Speaker 1 (00:04):
Andy Ever along with audio disseminator and producer Shane Carter.
We've got three or we got actually, we have a
championship game coming up here tonight with Tulane and UH
North Texas in New Orleans kicking off in a couple
of hours. We also have three games this weekend, so
let's go over some of those. Tulane is a really
good home team and Tulane is. I mean, I'm very
(00:28):
biased in how I judged the teams that are playing
because UTSA played horribly against North Texas, and North Texas
you know, took him to the woodshed, and likewise Tulane
didn't play very well at all and gave UTSA some
bulletin board material and got whacked in the in the dome.
And so I think both teams are pretty good. I
(00:51):
think mess to makers are is going to get paid
a lot of money next year wherever he wants to go.
And if this game were in Ditton, there'd be no choice,
no way I would pick.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Too Lane to win.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
The fact that they have home field advantage gug gives
them maybe a little bit of an edge. I still
think North Texas overall it's the better team, but that's
just based on what I've seen. And I say this
all the time. I can see scores, and I can
see comparative scores. But unless you watch a team play
all the time, or unless you're a coach and you
break down film from every game that they played, I
(01:24):
think it's really hard sometimes to evaluate a team that
you don't watch very much. So I watch UTSA and
whoever they're playing, and I can tell you what utsa
strengths and weaknesses are, and what their advantages are and
are not against certain teams. And then it comes down
to the execution part. And in the six games, UTSA
lost other than well three of the six games because
(01:46):
they likely weren't going to be Texas A and M.
Even if Chekavian Rodgers gets the pick six on the
pass that was almost a lateral that wasn't a lateral. Yeah,
And UTSA takes the lead in the early third quarter
and still got plenty of time to come back from that.
And when you get beat by as badly as you
did against North Texas and South Florida, you can't say, well,
(02:07):
what if this would happened or what if that had happened.
But in the Temple game, the Army game, in the
North Texas game, it came down to a couple of
plays that didn't go your way, very similarly to the
fact that at Colorado State, if they make the two
point conversion, you likely lose that game, and you're not
in the bowl, and you're not even in the ball picture.
So I can evaluate the weaknesses and strengths of the
(02:28):
teams I see all the time, and when you watch
the NFL, I pretty much watch whatever game is on TV,
and the primetime game and the Cowboys. So but I
think you see enough highlights of the other teams that
you probably have more idea what those college teams are, like,
I mean, pro teams are than the college teams. I
do Saint North Texas is the better team. Whether they
(02:48):
win to night or not doesn't necessarily matter, and I
don't necessarily care one way or the other. I'm not
going to wake up in the morning and cry over
who wins or who loses that game. But I do
hope that whoever wins and makes that trip likely to
Austin Stadium in Oregon and plays up there, that they
at least make the Nike Boys a little bit nervous
by the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
I think that the thing is I've watched both these
teams play multiple times this point. I don't know if
you saw the North Texas game last weekend against Temple,
but that offense was flying everywhere.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
And that's the thing that that's so good. That's thing that.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Chandler Moore sayes is like, not only does he have
like really good players, but he has a really good
scheme that opens guys up down the field and across
the middle. You saw it obviously, you saw it in
first hand when they played UTSA. Yeah, the way they
spread out defenses is again, you can take that for
granted if you're someone who questions the group of five
just as a concept, but like you can't question a
scheme designs, and he have a really good scheme.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
I agree North Texas should win this game.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
I'm concerned if i'm them, like if Jake Retzlofla is
able to get get it going on the ground, because
we've seen when he gets it going on the ground,
he's hard to cover through the year.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
The comparison that I have with UTSA when they played
North Texas, I I thought at the time, other than
the first play of the game where Robert Henry ran
to the three yard line that the offense just wasn't
in sync and it was hard for the offense to
come back from double digit especially on the road, to
come back from double digit deficits, and so you know,
(04:15):
but what if they don't score it right before the
half on what was clearly I mean, you talk about
the pass interference call on Ferguson last night, there was
a block in the black back that everybody in the
stadium saw. In fact that the North Texas crowd stopped
cheering thinking there was going to be a flag and
that it was going to be called back because everybody
except the guy with the flag saw it. So but
(04:36):
you still look lost by forty. So you know, go
back and look at that, and or thirty, and you
can go back and look at that and say, well,
that one played, but that could have changed the momentum.
And maybe you don't turn it over three times to
start the half. By the same indication, how did North
Texas lose to South Florida. Well, the way that South
Florida played against UTSA, I can see that, but they
(04:57):
also turn it over four times in the third quarter
that led to four scores and took a twenty one
to twenty one game out to fifty six to twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
The game was over.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
So that that's that's the STERI I like North Texas
tonight in a close game at the end, Let's get
to Texas Tech and BYU, let's do that. BYU has
only loss is to Texas Tech that was in Lebbick.
They get a neutral site game in this win tomorrow.
I still think Texas Tech is the has the better resume.
But and I'm I don't really want to see armageddon
(05:27):
the only armageddon.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
I mean, I don't want to.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
I don't want I don't want Duke to have any
possible chance to play in the CFP. The only and
they get in if they win and and and TROYA
beats James Manna.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Yeah, that's that's, that's it, because like they would at
that point be the highest ranked divisional champion. Because after that,
you're saying, Okay, this is the winner. Kennesaws State and
Jacksonville State get over Duke, and that's probably a no.
With Boys Stay or UNLV that would be maybe just
because of records and all that. But first off, I'm
very much a proponent of chaos I think that's I
think that's gonna color sports so much more fun. But
(05:59):
in this one with Tech versus BYU, what Tech did
a really good job of is like they took away l. J.
Martin and bear Back Meyer's ability to run the ball.
They forced him to throw the ball. And as good
as bear Back Myers a quarterback, despite his gaudy quarterback number,
I can't believe you were in forty seven behind the center.
He's still a freshman quarterback and freshman quarterbacks ultimately that
if you take away one of their best attributes on
(06:19):
the field, they struggle, and that's just because of an experience.
We've seen it all the times with a great best
freshman quarterback. Even Johnny Manzel struggled his freshman year. So
with Texas Tech, the way they've been able to build
and utilize their front seven, I think one of the
I think one of the best front sevens in college
football has helped them out tremendously. And on offense, what's
helped them out is because when they've blown out teams
(06:40):
in the first half, they can sit the stars in
the second half.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
It's allowed their quarterback.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Baron Morton, who's been dealing with a leg issue allowed
him to rest a lot more so the expectation would
be that if they can, if they can do the
exact same thing as BYU, he would get even more
rest going into what would be a likely first round
by of the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yeah, I think if Texas Tech win, there no worse
than the third seed, and if they win, they might
jump to two. I think they can move to two
because I think. I don't think Ohio State drops any
further than to Georgia. But I think and I don't. Yeah, well,
Georgia loses, they're going to be out of the top four.
But I think, and I've got a predictionary I'll get
we'll go with this in a minute. I think Tech
wins the Alabama Georgia game. This is where I think
(07:20):
we're gonna see some chaos. I think Alabama's better. And
I've never I've never been a big Georgia fan, going
even back far as far back as the herschel Walker days.
Georgia football has never excited me for ten seconds.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Now.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
May I just think they're a boring team. Maybe they're
Maybe they'll light it up and score fifty tomorrow. I
don't know, but I think I'm thinking Alabama wins this game.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
You know what's crazy about this game, Andy, is that
is that if Bama beats Georgia, obviously Georgia falls back,
let's say to number seven, So I'm like that Obama
goes up to maybe six. At that point, you're talking
about ole Miss, who'd even played in the Converce Championship,
being one of the four teams on buy and they
they and they're finished and they finished in the SEC.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
That's that's the hilariousness of it.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
But one aspect of chaos that comes from this is
that if Bama loses to Georgia, I think they could
be out depending on the separation of defeats. So if
they lose by one score or less, I think Bama
is likely going to stay in the in the in
the CFP.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
Is that fair? But if they lose by double think it.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
I think it depends on who else wins and loses,
whether Alabama gets knocked ot or not. So let's let's
just say if they lose, they're going to be the
only three lost team in the in the tournament.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Right.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Well, what I'm saying is this, like, let's assume the
other teams that that are that are favored to win.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
Tech wins, Ohio State wins.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
All that, Right, So if Bama loses and let's say
it's by ten points or more, and then Virginia wins,
and then you have and then obviously North text TWU lane,
they take that spot.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Are this is the CFP.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Really gonna reward, yes, reward a three loss BAMA team
over b YU or or potentially Miami. That's gonna where
it's gonna come down to, because like right now, in
my opinion, the CFP has their mind made up about
the top eight.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Those teams are all gonna make it.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Yeah, at the top eight, I think are set the
order of the top nine forty determent nine through fourteen
ninety twelve.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Well, I'm saying fourteen because the thirt team to fourteenth
the two teams that are going to be out right,
like that could change based on like how here's.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Something to think about too. How is Notre Dame ranked
the head of Miami when Miami beat them.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Because because they because the CFP is biased against that
and I and I don't like when people use the
term like people use hypothetical wins, like oh, they won
in September.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
But if it played now, they would win. The problem is.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
They played played and that's determined.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Yes, they played for real, and if Notre Dame in
Texas A and m played tomorrow in South Bend, then
they all come might be different.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
But that's a mic. We don't have to play it again.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
We can't.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
We should not be basing hypotheticals on how we decide
playoff spots. We should We needed to put it only
based on facts. So the facts is that Notre Dame did,
in fact lose to Miami, and.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
I think I don't think.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
I think there's an argument to be made that Notre
Dame should be the team out and not Miami, and
my guess is Miami might be.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
But here's the scenario.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Off.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
I think Ohio State wins, they stay the number one seed. Sure,
Texas Tech moves up to two with their win over
b YU. Because you have you have, you have Georgia
losing I have, and I have Georgia losing to Alabama.
I think I think that would be fun for me. Yeah,
I think.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Here here's the next scenario.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
I think, uh, if they and if that happens, I
think Oregon moves up to four. Indiana goes to three,
so the top four would be Ohio State, Texas, Tech,
I think Indiana, Oregon, and Georgia drops to.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Five or at that point they would drop at least
two spots.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Well, it depends on how much they lose by, right like,
because like that's going to determine a lot of the rankings.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Also is like how much did you lose by to
this team?
Speaker 3 (10:38):
I'm saying right now, And I tweeted this out and
let me and I want to hear what you think
about this without me explaining it. First, Duke Virginia is
the most important conference championship game tomorrow, Yes, and and
you and you get why because like Obama and Georgia, Like,
if Georgia wins that game, they're in a Bama.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
Bama may be in.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Regardless, Uh, Indiana, Ohio State they're in regardless, right yes,
Techy text in regardless BYU could potentially be in.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
We'll see.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
They have to win to get in.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
They have to win again and James Madison has to
beat Troy obviously to Texas like Toulane, North Texas. The
winner that game is going to get the automatic bid
unless like they become that fourth playoff team Duke Virginia
sets up this possibility, and we talked about it, but
I'll remind people. If Virginia wins, they would be the
fourth automatic qualifier because they won the ACC. If Duke
wins right now, they are unranked, which means the winner
(11:25):
of North Texas Tulane, who right now will the next
highest ranked conference champion.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
They would get the eleventh seed instead of the twelve.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Right and in the twelfth seed at that point becomes
possibly James Madison.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
If they beat Troy, if they beat True, if they don't,
a seven and five duke team up potentially gets in.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Exactly, there's a possibility that not only could the ACC
not have no team in the in the CFP, but.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
If there was, it could be a seven or at
eight and five at that point.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
So let's look at these potential matchups in the five
through twelve games. Okay, If assuming Georgia loses and drops
out of the top four, Okay, Georgia plays the North
Texas two lane winner five twelve. Sure Virginia wins of
the eleven seed, they go to Ole Miss Ole Miss
at six.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
That's not a bad matchup.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Seven is the Aggies and they host Alabama. Okay, they
didn't play this year.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Well, Obama wins when they jump up from because you
had them.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
I've got them at ten, no matter what. I got
them at ten, whether they win or I got them
at ten. If they win, I've got them out. If
they lose, okay, So.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
And that's an oaks for A and m Alabama.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
And then oh you And if it were me making
the decision, I would put Miami over Notre Dame and
Miami would be at OU. And what's interesting about Miami,
You know U. I don't think they've played each other
since the eighties, and those were some some hated rivals
back in the days. If OUs played Miami since nineteen
(12:43):
eighty eight, eighty nine, so eighty seventh around in there,
I'd have to go look and see.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
But I hadn't during the U days.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Well it was during the U days. N Oh, you
never beat them. Oh, you never beat Miami. They were
ranked one and two in eighty five and Jamel Halloway
takes over for Troy Aikman when Jerome Brown breaks Troy
Aikman's leg and Troy never plays another snap at OU.
He sets out the next year and goes to UCLA
(13:09):
and then goes on to the Cowboys, and then they
played them again in eighty seven and eighty eight and
lost to them both times. But that was back in
the day when OU ran the Wishbone and their defense
could They couldn't come from behind and they couldn't cover
Michael Irvin or any of the other guys that Miami had.
But I think an OU Miami matchup in that eight
to nine matchup would be I think that. And then
(13:32):
there's also up the potential for OU Notre Dame, which
has a history as well.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Okay, so here's how I would see all the conference champions,
like how it formats. So you and I agree, James
Madison would probably beat Troy. I no, no offense to Troy,
but James Madison I think has more to play for.
And also and also they get to host it Jacksonville
VERSU Kannessas State, even though Jacksonville State is the host team.
I want to give a lot of love to Jerry Mack,
the Kenesaws State head coach. They went from what two
and ten last year to nine and three. I'm gonna
(13:58):
say they win that game. Chile North Texas. We already
said North Texas in that one, Boise State hosting UNLV,
I would actually take the Broncos uh in the in
the weather in this one on the blue field. I
obviously we both have Tech Western Michigan texts on my
Western Michigan is the best team in the in that conference.
Like that's just that's so, I'm sorry, Miami, Ohio. I
(14:18):
actually have Georgia beating Bama. I think it's a revenge
game for them, and I think Bama actually could be
out of the CFP at that point. We both have
I have a Hot State beaten Indiana, but I think
it's gonna be a fairly close game.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
I don't see a blowout like some people are saying.
And Virginia and Duke.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Here, here's the stat of the day with that game,
Julian Sayan has complied.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Did I hear this? Riting's completing seventy eight percent of
his seventy.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Eight percent of his passes at a nine and a
half yards per completion rice But to be fair, like
he's his biggest his biggest opponents have been have been Texas, Michigan,
and Illinois, so they've had they have in the same
regard as a and m had a softer schedule, but
they they've also, to their credit, they've dominated their schedule.
So if you're a team that's really good, you play
bad team, you're supposed to dominate them and you take
(15:01):
them in the same reguards that they played good teams
and played them close.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
So in regard to the OU Miami series, yeah, they
played twice in the seventies and OU won both. They
played twice in the eighties in the U days, and
Miami won both of those games. And those were the
one was the Troy Aiightman broken lay game, and the
other was in the Orange Bowl, and that was the
Bosworth game. Right bye by Bosworth.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
No, that was the that was the championship. That was
the Orange Bowl in eighty eighty six.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Okay, uh, and then that was let's see, that was
I thought they played this this maybe leaving one of
these out. But they did play in seven and o nine,
once in Norman, once in Miami. I have no recollection
of those games.
Speaker 4 (15:41):
Yeah, the Miami went through a period where like they
might have been okay, but they weren't.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
They did't have the same OU won in Norman fifty
one to thirteen and lost in a couple of the
two years later in Miami by one twenty one to twenty. Okay,
all right, those are those are the bowl matchups. We'll
find out on Sunday. We'll also find out the Alamo Bowl,
and we'll tell you about some of the bulls that
have already been chosen, because ESPN says, this is what
we're doing, and we need to give you some prep
(16:06):
time to get ready for it. So we'll tell you
what all that is coming up on the ticket
