Speaker 1 (00:04):
A lot of times we are thrilled when we see
the Spurs on a national TV broadcast, and some are
disappointed because then that means that they play at odd times,
and you know, sometimes they may have to play earlier
late because of all of that, maybe an eight to
thirty game which really is eight to fifty before they
actually get around and tipping it off with the five
(00:27):
minutes slide and all that kind of stuff. But anyway,
every team in the NBA has been guaranteed two prime
time slots this year, two nationally televised games. The Spurs
are going to be on national TV on one partner
or another twenty two times, NBC, Peacock, ESPN, ABC Prime,
(00:48):
NBA TV, Netflix.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
They're all part of the.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Same group of teams that are going to be calling
games this year.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
I think it's.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Pretty cool that the Spurs have been out there twenty
two times, and it tells me that what a lot
of Spurs fans have believed over the years is, well,
nobody likes this because we're the Spurs, and nobody wants
to to, you know, patronize a small market team all
this kind of stuff. It shows that when you have
Victor Wiman Yama and you have Steph Castle and now
(01:19):
you have Dylan Harper. That somebody thinks that this is
going to be a pretty good team, and since they
think it's going to be a pretty good team, they
want to showcase it on TV, and that that would
mean for some compelling games in the regular season, which
all of these network providers are trying to make sure
that they can come up with.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I like you just nonchalantly just leave out swipe a
mister Dearn Fox himself.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Well, I'm I was.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
I mean, I can name the entire roster. I like
the Spurs roster. I think it's I think what the
uh you know, I was a proponent of trying to
go after Kevin Durant or Giannis. I thought that was
would have been good and then it would have been
sizzle for sure. But if you look at what the
Spurs have done, they have followed the Oklahoma City Plan
(02:05):
to a certain extent, homegrown talent, great draft choices, use
of draft capital where necessary, and except for one year,
I believe in twenty eight twenty nine is the only
time that they're going to go over the second apron
of the salary cap, unless that changes between now and
then with a trade or a player moving on. But
(02:27):
the time that by the time that Wimby gets ready
for his extension to kick in, then Deer and Fox
will have a year left. By the time that Steph
Castle he is ready for his to kick in, Deer
and Fox won't have any years left. And so they've
been very salary cap prudent. They're a little bit over
the cap, but they're not in the first couple of
years in the first apron, and not except for one
(02:48):
year will they be in the in the second apron.
And they can work around that between now and then
if they need to. They've created a really good roster.
Now the biggest question is going to be can they
stay healthy. Can Wimby stay healthy? Can Fox stay healthy?
Can all these guys stay healthy? And if they can,
I think they're going to be a very competitive team.
Whether they can win sixty games like the Thunder did
(03:10):
to be determined, But I think the Thunder are going
to come down in terms of in number of wins.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
I th they went when sixty eight last year.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
I think sixty one or sixty is the It's going
to be the high water mark because they're going to
get everybody's best effort night in a night out. I
think Denver is going to be back up there. In
Minnesota's going to be back up there. I think Dallas
is underrated. I hate to say it, but I think
the Clippers are going to be pretty decent in the
regular season too. I'm just not a fan of the
(03:37):
way James Harden plays basketball, and so it's going to
be really, really fun to watch because I think in
Houston too, let's not forget, you know, they were right
on the door of being a number one seed, just
a few games behind Oklahoma City. So this could be
a really fantastic year and years coming forward for the
Spurs with the makeup of this roster.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
I mean, I I would go on on on, not
even a limb, but I would say because a lot
of people right now are saying, oh, well, the Spurs
are doing what Oklahoma City was doing and like developing
their talent and stuff like that. No, the Spurs are
following the Spurs formula because Oklahoma City again copy of
(04:21):
that they're doing. Yes, they were Spurs light back when
Sam Presty first got there, and then you saw how
how they struggled. But Sam Presty from being here implementing
what he learned here. Over there, they are doing what
the Spurs did for so long, and again there's always
going to be a down period.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I mean, even Rome Fell.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
You know, well, it seems like that there is a
plan and that no matter what the temptation is to
do something different, they don't deviate from the plan because
they know the plan is the proper way. I could
probably think of a million different analogies to come up with,
but if you create a plan and you're confident with
the plan, you've got to be really you got to
(05:05):
be really knocked off your socks a little bit to
make a deviation in that plan. Stay the course, make
sure you're doing the things that you know are going
to make you successful. And the worst thing that you
could have is a championship team with a bunch of
max out players. In the next year, you've got a
two hundred and fifty million dollars payroll and your salary
cap handicapped, your second apron handicapped.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
You can't change your roster at all.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
You got too many guaranteed contracts and you've got, you know,
potential divas that are making a lot of money that
are veteran players that.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
You can't move.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Oh you mean you're talking about the Boston Celtics exactly, Yeah,
but I mean minus the divas.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
I don't think they really have any divas over there.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
But the Celtics not only had the jettison players off
their roster, their best one of their best players, and
Dan Tatum got hurt. And this was a sixty one
win team last year, and Vegas has them now at
forty three and a half, the same number that the
Spurs have.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yep, yep.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
So again, you know, I know it's old news, but
I harp on it a lot. I know that some
Spurs fans, well, some Spurs fans get we get enamored,
we get excited about the potential of the player of
high stature of like a Kevin Durant, a Giannis Antetokumpo,
(06:26):
and we're like, well, man, this would be the one
year where we can try to make a chance to
go after them. If the Spurs and Brian Wright had
not made the move to get one deeron Fox for
you know, uh Trey Jones and draft picks.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
And and uh Collins, Zach Collins, then I.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Would have totally been on that board of Okay, let's
try to do something they don't. They didn't need to
add even more firepower to the firepower they already have.
Like you mentioned, this is what they want to do.
Barring the you know, the unfortunateness of what with Josh Primo,
(07:07):
they kind of you know, you wipe that one.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
But we didn't know five years ago. We didn't know
five years ago when Oklahoma City traded for Shay Gildes
Alexander that he was going to turn into the best
player in the league, or at least.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
One of them. We knew he was good, but we
didn't know he was that good.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Yeah, and I remember getting on Shay when he wanted
to get paid for the All Star Game, remember that
or that that fiasco a few years ago. So, but
he understands the And who's to say that Steph Castle
or our Dylan Harper and of course Wimby can't be
another version of what Shay has become and be one
(07:42):
of the greats of the league. I think all of
them have the potential to do that. And you could
technically have three Alpha Superstars on a roster and you
wouldn't have to pay all three of them at the
same time until twenty thirty one, and then you know
who knows what the couch, the cap and the and
the dollar.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Situation is going to be by then. Yeah, all right.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Coming up next, we'll give you a BMW Championship update,
Scottie Scheffler on the Prowl chase, and Robert McIntyre and
pat Riley's getting a statue. We'll discuss all that. Coming
up shortly as well. It's the Indy Everage Show.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
On the ticket
