Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam, raised.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
By Earl.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Nolan, multed by the magnificent roller coaster ride that is
Houston Sports chill lage down for the only homegrown afternoon
team is Talking Your Teams? Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler
(00:32):
are the A Teams.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
A Welcome into a Wednesday edition of the show.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
It's Sports Talk seven ninety. It is the A team.
He is wex I m A. C. Cole Thompson is
our producer and I can tell you from personal experience
that sucked last night. If you're an Astros fan, or
maybe what if you're like a this scenario wex What
if you were wanting to still kind of be a
Bregman fan on the sly because of all the good
(01:06):
times he provided you here in Houston, but you know
you didn't want to like switch allegiances and you're definitely
an Astros fan. There's no confusing that, so you just
want to like maybe quietly cheer along. By the time
he hit that home run Howie Kendrick style off the
foul pole and it.
Speaker 5 (01:22):
Was seven to nothing on what would end up being a.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Fourteen to one final, where you still feeling that way,
you still have little warm and fuzzies when Alex Bregman
comes up to bat, or were you upset? Like you
should have loved it?
Speaker 5 (01:35):
Because love the passion tied with the Mariners loves love
the amount of anger derived from one of one to
sixty two. Hopefully you guys do as well as we
get started here on the A team. Astro's looking for
a series victory this evening over the Boston Red Sox. See,
you are the worst. You know that, just once. I
want you to play it up like me. If this
the NBA can't quite get there, the NFL is absolutely there.
(01:58):
Major League Baseball, we'll.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
Never get there. Panic after one game, I mean, come on, man,
well there's too many. But now I understand what you're saying.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
The Astros Sean Duban and Colton Gordon and Chas McCormick.
I cannot believe they gave up eleven runs. No way,
no way that happened.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
You know who didn't give up eleven runs? The guy
who gave up just two and looked a whole lot better.
He looked awful. He looked better than he did the
first time out. You know, hey, I said better, not great,
but we.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
Spent all this time going, Man, these umpires suck. The
plate doesn't move. Why does your strikes own move daily? Hey, Spencer,
the plate doesn't move, same place that's always been, man,
And he said as much. I'm not trying to get
down on him, because he said the same thing after
the game. He was ticked off and he should have been. Yeah,
he started four games this year. This was the second
(02:50):
time he's only given up one hit. But he walked
five batters and didn't throw up strikes, and the Astros
were down two nothing. He managed to give them the
exact same results as Christian Javier. I don't really care
how you get there in the bigger picture. The big
picture is the Astros had a chance to win both
of these last two games. Their starter gave up two
(03:10):
runs in five innings on Monday. Their starter gave up
two runs in five innings on Tuesday. They won one,
they lost one. The two starting pitchers were both obviously
still on their way back from injury. In Spencer's case,
it was his second appearance. In Hovey's case, it was
his first. All those things are great, and I know
Spencer knows he's got better stuff than dancing around the
strikes on the way he did. He just couldn't execute
(03:31):
his pitches, and he described it as much after the game,
especially to the left handed hitters, especially to Roman Anthony,
as his teammates then followed by walking him four times
in his sixth plate appearance. Is a free swinging, good eye,
but free swinging young player, and the Astros has simply
made it a little bit too easy. Eight walks issued
in the game last night, and obviously for the final
three innings of the game, they used two pitchers to
(03:53):
people who they don't want throwing pitches for them. And
I know Colton Gordon was sent down before today's game
because of the numbers game. He pitched yesterday specifically so
they wouldn't burn the rest of the people in the bullpen.
He threw fifty two pitches. He's obviously not available today.
He's probably not wouldn't even be available on Friday, after
Thursday's off day.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
So that's the reason.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
If you'd like to say why he was sent down
so they could get a fresh arm here Jordan Weims,
who is now a part of the Astros for the
second time this season. But the real reason is he
can't get major league hitters out, and I'm not sure
that they figured that out or not yet. I'm not
sure that he's going to be back later. I think
the next time they need another arm, it needs to
be somebody else. Whether that's a healthy JP France, Luis Garcia.
(04:35):
Garcia throws tonight by the way for the Sugarland Space Cowboys,
whether that's AJ blueball. But Colton Gordon's struggles continued as
he throws hittable pitches and he's pacing major league hitters,
so they are hitting them. If you're hitting over three,
if the opponent's batting average is over three hundred, when
you're on the mound, they probably can't be using you.
(04:55):
Game was probably already out of reach because unfortunately Stephen
Okert was in an enough trouble or gave up enough
hard hit baseballs on his twelve pitches to three batters
that Joe Spotta felt it necessary to take him out
with two outs in the sixth inning and bring in
Sean Duben for his first major league appearance in over
a month.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
Shine Duman absolutely crap the bed last night.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
He's on the roster and it's you know, he was healthy,
and it's time to use him. I don't bemoan using
him in yesterday's game, yeah, but I think the better
better option is to use him to start n inning.
If if there needed to be one more there, maybe
you go with somebody else. Quite honestly, I think Steven
Okert needs to finish that inning, and unfortunately it didn't
work out that way. Back to back games where the
(05:40):
Astros are sitting there with two outs and nobody on
in an inning in the back half of the game,
and they just can't get that last out and they're
getting bludgeoned a five spot and a four spot in
these sixth and seventh innings. Seventh inning on Monday, sixth
inning in yesterday's game, they were able to win despite
the inning in yesterday or two days ago. Yesterday turned
to two nothing game into a seven to nothing game,
(06:01):
And everything that happened after the seventh inning is they
doubled their seven runs to fourteen is immaterial to the result.
The Astros weren't going to put eight runs on the
board in the final four at bats of last night's game,
certainly not in any of the innings that were still
being pitched by Dustin May. His best outing of the
season clearly is best as a Red Sox, and we'll
see what happens today. Is the Astros throw Hunter Brown
(06:21):
against Walker Buehler in their both of their respective most
recent starts against the opponent they'll be facing again tonight,
Hunter Brown was great and Walker Buehler was terrible. If
that repeats itself, then the Astros will claim their third
consecutive series and will spend at least one more day
in first place in this division. They are now tied
in this division. Mariner scored a top of the first
(06:44):
inning run on a Josh Naylor RBI single yesterday against
the Orioles, and that was all she wrote. Their final
nine half innings for the Orioles ended all eight remaining
half innings for the Mariners. Nobody scored and the Mariners
got a one nothing victory. They both sport sixty seven
and fifty three records with forty two games to go.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Well, you brought up one thing that I want to
get to here, and then there was another one that
you kind of just mentioned. The first thing you brought
up was Dustin May. Much like Walker Buehler, he is
a former dominant pitcher as a Dodger, who just I
don't know why the Astros make some of these guys
look like they are world beaters when they just are
clearly not. I'm not saying Dustin May doesn't have good
(07:25):
stuff or that he hasn't had stuff in the past,
but I don't look at Dustin May or Walker Buehler
going coming into this series and think, well, this Astro's
lineup as is right now, not well, it doesn't have
yord On or no right now.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
They should absolutely be able.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
To do something as opposed to nothing, which is basically
what they it is. What they did against Stuff was
really good. Yeah, and that's what I'm saying. He has
it somewhere in there, just like Walker Buehler does. But
this season has not been It's kind of like the
opener that's not Garrett Crochet this year. I don't think
this was Dustin May last either. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
Two of the last four starts for May he has
shut out the other team. Yesterday was much more of
I think his stuff than the first time it happened
against Minnesota. Obviously they get to that's It's just a
microcosm of the lamest sports talk topic of all time.
And unfortunately I tried it out all the time. I mean,
they'd hit Garrett Crochet, they couldn't hit Dustin May.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Say it.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
Why not say the line because it's baseball freaking hate.
That's so stupid, but it is absolutely what happens now.
I don't I don't put Dustin May and Walker Buehler
in the same category anymore. Walker Buller is just not
good anymore. He's justin Verlin.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
He can't.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
If they swing at every single first pitch and hit
into an out on every single first pitch, maybe a
guy's done after five innings, pretty much guaranteed, and probably
before that. He just doesn't have very good stuff. He
doesn't have swing and miss stuff. Not since the World
Series of last year has he really been able to
go out there and do it. So it is an
opportunity for the Astros to take care of another series
(08:58):
and just flush a game. The other thing they've they've
done a very good job of that. They've not been
able to string a lot of wins together. Three four
five in a row, win ten out of thirteen. They
did all that to get to first place. They've kind
of been hovering around five hundred for the better part
of the last three four weeks now, and obviously that
means if another team is playing well, and that is
the Mariners, they're going to catch you. And that's exactly
(09:20):
what's happened.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Or in the case of since the trade was made,
they are below five hundred by a game.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
But still you're right, and you brought that up.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I think it was last week where you're talking about
like they were the best team in baseball in June
going into the first handful of games in July, and
on either side of that, they've been a five hundred
baseball team and that's been good enough to get you
ahead of the Mariners for this long. But the Mariners,
like you just said, refuse to lose. Right now, they're
playing their best baseball of the season. And that brings
(09:48):
me to the second point I wanted to make, which
is that, yeah, it is baseball, and this does happen.
It is one game, but it's when it's happening right now,
at the junction of the schedule in which it's happening.
While the the team that you're trying to stave off
is not having this kind of thing happening. They've got
they're clicking on all cylinders right now and that's fine.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
Like if you think the Astros we were walking out last.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
Night, I went. I went to the game with my
buddy David, and we're walking to the truck and we
had gotten to the lot, so there's still a ways
to go. I know exactly where we were. When he
mentioned this, he goes, I hate to say this, by
the way, it hurts me, hurts my soul. I want
you to know that, he goes, well, Wax is right,
Mariners are just better right now? Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
And then I punched him in the face and I
left him in a lot and drove home. No genius.
I think a lot of people would agree that you
could make an argument the Mariner's are the best team
in the American League, let alone better than the Astros.
I think the Blue Jays would have something to say
about that. But they because they have continued to play
pretty good baseball. But they're clearly the next they're playing
the next best baseball, and they're they're just they're put
together very well. They are clicking on all cylinders, as
(10:50):
their starting rotation is now fully healthy with Miller, and
their closer is not hurt and hasn't been hurt all year,
and he's been great. And two of the players that
they've added have both been great since they arrived at
least as good as the player. Two of the players
you've added, and one of those players before we hit
the break here. It happens pretty much all year, and
(11:10):
for those that need to catch up. When the Astros
have an off day, they like to use the off
day and package it in a deal with the day
before the off day. The day before the off day
is today, and in order to package those two together
and get a player two days off, you got to
give the player the day off today. They've been doing
it all year. They've been doing it for more than
one year. They clearly have data they believe in that
(11:34):
makes a player even stronger for the games that will
follow if you give him two days off. So the
league games gives you one day off tomorrow, and the
Astros have decided to give Carlos Carea the day off today, well,
he will have it two days off. He got his
first innings off last night late in the game with
the score being lopsided. Not in the lineup today to
face Fait Walker Bueller again. Jeremy Panea wasn't in the
(11:57):
lineup the other day in advance of a day off.
Ended up pinch hitting late in that game, and I'm
sure Correa will be up for that if necessary. Paynya
Sanchez Altuve Walker, and Altuve needs his glove today for
the first time in a while, He'll be playing second base,
Krottini and Diaz. Diz will not need his glove. Diaz
will Uryus Smith. And back in center field is Jacob Melton,
(12:21):
Jake em if you will, Jacob Melton.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Everybody field. Jake Myers is back now.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
Jake m will be playing manning center field, bat's left
and catches left. Not like the other Jake M who
is currently rehabbing, going through a progression of running progression,
hitting progression, throwing progress, whatever the progressions he needs to
make his way back. A big day for the Texans
finally arrives tomorrow, the most important day of their training camp,
(12:49):
when the Panthers will be in town for a joint practice.
Talk a little bit about that. For more Rockets dates,
we only have seventy six more to go, and we'll
find out about those tomorrow. But we have four more
Rockets games announced earlier today. I want to share those
with you and obviously welcome your input throughout the day
on the program via social media at Adam J. Wexler,
(13:09):
at Adam Plant, at mister Cole Thompson, or of course
right here on the phone lines at seven one three
two one two five seven ninety will keep you up
to date on the afternoon baseball. It is a race.
It's a dead heat the Mariners and the Astros. Who
plays better over the final forty two We'll discuss.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Next the eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 6 (13:35):
World. Indeed, no work, it's work nine fun.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
So last night, Oh by the way, real quick, I
just wanted to tell everybody out there, I'm trying something new.
And this goes for you two x before we get
to what I wanted to talk about. I'm gonna work
on being less condescending from here on out. Condescending means
talking down to people.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
Just in general, not just between two and six.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
That's the joke. Come on, man, you didn't get the joke.
I absolutely did not get the joke. I'm gonna work
on being less condescending. That that means talking, not talking,
you know, down to people as much. I'm explaining it
in a condescending way.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
You are.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
I couldn't tell.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
Well, wex couldn't. Still I still can't tell. Like it's
you're making sure people understand what you're saying. Oh my gosh,
I'm pausing. I'm taking a sip of coffee and I'm
moving on.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
All right. So last night went to the game buddy
of mine that we we actually had planned on taking
our wives to this game before the season began.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
It was Bregman's homecoming.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
We wanted to go to the Monday game, but doing
her like that's gonna be crazy, and it looks like
it was on TV because I didn't go on Monday night.
Astros get the wins, all right, right, we'll go to
Wednesday's game. And then and because of work and the
early start time tonight because it's a six o'clock start.
In case you guys don't know, we're like, all right,
we'll call, we'll pull an audible, we'll go to the
Tuesday game. Got the tickets, ended up selling half of
(15:11):
them because Teresa is like, I can't go this whole thing.
So we go and it ends up being a guys. Now,
I don't do that like ever. I think maybe once
a year I went with our Boys Scott in the
opening series against the Mets this year. That's the only
other game I've attended this year as a fan or otherwise.
And so we're there, it's, you know, Riic Getty's coming
(15:33):
back to do his home debut, and we're happy the
Red Sox are in town. It's cool, stadium's packed again,
and we finally get to our seats and it's you
know what, we see what unfolded, and then Bregman comes
up and he hits that two run bomb and we've
all seen it by now. We already know what it
was and what it did to the game at that point,
(15:55):
but the fact that it hit that foul poll. We
were sitting in section one thirty three. If you're not
familiar with Dyke and Park, that's not right up against
that foul pole, but it's on the first base side
and it's probably two sections over from the foul pole.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
In other words, when he hit the foul pole.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
And you knew it was a home run, it landed,
we were probably like five rows up from the field,
landed right in front of us in the grass, and
I said to him, I said, we're leaving right, We
are leaving like we're not.
Speaker 5 (16:25):
It was seven nothing at that point.
Speaker 4 (16:28):
Nothing was going right, and even though Arrigetty had kind
of I guess, escaped huge damage, the bullpen was like
leaky and I just you just got this feeling. And
this goes to what we talked about in the first segment.
I was messaging with someone earlier today whose opinion I
respect about the team, and they said the following, and
(16:51):
I'm paraphrasing, it just feels like with Hater's injury, that
might be it. And what they meant was the bullpen cannot.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
It's it's not.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
It doesn't have the ability, even with a bray You
to kind of slip in there, like if I don't
know how long Haters is gonna haters gonna be out.
But let's just say for the sake of argument, the
majority of the rest of the regular season, you've essentially
put Brian a bray You in the closers role and
more often than not, and the bullpen is what it
is moving forward. It just feels like it's too much
(17:26):
to overcome in this person's opinion. Now, I know you guys,
Scott done saying it's baseball and all that, but I
think all of that coupled with the way Seattle is
really seemingly gelling right now, Like even I'm acknowledging it,
even though I don't think their pretenders until they're not,
(17:47):
because they always do this. I mean, think about it
so seriously from an organizational standpoint, They had a lot
going for them in twenty two coming up against the
Astros in in that first round, and they led all
of game one. It took them raculous walk off from
Jordan to basically flip the script of that entire series.
Like they were shell shocked. They looked like they were
shell shocked. And then they had a Titanic you know,
(18:10):
headweight fight in game three, which was really two games
and one and the Astros one like the like the
Mariners did against the Oils last night. They got one run,
so it's not like they dominated in that clinching game.
What I'm saying is sometimes it feels like a team's
getting hot, and if that team is the team is
trying to overtake you in the standings right now, the
(18:33):
best case scenario is that they're peaking too early, because
they really look like everything is clicking right now. Remember
it was they always had the pitching but now this lineup,
and again you said it yesterday, We've talked about it.
Auanio Sorez has done next to nothing for them, so
they're presumably going to get better in all likelihood.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
Yeah, they are, according to at least one outlet, the
favorites in the American League, something I touched on in
the opening seventy, the favorites in the American League, not
in this division, in this league to win the league.
They are the best team in the league and definitely
a case for it. And what I say, and I've
said it several times now, probably since last year's deadline,
I just don't view them as the same because they're
(19:12):
not doing things the same. If they were doing things
the same, then they would have tried the same team
out there in July that they are in August. But
they aren't. They made three significant moves. They bolstered their bullpen,
and they added two bats to their lineup. Both of
them were having great seasons before they got there. Josh
Naylor is not a great player in most people's eyes,
(19:33):
but his offensive numbers certainly are. And you've got an
eight hundred ops player that you add to the lineup,
but he's been even better than that. Since you add him,
you added.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
A great player.
Speaker 5 (19:40):
And obviously Suarez hasn't done anything for them. I'm sure
he will at some point. They're better. And you couple
that with last year's deadline when they made one move,
but I thought a fairly significant one and a very
Unmriners like move when they went out and trained for
Randy Rose Arena. Well, three of the top six in
their lineup were not Mariners in July of twenty twenty four.
Still there, this is a guy, right, is a big,
(20:03):
big difference in their team. I mean, the Astros hoped
to add three players technically four to their top six
at the deadline, and they added two. They added Jeremy
Pania back from injury, and they added Carlos Korea. I mean,
in reality, they added Hayesu Sanchez. But the reality of
the addition of Hazu Sanchez is, while he does have
(20:24):
five doubles since he's been acquired, he's hitting two twenty
and his ops is close to Chas mccormicks, it's in
the low six hundreds. His value to the Astros has
been very limited at best, and Eureus has been very good,
but he was brought on to fill the gaps, which
is exactly what he's done, more like Caleb Ferguson for
the Mariners and their bullpen, just kind of filling in
the gaps. Correa's clearly been very, very good the last
(20:47):
two games, a little to show for it, but enough
that he's made a huge impact while they've gone five
and six. That's to me on the Mariner side, just
in and of itself, that's what's different. Their pitching is there,
and the timing of their injury, well, George Kirby's healthy now,
he was hurt at the beginning of the season. Well,
the Astros are kind of hoping and praying that somebody
comes back and can do what he's done for them,
(21:09):
and not for nearly as much time. And the pitchers
we're talking about weren't out for a couple of months
to start the year. And he'll be back in May
or he'll be back in June. These are guys that
have been out for four months, eight months, twelve months,
twenty four months. Just a dramatic difference. And the player
we're talking about on their side is George Kirby. He's
an All Star. Your players are talking about for the
(21:30):
Astros are starters. At best best case scenario, I could
categorize them as a starting pitcher. They're not at full strength,
we don't know when they will be, and they are
playing like it. The Mariners are very close to full strength,
and they're a very good team. Their roster is very good,
their lineup every day is very good, their rotation and
bullpen is very good. The record is matching what their
(21:50):
roster is. So I don't see them really, you know,
taking a back seat the next forty some odd games
and all of a sudden not playing great. They're not
gonna win every game, they're not gonna have a one month,
which they currently do, but they're going to shoot past
probably everybody, if not everybody, everybody but the Blue Jays
and the Astros have to man try to figure out
(22:11):
what they've been doing to piece it together the same way.
Problem is the big problem. Because of what you talked
about with Hater, it's different. You hope to get to
the ninth inning with the lead now because you're not
gonna be using a Brad to help you get there,
and now you're hoping he can succeed at an all
star level. You're replacing an All Star closer and is
(22:31):
an All Star caliber season this season.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Not the guy whose reputation was as an All Star
before he got here prior to last year like he is.
Is for whatever you thought was shortcoming last season, because
it was it wasn't him. Wasn't the hater that we
all expected. He's absolutely every bit of that this year.
So this absolutely sucks.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
Yep, you're it'd be nice to not They're probably gonna
have a lot of close games because that's just what
they are. It's going to be very tough to win
them at the clip they've been winning in the mat.
Speaker 4 (22:59):
So this year. I think if we had better, a
better idea on jr. Don Alvarez, I wouldn't be as
pessimistic as I as I am right now in August thirteenth.
Speaker 5 (23:11):
But that can change. You know why say it? Say
the line?
Speaker 7 (23:15):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (23:15):
Because it's baseball, thank you.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
That's why. All right, when we come back, we will
do what we always do at two thirty every single
weekday when we are on the air, it's the best
of X next.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
Did you all see this?
Speaker 2 (23:33):
We should be putting out between five and fifteen posts a.
Speaker 5 (23:36):
Day, four hundred people were arrested for things that they
said on social media. History repeats itself type bang, you'll succeed,
Never doubt that you're the one too, perfer no one.
You'll believe you're the best of X. Nothing's gonna ever
top you know, yore the best of X posting every
(23:58):
single day, you know, the best of it breaking the
entire Internet. Alright, it is time.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
To visit the mean streets of social media like we
do each and every day. We call this the best
of X. It doesn't always come from X, the artist
formerly known as Twitter. Sometimes it comes from Instagram. Sometimes
it comes from I don't think we've ever done a
Facebook post that I saw and I was like, you know,
kind of.
Speaker 5 (24:29):
Surprising considering the comments. There can be something sometimes savage,
they can be something.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
Do you think. By the way, since I just said
that word, it made me think of this has Aaron
Boone's rant about his guys being savages in the box aged?
What's aged more like milk than that in the recent
years of sports rants.
Speaker 5 (24:50):
I mean, savages suggests excellence and there's that's not associated
with the Yankees, So it's pretty bad.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
Like Gardner was still on the team when he said that. Right,
it's been a minute, I think, so all they've done
is well they have gone to the World Series since then,
so maybe I should.
Speaker 5 (25:04):
But yeah, they have been there.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
That's true. What happened. It did not win good.
Speaker 5 (25:07):
It came in second of the two teams. What do
you think about when you hear the name Rowdy toe Les?
Speaker 4 (25:13):
Uh, big, there you go.
Speaker 5 (25:15):
Slow, left handed, swinging journey man major League Baseball first base.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
What were the first two words you said? Big? I'm
sure was one of them, and then the second one.
I didn't say it, but I meant Burley. Well you
said slow though, Oh yeah he's slow, run big and slow.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
Yeah he spread seed was low big hit stack cast
to double check on that, but I believe it's slow.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
Now are you? You're all about sports nicknames? Some of
the all time greats have been clot like, you know,
the Big Unit's awesome, splendid splinter. Yeah. I mean to say, hey,
kid Hammer and Hank Hammer and Hank some good ones
and these are all baseball. The Ryan Express, the easy
money Sniper plays right here in Houston. More on him later, Yes,
but Rowdy to Les is not particularly fond of a
(26:00):
certain nickname he was given based on the physical description
you just provided us.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
So you're basically calling him this. Well, first of all,
you're asking us to have a discussion about rowdy.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
His name is rowdy.
Speaker 5 (26:15):
You know everybody knows his name is not rowdy. Of course,
his name isn't rowdy. His parents didn't say, oh, hey,
let's go with rowdy. Some people do, though, but they didn't.
Roddy Piper's name wasn't rowdy. Your name is Ryan, well,
Ryan John Telez, who has a nickname already. For those
just now catching up, it's rowdy. We already call him
(26:36):
by his nickname regularly and only and exclusively. He has
a nickname, it's rowdy.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
Well, now he has two. He doesn't like it. He
doesn't And if you don't believe me, this was on
Foul Territory TV. Part of this panel includes a J. Perzinski.
I only say that because the back and forth between
the two of these is what I really wanted to
get to. They clearly are friendly and like each other
and also like busting each other's you know what. As
(27:06):
you will be able to hear here.
Speaker 8 (27:08):
I did a radio show when I first got here
and they told me basically told me I was fat.
And they were like, hey, you know, if you could
eat anything here, what would it be? And I was like, oh,
I don't know whatever and they were like, yeah, have
you ever had food here? And I was like yeah,
believe it or not, I have. I live here and
they were like, oh, so you've eat and I was
(27:28):
like yeah. Then they called me the girthquake ers I'm stupid.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
And did you, Rody, did you feel like they took
it too far there when they were on with you?
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Like?
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Was it no meaning? But what was the deal? They
tried to be funny and they're not. They're just not funny.
Speaker 8 (27:43):
So I just I went full just a motionless person
and was like, hey guys, this is stuff is pretty stupid.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
So we'll just fully about that.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Yep, full shock jack stuff.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
That's why, Yeah, we leave it to AJ for the
comedy series stuff.
Speaker 9 (27:57):
Yeah, hold on, no, I can say that because the
first thing Rowdy said to me was first of all,
he goes, why are you here? And then I said
well Fox, and he's like you're still on TV? And
I said yes, aoud question and then his next then
his last question was wow, you put on like twenty
to thirty pounds, So.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
No, I haven't.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
So I have eyes.
Speaker 4 (28:17):
Yeah, I mean I'm not Ray Charles out here. I
can see.
Speaker 1 (28:20):
So I was, you know, it was it was in gearing.
Speaker 4 (28:22):
I was like, hey, aj I miss you.
Speaker 10 (28:24):
You're fat.
Speaker 8 (28:24):
Give me a hug.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Nice watch?
Speaker 4 (28:26):
Hey tell him, I said, nice watch. I gave him
a compliment.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
You did you just But it was also I do
like the girthquake. That's a nice nickname, the girth.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
Yeah, you would have came up with it. Maybe it
was cool.
Speaker 8 (28:37):
But some dude that got cut from the key ball
team because he hit the team, that's not cool.
Speaker 4 (28:41):
But I also have enough.
Speaker 9 (28:43):
I also have enough coup not to call somebody that
I barely know. I wouldn't walk up to someone. I hey, dude,
look at a fat you walk.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
Yeah I'm not.
Speaker 8 (28:52):
I'm not going to go up to somebody that's three
times bigger than me like hey dude, you're fat. Nice earthquake,
whatever it is, and move on like yeah, it's cool.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
So Rowdy till Z does this interview with our radio station,
I think is where it was, and you know, he
just he was available after the Brewers released him.
Speaker 5 (29:09):
And the Rangers picked him up and he's it's actually done.
He's done some good things for them. So there's an
interview with a radio station in Dallas not long after.
Speaker 4 (29:17):
He's easily the most likable Ranger that's not named philm
Ayton right.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
As a rowdy just described. Oh after that, I just
went full on emotionless radio interview. Oh so you went
film Mayton?
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (29:32):
Yeah, but like, are you okay? We had this conversation
yesterday when we were talking about guys that you hate
when they play and then they get a TV role
and you like them now.
Speaker 5 (29:43):
I don't know if this. I can't speak for you
on this.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
I don't know how what your feelings are about Aj Perzenski,
but we've had him on the show, and I think
we all know who helped facilitate that happening, our good
buddy Jeff Blum, who was teammates with him in Chicago.
Speaker 5 (29:57):
AJ Persenski's awesome on TV.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
I think he is. I mean a lot of people
got all bent out of shape when the Astros played
the White Sox in twenty one on the postseason because
they thought he.
Speaker 5 (30:05):
Was like bagging on them from a TV standpoint. Just
he's great about if you're not. If you're watching him,
you're probably watching him do an Astros game because that's
why you're watching, because you're watching Fox or whatever. What
if he was doing a game that didn't involve the
Astros or are the White Sox, and I think you
might have a better feeling for him, because I agree.
I think he's very good on TV. I think watching
him on TV when he's doing an Astros game just
(30:25):
gives you the typical vibe. And I totally understand that.
I completely get that. And as a player like I'm
not like AC, but if asked, I could absolutely put
together at all I hate these baseball player team and
he would be the ES. Sure, there's no question about it.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
I don't I don't like.
Speaker 5 (30:41):
I get the game of baseball is absolutely about, well,
these four idiots out here, we'll call him Blue. If
we can trick him by all means, let's try. Most
catchers try to trick him by framing pitches. He tried
to trick them on his joint down to first. That
was one of the most ridiculous plays ever. And it
didn't happen in spring training, and it didn't happen in
(31:03):
a run of the middle regular season game. It didn't
happen in an exhibition game. Happened on the biggest, one
of the biggest stages. And it's just the I don't
what am I gonna do?
Speaker 4 (31:11):
Blame him.
Speaker 5 (31:11):
These idiots didn't know what they were doing, and so
they let him get.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Away with it.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
And just to be clear, on Tealez, i'd said he's
been with the Brewers, Pirates, Mariners earlier this year, ye,
and now with the Rangers.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
Always stands the astros with the Mariners, as I recall
he did, he was a big part of why.
Speaker 5 (31:26):
This wey has thirteen homers this year. Despite one team
saying we don't need you anymore. They now have Josh Naylor,
they were correct. And the other team, who has had
major offensive issues all year, he's got a seven eighty
three ops in his first seventeen games with the Rangers.
But to that commentary, isn't he likable? He's a likable guy,
And there's you know, I we we're on a radio show.
(31:46):
We are like those people who interviewed him.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
In a way.
Speaker 5 (31:49):
We are these people, we hold the same gig. Now
we're not like them in another way. And while we
do try to be funny. That's very clear. Not always funny.
There's plenty of people who think we're never funny. Definitely
Mike Case who cares about those people people who do
think were funny. And when you're introducing a new guest.
And there are times this year specifically and maybe earlier
today when Caleb Ort was on with The Matt Thomas
(32:11):
Show with Ross, we we interviewed players from the Astros
who are very new to the team. Sometimes pretty good chance.
We haven't very interviews. We haven't met them. Yeah, we
don't know them. We don't have a rapport, we don't
have a relationship with them at all.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
And it SUSA is one of those.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
If this were us in that situation, I can tell
you for sure I would not have taken that route.
How about this, I don't think I would have taken
that route in my fourteenth interview with Rowdy Teles let alone.
Speaker 4 (32:35):
My first Well, yeah, like I might have done it
with Jacob Berger, but that's different.
Speaker 5 (32:40):
I wouldn't do it with any player. I don't know
at all about Jenna, I don't know him. Hey, fat
guy that wears pearls, you suck. Welcome to the show.
That's how I would introduce him. That's wrong with that,
So I get it from his standpoint. He reacted very correctly.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
I hate the because I like him. So that's two
guys that I like that play for a team I hate.
Speaker 5 (33:02):
It's a problem. It's a big problem for me.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
Come on radio, guys, get it together. That would be
like the other day we had Nick Cassario wan and
I said, hey, what's up cyborg something like that.
Speaker 5 (33:13):
Yes, absolutely, you know, it's funny thought you're a couple
of years ago when you were new to town, did
you stop by the auto parts shop to get some
oil to oil up the joints? I mean you're a
cyborg right, terminator style?
Speaker 4 (33:24):
Is that what you do?
Speaker 5 (33:25):
How long have you been made from liquid metals? That?
Speaker 4 (33:28):
The interview, Well, it's just funny because it was. I
thought it was a good interview. And I'm not saying
that just because we conducted it.
Speaker 5 (33:34):
But like he said, I can confirm being in practice
the last two days positive reviews from not him. I
haven't spoken to him in but other people who have
heard the interviews, Oh okay, they're like, wow, Clanton was
like civil and everything. Is that what they said?
Speaker 4 (33:48):
They did not say that, not even a little bit,
not even hint today. But it was funny because I
was re listening to a snippet of it earlier today.
And he is still very methodical, very mechanical in his answers.
It's just who he is, general manager, thoughtful with his words.
Speaker 5 (34:03):
Comments come on.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
Smith before and it was a completely different tone of interview.
Both I thought were very positive and I said my
share of things about him that I've never said about
Nick Assario. I only have one critique of Nick Cassio.
Fix that line, man. He knows that though I conveyed
it appropriately, can share.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
Some items about that particular line that went through a
walk through the day inside the stadium before Saturday's game
against the Panthers, before tomorrow's joint practice against the Panthers.
So no girthquakes on the Texans roster that I'm aware of.
But we'll talk Texans.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
When we come back.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
On Sports Talk seven ninety Oh yeah, I forget.
Speaker 6 (35:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
Last night it was Superman Night at Dyk and Park.
Shout out to Tom Jennings, by the way, Love Tom,
Love that guy. Great guy, Tom freaking Jennings. I hope
he's watching right now. Actually, I hope he's listening because
we're not on TV yet. Let me give myself a
tongue for screwing that up. I hope Tom Jennings is
listening right now so I can say thank you for
(35:22):
the gear. Tom Jennings is in charge of retail at
the Astros team shops. If you will, absolutely one of
the coolest jobs in America. I would if I quit
this job today or got fired, I would absolutely love
to be in charge of designing what gear came out
(35:43):
every single year for any team Baseball, basketball, football. Now
I think maybe something like I think baseball you get
a little bit more leeway. I think baseball and basketball.
I don't know all three sports. You can be super creative, obviously,
but I just feel like there's a lot more options
for whatever reason, with baseball, there's so many more games,
so there's so many more chances to, you know, outfit
(36:06):
the fans with whatever you want to put out in
the team shop, the center field. And yes, I'm absolutely
gassing up the Astros right now because they've done it
right and I like some of the people that I like,
the people that work for them in this department, and
Marcel's another one of them, the center field team shop,
which once upon a time was what was it before
right now not a team shop. Yeah, but remember back
(36:29):
in the day, it was like Ruggles was upstairs in
that part of the stadium. That's where I met Jim
Roll the first time. By the way, I.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
Believe they had a bagwell bigio grill out there as well,
like the ninth was five to seven grill maybe right.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
We you know the alternate seats for the World Series
that are on the moon. That's why I call it
because you're seeing where we sit, Yeah, where the flag
poles are. We're we're like parallel with the flags because
we're sitting right next to them for the World Series. Great,
we're in center field, Yeah, are in the building, it's okay,
the little area that we would eat in before the game. Yeah,
(37:04):
people know what I'm talking about if they've been up
like where l Tempo is up there, there's a glassed
in room that I believe is where the Ruggles used
to be.
Speaker 5 (37:13):
Correct in that general area, I've knocked down walls clearly.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
Now there's like a really cool memorabilia spot out there too,
at that ups it's right at the top of the
escalator if you guys don't know what I'm talking about.
So that's center Field Store, because you already had Union Station,
which was awesome, and the home Plate store is great,
and then there's a little side one on the first baseline.
They've done a great job. But the center Fields Shop
alt standing outstanding, so much stuff in there. You know
(37:40):
how I know my kid who does not give two
you know what's about baseball yet, and I'm not forcing it.
He's just this is not his thing. He even loves
going in there. He loves the fact that there's not
a game going on most times when we go in
there because he does not like the cannon and he
doesn't like going to gains because of that. But I'm
hoping for getting over that mental hurdle soon. Yeah, the
Urfield Shop and Tom and everybody that's made it what
(38:03):
it is. Shout out to them. And you can get
this shirt there by the way that nobody can see
right now because we're on our TV yet. Awesome, But
if you're listening and you want to see it, I
would highly go anywhere man stick around. Highly suggest you
tune in to the simulcast on Space City Home Network
beginning next segment. All right, tell me how it was
(38:23):
being in the air conditioning today. When we come back,
obviously with the Houston Texans walk through variety, you already
told me somebody you ran into. Maybe you'll reveal that,
maybe you won't. I don't know. We'll see, but we'll
get a taste of what was happening over at NRG
as the Texans prepare for preseason game number two coming
(38:43):
up this weekend inside that very stadium. We'll do all
of that and more when we come back, and we'll
begin the simulcast on a Wednesday edition of the eighteen.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named at him talking your team,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler par the A Team.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
It is the A Team.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
It's Sports Talk seven ninety it is Space City Home Network.
Simulcast has now begun, so you can see the T
shirt we were talking about last segment. Shout out to
Tom Jennings and the rest of the astros for having
awesome gear. Basically, there's no easier way to put it.
As we are often running on a Wednesday edition of
the program, Hey, fourteen to one's not fun. Fourteen to
(39:39):
one because the bullpen was leaky. On a day you
find out Josh Hater is going on the il for
an undetermined amount of time is even less fun. And
having Alex Bregman come into town and hit another home
run is also not fun.
Speaker 5 (39:55):
But that's what happened.
Speaker 4 (39:57):
All of that happened to the Astros on Tuesday, So
hopefully there's nowhere to go but up on a Wednesday
that you started competition tied with the Mariners, who got
one measly run last night. I'll never forget looking out
at the manual scoreboard as I was sitting at the
game and thinking, really they won won nothing. At that point,
(40:17):
the Astros were only down five nothing. It got much
worse from there.
Speaker 5 (40:20):
Yeah, a game where you had to go to your
position players to pitch. And I know it's fun for
some people, and I know when you're working the game,
you know you need something to break the moment and
I can't get that. From a broadcasting standpoint, it is
helpful to your pitching staff. It is a smart thing
to do. I don't want to burn another arm because
(40:41):
I have a game tomorrow. I don't want to use
another pitcher here I've got three more games this week
without a day off. It makes perfect sense. Nothing else
about position players pitching is good.
Speaker 4 (40:52):
It's all bad.
Speaker 5 (40:53):
Means you're embarrassed, means you had nothing there that day,
means you got smoked. Clearly, they do allow winning teams
to use position players, though they rarely do chas McCormick.
I will give him credit for one thing. He is
the fastest pitcher major League Baseball we'll ever see. I
(41:13):
don't mean velocity. I mean the ball is caught by
his catcher, and almost before McCormick has re caught it
on the throwback, he's ready to go. He catches it
on the rubber. He stayed in the wind up the
entire game, even with runners on base. And yes, he
gave up runners, plenty of them, as there is now
eighteen worst on the team. But he just immediate. The
(41:36):
hitters had to react to it, you know, you could
sense that they weren't ready for this. Nobody pitches this quickly.
The pitch clock was at thirteen if it was even reset.
He was pitching so quickly. He gave up a few hits,
a few runs. The game was long since over Sean
Dubin made his first appearance since he was activated, and
he was not sharp, and unfortunately, in a situation with
(41:56):
a runner on base and two outs, it felt like
to Joe a spot, a place where they could you'll
get a little bit from him and then just move along.
They got a little bit from him, and that was
helping the Red Sox turn a two nothing game into
a seven to nothing game.
Speaker 4 (42:09):
That run scored so did for others.
Speaker 5 (42:11):
Colton Gordon came in and the hope was he would
be able to finish the game because he was going
to be sent down the next day. They didn't know
what day he was going to pitch. Well, whatever day
it was, he was probably gonna be sent down the
next day because he'd be unavailable. Well that was yesterday,
and he was terrible again. His numbers now show that
if you stand in the batter's box against him and
plan to use your bat, you're gonna hit three fourteen
(42:32):
against him.
Speaker 4 (42:33):
Everybody.
Speaker 5 (42:34):
That is the average, the average base or excuse the
batting average against Colton Gordon this year as an astro
is three fourteen. Everybody who steps in there, on average,
thirty one point four percent of the time they're going
to get a hit off of him, and that is unattenable.
You can't use pitchers whose numbers are that and I
(42:54):
don't know that he will pitch again for the Astros
this season. Because of that, he was sent down today.
Another bullpen arm was brought up, Jordan Weams, and hopefully,
like Sazar Salazar earlier this year, Chas McCormick won't have
to pitch again for the Astros. They also didn't get
anything done offensively, and that's part of the story. The
additions made to try to help the offense, along with
(43:16):
the return of Jeremy Pania. It's been clearly a little
bit better, but they've only really gotten a good offensive
push from Correa. Sanchez is definitely cooled quite considerably after
a bunch of extra base hits. He's in the lineup today.
Correa is not Arius is back in the lineup today
Homeward earlier in this series, and you also have Hunter
Brown on the mound. I didn't like putting this on
(43:36):
the graphic today, but in that it was factual, I felt.
Speaker 4 (43:39):
It was pertinent.
Speaker 5 (43:41):
Hunter Brown will be looking for his first win in
his last seven starts, including today's last six starts for
Hunter Brown, He's winless first twelve starts of the season
for Hunter Brown. He personally won eight times, the team
won nine times. It went nine to three. In his
first twelve arts, he was eight and three on the
(44:02):
first of June. He'll take them ount tonight with nine wins.
He has won personally earned the win one time in
his last ten starts eleven starts.
Speaker 4 (44:13):
Excuse me, that's so depressing.
Speaker 5 (44:15):
He has not pitched quite as well over a good
chunk of that, but he certainly pitched well enough to
win a bunch of those games, and the Astros have
obviously won a bunch of those games that a five
game a win streak during those starts. He just didn't
happen to pick up any but one of those wins.
So it's not all about that pitcher, but it is
a little bit of a behind the story to where
he is at this point in the season. As Era
bumped into the mid twos five starts ago, and that's
(44:37):
where it's remained for five starts, some good, some bad,
not nearly as strong as they were at the beginning
of the year. And the worst part about that for
this team where they are right now is he's also
not pitching deep into games. He pitched seven strong innings
against Boston to kick off that nine game road trip.
That's the only time he's gone seven innings in his
last seven starts. They need more of that, and this
(45:00):
point in the season that's asking even more than at
the earlier in the point of the season. I don't
think it's an accident. I don't think it's a coincidence
that just take his last five starts five innings, four innings,
five innings, five and a third. He wasn't doing that
at any other point this season. Well, this is the
end of the season, this is late in the season,
this is one hundred and twenty games, end of the season.
I don't know if it's coincidence. It certainly doesn't seem
(45:21):
like it. But any given day, and hopefully tonight will
be that night where he really gets what they need
from him. And considering he just did it against this
very same team, it's either super challenging to face the
same team twice, or it's a team that maybe you like,
you have their number, and hopefully that ladder is more
of what is in store for the people who are
at the park, the people who are watching the game,
tonight are obviously those listening to the game here on
(45:44):
the Sports Talk seven ninety Mariners were winners yesterday. They
still have one loss all month. They play a little
bit earlier, the bunch of afternoon games, and the Astros
unfortunately probably have to and their fans consider scoreboard watching
for the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Guardians
and the Rangers and maybe the Royals, because the second
(46:07):
you fall out of first place, you're in the wildcard race,
and the wildcard race is pretty tightly packed. The two
teams playing tonight at Dyke and Park have sixty seven
wins Houston and sixty six wins Boston, sixty four for
the Yankee, sixty two for the Guardian, sixty one for
the Rangers. I'd like to make the playoffs. I'd think
I think that'd be fun for us to carry a
(46:27):
few extra games, so the division would be great. I
am saying here again today, same thing as I've said
for three months. The Astros are going to win the division.
But I'm also speaking in mathematical facts. It's going to
be a chore to make sure you make the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (46:43):
Period. Would have been nice if you hadn't lost four
of the six games you played against the Red Sox already.
Speaker 5 (46:48):
Yeah, tie breaker is in the hands of the Red Sox.
The Astros have a chance to claim the tiebreaker over
the Yankees when they see them for the final three
games of that season series back here at Dykin Park.
They won two of three. Quite obvious. They fared incredibly
well against the best teams in baseball, the division winning teams.
But now it's more about how do they measure up
against the teams they might in fact be in a
(47:09):
tiebreaker situation with Mariners are another one. You could be
in a tiebreaker for you're the number two seed because
you won the division, or you lost the tiebreaker. Now
you're the sixth seed because you're a wild card team.
Astros need to do everything they can to not even
make that series at the end of the year. Have
those kinds of stakes, it'd be nice, but you also
have it. It's in your hands. This is the team
(47:30):
you need to beat and you're playing them. Yeah, and
it's what's you know.
Speaker 4 (47:33):
It is in an interesting quirk of the schedule that
we talked a little bit about yesterday, and that the
Mariners are currently playing a crappy Orioles team that the
Astros will then play after they're done with them twice
in their next three series. Right, And isn't there an
Oakland series coming up on the horizon? Or am I
mistaken on that.
Speaker 5 (47:51):
In between the Baltimore's is who are they playing? Who
are they playing? In between Baltimore? I just guess the Athletics,
you can. I don't want not correct. I know they're
playing aj Hinches team.
Speaker 4 (48:03):
Oh good, they're terrible. Yeah, fe good.
Speaker 5 (48:07):
Four more games on this homestand which includes those three
games against Baltimore and then seven games on the road,
a three game set with Detroit and then the final
four games of their seven game season series with the Orioles,
then back home for the incredibly talented Colorado Rockies outfit.
Speaker 4 (48:22):
You gotta sweep that. You do have to sweep that.
Speaker 5 (48:24):
It's part of the ten game homestand you didn't sweep
the White Sox again, the White Sox are even though
the White Sox are bad, significantly better, significantly better, not
record settingly bad like the Colorado Rockies or like the
White Sox last year. Yeah, you want to know something
about the uh, the Colorado Rockies. So it feels like
(48:45):
I'm going about to find out. Either way, you're gonna
find out. We've talked about the Mariners this month, right,
mm hmm, they're good.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
Yes, that sound they're fine. That sound right to take
a Matt Thomas line, they're fine.
Speaker 5 (48:54):
Have they had a good month?
Speaker 4 (48:56):
Sure?
Speaker 5 (48:56):
Okay, Well the Mariners this month, nice little winning streak,
won a few games. Mariners have won all but one
of their games. They're nine and one. They both stay two.
Nine to seven era one of the best in baseball,
not the best, one of the best. Era is based
on it's like how many runs per nine innings? So
an era of one that means you give up one
run every nine innings, right, earned runs, right, not the
(49:18):
tack on the higher the number. When it gets over four,
you probably didn't have a very good month. If it's
over five, you need to start releasing people. When it's
six or seven, you're the worst team in baseball. If
it's eight, you then probably should be contracting The Energers.
Definitely been fired. Your GM has been fired, and you
might have to look for a new sponsor for the state.
Are you gonna tell me it's north of nine for them?
Speaker 4 (49:39):
Yeah, it is. It's nine to sixty. Good little Rockies,
have some pride. You're playing for the ultimate prize, not
an NBA championship. They did have a good enough game yesterday.
This is after they shut out the Cardinals yesterday. They
pitched a shutout to get their era under ten and
get their whip, which is walks and hits per nine
or per any pitched under two. Was this in Colorado? No, exactly.
Speaker 5 (50:04):
So that's what's in store for the Astros. What's immediately
in store is Hunter Brown is on the mound. Walker
Bueller is on the mound. Carlos Correa is not in
tonight's starting lineup. Has played in almost every inning of
the Astros eleven games since he's been acquired. And they
would like to win a third series in a row.
And that is how you maintained and you're standing in
the division. You went too out of every three games,
you're sixty six and thirty three are gonna be great.
(50:26):
You're really really good.
Speaker 4 (50:27):
M hm.
Speaker 5 (50:27):
So if that is what they can continue, they'll be
just fine. I think they'll be okay either way.
Speaker 4 (50:33):
We'll find out why the Korea deal is even more
incredible in hindsight, and we'll catch up on what happened
over at in ourg stadium with those Texans we were
talking about earlier. That is straight ahead.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety. It is the
A team.
Speaker 4 (50:57):
It's Sports Talk seven nineties, Space City Home Work Wednesday
edition of the program.
Speaker 5 (51:02):
We will get the Astros on deck.
Speaker 4 (51:05):
Shows started a little bit earlier, as they will play
the game an hour earlier today, so that I'll begin
at five o'clock. In the meantime, Texans getting ready for
preseason game number two indoors and not just any indoors.
I mean, they could have practiced in the bubble, but
why would you do that when you have a multi
billion dollar stadium next door that you could just do
(51:26):
it there.
Speaker 5 (51:26):
Yeah, they unveiled a few things to the media yesterday
that didn't have radio shows at two o'clock, so I
was not there yesterday.
Speaker 4 (51:32):
I gonna sound bitter. I'm not bitter.
Speaker 5 (51:34):
I'm just saying that people who have time available to
themselves can attend practices that don't conflict with their work schedule.
Speaker 4 (51:43):
I'm not one of them.
Speaker 5 (51:44):
I have a work schedule. Don't sound better good, I
shouldn't sound bitter.
Speaker 4 (51:48):
I am not bitter.
Speaker 5 (51:48):
So well, what they unveiled beyond the food, which certainly
would have been tasty and will be tasty for the
upcoming home games, the first of which is this only
preseason game they have the games during the regular season
their home game they will get in the postseason or two.
But they also unveiled a couple of things for all
of the fans, whether they eat or not. New video boards.
(52:10):
So I got a chance to see those today. They're
obviously incredibly sharp. What all they will be asked to
do and display. We'll see a little bit more of
that as the season unfolds. And also the new sound system.
They were playing what I thought was louder than usual music,
and I have a very strong source within the team,
Hannah indicated this isn't even even close to full volume.
Speaker 4 (52:34):
That's not who I thought you were going to say, Oh,
my goodness, the rock and roll is going to be
so loud.
Speaker 5 (52:39):
Well, he's they do. From my guess is they do
hear what the fans here from their open window booth
during games. We don't necessarily if they have.
Speaker 4 (52:50):
An open booth, I make sure that the booth to
the rest of the people is closed because I don't
lack it open.
Speaker 5 (52:55):
They like most broadcasters, they have their own booth. They
can do with that they please.
Speaker 4 (52:59):
I'm Beyonce.
Speaker 5 (53:00):
I don't have my own booth. I share it with
all the other members of the media, the traveling media,
the content teams, for the visiting teams, and everybody else
that's up there. You shared it with John McClain and
he made sure it was closed. It's more often than
not the windows that are openable.
Speaker 4 (53:16):
Think I've ever seen them open there.
Speaker 5 (53:17):
I've seen them open a few So when they do
some presentations, I think the three times they have inducted
somebody into the least up they go down. Actually, really
I think so, Like I've never even seen what they
look like. Remember, but yes, they can be open when
they issue the red jackets, the three of them that
they've issued, so to speak, and they will have another
one issued this year with Janis getting hers. They have
(53:41):
opened up those windows for us. But I do think
fans will be pleasantly excited about at least those two
field side viewing side part of the ambiance of the
game side changes to the city. But yeah, they practiced
inside today. This will walk through because they're playing a
football game. Tomorrow, the Texans are playing a football game
against the Panthers. It's just not in the stadium. It's
(54:01):
not going to be televised, and it's outside at nine
am in the morning. All the things that you'd like
to see in a game, a regular season game, we're
gonna get to see out there, and that's why it's
of great importance the offensive line. Yesterday, if you remember,
we told you that Titus Howard basically didn't take any
reps yesterday, though he was at practice and nothing seemed
(54:22):
to happen during practice. I didn't think anything was wrong
with him, and based on what he did today, I
still don't because today he was back at right tackle.
They still don't have the original starting left tackle at
the beginning of camp, that was Cam Robinson. He went
through warm ups today but did not take any walk
through reps with the first, second, third, or fourth team,
then none in general, and so that means Tay Ursery
and Titus Howard continue. Ursery starting at left side, Howard
(54:46):
starting on the right side, with Howard bumping out from
guard to tackle. Ed ingram As A begun work with
the first unit over the last handful of practices, going
all the way back to their work at the Greenbrier,
and Jake and Anders continues to appear here to be
the starting center for this team the way that they've
deployed them, And we'll know a lot more about that
tomorrow because they're legitimately playing a game. When the Panthers
(55:09):
put their ones out there, if the teams want to
go ones versus ones, and I presume they would like
to do that, then we'll know that for sure. We'll
know who are the ones. Obviously, when CJ's out there,
those are the ones, and I assume Jake Andrews along
with Lake and Tom Winson will be out there are
their tight end group, unfortunately, has obviously made a bit
of a switch. With Brevin Jordan going to IR. Another
(55:30):
tight end went on IR today. He spent less than
a week on the Texans roster here just a couple
of days. Dalton Keen, who was recently signed before Brevin
Jordan's injury, he himself now lands on Texans IR. They
brought in another tight end and he was at practice today.
This is the second time this week they've brought a
player in and their very first practice them included them
(55:51):
wearing a jersey without a name on it. Yesterday it
was McDermott, but today he got a jersey with his
name on it. And we'll see if the newcomer, McKitty
will get a name on his jersey. He wore a
very sad thirty eight at practice today, made a few
catches with the third and fourth team, who we will
likely be working with initially for this treat Well. I
mean there's no name on it's just a blue white
(56:12):
thirty eight with blue letter or blue jersey. It's like
what every Yankee has to do such everybody else is
I know who this guy? I mean I know them
by number. I'm following the team, but I do think
what we will also see. I think obviously you're going
to see number one and number two at tight end,
Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover.
Speaker 4 (56:30):
They'll be on the field together.
Speaker 5 (56:31):
There's plenty of packages that Nick Hayley has in their
offense that has both calls for both tight ends to
be on the field.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (56:37):
They've both been getting reps singularly with the ones and
will continue to do so the next tight end in line.
And Irv Smith did return to practice today. He's clearly
a veteran with a lot more field time than anybody
else there among that other group. But the rookie Luke
lache I wouldn't be surprised if he got some opportunities,
you know, with stronger units, not working with the third team,
(56:59):
but rather than second, potentially with the first and seen
a little bit of that over the last couple of days,
just either by necessity or that they've liked what they've
seen from him. It's the best way to find out
about these players is, you know, bump them up with
that level of competition already. Know we're gonna see every
other rookie out there, just like we did in the
first preseason game. And again, tomorrow's different than Saturday. I
do not expect CJ. Stroud to play a televised snap
(57:22):
before they play the Rams. I expect them to take
a starter's number of snaps the next two thursdays joint
practice with the Panthers, Tomorrow, joint practice in Detroit or
at the Lions next Thursday. That's when he's gonna get
his work. That's when most of the guys that aren't
going to play in the games on Saturday are going
to get their work too. Daniel Hunter will Anderson junior,
(57:42):
Derek Stingley junior, and I'm not sure how many others
should likely be on that same play schedule.
Speaker 4 (57:49):
See you Thursday. You know, it's looking at games like this,
especially on a quote short week, even though it's not
as short since they played Saturday instead of Sunday normal weeks.
Speaker 5 (58:00):
On Saturday to Saturday normal week.
Speaker 4 (58:03):
Yeah, I guess, I guess I'm thinking of tomorrow's action
as Yeah, that's okay, Yeah, absolutely game, but it is
for sure, except a lot of the players were looking
forward to seeing didn't play at all, But I feel
like that was that was Saturday's game too, and every
game in the preseason, I was really looking forward to
seeing these guys that won't play well.
Speaker 5 (58:20):
They're not like every team. Ben Johnson has said that
their guys are going to go out there in this
second preseason game, Caleb Williams and the rest of the
starters will get some run out here. Everybody's in a
little bit different situation, and a third year quarterback not
playing at all in a preseason game with the ones,
that's not always the case. I mean, I don't know
what Dave Canallis is going to do. Just let's call.
(58:41):
You know, with Bryce Young, I think teams that set
up joint practices do it so they don't have to
play them. But if you're confident in your offensive line,
you're probably confident in saying, well, I'm gonna give my
starters two series. I'm going to give them ten snaps
fourteen snaps, so they their first game isn't their first
live action together. I don't really see how the Texans
could feel that way. No matter what they see in
(59:02):
a preseason game last week. Maybe after they see what
they see this week tomorrow, they'll feel differently, but they
will have already taken care of it in the joint practice. You.
I don't think Demiko can call coach Canalis and say, hey, Saturday,
I'm playing my ones. That includes CJ.
Speaker 4 (59:19):
Stroud.
Speaker 5 (59:20):
When you mentioned to the eleven guys out there on
defense not to tackle him, all right, thanks by.
Speaker 4 (59:24):
He can't do that.
Speaker 5 (59:26):
It doesn't work that way. He can tell that to
him tomorrow, though, and Dave will say, no problem. Same
goes for Bryce and my other quarterbacks. They'll say, great
Ursery in all likelihood will be your starting left tackle,
believe it or not.
Speaker 4 (59:41):
Believe it.
Speaker 5 (59:42):
Can't say it any faster.
Speaker 4 (59:44):
So how do you feel about that in light of
if I put it into this context or this this prism,
if you will. And again, part of it was the matchup.
You remember Dwayne Brown's first game.
Speaker 5 (59:56):
I don't remember it per se, but I know that
it did not go well. You know why it didn't
go well?
Speaker 1 (01:00:00):
Though?
Speaker 4 (01:00:00):
You know you know who they played, who they play.
You really don't remember, dude, what year was this, two
thousand and eight? I was probably there, I don't remember.
You aren't. He was on the road.
Speaker 5 (01:00:09):
See, I didn't even know this real city they played, Okay.
Speaker 4 (01:00:12):
Steele, come on, dude.
Speaker 5 (01:00:14):
And then James Harrison was an absolute maniac at the time.
And seriously, Dwayne, get it together. It was a Hall
of Fame caliber player in your first game. But what's
wrong with you?
Speaker 4 (01:00:24):
But he I mean, it's not that his first season
was all bad. It was just that, Yeah, that was
super into the frying pan and the fire at the
same time that congrats, kid, here's your debut as a rookie.
Go get him, And by go get him, I mean
get trucked by, Yes, a Hall of Famer and other
players who were awesome.
Speaker 5 (01:00:46):
I just if that ends up being how it goes down.
You know, I'm just grow up front that the Rams
have Jared Verse and others on their front, even without
Aaron Donald now another year removed, and we'll keep talking
about how great he was, I'm sure for a long
long time. But they are very good upfront. They run
things very well, so in addition to just simply having
very good talent, I think their scheme is difficult to
(01:01:08):
counter and we'll see how they handle it, but I
still think that's how the Texans are going to do it. Otherwise,
your option is playing Cam Robinson and Titus Howard and
Nursery's watching. I think Ursery on the field is better, and.
Speaker 4 (01:01:18):
I'm even I'm more pointed towards the games that actually count.
But we'll happen.
Speaker 5 (01:01:22):
What we're talking about the opener against the Rams, but.
Speaker 4 (01:01:24):
The games that I'm talking about, just that game, I'm
talking about the first handful, because we were talking about
that portion of the schedule, uh yesterday, and how it's
gonna be dicey because the Bucks still have a good
front as well. All Right, we'll take a quick time out,
we'll come right back here on the A team and
we'll be joined by our own Chris Gordy.
Speaker 2 (01:01:43):
The a team on Sports Talk seven, Nike.
Speaker 5 (01:01:52):
Music with our Astros inCider and co hosts of the
Crawford Box Cast, Chris Gordy and Chris As, We welcome
you in here, talk a little Major League baseball specific
the Houston Astros. Will take note in first thing, what
Joe A. Spotta had to say a few moments ago
over at the ballpark about the Astros closer who is
on the fifteen day il with what they've called a
(01:02:12):
left shoulder strain. Joe Spotta today saying Josh Hader is
seeking a second opinion for his shoulder strain. While he
did not disclose what the first opinion was, he did say,
this is gonna take a little bit longer than two weeks.
Give Josh his space.
Speaker 4 (01:02:29):
What do you think about that?
Speaker 11 (01:02:31):
Well, it's funny because the first the first quote I
heard was or I read, was the Brian McTaggart where
he said or I saw the quote first, and it
said this is going to take a little bit longer
than two weeks.
Speaker 4 (01:02:41):
I'm like, oh, okay, so so not fifteen day.
Speaker 11 (01:02:44):
But then when they say the words he's seeking a
second opinion, I mean I'm trying to think back to
any of these recent injuries where somebody has sought a second.
Speaker 4 (01:02:52):
Opinion and it's been good news, you know what I mean,
Like it's it's.
Speaker 5 (01:02:56):
First opinion says it looks like you're gonna need to
not throw a baseball over into ten days, but then
you can you're probably good after that. What. No, I
don't like that at all. You see, I can be
back in ten days. No, please, somebody come in and
say I'm out longer.
Speaker 11 (01:03:09):
Yeah, No, I mean it's always first opinion is so, yeah,
that sold your shoulder strain. There's a tear in there.
We're gonna have to repair it with surgery. Oh I
don't like that. Let me go get a second opinion again.
I'm just saying hypothetically, or we don't know what the
deal is. But I like to say that I could
translate a little bit of Dana Brown speak, and he
(01:03:30):
was on with Sean Salisbury this morning, and when Dana
kind of Dana likes to give some positive, you know,
lean positive when he can, when he wouldn't even commit
to the fifteen days and then we'll check and see,
kind of reading between the lines seem to me that
this was maybe a little bit more serious, and.
Speaker 5 (01:03:46):
So, yeah, fifteen day Aisle. We mentioned this yesterday. It's
not relevant to the timeline the players on. It's your
only option. There's not a seven day IL, there's not
a twenty one day IL, there's not a forty five
day IL. You put them on the al in his picture,
that means they're going on for fifteen days. If you
need a ross spot cleared, then they moved to the
sixty day. He's going on the fifteen day IL, and
it's not related to the amount of time that he's
going to be gone. Not to mention they don't know
(01:04:08):
the amount of time he's going to be gone. Alarmist
me makes me wonder what part of the twenty twenty
sixth season is in jeopardy for Josh Hater.
Speaker 11 (01:04:17):
Yeah, I mean, that's what it feels like. And if
you're a fan, how can you not jump to this.
It has been a season marred by injuries. Any other
team would have been throwing in the towel, we're done,
let's trade some pieces off of the deadline instead. This
team has overcome it for so much of the year,
but now you're handed another huge blow. Who was going
(01:04:38):
to close out those games. I mean, look, we can
get through the season without paying you for a stretch.
We can get through the majority of the season without
your and on and all this. You know, going to
the postseason, maybe one of our bats gets hot, but
not having Josh Hater.
Speaker 4 (01:04:50):
He is the closer.
Speaker 11 (01:04:51):
He is the the we're up by one, let's go
his closest thing down in a playoff game, and now
that thing, that whole dynamic changes. Not saying, Brian a
bre you ca do it, but in a perfect world, yes,
you wanted Josh Hater in there. He's been awesome, He's
had a one of his best years he's had ever,
and hypothetically lose him again.
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
Just look at the calendar here.
Speaker 11 (01:05:12):
Let's just say it's takes a month, and you know
it's gonna be a lot of rehab and getting him back.
Speaker 4 (01:05:17):
I mean, you start to run out of time here. Well,
let's I'll get these stupid and obviously stupid question out
of the way. They're not going to bring Ryan Presley back,
so stop asking. For those of you who think that's
a good idea.
Speaker 11 (01:05:28):
Yeah, Chandler Roam tweeted that out the other day. He said,
there has been zero conversation on that front.
Speaker 5 (01:05:33):
So wex mentioned yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:05:35):
If you look at his extended numbers, if you will,
like run, don't walk, run away from the Carrera.
Speaker 11 (01:05:43):
Reunion is looking so far, so good. But I just
cautioned fans, you gotta and Dana Brown, it's not like
he's been here as long as the fans have. You
can't make decisions based on emotional ties like, oh, he
was great before, let's bring him back.
Speaker 4 (01:05:58):
The numbers say he's not good anymore. Just bring back
Justin Berlander. If you really want to see what that's about, close.
Speaker 11 (01:06:03):
That chapter of the book and say thank you for
your time here. We're not bringing you back. But you know,
that's the question is it becomes is there an arm
in your in your minor league system? But like the
timing right now, you wouldn't even want to do that.
You wouldn't want to bring up a guy from Triple
A to come start closing games.
Speaker 4 (01:06:19):
So I don't know.
Speaker 11 (01:06:21):
I mean, it seems like they're gonna have to figure
this thing out in house with the pieces that they have.
And oh, by the way, it feels like Brian King,
who was so good for so much of the season
maybe starting to run out of gas. You know, Bennett
Sussa has been up and down. I mean, it's just
you start to look at this bullpen and it's not
as strong as it was with a healthy hater.
Speaker 5 (01:06:40):
The rest of the story, and Carea is out of
the lineup today and Joe Spotted confirmed what we all knew.
It's just a scheduled off day. They've got an off
day tomorrows. Who are able, if he's not needed tonight,
in any capacity to package those two off days together
before they begin a series of games without off days
beginning with these series against Baltimore. More to the point,
the Astros are going to be able to make it
through here if their aces are aces you've gotten, really
(01:07:02):
I don't I think the words lucky. With Jason Alexander
delivering the last couple of starts like he's had. I
think it was pretty positive that you got five innings
each out of Javier and arrag Getty and only allowed
two runs in the back to back games. However each
of them got there. The bottom line was that those
are winnable games after their days were done. That's good,
but it's on the aces at this point and I
(01:07:24):
don't think either one of them is at optimum pitching
right now. How do you feel like the final forty
two games eight to ten starts are likely to play
out for Hunter Brown who goes today and fromberveld Is.
Speaker 11 (01:07:35):
Yeah, I mean that's that's another thing too, is in
a perfect world, you'd love to be thinking about skipping
a start here and there for either guy to just
kind of give them a little bit of a break.
You know, Hunter Brown and least has been after what
two or three shaky outings, His last couple outings have
been better. Yeah, I mean the last one you'd be
left in the sixth inning. But fromber has been a
little a little bit more iffy as of late with
(01:07:57):
his outings.
Speaker 4 (01:07:57):
So I don't know. I I you make a great point.
I mean, those if they're gonna get this.
Speaker 11 (01:08:03):
Thing done and they're gonna win the division and be
a playoff team, Hunter Brown and froberveldas have got to
carry their weight the rest of the way. But yeah,
how do you balance wear and tear? Like Dana said,
everybody gets the August blues. You know, this is the
time of year where you really got to dig deep
because you're like, my god, played one hundred plus games
and so they got forty to go. But yeah, it
starts with those guys. But I'm just I'm encouraged, at
(01:08:26):
least by Javier I thought was very great, great showing
from him the other night, All things considered, I think
I said it with Matt Thomas or somebody, you can
go five and give you two earned runs, that's a win.
Speaker 4 (01:08:37):
That was a win.
Speaker 11 (01:08:38):
And then Arraghetty, yes, the walks were not great, but
to only give up the two runs last night, and
he gave you a chance. And that's all you can
ask from your number three, four and five guys is
give our bats a chance to win a game.
Speaker 4 (01:08:50):
And those guys have done that so far. Yeah, as
Wax pointed out, you got two runs in five innings
from both of the first two starters in this series.
You gotta win first night, and well we know what
happened last night. But that bullpen has been so much better.
And that's what.
Speaker 7 (01:09:06):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:09:07):
It just it sucks because I'm looking I'm really looking
forward to twenty twenty six when the Astros have zero
injuries because the sports guys are like, all right, we're
gonna let up on you because of what twenty twenty
five has been.
Speaker 11 (01:09:16):
Well, the other thing I want to do too, is
I got to put some pressure in these bats. Look,
you added Korea, you added Jesu Sanchez, you added your iss, Like,
these guys have to perform. You know, we had three
new bats in Korea has Yeah, but I'm just saying, like,
you've added three new bats, so you know what, I
don't want to hear down the stretch, my god, the
other sound of really good man. I mean, I'm sorry
(01:09:38):
unless it's Tark Schoobol, Like I'm not tipping my cap
and going Garrett Crochet or Dustin Dude.
Speaker 4 (01:09:44):
That guy's awesome. Okay, go go score some runs, find
a way.
Speaker 5 (01:09:48):
That's what That's what they need to do these final
forty two games beginning tonight, and you'll have it right
here on Sports Talk seven niney Chris Gordy, host of
the Crawford Box Cast. We appreciate the time, Thanks, Bella's
appreciate it. And Red sox An how earlier than normal
for an evening game over at dik And Park first
pitch six' ten, Tonight so we'll get into The astros
on deck show in a little over an hour right
(01:10:09):
there at five o'clock here on the, eighteen.
Speaker 2 (01:10:13):
The eighteen On Sports talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:10:24):
Eighteen continuing here On Sports talk seven Ninety Astro's Red
Sox rubber game coming up at five o'clock with The
astros On Deck. Show but good to catch up With
gordy again this, week AND i WISH i could give better.
NEWS i just WHEN i See Channel rome's tweet, saying,
(01:10:46):
yeah you Got Josh hater going for a second, opinion
the dreaded second opinion. Tweet the dreaded second opinion phrasing
that's second in my, book only to the. Discomfort you
know HOW i feel about that.
Speaker 5 (01:10:59):
Word, well one of them tells you, something the other one.
Speaker 4 (01:11:03):
Doesn't, yeah but discomfort feels like it's always the gateway
to whatever is bad it's about to. Happen not, always,
admittedly but in this, case anybody going for a second,
opinion especially On august, thirteenth.
Speaker 5 (01:11:19):
To Quote Michael, scott AS i mentioned With, Gordy i'm
Not i'm not even thinking about this. Season to, me
it sounds like it's significant if you're going for a second.
Opinion that says to, me guessing, hypothetically Normally i've seen it.
Before that means it's a significant. Situation you. Know the
situation with est operettis where he. Got you can't get
(01:11:40):
multiple second. Opinions he got a second and third opinion
and shows a path that is just a shorter timeframe
to a, return potentially not necessarily for this, year but
certainly what appeared to be shorter term than undergoing. Surgery
but his season this season still in. Jeopardy AND i
think that's what we're possibly seeing with With. Hater, again
(01:12:00):
The astros didn't say. That i'm just making an. Assumption,
CLEARLY i hope you see that hear. That we'll find
out more when they know more and when they're willing
to divulge, more and maybe it'll come From josh. Himself
but he's in year two of his time with The.
Astros next, year at the halfway point of next, season
he reaches the halfway point of his five year contract
at ninety five million. Dollars he's pitched in the playoffs
(01:12:22):
for The astros. Once if, healthy he has a chance
to pitch in the playoffs again this. Year that's why
they went out and spent that, money because they felt
like they needed somebody or could certainly use somebody that
turns likely wins into, wins confirms you're going to, win
closes out Those you've out played him for eight, innings
now you need three more. Outs, okay, good we got.
Speaker 4 (01:12:43):
It that's a.
Speaker 5 (01:12:43):
Win they'll be turning that over to, others AND i
do think it's pretty clear That Brian abray will be
given the bulk of those. OPPORTUNITIES i actually think there's
a little bit more confidence in some of the other
arms susas specifically that may end up with some of.
Those and you still got to wonder about these guys
and how much you're using them and how often they're
going out. THERE i would love it if that was
something That joe a SPOT i had to. Consider, Well
(01:13:05):
i've Used Brian abray to close out three games already this.
Speaker 4 (01:13:08):
Week.
Speaker 5 (01:13:08):
Awesome that means you're. Winning that means you're playing commeetative.
Baseball that means you're staying in this race for the division.
Title if you're, not then it's gone out the. Window
and at some point it would be it would be
nice to see if it's in turn It it's pretty
much a lost season For jordon, personally but If Jordon
alvarez plays twenty five games of the rest of the
(01:13:29):
way and is healthy when the season ends and there's
more baseball to play because you've made the, postseason and
he's a Healthy jordon when the postseason, begins that certainly
could change. Things because he's one of the three or
four best hitters in The American, league arguably the best
left handed hitter in the entire. League that is definitely
a little SOMETHING i do think could change their fortunes
(01:13:49):
or their forecast predictions on how things might, go even
if the team's not necessarily playing tremendous. Baseball and the
last Thing i'd say about, this And i'm sure it
will be true for the next four some odd. Games,
unfortunately when The astros close out the regular, season.
Speaker 4 (01:14:05):
This team will be.
Speaker 5 (01:14:07):
Gassed this team will be, spent and if there's postseason
baseball left to, play, great they will be a team
that had to get every ounce of whatever they could
provide for the six plus month marathon just to get.
There and now we'll have to play their next set
of games under those. Conditions and if.
Speaker 4 (01:14:28):
We want to be extremely honest with, ourselves and if
The astros want to do the same thing about what
has gone. On If i'm going to sit here and
ask questions about how much the pitch clock has affected
or not affected the amount of just the sheer amount
of serious injuries to the pitchers that play for The,
astros forget everyone else in the, majors THEN i have
(01:14:50):
to ask the, question how much has the usage because
of some of these other issues or, injuries what have,
you especially with regards to the, pitchers how much that
factor in going? Forward because, look what was everybody saying last,
year even When hater wasn't nearly as effective as consistently
at least as he has been this. Year, WELL i,
(01:15:12):
mean now that The astros have paid him the money
that The San Diego padres, wouldn't he hasn't mind going
out there and pitching an extra, inning getting an extra
out here and. There i'm not saying that's what contributed to,
This but it's not like he ran into a wall
Like Jake myers and that's why his shoulders messed. Up
there's only one thing that could have caused this. Pitching
So i'm not criticizing the medical. Staff i'm not Criticizing
(01:15:35):
joe Spot if for using him or running him into
the ground or anything like. That i'm just saying you
have to look at all aspects of this to ask
yourself why this particular injury in a season full of
them and then some is the latest one to have
us talking like this Because i'm just sick of.
Speaker 5 (01:15:52):
It, yeah there's nothing to dispute, debate and because we
don't have enough information to say you're wrong or you're.
Right we just know that the factors under which they
play based. Games now they have a pitch, clock they
have a ghost. Runner he's been used for two innings
more in the last two years than he has been
at any point of his. Career he's pitched pretty well
as A Houston astro three six era a WHIP i
still just above, nine which is better than it was
(01:16:14):
with The, padres significantly a little worse than it was
with The Milwaukee, brewers but almost. Identical he's had a
couple of seasons where he threw more innings than he
threw last. Year early in his, career in his mid.
Twenties last year he did so at age, thirty was
headed in a similar. Place this year he got. Hurt
the way you said it is probably not how you meant,
it but it's totally. True how did he get? Hurt,
(01:16:37):
yeah he. Pitched he got hurt by pitching. Baseball, yeah
he's a baseball. Player that's what.
Speaker 4 (01:16:42):
Happens why does everybody on The astros have to get?
Hurt that's my, Question well, everybody. Everybody i'm going to
get hurt this year at this. Rate AND i don't
even play for. HIM i just talk about them.
Speaker 5 (01:16:54):
As much as you're looking at the players that had
significant surgeries and are on their way back for The.
Astros the two that pitched already this, week the two
that will pitch for The Space cowboys this Week Luis
garcia tonight And lance McCullers junior later this. Week he's
already made his return To, ies recovering from a, blister
POSSIBLY Jp. Frantz, also we're also looking into twenty twenty,
(01:17:18):
six when presumably the return Of Renel blanco, comes presumably
the return Of Hayden wiznski. Comes it's a overwhelming, List Luis.
Speaker 4 (01:17:28):
GARCIA i, mean these are guys, that like it's not just,
oh these guys have missed some. Time you're talking, about
like these all these guys making their quote debut after
not pitching for nearly two. Years in a lot of,
cases it's not just small. Things and yet The astros
have been competitive throughout even like even last year you
(01:17:50):
played two playoff games in the Wild. Card you didn't
win either one of. Them clearly that is you, know
there are some franchises that would give anything just to
taste that kind of. Success, yes if you want to
call it, That and it just kind of shows you
how this era has been just so insanely fortunate so.
Far be it from me to be complaining about. It
it's just that maybe spread some of these injuries. Out
(01:18:11):
why do they all have to be in twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (01:18:12):
Five it's going to be tough this, year it will
remain tough next. Year don't have any definitive information On Josh,
hader but the seeking of a second, opinion which The
astros Manager joe Spot i mentioned out there at the ballpark,
today is where things are headed for. Him if and
when that information is delivered and, shared Obviously i'll have
a little bit better timeline on what it means for
this year's, team next year's, team and for the individual,
(01:18:34):
involved how much of it impacts his ability to help
this team win baseball games by. Hitching we will hear
from The astros general manager just a bit here in
the four o'clock. Hour got our signature segment coming up
halfway through this final hour of THE A team because
The astros On Deck show comes your way an hour
earlier tonight at five.
Speaker 2 (01:18:54):
THE A team On Sports talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:19:01):
Two Lifelong houston sports guys Named adham talking Your. Team
Adam clinton And Adam wetler are THE A team.
Speaker 4 (01:19:18):
Four o'clock hour underway here on A wednesday edition of
THE A. Team Sports sox seven to Ninety Space City
Home network got The astros And Red sox coming up
at five o'clock is when coverage you're got underway with
The astros On Deck, show looking forward to getting you
ready for the rubber game in this. Series on a
day where we kind of if there was any optimism
(01:19:41):
with regards to The Josh hayter. SITUATION i don't want
to say the wind was taken out of the sales
in the last half hour or, so but basically that's
what happened ye're.
Speaker 5 (01:19:51):
Talking About josh. Hater Joe spotty gave an update on
that and that he will need and is requesting a
second opinion on the shoulder strain that they reported yesterday
left shoulder, strain but no word on what the first opinion.
Was no word on a real, timeline though they acknowledged the.
Obvious we acknowledge it yesterday when it was also obvious
he's going to be gone more than the fifteen days
allotted for the fifteen DAY. Il but they don't really
(01:20:12):
have any additional information have to piece it together beyond,
that you know The Dana, brown the general manager for The,
astros makes his weekly visits here To Sports talk seven
ninety each and Every, wednesday nine thirty, am usually his
spot with The Sean Salisbury, show as it was earlier,
today SO i want to get you a little bit of.
That he had an update or was unsure of the
update On Josh hater earlier this. Morning so we'll begin
(01:20:35):
this portion of the conversation with him on a little
bit of how he would describe things moving, forward not
knowing definitively where things are headed With Josh, Hater, YEAH.
Speaker 7 (01:20:46):
I think it would be. Speculation i'm going to wait
for the doctor just to tell me exactly what it,
is and then we'll have to make the adjustment based
on the information that the doctor's given.
Speaker 12 (01:20:57):
Us dane was asked the, question And i'm going to
ask you because you know more about this THAN i.
DO i can't remember a time and it's not questioning,
somebody just is this? Normal well For lance, mccullors he's
going to get, us you, know a triple a start
when a.
Speaker 4 (01:21:10):
Guy gets a.
Speaker 12 (01:21:11):
BLISTER i just don't remember a time when a guy
went for a rehab start with a. Blister, normally it
heals and he's back in the. Rotation is this more
severe than a normal? Blister why there and not getting
the start here as opposed to going down and getting a.
START i just it doesn't seem. Normal but you know,
what then, again it's baseball and pro. Sports things aren't
normal these.
Speaker 7 (01:21:31):
Days, well you, know all blisters are not created.
Speaker 4 (01:21:34):
EQUAL i, MEAN i wasn't here at the.
Speaker 7 (01:21:36):
Time BUT i, remember you, know you guys went through
a period With, sanchez he had a. Blister it was
a real you, know it's a real bad. ONE i
think this, one it's so that he's going to have
to make a start and see how it feels in
the minor, leagues and then we'll make that. Adjustment but
all blisters are not created. EQUAL i think some. Blitters
(01:21:56):
i've been in the game long enough to know that
some blisters can last four, months depending on who it
is and how especially if they're breaking.
Speaker 4 (01:22:03):
Ball, Guys all, right let's let's get To.
Speaker 12 (01:22:05):
JORDON i Hate dan AND i know AND i do,
too AND i Hate i've said it on here when
you're not on, THAT i, know playing doctor sucks for,
you but that's the only way we get you're THE.
Gm so we got to ask when we Say jordon's
close and he's down In, florida you, know LIVE vp
and the rest of, it where are we when we
say close to getting back up to the major league.
Speaker 7 (01:22:24):
Team, yeah so we're building him up and he's TAKING
bp on the field right until the next step is
going to be LIVE. Vp we do give, him you,
know some time in between because we have to really. Evaluate,
okay you you took that LIVE, vp, uh and so
we'll have to give him a day off to see
(01:22:45):
how it. Feels so we don't we don't rush, it,
Right and so he's just finished SOME vp on the.
Field the next thing is going to be LIVE, vp
and then we'll try to get him some games after, that.
Speaker 4 (01:22:57):
And so he's.
Speaker 7 (01:22:58):
Progressing, uh there's no. Pain he's had multiple days OF.
Speaker 4 (01:23:03):
Bp on the.
Speaker 7 (01:23:04):
Field now our next step is to go to LIVE,
vp and if he progress through LIVE, vp we'll get
him facing you, know some some pictures in the, game
and then then we'll see where he's at after.
Speaker 12 (01:23:15):
That with that is are we down to the point
now since there's no pain and Structurally i'm assuming the
pictures are telling you that that it's. Healed SO i
will ask you, this is it now just on his
threshold of pain as to when he comes?
Speaker 7 (01:23:29):
Back, well not necessarily his. THRESHOLD i, mean because there's
some guys who can handle certain, thresholds and you, know
it may not be good for. You you may be you,
know may be fighting through an injury and you may
be doing more harm than.
Speaker 5 (01:23:41):
Good SO i don't think it's about his.
Speaker 7 (01:23:43):
THREASHOLD i just think it's about how do you feel
the next. Day we don't want to push you on
this thing because you need your fingers in your hands
to hit and so you.
Speaker 4 (01:23:53):
Know once he can clear these, hurdles.
Speaker 7 (01:23:56):
We're going to get him back here as soon as.
Speaker 12 (01:23:57):
Possible all, right dand with a little over four forty
games to. Go you talk, about you, know it's a long.
Season we're almost in that four hundred meter close to
the sprint mode of the one hundred. Meter what's your
thought process on days off with about forty plus games to.
Speaker 7 (01:24:11):
Go, yeah we're definitely approaching the last lap of this
season of one hundred and sixty two with forty two,
left and so we'll have to strategically find time for
these guys to take a break because you really.
Speaker 4 (01:24:27):
Want them in those last twenty.
Speaker 7 (01:24:29):
Days it's probably you, know you're only going to be
able to experience the actual days off that you have
on the, schedule and so you want those guys playing
the last twenty to twenty five. Games and so we
still have to strategically give these guys a break because
that final, sprint you want all of your. Horses and
(01:24:50):
so we'll still blend in some time off as we go.
Forward BUT i guess when we get like into that
twenty to twenty five games, left that's when you have
to go far sprint into the final. Game and so
we're still in that point where we have to give
these guys some time. Off the one hundred and sixty
two is.
Speaker 4 (01:25:09):
Real you don't want to jeopardize.
Speaker 7 (01:25:13):
Someone getting, her you, know for multiple weeks when you
only have forty two games, passed and so you have
to really really be strategic about your time.
Speaker 5 (01:25:24):
Off time Off Carlos korea today is one such. Day
not in the lineup, today and couple that with tomorrow's off.
Day mariners they play a little bit earlier in The astros.
S they'll go off at five point. Thirty they're at The.
Orioles that was a one nothing win for The mariners.
Yesterday they're Facing rogers. Today rogers has been the quietest
best starting pitcher in The American league all. Season maybe
(01:25:45):
that will help. Out The astros won. Nothing that's the
final score of Today's tigers.
Speaker 4 (01:25:51):
Game Advantaged.
Speaker 5 (01:25:52):
Tigers they beat The White sox won. Nothing they now
have seventy wins as a division. Leader The astros still
sitting at sixty. Seven who may be a team The
astros have to consider in the wildcard? RACE i don't
think so with their current six and a half game
lead over, them but behind a second good start From Meryl,
kelly they've got an eighth inning lead of four to
(01:26:12):
two Over Meryl kelly's former team he got to start against,
today and a few other teams are in the. Race
The guardians are six games over at sixty two and fifty.
Six they were winners over The marlins, yesterday have them.
Again The yankees beat The twins, yesterday same match up,
today Though Joe ryan pitches for The. Twins has had
a very good season and the best team in The American.
(01:26:33):
League they've got The cubs again. Today The Blue jays
sitting at seventy wins just like The, tigers three more
wins Than houston as they go into play today Against
Kyle Tucker's Chicago, cubs who are getting lapped by the
hotter than The. Mariners Milwaukee, Brewers Brewers mariners is your
Chock World series favorite right? Now, WELL i keep talking
(01:26:56):
about The mariners and their one loss record this, month
almost as good as The, brewers who have not.
Speaker 4 (01:27:04):
Lost if those were the two participants in this Year's World,
series would it? Eclipse and by ECLIPSE i mean less
than The diamondbacks lost to that stupid team From oklahoma
a few seasons ago on The World series. First he
was a.
Speaker 5 (01:27:17):
Shame that it would because we rarely get the team's
the two best records in The World. Series thus the
teams that had the best regular seasons basically that aren't
is not the best team unless it was The, astros
in which they would at least Go, well you, don't,
yeah you don't normally see both of them get. There
sometimes you don't even see one of them get. There
but if they, did the star power of that particular
(01:27:40):
Series World. SERIES i, mean one, year we're five months
into people knowing who cal nationally knowing who Cal raley.
Is he could very well win THE mvp this. Year
that's pretty good for the star power of a, series
for the viewership of. It he just won the home Run.
DERBY i, MEAN i think that's. Okay but this is
a this is a Deep West coast. Team they're in
(01:28:02):
The Great. Northwest nobody watched The Seattle mariners baseball in
seventy five percent of the country for one hundred percent
of the, year and now they're playing one of the
smaller market. Teams they've been very good for a number of,
years fringe playoff. Team most years are in the. Playoffs
other years they've gotten on an incredible. RUN i thought
some of the players they lost this past offseason would
(01:28:23):
prevent it dead. Wrong they've been incredible and who's who
are you turning tuning?
Speaker 4 (01:28:28):
Into?
Speaker 5 (01:28:28):
Watch Christian yelich is an elite. Talent THE mvp caliber
player doesn't carry any. CACHET i think the league would
prefer a Not Brewers Mariners World.
Speaker 4 (01:28:39):
Series, well they got what they wanted last year and
it was a huge. Flop it was a five game
series between the two Market. Titans ALTHOUGH i don't do
you think IF mlb had truth serum injected they would
prefer The dodgers or The yankees winning another repeat of?
Speaker 5 (01:28:56):
That, WELL i think what they want is selling the
ad time and being able to gather the income for
all Seven World series. Games please play, Them please go seven.
Games drama would be, great and usually a seven game
series brings. Drama they don't want a five game. Series
they don't care who's in, it don't don't play five,
games don't, dominate and sure as, heck don't.
Speaker 4 (01:29:16):
Sweep what about a gentleman, sweep which is what The dodgers.
DID i refuse to acknowledge that. Term why do you
hate it so? MUCH i don't, KNOW i just do
WHY i need to know at least one. Reason it's
clearly when we.
Speaker 5 (01:29:29):
Talk about a, sweep a lot of people break out the, brooms, right, yeah,
okay so a gentleman?
Speaker 4 (01:29:35):
Sweep what's? That do you sweep the whole?
Speaker 5 (01:29:37):
Room but you don't use the, dustpan and so somebody
else has to. DO i love most about this is
that you have clearly put thought into. This who came
up with?
Speaker 4 (01:29:48):
This?
Speaker 5 (01:29:49):
Yeah what about A? Baker's does in same concept for?
Speaker 7 (01:29:51):
You?
Speaker 5 (01:29:52):
One it's the same. Thing it's thirteen. EGGS i mean
that seems like you did that because maybe something was
gonna go wrong with one of the first twelve. Eggs
i'll have A baker's, doesn't and then you, thought.
Speaker 4 (01:30:03):
Oh you used all.
Speaker 5 (01:30:04):
Twelve one people like, This oh this is kind of.
Cool the gentleman's sweep is not. Cool it should not catch,
on AND i will never say it in context of
what it.
Speaker 4 (01:30:13):
MEANS i. KNOW i just do you want to talk
about where The rockets will be playing and how many
games will be at The Toyota center next? Segment? Uh
some of That i'd like to talk, about so? Easy all,
right we'll do that next here On THE A, Team.
Speaker 2 (01:30:28):
THE A team On Sports talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:30:37):
MAN i cannot wait to walk into The Toyota center
and See Kevin durant play basketball this year for The Houston.
Rockets it's gonna be awesome The Toyota center lit up at,
night because you know they're gonna do, that like for
opening night when they actually have their home, opener which
has They has it been formally announced with that is? Yet,
no it has, not but there are rumors as to
(01:30:59):
who it could. Be And i'm not gonna say.
Speaker 5 (01:31:01):
There's also a, rumor pretty substantiated. RUMOR i would say without,
fail it'll be early in the season their home.
Speaker 4 (01:31:06):
Opener, yeah CAN i give them a?
Speaker 5 (01:31:09):
Hint, well they open the season on opening. Night That's
october twenty, first That's. Tuesday they're on the road for that.
One we already knew that right here On Sports talk seven.
Nine we'll have the game For they'll be playing The
Free Throw, Merchants they'll be Playing Oklahoma. City they will
raise the banner that, night and then The rockets will
hand them their first loss of the.
Speaker 4 (01:31:26):
Season wouldn't that be?
Speaker 5 (01:31:27):
Nice, Yeah Kevin durant's gonna come back to haunt his
old team starting On. Tuesday means they probably will get
an extra day off before they play their next Game,
brutal which would mean they'll probably Play.
Speaker 4 (01:31:38):
Friday so all the back to backs that are going
to inevitably happen over the course of the, season and
we're definitely giving you an extra night of rest after
you've played one.
Speaker 5 (01:31:46):
Game, yeah so the second game of the season will
probably Be, friday and it may or may not be
the home.
Speaker 4 (01:31:52):
Opener it's fifty to fifty if it.
Speaker 5 (01:31:54):
Is CAN i give hints on the rumors about who
it will be.
Speaker 4 (01:32:00):
If you'd? Like CAN i give it A wex level
of just ultimate. Transparency it's not even really a. Hint
i'm telling you who it.
Speaker 5 (01:32:07):
Is i'm all, yours twins, involved twins. Involved, okay you
see WHAT i did? There, yes you gave it away.
COMPLETELY i didn't say. ANYTHING i didn't give anything. Away
i'm sure everybody out there knows that The rockets are
about to Sign robin And brooke already plays for The.
Clippers lopez is made that inside The toyota that's not
(01:32:28):
what's gonna. Happen but we do know four other. Dates
we Knew Christmas, day we Knew Opening, day and THE
Nba Cup games schedule was announced. Today the four games
within your five team, group so each team plays the
other four teams once and hopefully advances like the Eight
rockets did year. Ago their group Include San, Antonio, Portland,
(01:32:49):
denver And Golden. State they will Play San antonio And
Golden state on the. Road they will Play portland And
denver at home the, seventh First friday In. November that's
the road game At San. Antonio Following friday, night they
will Play portland At Toyota. Center the Following friday, night
they will Play denver At Toyota, center and the following
(01:33:09):
Week wednesday of that, week they will be on the
road At Golden. State and note that game In San
antonio six thirty. Tip three of those games will be
nationally televised in some form or. Fashion but LIKE i,
said we'll have all those games right here for you
On Sports talk seven to. Ninety so that's six, down
seventy six to. Go the schedule is expected to be announced.
(01:33:34):
Tomorrow the remaining games you don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:33:37):
About, well, listen if we are going to dedicate as
much time to The texan schedule as we do every,
year then you AND i are gonna have to go
down the.
Speaker 5 (01:33:46):
List i'll go win loss for the first seventeen eighty
seventeen to match THE nfl, SCHEDULE i can't go eighty.
Speaker 4 (01:33:53):
Two are you picking the seventeen you want to go
with or are you just not the first? Seventeen just
the first? Ones do you remember back in the fall of?
Now maybe eleven and. Six by the, way you've already done.
THIS i don't even know who they're.
Speaker 5 (01:34:04):
Playing you just think that's.
Speaker 4 (01:34:06):
The why eleven and?
Speaker 5 (01:34:07):
Why how do they lose six of their first seventeen?
Games eleven and, six like my faux. Outrage, well that
means they're forty four and twenty four sixty eight games
into the. Season that means they're twenty games. Over that
means there are going to be another fifty win.
Speaker 4 (01:34:20):
Team what is the over under on their win total this?
Year fifty five and a.
Speaker 5 (01:34:23):
Half i've seen a couple and It's i've seen one
that at fifty three and a. Half i've seen one
at fifty four and a, half AND i think we
might want to give it some time to final all
These we're almost, THERE i, think waiting until everything's in,
place we're a little too far from the opening of the.
Speaker 4 (01:34:40):
Season hoopark, question how much trouble WOULD i get in
IF i put money on the over? Legally of? Course?
Speaker 5 (01:34:49):
OH i Asked John, Mattier who's. That He's oklahoma's. Quarterback
we just talked about.
Speaker 4 (01:34:54):
This, Oh i'm.
Speaker 5 (01:34:55):
SORRY i don't want you to Ask Malik beasley AND
i definitely don't want you to Ask john Tay. Porter
what about the Stupid morris twin who paid off all
of his debt at the?
Speaker 4 (01:35:04):
Casino, finally apparently.
Speaker 5 (01:35:05):
That was NOT nba related, gambling was?
Speaker 4 (01:35:07):
IT i don't. Know it was just. Gambling it was
not paying your casino related. Activities in the, Second i'm
good for it the second part of that, question, like
you're good for it if as a member of the
broadcasting Staff i'm asking this, Question AM i going to
be in more trouble asking it on two networks that
air of The rockets. Games i'm not really going to do.
It too in the water would be. Warm, Yeah i'm
(01:35:29):
not going to do. It don't.
Speaker 5 (01:35:30):
Worry i've never gambled in my.
Speaker 4 (01:35:31):
Life.
Speaker 5 (01:35:32):
Yeah the addition of some networks because the great majority
of the NATIONAL tv games last year we're on THE
tnt side or THE espnabc. Side they're still around OBVIOUSLY
espnabc a big chunk of, it but you've ADDED nbc
clearly With, peacock you've Added. Prime there are more games
(01:35:54):
to pluck away from the LOCAL tv. Side The eagles
will be involved plural Calling rockets.
Speaker 4 (01:36:00):
Games, YES i. WAS i was chatting With noah the
other day And i'm, like when are you coming To?
Houston he, SAID i didn't know, yet but he's definitely
wants to hang meet. UP i don't know if we'll,
hang But i'm gonna try and get him on the
show the first the first TIME i know he's calling
A rockets game of some.
Speaker 5 (01:36:16):
Sort my intentions are to get him on with. It
if you're going to do a real hang Without, noah
Then i'd, say at all of the places you go
and order, drinks he'll get carted of. Duh he looks
like he's twelve in a good.
Speaker 4 (01:36:32):
Way it's just. Youthful it's incredible how good he. Is
and WHILE i don't know if if like some people
whose dad has obviously paved the way and he's following
in their, footsteps would get any more criticism for that
for sounding as much as he does like, him BUT
(01:36:55):
i think it's a testament to him just his character
as an.
Speaker 5 (01:36:59):
Individual he's a good.
Speaker 4 (01:37:00):
Dude if you ever get the chance to just chat with,
him you absolutely should because he's he loves the game
like we, do and it would BE i guarantee you'd
have a great conversation with. Him but he does not
get that kind of, blowback at LEAST i haven't seen.
Speaker 5 (01:37:13):
It, yeah just so you, Know noah's been legally able
to drink for about seven years in The states that
like to go with twenty one is the.
Speaker 4 (01:37:20):
Age, YEAH i JUST i do remember, though like once
upon a TIME i. DIDN'T i don't know if it
was because of something he said specifically OR i just
didn't necessarily like the, delivery and then it grew on
me of his, Dad Iron. Eagle but over time he
has AND i think you know what it, Was Matt
thomas would have him on his show all the, time
AND i think he's pretty good friends With Iron. Eagle
(01:37:42):
and that coupled with The Mike fortello, video which is
one of my probably top ten favorite sports videos that
doesn't involve an actual game because it's just so good
the back and FORTH i. WOULD i can't BELIEVE i
haven't Asked noah what his thoughts are on. That and
as you, Know, LA i think it was last. Season
might have been the season Before Mike furtello walked right
(01:38:05):
by us AND i had to talk to him about
nothing basketball, related but rather that epic clip on.
Speaker 5 (01:38:11):
YouTube, yeah our broadcast location has changed a couple, times
but it's always Near ROAD. Tv now they're up on
the platform and we're to there, left which means we're
going to run into a very famous play by play
voice most of the time, Time, yeah very often a
FORMER nba player most of the.
Speaker 4 (01:38:27):
Time sometimes we're all, players but sometimes. Greats, yeah we.
Speaker 5 (01:38:30):
Will you, Know Derek harper will sit up. There that's
not a Great Michael cage will sit up, There, Eh
Thorough bailey will sit up.
Speaker 4 (01:38:37):
There keep, Going.
Speaker 5 (01:38:39):
Eddie johnson will sit up.
Speaker 4 (01:38:40):
THERE i have we have, issues me and, him.
Speaker 5 (01:38:43):
And then the various play by play voices as. Well we'll,
usually you, know get a get a chat or two
up with them and if time, permitted it and we go.
Speaker 4 (01:38:50):
Ahead because if you had told me in nineteen ninety,
seven WHEN i was a, SOPHOMORE i want to, say
in high school And Eddie johnson hit that shot to
beat The jazz and the. Playoffs that years, later he
AND i would be beefing on something called social, media
and then every time we see each other now it's
like a grudging, hello like he's.
Speaker 5 (01:39:09):
Smart he smirks at me every time he sees, me
like it's no bad.
Speaker 4 (01:39:13):
Blood but like we really went after it during The
harden years because he would just always be so, LIKE
i don't even know the. Way it wasn't. CONDESCENDING i
just felt like he would not Give harden any sort
of props, whatsoever and there was no reason for him
to be that way other than just SIMPLY i guess
he didn't like the Way harden's game was esthetically pleasing
(01:39:36):
or lack, thereof but the statistics could not be argued,
with and yet he would he would come he would
come off somehow as like villa or. VINDICATED i should
say every Time harden would fail in the, postseason like
SEE i told you, so when a lot of, times
maybe the clinching game you could credit To harden's, play
(01:39:58):
but you don't get that far without him earlier in
that series or earlier in that postseason. Run SO i
don't know Why i'm defending him. NOW i can't stand
the dude now because of the way he left.
Speaker 5 (01:40:08):
Town that's the. Difference, quickly as we're on. It as
The Summer league was, underway some of the win totals
that sat at that, Time rockets had the second highest
win total Among Western conference, teams eight games fewer than
Ok see Okay see at sixty two and a, Half
houston at fifty four and a. Half The Western conference
team with the eighth highest, total last spot in the,
(01:40:29):
playoffs The San Antonio spurs forty three and a. Half
The Western conference team with the tenth highest win. Total
the last team to qualify for the playing, tournament The
Dallas mavericks at thirty nine and a.
Speaker 4 (01:40:41):
Half they're not going to win forty games this.
Speaker 5 (01:40:43):
Year depends how well their newbie plays and depends when
they're oldie comes.
Speaker 4 (01:40:48):
Back and in the, middle the other guy that will
always get, hurt his Name's Anthony. Davis he's definitely getting
hurt because he does every. Year all, right we will
continue here on A winday edition of the Program Sports
talks seven ninety as we will get to our signature.
Speaker 10 (01:41:04):
Segment It's, WEDNESDAY bs next the eighteen On Sports talk
seven ninety a little help over the hump with Some WEDNESDAY,
bs Two.
Speaker 5 (01:41:20):
Adams and a whole lot of bit, stealing.
Speaker 1 (01:41:22):
Bit stealing with the Bit, steelers better known as the
eighteen One thing That can.
Speaker 5 (01:41:28):
Get our signature segment started here on A wednesday midway
through our number three four. Thirties each every weekdy afternoon
we hit our signature, segment and it Is WEDNESDAY bs.
Today multiple varieties of that, term whether it's straight up
stealing something from The Sean Salisbury, show The, nightcap The
Matt Thomas show With Ross Space City, saturdays The Doug
(01:41:49):
Bike show or any, show or it's just straight UP.
Bs we're gonna go straight UP. Bs we like certain
players that have Left houston As astros and have played.
Elsewhere we've talked about it for a couple of years,
now and a lot this week says there was a
return to The astros Of Carlos korea and a return
To houston For Aux bregman and for all the work
(01:42:10):
he did when he wasn't breaking his hand on a.
LOCKER i think a lot of people here appreciated the
work done in An astros. Uniform By Film Mayton. Today
Film mayton is A. Ranger he was acquired just before
the trade deadline and has been a part of their revamped.
Bullpen he's pitched very well for them and he was
asked to do the same. Today gave you an update
(01:42:30):
on The rangers D backs.
Speaker 11 (01:42:32):
Game.
Speaker 5 (01:42:32):
Earlier rangers had a three to two lead into the eighth.
Inning he was summoned to the mound with the runner
on two outs in the eighth, inning protecting that one run,
lead no. Problem mayton sit, down struck Out Tyler. Locklear
headed to the bottom of the eighth. Inning rangers added a,
run so Gave philly a little, insurance so he was
(01:42:53):
sent back out of the mound for the ninth. Inning
first Batter jake McCarthy sit, down strikes, out. Winging second
Batter Alec thomas sit down three straight strikeouts For mayton
to open up his appearance and now protecting that two run,
lead gave up home run To james, McCann so what
still have a four to three, Lead still just need
(01:43:14):
that one. Out then he hit a, guy then he
walked a, guy and then he gave up a three
run home nice And arizona was able to close things
out in the ninth. Inning so The rangers are now
after their six to four, loss one hundred and twenty
two games into the season an average baseball team sixty
one wins and sixty one. Losses if you missed it.
(01:43:35):
Earlier today they made a very, important two very important roster.
Moves they Brought Evan Carter back off of his rehab
stint back with the. Squad played center field. Today he
went two for, four very helpful part of their team
right field, Today duran was out there in right field
because their normal right fielder went on THE, IL A
(01:43:56):
Dolas garcia stint on THE il for.
Speaker 4 (01:43:58):
Him what's he? Got he's got?
Speaker 5 (01:44:00):
ISSUES i know that he's got major.
Speaker 4 (01:44:03):
Issues anger. ISSUES i don't think you.
Speaker 5 (01:44:05):
CAN i don't think that's the designation that they put on.
Speaker 6 (01:44:07):
There.
Speaker 5 (01:44:08):
Anger how would you like just come? First can be
strains can be put on?
Speaker 6 (01:44:14):
There?
Speaker 5 (01:44:14):
Yeah like would they write issues after? Anger anger? Issues
mental anger management management is a term you often see
on injury, reports anger. Management wouldn't you be it's just
the left ankle's?
Speaker 4 (01:44:25):
Brain which would you also be angry if you had
to walk around carrying a thirty three leter.
Speaker 5 (01:44:29):
HEAD i, Would, well it depends how the rest of
his body is capable of.
Speaker 4 (01:44:33):
It let's tell it starts breaking. Down, yeah so that's
situation with the game that's in the.
Speaker 5 (01:44:37):
Books, obviously The mariners play later tonight in The astros
will have their first pitch a little bit later than,
that but earlier than. Usual over at The dike And
park to get things off and. Running did you have
an item that you wanted to add to The WEDNESDAY bs?
Speaker 4 (01:44:50):
Today SHOULD i just? Continue well, no well kind of,
yes and, NO i can't.
Speaker 5 (01:44:55):
Wait so it's IT'S.
Speaker 4 (01:44:57):
Bs so it can either be that's the or it
can be WHAT bs normally stands, for of, course AND
i just wanted to re emphasize THE bs it is
that The astros are dealing with the injuries they're dealing.
WITH i get. It it's.
Speaker 5 (01:45:10):
Sports injuries are a part of. It they're not this
much of a part of.
Speaker 9 (01:45:15):
It.
Speaker 5 (01:45:15):
Usually think how much more fun it will be when
it is for a team that wins the, division and
a team that wins in the, playoffs and a team
that's back in The World. Series think about how you'll
feel about this. Season Then i'll, say AND i quote
to the sports gods if that. Happens what About Fast,
Girls Fast, Cars Fast times At Ridgemont.
Speaker 4 (01:45:36):
High how was it? Forty? Exactly, no it's eighty.
Speaker 5 (01:45:40):
Two august, thirteenth nineteen eighty. Two that, movie which one
hundred percent of the time will be in my top
movies of all, time was released nineteen eighty, two starring
a very Young Nicholas. Cage starring is a bit of a.
Speaker 4 (01:45:58):
Stretch was he in the? Movie in the movie very
brief in one of the most seminal. SCENES i would
say he did not speak in the. MOVIE i think
he was in two. Scenes.
Speaker 5 (01:46:09):
YEAH i believe he worked At All American Burger. Yeah
and more, importantly and he was in the high school
gymnasium where they held the.
Speaker 4 (01:46:16):
Dance that's one thing that was happening in. There, Well
Miss vargas was meeting the. Students, okay that was. Another
jefferson was. Dancing that was another. THING nicolei was joining the.
Band that's a fourth. Thing what were You what do
you have in? Mind? WELL i was thinking about When
Phoebe kate's was giving a lesson that was in the.
CAFETERIA i thought that was the same. Scene, no two different.
Speaker 5 (01:46:35):
SCENES i thought when he was the rest of the,
MOVIE i was reading off the cut lines on the movie.
Speaker 4 (01:46:41):
Poster, yeah Fast, cars Fast, Girls Fast. CARROTS i knew
where you were going from the first time you said,
Fast Fast carrots the movie poster for Real.
Speaker 5 (01:46:50):
Again that was a seminal. Scene Different, Times Fast.
Speaker 4 (01:46:54):
Times if that movie was, remade since they'd just remake
everything now because Or hollywood and they're, LAZY i don't
EVEN i.
Speaker 5 (01:47:03):
Do think high school movies become harder and harder to
remake because of our age so poorly so. Quickly, well
your life in high school in the eighties is very
different than your life in high, school, Right, okay.
Speaker 4 (01:47:14):
This's WHY i need to, like if they were to
Remake Fast times At Ridgemont, high it would.
Speaker 5 (01:47:18):
Act like that he's out in the garage with his
dad And i'm, curious why'd you call the home. Phone
why don't you just call him on his cell or text?
Speaker 4 (01:47:25):
Him we don't have a.
Speaker 5 (01:47:27):
Landline stop.
Speaker 4 (01:47:28):
Calling, No, like if you were to Remake Fast times
At Ridgemont, HIGH i actually wouldn't have a problem with,
it just purely from the standpoint it would be a new.
Movie everything that happens in that, movie for the most,
part is either completely different, altogether or it would be
looked at, differently OR i mean everything from start to,
(01:47:53):
finish even like At leasture would never come over to
your house and give you tutorial because the cops would
come over. Them what's going on?
Speaker 5 (01:48:00):
Here let's do it the other, way all? Right the
things that are not. Different jefferson really good at, football
got a car from a college that wanted him to play.
Speaker 4 (01:48:10):
There, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:48:10):
Spaccoli really good at smoking, weed and now it's, legal
he would probably would he vape at school or would
he just smoke Because i'm pretty sure there are schools
where there restrooms have a.
Speaker 4 (01:48:23):
Very weed like.
Speaker 5 (01:48:24):
Odor there Was Ridgemont high located in what?
Speaker 4 (01:48:28):
State is?
Speaker 5 (01:48:29):
It?
Speaker 4 (01:48:29):
California, yes, OKAY i mean he was a. Surfer remember
it's The Wild. West, okay it's The Wild, West so
that's the. Same you can pretty much do anything in Caln,
Now i'm this is definitely can happen, Now AND i
don't even think a teacher would get. Upset you just
pick up your celly and you put in your door dash.
Order here comes the. Pizza, yeah totally. Fine and, yeah
(01:48:49):
well and that's after you have gotten in the door
late and SAID i know, that.
Speaker 5 (01:48:53):
Dude, well they do serve. Food you can buy a
bagel and put it in your jeans before you go
to glass.
Speaker 4 (01:48:58):
Like, spacotla and then you don't have anything underneath.
Speaker 5 (01:49:01):
The unbuttoned shirts in a, CLASSROOM i would say that's. Different,
now it's probably not not not. Ideal let's worry about.
Cheating So Pat benattar number one wrote the answers on
her mini under her mini. Skirt just pulled it up
and read those. Off but they were all filling in,
spacoli filling out a. Scantron come on, NOW i asked
(01:49:23):
that question the other day AND i never really got
a good. Answer they. Don't, no they. Don't you got
a good. Answer they don't use, them tells me all the,
time they don't use.
Speaker 4 (01:49:31):
Them she knows.
Speaker 5 (01:49:32):
Things it's a but you mentioned. Computers, well you tests
can be taken on a? Computer is that how everybody
does make scholastic aptitude tests can be taken on a?
Speaker 4 (01:49:40):
Computer? Tablet what an? Overrated, okay, tablets that makes more.
Sense you can't just say computer and that's not, laptop,
right it's a. Tablet, also tablets are available, keyboarder no touch,
screen your favorite touch? Screen all, Right.
Speaker 2 (01:50:00):
Sports talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:50:04):

closer to astros on. Deck we want to give a
shout out to one of our fine teachers here in
the area over At Garfield Elementary. School our teacher of
the day here On Sports talk seven ninety And. iHeartRadio

(01:50:51):
i know many of them out there go above and,
beyond and have begun to go above and, beyond even
just days into this new twenty five six school calendar
that is now.
Speaker 4 (01:51:02):
Underway, teachers, firefighters, cops they should all be like by,
far the highest paid people on the, planet especially in this.
Country but they're. Not and you know, what all teachers
are fantastic obviously for what they, do but special ed
teachers that is as really really fantastic work that they.
Do so, yeah it's a great thing that we got
(01:51:23):
going on, here and it's great that they're being recognized
as we get closer and closer to what has been
a guaranteed victory by my co Host Adam wexler tonight
for the Astrosh.
Speaker 5 (01:51:35):
YEAH i do think The astros are gonna win. TONIGHT
i do Think Hunter brown's gonna pitch well, tonight AND
i think they're gonna find a way to put some
runs on the board like they did in the opener
of this. Series the remember it was just two days
ago they scored seven runs in a game in a
baseball game that counts in the stand, there but it
was just one day ago that they scored one and
gave up. Fourteen, YEAH i don't even really consider, that
but we will prove it during The astros On deck
show that there actually was a run that came. Home
(01:51:56):
it didn't come home until After chas McCormick pitched and
last night, game but it came. Home, nonetheless get you
all the particulars on the. Game, obviously coming up as
we get. You we get you here as part of
the a team into The astros On deck show a
bunch of other things mentioned in one of the storylines
last week in THE, nfl and we got to wait

four games slate will take you Into monday. Night texans

The Carolina. Panthers when The Cleveland browns take the field
for the second time this, preseason they are already In.
Philadelphia they had a joint practice with The eagles in
advance of Their saturday game And Shoulder. SANDERS i think
most of you that have been rolling around on social
media saw that he had an extended conversation With Jalen,
(01:52:59):
hurts you, know to talk quite a. Bit it was
earlier this week where it Appeared Kevin stefanski was ready
to go ahead and, say and he did. Well because
of other issues with our quarterbacks and because of what
we want to continue to see From, Shuder he's gonna
start again our second preseason game WHEN i was before
his oblique, injury which is added To Kenny pickett's, injury
which is added To Dylan gabriel's, injury which is added
(01:53:22):
to the fact that that leaves them with well three other,
quarterbacks one of whom Is Deshaun. Watson he's also hurt
and has been hurt and will remain hurt for the
remainder of the. Season they're all Ready this is the
team we were mocking for having so many. Quarterbacks they
had to Add Scoop huntley because they didn't have enough healthy,
quarterbacks and they still, don't and they're still headed in
(01:53:43):
the wrong. Direction But i'm sure they'll get through their
game with The eagles this, weekend just like everybody else. Will,
honestly it seems like it's almost a given. Now then
when The Cleveland browns take the field as one of
the many teams little more than half the league not
expected to make the, playoffs they're gonna do. So With
Joe flacco starting at quarterback again this? Season how is
(01:54:05):
that even? Possible, LIKE i know how it's.
Speaker 4 (01:54:07):
Possible i'm not actually asking that, question but like it's
the most important position in all of. SPORTS i get
that it's not. Easy franchise quarterbacks don't grow on. Trees
AND i get that you thought you had the one
that you, have uh or the guy that's in that
position right now In Anthony, Richardson but, Like, okay it
doesn't work. Out how is that your best? OPTION i
(01:54:30):
guess is my?
Speaker 5 (01:54:31):
Question, well take it inside THE Afc south to answer that.
Question not The, texans not The, jaguars not The. Titans
how about The Indianapolis. Colts who's your starting? Quarterback now
That Andrew luck's debilitating injuries have sent him to the.
Sidelines they have not had a good answer since that.
(01:54:53):
Day how many more years is it going to? Take,
well but we're almost ten years into that time. Period
don't you look at.
Speaker 4 (01:55:02):
The colts a little bit to the like if you
remember The bulls Before Michael jordan and in large part
Since Michael, jordan they've been pretty much the, same with
the exception of that nice little run that who AM
i try and think of FORMER Mvp Derek. Rose so
(01:55:23):
Before Peyton, manning name the Best colts quarterback that wasn't
in like the.
Speaker 5 (01:55:30):
Sixties, yeah there's no. Question other teams are like. THAT
i think were comparing like eras how teams go, about
how you find. ONE i, mean we're just a couple
of years, removed one off season removed from The Atlanta
falcons trying to find their franchise. Quarterback they found two of.
Them they found a permanent starter who'd started for playoff
(01:55:51):
teams And Kirk, cousins and they found his replacement in
the very same offseason And Michael Pennock. Junior by the,
way there was a fight at The falcons practice. Today
their quarterback was, involved not just for jumping, in but
involved in why it took. Place but my point is
you can't do anything else as a franchise unless you
have a. PLAN i do believe The colts had a
(01:56:13):
plan and it landed in the draft Where Anthony richardson was.
Available when you miss your, host when you miss it
with a big free agent signing your, host That's cleveland With.
Watson but in the case of The, colts that's the
only time they've. Tried that's the only time Since Andrew
luck threw for two, thousand fourth forty five hundred yards
in twenty. Eighteen and then they, said, well we can
(01:56:36):
bring In Jacoby, Brissett, well we can bring In Philip,
rivers we can bring In Carson, wentz we can bring
In Matt, ryan and we can Draft Anthony. Richardson that's
what they've. Done that's their. Plan their plan the first
four years is even worse than their plan was to
Take Anthony. Richardson at least that was they took a
chance on a young quarterback that might be. Great they
(01:56:56):
poorly evaluated what he had and what he did in
college and, thought, well here's our, measurables, big, strong physical,
ball goes. Far i'm. Sold, yeah, No AND i was
big on the.
Speaker 4 (01:57:11):
Guy in, FACT i think at one POINT i uttered
the Sentence i'd like them to take. Him oh, yeah NOT.
Cj stroud EVEN i definitely didn't want him to Take
Bryce Young AND i still. Don't good thing they didn't
and they.
Speaker 5 (01:57:23):
Won't but uh, YEAH i mean In cleveland's the other
team we're talking. About they took a chance on finding
their quarterback and they were. Correct too, bad they didn't
know it and Let Baker mayfield go To tampa in
drafted him with a number one overall.
Speaker 4 (01:57:39):
Pick but If Baker mayfield's still In, cleveland he's not
having success because he.
Speaker 5 (01:57:43):
Just like many people In cleveland that are awful at their,
jobs THE, gm the, coach THE, oc the, line, everybody
that they could have prevented him from being great when
he already had one great season.
Speaker 4 (01:57:57):
There, well, no it's easy to say that in that,
way but those, people those people sound so.
Speaker 5 (01:58:04):
NEGATIVE i don't think if he's not out the door first,
right disagreeing that they don't have bad, people THEN i
still think they have bad people running the. Organization he's,
fine he's a fair head. Coach he's totally ridiculous that
he Won coach of The. Year, uh nice offensive, mind
perfectly fine. Person he's he doesn't move the needle for,
(01:58:26):
me and their gm is is, ACTUALLY i, think pretty.
Good but that's not that doesn't he's too. Good he
did this for them in their uniform in his third,
season and they still couldn't wait to get rid of
him following the next. Season while he played hurt for.
Them they've been bad at quarterback ever, since and he
didn't immediately become great In, tampa he still had that.
(01:58:48):
One we'll call it a gap, year like when you're
you take a trip To europe or something ON i
guess your parents' dime or kind of fish saying hostels.
Whatever it's same as gap, coverage that gap year with
The panthers And, rams and then he landed In. Tampa
you know who has the most touchdown passes in THE
nfl Since Baker mayfield joined The bucks in twenty twenty.
Three Baker mayfield was that on the. Air cool, Now,
(01:59:10):
okay BECAUSE i was in my, ear that's the kind
of THING i would.
Speaker 4 (01:59:13):
Do, well it sounded like something you would.
Speaker 5 (01:59:15):
Do, yeah seventy nine touchdown pass sixty nine touchdown. Passes
nice crushing it all, Right let's get To astros baseball.
Coverage when we come. Back it is the eight Team
Sports talk seven Ninety astros on.
Speaker 4 (01:59:28):
Deck next
Speaker 2 (01:59:31):
The eighteen On Sports talk seven ninety
