Speaker 1 (00:01):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adham, raised by Earl Nolan,
multed by the magnificent roller coaster ride.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
That is Houston Sports.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Chill lage down for the only homegrown afternoon team is
talking your teams. Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are the
eighteen a A.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
This went pretty deep to left, racing back on its
Carlton at the wall looking up see it later. Kristan
Walker a two ron homer, his seventeenth long ball of
the year and the former Oriole gives the Astros a
two nothing late in the first and.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
To get the lead.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
For the Astros, that's huge. They needed that big time.
And Kristan Walker with a huge they've been missing that
thump to one pitch, poked the left back on it.
Carlson still going back polla, kaye, there we go. Yider
Diaz a two run job is eighteenth.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Of the season.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Well, you mentioned young not as sharp tonight, doesn't have
as good a command and another example there. He hung
that slider and Diaz has always been pretty good at
punishing breaking balls in the zone. Anderson hitting three eighty
six with runners in the scoring position, and he lifts
this one out to right center, Sanchez to his right.
(01:37):
He's there waiting for it, makes the catch, and that
is the ball game. The Houston Astros, in their four
game losing streak, take the first game in Baltimore seven
to two.
Speaker 5 (01:50):
And just like that, the good times are rolling again. Okay,
maybe not, but it did feel that way as you watched. Honestly,
would this game got under way last night, if you blinked,
you were already missing out on a lot of the action.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Ten pitches to nothing.
Speaker 5 (02:08):
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I think that's why
it was so frustrating, because you knew that they were
capable of doing this the whole time, and it wasn't
because they were going up against stellar pitching.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
It shot out for six innings. Oh my gosh, stop it.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
The guy they're doing it against last night's the one
that almost had a perfect game against them.
Speaker 6 (02:27):
That's what I keep trying to tell everybody. And I'm
not a genius, and maybe I'm wrong, but it isn't
about the other teams. For the other pitch, it doesn't
even matter who it is, the same pitcher. He stinks
and they couldn't touch him. The same picture. He stinks
(02:47):
and they scored seven times before they recorded their seventh
out in the span of a week.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
And the Orioles didn't care about that loss last night
because they extended their catcher right after the game.
Speaker 6 (02:59):
Yeah, I had a nice play throwing down to second
with a ball four where the runner at second was
going to be safe under one hundred percent of the
circumstances that we're gonna play out, but then because it
was an air, Mauritio was able to run a third.
There is actually an interesting backstory to that, which we
may get to a little bit later here on the show.
But an opportunity to win too in a row, an
(03:20):
opportunity to wake up tomorrow up even further on the
Seattle Mariners. They did so this morning by increasing their
lead from a game and a half to two. The
Mariners were idle and the Astros obviously they won seven
to two, and the opportunity tonight with Lance mccullors junior
on the mound for the Astros, returning from his il stint,
the Mariners hosting the Athletics apparently, and we will see
(03:44):
if this in fact plays out. But I do like
the fact that you always have to wait every time
you get game notes or an update on social media
from a minor league team. Around Major League Baseball, they
want to tell you all the stuff that's going on,
especially when it's likely to increase fan interest in that
particular game.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Well, you're on.
Speaker 6 (04:03):
Alvarez is scheduled to play again tonight for the Corpus
Christy Hooks after he picked up hits number three, four
and five in his eight minor league rehabit bats in
last night's game. But it also adds the always popular
subject to change.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Well, I believe it's going to change.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
Oh, it is several hours before they normally post something
like that, but nonetheless, it has to make you think.
And I speculated on quite a bit last night during
the Astros tenth inning show. I know he hasn't had
the two days in a row of activity. Today will
be that second day in a row. Why not just
have that second day in a row against kde Povich
(04:44):
of the Orioles and then have him take.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
The day off Saturday.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
You know, I have him play on Sunday, and then
have him take the day off Monday with the rest
of the team, and then have him play on Tuesday.
I believe with twenty plus swings over a three day period,
plus all of the rehab work and you know, live
b and batting in the cage and hitting off of
coaches over the last six or seven weeks, they probably
have a pretty good idea of what he was going
to feel like today.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
So did he and hopefully he feels great. Wasting the
at bats.
Speaker 6 (05:12):
I wouldn't quite go that far, and Dana Brown did
address that when he was on with the Sean Salisbury
Show on Wednesday. He just didn't feel that way soon enough.
And we've already guaranteed it, guaranteed it. He will be
in the lineup for Joe Aspata on Tuesday at the
absolute latest. But the Astros have three games in between
now and then tonight, Tomorrow and Sunday, and then they'll
return home for Tuesday's game against the Rockies. Hopefully they're
(05:33):
in a really good position. A little bit of offense
goes a long way when your ace is on the mound,
and Jason Alexander is that an ace is somebody who
you win with every time you give them the ball,
and that's what's starting to happen now. Every time Jason
Alexander takes the ball for the Astros gave up the
first major league home run to Dylan Beaver's over the
first five innings and that was it got into a
(05:56):
bit of trouble in the sixth, then he walked off
the mound still having allowed just the one run, and
it could have stayed there if they were able to
turn two on the ground ball to Altuve that Steven
Okert was able to generate, but there was nobody covering first,
including Okert, so one more strikeout was needed, and obviously
one run scored when the bases were loaded, but that
was that and that was the end of the scoring.
(06:16):
The Astros bullpen looked very good, took care of their
business over the final six, seventh and eighth innings, with
Okurt coming in in the sixth, and there you go.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Ball game over.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
Astros have it their seventieth win of the season, pushing
past sixty nine. It was a great place to hang
out for almost a full week. Nice and now they
are booming past that. Should the Mariners get a win tonight,
they will assume the position of having sixty nine wins
on the season, still behind the Astros by at least
one game. No matter what happens tonight, off day for
(06:48):
the Texans, spending it in Detroit in preparation for the
final preseason game. With the work getting done yesterday and
the joint practice, expectations are they will not need to
put their starters the vast majority of their starters on
the field tomorrow against the Detroit Lions. But it is
an important game. It is an important game for roster evaluation.
(07:10):
You're gonna see guys doing everything they can to make
the Texans and ultimately what will happen to them. They'll
make somebody else's roster because there won't be a spot
for them here. They'll put some more on tape. They'll
get good word from inside the Texans facility. If your
coaches and general managers talk, they obviously like a lot
of players they let go. Ten to fifteen. Guys that
get let go are players they'd love to have. Even
(07:31):
beyond the sixteen they'll carry on a practice squad. But
they also want them to succeed and know there's maybe
a time down the road where they could get them back.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
If somebody else looks at him and.
Speaker 6 (07:39):
Says we had a spot for him, there's a spot
on our roster. And quite honestly, the Texans will release
their fifty three man roster early next week and it
will change probably four to six spots between then and
when they play their first game against the Rams.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
It'd be some interesting.
Speaker 6 (07:56):
Other items to talk about on the NFL side, still
in Texas, and there's only one other team in Texas,
so naturally they're making news.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
But we welcome you into the show.
Speaker 6 (08:05):
Today we have an early edition of the Astros on
Deck show in front of the Lance mccullors start. Brian
McTaggart will join us during that show, as he always
does on Friday nights here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Our Friday guest is Chandler Rome. He will join us
from Baltimore at four thirty this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
What do you think he's doing in Baltimore right now?
Prepping for work?
Speaker 5 (08:25):
Chandler in his hotel room, Chandler, it's three o'clock.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
Joe Spot is going to speak in two hours in Baltimore.
He's probably contemplating the last few things he needs to
make sure he has in his bag, his next stop
for coffee, snack, whatever, and make his way into the ballpark.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Has he consumed a crab cake yet?
Speaker 6 (08:49):
I'm gonna say no, all right, that's probably after you
can ask him at four thirty one.
Speaker 5 (08:53):
Oh, don't worry, I will. And another thing that we
will get to at some point today, and I know
this came up on match. One of you you listeners
out there created an a team Bingo card and it's spectacular.
It's real and it's spectacular. It's very accurate too, So
(09:13):
we'll go over that at one point. But yeah, I
just that was last night. Felt like the weight of
the world was lifted off of your collective chest if
you were the Astros. I don't know, like when we
had Christian Walker on, when we've had players on and
we happen to be interviewing them during a time where
it's kind of a downturn in the season for whatever reason,
(09:35):
and in the case of you know, Christian Walker, he
had had some difficulties individually this year obviously that we
know about. But I always wonder if being in the
clubhouse insulates you or makes you even more susceptible to
the perceived noise the actual noise of what is going
right or wrong at any given time in a one
(09:57):
hundred and sixty two game marathon.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
So I just I wonder if.
Speaker 6 (10:02):
They had the ups and downs of what we feel
on the air, yeah, what everybody else feels on social media,
they'd call it a season about forty five games in.
But how do you know way they could go through
a season like that? They don't take it the way
everybody else takes it, because there is tomorrow, and that
has to be viewed that way.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
You have to consider it.
Speaker 6 (10:20):
The longer you go in the season, the less applicable
it is because tomorrow is shorter and shorter and shorter,
and eventually there literally isn't one. Like when you're playing
Game two of a wild card series and if you
don't win, there is no tomorrow at the end of
the season, if you're not gonna make the postseason, if
you've already been eliminated for the postseason, and they just
haven't been in that situation the long term, Astros and
anybody who's come along in the last several years to
be a part of it, there's always a tomorrow for
(10:43):
this team because they're always in it, usually at the
top of the heap, which they currently are. This malaise
they went through offensively, which they very well could be
right back into. Who knows, they're facing another pitcher that
handled them in Bolton in Houston. In Povich, they're facing
another one who handled them Houston in Houston the next day,
and they see their ace in the final game of
this series. One game of offense doesn't mean they're out
(11:04):
of it.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Now.
Speaker 6 (11:06):
You might like to think one person might be out
of it when he had one, two, three, four, five
hits after not getting any hits in his last ten games.
They posted this last night, a simple message, why baseball
was awesome? Oh for twenty nine? Hey, Sue Sanchez, last
two weeks. Last night, five at bats, five hits. You
(11:26):
can't tell me baseball isn't awesome. That should never ever happen.
Just watch every day, Listen every day and you'll see
something new. Even the Fox crew couldn't believe it. You
could hear it last night in the sound of their voices.
Why do I like aj Perzinski so much? In fact,
I'll take it a step further.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
Why do I enjoy so many villains after their playing
career is over and they're in some sort of broadcast booth.
Speaker 6 (11:48):
Who are the other villains that have taken that path
that come to mind? Well, probably more on the basketball side.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
It Charles was a one time Rocket Rocket villain that
became a ally, obviously at the very end, but even
then he was catching strays. How could he be a
villain because he didn't close out on John Stockton exact.
So he was a villain for being on the Rockets. Well,
there were people that did not like the trade, okay,
(12:15):
so they vilify him because he was the principal piece
that came back just checking.
Speaker 6 (12:19):
He couldn't be a villain because he started a company
that the Rockets put out of business.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
There was nothing to be a villain from.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
Because he didn't do any kicking ink, They didn't do
anything to the stock was plumbing.
Speaker 6 (12:30):
They played basketball in the playoffs against him. They added drama,
they helped degenerate a nickname, but they sure as heck
didn't send him to the sidelines. That was the one
sent to the sideline.
Speaker 5 (12:39):
And I'll tell you what, they definitely knew who the
hell Chucky Brown was by the time that series was over.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
All good stuff, And yes, Aj Pierzinski playing career created
a lot of Animalsmon.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Green's the other one that will will become this guy
once he's done playing, because he's look, you can hate
him as much as I do, and I do, but
he's great on TNT and I don't know if that'll
be an ESPN now or what, but I think he's
been fantastic on that show.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
It could be a path for him because he's been
there so much. He obviously has branched out tremendously with
his podcast in the time that he's been on the
Worldwide Leader. He's also had more time in the calendar
year to do that because their seasons have ended much
earlier than they used to because they're not a good basketball.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Team anymore, even though I'm fully aware.
Speaker 6 (13:21):
Just a couple of months ago that not very good
basketball team anymore advanced and this soon to be unbelievably
good basketball team went home.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
We just get started here. It is Friday. I'm sure
you're aware of that. We're excited.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
I hope you're excited to go with us on this
road through the Friday edition of the eighteen.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
It is the eight team Sports Talks seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
WEX.
Speaker 5 (14:03):
I got a question for you here in the second segment,
and it does not involve Bill Cosby. It's a name
and I'm gonna put several question marks on the end
of it, and that's gonna be the question, Craig Kimberl,
that's it, that's the question.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (14:21):
So the last couple of weeks, after the Chicago Cubs
said it was time to DFA, Ryan Presley was all
the rage to say, why don't the Astros make a
phone call, Why don't we see if that's somebody that
could help this bullpen, which clearly needed some help. And
is there any issue with maybe how the relationship between
Dana Brown and Ryan Presley was, which always seemed a
bit strained, But I'm sure baseball would prevail over anything else.
(14:43):
Presley wants to work, the Astros want to win, Dana
wants to make it happen. I doubt that was much
of an issue, if it even was a consideration. But
why was Ryan Presley DFA A little lack of success
at different times, especially recently prior to his dismissal from
the Chicago Cubs, And we talked about some of his peripherals,
some of the numbers, hard hit rate, you know, batting
(15:03):
average again, slugging aloud, all sorts of things, exit velo
over the last several years. It's a very very very
clear trend. The pitcher he once was doesn't. He's not
him anymore. And not only that, he's gotten to the
point where he's so far beyond that it's it's troublesome
to find the best spots for him. Cubs are headed
to the playoffs. Cubs were a first place team or
close to it at the time, and they felt this
(15:25):
was the move they needed to make. Well, Craig Kimberl's
not that different from that, except nobody wanted him to
even throw a major league pitch this year, except for
a team that was just like what the Astros did
this week with Taylor Freaking Scott Taylor Scott DFAD.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Nobody wanted him.
Speaker 6 (15:44):
Astros had him on a minor league deal, spent a
little over a month with the Space Cowboys, bullpens, and
dire Straits. Put him on the forty man, bring him up,
know that you're gonna use him, and know that you're
gonna send him packing the very next day. That's what
happened to Craig Kimberl this year. For the only inning
he has as a major leaguer this year with the Braves,
they brought him back, they activated him they put him
(16:05):
out there, and then they sent him packing. Rangers picked
him up after that, and he's been in their minor
league system ever since, throwing at Triple A. I don't
think this is a particularly smart play. I could work.
Definitely not in favor of it. My thought on this
has been the same from the beginning of this year
and for almost every year, and it's what do you
(16:25):
have a minor league system for. I don't care how
bad it is, I don't care how poorly it's thought
of outside the organization. If Logan van wy and aj
Bluebaugh and Luis Contreras and Nick Hernandez and the countless
people who throw baseballs for the Space Cowboys are a
worse option than Craig Kimberrel, I'm shocked. Yeah, well, considered
(16:50):
worse options than a guy who nobody wants pitching for
them at the major league level for almost the entire season.
Speaker 5 (16:56):
And you haven't even gotten to the most important part
of your argument and my argument, and everybody who has
a sound baseball minds argument against this move.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
You've killed him. You the team signing him.
Speaker 6 (17:09):
I don't even agree with that. Why when did you
kill him back when he.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Was supposedly still good. That's my point, doesn't even matter,
totally irrelevant. Well, it's no, but it real that's what.
That's the point that it reinforces though you were killing
him back when he was good. Way to throw pitches from. Okay,
I will give you that, because he also walks a
ton of batters if you guys hadn't been paid.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Well, the Astros don't have enough of those guys on
their staff, so clearly they need another one.
Speaker 6 (17:32):
Like the best part of what their bullpen still is.
They don't walk guys. SUSA doesn't walk guys. King doesn't
normally walk guys walked the eye last night. Steven Oker
doesn't walk guys. A Braid walks a few more than
you'd like, usually as soon as he gets into the game.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Tonight's starter walks. Guy doesn't walk.
Speaker 6 (17:51):
And Kimberl has had trouble finding the strike zone the
last couple of years of his career, and it's there's
a reason why he's been through multiple organizations. The point
I'd make is I'd rather see young Logan van Wise Arm.
I'd rather see young aj Bluebaws Arm at the major
league level rather than hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and
hundreds of appearances thirty seven year old Craig Kimberl's arm.
(18:14):
When you have all the data you need, he's not
capable of consistently getting major league hitters out. I'm a
little surprised, and I can't believe they find themselves this desperate.
And I'm saying this without him having pitched, things could
go a lot better than I'm forecasting, quite clearly. But yeah,
when I saw the news yesterday and we talked about
it a little on Post Game show last night, we'll
(18:35):
talk more about it today because both with Lance mccullors
and Kimberl, all the roster has to be changed in
order from that to happen from a pitching standpoint, because
they gotta divine spots for them, which means two other
arms are gonna have to be taken off the roster
in some form or fashion.
Speaker 5 (18:52):
Yeah, I just I don't get it like you, I
don't understand what the thinking is. And even okay, so
even if you want to go get a guy who's
you know, at the tail end of his career or
in that in that vein basically someone who's from the
outside of the organization, a veteran presence you want to
bring in whatever. Aren't there other names that are comparable
(19:14):
to Craig Kimberl that are better.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
I don't know who they are, but.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
The last three or four weeks there have been a
countless pitchers that have been DFA. Presley would be one,
Carlos Carrasco would be another. There's quite a few, and
they're all sea.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
I feel like, yeah, Presley, I would say the same
thing about the signing is I'm saying about Cam Kimbrel.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
I would too, you know.
Speaker 5 (19:35):
That's that's why I'm like, this is this is no
different than going and getting a guy who you already
knew at least.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Yeah. I hope it works.
Speaker 6 (19:41):
I hope they're not relying on him for much. I
doubt very seriously that they are. He's just someone else
they hope can help him get a few outs. There's
probably some matchups they think might work best for him,
the way he throws, the arm angle that he uses.
But it's just there's there's enough evidence, and I know
it was just you know, some might look at his
twenty two and twenty twenty three seasons with two different
(20:03):
teams and say, no, look, how effective. He was, and look,
he was getting guys out, he was counted on and
he was used a lot.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
And it is true. There's there's some good numbers there,
there's some good results there. Twenty twenty four, Baltimore thought
that signed him in the offseason gave him twelve million dollars.
He was terrible, and he was let go before the
end of the year.
Speaker 6 (20:21):
And this year, as I pointed out, it's been one
organization after the next, and we're talking about a guy
who has more career saves than Billy Wagner.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Yeah, that's isn't that crazy?
Speaker 5 (20:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (20:34):
It is. Is he going in the Hall of Fame?
Speaker 6 (20:36):
I really don't think so. And it's it would be
interesting to you know, ken Lee Jansen is the active
leader in saves, Craig kimberl Now is right there behind him,
and Billy Wagner just got in. There are things that
Billy Wagner had on his side that pretty much every
other reliever doesn't because he's first all time, because he's
the best that's ever done it. So it's not just
about the save total for Billy Wagner, which isn't even
(20:58):
as strong as theirs. Soll Craig Kimball's first four years
as a major leaguer, he had almost two hundred saves,
almost forty percent of his career total at age twenty six,
and then pitched for another twelve years and basically doubled
It's it's been a long time since he's been the
guy closing games for anybody, But like I said, the
(21:19):
last couple of years, he has procured a bunch of
saves for Baltimore and Philadelphia and the Dodgers and the
White Sox and the Cubs all in a span of
four years, plus the Braves this year for an inning.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
I thought this was gonna be one of those times
where you sound like you're done and then you find
like five more teams that he played for too.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
Well, the Astros.
Speaker 6 (21:37):
When he throws his first pitch will be team number
nine that he's thrown a major league pitch for, and
it will be team number seven in the last four years.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Admit it.
Speaker 5 (21:47):
The first time he gets into a relief situation for
the Astros, even if it isn't high leverage, you're gonna
be a little bit nervous.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
I will be. There would be.
Speaker 6 (21:57):
If you're not nervous, then maybe you have already gone
to Betty bye.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
All right, we are not nervous about what's coming up next.
In fact, quite the opposite. We love this segment. Every
day around this time we do the best of X.
We cruise the main streets of social media to find
some of the best and worst sometimes that it has
to offer. And we will do that straight ahead.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
Did you all see this?
Speaker 7 (22:25):
We're putting out between five and fifteen posts a day.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Four hundred people were arrested for things of day said
on social media. History repeats itself type bang, you'll succeed.
Speaker 7 (22:37):
Never doubt that you're the one too, perfer no one.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
We'll believe you're the best. Be nothing's gonna ever top
you know you're the best of X posting ever seen.
Mole day, You're the best of it. Breaking the entire Internet.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
Yep, the Internet. It's never broken, Breaking the entire Internet.
It is halfway through.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Our number one. It is the A team. It is
time for the best of X.
Speaker 6 (23:08):
Anything we might have found on social media or you
guys have helped us find on social media. Always accepting
submissions at Adam Jay Wexler at mister Cole Thompson at
Adam Clinton or you can just you know, find us elsewhere.
But that's the easiest way to find us. Right there
on the X platform. We found a few things. My
question for you is basketball or football.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
I will go with basketball.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
I was hoping for more of what I like in
the Best of X, which is the comments and the replies,
and there are far fewer than I thought. But I
think this will play quite well anyway. Considering my co
host NBA two K, we actually have talked about it
a little bit here this offseason. In that Steph Curry
drew a ninety nine rating for three point shooting. Oh,
(23:55):
here we go, and next in line was Kevin Durant
way down at ninety one.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
She's Kevin Durant.
Speaker 6 (24:00):
Did you know that he outshot him last year and
for the combined last couple of years, which is a
probably be a pretty good indicator for these two older
players in the NBA and what they might do in
their future. So yeah, we have reference to NBA two K.
Now for the lifespan of NBA two K, which goes
back pretty far. How about the best average NBA two
(24:22):
K ratings, Top ten players, best average rating over the
course of NBA two k's existence in the history of it,
in the history of it, which means Dwayne Wade, Jordan, Ai,
Kobe Shack, They're all in the top ten.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Number one. Of course MJ is Lebron ninety five point six.
All that just shows you how that game is. No,
it does not show you that at all. Does let
me finish?
Speaker 6 (24:51):
Fine, Michael Jordan only trails Lebron, Kobe, Kevin Luca, Ai Shack,
Anthony Davis. But here's why I don't. I actually want
to stop the segment right now and take a picture
of ac or maybe even a video like nobody could
have the energy and life sucked out of him any
harder than he just did when I said.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
What I because you won't even wait to take you sir.
The explanation is sound. It will bring you back to life.
The blood will start flowing again.
Speaker 6 (25:22):
The whiteness, overwhelming, ghostly atmosphere you're presenting in the studio
will disappear again, and you'll be You'll be back to life.
It's like you're gonna get a shot of coffee, a
shot of energy drink.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
You remember when Anchorman tell you why he's eight.
Speaker 5 (25:37):
You know, you remember an anchorman when he just casually says,
I don't believe you and lights a cigarette on the set.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
That's me right now. Who is he talking to? Uh?
Speaker 5 (25:46):
We are on He's talking to the floor director as
he think he's just told San Diego what it could
do to itself.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Go away, because it was in the prompter.
Speaker 6 (25:55):
The Wizards years are the ones that qualify for the
measure in it.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
It didn't work. With the point it didn't work.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
That was the part of his career that coincided with
NBA two K ratings.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
What was the first year of NBA two K two
thousand one.
Speaker 6 (26:10):
Tried to do as much research as I could it
would it would obviously be those years. Okay, if that
is accurate, then that would be the explanation Michael Jordan's
NBA two K raiding as a Washington Wizard. Just so
you know for those that don't he did finish his career.
Two things about Michael Jordan. I think the general republic
is unaware of he played during one of the two
(26:32):
Rockets NBA championship seasons. I think people who are unaware
that that happened and was in the playoffs. The Chicago
uniform for the Chicago Bulls during the season, the postseason
where the Rockets claimed a championship, and secondarily, his final
one hundred and forty two NBA games were played in
a Wizard's uniform or the Washington franchise that has been
(26:55):
so downtrodden. His career scoring average in thirteen years the
Bulls thirty one and a half. He's a fifty percent
shooter from the floor, a thirty three percent shooter, which
in that era was pretty.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Good from three point distance.
Speaker 6 (27:10):
His one hundred and forty two game career with the
Wizards just lop ten points per game off of his average.
So he's at twenty one and make him a forty
three percent shooter overall, and tell me he makes three
pointers with the accuracy of Russell Westbrook at twenty four percent,
and that's why his name actually allowed him to draw
(27:33):
such a good rating. But eight on that list, So
you want to run through the rest of them and
where you think they were, Keeping in mind I've now
given you some of the information. All the other players
essentially have the best parts of their career here.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
Well, one question is eight.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
Yeah, Lebron is one, and there is if you were
listening closely, already know one current Rocket on.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
The list, Kevin durant is. I'm gonna say four.
Speaker 6 (28:01):
He's three behind only Lebron and one of the other
three Lakers that's on the list besides Lebron, it's gotta
be Kobe. Kobe's two. So Lebron Kobe KD, followed by
another Laker, Shack, A current Laker, Luca.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Luca is four.
Speaker 5 (28:22):
This this list is absolute trash.
Speaker 6 (28:26):
When you hear who else is on it, you won't
think so I already do.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
It's a he's ahead of Ai. Totally fair and fine. Harden.
Speaker 6 (28:35):
Harden's not on the There are the only other active
players on the list after Luca, KD and Lebron play
for the Mavericks and Warriors.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
So Steph is tenth.
Speaker 6 (28:48):
That's even see and but their numbers are so close.
Like the person who's ten but no said Warriors. That's Curry. Oh,
he's the only Warrior.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Yes, the other one plays for the Mavericks and he
only has one eyebrow.
Speaker 5 (29:04):
I mean this makes me Honestly, I'm not even kidding
when I say this. I never want to play this game.
Speaker 6 (29:09):
Every once in a while, the best of X does
its job and falls in line with actually the worst
of X. But really, are you're very unhappy because the
most maybe even your weekend?
Speaker 5 (29:21):
No, No, for sure, my Friday sucks right now because
of you. The ten highest average NBA two K ratings.
And again, do they go My question about this before
I go any further, is to ask you, do they
go out of their way to explain the parameters for
how they came up with that list in.
Speaker 6 (29:39):
The numbers from each of the seasons of NBA two
K and average to them and here you go.
Speaker 5 (29:43):
So, but they go out of their way to say
this is only during the time that two K has existed.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Yeah, sure, how else could they do? That's such an
average thing to do? By the way, you know that right?
Speaker 6 (29:55):
Well, if we I don't agree, if we're our game
that's been around, and we're going to tell you who
have the highest average from that time period?
Speaker 2 (30:01):
What other way? There is no other way to do.
Speaker 5 (30:02):
It, because if they do it that way instead of
all time NBA, then they can fudge it to where
this is the only are they're yes, they are. They're
eliminating a whole freaking time of existence in in like
the world.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
They're not eliminating it.
Speaker 6 (30:19):
They're telling you, here's our game, and as during the
time period of the game, here are the players that
have been the best.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
They're not eliminating. They're just saying this it's not relevant
to them, and in so doing, then they can put
Lebron at the top. That's what they're doing here. That's
why they did it. What what other game has said?
We're only doing it for the time this game has existed. No,
every other basketball for no, not true.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
I've ever seen like Joe Montana or fran Tarkinson.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
Or any of those guys. I don't think Gas do this,
but they don't have any Madden radios. Every NBA game
ever has always said, all right, it's all time, not
just this little sliver of time like this game did.
So we can put Lebron number one. That's why they
did it. You won't convince me otherwise.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
I'm a pretty dumb person. Did not necessarily expect it
to go that way. I do have one more thing
for you. Can you give the people a little background
on Steve Smith Senior, who makes another appearance on the show.
What what's been going on in his life over the
last couple of months we talked about it. It obviously
made major news. I know I should know this, but
(31:25):
I had a little lawsuit. He has a little you know,
the issue with the Ravens and the band member and
oh I.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
Remember now I forgot all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
Okay, So I'll take you to the Panthers game last
night's in the booth Any shrof play by play. They're
on camera for this little on camera read promoting one
of their sponsors, and Steve Smith is the analyst, one
of the two analysts there.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
And this is how it went.
Speaker 8 (31:49):
Scam the QR code on your screen to claim a
free chicken sandwich that I already did it. I don't
forget drive group after the game of your gift card
or free sandwich from tonight's brought cast. It's a win
win for fans and Flavor Steep. It's our fans run
into you guys. Yes, we've been going through the drive
through after. You're gonna treat the fans to a chicken
(32:12):
sandwich if they bought.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
You No Brothers one chicken sounds may y'all know my situation.
I can't afford to be helping everybody venue here's one thing.
We went off camera.
Speaker 6 (32:27):
I told the joke about himself and tried to just
move along.
Speaker 5 (32:31):
He's not the Cubs radio booth offering free food for everybody.
He can only afford his chicken sandwich for free. You
guys know what I'm going through. He's been sued under
in this case, the home wrecker law for.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
An alleged affair. Home wrecker law, I said, you know,
you know what I'm going through. What state is he
being sued in? I believe it's the Carolina we need
to look at.
Speaker 5 (32:53):
We need to look up the home wrecker law there
and see what it says North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Okay, yeah, we definitely need to check into that. Dre
in the break.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
As a matter of fact, he needs to watch his
money and make sure he can afford the things he
can afford.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
What's the Wexler research team of two right now? Are
they awake? Of course they're awake.
Speaker 5 (33:09):
All right, We're gonna have to look into that during
the break when we come back. Hey, free agency astros ties,
let's talk about that when we return.
Speaker 1 (33:26):
The age on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (33:36):
As per request to open the final segment of this
first hour, we will still get to what you teased.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
What's the latest?
Speaker 6 (33:46):
Where might we see former Houston astro Kyle Tucker hitting
baseball's next year? Where might we see current Houston astro
from ber Valdez throwing baseball's next year? And which of
the group of free agents might the ass have some
interest in this upcoming offseason? But first ask per your request,
I'll go to a local Carolina law firm for their definition,
(34:10):
and then I'll let AI tell us what it's all about.
The home wrecker law in North Carolina, as some would say,
the so called home wrecker law. If homewrecker is written
in the contest of an article with this you know
this case, and they always tried so called and they
put it in quotes home wrecker law that allows a
spouse to sue the illicit lover of his or her
(34:32):
spouse for damages. Okay, I see how the Steve Smith
Senior situation would apply. AI describes it this way, though
it's officially known as the torte of alienation of affection,
which allows a spouse to sue a third party for
interfering with and destroying the love and affection within their marriage.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
To win such a lawsuit.
Speaker 6 (34:57):
The planets must prove that genuine love and affection existed
before the interference, that the third party's wrongful and malicious
actions caused the loss of that affection, and that the
plane of suffered damages as a result.
Speaker 5 (35:12):
Okay, that, especially as written, is the worst most bogus
law I've ever seen in my life and should be
one hundred percent of the time easy to disprove.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
If you're a lawyer worth their salt.
Speaker 5 (35:27):
You want to know why, Read the part again about
the alienation by the third party.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
It's known as the tort of alienation of affection. Yeah,
but what did the third party do?
Speaker 6 (35:39):
They they're wrongful and malicious actions caused the loss of
that affection.
Speaker 5 (35:43):
And those were wrongful and malicious actions would presumably be
something of a physical nature. Yes, well, I mean unless
they just held them at gunpoint. Isn't that a consensual
dual person act of some kind.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
Yes, it would normally be so. Therefore, as it would
have been technically.
Speaker 5 (36:04):
Lieutenant Weinberg, Therefore, who's the third party? You you, Lieutenant Weinberg.
I mean, unless the other person was held against their will.
It took two to tango here, that's not the third
party just coming in and crashing the party uninvited.
Speaker 6 (36:21):
As of twenty nineteen, we had fifty states. We still do,
but we might buy Canada. I believes of twenty nineteen
there were only six states that had a.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Version of the home wreckerd law. North Carolina is one
of them.
Speaker 6 (36:37):
I know home wrecker well, his homes quote unquote been
wrecked twice previously.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
But he wasn't the third party in this case. And
again I'm taking liberties with home records. Every divorce doesn't
necessarily mean I do.
Speaker 5 (36:50):
I do admire the fact that that's the jargon they used.
I mean, well, that's the what is a home wrecker?
Someone who there the claim is they're marriage is fine
and you therect it ruined it. Yeah, that's the term
is referencing, and that's in the in the terminology or
the definition there. It was fine until you came along.
(37:13):
Otherwise it would still be fine, is what. There's so
many assumptions here, just so.
Speaker 6 (37:18):
Knowing that somebody was negatively affecting your marriage can be
immeasurably painful.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
Yeah, it can be, as you potentially pursue legal action. Yeah,
of the monetary variety, especially.
Speaker 6 (37:30):
The third party may try to argue that they did
not pursue your ex spouse until you were already separated.
They may even try to assert that their actions were
due to the loneliness the ex spouse felt after the separation.
Speaker 5 (37:42):
You know, that's my favorite is when two people get
together and they're like, well, we were already separated from
the other person.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
So it's fine. We were on a break.
Speaker 5 (37:49):
Yeah, that's essentially what they're saying. It should be called
the we were on a break law. Since we're just
naming things all rusk, I.
Speaker 6 (37:56):
Want to get more of the terms that everyone hates
and loves into the conversation. This law allows a jilted
spouse to bring legal action against the third party. You
may have caused strife in their marriage and led to
the separation or divorce. They could be These cases can
be very difficult to prove. Evidence might be hard to come.
It's all subjective, all of it.
Speaker 5 (38:17):
The whole thing is circumstantial, subjective, all the words, all
the buzzwords.
Speaker 6 (38:20):
That's why it appears that forty four or eighty eight
percent of the Great United States have said I don't
think we're going to have this law.
Speaker 5 (38:29):
But North Carolina is like, yeah, we're down, do it. Go,
Let's watch this, Let's watch the fireworks. What a stupid state,
you know what, just for that, I'm never going there.
I've never been, and now I won't.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
They're out.
Speaker 5 (38:41):
Now I'll go to South Carolina just despite them, because
you know what, they don't have home wreckerd laws there.
Speaker 6 (38:45):
I don't know that the home wrecker law is tied
to tourism issues they have in North Carolina.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
How do you know, don't know.
Speaker 5 (38:52):
A bunch of third parties coming into town, w reckon
some marriages, wreckon some homes, that's according to that law.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
That's what's going to happen.
Speaker 5 (38:58):
Oh, you're a visitor third party, there's strife on the
way because it's vacation time.
Speaker 6 (39:04):
Went through, the trade deadline, went through, the Kyle Tucker trade,
we obviously have talked at length about fromber Valdez. All
of this relates to homes for twenty twenty six Major
League ballplayers thinking about that grand scape of things, grand
big landscape of things, players that were attached to the
Astros who they were actually intensely trying to go get
(39:25):
and even knowing that there would be free agents, even
other players that have left the Astros but could become
a free agents again this offseason. Of the ten players
who will most drive the free agent market that's not
a current astro like fromber, is there one that stands
out that might be a potential fit for the Houston Astros.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
I've got one in mind, and I'll tell you who
I think that is when we come back, because it
lends itself to the topic that I wanted to get
to in the next segment as well, because that also
includes a pitcher.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Before he says who it is.
Speaker 6 (40:03):
Next segment, I'll give you that list of players and
there are ten of them, and one of them that
is not an astro is described. Again, this is not
that they've had conversation or it's just a potential fit,
just a guess. And I'll also note that they note
among the other notable free agents to make the list,
Ryan Presley.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
Wait what notable? What Craig heimbro wasn't available?
Speaker 6 (40:27):
Ryan currently a free agent for any team that wants
him notable? That's kind of odd. I will also be
a half hour away from eighteen Bingo thanks to a
fantastic listener to the eight Team.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
The a team on Sports Talk seven ninety two lifelong
Houston sports guys named at him Talking your Team, Adam
Clinton and Adam Whitefler are the eighteen.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
Day We are back.
Speaker 6 (41:04):
Sporks Talk seven ninety the eighteen It is Friday and
our number two of the program. Wex Ac and Cole
here with you. We'll get you ready for Astros Baseball
with the Astros on deck show and as expected, a
host of roster moves have now been made for the
Astros in preparation for tonight's game.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
You want like one of them for sure.
Speaker 6 (41:22):
Bennett's SUSA fifteen day il with left elbow inflammation retroactive
to a couple of days ago. Knew they had to
clear roster spots for two pitchers. That's how they cleared
one of them. The other one was cleared with Logan
van Y being optioned back to Triple A. The two
spots opened up will be taken by Lance McCullers Junior.
(41:44):
He will be activated off the fifteen day il as
was expected. He'll make tonight's start. And number forty six
for your Houston Astros is Craig Kimberl. He's reported to
the club he's been signed to a major league contract.
He is on the Astros roster and available to Joe
Aspada should he need him tonight. Additionally, and as we
(42:08):
surmised when the last injury update was offered from the
Astros on Brandon Walter, his season is over. He's been
transferred to the sixty day IL. He will not be
pitching for the Astros again this season. Taylor Scott accepted
his outright assignment to Triple A. So Jordan Weems, who
threw thirty seven pitches in his one outing, only seventeen
(42:31):
of which were strikes, was DFA. He ultimately was unclaimed
and accepted his assignment to Triple A Sugarland. Taylor Scott,
who threw forty two pitches, two of which were hit
over the fence in his one appearance with the Astros
before he was DFAD and what the similar path, accepting
his outright assignment to Triple A sugar Land. So another
(42:52):
team for Craig Kimberrel is now a fact. He's on
the roster now and Lance mccullors, Junior Spencer, Areghetty, and
Christian Javier will be the astros three starting pitchers to
close out this series. Javier Tomorrow Spencer Araghetty on Sunday.
As was the case when the offseason began, you figured
you would get some arms back and hope they would
(43:14):
pitch well and again. Two weeks into the season, one
of those arms became Spencer A. Ghetty because it was
hurt after his second start. Each of those three pitchers,
in what currently, at least through Sunday, is a six
man rotation, will make the next three starts, as the
Astros at least on a different path. Finally, they extended
their lead in the division with their win last night
(43:35):
by a half game with the Mariners IDOL. There is
a two game gap in between these two teams, the Athletics,
who have been playing pretty good baseball, certainly good offensive
baseball the opponent in Seattle for the Mariners tonight, Tomorrow
and Sunday, while the Astros continue their final three games
of their season. Series with the Orioles did not go
well in Houston. Started tremendously well with the game last night,
(43:58):
scoring in the first multiple runs, scoring in the second,
multiple runs, scoring in the third multiple runs, and had
seven runs on the board before Brandon Young had even
recorded six outs. They did not score after that. They
also weren't threatened after that, winning seven to two.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
I was in a.
Speaker 5 (44:20):
Place this morning where a lot of people are fans
of the show, listen to us, they know us our
boss's office.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
No, no, no, no.
Speaker 5 (44:28):
This was a place that I frequent on a semi
regular basis if I need to get something done, yeah, here,
so then they know us maintenance variety, let's put it
that way. And it was like, I mean, like the
birds were chirping, that kind of thing. They were all
because I had actually been there a few times this week.
(44:50):
I've had a project going on there, and they were
just everybody every day, you know, because the losses kept
mounting up and the way they were losing and the
lack of scoring and all that, and man, today all
of them just could not be happier. Just about it
felt like it basically felt like ten wins last night.
If you were if you were a lot of Astros
(45:12):
fans that were going through it, so to speak.
Speaker 6 (45:15):
They matter, every one of them. Whether it's to snap
a four game losing streak, whether it's a one nothing victory,
whether it's a game where there was a bit of
an offensive explosion scoring seven runs for any team, Nobody
averages seven runs a game. In the majors, scoring seven
runs is a pretty nice feat, and you win a massive,
massive majority of the games when you score seven times. Now,
(45:37):
the key is did we do something differently? And I
don't really truly think they did. I think this is
just a day where they know they're not changing plans
on an every couple of game basis. They're not looking
at their hitting coaches for a week and saying I
can't believe you're still here, and then this morning when
they get to the ballpark saying.
Speaker 2 (45:53):
Man, I am so glad you're here. You guys are geniuses.
Speaker 6 (45:56):
It doesn't work that way in baseball, and a lot
of times when hitting coaches are relieved of their duties
as teams like to say and then the team starts hitting, well,
that's not why.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
It's more of a wake up call. It's more of
a well we had to do.
Speaker 6 (46:09):
Something, and we weren't gonna fire the manager, and you
can't fire the players. The GM's not getting fired, and
ultimately that ends up being a fall guy, which at
some point in time for a group of hitting coaches.
Because the Astros have Alex Sin, Tron and Snicker concurrently,
two hitting coaches. I'm sure at some point they'll be elsewhere,
they won't be here. But you continue to see a
(46:30):
team that they look like they did last night, and
you're like, yeah, why is this so hard? If Jordan
Alvarez isn't in the lineup and they could score seven runs,
Jordon Alvarez has been out of the lineup for months
and they can maintain their spot in first place. It
doesn't seem like this could ever any team. I mean,
if you're not the Rockies or the White Sox or
some of the recent Marlins teams. There shouldn't be a
(46:51):
stretch of baseball games, even if you're facing ace ace ace,
that you go three consecutive games without scoring runs. There's
too much good that comes out of being a major
league hitter. And they have a major league lineup. This
isn't the month ago. Astros the lineup for the most
part that they have out there. It's that they're in
a slump. It's that a guy who had five hits
(47:11):
last night was in a massive slump. It said Jacob
Melton hasn't hit well at all since he has been
back with the Astros, or when he was first with
the Astros, and both of them were out there. We'll
see what Jospota has in store for the lineup tonight
and what cad Povic can do with it. While Lance
peccullors tries to hold the Orioles down for a second
consecutive game, Jason Alexander and the bullpen held them to
(47:34):
two runs last night.
Speaker 5 (47:35):
How are you how's your confidence level? How are you
feeling about Lance mccullors junior.
Speaker 6 (47:40):
I think the Astros need another offensive night like they
had last night if they expect to win.
Speaker 5 (47:44):
But if you're saying that, don't you feel like that's
the case now every single time out with him, and
that wouldn't have been the case with him before all
of his injury issues.
Speaker 6 (47:54):
Not quite, because I'm hopeful that he and the team
spent a little more time during this time away from
major league pitching going through what is going wrong? Not
accepting well he's rusty, Well what did we expect? Well
it's not going to be perfect, but rather said, here's
how this pitch is not working for you, or here's
how this pitch is working for you, or we need
(48:15):
to tweak this, or you need to throw this more often,
or you need to look at this or we need
to just having a better plan for what they now
have is all their twenty twenty five Lance mccullor's pitch
data and trying to go about it a little bit
differently and maybe accepting, look, maybe you're going to give
up more hard contact, but you're not going to be
pitching in the fourth and fifth inning of any of
your games if every pitch you throw is out of
(48:38):
the zone or is on the edges, which maybe that
day you're not getting. Maybe you run into an umpire
who has a very tiny home plate, which just happens
to be a factor. It shouldn't be, but we know
that it is. And so there's a little bit of
hope that a healthy arm and his arms should be fine,
can still be better than what he was the first
two go rounds. Because remember this is the third time
(48:59):
he will have back off the injured list just.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
This year to pitch for the Astros.
Speaker 6 (49:04):
The foot injury obviously the arm injury were the first
two and now the blister. So for a third time
he goes back out there and what I said, they
need to score like they did last night. I'm not
saying he's gonna give up six runs, but I would
be surprised if it was an Alexander like outing.
Speaker 5 (49:18):
It's a lot of start, start and stop lately for
Lance mccullor Junior, and it's hard to get into a rhythm.
Obviously with that being the case, but I don't know
that it would matter if he didn't go on the shelf.
It was like you're saying, it's it's what he's trying
to do when he is in there. That's been far
more of an issue because this is a guy that's
(49:39):
gotten guys out in the past with his stuff, not
just oh, you know he there was a method to
his madness. There was a game plan, there was a precision,
whatever you want to call it. There was a time
where you not only were you very confident if he
was pitching, but he was the ace of the staff
when you went to a world series. People forget that
(50:01):
still because it's been so long now, but in twenty
twenty one, Justin Verlander wasn't walking through that door and
you didn't.
Speaker 6 (50:09):
At Lance doesn't have a brother who's extremely active and
vocal on social media. I'm sure he could come up
with some numbers that make him look good.
Speaker 2 (50:16):
Wow. Shots fired at our former guest.
Speaker 6 (50:19):
He's going like he's taken a couple of steps out
on this one.
Speaker 5 (50:23):
Just he can't stop himself. Well, family, you know blood
is thicker than twitter.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
Yes, it definitely is thicker than twitter. I like that.
Speaker 6 (50:31):
I just last time out, for Lance's rehab appearance with
the Space Cowboys one week ago, he walked two hitters
over five innings and gave up four hits six be
a hit a batter, So seven base runners and seven innings.
That's acceptable pitching. That's the kind of pitching they need
from him. Pitch count's not getting out of control, he's
(50:53):
not forcing himself into You gotta pitch from the stretch.
You gotta pitch in traffic, Gotta have a fine line here.
You gotta hope to get a guy to hit into
a double play to prevent a run from scoring. Like
work from ahead, work out of trouble, don't put yourself
in trouble again. This is all common sense stuff. It's
easier said than executed. But maybe this time away while
(51:14):
essentially healthy, and I thought maybe the last time the
same would be true, because the two times since his
real return that he's left for a spot on the
injured list. Well, they haven't been elbows, shoulder, or arm related.
He's had a foot injury and a blister his arm,
his elbow, his throwing mechanics are fine and uninjured and
healthy anything else.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
So I do think there's.
Speaker 6 (51:38):
A possibility that the Lance mcclors that has a six
and a half RA not necessarily the only Lance mcclors
we're ever going to see again.
Speaker 5 (51:46):
No, I would hope not. But as it pertains to that,
and we'll get to some of those names, I'll just
say this, the guy the Astros were rumored to be
close to acquiring at the deadline, wouldn't he be on
that list?
Speaker 2 (52:06):
We'll have to find out. Yeah, I have to find out.
Next segment.
Speaker 6 (52:09):
We'll attack that topic with an unrelenting desire to give
you the information we have as a very never stopped
wordy way of saying that we are out of time
to do it this segment. Yeah, we're out of time
to do it this segment because it's just about over.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
But that's the tease for you. I hope you liked the.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
Eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (52:44):
It is the eight team spoor Sox seven ninety. All right,
let's get this finally let's get to this.
Speaker 2 (52:50):
Yeah, the twenty twenty five World Series champion Astros will
look a little bit different in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 6 (52:54):
I think that much is clear. They're position players. That's
gonna be fun. Isach Perettis, Carlos Correa, Jordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve,
Jeremy Paana, Cam Smith, Jake Myers, Jiner.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
Diaz, Christian Walker. It's going to be some team. Hey,
Sue Sanchez, mister five hits himself. Now.
Speaker 6 (53:16):
The pitching that will be an interesting one. Renel Blanco
and Hayden wiz Nesky will be on the sixty day
IL still or repositioned on the sixty day I l
at the beginning of next year, they won't be ready
to pitch. All the pitchers that the Astros were waiting
on will be contracted under contract Astros for the upcoming season.
(53:38):
Maybe a little different in the JP France situation. On
one hundred percent sure. By the way, JP France pitched
last night for the Space Cowboys five innings.
Speaker 2 (53:47):
Norn runs. Who's very good. He's ready, he's back. Huh.
Speaker 6 (53:50):
We will see if he is summoned to the Astros
at some point, but we know that they have some
concerns and questions and some possibilities to have a very
very very different looking starting rotation for twenty twenty six.
Pretty decent chance that when the Astros and Nationals Padreska
(54:12):
open up the season at Dyke and Park, Hunter Brown
will be on the mound for the Astros to throw
the first.
Speaker 2 (54:18):
Pitch of the season. Ace.
Speaker 6 (54:20):
Everything after that is I am not sure, and a
free agent acquisition seems like a real possibility, even though
they're spending twenty million dollars on both corner outfielders. They're
spending bigger money on Christian Javier next year, bigger money
on Jr. Don Alvarez next year, still big money on
Jose Altuve next year, more money with a new contract
(54:44):
under an arm year for esach Peretis, and on and
on and on. But I do think the possibility they
could find somebody that matches with them financially in free
agency to be a part of the front side of
their rotation. I told you there was a list of
ten MLB dot Com post to the list of the
ten free agents who will drive the free agent market.
Speaker 2 (55:04):
I already told you fromber Valdez is there while older.
Speaker 6 (55:08):
He has the best track record of any pitcher that
will be in free agency, but at age thirty two
and probably some GMS with Clanton like concerns. Man, this
guy's been awfully durable and awfully healthy for the other
team that got to use him. I don't know if
we want to be that team. Interesting though, that the
potential fits listed for Fromber are the Astros, along with
(55:30):
the Blue Jays and the Orioles. Kyle Tucker sits at
the top of this list quite obviously, at age twenty eight.
Talked about the season that might have been derailed by
his broken bone, but we don't know. He just didn't
hit very well and hasn't been hitting well for quite
some time. Potential fits Cubs, Giants, Phillies, teams we've all discussed.
We would probably also add the very big spending New
(55:52):
York Yankees. But I asked you to think about the
last couple of months leading up to the trade deadline.
I think about players that will hit free agency pictures specifically,
and come up with somebody who thought, whether it's a
position player or a pitcher, you thought would make this list,
and have the Astros listed as a potential fit.
Speaker 5 (56:14):
Well, since they were rumored to be in the market
to acquire him, but apparently backed off at the last
second because it was going to be Spencer Arraghetti going
the other way.
Speaker 6 (56:24):
Too costly from a asset package heading to San Diego. Dylan,
you're saying Dylan SE's dumped the gun there a little bit.
Speaker 2 (56:31):
My apologies.
Speaker 6 (56:31):
Well, you know what ceases on the list. He's number nine, right,
he's thirty years old. We know what I'm going to
tell you because we were talking about it before the deadline.
He struggled with consistency this season. He's got four to
sixty one ERA, his velocity, his fifth percentage, his strikeout
percentage all remains near the top of the league. He
also walks a billion batters. He's super durable. From ber
(56:57):
Valdez thinks Dylan Ceese is durable, but from ber Valdez
also throws pitches in the sixth and seventh inning with regularity,
and Dylan Cees doesn't. He is not listed as a
potential fit for the Astros this offseason, and I think
he would not have been a potential fit for the
Astros even if he spent two months with the Astros.
(57:17):
He'll probably get a contract that the team that signs
him to will regret. Blue Jays, Giants Orioles are the
teams listed as potential fit. The answer to the question
I'm looking for is in fact not a pitcher.
Speaker 5 (57:30):
Really well, can I before you get to that, can
I tell you who I would actually prefer? And he's
one spot down on this list. Yes, if the Astros
went and got Ranger Suarez, who is the same age
as Dylan Cees thirty and just I think he's fantastic.
(57:51):
Every time he's played against or pitched against the Astros,
it's been you're not get anything most of the time.
Speaker 2 (57:57):
Um, I'd be fine with that full time. I'm start
of the last four seasons in ERA under three and
a half, the last two I would agree he's awesome.
Speaker 6 (58:07):
I think every of all the pitcher Merril Kelly's out there,
a little bit older, Michael King is out there, probably
needs to pitch healthy the remainder of this season. He
was about to come back last week but ultimately did
not come back from injury, so that could be a
concern for any team looking at him.
Speaker 5 (58:24):
What is it that he actually is able to do?
Read the last sentence on his description on King. Yeah,
no on' swarez.
Speaker 6 (58:30):
So I was getting to that, like, Suarez is the
pitcher every GM should want, definitely Dana Brown and anybody
else that's willing to spend money. Final thing that they
say about him is he may not be coveted by
contenders as a number one, but Suarez could score a
nice deal as a number two or number three. I
think they're right in saying he might not get paid
(58:52):
like a number one, but when he's starting Game one
or two of your playoff.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
Series, he will be. You're going to be very, very happy.
Speaker 5 (58:59):
So your Hunter Brown, Ranger Suarez, Christian Javier rotation sounds
really nice after a full off season in spring training
of Javier trying to bounce back to where he was
prior to the injury.
Speaker 6 (59:13):
The player that is listed as a potential fit for
the Astros, the Phillies, and the Yankees is in the
second year of a three year, eighty million dollar deal,
though he is expected to opt out of the final year.
Speaker 2 (59:25):
In test free agency.
Speaker 6 (59:26):
Had an uneven twenty twenty four, but this year twenty
four bombs, seventy five RBI eight twenty three ops. He's
been out there for one hundred and sixteen games, essentially
all the games will have a four plus war season
for the second time in his last three He's been
a perfect fit where he is, but probably searching a
longer term deal than that most recent three year deal.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
He's aged thirty. No, his name is Cody Bellinger. Nope,
don't want that. Don't like that.
Speaker 6 (59:57):
I don't know if you guys know this or not,
but prior to last season, Jose al Tuove signed a
five year extension with the Astros. He's in here one
of that extension. Now, I think Jose Altuve is on
a short list of I want to win, and you
guys can bring anybody in here you want, and I
will make.
Speaker 2 (01:00:17):
It work and get along.
Speaker 6 (01:00:18):
And what's happened has happened, and let bygones be bygones.
Speaker 2 (01:00:21):
I fully believe that.
Speaker 6 (01:00:24):
I still don't think the Astros would be in the
market for Cody Bellinginger, though I do think he was
underrated when he hit this most recent free agency market
and has proven to be a very good signing for
the Yankees.
Speaker 5 (01:00:36):
He was awesome the last time the Astros played the Yankees,
especially when he was trying to play shallow left.
Speaker 6 (01:00:43):
He did throw a player an Astros player out during
the series. But he also had the comical I lost
the ball when I was trying to throw it in
that very same series.
Speaker 2 (01:00:52):
It looked like it like teleported to his ear. Yeah,
he was really good as a young player. We all
know that when he was with the Dodgers.
Speaker 6 (01:00:58):
Tailed off quite significantly with the Dodgers, so they had
no interest in bringing him back after his twenty one
and twenty two season and immediately became a very good
player again two years in Chicago. He was very good,
exceptional in the first of those years, and he's been
right there in the middle of those two years. He's
pretty much been an eight hundred and thirty ops guy
over the last three seasons, going to hit you twenty
(01:01:20):
five to thirty homers, and he does remarkably give you
plus defensive flexibility and that he can play multiple outfield spots,
including center field, and can play first base. They're not
that many players that play good defense at all those spots.
Speaker 5 (01:01:35):
Everybody knows jose Al Tuvey stole the Judge MVP. Everybody
knows they stole the ring from Odds.
Speaker 6 (01:01:43):
The only reason I would even consider quotes rubber stamping
the Astros signing Cody Bellinger to a lucrative multi year
deal is if they sent out the press release announcing
it along with the press conference and that he will
we will have.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
Open conversation with him. He'll be ready to meet with
the media.
Speaker 6 (01:02:04):
We're gonna introduce him, and we're gonna do so with
our partners at Sports Talk seven ninety. Cody Bellinger for
the first time as an Astro. We'll talk with you
at four to twenty in the afternoon on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 2 (01:02:15):
Ninety and I'm interviewing it.
Speaker 6 (01:02:17):
It has to be a four to twenty reference from
the Astros when they make the announcement that Cody Bellinger
is part of the ball.
Speaker 5 (01:02:24):
Just happened to get a text from a listener shout
out to Larry Hell. If you're signing Cody Bellinger, why
not not just go out and get Joe Kelly while
you're at it, agre Joe Kelly's bad at baseball, So
I don't think they'd be interested.
Speaker 4 (01:02:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:02:40):
The only reason I do not believe Cody Bellinger will
even be Scott might bring it up because Scott Boris
will be talking to the Astros this offseason, like every offseason,
not for long, but I don't think that they'll have
anything to say when he brings up what do you
guys think about Cody?
Speaker 5 (01:02:58):
We don't you know what the conversation with with Scott
Boris is going to be. Oh, you wanted how much
for fromber? Best of luck in your future endeavors.
Speaker 6 (01:03:06):
A team Bingo, We thank a listener for putting the
card in front of us, and we'll tell you how
we've done so far today.
Speaker 1 (01:03:14):
The AG on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:03:24):
It is the A team Sports Talk seven ninety Space
City Home Network on a Friday edition, getting you into
the weekend. Astros and Orioles, Game two of their four
game series getting underway in just a bit, as we
will get you prepared for that with the Astros on
Deck show, Brian McTaggart and company along for the ride there.
(01:03:45):
Chandler Rome will join us an hour from now, also
from Baltimore. Actually he's the only one in Baltimore. Brian
McTaggart did not make the trip up there this weekend,
but he will visit with us. Chandler Rome will visit
with us at four point thirty and we will get
into it all right.
Speaker 2 (01:04:01):
Speaking of getting into it.
Speaker 5 (01:04:03):
It's not often where Matt Thomas brings something to my
attention either on his show or tells me to go
look at something on Twitter.
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
And I'm like, ah, it's going to be the usual.
Speaker 5 (01:04:14):
He's gonna be, you know, doing what he always does,
talking about how we never host postgame shows, how we're always.
Speaker 2 (01:04:19):
All hosted a postgame show since yesterday. Well you haven't.
Speaker 6 (01:04:24):
We don't normally host them together, nor does he. That's
true solo mission. That's a good yeah. Why why do
we both have to do the pregame if only one
of us doesn't the most of a timing issue? Oh okay, good,
good to know during show hours.
Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
But man, so what did you tell you to go
look at?
Speaker 5 (01:04:39):
He comes around the corner during a commercial break and
we're out in the the other part of the building,
if you will, and he says, have you checked out
the eighteen bingo?
Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
I'm like, what are you talking about?
Speaker 5 (01:04:48):
He's like, you need to go to Twitter is what
he called it, because we all still do that from
time to time.
Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
I said, all right, I'll go check this out.
Speaker 5 (01:04:55):
I didn't even know he didn't even tag me, so
I had to go to his account. And and I'm look,
listeners are the best. They are what make it possible
for us to do what we do. And you know,
from time to time they'll submit something where it's just like,
oh this is this is cool, check this out, and
I'm like, it's all right. You know this delivered. This
(01:05:17):
absolutely delivered. I'm talking about the A Team Bingo And
by the way, since I saw the first version of it,
it's expanded.
Speaker 6 (01:05:26):
Are you were of this, Yes, That's why I put
the new Lincoln there so we don't wait to see it.
Stephen was nice enough to both listen to the show
and participate. And participation here is offering up a Bingo card.
It's five y five. There's twenty five items in it.
One of them is the free space. I was instructed
to not look at this and try to catch it
more fresh on the show, which allowed me to submit
(01:05:51):
my own ideas. I mean, I had some pretty good
ideas that are obviously here. I've now seen it. But
I wondered if maybe there was a square and you
can some of them get a little wordy, but I
wondered if there was a square that said a team
absolutely furious with each other and yet within the same
segment sounds like nothing happened to me. I feel like
(01:06:12):
that happens quite often and might be a nice spot
on your bingo car to mark through so you can win.
Usually during the simulcast portion, which we're in now, I
thought maybe a good category, maybe in the second spot,
would see a Wex eye roll followed by AC mid
sentence asking what's wrong, and Wex following up with a
(01:06:34):
lie and saying nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Does that not happen often enough?
Speaker 5 (01:06:39):
That'd be a nice bingle car play when something is
clearly wrong and bothering you nothing, nothing at all.
Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
I just pretend like no, nothing, pretend.
Speaker 5 (01:06:48):
As your body language does anything but plumped over, I've
let all the airs come out.
Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
I'm my fist might have bounded on the table.
Speaker 6 (01:07:00):
The fist and I also thought a segment opens with
the following AC first on Mike says, hey.
Speaker 5 (01:07:08):
Wex, Yeah, that's a big miss on this one.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:07:11):
I'm not going to criticize a lot, but that's a
big miss. Yeah, some of my favorites.
Speaker 6 (01:07:15):
Now that I've seen it, AC and Wex look up
NBA player nicknames. We don't do it every day, and
it's not basketball season. He was very specific to NBA
basketball reference is your friend when it comes to completely
ridiculous and no way in HT double hockey sticks anybody's
ever called that player that, and they have quite a
few of them.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
I kind of pull the string on this one.
Speaker 6 (01:07:36):
So this to me is like I work on the
Super Bowl Game Ops Committee and I'm handling the Kansas
City Chiefs gatorade bucket, so I already know what flavor,
what color it's going to be, and I make sure
to you know, not release that information to anybody who might
want to wager on it. I pull the string on
this the same way on the show, Ac does a
(01:07:57):
Trump impression.
Speaker 2 (01:07:58):
I ask for it quite often because I I more
than you guys know, and I feel like I heard
the words just said, or I know this how this
would be described, and I'd just like to hear how
the president would say.
Speaker 5 (01:08:10):
The best part of this eighteen bingo is that he
created it at my free bingo cards dot com and
made it very patriotic with stars and stripes. See we're
we're looking at this right now so we can see it.
A couple of Very America, a.
Speaker 6 (01:08:27):
Couple of shows ago, the trade Deadline, Baseball Trade Deadline
show was a good example of this excellent spot on
the Bingo card. Breaking news happens during the eighteen which
pisss off Matt Thomas, and.
Speaker 5 (01:08:41):
It's happened over the course of different time slots. Well,
we've always basically generally been in the same time slot,
but once the hour was added to all of our shows,
when it happens like in an hour that would have
been his old hour, it makes even more.
Speaker 6 (01:08:56):
Mad would have been mine. Clinton brings up a Twitter beef.
That seems like a good if you that's old school.
It's a good thing to have on the card.
Speaker 2 (01:09:05):
Yeah, that's old school though, because it didn't happen that
much anymore. Ac Trash's Jeff Passing, Yeah, that's I mean,
I you could have today and no last night he
broke the Craig kimberl signing.
Speaker 5 (01:09:18):
Yes, Cole sent us both the text of Passon's tweet
and what was my first inclination. It wasn't that I
was upset about Craig Kimberrel. I was like, of course,
Jeff Passon, is you know, relishing in this news that
Craig Kimberrel's carcass is now a member of the Astros
pitching staff.
Speaker 6 (01:09:35):
He'll be wearing number forty six. By the way, he's
a uniform and ready for action tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:09:38):
Shouldn't even be that close to jord On's jersey number. Now,
I was questioning this one if it was truly.
Speaker 6 (01:09:45):
A on us or has happened to us so often,
because I feel like it's happened all across the Sports
Talk seven to ninety landscape. The a team loses a
producer because another show takes them. Now we've had a
lot of producers bounced in between shows, or the producer
for this show is now gonna be producing for that
show that happened to the show preceding.
Speaker 2 (01:10:07):
Us Thomas way more Yet.
Speaker 6 (01:10:09):
Yes, in fact, our most recent producer prior to our
current producer was taken by another show. Yes, each and
every weekday morning alongside Sean Salisbury and The Sean Salisbury
Show One Dan Matthews. I don't know that that would
be a great spot on your BINGO card. It doesn't
happen that frequently. I would probably going to be stuck
there as a never xed out. If you're playing blackout,
(01:10:31):
you're probably never gonna win.
Speaker 5 (01:10:33):
It's like the opposite of a free space, which, by
the way, is on there.
Speaker 9 (01:10:35):
No, I just would say, instead of making it lose
the producer, I'm plotting my revenge to make sure I
kick both of you guys off the show and I
get the show by myself.
Speaker 2 (01:10:42):
Producers that think like that don't last very long. You know,
some threatening words here.
Speaker 5 (01:10:47):
By the way, Chandler rome will join the show today,
and that is one of the spots.
Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
Chandler Romeo joins the show.
Speaker 6 (01:10:54):
That's kind of a I mean, if you play the
game on a Friday, it's a great free space. He
joins the show every Friday. It's not a happened stance
of conversation. When the A team uh makes a movie reference.
That's a daily occurrence. But if you just got to
make sure you're locked in when it happens. I don't
think we've done it yet. We have done it today,
haven't we?
Speaker 2 (01:11:10):
I think so did we? We did?
Speaker 5 (01:11:14):
First hour, Clinton tells Wex that he can't stand him.
Actually usually I say you're the worst. Yeah, but that's
why I think Hughes, Wex and Clinton spend the entire
segment off topic.
Speaker 2 (01:11:28):
Will that happen like yesterday? Currently? No this is right
on topic. The topic is the show, right.
Speaker 6 (01:11:35):
Would you still be able to x out the square?
If right at the end of the segment, I tried
to talk about sports, because I do that a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
That might be the card to play. I'll be enjoyed it,
and Stephen, we absolutely appreciate listening and in this case
contributing with the A team Bingo.
Speaker 1 (01:11:52):
The Age on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (01:12:00):
Fact one day out from a college football season beginning
a host of games tomorrow and then next week we
got a host of day's worth of games all weekend
long before Saturday and into the following Monday. Cannot wait
for more of that, obviously, we look forward to the
teams you'll hear right here in fact to week from
(01:12:22):
Saturday morning, you will hear the Longhorns at Ohio State
right here on Sports Talk seven to ninety Cougar's You
heard from Eddie Nunez for the full final hour of
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. They will open their
season a little bit before the weekend, a Thursday evening
game to kick off another year with coach Fritz meant
(01:12:42):
to say to Eddie on his way out when I
was talking to him that I had hoped that they
were not opening up their new operations center to the
media today in the afternoon during our show, which they did,
because I had been there at the onset and when
they broke ground, when they the first dirt throw, and
every step of the way. So it'd be nice to
(01:13:03):
have seen it in this form. I'll get over there
and I'm sure I will see it. Maybe not in
this form, but it is awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
It's going to be great for you, of h We
will have a lot of Big twelve football chatter here.
Speaker 6 (01:13:14):
Along with SEC football chatter here. Very much looking forward
to it, obviously. Our show today will take you into
Astros Baseball, Astros and Orioles Game two. Lance mccullors on
the mound tonight throwing his pitches to Jiner Diaz. The
lineup tonight for the Astros against left handed throwing caid Povich.
And if you know anything about the Astros roster, you
(01:13:35):
should already know once I say left handed pitching caid
Povich that even though he had five hits yesterday, Hey,
sus Sanchez is not going to be in any lineup
with a left handed starter. If you have a healthy
roster and the Astros do Payna, Correa, Altuve, and Christian
Walker go one, two, three four. Altuve not at second
base tonight. He's the designated hitter Jan Diaz behind Walker,
(01:13:59):
Walker and Daz each with two run homers in yesterday's game,
Walker tied Diaz for second on the team or third
on the team excuse me and homers with his seventeenth
and a few minutes later, Diaz moved back ahead of
him with number eighteen. Second base is Ramonerius. Dubon is
in left, batting seventh, Cam Smith in right, batting eighth,
(01:14:19):
and manning center field is Chas McCormick. He will bat ninth.
Hopefully he will not pitch. I feel like I have
to say until he doesn't for like a while. Well,
their bullpen is in very good shape, remarkably.
Speaker 2 (01:14:32):
Even with Craig kimberl Well.
Speaker 6 (01:14:34):
Kimberle is fresh, Kimberrel is fresh. A brayw is fresh.
I can't believe I can't tell you that Susa is
fresh because he's not available. If you missed that earlier,
he just went on the fifteen day il with left
elbow inflammation. The Astros transferred Brandon Walter to the sixty
day IL with that left elbow inflammation that reoccurred as
(01:14:59):
he was going through his throwing program in an attempt
to return this season. And I told you earlier when
he went on the sixty day IL that means his
season is over. Technically doesn't, but his season is over.
Sixty days could elapse before the season ends, it will
elapse before the season ends, but he won't be pitching
for the.
Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
Astros this year.
Speaker 6 (01:15:18):
It was more of a procedural move, not necessarily related
specifically to the timeline of his healthy recovery, but rather
you take a guy off of the forty man roster
by placing them on the sixty day IL, along with
sending Logan van Y back to TRIPAA. That's how they
open up two spots on the active roster. Lance mccullors
obviously has one of them, and newly signed Craig Kimbrel
(01:15:41):
has the other. Bryce Matthews, as you know, is already
on the team's not yet been in the lineup for
either of the two games he's been backed for. He
took the roster spot of Taylor Tremmel when Tremmeell went
on the IL yesterday before this series, after being injured
in the final game of the Tigers.
Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
Well, it's the day of the week, so somebody's got
to go on the shelf. He can't.
Speaker 5 (01:16:00):
He can't have nice things this year in twenty twenty five.
If you're the Houston Astros, how.
Speaker 6 (01:16:04):
About the Orioles. Yesterday they put Adlei Rutchman on the aisle.
They said Basillo, their young hot shot prospect catcher, would
essentially be there everyday catcher. They then agreed to terms
on a long term, eight year, sixty seven million dollar
deal with him.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
And then he's not catching tonight. Well, of course not.
Why would he Maybe he can't hit right hand at pitching.
I don't. I don't know. Did they have a logjam
at catcher now?
Speaker 10 (01:16:30):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:16:30):
I think like the Astros do at third base.
Speaker 6 (01:16:32):
I think they're open to the idea of Bisillo playing
elsewhere on occasion while Richmond catches, or vice versa.
Speaker 2 (01:16:40):
A situation could be. I think it could be.
Speaker 6 (01:16:44):
But it doesn't mean they're It doesn't, by no means
means they're unhappy with Rutchman, even though he's having a
very poor season. I did not know this until it
was pointed out by a couple of the National reporters
Bissalo was set to be a Yankee and they were
going to use the their international pool money to sign
him a little over a million dollars, but they lost
(01:17:05):
their international pool money. The Yankees did that off season
because they signed Garrett Cole.
Speaker 2 (01:17:12):
And he's doing a lot for them this year.
Speaker 6 (01:17:15):
People might want to look at it like, man, look
what they missed out on. That's silly.
Speaker 5 (01:17:19):
You got Garrett Cole, Carrott Cole. Yeah, he's won a
cy young. He's been fantastic when he has been healthy
and now he's not. So, by the way, with the
timeframe of his injury, when does he realistically pitch again
for the Yankees. It's kind of like Verlander's case, is
it not?
Speaker 2 (01:17:37):
Because it early?
Speaker 6 (01:17:38):
It is, but there's no reason he won't return early.
You may June of twenty twenty six, something like.
Speaker 2 (01:17:46):
That, but didn't.
Speaker 5 (01:17:47):
So, like Verlander pitched a game in twenty twenty, then
you had the stoppage of the season and uh COVID
and all that happened. But he didn't pitch in twenty
one either, did he No, So it was two full
years essentially.
Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
Well, think about when you said he got hurt at
the beginning of the season. When was the beginning of
that season though, the difference when the beginning of the
season was August. That's right.
Speaker 5 (01:18:13):
I always forget that it was just put on hold
and then they didn't start again until August.
Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
Okay, that makes more sense now.
Speaker 6 (01:18:18):
I think in the neighborhood of a you know, fourteen
fourteen month recovery for Garrett Cole would put him. Like
I said, I think it's mid May now, looking at
an article written about that mid May June somewhere.
Speaker 2 (01:18:30):
Incial setbacks. Ever, everything goes as they hope, is right.
You know, I have no doubt he will come back.
Speaker 5 (01:18:35):
Probably well, he's never going to be better than he
was because he's not wearing an Astros uniform, because that's
when he was at his best. He'll never convince me
otherwise that he was. He'll ever be better than twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (01:18:46):
Would argue with him, like he won the Cy Young
as a Yankee.
Speaker 5 (01:18:49):
But the only reason you didn't win the sy Young
is he an Astro is because Verlander was just that well.
Verlander had a no hitter. That's I'm convinced. Verlander's no
hitter and the month of April into May. For Garrett,
Cole kept him from getting that Cy Young.
Speaker 6 (01:19:04):
Yeah, your best year might not be a cy Young
year because you're not competing against yourself in any other year.
You're competing against the guys that are out there that year.
If you didn't have the best season that year, well
you're not gonna win a Cy Young. And you can
go out some other year and be slightly less successful.
But if you out pitch everybody else, well there's your
Cy Young. That's essentially what happened with Cole. If you
believe he didn't outperform justin Verlander, it was incredibly close,
(01:19:28):
and he spent the last four months of the season
as one of the most unbeatable pitchers anybody's ever seen
for that period of time. To essentially be unbeatable, and
I don't just meet the team winning. I mean he's
just blowing teams away, untouchable.
Speaker 5 (01:19:44):
By the way, with regard to that very point in
that postseason, and Verlander was good, Cole was way more dominant.
If you go look back, look at what he did
at Yankee Stadium. Ironically, he was unhittable that night. You
just I don't know, he was crazy good. I'm glad
he's I'm glad he's uh, he's never gonna be better
(01:20:05):
than that. I'm confident saying that, even with the extended
time left on his deal.
Speaker 6 (01:20:11):
With the five nineteen postseason starts, he allowed one run
or less, he won at least seven and all five.
Speaker 2 (01:20:20):
He was insane.
Speaker 5 (01:20:21):
All right, four o'clock hour is straight ahead. It will
involve that conversation with Chandler Rome, among other.
Speaker 1 (01:20:26):
Things, the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety two lifelong
Houston sports guys named Adham talking your team.
Speaker 2 (01:20:39):
He's so very.
Speaker 1 (01:20:42):
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler.
Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
A d a teeny.
Speaker 5 (01:20:50):
Four o'clock hour underway here on sports SOX seven ninety
thirty minutes from right now. Chandler Rome will be on
the show as per the A team being go by
the way, just because I saw it and just because
it lends itself to the topic of us having a
bingo card about things that happened on the show.
Speaker 2 (01:21:09):
Hey whatx so forty three years ago? This week? Forty
three years ago this week?
Speaker 5 (01:21:17):
Okay, the very first commercial compact disc was released, and
in this post, the question that accompanies it is the following,
what was the first CD you ever bought.
Speaker 6 (01:21:33):
I wish I didn't disappoint people like this lead in
I'm disappointed already on yourself. I knew the question was
coming as you delivered that information, and I spent the
five to ten seconds racking my brain.
Speaker 2 (01:21:49):
I don't know, I can't remember. Gosh, dude, dumb. You're
not dumb, You're just disappointing. That's what I just said.
It's very disappointing.
Speaker 5 (01:21:58):
I have CDs still, you don't remember the first one
you got, like with a gift card or with your
own money.
Speaker 2 (01:22:05):
I went to Sam Goodie and got one exactly. That's
where I got mine.
Speaker 5 (01:22:08):
Like people, people gave me CDs because I got a
CD player for Christmas.
Speaker 2 (01:22:13):
So what year is this?
Speaker 5 (01:22:15):
I mean forty three years ago this week. So but
that doesn't mean that that was when you two or three. Yeah,
but but that doesn't mean that's the year you got
your first CD. Like I didn't get my first CD
until like nineteen ninety because I didn't have a CD
player until then.
Speaker 2 (01:22:30):
So see I tell you what it was, So I
know the first CD I ever bought.
Speaker 6 (01:22:34):
CDs were introduced right around the time that Julia was
gonna marry Gulia, Julia Gulia was going to be her
new name. He had just purchased a It's a CD
player the eighties. It plays compact discs. Right, it's a
CD player. Yeah, it's only six seven hundred bucks.
Speaker 2 (01:22:51):
Right, it's a great.
Speaker 5 (01:22:52):
Number DVD players when they first came out, and several
hundred dollars.
Speaker 2 (01:22:55):
Okay, So I'm gonna guess.
Speaker 6 (01:22:57):
You know, in my teen years, which is the mid
eighties to the nineties, I was that's when I was
buying CDs, But I can't remember what would have been
released that I can even make an educated guess on it.
Speaker 2 (01:23:11):
I mean, Appetite for Destruction. That was eighty seven.
Speaker 5 (01:23:15):
I want to say that was my brother's CD, not mine.
Speaker 2 (01:23:19):
I listened to it. I had it so sad access
to it.
Speaker 5 (01:23:21):
We salute you it was his, both for the fact
that that was your CD and for the fact that
you can probably remember it. He definitely can remember. He's smart,
but he probably also remembers the first one. He But
I hope he's listening right now and text you.
Speaker 6 (01:23:34):
Like it's probably not even someone that something that was
just just released.
Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
Mine was.
Speaker 6 (01:23:40):
Well, help us out here and make this second less awful.
From me from including me in it.
Speaker 2 (01:23:46):
It was uh.
Speaker 5 (01:23:48):
I got my first CD player in nineteen ninety for Christmas,
So the month prior to that, maybe it was ninety one. No,
it was ninety one because the month prior to that,
Michael Jackson released Dangerous and that's the first CD I
ever bought, and it had the long sleeve in it.
Because if you're old enough to remember that, I was.
Speaker 6 (01:24:09):
Trying to remember what Van Halen CD would have been
released in.
Speaker 2 (01:24:13):
That era for Unlawful Cardinal Knowledge. That was eighty eight,
so I think it was OU eight one two, which
was eighty That was eighty eight.
Speaker 5 (01:24:23):
That's the one with is that the one with the uh,
that's not the one with the guy holding up the planet.
Speaker 2 (01:24:29):
It's black and white with their four faces. Because that
the one I'm thinking of was eighty six. I don't
remember when that one was. Eight five. May not have
been the first, but it probably was in the early hall.
That's by the way. That's an acceptable answer. Took a
little research because I'm dumb. I needed a little help.
Speaker 5 (01:24:46):
Well, you're bad with years, so it's not dumb so
much as just you just don't have any.
Speaker 6 (01:24:50):
You know, where the CD player in your house is currently.
Speaker 2 (01:24:55):
I don't have one in my house. Dispatched. We don't.
Speaker 5 (01:24:58):
We just don't have any. We do not have a
single CD player. No, you know what, I take that back.
There is a retro, which is awful, but the retro
also goes for the vinyl and the cassette.
Speaker 2 (01:25:08):
They're all.
Speaker 5 (01:25:09):
It's an all in one that I got her that
she wanted. I think for Christmas two years ago. That
was one of the gifts I got her because she
wanted it. She found it and liked it because it
mainly for the record play.
Speaker 6 (01:25:18):
That we're hoarders. Although this is gonna sound like we're hoarders.
I know I know where it is. I mean, it's
it's easily accessible. Should I want to plug it in
and dust it off? The gaming machines that offer you
the ability to play both DVDs and CDs, I think.
Speaker 2 (01:25:34):
In PlayStation does the PS five play CDs? I don't
know if the PS five does. I'm going to find
that out tonight.
Speaker 5 (01:25:41):
Cole, what was the first one you bought?
Speaker 2 (01:25:45):
I really don't want to tell you, guys, but you
can't bring that up.
Speaker 5 (01:25:49):
You'd say, I know what my first one was, and
then say, just kidding, it was this Century right?
Speaker 2 (01:25:54):
It was Ocean Eyes by Owl City. Wow, I understand
why you wanted it about it.
Speaker 9 (01:26:00):
I was trying to impress a girl. I just got
a car. I'd saved some money for my first job.
We went and we went my two thousand and two
Cherry Red Musk sang to target. She was really an
ol City, And I went and bought Ocean Eyes and
we played it throughout my car for next two days.
Speaker 2 (01:26:16):
I think Billy Ocean would have been less embarrassing.
Speaker 6 (01:26:18):
I think some of the other early ones that I
have obviously were released long before that. Led Zeppelin four Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:26:28):
Which by the way, is misrepresented in Fast Times in
Ridgemont High.
Speaker 2 (01:26:31):
At Ridgemont High, the song they play is not on
led Zeppelin four. Why would you put that in the movie? Though?
Like these people that made that movie on that album.
But it's like, it's.
Speaker 5 (01:26:41):
Yeah, Kashmir is not on the album. He references, why
would you do that?
Speaker 6 (01:26:45):
Maybe they were trying to let us know without telling
us that Damon is dumb.
Speaker 5 (01:26:48):
But it's legit. The only thing about that movie that's
not perfect. I would I would go along with that.
Speaker 6 (01:26:53):
Okay, So they pointed out that something happened about forty
three years ago.
Speaker 2 (01:26:56):
Good Stuff. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:26:57):
When it debuted in nineteen eighty two, it promised quote
perfect sound forever, ushering in a new digital era that
reshaped how the world consumed music. By the end of
the nineteen nineties and early two thousands, CDs weren't just
a format.
Speaker 2 (01:27:12):
They were the industry.
Speaker 6 (01:27:13):
Now if you were too grat do you even have
a CD in the house? Oh yeah, okay, I think so.
It's the best CD box set anthology whatever you got
still at the house.
Speaker 5 (01:27:23):
I mean, my whole collection was in one of those
oversized books, and then I got a second.
Speaker 2 (01:27:28):
Book so you could take it into your car.
Speaker 5 (01:27:30):
Yeah, this is very dangerous looking at your phone trying
to find an MP three. Really hold my beer as
I thumb through this novel of CDs.
Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
That's awful.
Speaker 5 (01:27:39):
Well, and I was shifting because you know that's called
a manual transmission.
Speaker 2 (01:27:45):
Kids, I know you don't know what that is.
Speaker 5 (01:27:46):
And they only even make them anymore in most cars,
you know, bring those back. I love a stick shift
way better. It's more to do, it's more control, it's
more like it. It's all about how you think of it.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
I guess my best would be.
Speaker 6 (01:28:02):
And I don't even know if it's called the Essential
or the best of or whatever it is. It was
the box set of like the first twelve CDs.
Speaker 2 (01:28:12):
In the Joe Satriani collection.
Speaker 5 (01:28:14):
Speaking of twelve CDs, did you ever get that many
for a penny each? And then get into credit card
debt like everybody else in the country.
Speaker 2 (01:28:23):
Our friends over at Columbia House saluted, Columbia House can
go to hell.
Speaker 5 (01:28:26):
Okay, that's just so disingenuous and deceptive, and I just
can't believe they did that to kids like me. I
didn't get in credit card debt, but that was, you
know what, that was my first bill that I never
intended to pay or never Well, no, what I'm saying
is they the back end of it where they screw.
Speaker 6 (01:28:45):
You over right, and you need your you're contractually obligated
to buy two more at regular prices, and then over
the next year's time another two wow, something like.
Speaker 5 (01:28:55):
For someone who can't remember years, you've got that whole
thing down, not years. But what I meant I didn't
phrase that properly. What I meant to say was I
didn't intend to have that situation on my ledger and
it was and so I had to take care of it.
And that was the first that type of responsibility that
I learned.
Speaker 6 (01:29:11):
So in light of the limited time we have left
in this segment, as I help out Steven and everybody
else that's printed up their Bingo card and knows a
segment that's been derailed that gets back on tracks in
the final moments.
Speaker 2 (01:29:21):
By wex You're welcome. That would be here.
Speaker 6 (01:29:24):
There's an athletic rite up with the Rockets fans weighing
in on a bunch of survey materials about the direction
of the team, some signings they made, bunch of other stuff.
But Kelly Eagle also noted Tarr Easton's contract extension currently
does not exist. Do you think it will before the
season begins?
Speaker 10 (01:29:41):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:29:43):
Do you think it should? No?
Speaker 5 (01:29:46):
I want to see him not not play on back
to back nights before they invest heavily in him. And
maybe that's harsh in my book. I love Tari, Don't
get me wrong. I love everything about Tari. I even
like the social media aspect of the total package with
Tari if you know what I mean for sure, But
I just feel like, if you are, if you're investing
(01:30:08):
even semi heavily. It's not like they're gonna max him out.
You know, you're taking a significant chunk of the cap
from a team that is going to need to be
paying him.
Speaker 2 (01:30:18):
In Thompson, and.
Speaker 6 (01:30:20):
Is there a contract years and or figure that you'd
be okay with prior to this season beginning.
Speaker 5 (01:30:27):
I'm not as good on the figure, but I think
like a three year basically what you gave uh Jalen.
Speaker 6 (01:30:34):
So like casting aside the obvious concerns where he goes
from here and the injury side of it. When you
watch them play in the postseason last year pre Durant
and with Jalen Dylan, obviously it'd appear that he's going
to play a large role moving forward in this team
being very good.
Speaker 5 (01:30:49):
He's going to need to spell along with him in somewhat.
But what you lost in Dylan, you're not going to
just make up unless Tari's a big part of things.
In my opinion, I think he's going to be the
one that kind of fills the defensive gap at least,
and I think while he's not as prolific or at
least last year a three point shooter as Dylan was,
because he led the team in percentages from distance. He's
(01:31:12):
he will be able to contribute offensively enough to negate
that yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:31:18):
Dropped down to thirty four percent from three, which is
where he was as a rookie. He was at thirty
six percent during his brief second season, and that obviously
is of great concert. He played every single game as
a rookie and has not quite played that many games
combined since then seventy nine games over the last two seasons.
But obviously, like we hope with everybody on this current team,
when they're healthy for the playoffs, that kind of is
(01:31:41):
all that we're really focused on, and I think that
really could go a long way. Dorian Phinney Smith fits
into that category of where Tari helps this team. But
probably on the short term. It is a four year
deal for Finney Smith very easily turned into a two
year deal, and that that was the only two seasons
that are guaranteed on it.
Speaker 2 (01:31:58):
I think a lot of that will go into it.
Speaker 6 (01:32:00):
I kind of think they might find common ground and
they might be able to come to an agreement that
makes sense for both sides, and likely in just the
way you described, far less than the max and probably
not particularly long term, have an extension with Jabari Smith Junior.
Obviously we're able to do that with Alprin Shngoon, and
we'll be talking about this very thing already being done
(01:32:20):
next offseason when the names of men Thompson.
Speaker 5 (01:32:23):
Well, that's why I was just about to say. It
might sound crazy, but it's really not. Amn Thompson's extension
is far more important to the Rockets and should be
far more important to Rockets fans than Kevin Durantz would
be extension. So a lot to think about and a
lot to be excited about as we get ready for
what will be a very very memorable for one reason
(01:32:46):
or another Rockets basketball season coming.
Speaker 6 (01:32:48):
Out segue into contract extension talk in Texas for the
team run by Jerry It's coming your way.
Speaker 1 (01:32:57):
Next the on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:33:12):
The A team Rave on Sports Talk seven ninety. I
thought about saying something else, but I think I'll keep
my job, all right, So we have established that Jerry
Jones is very bad at running a football team. He
owns right, there's no disputing that at this point point
(01:33:36):
of order.
Speaker 6 (01:33:37):
Oh boy, you can dispute it if you believe in
certain different things. He's very bad at running a football team.
Exactly as you said, if you're trying to win football games.
Speaker 2 (01:33:49):
Well, yeah, I didn't mean marketing the team.
Speaker 6 (01:33:51):
I said running a football team to make them valuable
and make money off of that product that you've purchased
you now own. He has been successful.
Speaker 5 (01:34:02):
Do you think Cole, since he's still relatively new to
the show, do you think he has heard my favorite
Jerry Jones SoundBite that you could probably pull up very
easily in the system by just typing in his name.
Speaker 2 (01:34:13):
It's got to still be there.
Speaker 6 (01:34:14):
An the way our system works, it's very hard to find.
I know where to look for it, but I bet
it's not there anyway.
Speaker 5 (01:34:20):
This is one of those times where I should have
told you this during the break, but you like it
better when I tell you on the air during the segment.
Give me what is it about? It's about going to
the zoo, That's what I thought. I mean, come on,
is there any other better one?
Speaker 10 (01:34:34):
No? Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:34:36):
Not in there? I don't think so.
Speaker 8 (01:34:38):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:34:38):
We've got the best technology here.
Speaker 6 (01:34:41):
Well, I mean, like I said, I could go elsewhere
and try to find it. I don't think it's going
to be there.
Speaker 10 (01:34:45):
But I don't have the patience to jack with you today.
Speaker 2 (01:34:48):
Yeah, that's not it, I know, but that's that's the best.
Speaker 10 (01:34:51):
I well, doctor Jones with my rubber glove is going
to make sure every one out of your safe.
Speaker 2 (01:34:57):
Where are you finding these in the system? You see
to have a Jerry system.
Speaker 5 (01:35:01):
Well, but like that's the thing. This should be as
easy as typing in Jerry Jones and Monkeys.
Speaker 2 (01:35:07):
We have a system that likes to just boots stuff
out of.
Speaker 5 (01:35:12):
Here exactly unwarranted, unasked. Uh, just on its own, has
a mind of its own pretty much. Uh, while you
find that it okay, while you don't find that. Listen,
Jerry and Micah Parsons are not going to come together
on a deal, and he's not going to play for
(01:35:33):
the Cowboys again. That's my hot take of the four
o'clock out. I take as cold you think it's gonna happen.
He's definitely playing for the Cowboys again. I definitely think that.
Speaker 2 (01:35:43):
What if he demands a trade. Oh wait, he's already done.
Speaker 6 (01:35:45):
That whenever he's deemed healthy to play if he's not currently.
Speaker 5 (01:35:48):
Like all these guys that do these stupid holdouts where
they end up coming back, none.
Speaker 6 (01:35:52):
Of before he calls this a stupid holdout. Let's give
you some of the facts. Michah Parsons has now finally
scrubbed his social met with cowboys.
Speaker 2 (01:36:01):
Why would you call this stupid? And it's not even
a holdout, it's a hold in. He's there.
Speaker 5 (01:36:06):
But what I'm saying is guys have done even that before,
But they even then have not demanded a trade.
Speaker 2 (01:36:12):
All right, So some of these he has, he has
demanded a trade.
Speaker 6 (01:36:17):
Jerry I think multiple times, extremely publicly, even before this
last week's media blitz, that Jerry is On has done
what he's done so many times before. Dak wasn't the
first one, and Mike is not the second one, and
Ceedee Lamb wasn't the third one. They're like the tenth, eleventh, twelfth,
fifteenth one where he's tried to be so overwhelmingly involved
(01:36:40):
in the negotiations he gets to dictate who else isn't
involved in the negotiations. He's also said things that you
would think an owner would never say publicly about a
player he's about to come to an agreement on who's
then gonna be one of the faces of the franchise
and play great football in your uniform for your team,
which you are clearly whom you are clearly trashing publicly
(01:37:04):
with your comments. Michael Parsons just happens to be the
latest on the other side of it, as we somewhat
ask you to just go ahead and pick sides. At
this point, Jerry had intimated that they offered him a
deal that would have made him the highest paid player
non quarterback in the NFL, and Adam Schefter finally today
(01:37:28):
had a report indicating the very same thing, with the
figures for it, and you know, kind of painting it.
Speaker 8 (01:37:35):
Well.
Speaker 6 (01:37:35):
They've offered him a deal one hundred and forty seven
million and guaranteed money, to which it was declined rejected,
with sources indicating the reason for its rejection was it's
more than money.
Speaker 2 (01:37:47):
What we're talking about here.
Speaker 6 (01:37:48):
There's more to this negotiation, or to this agreement, or
to this partnership than money. And I don't I'm not
sure what that means anymore, because it's never about anything
but money, because that's what ultimately ends up getting done.
You weren't going to sign a deal for this amount,
but you will sign a deal for that amount. So
Jerry Jones is on this tour of the media sat
down with Michael Irvin, you know his team, member of
(01:38:12):
the media right also a former cowboy right now, he
is a member of the media.
Speaker 2 (01:38:15):
I don't mean to knock him that way.
Speaker 6 (01:38:16):
He's been covering the NFL for various entities for a
long time now and everybody has an outlet a podcast.
Speaker 2 (01:38:22):
Jerry Jones talked with him.
Speaker 6 (01:38:25):
And he said, when the agent and the agent is
David Mullageta athletes first, you guys should be very familiar
with him. Has negotiated a boatload of contracts across the league,
and a handful of very big ones right here in Houston,
most recently for Derrek Stingley Junior, prior to that with
Deshaun Watson. His client plays quarterback for the Houston Texans
(01:38:45):
as well CJ. Strout, and he's now widely regarded as
the best agent in the NFL if you're talking about
the amount of money he and his clients have been
able to generate together with their contract signings. That's why
he's number one. He's had an unbelievable three to five
year run in the NFL. And the job of the
agent is to do right by the client. The client
(01:39:08):
is paying him to work for him, and the people
that have him as their agent and athletes first couldn't
be any happier, absolutely thriving and loving the time they've
spent together. Jalen Ramsey is another one. You see, Horn
is another one. He's doing his job at the best
level you could ever think of from a player's perspective.
(01:39:29):
You know, the people that pay him, he's doing his
job tremendously well. So Jerry said to Michael that the
offer was presented to the agent, and he said the
agent told him something that has been refuted by just
about everybody who could possibly be involved in this, those
who know Mulligeda, Muligeta himself. He then had to go
on the offensive to at least say when Jerry said this,
(01:39:51):
when we wanted to send the details to the agent,
the agent told us to stick it up our wow backside,
And that has been widely refine. You did buy Muligeta himself,
either through his own statement or others who have spoken
with him since then. It going so far as they
have never even uttered that phrase before. So this is
where things are headed, and it has constantly been treated
(01:40:12):
from Jerry's perspective as the agent is in the way. Somehow,
the agent doesn't belong here. It isn't done because of
the agent. And now there are players that represent themselves,
this isn't one of them. DeAndre Hopkins has represented himself,
Laramie Tunzel has represented himself, and Jerry Jones continues to
(01:40:34):
negotiate with cowboys as if they represent themselves, but they don't.
And I don't know where people stand on this. I'll
give you a little bit of what he had to
say in his sit down with Steven A.
Speaker 2 (01:40:47):
Smith.
Speaker 6 (01:40:48):
First, I don't really know if everybody's going to follow
along with this, because it took me a minute to
understand where he might be headed with this. But this
is Jerry Jones, I think, describing the situation where everybody
that's involved doesn't necessarily need to be involved in the spirit.
Speaker 10 (01:41:05):
Of not doing the old mother dad deal. How many
times have you seen the little radscal so Clever go
in there and Mama told him you're not going to
get it, and goes into Daddy, who only sees him
at that after five and after none wants to love
him and says, you can have it, son, you can
(01:41:27):
have that before dinner, and he goes back in and says, Mama,
Daddy said I could have it, and said mom and
dad had been around since the beginning the time.
Speaker 2 (01:41:36):
I'm not going to go for that year. That's what's happening.
You're not going for it.
Speaker 10 (01:41:43):
I'm not going for it. No, No, We've had a
very very strong negotiation.
Speaker 2 (01:41:50):
He's not going to go for that. Here, what a weirdo.
Speaker 6 (01:41:54):
So that was a weird enough analogy to get into
what he's ultimately saying, which is what I was leading into,
about some sort of reason that he believes he can
negotiate a contract with a player who believes in his agent,
but he can negotiate that contract with the player without
the agent.
Speaker 2 (01:42:09):
He continued with the following.
Speaker 10 (01:42:12):
Frankly, it wouldn't have made any difference what the negotiation was.
Guess who has to be comfortable for this to work?
Speaker 2 (01:42:22):
Michael and who else?
Speaker 10 (01:42:24):
You? Hello, there's not room for a third. There's not
room for a third. This will be a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:42:32):
Oh, you're so screwed, Dallas.
Speaker 5 (01:42:36):
I hope you enjoy another miserable season because it's on
deck meeting.
Speaker 6 (01:42:40):
Hypothetically, there's a meeting set up between the Cowboys which
will include Jerry Steven and some other members of the
executive staff, and they've set up a meeting with Micah
Parsons and his agent and maybe a couple other people
with athletes first and they reach the facility, they head upstairs.
Speaker 2 (01:42:57):
They're guided upstairs. The conference room has been booked.
Speaker 6 (01:43:00):
It's marked off for Jerry, and Jerry and Stephen and
the rest of the Cowboys. Side of the table is
full and they're ready, and there's food and drinks and
everything's set up and got a presentation ready to go.
Speaker 2 (01:43:11):
They're all set.
Speaker 6 (01:43:12):
Micah's first in line, David Uligedta right behind him, and
the other members of the athlete's first family that have
joined them for the meeting, and Micah walks in.
Speaker 2 (01:43:20):
Jerry shakes his hand and guides him to the.
Speaker 6 (01:43:22):
Chair and closes the door in the face of the
agent and says, there's no room for a third I mean, it's.
Speaker 2 (01:43:32):
That's certainly one way to go about your business, Jerry.
Speaker 6 (01:43:35):
I gave you all this, I played you all this,
we described all this, and there will be an announcement
sometime during twenty twenty five, whether it's right before the
season or during the season. I actually think they're going
to come to an agreement on a long term deal.
Speaker 5 (01:43:51):
So one party's not going to tell the other party
to continue sticking it up here.
Speaker 2 (01:43:55):
You know what. Allegedly that was one side vehemently denied
by the.
Speaker 6 (01:44:00):
Heading into the fifth year of his rookie deal, the
option year option to franchise tag him in the future
would be available to the Cowboys for a sixth and
then seventh season.
Speaker 2 (01:44:10):
Well, I can't wait for those offseasons.
Speaker 6 (01:44:11):
I mean, if they don't come to a long term agreement, boys,
he's going to be even more unhappy.
Speaker 5 (01:44:15):
Then, right, These quotes are gonna get saucier. I can't wait.
Speaker 6 (01:44:20):
This is a player on his team, arguably the best
player on his team.
Speaker 5 (01:44:26):
Well, nobody appreciates him more than Jerry, just as Jerry.
Speaker 6 (01:44:30):
Also said that too. You know, we love him here.
He's great for us, but he also misses too many games.
But he also said, homeie, don't play.
Speaker 1 (01:44:37):
That the age on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (01:44:47):
About a half hour from how we will get into
the Astros on Deck show. Before we get there, I
want to welcome in our weekly guest here on a Friday,
that is Chandler Rome Astros in Baltimore with Lance McCullers
Junior on the mound making his return from the latest
stint of his on the IL and Chandler very typical,
still unfortunate. You and Joe a spot and the rest
(01:45:08):
of the assembled media had to have a conversation about
another player situation on the injured list as Bennett's SUSA
heads there. What did Joe have to say about where
things stand and why this move was made with Bennett?
Speaker 7 (01:45:20):
Yeah, it sounds like he felt something in his elbows
doubting on Tuesday in Detroit, and they saw or they
pulled during his you know, maybe give them a day
or two off from throwing. What would help it?
Speaker 2 (01:45:32):
To think we're going to stop the conversation where we're at.
Speaker 5 (01:45:35):
Why does this always happen with him? This is also
on the Bingo card. By the way, iHeart phones screwing up.
That was on the Bingo card.
Speaker 6 (01:45:42):
To better serve our guest who's nice enough to join us,
We're going to prevent you from hearing him in that manner.
Speaker 2 (01:45:50):
As a chipmunk.
Speaker 5 (01:45:51):
Yes, I want to see what I want to see
what happens when he gets him back on the phone.
Speaker 2 (01:45:59):
If it happened again.
Speaker 6 (01:46:01):
Well, you're not gonna like you're setting it up like
if it happens again, I am gonna, well.
Speaker 2 (01:46:05):
This share into that monitor. No, that's gonna.
Speaker 6 (01:46:11):
Man, got five nice monitors in here. I'm gonna keep
them all safe and sound.
Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Do you dare go to him again?
Speaker 6 (01:46:17):
There was a technical difficulties on our end. You weren't
sounding quite correct. If you wouldn't mind. What did Joe
Spotta have to say about Bennett Susa?
Speaker 7 (01:46:26):
Yeahs I had some elbow stuff in his in his
outing on Tuesday in Detroit, and they saw it. Giving
him a couple of days off would allow it to
settle down a little bit. That did not happen. So
he's flying back to Houston right now to get further evaluation.
I play a doctor on the radio, but having elbow
(01:46:47):
pain with thirty something games left in the season, even
if it's best case scenario, I think it would be
difficult to envision Susa, you know, returning quickly. Perhaps if
it's best case scenario, they could do something where you
back for the stretch run and maybe a potential playoffs thing.
But again, they're working against the clock here, they're working
against the calendar. So just another injury for a team
(01:47:10):
that can't afford it.
Speaker 6 (01:47:11):
Two bullpen arms off the roster with he and Van
Way van Way optioned down. One bullpen arm added to
the roster. What did what did Joe have to say,
if anything, about the addition of Craig Kimbrel And what
are your thoughts about the addition of Craig Kimbrel.
Speaker 7 (01:47:26):
I mean from a from strictly a track record and
a guy that has done it before. I think it
makes a lot of sense because you look down in
that bullpen and there's not a lot of guys a
lot of service time. There's not a lot of guys
that have done this at the major league level a lot.
Even a guy that you would think, you know, Caleb
b Art's been around and been on a few teams,
He's only got a year of major league service time.
(01:47:48):
Brian King's only had a year a major league service time.
Like they needed some experience down there. What Craig kimberle
is not what he once was, but they think they
think the breaking pitches are still still playable. He's learning
how to pitch with deepriests fastball velocity, just as he's
gotten older. And I think they think he has learned
(01:48:09):
a little bit about how to pitch with ninety three
ninety four instead of the ninety six ninety seven he
once had. It's a flyer like they're hoping that they
can just kind of catch lightning in a bottle here
that he you know, kind of his half of the
guy he once was. But they got him maybe more
for his experience and just him pitching him a ton
(01:48:29):
of leverage games and getting so many meaningful outs in
his career, maybe more than the production and then the stuff.
Speaker 5 (01:48:37):
So you mentioned it's the latest injury we've got. You know,
we've had enough of those all season long. Lance mccullors
comes back tonight, that was like the largest blister. Ever,
how do you how do you characterize his latest time
on the shelf and why should anyone watching be optimistic
that he'll be able to get the job done tonight?
Speaker 7 (01:49:00):
You know, I can't characterize it because we didn't quite frankly,
we didn't seek to Lance at all the entire time
he was on the injured list. We would, to be
quite frank with you, we barely saw him, and so
without talking to him and without getting his perspective of
what was going on and how it transpired. I really can't.
I can't describe what is why he went on the
(01:49:20):
injured list, what the blister was like, just because I
had not spoken to him. But as far as tonight goes,
you know, I would expect to see him throw a
lot more curveball Site. It's something that they have been
trying to get him to do for a while now.
It's something that Joe's spot mentioned he did in his
rehab outings asked with this blister. The Orioles have a
lot of left handed hitters in their lineup. This is
(01:49:42):
a lineup that would be susceptible to the curveball. So
I would imagine you see a lot more curveballs from
Lance and Polish Site. But the curveball can only work
if he's ahead in the count, and that's going to
be throwing a sinker for strikes, throwing a slider for strikes,
getting ahead one, one, two, things like that. Because he
falls behind him as we've seen, it can be a
difficult run for him. So the key for him is
(01:50:04):
going to be getting ahead in talents and using his
curtain ball a little bit more.
Speaker 6 (01:50:07):
He leads into a trio of games being started by himself,
Christian Xavier and Spencer Araghetty, So hopefully even into a
day off, they'll manage their way through this. From a
pitching standpoint, the leadoff hitter tonight and batting and playing
left field for the Corpus Christy Hooks. Is Jordan Alvarez
his third rehab game. He's gotten five hits and his
nine plate appearances. What do you think is it a
(01:50:30):
guarantee that he's in a lineup on Tuesday? Is there
a possibility that he flies to Baltimore to play Saturday
or Sunday.
Speaker 7 (01:50:39):
I do not think he will be in Baltimore. I
think that would I think there would have to be
something drastic that changes for him to come to Baltimore.
I think they're fine with how it's going now. They
are pleased with how he has played, They're pleased with
how he's feeling what they're not looking at the results obviously,
like it's great that he's got a bunch of hits
and he's run around the bases. That's an awesome but
(01:50:59):
like they're trying to make sure that when he wakes
up in the morning his hand isn't hurting. They're looking
at the swing and missus. The couple swings and missus,
he's had the foul balls, because those are what hurts
the hand more than just you know, hitting a ball
off the sweet spot and going into the gap. So
they're they're cautiously optimistic. They like how it's going. I
would be surprised if he comes to Baltimore for anything.
(01:51:22):
I don't know what that means for him, whether he
would playing Florpos on Sunday or whether they would just
shut him down and wait until Tuesday against the Rockies.
I'm playing him against the Rockies is pretty much continuing
his rehab assignment, so you can look at it that way.
But I would expect, again, barring something barring something unforeseen,
I would not expect Alvarez to be in Baltimore, but
(01:51:44):
I would expect them to be able line up on
Tuesday against the Rockies.
Speaker 6 (01:51:47):
Did the Astros do anything differently with their approach in
last night's game? Really not relevant to who pitched. It's
not a very good pitcher who also handled them very well.
But are they did they try to do something differently
with how they approach there they're off so or did
they just get hits?
Speaker 7 (01:52:02):
I mean, I didn't really see much of a big
approach change. There were still they spun a lot early
in the counts too, but this time when they swung
early in the counts, they got big hits. It's, you know,
that's the jecko and hide of this thing. This is
an aggressive team. They swing a lot early in the count.
They can be too aggressive at times, but it's when
(01:52:23):
you're able to swing early in the count.
Speaker 8 (01:52:24):
And you get hits.
Speaker 7 (01:52:25):
But also like I'll have like you shouldn't remember, like
Brandon Young last night through I believe like seventy nine
or eighty pitches through four innings, which is a lot.
It's a lot for a starting pitcher when you tax
them for an average of twenty pitches per innings. So
in some respects they.
Speaker 8 (01:52:39):
Did their job.
Speaker 7 (01:52:40):
There was in a bat last night, Jacob Melton got
down one to two, battled back to a nine pitch walk,
which is something that is very rare for this team,
and then the lineup turned over. Karey hit the two
run single and they were off and running. So it's
those kind of at bats like, no, they don't really
need like nine to ten pitch at bats up and
down the lineup, it's more of just like my thing
(01:53:00):
with them has been, they've got to be a little
more I guess, aware of kind of what's going on
in the game. They've got to be aware of like,
you know, if Frober just had a twenty five pitch inning,
don't go swing at the first pitch the first two
hitters at the next end and give him some that
The awareness has been the thing for me that's been interesting.
But this is what they are, like cuz THEAL two
(01:53:22):
B is not going to start taking ten pitches per
at bat like Yiner Dias isn't going to start become
a patient hitter overnight. This is this is what they are.
They They tried this winner to address their aggression by
getting east Ok paratus towards hamstring, so they don't have
most patient hitter and baseball in their lineup. So that's
kind of the trickle mount effect. But no, I didn't
see anything different approach wise. I just think Brandon Young
(01:53:45):
didn't command the ball as well as he did a
couple of days ago, and he kind of pitched to
what he is.
Speaker 5 (01:53:51):
Forty three years ago. This week, the Compact disc was debuted.
Do you remember the first CD you purchased.
Speaker 7 (01:53:59):
I'm going to embarrassed myself on a major market radio
show right now, if you want to really know what
the first CD I purchased. Yes, you know Britney Spears
is from Louisiana, right, Yeah, so she was like a
big deal when I was growing up. Whatever one of
her CDs that hit Me Baby one more Time on it.
I think that was the first CD I ever purchased.
(01:54:19):
I think I was in my first grade. But yes,
I just embarrassed myself on a major market radio show.
Speaker 5 (01:54:24):
So Britney spears debut album was Chandler Rome in a
first grade. First grade Chandler Room's first CD.
Speaker 2 (01:54:32):
Yeah, I love that. I love everything about that.
Speaker 7 (01:54:35):
Are you guys impressed that I knew what a CD was?
Speaker 10 (01:54:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:54:38):
I was actually gonna ask initially if you even had
any CDs?
Speaker 2 (01:54:43):
Oh I did?
Speaker 7 (01:54:44):
Yeah, I yes, I know what a CD is. Don't
worry about this.
Speaker 5 (01:54:48):
All right, good stuff as always, both baseball and non baseball.
Speaker 7 (01:54:52):
Chandler all right, thanks guys, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:54:55):
Your source for bubblegum pop.
Speaker 6 (01:54:56):
Here on Sports Talk seven to ninety Chandler roam joining
us also from the Athletic and he writes about baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:55:02):
That makes me so happy that that was his first CD.
I love that.
Speaker 1 (01:55:06):
The on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:55:13):
All right, don't talk over this, listen to this.
Speaker 5 (01:55:16):
Apparently, hey man, listen, there was a time where she
wasn't dancing around psychotic with knives on Instagram?
Speaker 2 (01:55:24):
Or was she dancing around in this era? Well, you
don't really in a way that would suggested what she
was asking you to do would be appropriate for the
way she was dancing. You know, she can't sing. That's
the worst part of it all, very little career.
Speaker 5 (01:55:40):
This came out can't sing like right as my senior
year of high school started. And then when I figured
out we were the exact same age, you know, both
basically eighteen good times.
Speaker 2 (01:55:50):
I had a chance obviously, obviously obviously, but then look
who she ended up marrying. I'm no federal line, yeah,
but look at who in exactly you k fed? Come on,
col And wasn't he caught up? Everybody called him? That
wasn't it, you guys.
Speaker 5 (01:56:06):
Wasn't he caught up in the whole Michael Jackson accuser
thing or is that completely unrelated?
Speaker 2 (01:56:10):
He was involved? So he ruined two of my favorite
pop stars. Three things we need to get to here,
first of which your opportunity to enjoy a good concert
with people who can sing quite well, very popular Brittany
(01:56:31):
won't be there. We have tickets for you to see them.
Speaker 6 (01:56:32):
Rob Thomas is performing on the All Night Days tour
with a Great Big World. That's August thirty a Smart
