Just when I think wex the twenty twenty five can't
get more dramatic, the soap opera adds another chapter last
night at Dyke and Park.
Speaker 9 (03:08):
And for those of you, I know it's been talked
to death already.
Speaker 12 (03:11):
It's two o'clock, so everybody's had their say on this,
but it's our it's our turn now. There is no
way Frommer didn't do that on purpose last night. I've
analyzed it. I've gone into the film room, I've looked
at every angle, I've heard the sound bites. I don't
believe anything anybody's saying that would lead me to believe
(03:35):
that that wasn't on purpose last night. Welcome into the
Wednesday edition of The A Team. It's Sportstox seven ninety.
We'll be on Space City Home Network at the top
of the hour. You can leer at us, watch us
on the television. It's wex It's AC, it's cold Thompson
and yeah it is. There is a reason that several
(03:56):
good sources have said that the Astros haven't even approached
Fromber about an extension this offseason. Is it about this
kind of stuff or is it about you know, what
it's going to cost, or a mixture of both.
Speaker 9 (04:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 12 (04:08):
I'm not going to even speculate on that, but it
is with each passing start and stuff that has happened,
which really, I mean, last night's the first thing where
I was like, Okay, this is the first head case
moment he's had in quite some time, I think. But
it's just I'm not going to Fromber is not going
to be one of those pieces when he walks at
(04:30):
the end of this season where I'm gonna.
Speaker 9 (04:31):
Be like, ah, that that kills Yeah, he.
Speaker 12 (04:35):
Was, you know, because there's just too much of this stuff,
which any of this stuff is too much of this stuff.
Speaker 9 (04:41):
Let me guess you disagree.
Speaker 13 (04:42):
I don't have a comment on that yet because we
have the full show today. My other comment is, oh,
and he pitched like crap and the Astros lost.
Speaker 9 (04:53):
Everybody else lost. No, that's not the point.
Speaker 13 (04:55):
The point is he did something so absolutely intentional and
absolutely re us. We're fourteen hours into the day, nobody's
paying any attention to the fact they played like crap offensively, defensively, pitching,
I mean defensively, maybe a little much, but that's terrible,
terrible baseball, and too much of it under five hundred
(05:18):
for an exceptionally long period of time. I do also
recognize it is back burner material. This is an ACE
caliber pitcher. This is somebody who last time out helped
write the ship seven shutout innings when he was throwing two,
Saysar Salazar. Yeah, he has known for multiple seasons. Salazar
has been around the big league club for each of
the last three seasons at different times, both during spring
(05:39):
training and throughout the seasons. Obviously this year, I know
it doesn't seem like he's played much because he hasn't
played much. He's been with this team almost as much
as anybody else on the entire roster, because he's never
been hurt, and they kept him on the roster for
three months. They've played five months. He's been on the
roster for more than three months of it. So he's
been in the clubhouse, he's been in the catchers meetings,
(06:01):
he's been in the dugout. He and Fromber are familiar,
perfectly fine with one another. And I would add here
early on in the show, this is going to have
a lingering effect on fromber this is not going to
have any lingering effect on the twenty twenty five Astros
in season, gameplay, day to day stuff. Next time he
(06:22):
pitches zero, because he's already done stuff like this before,
it doesn't ever have an impact at least that I've
seen on their season. On the dais he pitches on
the rest of the clubhouse. I don't think they're going
full metal jacket on him. I don't think they did
the last time when he did this with the Iiner Diaz.
Now it's going to affect him and I think the
national media, in addition to being correct and that they
(06:44):
also hate the Astros. It's easy for them to pile
on here. He's going to hit free agency with more baggage. Ridiculous, awful,
I'm a bad teammate at times in games. And I
added ss to both fromber Valdez. The incident itself, obviously
will dive into a little bit lot to digest, a
lot to pick apart. What did we see when it happened,
(07:06):
What did we see in advance of it happening? The
explanation from Sesar and Fromer, both of whom spoke after
last night's game, after meeting with Joe Aspota, after meeting
with each other. And we'll see if Joe Spot or
anybody else has any comment about that today when they
have their same start time, their same availability in the clubhouse,
same availability for Joe Aspata, and hopefully an opportunity to
(07:28):
move on the positive side on this Homestand yet again
there are four and four on this eight game homestand
of ten so far with two more games remaining against
the hottest team in the American League. And it showed
spent a little time yesterday on the show talking about
where these two teams were as yesterday's series began. The
Astros were swimming in quicksand and luckily so is everybody
else immediately close to them. Seattle and the Yankees were
(07:51):
crushing baseballs left and right, hitting home runs at a
pace better than anybody else in baseball for the season,
at a pace better than anybody else in baseball in
the month they just completed and off of their off day,
and they came to town and did just that, hitting the
ball over the fence multiple times when player doing it
multiple times. One of those times four runs came home,
and the Astros ultimately did nothing to push back, losing
(08:13):
seven to one and again not taking advantage of what
else was happening around both the American League and clearly
inside their own division. But the incident itself obviously deserves
a ton of our attention. Was over at Texans today
for their practice, first media open practice during game week,
but coming out of a training camp, an opportunity to
(08:33):
get on the field earlier in the week, which presumably
they did, we just were not invited, and even though
our invitation was there today, it's in season now, so
we're not watching anything of any consequence. Installs and getting
ready for the game and running some kick return work,
but we're not really seeing anything before they say all right,
that's it for today. You guys can head on inside
(08:53):
or to your job, which takes you back here to
Sports Talk seven to ninety at two o'clock. But it
was noteworthy. As Demiko Ryan said on Monday, CJ. Gardner
Johnson now wearing number eight, he's gonna play based on
what we saw he practiced. Demiko said he expects him
to play in week one. Going out there for practice
the week of the game suggests he probably will and
(09:14):
hopefully that's the case. Blake Fisher was back on the
practice field. They have nine linemen. He might be the
odd man out from an active perspective, but returning from
his minor ankle injury from camp also good sign. Trent
Brown was on the practice field today for the very
first time ever as a Houston Texan signed in the
off season. Didn't practice during OTAs, was on the pup
(09:35):
list for all of camp, is currently on the practice squad,
but was out there on the field today for the
first time. And essentially everything else we'll find out more
Demko moments away from meeting with the media. Today's Wednesday
of game week. When they play on Sunday, Wednesday of
game week, we will hear from the quarterback of the
Houston Texan, CJ. Strouds. We'll sprinkle that into the show also.
(09:55):
And like I said, we view a very small portion
of practice. During that very small portion of practice, did
not see either Braxton Barrios or Christian Kirk working with
the team today. Doesn't mean they're hurt, doesn't mean they're
not available, just means we would have normally seen them
during this portion of practice. If everything was as you'd expect.
I'm sure Demiko will shed a ton of light on
(10:17):
that here in the next handful of minutes.
Speaker 9 (10:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (10:20):
Look, I'm going back to this fromber thing and you
nailed it with Salazar, like all the guy's done. Has
been a good soldier up to and including his last
start with fromber which was successful in large part because
of how he was calling the game, and I think
that's what led to what happened last night. What he
was trying to do was call the game a certain way.
Speaker 9 (10:43):
Look, is he is he?
Speaker 12 (10:45):
The reason is fromber waving him off for whatever or
not stepping off. Is that the reason that grand slam
pitch was made? Or was that the reason the grand
slam was hit?
Speaker 9 (10:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (10:54):
You know it's middle middle, that's pretty much.
Speaker 9 (10:56):
Yeah, it was a meatball.
Speaker 13 (10:58):
So normally what happened is and like I said, we
had a lot of time to get to this. We're
gonna hear from some of the people that are a
little closer to the situation, like Dana Brown. Brian Bogasvic
was on with US our station earlier Today makes his
weekly visit with the Matt Thomas Show. His perspectives former
astro former of a ballplayer and a former pitcher. Don't
forget in addition to being an outfielder.
Speaker 9 (11:20):
He'll weigh in.
Speaker 13 (11:21):
Some national voices have clearly weighed in, and it's essentially unanimous.
But one of the parts of a lot of their
explanations is, man, I've never seen that before. It's just
the simple part of it. Seysar Salazar punches in what
he wants, the pitch clock starts winding down. He doesn't
like what he believes is happening, so he's sitting in
his crouch waving Fromber to step back off the mount,
(11:43):
Get off the mount, do not go into your wind up,
don't throw this pitch. Fromber just ignores it and then
begins his wind up and then throws the pitch that
in and of itself, regardless of that result and regardless
of then what happened with the cross up intentional.
Speaker 9 (11:57):
That's pretty rare.
Speaker 13 (11:58):
It's pretty rare when the pitch looking at his catcher
telling him not to throw the pitch, do not go
into your wind up, just ignoring it completely. I mean,
you could call it being locked in. But it all
started with something that, as you'll hear from many of
these people. It's just those even those parts of it,
all of them considered, just don't happen very often, almost never.
Speaker 9 (12:20):
Yeah, it's it's just bizarre.
Speaker 12 (12:22):
That's the word that I keep coming back to when
I look at what happened last night. For the record,
I'm sure you went through every excruciating out in that game.
Speaker 9 (12:31):
Went through it. Yeah.
Speaker 14 (12:33):
Uh no.
Speaker 13 (12:35):
Actually I was doing an auction draft during the game
last night. I had the game going on my phone
and the theater room we were in it was nice place,
same place we draft every year. Gracious, hosts loved the guy.
But their TV was out, so there was their TV out.
I don't know, it's a theater room. You'd think the
theater room with a big, huge projection TV.
Speaker 9 (12:55):
Would work and draft on the schedule.
Speaker 13 (12:57):
Well, I mean, I don't think the condo is real
locked in on what do we have scheduled today?
Speaker 9 (13:02):
Okay? This random?
Speaker 12 (13:03):
Uh it is a public common room. Yes, I thought
it was someone's home.
Speaker 13 (13:07):
Ohkay No, no, no, theater room at a complex, gotcha.
Speaker 9 (13:10):
So it was out.
Speaker 13 (13:10):
But yes, I was watching the game as I was
feverishly bidding on Dak Prescott's number one target, Kyler Murray's
number one target. Let's see Trevor Lawrence's number one target.
A lot of whiteouts on the practice squad this year.
On the practice squad, that's our team name. Okay, I
catcha wait.
Speaker 9 (13:29):
Wait are you keeping your team name in our league?
Speaker 13 (13:31):
I have not made any changes in this league. What
are we the Mills High Club?
Speaker 15 (13:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (13:35):
He got an extension, so I figured, you know.
Speaker 13 (13:37):
I mean, when you can find a picture of Davis
Mills from when he was a high school quarterback prospect,
you can use that as your avatar for your station
league and you can call yourselves the Mills High Club.
You just keep running it out there. Same neck, I mean,
he's the same person. I would assume he carries the
same neck from high school to college to the pros.
Of course, married to being a father, all that stuff
(13:58):
all on the way here.
Speaker 12 (13:59):
No one else else could have matched that answer to
that question other than Adam Wexler.
Speaker 9 (14:03):
All right, so yeah, we have a lot to get into.
Speaker 12 (14:05):
We will begin doing just that when we return here
on a Wednesday edition of the program The eighteen on
Sports Talk seven ninety. Let's get into your plumbing situation.

lot of people don't until they need one, and then

No?
Speaker 13 (20:27):
Because then, hey man, can you remember I know Fromber's
pitching for the Blue Jays? Now, but remember Frombergate?
Speaker 26 (20:33):
No?
Speaker 13 (20:33):
Which one? It's not specific enough. Fromburgate's not specific enough.
Speaker 9 (20:40):
Yeah, Sala Fromberized last night? Is that what happened?
Speaker 13 (20:44):
I would definitely say you got Fromberized. Absolutely.
Speaker 9 (20:46):
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (20:47):
I'm pretty sure I've seen all of what saysar I
had to say after the game, and I believe nobody
asked him this. I think they asked him all the
right questions except for does your chest hurt?
Speaker 9 (20:58):
Oh, he's wearing padding? Oh okay, fine, do it. Let's go.
Speaker 13 (21:01):
Let's film a TikTok right now. I'm gonna put on
the catcher's gear, throw a ninety plus mile an hour
heater right at my ninety I said, I'm not throwing it.
I'm wearing the chess presenter. I'm taking it.
Speaker 9 (21:11):
How much money do I get to do this? I
would do.
Speaker 13 (21:13):
You can't throw it because you can't throw nine.
Speaker 9 (21:14):
Oh I want to take the ball. No, it doesn't.
Speaker 13 (21:17):
As many major leaguers that either are on podcasts were
asked to be on shows today and we're asked about it,
they noted what apparently isn't obvious to everybody. Yeah, you're
wearing padding, and yeah you take foul balls off of
it and everywhere else. It's not ideal, it's not desired.
I'm sure his chest is fine. He didn't really look
like he was hurt afterwards either. But it's not what
(21:39):
you want. And I think there are actually differing points
of view on what you'd like to hear from the
two people that were involved, and so obviously they're both
were going to talk, and they both did talk. I've
heard differing opinions. Some people say, what may be a
good life skill to follow, just own it and say
what happened, to tell the truth and which they might
(22:02):
have done, and if you want to believe what they said,
I can't tell you not to but tell the truth. Yeah,
I lost my cool. I was mad at myself, or
I was mad at Saysar. I was mad at the pitch,
I was mad at the result. I was mad at
my last month and change, and I took it out
on Caesar Saysary. It was intentional, and I apologize to
him and the team and we're moving on. If that's
what was truthful. And same thing with Saysar, whether his
(22:24):
story about I punched the wrong numbers on PitchCom or whatever,
or this is really all. You can't expect a major
leaguer or a teammate to say if it was intentional,
then obviously Frommer said it wasn't, and his teammate backed
him up on that. When he spoke with the media,
I don't know if they they're meeting with Joe or
with each other, was a all right, I'm sorry, let's
(22:47):
get our stories straight now.
Speaker 9 (22:48):
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (22:49):
Like I said, I'm more than open to hearing everybody's
opinion on it. Dana Brown was on with the Sean
Salisbury Show this morning his weekly visit. At nine point thirty,
he offered his opinion specifically on who Fromber is and
why some of the things happen with Fromber that we've
seen over his ears here.
Speaker 11 (23:06):
I do not. I do not, and I want to
repeat this over and over again. I do not want
to pull out the competitive.
Speaker 15 (23:13):
Nature of Fromber.
Speaker 11 (23:14):
It is the one thing that makes them really good
and competitive.
Speaker 9 (23:20):
Right.
Speaker 11 (23:21):
You don't want to take that away from a player.
Speaker 22 (23:23):
You don't want to coach it out of him, right,
I get that out of him.
Speaker 11 (23:26):
However, you do have to stay under control. So it's
gonna take a mound, does it. It's gonna take Hey, hey, anybody, look,
you just made a hell of a pitch. The guy
flipped the base hit to right, the run scored.
Speaker 15 (23:39):
It's over, blush it.
Speaker 9 (23:41):
Let's go.
Speaker 11 (23:41):
We gotta get we got two outs, we gotta get
the next hitter.
Speaker 8 (23:44):
That's what it's called.
Speaker 11 (23:44):
That's what that's what it takes to be a champion.
And sometimes we have to read it. And it's exactly
why coaches are on top of it and they call
a time out. You know, you have you have a
twelve pitch at bat. When guy files the ball off
with the base to go to continue to file the
ball off hit, the base hit ties the game noun,
visit the win, settle them down.
Speaker 9 (24:08):
That's what it's all about.
Speaker 11 (24:09):
And you have to lead the teenagers of these competitors,
and sometimes it takes just amount visit and so let's
let's not let's not uh, you know, fall from her
for being a competitive, mean guy that will you know,
do whatever you have to do to win. But let's
(24:31):
keep them under control. And that's the way I see it.
And I don't want to pull that competitive nature from them,
you know, I want them to continue to compete, and
we'll work with them and try to get them settled
down when it when it gets a little frustrated. It's
all a part of the game.
Speaker 15 (24:46):
It's all a part of sports.
Speaker 11 (24:48):
And you know, you know from looking at championships all
across every sport, there's always this competitor that you have
to calm down.
Speaker 12 (24:58):
Okay, that last part is all he could have played
and it would have been just as fine.
Speaker 9 (25:02):
And I will translate for you. This is who he is.
Speaker 12 (25:05):
This is who we're going to deal with however long
the rest of the season goes, and then it won't
be a problem next year. That's what's not being said,
but that's what's being said behind closed doors.
Speaker 13 (25:15):
I think, well, I don't think they're moving on like
that in this regard, because you're right, he's not going
to be here next year, and yesterday had nothing to
do with that. No, but they need him to be
here this year. Yeah, they need him for the final
twenty three games of the season, or twenty two games
of the season, twenty three games of the season, and
they need him to pitch a lot better than he
did yesterday, not to get in so many seas. He
(25:35):
wasn't even pitching poorly. Quite honestly, you know, you have
a Crawford box homer. You have two singles where he
probably liked the pitch, would have liked to not walk
one of those three batters that was on the bases,
and then.
Speaker 12 (25:46):
His zone sucked on both sides too. It did, but
it's not the reason they lost.
Speaker 13 (25:50):
No, it's not because it sucked for both sides. Their
left handed pitcher, who had almost identical numbers to Fromber
going into the last night's game, no hit the Astros
for multiple innings before they finally got one of their
thousand singles in last night's game with no extra base hits,
which never happens.
Speaker 9 (26:03):
Sarcasm.
Speaker 13 (26:06):
You can't make the type of over the plate mistakes
because it wasn't an issue of control. It wasn't an
issue that his stuff wasn't biting, it wasn't sharp. He
seemed sharp enough to have made his way through their
lineup a little bit more easily than he did.
Speaker 9 (26:18):
And it does.
Speaker 13 (26:19):
As much as we think the Yankees stink, and we
know they're gonna fail in the playoffs, and they probably will,
it's difficult to go through their lineup on a regular
basis and not have the ball go over the fence.
There's a reason why they lead the league. That's all
they put in their lineup. They don't care about defense,
they don't care about batting average, they don't care about singles.
They literally do not care. And of guys on their
lines full home run hitters, and that's that. And this
(26:41):
is what you got yesterday, and so you've.
Speaker 12 (26:43):
Got if you got guys on base, that's gonna be
even worse, and it was last night multiple times. But
also if you're not scoring, which the Astros don't anymore.
I didn't even realize that the Guardians were the only
team that scored fewer runs in the entire month of
August looking at some of the numbers, which I'm sure
you probably already said that.
Speaker 13 (27:02):
But yesterday I just mentioned they were one of two
teams that didn't score one hundred runs last month.
Speaker 9 (27:06):
The Guardians were the other.
Speaker 12 (27:08):
I just I mean, it's it's I guess maybe it's
more under a microscope when you play a team like
this that can potentially score in bunches because there are
guys on base, but when the ball goes over the fence.
Speaker 9 (27:22):
All well and good.
Speaker 13 (27:23):
This game, the four games before it, and the three
games before that identical. You say, Kakuchi is the only
pitcher that started a game against the Astros on this
eight game home stand, thus far out of ten that
they've gotten to at all. In any way, the only
one that you've faced guys that are awful. You faced
Rockies pitchers that are awfuls You faced Angels, pitchers that
you've seen a billion times.
Speaker 9 (27:42):
It's a you problem.
Speaker 13 (27:42):
It's absolutely it's one hundred percent them, and they just
happen to be going through an extended period of time.
But one last thing to address, if you would, Dana's
comments and you kind of did you know he's a
competitor every team has a guy that you got to
kind of rein in, and I think that's true in
a lot of pro sports team there's guys that are
sometimes too wamped up, but you want all the things
(28:04):
that come with it as long as it doesn't end
up hurting the team. And I mean, I don't know
if it even hurt the team yesterday. It's the way
he pitched that hurt the team. The incident we're talking
about was after six runs were already on the board,
but managing his frustrations have led to a lot of
these runs being scored. He's worked with sports psychologists, He
obviously has different teammates that he's worked with, Korea, then
(28:26):
Korea now, everything that goes into it, and he still
appears to be someone that usually it doesn't match up
like this. When you have really, really really good stuff
and you're an elite level pitcher, usually you don't let
your frustrations get to you like that, or else you
wouldn't be the first thing I said, there's very few
pitchers with his talent and record and resume that just
(28:48):
can't seem to hold it together mentally, mentally, because when
you say think.
Speaker 9 (28:52):
You know, guys are we got to rein them in.
Speaker 12 (28:54):
But what they bring to the team I think of
like this is not a modern reference at all. It's
just the first name that popped into my head. Baseball wise,
I think of like John Rocker, like what did he
say off the field?
Speaker 9 (29:07):
What did he do? What is he doing out there?
Speaker 12 (29:10):
Like all this other stuff that had nothing to do
with baseball. With Fromber, it's it's in a way it's
baseball related because the.
Speaker 13 (29:19):
It's totally like to me, it's more like Rodman.
Speaker 9 (29:22):
Yeah, yeah, like I saw Man relate this. We need this.
Speaker 13 (29:26):
We got to do our best to let him be
him on the court. Yeah, and do some of those
things and antagonize Carl him alone, but not get kicked
out of the game and not have to sit on
the bench because you have nine fouls already.
Speaker 12 (29:39):
Well maybe maybe uh, Fromber needs to go to Vegas
with Carmen Electra for a month.
Speaker 13 (29:44):
Just get Fromber's peanuts on his off day. Maybe hope
someone was in the bag last night.
Speaker 9 (29:50):
All Right, we will continue to talk about this.
Speaker 12 (29:52):
It is a hot topic, but there is other things
to get to and as per usual at this time
of day, unless of course, we're talking to Spencer Araghetty
or somebody else.

So they said on social media.

Speaker 39 (35:23):
Know, you're the best of X posting ever seen days,
you're the best of X breaking the entire Internet.
Speaker 9 (35:40):
Well, I guess something.
Speaker 12 (35:42):
I don't know if X has something different, but this
is something that kind of is gonna take me down
a couple of paths. And I saw it, of course
on the mean streets of X. That's the first time
I saw this. But it kind of goes into the
whole thing that we talk about with streaming platforms and
how it's getting convoluted. Like a little bit later in
(36:04):
the show, I'm gonna rant about something I can't change,
and WEX is gonna tell me to just ignore, and
you know it's gonna be a Wednesday.
Speaker 9 (36:10):
But this is.
Speaker 12 (36:11):
Something that I first saw Stephanie McMahon talk about, and
now Charles Barkley is talking about. And I think that
the NBA and WWE are getting in the same boat.
Speaker 9 (36:24):
There's too many different.
Speaker 12 (36:25):
Platforms that they're trying to put their products on, and
their fans are sick of it, and it's it's affecting
the general overall desire to seek out that product, whether
it be pro wrestling on the WWE side, whether it
be the NBA. Like we were all excited. I think
we me and you, especially because of the age we are.
(36:47):
Oh sweet, the NBA on NBC is back. I can't wait.
What that really means is some mixture of the actual
channel NBC peacock and then you're sharing that with Amazon,
You're sharing that with ESPN, you're sharing that with the
TNT show that's now on ESPN. And I'm sure I'm
missing five other different platforms that you have to pay
(37:09):
for individually every single month. Charles Barkley went off on this,
trashing the NBA for quote getting greedy and taking money
from multiple streaming platforms. I'll pause in order for you
to jump in and say, what is he mad at
them wanting to make money? Go ahead, say your line?
Speaker 13 (37:28):
What's he so mad at them wanting to make money?
Speaker 9 (37:30):
Thank you?
Speaker 12 (37:31):
So, the NBA signed that eleven year, seventy six billion
with a b dollar deal with ESPN, NBC, and Amazon
to stream their games on those platforms. And then, and
you know about this because we both follow this account.
Speaker 9 (37:50):
And it's where.
Speaker 12 (37:52):
This kind of stuff comes from, the NBA Communications X
account where to watch NBA Action this season.
Speaker 9 (37:59):
I'm not gonna read it. It's so convoluted.
Speaker 12 (38:02):
That it's just like, I get it, I get why
fans are upset, and Charles basically just bottom lined it
like he always does. Quote they don't give a bleep
about the fans, and I'm not, like, I can't really
argue with what he's saying, and no one else is
really either because they all agree with him. It's it's
(38:25):
basically gonna be a bunch of not parroting, but there's
not gonna be a lot of dissenting views when you
look at that, Like for example, it's on the dunk
Central at NBA Central, the Dunk Central account. I mean,
the only thing people are actually pointing out is that
he needs to chill with the ozembic shots.
Speaker 9 (38:42):
That was the kind of funny part of this.
Speaker 12 (38:44):
But like, this is gonna get worse, not better, I
think with all the sports.
Speaker 13 (38:49):
I mean, isn't the gist of what we're talking about
or they're talking about There are more availability for more
games outside their local market this year than ever before.
But saying it's bad is that right?
Speaker 9 (39:02):
What they're saying is bad. I'm not saying it's free trying.
Speaker 13 (39:06):
I'm just saying it's it's available to you if you
want the product.
Speaker 12 (39:09):
But not only is it not free, but you've got
to figure out, like this is going to be something
that Rockets fans are going to really truly experience for
the first time in several seasons.
Speaker 9 (39:17):
Where are we playing tonight? What channel is it on?
Speaker 12 (39:19):
Because they have a lot more exposure this year with
Kevin Durant here.
Speaker 13 (39:23):
Yeah, I mean we'll hear from people here. We know
you can find it right here on Sports Talk seven
to ninety or News Radio seven forty k r H
all season long, including playoffs. We don't get kicked out
during the playoffs. Unfortunately, the local rsns do in the
postseason early. But you're right, and I still can't believe
we ever get calls to this day in twenty twenty five,
(39:45):
where's the game tonight? But we do on occasion. Isn't
that a problem worth tackling if you're the NBA, there's
a little confusion.
Speaker 9 (39:54):
There's a lot of confusion.
Speaker 13 (39:56):
I know they're playing, I know it's available somewhere now
in advance the season is the confusing part is the
annoying part, and the costly part.
Speaker 9 (40:04):
I'd like to watch all eighty two games.
Speaker 13 (40:06):
So now you're telling me I've got to subscribe to this,
and subscribe to that, and subscribe to this.
Speaker 9 (40:09):
Yeah, probably you are.
Speaker 13 (40:11):
I think at some point in time, the assumption from
all these companies is it is gonna cost you just
what it used to, but you're gonna be subscriber to
all these outlets. That's that's kind of what they're trying
to do. They offer more than just this in addition,
like the NBA on NBC, Well, you're gonna need it
for Peacock games. Well, if you're already as a Peacock subscriber,
you get all that product anyway. Now you get this
or vice versa. You become an NBA subscriber or a
(40:33):
subscriber because of the NBA, Well, now you get everything
else too again not free, not over the air, but
access to so much more. And I mean, he's not
a player anymore, even though he is benefiting tremendously financially
through a lot of his own hard work, just like
the players through their own hard work. I mean, Chase
signing for seventy million dollars a year, Damian Lillard can't
(40:56):
even play anymore, and he's making sixty million dollars a year.
And then there's players they're going to get these contracts
and that percentage of the BRI if you're not pushing
your product out there to more outlets who are dying.
I couldn't stop there because some people think these purchases
they're making will make them die. Well, but the statement reads,
(41:18):
they're dying to get into your business. They are dying
for you to take their billions of dollars, and so
Adam Silver and the owner said yes.
Speaker 12 (41:26):
And this is where it ties into the whole WWE
thing because Stephanie McMahon, who's obviously vinced his daughter if
you don't know, and he sold it for eleventy billion
jillion dollars and TKO has taken over and they just
recently said, all right, well your pay per views starting
next year, they're gonna be on ESPN. Plus you're gonna
have to get this thirty dollars service over here just
to watch our pay per views.
Speaker 9 (41:47):
Oh but don't worry, our regular program will.
Speaker 12 (41:49):
That'll be over on Netflix, which you also have to
have to see that, and then on SmackDown.
Speaker 9 (41:53):
That's going to be a difference. And you get where
it's going.
Speaker 12 (41:56):
So Stephanie started doing her podcast What's Your Story with
Steph McMahon, and she interviews a lot of people in
sports and entertainment, business and of course WWE to find
out their personal stories. With the last episode of this
she had Roman Reigns on and one of the sponsors
of the episode was a VPN company. Oh did I
mention that this podcast is on ESPN Plus, I probably
(42:17):
should have mentioned that little tidbit. This VPN company that
sponsored it was called surf Shark, which gives people access
to the Internet through different locations, allowing them to unlock
content that's not available for their own country. In other words,
a legal, you know, loophole. A lot of you, this
is a quote on this podcast from Stephanie. A lot
(42:39):
of you are still watching WWE the old school way
on cable, dealing with boring commercials while I'm enjoying her
uninterrupted action. Let's fix that with today's sponsor, surf Shark VPN.
And she's basically telling people how to circumvent the situation
that they're finding themselves.
Speaker 9 (42:57):
In right now.
Speaker 12 (42:58):
And apparently ESPN's not very happy about that. Like, I'm
sure they're probably not. The NBA's probably not happy with
Charles Barkley's comments saying that they don't care about the fans,
because ultimately, that's what everybody is saying. Both of these
people are saying, Yeah, these people don't care about the fans.
Speaker 13 (43:12):
It's your customer. It's weird to me, it really is.
And maybe it sounds like I'm dude enough with your
contrarian attitude. I mean, I'm not one who goes after
the games like this. I'll watch the games I can get,
and I'll subscribe when necessary, but it doesn't it doesn't
really give me much thought. Obviously, I'm at half the
games or more so it's a little different. I totally
recognize that same thing with Red Zone. I don't watch
(43:34):
red Zone. I'm usually at the game, and I am
usually watching one particular game. So I'm maybe not speaking
from a very positive outlook point of view. But they've
signed all these TV deals and now even more games
are available to the fans, including the same number of
games roughly to the fans locally the same way you
could get them before, you can get them now. The
better your team is, the fewer of the games will
(43:55):
be there. I believe it's sixty seven games that Space
City Home Network has all by themselves, and there's a
couple others that are on both, and then a handful
of others that are only on national services. So a
handful of games you're gonna have to look and search for. Heck,
if you're in Wizard's Land, you're probably getting all eighty
(44:16):
two games without any worry. Yeah, And so I don't
know that it's they hate their fans. They don't care
about their fans. They're trying to get money from the fans,
the same fans that are paying an arm and a
leg to go to games, where they're trying to take
money from them, they're just giving more they're putting. I
guess you can look at it this way, and I'll
leave it at this. Yeah, the owners are making more
money and the players are making more money. And who's
(44:36):
it costing us?
Speaker 9 (44:38):
I guess.
Speaker 13 (44:39):
But they're they're not making money from Joe Fan. They're
making money from Lawrence Prime and mister NBC.
Speaker 9 (44:48):
That's where the money's coming. They're giving them billions.
Speaker 13 (44:50):
You out on the street that bought a family of
four pack and subscribe to Prime for the year, where
means you also get other things. That's not where the
money's coming from. The money's coming from the TV deals,
not from the individual fans, not from thousands of individual
fans either.
Speaker 9 (45:06):
Well, they had that money to give in those TV deals,
they don't.
Speaker 13 (45:09):
That's why TV deals from the TV side are terrible.
That's why ESPN is in this massive hole for the
last twenty years.
Speaker 9 (45:15):
And yet they keep ruining things.
Speaker 13 (45:16):
They just keep spending more and more money on these
broadcast rights that are putting their country, their company in
terrible financial position. So we'll see that if it happens
so they can go out of business, there'll be ten
other networks just like it. We'll see if it happens
in Prime situation, in Netflix situation, and if Peacock and NBC.
It's a little different because they have their own network

Winding down the two o'clock hour, We will begin our
simulcast over on Space City Home Network when we return
for the next segment, and still have a lot of
things to get to. On a Wednesday edition of the program,
we'll have a little a segment of Dana Brown's visit
earlier this morning, which you already heard a little bit
of on the whole dust up fromber Saysar Sala Salazar
(52:14):
all of the people who have weighed in on that,
and he'll have more on that. But also why Jordan
isn't in the lineup every single day like he wasn't
last night. Let me just ask you, WEX if Ordon
had been in the lineup last night, would it have
changed the final score?
Speaker 13 (52:29):
That's too hard to answer, well, can you try?
Speaker 9 (52:32):
Yes? I mean no, I don't know. I mean you
never know.
Speaker 13 (52:36):
He's their best hitter. In my opinion, having him not
in the lineup makes you worse. I think we all
know that. So I he explained why they did it,
and we talked about it yesterday and we knew why.
And instead of telling you what he said, we'll let
you hear what he said when we do that a
little bit later here in the three o'clock hour. They
have their plan. It's basically the gist of it. I
wouldn't have that plan, but I don't have the medical
(52:57):
information they do. Doesn't mean that it's the right plan.
Just like load management, just like minutes restrictions, they go
with the best guests that they have from what the
doctors tell them they think will be best for the
respective player. You know, five six, seven days in a
row of ten to twelve swings a day, Does that
mean he is going to aggravate it again? Is the
(53:19):
likelihood going up?
Speaker 9 (53:21):
Oh? What's de Miko's plan for this Sunday?
Speaker 13 (53:24):
Probably outplay the other team, let the guys fly around,
don't make them think too much.
Speaker 9 (53:29):
Forming play fast swarm.
Speaker 13 (53:32):
He did obviously acknowledge something that I mentioned earlier in
the show, and that we were able to see CJ.
Gardner Johnson wearing his new number eight and on the
practice field for the Texans today as they go through
their normal work week starting today. They had a little
bit different work week prior to that, and I mentioned
they were already on the field.
Speaker 9 (53:48):
We media weren't there.
Speaker 13 (53:50):
His early thoughts in today's press conference about CJ. Gardner
Johnson's progress.
Speaker 42 (53:55):
Yeah, the energy has been good. CJ's been back for
a few days now, so the energy has been good
as matters getting him back into you know, football, just
doing the communication, being where we're supposed to be, just
make sure everybody's on the same page. Just takes takes
time getting back to that, and he's done a really
good job of just fitting right back in and rolling
with the communications. So we're excited to have him back.
Speaker 13 (54:17):
And what he said there, it's worth pointing out they
sign him in the off season or traded for him
in the off season. Quite obviously, he was not a
participant in their off season workouts on the field, so
from a communication standpoint, that still has to get done.
He missed we didn't play in any of the preseason
games and obviously some time was missed away from the
team at totally on the practice field with the knee injury.
(54:38):
So those things are the things that over the very
short time they have now of health earlier in the
week and now today, tomorrow and Friday. That's what they'll
be working on with someone who is, you know, one
of the back end players that's gonna save their bacon
a time or two I'm sure this year, and probably
lay the wood to a few people a time or two,
including on Sunday. I believe against the Rams.
Speaker 12 (54:58):
Who gets to Matthew Stafford first on Sunday? Since you
brought that up, I.
Speaker 13 (55:02):
Don't think it's out of the question that because the
edges will do such a great job, that Tim Settle
gets the team's first sack of the season or Sheldon Rankins.
And even though I don't think the interior group, they
might not as a group have more than fourteen fifteen
sacks total, you know, another twenty ish twenty five thirty
ish from your edge rushers as a group. If you
(55:24):
get thirty, that's forty five sacks. That's about where they
were last year at forty seven. But on any given something,
Settle had five sacks last year, he does get into
the backfield, and with so much focus on well, we
got to chip over here, we can't commit two guys
to the interior. We got to commit two guys to
the exterior. I think there's a reasonable chance of that.
You could also see Hunter push the pocket and because
(55:44):
the I don't want to get hit by him. Oh,
there's will Anderson sac number one.
Speaker 9 (55:48):
What about a safety blitz.
Speaker 13 (55:50):
I don't think they're gonna have a safety blitz for
a say, sack in game one. I would be surprised
if he Yeah, but I don't want to open up
things for Stafford unnecessary I think they can do in
this particular game. I don't know that that wrinkles thrown
at him. And if it's his safety blitz, it's it's Petrie.
It's not gonna be like the other safety.
Speaker 12 (56:08):
That's why I brought that up, because this will be
his first action since when was he hurt last year
the Kansas City game before that, but he was he
was done for the rest of the year, was he not?
Speaker 9 (56:18):
He did not return.
Speaker 12 (56:19):
Yeah, I'm excited to see him back out there for
this defense. I keep forgetting about him, basically because of
all of the names that are involved in that what
we hope is going to be a top five defense.
Speaker 9 (56:31):
All right, we mentioned it.
Speaker 12 (56:32):
We will get to more of what Dana Brown had
to say about last night's situation and other things like
Jordan not being in the lineup on a daily basis.
That will be when we return. We also have Chris
Gordy coming in for his weekly visit. A lot to
get to as the three o'clock hour gets under way,
and the simulcast on Space City Home Network when we.

I may see. Cole Thompson is our producer. As we
take you up until six o'clock tonight, Game two of
this three game set with the New York Yankees will
(01:01:19):
take place between your astros and the Yankees that had
their way last night. Seven to one was the final,
and as wex mentioned in the first hour, nobody's really
talking about that because of what happened between or what
didn't happen between Fromber Valdez and Sezar Salazar the kit
catcher last night that I think everybody's convinced Fromber ignored
(01:01:43):
did not step off the mound, threw a pitch for
a grand slam and then through his chest. There's basically
no other way to put it. It looked intentional, especially
because of the way Fromber turned around and you know,
didn't didn't particularly like knowledge of the fact that he
had thrown that baseball.
Speaker 9 (01:02:02):
By the way, In case you're wondering.
Speaker 12 (01:02:05):
What Fromber's agent had to say about this, Ulysses Cabrera
on last night's cross up as it were, between Fromber
and Ceesar Salazar.
Speaker 13 (01:02:16):
The agent for the soon to be free agent, What
did he have to say?
Speaker 15 (01:02:18):
There you go.
Speaker 12 (01:02:19):
The idea that he's intentionally trying to injure one of
his teammates is preposterous. It's a complete lack of respect
for who he is as a person and who he
is as a player. Nobody's saying he was trying to
injure him. They were just saying he threw at him.
Speaker 13 (01:02:34):
Well, again, he throws the ball at him every time.
Here's the catcher, you're supposed to do that, and saying
it that way, and I think everybody gets it. He
intentionally threw a pitch he believes his catcher was not
ready for. And we've seen lots of catchers get crossed
up before. Oftentimes it doesn't result in what we saw
last night. Both from the literal it hit him right
in the chest. It was a called strike. Not often,
(01:02:55):
but occasionally pitchers that cross up their catchers or vice versa.
The pitches aren't strikes, and you weren't ready for it,
and you don't have to kind of move quickly to
at least attempt to put a glove on a basis
were all so empty, so it really didn't matter where
the ball went. Ball landed right in front of him.
But then there are the reactions immediately afterwards. You mentioned
Fromber's reaction he looked very ticked off, not oh, no,
(01:03:17):
I hit my catcher because we're crossed up. I don't
think he would be so upset that he hit him.
He'd be so upset that, well, we're not on the
same page. Something happened here. We got to get this right.
And as you'll hear from Dana a little bit, how
about a mounda visit at some point during this entire episode.
But that's Fromber's reaction. The reaction from the catcher was
what I think was more telling than anything else to me,
(01:03:38):
at least, And it's not not that Fromber's reaction wasn't
also rather telling because he turned around and walked off
the mound. He was angry and didn't appear angry that
he had crossed up his catcher, but more angry that
he was down six nothing that goes to the competitive
nature that Dana Brown will mention more of. But Salizar
got up and pulled his mask up over the top
(01:03:58):
of his head and had a look of bewilderment on
his face. Not a chest tap like that's on me,
or he didn't run out to the mound or drag
out to the mound or walk out to the mound.
The look on his face was like, did you really
just do that?
Speaker 9 (01:04:13):
Come on, man.
Speaker 13 (01:04:14):
It was very much a come on man.
Speaker 15 (01:04:16):
Look.
Speaker 13 (01:04:16):
Now they both talked after the game, and now their agent,
the agent for fromber Valdez is they've all said the
same thing in different ways and addressing it in a
similar fashion to say, come on, And he's just not
throwing at his teammate, he's not intentionally crossing him up
so he will hit him with the pitch. I'm sure
you guys are familiar with a handful of times that's
happened at the lower lower levels of baseball. I mean,
(01:04:39):
you've probably seen the video of the softball game. They
were very, very very mad at how the umpire had
called the game and the pitch comes in and the
catcher runs away from home plate like it's going to
be a wild pitch. It's absolute heater, right over the
heart of the plate and just belts the umpire. He
immediately calls the game and walks off the field, and
(01:05:01):
they lose via forfeit. I've seen it a couple times
in some other situations I.
Speaker 9 (01:05:06):
Could think of that.
Speaker 13 (01:05:07):
I would be fine with that happening at the major
league level. But the umpires not on your team. He's
not on either team. Sometimes you think he's against you
your team, but Saysar's on Fromber's team. Saysar helped guide
him to seven innings of shutout baseball less than a
week ago. He's on his team, and it just did
not look like it in that moment.
Speaker 12 (01:05:27):
When the dugouts clear, or when the dugout clears because
he hit his teammate. If that's what really happened, who
takes what side?
Speaker 13 (01:05:36):
There was a bench clearing incident, which is also ridiculous
last night, and I'm sure mister Freeland there in Colorado
is happy that this incident is much bigger. He got
kicked out of a game without recording it out because
he thought somebody pimped a homer in the first inning
of a game against you the Rockies, it was Devers.
Speaker 9 (01:05:52):
Yeah, did pimp the homer.
Speaker 13 (01:05:53):
Okay, he thinks he was disrespected by him pimping the homer.
Good correction, guys, pimp homers all the time. Okay, we'll
just leave it all the time.
Speaker 9 (01:06:03):
We'll keep it simple.
Speaker 13 (01:06:04):
We won't curse, we won't go over the top, we
won't fall out of our chairs all the time. Is
a very good way to say it all the time.
Keep in mind also means during Dev's six hundred and
seventy five played appearances this year, he will do that
all the time, thirty one times, thirty two times, maybe
something like that. It's it's to me, it is a
(01:06:27):
total joke on the pitcher completely, and his own manager
basically said it after the game, and that's created a
different fire Stormlale, How did he not have his pitchers
back because his pitcher left his team needing twenty seven
outs because he couldn't handle giving up his Billions home
run of the year. But that's we don't have any
(01:06:48):
liners that say your deep Southwest home for Colorado sports.
So we'll leave the Colorado situation. It will for another day.
The situation in Houston. I'm glad for one thing, because
I think I know management. I think I know the manager,
I think I know the coaching staff, and I think
then I know the clubhouse. Over and done, with not
(01:07:09):
a lingering impact to the rest of the season. Watch
all the talking head shows you want, whether it's TV
or elsewhere on satellite or whatever YouTube channel, they will
all be asking that question, how will this impact the
Astros or the rest of the way. Will Fromber be
in their rotation moving forward? That's next. We will never
say that, or I won't because it's totally utterly ridiculous
and it's a zero impact on the twenty twenty five Astros.
(01:07:31):
I don't think it has an impact on the twenty
six Astros either, because neither will he. I don't think
fromber Valdez is throwing any pitches for the twenty twenty
six Astros. The incident isn't the reason why, but part
of who he is, which is why there was an incident,
is some of the reason why I don't think he'll
be here.
Speaker 12 (01:07:48):
By the way, speaking of pimping home runs, didn't think
that Jazz Chisholm was gonna be in the is he
typically a thirty home run guy.
Speaker 13 (01:07:57):
This will be the first to go round for that

I may see Cole Thompson is our producer as we
take you up until six o'clock tonight. Game two of
this three game set with the New York Yankees will
(01:09:19):
take place between your astros and the Yankees that had
their way last night, seven to one was the final,
and as Wex mentioned in the first hour, nobody's really
talking about that because of what happened between or what
didn't happen between Fromber Valdez and Sezar Salazar the kit
catcher last night that I think everybody's convinced Fromber ignored
(01:09:43):
did not step off the mound, threw a pitch for
a grand slam and then through his chest.
Speaker 9 (01:09:49):
There's basically no other way to put it.
Speaker 12 (01:09:52):
It looked intentional, especially because of the way Fromber turned
around and you know, didn't didn't particularly like ignit knowledge
of the fact that he had thrown that baseball.
Speaker 9 (01:10:02):
By the way, in case you're wondering.
Speaker 12 (01:10:05):
What Fromber's agent had to say about this, Ulysses Cabrera
on last night's cross up as it were, between Fromber
and Ceesar Salazar.
Speaker 13 (01:10:16):
The agent for the soon to be free agent, what
did he have to say?
Speaker 1 (01:10:18):
There you go.
Speaker 12 (01:10:19):
The idea that he's intentionally trying to injure one of
his teammates is preposterous. It's a complete lack of respect
for who he is as a person and who he
is as a player. Nobody's saying he was trying to
injure him. They were just saying he threw at him.
Speaker 13 (01:10:34):
Well, again, he throws the ball at him every time.
Here's the catcher, you're supposed to do that, and saying
it that way, and I think everybody gets it. He
intentionally threw a pitch he believes his catcher was not
ready for. And we've seen lots of catchers get crossed
up before. Oftentimes it doesn't result in what we saw
last night, both from the literal it hit him right
in the chest. It was a called strike. Not often,
(01:10:55):
but occasionally pitchers that cross up their catchers or vice versa.
The aren't strikes, and you weren't ready for it, and
you've don't you have to kind of move quickly to
at least attempt to put a glove on a basis
were all so empty, so it really didn't matter where
the ball went. Ball landed right in front of him.
But then there are the reactions immediately afterwards. You mentioned
Fromber's reaction, he looked very ticked off. Not oh no,
(01:11:17):
I hit my catcher because we're crossed up. I don't
think he would be so upset that he hit him,
he'd be so upset that, well, we're not on the
same page. Something happened here. We got to get this right.
And as you'll hear from Dana a little bit, how
about a mountain visit at some point during this entire episode.
But that's Fromber's reaction. The reaction from the catcher was
what I think is was more telling than anything else
(01:11:38):
to me at least, and it's not to me not
that Fromber's reaction wasn't also rather telling because he turned
around and walked off the mound. He was angry and
didn't appear angry that he had crossed up his catcher,
but more angry that he was down six nothing that
goes to the competitive nature that Dana Brown will mention
more of. But Salizar got up and pulled his mask
up over the top of his head, and how to
(01:12:00):
look of bewilderment on his face not a chest tap
like that's on me, or he didn't run out to
the mound or drag out to the mound or walk
out to the mound.
Speaker 9 (01:12:09):
The look on his face was like, did you really
just do that? Come on, man?
Speaker 13 (01:12:13):
It was very much a come on, man. Look now
they both talked after the game, and now their agent,
the agent for fromber Valdez is they've all said the
same thing in different ways and addressing it in a
similar fashion to say, come on, and he's just not
throwing at his teammate, he's not intentionally crossing him up
so he will hit him with the pitch. I'm sure
you guys are familiar with a handful of times that's
(01:12:35):
happened at the lower, lower, lower levels of baseball. I mean,
you've probably seen the video of the softball game. They
were very, very very mad at how the umpire had
called the game. And the pitch comes in and the
catcher runs away from home plate like it's going to
be a wild pitch. It's absolute heater, right over the
(01:12:55):
heart of the plate and just belts the umpire. He
immediately calls the game and walks off the field and
they lose via forfeit. I've seen it a couple times
in some other situations I.
Speaker 9 (01:13:06):
Could think of that.
Speaker 13 (01:13:07):
I would be fine with that happening at the major
league level, but the umpires not on your team. He's
not on either team. Sometimes you think he's against you
your team, but Saysar's on Fromber's team. Saysar helped guide
him to seven innings of shutout baseball less than a
week ago. He's on his team, and it just did
not look like it in that moment.
Speaker 12 (01:13:27):
When the dugouts clear, or when the dugout clears because
he hit his teammate. If that's what really happened, who
takes what side?
Speaker 13 (01:13:36):
There was a bench clearing incident, which is also ridiculous
last night, and I'm sure mister Freeland there in Colorado
is happy that this incident is much bigger. He got
kicked out of a game without recording it out because
he thought somebody pimped a homer in the first inning
of a game against you, the Rockies.
Speaker 9 (01:13:50):
It was Devers. Yeah, did pimp the homer.
Speaker 13 (01:13:53):
Okay, he thinks he was disrespected by him pimping the homer.
Good correction, Guys, pimp homers all the time. Okay, we'll
just leave it it all the time.
Speaker 9 (01:14:03):
We'll keep it simple.
Speaker 13 (01:14:04):
We won't curse, we won't go over the top, we
won't fall out of our chairs all the time. Is
a very good way to say it.
Speaker 9 (01:14:09):
All the time.
Speaker 13 (01:14:10):
Keep in mind also means during Dev's six hundred and
seventy five played appearances this year, he will do that
all the time, thirty one times, thirty two times, maybe
something like that. It's it's to me, it is a
total joke on the pitcher completely, and his own manager
(01:14:33):
basically said it after the game, and that's created a
different fire Stormlale. How did he not have his pitchers
back because his pitcher left his team needing twenty seven
outs because he couldn't handle giving up his billions home
run of the year. But that's we don't have any
liners that say your deep Southwest home for Colorado sports,
So we'll leave the Colorado situation will for another day.
Speaker 9 (01:14:57):
The situation in Houston.
Speaker 13 (01:14:58):
I'm glad for one thing because I think I know management,
I think I know the manager, I think I know
the coaching staff, and I think then I know the clubhouse.
Over and done, with not a lingering impact to the
rest of the season. Watch all the talking head shows
you want, whether it's TV or elsewhere on satellite, rep
whatever YouTube channels, they will all be asking that question,
(01:15:18):
how will this impact the Astros or the rest of
the way will fromber be in their rotation moving forward,
that's next. We will never say that, or I won't
because it's totally utterly ridiculous and it's a zero impact
on the twenty twenty five Astros. I don't think it
has an impact on the twenty six Astros either, because
neither will he. I don't think fromber Valdez is throwing
any pitches for the twenty twenty six Astros. The incident
(01:15:41):
isn't the reason why, but part of who he is,
which is why there was an incident, is some of
the reason why.
Speaker 9 (01:15:47):
I don't think he'll be here.
Speaker 12 (01:15:48):
By the way, speaking of pimping home runs, didn't think
that Jazz Chisholm was gonna be in the is he
typically a thirty home run guy.
Speaker 13 (01:15:57):
This will be the first to go round for that.
I never thought when they made that deal he's in
the home run derby. Just cut it out, you know
he's a home run hitter. I guess he hit one
more homer in the derby off a BP pitcher intentionally
trying to give him gopher balls. Then he hit last
night off with one of the best left handers and
another left hander in baseball.
Speaker 12 (01:16:16):
But like when they made that deal for him last year.
It just wreaked of desperation.
Speaker 9 (01:16:20):
He's good.
Speaker 13 (01:16:20):
He was at one time a very much plus offensive
player with Miami.
Speaker 9 (01:16:24):
Yeah, he was on the cover of the Show video
game at one point. It was awful.
Speaker 13 (01:16:28):
But twenty four homers in a season which was last year,
part of the time in Miami and then part of
the time in the Little league ballpark that the Yankees playing,
he set a career high with twenty four homers. He's
had far, far, far far fewer played appearances this year
and he's hit twenty eight home.
Speaker 9 (01:16:46):
Runs, two of them coming last night.
Speaker 13 (01:16:48):
Yes, he's had a better slugging percentage before because he
had missed part of the time. But I would not
have thought even the even Brian Cashman probably would have said, well,
when we get our thirty homers from Jazz Chisholm, well
we'll talk about it then, guys, next question.
Speaker 9 (01:17:02):
But they're gonna get thirty homers from Jazz Chisholm.
Speaker 13 (01:17:04):
They're gonna get thirty homers from Trent freaking Grisham, who
was almost unplayable last year for having zero offense. He
hit his third Grand Slam of the season last night
against the Astros.
Speaker 9 (01:17:16):
I'm aware and he looks stupid doing it.
Speaker 13 (01:17:17):
Didn't say Cody Bellinger, I didn't say Aaron Judge. I
didn't say Giancarlos Stanton. This is top to bottom, a
monster mashing, home run hitting lineup, and you'd like to
think somebody like Fromber could handle it. And if you're
not familiar with his work against the Yankees in the
regular season, it stinks last night was nothing new. One
(01:17:38):
appearance in the postseason against them, and he was nails.
Speaker 9 (01:17:40):
We'll take that. Everybody was that year though it was
twenty two and they didn't win a game. The Yankees.
Speaker 12 (01:17:47):
Yeah, it was not again the lead was buried, But
I'm wanna tell you what he did like else.
Speaker 9 (01:17:54):
What other lead was buried? The one that the Mariners
had no the.
Speaker 13 (01:17:58):
One that the Astros are reinstating another catcher to the roster,
Victor Karattini, Well, we knew that was coming, you know
what we thought it was coming. Today he was on
the field doing some based on activities. Who do you
think is gone? The guy who got crossed up totally wrong?
Three catchers will be on the roster starting tonight. Sit down,
Chas McCormick is optioned. He has options, so that's why
(01:18:20):
he is the player that's going sent down.
Speaker 9 (01:18:23):
He's going back to the Space Cowboys.
Speaker 12 (01:18:24):
It's one less automatic strikeout at least.
Speaker 13 (01:18:26):
He just it's rough for him to be a guy
that has options, but it's rough for him to be
a performer that opens the door for them to consider
that option.
Speaker 9 (01:18:35):
He comes up to the plate, and I don't expect anything.
Speaker 13 (01:18:37):
Well with with Jordan back and playing some outfield, with
Myers likely coming back no later day in the road trip,
clearly not coming back.
Speaker 9 (01:18:46):
I was going to be happy if it was today.
Speaker 13 (01:18:48):
He's got more rehab games in his future, and he
played again last night. I think they view center field,
as you know, here's what they did. They chose the
left handed bat, which is absolutely freaking, embarrassingly bad of
Jacob Melton over Chas McCormick. I think they maybe chose
Melton's speed because he can steal a base.
Speaker 9 (01:19:08):
He's a pinch runner. That's why he's down.
Speaker 13 (01:19:09):
They both to me, they're both similar center fielders, both
very much plus center fielders. But obviously Melton has options.
They chose to use the options on Chaz.
Speaker 11 (01:19:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:19:21):
I hope Jake has enough games under his belt, which
he will once he gets back to round in deform
into what was going to be clearly his best season
and still probably will it is. I mean it's not
even Yeah, the bar is pretty low. But oh geez,
there was once upon a time where it was twenty
twenty three where if you would have asked anybody who's
(01:19:42):
got a brighter future in center field for the Astros
if they don't make any other moves, Jake Myers was
not gonna be.
Speaker 13 (01:19:47):
The say, why are you pushing Jake Myers into this platoon?
It clearly should be Chaz's job. Signed all of us
two years ago.
Speaker 12 (01:19:56):
But that was two years ago when Chaz was a
functional baseball player. Forgets center fielder. Now he's like, I
don't know what happened. I mean, he made one of
the most iconic plays in Astro's history. He's still good defensively, Yeah,
I know. That's that's why I didn't say what the
play was. It wasn't a hit.
Speaker 13 (01:20:13):
What's his most iconic offensive moment?
Speaker 9 (01:20:16):
I'll wait.
Speaker 13 (01:20:16):
He homered against the Yankees in the postseason.
Speaker 9 (01:20:18):
I can scare.

Oh yeah, the little uh, the little skip a rock.
I forgot about that was a year before twenty three.

(01:26:21):
and I'll just ask you what I kind of stated
the other day. Is is the originally slated starting quarterback
for the Colts before all this mess happened?
Speaker 9 (01:26:32):
Is he a bust? Is he done? Is that where
you guys are at in Indianapolis right now?
Speaker 15 (01:26:39):
I think Anthony's time in India is certainly difficult to
salvage at this point outside of Daniel Jones getting injured.
So I would be hesitant to say that we've seen
the last of him, just because you know, as injured
as Anthony it's been, Daniel Jones has not had the
cleanest bill of health in his career either. But like
(01:27:00):
saying that, let's say twenty twenty six, he'll be in
the mix to be the starter that I have very
serious doubt about.
Speaker 11 (01:27:07):
Now.
Speaker 15 (01:27:08):
They're saying all the right things, they won't give up
on him, they still believe in his development and everything.
But I mean, can any of us think of a
quarterback's career who is really successful that got started out
this way without at least changing scenery, I would say not.
Speaker 13 (01:27:23):
Well, he doesn't throw the ball to where it's supposed
to go. That's pretty much the name of the game
for quarterbacks, no matter how athletic you are. And he
can't throw passes where they're supposed to go. And it's
been a two year long problem, if not also a
Florida problem for as little he was on the field.
So I think they're making the right decision. I thought
signing Daniel Jones, considering what their options were, was smart.
I don't even believe there was a quarterback competition, much
(01:27:45):
of one, and as much as Shane Steiken tried to
point towards one. So they have a poor quarterback yet again,
which has been the story ever since Andrew luck said
this is it for me.
Speaker 9 (01:27:53):
I'm out.
Speaker 13 (01:27:54):
Can they win games with the rest of their roster
in spite of what is likely subpar quarterback play?
Speaker 11 (01:28:02):
Well?
Speaker 15 (01:28:02):
I think so. I mean they've They've gone seventeen and
seventeen the last two years with Gardner Minshew, Joe Flacko,
and Anthony Richardson as their quarterbacks. So as you guys
well know, you know, twenty twenty three that was a
play in game there in Week eighteen. You know what
winner wins the division and if not for that botched
fourth down play against the Texans there at the end,
(01:28:23):
the Colts somehow may have won the division. So I
think it's what the Colts kind of see here is
you know, with Gardner Minshew, as unspectacular as he was,
he was at least someone that could execute what Shane
Stike and was asking of him. And I think they're
getting a slot. I think they think they're getting a
slight upgrade in Daniel Jones over Minshew in twenty twenty three.
(01:28:46):
And you know, outside of that, this is this is
a pretty decent roster that just needs reasonable quarterback play
in order to be back in playoff contention. I've seen
some you know, national pundits have kind of got and
even at Lowe was like four thirteen or five and twelve.
I think that's a little wild. I think they're they're
(01:29:06):
real ranges anywhere from like seven to ten to ten
and seven.
Speaker 9 (01:29:10):
Interesting.
Speaker 13 (01:29:11):
One of their players in particular, I think is kind
of like an acquisition. I've had three Fantasy drafts and
not one time has ad nin Mitchell been taken by
anybody auction or otherwise. It's basically to me like they
acquired him in the offseason because playing with Anthony Richardson
was useless for him. He kept getting open, and he
kept getting nothing to show for it because the ball
was nowhere near him. Do they have with now Warren,
(01:29:33):
their draft pick, Mitchell and Pittman obviously a healthy Jonathan Taylor.
Is that kind of where you're coming from saying I
think there's a talented group here.
Speaker 15 (01:29:43):
It is a pretty talented group now with eighty Mitchell.
His problems did go with Joe Flacco as well. As
much as he got open, he had a pretty poor
rookie season. There's just you know, he doesn't play with
a lot of urgency, and when the ball did get
to him, he kind of showed an aversion to contact,
(01:30:03):
you know here in footsteps and kind of gator arms,
so to speak. Now, with that said, he did have
a great summer and awesome summer. But the thing is
he's like the fourth receiver and he might be the
fifth or sixth option in the passing game when you
add in Tyler Warren in their running backs as well. So, yeah, Pittman, Pierce,
Josh downs Adie Mitchell should eventually figure it out. Like
(01:30:25):
they the Colts believe that he's really the most talented
receiver on the roster and saw you saw it start
to flash more often during training camp. But I don't know.
It's it's hard because I think a successful season for
him might even just be like thirty or so catches
because he's just there's just a lot of mouths to
(01:30:47):
feed in this offense, especially in the passing game. For him,
it's about efficiency and making the most of his opportunities.
But as far as you know, the Daniel Jones of
it goes with kind of a decent group of playmakers
around him, I would say, you know that outside of
that twenty twenty two season with the Giants where he
earned that big contract, I mean, this is probably the
(01:31:09):
best groups he's had around him. The offensive line should
be decent, got a tight end and Tygler Warren. He's
got these receivers. So if he can't really put it
all together here, it's going to be pretty tough to
justify him after this if he doesn't, if he doesn't
pull the strings.
Speaker 12 (01:31:25):
Talking to Indianapolis Colts with Jake Arthur here on Sports
Talk seven ninety Jake, what's your assessment of Chris Ballard.
Speaker 9 (01:31:33):
It's been an up and down tenure.
Speaker 12 (01:31:36):
It's been I think, well, in my opinion, it's been
a lot longer than I thought it was going to last,
just based on just the tenure he's had there, the
amount of time he's been in place, and everything that's
happened good and bad since he's been there.
Speaker 9 (01:31:49):
Is he is he on a hot seat? Do the
erses like him?
Speaker 1 (01:31:53):
Is?
Speaker 9 (01:31:54):
What's the deal with him right now?
Speaker 15 (01:31:57):
Yeah, I think it's fair to say he's absolutely on
the hot seats. I think most of us were surprised
that he survived last year, you know, him and Stike
and getting kind of one last go of it. But
I think the RSA sisters are having this season be
just a true evaluation period. And I don't know if
there's a mandate in place like playoffs or bust, but
(01:32:20):
I think the vast majority of majority of us around
here certainly feel like it's playoffs or bust because most likely,
regardless of how Jones says, you're probably in the quarterback
market next year. It's it's just tough, you know, it's
been four years without the playoffs. He's only made it
twice and this is now year nine, and that was
(01:32:41):
with Philip Rivers and Andrew Walckett quarterback. So it's it's
just more and more difficult each year that goes on
without any postseason birth or postseason optimism to keep him around.
And you know, if you're going to be searching for
a quarterback again next offseason, well, I don't think he's
really earned the trust to be championing that approach because
(01:33:06):
they have not gotten the quarterback position correct and the
luck retired, and it's it's always kind of been able
to be somebody else's fault. You know, you could tie
the quarterback to Frank Reich or Shane stike In or
this or that, and it's like at a certain point
you just got to move on and kind of figure
something out. Now there's a I think a very narrow
(01:33:28):
avenue for Ballard to retain his spot here, and you know,
you got to have you got to get to the postseason.
You got to have some building blocks in place for
next year to be able to really sell ownership on
this is our identity, this is where we're going. We
need you know this and this, and then we'll take
that big next step. But outside of that, it's it's
(01:33:49):
just so hard to justify giving it a tenth year.
Speaker 13 (01:33:53):
You cause said it's playoffs or bus you're talking about
Ballard's tenure. You talk about a possibility of a ten
win season needs to go to the playoffs. Isn't winning eight,
nine or ten games the worst thing that could happen
for the Indianapolis Colts because Daniel Jones, you said it yourself,
He's not gonna be the quarterback next year. So what
do you want a nine or ten win team being
quarterbacked by the guy on the way out? When it
(01:34:14):
lands you somewhere in the middle of the first round
of the draft, when you still need the same thing
you've needed since Andrew Lux said good riddance.
Speaker 15 (01:34:23):
Yeah, that's certainly been a hot topic around here. Is
you're just kind of you've kind of been stuck in
treading water area for quite some time.
Speaker 46 (01:34:33):
Now.
Speaker 15 (01:34:33):
You know, you're picking anywhere from fourteen to twenty. You're not,
you know, high enough in order to really go get
what you want. I mean, when you were, you got
Anthony Richardson. So there's there's certainly.
Speaker 22 (01:34:44):
Some validity to that.
Speaker 15 (01:34:46):
You hate just to just be in the middle. I
don't think I've quite ever heard as many fans clamoring
for a higher draft pick and a worse result of
the regular season than they are now. You certainly don't
want to root for losses or anything, but I think
the better thing they could do is just maybe flip
(01:35:08):
some assets for higher draft capital and move up in
the draft next year and what should be a pretty
good quarterback class.
Speaker 13 (01:35:16):
All right, last thing for you, if you can think
back for me, because it's such a huge topic here
in Houston, for what it resulted in with the Texans.
Texans go and score late and get the two point
conversion and win the game, and with it lose the
number one pick draft second it take CJ.
Speaker 9 (01:35:34):
Stroud.
Speaker 13 (01:35:34):
The resulting win for the Colts obviously impacted their draft strategy,
and it's kind of where they are now. Are they
also ticked off that the Texans one, we're able to
win that game.
Speaker 15 (01:35:47):
Well, in hindsight, the Anthony saying, you know, I don't don't.
I really don't think drafting Anthony was a mistake. I'll
be honest. I think whatever their plan was development of him,
that's what was botched. I don't think Anthony would have
just swapped in any scenario, and I don't I don't
(01:36:08):
want it to be lost in the fact that he
actually did have a pretty good summer and most of
us around here have thought that he won the quarterback competition,
so he showed some progress. But yeah, the way that
he was kind of brought into the league, they've even
admitted themselves in hindsight, was not what they would have
done if they got to do over at this point.
(01:36:29):
You know, I think C. J. Stroud was someone they
definitely would have wanted as well, as Stroud may have
even been their top quarterback, but they were very much
on board with getting Richardson. He wasn't considered a consolation prize,
so I don't think they would do that over, but
I do think they would love a review on his
development or lack thereof interesting perspective.
Speaker 13 (01:36:52):
Where Richardson stands, where the Colts stand and our trip
for the through the AFC South will continue. Jake, really
appreciate time, enjoy your coverage, and we'll hope to catch

Speaker 5 (01:42:16):
I'm loving all the combo this time of yours best
because you got college football. You guys are previewing AFC South,
getting ready for the NFL. We got Astros winding down,
get ready for playoffs. Hopefully, it's a lot going.
Speaker 9 (01:42:27):
On right now.
Speaker 11 (01:42:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:42:28):
We want to get into all the great matchups inside
the SEC, Big twelve, PAC twelve, Big Eight, and all
the great college football matchups this weekend because there's so
many of them. But we'd prefer to at least while
you're in here with us, get your opinion on what
took place last night, as you are the co host
of the Crawford Box Cast. Between Fromber, Valdez says Oar
Salves are within the Astros framework of what's supposed to
(01:42:50):
be a tightly knit team.
Speaker 5 (01:42:52):
He just added to the list of you know, little incidents,
little hiccups that make Fromber that Dana Brown did a
pretty good job this morning explaining it. As he's a competitor.
You don't want to take that competitive edge away from him. Sure,
but gosh, I mean, there's a reason why there was
a viral moment years ago. Was that the COVID year
when they had the cardboard cutouts where Carl's Kurreah had
(01:43:14):
to go rain him into a playoff series.
Speaker 21 (01:43:15):
And go do it.
Speaker 9 (01:43:17):
Hondy wanted to get after it.
Speaker 5 (01:43:18):
Get your stuff together, dude, you are a stud. Act
like a stud on the mound.
Speaker 9 (01:43:23):
It's just what he is, man.
Speaker 5 (01:43:24):
I mean, I was in the clubhouse about a week
ago and it's quiet. People are kind of doing everything
in the locker, and then it comes from singing at
the top of his lungs. You know, a Latin song
and going nuts and it's like, so who he is? Man,
It's just that is Fromber being Fromber, and it's like anything.
When he's on the mound, he's dominating and he's winning.
Speaker 9 (01:43:42):
You love it. When things go sideways, you don't love it.
Speaker 12 (01:43:45):
So that to me, what he just described you'll know
this wex. That's very jose Lima, like the way he
described him. But Jose Lima and Fromber Valdez are never
going to be confused with each other. And I don't
think that, for example, sample, I don't think the Astros
well maybe they could considering they change venues and he
wasn't the same player. But I just feel like we
(01:44:07):
are seeing the last days of Frombur in an Astros uniform,
and I don't think they're going to necessarily be like
some of the other guys that have departed in free
agency where you have that kind of wistful eye as
they're walking out the door.
Speaker 5 (01:44:20):
No, no, I mean, look, it's is Frober playing the
final days of an Astro's uniform. Yes, in a perfect world,
he leads this team all the way to the World Series.
He's in the World Series parade, and then he hits
free agency, it goes elsewhere, you know what I mean,
Like that still is the ceiling where things go well
down the stretch. But yeah, I gotta think that there
was something with Dana Brown if he was in the
(01:44:42):
box suite last night watching that happen on.
Speaker 9 (01:44:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:44:45):
See, this is why we're not, you know, and one
of the many reasons why we're not, you know, making
a hard push to try to keep this guy again.
Speaker 13 (01:44:53):
I'm talking about the incident or the fact that he
gave up six runs.
Speaker 9 (01:44:56):
Well both all the above on top of he's going
to have a high asking price. But it's just it's been.
It's always a roller coaster with the Robbert.
Speaker 5 (01:45:03):
For the most part, he's good when he is good,
he is one of the best pitchers of baseball, but
he has these roller coaster routings and hard headed. Remember
there was the biggest hit of last year where we
went off script. Just like night script, stay to the plan.
You are not smarter than what we put together.
Speaker 9 (01:45:21):
Yeah, very interesting in the way it all went down.
Speaker 13 (01:45:23):
Obviously we're going to weigh in on even more throughout
the day and probably throughout the rest of the season,
just for uh the ultimate well what did it due?
Did it snap him back into how he pitched his
last start or how he's pitched over the course of
the season and on down the line. The results of
the game is probably still more important than what frombers. However,
many games left with the Astros turn out to be
want to get your thoughts on the Texan season, so
(01:45:45):
we'll save some time here at the end. Most important
thing you found out last weekend through Monday of college football.
Speaker 5 (01:45:54):
It's a long season, though, don't overreact to what you
see week one. But on the flip side, I think
this new element that the College Football Playoff is gonna
play with that they're calling strength of schedule is going
to play a factor. I think you can't sit here
on a Monday and Barret Texas and Arch Manning and
Steve Sarkis and and say, what the hell are you doing?
(01:46:16):
Why did you look so bad at Ohio State When
they could have done with Oklahoma. Didn't schedule Illinois State,
Arch would have looked awesome.
Speaker 13 (01:46:23):
It would have been easy. Arch would have looked awesome
at home against them.
Speaker 5 (01:46:29):
I think he's gonna look awesome this week against San
Jose State in Austin. I just think look nerves played
a factor going into that environment. I talked with Sean
Salisbury about it. Uh Sark even said his footwork. He
even talked to him at halftime, Dude, your feet are
all off. Everything's off, and it's understood you're playing the
reigning national champs on their own in their house week one.
But point, it's give them credit for scheduling that game.
(01:46:52):
They could have scheduled a slappy and we all be
patting them on the back and praising them. I think
at the end of the season, if they get on
their stuff together defense was die, They're gonna be lights
out all year. This is a eleven to one, ten
and two Texas team that you know is compete for
a playoff spot. And if they're nine and three, give
them credit for that week one loss more than some
of these other slappies who don't play anybody.
Speaker 13 (01:47:14):
What about the big three wins Ohio State, LSU, and Miami.
What about those three teams? Ju jea buys you two
losses the rest of the way. Brian Kelly sitting about
do you think they're good or not?
Speaker 31 (01:47:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:47:24):
I think they I think LSU looked like I mean,
their defense it looks like the best they've had in
a decade. I know it's one game, but like we
haven't seen LSU defense jumping or flying around like that
pressure in Kate Klubnick cover corners, actually cover, So LSU
looked great. I thought Miami looked like a pretty pretty
complete team offensively and defensively. I mean, I like Carson
(01:47:46):
beckat Georgie cuts out the turnovers.
Speaker 9 (01:47:48):
He's just fine. And then who is the other in
Ohio State?
Speaker 5 (01:47:51):
I mean yeah, I mean the cornerback will know as
we go along with Julian Sayan develops. He did fine.
They didn't he didn't have to take over the game
or try to take over game or anything. Texas wuldn't
do anything on offense where they didn't have to do
much on offense themselves. So right now, yeah, those are
probably three of the best teams of the country.
Speaker 9 (01:48:07):
But you don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:48:08):
Georgia played Marshall. They looked awesome, but it's Marshall. Play
somebody tougher and let's see who you really are.
Speaker 9 (01:48:13):
How'd you think Alabama looked up dreadful? I mean, look,
it's one thing to lose to that's a different Florida state.
Speaker 15 (01:48:20):
Team.
Speaker 5 (01:48:20):
I was saying all offseason, they're gonna that's not the
same two and ten team that lost the year prior.
But Alabama just looked unprepared, poorly coached. And when you
say the words Alabama is five and five in their
last ten games, it's something you never thought you would
ever hear.
Speaker 12 (01:48:36):
Did they look more unprepared or did Bill Belichick's team
look more unprepared?
Speaker 9 (01:48:41):
I think there are a little bit different.
Speaker 5 (01:48:42):
Alabama brings back a ton of talent from last year,
and there's continuity with the same coach. Belichick's going through
kind of the same thing Dion did when he got
to Colorado. That's a hodgepodge of a roster, all different
pieces they bought in through the portal and all this
look On the first ride, they looked awesome, but after
you get out of the scripted plays, it didn't look great.
So they're gonna go through it. I don't It's probably
(01:49:02):
not gonna work. I mean, I know he got a
five year contract. The odds that Bill Belichick finishes out
that five year contract at North Carolina are not very high.
Speaker 13 (01:49:11):
I'll take the under on matching Deon Sanders work. Two
years in he won a share of the conference title
deon date with Colorado. Do not think Bill Belichick's Tar
Heels are gonna win even a share of his conference
and either of the first all of the years.
Speaker 5 (01:49:24):
He won his opener against TCU, Bill lost his opener
against TCU.
Speaker 13 (01:49:28):
You got a minute with us the Texans and Rams
open the season. What's the outlook for the Texans in
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 5 (01:49:34):
I keep looking at I was talking to a friend
who bought the new madd and he's playing at the Rams,
and I keep going that defense this video game, but
that defensive front for the Rams, it's good.
Speaker 9 (01:49:44):
I mean, so I just knowing, you know, you have
no mix.
Speaker 5 (01:49:47):
And I went through a couple of fantasy drafts the
last few days and Nick Chubb is kind of just
sitting out there for the taking. I don't think they're
gonna be overhill to run the ball very much, and
that means one dimensional. CJ's gotta throw it to win it.
I don't know if I feel good about that. So
this is gonna be a tough season over or put
it that way.
Speaker 13 (01:50:03):
What about the other sixteen times they play? Yeah, I
think they'll be better in some of those other ones
division title.
Speaker 9 (01:50:10):
They should do the favorites.
Speaker 5 (01:50:11):
I mean, you know, until somebody else shows their competent
has a pulse in this division.
Speaker 9 (01:50:17):
It's the Texans style, right, very convincing, very convincing.
Speaker 13 (01:50:19):

Talk seven ninety Space City Home Network winding down the
three o'clock hour thanks to both of our guests this hour,
Chris Gordy last segment, Jake Arthur before that, as a guy.
Speaker 9 (01:56:27):
Who how much Red Zone do you think you've even
watched in your entire life? None?
Speaker 13 (01:56:33):
Not none, but very little, Like even when it's a
road game and you're not at the stadium covering the
wekes available to me because I whatever services I've had
over the years, it's not been available. They've had a
bunch of free previews, so.
Speaker 12 (01:56:44):
You used it when it was free and all right,
So ESPN purchasing Red Zone, we already knew what was
going to happen, and I'm assuming call we have this
audio ready but you're a fan of Scott Hansen.
Speaker 13 (01:57:00):
Yeah, I think again. I'm usually threty dies man. You
can hire whoever you want.
Speaker 9 (01:57:04):
I'm watching for the game.
Speaker 13 (01:57:05):
Well, I'm not watching for the game because it's not
just one game. I think he does a fantastic job
and what is a very fast paced, moving, difficult job.
Speaker 12 (01:57:12):
Did you have a preference between him and Andrew Siciliano. Yes,
and I prefer Scott. Yeah, I do too, and I
like Andrew, who's now not with NFL Network anymore.
Speaker 15 (01:57:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:57:22):
I think the first time I watched Red Zone, I
think it was the Siciliano version because the place I
was living, that was the only option because he did.
Speaker 13 (01:57:32):
Now does Scott do any Scott Hanson Chris Hanson jokes
while he's on red Zone or.
Speaker 9 (01:57:38):
I hope so not while he's on red Zone, but
maybe off the air. Okay, but no, I like I.
Speaker 12 (01:57:43):
I do prefer Scott more so because I think he's
a little bit more He's a little less rigid, maybe
a little less have some.
Speaker 14 (01:57:50):
Fun with it.
Speaker 13 (01:57:51):
It's football at bouncing around all over the lace. You're
bound to see something or say something it's not quite right.
Speaker 12 (01:57:55):
Just keep moving and maybe it's Siciliano's ears bother me,
but not really.
Speaker 13 (01:57:59):
Are they off camera for almost the entire day the
put them on camera. I mean you're running through highlights
for an hour of time. How often do you see
the host?
Speaker 11 (01:58:08):
Do you like?
Speaker 9 (01:58:08):
In all seriousness, that is not an easy gig.
Speaker 12 (01:58:11):
I know you always say you can, just like he
does a great job, it is not easy and making
it sound the way he does now. He went on
the Pat McAfee show earlier today to talk about the
the number one thing that's going to irritate people, no
matter the format, no matter anything else. What does Scott
Hansen always say at the beginning of every single broadcast
(01:58:32):
each week, seven plus hours of commercial free NFL football
coming your way.
Speaker 9 (01:58:39):
Well he can't say that anymore. And here's why.
Speaker 62 (01:58:44):
The business folks handle the business, of course, and I
have no say over different elements that could could or
could not be in the show.
Speaker 9 (01:58:54):
And so I'll just tell you.
Speaker 7 (01:58:56):
Right now when you see me come on the air.
Speaker 22 (01:58:59):
Here we're to hit the octo box.
Speaker 62 (01:59:01):
We've got eight games in the early window taking you
around all the different cities. And then when we get
into it, ladies and gentlemen, it's been more than two
hundred and fifty days since the first full NFL Sunday,
but we are back, and seven hours of red zone
football starts.
Speaker 21 (01:59:18):
Now.
Speaker 22 (01:59:20):
Wow, I realized that might be a slight change to
some of you. But that's what That's what the catchphrase
will be going forward.
Speaker 12 (01:59:29):
We all want the stand, all right, So there's gonna
be commercials. I've already had the conversation with Wex off
the air. It's a lot like the conversation Wex and
I have whenever Taylor Swift and her appearances during NFL
games over and over and over again comes up? Why
can't you just ignore it? Except for in this case,
you can't. It's there.
Speaker 13 (01:59:49):
You've been watching games the last probably two or three years,
Space City Home Network, Rockets games or Astros games or whatever.
Speaker 9 (01:59:56):
They do this do it all the time. I hate it.
It doesn't matter to me. It does to me.
Speaker 13 (02:00:00):
I don't know how that's I mean, everybody has a
different opinion for everything, and that I can understand. I
just watched the game, and you know, I'm missing absolutely nothing.
It has not changed the way of you a game
in any way at all.
Speaker 9 (02:00:13):
Maybe you're right now, hasn't failed well.
Speaker 13 (02:00:14):
They're they're reading commercials during the time where nothing's happening.
First of all, Now red Zone may be a little
bit more difficult to do. That's why something's happening, and
clearly reading the commercial while showing the graphic is also.
Speaker 9 (02:00:25):
What they're doing.
Speaker 13 (02:00:26):
So maybe your your picture on the Jamison Williams sixty
five yard touchdown pass that you really really wanted to
see as it happened on Red Zone channel a couple
of seconds late, you're now not able to see quite
as well because they've minimized your screen a little bit
so they can pimp whatever phone company they're pimping that day.
Speaker 12 (02:00:42):
In all seriousness, this is the one format where it
does matter because of what you're talking about. There's not
part of the beauty of Red Zone is that. And
I used to say this, Oh crap. I didn't realize
when I started watching Red Zone. There's really no chance
to go to the bathroom or get a snack or
something like that. You' you're gonna miss something, you will, right,
but they're not taking it. I don't know what they're doing.
(02:01:04):
And he did not explain it, nor did they ask
him to. I think, what what you they're gonna reference
is what they're gonna do.
Speaker 13 (02:01:10):
It's not gonna change well, it's gonna change almost nothing.
Speaker 12 (02:01:14):
But if they're in a quad box situation, it's gonna
make the quads a lot smaller.
Speaker 13 (02:01:18):
They probably will take one of the games off and
put the commercial in one of them.
Speaker 9 (02:01:22):
Even worse.
Speaker 13 (02:01:22):
I mean, can you imagine a quad box. That must
mean none of the games are in a super interesting
point if they're showing all four of them at the
same time.
Speaker 12 (02:01:30):
To say nothing of an octabox situation, which is what
they do at the beginning of every week. This is
this quote, though, is just I think if this wasn't ESPN,
maybe I wouldn't have a slant going into it.
Speaker 9 (02:01:42):
Yeah, you don't even you do not know what it's
going to be. But I know I'm gonna hate it exactly,
doesn't everybody. They've already ruined WWS. They're gonna ruin this.
Speaker 13 (02:01:50):
They haven't even broadcast anything yet.
Speaker 12 (02:01:51):
Yeah, but it's it's coming. They're going to ruin it
because they ruin everything. This is an exciting day for
sports fans. Jimmy Petaro said he's the chairman of ESPN,
so he's a person I don't like either. By combining
these NFL media assets with ESPN's reach and innovation, we're
(02:02:12):
creating a premier destination.
Speaker 9 (02:02:14):
For football fans.
Speaker 12 (02:02:15):
That's funny because I thought that's what it already was
a premier destination for football fans every week before you
touched it.
Speaker 13 (02:02:21):
Well, not do the red zone channel, maybe, but not
NFL network.
Speaker 12 (02:02:24):
No, NFL network sucked. That red Zone's good. Why didn't
ESPN buy NFL Network and ruin that?
Speaker 9 (02:02:31):
They did? And they will.
Speaker 12 (02:02:33):
I just don't want them ruining this, and they will
because they ruin everything. Together, ESPN and the NFL are
redefining how fans engage.
Speaker 9 (02:02:40):
With the game. Blah blah blah blah dah da.
Speaker 12 (02:02:42):
I can't even make it through the quote. He sucks
and so does ESPN. They're gonna ruin inside the NBA.
They already have started to, you know how, They've already
started to ruin it. They're not gonna have it on
as much. Oh, but that's in the play, that's in
the contracts, right, That's what you're gonna say next.
Speaker 13 (02:02:57):
Charles wanted to work the same amount or war or less. No,
he probably wanted to work less, which is what is
in the contract. So they may not care about the fans,
like Charles said, but they do care about him. He's
gonna be paid a ton of money and work less.
You think he's against that.
Speaker 9 (02:03:14):
I don't care.
Speaker 12 (02:03:15):
I don't care if he's against it. I want the NBA.
I want the inside the NBA show to stay the
way it was. I mean, I didn't like when they
started bringing in lesser talent on the off nights. I
mean those those alternate sets sucked well. And that includes
Ernie Johnson.
Speaker 13 (02:03:31):
That according to the people who hate change. So you, yeah,
you there's nothing to do. You have the three hosts
or the three analysts and Ernie. If any part of
that is changed in any way on any given night,
you suck.
Speaker 9 (02:03:46):
Well, I'm out. It's not necessarily don't like, don't like hang.
Speaker 13 (02:03:50):
On like Draymond like, don't Jamal Crawford. Come on, dude,
that's like making that's what you just said.
Speaker 9 (02:03:56):
No, it's not. I'm not allowed to say it because
you won't let me talk. I'd listen to the whole
thing you done talking bringing the other people. I don't
like it.
Speaker 12 (02:04:03):
I mean, seriously, ye put three different people on a
set four different people on a set than the usual
four and call it the same thing.
Speaker 13 (02:04:09):
That's not the same. That's what I'm trying to say. Eventually,
I mentioned all the people that are on the alternate set.
Speaker 9 (02:04:14):
You don't like them?
Speaker 12 (02:04:15):
No, I said, you said that. I said it sucks,
And I'm not saying inside the NBA sucks. I'm saying
this version of it you're calling the same thing sucks.
There's a difference.
Speaker 13 (02:04:22):
I mean, they could change the title of the show,
but I doubt they would.
Speaker 12 (02:04:26):
Yeah, it would probably suck then too, no matter what
they call it, because it's not inside the NBA.
Speaker 9 (02:04:31):
That's the point.
Speaker 13 (02:04:32):
I don't think anybody expects the show like this to
last forever, no matter what had happened. And we had
that discussion before the buyout, before the contracts like, things
are going to change and they're not always going to
be what people like, and this is just the just
the way things are. Four o'clock hour will bring us
Dana Brown, Dimiko Ryans, and c J.

halfway point on a Wednesday edition of the program. Before
we get into what wex teased, which is Demico and
CJ weighing in on week one, we have some positive
breaking news. Now, I'm gonna give you two different options here.
(02:09:50):
You can go the very very dry and comical route
with Brian McTaggart's tweet, or you can go with a
little bit more of analytical but still dry and slightly
sarcastic version of things with Chandler Rome's tweet. Can I
give my own which will probably be a combination of
the two.
Speaker 13 (02:10:10):
Astros Fans brace yourselves, make sure your eyes stay on
the road, you stay seated, and you're paying attention to
what's around you. Esoch Perettas is back on the field,
field and grounder.
Speaker 9 (02:10:24):
That's very well done, so Chandler said.
Speaker 12 (02:10:27):
Esoch Peretta's just finished doing some running and right field
and is now taking ground balls at dik And Park.
Perettas had follow up imaging on his hamstring yesterday that
obviously was favorable.
Speaker 13 (02:10:38):
Brian McTaggart goes with the video caption of his video,
Do you want to see Esock Perettas field groundballs?
Speaker 9 (02:10:44):
That's video, That's what.
Speaker 13 (02:10:47):
It sounds That's absolutely what it sounds like. That does honestly,
the incident itself, and then the subsequent we need a
second opinion, and then the subsequent we're gonna go with
PRP Tree in hopes of returning. At no point during
any of that period of time that I think Eesak
Peretis would play baseball in the regular season for the
(02:11:08):
Houston Astros. And I'm almost swayed, but I do still
think there's a timeline issue. This is a really good sign,
both in that he's doing that and obviously the imaging
indicates it's good for him and he's ready to go
do those types of things. Twenty four games left when
you begin this series with the Yankees. Now twenty three
games left, a handful of series left, just a couple
(02:11:28):
of you trip out on the road, another trip back
out at home, one more home stand. There's very very
little time left, and it all I wouldn't say they
would frown on the lineup juggling that it would require
if he comes back, because he's probably the designated hitter
every single game that he plays, and I think he
would play in every single game that he was deemed
(02:11:48):
healthy enough for and doesn't need a medically scheduled off day.
While the team is playing a game. But this is
clearly a positive sign, as you said, positive breaking news,
and hopefully the time timeline will allow for his return.
Speaker 9 (02:12:01):
It's the next step towards a log jam.
Speaker 13 (02:12:04):
Yeah, it's a simple fix. It just might not be
ideal for the kind of baseball you'd like to play. Offensively,
it should be great. They need hitters in the lineup
that are patient, not the ones you say, hey, man,
stop being you take four pitches and then start your bat.
He actually is patient with a good eye, and they
just don't have many hitters in the lineup. It's basically
him and Carlos when they're together, which of course they
(02:12:26):
have never been together. Most everybody else is pretty aggressive.
Some are incredibly aggressive, like Jose Altuve and Yaner Diaz.
So again, as Carlos mentioned the other day in the clubhouse,
instead of trying to get guys who are naturally aggressive
and that's why they're here and successful at a major
league level, to start being passive at the plate and
taking more pitches and not being themselves. You just need
(02:12:47):
a little bit more balance in the lineup. He absolutely
will provide that the first day he is back in
their lineup. Whenever that is, And in my assumption, he
would be your DH every day, Carlos would be your
third basement every day. You aord On Alvarez would be
your left fielder every day, and Josel Tuve would be
your second baseman every day.
Speaker 9 (02:13:04):
Who's getting traded in the offseason.
Speaker 13 (02:13:06):
You can figure that out at another point in time,
because even still, you're really just creating a rotation of
those players because it's all the same positions. Isak Peretis
is not learning a position that none of those are
just said, he's not gonna play shortstop, Christian Walker's not
going anywhere. Presumably the right field job is Cam Smith's
or be Sue Sanchez. He's not gonna play center field.
You're the same limitations you have today are the same
(02:13:28):
ones you're gonna have next year. So even if you
want him to progress to a point that he could
field the position at second base, which I think is
gonna be awful, but so then nel Tuove gets to
DH one day, or he gets to play left field
and Alverrette, that's all you're doing. You're just creating some
flexibility to keep Alvarez off of his feet a little
bit more often. Keep Altuve from playing second base quite
(02:13:50):
as often. But I hate to believe sometime during twenty
twenty six you and I are gonna have any kind
of debate, realistic and serious as it might not sound,
like who do you think is a better second and
basement defensively, Jose Altuve or Estac Parretis, because that is
a dreadful thought to have that conversation.
Speaker 12 (02:14:06):
Like what this comes down to is trying to get
all these names into your lineup every year, but they, unfortunately,
because of the rules of the game of baseball, have
to play feeling positions.
Speaker 13 (02:14:16):
Why are you starting in a shift and playing there
the entire game?
Speaker 9 (02:14:19):
You know, it's funny.
Speaker 13 (02:14:20):
The shift would probably help this problem, or at least
soften the blow. You're still allowed to play five infielders
if the game allows for it the situation, but I
don't think they're going to start games with five outfielders
or five infielders. Maybe Estak can pitch.
Speaker 12 (02:14:37):
I mean, that's how the only way Chaz was staying
on the roster. It is bad in the lineup. But
now that they're healthy in pitching with their their returning guys,
now Chaz is gone.
Speaker 9 (02:14:46):
In the next few minutes.
Speaker 13 (02:14:47):
Hopefully, if everybody's in a good mood and it's not
a joke at Chaz's expense, maybe Joe Spott will be
asked who's his Chas McCormick pitcher?
Speaker 9 (02:14:58):
If needed?
Speaker 13 (02:14:58):
If a game gets Let's say, hey, Joe, if you
guys are beating somebody by nineteen runs, who would you
turn to to save your bullpen? Maybe if you mean
when you're up by twenty on the Yankees tonight, I
would probably present it like that, with their sucky pitcher going,
who's that Will Warren?
Speaker 9 (02:15:11):
Yeah, he sucks.
Speaker 13 (02:15:12):
Max Freed last night, Will Warren tonight. So hopefully a
little bit of change and fortunes for the Astros. But
we already said this before, it really doesn't matter who's pitching.
It's more about who they are, what they've been able
to do, and what they might do on any given day.
Give you a quick look at their lineup and then
get into the Texans. As we mentioned, also a quick
update on the Major League scoreboard of importance because the Rangers,
who are still four and a half games back, they
(02:15:33):
lost late last night. They are losing again today in
the sixth sitting to the Diamondbacks. So that six game
winning streak, we'll see if it turns.
Speaker 7 (02:15:40):
Into two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adam talking.
Speaker 22 (02:15:46):
Your team's.
Speaker 8 (02:15:50):
Adam Clinton and Adam Weitflord are the eight Team.
Speaker 12 (02:16:02):
It's the four o'clock hour here on a Tuesday edition
of the Eight Team Sports SOOX seven ninety Space City
Home Network.
Speaker 9 (02:16:07):
He's Wex I may see.
Speaker 12 (02:16:08):
Cole Thompson is our producer until we take you up
until six o'clock tonight. Astros and Yankees getting together for
the first of three Fromber and Max Freed. Your pitching matchup.
No Jordan Alvarez in the lineup for Houston tonight. He
is available, but essentially load management. In any minute now,
Joe spot is going to be speaking with the media
(02:16:29):
gathered there at Dyke in Parks. Maybe we'll hear a
little bit more, but if you heard the clip we
played from him earlier today on the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross, Basically that's what it comes down to, load
management against admittedly a left handed pitcher, where the Astros
lineup is going to be very very right handedly heavy tonight.
So that's something to keep an eye on as this
(02:16:50):
series gets underway, especially when you consider that the Mariners.
I'm just fascinated by this Rangers thing. I don't think
it'll last, but the fact that the Rangers are close
to the Mariners than the Mariners are to the Astros
right now going into play tonight is pretty incredible given
the injury just the sheer volume of injuries that the
Rangers have dealt with, but just who the injuries are two.
Speaker 9 (02:17:13):
They're some of their best players.
Speaker 13 (02:17:15):
Yeah, it's very not what should have happened, which is
why I rarely get into the very very popular conversation
of I think the schedule favors this team, well, this
team fit, it doesn't matter, especially this year. There are
a lot of things to point out in Major League
Baseball that show you exactly what we've been trying to
tell you, and I think most of you do realize
that there's no favorite in the American League. There's no
(02:17:38):
obvious choice. There are gonna be six teams in the
American League that make the playoffs, and each one of
them has a chance to win the American League pennant.
The Astros are not great, right, They're good their first place,
they played roughly five hundred baseball for more than a month.
They basically have one good month. They went nineteen and
seven in June, and there are two games within about
(02:18:00):
below five hundred every single month the entire rest of
the season. And even saying all that, the Astros, the Tigers,
and the Yankees, those are the only three teams in
the American League that win their home games more often
than they lose and win their road games more often
than those The only three American League teams that have
(02:18:22):
winning records both at home and on the road. Run
differential usually a pretty good indicator of how good your
team is. The top three teams in run differential in
the American League the second place Yankees, the third place
Red Sox, and the third place Rangers. If it was
(02:18:43):
run differential like maybe your fantasy football league is for
tie breakers with point scored or against or even point differential,
the Yankee or the Rangers expected win loss, which is
basically run differential, is eighty and fifty nine, as eight
more wins they should have based on their run differential,
(02:19:05):
and it's also eight and a half games better than
Houston's expected one loss. They're only twenty if only outscored
their opponents by twenty the Rangers have outscored their opponents
by ninety four runs.
Speaker 9 (02:19:17):
I'm glad they don't do it that way.
Speaker 13 (02:19:18):
Shows you they've pitched extremely well, lost a bunch of
close games, and I have my hand full of blowouts,
But this is that's a team on the outside of
the playoff picture. The Rangers are seventh in the American
League and they have the third best run differential. All
these teams are not dissimilar in enough major ways. Tigers
(02:19:40):
have the best record in the American League right now,
and when you get to the playoffs, you'll face tark Schooble.
If everything's set up right, then they win and finish
first or second game one, and then they'll still need
two more wins at least, if not all three, where
he'll pitch maybe once more, which I mean mis has
been okay. They're pitching staff's okay. Every team, every one
(02:20:02):
of them. They have holes, much more so than I
think in years past. There's been clearly much better Astros
teams that have reached the playoffs, but I think they've
also gone into the playoffs against much better Yankees outfits
and other Red Sox outfits than the ones these organizations
currently have.
Speaker 15 (02:20:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (02:20:20):
Look, it's the thing is the Astros haven't been able
to put.
Speaker 12 (02:20:24):
The Mariners away, and the Mariners haven't been able to
take advantage of the Astros being largely mediocre, which just
tells me everything I need to know about that division,
because you're talking about the team that's in third in
that division right now and any factor in the A's
which will be factors they're playing the Astros down the stretch.
I think they play the Mariners as well down the
stretch and they're good.
Speaker 13 (02:20:45):
Like I said, I don't think any I personally don't
think it matters who you're playing. It's all about you.
It's all about how you're playing. The Astros just they
welcomed in. When the Angels got here, they were in
last place. When the Rockies got here, they were in
last place. The Astros went four and three against because
they had nothing to do with who they were playing.
They couldn't score against any one of the seven pitchers
that started, not one of.
Speaker 9 (02:21:05):
Them, all of which had inflated eras.
Speaker 13 (02:21:08):
Even Kokuchi, they could have scored twelve runs against them,
and they got enough to win the game against him,
and played add on in the one they had one
beginning now they scored in five of the others. They
had small innings five different times, and those coming against Kokuchi.
They're just they at this point. I mean, we're not
(02:21:29):
figuring out who the Astros are. They have been this
for the entire season kind of no matter who's in
the lineup, but who's available to them. So be ready
for this to come down to it. The athletics remaining
schedule includes inside the division only the Angels and Astros.
Speaker 12 (02:21:47):
Okay, for some reason, I thought the Mariners played them.
So the Mariners only play the Astros as far as
other AOS teams down the stretch, or am I wrong
on that They play the Angels too, don't they?
Speaker 13 (02:21:58):
The Mariners remaining skaled because I just got finished telling
you how extremely important I find it. They have four
games against the Angels three games against the Astros remaining.
Here's why the Mariners have struggled to surpass the Astros.
They suck when they're not at home.
Speaker 9 (02:22:15):
Cleveland.
Speaker 13 (02:22:15):
They're not going to the playoffs. They lost two out
of three to Cleveland. Tampa. They're not going to the playoffs.
They're in Tampa this weekend. If they don't win one
of the next two days. That's another loss. Series series
before that on the road, swept by the Phillies. Series
before that in New York and williams Port, they lost
two of those three games. Series before that in Baltimore,
(02:22:36):
they lost two of those three games. They had an
eight game winning streak. The first seven wins came in Seattle.
So it isn't about who they're playing. But they finished
this road trip in Tampa and go to Atlanta after that,
and they're only remaining road trip. He's against the Royals,
who are right behind the Rangers in the wildcard race,
(02:22:57):
and the Astros, who they trail four games remaining for
Houston three game lead the Mariners have, in my opinion,
have to sweep them.
Speaker 9 (02:23:08):
If the Marriagers game don't sweep.
Speaker 13 (02:23:10):
The Astros, yeah, that's that series is here, right, So
if the Astros sweep them, division's over. That means you've
got a six game lead with eighteen other games to play.
If they take two out of three, you got a
four game lead with eighteen other games to play, or
twenty one other games to play. The math is definitely
working against them. Yeah, I mean they would they would
have to go on an unbelievable run, which they clearly have.
(02:23:32):
They have a long winning streak, they do often display
the pitching capable of doing that. But in addition to that,
one thing almost brought it up with Spencer Araghetti when
we had them on because he was talking about Carlos
Carrea over at third base. If you've watched some of
these games where the Mariners have come out on the
wrong end of it on the road and just recently
or any part part of the season, not a good
(02:23:54):
defensive team. No, give a lot of extra opportunities to
the opposition constant.
Speaker 9 (02:24:00):
And it's everywhere.
Speaker 12 (02:24:01):
It's not just all the infield messed up this double
play or just this couldn't scoop. They're do stupid stuff
in the outfield, Yes they do. I mean Julio Rodriguez
is at the top of the list.
Speaker 13 (02:24:12):
Not much for a taking the right path to a
baseball now, He's no zach Netto when it comes to
trying to catch a throw from the first basement like
he did yesterday.
Speaker 12 (02:24:20):
That was hilarious zach Neto for a guy who plays
on the Angels, which is basically just an inconsequential team
to what the Astros are trying to do. He annoys
the Bejesus out of me.
Speaker 13 (02:24:31):
Yep, he's a he's easy to put on your Oh
get this guy out of your team. I don't want
to say hate, but he would certainly fit there. But yeah,
that's what the Astros have on tap. They've put themselves
in this good position with enough of the season going
the way it has. There were a lot of moments
over the four games since we last spoke, or three
games over the last handful of days that put them
(02:24:51):
in this position. What they got from cam Smith has
been a little bit on the uptick, a little more
of it defensively than offensively, and honestly, you know, getting
it a late home run from Jose Al Tuve, getting
Ramon Urieus to not only hit the homer, but he's
hit the ball extremely well. You go back and look
at what was done and what wasn't done by Dana
(02:25:13):
Brown at the trade deadline. You can you have to,
I think you have to be in the pat him
on the back for the thought the three offensive players
position players they traded for made absolute perfect sense. You
knew the deficiencies of Sanchez, You probably don't want him
batting against lefties ever, you felt like he could help
you offensively, and he's capable in the outfield in both corners,
(02:25:37):
and that's what he's been. Carlos Korea, I think has
been exactly what you hope for. I don't even think
more or less. I think he's been exactly what he
was for the most part in Minnesota. You'd be surprised
at how often he's been out there and how many
at bats he has and how many games he has.
His Harvey I total is outrageously low for the opportunities
that I think he's had this year.
Speaker 9 (02:25:57):
But he's been awesome at third base.
Speaker 13 (02:25:58):
You knew he would be even though he hadn't played
the position, and he's been fantastic over there. Heck, one
of the this past weekend, both he and Lance mccullors
having to catch rockets off the bat in that same game.
And then Eureus is to me, he's basically Mauricio Dubon,
but better better at the plate. I think Dubon is
(02:26:21):
a phenomenal second baseman, and I think Eureus is better.
Speaker 9 (02:26:24):
Well, he's a Gold Glover, is he not?
Speaker 12 (02:26:26):
But so is Maurici. That's true. They both have won that. Yeah,
it was nice to see him do something offensively yesterday.
Speaker 9 (02:26:34):
Curius. I think he's been good.
Speaker 13 (02:26:37):
I think he's been like he's The home runn he
hit was typical of so many others, except this one
went over the fence. I can count three times at
least I believe where he's hit the ball. How far
away is that? Three hundred and seventy five feet? All right,
I'll hit it three hundred and seventy four and a
half feet and I'll get stranded on second instead of
having a two run homer. I'll maybe drive in a run,
(02:26:58):
but I'll get stuck in. He's been, He's so close,
he's driven the ball so tremendously well. Both of his
hits in yesterday's game one went over the fence and
one hit the fence. Something else also hit the fence,
and unfortunately that was Taylor Ward's face, and that's why
he was cut so quickly and immediately knew they needed
medical attention out there to them. We'll readdress that situation
(02:27:20):
coming up at four thirty. But a few other items,
both on the Astros and the Texans we've not yet
gotten to, especially this particular matchup this weekend with a
very particular defensive lineman that has already had his way
in one way against the Texans.
Speaker 9 (02:27:35):
I'll explain that next.
Speaker 22 (02:27:38):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 12 (02:27:46):
Eight team Rolling along here on a Tuesday edition of
the program, Joe Spota speaking to the media right now,
among other things, each perettis Josh Hater getting their follow
up imaging done today on their respective injuries. That's according
to Joe spot A via Chandler Roum's Twitter account.
Speaker 13 (02:28:04):
Yeah, I've heard Robert and Steve yesterday during the broadcast
mentioning that the tomorrow now today was the day that
the expectation was Esoch would get that follow up imaging
and Hatered similarly, that was what they initially said. Gott
to just give it time to calm down, as they say, medically,
(02:28:24):
and then see where things stand at that point in time.
And in the case of Hater, maybe it opens the
door in a couple of days for some sort of
slow throwing program to see if there is a possibility
with twenty four games left in an Esoch's case, a
similarly with a running program, I don't think he would
be at that point, no matter what the MRI says.
Just based on the severity of the injury. But it's
(02:28:46):
why he went this route. It's why he hoped to
find a way back to their roster and hope to
give Joe Aespota a lot of thought before each and
every lineup that he puts together. He's got Gold Glove
caliber second baseman available to him and Ramonarius and Mauricio Duban.
He has Carlos Corea as his everyday third baseman. He
(02:29:11):
has two left fielders in Jose Altuve and Jordan Alvarez,
and then he would also have Esach Peretis, who doesn't
play left field, doesn't play second base, might be able
to play first base every really remote once in a while.
And then you have your designated hitter spot. You can
(02:29:34):
make it work. Jose's int second, Jordon's in left isak
is your DH, and Carlos is at third. That's pretty
much your only option. And you clearly are giving something
away at second base defensively if you do so, and
potentially also in left field with Jordan.
Speaker 12 (02:29:52):
Yeah, and I I'm still I know this is like
a very very minor thing. I feel like Victor Carrottini's
gonna factor in somehow he's just and I guess that
would just involve Joe switching up the catching duties more
than anything else.
Speaker 9 (02:30:11):
It's the simplest way to do it.
Speaker 13 (02:30:12):
You mean he's gonna play more than Jiner, I guess
is that what you mean? I don't know of more,
but fifty to fifty at least, I feel like I
doubt it personally, do you? Who do you feels more
clutch right now or has been in twenty five? That's rhetorical.
I'm not gonna fall for well, then why wouldn't you
do that?
Speaker 15 (02:30:29):
Then?
Speaker 13 (02:30:30):
I do think there is some perceived value definitely by
this team for exactly the reasons you said, even though
it would be great for him to come through clutch
with runners on second and third and the second inning
or fifth inning or sixth inning. But Keratini as a bat,
a left handed bat off of their bench where you
(02:30:50):
get to pick where he hits because he's a bench hitter,
I think they hold some value in that. Jannerdy Az
is just a major League baseball player on your roster.
When it comes to when you want to pinch hit him,
I don't think anything different of him as a clutch hitter.
Speaker 9 (02:31:02):
He's just a hitter.
Speaker 13 (02:31:03):
I do value from a clutch gene standpoint. Victor Krarrottini.
You can't ignore he's done.
Speaker 9 (02:31:10):
No, you can't.
Speaker 13 (02:31:11):
He's been like as catchers go, the last eight weeks
around the American League, he's been one of the most
productive catchers all around the whole league's He helped them tremendously.
He also helped them balance the lineup, and for that reason,
with the excessive amount of right handed pitchers, they would
see I do think the opportunity is there. Your case
is probably still the right one. Like the soundness of it,
(02:31:33):
the theory behind it. We're gonna face right hand pitching
three out of four days.
Speaker 9 (02:31:37):
I'm gonna get Yordon in the lineup.
Speaker 13 (02:31:39):
I'm gonna get Haeslus Sanchez in the lineup, and I'm
gonna get Victor Krrottini in the lineup. And that helps
balance it out. That makes perfect sense. I bet you
we don't see it quite like that, because Jordon will
give them the balance all by himself, so to speak,
that they don't feel like they need an additional lefty
in Victor to do so. Victor's good enough behind the plate.
He's not gonna throw a pretty much anybody out ever,
(02:32:01):
and nobody is well, you've seen Yiner at least twice
on this home stand brilliant throw, super pop up time
right on the bag, doesn't matter. The runner's practically already
standing up at second base, so practically already put his
foot on the bag and bouncing up. But he's significantly
better at that. And I do think that's a very
important part of the Astros defensively, that they need to
(02:32:22):
be at their best.
Speaker 9 (02:32:24):
We'll see.
Speaker 13 (02:32:25):
I think it's an interesting plot of this lineup to
follow because I can't deny what you're saying makes makes
perfect sense.
Speaker 12 (02:32:33):
Is Yiner struggling at the plate at times just a
matter of just being one of those parts of the
year or is there something more to it, because man,
he was getting some serious hate online this weekend.
Speaker 13 (02:32:48):
Definitely don't pay any attention to that.
Speaker 12 (02:32:50):
Well, yeah, I know, I'm just saying that the reasons
he was getting that hate is just it looked like
he was swinging at whatever.
Speaker 13 (02:32:59):
Are the people you're talking about, brand new where they're
just born melt their first day on the X platform. No,
I think swings too much. What do you guys think
I've met him, and I've talked to him and I've
watched him as a major leaguer.
Speaker 9 (02:33:11):
Are you new here? Okay? Put it this way. Has
it been that predominant the entire time.
Speaker 12 (02:33:17):
His entire career?
Speaker 9 (02:33:18):
Absolutely?
Speaker 8 (02:33:18):
One hundred.
Speaker 9 (02:33:19):
Like There's been times where he's been a little bit
more discriminate, as it were.
Speaker 13 (02:33:23):
He's he had a he's basically been a flipp it,
and I hope that continues.
Speaker 9 (02:33:28):
This month.
Speaker 13 (02:33:29):
He opened the season awful month of April. May was fine.
His ops was seven ninety five, he hit two eighty,
no problem. He wasn't very good in June. Then his
ops was eight forty two. In July hit two ninety again,
that's great. And his August wasn't very good. And now
it's a new month, so hopefully this is a good month.
Speaker 12 (02:33:50):
I remember, and I just got done saying this about
Victor Carrattini. I was just pining for him to be
more of an everyday catcher. His rookie year, Dusty's last year,
and everybody first year here, yes, his first year, sorry,
and everybody was killing Dusty for not using him more.
And it just I guess it's born itself out.
Speaker 13 (02:34:13):
You're talking about Krotini. No, I'm talking about Yer back
when you said Karatina, I'm sorry, sorry, I misspoke. When
Yer was a rookie and obviously a plus offensive player,
and Martin Maldonado was just slightly below average as an
offensive player. Just so close, so close, that's very, very nice.
It was not just that's different in this case. It
(02:34:33):
wasn't just people on Twitter Astros. Twitter doesn't like this.
I think respectable people had questions about why you would
do it.
Speaker 9 (02:34:43):
I said it.
Speaker 13 (02:34:43):
I'm sure it was within the last two weeks because
Martin Maldonado VI Jiner Diaz plus Dusty has come up
a lot. I think Dusty did it right. I think
he made the right call, and I think he made
the right call for all the right reasons. You might
have had different games. You might have had more offense
in some of those games, but I think you would
have had poorer pitching and different things would have played out.
(02:35:05):
You also don't have an option of going to Martine
off the bench. You would never use him as a
pinch hitter. You certainly could with the ironer. But I
thought Dusty he was right. That's I mean, that's all
I would say. He was right in my opinion.
Speaker 12 (02:35:17):
Let's see what we think about what Joe Spotta says
about giving Jordan Alvarez the day off.
Speaker 30 (02:35:22):
Good, good, good, just trying to keep an eye on,
you know, total volume and how even covers however, bounce suspect.
Speaker 9 (02:35:27):
But he's you know, he's ready to come off the bench,
and you know he'll be and you's all just a
day off.
Speaker 12 (02:35:35):
Nothing, basically what we all thought based on his comments
earlier here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 9 (02:35:40):
That's all there is to it. I still want him
in the lineup. I'm sure Joe does too. It wouldn't
kill him if he was.
Speaker 13 (02:35:47):
They're not looking to just keep him alive and breathing.
He sure, I'm pretty sure he's in bubble wrap. I mean,
we went through this earlier when we first heard from
Joe's spotted talking about this. I would there's two they're
not enough games left, you have enough off days. That's
the management I would use. That's the Again, I'm not
hearing from the doctors, though, I'm saying that without the
(02:36:08):
knowledge that they have, without whatever information they were given
about how to try to keep this at its best.
His hand, his unsurgically repaired hand non surgically repaired. They're
trying to keep it in place. They're trying to keep
him in the lineup as often as possible. So I
only say that without that knowledge, they have more than
(02:36:29):
I do. I would assume that's got to be a.
Speaker 9 (02:36:31):
Big reason why he gets an operation this offseason. I mean,
I don't know.
Speaker 13 (02:36:37):
I'm glad we're talking about the astros, so I'm allowed
to speculate on that. I would think so, except I
don't know why the timeline has so much to do
with it, because if he needed surgery on this, and
obviously they did not know that at any point in time,
to the point they didn't have any at all. But
it seems like it had had it that been necessary,
(02:36:58):
that they should have known about that the few weeks
not and he probably would have been out for the year.
He probably would have been out the same amount of time.
Speaker 9 (02:37:04):
It feels it not.
Speaker 13 (02:37:05):
It clearly wasn't cut and dry, That's what I would say.
It wasn't obviously he meaned it. It wasn't obvious that
he didn't, because after the bone healed, they still didn't
really know what was wrong with him. They still didn't
really know what was creating the soreness.
Speaker 12 (02:37:16):
He feels like a guy where he's good once he
gets the operation done, but he's needing operations on like
all sorts of parts of his boy. He was it
was both knees right, and it was this, it was
this creaky question. And then he got him surgically repaired
and they've been fine ever since.
Speaker 13 (02:37:34):
He has had different but persistent problems with his hands
as a major League baseball player. That's just what's happened.
There's no question about. We're two years into the spot
of managerial train with the Astros, and the previous manager,
Dusty Baker, had countless media availabilities talking about Jordon's hands.
Speaker 9 (02:37:53):
That was two years ago.
Speaker 13 (02:37:55):
Jordan had countless media availabilities at his locker talking about
his hands, or at the wall in the clubhouse talking
about his hands. Left hand, I don't know, Right hand,
I don't know. Does it feel good, I don't know it.
It's been persistent. Presumably the fix is surgery, but I'm
speaking way out of turn.
Speaker 9 (02:38:15):
I don't know that.
Speaker 12 (02:38:16):
Speaking of walls, I'm glad you brought that up, because
there will be one. That is a great topic of conversation.
Next segment it's our signature segment.
Speaker 9 (02:38:24):
It's say what you know.
Speaker 12 (02:38:25):
We'll involve a certain wall inside Dik and Park the
eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 7 (02:38:36):
This is Adam and Adam sweetly choked through mind barckling
moments that make.
Speaker 9 (02:38:41):
You go, say what.
Speaker 30 (02:38:45):
What?
Speaker 35 (02:38:46):
What?
Speaker 30 (02:38:46):
What?
Speaker 8 (02:38:48):
Ted is here?
Speaker 9 (02:38:49):
What are you talking about on a Tuesday way? What odin?
Speaker 8 (02:38:54):
I dare you now?
Speaker 15 (02:38:56):
Say? What?
Speaker 13 (02:39:00):
Host of things you can get to here? Best of
X being cut short to non existent because Spencerraghetty joined
us at two thirty. I know what we are getting too,
so I'm not asking the question. I'm just presenting these
as options. We're gonna get to the X handle and
admin for TCU football because they are absolutely killing it.
(02:39:24):
After TCU football absolutely killed North Carolina.
Speaker 9 (02:39:27):
Like Jordan's Boyfriend's team.
Speaker 13 (02:39:29):
Correct Probably best of X material was found on at
Ben Verlander at Justin Verlander had a pretty good outing
the other day. But from a Best of X standpoint,
Ben has been walking down this path for quite some
time and he found a home with it with one
post in particular, but we have to go this route.
(02:39:52):
Taylor Ward ran into the metal scoreboard manual scoreboard over
at DYK in Park on a Sunday afternoon on Ramoniaieus's
line drive. He hit it face first and immediately went
down to a knee, immediately waved towards the Angels, dugout
to come out there, and then almost as quickly got
(02:40:14):
up on his feet and was clearly at least coherent
enough and thinking clearly that he started walking toward his
team's bullpen, which was only about ten steps away. They
were able to come out of the bullpen, Andrew Chaffin,
their lefty reliever, towel in hand, was able to immediately
put that to his face where he was bleeding profusely.
Had a cut just above his eye on his forehead,
(02:40:36):
and he clearly knew it immediately because he could see
it flowing out of his head when he was down
there on the ground. It took a long time for
both medical staffs to get out there and treat him
as best they could on the field. Kart comes from
the opposite end of Dyke and Park put him on
the back seat, and it only was on the outfield
(02:40:58):
warning track both out there and back, and very slowly.
Because of the nature of the injury, this is an
extremely long delay and it turns out, I think best
case scenario kind of situation with Ward stitches to correct
clearly is okay, beyond the obvious, and it could have
certainly been worse. But it prompted some total tomfoolery nonsense
(02:41:21):
from a reporter who covers the Los Angeles baseball area,
Alden Gonzalez. There's an underscore in there somewhere, he says,
feel terrible for Taylor Ward, and he posted it, and
that was it. I'm just kidding, he said, feel terrible
for Taylor Ward, who once took a fastball to the
(02:41:42):
face and now had this happen.
Speaker 9 (02:41:44):
We're already going down a very bad path.
Speaker 13 (02:41:47):
He has roped us in already in recognizing that this comment,
this post, this typing work, is going to be stupid awful. Yep,
he adds also again brilliant written. Also, the same organization
that thought it'd be a good idea to put a
hill in its outfield still has a medal out of
(02:42:07):
tannoo out of town scoreboard in the field of play
returned return, so he could get the word all by
itself stupid. All right, you want to go first, you
want me to, We're never I mean, we can take
this to six o'clock. We can probably tell I will
can we can go a long, long way with this.
I'll go with the comment that basically was the one
(02:42:28):
I sent your way, and it comes from Dustin Park's
been open for twenty five seasons. Twenty one hundred and
sixty four games have been played there. I'm not sure
all those like I tried to figure out the number,
but with stupid COVID, I kind of gave up. I'll
take his word for it. This is the first time
this has ever happened. Sucks that it happened, But the
whining about the scoreboard he used a different word, is misplaced,
(02:42:51):
and your take just sucks.
Speaker 9 (02:42:53):
It does suck.
Speaker 13 (02:42:54):
I've been to a lot of games there. You've been
to a lot of games there. Fans who commented on
this has been to a lot of games there, and
even more so, we've watched a lot of games there,
and I would agree. People have banged into the wall.
People have been hurt up against.
Speaker 14 (02:43:04):
The wall, through the wall.
Speaker 13 (02:43:07):
Michael Brantley, I nobody has that I'm aware of, has
faced first the wall like he did. Nobody that I'm
aware of has cut themselves like he did. And the
secondary comment that I sent your way, which is all
over this timeline as well metal out of town scoreboard
at dyke In Park, and that's it. Nowhere else in baseball,
(02:43:29):
nowhere else, even in the exhibition in minor league ballparks
that they're using this year. Nowhere else does any ballpark
cheaters or otherwise people who put hills in their outfield
or otherwise do they have anything that could possibly injure
a player. One hundred percent of every ballpark in Major
League Baseball, both along the foul lines and in the outfield,
(02:43:51):
are one hundred percent padded. Some of them use waterbeds
to make it even more comfortable for the running into
the wall players.
Speaker 9 (02:43:57):
And there are a few out there all of you did, yeah,
just as nice as can be.
Speaker 13 (02:44:01):
Some of them are phone pits, just whatever we can
do to make sure there's no way you'll get hurt.
There are no brick walls in Major League Baseball covered
with ivy, There are no chain link fences, there are
no additional metal scoreboards.
Speaker 9 (02:44:15):
And for those of you that are just tuning in the.
Speaker 13 (02:44:17):
Amount of sarcasm I'm throwing on the radio right now,
is a never ending supply. Those things are all over
Major League Baseball. Not every park, but a lot of them.
It's a freak occurrence they could possibly have. Like, It's
just it boggles the mind, the attention. I know, I'm
(02:44:37):
bad at this game. I don't play as many games
on social media as clearly I should. This is game playing.
It's not though, this is trawling, this is farming for activity.
I'm not even kidding when I say this. I think
he's dead serious.
Speaker 12 (02:44:55):
He's just that stupid, which is ironic given the last
word in his oar aarograph of drivel that he wrote.
First of all, Taylor Ward, who once took up fastball
to the face. That was the astro's fault too, apparently
because of this happening. And why would you even mention
that guys get hit in the head all the time?
It's baseball, which, oh, by the way, is the point
(02:45:16):
of this.
Speaker 9 (02:45:16):
Guys run into things all the time, it's baseball.
Speaker 12 (02:45:19):
He plays left field, maybe watch where you're going, because
he clearly didn't or he just didn't see the wall
coming at him, attacking him with no remorse is what
happened here, according to Alden Gonzalez. Now, let's talk about
the fact that he's comparing these two organizations and calling
them stupid for things they've done. Yeah, I agree with him,
tals Hill, that was stupid putting a light I'm sorry
(02:45:41):
I was quoting somebody else that didn't know what they
were talking about. It wasn't a light pole, it was
a flag pole. But whatever it was in the field
of play on said Hill also stupid. You know what
else is stupid? Hiring an opioids dealer that killed one
of your players. That's stupid too, But nobody mentioned that.
Because Astro's Orange team bad, they cheat and the Wall
attacked Taylor Ward? Are you kidding me? Dodgers hawk, because
(02:46:04):
that's what he is. Forget that he covers the LA area,
He covers the Dodgers for ESPN, and he did what
he was supposed to do every time he changed the narrative.
Speaker 9 (02:46:15):
There is no narrative Alden, and I swear.
Speaker 12 (02:46:18):
Somebody saved him from me attacking him online with the
fiery passion of a thousand sons because this guy's a jackass.
Speaker 13 (02:46:25):
Yeah, the Wall stuff, tals Hill. The flagpole similar to
the metal out of town scoreboard for each of those
twenty and sixty four games before Sunday. Right, nobody ever
got hurt on the hill, Nobody ever ran into the
padded flagpole.
Speaker 9 (02:46:42):
It's there.
Speaker 13 (02:46:43):
I would also agree maybe it's dumb, but somebody pointed
that out. Yep, they're dumb things in all ballparks, right.
If they're not dangerous and nobody's ever getting hurt, then
what I don't care in this particular discussion.
Speaker 12 (02:46:54):
Somebody pointed that out twenty years and all that, and
this guy says, Oh, no one's dead yet, so it's
totally safe. Guyserners fan of course, Hey, you know what,
You shouldn't get in a car then, because you could
die in it today. That's the logic. You can't get
in a car. It's dangerous and the astros created cars
that kill people.
Speaker 13 (02:47:10):
If that's what he's saying, Eric, we'll close with this,
even though, like I said, we could go till six
if only there was a warning track.
Speaker 9 (02:47:17):
Hope this guy's okay, but this take is dumb.
Speaker 22 (02:47:20):
Agreed the a on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 12 (02:47:30):
I'd like to say, I still can't believe he sat
down and type that out, but I can.
Speaker 9 (02:47:36):
He had all thin.
Speaker 12 (02:47:37):
Gonzalez had a really hot take about something recently. And
I can't remember what it was about. Is something with
the rules of baseball or something something or other. He's
he's one of a kind. Actually he's not one of
a kind. There's several like him at ESPN. But yeah,
that was by the way ramoniais stopping at second base,
(02:48:00):
pretty classy considering the situation, like when you had to
well when you're running, he kind of get going. The
guy's down the balls.
Speaker 13 (02:48:07):
Like somebody else had the ball. Huh, the center fielder
had the ball or the shortstop had the ball.
Speaker 9 (02:48:12):
I thought the ball was lost that he could have
made it the third for some reason. Definitely not.
Speaker 12 (02:48:16):
Okay, Well then I misremember how I saw that, But yeah,
that was what I was watching that. And you could
see when he got it, like before you saw the blood,
you knew the blood was coming.
Speaker 9 (02:48:29):
With the way he was reacting.
Speaker 13 (02:48:31):
Yeah, if you're hurt, you're down. He wasn't, so to speak, hurt.
He was more, oh my gosh, the blood's flying out
of my forehead above my eye.
Speaker 9 (02:48:40):
He passed concussion protocol, did he not. He's gonna be
back in like a day or two.
Speaker 13 (02:48:44):
Yes, Like I said, for him to react the way
he did, he was to me super coherent. He immediately
said come out here. I'm bleeding with his actions, and then,
knowing that well, the dugouts pretty far away, he stood
up and slowly walked, staggered a little, but slowly walked
towards there. And that happens to be where the bullpen
door is, right there in that corner below the donut.
(02:49:07):
And they clearly you could see them rustling around in
the bullpen as soon as they heard it.
Speaker 9 (02:49:13):
I was at the game. It's a pretty distinct sound.
Speaker 13 (02:49:17):
It's the same sound you hear when anybody runs into
that metal scoreboard with their shoulder, their you know, their
back whatever, And it's happened many times before. But it's
not the normal ballpark sound. Normal ballpark sounds are, you know,
bouncing off the padding. You really don't hear unless it's
a player and you're out there. You hear bad hitting ball,
You hear bad hitting something behind the plate like the
(02:49:38):
catcher or the ump. You hear gloves popping. That sound
you don't hear very often.
Speaker 9 (02:49:42):
It's only a car crash.
Speaker 13 (02:49:43):
Probably, Well, it sounded like something was hitting metal.
Speaker 12 (02:49:47):
The thing is, I mean, we've been out there a
bazillion times we've shot videos out there during the Astros
postseason runs, we were out there. The last time we
were that close was the the the auto show that
Dyke and Park had recently, where you're you were walking
along the warning track where there were insane vehicles all
(02:50:08):
around the perimeter of the field, and you know, I
was down there with with Teresa and Carson, and Carson
just thought that was so cool that he could actually
reach out and touch that wall. It's very very thin metal,
and I don't I'm trying to figure out which part
of it, the way it's designed, is what cut him.
Speaker 13 (02:50:23):
It's probably, if I'm not mistaken, where you slide in
the numbers, and just some of it is not It's
not smooth.
Speaker 9 (02:50:29):
This is the easiest way to describe it.
Speaker 13 (02:50:31):
In between some of the teams where they're listed in
between each of the places for the numbers, whether it's
the score or the the pitcher's number, they're all it's
it juts out. It's I'm not surprised he was cut.
And most everybody else that hits it hits it with
something that's covered, whether it's their head with their hat
(02:50:53):
or their body with their uniform. He hit it with
his face which was uncovered.
Speaker 9 (02:50:59):
Yes, well he had a hat on it, but not
the same. Yeah. I hope for the best for him.
That was awful to see and glad he is. So,
what was it twenty stitches he ended up getting.
Speaker 13 (02:51:12):
I didn't see the number. That's the most WEX responsive.
I don't want to say, yeah, I think so. I
didn't see the number.
Speaker 12 (02:51:18):
No, I think that Todd Kallis actually said that during
the broadcast of yesterday's game. That's why I bring up
the number twenty. I didn't see the number. He had
a bunch of stitches.
Speaker 13 (02:51:28):
I mean, I'm already aware the cut was pretty pretty,
pretty nasty.
Speaker 12 (02:51:32):
I didn't see the number. I just I don't know
if there's ever been a more wex response to something.
Speaker 9 (02:51:38):
You offered a number. I think it was twenty stitches,
wasn't it. I didn't see the number.
Speaker 7 (02:51:41):
It was a lot.
Speaker 9 (02:51:43):
The guy's face was gashed.
Speaker 13 (02:51:45):
He's fine, now, yeah, after the twenty stitches or whatever number.
Speaker 9 (02:51:51):
Gosh, all right, So you and I have.
Speaker 12 (02:51:53):
Talked about the the Texans first week opponent A little
bit on the air, definitely a lot off the air.
First of all, Matthew Stafford will play and start. Well,
what did you think he was going to do coming
in the second quarter start after his one quarter suspension.
He's not Arian Foster. He will play. Remember that you're
(02:52:15):
not playing the first quarter or was it the first half?
And then he had like a ninety eight yard touchdown
run or something stupid.
Speaker 13 (02:52:20):
And punch a guy in a previous game before transferring
to the Houston Texans, and the new team forgot he
had punched a guy in the last game and they
didn't realize he'd be suspended for the first half of
the next game. Oh, that's a totally different hypothetical story
with you of hn LSU.
Speaker 9 (02:52:33):
My bad, you're got a roll of this segment.
Speaker 13 (02:52:36):
Matt Stafford is going to be out there. DeVante Adams
is going to be out there. Asked Emiko Ryans about
his familiarity with them. He coached in San Francisco when
Sean McVay was there running his offense, and obviously Matt
Stafford was there as his quarterback. He's very familiar with him.
They had a joint practice against them this past year.
His offensive coordinator has worked against their defense and practiced
(02:52:59):
quite a bit. Obviously, run to a certain extent, not
at the play caller, but Sean mcvay's offense Nick Keyley.
The amount of data familiarity with them is immense, and
so the phrasing of my question to Dimiko is, well,
what would you do with all that information?
Speaker 9 (02:53:15):
He said nothing.
Speaker 13 (02:53:17):
He went on to give his reasons why, but he's
basically saying they didn't play their guys during the preseason.
We don't know what they look like with DeVante Adams.
He didn't have to say it, but he obviously he's
also noting Matt Stafford wasn't out there at all, so
he doesn't try. What he was explaining is I'm not
trying to look back at game after game after game
of game film. I've seen this and they've done that.
(02:53:38):
They clearly do all that's part of any team they
would play. It was treating it more like any game
they would play, rather than I've got all this data.
It's not quite like a division opponent that may or
may not have made changes. And this year in the
Texans Division, that's almost throw out the window kind of stuff.
You're gonna face Nashville with cam Ward, You're gonna face
Indianapolis with Daniel Jones, and you're gonna face Jacksonville. And
(02:54:00):
we heard from Demetrius Harvey from Jacksonville dot Com earlier.
We already knew this. But they've got a new head coach,
he brought in new coordinators. They're not a whole lot there.
He wants his guys to play fast, and that was
his bottom line explanation for it. Just go out there
and do what we do, play our kind of football.
I don't want to get bogged down with all that stuff.
(02:54:21):
I want our guys to go out there and play
fast and playing fast, being literal with their defense. Hunter
al share, Christian Harris, will Anderson Junior on the edges
and on the front against probably one of the four
slowest quarterbacks in the NFL. Probably good recognition of when
(02:54:42):
he needs to move his drub.
Speaker 9 (02:54:43):
Thinks he's a statue.
Speaker 13 (02:54:45):
Drew Bledsoe is not active. I don't know who else
would be. Aaron Rodgers is probably slower, but I think
Matt Stafford has the possibility per snap taken to lead
the NFL in few yards gained on the ground by
a quarterback this season, I think, so I think Aaron
(02:55:05):
Rodgers will just push past him. There's a few other
we don't like to run very often quarterbacks. Jared Goff's
actually one of them, but he can he can move.
He just doesn't in the framework of their previous offense.
But for the for the most part, I think the
matchup is great for that they're gonna I think they're
gonna just want to get rid of the ball fast,
and you're gonna have Pook over the middle, and you're
(02:55:25):
gonna have Davante on some of the shorter routes, and
you're gonna utilize your tight end. And that's kind of
what I forecast in their attempt to keep the Texans
out of Matt Stafford's face. The other way to do that,
they will do a lot run the football Texans probably
employ the very same plan.
Speaker 9 (02:55:44):
Football at five is next.
Speaker 13 (02:55:45):
That's where we start the Texans offensive plan against the Rams.
Speaker 7 (02:55:51):
The ad on Sports Talk seven ninety Adam Clinton and
Adam Wexler.
Speaker 15 (02:56:01):
The a team.
Speaker 12 (02:56:11):
Football at five on a Wednesday before opening week in
the NFL. Tomorrow night we have a game, actually, let
me correct that, tomorrow night, the Dallas Cowboys fall to
h to one.
Speaker 13 (02:56:24):
That's fast, fast, with the odd oddsmakers believe will happen well,
they are.
Speaker 12 (02:56:27):
Playing the defending champs, and they're not as good as
they were a few days ago when they traded away
their best defensive player.
Speaker 9 (02:56:33):
Those are two things not in their favor.
Speaker 12 (02:56:35):
So but as it pertains to these parts, Houston, Texas,
the Tech Suns headed to Los Angeles, taking on the
Rams and taking on that McVeigh offense, taking on everything
that that defense is going to have to. Honestly, I
(02:56:55):
know we're We've talked about the offensive line all offseason
and c J.
Speaker 9 (02:56:58):
Stroud and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 12 (02:57:00):
I feel like there's almost more pressure on the defense
this week, just to give him a chance considering what
he'll be facing from their defense.
Speaker 9 (02:57:08):
Does that make sense.
Speaker 13 (02:57:09):
There's more pressure on the Texans defense because.
Speaker 12 (02:57:12):
They've been highly talented, because they are the arch Manning
Just kidding, but they have had an arch Manning like
offseason of hype going into this game.
Speaker 13 (02:57:21):
Right, arch Manning had an offseason of based on you
hardly played at all, and we're just gonna say stuff
because it'll make us have something to talk about. The
Texans created hype by going out there and being one
of the best defenses in the NFL last year, if
not for their very substandard play in the red zone.
That would have been, without question, probably one of the
top three defenses in the NFL season ago, and that
(02:57:42):
is absolutely an area of major concern this year. They
have to make sure that that is not a repeat performance.
If you allow teams in the red zone, if you're
this talented, this capable, that good upfront and that capable
on the back end with your two corners, you got
to keep teams off the board. You got to force
a lot more fieldal so you got to be better
in the red zone. It is as simple as I'm
(02:58:02):
saying it, and we've got to figure out a way.
Maybe there's a little bit something different they can do
with their play calling, with their personnel that they utilize
out there. Maybe the addition of Sheldon Rankles Rankins helps
in some regard, the addition of CJ. Gardner Johnson helps
in some regard, But overall, the health of the team
will go a long way towards making sure they can
make improvements. But they do realize as strong as they
were last year, as great as they were from taking
(02:58:25):
the football away perspective, there's major room for improvement. Odds
makers have as of today, and I'm sure it'll be
changing on a regular basis.
Speaker 9 (02:58:33):
It's a field goal game.
Speaker 13 (02:58:35):
Rams are at home, they're favored by a field goal,
roughly a pick them. If this were on our neutral
site over under it forty three and a half probably
doesn't change a whole lot. I don't think weather's going
to impact this game in any way, and the healths
of these true respective teams. Nothing going into the game
is of consequence that we're waiting on to find out
come kickoff time.
Speaker 9 (02:58:54):
You mentioned the McVeigh offense.
Speaker 13 (02:58:55):
Demiko Ryans, who has faced the McVeigh offense as a
Niner and as a Texan and many times over some
familiar familiarity with it, but already said that's not really
important to him earlier this week when I asked him
about that on Monday. But still some thoughts about what
it is you need to do to try to combat
(02:59:15):
a Sean McVay offense. This is a tree here in Houston.
They're pretty familiar with a Shanahan tree, a Kubiak tree.
It's very, very similar. He also has someone from that camp,
so to speak, in his own building now with Nick
Kyley Bitterer's Demiko on the defending that offense.
Speaker 42 (02:59:34):
And we're gonna do what we do. That's that doesn't change.
It's how well do we do what we do. It's
about the Texans playing well.
Speaker 9 (02:59:43):
That's what this game is about.
Speaker 42 (02:59:44):
The Rams.
Speaker 9 (02:59:45):
They can do whatever they want to do.
Speaker 42 (02:59:47):
They have a lot of different looks, a lot of
different motions, a lot of different play actions off of
their runs. It's it'll all marry up and look the same.
They really do a great job of making everything look
exactly the same. For us, is just gonna be about
us just playing our brand of football. Everything that we've
worked through our training camp. That's what we'll fall back to,
(03:00:07):
the training that we've had all through our training camp.
Speaker 13 (03:00:10):
That's what is okay with me saying, Okay, I heard
all that, I know all that, I thought all that.
And now Nick Cayley's offense, which will have a lot
of mcveigh's and other offenses has worked with but a
lot of McVeigh tendencies in there. So haven't the Texans
been playing against the McVeigh ish offense the last seven
(03:00:31):
weeks worth of practice?
Speaker 12 (03:00:32):
Yeah, that's the okay, So some extent, Yeah, because the
interesting part about you talking about you know, Stafford being healthy,
it being everybody's fresh on both sides, all that kind
of stuff. That is the one thing that probably hasn't
been talked about enough considering who's coming aboard this offseason
and who's going to be in charge of that side
(03:00:53):
of the football.
Speaker 13 (03:00:55):
Like if this was Week nineteen of last year's regular
season Texans against the Rams, I would one hundred percent
not even hesitate and I'd be slamming the Rams to
win that.
Speaker 12 (03:01:06):
Game because of who was the offensive coordinator, line and everything.
All of those things that would it really helps.
Speaker 13 (03:01:15):
I mean maybe that was could have been the case
there at the end of the season, but just the
bottom line, that particular part of the game, Texans offense
against the Rams defense definitely would have pushed me in
that direction. Speaking of Nick Kayley, he's running an offense
this year, he's seen the Rams defense quite a bit.
They're not going to be tremendously different than they were
a year ago, although I think they are very different
from what they were two years ago when he first
(03:01:36):
got to the Rams because of who they added last year,
multiple players into that scheme up front, but CJ. Stroud
talking about working in this new Nick Cayley offense.
Speaker 64 (03:01:47):
You know, one thing about this group I'm really proud
of is thatman their dogs, man left to right up
and down, no matter to age or the position. I
think everybody you know that we got up there, loves
to play and play really hard. The effort is there,
and yeah, I think got a great challenge. You know,
this d Lin is really good, you know, starting to reverse.
(03:02:07):
You know, he's he's he's really really good and really
strong and powerful. There's different type of rushes good in
the run game. Fifty five, ninety one zero, really all
of them are really good. So this is a great
challenge for us. And you know those guys they know
that and they're preparing, so you know, I think it's
gonna be great.
Speaker 13 (03:02:24):
Power of two things. Obviously, he was talking about his
offensive line. We'll get to his thoughts on Kaylee's offense specifically.
Next second thing is it's one of my favorite things
about football season. It's football coach speak, it's player speak,
and it's only said that way because that is literally
how they approach it. When they're watching film and when
they're prepping for games and opponents. They know some names,
(03:02:47):
they will say some names. They even are friends with
some names, but I think fifty five, ninety one and
zero are going to be a handful.
Speaker 9 (03:02:55):
I love it. I cannot get enough of that.
Speaker 13 (03:02:57):
Braden Fisk, Kobe Turner, Byron Young are the fifty five,
ninety one and zero of the rams about whom he
was speaking. He could have said eight, it's gonna be
he's got a high motor.
Speaker 9 (03:03:07):
That eight over there. You might as well just say
it's the name on the front of the jersey, not
the back.
Speaker 13 (03:03:12):
But you'll hear that from coaches who that's what they see.
It's when they It's how you watch film, It's how
you scout players, it's how you evaluate draftees. You go
to a game as a scout, you know who you
need to watch, but you don't. I need to watch thirteen,
I need to watch twenty one.
Speaker 9 (03:03:29):
You have time for names, you guy enough to do.
Speaker 13 (03:03:31):
That's what they're looking at, and that's how they, you know,
focus in on the stitue of the task at hand.
So Stroud now on Nick Cayley's offense a.
Speaker 64 (03:03:39):
Lot of different ways. Just I feel like a lot
of times the NFL, from what I've learned, is like
a lot a lot of coaches or teams try to
make like the player fit the scheme instead of the
scheme fitting the player. It's sometimes a good thing because
you get to challenge yourself to try new things. But
also I think you should come in try to have
the scheme fit the players in a way, just because
(03:04:02):
you know, like you're really there's some certain guys are
really good at X, Y and Z, not good at A,
B and C. And I think like there's a balance
you need to have to like challenge yourself to try
new things, but also doing things that you know you're
already naturally good at. So this this offense does a
good job at to add of like or doing things
that guys are actually good at, but also challenging to
try new things.
Speaker 13 (03:04:23):
So a lot of different ways to take that, and
that's definitely one of them. So if he's speaking on himself,
I would take that as an unbelievable positive. If he's
kind of saying, well, last two years, I've been doing
things that I'm not that great.
Speaker 9 (03:04:39):
At, and look how good I was.
Speaker 13 (03:04:40):
Look how good we were at times before the offensive
line fell apart. The other part is is the way
you know he can talk about it in any way
you want, but it's impossible to hide with a younger player.
He's only been in the league three years. He hasn't
played any games for any other NFL team. He hasn't
played any games without Bobby Slok as his offensive gordon.
Every single game he's ever played since leaving Ohio State,
(03:05:03):
Bobby Slok was his play caller, was his OC. Anything
he says about in my past or in the history
or people I've worked with, and again he could be
obviously talking about Ryan Day and his staff at OKLA
at Ohio State obviously, but at the NFL level, anything
you say where this is better now than it was.
He's saying that we've improved in his mind on offense
(03:05:23):
strictly for this simple reason.
Speaker 12 (03:05:25):
By the way, did he make any comments about the
Ohio State Texas game that I missed.
Speaker 9 (03:05:29):
I don't know if he did. Today.
Speaker 13 (03:05:30):
He was like everybody else that has their allegiances.
Speaker 9 (03:05:33):
He was pretty firm.
Speaker 13 (03:05:33):
He went on a big media tour because of one
of the sponsors that he's with in the NFL the
last week, so concurrently with the lead up to the game,
he said, yeah, I think we got it. You know,
he'd liked their quarterback and like what they're doing. He
had been around the team a little bit in the
early spring. But whatever he said, he was right, And
they said they don't make mannings like they used to.
(03:05:54):
He had nothing negative to say about arch in anything
I've ever heard him say, both before or.
Speaker 9 (03:05:59):
After the game. That's what I would have said.
Speaker 13 (03:06:00):
I I mean, take a trip inside the Texans locker room.
When will this stuff normally play best? It'll play great
when Nico collins Michigan team plays CJ. Stroud's Ohio State
team like they do every year, does it really matter what?
Speaker 9 (03:06:15):
Ohio love each other?
Speaker 13 (03:06:16):
Right, it's even better because of who they are, and
you know what part of the team's the role they
play on this particular team. But when CJ goes into
the locker room and it's a pretty decent walk from
the front end to where his locker is, I mean,
where is he stopping to say, Ha, we got you, man,
we beat you. Oh wait, there's nobody in this locker
(03:06:37):
room from Texas, So I don't really have anybody to
talk to. I mean, I don't want to now today
and I think Monday it changed when they signed Silas
Bolden oh to the practice squad, and he was out
on the practice field today wearing number eighty two with
no name on the back. But he also in Silas's case,
he probably wouldn't be doing it specifically for that reason.
(03:07:00):
He knows Silas from Rancho Cucamonga. He's a former high
school teammate. He was a former youth football teammate, so
I'm sure he's super excited to have him here. The
two got together when the team's met in the preseason
because he was with the Vikings all camps, big time
speedster and potential for him to maybe make his way
on to the roster at some point, but they already
have seven on the active roster at that spot. Jo
(03:07:21):
Aspota addressed the sitch from last night between Fromber and say, Sar,
we'll hear from him.
Speaker 22 (03:07:28):
Next the eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 12 (03:07:45):
He is the eighteen Sports Talk seven ninety Space City
Home Network and.
Speaker 9 (03:07:50):
Joe spot has got a lot in his hands.
Speaker 13 (03:07:51):
Lately, a lot to deal with over the course of
a season where a lot of players have missed time,
where they have had to juggle the roster. Both the
twenty six man now twenty eight forty man roster and
everything else that goes along with dominating this division once again.
By the way, they now lead the Rangers by five games.
I'm not gonna give you the final score of the
Rangers diamondback game, but I will tell you something important.
(03:08:13):
For the thirteenth time this season, the Rangers didn't score
any runs in a game at the major league baseball level.
You make of that what you will decide, whether how
you think they fared today, but I already told you
how they fared. They added a half game to their
lead on the Rangers. They'll see if they can do
the same, if not more, with their own work tonight
against the Yankees and Will Warren and obviously if the
Mariners continue to play very, very very bad baseball when
(03:08:36):
they're not at their home ballpark, and they're not at
their home ballpark tonight, heck, they're not even in a
major league ballpark tonight.
Speaker 9 (03:08:42):
They're playing the Rays.
Speaker 13 (03:08:43):
But Joe Spotta did, of course, meet with the media
earlier today, just a little while ago. Matt Thomas will
have the Astros on Deck show from Dyke and Park
coming up in a little less than an hour. So
all of what I think, all of what Joe Spotta
had to say you will get to hear then, but
most specifically what he opened with quite oddo was, without
being asked, a statement of how he feels things now
(03:09:05):
sit regarding the situation between from ber Valdez Saysar Salajar
cross up gate, if you will, the slam that was allowed,
the non step off that didn't happen, and obviously the
pitch that was not caught that caught Salazar right in
the chest.
Speaker 9 (03:09:22):
And we've heard from both of them, We've heard from.
Speaker 13 (03:09:25):
Some others outside of the organization and outside of the
clubhouse and Dana Brown from earlier today, but now let's
hear from Joe Aspata on the situation.
Speaker 30 (03:09:33):
So yesterday, I obviously met with Salasar and Valdez once
I finished talking to you postgame, and I really wanted
to get down to number one was the asking him
to step off. I want to know about the top process,
what you know, whitch pitch, who was calling which pitch
and what.
Speaker 9 (03:09:53):
And I wanted to hear from both of them.
Speaker 30 (03:09:54):
At the same time, I wanted to have a conversation
face to face because I wanted to hear the truth
about the whole entire thing that happened in that ending.
Speaker 9 (03:10:04):
I have a lot of respect for both players, and
I truly.
Speaker 30 (03:10:08):
Believe that when they when we had these conversations, that
they're honest, and I want them to tell me the truth,
and I want them to tell you guys the truth
once they, you know, talk to the media. So I
don't want to get into specifics, but I do want
to say that.
Speaker 9 (03:10:26):
I want to put this behind us.
Speaker 30 (03:10:28):
There's a lot of speculations and stuff that's been sent
on media which I don't read, but they make me,
you know, people tell me what's going on, and I
don't like it. A lot of a lot of that
stuff is not true, but I understand the environment and
the what comes with it, right, So I appreciate it
(03:10:49):
WITHAK and just get past this and go back to,
you know, baseball.
Speaker 9 (03:10:53):
So it's been resolved, satisfactory in your mind, you.
Speaker 12 (03:10:57):
Know, it sounds like to me, it sounds like he's
trying to politely say I don't like what's being set
out there right now, but there is zero percent I
can say to convince people otherwise because of how it looked.
Speaker 13 (03:11:10):
So he talked about what he's heard from others who've
told him what's being said in the media and things
that are out there that are not true. So after
that follow up, you heard from Jason Bristol about so
if you're satisfied it's finished, he said one hundred percent.
The next follow up was, so what out there is
not true?
Speaker 30 (03:11:27):
You know, I just there's a lot of stuff that
was said that I'm not going to go into specifics,
but there's a lot of stuff that I was told
and that happened, and they're natural.
Speaker 9 (03:11:37):
But he did not divulge what exactly that is. Is
he not wanting to say it because he doesn't want
to repeat it.
Speaker 13 (03:11:44):
I think he's not wanting to say it because he
said in his initial comment, we've played for you. I
want them to be honest with the media. I want
them to be honest with what happened. He also indicated
I believe when I met with them, and when I
meet with anybody, they're going to be honest with me. Well,
if what he was told by them and what we
were told by them weren't the same thing, like I
(03:12:07):
would just.
Speaker 12 (03:12:08):
Like Joe Aspota to be playing catcher for one night
and be in the same situation as says Oar salaz
Are and then go in front of the media and
say he didn't mean it. There's no way people are
saying things that aren't true, like you know what I mean,
like I don't. That's why I think he's saying the
way I translated it. I can see why people are
saying this stuff, even though I don't like it.
Speaker 27 (03:12:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (03:12:30):
Now many other players not involved with the Astros in
any way, but just X major leaguers. You know, Chris
Young was from Houston. He was on set with MOB
Network this morning. You mentioned Eric Hosmer who's on Social.
Dallas Braden, who does a's broadcast work. Will Middlebrooks was on.
A former Red Sox player was on CBS Sports earlier today.
(03:12:53):
Joe Madden, former manager, was on with Brian Kenney on
Mob Network, and in their own way, without all repeating
the exact same words, they all had the same opinion.
We have not seen anything like this before. This is
a They all believed it was intentional and that you
just can't do that and it can't happen.
Speaker 9 (03:13:13):
You have to pay attention to that. If you're Joe Aspada.
Speaker 12 (03:13:16):
Now he's saying everything he's supposed to say as the
manager of the team that this happened on. But there's
no way he doesn't hear all that and thinking, Okay, geez,
that's some of these guys are contemporary. Some of these
guys I played with or I've been around or what
have you, and they I guess he didn't play. But
they if they're saying this, if there's this many well respected,
(03:13:37):
like if this were like some I don't know fill
in the blank, is somebody that nobody respects their opinion.
But those guys you list, they've got pretty good standing.
Speaker 13 (03:13:46):
Now, I will acknowledge one other thing about all every
single person that I mentioned, none of them pitch. They're
not pictures. Yeah, and they're also not catchers.
Speaker 9 (03:13:56):
Well let's ask a picture.
Speaker 29 (03:13:58):
So.
Speaker 13 (03:13:58):
Brian Bogasvik was on as he usually is every Wednesday
on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Obviously he works
on Space City Home Network, but he joins us every
week here on the station as the analyst Theory, usually
alongside Esh, but often alongside whoever might be in that chair.
He shared his opinion and remember he pitched and hit
was the astros brought in into the majors. He was
(03:14:20):
two lane, two way prospects, so he's plenty of time
on the mound. This was what he had to say
earlier today.
Speaker 65 (03:14:27):
Yeah, I mean the optics of it were about as
bad as can be. And if it were a cross
up or whatever, it's a hell of a coincidence and
when it happened. But you know, whatever happened between Fromber
and Cesso, stalas are they can work that out. I've
seen worse things happen in clubhouses that guys work through
(03:14:47):
and get over.
Speaker 12 (03:14:48):
And you know, we can get through stuff like that.
Speaker 65 (03:14:52):
I think the bigger issue for the team, the bigger
issues for Fromber, you know, this year and moving forward
and other teams looking at it is one again for
you know how many times here in the last six
eight weeks, you've got a guy in the mount who
is good enough to be a cy young candidate, a
guy who is good enough to carry a team to
the playoffs and carry them deep into the playoffs, standing
(03:15:14):
out of the mound in a huge game and he's
fighting multiple battles. I mean, it's hard enough to go
out there and you're facing the Yankees, it's the hottest
team in baseball, and you're frustrated by the rapport with
the catcher, and we've seen him be frustrated with defensive alignments,
and we've seen him be frustrated with plays being not
made behind him. And you know, your focus has to
be one hundred percent on I need to get the
(03:15:35):
guy out who's standing in the batter's box. And when
you're swimming in your head and there's all kinds of
other things going on, it's distracting and you're not going
to get your best performance. And it's a team that
needs Fromber's best performance to get them to the playoffs
and to you know, have any shot of going anywhere
in the playoffs, and they've consistently not gotten it. Not
(03:15:56):
because he's not capable of it, but because, I mean,
it seems distracted.
Speaker 9 (03:16:00):
Fighting in a lot of battles.
Speaker 13 (03:16:02):
I think he's right in each of those starts, and
he did get to the baseball side of it. He
mentioned the optics were very bad on the situation, and
that is very clear, and the cameras on everything, and
Frommer's reaction, even Anthony Volpie's reaction, he was the batter
in the batter's box at the time and clearly Saysar's reaction.
But the baseball part of it, which Boge was talking
about in the back half of that comment. Six starts,
(03:16:24):
the last six starts, and this includes seven innings of
shutout baseball in an Astros win earlier on this homestand
his last six starts, which include that they've lost all
five of the others, and his totally are even with
that seven nothing, seven innings, nothing given up. His are
six thirty seven, six runs, four runs, four runs, seven runs,
(03:16:45):
six runs. This is a guy, as he said accurately,
could be in the running for Cy Young any time
he takes the ball any season. He's had the ball
for the Astros as a full time opening day caliber starter,
and yet in the final month and now chain of
the season, he's almost giving them no chance to win.
Five of the six starts they've essentially had no chance
(03:17:08):
to win. Granted, their own run totals have also given
them no chance to win, but his pitching has been poor.
Speaker 12 (03:17:15):
No, it's not, I mean, it's not where you want
it to be, especially this time of year as the
calendars flip to September. But because the calendar has flipped
to September, you've got enough time between now and the
postseason provided he keeps performing in the good way to
turn things around. I mean, Hunter Brown went through a
stretch about a month and a half ago. Everybody goes
(03:17:36):
through stretches, but nobody did this right. And I was
going to bring that very thing up.
Speaker 13 (03:17:40):
So we will when we get to in case you
missed it, We'll also get to all the items in
in case you missed it as we continue here on
the eighteen.
Speaker 8 (03:17:49):
The eighteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 13 (03:17:56):
Undoubtedly, even in our finest efforts, and I think the
first fourteenth segments of the show have been our finest efforts,
we will inevitably not address certain topics enough. And I
don't even think we've talked about from ber versus seysar enough,
even though we talked about them a lot, or we've.
Speaker 9 (03:18:14):
Omitted things in their entirety.
Speaker 13 (03:18:16):
Thus we have in case you missed it, and don't
forget coming up in the final segment of the show,
tickets a pair of tickets to go see the Cougars
and the Colorado Buffalo's next Friday Night over at TDCU Stadium,
the conference opener in the Big twelve. It's also Hispanic
Heritage to Night. Got a pair of tickets to give
away for that and also a pair of tickets to
give away to Never Ending Nineties with Ezra ray Hartz,
(03:18:38):
who also have members of Sugar Ay Tonic and Better
than Ezra performing. They're going off at Smart Financial Center
and that's on December thirteenth, on the final segment of
the show. Because you've been listening to the program, specifically
this hour, maybe even specifically this segment, you'll know the
answer to the question we will oppose to you in
the final segment of the show for you to call
in and win those tickets.
Speaker 9 (03:18:57):
What do we have today?
Speaker 29 (03:18:58):
And in case you missed it, well, you did want
to continue your conversation on what was going on, So
I lets you start off.
Speaker 9 (03:19:04):
With in case you missing today.
Speaker 13 (03:19:06):
Yeah, I already tease something I was gonna have at
the start of this, and inevitably I.
Speaker 9 (03:19:10):
Forgot what that was. What you had, Uh, hold on,
I know this.
Speaker 6 (03:19:17):
Now.
Speaker 12 (03:19:17):
I don't know that's a U move, that's all all
the time, but I have add that's my excuse.
Speaker 13 (03:19:21):
So we're gonna open up in case you missed it
with a little bit of follow up. Oh Hunter Brown,
So yeah, you mentioned Hunter Brown had a spot like
it was like three starts or something like. Fromber did
so from the eighth to the twentieth of July six runs,
four runs, three runs. He lasted only four innings in
one of those starts, and we're like, well, he's late
(03:19:43):
in the season, it's only a second full season.
Speaker 9 (03:19:45):
Has is it going through? It is he gassed?
Speaker 13 (03:19:48):
Is this what we have the rest of the way?
And then then the next seven starts that he got
the ball. Uh, he's produced a one sixty nine er. Yeah,
he's been unworthy, fantastic stick in this last month. Even
though he had these six runs allowed to Colorado, four
of them were unearned, but he definitely could have pitched
more effectively. Seven games, eight earned runs allowed. That sounds
(03:20:12):
awesome until I tell you this. In those seven starts,
the Astros are two and five.
Speaker 9 (03:20:19):
That's very Paul skeins of him.
Speaker 13 (03:20:21):
Last seven starts for Hunter Astros are two and five.
Last seven starts for Fromer Astros are one and six,
and they're still on top of the division.
Speaker 9 (03:20:32):
By three games. I don't know who this says more
about in a bad way than or the Mariners.
Speaker 13 (03:20:38):
Well, like I said, I think everybody can enjoy this
while it lasts from a Seattle perspective, and it will
last for as long as they are on the road.
And their road trip is rapidly coming to a close.
They have another one and it will take them through
Houston when they get.
Speaker 12 (03:20:54):
There, and that's when they'll finally be finished off like the.
Speaker 9 (03:20:57):
Dogs they are.
Speaker 13 (03:20:57):
They finished up with Tampa to day. They're going off
right now starting their game. Then they go to Atlanta
for three and I know Atlanta stinks, but they've played
two non playoff teams on this road trip so far
and they're one and four, and that's what they are
on the road.
Speaker 9 (03:21:12):
They are stinking, by the way, Can I tell you?
Speaker 12 (03:21:14):
Since they're on the road and they're you know, everything,
this graphic that they've got right now on MLB Network
is just pathetic.
Speaker 36 (03:21:21):
What is it?
Speaker 9 (03:21:21):
It's chasing Mantle. Are you ready for me to clarify?
Speaker 13 (03:21:27):
Is this is cal Raley is chasing Mickey Mantos switch
hit home records by a switch hitter in a season.
He's freeshy of tying the record at fifty four.
Speaker 9 (03:21:37):
Make cares it? I mean, I knew what you.
Speaker 13 (03:21:40):
Were talking about immediately when you said it. You might
have wondered well, sure, it's right there on the screen.
I actually couldn't see it. I'm not tall and it's
at the very bottom of the bottom line and it's stupid,
so I actually couldn't see it, but I knew.
Speaker 9 (03:21:49):
What they were talking about.
Speaker 13 (03:21:51):
I can't wait for all the pomp and circumstance when
he hits home run number fifty five and breaks this
hallowed record. Do you think Roger Marris's family will come
out there to celebrate another record of hit? Is that
everyone thinks his mantals he has nothing to do with it.
I just thought it was funny the way they handled
it the last time. It's just like a real more
important record most home runs. Everybody a switch hitter, I
(03:22:12):
don't know, probably doesn't carry a whole lot of weight.
Speaker 9 (03:22:14):
Like his MVP is going to not to carry weight.
Speaker 13 (03:22:17):
I thought he was in the race for almost the
entire season. I think his last month and change has
taken him right back out of the race. He's hit
a bunch of homer still, so he Judge.
Speaker 9 (03:22:26):
Is gonna win it now again. Judge is gonna win it.
Speaker 12 (03:22:28):
Yes, great, but awesome, another hollow regular season awards for
him to put on the Mantle, next to nothing that matters.
Speaker 13 (03:22:35):
So Schwarber, Otani, Raleigh judge, those are the four likeliest
candidates to land the MVPs of their respective league. If
one of those four wins it on or two of
those four win it would you be okay making a
wager that none of them will win the World Series.
Speaker 12 (03:22:52):
Yes, no Dodgers, no sar winning the World Series because
their best pitchers out.
Speaker 9 (03:22:56):
Okay.
Speaker 12 (03:22:58):
The Mariners aren't winning the World Series because they're the Mariners.
The Yankees aren't winning the World Series because they got
as close as they're ever going to get for the
next ten years or so last season and they didn't
cover first.
Speaker 9 (03:23:12):
And he's not even pitching this year. So who's at leave?
Speaker 12 (03:23:15):
Oh, the Dodgers who buy their championships on credit. Congrats,
Dodger fan, you still suck too.
Speaker 9 (03:23:21):
All right, football, what else do we have?
Speaker 29 (03:23:23):
Let's go back to the press conference with Tamiko Ryans
and CJ. Stroud. We talked a lot about what Jared
Vers could do to alter this game and lead to
a victory out in Los Angeles for the home team.
Speaker 9 (03:23:33):
But there's another name.
Speaker 29 (03:23:34):
He's also playing for the first time this season. Like
everyone else, but there was rumors that maybe he wouldn't
be back, and that is Matthew Stafford. Both CJ. Stroud
and Demiko Ryans were asked about, Hey, what's it like
to go up against a quarterback like Matthew Stafford?
Speaker 9 (03:23:49):
And well, you said growing up this was.
Speaker 29 (03:23:51):
Your favorite quarterback, So what's it like to potentially go
ahead and beat him?
Speaker 42 (03:23:55):
Stafford's had done it exceptionally well for a long time.
You gotta do to confuse him from the defensive coaching perspective.
Speaker 15 (03:24:03):
He's seen it all.
Speaker 42 (03:24:04):
He's played against every type of coverage you want to run.
Speaker 11 (03:24:07):
He's done it.
Speaker 42 (03:24:08):
He's been successful, So not trying to not trying to
surprise him or fool him, like we just we gotta
be supposed to be.
Speaker 9 (03:24:16):
And his play sound.
Speaker 64 (03:24:17):
I like his game, yeah, I mean he does a
good job of anticipation. No, the throws moving guys with
his eyes, coverage recognition he did. I can't give with
the ball in the spot any time for any arm angle.
Speaker 13 (03:24:34):
He does a good job of that.
Speaker 64 (03:24:35):
Hockets is something I watched too, like, so yeah, he
does a lot of great gams and yeah, he's a
really good player.
Speaker 9 (03:24:41):
And remember that CJ.
Speaker 29 (03:24:43):
Stroud on multiple occasions, has said the quarterback he watches
the most and emulates his game.
Speaker 9 (03:24:48):
After is not justin Herbert. He is not justin Herbert,
if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 13 (03:24:52):
I think at some point last offseason, when he was
doing a podcast work with Packers linebacker Micah Parsons, he
had brought Matt Stafford up, and he's talked about him
with us also, and I think that might have been
the first time we heard of the extreme admiration that
he has for Stafford years fourteen through seventeen.
Speaker 9 (03:25:09):
For Stafford, I have been with the Rams.
Speaker 13 (03:25:11):
This will be year eighteen and he will have played
the Texans five times over that stretch. But the first
thirteen years with Detroit were obviously very good.
Speaker 9 (03:25:18):
They didn't bring a.
Speaker 13 (03:25:19):
Whole lot of postseason success, but he had a pretty
good career going already. I don't think anyone would debate
this statement. He's been a better quarterback, a more successful quarterback,
a better thrower of the football, and a better operator
of the offense in years fourteen through seventy at age seventeen,
thirty three through thirty six, since joining the Rams and
playing with that team, those players in Sean McVay.
Speaker 29 (03:25:41):
Obvious the one MVP Calibar year he had in Detroit.
Speaker 13 (03:25:44):
Yes, what was his rookie year again when he was
Comeback Player of the Year like one hundred years ago.
Speaker 9 (03:25:48):
Yeah, what was twenty thirteen? Twenty four tens?
Speaker 13 (03:25:50):
Twenty eleven, he had forty one touchdowns and sixteen interceptions.
He's replicated that forty one touchdown season in his first
year with the Rams. So yes, I'm not trying to
dismissed all of his years in Detroit, but overall, his
four years in LA have been significantly more successful as
a quarterback. Last year, in fact, lowest interception percentage of
his entire career.
Speaker 9 (03:26:11):
I remember he got the thing, you know, that Super
Bowl thing.
Speaker 12 (03:26:14):
So I went to Super Bowl with so when the
Texans played there on Thanksgiving Day and what's his face?
His knee was down even though they let the touchdown
go and Dominican Sue was stomping on Matt Shaw.
Speaker 9 (03:26:24):
And I know it was Matt Stafford that day. That
was twenty twelve.
Speaker 13 (03:26:29):
He's played in all of their games. I just don't
remember him being their quarterbacks straight years without missing a game.
Speaker 9 (03:26:36):
That bothers me. I'm gonna look that up there you
have it.
Speaker 13 (03:26:38):
In case you missed it, we'll give away tickets to
see the Cougars and Never Ending Nineties and the final
segment of the show that is next.
Speaker 22 (03:26:46):
The eight on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 9 (03:26:54):
By the way, the Rangers score was too nothing. Not
the Rangers.
Speaker 13 (03:26:58):
Yes, are relatively unimportant. If I just tell you that
one of the two teams didn't score, it should pretty
much tell you who won the game, not them.
Speaker 9 (03:27:06):
Are you gonna score today Rangers? No, and they didn't.
That is correct?
Speaker 46 (03:27:11):
Mm the.
Speaker 12 (03:27:14):
Is this the finale of the series in the Yankees
Minor League Stadium between the Rays and the Mariners?
Speaker 9 (03:27:20):
Today?
Speaker 13 (03:27:20):
It is six thirty five, first pitch for them?
Speaker 9 (03:27:23):
And who's their starter? Today?
Speaker 13 (03:27:25):
Today the Mariners are sending George Kirby to the bump
former Astros prospect Adrian Houser going for Tampa.
Speaker 12 (03:27:31):
Yeah, Kirby's gonna get shelled. Just kidding. They almost blew
it last night. I was watching that gise, so let
me take you through whenever the Grand Slam was hit.
I actually missed all the fireworks.
Speaker 9 (03:27:44):
Do you know why? I don't know why? Come on,
this is me. There are down six nothing after a
Grand Slam. What did I do?
Speaker 13 (03:27:52):
Turned the game on louder, watched it more closely.
Speaker 9 (03:27:55):
Strike one, Strike two. I'll give you one more game.
Speaker 13 (03:27:58):
Close the door, turned the lit stared at the screen
harder than you've ever.
Speaker 9 (03:28:03):
Hear shared at a screen before.
Speaker 13 (03:28:04):
Now I was fired up your computer and put it
on a second screen and watched the Yankees broadcast and
brought up the Yankees radio broadcast. I don't know are
any of these right?
Speaker 12 (03:28:14):
They couldn't be further from the correct, guess. I was
actually watching it on my phone.
Speaker 13 (03:28:18):
Time, searching for where can I hear Aaron Boone's postgame presser.
Speaker 9 (03:28:22):
I don't know what else did you do? Aaron Boone?
He probably thought they lost. It's right here in front
of us.
Speaker 35 (03:28:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (03:28:30):
I could not shut that bleep off soon enough.
Speaker 9 (03:28:33):
So what's the answer to the.
Speaker 13 (03:28:33):
Question that I won't give away so you can give
people tickets?
Speaker 12 (03:28:36):
Well, you mentioned that Hunter Brown, since having that nice
little three game swoon or whatever it was, has bounced
back nicely.
Speaker 9 (03:28:43):
I did, and he gave out a specific era of
his well one which was very nice. It was it
was are you gonna get while I talk right now?
Speaker 12 (03:28:53):
Are you gonna make sure that Cole has the exact
number that the callers need to give him at seven
one three two one two five seven ninety in order
to win these tickets we're talking about.
Speaker 13 (03:29:03):

seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
(03:29:46):
ninety If you know the answer to the question that
AC mentioned last segment talked about the swoon of fromber Valdez,
which is ongoing, and the swoon of Hunter Brown, which
was quickly put down by Hunter three games spanning three
restarts and his era was not very good, and then
the last seven games, it's been awesome and very specifically
(03:30:07):
nice over those last seven games. Was what is Hunter
Brown's ra over the last seven games? As heard right
here on Sports Talk seven to ninety during in case.
Speaker 12 (03:30:16):
You missed it, A couple of things from the mean
streets of X one comes from my good buddy Steve Zaban,
who forty eight minutes ago weighed in on the whole
red zone commercials controversy that we almost came to blows
over earlier.
Speaker 9 (03:30:33):
In the show.
Speaker 12 (03:30:33):
Just kidding, We were never even that close to coming.
Speaker 13 (03:30:35):
It was more of an inside the NBA riff.
Speaker 9 (03:30:38):
Yeah, it really was. I yelled at you sorry about that.
Deserved it, so.
Speaker 12 (03:30:44):
I don't think anybody is upset about the commercials. Was
the quote that Pat McAfee gave on his show today
and Steve's Steve Zaban quote tweeted that and he says,
this reminds me of when my mom would say, come on,
you can't even taste the onions in there to me
when I was a kid. Note, I could always taste
the onions always. That's me right now. Those are the
(03:31:07):
onions in whatever. I don't want the onions in.
Speaker 13 (03:31:10):
That sounds like a scene from a very popular movie
a handful of years ago with two guys that became
step brothers and then went on a bunch of job interviews,
and one of them were interviewing with Seth Rogan and
kind of kind of made it hard to get.
Speaker 9 (03:31:24):
The chase outs. He made me go there.
Speaker 13 (03:31:28):
Corey mentioned something on the old platform, and I wanted
to get to it here because it's definitely pertinent. I'd
run through a bunch of people nationally on their own
podcast or elsewhere MLB Network that had commented on the
fromber Valdez ASR. Salazar cross up and everything that went
along with it, and noted that none of them were
pitchers or catchers. Just for the people that I had named,
(03:31:49):
and obviously wanted to hear from Brian bogus Sevic, who
was on Sports Talk seven to ninety earlier in Space
City Homework last Snace City Home Network last night and
that he has previously pitched at the these levels and
has a little bit of insight there. And Corey noted
that there are a handful of catchers who are very
easily found on social media AJ Perzinski and Eric Kratz
and that they're on foul territory and Jonathan Lucroy actually,
(03:32:13):
usually when something controversial in baseball, especially when it relates
to a catcher, will bring himself into it and we'll
talk about it, and it has a very interesting perspective
on it. But quite simply before we close up shop
here and give it over to the on Deck show,
pretty easy to relay the some of the thoughts of both.
Speaker 9 (03:32:31):
Eric and aj.
Speaker 13 (03:32:32):
Former catcher Eric is still most famously known as an
Astros catcher for intentionally winning a bet by tripping coming
out of the Astros dugout during opening of the season introductions.
But what they had to say, Eric said makes his
skin boil that this would intentionally happen with a teammate,
and his quote was I would want to punch him
(03:32:53):
in the face underneath the dugout. Aj Perzinski saying a
grown man conversation would be had if what he did
was intentional, and his quote. If I'm Salazar, I'm rifling
that son of a gun right at his knees. Salazar
took his pulled his mask up on top of his
head hockey style mask that he wears, took five six
seven steps away from home plate and towards the mound,
(03:33:16):
and did throw a strike to him, but at glove
shoulder chest level.
Speaker 9 (03:33:20):
Translate the look on his face though, like I can't believe.
I said, come on, man, I can't believe you just
did that. Yeah, I wouldn't have been as nice as
the look was. They've said, that's not what it meant.
Speaker 12 (03:33:31):
There was not intended to play that his comments at
all on the show today. I can't remember if we did.
Just to me, he's clearly covering. He's been given the
mandate from above.
Speaker 29 (03:33:43):
You know.
Speaker 9 (03:33:44):
They both got hauled into the principal's office. Heresaysar Salazar, me.
Speaker 15 (03:33:47):
And Pran were actually have a really good relationship.
Speaker 42 (03:33:50):
We talked, we've been talking for mainly for three years now,
especially to last year.
Speaker 12 (03:33:55):
We talked a lot too, and we have a really
good relationship and now we don't talk anymore.
Speaker 13 (03:34:01):
Did not say that he's not catching tonight. He's still
on the active roster. Victor Carrattini's in the lineup tonight.
He's been activated. He's playing first base and Jander Diez
is doing the catching. One more thing from Szar, indicating
where accountability and Fromber met.
Speaker 9 (03:34:16):
The heat of the moment got to He apologized after.
Speaker 64 (03:34:21):
He's a I mean, he's great, He's not any It
wasn't any, It wasn't anything bad about it as just
a press of wrong, a bombing, and I was expecting
another pitch.
Speaker 13 (03:34:29):
That is what we have discussed without hearing it directly
from Salaz there for you guys, our listeners, But that's
what his explanation was. There was a mix up specifically
because he pushed the wrong buttons on his pitchcount.
Speaker 9 (03:34:42):
Doesn't the PitchCom make this even less believable.
Speaker 13 (03:34:44):
For all this was another part of the story that's
a tough following. Both Fromber has been asked about it.
I think mat Kyle o'harat questioned him last night on
this very topic and it was brought up again today.
Like Fromber on multiple occasions in his post game said
I called for this, this is what I called for. Well,
he doesn't wear a p he doesn't call his own game. Now,
if you shake somebody off until you get what you want,
you're technically calling that pitch. But then he went back
(03:35:06):
and Frommer said, well, this is what I had in
my mind to throw here, and that's what I ended
up throwing.
Speaker 9 (03:35:10):
That's what I wanted to throw.
Speaker 13 (03:35:12):
So he's clearly acknowledging he's not throwing what the catcher's calling,
but saying you called for it is. That's a tough
follow when you're not calling the game. Josh Hater wears
a pitch con Josh Hater calls his game. There are
our pitchers that do that.
Speaker 9 (03:35:23):
He doesn't.
Speaker 12 (03:35:24):
I wouldn't want a Josh Hater bullet to the chest,
but I don't think they'd get crossed up that way either.
By the way, esakpretis headed to Florida, the next step
continues towards his return. We will have another Yankees Astros
tilt to talk about when we get back in here
till tomorrow afternoon. We are looking forward to that and
in the meantime, enjoy Astro's on deck right around the
(03:35:46):
corner
