Well that's because he never played anymore.
Speaker 6 (01:58:01):
Memphis Grizzlies are magic two. Guard Desmond Vane is number four,
and the it'll be Kevin Durant versus Isaiah Joe on
opening Night. Two of the five best NBA two K
three point shooters, Isaiah Joe, Isaiah Joe, he's fifth.
Speaker 5 (01:58:19):
Why did I forget he was on the thunder. He
plays a smaller role. Oh, he doesn't get the playing
time that the free throw merchant does. Anything that's ga
not on that list, He's not. No, I thought he
was pretty high.
Speaker 7 (01:58:31):
He is.
Speaker 5 (01:58:32):
There's plenty, That's what I mean.
Speaker 6 (01:58:33):
The rating for it doesn't necessarily match up with the
literal actual shooting figures.
Speaker 5 (01:58:38):
But I'll tell you the Kevin Durant stuff. I know
this is like kind of joke, but it's not a
joke like he's going to because I think that I
don't know how they're going to use him in the offense.
I actually don't know. Do you think there's go?
Speaker 6 (01:58:53):
Well, right, guess who's going to leave the Rockets and
scoring this year by three to five points by a mile,
I'll pick could be twenty plus and Durant could be
in the twenty fives. Okay, pure scoring, Kevin Durrant, I
know who the better score is. But I'll be who's
gonna leave ten points on the table with free throw misses?
Speaker 5 (01:59:10):
A hater? Well, I'm not a hater. I hate that
he does that to me, to me, he's doing it
to me, No, I just these That's why JUST said.
I hope the league enjoyed the Rockets missing the amount,
the sheer amount of three point attempts that they did,
because those are by like fifty percent, are probably gonna
(01:59:30):
go in this year because he's that good. Yeah, if
you were unaware.
Speaker 6 (01:59:33):
The announcement that was made earlier today puts the Rockets
as the first game of the NBA season, a six
thirty Central time tip against the Oklahoma City Thunder on
the road. That's two day, October twenty first in the
game times for the five game Christmas Days slate we're announced.
Speaker 5 (01:59:48):
Who already knew the five matches Christmas Night?
Speaker 7 (01:59:51):
Me or you?
Speaker 6 (01:59:52):
We have not decided. I can tell you right now
on the air. A twenty five, twenty six A team
Rockets schedule calendar has been created.
Speaker 5 (02:00:00):
We flip it on. Wait August, I'll talk about it.
You guys don't have access to this sort of thing.
You can't see this.
Speaker 6 (02:00:07):
Rockets Lakers fourth game of the day, seven o'clock Central time,
Christmas Day. The two other Texas teams that play other
opponents night Christmas Night.
Speaker 5 (02:00:16):
Yes, so sorry, I had to.
Speaker 6 (02:00:19):
It's not daytime anymore, right at seven o'clock in December
and Houston is a sundown.
Speaker 5 (02:00:24):
Oh yeah, it's been down for an hour and a half.
Speaker 6 (02:00:25):
Okay, Calves, Knicks, Spurs, Thunder, MAVs, Warriors, Rockets, Lakers, Timberwolves, Nuggets.
That's your five game, playing your days of questioning.
Speaker 5 (02:00:35):
Denver one of the heritage franchises in the NBA, so
they get a home game on Christmas.
Speaker 6 (02:00:39):
Football at five is next here on the.
Speaker 2 (02:00:42):
Eighth, the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:00:49):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wentfloor are the A Teens.
Speaker 5 (02:01:02):
Final Hour the program.
Speaker 6 (02:01:04):
An hour from now, we'll be into the Astros on
deck show. In an hour from them and change. We'll
have first pitch from Dykin Park as the Astros tried
to take care of another series, take down the Boston
Red Sox for the second time in as many nights
with Astros Baseball right here on your home for Astros
Baseball Sports Talk seven to ninety. You can also catch
the game right here on your Telly Space City home network.
Speaker 5 (02:01:25):
Football game tonight. Bregman gets booed his first at bat tonight, boo.
Speaker 6 (02:01:29):
The remainder of visit bats after he homered for the
only runs off of Christian Javier last night. But it
is Football at five, opportunity for me to actually see
the Texans practice in person for the first time in
several practices, the last four practices they had in West Virginia,
followed by the game, and then yesterday's two pm practice.
I chose the show over watching practice football, so I
(02:01:51):
was not there yesterday. Today they were nice enough to
wrap up practice and just enough time for me to
make it here, so I was able to get over
there and watch a little bit. There are only four
guys that were not participating in practice today, you know.
Speaker 4 (02:02:03):
CJ.
Speaker 6 (02:02:03):
Gardner Johnson was among them. Jalen Reed, the other safety,
has not yet recovered from his minor injury. Erv Smith
not practicing, which means they're down two tight ends because
Brevin Jordan was placed on injured reserve today. The fourth
player wasn't practicing was working on the side is Cam Robinson,
the offensive tackle they signed late of the Vikings and
was previously in as their starting left tackle. Since he
(02:02:28):
went down at the Greenbrier, their starting left tackle has
been arianta Urser. He acquitted himself quite well in his
ten snaps against pretty reasonably skilled rushers for the Minnesota Vikings.
On Saturday, Thursday of this week, they will face the
edge rushers of the Carolina Panthers in a joint practice setting,
(02:02:50):
and that will be a very serious test and all
indications based on their respective health. He's going to be
starting there right at left tackle for that. Titus Howard's
been starting on the right side, though he bare got
any reps today. Looked like he was on the field
for the first set of work that they do, which
is very very early in practice and more of a
walk through speed. But after that he was on the
(02:03:11):
side just watching practice. Don't know that anything of significance
was taking place or they just wanted him off the field.
Blake Fisher and newcomer Connor McDermott got most of the
rest of the reps at right tackle. Jake Andrews continues
to get the work at center as the starter. Lacoln Tomlinson,
and Ed Ingram were starting at guard, so potentially their
(02:03:32):
starters are Ursery Laken, Tomlinson, Jake Andrews, ed Ingram, and
Titus Howard. The new line with their new offensive line
coach and their new offensive coordinator. By the way, I
don't think we mentioned this yesterday. Nick Cayley was calling
his first game ever on Saturday from the Booth decided
(02:03:52):
to call the game from the booth on Saturday, and
anticipates calling the game on this Saturday from the sidelines.
First play caller dimik O Rans talked a little bit
about that yesterday, just getting a feel for where things
might work best. So I'm sure they'll have a second
game in one of those two spots when they take
on the lines two saturdays from now, and then maybe
an ultimate decision on what works best. I tend to
(02:04:14):
believe he'll be on the sidelines for it, but we'll
see what happens in that regard. Lot of eleven on
eleven work, a lot of seven on seven work at
practice today, and a bunch of wide receiver dB drills that, again,
I think are some of the best things to get
guys ready. I running out of superlatives and amazement at
how well Kamari Lasser plays. His work is being done against.
(02:04:36):
Nico Collins. Had another interception of CJ. Stroud today off
to his left, a little bit of traffic there looked
like on this particular play, CJ was looking for Christian
Kirk and Lasser was able to go up and get it.
Derek Stingley Junior, during a set of goal line plays.
Texans ran some red zone work eleven on eleven. First
play got the Texans down to the seven yard line,
(02:04:56):
so that first and goal from the seven. First play,
nobody open. Scramble from CJ. Strodde. He runs out of
bounce at the five. Second and goal from the five.
He's looking towards the end zone, not anybody open, so
he throws a ball just out of reach of one
of his team members.
Speaker 5 (02:05:14):
So now it is second down.
Speaker 6 (02:05:16):
I'm not sure if it was headed to Xavier Hutchinson
or headed a Dulton and Schultz, but there was nobody
to get the ball to. So a second play from
the five yard line, third and goal. This time he's
looking for Nico Collins, overshoots it coveraged from sting and
then from the five yard line again, fourth and goal.
He's picked off at the goal line bed Derek Stingley Junior.
(02:05:36):
This is practice, I get it. Their two corners are
just incredible. They don't get beaten. Sting little give up
a touchdown this year, last year, will give up a touchdown.
The amount of plays they make on the positive side
versus the negative side is going to be overwhelming, and
they already put up some insane PFF like numbers, passer
rating against and everything around it. That is, I wouldn't
(02:05:59):
even call it the strength to their defense because of
what their edge rushers are. But we've gotten past the
defense dominating what I just described. I wouldn't say the
defense dominated. I would say that they won that set.
I think the offense has gotten a whole lot better,
even with the interceptions I just mentioned that CJ threw.
I think he had a much better day. I think
there are plays that he is now making that earlier
(02:06:19):
in camp that weren't. And my angst level or hesitation
to confirm his star status hasn't changed one bit. I
can come in here and tell you hasn't played well
this day, and I saw three practices. I don't really
like what I saw from him or the offense. It
doesn't change what I think about his upcoming season and
seasons and until those games happen, and I'm really turned
(02:06:45):
and say, well, that's that's not something I would expect
him to do. That's a play he would never make. Well,
maybe I'd have to change my tune if.
Speaker 5 (02:06:51):
That ever happens. What do you think I haven't gotten
there yet? And I don't think I will. What do
you think Derek Singley Junior's rating on madness?
Speaker 6 (02:06:58):
I don't know, since we're I mean, you know, I
do think we don't see Pat Certain every day. We
certainly don't watch his seventeen game seasons. We're obviously out
of Broncos practice. And I'm totally fine with anybody saying
they think he's better. I'm not okay with them saying
anybody else. There's not a single other name you can
say in the NFL.
Speaker 5 (02:07:16):
The best two.
Speaker 6 (02:07:16):
Corners are Derek Stingley Junior and Pat Certain, And I
don't really think there's much of a debate. So I
think there's some really good other corners, and there's perfectly
good Top ten and three, four and five are great
for their respective teams.
Speaker 5 (02:07:27):
They're just not as good as those two. How far
behind Stingley is sauce because that's he has to go.
Speaker 6 (02:07:32):
He's in gonna be playing a little bit differently this
year with how Aaron Glenn and their defense wants to play.
Speaker 5 (02:07:37):
I think his first year was so eye popping, and
it was warranted.
Speaker 4 (02:07:41):
It was.
Speaker 6 (02:07:41):
I mean, if you watched the Jets play that first year,
he was awesome. He was great in coverage, he was
great with prevention.
Speaker 5 (02:07:48):
Was a sticking point because Stingley was hurt and he
was picked and right there, the Texans defense was a joke.
It was Lovey's first year. It was awful. The Texans
were a joke. That's what you meant to say.
Speaker 6 (02:08:00):
It was Lovey's defense and the way that you just
drafted Derek Stingley Junior. I know you've been in DC
forever in the NFL, but you can't run the defense
when you have him on your team. You're wasting him,
You're making him look bad, and that's what happened. But yeah,
Sauce was way up at the top and sting did
not have a good rookie year. I thought their second
years already you saw why sting was maybe regarded as
(02:08:21):
a little bit better. But with injury history, maybe wasn't
everybody's pick over Sauce. And then I think we've seen
even bigger separations since it doesn't mean Sauce is bad,
it doesn't mean they've made a bad decision to extend him.
He's in the top ten. I would rate him as
one of the top ten corners in the NFL. Heading
into the season and if things go well there and
if they take to that defense and they get some
(02:08:42):
pressure up front, I think Reid is a good counterpart
for him.
Speaker 5 (02:08:45):
He's a very, very, very good player. He's just not
staying that's all. Yeah, no, and nobody is. I really do.
Regardless of what happens with CJ. Gardner Johnson, this defense
is going to be I hate to say this too,
but until further proof with the offensive line, they're going
to go as far as the defense takes them. I'm
(02:09:09):
they have to score.
Speaker 6 (02:09:09):
I know the way the season plays out, I'm not
sure that everyone sees it this way, but this is
how I see it.
Speaker 5 (02:09:15):
They have.
Speaker 6 (02:09:17):
A really challenging open to the season. I think it's
very challenging to play the Rams offense. It's clearly different
if Matt Stafford's out there versus Jimmy Garoppolo.
Speaker 5 (02:09:28):
Even if he's out there and hobbled though because it's
I'm not hearing good things. I know he's practicing it all.
Speaker 6 (02:09:34):
But to me, the difference is if you get to him,
he's not getting away from you.
Speaker 5 (02:09:41):
Oh no, he's a statue. You're going to sack him.
Speaker 6 (02:09:43):
You're going to create pressures, you're going to create disruptive
plays and you may even create turnovers.
Speaker 5 (02:09:47):
Big Tree fall hard.
Speaker 6 (02:09:48):
But nobody's played the Rams with both Puka and DeVante
Adams yet the Cowboys had a joint practice with them,
and they've played a preseason game against them. I think
this is going to be an exceptionally successful pairing and
a very difficult duo to defend.
Speaker 5 (02:10:07):
Garoppolo.
Speaker 6 (02:10:08):
That's right, and so it's possible you could see him.
The news on Stafford has continued to not be good.
Last week, Sean McVay said, well, we expect if everything
goes well, well, he's gonna be out there and practicing
to some extent on Monday.
Speaker 5 (02:10:20):
You cannot.
Speaker 6 (02:10:21):
At Monday's practice he was wearing street clothes.
Speaker 2 (02:10:23):
He not lose.
Speaker 5 (02:10:24):
Let's just say, for the sake of you know, this
scenario is Stafford doesn't make week one, which it's probably
gonna still take a miracle because it's week one and
three and a half weeks out, he can he can. Yeah, Well,
let's just say whatever they're they're gonna err on the
side of caution. They're not playing him, So Jimmy Garoppolo
gets the start. If you lose that game opening week,
(02:10:46):
it is going to be sky is falling here. Well,
I said, it's challenging the first two weeks. Tampa comes
to town for the first of the two Monday Night Baker.
They can pass the ball, Baker's good, Baker can avoid
the rush. He can make mistakes too, but it's not
a fluke that he thrived the way he did a
year ago. And they also have an arsenal web receivers
(02:11:09):
they do. So I think those two weeks are I mean, good, bad.
I don't know what word you guys would like to use.
It's challenging those first two weeks. It's a phenomenal test
for the defense. ESPN also made an announcement with some promotions.
Lisa Salters extended, Laura Rutledge added to their first team.
They will have two sideline reporters for all their primetime games,
(02:11:32):
Katie George and Peter Schrager will do the other games.
This Texans game first game of the night a week
two Monday Night football.
Speaker 6 (02:11:39):
They're getting the A team, so to speak. That's the
Joe Buck, troyg Mean, Lisa, Laura, everybody team. And it
is a six o'clock kickoff. Now after that if healthy,
They're gonna play Trevor Lawrence's offense and cam Ward's offense
against whom they should feast. And then it's payback time
when they go to Baltimore and play the more Jackson.
(02:12:00):
All that comes in front of their bye week. They're
off week. It's a very interesting way for them, interesting
mix of offenses for their defense to open their season.
Speaker 5 (02:12:09):
Up kicks is just winning Baltimore once? Please, that would
be nice. It'd be the first time.
Speaker 6 (02:12:14):
It would be very very nice to go ahead and
take care of that and say, hey, maybe we do
belong ahead of somebody in this top four and not
just permanently fourth.
Speaker 2 (02:12:25):
The AE on Sports Talk seven ninety, it.
Speaker 5 (02:12:39):
Is the A team. It's Sports Socks seven ninety, Space
City Home Network, where about forty five minutes away or
so until the Astros on Deck show gets underway to
get you ready for Game two of this three game
set between the Astros and the Red Sox. Astros drawing
Andrew first blood. You knew it was common If we
talk about Rambo at any point during the show and
(02:13:00):
then I talk about the Astros winning the first game
of a series, I'm gonna say they.
Speaker 6 (02:13:04):
Drew first, pretty sure, it's somewhere in the back of
your mind. You're You're like, well, they just played, they
just opened a series, but they didn't win, So I
don't want to bring anything Sylvester related up today.
Speaker 5 (02:13:13):
I gotta wait, what if I say it? What if
I used Stillon somehow in tomorrow morning's video? Provided the
Astros do their part tonight.
Speaker 6 (02:13:22):
We should our listeners would enjoy it. They would, they
would get it.
Speaker 5 (02:13:25):
Do I have carte blanche? You have carte blanche? So
does that mean I can use stop? Don't stop? Or
my mom will shoot whatever that name is that movie.
Speaker 6 (02:13:37):
To the zero people that recognize where it's from.
Speaker 5 (02:13:39):
But if they were listening to the show today, they'll
think it's hilarious. Since we have millions of listeners and viewers.
I mean, I I think it's been decided. I think
I'm gonna do that provided they do their part. Astros
have to win. That is that is true, and I think, uh,
I think they'll be in good shape to do that.
I mean, the Red Sox just through their first or
(02:14:01):
their best pitcher out there right, Yeah, no question about it.
So the bum they have going the night, he has
no chance can see Astro.
Speaker 6 (02:14:07):
Well, I do think the Astros had better take care
of Walker Buehler more so than they did the first time.
They could have. They should have destroyed him. And he's
not having a good year.
Speaker 5 (02:14:16):
And what happened to him, well another ex Dodger who
used to be dominant, Well, injuries now I know, and
then just may for him to come around and pitch
the way he did at the end of the season,
the very very very end, I mean the very end.
Speaker 6 (02:14:29):
That got him a huge payday from the Red Sox
basically one game of baseball.
Speaker 5 (02:14:34):
Yeah, does that not have more of a commentary on
just how comically bad the Yankees can be when they
want to be? Yeah, it does. I mean that, But
think about it like it's not. We joke about it
here in Houston because we have a we we have
a vested interest for obvious reasons. But like everyone else
(02:14:57):
plays the Yankees too, and everyone else has figured out
what they are. They hit the ball over the fence
sometimes and otherwise they're terrible offensively, their best pitchers out
for the year. Don't know what he'll be when he
comes back. I'm sure he'll be fine, because most guys
of his caliber are after Tommy John and the proper recovery.
(02:15:19):
There's no Garrett Cole this year. They had him last
year and he couldn't even cover first base.
Speaker 6 (02:15:23):
Yeah, last year in the postseason, he ended up pitching
twice against the Yankees, both in games at the end
of the series to close things out, and gave him
six innings and shut them out, and all six of
those innings, I only allowed two hits, struck out seven batters.
His regular season in twenty four talking about Walker Bulah
that preceded that, as the area was five thirty eight.
He only threw seventy five innings. His whip was one
(02:15:46):
five to five to three. He was just terrible this
year he has, I mean, I can't even believe this
far into the season his numbers are this similar, from
five three eight to five four zero, from one five
to five to three to one five zero. He is
exactly the same as last year. And last year he
was awful, but he pitched well in the World Series,
(02:16:08):
pitched well against the Mets right before that, and the
Red Sox said, would you like twenty five million dollars
to be in our starting rotation?
Speaker 5 (02:16:14):
He said yes. You know what's funny and he should have.
Why the Red Sox wouldn't pay Mookie Bets traded him,
just took a dive for a few seasons, and then
all of a sudden they're like, all right, we'll spend
money again. That's what it feels like happened. I know
that's very simplistic.
Speaker 6 (02:16:32):
What they're doing is and I'm not sure where things
go with Bregmann, but I'm kind of assuming that some
sort of long term deal is what they'll end up
agreeing to after this year. So instead of having eighty
million guaranteed for the next two, it'll be much more
in the hundreds or even more than that. But they
have so much young talent they could afford to do this,
and they could afford to pay Anthony early, which probably
is a team friendly deal, and they can do that
(02:16:54):
with other players. They already did it with Campbell. They
really are super talented and have a great system, and
they will not have to be overpaying for all these
other guys. And it's all facilitated by they found a
team to take on Rafael Devers contract that he just
signed a ten year deal that he was just at
the beginning of two years.
Speaker 5 (02:17:11):
The Giants, these days they made two big time but well,
I'm not gonna say Devers is gonna be a booboo,
but Justin Verlander was Yeah, but for not a ton
of money. It's a short term, little money deal. But
did you think I mean they obviously did so thinking
he would at least be the back end of the rotation.
He is at the back end of the rotation, and
that he's that's back ends being too nice for what
(02:17:34):
hest I mentioned it the other day. Here are the
actual figures.
Speaker 6 (02:17:37):
If Justin Verlander pitches, they're ten games under five hundred,
they're five and fifteen. Provided they don't give the ball
to Justin Verlander, they're fifty four and forty five, nine
games over five hundred playoff bound in the games he
doesn't participate in. Granted, some of those games are impacted
by how he performed, so it's not a fair note,
(02:17:59):
but just the numbers of it. We're not too concerned
about the Giants. We're not too concerned about the Yankees currently.
We'll be concerned about the Yankees again when the Astros
finish off their season series against them and obviously Boston tonight.
One thing we do want to mention here is our
teacher of the day. We've all gotten I think we've
all gotten our kids back to school by now, or
(02:18:19):
they've gotten themselves back to school and whatever.
Speaker 5 (02:18:21):
Bason went like game last night.
Speaker 6 (02:18:22):
Yeah, but they have plenty, hopefully plenty of teachers who
make a difference. Here's our chance to say thank you
in a big way. Iheartradios got there. Thank a teacher.
Powered by donors. Choose means you can nominate an outstanding
public school teacher who's gone above and beyond for their
students and it could win five thousand dollars to stock
their classroom with whatever they need. The teacher of the
(02:18:45):
day to day is Maricela Rodriguez. She teaches at Sundown
Elementary School, and our intel on Maricella Folks sold us
she never fails to try to evolve how she teaches.
No students left behind If no one fights for her students, well,
mari Sella will.
Speaker 5 (02:19:01):
Well we have people everywhere to look into this sort
of thing, and that's how we are able to get
back net. We cast out absolutely so yeah, absolutely, very
very qualified candidates. So you can help us say thank
you to the very educators shaping our future. And congrats
to Marisela, you're in the running to win those five
thousand dollars for your classroom. You can nominate your favorite teacher.
(02:19:24):
Is Wex mentioned right now at iHeartRadio dot com slash Teachers.
So the idea that.
Speaker 6 (02:19:30):
The Astros will be closing games with somebody other than
Josh Hader is reality. They do have the rest of
their bullpen I think in pretty good shape heading into
today's game, and they obviously have an off day before
Friday's series with the Orioles begin. By the way, the
Orioles said, that's it for Zach Eflin for the remainder
of the season. Batista similarly, they're playing the Mariners beginning
(02:19:53):
tonight without an off day before they start their series
with the Astros. So they're in Baltimore for three with Seattle,
then they come to Houston four three with the Astros.
This is the Orioles opportunity to have a say in
the American League West race, and I know they're not
in any race and haven't been in any race for
quite some time. I think the idea that they're playing
awful baseball is a little bit misguided, because they fell
(02:20:14):
well below five hundred and fired their manager seventy five
games ago when they were fifteen and twenty eight. Well,
they're fifty three and sixty five now, which means they've
played they're an average team for basically half the season
this season that they're currently in. Like, this is how
they're playing right now. They've gone thirty eight and thirty
seven over their last seventy five games. That's the Orioles
(02:20:36):
team essentially that you're facing. You're not facing a team
that had to fire their manager because they're so awful.
You're playing a totally competent, average team.
Speaker 7 (02:20:45):
I know.
Speaker 6 (02:20:45):
It's not one of the dregs of the league, which
their overall record says.
Speaker 5 (02:20:49):
That they are. Yeah, well, hopefully they sweep the Mariners.
I don't think that will happen. Hopefully they win the series.
How about a game I want to I mean of
your series against the Orioles.
Speaker 6 (02:21:02):
Also, like both of your series against Boston and both
of your series against New York come in succession. They
will they will play six I think of nine games
against the Orioles.
Speaker 5 (02:21:12):
Who, uh do you have the rotation in front of
you for the Orioles? I mean, uh for the Mariners
in this series? I mean I know, all of their
pitchers are basically good, but Kirby has.
Speaker 6 (02:21:24):
Been They're also having a great month of pitching.
Speaker 5 (02:21:27):
Yeah, but Kirby's been gettable. He used to be like
completely unhittable.
Speaker 6 (02:21:30):
Oh yes, he's pitching in his time back from an
injury that curtailed much of his season. He goes tonight,
Logan Gilbert goes tomorrow, and the Mariners close out the
series with probably their worst starter, Logan Evans, who would
not normally be in the rotation there with Bryce Miller
not really really unlikable.
Speaker 5 (02:21:49):
I don't know if you know like them or hate them.
They're just they're just another team. I do hate them though,
and you should too.
Speaker 6 (02:21:55):
All right, you can get everybody on board. Listen, start
an anti fan club again.
Speaker 5 (02:21:59):
Ross this the other day and I thought it was
absolute blasphemy on this station and I won't stand for it.
Oh this is fun. I want that.
Speaker 6 (02:22:06):
You know.
Speaker 5 (02:22:06):
I like this race? Do you do you like this race?
Speaker 6 (02:22:09):
I mean, like I said before, if you're five and
five against the Marriners, should play them at the end
of the season. You turn it into you won the
season series eight to five. You swept him in Houston.
Speaker 7 (02:22:17):
That's it.
Speaker 6 (02:22:18):
I don't nothing else is gonna happen. They're gonna win
the division. That's as easy as it can be.
Speaker 4 (02:22:23):
Now.
Speaker 6 (02:22:23):
Sweeping them as a chore, but that's all it takes.
Speaker 5 (02:22:27):
They have to outplay you. Still you're ahead of them.
Speaker 6 (02:22:31):
They may be at full full er strength because obviously
Miller's not back yet and you're not anywhere close. But
I think more than half of the remaining games, jord
On Alvarez and Jake Myers will be available to you.
Speaker 5 (02:22:44):
If Naylor comes back down to earth a little bit
and Suarez just becomes well the version that he was
in Seattle the first time. Eh. They don't intimidate me.
Good least of all. Cal Raley not worried about that guy,
all right. I am worried about what we haven't gotten
to today, and we will tackle that when we come back.
(02:23:05):
In case you missed it, as next.
Speaker 2 (02:23:07):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 6 (02:23:10):
Ninety, host of things we've touched on over the course
of the day here on the A team but maybe
deserve a little bit more attention, or some items that
we have not gotten to at all. One thing that
obviously is a part of the case you missed it today,
is the fact that the Astros made four roster moves.
Speaker 5 (02:23:31):
The one that is a gut punch, according to Joe.
Speaker 6 (02:23:33):
Aspata, is the placing of Josh Hater on the fifteen
day IL a left shoulder strain. It's what it has
been described as timeline still to be determined on his
return really not related to the fifteen day IL, but
more tests need to be done so they can determine
the severity of it. Hector Nares the other picture no
(02:23:53):
longer available to Joe Aspata. He has been designated for
assignment to pictures on the staff beginning tonight. Sean Duban
been reinstated from the fifteen day IL. He was able
to complete his rehab assignment without issue and is now
available out of the bullpen for the Astros. Same for
Colton Gordon, at least from an availability standpoint. He was
(02:24:13):
sent down earlier this week, but because the Astros had
an injury, he doesn't have to spend a specific amount
of time at the miners in the Miners before he's
allowed to be recalled because due to injury, he can
be immediately recalled, so he is now part of the
Astros once again, not part of their rotation, but in
light of the fact that Christiana Vieergi in five innings
last night, not sure what you're getting from Spencer Aragheddy today.
(02:24:36):
Hunter Brown has the finale of this series and then.
Speaker 5 (02:24:39):
On into an off day.
Speaker 6 (02:24:41):
I'm sure they'd like to be as light on the
arm as they've been leaning on for quite some time.
They obviously leaned on Josh Hater and a tremendous amount
over the course of the season.
Speaker 5 (02:24:50):
Did come off of that highest pitch count of.
Speaker 6 (02:24:53):
The season, used for two innings for thirty six pitches,
but that has been a reasonably regular occurrence since he
became an astro last season without issue. This is the
first time he has spent any time on the ill
as a major league pitcher due to something other than
the covid il.
Speaker 5 (02:25:10):
But that's where the Astros sit there.
Speaker 6 (02:25:11):
Update on Jake Myers that he could be not far
from a rehab assignment, continuing to do his work in Florida.
I think the words they used not far away from
playing in games and live BP for Jordan Alvarez, maybe
this weekend in Florida. It's only Tuesday. That's still five
days away or four days away if you consider Friday
(02:25:32):
the weekend party animals like myself, Well, I consider Thursday
of the weekend.
Speaker 5 (02:25:36):
In case you missed it. What else do we have today?
Speaker 10 (02:25:38):
Cole, Well, you were at Texans practice, but yeah, to
leave early because we left after practice concluded, but before
interviews began. So naturally, of course, to Mika, Ryan's had
to make a comment on what's happening this upcoming Thursday,
Panthers come to town.
Speaker 5 (02:25:50):
It's going to be a joint practice.
Speaker 10 (02:25:52):
This is an opportunity for starters to see a lot
of reps, probably more so than they would in the game.
But hey, to Miko, what's the most important thing that
you're looking for in this joint practice against Carolina?
Speaker 11 (02:26:02):
When you have a joint practice, the main protocol is,
you know, it's just keeping each other safe, understanding that
we're here to work together and make each other better.
We're not here to get in shoving contests or fights
or anything like that's unproductive. So and my message to
Dave and his teen is just we want to come
out and get good work in and make sure we're
(02:26:23):
getting productive work, making sure we're staying up just like
we practiced. So and I think when we got teams
and coaches that are that have the similar mindset, and
you can get productive work. We've done it for the
past two years with the Dolphins with the Rams, and
I thought we got really productive work out of that,
so I expected to.
Speaker 7 (02:26:40):
Be the same.
Speaker 6 (02:26:41):
Sounded like ESPN the Ochow type of competition, a shoving competition.
Speaker 5 (02:26:45):
But his point was, come on, guys, don't fight, get
it together, be mature, right.
Speaker 6 (02:26:51):
I'm curious what their defense will be this year. Talking
about the Panthers and thus the work that the Texans
will get against them. I don't think a lot of
people know defense particularly well. The names aren't widely known.
I don't think around casual fans, let's say, but it's
work against somebody that's not you, and it's designed to
go the way you want. I mentioned earlier, you're gonna
(02:27:13):
see one on one matchups a line, D line. You're
gonna see one on one matchups wide receiver, defensive backs.
Speaker 5 (02:27:18):
A couple of years ago, many years ago.
Speaker 6 (02:27:20):
Now, that's where one of the very notable joint practice
fights took place over at the Texans facility when then
Niner and then Texan DeAndre Hopkins and Jimmy Ward got
into it. There are a couple of dust ups when
the Falcons came to joint practice with the Texans. The
Rams were here last year, the Lions have been here
in years past with the Pencil head coach Matt Patricia.
(02:27:42):
In both of those instances, I don't remember anything happening.
I don't remember anything happening with the Rams last year,
and I don't suspect Dave Canalis's team and Demico Ryan's
team will get into much either. But obviously it means
the Texans defense will do work without tackling against Bryce.
Speaker 5 (02:28:00):
We'll get to see Teed.
Speaker 6 (02:28:01):
McMillan, a little bit up close player from Arizona. I
actually saw him up close last year doing the Cougar
game at Arizona, just you know, as a type of
receiver in this particular draft class, he and Jaden Higgins
I think have a lot of similarities and I'm not
sure what's really in between them, if any other receiver
(02:28:23):
that was drafted belongs in between them talent wise. Ted
obviously was inside the top ten and Higgins was inside
the top three of the second round. He went thirty fourth,
second pick of the second round. I would think that
each of them could have monster seasons this year. And
you know, I didn't mention it much about Higgins today
or yesterday. Higgins had a huge catch yesterday at practice,
(02:28:45):
described by those who were there as a sixty yard
touchdown or thereabouts. And just watching him run his routes,
especially when it's not just quarterback wide receiver drills when
you're running against air or a coach, but when he's
matched up against the Texan secondary, find his way to
the football, going up and getting the football, you know,
making the catch at the back of the end zone
because he can go up and get it, much like
(02:29:08):
we've watched Nico Collins the first several years of his career.
Could I mean, we had Nick on the on the
show last week and could have easily told him what
we think about the show job he has done at
the other positions, not offensive line, and we're gonna see
it again this year.
Speaker 5 (02:29:22):
What else do we have?
Speaker 10 (02:29:23):
So I know that AC's most overrated quarterback is Justin Herbert.
Mine is Jordan Love. I think he is completely overrated.
I am not sure that he is going to be
anything more than just a game manager that makes a
lot of mistakes.
Speaker 5 (02:29:36):
Wow, But this is why commenter. Organizations like the Green.
Speaker 10 (02:29:41):
Bay Packers get punished because Jordan Love is undergoing surgery
on Tuesday to repair a ligament in his left thumb
after injuring it on the final play of the preseason
matchup against the New York Jets. However, according to GM
Brian Goodacuns, he will be ready for Week one when
the Packers open up the twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 6 (02:29:59):
Yeah, this is something they don't consider it super significant.
It does prevent field time, and so that means that
all their receivers and everything at their offense will be
working with the backup quarterback for what could be maybe
all of the remainder of training camp, but maybe week
one practice week. He'd be back on the field. Eleven
interceptions in the two years. Each of the two years
he's been a starter. We obviously saw him first hand
(02:30:20):
last year when the Texans got together with them again.
The Texans really let slip away considering what they I
think made Jordan Love look like in that particular game,
putting themselves in position where if they again clearly in
my opinion, they should have won that game. Picking him
off twice their defense did to the Texans what we
started to see happen so many more times over the
(02:30:42):
course of the year. But he's got a little playoff experience.
I think he shouldn't. I think he should be viewed
very similarly to CJ. Stroud personally. I think some people
think he's better than that. Some people think he's worse
but overrated. I don't look at too many people that
I think are over the Jordan Love.
Speaker 5 (02:31:02):
They were. How many spots apart from each other in
that second tier of that athletic article I want to
I believe. Yeah, well, I think Stroud was nine and
Love was twelve. Sounds right. I'm kind of with I'm
kind of with you in that. For now, I feel
like they're in the same category. But going into that
(02:31:23):
game last year, it's like CJ. Stroud's head and shoulders
above him.
Speaker 6 (02:31:26):
And because of where they were in their careers, his
first year as a starter was man, I was awesome. Okay,
pay me, because now I'm three years in they have
done that. They have already shelled it out.
Speaker 5 (02:31:36):
For him, Thanks Aaron Rodgers. But that's okay if that
keeps on giving, I don't think it's a mistake at all.
But the years that Aaron Rodgers played there that he
wasn't playing. I'd like to go back and look at them.
I'm sure he was awesome, but still final segment coming up.
Speaker 2 (02:31:48):
Next The A on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (02:31:57):
Okay, well, Lex's in order, Sports Doc seven ninety, Space
City Home Network. You know, we like to give away
tickets to things here. I'll love you guys.
Speaker 6 (02:32:08):
You listen to our show, you win tickets.
Speaker 5 (02:32:10):
It's so simple. Well, we have lots of tickets. Yeah,
two sets of tickets. There you go. George thorough Good,
He's Bad at the Bone and the Destroyers, the Batter
Show on Earth. I don't know why I felt the
need to say that, like Vince McMahon, but I did.
It's coming up August twenty seventh at the House of Blues.
Tickets on sale now ticketmaster dot Com. Also a pair
of tickets to the Never Ending Nineties with Ezra ray
(02:32:33):
Hart Nineties Hits and Christmas Riffs on December thirteenth at
Smart Financial Center in Sugarland, featuring members of Sugar Ray,
Tonic and Better Than Ezra. I liked all those bands,
by the way, and I still do, performing their biggest
hits along with festive holiday Favorites Tickets on sale this
Friday for that show at ten am on Smartfinancialcenter dot net.
(02:32:58):
All right, I have brought to the table numerous times
on this show who I think is the most overrated
quarterback in the NFL or at least one of them
definitely gets way too much love and lieu of or
in light of the way that some of the critics
treat c. J. Stroud just last segment, So all you
(02:33:19):
had to be doing was listening last segment and make
it through the commercial break and get back to this
segment to know the answer to this question. Cole just
brought to the table who he thinks is his most
overrated NFL quarterback and.
Speaker 6 (02:33:32):
That quarterback's headed for surgery.
Speaker 5 (02:33:34):
Yeah he is. I mean there's a massive hint because
WEX likes to make this.
Speaker 6 (02:33:38):
Way easier than the way that you present that to everybody.
Which way is that and what you had to say
about it overrated and such?
Speaker 5 (02:33:46):
No, I'd love that you want our listeners to win.
Speaker 7 (02:33:48):
Oh I do.
Speaker 6 (02:33:48):
I giving him the necessary information. I have the right
answer to the question.
Speaker 5 (02:33:53):
So hopefully it's seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (02:33:56):
You like Jordan firing a shot after pushing off, you know,
what did you see that? It's not on seven seven nine.
If you can tell us the quarterback that Cole brought up,
that's super over it and set it for surgery later
this week that we mentioned last segment, and you can
have your choice of those pair.
Speaker 5 (02:34:13):
Of tickets today. The alternate ending.
Speaker 6 (02:34:19):
The alternate ending this is to choose your own adventure book.
Speaker 5 (02:34:22):
Somebody took a I and had the final play of
the Jazz Bulls from ninety eight. He missed, No, he
turned it?
Speaker 4 (02:34:32):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (02:34:33):
Was he was called for an offensive foul? And it's
Bob Costas saying it. Yeah, and an offensive foul has
been called. I can't do a Bob Now.
Speaker 6 (02:34:40):
Did he throw his headset down and leave immediately because
he couldn't take it?
Speaker 5 (02:34:45):
No, No, I know what you're saying. I did see that.
That's pretty good. You don't have to adjust. The video
stuff is so good, way too good? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (02:34:53):
Is gonna happen these postgame press conferences like the day
Aaron Boone got tossed out of the Yankee game against
the Astros.
Speaker 5 (02:34:59):
This weekend, they played that on the Mattaphi.
Speaker 6 (02:35:02):
Presser man Aaron Judge after they lost strength about how
I want to get traded away from here. It's too good,
too easy, too cool people.
Speaker 5 (02:35:11):
What was the name of the guy who worked for
Skynett that Linda Hamilton went over to his house and
shot him up in front of his family.
Speaker 6 (02:35:17):
The guy who they cast in the part because he
was so good at pretend death breathing.
Speaker 5 (02:35:25):
It sounded like an Alma's class or something. Hey man,
I know you're about to blow up, but could you
just not do the breathing thing before you let go
of the contraption that's gonna set this whole building a blaze.
It's pretty awful that movie. Do you like the liquid
metal thing?
Speaker 10 (02:35:41):
To do that?
Speaker 5 (02:35:42):
In nineteen ninety one or whatever it was, it was
so far ahead of its time. Among the reasons it
was great, well, but who would have thought that that
wouldn't even be the most famous movie that James Cameron made,
and the actual famous movie almost as good as Avatar.
That movie sucked.
Speaker 6 (02:36:00):
His name was Miles Dyson. What does she say to
the mom you might want to get him out of
the room to the kid because he's about to and
he says, let's go play with Wolfie.
Speaker 5 (02:36:13):
I don't know why Wex thinks it's so funny that
the name of the dog in Terminator Too is intentionally
screwed up. Mister dog's name you foss the pants? It dead, genius?
What was the real name? It was WOLFI? And what
what was the real name that he was supposed to say?
He gave him a fake name? Smart, very clever of
(02:36:33):
that T one thousand, I tell you Arnold. And by
the way, why they keep putting him in movies when
he got so much older? He's a terminator. He shouldn't
age at all. You could have used like CGI or
AI on his face.
Speaker 6 (02:36:46):
One obviously Terminator in eighty four to T two he
looked so different. Well, he'd had some work done, he'd
had a lot, he had Tom Brady level work done.
And did you close your boots and your motorcycle? So
good nice night for Sylvester and Arnold are favorites with
these accents.
Speaker 5 (02:37:05):
Unbelievable. You know on call of do you can be
the eighty four version of Terminator and he'll when he
makes is there a limit to what you can and
cannot be? Well, they have to. They have to come
up with it on the game like Bruce Willis as
John McClain was on there, Rambo was on. There are
both Beavis and butt Head available there right now. I
am Beavis when I play. Check me out. I'm not
(02:37:28):
giving my game or handle away.
Speaker 6 (02:37:30):
Do you wear a rock and roll concert T shirt?
Speaker 5 (02:37:33):
No? No, you personally not the character? No? When you play?
Do you really get a character wardrobe? For sitting in
myself in the theater and play some do some gaming?
Speaker 6 (02:37:44):
Do you need a wardrobe change? Everything's ready? What do
you need to wear when you play? What do you
what sports game? If you're playing a sport? What is
it grand theft?
Speaker 5 (02:37:55):
That's not sports? It is to me how many stole?
How many stolen vehicles? On this game? Usually Madden and
you are I? Usually the text I haven't played a
support game Stroud Jersey to game. I don't even have.
The last version of Madden I bought was probably five
years ago. Whatever, the one that that Joe beat me
on the fake awesome. I loved it.
Speaker 6 (02:38:19):
He played to the crowd. I was in the crowd.
Speaker 5 (02:38:21):
I loved it. You were the crowd. He knew his audience.
It was like two hours before everybody was supposed to
show up. He got there early to play PlayStation. I
forgot how we get oh so yeah, the terminator on
the game when you make a kill, he has lines
from the movie like he'll say I'll be back obviously,
(02:38:43):
but remember when he repeats what the guy says to
him after he asks him for his clothes. He repeats
the line back to him. What does he say? I
can't say it. It's like two of the three words
I can't say on an FCC regulated station. But it
says it in the game. And so of course Carson's
in there one day and it's way Max. That was
the real name. So Carson's in the other day and
(02:39:04):
I make a kill and he says it, and I'm like,
oh man, I'm a bad parent, but you're not. All right?
I do my best. All right, Astros take the second
game of this series and take the series.
Speaker 6 (02:39:16):
I think if they take tonight's game, they sweep the series.
I think they're definitely winning the game. Think of us
May he's gettable this year. He's had in his past
really great, unhittable, filthy stuff, just not really on display
as much recently. Astros all of a sudden, after playing
Boston for three games, their offense has been fine and
they've gotten a lot they hit two balls over the
(02:39:38):
fence in yesterday's game from two guys who aren't in
the everyday lineup, with Chaz hitting his first and aria
Is hitting his first as an Astro, they scored seven runs.
Speaker 5 (02:39:46):
Spencer Araghtty has started three games this year, correct one good,
too bad. His era is seven forty three. His era
after tonight will be less. You heard it from the
numbers guy first. It will be less.
Speaker 10 (02:39:59):
We will.
Speaker 6 (02:40:00):
We'll have some more from another Texans practice tomorrow, obviously,
some more from the ballgame this evening, which you catch
right here on both Space City Home Network and your
home for Astros Baseball, Sports Talk seven ninety Astros and
Red Sox coming your way with the Astros on Deck
Show next, and then Robert and Jeff we'll take you
through the ballgame tonight.
Speaker 5 (02:40:20):
We'll be back with you tomorrow at two o'clock
Speaker 2 (02:40:24):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety
