Speaker 1 (00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam raised.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
My girl.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Nolan voulted by the magnificent roller coaster ride.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
That is Houston sports.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Chill lage down for the only homegrown afternoon team is
talking your teams. Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the
A team.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Another Monday means another week of the A team coming
at you live from Houston, Texas.

Speaker 5 (00:57):
It's Sports TX seven to ninety. It'll be Space City
Home Network before you know it. Wex they were so close,
the Astros, they were so close to sweeping the Orioles
right out of their own gym. They got three out
of four, and they won the first three. But I
would have liked to have gotten that four games sweeper yesterday,
especially coming home with and you basically came out and

(01:20):
said it.

Speaker 6 (01:21):
I mean, I won't believe it until I see it.

Speaker 5 (01:24):
But the next time the Astros play a baseball game,
they're gonna have yord On Alvarez in the lineup. I
don't think there's anything keeping that from happening. And if anything,
maybe your theory about how they should have flown him
up for the last game of that Baltimore series could
have probably happened, and it would have been fine.

Speaker 6 (01:40):
He looks great.

Speaker 7 (01:41):
Yeah, I think it would have been something to strongly
consider to the point of doing it.

Speaker 6 (01:46):
But I understand why I've done it.

Speaker 7 (01:48):
They didn't four rehab games with multiple days off over
a six game stretch in Corpus for yord On Alvarez,
and there's no indication from anything that was said from
there from Dana Brown yesterday when he's on with the
Astros radio before the game, is he does each and
every Sunday and nothing evident from his one, two, three,
four doubles, his four hundred plus average is twelve hundred

(02:11):
plus ops.

Speaker 6 (02:12):
And the fact that he swung it.

Speaker 7 (02:14):
He probably took about forty some odd swings over the
four games, and there just didn't appear to be any
evidence of an issue. Was taken out of yesterday's game
before what could have been a final at bat at
some point. By playing him on Sunday, you're just basically saying,
we're just making doubly, doubly doubly sure. But once we
get to this point in the game, okay, enough, we're

(02:34):
not taking the one swing that does something. In Corpus.
If there's a one swing that does something that's gonna
happen now with the Astros. So yeah, I expect him
to be in the lineup on Tuesday against the worst
team in baseball, and hopefully the Astros can start putting
both of their outfits together at the same time. And
I don't mean their socks, underwear, shirts and hats. I

(02:56):
mean they're pitching and they're hitting hard to get them
both to match up the way that they did throughout
much of this season when they got out to the
best team in the division, were briefly the best team
in the American League based on records and so we count.
And then this weekend the bats came alive against the
same pitchers. The Astros saw four pitchers start games in

(03:19):
Baltimore this weekend. The only one they didn't see in
Houston was yesterday and Taylor Rodgers and he has been
awesome and he was again awesome. The other three pitchers
they all saw in Houston and did not have their
weight with any of them in Houston. And it all
completely changed with the three games they played Thursday, Friday,
and Saturday. Christian Walker homering Thursday and then Christian Walker
Homer Friday, and then Christian Walker Homer Saturday, all of

(03:41):
which were enormous. They got out to a five to
nothing lead in the first inning of one of those games,
but they also had to they were in save opportunities.
I'll just put it that way for much of this
weekend series because they couldn't keep the other team down.
Baltimore can hit, and Baltimore pretty much can't do anything else. Man,
do they like throwing the ball around and making it

(04:02):
easy on the other team. Unfortunately, the Astros were digging
into their bulpen non stop this weekend. I did get
a reasonably good start from Spence Aarraghetti. I would probably
want to take the reasonably out of it just because
he threw strikes. You can't win in the majors as
a pitcher in your life as a pitcher.

Speaker 6 (04:20):
I don't mean the game.

Speaker 7 (04:21):
I mean in your life as a pitcher if you
can't throw strikes or you're unwilling to throw strikes. And
the two pitchers that started prior to him are still
struggling with how to make sure that happens a lot
more often. Christian Javier, I think was thought that the
pitching coaches said, look, man, if you're not throwing twenty
five pitches in an inning, and we don't need you here,
because he managed to do that in his only two

(04:42):
innings of his start, and obviously Lansome Colors fell into
that same issue again.

Speaker 6 (04:47):
Rotation is what it is.

Speaker 7 (04:49):
They will open up this series with their aces on
top and Alexander in this series, So the worst team
in baseball against clearly the best three pitchers the Astros have,
and that's full recognition of how from ber Valdez has
been terrible this month of August. But all things considered,
we left you in a certain situation when we finished
up on Friday, and we come back in that situation

(05:11):
where the Astros have a two game lead in this division.
The series are dwindling, the home stands are dwindling. Obviously,
those three games with Seattle still sit out there. And again,
for every bit of cushion you have between them and you,
and if you just want to go out and beat
them when you play them, you can make it almost
impossible mathematically, no, but theoretically yes, for them to overcome

(05:35):
and win this division over you if you take care
of them and just continue to take caring the business
that you have throughout. That was a much more entertaining
weekend series against Baltimore than the one that preceded it
here in Houston.

Speaker 5 (05:47):
Oh and by the way, successful debut for Craig Kimbrel.

Speaker 7 (05:52):
Yeah, the all two rare Astros strike him out, throw
them out double play helped him when he gave up
the one hit, did get a pair of strikeouts two
whiffs during his sixteen pitch outing. Figured he would make
his debut in Baltimore and that it was his opening
weekend and everybody in the bullpen was needed. He finally
got in his one inning and it was a successful

(06:13):
one and hopefully there are more of those in the future.
There will still be some decisions to make. Obviously, if
Jordon Alvarez is playing for the Astros tomorrow, there will
be a roster move that is necessary. In light of
the fact that Bryce Matthews was issued a uniform but
never needed it over the weekend, I would imagine that
move could be the simplest one. And if what Dana
Brown had to say yesterday again with Robert that maybe

(06:34):
later this week the Sugarland Space Cowboys will have to
stitch up a uniform for Jake Myers, then maybe his
re emergence as an astro arrival back with the team
is also not too far off, which just a handful
of series left to go. Preseason came to a conclusion
in the NFL this weekend, including for the Texans their
last game this roady trip to Detroit. Again, their Thursday

(06:57):
work was much more important from a what's the twenty
twenty five season gonna look like? Their Saturday work was
much more important to the players trying to make sure
they're part of the Houston Texans twenty twenty five season.
There are a bunch of roster battles still I think
to be decided. Spoke with Tamiko Ryans earlier today and
as was the case a year ago, and I think
during the Ryan's Casario partnership, this is probably gonna be

(07:18):
pretty standard. There will be a bunch of announced team
releases today as teams have to get down to fifty
three by tomorrow afternoon. In at the beginning of our
number two of the A team that's three o'clock, the
Texans will take it up to We're not making any
official announcements. Maybe there will be a small, small number
of leaks, but we'll find out about it sometime tomorrow

(07:39):
afternoon what they've decided to do to manipulate a couple
of the situations they have with NFI and injured and
obviously getting down from the ninety to fifty three tomorrow afternoon.

Speaker 5 (07:53):
It's that Christmas Eve feeling time of year for not
only I mean, you got college football this weekend, and
they're some I was expecting that a little bit sooner.
There was some interesting tidbits, but that was kind of
like an appetizer for the main course this weekend because
Texas Ohio State is going to be delicious.

Speaker 7 (08:12):
Yeah, the weekend ahead of us is fantastic. And I
don't not gonna lie and act like I didn't watch
as much as I could. I watched the UNLV game
for per parts of it. I watched the Stanford Hawaii game.
Watched a lot of the thick, thick air in Dublin
between Iowa State and Kansas State. It did not present
for pretty football, and I don't want to take away
from the defenses. As the game war on, both teams

(08:34):
finally started to find a little bit of footing. But
if either one of those teams is the best that
the Big twelve has to offer, and they don't plan
on making major improvements and getting better throughout the season,
then it's going to be a pretty awful year in
the Big twelve. But I don't want to jump too
far too fast. Just one game out overseas trip and

(08:55):
I still finish. Iowa State opens the year with the
victory over Kansas State eight Thursday night. Right here in
town or right over on our sister station, Who's Radio
nine fifty KPRC, we have Cougar's Football SFA will be
in town over at TDECU for the Willie Fritz with
their new Football Operations Center and the enhancements to the stadium.

(09:17):
They'll all be in place for you to enjoy Cougar
football for another season. All sorts of coach speak coming
up this week, Press conference today, coaches radio shows over
the course of the week, and yes, an absolutely monster
weekend where it's it's possible that the best game isn't
the first of the two games we'll have here on
the family of networks, but rather the second of the
two games on Saturday, number one versus Number two, with

(09:41):
Ohio State hosting Texas, Clemson and LSU getting together later
in the evening, and also carrying LSU football here, I
will have that for you. If the national champion plays
this weekend on our iHeartRadio family of networks, I would
not be surprised one bit. LSU, Clemson, Texas, Ohio State.

(10:02):
I wouldn't even put that out there to people to
wager on saying I'll take those four teams, you take
the field, because that's unfair.

Speaker 6 (10:09):
I have too much of what could likely happen.

Speaker 7 (10:12):
Any one of those teams certainly could say could claim
to saying we're the best team in the country after
we go out and prove it.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
Yeah, I am looking forward to this weekend's games because
they're going to help me bridge the gap between the
long wait between preseason game finales in the NFL and
when games actually count for the Houston Texans. But yeah,
it's like Christmas Eve for the next week for college
football and two weeks for pro fans. I've always been

(10:41):
more of a pro guy, much to the chagrin of
Cole and maybe a little bit you, But I am
excited this year. I mean I'm cautiously excited about Texas
because I really do. I'm fascinated to see two things
this upcoming year, both from a college and pro standpoint.
I want to see if Arch is the dude, and
I want to see if the Texans can protect CJ. Stroud,

(11:03):
because if those two things happen, it could be some
special times here in this neck of the woods.

Speaker 6 (11:08):
So to speak. The nice of you to acknowledge the obvious.

Speaker 7 (11:10):
You want to see if Arch Manning can be that dude,
rather than just telling everybody today before he's done anything
or been on the field hardly at all, that he absolutely,
one hundred percent not only is the dude, but is
better than any of the dudes that have ever tried
to be the dude in the history of being a
dude in college football. It is hilarious to the point
where they're the expectation for meeting them, beating them, exceeding them.

(11:32):
This is a worthless conversation that I won't be able
to avoid for the next four months.

Speaker 6 (11:36):
It's going to be fun to watch the games.

Speaker 7 (11:38):
It's going to be fun to talk about what happens
in the games, much more so than listening to some
of the nonsense that's been talked about leading up to this,
and the same thing's happening in the NFL with different
pockets of this league. Obviously, the talk about Cleveland, to
talk about what's going on with the Cowboys and Michael
Parsons not seen today as they kind of shift into
game mode even though it's not game week yet, but

(12:00):
the games themselves will be here soon enough, and locking
in on the activities on the field in between the lines,
in between the whistles. I like that a little bit
more than all the other stuff. We gotta get there,
so it's all the other stuff until we do. Great
to be with you here back from the weekend. Feel
free to share with us what you enjoyed about it
and how excited you already hear us seven one three,

(12:22):
two one two five seven ninety. We'll be joined by
Sam Warren, who covers the Texans for the Houston Chronicle.
Coming up at four o'clock, we'll hear from Steve Sparks,
who made his weekly visit on Sports Talk seven ninety
as he does each and every Monday with Sean Salisbury show.
We'll hear from him at three point thirty. Of course,
all the goodies that Monday brings you here on the show,
including the good, the bad, the ugly, and at fifteen

(12:44):
minutes best of.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
X the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 6 (12:55):
It is the eighteam.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
It is Sports Talk seven ninety and AC with you
on a Monday edition of the program. Astros with a
night off. When they get back, they will have your
done back as well. Three out of four in Baltimore
over the weekend to kind of I guess turn around
what was looking like a disastrous road trip. Of course,

(13:19):
the Mariners did not cooperate with their with the scenario
that we needed them to. So here's the deal. After
their blowout win over the Age yesterday, the Rockies are
coming to town tomorrow and they have a well one
of their hottest teams in baseball is who the Mariners

(13:39):
are gonna be playing with the San Diego Padres as
the opponent. I don't normally demand this, but I feel
like you need to have a sweep over the Rockies
like they're they're so bad. As a matter of fact,
Wex You've talked about how much worse they are than
last year's White Sox this year, and I know it's baseball,
and I know we talk about this all the time.

(13:59):
You have to sweep them, especially with the fact that
the Padres can maybe do you some favors against the Mariners.

Speaker 7 (14:06):
Yeah, I don't really care what the Padres and Mariners do.
If you take care of your own business, nobody else
will either. You just don't have to. At some point,
you're going to fall into that, and it is inevitable.
And I don't want to be a blind to it,
be blind to it. I don't want to build graphics
that ignore it. And I sure know there's a scoreboard
out for the next ten games in a row over
at dyke In Park that will have all the out
of town scores on it, though they will be not

(14:28):
much to see considering how late they will be playing,
and the Astros will have already beaten the Rockies by
that point each of those evenings, and then afternoon get
an afternoon game on Thursday. Yeah, it's a bad baseball
team that's coming to town. This same bad baseball team
that will wrap things up with the Mariners later this season.
The second to last series of the Rockies season is

(14:50):
against the Mariners in Seattle, So you can take care
of them all you want here, knowing that there's a
possibility that Seattle can do the same A little bit
later Colorado comes in here. I mean They've won one
out of their last five of four game losing streak.
They have scored once in their last three games combined,
so we'll see if the Astros can try to keep
them down. The Pittsburgh Pirates just held them to one

(15:13):
run in their three game series this past weekend. They
can continue this road trip, and if they only score
one more time this road trip, the Astros will complete
the six game sweep of the Rockies.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (15:26):
I don't demand it either, but you're right it absolutely
should happen. They don't throw pitchers who get guys out,
either in Colorado or anywhere else. They don't have guys
that get a lot of offense going certainly not on
the road. A little bit more at home. I mean,
they did just beat the Dodgers last week twice in
a four game series in Colorado. But again, they scored
twenty one runs in four games against the Dodgers in Colorado,

(15:48):
scored twenty two runs in four games against Arizona in Colorado.
Then they went on the road and scored one time
in twenty seven innings. That's the team the Astros hopefully
welcome to Dyke and Park, and again it should be
Hunter Brown from ber Valdez, Jason Alexander going in the
evening games Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by the afternoon game
on Thursday. That's what good baseball teams would do. And

(16:12):
even though baseball isn't like the other sports, if this
were football, we wouldn't even be talking about it. Honestly,
if this were basketball, three in a row, which never
happens in basketball and in this short period, be a
little bit more difficult, but that's what you get in
the postseason. If the Rockets were playing the who do
you think is the worst team in the NBA?

Speaker 6 (16:32):
In the NBA?

Speaker 7 (16:34):
Ah, geez, how about the Wizards? Okay, if the Rockets
were playing the Wizards three straight games in the postseason,
which is the only time you would face a team
three consecutive times, I would feel pretty good about demanding
a Rocket sweep and expecting a Rocket sweep, especially because
in the playoffs there's a lot on the line, and
for the Astros with only a handful of games and

(16:54):
series left, there is a lot on the line, so
I think that would be reasonable. Baseball is weird, and
when Hunter Brown has, you know, a shutout going into
the seventh inning and the Astros are up one nothing
and somebody hits the ball three hundred and nine and
a half feet into the Crawford boxes opposite field, and
all of a sudden, the game's tied up or something
weird happens, because it only does in baseball, then yeah,

(17:17):
maybe it doesn't happen. But a lineup, which I suggested
earlier today on the X platform, I'm not sure what
it is that Joespott will trot out there, and I
don't think whatever he trots out there tomorrow is definitely
what you're going to see against right handing pitching the
rest of the way. And not just because Jake Myers
probably comes back and that would change it. I just
mean everyone is very, very convinced that the moment yard

(17:40):
On Alvarez is back in this lineup, you should expect
the same yard On Alvarez, that's been the most feared
left handed hitter that currently exists in the American League,
and I don't deny that that's what I would expect also,
but it doesn't necessarily mean I would put him in
the number two spot tomorrow, or maybe even the number
three spot. A long term would bat him two or

(18:00):
three almost definitively, but I could see a lineup tomorrow
that has him batting behind Paynya, Correa and Altuve and
probably not in left field, probably having altuvea in left
field at home with Hunter Brown on the mount and
figure out the rest. Give you opportunity against a right
hander to see multiple left handed bats in the lineup. Hey,

(18:21):
sus Sanchez coming off of a nice series over the
weekend in Baltimore, including a five hit game, He's gonna
be in the lineup. I would presume. Maybe it's a
day off for Cam Smith. If you want another left
handed bat, you can put Jacob Melton in the lineup,
like good defense in the expansive center field of dyk
In Park. But you got a lot of options, and
I'm not tied to anything. But it was interesting to

(18:42):
see how some people responded to the suggestion that you
bring yord On Alvarez back. He's the DH tomorrow and
eat bats not first, second, or third, but rather fourth.
And it's not because I think some people think I'm
old or I'm living in the past, where oh yeah,
he's the biggest power hitter on the team, bats clean up.
Why wouldn't he back cleanup? Because it's not nineteen eighty five.

Speaker 6 (19:04):
I know that.

Speaker 7 (19:04):
I'm well aware of that. I'm fully aware of what
things are these days. Aaron Judge, he doesn't back clean up,
never bats clean up. Joe he Otani leads off. I
recognize that fully, but suggesting that maybe in this first
game back, that's not necessarily where Joe. We'll put yard
On Alvarez up at or near at the top of

(19:25):
the order.

Speaker 8 (19:26):
Well.

Speaker 5 (19:27):
Dana Brown, as you mentioned, joining the Astros Radio Network
yesterday for his weekly visit, talked first about the fact
that the team is slugging again, which is a far
cry from what it was doing you now two series
ago when they were in Detroit and just things were
just not going well more often than not in that series.

Speaker 9 (19:49):
Very happy with the way the offense is swinging the bats.
I said on my radio show on Wednesday that if
these guys I felt like they were going to really
turn the corner and start hitting, and I said, if
they do, I would consider myself a profit. So now
it's just good to see that, you know, these guys
are swinging a bat. I know it was just a
matter of time, and they're having good quality at bats.

(20:12):
We're scoring runs. We're slugging, which is really good to see.
And you know, it's just good to see the presence
of Korea in this lineup. And I think he's really
getting other guys the energy, you know, like Walker. Walker's
been really good and so all of that's really good
to see. I hope we continue with today and get
this this sweep. It'd be real nice.

Speaker 5 (20:34):
Well, they didn't get to sweep, but they can get
one against Colorado if, for example, Jordon in that fourth
spot or wherever they put him and the rest of
the lineup does what we think he will help them do.
But Jordon and later Jake Myers, just a quick update
on the two latest returnees from the injured list for

(20:54):
the Astros.

Speaker 6 (20:55):
Yeah, good chance.

Speaker 9 (20:56):
Let's see, you know, how he does today, how he
feels on Monday, and if all goes well, there's a
chance that we could see him in that Colorado series
for sure. And then you know with Myers, you know, look,
Myers has got a chance to get on the rehab
assignment sometimes toward the end of this upcoming week, you know,
in sugar Land. So he's coming along nicely as well.

(21:19):
So it looks like we're starting to get all of
our guys back. You know, we lost a couple guys
out of the bullpen, you know, so that hurts a
little bit. But it looks like we're starting to get
our hitters back, so hopefully we can get on all cylinders,
keep swinging the bats and go on a little run here.
That's what we're expected to do, and that's what we're
excited about.

Speaker 6 (21:38):
Please sweep Colorado, That's all I'm asking.

Speaker 7 (21:41):
We lost a couple of guys in the bullpen. That
hurts a little bit. Yeah, hurts a little bit. He
lost Bennett's Sussa and you lost Josh Hater. Quite obviously.
We might see Bennett suss a little bit later this season,
very unlikely that you see Josh Hater. And sugar Land
is back home for six starting on Tuesday when Albert
Herky comes to town. So I would expect, at least

(22:03):
according to Dana Brown, that if things continue progressing the
way they have through the hitting and throwing progression and
running progression, basically that Jake Myers has been on trying
to recover from the calf strain, that maybe he is
a weekend this series away if he's able to get
out on the field in sugar Land at some point
this weekend. Hopefully that's two games at least, maybe with
a day off in between. They obviously will not play

(22:24):
on Monday, they never do. Maybe there's an opportunity during
this I would hope, during this homestand which does last
ten games, that he could also make an appearance. In
kind of lost sight of it because of the magnitude
of some of the other injuries and just other things
happening with this team, and obviously the trade deadline acquisitions.
But I don't even want to guess what the Astros

(22:46):
production out of their center field spot has been offensively
since Jake Myers has not been out there, and they've
obviously taken a step back defensively in addition to that,
it's a pretty big absence shadowed by some other absences.
But you didn't know Jake Marers is going to be really,
really helpful to your offense this year, and he was,

(23:07):
and you've missed him.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
Was there any better option for Chaz yesterday when they
hit him or when they batt at him late in
the game and you were trying to come back from
that one run deficit.

Speaker 7 (23:16):
I was trying to cam Smith. I's been arguably the
worst hitter in baseball for the last six weeks.

Speaker 6 (23:23):
Why I said better option, That's why I mean.

Speaker 7 (23:25):
Bryce Matthews could make his first at bat since he's
been recalled.

Speaker 5 (23:28):
I just hated it because I knew that was an
automatic one of the three out you were down to.

Speaker 6 (23:34):
That's why he hit for those very reasons. This is
what I mean.

Speaker 7 (23:38):
I'm not saying they're playing with a fully space cowboyish group,
but the guys that they are playing on whoever the
center field is on a everyday basis, it's two different players.
It's Jacob Melton and Chas McCormick. They're having miserable major
league offensive seasons, and with Tremmell down well, those they're
getting almost every single at baton center field, and Dubon

(23:59):
has played in different spots, but overall they're running out
of how many other guys do we have?

Speaker 6 (24:05):
Most days?

Speaker 7 (24:06):
Krotene has been available off the bench here recently, which
has been huge, and he absolutely raked in Baltimore this
weekend with five hits and nine at bats and six RBHI.

Speaker 5 (24:15):
Yeah, I wish he would have cleaned the bases, but
getting that run home absolutely put them to put them
in a position to win. I also am not going
to complain too much about the very last strikeout call
of the game being just off the plate, considering the
amount of guys they left on base before.

Speaker 7 (24:33):
Well, it just goes to show you why it's not
one sided. It's not We're not biased, we're not taking advent.
I mean, Josh Hayder struck a guy out on a pitch,
it's not a strike and ended a game, got him
a save, got a huge win for the Astros. It
shouldn't happen because the borderline calls. Fine, we get it,
they're hard, and yeah, they can be corrected, but I'm
not gonna I'm not up in arms about it. I
don't expect humans to be perfect. I know we have

(24:54):
the ability to make them much closer to perfect. But yeah,
the call that's not even close. That can't That cannot
be a strike.

Speaker 6 (25:00):
It can't be. It looks like you can't allow that
to home.

Speaker 7 (25:03):
Sort of looked like it, and it does happen in
other parts of the game, but specifically there, everyone is
on edge and everyone's bringing their best to the table.
The closer the Astros All Star shortstop but not the
guy behind the plate who wanted to get his meal
in before his flight.

Speaker 5 (25:18):
I guess that's what it looked like. All right, best
of 's coming up next like it always does this
time of day. That is straight ahead.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 6 (25:32):
Did you all see this.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
Putting out with the five and sim posts?

Speaker 7 (25:36):
Okay, four hundred people were arrested for things that they
said on social media.

Speaker 10 (25:40):
History repeats itself type bang, you'll succeed. Never doubt that
you're the one to puss no one the league. You're
the best. Nothing's gonna ever top you know, you're the
best of X posting ever seen. Day you o the
best of it, breaking the entire Internet.

Speaker 7 (26:10):
It is time for the best of social media X
just as our guinea pig and the song for parody purposes.
But whatever's out there on social media, and there's lots
of it all moments of every single day, we find it.
You guys help us sometimes and we appreciate that you
know where to find us on social media at Adam Klenn,
at mister Cole Thompson or at Adam Jay Wexler, and

(26:30):
many of you have or some of the things we've
personally posted or the station is posted, or otherwise, but
we go back to college football for the first entry
of the day. On best of X go to our
college football friends who are nice enough to post this
statement from Mark and Anthony Johnson or earlier today from

(26:53):
over the weekend and the two of them. Mark and
Anthony Johnson said, we sincerely apologize for our actions following
yesterday's football game in Ireland.

Speaker 6 (27:01):
So the statement was issued on Sunday.

Speaker 7 (27:03):
Senseless bickering escalated into an unnecessary fight. We've resolved our
differences and take full responsibility for our actions. We've apologized
to our immediate and extended family and abstend our apologies
to Kansas State University it's alumni and fans. We regret
this incident and have learned from it and are committed
to ensuring it doesn't happen again. Please accept our deepest apologies.

(27:25):
You may ask huh Mark Johnson Anthony Johnson could be
anybody cry giving me more common names?

Speaker 6 (27:33):
Why don't you WEX?

Speaker 7 (27:34):
Well, they are common, but what they did together and
to each other very uncommon. I'll go to College Transfer
Portal to say what I need to say next. If
you're confused, and they added the video that helps explain
everything to everybody with the caption Can't State quarterback Avery
Johnson's father caught fighting after their loss in Ireland with

(27:56):
his other son, So Mark and Anthony Johnson are the
father and brother of Kansas State quarterback. In Dublin, Kansas
State playing Iowa State. Kansas State came out on the
losing end. Avery Johnson had a typically statfield day, several
hundred yards passing, some more rushing yards, a little bit
of a slow start but obviously on the wrong end

(28:18):
of it when it came to pass. But video captured
after the game, and I know you'll find this hard
to believe those of you know anything about Ireland. Not
only were they caught fighting after the game outside of
the game, but in the massive puddles in the streets,
because that's the kind of weather that it's been like
the entire week leading up to the game, the morning
leading up to game, and throughout the game. They're fighting

(28:40):
in the streets full of puddles everywhere. And yes, this
is the father and brother of the quarterback of one
of the two football teams that were fighting with each other.
Some Kansas State fans tried to pull them apart. There's
a lot of grappling in the videos. There were some
punches thrown. I don't know that they were landed, but
it did bring plenty of people to the comments section.

(29:01):
Tim says reminds me of the time a few years
back my son thought he was a tough guy because
he turned twenty one, who was hitting the weights. Had
to put him in his place at a Marlins game
and remind him, wo's the boss of this family differences.

Speaker 6 (29:14):
I'd never apologize for that never.

Speaker 5 (29:18):
You know, the quarterback in question here, I actually kind
of feel bad for him because of course he didn't
do anything.

Speaker 6 (29:26):
He played football, and these two idiots because that's what
they are.

Speaker 5 (29:32):
I mean, do they have too much? What's the is
Guinness the Irish beer over there? That's like there's plenty
of options that could be among them.

Speaker 6 (29:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (29:39):
I mean, I hate to stereotype. I'm almost p people
at football games fighting. You think it's because alcohol was.

Speaker 6 (29:47):
Involved, see, but I can't.

Speaker 7 (29:50):
I think that's a reason for a real, very reasonable
expectation because it happens all. I mean, we brought college
football just came back and this weekend between the time
we left often the time we're back here with you
on Sunday are a bunch of other preseason games. If
I wanted to tell you there's five fight videos from
the games this weekend, and there weren't even that many
games this weekend, you'd say, yeah, I've seen them already. Yeah,

(30:10):
I know they're there because they played games. It happens
all the time.

Speaker 4 (30:14):
Now.

Speaker 7 (30:14):
In this particular fight, we did have somebody come up
with a pole question. The results are already in, but
you got winning father or the son? Now, I don't
know if you've seen the video based on their respective statures.

Speaker 6 (30:25):
Seen clips, wasn't the Sun the one on the bottom
for the most part.

Speaker 7 (30:30):
If it were me grading the grappling, I would say
the Sun was winning. I mean, you could have form
your own opinion. And we only caught parts of the altercation.
Sixty five percenter with the dad, how about everybody loses,
That's right, State says, bring good fist fighting and brawling back.
Love the passion, Yes, love the passion. Speaking of Taylor, says,

(30:53):
I definitely would have just said sorry to Ireland and
k State nation. We were hammered and we take our
football seriously. Yeah, even if that had been their statement.
Would you have even blamed them?

Speaker 6 (31:04):
Wade says, never apologize, It just keeps it in the
news cycle. That's true.

Speaker 7 (31:08):
And here we are two days later that this fight
was Saturday. Yep, and here we are on a Monday.

Speaker 6 (31:14):
But it's true.

Speaker 7 (31:15):
Big Terp says it's okay to fight in Ireland. Mark
says they apologized to move on, which we will do
as soon as best of X's over. I doubt we
will reference it later this year unless we get a
second family fight during this twenty twenty five college football season.

Speaker 5 (31:30):
I know that there's this is going to be sounding
totally ridiculous for a number of reasons.

Speaker 6 (31:34):
Sure, this was a game that counted.

Speaker 5 (31:37):
All the college football games count, right, So the reason
I bring that up, if you are a degenerate or
better yet, a loser that finds a way to get
into a fight at a NFL preseason game, that's like
the lowest of low, not because the game doesn't count,
but kind of.

Speaker 6 (31:56):
Well, you're not in a preseason game.

Speaker 7 (31:58):
The element of what would maybe cause a fight that
has nothing to do with alcohol isn't there because the
element that creates fights that doesn't necessarily have to do
with alcohol is rivalries and fans in other states.

Speaker 6 (32:09):
I mean, this is a preseason NFL game.

Speaker 7 (32:10):
If that's what we're talking about, there's nothing on the line.

Speaker 6 (32:16):
Then you just really are that big of a loser.
That's why the Texans played this weekend.

Speaker 7 (32:20):
They were on the road in Detroit and Graham Martz
and Keaton Slows were the only Texans to throw the football.
Kyle and Hendon Hooker threw the pill for Detroit. If
you're in the stands as a Lions fan and you're
in the stands as a Texans fan, and anything that
happened on the field non alcohol related in the stands,
but anything that happened on the field between two complete

(32:40):
non rivals with nothing but backups created I'm so mad.

Speaker 6 (32:44):
I want to punch this person. That'd be something. It
would absolutely be something. Fortunately that I don't know of
any but doesn't mean there was weren't some altercations.

Speaker 7 (32:55):
If not for social media, if there's a real chance,
we would not have had footage of this fight, nor
the statement from a random football family about it.

Speaker 5 (33:04):
College football underway officially. Now that families are fighting each other,
we'll get back to the pro side. Of things when
we come back, talk a little bit about what we
saw on Saturday. Plus, is the head coach of the
Texans going to arm wrestle the general manager of the Texans.

Speaker 6 (33:19):
You'll hear from one of them next.

Speaker 3 (33:26):
The A ten on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (33:40):
It is the A team Sports Talks seven ninety simulcast
beginning at the top of the hour on Space City
Home network.

Speaker 6 (33:47):
The Texans got together with the Lions. Well, hang on,
let me rephrase that.

Speaker 5 (33:52):
The Texans backups and the Lions backups got together on
Saturday afternoon in a very entertaining game.

Speaker 7 (33:58):
It was a very one sided which can be very entertaining.
It was good for if you really believe that the
third quarterback battle came down to this game per se.
You know, Graham Mertz got an all three games. Same
for Keiden Slovas. Mertz was disastrous in the opening game
of the preseason, and he was spectacular in the third
game of the preseason. I would have to assume the

(34:19):
only reason they drafted him is because they thought his
future was brighter than Keten Slovas at some bar to pass,
but I would assume that's what they saw in Saturday's game.
I don't think there's any chance all four of the
quarterbacks that are currently rostered by the Texans will still
be rostered by the Texans after a Wednesday. I guess
it's possible with the practice squad they could do something creative,

(34:41):
but I'm not sure. Again, the soundness of drafting Graham
Mertz at all is a bit much because you just
threw that pick away. Graham Mertz probably or a player
like him would have been available after the draft. But
if you like him, are you just gonna release him?
And anybody else who wants him to picks him up,
and now you're scrambling for who your third quarterback is,

(35:01):
or do you like him enough and don't want to
go through that that you have to keep him on
the roster. And I would hope they don't. I would
hope one of the two of them, and maybe that's
what they're just looking at. Will we release them both
and come Wednesday afternoon, one of the two of them
is back on the practice squad and we go into
games with two active quarterbacks, just like many many teams
will do that aren't Cleveland and didn't need to see

(35:21):
Davis Mills didn't need to see CJ. Stroud, didn't he
see need to see the Texans front line, offensive line,
tight ends or receivers. You did see Damian Pierce for
the first time in preseason football. You did see Christian
Harris for the first time in preseason football, for good
reason for the plan that they had in place for
those two individuals to get themselves ready for the opening

(35:43):
game of the season, and by all accounts from a
health standpoint, they both are ready. And in the backfield
that probably matters a great deal because I doubt Joe
Mixon will be active for Game one for the Texans,
but Nick Chubb, Damian Pierce, Dariagon Bowalle, Rookie Woody Marks,
maybe a fifth running back if you think Juwar Jordan
makes the team, and probably one full back. I think

(36:05):
British Brooks may have the advantage over Johnson right now,
but we shall see. And obviously Harris is a huge
part of this defense when healthy, and I think if
they have a healthy speed Harris Toatoa and Aziz el Shair,
who had a minor injury that shouldn't even impact him
from practicing probably the next week, that's a pretty good
linebacking group. And if I can tell you they have

(36:26):
a pretty good linebacking group with an absolutely elite secondary
and a bone crushingly spectacular front seven or front four.
That sounds like a pretty good defense.

Speaker 11 (36:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (36:37):
No, I'm ecstatic about where this unit could be, fully
expecting it to be a top five unit, fully expecting
it to in some ways win them games this year,
and not from the standpoint of scoring obviously, although I
do expect.

Speaker 6 (36:52):
Them to do that.

Speaker 5 (36:52):
I mean, they did it in the postseason, but you know,
if this is a if it's a close game and
the opponent's dry late, I'm almost expecting a game winning
interception or something of that nature from that defense.

Speaker 7 (37:07):
They'll go out there trying to do that. They'll go
out there trying to disrupt. I think they're really stacked
depth wise also, which is huge for a defense. It's
huge for any team at any position. But you know,
the backups they will have to spell Anderson and Hunter,
I believe in a lot. I think Horton's probably five,
with Barnett and Taylor at four and three as in
the depth one, two, three, four five similarly on the interior,

(37:31):
with Settle and Rankins getting most of the work. During
preseason and training camp because they were healthy. But now
you've got Mario Edwards Junior, you've got fully fought Acasi.

Speaker 6 (37:39):
I think very very.

Speaker 7 (37:40):
Underrated is what TOYII does for this team. And you
still could get more players back from a health standpoint
if Denico Autry is at some point a part of
that group.

Speaker 6 (37:49):
So they're perfectly well set there.

Speaker 7 (37:52):
You know, we had Nick Casario on not too long ago,
and you know I've talked to him many times throughout
the years about roster makeup and roster decisions. We've talked
to Dimiko Ryans in his three years. This will be
year three of working together with Nick Cassario and that
very thing. So obviously today when we were on a
zoom call with Demiko his availability for today, that idea

(38:12):
of how they come to a conclusion on putting together
those fifty three the roster decisions, saying, you know, how
many of these guys which one of these two guys
I want this guy, you want that guy? How do
they sometimes decide if they're at an impasse or if
I think one thing and you think another, Dimiko, how
how do you guys kind of break the tie?

Speaker 6 (38:34):
And then he went into a serious answer.

Speaker 4 (38:36):
No way.

Speaker 6 (38:37):
Dimiko gave a serious answer.

Speaker 7 (38:39):
He presented it in a way that he actually could
have stopped right there, and he said.

Speaker 6 (38:44):
We are wrestle like that.

Speaker 5 (38:45):
Even though everybody, and I mean everybody would put their
money on Demiko, well not give him.

Speaker 6 (38:51):
Really, no, really, seriously, he said Nick would get him.
He's being nice. He's very nice. I know he's nice.
He's being nice though.

Speaker 7 (39:01):
Yeah, he gave his full commentary on it, and obviously
we know what that would be like. But he said
he said Nick could probably take him a huge advantage,
and Demiko lost on purpose like maybe a dad would
to his young son. But otherwise, no, it doesn't mean
Nick's week. Remember he's not Demiko.

Speaker 5 (39:18):
Remember in the amazing cinematic experience that was over the top.

Speaker 6 (39:22):
I remember it. It was amazing. It was an experience.

Speaker 5 (39:24):
I know he put his hat on backwards and that
supposedly gave him superpowers, but there's no way he would
have really beat some of those guys he faced off
against that. I would actually not co sign because some
guys look not as strong as they are.

Speaker 7 (39:40):
What about Sly and his really awesome arm wrestling guns
and leverage, the way he's built the way he can
lock in with his other hand on the handle, yeah
and everything.

Speaker 6 (39:54):
I don't think that handle. Yeah, I mean the other guys.

Speaker 7 (39:57):
Were more of the I got to where I am
today in the world of arm wrestling by drinking fifty
beers at a time.

Speaker 6 (40:03):
But he was he was not that, but he was
like half the size show those guys. His arms weren't.

Speaker 11 (40:10):
No.

Speaker 5 (40:10):
I know, it's arm wrestling, I'm aware, but there's some
guys that look like absolute just pud and they're freakishly strong.
So all right, that's enough of that. We will get
back to being on task like we do Texans astros.
Who knows, maybe even a little rockets. But it's all
coming up in the three o'clock hour.

Speaker 3 (40:31):
Next the A teen on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (40:40):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Team's very.

Speaker 3 (40:47):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the A Team.

Speaker 5 (40:56):
Welcome into our number two, our number one on Space
City Home network if you're watching, but it is the
A Team. Sports SOX seven ninety XAC with you on
a Monday after the college football season got underway. By
the way, I promise I did not know this when
I said what I said in our number one, the
whole Avery Johnson's dad and brother fighting each other thing.

Speaker 6 (41:20):
What did you not know? I thought, I explained at all.
I gave you all the deats. Well, there's video that
they actually that the older brother was double fisting Guinness.
Did you say that part? No, that's the part that
I didn't think we had gone over. I just made
it as a joke. I did not know this.

Speaker 7 (41:36):
Crazy that as I reacted to it, then I'll react
to it now. Crazy in that a football fight would
include alcohol, but it's not. Would you think such a thing.
That's very presumptuous of you. It's not just alcohol, it's
Guinness in Ireland. Yeah, that was a zero part to me.

Speaker 6 (41:51):
I'm really anything.

Speaker 7 (41:55):
They can be served at any stadium in any part
of the country, the world, anywhere else, and it, like
I said, it doesn't really matter.

Speaker 6 (42:02):
All right.

Speaker 5 (42:02):
You want to start the show with the televised version
of the show with breaking news, Sure, let's hear some breaking.

Speaker 12 (42:10):
JI do.

Speaker 6 (42:11):
What's crazy about this? It's not happened yet, technically.

Speaker 5 (42:15):
The Houston Texans just tweeted the following with the caption
and update on running back Joe Mixon and take graphic
that says tomorrow, at three pm Central Standard time, we
will officially move running back Joe Mixon from the active
slash non football injury list to the reserve slash non
football injury list. Players placed on the reserve non football

(42:38):
injury list may begin to practice and play after the
club's fourth game of the regular season. We will provide
further updates at an appropriate time. Which is basically exactly
what you said off air to one of our coworkers
during a commercial break.

Speaker 7 (42:50):
Yeah, I've had a lot of conversations with people over
there since the offseason began, and he did not participate
in those offseason workouts and obviously throughout training camp and
even here today, both before, during, and in between parts
of the show today.

Speaker 6 (43:03):
That is exactly what I said.

Speaker 7 (43:05):
When the Texans travel to Baltimore, that's week five, that's
Game five, that's the first possible Joe Mixon game, And
now the Texans have just confirmed it. That was just
my belief on where I thought he was from a
recovery standpoint, and concern about you having a player on
the active roster that you can't use for a week
or two or three, Why not just make it the

(43:26):
full four, especially if you don't really think there's much
of a chance he's ready for weeks one or two.
But they'll officially move him from the PUP list pre
season to as you said, the reserve I said pup
I mean NFI list. He'll go to the reserve non
FI list, which opens the window for him to practice
and then play after the fourth game of the regular season.

(43:49):
But the ankle injury that clearly had some sort of
complications or some difficulty in recovery, or maybe something that
made it worse or just didn't have it recovering whey
or something else happened, did have And that's why the
first person to carry the football this year for the Texans,
as we thought, will not be Joe Mixon, probably will
be Nick Chubb, but not a guarantee. He could start,

(44:11):
and you could come out throwing, You could run a reverse,
and Jalen Nole could be the first guy to carry
the football. Damian Pierce, for all I know, could carry it.
Dari on third and long on a draw could be
the first guy to carry it. But they ended last
year with what clearly was a bell cow at running
back in his one season with the Texans and they
will start his second year with somebody else or else's

(44:34):
trying to get things going. From a run game standpoint,
everything about how they've schemed up the run here in
the preseason, granted against the competition they were playing against.
I was pretty enthusiastic about how they're able to run
the football, what they're trying to do up front. They're
dictating these plays like, well, we've never seen it before
while Domiko has been head coach. We'll see if it

(44:54):
plays out that way against the Rams in week one,
the Bucks in Week two, the ja and Titans in
week three and four, none of which we'll see Joe Mixon.

Speaker 5 (45:04):
Yeah, well, you kind of stole my thunder with that
last little bit there, because I was going to ask
you guys, forget the other team's health, like, for example,
Matthew Stafford in the first week, and I know that's
a big forget, but you know, just stick to the
Texans here. If fully healthy, Joe Mixon's ready to go.
What were you thinking their record would have been in
the first four weeks. Anyways, at the Rams home for

(45:25):
the Bucks, at the Jags home for the Titans.

Speaker 7 (45:27):
I'll start by saying his presence doesn't change my opinion
on the outcome of any of those games or any
others throughout the season. Why because I think if you
can run the ball, you can run the ball, And
if they do what they're supposed to claim they're going
to be able to do this year, then they'll be
able to run the ball and run the ball effectively enough.
And I don't regard Mixon as a game changer. He's

(45:50):
clearly plus he's top half of the league, but if
you really ran down the list of game changing running
backs from start to finish, she wouldn't probably place to
particularly now. If there's a massive drop off between Joe
Mixon and what they have, which I'm not expecting, then
I'll be totally wrong. But he's not gonna I don't
think his running ability or pass catching ability, both of

(46:10):
which are good, would have been the difference maker between
they were winning and losing on the road in LA
or Jacksonville, or winning and losing at home against Tampa
or Tennessee, especially since I think all of the players
they will use instead can do at least as well,
if not better, as pass blockers, which probably matters for
this year's team at least early in the season, because

(46:32):
I think they're going to be a very very different
team if they're healthy later in the year up front
than they are for these first few weeks. What he
said basically, I mean, for me, I think they were
going to go three and one with or without Joe
Mixon in the backfield.

Speaker 5 (46:45):
Well, I think And I'm not trying to disagree with you, guys,
just to disagree. And I realized that.

Speaker 6 (46:51):
Well, you're a big Joe Mixon guy, you should.

Speaker 5 (46:53):
Well, I'm a big Joe Mixon was a huge part
of what they were doing to be successful at the
big of the early part of last season.

Speaker 6 (46:59):
Guy, that's a really long sentence, by the way, that's
the kind of guy you are. But I mean put
that on a teach. And he went down with that injury.
There was a drop off in their offense last year.

Speaker 5 (47:09):
Now you didn't have the same receivers, and I mean
Nicocollins is that is the That is the guy. Okay,
But after that, you know, Stefan Diggs was there, Tank
Dell was there. Tank Dell's still here, by the way,
he's just not playing obviously, But it's a different look.
I'm not saying that you can't be successful without him.

(47:30):
But I also do think there is a drop off
from a healthy Joe Mixon and whatever else you have
which does include Nick Chubb.

Speaker 7 (47:37):
Yeah, it remains to be seen because obviously we haven't
seen Nick Kyley's offense, we haven't seen Cole popovich technique teaching,
we haven't seen Tay Ercery and the other major changes
they've made on the offensive line, and Nick Chubb has
zero carries as a Texan. None of those things have
been seen, and I don't want to base too much
on what was seen at either a training camp or
off season practice, or certainly in the five carries that

(47:58):
Nick Chubb had during theseason, or anybody else for that matter.
But I don't know that they're going to be missing
a lot of what. Like I said, I think I
explained it well the first time through. I don't want
to dismiss his value to this team, and they can
be exceptional potentially if he's healthy, and Nick's healthy and
capable and whomever else. Because when the offseason began or

(48:19):
the training camp began, and I wasn't certain on where
Joe Mixon's health would take him, I thought there was
a real chance that Damian Pierce was basically battling for
a roster spot. Well he's not anymore because they obviously
have a roster spot. If Joe Mixon's not going to
be assuming that. I didn't know where Woody Marx would
fit into this, and I know he can be a
part of their passing game if they want know where
Dares fit is. He's still probably going to be looked

(48:41):
at as a guy who will see the field in
third down situations. I'm just not sure how they'll end
up deploying them. Do we view the Rams or the
Bucks or Jacksonville or Tennessee as a team that's going
to overwhelm the Texans up front?

Speaker 11 (48:57):
Now?

Speaker 7 (48:58):
I think their Texans are trying to do the things
they're doing running the football because it helps them, like
the run dictates the pass. I kind of got bored
with that comment the last five years in the NFL,
so I don't find it as a blanket statement all
that true anymore. But I think it will be definitely
true for this team. It will be the complete opposite
for the Cowboys. They're not gonna run the ball at

(49:19):
all this year. They're not gonna be capable of it,
they don't have the backfield for it, and they might
not have the blocking for it. Dak Prescott's gonna throw
a billion passes this year, and oh and teams know that,
by the way, And teams know that the Texans want
to help their pass protection by not telling the defense
come get our quarterback all the time, by hopefully being
able to run on first and or second down, or

(49:40):
at least produce third downs that are third and four,
third and five instead of the always popular twenty twenty
four version third and nine, third and eleven or thirty
eight turned into third and thirteen because somebody said, I'm
gonna jump early here and say we get a head start.
I'm blocking a false start.

Speaker 6 (49:58):
You brought Oh boy, you brought up a good point.

Speaker 5 (50:01):
Like that's not a small thing, just like I think
it's no small thing that you know, Joe Mixon to
Nick Chubb or whoever else is back there.

Speaker 6 (50:10):
Nick Hayley hasn't called to play yet, not one that
counts anyway.

Speaker 5 (50:14):
And that was probably as much a part of your
lack of success on offense, especially as the injuries piled up.
I mean, you can blame a lot of that on
injuries and they should have frankly, but there were some
things that it was just like, come on, like adjust
do something.

Speaker 7 (50:32):
Yeah, last year, the three games that Mixon missed completely,
the Texans won two of them. One of them was
against They won against Jacksonville and Buffalo and Houston, and
they got creamed in Minnesota, and that game in Minnesota
from a running perspective, the first game without mixing fully,
he was hurt the week before against Chicago.

Speaker 6 (50:49):
Also Week five. Was it not what the Minnesota game
last year? It was Week three?

Speaker 11 (50:54):
Oh it was.

Speaker 7 (50:55):
Yeah, he got hurt in the home opener against Chicagogo
and then missed three four five, three four and five
games three four and five.

Speaker 6 (51:02):
I was screwed up with my schedule.

Speaker 7 (51:03):
They couldn't they couldn't run the ball at all against Minnesota,
and then the game dictated exactly what I'm talking about.
Then they couldn't afford to run the ball, and everybody
knew they were Everybody the Vikings knew they were going
to pass all games building because they were falling behind
and they couldn't stop their pass rush. So that's exactly
what you're trying to avoid. What unfolded in that game,
which could unfold in any games managed to run the

(51:26):
ball okay. In the other two games, and the rest
of their season, there weren't great games, and there wasn't
such a huge change in the games that he was back.
There were the games where they got to dictate it,
like the way they ran against the Jets, the way
they ran against the Cowboys, you would think, oh, great,
they dominated, and they did well.

Speaker 6 (51:41):
They only won one of those two games.

Speaker 7 (51:43):
There's it's not always about that, and I'm hesitant to
point at last year versus this year because of the
dramatic changes they're making.

Speaker 6 (51:50):
Sounds like I hate Joe Mixon. I hope it doesn't,
because it's not true. I do think he was.

Speaker 7 (51:55):
He was honestly much better last year than I ever
expected him to be, and I think he would be
very very good in this Nick Cayley offense, and when
they play Baltimore this year, hopefully he'll be out there.

Speaker 6 (52:05):
That's Week five.

Speaker 7 (52:06):
Joe Mixon unavailable to the Texans as they will place
him on the reserve NFI list as part of their
getting this roster down to the fifty three manter limit,
which they have to do by three pm tomorrow.

Speaker 6 (52:18):
More on what this means.

Speaker 3 (52:19):
Next the A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (52:29):
So, if you're just tuning in, you didn't hear the
last segment, you haven't checked Twitter, you haven't whatever. The
Texans with like zero surprise placing Joe Mixon on reserve
non football injury list today. They'll do it tomorrow. I
apologize tomorrow at three o'clock. Specifically, so he's not gonna

(52:50):
play for the first four weeks of the season.

Speaker 6 (52:51):
That's what this means.

Speaker 5 (52:52):
In light of that, you saw that the uh the
Commander's traded Brian Robinson over the weekend for a sixth
round pick. You knew this going in if you were
the Texans, did Joe Mixon was in the shape he
was in that you were likely going to do this.

Speaker 6 (53:13):
You think Nick Cassario was thinking, dang, somebody use my gimmick.

Speaker 5 (53:17):
He used a back end of the draft pick to
get a running back that could really help us right now.

Speaker 6 (53:23):
Uh No, I don't think so. I don't think he've
used it that way.

Speaker 7 (53:25):
It was a little bit of money involved in kind
of the somewhat of the reasoning behind the move. Obviously,
the Niners were felt like they were in dire straits
with the other injuries. Remarkably, the injuries in their backfield
currently were not to their lead back, Christian McCaffrey, so
it was kind of the reverse of last year. But
to start the season they just flat out and needed somebody.
Fourth year of the initial contract signed by Brian Robinson,

(53:49):
that's where he is. So it also could be viewed
as a rental, even though it's a full season rental,
and maybe that's not ideal in what you're looking for,
but I would they think this is a running back.
I don't think you are all that hurt by Oh
we only got him in the last year.

Speaker 6 (54:05):
Well, he can play.

Speaker 7 (54:05):
He can play here trying to go out there and
get somebody that can play, And I would certainly think
he fits in with their group. He's not significantly better,
but he's also clearly a realistic option if you want
to give the ball to him over Damian Pierce, if
you want to give the ball to him over. Not
sure what Nick Chubb will be in the future, and
that's totally fair considering the last two years full of injuries. Yeah,

(54:26):
Brian Robinson would have made some sense. I thought about
it at the time that the commanders appeared to be
willing to move on from him after some of their
very unheralded backs, Bill for instance, came forward and seemed
like they could really help this team this year and
now certainly will once he became more readily available. I
thought it would have made some sense for the Texans

(54:47):
to do that. I don't know that they missed out,
but yeah, it would have made sense.

Speaker 5 (54:51):
And I was, I mean, this is before we knew
about the mixing news, but we kind of assumed, like
you said, you've been talking, You've been hinting at this
for a while. The first thing I thought of it
was it was irregardless. I never know if that's a
real word or not. It's one of those mistaken one. Well,
I like to use it here. Irregardless of Joe Mixon's
status for weeks one, two, three, or four six rounders

(55:15):
A sixth rounder's that's cheap to get a guy that,
even if he is a rental, it's not the first
rental that Nick Cassaria would have made.

Speaker 7 (55:23):
Yeah, it's cheap for the asset, and it's cheap for
the contracts. Making a little over two million dollars a year,
you definitely can figure out the finances of making that
work under the cap situation.

Speaker 5 (55:32):
There specifically no problem at all, and he went to
the forty nine ers, right yep. Doesn't that ask you
or doesn't that make you ask yourself if you're a
forty nine Ers fan, if you're a, for example, guy
who might draft Christian McCaffrey and your fantasy league, not
me what the status of him.

Speaker 6 (55:48):
Is, not at all. It's just how do we keep insurance?

Speaker 7 (55:50):
Absolutely, I mean, he's gonna play Their backup running backs
will play whoever they might have been Mason or Grendo
in years past, and Mason's now moved on, but they're
they're going to have to use Christian McCaffrey differently.

Speaker 6 (56:03):
He's not be Bell cow Bell cow but he's not.
I mean, if you want understand, theyarely left the field. Though.

Speaker 7 (56:10):
You can't have him taking eighty five percent of your
snaps anymore. He may still get eighty five percent of
your running back touches, but he just can't be out
there as off. You've got to keep an eye on
that you've got. I mean, it derailed their season if
some people see it otherwise. I think it derailed their
season because they were so reliant on what he does
for their offense. So you just got to figure out
a way to get him healthy, which I believe they've

(56:32):
done heading into the season.

Speaker 6 (56:33):
But more to the point, keep him healthy.

Speaker 7 (56:35):
So if there's a series or two in each half,
or a series in each half, or you know, ten
to twelve snaps minimum with four to five, six, seven,
eight carries for Robinson, who's also good out of the
backfield catching the football, then that makes perfect sense. And
it's what I think they would have done with their
backfield regardless. But those guys aren't either Mason who's not there,
or Garnda who's not healthy. They were going to do

(56:56):
that anyway, they just needed somebody else because of injury.

Speaker 5 (56:59):
And meanwhile, as much fun as we've had dealing with
all the astros injuries and how long they many of
them have taken all summer long, the summer of twenty five,
how about Aaron Wilson tweeting. The following rehab process has
been called quote tough and complicated by league sources talking

(57:21):
about Joe Mixon. So don't assume that he's just going
to be back in week five. Yes, this moving from the.

Speaker 7 (57:29):
NFI lists in the preseason training camp portion of the
schedule to the reserve NFI list once the fifty three
man initial fifty three man is set, Well, now you're
out for four weeks. Doesn't mean you're returning in five weeks.
It means you can't play for four weeks. It doesn't
have anything to do except for the fact that if
he was going to be out for the season and
they knew that, well, they would just put him on

(57:50):
injured reserve and he would be out for the season
with no opportunity to return. So clearly there's an opportunity
to return. It's just a matter of is it actually weak.
It's not, by no means a guarantee, but hopefully between
now and then, because he is able to practice and
we will still go to Texans practices a little bit
different than we did during camp. Oh, if Joe Mixon's

(58:13):
practicing in September tenth or September nineteenth or twentieth, before
their third game, we'll probably have a better idea of
where things stand with him.

Speaker 6 (58:23):
It certainly makes the first I mean, you didn't.

Speaker 7 (58:26):
Well that's what Aaron said, just to reference that, since
you brought up that's kind of what I was talking
about earlier this segment. Whatever happened, and it's he's on
the non football injury list, presuming that could mean it
was an injury that took place, not while he was
working out at the team facility, could have been in
another totally normal situation, but not there with them. And

(58:47):
then the subsequent recovery time suggests something else happened. Was
there a recurrence, was there a new injury, Was there
a complication from surgery, Was there an infection? Any number
of answers, all of which I'd purely be speculating on.
But I don't think I'm speculating on the fact that
the recovery did.

Speaker 6 (59:05):
Not go as planned. That's a given at this point.
But I just I don't know.

Speaker 5 (59:12):
I don't know that I agree with you that, and
I know this isn't how you said it, but this
is how it came off. Doesn't really matter who the
running back is for the Texans right now. Okay, here's why.

Speaker 7 (59:24):
If you can't win without Joe Mixon on the field,
then you probably didn't put your roster together very well
and you probably don't run a very good offense. And
I'm not again trying to say you can't win without him.
I just talked about the Niners. It derailed their season
when Christian McCaffrey, in my opinion, was sidelined. I don't
think Christian McCaffrey is to the Niners what Joe Mixon
is the Texans not even close.

Speaker 5 (59:42):
But they felt the need to go out and get
Joe Mixon before last season because their running back situation
just wasn't getting it done right.

Speaker 7 (59:50):
And if that's all they had here, then I would agree.
But to me, they did two things to not need
Joe Mixon the way they needed him before last year.
And one is obvious. Chris Strasser is not employed by
the Texans anymore, and that is huge. Chris Strawsser, the
offensive line coach, just he's bad at coaching, that's all.

Speaker 6 (01:00:09):
He's awful. Offensive line coach, just terrible.

Speaker 7 (01:00:11):
And so they've changed him and the personnel and the
offensive line coach and the OC and I may be
I don't know what size group this is now. It's
a lot bigger group than it was during the first
few weeks of non padded practice when people were crushing
Nick Chubb for saying he can't play anymore.

Speaker 6 (01:00:27):
I don't think that.

Speaker 7 (01:00:29):
So two years before the Mixin arrival, Damian Pierce was
their best running back. Now a year and change later,
they have both Joe Mixon and Nick Chubb. Nick Chubb
is obviously gonna play, and Joe Mixon's currently out. I
just don't think it's as big of a drop off
now as it would have been last year had they
not gone out and traded for Mixing. They so clearly

(01:00:49):
needed a running back, and almost every avenue was taken
by every other team, And they realized mix is about
to get released, and we can't even afford the possibility
that somebody else is just gonna sign him with it
becomes a free agent, so will trade a late round
pick for him? They knew probably and maybe the timing
didn't match up, so you would have gone harder after
somebody better than Nick Chubb, or younger than Nick Chubb,

(01:01:11):
or less injured than Nick Chubb. And you just didn't
realize where Mixon's health was going to be because something changed.
But they have Nuko Collins, they have CJ. Stroud, They
presumably have a our offensive line, like you should be
able to operate your offense without Joe Mixon to a
satisfactory level.

Speaker 6 (01:01:31):
I'm just skeptical, that's all I mean.

Speaker 7 (01:01:33):
And you you're sounding like you think they can't beat
the Rams, they can't beat the Bucks two playoff teams.
Maybe they can beat Jacksonville and Tennessee. Maybe they get
out of four.

Speaker 5 (01:01:42):
I'm saying you're adding another massive question mark at a
skill position to an already existing question mark, which is
the offensive line until we're further we have further proof
of all fair.

Speaker 7 (01:01:54):
I'm probably just less you're bullish took by today's news
because I've been expecting it for about six years.

Speaker 6 (01:02:01):
There is a difference between that, which I think I
agree with you.

Speaker 5 (01:02:04):
I mean, he hasn't been out there for and he
hasn't been doing anything, and there was walking boots and
all sorts of stuff. That part is, But I'm I
think you're more bullish on what they can do without
him than I am.

Speaker 7 (01:02:15):
The idea of his absence is more about I didn't
think he'd be twenty five carry Joe Mixon in week one,
two or three to begin with. So now the drop
off from there to what they have it may be
a bigger question about you. And you're also we're only
talking about these games. No Joe Mixon for seventeen games,
I'd probably be be telling you a different story that
would be a little bit more alarming.

Speaker 6 (01:02:36):
I guess I don't know that that'll happen. I don't
expect it.

Speaker 5 (01:02:38):
Yeah, yeah, I guess I'm just bracing myself for this
not just being the four games, because gosh, this has
an Astros injury feel to it right now.

Speaker 6 (01:02:47):
Just you don't know a lot and it's not going
according to plan.

Speaker 5 (01:02:50):
But that's that's that for a little bit, because when
we come back, we're gonna switch back over to Astros.
Steve Sparks dropping by for his weekly visit, his thoughts
on the series in Baltimore and moving forward.

Speaker 6 (01:03:02):
Coming up next.

Speaker 3 (01:03:05):
The ag on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (01:03:18):
Let's take a quick break from the Joe mix and
injury news, but don't worry, we're gonna get it.

Speaker 6 (01:03:22):
Right back to it.

Speaker 5 (01:03:24):
Astros took three out of four over the weekend in Baltimore.
They are back home, and we'll start a three game
series with just the god awful Colorado Rockies, and that's
being nice.

Speaker 6 (01:03:34):
That'll start tomorrow. However, they got an off night tonight.

Speaker 5 (01:03:37):
When they resume, they'll have Jordan Alvarez back in the lineup,
Jake Myers right around the corner. Steve Sparks actually will
not be calling that series, but he did join the
station earlier today for his weekly visit and talked about
a number of Astros topics, starting with his overall thoughts
on that series in Baltimore.

Speaker 6 (01:03:56):
At the team taking three out of four, it was.

Speaker 13 (01:03:58):
Just good to see that the Astros were able to
capitalize on the three starters who through the first three
games in the Baltimore series. It was Young, Kramer and Povids.
These guys pished against the Astros in Houston.

Speaker 2 (01:04:14):
And they crushed them.

Speaker 13 (01:04:15):
I mean, they absolutely went right through them, and to
be able to make the necessary adjustments that they needed
to this weekend against those three pitchers in particular was.

Speaker 2 (01:04:25):
A site that they needed to see that.

Speaker 13 (01:04:29):
And I've told you I felt like so far this
season there's been a type of pitcher who's been able
to command that outer third against the right handed batters
with spin that were going to give them fits.

Speaker 2 (01:04:40):
And we saw it with Clarity and Detroit. We continue
to see it from time to time.

Speaker 13 (01:04:44):
But they made some really good adjustments against Baltimore on
those pictures and they were spitting on those pitches out
there and waiting for those guys to come to the
inner third of the plate, and guys like Corea Christian
Walker really took advantage of it.

Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
So that's what I want to see. I want to
see some adjustments.

Speaker 13 (01:05:01):
I want to see a little bit more patience and
a better game plan against those types of pitchers.

Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
And I feel like we're starting to see that.

Speaker 6 (01:05:08):
Now, Steve.

Speaker 14 (01:05:09):
Was it just as simple as making them make the
pitcher give you what you love to hit as opposed
to hitting a pitcher's pitch.

Speaker 3 (01:05:16):
Was it really just that simple and patient?

Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
That's what it's all about, Man's That's the number one
rule of hitting is get a good pitch. And it
might be a little bit different for different guys. It
might be hit or third might be you.

Speaker 13 (01:05:28):
Know, low or high or whatever, but get a good pitch,
and you know what that is, and especially early in
the counts, you're going to hunt that pitch until you
get it.

Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
Two strikes is a different story. But I think that's
where it starts.

Speaker 14 (01:05:40):
Any concern at all, I don't know, because Lady was
starting pitching, and maybe from or in particular, but mccullors
is still trying to get it. I thought the best
thing that happened with him on Friday was pitching out
of that basis loaded jam.

Speaker 11 (01:05:52):
You know I did.

Speaker 14 (01:05:52):
Did he to be able to come out of that
after it put it loaded him up? But is starting
pitching a concern right now?

Speaker 11 (01:05:59):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (01:05:59):
It is.

Speaker 2 (01:06:00):
You know, you can't sugarcoat it. I mean, you're looking
for guys to kind of get over that hump. And
you know, there's a couple of the pitchers in particular
that have had long layoffs and we've seen Sandy.

Speaker 13 (01:06:11):
Alcantra, the Marlins, who's a cy Young Award winner, Spencer
striker of the Rays. They've slung layoffs and they've come
back and struggled, and you know, sometimes it's just not
easy to jump right.

Speaker 2 (01:06:20):
Back in into the thick things and command the ball
the way you hope to. So that's that's the main thing.
And this is what I want to see. I want
to see guys attack the strike zone. I want them
to win the count.

Speaker 13 (01:06:33):
I want them to get ahead of the count and
then get the hitters to expand the strike zone. I
think that's the key is we need to see whether
it's relievers or starters, whoever it is.

Speaker 2 (01:06:44):
Guys attack and make the other team know that you're
coming after them. Put them on the defense.

Speaker 14 (01:06:50):
Steve, if you just Joe's done a great job of me.
He's had to change lineups with all the adjustments he's
had to make. This year a plod for him, considering
all these injuries to keep them in this position. Two
games up in first place, but just the top the
first six. We don't have to go through the seven, eight,
and nine. Well, what's the best hitting order for you?
Where do you want these guys when Jordon's back? How

(01:07:10):
does that look to you?

Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
I'll tell you this, this is what I think the
Astros miss a lot. It's paradous.

Speaker 13 (01:07:17):
Yeah, you know, the number of pitches that he was
able to see was different from most of the other
guys on the team. If you remember, in fort bats
one game, he set a record at Dyke and Park
seeing thirty seven pitches and for it bats, you.

Speaker 6 (01:07:31):
Can't replace that.

Speaker 13 (01:07:32):
I feel like they're still trying to get guys to
kind of work, to count and do some things. I
know I want pain youa leading off yep, And I
know I want jord On to bat in the first
inning and then where you go from match on. I'm
not exactly sure, mate, may depend on the pitching matchup
or whatever, and you're trying to get your best guys
to hit as often as possible, But it starts.

Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
With Pinion jord On for me hitting.

Speaker 14 (01:07:56):
In the first edit, Steve went with Jordon, Well, I
guess we're all in anticipating him being in the lineup
tomorrow when they resume. What's fair or I mean, we
know how good he is, but what should we expect
from him early? Or is he just too good for
us to even put our finger on that.

Speaker 13 (01:08:12):
I think you run into trouble if there's expectations, but
you're just hoping he can impact the rest of the
lineup with his presence.

Speaker 11 (01:08:19):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:08:19):
If he's going to be a little little stale as
far as his timing goes, that's understandable.

Speaker 13 (01:08:24):
But we've seen him jumping in the lineup after long
layoffs before, where we've seen him play three games in
spring training, jump into the lineup and feel like he's
never left the beat. So I don't know if that's
fair to expect that, but if he does, I wouldn't
be shocked right.

Speaker 2 (01:08:40):
He looks like he's swinging the bat really well.

Speaker 13 (01:08:42):
And corpus Chrissy's got four doubles down there in fifteen
of bats.

Speaker 2 (01:08:45):
And that's what you're hoping for. Man, You're just hoping
that Jordan gets pitched too, and he gets he gets
to take advantage of that power.

Speaker 5 (01:08:54):
If Jordon gets pitched too, he will take advantage. He
will absolutely take advantage.

Speaker 6 (01:08:59):
Especially.

Speaker 5 (01:09:00):
Look again, I know we don't like to predict or
even ask for sweeps of certain teams, but Colorado was
just deplorable. And I can't think of a better situation,
especially at home, for jord On to make his return
than in this scenario.

Speaker 7 (01:09:19):
Hopefully, very comfortable ballpark, very comfortable at the plate, and
very comfortable from a health standpoint.

Speaker 6 (01:09:25):
Totally agree. It's a really nice spot.

Speaker 7 (01:09:26):
You're a home for ten days, so he's able to
enjoy that part of just kind of figuring things out
once again. And he's faced pitching in the last six days.
In four of the games he played in four Sat twice,
played on Tuesday, SAT. Wednesday, played Thursday, Friday, SAT. Saturday,
and then played again yesterday before he was lifted for
a pinch hitter in the Hooks game with the bases

(01:09:48):
loaded in the seventh inning, with which would have been
as second at bat in the inning and the twelfth
batter in the inning. But they decided he had enough
and he was healthy, so let's get him to Houston.
Presumably don't know that for a fact, and the Astros
haven't made any preemptive announcements. Shockingly, the Texans did that today,
which we were talking about earlier. But what Steve said
there is one of the things that kind of goes

(01:10:08):
back to something I posted earlier about the potential lineup
for just Tuesday, Just Tuesday, where I had yourd on
Alvarez batting fourth behind Paynya, Correa and Altuve. Still a
little bit of a thought about how strong al two
a season has been, provided he's been batting third and
pretty much everywhere else not nearly as strong. Paya is

(01:10:30):
obviously going to lead off, And so your other question
than remains if you're kind of locked into Altuve batting
third is well as Korea batting fourth, or as Alvarez
batting fourth, And so I thought Tuesday tomorrow only tomorrow
might make some sense to have him there, And again
after the first inning, you kind of throw all this
stuff out the window. Steve's right, who's your best hitters?
Who are your best hitter?

Speaker 6 (01:10:50):
Who you want batting as often as possible.

Speaker 7 (01:10:52):
The further down the lineup they are, the more infrequent
their spot in the order comes up.

Speaker 6 (01:10:56):
Totally get that.

Speaker 7 (01:10:57):
After the first inning, it comes somewhat irrelevant to is
he going to bat in this inning or that thing.
It's just where you are in the lineup. But if
you're fourth, you aren't guaranteed to bat. And if you're
fourth and you do bat the well, that means he
either scored or somebody's on base. Otherwise you may just
be sitting there batting third with nobody on in two outs?
Do you get pitches you want? Are they afraid of

(01:11:19):
you yet? Are you comfortable there? We already saw him
bat twice, our bat second for some of the season,
and it did not feel like he was comfortable at all.
There's a lot of things for Joe to consider. Some
of what Steve said has a lot of merit behind it,
So I definitely understand that we'll continue that discussion, continue
discussion about the Joe Mixon news. Again, just minimum of

(01:11:39):
four games is not gonna play and we haven't yet
started on the fact that this is the big, big,
big opening weekend for college football, all that coming.

Speaker 3 (01:11:47):
Up the aged on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (01:11:58):
All right, question, since you've already tweeted basically the same,
you do not think this is a doomsday scenario for
Joe Mixon?

Speaker 6 (01:12:09):
When do you think he comes out? I don't think
it's a doomsday scenario for the Texans. Ooh, that is different.
So if Joe Mixon doesn't play this year, well, take
it easy.

Speaker 7 (01:12:18):
Why if he's not playing this year, he would not
They would not be handling his roster manipulation this way.
If he wasn't gonna play this year, they just go
on ir and that would be that.

Speaker 6 (01:12:28):
That's fair. Why do I feel like he's not gonna
play this year? You shouldn't. I don't know why you
feel like.

Speaker 5 (01:12:34):
Because because I have no idea, we don't even have
a clear indication of when it happened.

Speaker 7 (01:12:40):
Right, But why are you assuming it's awful? You could
be assuming we don't know anything and he'll be back
against Baltimore in four weeks.

Speaker 6 (01:12:46):
Well, I'll tell you why.

Speaker 5 (01:12:47):
The number one reason is because I have PTSD from
the Astros sorry, that's just the case, and I'm not alone. Secondly,
I feel like when it's good news, you hear more
about it, or you have you have more detail about it,
or they're not as cloudy about it, or whatever you
want to however you want to phrase it.

Speaker 6 (01:13:05):
You know what I'm saying. Yeah, I in that fair
Like most injuries.

Speaker 5 (01:13:09):
If they feel good, they can't wait to tell everybody
this guy's going to be back as soon as possible,
or at least this is a time frame.

Speaker 7 (01:13:16):
I do think this is still in that different category
because we didn't all watch it happen. That's what I
hate him an off season injury, this was away from
the facility, didn't happen in a game, didn't happen in practice.
We haven't all seen it. We haven't seen him walk off,
and we haven't seen anything related to walk out all
it was involved. I cannot stress that out walking boots
people just freak out about it when it really is.
It's usually not like we've seen quarterbacks leave games that are.

Speaker 5 (01:13:38):
Walking of an air cast and except it's nowhere near
an air cast, and injury visuals don't compare those two,
I have to.

Speaker 7 (01:13:47):
I mean, we see quarterbacks leaving games because of a
high ankle sprain on a Monday night.

Speaker 6 (01:13:53):
Oh my god, they're playing on Sunday. How is that possible?
They were in a walking boot because they're a came
in the locker room and give them the spy.

Speaker 7 (01:14:00):
That's how they're just trying to make sure it doesn't
get worse and you have the opportunity to recover from
it more quickly.

Speaker 5 (01:14:05):
I don't want the Texan starting running back being in
a walking boot at any time during the offseason.

Speaker 7 (01:14:10):
No, I don't want this either, And they're clearly in
a much better position. I don't think anybody's debating that.
And I'm not sure that everybody've used Joe Mixon the
way I do. And he's definitely not in the top ten,
and maybe he's closer to the top ten than the
back ten of the middle ten, if you follow. But
I think it's they're capable of operating this offense if
they've you know, I do think I told you already

(01:14:32):
this hour. I think that the manner, the timeline of
how this all happened probably dictated how they attacked the position.
I think they would have drafted a running back pretty
much regardless which they did. Wood he Mark's very good
pass catching back. He scored this past weekend, and it
has had some pretty good moments both during camp and
in his preseason work albe at all against reserves. And

(01:14:53):
I do think there was a real chance because Joe Mixon,
the timing of when he was hurt, I believe would
have indicated they want to go get something done. But
think back to when free agency started, and then think
back to when Nick Chubb was signed. I mean Texan's
got their first good look at Nick Chubb at the
end of July because he was signed late, late, late,
late in the off season on field program for every team,

(01:15:17):
he was on the field for one practice, which means
free agency opened in March, and then came April, and
then came May, and here we are in June, and Okay,
now we need to look at a free agent running
back that we think makes sense. Well, that's why they
didn't attack it differently in the off season, because I
don't think the knowledge that Joe Mixon was not going
to be available for the first four weeks was knowledge

(01:15:37):
that they had something changed along the way. Some path
to recovery was not the path that they expected, and
so when they realized, well, maybe his season is in
jeopardy because something else has happened, we don't want to
sit around and do nothing. Damian Pierce was also hurt
and not participating in off season workout, So they had
to sign somebody that's somebody's Nick Chubb. You know what,

(01:15:58):
he marks might have el evaded himself all the way
to the point where he might be looked at to
help this team. He is expected to help this team
in a way that if he's active, he can be
a special teams player, which I think always helps for
young players to show that they're capable of earning that
roster spot, and that's just because they can run the football.
But yeah, you know, since Brian Robinson just got traded
over the week, and of course that came up, the

(01:16:19):
timeline on that is very different than adding Nick Chubb.
You had the information, this is not They didn't find
out that the play for Joe Mixon today is to
send him to the NFI list tomorrow, so he misses
the first four weeks. They had this information during the
time the Commanders and Niners and other NFL teams were
talking about a possible move and they felt they were

(01:16:39):
equipped well enough not to need to offer up a
late round pick for Brian Robinson in the fourth year
of his contract that he's still under.

Speaker 5 (01:16:47):
Well, Brian Robinson is no longer available. And so my
question to you during one of the breaks I'll pose
it now, was Okay, do we think or do if
Nick Cassario goes out and I hate to he's a
word the term scrap heap, because that's not what it is,
and this happens all the time. Cuts get made. There
are close competitions, and there are odd men out, so

(01:17:10):
to speak. If Nick Cassario goes and moves to sign
one of those, does it tell you a little bit
about how he feels about the prospect of basically Nick
Chubb being your starting running back.

Speaker 7 (01:17:21):
Not because there's who are they gonna sign? Who's getting cut?
That's better than that, you think, unless you're totally lying
to us or and my eyes are also lying to me,
that you think Nick Chubb can't play, you're not signing well,
you're you're talking about finding someone on the scrap heap
that becomes your RB one.

Speaker 6 (01:17:37):
No, that doesn't happen. Talking about depth because he's.

Speaker 7 (01:17:40):
Behind Chubb Pierce Marks, how many others. He's cam Akers
from a couple of years ago. We talked about that
during the break. Yeah, cam Akers was here and I
think he provided something to the Texans. I was a
little surprised they moved him when they did. But he's
also been released by that team again, and released by
the team he signed this year again.

Speaker 5 (01:17:58):
I don't like the fact that you're now injured running back.
His next string that that you're depending on right now
is off injured Nick Chubb.

Speaker 6 (01:18:07):
And that's what I'm getting out the most right But
it's not a matter of if, but when.

Speaker 7 (01:18:13):
Nothing really changed today though they've had four to five weeks,
maybe six weeks, maybe eight weeks, maybe ten weeks with
this information and did not make any other move.

Speaker 6 (01:18:23):
So I think they're comfortable with it. You might not be.
I'm not comfortable with it, but there's always so much
you can do. I think it's more. But all that
being said, I don't mean we can blue in the
face this.

Speaker 7 (01:18:33):
If you want, we're gonna have to. I definitely don't
want to. It's fun, though it's not fun. We don't
I don't have anything to go on. It's total guess work.

Speaker 6 (01:18:43):
In all seriousness, that is the least fun part of this.

Speaker 7 (01:18:46):
It's okay to address it, but not necessarily over and
over and over until we have more information.

Speaker 5 (01:18:51):
But that's the other thing. I don't think we're getting
more information for a very very long time. Why would
they all of a sudden now start being it's not
I already told you. I think we're getting the information.
When he's on the field, he has the ability to
practice by going on this list. They will practice three
times a week for four weeks once the season begins,
before that fourth week of eligibility would even arrive. If

(01:19:13):
he hasn't come onto the practice field at any point
in time, he's not playing against Baltimore, they're not activating him.

Speaker 4 (01:19:18):
They do.

Speaker 7 (01:19:18):
Their off week is week six. If I didn't state
that already, so that time frame may maybe it.

Speaker 6 (01:19:25):
Turns into it.

Speaker 7 (01:19:25):
Well, he probably probably could push it and he's practiced
for a couple of weeks, we can go ahead and
he can play against Baltimore, or we're three to one.
If he gets two more weeks off, the likelihood of
him having this as in a recurring problem or a
lingering problem. Maybe we feel like we've made that go
down a little bit more by having him out for

(01:19:47):
two additional weeks while only missing one additional game. They
come out of the off week with a road game
in Seattle, followed by three consecutive home games against the
Niners Broncos, and they close up their season's worth work
against the Jaguars.

Speaker 6 (01:20:02):
Again.

Speaker 7 (01:20:02):
I just don't happen to think they're season hinges on
his availability, but it does change my opinion on the
big picture. If you're trying to tell me, yeah, good
luck being the same team we thought you were going
to be. If you're playing seventeen games without Joe Mixon.
How about, if I look at it, you're playing ten
to eleven healthy games down the stretch with Joe Mixon,
which certainly could be a possibility.

Speaker 3 (01:20:25):
The a team on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (01:20:32):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam Talking Your Team's
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the eighteen.

Speaker 5 (01:20:48):
It's the four o'clock hour here on Sports SOX seven
ninety and Space City Home Network. Wex ac Cole Thompson
with you, and as promised, we turned the conversation.

Speaker 6 (01:20:58):
Back to Texans football.

Speaker 5 (01:21:00):
All well, it's very convenient that Sam Warren is joining
us right now, especially since we just got the news
officially that the Texans starting back starting running back for
much much of last season, Joe Mixon is going to
go on the injured list with the ability to perform
at WINK five.

Speaker 6 (01:21:18):
But I don't think that's going to be the case,
Sam to you.

Speaker 11 (01:21:24):
So I think this was this was no surprise to
many people that he was going to go on this list.

Speaker 15 (01:21:30):
We'll see what happens with that, you know, with that
week five date, But this is you know, you don't
want to rush back Joe Mixon with the fact that
he's been out for this amount of time and we
really haven't seen him around getting any work at all.
So I think I think things are trending towards, you know,

(01:21:50):
a slow ramp up and trying to get him as
healthy as he can so that he can be a
difference maker when he is fully ready to go and
and not risking reansry.

Speaker 11 (01:22:00):
So I wouldn't be surprised to see him out for
longer than five weeks.

Speaker 15 (01:22:06):
But you know, the updates haven't been that prompt in
the first place, so we'll see. There's no surprises here.

Speaker 7 (01:22:15):
Well, one thing We've talked about Sam throughout this entire
time period and all the way going back to March
free agency, their offseason workout program, the late part of
the program when they did in fact sign Nick Chubb
to where we are today, where they haven't added, you know,
anybody at that position in the backfield in that time,
but did get back Damian Pierce. Does all of those
things in the timeline of it suggest that you know

(01:22:35):
that maybe recovery was not going as planned and you
know the beginning of the off season didn't feel like
to them internally they needed to go out and get somebody.
Ultimately they felt like they did later on that was
Nick Chubb. And here we are as the season approaches
and cuts what we made across the league. A. Does
it feel like something clearly changed on the path timeline
to recovery? And B do you expect a some sort

(01:22:58):
of addition external to the running back room before they
hit the rams?

Speaker 15 (01:23:04):
I would say definitely the Nick Chubb signing does signify
that something changed in his recovery timeline.

Speaker 11 (01:23:11):
I think the just the the timing of him getting.

Speaker 15 (01:23:15):
Signed in June like right before ot as Definitely, it
definitely signifies to me that hey, Joe wasn't ready.

Speaker 11 (01:23:23):
We kind of need a backup plan here. Let's go
get a veteran that we think still has a little
bit of juice left. And I think they're they're.

Speaker 15 (01:23:30):
Happy to They're happy with what they've seen out of
Knicksubb so far. I think from what we talked to
De Miko about today, he seems pretty happy with the
running back depth that they have in their room. I
don't know if there's gonna be a better option out
there on the waiver wire with these cutdown days that

(01:23:50):
are available, but I think he's I think he's pretty
happy with the combination of Nick Chubb, what he's seen
from him in training camp so far, happy with the
explosiveness coming back from those two lower body injuries. I
think he was happy with what he saw from Damian
Pierce in the last preseason game against the Lions. I
think they're very excited about what what he Mark springs

(01:24:13):
to the table as well, seeing what he did against
the Lions and what he's done throughout training camp. So
I wouldn't it wouldn't put it past them to go
out and look for for veteran help. But I think
they are pretty content with the stable of running backs
that they have even without Jill Mixon.

Speaker 7 (01:24:30):
You gave our listeners Demico and the team's thoughts on
what they think they have in Nick Chubb.

Speaker 6 (01:24:35):
What do you think they have in Nick Chubb?

Speaker 15 (01:24:39):
Uh, He's He's definitely concerned me at the start of camp,
but as you know, he's gotten out there and put
the pads on. I mean, Nick Zubb is a physical runner.
He's not one of the guys that you're gonna see,
you know what, You're gonna.

Speaker 11 (01:24:55):
Ultimately get out of him when he's not in pads.
So seeing him go out there.

Speaker 15 (01:24:59):
Against the PA, as you know, that's not a great
defense in the first place. But what he did in
that preseason game definitely showed me that he can have
that explosiveness and can be a solid running back for
this team.

Speaker 11 (01:25:16):
But I wouldn't say that, you know, Nick Schubb is
the belcout back for this this offense.

Speaker 15 (01:25:21):
I think they're definitely going to interchange these running backs.
I think this the signifies that Damian Pierce could be
around when you know, with him also being on that
injury timeline didn't really know about where he stood with
this team previously.

Speaker 11 (01:25:37):
It seems like he could be in the mix. Now
it seems like darre is still probably going to be
the third down back, but then giving what he marks,
maybe some uh some elevated carries as well. But I
would I would say.

Speaker 15 (01:25:49):
That that cub still has some juice left and he's
he's trending upwards, but I wouldn't say that he is
the you know, the end all.

Speaker 11 (01:25:57):
Be all at running back.

Speaker 5 (01:25:58):
Talking to Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle, he covers
the Houston Texans. We talked about this a little bit
earlier as you were watching the weekend unfold and saw
what happened with the Brian Robinson trade.

Speaker 6 (01:26:10):
I know you just got done mentioning all the names
in the running back room.

Speaker 5 (01:26:13):
Were you surprised though, having you know, gotten him for
a sixth round pick in San Francisco, that maybe the
Texans didn't check in on that situation.

Speaker 11 (01:26:24):
I think that's certainly somebody that that could have been
a benefit to the Texans.

Speaker 15 (01:26:29):
But I think again, like they're they're happy with this
this rookie running back that they had in what he marks,
they've even gotten, you know, these aren't guys that you
want to rely on, but guys that can spell.

Speaker 11 (01:26:42):
Carries with with Juwar Jordan British books.

Speaker 15 (01:26:45):
If they wanted to keep one of those guys, but
those guys around, but I think they're very happy with
what they've seen out of Jubb and his progression of
Damian Peers. I think Dara as that third down back
and what he I think that just signifies that that
that they weren't out there and looking for Brian or
another running back on that trademarket. I think it says

(01:27:06):
something about their faith in the depth that they do have,
and I think the MIKO definitely talked about that today
that they like the running backs that they have outside
of mixing, even if Mixon is not available for some time.

Speaker 7 (01:27:19):
Not much time to analyze the tight end situation with
the addition of Harris and Bryant, but some roster decisions
to be made. In your mind, do you think they
will keep Smith over Bryant or vice versa, And do
you think Leche makes the initial fifty three And similarly
at the wide receiver position, do you think both Barrios
and Justin Watson will make the team and they will

(01:27:41):
initially have seven wide receivers on that fifty three.

Speaker 11 (01:27:46):
Yeah, so with tight end, I think there's not You're
right that there hasn't.

Speaker 15 (01:27:51):
Been a whole ton of time to evaluate Harrison Bryant
and Erf Smith or Luke Liche and.

Speaker 11 (01:27:56):
How they kind of work out together.

Speaker 15 (01:28:00):
I know that they've they they had kind of them
out there in in equal parts. I think Irv's got
a lot less snatch than l and Bryant, so.

Speaker 11 (01:28:10):
They were really testing out what they had in Brian.
I think that they know what they have.

Speaker 15 (01:28:14):
In Erth Smith, so I think Smith provides a little
bit more of a pass catching threat off the banks,
which you know Brevic Jordan did have that as well,
So maybe they're looking for something like that, But I
wouldn't be surprised given what they got.

Speaker 11 (01:28:29):
You know, they went out and.

Speaker 15 (01:28:30):
Traded for Harrison Bryant if he makes the team over
over Erth Smith.

Speaker 11 (01:28:36):
I think La is somebody that they want to keep around, uh,
but I don't see him.

Speaker 15 (01:28:40):
Initially making this roster, especially if they want to keep
a guy like Yakam Johnson around to play fullback for
this team. And then with with the receiver position, I
think it was you know, very telling on uh the
preseason game that.

Speaker 11 (01:28:58):
They that Barrios really.

Speaker 15 (01:29:00):
Didn't get very many snaps, and then you have Justin
Watson back there catching some punts as well, So they
were really testing Watson out and seeing.

Speaker 11 (01:29:08):
Where he can sit on this team. But the fact
that they.

Speaker 15 (01:29:10):
Didn't really play at all, I think tells you you
know where they stand with them. I think they're they're
very comfortable if they want to bring seven, seven receivers
on the team. I mean they did last year and
Steve uh uh, you know, Steven Simms provided less of
a receiving threat than Braxton Barrios does when he was

(01:29:31):
kind of the same returner role type player.

Speaker 11 (01:29:35):
So I think that they could bring seven guys on
this roster. I think Justin Watson provides.

Speaker 15 (01:29:39):
A lot on special teams as well, so it really
wouldn't surprise me. But they've got a lot of really
solid options at a bunch of different positions.

Speaker 11 (01:29:48):
So the roster cutdown today is gonna be really tough
for this team.

Speaker 6 (01:29:51):
Sam.

Speaker 5 (01:29:52):
I've asked Wex this, I've asked other guests this question.
Which of the Iowa State rookie receivers do you think
is going to have the biggest impact this upcoming year?

Speaker 15 (01:30:03):
You know, I would say Jayden Higgins would have a
little bit of a bigger impact just because of the
position that he plays.

Speaker 11 (01:30:11):
I think jen Jalen Nole has maybe flashed a little
bit more in camp.

Speaker 15 (01:30:17):
Jadan Higgins had some great plays at the Greenbrier, but
he's also He's made a great diving catch in the
preseason game.

Speaker 11 (01:30:23):
But I would say Nol has had some of those
those flash plays from the flat a little bit more.
But he is a little bit blocked by a guy
like Christian Kirk, who is going to be your starting
slot receiver. They haven't really.

Speaker 15 (01:30:35):
Tested Noel on the outside all that much. Meanwhile, you have,
you know, Jaden Higgins, who's this big outside receiver who
you can play alongside Nico Collins and Kirk in three
receiver sets. So I would say that the Higgins will
probably see the field a little bit more, at least
initially barring any injury, and I could see him having

(01:30:56):
a legitimate factor on this team early on, just from
the speed and the the catch catch radius and just
all the skills that he provides. I think he's going
to see the field and we'll have a little bit
of a bigger impact early on.

Speaker 11 (01:31:10):
I definitely can't.

Speaker 15 (01:31:11):
See Jalen Knowle having a lot of impact on this team,
though Tom pum later Tom later games and down the line.

Speaker 7 (01:31:19):
Last thing for you and analysis not required, merely an answer.
Will start Week one for the Texans at left tackle.

Speaker 11 (01:31:28):
In fact, I think I think so. I think so.
I think they liked what he presents at that left
tackle position.

Speaker 15 (01:31:37):
A lot, and I think the fact that they you know,
Cam Robinson has come back and practice in in recent days,
but I think they really like what they've seen from
Arianti Ersuri and they can see him as a left
tackle of the future, and they've they've played well on
that offensive line with Titus at right tackle at Ingram's

(01:31:58):
played probably better.

Speaker 11 (01:31:59):
Than they he was going to play at right guard.

Speaker 15 (01:32:02):
So I think I think pay will be the starting
left tackle come Week one against the Rants.

Speaker 7 (01:32:08):
Well, Jamiico Ryans kind of sounded like he was excited
about that possibility, although I don't want to put words
in his mouth when he spoke to us earlier today.

Speaker 6 (01:32:14):
We'll play that for our listeners in a little bit.

Speaker 12 (01:32:16):
Sam.

Speaker 7 (01:32:17):
Appreciate your coverage down on the Chronicle obviously all throughout
the offseason and now we're in season, and we'll continue
to look forward there and appreciate your time this afternoon.

Speaker 11 (01:32:25):
Thanks guys, appreciate you having me on.

Speaker 7 (01:32:27):
You got it, Sam Warren, Houston Chronicle talking Texans. We
will continue on that very topic the last two questions
about the Texans rookies we start their next.

Speaker 3 (01:32:36):
The a on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 6 (01:32:45):
I mentioned we.

Speaker 7 (01:32:45):
Would be sending you a little bit of that conversation
here with us after Sam's appearance with us on the
Texans trio of offensive rookies. But I must begin this
segment with and then there was one and then there
was one NFL player holding in because earlier today Terry
McLaurin took his name off the list when after requesting

(01:33:08):
a trade, he and his team came together on a
nearly one hundred million dollar deal over three seasons. And
he'll now be in line to get on the practice
field and be prepared to help the Commanders start their
season one and zero. And it becomes one because according
to those that know all the leading voices, he's Peter
Ian Rapopert.

Speaker 6 (01:33:29):
I believe is his name.

Speaker 7 (01:33:30):
At rap Sheet says that the Bengals are closing in
on an agreement with NFL sack leader, which is the
way people should recognize. Trey Hendrickson is not Miles Garrett,
wasn't will and Anderson or Danielle Hunter. Wasn't a Bosa brother,
wasn't Mikah Parsons, wasn't a Watt brother. It was Trey
Hendrickson closing in on an agreement on a new contract

(01:33:54):
and will become one of the highest paid defenders. So
he very publicly expressed his displeasure with how negotiations were
going multiple times during the offseason and.

Speaker 6 (01:34:03):
Then again when camp began.

Speaker 7 (01:34:06):
But he will now not play under a one year
deal for the Bengals upcoming this season. But in fact,
we'll have some financial stability and will be paid very,
very handsomely for the production he's already put on the field,
the one in the and then there was one. If
I'm not mistaken in such a bold statement, is Micah

(01:34:26):
Parsons same type of player as Hendrickson, and that he's
supposed to disrupt in the backfield, same kind of production
as Henderson.

Speaker 6 (01:34:35):
That's exactly what he's.

Speaker 7 (01:34:36):
Done for all four of his seasons with the Jerry
Jones led Dallas Cowboys. However, he was boy if body
language was everything, nobody displayed body language much worse than
what Mike Parsons did over the weekend during their final
preseason tune up.

Speaker 6 (01:34:54):
He was tired, he was very tired from what fighting
with Jerry.

Speaker 7 (01:35:00):
It's exhaust I don't know if it's exhausting or not,
but it's honestly what happened with McLaurin, and then, even
more specifically, because of the position similarity, what's now happening
with Hendrickson. It's why, no matter how ugly it seems
to have gotten, how public it seems to have gotten,
how it seems so about how wrong Jerry is, about
the way he's operating, and how many times he keeps

(01:35:21):
making the same mistake which costing is costing him and
his capologist more and more angst every single year they
do it and are the last team every single time
to sign the marquee players, and they're always at the
wrong end of the Well, this really worked out for
the team. They're still gonna come to an agreement. He's
still gonna sign with the Cowboys. He's still gonna be

(01:35:43):
long term Dallas. I don't know if he's going to
play Week one because of timing and health. But I
do believe they will still believe they're gonna come to
an agreement and he's gonna get paid very very well
by Jerry. This is gonna end badly in one of fifty. Well,
I don't necessarily disagree. I still think that he's serious.

(01:36:05):
Here's in a weird way.

Speaker 5 (01:36:08):
I think the reason he would get traded if it
were to happen is because Jerry's involved, like his ego,
his all the kind of stuff that makes Jerry bad
as an owner slash GM, and it's on full display
in the Netflix documentary if you've seen clips. I haven't
watched it yet. I've seen enough clips now. By the way,

(01:36:28):
what are you doing, Michael Irvin? I forgot how bad
the whole scissors incident is, but I digress. He cut
a teammate anyway. I just feel like it's gonna end badly,
either in that way or what you just brought up,
which we haven't talked about this aspect, And this happens
sometimes with players like this, something will happen because they

(01:36:49):
are not, you know, fully in tune with the camp
routine with getting themselves ready to play, especially at his position.
How he needs to be effective and all that some
dumb injury something will happen to derail his season.

Speaker 6 (01:37:07):
You've seen it a million times with this kind of stuff.

Speaker 5 (01:37:10):
And then the one guy that actually did hold out
all the way, he went all the way right, he
finished it off.

Speaker 6 (01:37:15):
Le'Veon Bell was never the same again.

Speaker 5 (01:37:17):
I don't think that's gonna happen with Michael Parsons, but
I'm still not gonna be surprised if he ends up
getting traded.

Speaker 7 (01:37:22):
Yeah, I just I think it makes so little sense
unless they don't like good players. If you don't like
good players, then you're not interested in winning. There are
certain players you pay, and he's one of them.

Speaker 6 (01:37:32):
That's why.

Speaker 7 (01:37:33):
You know, look at these most of them, especially at
this age, like who did I just run through that
list of Are these guys bouncing off of their first
team after four or five years? Like you're telling me
the Texans are going to be interested in resigning Will Anderson?

Speaker 6 (01:37:47):
Of course they are.

Speaker 7 (01:37:48):
God's a lifetime stealer, Miles Garrett is a lifetime Brown.
There's a reason why they're there and they stay there.

Speaker 6 (01:37:55):
One of those guys play for Jerry Jones.

Speaker 7 (01:37:57):
Right, But also, who are these other elite players that
have not gotten a big fat contract from Jerry.

Speaker 6 (01:38:04):
They have, They've all gotten. Yeah, he's arguably the best
of all of them.

Speaker 5 (01:38:08):
And he's made it and he's made the whole situation
in each of those cases way more difficult than it
needed to be.

Speaker 6 (01:38:13):
And they he's never gotten a return on his investment.
And then what happened. They signed, Yeah, they signed.

Speaker 5 (01:38:19):
But what I'm saying is, like Ezekiel Elliott's the still
the best example of this and the worst player, right,
But Dak, like Dak has gotten his money. And I
know it's been injuries more than anything else, but he's
still had I mean, do you think Jerry's happy with
that contract right at this very second.

Speaker 6 (01:38:35):
I don't.

Speaker 5 (01:38:36):
It doesn't matter. It's his fault. I know, it's not
Dak's fault and it's not the injury fault. You could
have signed him to a different contract, I know, but
you keep choosing not to. And that's what I'm saying.
Never underestimate Jerry Jones's ability to screw something up.

Speaker 7 (01:38:54):
But he still signs and they still accept and they
still are there. Like CD's there, Dak's there, and pretty
soon Michael will.

Speaker 5 (01:39:00):
If you're gonna end up signing them, and you know
you're gonna end up signing them, And I think he
does because he's in charge. There's no one else that's
in charge. At the end of the day. The buck
stops with Jerry. Then why what are you doing? How
does this benefit anybody involved?

Speaker 7 (01:39:14):
Guarantee you there are people right now at this very
moment inside Cowboys headquarters walking from office to office speaking
the exact same words you just did.

Speaker 6 (01:39:25):
Yeah, like, why is he doing this?

Speaker 5 (01:39:26):
And they want to say to him, and it probably
Stephen does, somebody does, why are you He can't fire it?

Speaker 6 (01:39:31):
Well, actually he could fire his son, but he can't
fire him from the family.

Speaker 7 (01:39:34):
The success of a football team, it's always tough to
measure if you don't just go straight to the top
and say, oh, we won super Bowls. The Cowboys are
one of ten teams in the last nine years that
I have eighty six or more wins. How many of
those ten teams in those nine years, if I've calculated
it correctly, have won the Super Bowl?

Speaker 4 (01:39:54):
Nine?

Speaker 6 (01:39:55):
There's ten teams, do you think all but the Cowboys? Yes,
that is incorrect. Well, how close am I?

Speaker 11 (01:40:00):
Eight?

Speaker 2 (01:40:00):
Not?

Speaker 11 (01:40:01):
Very so?

Speaker 6 (01:40:02):
Is it four? So the Chiefs have won the Super
Bowl in the last nine years?

Speaker 4 (01:40:05):
Yes?

Speaker 6 (01:40:06):
And the Eagles have won the Super Bowl in the
last nine years.

Speaker 15 (01:40:08):
Uh huh?

Speaker 6 (01:40:09):
And the Steelers have won the Super Bowl in the
last nine years?

Speaker 12 (01:40:15):
Have they?

Speaker 11 (01:40:15):
I haven't.

Speaker 5 (01:40:16):
That's why I haven't crossed rights. Well, their last one
was like twenty ten, wasn't it two thousand and nine? Yeah,
two thousand and nine.

Speaker 6 (01:40:21):
Okay, So then I believe it's two two of ten,
those two that you mentioned, Chiefs and the Eagles. Saints
haven't won the Super Bowl?

Speaker 12 (01:40:28):
Right?

Speaker 6 (01:40:29):
Not since?

Speaker 12 (01:40:31):
Oh?

Speaker 11 (01:40:31):
Wait?

Speaker 6 (01:40:31):
Yeah, Seahawks haven't won the Super Bowl? Right not since fourteen?
Has the Vikings super Bowl win come in the last
nine years or ever? Nope?

Speaker 7 (01:40:40):
Okay, so they're out Cowboys obviously, Packers they get one
in the last nine years. No, okay, they're out. The
Bills and the Ravens, No, they don't do. The Ravens
sneak won in the last nine years, not the.

Speaker 6 (01:40:52):
Last nine years. So there you goes.

Speaker 7 (01:40:53):
So ten teams with eighty six or more wins, the
Cowboys are one of the eight in that group who've
won a ton in the regular season and have not
won the Super Bowl, and many of those teams haven't
even reached the Super Bowl, like the Cowboys. That's the
difference between have you gotten your money's worth, have you
put together good rosters?

Speaker 6 (01:41:13):
Have things not worked out?

Speaker 7 (01:41:15):
Have you made clear and obvious mistakes and you just
keep happening over and over in the postseason, like the Cowboys.
Mistakes seem dramatically different than the Ravens and Bills not
winning the Super Bowl because I'm not calling what the
Ravens and Bills doing. I'm not thinking, oh man, what
a mistake. I watched the Cowboy Chiefs and they just
keep making mistakes, right. But in the at the end
of the day, they've had basically the same decade. They've

(01:41:37):
won a lot of regular season games, they won a
bunch of divisions, they played in a bunch of playoff games.
Bills and Ravens have played in more because they win
their early playoff games more often, But they're not going
to or winning the Super Bowl, and they're.

Speaker 6 (01:41:50):
Viewed dramatically differently.

Speaker 7 (01:41:52):
They also have elite quarterbacks that no one debates about,
and Dak is like the most debated about quarterbacks.

Speaker 12 (01:41:58):
Can we take it a step further in realize that
the Cowboys haven't been to a conference title in well.

Speaker 7 (01:42:04):
I also limited it to nine years to keep the
other teams in the group. If we really want to
talk about Cowboy in aptitude, it would kind of scrap
the whole thing, because for the other teams, it's like, yeah,
for the last handful of years, we haven't gotten there.
For the Cowboys it's for the last all of the years,
and Mike haven't gotten there.

Speaker 6 (01:42:19):
Michaeh.

Speaker 5 (01:42:19):
Parsons is not one of the reasons for that. He's
the opposite. And there he was sleeping on the train.
He had to know when he crawled up there.

Speaker 6 (01:42:27):
It's not an accident. No, who, But do you think
like his agent, I think all of this.

Speaker 7 (01:42:32):
Stuff is just different than what Trade did and what
Terry did and what everybody else who's he's not so yet,
but it's gonna All this stuff is theater.

Speaker 6 (01:42:44):
He should do sit ups in his driveway with Drew Rosenhaus. Wait,
Drew's not his agent. He could be His agent is fine.
His agent's very very good. Which one does he have?
He has David Mulligetta. Is there anybody that David doesn't have?
These days? There's a few. He's doing quite well. He
hasn't right, isn't me yet?

Speaker 7 (01:43:01):
He's looking for bigger contracts. They get renegotiated far more.

Speaker 1 (01:43:04):
I want money, pay me. The A Team on Sports
Talk seven ninety Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler.

Speaker 3 (01:43:14):
The A Team now continues.

Speaker 1 (01:43:19):
Now the good, good, the bad, My good and the
ugly don't make me good.

Speaker 3 (01:43:27):
With the A Team, We're still wing you the good
the bad.

Speaker 7 (01:43:33):
Signats Segment time on a Monday brings the good, the bad,
the ugly halfway through our number three four thirty. That's
when we do it each and every weekday afternoon A
signature segment Monday's Good, Bad, ugly. The first weekend of
college football, of course, Week zero, Week one this coming weekend,
and the final weekend of the preseason winning threw out
of four in Baltimore for the Astros, and all sorts

(01:43:55):
of everything that took place. We choose from to find
the good, the bad, the ugly. I've got the ugly.
I'll go last. Cole's got the bad, He'll go second.
Ac is good, he goes first.

Speaker 5 (01:44:05):
Well, I'm gonna say post first inning, Spencer Araghay sure
looked good yesterday retiring. How many in a row was
at thirteen before he finally was hit again. But it
was what I've been looking for from him since his
return and we have not gotten. And honestly, is that
is that finale began to unfold yesterday afternoon. I was like, oh, man,

(01:44:29):
here we go again. But he really buckled down. He
seemed to kind of get into a groove. I'm hoping
that that's a sign of things to come, because for
the most part, after that Rocky starts the game.

Speaker 6 (01:44:43):
He did look very good yesterday.

Speaker 7 (01:44:44):
Throw strikes and see what happens, and he did. He
walked ten batters in the first three appearances since coming
back from the injured list, and that was just over
thirteen and two thirds innings. He walked no batters in
the game this weekend, five and two thirds to give
up six hits. He gave up the two runs, like
you mentioned, the last of which coming in his final

(01:45:05):
two thirds of an inning worth of work trying to
get through six innings. Totally agree it's a must, especially
with how they've unfortunately, and there's no fault of their own, really,
but how the rotation is set up, where from ber
Valdez and Hunter Brown pitched back to back, and then
there's Alexander and you're likely to get six innings or
more out of each of those three if you're sticking

(01:45:27):
with the six man rotation, which I think is extremely foolish.
If the Astros do, and I wish they roster wise
could figure out a way to make it work better.
But then you're going three starts in a row like
you did this weekend, mccullor's Javier Arraghetty.

Speaker 6 (01:45:42):
That's how to kill a bullpen.

Speaker 7 (01:45:44):
Somebody's got to give them length, and at least this
weekend you could say Spencer Araghetty did. Maybe mccullor's line
looks a little bit better. I don't know that he
goes any deeper into the game. If Cam Smith makes
that catch certainly changes the dynamic of the game. I
don't know if it changes length. It's his day, and
then obviously Christian Javier with thirty pitch innings to start

(01:46:05):
his day, well, it ended his day after two innings.
I would second that I'd rubber stamp that that was
a very good in start number four since return for
Arraghetty more like that, please, and heck, the Astros were
scoring runs in bunches. You figured I only gave up
two runs. I pitched into the sixth put that in
the win column would have had it been Saturday, Friday

(01:46:27):
or Thursday.

Speaker 6 (01:46:28):
What's the bad? Cole?

Speaker 12 (01:46:29):
Listen and this isn't bad anymore simply because of you
get buyer's remorse and a little bit of a recoup
in the process. But I don't know if you guys
have talked to me about the twenty twenty two NFL draft.
I said on multiple occasions the John Metchi pick, even
though I am in Alabama grad, I understand the pushback.
I understood the pushback on the Christian Harris pick. I
understood the pushback on a lot of picks, even though

(01:46:52):
I agreed with several of them. The one that I
could not stomach when it was made and continue to
complain about for years end, was the Kenyan Green pick
at number fifteen.

Speaker 6 (01:47:03):
Never got behind it, never thought it was a good move.

Speaker 12 (01:47:06):
You should never draft an inter your offensive lineman unless
you know for a fact they are a sure fire,
cannot miss future Canton bound player.

Speaker 6 (01:47:15):
And he's not going to Canton. I don't even know
if he's playing in the NFL.

Speaker 12 (01:47:18):
This year because according to reports, even after being traded
at Philadelphia working with Jeff Staltlin, he is being weighed
as part of the roster cutdowns by the Eagles. And
what makes that trade just so much worse is you
look at the names that were available on the market
when you were picking me at number fifteen.

Speaker 6 (01:47:36):
Could have gone with the offensive lineman. Tyler Smith was available.

Speaker 12 (01:47:39):
He's gone on to become an All Pro caliber offensive
tackle for the Dallas Cowboys. Could have gone with another Tyler.
Tyler Linderbaum had center needs that offseason. He's become one
of the best centers in the game within the last
three years. You could have gone with the tight end
long term, not worried about Dalton Schultz, not worried about trying.

Speaker 6 (01:47:56):
To bring in another name.

Speaker 12 (01:47:58):
Trey McBride was available, He just got paid it as
one of the more dominant tight ends in the game.
But you took it into your offensive lineman traded him
for CJ. Gardner Johnson. Really that was more so at
cap cut bust from Philadelphia side and a eight round pick,
all for him to be out of the NFL basically
within four years. It was a bad pick. Then it

(01:48:19):
certainly is a bad pick. Now, ultimately, this may be
one of the worst picks in Houston Texans franchise history.

Speaker 7 (01:48:24):
It definitely would fall under the Casario umbrella as probably
the worst draft day decision making because not only did
they take him to fifteen, they moved back from thirteen
to fifteen, and I know they added some assets that
ultimately moved into some other deals that they made. But
the players taken at thirteen and fourteen were better than
any player You just mentioned Jordan Davis and Kyle Hamilton,

(01:48:46):
and you had me all along the way until I'm
sure Clinton knows you lost me when they said you
said they could have taken Trey McBride. No, they could
not have. You're talking about the fifteenth pick. You want
to take Trey McBride. Forty other picks were made before
Trey McBride was selected. And I know, oh, especially with
fantasy football on us, he's going to be great again.
He's gonna have one hundred and thirty five targets, he's

(01:49:06):
gonna have one hundred and five catches. He's the most
capable receiver of a Kyler Murray pass that Kyler Murray has.

Speaker 6 (01:49:14):
He's great. I don't discount his talent.

Speaker 7 (01:49:17):
I discount the need to take a tight end at
fifteen pretty much period. But your point is well taken,
and this is not unexpected. What was unexpected is people thinking, man,
the Eagles are going to find a way to make
this work with Kenyan Green.

Speaker 6 (01:49:31):
No, they're not.

Speaker 5 (01:49:31):
He's not.

Speaker 7 (01:49:31):
He's just unfortunately, whether injuries have sapped him of some
of the abilities he's showed at Texas A and M,
or it's just he simply can't quite figure out how
to get to that level. He's not an NFL caliber
top eight lineman. That's why he's no longer a Texan
and now no longer soon to be no longer an Eagle.
And credit to CASSERI, at least this past six months

(01:49:54):
dealing with Kenyon Green, he was able to flip that
into a player who is going to help this team
this upcoming season. We just don't know when yet, but
expect to see CJ. Gardner Johnson on the Texans initial
fifty three man roster and we'll see if that means
he is ready to play in Week one, or merely
close enough to being ready that they didn't want to
put him on a list that would prevent him from
playing in any of the first four games.

Speaker 6 (01:50:17):
My ugly is also football.

Speaker 7 (01:50:19):
I won't pat the Browns for the incredible performance their
team put together this preseason. I don't give Texas. We're
two hours and forty minutes into the show. Has any
one of the three of Us or sam our guest
or Sparks via replay, even though he talks Astros mentioned
the final score of the Texans Lions game. I don't

(01:50:42):
think so well, because there's no reason too so I
applaud us for that. That's why I will not applaud
the Cleveland Browns for their performance during this twenty twenty
five preseason. It was quite good. I mean, they played
three games, they won three games. Sure, that's a very
good indicator of where they're headed. It also means there's
no drama there, and that's where the ugly comes in.

(01:51:05):
I know, it seems like it's not really coming from them,
so it's not really putting it on them. But I
don't know that any other franchise would have pushed would
have been able to capture the negativity in this situation
had he been had both Dylan Gabriel and Shouldeur Sanders
been picked, by some other team without a quarterback. I
don't think this would have ever gone this way. It

(01:51:27):
is ugly how everybody else is creating this ridiculous non
story of their fourth best quarterback, Shoudeur Sanders.

Speaker 6 (01:51:39):
It is totally ridiculous.

Speaker 7 (01:51:40):
How much discussion angst narrative, coaches getting questions about how
he's torpedoing his career, a narrative that you're holding him back,
you're making it worse, you're not trying to develop him.

Speaker 6 (01:51:52):
Total complete, utter nonsense.

Speaker 7 (01:51:54):
I think should Door is handling everything miraculously well amidst
it all.

Speaker 6 (01:51:59):
But he's out.

Speaker 7 (01:52:00):
Even on a team with bad quarterbacks, he's one of them.
He's just more bad today than Flacco, Pickett and Gabriel.

Speaker 6 (01:52:08):
So he's fourth.

Speaker 7 (01:52:09):
I don't know why it is so hard for people
to under what an awful quarterback room. He's ahead of Deshaun,
who's hurt. It's five o'clock almost somewhere not here.

Speaker 3 (01:52:20):
The A Team on Sports Talk seven ninety, the third.

Speaker 7 (01:52:29):
Of four hours here on the A Team on a Monday,
back from the weekend edition. The news about Joe Mixon
came down a little bit earlier today that the Texans
intend on placing him on the reserve NFI list as
the fifty three man initial fifty three man roster gets
put together by three pm tomorrow. Teams will then begin
again on Wednesday signing players to their practice squad eleven

(01:52:51):
AM when they can start doing that and obviously take
a look around the league for other players that might
be available to sign them and then reconstruct their fifty
three man roster. But unavailable for the first four games,
though cam begin practicing and could be available beginning after
that fourth game. That's the situation with Joe Mixon and
his roster spot. We mentioned Trey Hendrickson with the Bengals

(01:53:13):
getting a deal done, and just for the particulars of
it may have been described differently earlier when we saw
the news, He's basically just getting a whole lot of
money for this year. He does not have any future
years under contract. He will in fact be playing his
final year with the Bengals under this current contract, but
instead of making the fourteen million he was due, he
will be making thirty million with a big bump, for

(01:53:37):
just this season. But when it's that amount, it certainly
goes a long way for the player, who then knows
well I can still sign a contract next year with
them or somebody else, and now I've already gotten a
huge bump to kind of maybe offset what I may
or may not be able to get one year further
into my career. Terry McLaurin agreed to terms on his
long term deal, longer term deal with the Commanders earlier today,

(01:54:00):
and obviously we focused in on the fact that Michael
Parsons and the Cowboys aren't there yet and don't appear
anywhere close to there yet. Preseason wrapped up over the weekend,
and Thursday and Friday of opening weekend is now just
a few days away, just ten days away Thursday and
Friday football, and then the weekend brings us the Texans
and the Rams. Rams had quarterback Matthew Stafford in eleven

(01:54:25):
on eleven drills today and Sean McVay saying after practice
that unless something unforeseen happens between now and September seventh,
he doesn't see any scenario where he is not starting
for the Rams against the Texans in that afternoon game
opening weekend. Not necessarily the way they would have wanted
a camp to go for a guy entering his eighteenth

(01:54:47):
season A thirty seven year old quarterback who's I'm sure
going to be super excited and very quickly in tune
with where to find DeVante Adams along with Pooka and Akua.
They've resigned Karen Williams. They seem like this year another
year where people are kind of forgetting about the Rams.
The Rams are going to the playoffs again this year
and opening your season on the road at the Rams

(01:55:09):
not ideal.

Speaker 6 (01:55:10):
This is a good football team, Yeah, I'm not.

Speaker 5 (01:55:13):
I'm a little nervous about this. Anytime you're not opening
at home, it's just like dicey, what about if you
open it?

Speaker 6 (01:55:20):
Indy? But okay, they've done that before where they should
have won, and did that last year they won. How
did it go though? Did you feel confident they were
halfway to their two and zho start.

Speaker 2 (01:55:32):
Exactly?

Speaker 7 (01:55:33):
I you know, they won that game ironically enough today
to say because Joe Mixon carried the ball late in
that game.

Speaker 6 (01:55:41):
Those two late carries put the game away. Yep, I remember, well,
I don't.

Speaker 7 (01:55:46):
He only ran for one hundred and fifty nine yards
that day what would be then and still the most
he's run for in a game.

Speaker 5 (01:55:53):
Great run defense, Indy I'm sure they'll be spectacular again
this year. Stafford's gonna be okay, then, doctor Wexlay, He'll
be okay to start the season.

Speaker 7 (01:56:02):
That back injury would worry me a great deal for
Is he going to be available to throw five hundred
passes as your start seventeen times, to be available in
the playoffs?

Speaker 5 (01:56:10):
Is he going to be available in the second half?
He'll be all The same thing you just said applies
to them. Yeah, they're starting home. Yeah, it's the opening season.

Speaker 6 (01:56:17):
You know all that.

Speaker 5 (01:56:18):
You want to go up against that Texans pass rush
in Week one when your quarterback's got a back injury.
Will Anderson Junior, daneil Hunter and whoever else wants to
get into the backfield.

Speaker 6 (01:56:29):
They're absolutely very aware of it, and they want to
kill him.

Speaker 7 (01:56:33):
Well, Stafford played in every game last year until the
finale when they didn't need him. They also started one
in four last year and still won ten games and
went to the postage.

Speaker 5 (01:56:42):
Well, they're starting zero to one this year because he's
gonna die I figuratively, of course.

Speaker 6 (01:56:48):
The Texans they've knocked out Will Levis a couple of times.
One time they like to they knock out a lot
of Titans quarterbacks and then they stand over them and
take fake selfies.

Speaker 7 (01:57:00):
I don't I don't think teams are they're gonna lose
their quarterback necessary, like in the time that CJ's here,
and this is terrible for me to ask him. I'm
off of remembering it, like the Jets have hurt him
and sent him to the sidelines. Like the Tecans aren't
sending guys out of the game all that often, are they.
I mean, I guess we count Anthony Richardson, well he's
tapped out.

Speaker 6 (01:57:20):
Yeah, this is a wounded animal, though.

Speaker 7 (01:57:23):
Yeah, I'm just thinking, like, how do you how do
you manage going on the field for seventy five snaps
for eighteen weeks?

Speaker 6 (01:57:30):
He lets alone, how much hit it? And you're getting
this happening.

Speaker 5 (01:57:32):
Yeah, this is as much about the condition of Stafford
entering the season as it is a fresh pack.

Speaker 6 (01:57:38):
I mean, these guys, it's just to me, it's totally that.

Speaker 7 (01:57:40):
And he is not I don't know the number of
hits he's taken in the last basically his rams years,
I would say, but he doesn't get sacked all that
often for a.

Speaker 6 (01:57:49):
Guy who drops back and throws the ball. He knows
when to get rid of it.

Speaker 7 (01:57:51):
He's got a great clock, he's obviously experienced, he's got
a quick trigger like he has managed to keep from
being clobbered over and over and over again throughout it
this late stage of his career, during these four years
with the Rams, and they have a decent line in
front of him.

Speaker 6 (01:58:08):
It's gotten better.

Speaker 7 (01:58:09):
They've had, they had some they had to rework at
a couple of times, but I do think I do
agree it's gotten a little bit better. It's great for
the Texans to come into this game presumably fresh and healthy.
Christian Harris appears to be ready to go for this
one all but CJ. Gardner Johnson, essentially of those that
matter most seem to be ready to go. I'm not
sure where we kind of envisioned Deniko Autrey's place on
this team. So I don't want to discount the fact

(01:58:30):
that he's here. But I don't go into these games
considering the other eight or nine players they have in
their front and think they miss him at all. I mean,
they're extremely capable and they just simply don't need him.
It's nice to have, and I'm sure when others get
hurt or Hill will be nice to have, but he
could easily be a player, and I don't really know
the health status of him, but being on the pup list,

(01:58:51):
one of the five players that remain on the pup
list also through camp, he's one of them.

Speaker 6 (01:58:56):
He doesn't have to be put on the.

Speaker 7 (01:58:57):
Active roster, but obviously they'd be game were to be
unavailable for Well, it's crazy because all the question marks
on the offensive side, and now with the running back situation,
it just it does feel like the defense is an
embarrassment of riches.

Speaker 5 (01:59:12):
And not just riches but also depth, like guys that
aren't going to be the same caliber as the guys
that maybe would go down to it would be injury.
But like you just said, that's another example of there's
there's just so much talent on that side of the
football that can get the job done.

Speaker 7 (01:59:28):
Yeah, everywhere on the front front seven, linebackers, ends, and tackles,
they're very well equipped to handle whatever happens during the
course of a game or during the course of a season,
from a turning to the next guy in line. In
the secondary, it's not quite like that, especially since they're
already down a safety. I think pretty much across the board.
They it would be nice if those guys stayed on

(01:59:48):
the field. I don't think they want Jalen wanted Jalen
Smith to immediately become their next best corner, but he
very well might be. Miles Bryants probably next in line
and certainly makes the team because of it. And I
think Tremon Smith makes the team because I think he
will be their kick returner in addition to providing them
depth as a corner. Jimmy Ward's another guy still in
the puplish D'Angelo ross. I'm appreciative of his ability to

(02:00:13):
step in when asked, but you really don't want him
on the field, and even that showed this last game
against the backups for the Detroit Lions. I think Arthur
Mallette is a perfectly capable player as a reserve. I
don't know that they can afford to keep him, only
because they might have to keep Bryant because he plays
so many other places, and they have to keep potentially

(02:00:33):
Jalen Mills and Jalen Smith or Jalen Reid excuse me,
probably is healthy enough to make the fifty three. And
that's just one more spot that eliminates a one four
Mallett very difficult for me even and I've put it together.
The initial fifty three similarly very difficult, as Demigo Ryans
indicated today, to put together the fifty three the rookies.

Speaker 6 (02:00:54):
That will matter on offense. Football at five is next.
We focus on that.

Speaker 3 (02:01:01):
The A teen on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (02:01:07):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the eighteen.

Speaker 7 (02:01:13):
A nothing fine and they're talking football here on the eighteen.
We do it each and every weekday afternoon at five o'clock,
the final hour of our show that's on each and
every weekday afternoon two.

Speaker 6 (02:01:29):
To six the eighteen.

Speaker 7 (02:01:30):
Wex ac Cole here with you this afternoon actually went
into this segment talking quite a bit of roster manipulation
for the Texans, making some educated guesses on what might
take place there. Did have a chance to catch up
with the head coach today. I'll have a chance to
talk with both he and some players and the general manager.
A Wednesday morning tomorrow official cutdown day to the initial

(02:01:54):
fifty three man roster, and everybody team in the league
has to get there by three o'clock tomorrow, next twenty hours.
They'll have to sift through what's available to them at
eleven am on Wednesday, can begin signing players to the
practice squads. We'll talk to Nick Casseo early on Wednesday
morning and Demiko Rans and the players a little bit

(02:02:15):
later on in the morning, all in advance of the
Wednesday edition of the A Team. But our conversation with
Demiko Ryans today, naturally much of it centered around roster
moves rather than anything that took place in their preseason
game from this past Saturday.

Speaker 6 (02:02:28):
He obviously spoke after that preseason.

Speaker 7 (02:02:30):
Game already, and we all know what that game is
about for many of the players fighting for roster spots,
fighting to put better things or more things on tape.
I think mission accomplished on that front. Another game where
for the most part, the Texans came out very, very healthy,
and have done so throughout their preseason game activity. But
today talking to dimiico O Rans right out of the
gate about the difficulty of what lies in front of

(02:02:52):
he and the general manager Nick Cassa and everyone in
the personnel department, and the heartbreak that goes with it
for the players on the upcoming roster moves.

Speaker 8 (02:03:00):
Yeah, well, we'll give you guys an update when the
time come. Most of our transactions will happen tomorrow, so
it's nothing to update roster wise, so that everybody's looking
for right now, there won't be a big update roster
wise is right now. We're still working through some things
collectively with me and myself and Nick still working through.
There's still a lot of decisions to be made here, no.

Speaker 7 (02:03:21):
Kidding, my apologies. Nothing informative there. I expected it to
be something different.

Speaker 6 (02:03:27):
I was on the call. I just thought it was
was something else. I should not have called for that.

Speaker 7 (02:03:31):
As Gary Kubiak, one of the head coaches almost as
good in Texans history as Demiko, rans would say, that's
on me.

Speaker 6 (02:03:39):
We'll get to the rookies in a second.

Speaker 7 (02:03:40):
But we talked about it with Sam Warren earlier of
the Chronicle and obviously quite a bit today with the
Joe Mixon news. Demiko's thoughts on the group they currently
have in the running back round.

Speaker 8 (02:03:50):
We know what both guys are capable of. You also
throw throw Damien in the mix. We have a very
deep in a running back room. What wood he has
been able to show throughout the preseason. It's just a
lot of players that can provide a ton of debt
for us and guys that can really get us through
the season.

Speaker 7 (02:04:10):
Anything happened in preseason games or during practice that gave
you any different positive or different negative thought about Chubb?
Dare Damien, Woody Marx or Juwar Jordan.

Speaker 12 (02:04:26):
Cole Actually I felt a lot more confident in Nick
Chubb by the end of training camp that at the beginning.
But everyone else now it's the exact same. I tend
to feel the same way.

Speaker 7 (02:04:35):
I wondered if at any point in this camp they
would be able to do more with Woody further up
the depth chart, considering the slow pace that they were
bringing Damien back with and the obvious concern about trying
to push a number one like Nick Chubb, But it
never really came to pass. I thought wood he did
everything he could do with the opportunities he was given
in the preseason games and certainly in the joint practices.

Speaker 6 (02:04:58):
I think he did what you would expect and maybe
what they expected.

Speaker 7 (02:05:02):
He showed that he has a place on this team,
just probably at the back end of the jepth chart currently,
but I think could fill in when necessary. I still
think they have an interesting question to answer about Juwar Jordan,
because he's just so different than the other running backs
they have on the roster. Obviously, there are reasons why
he runs behind all of them on the depth chart
one through five.

Speaker 6 (02:05:21):
He's five, but I wouldn't.

Speaker 7 (02:05:23):
I don't think it's crazy to think he made himself
available to them. But more than likely he gets released
initially with the hopes of bringing him back on the
practice squad, which I do think will happen. And I
think because of the Joe Mixon situation, that guaranteed and
cemented a spot for Damian Pierce, who, quite honestly, it
was a nothing training camp for him other than trying
to get healthy.

Speaker 6 (02:05:43):
And that's not his fault.

Speaker 7 (02:05:44):
It's just the timeline of when he was going to
recover that he didn't prove anything, he didn't show anything.
I don't think we've seen him behind this offense, in
this offense, behind this offensive line that gives you any
indication one way or the other that he's gonna help
this team. He had so much many big explosive I
can't believe this runs last year. It kind of takes

(02:06:06):
away from all the other things that just didn't happen
last year. They needed a very capable too, and I
don't know that they had that, and obviously the very
same thing is true without mixing.

Speaker 6 (02:06:16):
Behind Chubb, they absolutely need that.

Speaker 7 (02:06:18):
So I don't think that they have any more questions
today than they did before we knew the news about mixing,
because they knew the news about mixing for several weeks
at a minimum.

Speaker 5 (02:06:29):
I know that you weren't as big a fan of
Damian Pierce as far as what he did his rookie
season when we would talk about it last year. Do
you think any of the changes on the offensive staff
could lend itself to him being a.

Speaker 6 (02:06:48):
Bright spot this year that you're maybe not expecting.

Speaker 12 (02:06:51):
I know.

Speaker 7 (02:06:52):
I mean, that's a very pleasant path you tried to,
you know, he and man, here's the cart. You hop
back in there. I'll pull it along. You can follow right,
I'm gonna here's there's two ways to go, but I'm
gonna take you this way.

Speaker 6 (02:07:02):
We're going to the right.

Speaker 15 (02:07:04):
The right.

Speaker 7 (02:07:05):
It says, say something nice about Damian Ferris all you
have to It's it's so easy.

Speaker 6 (02:07:09):
I told you how to do it. Just follow along,
and I still won't.

Speaker 7 (02:07:14):
I think his biggest issue won't ever change, and it's
more of a some guys havebit some guys don't. He
runs as hard as anybody in that body will ever see.

Speaker 6 (02:07:25):
I love that.

Speaker 7 (02:07:25):
I think he has creative with how he tries to
gain yards. It's also dangerous because I think it exposes
the ball. But I don't think he has real good
cutting vision, Like I don't think he sees the play
quickly enough to where here's where I should go. But
if it's not there, I could go there. All that

(02:07:46):
you're you're gonna know that before you even snap it.
You've run these plays so many times. You know what
the playbook is. You know where these cut lanes could
should be might end up being. I don't think that's
quite there. Some guys are just beyond belief good at it.
Arian Foster is one of them. Other guys, it is
more of a struggle to find it. There are gonna
be plays where he makes where I don't think there's
another running back on this team would make. But then

(02:08:06):
there's a bunch of others where he's had seven carries
in a game and he's gotten eleven yards. And I
think it's part him and part their line. This scheme,
the way they've shown to be able to block should
be good. For everybody him too. I'm being a little
hard on a guy who I mean, think about his
carries last year. If I told you he had forty
carries last year, which would be accurate, how much activity

(02:08:28):
was in in the backfield during those forty carries where
he had nowhere to go, where he had to make
a cut right the moment he was five yards behind.
It happened too often to him. It happened to often
get to him, The defender gets to him. There's only
so much you can do. He did a good job
saying some nice things at the outset before you buried him. Yeah,
and because his you know, like it's more his rookie
years now pretty far removed his second year, where he

(02:08:50):
was still used quite a bit when he was healthy.
I mean, that's what that's my biggest problem. You can't
have a guy having hundred and forty carries and averaging
less than three to carry. That can be only so
I mean, it can be the lion's fault, it can
be the O c's fault. It definitely was the offensive
line coach's fault. But still that is just such an
incredibly low number one thing. I did have a chance

(02:09:10):
to ask Demiko about because I think it's obvious, but
the three of us have talked about it for weeks,
probably for months since draft day, learned a little bit
more about the other rookie. I think we knew about
Noel and Higgins and where they would fit on this team,
and then learn a lot more about Tay Ersrie. The
three offensive rookies. I think it's very reasonable two of
them are actually on the field for snap number one
Higgins and Ursery, and Ursery will be on the field

(02:09:32):
for every single play, hopefully as the starting left tackle,
and even though he's behind Christian Kirk, I think Jalenole
will make a big impact.

Speaker 6 (02:09:39):
But specifically I asked Amiko his comfort level.

Speaker 7 (02:09:42):
How comfortable is he with when September seventh rolls around
that he's going to have these guys on the field
and able to help this team right out of the gate.
The three rookies they drafted, the three first picks they
had this year, all on offense.

Speaker 8 (02:09:55):
I'm really really fired up about, you know, the outlook
of those rookies. Tay has done a really nice job
being competitive every week getting better. Both receivers have shined
and gotten better as camp has went along. So I'm
excited to see these guys in action, not shining away
from throwing them out there. I think all three guys
can help us. They can be the type of offense

(02:10:17):
that I expect us to be. So I'm not shying
away for putting those guys out there. I think those
three rookies will definitely shine for us.

Speaker 7 (02:10:24):
Simply put, he didn't have to say it in the
way that he did. He chose to, and I'm taking
it very much the way I think he said it,
not shying away of putting those guys out there. He's
going to rotate the wide receivers, and that's a given.
Rookies do that all the time. I don't think he
says that if their intentions weren't starting, weren't that tay
Erser is the starting left tackle.

Speaker 6 (02:10:44):
I don't.

Speaker 7 (02:10:45):
It's not in stone. Nobody's announced it. They won't announce
it either. The un will be there and it will
be unofficial. But it's nice to have Cam Robinson on
the roster and you can figure out how you want
to use him, and if you think they're are spots
where it might make sense to have him play some
left tackle. I suppose but everything I've seen and everything

(02:11:07):
they've said they match. They've drafted their left tackle of
the future, and his future starts on September seventh.

Speaker 5 (02:11:15):
Yeah, I'm if that's what ends up happening, then it's
it doesn't. It doesn't fix everything that's gone wrong the
past couple of seasons, particularly last year.

Speaker 6 (02:11:25):
But it's a very good start.

Speaker 5 (02:11:26):
It's the most important start, and it would be an
absolute I don't want to call a steal. I'm trying
to think of the best word considering a fine traded
this Offsea.

Speaker 7 (02:11:36):
Well, I would call it a find in the fact
that we spent all this time. Oh, the Texans have
that pick late in the first round, Well, who might
they take? We put up graphics, we did every single Friday.
We had five offensive linemen there, and all those players
got drafted between then and forty eight, and then they
drafted tay Ursie at forty eight. Simmons was drafted, and

(02:11:56):
you know, Zabel was drafted, and on and on. Obviously
Kevin Banks was this I believe was a very good
draft for this position. And yet they held fast on
the value that they felt was necessary for who they
wanted where they wanted to select him and hopefully it
will work out twenty seconds or less. Is it a
good thing or a bad thing? If tay Ersrie is

(02:12:17):
their best offensive lineman in twenty twenty five, that's.

Speaker 6 (02:12:22):
A loaded question.

Speaker 5 (02:12:24):
I still think it's a good thing because he plays
the most important position. But you don't know where the
bar is. The bar is not nine and seven.

Speaker 7 (02:12:31):
I mean, if he's their best, does that mean the
other four guys were terrible? Or does that mean he's awesome?
No comment until further notice.

Speaker 6 (02:12:38):
No comment, just sniff if he's in the room.

Speaker 3 (02:12:43):
The a t on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (02:14:03):
Most first days have now happened, even those that are
collegiately learning, that happened earlier today for many of those
that are doing that college thing.

Speaker 5 (02:14:13):
Unless you don't have a Monday class like mine, Oh
maybe you're a two more day of summer.

Speaker 6 (02:14:17):
Maybe you're a Tuesday Thursday kind of person. That's your call.
Did you like those more? Those they were awesome? You're
lying well.

Speaker 7 (02:14:27):
When Thursdays three to four thirty class concluded, the next
class you took was Tuesday, nine am on Tuesday, that
sounds pretty awesome.

Speaker 6 (02:14:36):
Yeah, I do that. I think two.

Speaker 7 (02:14:37):
Semesters, two different semesters over the four years that I
was there, schedule kind of worked out.

Speaker 5 (02:14:43):
Class may those were long days, but that's fine. I
was on my way back to Houston asap. Every single time, Yeah,
I did not have a girlfriend here.

Speaker 6 (02:14:52):
Didn't do that, just stay there, had a girlfriend there,
worked out fine. Oh you didn't have to go to
Houston because your girlfriend wasn't in Houston.

Speaker 7 (02:15:00):
In the same city I was in. We went to
college at the same time together. Also not the missus.
I want to mention.

Speaker 3 (02:15:07):
Just burying the lead.

Speaker 6 (02:15:09):
Well, I mean, man probably would just assume, oh, you
had a girlfriend in college. You guys know that. Every
time I started talking about this subject got married to
He's always like, Eh, my stories are boring because I
don't have any that's.

Speaker 5 (02:15:19):
I didn't even tell a story. Who you're trying to
the most story you've ever gone exactly? I I dated
this Robin know about this other woman. She's even better.

Speaker 6 (02:15:31):
Are they friends? They're not friends, They just don't know it.
They hate each other.

Speaker 7 (02:15:34):
They don't hate each other. They had a cat fight,
they didn't but not film it, okay or happened. I
was going to say, with college football back with us,
they for different teams. No, with them, I was going
to talk about something completely different than the ladies of life.

Speaker 6 (02:15:52):
What's a wildcat fight?

Speaker 15 (02:15:54):
You know?

Speaker 5 (02:15:54):
Just like Pellow Doublin No, like what we saw it
in Dublin. Well, they're not family, so I hunt each
other and it.

Speaker 6 (02:16:00):
Could have happened. We don't know. We don't know what's
his life.

Speaker 7 (02:16:03):
He's hiding things from my sac apparently every five or
six years on the air on the A Team.

Speaker 6 (02:16:08):
I'll give a little bit. You did this by sliding
it under the radar. By the way, it wasn't my wife.
You can't just do that and expect us just to
sit here and not react.

Speaker 7 (02:16:16):
In college's story, dated a girl most of the years
I was in college, which was four years. Was still
with her after college, we did not get married, so
a long term I met Robin and we started dating
and dated for several years and then we did get
married and we just celebrated our wedding anniversary Saturday night

(02:16:36):
in Austin.

Speaker 6 (02:16:36):
Happy anniversary. Another buried lead. It was nice. Did you
go to dinner? We did go to dinner. What'd you
get her? I got her a twelve inch meatball sub no, no, no,
not for dinner, which I also got two slices myself.
It was awesome. What you goros?

Speaker 11 (02:16:54):
No?

Speaker 7 (02:16:55):
It was really good pizza Austin Special even have one
hear in Houston.

Speaker 5 (02:16:59):
I dated the girl I thought I was going to marry.
The first two years of college are already been, and
she absolutely crushed me. And I became the monster you
see before you today. And so the next four years
I was not dating anybody, or you were dating everybody.
I wouldn't say, you know what, I'm not going to
do that.

Speaker 6 (02:17:17):
I'm not doing that. I didn't know how it was
gonna how we were gonna get out of this. I
was dating them, Bob, are we now out of this?

Speaker 5 (02:17:24):
We back to football. I can't say my dating stories
because I want to keep my job. You're married, You're married,
I'm married. We're all happy.

Speaker 6 (02:17:30):
Is that not correct?

Speaker 4 (02:17:31):
Yes?

Speaker 6 (02:17:32):
Most of the time. What you won't I'm trying to
get us out of this. I'm very happy. Right now
at five, we're talking about dinner.

Speaker 5 (02:17:41):
Right now, I e your most controversial conversation you have
with your wife every day?

Speaker 6 (02:17:49):
What are we eating? I don't know what do you want?

Speaker 7 (02:17:51):
It's more like we've now gotten to the point we're
all asked and they have an answer. I'm like, awesome, done.

Speaker 5 (02:17:57):
The most boringly happy couple I've ever met right here,
So one half of it I want to mention.

Speaker 7 (02:18:02):
Over the course of this hour, we will be discussing
many many different things, maybe the things we just discussed
that have nothing to do with sports, but because your
loyal listeners, you're gonna remember it. And the final segment
of the showmen who have catfights over wex which will
give you the ability to win tickets. We've got a
football game over at td ECU coming up on Thursday night,

(02:18:23):
another go around for Willie Fritz and the Cougars. We've
got a pair of tickets to go see the Cougars
take on SFA. It's the Lone Star Stampede home opener.
Cougars Uhcougars dot com slash tickets. If you'd like tickets,
you can call seventy one to three go Koug's to
get your tickets. Come early, be loud, wear Red, Cougars

(02:18:43):
and SFA Thursday night. So we've got a pair of
tickets to give away. In the final segment, we'll also
have another concert coming to town. You know about it,
where the party at Tours coming to the Woodlands Pavilion
on September fourth. That's Nelly, that's jar Rule that's Eve
and tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster dot com.
Final segment of the show the payoff on those tickets.
Who've been listening to the program, you can call in

(02:19:04):
and there's your opportunity to win them. And we're also
in full blown college football mode here in this family
of networks s iHeartRadio. We have the University of Houston Cougar's,
we have the University of Texas Longhorns, and we have
the LSU Tigers. Willie Fritz met with the media earlier
today his first game week presser, and he will host

(02:19:24):
his first radio show, weekly radio show tonight. We'll have
that for you on KPRC starting at seven o'clock Thursday night.
Two more college football coaches shows. Also, we will have
the Cougar's football game of course, right over there on
KPRC coverage beginning after we wrap up here at six
o'clock with the A team. It will begin there the

(02:19:46):
football coverage at six o'clock, then at seven o'clock and
eight o'clock. Back here on Sports Talk seven ninety coach Sarkeesian,
the UT Football Coaches Show at seven Coach Oh's former school,
it's Brian Kelly he will do what very few coaches
have done recently at LSU. He'll have his coaches show
on Thursday night in anticipation of starting the season one

(02:20:09):
and zero, which they have not been able to do
for half of a decade. And then, of course we
have the games this weekend. We have both games ut
early ten o'clock coverage time starts right here on KBM
they're playing the Buckeyes, and then five thirty are coverage
of LSU and Clemson on the road at Clemson that

(02:20:29):
begins at five thirty on KPERC.

Speaker 6 (02:20:32):
So did she ever say call me kitty cat?

Speaker 13 (02:20:35):
Kid Cat?

Speaker 7 (02:20:36):
I honestly, as much as James, Jane Seymour has made
a career out of being a legend.

Speaker 6 (02:20:42):
Her best role ever. I mean, I don't even want
to debate it. And she's like pervert, like she killed
it in so.

Speaker 7 (02:20:48):
Awes very few lines, not even that many scenes, and
none of the scenes that the first time we meet her,
when she's trying to take Claire away from the person
she's just she already gives him the once over.

Speaker 5 (02:21:02):
She lets him know how many faith how many faithful
years she had with Christopher walking two of them.

Speaker 7 (02:21:08):
Then she watches the football game and she almost spills
her teeth. She wants uh the redhead to get her
Long Island Fred all fixed up, and then dinner m m.
She has not very pleasant things to say about mother
or the son who doesn't like.

Speaker 6 (02:21:25):
To put her bed because she kept calling him names.

Speaker 7 (02:21:27):
She did uh then obviously she uh. She and her
cans went to see Owen said.

Speaker 6 (02:21:34):
Of a gun you where is she? She still in
the house. What is the matter with you? What's the
matter with you?

Speaker 12 (02:21:39):
Now?

Speaker 6 (02:21:39):
After that?

Speaker 7 (02:21:40):
Is that pretty much it for I know she appeared
in the movie, but that was it for her parts
of the movie. She showed up at the wedding, and
she might have been seen here when they were shopping
for flowers. That was pretty much it, right, It's you
know what this makes me realize. And but what you
really pointed out was why it was so good. She
could have just said the lines. The delivery of the
manner in which she requested how he say things.

Speaker 6 (02:22:02):
To her was brilliant. It made me remember only an
elite actress could have pulled that off.

Speaker 5 (02:22:06):
That's right, because she's the same actress that was in
such a sad romantic epic movie. Such as Somewhere in
Time with the recently departed Christopher Reeve back in nineteen
seventy nine.

Speaker 6 (02:22:18):
Great soundtrack too. Do you know what that movie's about?
Have you ever seen it? Christopher Reeve? He was a
Superman right, yes? And that's it.

Speaker 7 (02:22:30):
No other roles, no other movies, an other TV Come on, man, seriously,
he was awesome. He was nothing, he was nothing. He
was nothing without Superman.

Speaker 6 (02:22:41):
Superman was nothing without him.

Speaker 7 (02:22:43):
He was nothing without Gene Hackman. Superman was nothing without him.
You know how any Superman's there have been without him? Literally,
Superman is absolutely something without him.

Speaker 5 (02:22:52):
Within six seconds of each other, it's to the worst
statements I've ever heard on this show.

Speaker 7 (02:22:56):
I don't like that take. That's a bad take. That
take is piping hot and you will get run soon.
But back to Jane, a bond girl on top of
all of this.

Speaker 5 (02:23:06):
Big fan, big fan of Jane Seymour. Where she's still
in the house.

Speaker 6 (02:23:12):
It's fun. You lock it up.

Speaker 7 (02:23:14):
In case you missed, it will come your way next
few items on all fronts.

Speaker 6 (02:23:18):
We'll hit you next.

Speaker 3 (02:23:21):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (02:23:27):
Half way through the final hour of the program, means
in case you missed.

Speaker 6 (02:23:30):
It has arrived. That's what that music means.

Speaker 7 (02:23:32):
One thing to note since we talked about it earlier,
but correction is necessary. The Trey Hendrickson deal actually flip
the figures and he was able to say, I don't
want to play for sixteen million, but I'll play for
thirty He got a fourteen million dollar bump to this
year's salary. So I guess one way to look at it,
for how much money Trey Hendrickson will make on an

(02:23:53):
average annual value, it's obviously pretty easy to see that's
that's thirty million, or you could say it like this
way less than Daniel Hunter among others. He becomes the
sixth highest paid based on that aav behind such a
talent and beast that is Daniel Hunter.

Speaker 6 (02:24:15):
There's other players up there as well. What do you
think Mike is gonna get another team when he gets
traded there?

Speaker 7 (02:24:22):
Well, that's the thing, Like, I'm not saying he's gonna
play for the Cowboys for the entirety of this contract extension.

Speaker 6 (02:24:29):
I'm just saying he's gonna sign it with them.

Speaker 7 (02:24:31):
You just get the money when you can get the money,
and if they're gonna get if he can get it
from Dallas. He's gonna get it, and then he can
still say I don't really I'm not really feeling it anymore.
You can pay me this year and I'll play again
next year, but by then I'm gonna want out and
you can trade me. At that point in time, he'll
be one of He'll be no worse than third, but
he'll probably be first.

Speaker 5 (02:24:49):
Can Since some people might have missed the last segment,
can you please read the last thing that I put
on my x account?

Speaker 6 (02:24:55):
Yep, absolutely before we move on. You missed it. In
other words, yes, I'll read the last thing I have
up there.

Speaker 7 (02:25:04):
Tomorrow three pm Central, we were officially move running back
Joe Mixon from the active non football injury list to
the reserve non football injury list. Players placed on the
reserve non football injury list may begin to practice and
play after the club's fourth game of the regular season.
We will provide further updates at an appropriate time. Signed

(02:25:25):
the Houston Texans.

Speaker 6 (02:25:26):
Is that what you were looking now? Cole's gonna read
aloud from my account?

Speaker 7 (02:25:29):
Okay, something that pertains to something you might have missed
on today's edition of the eight Team.

Speaker 12 (02:25:33):
Yeah, basically, last segment, Ac and I found out that
Adam Wexler dated Jane Seymour when he was at college
at ut Not really, but that's the way I remember
the conversation.

Speaker 6 (02:25:43):
Yeah, have you missed it?

Speaker 7 (02:25:44):
The entire conversation we held last segment that was pure
sports talk that we found via the iHeartRadio app where
you should already be subscribing to the A team or
right there on our site soon to be posted for
sports Talk seven to ninety our show page the eighteen.
As long as it provided an opportunity to post a
gift of the dinner drunk senator's wife, then I'm.

Speaker 6 (02:26:06):
All for it.

Speaker 5 (02:26:06):
Well, I didn't want to like do the low hanging
fruit and just have the scene in question. Go watch
the movie for that where you watch Jeremy with his
motor boating technique.

Speaker 6 (02:26:16):
That Isley Fisher. Yes, very underrated. All right, you missed it?
What else do we have today? Top five all time
from Oh, come on, she's not that hot.

Speaker 3 (02:26:25):
Wode Yes she is.

Speaker 12 (02:26:26):
And you know what else is hot?

Speaker 6 (02:26:27):
The deal that the.

Speaker 12 (02:26:28):
Texans signed last year for Nico Collins. Because every single
day another wide receiver signs and it ends up being
that much more beneficial.

Speaker 6 (02:26:35):
You kind of mentioned it, but this is why we do.

Speaker 12 (02:26:37):
In case you missed it, we didn't really go into
full detail. The commanders in wide receiver Terry McLaurin have
recent agreement on Monday on a three year contract extension
worth up to ninety six million dollars that will end
his holdout. He will receive a thirty million dollars signing bonus.
According to ESPN, he has been holding out since the
starter training camp. Most people doubt the deal would get
done at the end.

Speaker 6 (02:26:57):
Of last season.

Speaker 12 (02:26:58):
Instead, now we deal gets done before the start of
this season. He's skipped OTAs he was activated for the
pup list on August sixteenth. One of the big reasons
why we talked about Jaden Dangos having the breakout year
was because of Terry McLaurin.

Speaker 6 (02:27:10):
His success last season.

Speaker 12 (02:27:12):
However, this contract is kicking in when he turns thirty
one years old, which will make him one of the
oldest receivers to receive an annual salary over thirty million dollars.
The only one that currently is at that age right
now is Miami Dolphins wide receiver Title Kilt.

Speaker 7 (02:27:27):
A couple notes on mclaurin's production, and again he was
a later arrival to the league just from an age standpoint.
So as Cole mentions his age, he's going into his
seventh season, it will be the first he will play
as a thirty year old already, because he entered the
league at age twenty four. Most of his rookie season
was played at age twenty four. He has had almost

(02:27:48):
the exact same number of yards for five consecutive seasons.

Speaker 6 (02:27:51):
Last year was his first with Jayden Dames.

Speaker 7 (02:27:54):
He's had between one thousand and two and eleven hundred
and ninety one yards all of those years. He's had
between seventy seven and eighty seven catches five consecutive years. Now,
tell me if this set of figures sounds different. Here's
touchdown totals the last five years, starting in twenty twenty four, five, five, four,
thirteen ooh.

Speaker 6 (02:28:13):
Last year with Jayden Daniels.

Speaker 7 (02:28:14):
As much as it's definitely true, he helped Jayden well,
Jayden helped make McLaurin a big time, game changing, point
scoring caliber player, and that's what elevated a status. So
thirty two million dollars of it as an average annual
value on a ninety six million dollar deal for McLaurin
slides him just ahead of Amon Ross Saint Brown and

(02:28:36):
just behind or tied with aj Brown sixth most. And
there are one, two, three, four, five, six, seven receivers
after him before you get to Nico Collins.

Speaker 5 (02:28:51):
Isn't the moral of the story, though, just to sign
your guy faster than anybody else signs there?

Speaker 7 (02:28:55):
Yes, signed general manager Houston Texans and executive vice president
Nick Casserio. Nico Collins not only signed early in the
contract timing of him, but signed early in the period
of the off season.

Speaker 6 (02:29:09):
And on and on and on the list goes.

Speaker 7 (02:29:11):
I hope, even though it will be more difficult, that
the same will be true next offseason with number seven.

Speaker 6 (02:29:17):
What else do we have?

Speaker 5 (02:29:18):
So the Texas Longhorns are getting prepared for their matchup
against the Ohio State buck Guys.

Speaker 6 (02:29:23):
No breaking news sounder, No no, no, no breaking news sounder.
I don't think so. I don't think I have to
do that.

Speaker 11 (02:29:28):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (02:29:29):
What I will say is that you and I have
agreed the hyper arch manning ZAC controlled. In fact, it's hilarious,
though it's so much so that I can't even enjoy
the game because I know what the pundits are going
to say afterwards. Well, naturally, it has become a subject
of conversation around the media in Austin and Steve Starkeishan
was asked, case in point, what do you expect from
number sixteen when he takes the field against the reigning

(02:29:51):
national champions.

Speaker 4 (02:29:52):
What do you hope to see?

Speaker 11 (02:29:53):
I just ruby him.

Speaker 16 (02:29:55):
Well, that's really our messaging to all of our players, though.
You know, you don't have to do anything you've never
done before. You don't have to. We're not asking any
superhuman efforts of you to do anything that is extraordinary.

Speaker 5 (02:30:08):
Just go be you.

Speaker 16 (02:30:09):
What what you've done is good enough to get us
to this point. Uh, and to get him to this
point in this juncture of his career.

Speaker 13 (02:30:16):
There you go.

Speaker 6 (02:30:17):
Just be you on Saturday, There you go.

Speaker 7 (02:30:19):
I I can appreciate what he's trying to say, but
he said it very, very poorly. Just do the things
that have gotten you here. He hasn't done anything.

Speaker 6 (02:30:29):
What did you do to get here? He's talking about
high school wex.

Speaker 7 (02:30:32):
I mean, you would never say that about a guy
making his first start out of high school. If he's
got the starting job as a freshman, as a red
shirt freshman, just a guy who hadn't played. And he's said,
you know, whatever year he is, he hasn't played. He
hasn't to get us here. He didn't do anything to
get them there.

Speaker 6 (02:30:50):
Right, who's the worst team in the SEC? Kentucky, Mississippi
not last year?

Speaker 7 (02:30:55):
Mississippi, say, was the worst team far away, and that's
who he started against and beat and look great.

Speaker 6 (02:31:00):
You want to play the schedule in front of you wex.

Speaker 7 (02:31:02):
So if he would have added, just do what you've
done to get here against Mississippi State, I wouldn't have
said a word, but he didn't.

Speaker 5 (02:31:09):
Again, I understand the sentiment, and he's right. He's saying,
don't try to do all work, don't go op, just
play football.

Speaker 6 (02:31:17):
You're awesome. We know you're awesome. And he's right. Who
did He's rap.

Speaker 5 (02:31:20):
On more today, Damian Pierce are arch manning Sark and
arch Over the course of the week. We don't have
to give predictions on this on a Monday. We'll get
to those on Friday.

Speaker 7 (02:31:32):
But I think a lot of people, at least from
my understanding, feel pretty good and defending national champions. You're
playing a brand new team the Longhorns aren't aren't the
same team from last year.

Speaker 6 (02:31:42):
It's not the same tame from last year.

Speaker 7 (02:31:44):
Silliness College football, reigning national championship talk. I barely believe
it in the NFL because their team's change far far
less college. Both of these teams have a new starting quarterback,
neither of whom have done anything defending national champs.

Speaker 6 (02:31:58):
True, but please.

Speaker 3 (02:32:04):
The A team on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (02:32:14):
It is the A team Sports Talk seven ninety Joe,
I don't know whether you should go to Wrigley or Fenway,
like you can't ask questions like that. He tweets into
the show and says, Wrigley Field or Fenway planning trip?

Speaker 6 (02:32:27):
Which is a better ballpark to visit?

Speaker 5 (02:32:29):
They're both old with uncomfortable seats, and it's gonna snow
in the first month of the season. There in the
last month of the season, which they never play in.
I'll answer the question, what.

Speaker 6 (02:32:40):
You would choose Wriggily over Finway? Yep? Now which city
would you rather visit? Way bigger?

Speaker 5 (02:32:48):
Obviously they're both good, very good, I think, and I again,
don't take this the wrong way Astros fans. This is not,
in fact Houston fans for despite the people there, these
sports fans, let's put it that way. I think Boston
is a nice little weekend trip if you're just wanting

(02:33:10):
to get away and go if you've never been there before,
get some good Italian food on the North End, go
to one of the ballparks. Finnway's fantastic, and and just
it's a nice small town where you can get around
and see most everything within short driving distance, because it's
not that big. Chicago's just all over the place. I

(02:33:31):
don't know whichever go whichever answer, I mean, I've been
to both of them.

Speaker 7 (02:33:37):
Not a real answer. So the Cubs sucks, not taking
anything out of that. It's personal bias. Earlier, what's that? Yes,
you really hate those personal bias.

Speaker 2 (02:33:50):
I get it.

Speaker 5 (02:33:50):
If you go to this, to the stadium of the
team you like, it's far more dangerous. Facts Yeah, facts, okay.
I know you want to give away something, hen well,
I want to give people time to properly operate here.

Speaker 6 (02:34:03):
Who was the actress? That's the answer.

Speaker 7 (02:34:06):
Not necessarily, oh man. So we do have tickets to
give away, and we want to make you enjoy them.
So make you enjoy them, Make you enjoy them. Well,
we got to make it happen before Thursday, and in
the case of the Cougar's tickets, because the game is Thursday.
So pair of tickets to go see the Coogs in
SFA Lone Star Stampede home opener that's this Thursday. It's
at TDECU Stadium. Should you not win tickets here, you
can get tickets at Uhcougars dot com slash tickets, or

(02:34:29):
you can call them up seven one three, go Koogs
to get your tickets. Make sure you go ahead and
come early, be loud, and we're red over at Tdecu.
We also have a pair of tickets to see Nellie, Jaw,
Rule and Eve. They are playing at the where the
party at Tour that's September fourth, over the Woodlands Pavilion.
Tickets for that also on sale now at ticketmaster dot com.
Earlier this hour, we did have a segment that was

(02:34:51):
a very typical segment of the show and that it
was off the rails. Completely got into a conversation about dating,
college and marriage, and it ended with the result being
we talked about a movie at length, to which Clinton
sent a post on the X platform. The movie we
talked about and the gift accompanying that tweet sent fifteen

(02:35:13):
minutes ago by AC five thirty two PM to be exact,
eighteen minutes ago is from a very very particular movie
which we never mentioned by name, that is, but quite
clearly is the movie we were talking about. Whether you
get that from the gift that was added to his
post on the X platform he's at Adam Clinton, or
you get it from the context of our show because
you love the A team and you were listening when

(02:35:35):
we talked about it. What movie were we talking about
that took the show completely off the rails, had nothing
actually to do with my dating life, although that was
weave together. If you know the answer to what that
movie is, and we talk about it all the time
on the show anyway seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven ninety and you have a chance to win a

(02:35:57):
pair of tickets to see the Koogs or a pair
of tickets to see the concert where the party at.
And I guess I should also say there was football
in this particular movie, Yeah, because that's what Marilyn does.

Speaker 6 (02:36:09):
Yeah, along with crab cakes.

Speaker 5 (02:36:10):
Along with crabcakes exactly, by the way, I forget, how
does Vince Vaughan get the outfit that he's wearing. That's
all that was available. Like whose clothes were those? I
can't remember how they got their ridiculous outfits. It was
all that was available. Okay, because remember they came right
from the wedding into the city. You don't have to

(02:36:30):
worry about anything. We've had anything for you. Oh it
sounds so exciting.

Speaker 6 (02:36:33):
No, no, no, we can't go.

Speaker 5 (02:36:34):
I would love to go, but I just I have
a prior commitment. There's no way we can make it.
Oh please, yeah, Isle of Fisher. That was both before
both the football game and the hunting trip. Hunting excursion,
I would find you, Jeremy, not just another notch on
a belt beltless. All right, what are you gonna do

(02:36:59):
with yourself tonight? With no Astros baseball?

Speaker 6 (02:37:01):
So around the house.

Speaker 7 (02:37:02):
Didn't get a chance to take care of over the
weekend because I spent so much of it in Austin.

Speaker 6 (02:37:06):
How hot was it up there?

Speaker 7 (02:37:08):
Well, I've said something to the people, the family that
I was with, and we were walking towards we were
walking to the Dragon to campus from West Campus, and
I know it was probably in the it wasn't even
in the nineties, probably nothing outrageous heat index.

Speaker 6 (02:37:22):
It was one oh five.

Speaker 7 (02:37:23):
I said to her, I don't think I remember walking
to class ever when it was this hot, well, not
even one day. I said, this isn't even anywhere near
as hot as it's going to be during many of
the days of the upcoming school year.

Speaker 5 (02:37:37):
I said this to my wife and I we used
to live there. I lived there from eighty eight to
eight or no eighty six to eighty nine, so I
started kindergarten there and I moved to Houston like the
end of my second grade year. But I do It's
weird because I'm very young, obviously, I'm like Carson's age
now back then, but I remember all of this so
vividly those three years in Austin, and I don't ever remember,

(02:38:00):
but I have since experienced every time I've gone back there,
no matter what time of year it was, and that
does include during the fall months. It's always hotter than
you know what. They're always I've been there in November
and just baked, like what's going on? And then of
course the cold front comes the day after I leave.

Speaker 6 (02:38:17):
That kind of thing.

Speaker 7 (02:38:18):
So you've been there twice in the last couple of weeks.
I've now been there twice in the last couple of weeks.
I will be up there for week threes football game
the next time.

Speaker 5 (02:38:26):
I'm trying to figure out which game that we want
to go to, which home game it'll be warm no
matter what.

Speaker 7 (02:38:35):
Now we don't have to make any predictions on this
particular game yet we will have our stone cold locks.
Returning to the A team. Oh, I can't wait four
thirty on Fridays throughout the football season.

Speaker 6 (02:38:46):
Do you have it ready? Well, it's Monday. I don't
need it ready yet.

Speaker 7 (02:38:49):
Now in the future, Mondays, I'll always have it ready
because the results will have been tabulated and calculated. And
you're a psycho, and well, how else are you gonna
keep up with the fact that you're gonna.

Speaker 6 (02:38:58):
Lose to both me and this time? I won?

Speaker 7 (02:39:01):
Last year he did win Lake Going good stuff, tough time.
Worst part about last year's picks was picking the Texans.

Speaker 6 (02:39:07):
I just could not. We all stopped up over five hundred.
We'll see how things work this year.

Speaker 7 (02:39:11):
And remember we gave you the news earlier as the
Texans somewhat surprisingly did a day in advance made the
announcement on Joe Mixon that he will not be on

Speaker 6 (02:40:08):
Who's going down to Sugarland? I think Bryce Matthews.

even though they don't play the same position.

Speaker 6 (02:40:18):
I don't think they need him here with both Urreus
and Dubon Hill.

Speaker 5 (02:40:22):
And they have the They've got the Rockies, Yankees Angels
on this home stand.

Speaker 6 (02:40:28):
Before that's over with Jake Myers is back.

Speaker 7 (02:40:30):
I think there's a reasonable chance that happens could ever
reab assignment, beginning as early as this coming weekend. We
