Speaker 1 (00:00):
Astros taking two out of three from the Pirates in
spite of the rain delay last night. And as we
get into that Cleveland series, we get chandeler Rome in
here of the Athletics. So all of the talk was
about what happened before the game, before the game even started.
In the how would you what's the word you would
describe the gesticulations we saw from Dana Brown there down

(00:23):
there on the field.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, I've never seen him that animated about anything. And
I mean Dana even said after the game, you know,
he usually does that behind closed door scene, usually doesn't
let that get out in public. It was a it
was a frustrating situation, I think for everyone. I think
it was a no win situation all around, because they
could have postponed the game last night, and then the

(00:47):
Astros and the and the Pirates would have had to
give up an off day later this season, which no
no team wants to do. No team wants to either
at the short by a day and go play a game.
And spurred you know, the Astros a couple mutual off
days that the two teams shared. It would have meant
the Astros were gonna play like eighteen nineteen in a

(01:08):
row if they would have put that game on the
off days. So it was a no win situation, and
I think Dana was just frustrated at the whole thing.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
And I don't think he meant to.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Lash out specifically at Don Kelly, the Peter of the Pirates,
but I think that was just the person that was
in his way and that's who kind of received his wrath.
But I guess all's well, that ends well, they won
the game from er Veldez pitched well, they won the series,
and they're on to Cleveland, but a little tired while
doing so.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yeah, late rival for sure in a series that you know,
the importance of it. Maybe at this point the season
might be enormous, but this is a team just like
Houston that roughly has the same record, certainly is in
the wild card chase. If the Tigers don't pull too
far away, they clearly could be a division where there's
a playoff caliber baseball team that they're going to face
over the next three days. But you know, spinning it

(01:59):
back over the last several Uh. What what are your
early impressions of Jacob Melton, Astros outfielder.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, I think he's I think he is exactly what
this roster is missing. He's a left handed bat with
athleticism that can put together a professional plate appearance. Now
he's also he's also a rookie. He's also played in
four big league games. He saw him, you know, he
faced Paul Schemes and he held his own. I mean,

(02:29):
he had a wonderful plate appearance through that nine pitch walk,
looked okay against Schemes. In the next night, punched out
three times and really didn't look competitive. And then last
night against Mitch Keller, a guy that had been very,
very tough on rioties all year and susceptible against left
handed hitting, Jacob Melton, the low left handed hitter in

(02:49):
the lineup, did a bunch of the damage. So you
see what he can bring. He can bring balance, he
can bring something to that back into that line up,
that Joe Spata, that they don't have to run all
the righty's out there, they don't have to play Victor
Carrottini every day, just to have some balance. You know,
it's early, but I think if Jacob Melton, you know,
keeps producing, and if he keeps sacking more games like

(03:12):
he had last night, while jord On Alvarez is out,
he can carve himself a regular role on this team,
be it in left field, be it as the DH,
maybe right field on a day that Cam Smith needs off,
Jake Myers needs a rest, put him in center field.
They can play more matchup based stuff in the outfield.
So how much Jacob Melton plays is really dependent on

(03:36):
him in his production. If he produces, if he does
what he did last night, they'll find a way to
get his left handed bat and nu.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
Yeah, left hand er on the mountain tonight for the Guardians.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
So you got to get the big, bad right handed
bat of Brendan Rodgers in there, and Joe Spot of
course has done that.

Speaker 5 (03:48):
He'll bat ninth to night.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
Dubon will be in left and Altuve will remain as
the designated hitter. Diaz with the day off or not
in the starting lineup. Victor carrottin he'll do the catching
for Colton Gordon. I don't know if the words still early,
but you know, Colton Gordon appears to be pretty consistent,
and I'm curious if you think he's consistently good enough

(04:11):
to maintain this spot. When is he really any different
than any of three or four other high three four
A caliber pitches that are in their system.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, I'm really interested to see how these next couple
starts go for Colton Gordon because wex, why aren't we
having this same conversation about Ryan Gusto after his first
three or four starts of this season, No doubt they
looked they looked good, and you were like, hey, like
maybe they found something here. And then once the book's
out on you, and once you know teams have seen
enough and they're scouting reports, it can it can get hairy.

(04:43):
And you've seen that with Ryan Gusto. Colton Gordon's gonna
face a team to night and the Guardians that they're
not an offensive juggernaut, but they they don't swing at balls,
they put the ball in play. You know this is
this is a professional lineup piece facing tonight. So I'll
be interested to see how the next couple starts go
for him, because as we've seen it, and it's not

(05:05):
even just with Ryan gusso you've seen it with a
lot of other pitchers too, that they come up in
their first three or four starts are pretty impressive, and
then once the league gets a look at you, once
the book's out becomes a little more difficult. I think
the thing that Colton Gordon's gonna have to work on,
and I'd be surprised that this has not been said before.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
He throws too many strikes.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
And I know that sounds weird, but he gets in
so many one to two one two counts and just
throws too many hit able pitches in those counts, and
he's got to find all He does a great job
of getting ahead of guys, it's just got to be
the pitches have to be better in those leverage counts
to put guys away, to miss some bats and then
get deeper into a game. So I'll be interested to

(05:47):
see tonight how he can maybe be a little be
around the strike zone obviously one of the thirst don't
be so around the strike zone that you're getting hit
like he's been getting hit obviously.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
The latest installment of fromber Valdez last night, he looked
absolutely spectacular. You have to choose. You only get one
who's pitching better right now here Hunter Brown.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
The last two starts.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
It's been it's been Fromber and it's not close. I mean,
I'm I'm not one for hyperbole, but he came when
he came out in the first inning last night. I
was like, they may not touch him because the Pirates
are just like the Pirates are a joke.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
That lineup is just awful.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
And I mean when he had that, he had one
of the better curve balls I've ever seen him have
last night. Twenty swings, fourteen whiffs. I mean, he was
ninety eight with the sinker. And then I was like,
I I was, I started maybe writing a no hitter
kind of kind of thing after that first inning. And
then obviously, you know, it went a little awry, but

(06:50):
still they'll take eleven punch out some two runs over
seven innings any day of the week.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Go ahead.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
He's he knows, I have somebody to say here, Chandler,
and since you weren't on the program yesterday, unsure of
what it is, and it's gonna sound rather insulting to you,
but I don't mean it that way.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
Do you guys share the same brain?

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Is there all the things that ac was trying to
convince me of in advance of frombers start that he
was calling before first pitch, before the raindelay, A was
calling for I think he's gonna throw a no hitter tonight.

Speaker 5 (07:18):
That's how well he's been pitching.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Oh what, I slacked like a couple of people at
the Athletic and our work channel, And like I told
a couple of play as that raindelay was going and
as it became clear that we were probably gonna play
that game last night, I was just like, both of
these teams are gonna be swaying at everything. They're gonna
want to get out of here. We're gonna be playing
at midnight. And that feats perfectly into Fromber's style. And also,

(07:43):
as I just said, the Pirates, the Pirates should be
The Pirates are very lucky the Rockies exist because no
one is talking because no one is talking about how
just atrocious the Pirates, Like that is a that is
a terrible team. But because they were facing that team,
you did have the thought that, hey, like this could
this could be something historic. And then he went out

(08:04):
in that first inning and I was we all were
kind of looking around the press box like, oh man,
this could we could be up later than we thought tonight.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
In true WEX form, at nine thirty five pm in
the third inning, I get a one word text, hit
no hitter gone, just awful.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
You know what I'll give Jared Triolo an MVP vote.
Uh legend, Uh legend. I'll give Hi an MVP vote
for not making me work later last night than I
even ended up working.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
Definitely hooked you guys up. He had a couple of hits.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
There weren't very many, just the five off of Fromber
eleven strikeouts Brian Obray was nasty, and because they got
the ninth inning homer, Josh Hater ultimately did not have
to pitch in the game, though he did get loose,
and you'd like to avoid that if you can. I
can understand how Joe's been playing it, maybe why he
continues to go that route. Just continuing on the starting

(08:54):
pitching side of it, it feels like they have several options,
whether it's Gusto or Gordon or you Low or maybe
even Jason Alexander, who they're not tied to so much
that if you know, the roster manipulation would cost him. Obviously,
you have two other pitchers and Walter and blue Ball
who've ultimately made starts for you in May. Again, is
it almost obvious at this point that they're going to

(09:17):
go with what they have until Aarraghetti gets back and
then continue to go with what they have For the
other spot that's still open, so to speak, until the deadline, probably.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Wex here's Miguel or no, I did you did? Okay?

Speaker 2 (09:33):
I just making sure because I must I must have
not heard his name. But he's he don't count him
out either, He's he's been pitching really well.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Well.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Almost their entire rotation is capable of getting a call
up and having Mickey's story say you're gonna make your
You're gonna pitch for the Astros in two days.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, and I mean he'll probably have to do that
on Sunday. It probably won't be an actual call up.
It'll probably be Brandon Walter. But yeah, I think they're
gonna I think right now they're gonna kind of stick
with this and it may not be may not be pretty.
I mean, look, when you're doing this like, you can't expect,
you know, the consistency that they've gotten from Brown, Valdez, mccullors,

(10:10):
from the other two spots in the rotation. I think
it's going to be a series by series, you know,
team by team sort of matchup. I think Ryan Gusto
probably has to show them pretty remarkable strides in his
next starter or two to keep his permanent spot in
the rotation. Colton Gordon we just talked about, you know,

(10:31):
we'll see how the next couple of starts go.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
But yeah, I mean they've got options. Now.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
The options are probably not, you know, the greatest in
the world, but they're they could they could be in
far worse shape than they are right now given the
options that they have. But will they stay this way
until Righetti comes back. Yes, they have been kicking the
tires on some veterans that were like on minorly gopped
out deals or just like that kind of stuff, but

(10:58):
that nothing is materialized, so they're just gonna there. I
think right now they're gonna stick with what they have
and then you know, going to the deadline, Like yeah,
I think I still think a starting pitcher has to
be their their foremost priority at the deadline, because I
just I don't think you can count on the Luis
Garcia Christian Javier JP France cavalry to a comeback in

(11:21):
a timely manner and at full health. And b if
they do that throw effectively and throw meaningful innings like
that's a that's a lot. That's a lot to gamble
on and I'm not sure they want to do that.
So I still think, you know, I still think their
foremost priority at the deadline should be a starting pitcher
and again not an a snot that I don't have

(11:42):
to go out and get Grinky or Verlander again like
a mid level And I said this on Krush City
Territory the other day, like you are not making this
trade for the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
You're making this trade.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
To get to the playoffs, because once you get in
the playoffs, you know who's start in the first two
games of a playoff series for you, and then you
know after that who knows. But you're making this trade
to get through one sixty two and not and not
to get it not for October, if you see what
I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
