Speaker 1 (00:03):
One of my favorite movies of all time is Mashed.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
The movie will be so good? Yeah, so good. I
still watched Mash the TV show. Do you know they
do too? Nothing? Nothing beats Colonel Flag.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
No, he was the greatest. He was the greatest. And
I remember when I told you this off year. One
of my favorite episodes of all time is the of
the episode of Sergeant Tuttle who turned into Captain of Tuttle,
who never existed exist but everybody remembered him though.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
But yesterday I watched Radar give a pass to uh
Corporal lamb Uh. All right, So we were talking about
the Pacers, the Knicks and no one's gonna beat Oklahoma City.
And then Tim asked me, Hi, by the way, I'm
Jay Howard and he's Tim Tim Nugget Merryman. Tim said,

(00:51):
what about you know, things in the finals change, and
they do. We were talking about the ninety nine finals,
and I don't. I never pre pre did a call ever,
never was never.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
So when I'm going to play this right now, so
when you when you hear this, you realize that he
did not rehearse this. Sorry, I apologize for music behind you,
but things have disappeared in this building.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
So here we go.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
That was edited a little bit very much because I purposely,
purposely did not say the shot was no good. When
the shot was no good, I just simply said the
pride of the great lone Star State, the San Antonio
Spurs or NBA Champions as spree will missed the shot.
And that was purposely done. It's just, you know, this

(01:48):
is the New York stuff from coming out, folks. I
know I have cowboy hats now, but this is this
is the new One of the greatest calls of all
time was the call of Bobby Thompson's run against the
Dodgers in the nineteen fifty one National League playoff to
decide who would go to the World Series. And the

(02:08):
Giants had caught the Dodgers at the end of the year,
and they had this three game playoff, and the Giants
won when Bobby Thompson hit a three run home run
in the bottom of the ninth thinning at the Polo Grounds.
And Russ Hodges's call, which by the way, I used
to have in my office at all times on a cabinet,
which of course has gone now on a cart, a cart.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
It was a cart kind of looks like an eight track.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Looks like an eight track, but it was called a
cart and you could probably get it on YouTube probably.
And Hodge's call is, you know, Thompson hits one to
the left field line. It's going to be the Giants
win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants
win the pennant. Bobby Thompson hit one into the left
field stands there going crazy. The Giants win the pennant.

(02:52):
By the way, there's no prize for this. For those
of you who have heard that call, how many times
does Russ Hodges say the Giants win.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Then that's a good one. That's a good one.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yes, anyway, he did it that way. So at the
split second when I made the call, I said, I'm
not going to say spretty Well missed the shot. I'm
simply going to say, and that's why I pulled out
of mine. You know what, the Pride of the Great
Lone Star State, because since the Spurs had moved their
broadcasts after the first year there on KKYX, they moved

(03:29):
to WOAI. At that time, they were always on WOI,
with the exception of one year when they were on
ktsaying Bob Guthrie, who did the morning news since nineteen
fifty six on the radio station. He recorded it and
he always opened up what we call the main game
open by saying, the pride of the great lone Star State,

(03:50):
the San Antonio Spurs are on the air. And I
just thought, what better way of announcing a championship than
saying that. It was in part kind of a thank
you to Bob, who was never compensated, ever compensated for
doing that he was He was always Grottis. And I

(04:12):
gave Bob the big blow up pictures sewn hitting that shot.
I gave him that, and I the plaque underneath and said,
thanks for doing everything that you did. And I have
no idea where it is now because but that's why
I said that. And it was split second and nothing
was pre rehearsed because on the story I was going

(04:34):
to tell us. Laura Green and I had lunch with
a former w o I employee, was at the time
working for CBS Radio. His name was Kevin Geigrim Church
still is. We had lunch at Carmines and Times Square
and we were walking back to the hotel and I
said to her, what am I going to say tonight.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
So you're thinking about it already. Right after lunch, we
have a quadruple cast going out. There were four feeds
coming out of our broadcast location. The feed here was
going back to WI for broadcast, Then there was a
feed going to Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Then
there was a feed going to the NBA International Radio,

(05:15):
and then there was a feed going straight to Secauca's
New Jersey. So NBA, Uh, that's what they do, NBA
what they what they call it NBA properties. But they
used to produce all the NBA entertainment entertainment.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
NBA entertainment was because they were recording it to put
together the I don't think it was a DVD. I
think it was a CDD.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Well there was DVD done also, and some of your
calls ended up in there.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
But there was a lot of TV. Yeah, that's where
they were doing all that. So we were feeding live
to all these places. It was an enormous uh transmission.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
I remember, I remember studio and.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
I said, well we're going to.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
I don't want to, Hey, games over, I don't want.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
To, you know, I don't want to you know, sound
like a typical announcer. Well that was it, Uh, well,
we'll be back after this.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah, we're back, so we can have Charlie Parker dropping
that phone on the air.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
It'd be great.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
That happened about two hours later.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah, I was in the postgame post.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
It was the post post post post was the third
the third extra innings of the postgame that was done.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
He did that. We had the Spurs through a party
in the lobby of the Four Seasons and I said,
you want to go? And I think he was already
three sheets to the wind. I don't remember he said yes,
he said yes, I said, let's go. So we walked
over to the party and we walked in like we
owned the place. And so no one said if you
want to go somewhere where you're not welcome, just walking

(06:34):
like like you belong. What are you doing? What do
you mean you're asking me talking?

Speaker 1 (06:38):
What are you doing here?

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Talk? We walked in and I remember I think he
had my phone. I'm not sure.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
No, somebody handed him your phone.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Somebody handed We were.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Talking to you first and then and then you said
something and somebody handed.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
And was tired of taking phone calls, Yes he was.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Because it was crazy. So it was a crazy night.
When we put.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Charlotte and I remember Charlie was sitting on this couch and
then all of a sudden I heard that come out
and I quickly ran the phone.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
There was nothing we could do either because there was
no delay.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Man, Oh you were not in delay.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
There wasn't any delay back then, Sure, there was no.
We didn't use it.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
We had we were delayed in Spurs games since Rodman
dropped one, and so yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
We weren't that night, but it was between midnight and six.
It was in that Save Harbor, as they call it.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Save Harbor has many many means.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Anyway, we had to remind Charlie, hey, you're on the air.
On the air, I didn't know that. Well, you dropped
something else and then I didn't know that right, So anyway,
fun times, good times. Yes, we talked about the two.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Cowboy hats I bought last Saturday at Paris hatters. Hello Domingo,
Hi Alexandra.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
And there was one more person you forgot abe yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Abe he going to Anyway, they did a great job,
so I said I would say hi today. So I
just did. I assumed, I assume, I assume the Longhorns
have already beaten Houston seven nothing. We've talked about the
next one, kicking the Pacers toss and line of what
happens tomorrow. Although we've agreed that no one is beating

(08:09):
the thunder. Do you disagree? Give us a call at
two ten, seven, three, six Nights, seven sixty. The Battle
for Lord Stanley Cup starts on Wednesday, match opening in Edmonton.
I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm pretty
sure I'm rooting for the Oilers. Really, yes, that that

(08:29):
I want to see. I want to see a Canadian
team win the Cup. Again. I'm not sure they're better
than the Panthers. I think the Panthers are probably better
in goal and top to bottom, but Connor McDavid is
worth the price of admission. Florida might be better. But
I'm rooting for the Edmontons. So there, okay, there So

(08:51):
also coming up, I want to talk about ai Okay, okay,
I want to talk about ai Alan.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
We're gonna talk practice, no practice, talking about practice, and
I want.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
To talk about the scoreboard in Major League Baseball.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
These are all things that are very important to me,
and we're going to talk about them and you can
chime in. Also if You're alive at seven three, six nights,
seven sixty
