Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's two to one here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
It's a Tuesday edition of the A Team WEX over
there ac right here Josh Jordan along for the ride,
as per usual, as we continue on plenty. As we
mentioned almost every Monday these days, especially with what the
Texans have been doing lately, plenty of meat left on
(00:20):
the bone from over the weekend. I don't know what
I've found more fascinating in the now nearly forty eight
hours since the Texans went into Kansas City and beat
the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, first time they've done that
since twenty nineteen. But I don't know if it's more
fascinating to see the love that the Texans have gotten,
(00:41):
which again is a lot, It's abundant. There's been plenty
of both well respected and otherwise people saying as much.
But the way that the Chiefs are being covered in
light of the fact that even though they're not dead,
they are basically dead on arrival when it comes to
their playoff hopes. They're not going to win the Vision.
So that's kind of like this year with the Astros,
(01:04):
you know, after so many years of doing it, but
now like it's gonna take basically an act of Congress
or God himself to get them into the postseason, and
last night probably didn't help their chances either. I guess
in the grand scheme of things, there's no I guess
one hundred percent hurt their chances. Well, I just keep
thinking about the division because when was the last time
we even considered somebody besides the Chiefs to win the
(01:25):
AFC West And now that's already been determined before that
game was even played.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah, Denver has too much of an advantage over the Chiefs,
so their only way was the wildcard, So I only
look at the teams they're likely fighting with. Well, the
Chargers are a wildcard team unless they miraculously win the division. Obviously,
if they do that, the Chiefs aren't passing them. So
a win by the Chargers is not good for the
Kansas City Chiefs. Obviously, what the Chiefs did themselves losing
to a fellow wildcard hopeful in the Texans is not
(01:52):
good for them, And Joe Burrow throwing passes to Buffalo
Bills players for touchdowns when they had the lead is
also not good for good for the Texans either, but
it's definitely not good for the chief Chiefs have six wins.
There's four games left. Everybody ahead of them either has
nine wins or has beaten them or both, and they're
in a very tough spot. So it will be probably
(02:15):
it could be as early as this week, but it
will definitely be sometime soon. When you get to the
part of your conversation here on your sports talk shows,
here and everywhere around the country except for Kansas City,
we won't talk about them at all. They won't matter.
They will be a spoiler. They're playing the Broncos late
in the year. They're playing another team in the race,
and it will impact where that team's playoff seed is.
(02:37):
But the only thing it'll impact for the Kansas City
Chiefs is draft work for the twenty twenty six draft.
Where might they be there? Texans are concerned with the
teams ahead of them. Still, the good news is the
teams ahead of them are like them. They are playoff teams.
All of the teams that could keep them out of
the playoffs have six wins or less except for one,
(02:58):
and that team might be quarterback by Philip Rivers. Indianapolis
Colts are doing the right thing. I think when you
consider who's on their practice squad or available to them
via other teams practice squad at the quarterback position. They
don't have a practice squad quarterback because they had three
quarterbacks on the roster. One of them is technically not
(03:18):
on it because Anthony Richardson went on IR and soon
Daniel Jones will follow. But it is happening. They're signing
Philip Rivers to the practice squad. There's a bunch of
stories behind it that I don't think people even realized
until this started to become a reality, and why it
makes perfect sense, even though it seems crazy that a
forty four year old high school coach is now possibly
(03:39):
playing not only this week, but against the Texans in
a couple of weeks and everybody else in between. It's
all possible, So we'll get into that for sure. But
the Week fourteen finale last night was wildly entertaining for
how wildly poorly each offense was playing a little bit
of credit to the Chargers defense, a little bit of
credit to the Eagles defense, but my goodness, they turned
(04:01):
the ball over a ton. Neither of them could do
anything offensively. The Chargers opened the game with an eighty
yard touchdown drive and they did not visit the end
zone again in a win. Five field goals is what
they got the rest of the way. The last of
those five field goals gave it a three point lead,
and then the last pass of the game they caught
and it was thrown by Jalen Hurts. Four interceptions for
(04:23):
Jalen Hurts part of that wild interception and fumble play
later or earlier in the game. Eagles haven't yet put
the division away. There are four games left for them
to Like everybody else, the Cowboys are just a game
and a half behind them at six six and one,
so there's a lot to play for final four weeks
of the season, as there always will be in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
It's the greatest. It is the greatest it has been.
So we always talk every single year about the parody
in the NFL and how it's unparalleled. But I think
this year is an even bigger example because even though
we always talk about the parody Mary parody I'm referencing
right now, we've never I don't think I can't remember
(05:06):
you or I just since we've been doing this show,
which is since March of twenty nineteen, I don't think
we've ever sat down and said, well, the AFC is
wide open until this year. Can you remember a time
where we said that.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Well, every year we've been doing the show, and every
year for the twenty years prior to that, Peyton Manning,
Tom Brady or Pat Mahomes has been in the AFC.
So it was never wide open. Yeah, Like, I mean simple,
that's as simple as I can put it. I means
not even par effect. No, I mean, I'm being dead serious.
One of those three teams was representing the AFC in
the playoffs every year that Ben Roethlisberger didn't. And then
once you got Joe Burrow in there, and once you
(05:38):
got Joe Flacco in there, I mean, yeah, those are outliers.
Those three games you just favorite aren't gonna win every
single time. Wide open isn't gonna apply. Even in those
years those teams represented the AFC, it wasn't wide open.
They just happened to win it that year. It doesn't
have to be wide open for somebody outside of the Manning,
Brady Mahomes trio to get there. Somebody's gonna get there.
But this is absolutely totally different year. It's been a
(06:01):
long time coming. It didn't appear that it was gonna
arrive this year. It more likely seemed like it was
going to appear after the fourth or fifth season of CJ.
Stroud and Drake May and Bo Nix and Justin Herbert
and the next wave maybe with Joe Burrow still in it,
and that seemed years into the distance. Lamar Jackson's not
about to retire, neither is Pat Mahomes, and neither is
(06:22):
Josh Allen. They just don't any of them happen to
play for the best team or the next best team,
or maybe even the next best team in the AFC
this year.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, it's just crazy to think about. And look, I
don't know if that changes next year. I mean, I
know that Lamar Jackson being healthy and the Ravens ultimately
or inevitably, I guess retooling. It always feels like it's
gonna happen. That's not guaranteed.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
It's not guaranteed, but I think it might be a
little easier if they play a little bit better football
to dominate the Browns, Bengals and yes, the other team
that has Aaron Rodgers on it.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Yes, And as it pertains to the Chiefs, I'll kind
of hold off on this because next segment, I want
to get to something that's hilarious that has come out
of Sunday Nights loss by the Chiefs to the Texans.
It would have come out regardless I think of who
beat them, but the fact that the Texans did a
number on them defensively. I don't know if it exacerbated
this talking point, but I think it's hilarious. And then
(07:21):
Josh Allen, you know, if he doesn't really grab the baton,
because look, this is his postseason to become that guy.
But think about if you thought there were question marks
about he and the Buffalo Bills before, Well, if they
don't win it, and I mean like they have to
come out of the AFC at a minimum in a
(07:43):
year where it's quote wide open, then I don't know
if they're ever going to Because he couldn't beat Mahomes
before that was always the thing. And now you know,
if Mahomes isn't there and they don't somehow make it
out of the AFC when they should clearly be head
and shoulders above everybody else in light of the quarterbacks
we just mentioned and their teams not being a factor,
I mean he's gonna start getting a really bad reputation.
(08:05):
He's going to start getting the reputation that Justin Herbert
should have, but for some reason, nobody gives him.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Yeah, people that want to give Josh Allen a bad
reputation are in my opinion, not paying attention. He doesn't
deserve that. You keep saying he didn't beat them, that's fair.
He plays quarterback. He's been like the best postseason quarterback
this that of Pat Mahomes for five years. Every year
he does it every year. He goes crazy every year.
He puts up points every year. He's incredible. But his
defense can't stop anybody, and they lose to Pat Mahomes
(08:33):
over and over and over again. He's been awesome, awesome
in the postseason. After he opened his postseason career against
the Texans, after that, that was many.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Many years and oh he better hoped he didn't find
them again. Yeah, but that's different. That's more about his performance.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
His performance against them the first time had nothing to
do with their defense and Deshaun Watson and the Texan
beating him that year was a miracle. He was also
a rookie, right, total miracle that the Texans were even
in the game with some of the dumb things that
they were doing in the play I mean, people know
the name Taiwan Jones.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Because they beat the Buffalo Bills in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
But if the playoffs were to begin today, all Buffalo
would have to do to reach the Final four this
year is go to Jacksonville and win, and after that,
who knows are they going to be able to beat
one of the Denver or New England teams? Is one
of those teams gonna get upset and so it's a
different matchup, and maybe they're only playing the Steelers. Say
if the Texans win or you know, there's all sorts
(09:27):
of ways to get in and none of them likely
include going through or having to face Pat Mahomes and
the Chiefs. So, while it's wide open, if you asked
me to plunk down money on a team based solely
on their quarterback in this year's AFC, it's going down
on number seventeen for sure.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Yeah, I think that that would be the smart money.
But then again, that defense isn't any better this year.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
It isn't any better, But they also are the reason
they as much as it sounds ridiculous to say, on
a day they give up thirty two points. If they
don't score touchdown defensively and pickoff passes on back to
back Bengals offensive plays in the second half, they don't
win that game at all. It would have been another man,
Josh Allen. This guy's incredible. If you have him on
your fantasy team, you aren't going to the playoffs. He
(10:12):
had another four touchdown game or five to or six,
whatever the numbers are.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
He was great.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
But their defense can stop anybody, and they really could
not stop the Bengals except for those two passes, and
they turned into Bengals or Bill's points on the second interception,
and the obvious first one was a literal touchdown as
Bernard picked it off and ran it into Benford excuse me,
picked it off and ran it into the end zone.
JJ wattstyle Bengals throwing interception for a touchdown late in
the season.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Crazy to a guy two feet from the quarterback. That
never happens. If only he was wearing ninety nine, we
could have really gone far with this analogy. All right.
That's how you give games away.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
And as much as Joe Burrow has insane talent, it's not.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Just that their defense is bad this year. Yeah, that's true.
There's lots of flaws for lots of teams out there,
and I figure we get into a lot of them
as we continue over the last month of the season.
Mentioned that one of the funniest things, in my opinion,
to come out of the Chiefs losing to the Texans
on Sunday. We'll get to that next. We've got the
(11:13):
best of X this hour. Chandler Rome is gonna check
in from the Winter Meetings coming up at five o'clock,
and a whole lot more as we continue here on
a Tuesday edition of the program twenty to ten. The
final from Sunday night, as the Texans knockoff the Chiefs
(11:35):
keep their little I don't want to call it a
miracle run. I mean they're earning these victories. They're not
like little up and Comerce Summer Cinderella. Their defense has
been legit from day one and it goes back to
the last season. But it is a feel good story
if you want to look at it that way. It's
not so much for the Kansas City Chiefs, and we
can quibble about whether or not the Texans are being
given enough credit versus what the Chiefs did to shoot
(11:58):
themselves in the foot. I think we talked about this
at nauseam yesterday. The broadcast crew, particularly Chris collins Worth
of Sunday Night Football, very much on the side of
what the Chiefs could not do right, or what they
did wrong to shoot themselves in the foot, or the
fact that even though it was completely out of the question,
they were not going to come back in that game
(12:19):
late from two scores with the amount of time that
was left. But I digress. I can't tell you how
hilarious it is to me to open up ESPN, for example,
and see a headline that reads how to fix the
Chief's Offense, and I know what they're trying to get
at without even reading the article. But I cannot in
(12:43):
good conscience sit here and let them get away with
saying how to fix the Chief's offense when Patrick Mahomes
was not only on the field, he was perfectly healthy,
and regardless of whether or not you think he had
good receivers or his best receiver is washed, or whatever
else you want to say, how to fix the Chief's offense,
(13:03):
even if you wanted to say, all right, their offensive
line was beat up, so get healthy, and that's the
fix right there. It's still hilarious to me to have
to fix anything that Pat Mahomes is at the helm
of You said you didn't read it right, right, I'm
just saying the headline because but that's what gets people
in most of the time, how to fix the Chief's offense.
(13:27):
You think their offense is fine. I don't think it's
fine necessarily, but it's finer than like, I don't know
ninety percent of the clubs out there that don't have
Patrick Mahomes as their quarterback.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Well, that's why they write the article, because they do
have Patrick Mahomes and they don't have a good offense. Well,
let me ask you that I haven't read it either,
so I'll ask the question. I get the assumption you
think this is written only because of what everybody watched
on Sunday night. I think they're probably inside the top
ten in scoring. They're barely in the top ten in yards.
(14:02):
Like the Kansas City Chiefs offense with Pat Mahomes doesn't
live here. They do now, and they don't just live
there because of what happened on Sunday. This is the
thirteenth game of the season. It's not a Chiefs can't
do anything against the Texans. Issue is the Chiefs aren't
what they used to be, and that is a huge
issue considering what they've done the last couple of years.
All Right, we're gonna keep paying Chris Jones, he's the
(14:23):
heart of our defense. We're gonna keep paying Travis Kelcey.
He's the other part of our offense that we have
to continue with. They made major changes on the offensive line,
trading Joe Thuni away this past offseason. I don't think
the offensive line has taken such a massive step backwards,
but their performance as an offense for whatever reasons you want,
and I only mentioned Chris Jones from a financial standpoint.
(14:44):
Obviously does not play offense. But it's different. It's dramatically different,
and I do think this is also not the first
year that things have headed in that direction. So why
I brought it up before Sunday's game is why I
brought it up again yesterday, even just looking at Mahomes number,
which is a pretty good way to do it.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
He's the same guy. That's he is the same player.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Like they haven't changed quarterbacks, they haven't changed offenses. They
have changed some of the offensive coaching personnel. Because most
of the best years of the Pat Mahomes led offense
were also when Eric b Enemy was there. Whether or
not you think that's part of it, that's certainly part
of the discussion, but also coach and Aggie was there
both at the beginning and has now since come back
(15:27):
after he failed as.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
A head coach.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
But the Chief's best days on offense have been gone
for trending this way thirty five games, all the way
back to the beginning of last year at least, if
not the year before, and the Texans just punctuated it
by holding him to their lowest point total at home
in the Andy Reid era, and the nineteen point eight
passer rating and all the drops and the worst day
(15:50):
throwing the football he's ever had, and they can't run
the football. All those things were on display for everybody.
So they could have written this article three weeks ago
or ten weeks ago, or during twenty two twenty four,
but now it's right in front of everybody's face.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
You can't ignore it. You can't ignore it now. You
brought up so many of the things that I wanted
to get to here. Who is the who's the quarterback
that Mahomes is most often compared to not necessarily stylistically Brady.
There you go, what was Brady's I mean, after you
got past the accolades and all that kind of stuff,
(16:23):
what's the thing that a lot of people pointed to
deal it with? Anybody? Thank you? Now? Yeah, I knew
that one. Why could he do that? There's a number
of reasons, But what are some of them? What are
the two main ones? Basically one is to God given
talent he had, right? Number two is what it's what
you mentioned about Chris Jones and about the roster itself
financially well, Pat Mahomes I think is an equal to
(16:45):
Brady in that record, because you're kicking the can down
the road.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
On his extension, nowhere near the highest paid quarterback in
the NFL, and pretty much never has been. Even with
the original days of his massive super long term deal.
He had a it's like a five hundred million dollar contract,
but at such a lee and with the guarantees where
they were, he made it easier for them to keep
talent around him.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
How does that, not, ever Brady get brought up when
it always did with Brady? Is it because of the
five hundred million dollar figure that was originally attached to it.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
I think it's because it's not as extreme. I think
people view what he's making is it's more of a
timing issue, like when did he sign his deal, Like
after each of the eight quarterbacks that are in front
of him signed their deal.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
So it's kind of just a part of time.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
But the recognition of what he did, with how he
structured it and how he really wasn't he wasn't really
setting the market even he wasn't even pushing it out
to a level. Brady signed a lot of shorter term
deals that also paid him much lower AAV and maybe
he was at a lower level. But that's that's where
people are kind of torn on what to think about
the Chiefs. Like when we went into the game, I
(17:48):
wasn't saying, man, he has nobody to throw to because
he does Rice, Rashi Rice and Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown.
It's not the best trio in the league. It's more
than enough to work with, win with, dominate with. Even
I mean, it's not really a lack of I don't
think it's a lack of talent. They played very poorly.
Their talent looked like it's very deficient this particular game.
(18:11):
And then their overall output in the fact they don't
run the ball very well. They clearly I think it's
pretty obvious now that you know. They thought they had
to find in Isaiah Pacheco, and I definitely agreed a
late round draft pick that turned into something. But they've
put next to nothing into trying to make their running
game better. I mean, they're just saying, oh, Kareem Hunt,
nobody else is gonna sign him, We'll sign him. He's
been okay, he's very good in short yardage, but they
(18:33):
don't have a good running.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
It's actually insane how close the comparisons are, because that's
another thing you never I don't think Brady ever had
a stud running back his entire career. I'm not saying
he didn't have anybody that wasn't capable, right, but unlike
think of the running back position there, right, Unlike well,
his running backs caught passes. That's true.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Like White was a big pass catcher, James White, Kevin
Fawalk was a big pass catcher. And the reason why
that is is because their run game was the pass game.
Pat Mahone Holmes has led the league in attempts before.
I believe once Brady was consistently near the top of
the league because the running game was the short passing game.
He just I mean, I can't believe how many passes
(19:12):
he was throwing in those days, but those were running
plays for them. Everything was underneath, everything was underneath, and
then Randy Moss would run past everybody, or Gronk would
get in a one on one situation and he could dominate.
And that's also part like the Gronk Kelsey comp if
we want to make it, I think is a pretty
good one to say, well, what did you have? Well,
Brady also had, and he and the offense helped him
(19:33):
make this. They had the number one slot receiver in
the NFL pretty much his entire career. And whether it
was Amondola or Welker or the pretty boy who's best
friends with Julie, it doesn't matter who it was, they're awesome.
And he had Randy Moss for a brief period of time.
And you know, Brandon Cooks is going to turn. I
don't think people think of him this way, but all
(19:53):
he does is you catch a thousand yards Patriot. Yeah,
he was awesome with each of those first a handful
of teams he was with even here in Houston, so
there's been enough talent, but it's definitely noteworthy that they
were able to do that this so far. So far,
the difference has been this year and this year only.
(20:14):
Like all those Brady teams just kept winning the division
and just kept going to the playoffs. We thought Mahomes
was on the very same track. I think we all
picked them to win the division this year, even though
we weren't blinded by fifteen and one with Mahomes last
year they ended fifteen and two.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
He didn't play in the last game.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Knew that the Chargers were better than last year, probably
knew that the Broncos were absolutely in the mix. I mean,
I'll go back and look, but I didn't expect the
Chiefs to be battling to win more than they lose.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
I'm just I mean, I'm kind of skimming as we
go along.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
Here.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
They're talking about the ways to actually fix, like the
actual what you would do. And the first route of
two that they mentioned is one that they described is
the option pioneered by the Bills invest in an under
center running game. Because in the twenty twenty two season,
the Bills ran under center only slightly more frequently than
(21:09):
the Chiefs did, and in each subsequent season, the Bills
have increased their under center rate to the point that
eighty three point four percent of their running back runs
have come from under center this season. And we all
know what they can do. The Texans even know what
they can do in the run game. It's like one
of the only predictable or on course touchdowns they scored
(21:30):
in that game. Dying not to be a jerk here
do it? Do we know who James Cook is? Yeah?
We want to.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
I mean, we can dig into all the other reasons,
but can't we just say James Cook is in Kansas
City's backfield and he's not, or he's in Buffalo's backfield
and he's not in Kansas City's.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
We can quibble about it.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
You should line up under center more, you should do this,
you should run more fullback, or you should have more
twenty one person. You can put all that stuff all
you want. They the Buffalo Bills consistently. It was the
third time in a span of six years they drafted
a running back in the second round, and they just
cycled through them until they landed on James Cook, who
they've now extended because they put asset their asset allocation
(22:11):
into having somebody who could do something with Josh Allen
if Chiefs haven't.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Yeah, well, just to wrap this up, what if I
told you that at the very tail end of this section.
It's almost like a little nugget because you got to
look for it. There are ports they'll say they held
onto Taylor Swift's fiance too long. No, it has nothing
to do with that. It does say that there were
reports out there, whether or not they're true, but that
(22:37):
Brett Veitch could have had Breese Hall for a third rounder,
and if he didn't do that, that is a huge mishap. Yeah.
You again, you look at the rest of your roster.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
How many third, fourth, fifth round picks do you have
in this draft in the next draft, and how much
does it hurt you because you've been so good. That's
all these things being said. They've been a very good
drafting team, I think for some of their needs, and
they have some other issues elsewhere, but they've had so
many finds later in the Pacheco was one, Tray Smith
is another. When you find players in the fifth, sixth,
seventh round, it makes some of the other misses earlier
(23:06):
very inconsequential. Because very few gms can do that first part.
But yeah, just like Houston was three, a third round
pick too much for Houston, should a third round pick
be too much for a Chiefs team that probably saw
the writing on the wall to this is the best
team in the AFC six years running? Can we can
we bleed one more year out of this group just
(23:28):
by maybe fixing the ground game? And I don't know
that he fixes it all by himself, but he's certainly better,
a lot better than anybody they have. Andy's great out
of the backfield catching passes, So that would seem like
an ill advised, oh that's too rich for our blood
type of names by Brett Viach.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
I'm sitting here wishing the Texans had done it too.
Don't don't get me wrong, because the Texans with Breese
Hall are much better than they already are right now?
All right, Well, leave it at that Best of X
coming up next.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
The A one Sports Talk seven ninety All right.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
It is the best of X. It is the time
of year where obviously there's a lot of football conversation,
but and will be the example of this later on
the five o'clock hour. There's plenty of conversation and we
had coming out of the Winter Meetings on the Major
League Baseball side. Normally the hot stove season, which this is,
(24:22):
we saw a lot of activity today, a lot of
money was handed out Astro's front and center in the
middle of it. Normally, not this time. It's just like
a step down.
Speaker 4 (24:32):
What.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
I don't know. I just feel like they're not going
to be well, they haven't.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
Been the biggest players at the Winter Meetings.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
Yeah, but they're just a good team. Yeah, well they
have been. I don't know what they are right now.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
And be honest with you, Philadelphia Phillies shelling out a
bunch of money for the best player in the National League,
most valuable player in the National League that doesn't also pitch.
Kyle Schwarber is returning to the Philadelphia Phillies. New York
Mets just don't have the money anymore. They couldn't afford
to keep Edwin Diaz a their closer twenty three million
per season over three seasons. So that's a contract worth
(25:06):
sixty nine million dollars.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
Nice.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
Edwin Diz is going to close out games if there
are any for the team he's not pitching for in
the National League.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
The Dodgers unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
They had a little bit of money lying around, so
they went ahead and gave it to Edwin Ds, who
has been pretty awesome over the last six plus years.
One of those seasons was missed due to injury, but
he was awesome again last year and he's been extremely
trustworthy as a closer. And clearly their bullpen at large
was one of their biggest issues this season, the only
thing that seemed like it might derail them, but nothing
(25:37):
derail how mighty.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
Dodgers obnoxious will it be to have to watch his
stupid drawn out entrance every single time with now Dodgers
fans cheering him.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
On, Well, you might see it a little bit less,
even though the Dodgers are pretty good, because it's out
on the West Coast and it's kind of somebody else's thing.
I mean, it's kind of the Mets thing. This song
might come with him, but I don't know that it'll
be the same. But general managers meet with the media
and do interviews during the winter meetings. Managers and other
assorted personnel do the same. Players who make their way
(26:09):
to the Winter meetings and Sunny Orlando also end up
on the interview circuit quite obviously, so does the most
powerful agent in baseball an annual visit with the media,
both at the GM meetings and now at the Winter meetings.
And every time I see pictures of it as a
former TV or it pains me that. And I don't
(26:32):
know whose call this is or how hard it is
to get, you know, the departments, the IT department or
your engineers out there, sound engineers. I mean, he does
an interview where it's the biggest crowd. You know, you
see the combine every once in a while where this
player has sixty deep super Bowl Media night, you know,
(26:52):
the quarterback whoever accept at Super Bowl Media Night. When
it's a player or coach that's going to draw that
much attention, well they stick them at a podium. There's
all one mic that he's speaking into. Everybody else is
allowed to if they so choose to plug in, and
Scott Boris is that's who it is at this particular event.
But there's no podium, there's no table, and there's nothing
to plug into, and there's no microphones. You know, everybody
(27:14):
bring your own and do whatever it is you can.
And there are these like I admire the writers for
attempting this. But when you're thirty feet away from him,
and you're standing behind ten people twenty rows deep, and
you hold your micro recorder up in the air, I'm
sure you're getting everything he's saying. It's totally awesome. You're
gonna be able to write some killer articles from that.
(27:36):
But I like watching the pictures because I'm glad I'm
not there. But why do we care here on Best
of X? Because this is when his I'm gonna give
his credit to his team, his scriptwriters, his screenwriters, his
behind the scenes people that help him hash out his puns,
most of which are captured and then posted on social media.
That's why it finds its way too Best of X.
(27:57):
Has anyone ever heard of Tatsuya Emi?
Speaker 1 (28:00):
I think so.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
He throws hard ninety eight ninety nine miles an hours,
a twenty seven year old. He is in the Boris
Corp Fold.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
He spoke about him today, and only the punny way
that Scott Boris can wake.
Speaker 5 (28:12):
You have a twenty seven year old pitcher who throws.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Ninety eight ninety nine.
Speaker 5 (28:20):
You know, teams look at that and say, you know that.
Believe me, in my wildest dreams, I never expected someone
to be available like that.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Not his finest work, took him a while to get there, delivered,
delivered it cleanly and clever like Arizona Diamondback's last trade
deadline had a couple of pictures that looked like they
might get moved, and honestly, I thought it was Zach
Allen that would get moved. He's a Boris Corp. Client.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
He ends up hitting free agency off a less than
stellar season a year ago, but a lot of interest
in him. If you missed it, it didn't make its
way to Best of X but or Over the weekend,
Bob Nightingale reported Zach Gallen working towards a deal with
the Chicago Cubs.
Speaker 1 (29:08):
Deal not final yet, but headed that way.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Less than five minutes later, a Jeff Passon posted there's
no deal between the Cubs and pass and there's nothing
imminent either. It was hilarious, But Zach Gallon is a
Boris client. His last name is Gallen.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Let's go.
Speaker 5 (29:24):
I think for Zack, it's high quality, never crude, always refined,
and when you pull up to the pitching pump, you
know a Gallon is always premium. So he's exactly a
rotation fit.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
No doubt always premium. You know, I just this guy
who I don't want to say he ruins franchises. He
does drive the price up for everybody involved. Does he
think this makes him more endearing or less hateable? Oh
my god, Oh my god, Scott Boris is talking. We
gotta get over there. What part of the hotel is he?
And where do we go? How early should we get there?
(30:00):
We gotta have it, gotta have it, gotta have it,
That's what everybody does. I'm not this isn't a personal
attack at you for this segment, but I could literally
go the rest of my life with never hearing from
Scott Boris and be fine.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
Who's the picture you wanted most this offseason? And free
agent Rangerrez, who is.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
Just has had postseason xcellence of you know, one four
era slow heartbeat big markets, having that kind of experience
and having that so in the postseason when you add
a Suarez, I think everyone knows you're you know you're
armed in Rangeris without a doubt.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
Oh my gosh, you're armed and rangerous. Is Chandler standing
there rolling his eyes.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
I don't believe he was close enough to gather at
any of this audio here and word for word until
after the fact. But we can talk to him about
that at five o'clock.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Armed in rangeris.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
Who's one of the more notable former astros to leave
the team and sign elsewhere as a Boris client.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
And he's currently a free agent, Alex Bregman. I think
everyone is aware that.
Speaker 5 (31:13):
The Bragman is something special and different other than his performance.
He's you know, he's you're talking one of the few
regular everyday players that has eight consecutive postseason appearances. So
you know, in October, it's Alex in Wonderland and it's a.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Really a Brigley scheduled event, no doubt. Regularly, I can't
even say it, neither could he Toba.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
It's Alex in Wonderland and it's a really a Brigley scheduled.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Event, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
How many times has Alex done that awkward laugh at
something Boris has said? Boris knows clearly he's giving him
a courtesy laugh.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
I think everyone knows you're you know, you're armed and ragerous,
without a doubt.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
This guy best of X finest moments, better writers, with
some of the commissions he's made.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
Now, I didn't even grab audio from all of them.
So I'll leave you with this from best of X.
Yankee outfielder, first baseman, who's in free agency this year?
Speaker 1 (32:23):
Who would that be? Uh Yankee outfielder free former Dodger,
former cub oh Bellinger likes four to twenty.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
This is what his agent, Scott Boris, had to say
about him today. A lot of people are wondering what
teams are interested, right, so he answered this lustly. It's
not for me to judge great players see red if
they have a big bat yanked out of their lineup.
I haven't met a team that dodges a five tool
(32:51):
player to fill the center field need is a giant
step towards the playoffs. In the offseason, there's a lot
of startups organizations for that reason. There's a lot of
Angel investors that are looking for very versatile outfielders. He
would have been according to the Boris puns, the Mets, Dodgers, Reds,
Giants and Angels are interested in bringing in the outfielder.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
He would have been Brick, Tamblin and Anchorman. Absolutely, where
did you get your clothes at the toilet store? Here
you have it, Best of X. We love you Buddy
Hocky Hour. Here it is the eight Teams Sports Talk
seven to ninety. Hey, Wax, you remember when the Texans
had like the best team they ever had, and then
(33:37):
their quarterback got hurt, and then we were looking at
TJ yats and playoff games and wishing that the entire
team didn't feel like they were playing with one hand
tied behind their back collectively. I remember, do you remember
all of the quarterbacks that came and went during that season?
Speaker 2 (33:56):
I remember the half of football that was that the
year that Matt Lioner was out there for half a year.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
Well he keeping half a game. I'm sorry. Keep going
and naming them all if you can. What year are
you're talking about? Well, I could be getting this mixed
up with the year. I think there's a little crossover
with some of these seasons. But you mentioned was twenty eleven, Yeah,
and that was when TJ finished out the year and
they went to the postseason. Twenty twelve was the following year.
It was just SHAWB and TJ. But when did we
(34:23):
see the likes of Liner? That was twenty eleven. Yeah,
that was twenty eleven and got hurt. Jeff Garcia never
played in a game though he was in the locker
room and was issued at uniform and attended practices and games.
He just did not play. But it wasn't that the
same year?
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (34:39):
Why were they bringing all those in again? Injuries? Yeah,
but Shab got hurt, Liner got hurt, Yates got hurt. Okay,
I thought Yates might have gotten hurt. He had to
have like that was that guy. That's why Jake played, right,
I remember that. Didn't Rex Ryan come in? Not Rex Ryan,
Rex Grossman come in? Just not that year? It was it? Okay,
(35:00):
it was all I mean, man, Shob, you couldn't have
just not broken your liz frog because that's what it was.
We would have never seen him on a scooter if
that had happened. I was just about to say, that's
when you knew.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Not a scooter where you put a helmet on and
it has a motor and you put gas in it.
Not a segue a scooter where you walk with one leg.
You put your knee on the pad of the scooter
and you push it along with you as you make
your way from one end of the locker room all
the way to the other end of the locker room.
Locker room with the quarterbacks hang out. Now there were
doors on both ends, but most everybody, especially once the
(35:32):
media had already arrived in there awaiting them. Because we
talked to the players in the locker room a little
bit more often then than we do now, a more
time spent in there. They would all come in the
same way, and quarterbacks were at one end. Wide receivers
were at that end, but on the opposite side of
the locker room. That's honestly, that's the same way it
was for Dom to Gary, to Wait to Bill and
(35:55):
every coach in between, and then Dimico got here. Obviously
they've redone the locker room also, but there's no sections.
The dbs aren't here, and the des aren't there, and
the quarterbacks aren't there, and the old line isn't here.
Everybody's mixed up all over the place in the locker
room by design. It was something that Demiko felt benefited
the chemistry and culture of the entire football team. I
(36:18):
tend to agree, But yes, you were talking about all
the quarterbacks the Texans had to go through in a
year where otherwise bigger things might have occurred. They went
ten and six In twenty eleven, they went twelve and
four in twenty thirteen. As they were making their way
through all of that, it all kind of came to
a crashing end in twenty thirteen.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
So I know it's not as many names that we
just rattled off, but the Colts bringing in Philip Rivers,
it begs the question which quarterback situation is going to
look at It's going to be looked at more in
hindsight as completely appalling. Well, these are the guys that
(36:58):
are actually getting reps out there.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
I mean they have had their first two guys go down,
and that's where every team is. If your first two
quarterbacks are out, you're curse worded. Yes, So that's where
they are. Like, do you think Philip.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
Rivers is lining up under center against the Texans in
the final week of the year.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
Not if he lines up this week, the next week,
and the next week, because it'll be hurt by then.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Now let's again, if you're unaware Anthony Richardson is unavailable
because he has still is dealing with the eye injury
suffered pregame several weeks ago. A stretch band. It hit
him in the face. It hit him in the eye.
He needs surgery for this. It was a very serious
and unfortunate injury that he obviously has been away from
the practice field and on ir because of so he's
(37:43):
not who they go to.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
Daniel Jones has not.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
Taken one hundred percent of the reps the last couple
of weeks in practice, so Riley Leonard, the rookie from
Notre Dame, is getting them. And this week when he
tore his achilles, Riley Leonard came into the game, played
out throughout the game, came to them on Monday morning
with some injury issues, some sorenas, some knee issues that
they were unaware of. They would have looked to add
a quarterback regardless, but his situation isn't one hundred percent
(38:10):
health and as we've learned over the course of the
last twenty four hours, So the reports first came out
last night that this was a possibility, and some people
who know a little bit more about Philip Rivers recently
kind of shed some light on the situations. We get
to the top of the three o'clock hour, we'll shed
some light on why this actually makes sense for the
(38:30):
Indianapolis Colts to go in this direction, to consider a
forty four year old father of insert whatever number you
think it is. I think it's actually nine. Oh my god,
who s the last four years? I think there is
a child under four. I think there's one that would
be the one that wouldn't be the one.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
Oh man, it was so much fun while I was retired.
Not sure if there are others.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
But it's a high school football coach too, Philip Rivers,
So a little bit of light on that situation. We're
now ready to look ahead to the upcoming week. We
got a game in two days Thursday night, and the
rest of the week fifteen schedule. It's another monster weekend
Texans Cardinals, not really in that group, but several other
games humongous shifters in the playoff picture.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
We've been at all those things. As we hit the
three o'clock, our next welcome in to our number two
here on the A Team Sports Talk seven to ninety
and our number one on Space City Home Network simulcast
is underway. As we are one hour into the show.
We'll take you up until six o'clock tonight. Five o'clock hour,
we are gonna have Chandler Rome stop by via the
phone lines from the winter meetings have all things astros
(39:36):
in Major League Baseball related to discuss with him. And
we have been talking at nauseum as per usual about
your Houston Texans. Who are They are the bee's knees
right now? They are the cows? What is it? The
cats meow? Not the cows meow, they're the cats mew.
When it comes to talking about defenses around the NFL
(39:57):
and where they stack up and how far that's gonna
take them, not everybody is convinced they're going to make
all that much damage, though, So we'll get into that
a little bit. There's also a very very fantastic anniversary
we'll get to this hour when it comes to Houston
sports history here on December ninth. So start scratching your
brains if you don't know what I'm talking about. But
(40:17):
we were talking about Philip Rivers last hour at the
very tail end of things. He just had his forty
fourth birthday yesterday, and there is a very real possibility
that he could be starting for the Colts, maybe even
against the Houston Texans.
Speaker 2 (40:31):
Yeah, that game's a couple of weeks away. He could
even start this weekend for the Indianapolis Colts. Fix on
one thing that was said last segment. He did have
nine children before he had his tenth child that was
the one that is the only one that has been
born since retirement. So he was busy at North Carolina State,
as busy as he was with the Chargers and Colts
before that, and as busy as he was when he
(40:53):
was coaching high school football in the years that have followed.
He is also a grandfather. I'm not sure everybody is
aware of that, but his eldest child child has had
a child, So in twenty twenty four, he and the
missus became grandparents. So there's a possibility that Grandpa Rivers,
one of them his dad, also a grandfather many times over,
(41:13):
could be playing in the NFL this year, but I'm
sure there will have plenty of needs in the stadium
for all right, are you ready?
Speaker 1 (41:24):
All right?
Speaker 2 (41:24):
Here are all the kids for Tiffany and Philip Rivers.
There's Hallie that's the one who has a child and
has made him and his wife grandparents. Caroline Grace Gunner,
Sarah Peter, Rebecca, Claire Anna, and most recently in twenty
(41:46):
twenty three, Andrew child number ten.
Speaker 1 (41:48):
So by my count, there as you were rattling them off.
Clearly they were going for the boy on number four
and they got it, and then they were like, we're
not done. We could get more boys, and two kids
later they got their second and now they have three
total boys to go against all of these girls.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
If they were wanting to field a team with Philip
at quarterback, all set the other active. The other ten
spots are now accounted for varying ages.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
But a bunch of people talked.
Speaker 2 (42:18):
About why this is actually happening, why this is the fit,
because it's been reported and I don't doubt it over
the last three or four years since his retirement almost
eighteen hundred days ago, the teams continue to reach out.
I mean, Matt Ryan's on TV every week on CBS,
and closer to his own retirement, he had mentioned the
very same thing. Teams still call and wonder can you
do this? Have you been doing that? Could you come back?
(42:39):
Is there a possibility because most teams don't want to
turn to their developmental quarterback. The Colts do have a
quarterback on their practice squad, Brett Ripian, who does have
a little bit of NFL experience, but this might be
a better option for It's definitely a good option to
have in the quarterback room. Now, the Texans have played
that game many times before. They've just brought people in
(43:02):
that would make sense for the other quarterbacks that are
on the roster to have around. He and Shane Steiken
apparently have stating contract contact over the years. He just
kind of happened to be the Colts coach because the
two worked together with the Chargers. Shane Steiken's coaching tree
took him through the Chargers when Philip Rivers was the
quarterback there, and obviously this is the OC for the
(43:24):
Eagles and now the OC and play caller and head
coach of the Colts. So they had a pre existing
relationship which essentially just continued. And JJ Watt, who only
knows this because he's in TV now, cited a production
meeting where he learned that the offense that Philip Rivers
high school team with Rivers kids on it, run the
(43:46):
Colts offense. So he's teaching the Colts offense to the
high school football team that he coaches.
Speaker 1 (43:52):
What a surreal storyline. So suddenly he.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
Has pretty good knowledge. Since they continue, he and Shane
continued to talk throughout this season and in previous seasons
about what the Colts like to do offensively, So whether
he is there to help Riley Leonard or to show
him how to run the offense while Riley continues to
be the backup, it does make some sense if Philip
(44:16):
Rivers still has anything left in an extremely used right
arm and shoulder. For those that have forgotten how much
work he put in to his NFL career, just from
a usage standpoint, longtime quarterback lots who are the awesome
with a ground game? For the Chargers was always I
(44:37):
mean they have running backs, I mean other than him, obviously,
And that's I shouldn't say it in that way, Okay,
I should say just look at what he's done, and
all these Hall of Fame quarterbacks are sitting there on
all the lists that he's on. I don't think he
is a Hall of Famer personally, but he has similar
numbers to all of these guys that threw their arms off.
Speaker 1 (44:58):
Basically, what did what? How much? How many yards? He passed?
Four total? Why don't you guess fifty two? Let's get
let's go bigger than that. Well he's not sixty, yes
he is? Is he really? Yes? Sixty three thousand? Okay,
I could I should have guessed. See, for some reason,
(45:19):
I just thought I would have heard more about it,
and I probably didn't forgot. I just have Stafford on
the brain because he just eclipsed that.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
Point thirteenth all time and attempts sixteenth all time in completions. Yeah,
it's one thing to have all those attempts, excuse me,
ninth and tenth in those categories respectively, So top ten.
Speaker 1 (45:37):
Geez, you don't think he's all a famer? What do
you like about what he did?
Speaker 3 (45:43):
Well?
Speaker 1 (45:43):
He nemb won? Okay then, but okay, is that gonna keep?
If Josh Allen keeps going like this, he'll be similar.
Speaker 3 (45:51):
I don't know the.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
Answer yet, but I'm about to look. Okay.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
My guess is Josh Allen not only has more playoff
wins than Rivers, but ugnificantly more.
Speaker 1 (46:02):
He won. He would just always win in the first round,
would he not.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
He did win in the first round the first of
his games four times, and then he once won a
second game. Josh Allen has seven playoff victories as a
starting quarterback. Philip Rivers has five and Justin Herbert has zero.
Just want to throw that out there, Yeah, if Philip
Rivers gets the Colts to the postseason. He will have
the third most wins of any starting quarterback in the
(46:28):
AFC postseason. Rogers will be one, presumably if he makes it.
Josh Allen would be two, Rivers would be three, geez,
and CJ would be fourth.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
Interesting, I didn't hear Herbert's name because he would not
be first, second, third, or fourth or fifth or sixth
or seventh. He'd be in dead place.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
He would I think he would technically be fifth or sixth,
a tie with Drake May. Drake May, they both would
have zero and with Bonnicks. Bonicks made the playoffs last
but did not win their game.
Speaker 1 (47:01):
Okay, well, look, I uh, I don't know what they're
supposed to do, and we make fun and all that
because he just turned forty four and everything, But finding
a guy who at least knows what to do as
an NFL quarterback and has been in that building? Are
(47:22):
there a worse options?
Speaker 2 (47:24):
I was in the building before anybody that matters was
in it. Yes, coach, wasn't there these players basically.
Speaker 1 (47:30):
Outside the building again, Oh my gosh, because they would
still have to Who are they getting that's going to
be a better option than Philip.
Speaker 2 (47:39):
If you're act Yeah, they're not. This is not a
this is not awful. This is where we are in
the season. Obviously, there's no trades available at this point
in the season.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
This is dire straits.
Speaker 2 (47:47):
Your your third quarter. The Texans third quarterback is Graham Mertz.
Mm hmm, this is the The Colts third quarterback is
Riley Leonard. They're on their phones.
Speaker 1 (47:55):
Would be like if Graham Mertz got hurt after replacing
why am I, oh, Davis Mill Sorry? Yes, this is
that we which you know, organizations there on the fly.
But yeah, I just I don't think it's the worst idea.
I don't think it's gonna go well.
Speaker 2 (48:13):
I mean, he will be with them because he worked
out last night, so presumably he is available to practice
Wednesday Thursday.
Speaker 1 (48:19):
For about the fact that he was in shape enough
to sign, that's I mean, there's thinking that you might
be called, and then there's this there's no way. I mean,
when's the last time he played for them? Twenty twenty one?
Oh for them? Yes, So I mean come on, like,
well that was his last year. I shouldn't as say
that like that somewhat impressive that he's just been coaching
(48:42):
and is still in good enough shape to where they
were like, we'll put you on the practice squad. Is
you be drawn checks.
Speaker 2 (48:49):
Very very non lucrative ones until he gets on the
active roster. Well, he doesn't even have to be. I mean,
they could honestly elevate him this week if they wanted
to do what typical guy at the quarterback position get.
If it was to say he wasn't Philip Rivers. I
guess it doesn't. It wouldn't matter.
Speaker 1 (49:03):
He's signing a practice squad quality contract. What do they get?
Speaker 2 (49:07):
I mean, it's you'd probably now look at it more
on the weekly basis. I mean, I think it's in
the neighborhood of one hundred and change for the season.
I can't remember exactly where the figures are for a
practice squad players.
Speaker 1 (49:17):
Could you imagine it just one hundred grand just to be.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
A practice again, I don't know what the numbers would
be for the pro rated portion of a four week
stint on a practice right.
Speaker 1 (49:28):
But then say he gets signed and plays, which he will,
then what is he making? What's the VET minimum? That's
probably what he would make, Yeah, which is what a million?
I mean, I guess he could negotiate his way to
a bigger deal. But like, how desperate are you guys,
and what's your better option? How do many need more?
Speaker 6 (49:44):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (49:44):
We watch take cards, man, I want you to play
Riley Leonard first, then we can negotiation.
Speaker 1 (49:50):
I mean, unlike Latrelle's spree, well when he says I've
got to feed my family, it actually kind of is
a thing.
Speaker 2 (49:56):
Yeah, because he only made eleventy billion dollars as an
NFL player was still and Chrell didn't have twelve shod
This to the other part of why Rivers also make sense.
Philip Rivers worked with Riley Leonard during the draft process.
They have a pre existing football related relationship and personal relationship,
so these are all good things for either Rivers plays
(50:18):
or Leonard plays. I mean, it's sad and weird and
crazy as it seems, it actually makes perfect sense until
we go out there and see him and The first
opponent for the Colts this weekend is the Seattle Seahawks.
Speaker 1 (50:31):
I wouldn't suggest playing forty four year old Philip Rivers
against this Texans pass rush, but that's just me.
Speaker 2 (50:36):
Well, it's always away last game of the season. What's
their record? Well, the Texans will be playing for something though,
but the Colts probably won't be. I mean, you have
to have somebody healthy to call plays and throw the
ball rip. Oh my gosh, all right, how far can
the Texans offense take them? We'll hear from Demiico Ryans
on that, plus the more trendy of the two remaining
(50:59):
content for the AFC South Crown. Next he is the
eight team Sports Talks seven to ninety Space City Home Network.
All right, so we've been talking about Philip Rivers because
we live in bizarro world. Apparently forty four year old
Philip Rivers is now on the practice squad for the Colts,
who still are on the Texans schedule. And the interesting
(51:23):
thing about that, by the way, is you were talking
about all the running backs, primarily lt that he handed
off to over the years at times when he wasn't throwing.
Speaker 1 (51:30):
The ball so many times. But at least he'll have
a fantastic running back to turn around and hand the
ball off too once he gets in there.
Speaker 2 (51:40):
Once he gets back there, I mean, Taylor's probably a
good five or six yards behind him at the snap,
so it could be a while because.
Speaker 1 (51:46):
He's slow and old. He's had a slow and old joke.
It is, okay. I mean he's got Boris over there.
When he was young, yeah, I would still use the
first word. Also, he was slow and young. Yeah, he
was slow and young and now and I'll give a
credit for this, I would say this about him.
Speaker 2 (52:02):
He is the best quarterback probably ever with the least mobility.
Speaker 1 (52:10):
Drew Bloodsoe's in that conversation.
Speaker 2 (52:12):
I mean, you're going down pretty far on the list
because Bledsoe is not among the crew. I'm just trying
to think of immobile quarterbacks who was probably more mobile
than Philip Rivers. And he hardly even moved around in
the pocket either. I mean he literally just hung out.
He was the least mobile quarterback ever.
Speaker 1 (52:26):
That was good.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
I mean he's Marino would certainly fit in this very
same thing, and that's probably would make my previous comment
moot Aventura. I mean, I guess I'm not I mean,
I don't know. I shouldn't be forgetting about Marino and
honestly LT from last segment, but yeah, that was that
was pretty cru Philip Rivers is awful when it comes
to movie literally moving. But again, you didn't have to
(52:50):
move back in that era. You need to stand in
there and pick defenses apart in the regular season. I'm
currently crafting a no he's not.
Speaker 1 (52:56):
A Hall of Famer post right now, Oh man, a
little bit to distracted. Okay, No, it's no problem speaking
of awful. Since you just used that term, would you
use that to describe the Texans offense at times this season?
For sure? Okay, Well, I'm glad you. I'm glad you
agree because Demiko Ryans was talking about the fact that
(53:18):
the offense does have things to work on. The defense
gets all the press as well they should, but the
offense can maybe do something here. Demiko Ryans on that
very Texans offense.
Speaker 7 (53:30):
Well, there are a lot of things offensively I think
we have to approve upon, specifically in the half and
coming out at the second. At the second the beginning
of the second half is not good enough for us.
We got to move the ball better in those situations,
all right. Then when it comes to the pressures, there's
things to learn from.
Speaker 1 (53:48):
We got to operate much faster with.
Speaker 7 (53:51):
Just the timing of everything, getting the play calls in
and out of the huddle, getting the line properly, making
the right id, getting guys picked up the way we
have to operate more efficiently. We have to operate with
much more urgency on the offensive side on the football.
You'll continue to see those type of pressures right that
that showed up.
Speaker 1 (54:10):
So there's a lot of.
Speaker 7 (54:11):
Room for improvement there and we have to see that
improvement very quickly.
Speaker 1 (54:16):
I mean, it's it sounds simple on paper, and the
way he phrases it there.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
It also sounds like something he could have said after
the Rams, Bucks, Jags, Titans, Ravens or all the games
since Week five.
Speaker 1 (54:28):
Mm hm.
Speaker 2 (54:29):
They just haven't made they haven't. They clearly have done
some things personnel wise they give them a better chance
on the offensive line. They also have continuity on the
offensive line. Hopefully those two things together bode well. But
what he was specifically talking about coming out of this
last game and in previous games, teams have your weaknesses
(54:49):
on film each week, and that's why you keep seeing
them as harder to overcome each week because every team
sees it. Okay, well, now this isn't what we do,
but we know you can't stop it, so we're gonna
do that. And that's what each team did all throughout
last year. And I think you're seeing a little bit
of it this year. I think you saw a lot
of it actually against Kansas City, and maybe more so
(55:10):
than against some of their previous opponents and the offensive line,
which I do think they do have the five best
guys out there. This is the first time with that
group out there where I really thought they made a
handful of mistakes. But it really wasn't because of the
exotic nature of the blitz. It was just because they
were they got themselves out of position with their technique
and with their hand play.
Speaker 1 (55:29):
They were just getting worked just with their hands.
Speaker 2 (55:31):
They would put their hands up to you lock up
their blocking assignment, and they would get slapped away and
off balance and right up that hole would the rusher go.
But until all that stuff gets super cleaned up, and
until they don't have again, it all starts with the
same thing on the offense, and it didn't. It's not
the only reason. It slows them down, and they weren't
(55:51):
forced to punt every time they had one of these penalties.
Speaker 1 (55:54):
But it's okay.
Speaker 2 (55:55):
I don't mind when teams hold, I don't mind when
teams illegal hands to the you know all that stuff.
I think it's incredible how many times is we get
to the fifteenth week of the season, they don't line
up correctly. I mean, it can't stay on side. They
have false starts. I'm appalled by it, as I'm sure
they are, and it should just shouldn't be a part
(56:18):
of who you are when you're a good team. The
bad teams do that. The bad teams have trouble with alignment.
The bad teams are playing too many young players to
overcome it. And granted, all they talked for everybody this
year is why won't you play this guy and that
guy and this guy? Well, most snaps in the last
three weeks have been with at least three rookies on
the field Higgins, Marks and Nursery, and Knowle's been on
(56:40):
the field a little bit more. There was actually fifty
to fifty split between Christian Kirk and Jalen Knowle this
past week, and a lot of the mistakes this is
where they're being made. I know Kate Stover's not a rookie,
but he's also missed more time than he's been out
there for the last two years, and so some of
the alignment issues, the shifts and formations that they've been
penalized before pre snap been involved in that too. They
(57:02):
wipe those clean one per every three games, not one
every half of every game, and you'll be in a
lot better situation because you're not gifting the defense. Awesome,
we get to pin our AARs back. Awesome, we know
what's coming. Their playbook just got smaller because it's third
and fifteen, it's second and fifteen, it's first and twenty.
You're not gonna have a pre snap penalty that makes
(57:23):
it first and twenty.
Speaker 1 (57:24):
But you get my drift, all right, So as it
pertains to what the Texans can or can't do on offense,
and we know what they can do defensively and all
that kind of stuff. By the way, there's some hot
takes on the defense of the Texans that we'll get
to in some coming segments here today. But I wanted
to ask this question because the Texans defense, they're the
darlings of the NFL right now and rightfully so. They
(57:46):
are a big reason why this five game winning streak
is where it's at. Who it's been against, the quarterbacks,
they're in all that kind of stuff. The Jags are
getting some love too, and so I asked the question,
who's the more trend the AFC South team right now
because they're both getting a lot of love. And that
same article that was entitled how to fix the Chiefs offense,
(58:11):
there's also one that says the Jags are the team
to watch in the AFC, not the AFC South, the AFC,
which is also funny to me. It gives plenty of
love to the Texans back to back road wins against
the Colts and Chiefs powered by an elite defense that
the Texans firmly as AFC contenders. No, they're not guaranteed
to make the playoffs. Yes, they play most of their
(58:31):
postseason games on the road if they do make it,
unless they win the division. But that defense can be
anybody sleep with one eye open if they're on your schedule.
Then he's talking about the Jags and talking about the
fact that since their Week eight by their five to one,
and that their only loss was to the Texans Davis
Mills in an end of game collapse so spectacular it
(58:55):
can only be described as Jags in. But in that
six game stretch, the offense is sixth in success rate,
fifth in points per drive, and thirteenth in EPA per play.
Their defense is thirteenth in success rate seventh in points
per drive and seventh in EPA. To their credit here
(59:18):
because it says quite simply they've been good. To their credit.
The very next paragraph talks about how they have played
the Raiders, the Chargers, the Cardinals, Titans, and Colts in
addition to the Texans, And we talked about Colts.
Speaker 2 (59:31):
Was the majority of the game was played without Daniel
You're right, although they were ahead when he got hurt. Yeah,
but at least they're honest about this. Well, the who's
what was? How did they phrase? Who's the team you
least want to play? What was the phrase they use?
Who's the series to sleep on? Sleep with one eye
open if you the Texans are on your schedule. Well
what they say about I meant about the Jaguars.
Speaker 1 (59:51):
Oh, just that they they are a team to watch, basically,
the team to watch in the AFC.
Speaker 2 (59:58):
The team to watch in the af That's good enough
for me to rip apart. I like that the team
to watch in the AFC is the nine and four Jaguars,
not the eleven and two Patriots who have won ten
in a row, Not the eleven and two Broncos who've
won ten in a row, Not the eight and five
Texans who've won five in a row, including their only
matchup against Jacksonville.
Speaker 1 (01:00:18):
Not the team with Josh Allen. The Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
They are a team to are a team to watch
because they will be one of the teams in the playoffs,
But they're not the team to watch for. They're just
in the playoffs. I don't want to crap on them
like this, but what I just told you is, how
could anybody? I guess it just says the AFC is
wide open.
Speaker 1 (01:00:40):
I'll be nice. That's all they're saying. We're gonna learn
a lot about the Jags in two Sundays when they
face the eleven and two Broncos in Denver. There you go.
The Jaguars can fall to an excellent Broncos team and
still prove to me they're legit as an AFC contender,
much in the way the Bears recent games against the
Eagles and Passers proved why they belong in the NFC race.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
I thought they just lost kind of. I mean, I
was a close game, but I okay. But yeah, I'll
give the Jaguars way away out the door. There are
only two teams with more takeaways than Houston in the AFC,
and the Jaguars.
Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
Are one of them. They're all the rage. Given their
five game winning streak and primetime victories over the Bills
and Chiefs. All of their flowers are deserved. I'm in
awe and terrified of them. I'm not terrified of the
Jacksonville Jaguars.

in Houston sports history coming up next. But I gotta
(01:07:25):
tell you before we get to CJ. Stroud conversation. Here
the love that I already had, and then it went
to the next level for Jalen Petrie after that hit
on Rashid Rice the other night. I said this the
other day. If I could get a I'm trying to
think of what I have. If I could get a
(01:07:45):
Jalen Peatrie jersey to wear on the air here, I
would do it instantaneously right now after that hit, just
based on the one hit, Like he's been awesome. He's
a great interview off the air or off the field.
I should say all that kind of stuff. But when
you light up a guy, especially a guy like Rashi Rice,
I'm like a fan for life. You wouldn't get a
(01:08:07):
Jalen Peatrie jersey wex and wear it here on the show.
I believe the only Texans jerseys that I have. You
have a Hammy Ryans rebock from two thousand and six,
don't you.
Speaker 10 (01:08:17):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:08:18):
The only Texans jerseys I have were all given to me. Well,
Justin James gave you one, because he gave one to
everybody in the city except for me. Summ I did
cover him at one point. Yeah, I have one of those.
Everybody got one.
Speaker 2 (01:08:33):
I think the last year ago, two years ago, maybe
the Texans had their color Rush jersey maybe was unveiled.
Speaker 1 (01:08:41):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:08:41):
I think they gave those out, and I do know
there is one in my Actually, there's two others in
my closet. I'm pretty sure there's a Texans thirty two
jersey from when they were the NFL's thirty second team.
Speaker 1 (01:08:54):
That's definitely a Rebok.
Speaker 2 (01:08:56):
It's definitely a Rebok. And I think there's a number
of red number eight Dave car jersey in there somewhere.
Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
Teresa has purchased a Rebok fifty nine Tomiko Ryan's jersey,
I'm pretty sure from her like first few days here
in Houston, which she got here in four nice. So
the franchise was still in its infancy, the Dominator was
still the coach, Demiko was bald Well.
Speaker 21 (01:09:19):
He was.
Speaker 1 (01:09:19):
Yeah, ever since not high school, basically is he's never
had the hair.
Speaker 2 (01:09:24):
Petrie is a popular purchase. It's a jersey frequently seen
on my walk into the stadium. Yeah, yeah, I think
I think I want to get a white one. I'm
gonna get that. I'm gonna make that purchase here in
the coming days.
Speaker 1 (01:09:35):
All right, speaking of him, let's give some love for
Jalen Petrie from his head coach, because he was one
of many we talked about yesterday. Probably could point to
twenty different individual plays just in that game against the
Chiefs where a player on the defensive side of the
ball came through with just an insane play. But that's
(01:09:55):
the one that's getting the most love, that's the one
that's getting the most talked about, just because of the
fur rosity of the hit. And Demiko Ryans had thoughts
on his safety.
Speaker 7 (01:10:04):
Jalen Peatree, Yeah, Jayla has been a smart, trustworthy player
for us, whatever asked of him. You know, he's willing
and acceptable of whatever role.
Speaker 19 (01:10:13):
That is.
Speaker 7 (01:10:14):
Is a guy who truly just wants to help the
team in any way. Unselfish guy, great teammate, great leader.
He's just really been a great player for us.
Speaker 1 (01:10:24):
It's kind of crazy when you think about all of
these players being as young as they are being for
the most part drafted. I know Daniel Hunter was a
Marquis free agent signing. But the key components of this defense,
and there's I mean up and down that rud whatever position.
Out of the eleven you want to talk about the starters,
(01:10:44):
they're all like sensational and they were all draft picks
for the most part, and he was one of them.
Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
Starting four front four one draft pick Will Anderson Junior,
starting three linebackers. Just use the group that they started
on Sunday, starting three nine backers. One also was a
draft pick, Henry as it sounds in the press box,
Henry to To And is it the.
Speaker 1 (01:11:07):
Same guy that's always been there? Yeah, it is, okay.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
And of the secondary, started four guys in the secondary
because they started three linebackers, uh one, two, three, four,
all four of them Texans draft picks. So six of
the eleven starters of this past Sunday on defense were
draftees of Nick Kosario.
Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
Gun to your head, you have to pick which one's
more dominant of the draft picks up front? No, no,
just just the positions just up front or secondary.
Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
Like, I know you, it's one of your favorite curb
your enthusiasm clips when Larry's talking to the white wife
and white parent. Mom is white, father is black and
they're about to have a child, and he's asking him
what they think it's going to look like, and he
gives them the gun to the head, you know, kind
of comment.
Speaker 1 (01:11:55):
I know that's fun for people to do. That go
to your head.
Speaker 22 (01:11:59):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:12:00):
The best edge rushing duo in the NFL is definitely
on the Texans. Mm hmm.
Speaker 2 (01:12:05):
It's definitely Anderson and Hunter. I respect the Broncos, I
respect Benito and Cooper.
Speaker 1 (01:12:12):
They're fine. I think this is the best.
Speaker 2 (01:12:14):
I best probably make the case that the best two
corners are also on the Texans and Lasser and Stingley.
I think they are the toughest to beat as corners,
and they do have the added benefit of having a
great front.
Speaker 1 (01:12:29):
Hey, the Broncos can have the best nickname, but they
can't have the best secondary.
Speaker 6 (01:12:32):
Right.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
So in saying those two things, we're doing a Petrie segment.
So obviously Petrie's actually having his best year despite missing
some time. He's having his best season as They've continue
to make him a better and better player by putting
him in better and better spot.
Speaker 1 (01:12:45):
Take the guardian helmet off. It's the source of his powers.
It's a smart thing to do. More players should do it.
Kaitlin Bullock is a ballhawk. He's phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
And then I can't sit here and act like Tim Settle,
Sheldon Rankins, Tommy Toji, Denico Autry and the other as
in the middle of the front haven't also been great.
Speaker 1 (01:13:04):
Is the gun loaded? It's very loaded. It's very effective.
This is it.
Speaker 2 (01:13:11):
I'm gonna say, it's harder to find the corners, so
I'll take them as a UNI.
Speaker 1 (01:13:17):
See the way you phrase that convinces me, so I
will withdraw the gun. That's tough, man, You get to live.
I'm excited metaphorically. Of course, you're gonna murder me on
the show. I'm gonna murder you on the show. Very
very important stuff. Today, the NFL was nice enough to
release the super important voting for the Pro Bowl Games.
Oh good if Matt shab was an MVP once. So
(01:13:38):
let's focus in on the areas we were just discussing.
There's a position of free safety. There's a position of
strong safety, there's the cornerback position that pretty much encompasses
the Texan secondary. They do have a player who is
drawing significant attention among free safeties in the NFL. He's
second in the voting Klen Bullock, only to Kevin Byard
of the Bears, and Derek's drawing considerable consideration. At the
(01:14:03):
cornerback spot he's third, and PS two is not even
in the top ten. So that's probably all you need
to know about that list. Well, who are the top two?
Speaker 23 (01:14:14):
J C.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
Horn who's been awesome, very very good player, and Nashaun
Wright also of the Bears. Okay, the Bears have a
player that's second at center, first at free safety, first
at guard, second at cornerback, third at special teams player.
Speaker 1 (01:14:31):
Are you following this? Stop trying to make fetch happen?
I think the Bears are stuffing the ballot box.
Speaker 2 (01:14:37):
And then as we get to the other position, defensive end,
as they were in the first ballot.
Speaker 1 (01:14:41):
Returney when they lose in the first round.
Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
Will Anderson Junior and Daniel Hunter are fourth and fifth,
trailing former Cowboy Michaeh. Parsons, current Brown Miles Garrett and
Michigan's favorite son Aiden Hutchinson. Okay, the Pro Bowl fight,
but like other Pro Bowl jams votes, Well, the whole
thing is a joke.
Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
It's it's it's it's the thing. Whatever they want is
the NBA all start, It's not whatever it is, it's
the fan. How serious do you take it? I don't.
It's a joke. See, I know who the top vote
getter at the quarterback position is, sure, I bet you do.
He looks just like him, especially when he grew his
(01:15:23):
hair out and had a stupid haircut in front of everybody. Okay,
you realize how pathetic it was that until TJ. Yates,
by the way, throw that touchdown pass to Kevin Walter
with no s that the highlight of the Texans franchise
to highlights, basically was opening night win over the Dallas
(01:15:43):
Cowboys and Quincy Carter at quarterback coached by Dave Campo.
Well think keep it with this in mind.
Speaker 2 (01:15:51):
A lot of people were asking that question about the
Texans prior to Sunday night. You know, if this isn't
the biggest game in Texas history regular season, what is?
And your list of them is so small, it's tiny.
Speaker 1 (01:16:04):
Those are the three. It's when they clinched their first
playoff game when they beat the Kansas City Chiefs on
Sunday night. Just now, yes, and their first game, and some.
Speaker 2 (01:16:14):
Were suggesting a couple of years ago with CJ and
Demiico and will beating the Colts and final day of
the season to cement their playoff birth, to get their
playoff birth. Okay, there's your top five, because again, moments
not game, and we still have an open spot. David
Carr's haircut was like for the first eight years of
the franchise, that was one of them. We were several
years into his career before he realized he didn't have
(01:16:35):
to cut it so short.
Speaker 1 (01:16:37):
We were not several years into his career before we
realized they should have drafted Julius Peppers. Like the first day,
all right, I'll give him the second day when Junior
say I was the first ja him as a treadmill. Yeah,
but the first day quote unquote was a victory, That's
what I'm saying. The second day was when Junior Sao
used his face. Is it the way to seven and nine?
(01:16:58):
In year three? And then Chris Palmer's offense was awesome,
wasn't it. See now you're saying it's not even David's fault,
it was the ladder's fault. They set up ladders inside
the bubble for him to throw over around both.
Speaker 2 (01:17:15):
I mean, ladders are an item that's expected to be tall.
I assume they didn't use them for their width.
Speaker 1 (01:17:20):
Well, but I forget. Were they just put a person there.
Weren't they trying to get right? Weren't they trying to
get rid of his side arm delivery or encourage him
to side arm deliver? I can't remember what it was.
Speaker 2 (01:17:30):
Well, if you want to rip Chris Palmer, and if
that were the case, that would be a good reaon.
Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
We need you to go more side arm stationary ladders.
Hey man, this is not twenty twenty five stationary ten
foot ladders. I've got one hanging in my garage, garbage
cans and everything. It's okay. I've got a ten foot
and one of those huge well I don't even know
how tall. The big one is ladders in my garage
hanging side by side. Use them often. I've never once thought,
(01:17:55):
you know, this could be a football prop of some sort.
It's I'm cool to make fun of.
Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
Obviously, I probably not didn't have much to do with
why he and Chris didn't have success here or anywhere after.
Speaker 1 (01:18:08):
Is he still an analyst? David David Carr. He still
works the NFL network, but he's not on ESPN next
to Danie Orlowski today. They never he's never worked for ESPN.
Who's that guy again? Field Yates? Oh yeah, Field Yates, Field.
We're gonna call.
Speaker 2 (01:18:23):
Him Field Field first name, Field covers football. No way
you think he grew up knowing he was gonna do
that when his name was Larry. There's no way Fields
his real name is It probably is. It's a stage name.
Speaker 1 (01:18:38):
All right, Let's get to some cjs. Drake May, by
the way, Drake May's what the number one vote getting
quarterback in the NFL. Oh, I'm glad you you've paid
off on your teas. People were like, are they ever
gonna stop talking about ladders so that WEX can deliver
on that? There you go, all right, good for him,
and then they're not frauds at all. They're not frauds.
(01:18:59):
They're just not what we expect from the best team
in the AFC. I don't think it's interesting you bring
that up, because in the coming segments we'll have some like,
as much as.
Speaker 2 (01:19:07):
You want to prop up anybody the Texans, let's say,
like every other team in the AFC playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:19:15):
Patriots and Bronco World beaters. I hate to break down
to you, you're not That's what we're saying, the same thing.
Speaker 18 (01:19:22):
I know.
Speaker 2 (01:19:22):
But that doesn't make them frauds. They're just not what
we expect out of a number one seed. Also there
who we think.
Speaker 1 (01:19:27):
Also does it make the Texans frauds that they're just
playing right now good defensively? First of all, if you
say that a key to leave or TJ Ward, I don't.
I don't know what you're talking about, just one side
of the ball. They're not smart either, one of those guys.
Speaker 2 (01:19:41):
You can't, especially like the Texans are some oh my god,
you might not want to play their defense, but they're
on only on the field for twenty eight minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
If I were to tell you that one of those
two names I just mentioned said that they would take
bow Nick's over CJ. Stroud with a straight face, believe
it or not. I believe it. I mean there's some
idiots that have I mean again, it's their little podcast.
Anybody can do that these days. Yes, that's what people
do these. I would hope nobody's paying them for it.
But people get paid to do dumb stuff all the time. Okay,
(01:20:13):
On the flip side, speaking of CJ, he was asked
about the the pass rush, the fact that the defense
of the Kansas City Chiefs made his life absolutely miserable,
particularly in that third quarter of the game the other night,
and they're blitzes or what we're doing. That obviously spearheaded
(01:20:36):
by Chris Jones and others, but this was CJ talking
about that in the post game after the Texans were
able to eke out that twenty to ten victory in
Kansas City.
Speaker 24 (01:20:45):
We just got to be better with you know, our
doing it better and you know me, you know, throwing
our hots and you know, just making trying to make plays,
you know, and I got to be better on first down.
That's really the key. You know, if we can get
to third and shorts and you know, thirdy mediums, that
helps us out.
Speaker 1 (01:20:59):
So you know what he didn't say right there, It
would also be awesome if we weren't penalized so that
when we get to those third and shorts, they're not
now third and lungs because of stupid things we're doing
like illegal shifts and things of that nature.
Speaker 2 (01:21:10):
What he did say was very self aware and it's
been I wouldn't call it a problem. It's just part
of a lot of young quarterbacks make up the first
couple of years, and I wish he was beyond that.
And I do think the OC and the plays that
they're calling can help, but it's on him to recognize
and get it to their hots. But if you're watching
some of these games and you see seven coming and
there's a hole here and a hole there, and he
(01:21:31):
knows he's got to get rid of it. Well, I
brought it up yesterday. Went oh for eight in the
third quarter but only had five targets to a receiver
because three of the balls weren't targeting anybody. He just
threw the ball into the dirt. There's no hot on
some of these plays. If you're watching the either the
receiver isn't recognizing that you are the hot from where
the blitz is coming from, or you need to recognize
(01:21:53):
what is happening and you have to be an outlet
for him. Some of these plays where you're seeing seven
blitzers or seven committed to the pass rush. The Texans
do have the numbers to block them, but that also
means they have almost nobody running routes. You know, one
of the plays in particular, CJ. Stroud drops back and
he sees them coming. They're coming up the middle, so
(01:22:14):
he's not fooled by it, but there's also nowhere for
him to go, and there's not a single receiver who's
turned around yet. There's not a single receiver that's even open.
They're all running routes that are a little too long,
developing routes to be running for what you're probably gonna
see on that whatever was second to nine or third
and eight, or whatever the case may be. And I
think that's a team wide OC quarterback everybody on the
(01:22:37):
same page understanding what they have to do to combat that,
because one way to stop the blitz is to burn them,
and the Texans did it pretty well two weeks ago,
didn't do it quite as well this week. The ones
where they burned them were where they turned into plays
off schedule. CJ was able to get out of the
(01:22:57):
pressure and roll out to his right and make a
throw on the run. But when you burn them on well,
here's where the blitzer's coming from. Here's my hot receiver.
I threw it to him. We got the first down.
Let's move the chains. If you do that consistently enough,
then it feels like their DC is like, well, they
see what's coming. They've kind of figured it out.
Speaker 1 (01:23:14):
Yeah. I will get what Chris Jones had to say
about CJ. Stroud in the postgame aftermath. We'll get to
an amazing Houston Sports anniversary twenty one years ago tonight
and one of those stupid comments I was talking about
TJ Ward, what he had to say about picking bow
Knicks over CJ. Stroud. That's all coming up next.
Speaker 2 (01:23:37):
Our number three of the A team on a Tuesday afternoon,
get to an interview with chandeler Rome when he joins
us at five o'clock, so one hour from now, rather
than go with football at five at that point in time.
A few other items on the Astros front we'll get
to between now and then, and then again with him
from the winter meetings. We're into Week fifteen in the NFL.
Week fourteen closed out last night in a game that
(01:23:59):
does impact AFC playoff picture, and very close to having
it impact the Texans in a very positive way. Right
up until the Philadelphia Eagles turned the ball over for
the fifth time game that went overtime between the Eagles
and Chargers. Chargers opened the game up with a long
touchdown drive and never found the end zone again, but
still one. A very five field goal performance from Cameron
(01:24:21):
Dicker in his final kick came on the opening possession
of overtime. Overtime rules now allow for both teams to
possess the football, so the Eagles had their opportunity and
made some pretty impressive, somewhat miracle like plays to make
their way down the field and had an opportunity to
go for the win by attempting to put the ball
in the end zone. Kind Of surprised how many people
(01:24:42):
don't realize that that's not a really bad idea. It's
actually the right idea, not specific to the mistake that
was made or the play that was made by Jalen
Hurts or the defender that batted the ball in the air,
but you know, playing for the field goal, and you
don't want to get too aggressive here. You got a
chance to tie the game. Great, it's sudden death as
soon as you do that. And guess who's getting the
ball not you? And guess how many minutes are left
(01:25:05):
in the game, not many if you want to tie,
which yes, it's better than a loss. I guess you
can go conservative there, but I don't even think they
were uber aggressive. They just threw a called a pass play.
He had two open receivers. Unfortunately they were not far
enough away from each other. And it's actually kind of
the design of the play. It was just a nice
(01:25:26):
play made by the defender who dropped off his assignment,
which was Dallas Goddard got his hand on the ball
that was headed towards DeVante Smith who was open, but
with the ball tipped up into the air, it was
picked off by Jefferson and that was it. A lot
of people also realized what happened there. So both teams
get a possession of overtime. So Chargers get the ball,
they kick a field goal. So your opportunity to tie
(01:25:49):
or win the game comes when you're the other team,
and that's the Eagles. Well, when the ball gets intercepted,
people are like, okay, well then that's their possession, right,
so it's over. As soon as he intercepts the football,
game's over. Blow the whistle, it's it. It's not actually true.
The play has to be completed first. As soon as
(01:26:10):
the play is completed, yes, the game is over. And
in that situation only three things can happen. He gets tackled,
game over, he goes down on his own game over,
it's essentially the same thing. Or he returns it and
fumbles and the Eagles recover it. Now, if the Eagles
recover it and don't score, the game is also over.
(01:26:32):
But if the Eagles recover a fumble on that play
and return it for a touchdown, they win. The game
doesn't end on the interception. The game ends on the
interceptions play ending. So people were a little bit confused
by that. They started asking that question, what should have
happened here, you know, should the officials have blown the whistle?
Because what technically happened was Jefferson had a teammate who's like,
(01:26:56):
don't return this, dude, and he basically tackled him. He
tackled him so the play would be over and they
would win the game, and in doing so, kept the
Texans in the number seven spot in the AFC playoff picture.
A Chargers loss put them would have put them at
eight and five. Texans would have held the tiebreaker over
them before they even meet in week seventeen of them.
So Bills are nine and four, Texans have beaten them,
(01:27:17):
they're in or they're in the sixth spot. Chargers moved
into the five spot with their win getting them to
nine and four, another team that they will see and
have a chance to beat. Clearly if they beat them,
they obviously are now even up, pending the results of
the other three games, two of which get played before then.
You know, remaining schedules for all these teams. The Texans
chances of making the playoffs were already exceptional before we
(01:27:39):
knew that Riley Rivers or Philip Leonard was starting for
the Indianapolis Colts the rest of the season, or Brett
Rippin for that matter. Yes, Philip Rivers is on an
NFL practice squad roster as of today, he's signed to
the Colts practice squad. Cults remaining schedule is already so difficult.
Plus the Texans already beaten once and they're playing up
at the end of the season in Houston. So I
(01:28:00):
think the assumption was at eight and five, you're going
to remain no worse than ahead of them in the tiebreaker,
but more than likely you're going to have a better
record than them.
Speaker 1 (01:28:09):
The teams behind them are all six and seven. Your
two wins ahead of those teams. You've beaten the Ravens,
you've beaten the Chiefs. I don't think you're worried about
the Dolphins, who are also six and seven. So the
idea that you're going to miss the playoffs is almost
out the window. And obviously you can take care of
your own business. Now you just win, You're fine, But
(01:28:30):
where do you want to be? Does it matter to
rise up in the playoffs?
Speaker 2 (01:28:33):
To me, it always matters to rise up because you
could run into a team worse than you later in
the playoffs, which then you get to host yep, especially
this year with what we're keep telling you is a
wide open AFC.
Speaker 1 (01:28:46):
Wide open AFC, And it's like, you've done this much
work already, why not just go ahead and win the
division while you're at it.
Speaker 2 (01:28:52):
Yeah, they're in the position to win the division. Basically
comes down to you taking care of your own business
and out playing the Jaguars by one win. And that
one lost for them presumably comes against uh, the Denver
Broncos and bone Nicks. All right, and the Broncos half
the Jaguars coming up in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:29:08):
I'm gonna shell the the Bone Knicks conversation, or at
least about five minutes of setup and shelves it well,
because I can do two for the price of one
if I play my cards right here. Plus, we're way
behind on things I wanted to already get to, like
the fact that Chris Jones gave some serious love Chris Jones.
Who's that the defensive pass rusher for the Chiefs? Whose
(01:29:30):
name I'm screwing up right now? Stone cold Chris Jones.
Everybody I know he's saying, was Chris Jones. I didn't
you know who you made me think of when I
said when I when you did that? No Chris Jones.
Jonesy Stone called Chris Jones. We I kind of established
that pre the game. No, Aaron Wilson established forward on
this program. He should be referred to as Stone Parson, judge,
(01:29:53):
and stone cold Chris Jones.
Speaker 2 (01:29:55):
Today is a good day to talk stone cold. Yes,
he is insulted that you're even doing that. I mean,
come on on, stone cold Chris Jones.
Speaker 1 (01:30:01):
What did he have to say?
Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
After the Texans and Chiefs got together? It was pretty
good stuff. M M all right, what did he say?
Speaker 6 (01:30:09):
He met a lot of tough asses today.
Speaker 3 (01:30:14):
And then they caught the ball.
Speaker 7 (01:30:15):
Well, we tried our best to affect him multiple different
blitzes and after him with four what he played tough today?
Speaker 1 (01:30:23):
So you can tell. And if you watch that press
conference where he's saying that, which of course I did. Yeah,
of course you did. You watched the whole thing, didn't you.
He was dressed very nicely. Yeah, it was. It was
brief if you were to just hear that, which we
just did. This is radio for this, for the sake
of at least this sound by I know you're watching
us right now, but you weren't watching Chris Jones. I'm sorry,
(01:30:44):
stone cold Chris Jones. Jeff, what a joke, wouldn't it
sound to you? Just the audio that he was like
it was excruciating for him to give credit to C. J. Stroud,
even though if you see it, it's not at all
how he was delivering that, but it sounded like, oh man,
we should have won that game, We should have done this.
(01:31:05):
We were because if they play the third quarter all
four quarters, it still might be a Texans victory, but
it's probably like six', three you.
Speaker 2 (01:31:15):
KNOW i mean The texans got two hundred and three
yards out OF, cj almost half of that coming on two.
Speaker 1 (01:31:20):
Plays mm.
Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
Hmm he threw more incompletions than. Completions. Yep his one
touchdown pass was the wonder what he marks inside the red?
Zone and a little, short little dump? Off how did
he get? There rest of the, way how did he get?
There they sacked him three times and he was still
the better quarterback out there by far that. Night statistically,
speaking he just was. Well his receivers did a better
(01:31:43):
job of, SAYING i, mean if he's going to throw
it to, ME i might.
Speaker 1 (01:31:45):
As well catch. It that's Not CJ's.
Speaker 2 (01:31:47):
Fault, Okay, well then it's Not pat's. Fault it is
a little bit he was rushed on some of those.
THROWS i would actually want to promote this. Idea Chris
jones is. Right it's it's okay to say a quarterback
he went fifteen to thirty, one completed less than half
of his, passes had almost half of his yards on
just two of those thirty one. Attempts on a day
(01:32:07):
he only threw for two hundred and three. Yards it's
sometimes it is about when you make. Them they spent
an entire third quarter of disaster. Ball he threw the
ball eight, times they didn't catch any of. Them they
went oh for.
Speaker 1 (01:32:17):
Eight they went oh for four on the four, drives
they were all three and outs minus two. Yards BUT i.
Speaker 2 (01:32:22):
Needed a third down pass. HERE i needed to Find
higgins on this. PLAY i needed to Find Nico collins
on this, scramble and he. Did and those were the
drives that resulted in The texans putting points on the.
Board whereas The chiefs quarterback and their, offense they just
made so few of those. Plays the whole day was
nothing but, negatives, essentially and at least in The texans.
(01:32:43):
Case i'm not, saying you see j had a great
day by any. MEANS i don't Think Chris jones was.
Either but you don't have to have a great day
if you just make a few. Plays the offense scored twenty,
points granted they got some help from the field position
defensively multiple. Times make a few more plays and now
maybe it got for twenty, four you got twenty. Seven
they've done one thing really really well SINCE cj really
(01:33:06):
most of the, year but certainly SINCE cj got hurt
against The. Broncos they're not giving the ball to the
other team very, often very very very very few.
Speaker 1 (01:33:13):
Turnover they're winning a turnover, battle which sounds cliched and
sounds like coach speak and all that kind of, stuff
but it, is it's absolutely. Working and when you combine
that with what their defense is, doing it's a very
it's a very successful recipe for. Success that sounds like,
redundant BUT i mean is It's it's. Simple it's almost
(01:33:39):
necessary considering what their personnel is up. Front as far
As CJ's, LINE i, MEAN i know we went into
that talking about how they are playing, better but and,
Again Chris jones can wreck a lot of game. Plans he.
Speaker 2 (01:33:50):
Did he had a great. Day very few others on
the defense. Did bolton was, fine but they got what
they needed out of one of their, players their best.
Player he retavocked. PROBABLY i, mean we know for the
plays that were really talked about a lot by. Somebody
but it still goes back to The. Texans, okay, fine we'll,
punt and they also And i'm not sure That i'll
be able to get over there On thursday When Frank ross.
(01:34:12):
TALKS i think they had a pretty specific plan with
what otherwise would be regarded as not a very good
day punting the. FOOTBALL i think they just, decided looking
at their coverage unit and looking At Xavier. WORTHY i
don't care he's not returning any of these. Punts, tommy
kick it up in the air and make him fair catch,
it which he did the entire, day and he was
(01:34:33):
getting thirty nine yard punts and forty forty three yard.
PUNTS i think it was by. Design, NO i mean
just overall since getting. HERE i think they're asking him
to do certain things that make his numbers not look very.
Good he's had some punts that obviously he'd like to have,
back so it's not an excusing the whole set last.
Speaker 1 (01:34:48):
Part, yeah but he had a.
Speaker 2 (01:34:51):
Bunch of short punts against The, chiefs AND i don't
think it was he screwed. UP i think they asked
him to make sure our net is thirty eight because
he's not going to get any. RETURN i don't want
a fifty one yard punt that he gets eleven yard
running start into our coverage.
Speaker 1 (01:35:05):
UNIT i think it was by. Design, yeah it's been some,
good some bad with, him but, yeah IT'S i CAN'T
i can't get mad at the special teams this, year
especially when you weren't drinking any field goal attempts like
the other. Guy But, kerr all, RIGHT a, big, big big.
Deal twenty one years ago, tonight where were you as
(01:35:26):
A houston sports? Fan we'll discuss. Next, so, uh twenty
one years ago tonight was my first official night on the.
Radio here is like a sports broadcaster In, houston stationed
down the. Dial it was basically a.
Speaker 8 (01:35:47):
Live.
Speaker 1 (01:35:47):
AUDITION i GUESS i don't think were you guys doing
the night show yet at that point In december of
two thousand and four or is that coming in the next.
Speaker 2 (01:35:57):
YEAR i think let me pull up my LinkedIn page
see IF i can figure that. Out, LinkedIn i mean
that has my resume on. It, yeah because you can't remember,
YEARS i mean that sounds like it's probably the. CASE
i think you were still a channel. TOO i THINK
i was working the night.
Speaker 1 (01:36:12):
Shift, Okay, well in case you're wondering why we're talking
about this and The rockets posted this earlier, today we're
in a little bit of another lull in The rockets.
CALENDAR i don't know why they have two back to
backs in one. Week and then have three straight days
off on weeks either side of, that you could have
just spread out the. Schedule.
Speaker 2 (01:36:30):
Well basically every team has this, benefit except for the
eight teams that are playing tonight and tomorrow in THE Nba.
Cup the other twenty two teams take this extended period
and play only two basketball. Games it will work out
for the teams that lose tonight or tomorrow that they'll
also have a little bit of a, benefit and it
will work out less for the teams that keep, winning
(01:36:51):
especially the ones that play an eighty third.
Speaker 1 (01:36:53):
Game hopefully it's the thunder and hopefully everybody just has
worn out and just decides to disband. It it'll be
what derails them, letely just full the.
Speaker 2 (01:37:01):
Franchise The rockets had five games and seven, nights which
they concluded On saturday, night and then they had two
games in ten, days neither of which they've played yet
was over At rockets practice earlier. Today they will do
so again, tomorrow and Then thursday they will play that
next game when The clippers come into, town and then
they Have friday off And saturday off And sunday off
before they Play monday In, denver only to return To
(01:37:23):
louisiana then to go back out To denver on the
front side of.
Speaker 1 (01:37:26):
What will be a six game road. Trip so, Dumb,
hey we'd like to play two games in one. City
it really, Helps but then we're not on purpose.
Speaker 2 (01:37:34):
Because it's one they very few, pitfalls if you, will
of not having an eighty two game. Schedule when the
eighty two game schedule comes, out you have an eighty
game schedule and they have to fit in the other two.
Games and just worked out that they already had A
west coast trip planned and it included a it would have, been,
oh just go To New orleans and play a, game
then fly out to The west for the final four. Games,
(01:37:56):
well they put a game In denver in front of
The New orleans.
Speaker 1 (01:37:59):
Game i'm. Sorry if THE Nba cup meant, more see
WHAT i did, There it.
Speaker 2 (01:38:05):
Doesn't they don't try to tell you it just means.
More but they do play as if it. Does you
can't deny.
Speaker 4 (01:38:10):
That, yes but it.
Speaker 1 (01:38:12):
Doesn't it means more to them in their, pockets more
than half a million. Dollars it's a handful of people
in the WORLD i can put on basically like a
couple hands per, game all, right, sure and the rest
of it's just.
Speaker 2 (01:38:26):
Wait there are there are players on the roster who
barely make any MONEY nba, wise and you're gonna tell,
them we'll get you an extra five hundred thousand just
for get a better.
Speaker 1 (01:38:34):
Agent watching your teammates win the game or be better.
There they can only do so. Much they're paid based
on their. Performances it's it's. All their performance doesn't even.
Exist they don't even play. Well maybe they would if
their performance was. Better so, anyway do you remember back
in the day when The rockets And spurs were coached
(01:38:55):
By Jeff Van gundy And Greg popovich, respectively and their
games root teamly would challenge getting to the eighty point.
MARK i, do and in TODAY'S nba kids these, DAYS
i don't even know if that Would could you get
people to watch that kind of basketball these? Days and
that's like a half of basketball for This rockets team this?
(01:39:15):
Year they hit Seventy the other.
Speaker 2 (01:39:16):
Night last, night These spurs were on the court against The.
Pelicans they held The pelicans to fifty seven points in
the first, half and then The pelicans scored forty five
in the third quarter. Alone The pelicans the three Win
pelicans had a forty five point, quarter unfortunately in.
Speaker 1 (01:39:32):
Defeat and this is not in an era where guys couldn't.
Score the guy you're about to hear, from he's come
off scoring championship In orlando where he scored thirty plus per.
Game that that would be that'd be fantastic in TODAY'S,
nba but it would probably be good for like tenth
in the league thirty points per. Game so The rockets
(01:39:56):
And spurs were playing out another relatively early season matchup
in which not a lot of. Offense rockets were losing
to The spurs again because that's what they did back
then all the.
Speaker 2 (01:40:08):
Time, Yeah Reece gains on one, Side Rascho nasterovic on the.
Other what an, awful awful. Matchup don't Forget Devin.
Speaker 1 (01:40:14):
Brown everyone paid to go See Beno udri And Scott
pageck get. Together. Matchup, oh let's not since you're gonna
hear the audio, here let's not bury the, lead which
is That Steve kerr was on commentary With marv Albert
i used to do that for those that don't.
Speaker 2 (01:40:30):
Remember before he was Watching Steph curry play, basketball watching
so ro seat every.
Speaker 1 (01:40:36):
Night we'll just let you Well let's let you hear
how this unfolded over basically thirty three seconds of pure magic.
Speaker 25 (01:40:45):
Down by double digits in the final.
Speaker 4 (01:40:47):
Minute get that play direct.
Speaker 7 (01:40:52):
From which obviously upset with freaks.
Speaker 4 (01:41:00):
Down leave by seven brought The twitter to a quick.
Shot bowing is all. Over the Grading fire has picked up.
Speaker 5 (01:41:05):
Henstraight SuPAR training up down time a four point Twenty
Scott foster not in the house that night.
Speaker 1 (01:41:15):
Mare can't find anybody, there no. Turnout preading finally gets
it into The grady are greedy and a board fourth.
Speaker 4 (01:41:22):
Three the gases traight clean cuts it to two point?
Speaker 1 (01:41:28):
Three why making difficult for Brush. Fire he gets it.
Speaker 22 (01:41:30):
In N brown lost it so here couts For grady
Turnout snada her brading full.
Speaker 26 (01:41:38):
Again yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:41:41):
Point seven to.
Speaker 1 (01:41:42):
Go He Santa cony off for turn.
Speaker 4 (01:41:45):
Up here's Park.
Speaker 1 (01:41:47):
Steel little games put the slugs.
Speaker 11 (01:41:51):
Crazy Her brady on him in incredible her horn a
thousand ft including a four point.
Speaker 7 (01:41:58):
Play the only THING i WAS i didn't want to
side a, game SO i was thinking the ball getting
up with three got it?
Speaker 27 (01:42:04):
Up oh. Okay i've never been a part of anything.
Speaker 3 (01:42:09):
Like, this so that was.
Speaker 1 (01:42:11):
Unbelievable is A tnt. Game, obviously by the, way all
those shots that he was hitting As marv was just
spectacular calling. Them could you imagine If Mike breen had
been on the, Call bang bang bang would have been,
horrible and you, know it just would have been the.
Same that's not the same Without marv on the. Call come,
on even you have to admit that even though you
Love Mike, breen you love, Him you love him Like
(01:42:34):
Chris collinsworth Loves Patrick.
Speaker 2 (01:42:35):
Mahomes that is, incorrect all, right nobody loves anybody that.
MUCH i don't Love Mike breen at any.
Speaker 1 (01:42:42):
Level were you in the? Building uh? No what were
you one of the people that left. Early i'm just.
Kidding you would have had to have had. Tickets Uh,
NO i wasn't there at. All if you're in the.
Speaker 2 (01:42:53):
Car listening to that after you've left, early you're just kicking.
Yourself very low scoring. Game final score rockets eighty, One
spurs Eighty all.
Speaker 1 (01:43:03):
Of that that thirteen points in thirty three seconds to
get to eighty.
Speaker 2 (01:43:07):
One, Okay so it started with you, know basically a
half minute, Remaining so you played forty seven and a
half minutes of basketball roughly h and at that point in,
time The rockets had scored through the, first, second and third,
quarter plus almost the entire fourth quarter sixty eight.
Speaker 1 (01:43:22):
Points it just, brutal and they would go on to
do that again in a playoff game where they would
stop at sixty Seven In utah defense.
Speaker 2 (01:43:32):
Helped spurs made only four shots in the fourth quarter
four of. Nineteen they did go to the free throw
line fifteen. Times but IT'S nba wise still one of
the most memorable anything's stretches, moments moments in. History it
is still widely regarded league wide as just one of
the SPECTACULAR nba moments and ushered By tracy McGrady Houston.
Speaker 1 (01:43:55):
Rockets, now since we're talking about the, commentators obviously we
Covered marv and how completely and utterly superior he is
in every way To Mike. Breen that's, established that's a.
Fact it's not.
Speaker 2 (01:44:08):
Subjective Mike brain just did not ever have a regular
segment on The David Letterman, show.
Speaker 1 (01:44:16):
That's, true and couldn't. Have it wouldn't have been a
Funny he's not a funny. Person, no he's Just Mike.
Breen but how sad Does Steve kerr sound that his
former team is losing To. Houston it was a pattern
that was established that night and would continue on to
this day Where Steve kerr whins whenever anything good happens
(01:44:38):
for The Houston. ROCKETS i didn't even hear. Him what
did he? Say, oh he was. Amazed he wasn't. Sad
he was. SAD i met him. BEFORE i, Know i've
met him before. Too you know. What the day they came,
in he And marv came in that, NIGHT i BELIEVE
i could be getting this mixed. UP i was over
there With Jeremy foster outside the administrative. ENTRANCE i didn't
(01:45:00):
care anything About Steve. Kerr he was just some guy
that played with the. Bulls that's ALL i knew about.
Him at that. Point he hadn't. COACHED i don't think
he had coached anybody at that, point AND i wanted
to get my number one objective was to get a
drop for the radio station From Marv. Albert, Like, Hi
I'm Marv. Albert you're listening to such and, such, right
so this is THE a? Team, yes that would Be
(01:45:22):
oh my, gosh could you imagine we probably know somebody
that knows somebody that can make that. HAPPEN i know
somebody's initials ARE, Ai i'm sure we could make it. Happen, Okay,
WELL i approached him very, politely but, again this is
like one of my first days on the, job AND
i asked him CAN i get a? Dress and he
goes a drop like he didn't know what a drop.
Was i'm, like come, on, man don't give me a hard.
(01:45:43):
TIME i know you're the marvelous, one but come. On
so it didn't. HAPPEN i didn't get one from him Or,
kenny all right when we come. Back signature segment on
A tuesday is say what and boy do we have

Speaker 1 (01:51:49):
Now and this one is a doozy because it is
two people on the same podcast equally just raining on
the text. Parade that's the best way to put. It
i'm trying to clean it up for the television etiquette
side of. Things if this were just a radio only,
show it right. NOW i tell you what they were.
DOING i tell you right. Now they're in the, arena
(01:52:12):
right mm, hmm the Grid Iron. Arena, sure that's the
name of the. Podcast they're not the man in the.
Arena that's.
Speaker 2 (01:52:17):
Different it's called the. Arena it's a podcast center out
the Grid. Iron SO i don't want to give you
too much information, First i'd rather let the sound tell the.
Story Then i'll add in some filler material After.
Speaker 1 (01:52:29):
Well you have to. Choose that's the only Thing i'm
asking of. YOU a key to lead OR Tj. Ward
we're gonna get, both aren't. We, yeah, okay who's going?
First we'll go with the guy that could. Be he
is basically THE a, team a keep to, Lead so
with him a key to. Lead really likable guy during
his playing, DAYS i mean really. Likable we're ON. Tv
they're not going to fall for. That and by, LIKABLE i, mean,
(01:52:52):
hey do you like this punch in the. Nose, well
here's another five that's how. Likable he was very, unlikable very. Unlikable,
guy and he sort of gives credit to The texans
and then takes it right away or turns it into
a backhanded.
Speaker 26 (01:53:08):
Compliment take a, listen, WELL i think if the if
the playoffs started, today they would have to go To
New england.
Speaker 27 (01:53:14):
And they'll get their ass popped round. One so the
defense will take them all the way up To, foxboro get.
Speaker 1 (01:53:20):
POP i like playing good. BALL i don't Think New
eveland playing good ball at all right.
Speaker 27 (01:53:29):
Now but go, ahead, Man New england is Going they
defense flying under the.
Speaker 3 (01:53:34):
Radar you know What i'm. Saying they gonna play physical
as hell.
Speaker 27 (01:53:37):
Too and when the playoffs, COME i guarantee You raybral
had him boys ready to. Go, YES i guarantee you
mcdamd's have an excellent game plan against that little on
coverage that they.
Speaker 3 (01:53:46):
RUN i just like if it.
Speaker 27 (01:53:48):
Stayed like, THIS i like them to go get pop right.
NOW i, mean with that good, defense their offense just
ain't bringing enough to the. Table Like richie, said defensive played.
Well but But drake just, Accurate, bro he gonna he
gonna put completions at the completions. Together he gonna go,
Down he's gonna get. Points josh mcdam's has seen it,
all you know What i'm. Saying so it just it'd
be it'd be bad luck for them to draw The
(01:54:09):
patriots first round and gotta go To New. ENGLAND i
mean to hear him say. It Tom brady's rolling out
there in his. Prime you're gonna Have frable not, coaching
but rather flying around at linebacker along with everybody else
on that. Defense Rodney harrison's gonna be laying the hat
to WHOEVER cj tries.
Speaker 1 (01:54:27):
TO i, mean It's patriots two thousand and one right.
Now they're. Awesome Trump may is like a. Legend he's
going in The hall Of fame next. Week you're the seventh?
Seed is that bad? Luck you're playing a good. Team
but that's is. Everything what does luck have to? Do
you're the worst team in the. PLAYOFFS i started owing
a three and you've won five in a row during
this stretch to get yourself into this. Position that's not.
Luck all That all that that was was just you
(01:54:50):
had an opinion Former, patriot, RIGHT i suppose what do
you play like five minutes? THERE i, mean he's A.
Bronco you want to, go oh A?
Speaker 2 (01:54:58):
Bronco H, okay we're getting, somewhere getting some, backgrounds some
filler information about. This keith To leeb spent a bunch
of years in THE. Nfl five In, tampa four In,
denver to IN la with The. Rams and, yes he
played nineteen games with The. Patriots, yeah The. Patriots who
else is A? Bronco who else is A? Bronco some
guy NAMED Tj? Ward, YEP Tj ward have spent a
(01:55:21):
few minutes in THE nfl and some of his years
were spent wearing A Denver broncos. UNIFORM i wonder what
he thinks about. It let's hear from.
Speaker 3 (01:55:29):
Him they get to THE Afc. Championship you, think, yeah
they get to THE Afc.
Speaker 22 (01:55:33):
CHAMPIONSHIP i mean they played they PLAYING i think the
best defense in the league at this point, now were
the best defense overall all. Season but right NOW i
think The texans they're playing the best. Defense they just
their chemistry right now is just is being is beating.
Speaker 4 (01:55:48):
Pretty december it.
Speaker 22 (01:55:51):
Is but you, know all that being, said when it
comes down to, it we beat. Him our defense is.
Better so if they have to run into, was they
won't get that. Win AND i Like Bowl knicks over C. J.
STROUP i just.
Speaker 24 (01:56:04):
Do and that's.
Speaker 20 (01:56:05):
That what is?
Speaker 1 (01:56:06):
There what are you talking? About on A tuesday play what?
Speaker 4 (01:56:10):
AGAIN i tell you, now say? What all?
Speaker 1 (01:56:16):
Right it's that time where we listen to people say
things and we go, say what are you kidding?
Speaker 6 (01:56:21):

Compliment take a, listen, WELL i think if the if
the playoffs started, today they would have to go To
New engley and they'd get their ass popped round.
Speaker 3 (01:57:48):
One so the defensive take them all the way up
To foxborough.
Speaker 1 (01:57:59):
Playing good. BALL i Think new even play good ball
at all right.
Speaker 27 (01:58:01):
Now but go, ahead, Man New england is Going they
defense flying under the.
Speaker 3 (01:58:06):
Radar you know What i'm. Saying they gonna play physical
as hell.
Speaker 27 (01:58:09):
Too and when the playoffs, COME i guarantee You rabral
had him boys ready to.
Speaker 3 (01:58:13):
Go, YES i guarantee you mcdaiell's.
Speaker 27 (01:58:15):
Have an excellent game plan against that little zone courvage
that they RUN i just like if it stayed like,
THIS i like them to go get popped right. NOW i,
mean with that good, defense the offense just ain't bringing
enough to the. Table Like richie, said defensive played.
Speaker 3 (01:58:28):
Well but But drake just. Accurate.
Speaker 27 (01:58:30):
Bro he gonna he gonna put completions after completions. Together
he gonna go, down he gonna get. Points josh mcdam's
has seen it, all you know What i'm. Saying so
it's just it'd be it'd be bad luck for them
to draw The patriots first round and gotta go To New.
ENGLAND i mean to hear him say. It Tom brady's
rolling out there in his. Prime you're gonna Have frable not,
(01:58:51):
coaching but rather flying around at linebacker along with everybody
else on that. Defense Rodney harrison's gonna be laying the
hat to WHOEVER cj tries. TO i, mean It's patriots
two thousand and one right.
Speaker 1 (01:59:02):
Now they're. Awesome may is like a. Legend he's going
to The hall Of fame next.
Speaker 2 (01:59:07):
Week you're the seventh. Seed it's not bad. Luck you're
playing a good team. Everything what does luck to you're
the worst team in the.
Speaker 1 (01:59:14):
PLAYOFFS i started owing it three and you've won five
in a row during this stretch to get yourself into this.
Position that's not luck all. That all that that was
was just you had an opinion Former, patriot, RIGHT i
suppose what do you? Play like five minutes? THERE i,
mean if he's A, bronco you want to, go, oh A. Bronco.
Speaker 2 (01:59:31):
Huh, okay we're getting, somewhere getting some backgrounds and filler
information about. This keep To lee spent a bunch of
years in THE. Nfl five In, tampa four In, denver
to IN la with The, rams.
Speaker 1 (01:59:43):
And, yes he played nineteen games with The. Patriots. Patriots
who else is A? Bronco who else is A? Bronco
some guy NAMED. Tj? Ward.
Speaker 3 (01:59:52):
YEP.
Speaker 2 (01:59:52):
Tj ward to spend a few minutes in THE, nfl
and some of his years were spent wearing A Denver bronco's.
UNIFORM i want to he thinks about. It let's hear from.
Speaker 3 (02:00:01):
Him they get to THE Afc. Championship, yeah they get
to THE Afc.
Speaker 22 (02:00:06):
CHAMPIONSHIP i mean they played they PLAYING i think the
best defense in the league at this. Point now we're
the best defense overall all, season but right NOW i
think The. Texans they're playing the best. Defense they just
their chemistry right now is just. Beating is beating pretty All,
december it. Is but you know all that being, said
(02:00:27):
when it comes down to, it we beat. Them our
defense is, better so if they have to run in to,
us they won't get that. Win AND i Like bowl
knicks OVER. Cj, STROUD i just. Do and that's that's
been proven into putting weekend and week. Out you KNOW
cj has been, out who's to say he donna get
knocked out?
Speaker 7 (02:00:43):
Again?
Speaker 1 (02:00:43):
Bowl being, healthy he closes games. Out you, know they
have a great.
Speaker 22 (02:00:47):
Secondary we have the best defensive player in our, secondary
player of the year pastor. Ten so they'll get to
THE afc chip they. Can they have the ability OF.
Cj stroud can not turn the ball. Over but that's
as far as that defense is gonna take.
Speaker 1 (02:01:02):
Him who is?
Speaker 2 (02:01:03):
We that's why he said what he, said he'd go
into The broncos locker. Room what kind of opinion do
you think you're gonna. Get he's gonna back his. TEAMMATE.
Tj ward plays for The. Broncos he's gonna back his.
Teammate he's currently on The. Broncos so of course he's
gonna like his. Guy it's his. Quarterback he's been on
the field with Bow knicks all, year in the locker
(02:01:23):
room with him the last two years as a member
of the current active Playing Denver. Broncos SO. Tj ward
is going to back his. Guy oh, wait he retired
like eight years.
Speaker 1 (02:01:33):
AGO i, mean.
Speaker 6 (02:01:36):
These.
Speaker 1 (02:01:36):
TWO i Thought brattowell did this a lot when he
was on. Broadcasts he's acting like he's in the locker.
Speaker 2 (02:01:42):
Room like you, Said it's funny because he actually seemed
to see things how they actually.
Speaker 1 (02:01:48):
Are broncos do have an awesome, Defense, yeah nobody's.
Speaker 2 (02:01:51):
Dead you Think texans are playing better defensively currently than
anyone in THE. Nfl if you want to put The,
Broncos seahawks And texans in some sort of conversation about
who has had the best defense this, Year i'm fine
with having the. CONVERSATION i, think you, know seeing The
texans is the way we do and as often as we,
do and maybe we know a little bit more about.
Them maybe he knows a little bit more About. Denver
it's Very denver centric in that particular. Arena if you,
(02:02:15):
will you did hear from a Former bronco you heard
from another Former, bronco you heard from The Shake cornett
of the, program their. Moderator it's just there to you,
know get everybody their.
Speaker 1 (02:02:26):
Time.
Speaker 2 (02:02:27):
Now, thankfully this actually could have been much much worse
when you pulled sound from this particular, Podcast BUT i
credit you for not making it. Worse do you even
know who's on this who sits there every week or
however often they record it and TALK nfl?
Speaker 1 (02:02:43):
Football BESIDES Tj ward and besides a keep to? Leap,
well seeing as how this is the first TIME i
even knew that this podcast existed, Today, NO i, Don't
so that means you didn't watch it much or AND
i saw a, clip BUT i only saw the two
of them in. It, well oftentimes you will see them
seeded TALKING nfl football with none other than genius of
(02:03:06):
all sports, geniuses one of the greatest to ever talk,
Sports Skipper Skip. Bayless that's what he's, doing not including
any nonsense from, him just these two.
Speaker 2 (02:03:16):
Guys well if those. Two by the, Way bonnicks is
not having a good. Season he's arguably having one of
the worst seasons of ANY nfl starting. Quarterback but as
long as you don't turn the, ball over In. Denver
you can. WIN i was saying this to somebody the other,
day AND i was not on this. SHOW i think
it was before the program started. Yesterday i'm gonna se
IF i can at least make sure to get the numbers.
Speaker 13 (02:03:34):
Right.
Speaker 2 (02:03:35):
WELL i was paying attention to The broncos game over
the weekend as they were moving through an, easy, comfortable
no way we could lose, game AND i noticed that
Bo nicks was basically completing every single pass he. Threw
he threw the ball thirty eight, times completed at thirty one,
times thirty one completions in an afternoon of. Football they
scored early played for him in front the entire, game
and he still threw thirty eight passes and completed thirty
(02:03:55):
one of.
Speaker 1 (02:03:55):
Them that's eighty two.
Speaker 2 (02:03:56):
Percent AND i don't know how it is even possible
he only had two hundred and twelve yards.
Speaker 1 (02:04:03):
Passing well because they were all a little dink and dunk.
Exactly that's Not he's.
Speaker 2 (02:04:08):
Not he is like they've won all these games at the,
end and Against, HOUSTON i can't say he didn't make.
Plays they just happened to be with his. Feet and
he's done that in other, games but he did put
him in position to kick the game winning.
Speaker 1 (02:04:19):
Field and this is what they do all season.
Speaker 2 (02:04:20):
Long if The patriots are awesome and you're gonna go
in there and you're gonna get beat nobody can beat.
Speaker 1 (02:04:25):
Them this is the.
Speaker 2 (02:04:26):
Opposite people are gonna, Say, man they're so lucky to
be eleven and two ten straight. Wins, all how'd they do?
It wait till the playoffs. Start this is what people
are about to start saying about The.
Speaker 1 (02:04:36):
Broncos you may or.
Speaker 2 (02:04:40):
May not have heard about this in the preceding, days
But Major League baseball is rolling through their draft lottery
as we, speak and just moments, ago despite The astros
zero point three four percent chance of moving up into
the number one, spot they did not do. That they
WILL dft seventeenth as a result of the draft order
(02:05:03):
they're in the first. Round they also have the twenty
eighth pick in the first, round so they'll have an
opportunity to get to pretty nice future stars at seventeen
and twenty.
Speaker 1 (02:05:13):
Eight they're about halfway through the.
Speaker 2 (02:05:14):
Proceedings the Remaining American League west teams in the. Lottery
The rangers were in the. Lottery they'll draft sixteenth The
angels were in the. Lottery they'll draft twelfth and somewhere
in the top, nine and we'll update you as soon
as we have this. Information the fast rushing to the
(02:05:35):
top of the Standings Sacramento athletics will land a pick
somewhere in the.
Speaker 1 (02:05:40):
Top eight when they get their.
Speaker 2 (02:05:45):
Digs, yes The Major League Baseball draft lottery is relatively.
New they did it last year for the first.
Speaker 1 (02:05:50):
Time why did they do.
Speaker 2 (02:05:52):
That they just decided to implement that as some sort
of we want to even things out in the draft
because the, tanking like some of these, teams there's really
nothing they can. Do they are tanking if you, want
but that's not really what is, happening but it does
hurt them a.
Speaker 1 (02:06:10):
Lot The a's will draft, eighth so that's. Good outside
the top. Six the the as are going to have
an eighth. Pick, well that's, TERRIFYING i, know really.
Speaker 2 (02:06:20):
Good there are a couple of teams that did not
make the playoffs that do not have the opportunity to
draft to win the lottery because they're trying to prevent
teams from having the number one or two pick.
Speaker 1 (02:06:31):
Over and over and over and over and. Over when
does THE Nfl draft lottery get. Implemented so what would you?
Speaker 2 (02:06:36):
Do give, Me give me you got just a couple
of seconds to think it through and a couple of
seconds to tell me how you'd implement. That BECAUSE i
actually had a conversation today about The browns and that very.
Speaker 1 (02:06:47):
Thing The.
Speaker 2 (02:06:48):
BROWNS i really Think Kevin stefanski. KNOWS i think he
knows he's getting fired and and he's not trying to
stick it to the team the twenty twenty Three coach
of The year because for whatever, REASON i, mean there
really is no good reason to go for two on
the first. Opportunity and if they make, it like management's
going to be ticked off because now you're only down,
(02:07:11):
six and when you score the second touchdown and you
just kick it and you. Win the last thing management
wants at this point in the, season you, know as
better a draft pick as we can, get which they,
have they have their own. Pick we want shot on
the field, plenty we want to learn more about. Him that's,
great but we don't want to. Win and so he
he went for two and they didn't get, it and
(02:07:32):
he really he backed himself in a corner on the second.
Speaker 1 (02:07:35):
One, well we're down. Eight we just. Scored now we're down.
TWO i can't kick.
Speaker 2 (02:07:40):
The extra point, here that's too, Obvious SO i have
to go for. Two But i'm going to Take shadoor
off the. Field and he was questioned about how often
they actually repped this play during the, week and he
didn't want to get into, it but he acknowledged that
the player that screwed it, up even though he didn't
acknowledge it was a screw, up he, said, yeah we repped.
Speaker 1 (02:07:57):
It he repped.
Speaker 2 (02:07:58):
It they ran a play that looked like they didn't
know what they were, doing and it probably would have
worked if they, did but they. Lost scored twenty nine.
Points they lost to The, titans a team they're actually
battling with for draft position, yep and they got a
game closer to them by losing to. Them it's hard
to make all these things play in the football locker,
(02:08:19):
room and which WHY i don't think teams really tank
because most of the players in the locker room don't
have any idea what their future is going to, be
whether they're under contract or, not so they're not gonna.
Speaker 1 (02:08:26):
Go out there and try it. All The texans played
a game like that on the final regular season game
of the season early two thousand and. Six it was
The Reggie Bush bowl In San. FRANCISCO i was on the,
field great, weather great me And Tony, banks And tony
was like trying to you, know, win And i'm screaming
(02:08:47):
from the. SIDE i was on the sideline working the.
PARABOLICS i was, like, hey, man what are you? Doing
the number one pick is at stake.
Speaker 2 (02:08:54):
Here of Course Mario williams is at stake. Here nobody
nobody was even Missing Mario. Bull that's what it, was,
Right how do you think The? Marioble what do you?
Think what overtime THAT i, KNOW i mean talk about
making you? Sweat and the weather was so bad they
actually called us up front into the to the.
Speaker 1 (02:09:12):
Booth but what do you? Think what's his? Face was? Thinking,
well first of, all since your memory is so, awesome
what all do you actually remember about the? GAME i
don't remember a, TIME i really. Don't So Tony banks
was playing to win right to the.
Speaker 23 (02:09:30):
End well he.
Speaker 1 (02:09:31):
Played he threw a twenty five yard touchdown pass start that,
day or did he come IN i couldn't remember if
car was hurt already or if he got hurt in that,
game and you.
Speaker 2 (02:09:41):
Think David carr was out there for eleven, attempts then
he got, hurt, okay and Comes.
Speaker 1 (02:09:46):
TONY i could have sworn That tony replaced. Somebody it
wasn't that he.
Speaker 2 (02:09:50):
Started he threw a touchdown pass midway through the third.
Quarter by the, way when that, HAPPENED i was like,
yes and The texans took the. Lead they went up
seventeen to, ten and then he threw another touchdown pass
five minutes later to The niners to tie the game
up at. Seventeen you may or may not have pumped my.
Fist nobody scored in the fourth quarter and they went to,
overtime where The texans lost on a field. Goal the
(02:10:12):
quarterback of the other team two thousand and five, season
he was just Talking texans this last weekend on set
ON Nfl. Countdown fitzpatrick AN Nfl. Countdown, oh he wasn't
in a league. Yet that was AN o seven draft
pick out of THE Ivy.
Speaker 1 (02:10:31):
League he sits next To randy moss on When rex
was out of, town which he was this. WEEKEND i
can't play leg was broken BY Jj watt And Kareem.
Jackson Alex smith was The niners quarterback that because he
was the number one overall, pick and then they traded
him To Kansas city where he was a mentor to
some kid from The Testis tech thateped him on the
(02:10:53):
bench for a. Year gordy didn't want was at Least
steinberg was his agent coming. Around, Yep, hey you want
to have my quarterback on your. Show he's this kid
From Texas. Tech we really like, him and And gordy was,
LIKE i guess, also they could Draft Mario. Williams, yeah so,
again who is THE gm? Again what was his? Name? Chuck,
(02:11:13):
Yeah Charlie. Castley see now on the, Record we're gonna
Get Mario williams right, now off the. RECORD i know
What i'm. Doing he had the best draft ever except
for the number one. Pick everybody in that. Draft Owen
daniels was in that, Draft Eric winston was in that.
Draft Demico ryans was in that. Draft but the first round,
pick which was number one, overall could have Been Reggie,
(02:11:35):
bush should have Been Vince. Young but you thought you
could Fix David, Carr GARY, kubiakx you Drafted Mario. Williams
you let him play his rookie quarterback or a rookie,
contract and then you let him go sign With buffalo
because he was that underwhelming And David carr was no
longer the? Quarterback why didn't you Take Vince?
Speaker 2 (02:11:54):
YOUNG i, mean if you wanted eighty nine hundred and
sixty four career passing, yards you should.
Speaker 1 (02:11:59):
Have he would have had. More maybe nobody wanted him
In nashville before he even got, there except For bud who's.
Dead now that's how that. Went, yes he would have
definitely been better than. THAT i mean with his head
coach would have hated him with the naked bootleg offense
in his zone blocking offensive. Lineman With Vince young who's
(02:12:20):
like six foot, five two hundred and fifty pounds of
granite and can run and? Throw are you kidding?
Speaker 6 (02:12:27):
Me?
Speaker 1 (02:12:27):
Now give Him Arian, Foster now give Him Andre. JOHNSON i,
mean now give Him Owen. Daniels why not just Give
David Carr Mario williams to be done with. IT i
just it's the greatest what if In texans? History that one?
Speaker 10 (02:12:44):
Is?
Speaker 1 (02:12:44):
Yeah what else is? There what are the other? Candidates
we already talked about it earlier, Today which one's that?
Take Julius. Peppers, okay that's probably that's a good candidate
because it was the first overall pick and Not Tony,
boselli who was ever gonna. Play it's just an expansion,
guy all. Right Chandler rome joins us live from The Winter.
(02:13:07):
Meetings when we come, Back football at.
Speaker 2 (02:13:10):
Five today will Be baseball at five Today live from
The Winter meetings Is Chandler roma of The Athletic. Covers
The astros Of Major League baseball joins us from, there
where they've just concluded The Major League Baseball draft. Lottery
The astros had an infinitesimal chance of moving up to
the number one. Spot they will draft seventeenth go along
with their twenty eighth. Selection we'll see What Dana brown
and crew can do with that and the money that
(02:13:31):
goes along with. It but most people are paying a
little bit more attention to player movement here at The Winter, Meetings,
CHANDLER i imagine some of the moves today cut a
little bit of your, Attention but more likely the conversations
you've had with people in the, Organization Joe spoda And
Dana brown among. Them what's your idea of what they
think they actually can get done for this team from
(02:13:53):
a starting pitching standpoint moving, Forward.
Speaker 25 (02:13:56):
YEAH i think they're very confident that they've got frameworks
of some potential trades that excite. Them you, KNOW i
reported last night that That shane boz is somebody that
is near the top of their list as a. Target
that doesn't mean they're going to get. Him that doesn't
mean it's closer it's. Done shane bos is in demand
from a lot of, teams but you, know identified a
(02:14:18):
couple of guys that the that The rays like in
their system on their major league. Roster but it's not just.
Him you, know they've Got they've got irons in the
fire with a couple of other. Teams it make no
mistake like most of their activity this offseason is.
Speaker 4 (02:14:32):
Going to come via.
Speaker 25 (02:14:32):
TRADE i do not envision them signing any substantial free agent.
DEAL i don't envision them playing at the top of that.
Market this is going to be a trade first off.
Season and it's you, know really started. Here EVERYTHING i
have heard from both you, know their employees and just
people around the league is, that you, know The astras
(02:14:53):
focus really is in the trade, market and it is for,
young controllable starting. Pitching so guys that not only will
affect the twenty twenty Six, astros but you, know maybe
two and three years down the, road.
Speaker 2 (02:15:05):
Would you say that the likelihood of The astros getting
one of those pitchers would be including a player that
played for, them were their uniform is a Major league
talent from needing to use that as part of a.
Speaker 23 (02:15:19):
Deal.
Speaker 25 (02:15:21):
Yeah, YEAH i, mean, Obviously Jake myers is the name
that's getting thrown around a lot right, now and he's
being heavily talked. About you, know there's a lot of
teams that are interested in. Him but you, know, actually
Something i'm writing today that has really kind of crystallized here,
is you, know listening To Joe spotted talk yesterday kind
of about his initial tentative plans for the, roster it's
becoming clearer and clearer, that, like it's not only to
(02:15:43):
be feasible for them to carry Both Christian walker And
East Sade paratus on this, roster just for a number of.
Reasons you, Know joe said yesterday that he Wants Jordan
alvarez to D h the majority of the season this.
Speaker 4 (02:15:55):
Year he intimated.
Speaker 25 (02:15:57):
Strongly That Josel tuve will probably spend most of his
time at second base with those two spots, filled, LIKE
i don't see a world in which they can give
both of those, guys you, know regular every day at
That SO i just look reading between the, lines judging
what everyone has to, say it would seem to me
that this only increase the, likelihood in my, opinion that
(02:16:19):
one Of Estoc paradis Or Christian walker gets. Moved Estoc
paradus has been coveted right now by The Red. Sox
they really really like, him and that's something that you,
know there's certainly some momentum. There i'm not saying it's,
close not saying it's, done but certainly that they've talked
to The Red sox About Estoc. Paradis there's some other
things that they're talking, about but that that is crystallized
to me, that, Yes Jake myers is certainly a guy
(02:16:41):
that could be.
Speaker 3 (02:16:41):
Moved but it's.
Speaker 25 (02:16:42):
Coming clearer and clearer that they're gonna have to solve
this infield logjam by by moving one of those guys as.
Speaker 1 (02:16:47):
Well do the trades that you're referencing do they excite
you as much as they excite the?
Speaker 25 (02:16:52):
ASTROS i, Mean i'm probably not the person asked that
LIKE i don't really. Care very few things excite, me,
right you. Know but, look but BUT i, think you,
KNOW i think they could do a lot worse than,
LIKE i, Mean Shane boss is Really i'm going off
of like What i've, reported, Right Like Shane bo's is
(02:17:13):
like former first round, Pick like it's top of the
rotation style. Stuff AND i, think you, know as you're
going to see with some of the other stuff that
maybe starts to come out of guys they are, targeting
guys are talking about you, know a lot of these
guys at first, glance maybe fans will be a little
tentative because they're not going for the established guys because
(02:17:35):
all the established guys are in free, agency all the
established guys that have done it and that have that
track record and that they just they're not going to.
Speaker 1 (02:17:41):
Play in that.
Speaker 25 (02:17:42):
Pool so they're going to rely on their pitching development.
Infrastructure they're pitching infrastructure to you, know if they get
some of these young starters that they want to come
in here and do what they've done with a ton of,
guys which is make them, better improve the things they,
do and turn.
Speaker 1 (02:17:59):
Them in to a better version of.
Speaker 25 (02:18:00):
Themselves SO i think quite, frankly you, know there if
some of these trades do go, THROUGH i don't think
it's going to be guys that are going to excite
maybe the casual. Fan BUT i think it's certainly it
certainly moves that you, know are contingent upon them continue
to do what they do, best which is developed.
Speaker 1 (02:18:18):
Pitching that's kind Of wex AND i were talking about.
That you, know that is their mo from a pitching,
standpoint at least over the, years is you get guys
sometimes to come in here and you you don't think,
that you don't think anything of the deal because it's
not a sexy name or, whatever and then the next,
thing you, know like even but even like With, KOKUCHI
i feel like that was he was more of an established,
(02:18:41):
name and yet he had his best TENURE i would
say in, years if not, ever with The astros because
of what they're able to do with that. Staff, yeah,
no IT'S.
Speaker 25 (02:18:51):
I, mean there's a lot of validity to. That you, know,
again if they are not going to pay the price
for a frontline, starter like there's a reason that like
these frontline starters and these established guys get to free
agency and that they command so much money because there's
more certainty, there there's more assurance there because.
Speaker 4 (02:19:09):
These guys have done it.
Speaker 25 (02:19:10):
Before when you get guys in, trades it's always it's
always kind of a. Crapshew BUT i think The astra is,
ACTUALLY i, know like The astras trust. There if there's
one thing with this franchise that you can, trust it
is their ability to, develop, identify and enhance. Pitchers and
SO i think they're really going to rely on that
as they're going through These they're looking for guys, with you,
(02:19:32):
know certain tendencies and characteristics that they, like a certain
profile they think they can help. Improve AND i think
that's gonna be a big deal going.
Speaker 2 (02:19:41):
Forward do you Think Josh, miller the returning pitching, coach
And Ethan, katz their assistant pitching, coach can help develop
and Enhance Justin verlander next?
Speaker 25 (02:19:50):
YEAR i, mean If Jim crane wants it, done, sure.
YEAH i think you, know, look, everyone it's it's kind
of funny how this is like taking on a life
of its own when Like Justin verlander was literally at
Dyk And park last year with The giants and stood
outside the third base dugout and, said oh, Yeah i'd
love Like i'm always open to coming back. HERE i
(02:20:12):
want to come back. Here like, said, like when The
giants offered me this, CONTRACT i Called Jim crane to
basically see if you could match, it and at the
Time jim told him that they couldn't do. That so
it's not as if you, know we're making this up
a report like this Is Justin verlander has said, this
and like we know how close he And jim. Are
he And Jim craine are very. Close it's one of
(02:20:33):
these things, where you, KNOW i think if the price is,
RIGHT i think if both sides agree that the price is,
right THEN i think it certainly could. Happen but, Again
Justin berlinder had a very nice season last year and
they had fifteen million dollars last, year And i'm gonna
guess he's not going to want a decrease of that,
salary and certainly not a market decrease of that.
Speaker 1 (02:20:55):
Salary and from WHAT i.
Speaker 25 (02:20:56):
Understand and talking to people and you, know seeing kind
of what they are willing to spend if they had
to get into the free agent, pool you, Know i'm
not sure that they could they could match that right,
now they can match What burlander. Wants but you, know
we'll see if the off season goes, on you, know
as we get in Late, january If Justin burlander doesn't
have a team, yet then maybe they could go back to.
(02:21:17):
That but, YEAH i think that's much more of A
Jim crane direct negotiation on that.
Speaker 1 (02:21:23):
One Are whitney And kate as close As jim And?
JUSTIN i don't.
Speaker 4 (02:21:29):
KNOW i feel Like i'm.
Speaker 25 (02:21:30):
LEAVING i feel Like i'm really putting myself in a.
Buy and IF i even answer this question with any
sort of defendative, Answer i'm just gonna go WITH i don't.
Speaker 9 (02:21:38):
Know on that.
Speaker 25 (02:21:39):
ONE i have SEEN i have seen both of, them you,
know walking around the ballpark in certain times. Together don't
know if that means, anything But i'm sure They've i'm
sure they've shared a. Meal how about. That i'm sure
they've shared a meal.
Speaker 2 (02:21:50):
Together i'm talking With Scandler rome Of The athletic Covering
Major League baseball and The Houston astros obviously for you,
guys and joining us here on the eight team from
The winter meetings In. Orlando three free agent And astros
are certainly going to help direct the path of whatever
happens in free agency With Kyle, Tucker Alex, bregman And,
Frombervaldez what if, anything do you think the impact is
for where they might go and the money they might
(02:22:12):
sign for for Fromber, valdez the fact That Dylan sees
got the deal he got From, toronto and In Kyle tucker's,
case the deal that was made today between The phillies
And Kyle schwarber at five, years one, fifty where it
might send them and what type of contract they might look.
At if you feel like those deals impacted.
Speaker 25 (02:22:29):
It, WELL i don't really think The schwarber deal Impacts
tucker that, much just Because schwarber's very much more of
A dh only he. Plays he can play some first,
base can stick them in one of the corners THE
dh Like kyle's certainly a five tool. Player he provides. Defense.
LIKE i don't equate that contract to maybe What tucker
is going to, do BUT i think Certainly dylan cees his.
(02:22:50):
Contract he was probably very happy the day he agreed
to that. DEAL i Think fromber was probably like the
second happiest person when he probably saw, that because, look
that sets the. Market they Are fromber and his representatives
are going to try to get something close to.
Speaker 4 (02:23:04):
That will they get?
Speaker 25 (02:23:05):
It i'm not, sure BUT i think that one is
probably a more apt parallel of like this is what
this is what you can expect With. Fromber SO i
will say That schwarber And tucker do have the same,
agent which is kind of. Interesting so maybe in that,
aspect like maybe that does, Something But i'm NOT i
don't think those two correlate just because of you, know
(02:23:25):
the different positional. Versatility what Else tucker brings other than
just his?
Speaker 1 (02:23:30):
Offense your gut instinct tells you That fromber is pitching
where next?
Speaker 3 (02:23:34):
Season the coolest Stuff.
Speaker 25 (02:23:38):
I'm gonna say The Baltimore, orioles just because you Know,
Mike michaelias And sigma dal running their front. Office they're
they're familiar With. Fromber mike And sigg had kind of
gotten out of have they had gone To baltimore by
the Time fromber really you, know bostoned into his. Own
but there's some familiary. There they need a they have
(02:23:59):
made the bones about. It they need a top of
the rotation style. Ace they have money to spend that
that to me would seem right, now if you ask
me my, gut that would be. It BUT i could,
see you, KNOW i could see The mets being a.
PLAYER i could see The cubs maybe being a. Player you,
KNOW i don't, know BUT i right now i'd probably
say The oriels really really.
Speaker 1 (02:24:21):
Quickly did you have a Favorite Scott boris pun from the?
Speaker 25 (02:24:24):
Day SO i didn't listen to THE i wasn't in
the scrum Because i've just made LIKE i needed to
use my time. Better and LIKE i, know The astros
aren't signing any bores. Clients but the The, terek The,
saber the saber Proof, tiger and About Arrek scuball and
it's a mystery machine without scoobs And Tiger.
Speaker 3 (02:24:46):
Town that.
Speaker 11 (02:24:46):
Was that was.
Speaker 25 (02:24:47):
Legendary what a what?
Speaker 1 (02:24:48):
A what a prolific? Man why do you say About rangers?
Again he Was rangerius in the, posts.
Speaker 25 (02:24:53):
Armed and armed And rangers in the.
Speaker 1 (02:24:55):
Postseason. Unbelievable, chandler you're the. Best we love how you
answer all of our, questions including the ones that force
you to be diplomatic every time you come, on and
we appreciate you taking the. Time have fun out there all?
Speaker 3 (02:25:08):
Right thanks.
Speaker 1 (02:25:09):
Us Chandler rome of The athletic here On Sports talk
seven ninety always brings the. Goods we'll discuss that and
some shams rumors. Next when you saw and thanks again
A chandler rum with The athletic for joining. Us last,
segment when you Saw Shane boz as a potential trade,
target which again there's other teams interested and maybe even,
(02:25:31):
teams probably even teams that could presumably offer a better trade.
PACKAGE i don't know what it would look like for The.
ASTROS i don't know who's going. OUT i think it's
a major league. Talent, yeah, well so what DO i
think Of? Shane? Yeah is it somebody they should be?
Targeting slash you would be actually pretty excited about because
he spells fromber to an.
Speaker 2 (02:25:51):
EXTENT i would be ecstatic if that were the. CASE
i would definitely not be counting on.
Speaker 1 (02:25:57):
That, well he has.
Speaker 2 (02:25:58):
Talent he has an unbelie believable. Talent he has first round.
Talent it was a first round. Pick he's from the
areas From Concordia. Lutheran but then the coaching staff does their.
Speaker 1 (02:26:07):
Thing that's. Great Concordia. Lutheran on twenty nine to, twenty There's.
Speaker 2 (02:26:10):
TOMBALL a little bit more to his story because he's
twenty six and he was a first round pick out
of high school with extremely high.
Speaker 1 (02:26:18):
Expectations this is a twenty seventeen draft. Pick, well great.
Year his major league.
Speaker 2 (02:26:26):
Resume definitely doesn't match that because he's had a lot of.
Injuries see that's the. Problem he pitched a couple.
Speaker 1 (02:26:35):
Times in twenty, one a couple times in twenty, two
missed all of twenty. Three sounds very.
Speaker 2 (02:26:40):
Force whitley really got his first opportunity to establish himself last,
season and he did for half a season and has
some really good, numbers has some really good, starts started
to get acclimated to getting major league hitters out, regularly
and then for the most part this, year the guy
made thirty one. Starts he answered the. Bell this is
a really great sign for his. FUTURE i, thought really
great sign for The rais and that they have multiple
(02:27:00):
seasons in the future of club control and these are
just the type of players pitchers that.
Speaker 1 (02:27:05):
They would not want to.
Speaker 2 (02:27:07):
MOVE i imagine they have another fifty thousand players in
their system that they can back this up. With and
they did land the number two pick in the draft
via the draft lottery just a few minutes.
Speaker 1 (02:27:16):
Ago White sox got number, one.
Speaker 2 (02:27:19):
But he was very, inconsistent which is kind of expected
for really his first time as a full time starter
for a full. Season finished the season, brilliantly had three
shutout starts in the final month of the. Season but you,
know the month before that he couldn't really get out
of the early innings and it just had a bad
month of. Time the month before that he was pretty
good his. Stuff is that exactly what you want me to,
(02:27:41):
hear what the fans want to, hear what the fans,
Know get him, here watch what The astros do with.
Him And i'm a fully fully behind. That i'd be
a little concerned about WHAT i, mentioned but absolutely a
PITCHER i would target just like they.
Speaker 1 (02:27:54):
ARE i do wonder what it would take because of
all the things you just laid out kind of gives
you a better idea of you, know it's not going
to be as steep as you might.
Speaker 2 (02:28:04):
Think, Yeah i'm not worried about how much it costs
from an asset, standpoint who it is or what. Prospects
so you'll probably send them somebody in your minor league,
system and probably no. One probably is a much much
younger player that might not even be very high in
your prospect.
Speaker 1 (02:28:17):
List tell you what ELSE i heard him say without
him saying, It And i'm not putting words in his.
Mouth i'm just telling you what it sounded like to.
Me they're going to Trade Christian walker this.
Speaker 2 (02:28:25):
Offseason, WELL i think that's when he said they have
to trade one of. Them one of them is actually
desired by other. Teams but he's also desired By houston
right for all the reasons other teams Like Zach, perettis
The Red sox among, them The astros, like and The
astros are a significantly better offensive team when he's part
of their. Lineup, now if he's part of their lineup
at the expense Of Christian, walker because there's just no
(02:28:47):
positional flexibility to keep them both, here then you've got
to balance that part of it, out and you have
to add to. It what do you lose from, Scoopage
because Admittedly Christian walker is elite over at first. Base
he Saved Jeremy paynea ten error is easy this. Year
he saved their fielders and other ten errors on throws,
easy maybe. More AND i don't know. That Esach, perettis
(02:29:08):
who's to a certain, extent gonna have to learn first.
Base i'm sure he, knows and he's been out there
and he's taking. Ground he's done some, things but he
hadn't play it on it every day base as the
major league. Level and now you're gonna ask him to do,
that you're going to be giving something up, defensively and he's.
Speaker 1 (02:29:21):
Not probably you, know he was perfectly adequate at third.
Speaker 2 (02:29:25):
BASE i think he was better than people thought from
a soft hands and being able to if it was
hit close enough to, him he would make the. Play
he has zero, range and that's the hot, corner Right
and that's why he doesn't play second, base is the
fact that he doesn't have zero. Range But chandler pointed
out what seemed to be the path they almost assuredly
were going to. Take these guys are not gonna be
positionally flexible next. YEAR i don't think Al tuove is
(02:29:48):
gonna make ten starts in left field next. Year he's
gonna play second, base and the days is not in the,
Lineup he's not gonna be in left.
Speaker 1 (02:29:54):
Field he's gonna be THE. Dh but the days he's
THE dh.
Speaker 2 (02:29:58):
Doesn't sound Like Jordan alvarez to be your left fielder,
Either so it makes things, very very difficult on a
manager to figure out how to put a lineup together
when you have a permanent designated, hitter which is What
joe spot is forecasting With.
Speaker 1 (02:30:12):
Jordan what you're talking about is not because of any
reason other than they saw what they were with those
guys playing those. Positions they didn't like.
Speaker 2 (02:30:21):
It, yeah Al tuove is a. Blow altuve is among
the worst left fielders in baseball.
Speaker 1 (02:30:28):
And base, runners, well they can't substitute that. Out if
he makes it onto the, basis he will be running the.
Speaker 2 (02:30:35):
Bases he's among the worst second Basement, Defensively he's just
a terrible fielder at this point in his career. Unfortunately
and he's going to be in the lineup if he's
healthy one hundred and forty five hundred and fifty. Times
so it's WHAT i said at the beginning of the.
Year some of the analytics showed why they put him
in left, field especially with certain. Pitchers he can have
less of an impact on the game in left. Field
(02:30:55):
maybe he sees no, baseballs maybe he sees. Three if
he can adequately handle three plays in a nine inning,
game then by all means stick them out. There it's
much more likely with some of the pictures that they
had and some of the pictures they'll have this, year
that while there seem like fewer high magnitude plays at second,
base there's just flat out more of, them and this
ground ball could be a double play instead it's just
(02:31:17):
the one.
Speaker 1 (02:31:17):
Out this ground ball could be a ground out of
four to. Three he doesn't get to.
Speaker 2 (02:31:21):
It all sorts of reasons why they moved him off of,
there but they don't have the personnel anymore to make
that a.
Speaker 1 (02:31:27):
REALITY i don't think this. Year so, YEAH i agree
with the first part of what you.
Speaker 2 (02:31:31):
Said they would love it if someone, said, look if
you take on x amount of the forty million That
Christian walkers still do over the next two, years and
in doing, so we will augment the prospect package that
we're giving up for, him Then i'm sure they would
move on From walker and Make perettis the everyday first
base and an infield Of, Perettis, Altuve, correa And.
Speaker 1 (02:31:53):
PAENA i think that's a perfectly good way to enter
the twenty twenty sixth. Season he's depressing having this kind
of conversation where you're having to kind of cobble things
together or do it this way While Edwin diaz lands
with The dodgers with more.
Speaker 2 (02:32:09):
Money, well it's not necessarily none of the things we
talked about where monetary were financially.
Speaker 1 (02:32:14):
Base they don't have player spaces to put these. Guys
the whole conversation that we had With chandler was also
about the fact that they're not going out and signing
marquee free agents and they never really, have not the
marquee marquie, one and in doing, so they've done nothing
but win thus. Far, yeah but it's because of the
core that they had trafted after losing three hundred games
(02:32:36):
over three.
Speaker 2 (02:32:36):
Seasons, Right so in the period of time that we're
in right, now where they don't have those, prospects they're
not going to, say, well we want to keep, winning
so let's just go spend a bunch of money and
this is how we're now going to. Operate they're going
to keep operating the same way and suffer the results
that are coming from it because they just don't simply
have those players in the. System, now maybe they'll get
(02:32:57):
lucky and The Kyle tucker trade will that a really
strong player In Cam, smith not just a guy who
was on the team last, year which is essentially all he.
WAS i think the idea that he's gonna be, very
very good still. Exists they Have Dana brown running the
twenty twenty sixth, draft where they now have two of
the top twenty eight.
Speaker 1 (02:33:14):
Picks. Here if you draft a college baseball player at
seventeen or twenty, eight you're gonna get a good.
Speaker 2 (02:33:21):
Player, well he shouldn't be in the minor leagues very
long in my. Opinion, right maybe the whole, year maybe
less than the whole. Year is the short period of.
Speaker 1 (02:33:29):
Time this is Where dana is at his best in my,
opinion for all the shortcomings you think he's had here
as THE gm of The, astros and for all the
interference that may have been done to him doing that
job by the owner or whatever. Whoever jeff, bagwell what
(02:33:49):
you don't think sometimes it was a little bit of
a wely have they putting his fingerprints on some?
Speaker 2 (02:33:53):
Things he put his fingerprints on some baseball, cards for,
sure the backs of. Them, right the important. PART i
don't care if the picture SAYS i just want the?
Numbers did?
Speaker 1 (02:34:04):
You are you shocked by the, way just on our
way out of this, segment That Anthony davis is a
trade target In. Dallas not at. All but, okay you
already shipped Off. Luca then you got the number one,
pick and you shipped Off, luca and you tried to, say,
hey but we Got Anthony davis to pair With. Kyrie
who's saying that the guy who got fired?
Speaker 2 (02:34:26):
Exactly and, Ownership but ownership makes decisions based on what's
The they don't care if they got him or. Not
at this, point they know what the egg is on
their face no matter. WHAT i don't think moving on
From Anthony davis is going to Make dallas.
Speaker 1 (02:34:38):
Fail you're more.
Speaker 2 (02:34:39):
Mad if You're. Kyrie why would you want to stay, There?
Kyrie they're gonna win big With kyrie And Cooper. Flag
does that sound?
Speaker 3 (02:34:47):
Right?
Speaker 1 (02:34:48):
No, okay that's why you move. On you're.
Speaker 2 (02:34:50):
NOT i don't think you're super dissatisfied if you win
big with Neither Anthony davis Or Kyrie, irving because you
essentially built around your future Drafts Cooper flag AND i
know their future drafts are impact by a bunch of stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:35:00):
Already but what are you getting back From Anthony?
Speaker 2 (02:35:03):
DAVIS i, mean there was ONE gm that thought he
was worth trading something for You're Nico.
Speaker 1 (02:35:09):
Harrison maybe there's. Another at this, POINT i mean he's
going to play a half and get hurt again the
day he arrives wherever he.
Speaker 2 (02:35:17):
Goes Anthony, davis when, healthy is obviously a, plus very
very plus LEVEL nba player and can't impact winning and
had to get sized up for a championship.
Speaker 1 (02:35:28):
Ring clearly he's going be a White Yao. Ming but
he's very injury. Prone god what nothing close to? That
what he's injury? Prone but come, on Doctor Tom clanton.
Speaker 2 (02:35:39):
Disagree ming played his way through the first however many
seasons of his.
Speaker 1 (02:35:43):
Career then he had a foot injury and that was
that he was. Done Anthony davis is not on the
road to. Retirement we shall see how this affects other
big men who don't weigh as much As Yao, ming,
admittedly but are still very very close to his. Height
in our running up down a ninety four foot hardwood
floor in case you missed, it, Next.
Speaker 2 (02:36:04):
I've just been handed an urgent piece of, information urgent and.
Horrifying i'm not horrified by this at.
Speaker 1 (02:36:10):
All that was the.
Speaker 2 (02:36:11):
Line Jackson state might be. Horrified they're playing The cougars
tomorrow night Over Teeta, center and we have a four
pack of tickets to give away to that basketball game tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (02:36:21):
Night we also have a pair of tickets to SEE.
Tso WHAT'S? Tso?
Speaker 2 (02:36:26):
Tso, yeah we've been giving the tickets away all, week
so yesterday and now.
Speaker 1 (02:36:31):
Today oh do you THINK i was paying attention when
you were doing? That the best OF tso and? More
The ghost Of Christmas? Eve oh that, Yeah Trans Siberian orchestra.
Speaker 2 (02:36:41):
And nobody calls it. That what else do we have tickets?
For we had a four pack of tickets for an
event with pit. Passes what's that? Event that's Called Monster.
Jam so we'll have tickets To Monster Jam party pat pit.
Passes four pack of tickets. There those three events will
give those tickets away in the final segment of the,
program a couple of things to get you started with
(02:37:02):
on in case you missed. It for the second day
in a, row The texans were playing on the waiver.
Wire they have added a defensive tackle and it has
cost them a. Safety Jalen, mills who had already used
all of his elevations while on The texans practice, squad
was signed to the active roster Before sunday's. Game he
then contributed three special teams snaps where he was let
(02:37:25):
go today to make room for this new addition to the.
Roster texans adding Nae Kwon jones claimed off waivers from
The Los Angeles. Chargers chargers obviously were winners last, night
so they stay ahead Of.
Speaker 1 (02:37:38):
Houston they won twenty two nineteen in. Overtime they get
to nine and.
Speaker 2 (02:37:41):
Four The texans at eight and, five continue to hold
down the final wild card spot in THE, afc and
after The Daniel jones, injury he's been placed on injured.
Reserve Anthony richardson is already uninjured. Reserve for The Indianapolis,
colts they are two current rostered quarterbacks on the practice,
(02:38:04):
squad include Youngster Brett rippin and Oldster Philip. Rivers their
current loan quarterback on the active roster might start this,
week but no definitive word yet From. Indianapolis that Is Riley.
Leonard all, right in case you missed, It, josh what
else do we?
Speaker 31 (02:38:21):
Have let's get into some of those those quotes That
Chandler rome was talking about From Joe espota on how
he thinks that maybe somebody's gonna be, moved whether It's Christian,
Walker Esach. PERETTIS i think a big key to that
is what they're gonna do With Jose. Altuve here's the
spottest thoughts On altuve in playing second.
Speaker 6 (02:38:38):
Base you know, WHAT i like the fact that he
is open to helping to do whatever it, takes you,
know help the.
Speaker 1 (02:38:43):
Team BUT i think.
Speaker 6 (02:38:45):
Second base is his flying. POSITION i think we're going
to see him play there more this, season you, know
giving us some starts in left. Field that's something THAT
i will sit down and talk to him about.
Speaker 2 (02:38:54):
That just like we, SAID i think he will play
second and we'll see very limited time in left. Field
we didn't get into it With. Chandler we'll continue to
have these discussions as the off season unfolds and maybe
get a better idea from The astros personnel about what
their feelings are about their outfield options as we sit here,
Today Cam, Smith Zach, Cole Jacob, Melton Jake, myers the
(02:39:18):
bulk of your outfield options where you truly want them
to be out in the.
Speaker 1 (02:39:22):
Outfit this isn't a shot At joe a spot at.
All but can you ever remember in recent memory An
astro's manager admittedly probably wasn't asked these questions, either but
answering questions where you're like directly, thinking, oh they're definitely
gonna trade somebody because of the way he's, talking and he's.
Not i'm not saying he's saying we're gonna trade, somebody
(02:39:42):
but you know he's just not with that comming any,
right he's talking About. Alto IT'S i just think that
the way that that subject has been brought, Up Like
i've had people say to me inside the order they
Think Christian walker's getting.
Speaker 4 (02:39:55):
Traded, well here's.
Speaker 1 (02:39:57):
WHY i, mean it's not a we don't like you
Even and if that's outproved a factors into all of
this because he's.
Speaker 2 (02:40:02):
On the roster and he's not getting. Traded but he's
an infielder. Too it doesn't even matter where he. Is
they don't have room for all these.
Speaker 1 (02:40:08):
Players but remember the conversation we had a good chunk
of this last year where you would look forward to
twenty twenty six and you would, think, Well Eastoc paretis
will probably be the guy who spells Jose al two.
Basins they want Jose al tuove and left. Field, now
all of a sudden it's he's never playing left field.
Again oh my. Gosh that was.
Speaker 2 (02:40:25):
Horrible and when this all got started with the acquisition
Of perettas and the idea That altuve could play multiple,
Positions Carlos corea was In. Minnesota, true that didn't help.
Things it helps things tremendously to, win but it doesn't
help you with the numbers. Game you have an everyday third,
basement you have an every day. Shortstop those positions are.
(02:40:46):
Filled but Between Christian, Walker jose Al, Tuve Estoc, perettis
and Jord On, alvarez you got a guy who can
only play. First you got a guy who can't play
any of the open. Positions you got a guy who
can't play second or left field very, well you got
a guy who you want to be your EVERYDAY. Dh
these are not ideal. Situations the best way to solve
it is to move. Somebody and it's not anybody whose
(02:41:08):
last name starts WITH. A it's a, logjam, baby what?
Speaker 1 (02:41:11):
Else?
Speaker 31 (02:41:13):
OKAY i thought this was kind of interesting because we've
wondered Esok. Perettis they were saying maybe D h for.
Him we know we can play, third But espata talking
about he could possibly play some second.
Speaker 4 (02:41:25):
BASE i need to.
Speaker 6 (02:41:26):
Keep our guys. HEALTHY i think a lot of these
players can play multiple. Positions perettis can play some, second,
third and first. Base it allows me to Keep correa
and Walk or. Healthy THE dh. Spot i'm also going
to use that spot to keep those guys off their feet.
Some so you, KNOW i got some really good players
that once they're, healthy it's a really good team to uh.
To it's gonna be a really tough team to.
Speaker 2 (02:41:47):
BE i don't blame him for saying that In. December
it's but it's. NONSENSE i, MEAN i don't know any
other way to say. It you're Not you're not Keeping
Esach perettis on the roster to get the occasional starts at, first, first,
third and. Second he's an everyday. Player you're better when
he's in the lineup every. Day there's no reason he
should be. Here if he is not in your everyday,
lineup that's not. Ideal you'd love to move somebody else
(02:42:09):
so he doesn't have to be the guy that's. Moved
but you're you're not gonna fill your lineup card every
day with a spot For peretis by bouncing him all
over the.
Speaker 1 (02:42:17):
Place he's Not Mauricio. Dubon he's. Not that's not what
you're doing with him too.
Speaker 2 (02:42:22):
Soon unless players are, hurt Like, maurcio never plays well
unless somebody's. Hurt if nobody's, hurt explain to me how
they're going to put this lineup together every.
Speaker 1 (02:42:30):
Day you're.
Speaker 23 (02:42:31):
Not.
Speaker 2 (02:42:31):
SO i appreciate what he, said but that's that's really
that's truly not what they're gonna do with. Them you,
know you Ard On, ALVAREZ i like to keep him
off his. Feet, well then you're dhing. Him, Okay well
then he socks not. DHING i, mean it just it
just doesn't. Work As James harden once, said what?
Speaker 3 (02:42:48):
Else?
Speaker 31 (02:42:49):
Okay and then, finally just how about something just warming the?
Heart what's it, Like Joe espada to Have Carlos correa. Back,
yeah it's just like he never left.
Speaker 1 (02:42:58):
Home.
Speaker 6 (02:42:58):
Man when he got, back it just we welcome open opens.
Speaker 4 (02:43:03):
Arms he's our.
Speaker 6 (02:43:03):
LEADER i think he's so much who wants to. Win
he's always always willing to reach out and help the young.
Players but he's veteran press as. Well he does on
both sides of the. Ball he was playing third. Base
he almost looks like he played there in his tired.
Career that's how good he. Is that's a talented he,
is And i'm excited to.
Speaker 1 (02:43:21):
Have him for the full.
Speaker 2 (02:43:22):
Season ninety four ops plus last year with The Minnesota
twins For Carlos, korea one hundred is, average so he's
a below average offensive player in his three hundred and
sixty four plate appearances there before the. Trade had two
hundred and twenty played appearances here With, houston and that
number went up to one seventeen one hundred seventeen ops.
Speaker 1 (02:43:41):
Plus it's a very good.
Speaker 2 (02:43:42):
Player it's not elite, level it's not our All star,
level but it's a plus offensive. Player seven eighty five
ops and all that was with very limited. Power he
only hits six homers in An astros. Uniform he only
had ten additional extra race, hits all of them. Doubles
but he slugged significantly better With houston than With.
Speaker 1 (02:44:03):
Minnesota but he also finished the year with numbers that
were far below WHAT i think they'd like to. See
he just needs a spring training back At cassemi in
a full season An asher's.
Speaker 2 (02:44:13):
Uniform, hell it'll be. Fine he's gonna be. Bored he's
gonna be lonely In. Kassimi what do you mean because
they spring training In West Palm.
Speaker 1 (02:44:21):
Beach, oh that's WHAT i. Meant you knew WHAT i.
MEANT i did know what you.
Speaker 2 (02:44:24):
Meant don't worry about raising the level of the music.

Scott boris puns today because he delivered them to the
media In orlando at The Winter. Meetings some that you
might not have heard because we didn't play them earlier
(02:45:52):
on the. Show one in, particular Since chandler brought it
up AS i set up the, QUESTION i want to
read it to. You Scott boris On Cy Young Award
Inner Tark. School he's part Of Boris. Corp scooble is
metrically dominant both in advanced and traditional. Measures he's truly
a saber proof. Tiger sab are if you want to
look at the tail of the tiger without. Scoobs there
(02:46:14):
are mystery machines did he do this every? Year he
does this every year multiple times because there ARE gm
meetings as. Well so that ONE i read to. You
but earlier today we played sound on four Different Boris
Corp players clients of, his played you the audio of his,
ridiculous stupid and hilarious Dad Jokie boris. Puns the answer
(02:46:36):
to the question, is just Tell josh any one of
those players that you heard audio From boris. About earlier
on the program seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
ninety uh played sound on four different, players all of
whom are obviously free agents looking For Major League baseball
teams to pay them lucrative amounts of money to pitch for,
(02:46:58):
them hit for, them field for, them guide teammates with, them,
whatever or playing the postseason for, them fill up the
gas tank for. Them just imagine how things could be
great for. Them there's a lot of different players that
could be but they are under The boris, umbrella and
you heard audio about them From scotti himself earlier on
the show seven went three two seven.
Speaker 1 (02:47:19):
NINETY i bet his hair was dyed when it. Happened you,
know he was.
Speaker 2 (02:47:22):
In town for the Ose Al Tuve day presser and
the five year extension that The astros signed with him
a couple of years. AGO i actually pulled up interviewed
him off to the side after he had his comments
at the podium and he was standing to off to
the right side of The astros press conference. Room and
for those of you that have seen some of the
videos we've posted over the years from inside the press conference,
(02:47:45):
room the media availability, room for when you are at the,
podium so to, speak.
Speaker 1 (02:47:49):
It's just full of great memory.
Speaker 2 (02:47:53):
Photos photos of The astros during, parades photos of the
first Day correa, Signed lance, Mccullor's Dusty baker's manager of The,
astros and just on and on and on of all
the great things we've seen over the, years some much
older than others when they've had Some hall Of famers
ceremonies in Their Astros hall Of, famers so some orange
jacket moments in. There but in this particular, case we
(02:48:15):
Had Scott boris off to the right side of the,
building off to the right side of the, table talking
about your client staying here, more talking to about you
think maybe you could get a deal done With Alex
bregman and then just last, YEAR i knew that this
was in my camera. Role when it came, up he
happened to be standing in front of a very specific
(02:48:36):
photo with a very SPECIFIC astro right over his. Shoulder
all these answering questions about is there a chance that
your client will sign for the most money somewhere else
and never be AN astro. Again and SO i posted
that picture right around the time That Scott boris added
this player to his client. Roster, Oh Jeremy. Panion it
(02:48:57):
just happened to be where he was. Standing And jeremy
was celebrating on the locker room after another postseason, victory
and just happened to be where he was in the.
Speaker 1 (02:49:03):
PICTURE i thought you were going to tell me it
was in front Of Alex, bregman AND i was going
to guess that the moment in the picture was his
walk off In game five over The dodgers in twenty. Seventeen,
well it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (02:49:13):
That Scott morris has a lot of time and money
invested In astro's, clients From Garrett, Cole lance, Mccullors Alex,
Bregman Hunter, brown now Obviously Jeremy, pania and you know
some of, them one of them Justin Verlant not to
who AM i thinking?
Speaker 1 (02:49:30):
Of that came? Back uh Oh, carlos, duh He's carlos
is A boris. Guy, YES i didn't know. That why
DO i think he was with somebody? Else you ever
think About we're always talking about the one guy on The,
astros that he's their, agent the actual act of this balancing,
(02:49:53):
act that this is for this guy and other super
agents like.
Speaker 2 (02:49:57):
Him but you have to dedicate a ton of time
to a, Guy well you also have a we don't.
HE i think it's by design and most of the
bigger agents same. Thing he's got how many agents working for? Him,
yeah he comes in at the end and cakes all the.
Credit he comes in at the end and acts like
he's the only one that did any work on this.
Speaker 1 (02:50:16):
Deal how much do they from the commission that he?
Gets that's WHAT i want to. Know, well that's part of.
It but, yeah, there you can't be in all these different.
Speaker 2 (02:50:23):
Places he can field a lot of the, calls he
can help formulate a lot of the, deals but it's
just there's only so much one person can, do especially
when you're putting pointing out a great point with all these, Agents,
LIKE i have a client he plays third base and he's,
awesome and he's twenty. NINE i also have a client
who plays third base and is awesome as twenty. NINE
i also have a client who's awesome and plays first
(02:50:43):
base and is twenty. Nine they're all competing against each. Other,
yes and you know the old cliche that has become
more and more prevalent. LATELY i, mean this fill in
the blank is gonna feed? Generations is gonna feed families for?
Generations it really. Does is he A Kyle tucker? Guy,
No Kyle.
Speaker 1 (02:51:01):
TUCKERS i believe he Is shoreber, though UH i think that's.
Correct so today he fed his family and several. Others,
well it's this is In schwarber's, case this is not
his first big, contract, Right, WELL i mean there's lots
of guys like. That it's the same thing's gonna be
said About Alex bregman. Later warber is also With, excel Not.
(02:51:23):
Bors oh, okay that's odd to the biggest of. Everybody
why seems like he, does Doesn't is he primarily? Baseball?
Yes And Drew rosenhollis is primarily. Football. Yes the guy
who has consulted For jerry, MAGUIRE.
Speaker 2 (02:51:43):
I don't know him well, enough BUT i feel like
this is right on the money BECAUSE i Think i've
heard this from, others like the performance Of jerry By
tom and the performance Of bob By. JAY i think
there was More drew In Bob, sugar no, Kidding jerry
means clearly not, likable, slimy and a. Scumbag but like
(02:52:06):
all these other agents we currently talk, about more Like
David mullagetta on THE nfl side and.
Speaker 1 (02:52:10):
Others who Loves Drew. Rosenhaus Drew rosenhaus his. Clients, Oh
i'm sorry that was the second, answer doing a phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (02:52:20):
Job he's the job he's getting paid. For those that
are paying him to do it love the work he.
DOES i don't HAVE i have a lot of celebrity
photos because of what we do for a. Living there's
not very many where it's clear in the photo that
the celebrity does not want to be taking that photo with.
Speaker 1 (02:52:35):
Me there's one of. Them where were? You right outside
Of Reliant stadium on my way INTO i think preseason
game number? Two so the second ever game In texans,
history first season Preseason we're standing Along kirby on the gym,
side like the weight room side of the. Entrance, yeah
on that side Where murworth is and all. That he's
(02:52:58):
on the. Phone of, course he has one arm kind
of around, me the other arm holding the, phone and
he's just barely looking at the. Camera he was busy.
Exactly i'm trying to think of back to that time
of his, career who he was probably negotiating some multi
million dollar deal. For and he did take the time at,
least but it's very clear he did not want to
(02:53:20):
be doing. It do you think when's the last time
you think he told a story about that? Photo the
next time will be the. First and that was not
even remotely the most rude PERSON i dealt with in
the preseason that, year Because warren sat took the cake
because he's a. JERK i was trying to tell him
that do the quick research on who was on the
team at the time and why he might have been. There,
(02:53:40):
uh who would have been his biggest?
Speaker 2 (02:53:41):
Calls, well their first home Preseason, no their first home
preseason game that year was Against.
Speaker 1 (02:53:46):
Miami, yeah there was A dolphins game WITH Sap He's
miami all the, Time so not just in The, hurricanes
but both of them had that in. Common but good.
Speaker 2 (02:53:55):
Stuff Reliance, stadium home of Uh drerozenhouse didn't know, that
AND Cj Stroud, NOW i hope everybody knew. That we
Heard boris puns About Ranger, Suarez, Tatsuyama, Eme Zach gallen
and of Course alex In.
Speaker 1 (02:54:08):
Wonderland you always Dream rosenows would never say armed and.
Rangerous everybody has their own.
Speaker 2 (02:54:13):
Stick we got an episode of The nightcap coming your
way next as soon as we wrap things up here
on THE A.
Speaker 1 (02:54:19):
Team we're gonna do that right now and send you
on into Your tuesday evening
