Speaker 1 (00:04):
Now we're right back in the middle of our football
happy hour as we prepare for the Cowboys taking on
the Vikings up in Dallas Sunday night. Sunday Night Football
mentioned the you know, some of the concerns I would
say the valid concerns going into this game from a
(00:28):
Cowboys perspective, the thinking about these teams as one's a
six win team, the others a five win team. There's
not a whole lot that actually separates them when you
look at it more. But for some reason, the feelings
around both these teams. Obviously the Cowboys feel like they
(00:49):
now can see a path to the playoff Minnesota, no
chance outside of outside of the rapture taking place and
see the NFL needing an additional playoff team, not based
on record, but some of the you know, some of
what we talked about that last segment with the Brian
(01:10):
Flores blitzing the way the Vikings are going to attack
the Cowboys offense on that side of the ball, it
does open up potential one on one matchups on the
outside for the Cowboys biggest playmakers. And that's where you know,
when you when you see this Dallas offense go up
(01:31):
against a team that is blitz heavy, if they can
just give Dak two and a half seconds, he can
find that one on one matchup.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
And on the outside with Pickens and.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
CD, they've been really good, if not the best in
the league at exploiting the weaker coverage, the weaker coverage
man on one of those two guys, and on the
CD front. Great news, the best possible, best case news.
I think after watching him in that game in Detroit,
(02:05):
watching him go into the fencing position, you know, do
the two hands, and start to see like immediately because
I when he first went down, I thought, okay, that's
the shoulder again, the shoulder that kept him out of
multiple games last year. And then I saw that his
hands start to curl in that fencing technique and you
could see him trying to like open his hands to
(02:27):
regain you know.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Function, basically to regain you know, his facilities.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
And that's when I said, oh, you know, crap, that
that's a concussion. And if you're going into the fencing
position technique with your hands, that means you're not coming
back into that game. There's no chance. But my first
thought was we've seeds out for multiple weeks like this
could be you know, we we'll be lucky to get
(02:56):
him back for the Chargers matchup, but yesterday full participant
in practice. He has cleared the concussion protocol. CD will
be back, which is huge in this matchup because the
other side of that is the George Pickens experience. And
(03:17):
I know we are in a we are a live
in the moment society now. Yeah, but everything George Pickens
has done on the football field this year as a
member of the Dallas Cowboys seemingly was thrown away by
a lot of the fan base after seeing his no
show performance in Detroit last week. And not not no
(03:40):
show just in terms of stats, but we saw a
bit of the a bit of the rap sheet of
Pittsburgh Steeler George Pickens, the lackadaisical route running, the not
obviously not firing off the ball when he doesn't expect
to be involved in the play.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
He didn't make a lot of those umps at attempted
attempt to catch that you would see he has he
has most of the year.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Yeah, he looked way more passive, uh than he has
at any in any other game all season. Lost.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Strange because like as as physical as Detroit secondary is
is that they have a like they're a very short
secondary like that. That that's the thing is, like all
their corners and safeties are like six foot at the most,
maybe even like five eight five seven. I know DJ
Reid is like five to nine or something like that.
And so, yeah, like the effort if if if you're
someone who like has been paying attention from like the
DFW sphere the way I'm assuming I know Puma, you do.
(04:33):
That effort has been the one thing attached to George
Pickens the last week and change. Now going back to
that last game, but what was nice that I feel
like it was kind of swept under the rug after
a loss and with the issue with Ceedee Lamb going
out and George Pickens's not having as good a game
was Ryan Florinoy. One of the best moves that shot
(04:53):
he has made all year is and this is not
a shot, this is just a reality. Was making Jalen
Tolbert a healthy, inactive and putting Ryan Flournoy in position
to become probably their third receiver.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Yeah, which is crazy too because, uh, you know, going
back to the game where they tied the Packers, it
was Jalen Tolbert's amazing catch down the sideline. Yep, that
put him in the position to even be in overtime
in that game. And to see how quickly, uh, he
(05:27):
has fallen out of favor.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
I will say, have you watched any of the New
Hard Knocks season, I haven't any catchup I would I
would highly suggest it's it's seeing.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
The way the locker room reacts to Schottenheimer, seeing the
way he has that room, the way he has the
pulse of that room, and and uh, the obvious respect
that the team has for him, which I wouldn't have
expected necessarily. You know this soon in year one of
(06:03):
the shoddy head coach experiment. But there there is evidence
to show that.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
He is one. He is not afraid to.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Dress down or I mean, we saw it in the
granted it was only one possession, but in the suspension
in the benching of CD and Pickens in Vegas.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Uh, we've seen that Shody is not afraid.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
To dole out some discipline to anybody on this roster,
which is refreshing. But also you mentioned the Diggs comments
in the last segment, I I don't want the I
don't want the similar to Pickens where you tell you
(06:51):
it's the effort, and so we're you know, we're now
losing uh, you know, losing favor for him, Uh digs
win healthy, it's still their second best secondary player on
the roster. I think you who would you take ahead
of it? I, assuming healthy forever, assuming health, it's either
(07:15):
Deron Bland or Malie Cooker. Those are the only two
guys among the secondary group.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
I would have Deron Bland, and I'm not even sure
about that now.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
I Mean, the thing is also is like is it's
a short it's a small sample size, small sample size,
but Kalin Carson's looks really good since he's returned from injury.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah, and Shavon Ravel has potential. You know, he's gotten
burned a few times.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
But unfortunately that's also the issue that I have, and
I've made this point before even with Andy, is that like,
if you're a player who always has that moniker of
when he's healthy, you're gonna have that with you the
rest of your life. And unfortunately, uh, Trevon Diggs his
first three years, I think he missed five games total.
He's missed over twenty these last three years, including one
(07:57):
season when play two games.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Yeah, and he's still getting fine to buy the team
earlier this season for being late to rehab.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Late to rehab the rehab like.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
We know the five hundred thousand dollars contract adjustment for
not rehabbing with the team in the offseason. Now we're
still getting reports they're finding him weekly because he's late
to rehab treatment.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
And then there was a saga of him having a concussion,
just any concussion at home, which led to him going
on IR and I made the case that and a
couple months ago you actually voted for Andy and we
talked about the guys that I think are actually hurting
this team. I mean on the field. Kyrie Elam was
one of those guys. They made the right move of saying,
I know we traded for this guy, we need to
move on. It is the same thing with Wise Smith.
(08:38):
I know we used the first round pick on this guy.
We need to move on. And those were additioned by subtraction.
Trayvon Diggs unfortunately has entered this point in his career. Well,
he is no longer I think viable on the field,
at least at a quarterback position. I think if you
moved to safety he might be a little more effective.
But that's either here nor there. I think the problem
is right now, this Cowboys secondary is already even at
(08:59):
full capet, is still very much marginal. And part of
it is obviously because like they are a bunch of
man corners playing his own system. That's Ebraflus's issue. Another
part of it is also is that like a lot
of is really experienced. You're asking guys like Reddy Stewart
to be a starting nickel who's looks solid, Shaban Rebel
who's coming off of injury, he's wearn of the biggest
knee brace in the world on his leg, and then
(09:20):
you obviously have Caln Carson also return from injury. Deron
Bland has a head dealt with injuries, Malik Cooker's been
in and out of the lineup, donovand Wilson's been ending
out of the lineup.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
So, whether it's.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Schemes or injuries or whatever, it is, the secondary as is,
I don't think can really afford to add on Trevon
Diggs right now, just because it's being held with bandages
at the moment and I feel like having him on
there you mentioned last segment addition by subtraction, I think
he'd be subtraction by addition.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
See I look at the it would be one thing
if the secondary was showing signs of being anywhere close
to average. I think, still with the natural ability that
Diggs has, if if he is fully healthy, as he
told reporters he spoke to reporters for the first time
(10:09):
in a while in weeks earlier today, told reporters he's
fully healthy, he's cleared, he's good to go. It's a
coach's decision from from this point forward. And I think
all of those names you just listed, if you're telling
me I could have either Kaylin Carson and Schavanraville on
one side on the outside, I could have Deron Bland
(10:31):
back in his better position of nickel slot, and then
I could have Trayvon Diggs as the other corner on
the outside. That is better than any combination of having
Ready Stewart in the slot, Bland on one side and
Carson Revel on the other side. I just think the
I completely agree with you. Diggs is gone at the
(10:53):
end of the year. He knows that everyone in that
locker room knows that exactly that's going to happen. But
if you're telling me you need to win four games
to even have a chance at the playoffs. Having Digs
in the lineup is still increases your odds of winning
out versus having Ready Stewart in the lineup.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Let me ask you this because I know we're coming
up on a break, but just real quick, so another
guy that you and I have talked about, like maybe
maybe needs to be off there. But let's say you
can only pick one. Would you rather have Digs in
the lineup? But it also met Kenneth Murray stays at
the mike linebacker or put Logan Wilson in for all
those Kenneth Murray snaps, but Digs stays inactive.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
It's almost like you ran the or read the run sheet.
Let's I wanted to talk about because next well, it
feels like we're gonna have a bit of a changing
in snap count between Murray and Logan Wilson if you
read the tea leaves coming out of the Star up
there in Frisco. Let's get into that next, we'll do
one more segment on the Cowboys and then do a
(11:54):
little bit of an NFL Week fifteen look Sie along
the Way coming up next here on the ticket
