Speaker 1 (00:04):
Thank you so much for being part of our day.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
We're going to talk about the Temple situation in regards
to gambling and what they found out. They're coming up
a little bit and the NCAA has said, well, we
thought about letting you guys gamble on pro sports, but
that's not going to happen. And I think that's a
good thing, and I'll tell you why coming up in
a bit. All Right, the Spurs win last night over Atlanta,
and a lot of people that I've talked to today, man,
(00:28):
how about that David Jones Garcia guy. He was great
last night, wasn't he? And he has been great every
chance he's gotten to play. He's shown that he can
play at this level and be a pretty good role
player for this team and pretty much a diamond in
the rough. And the Spurs have had this happen in
You know that we discovered David Jones Garcia in the
(00:48):
Summer League this year, and if you go back that
so I believe how we found Roger Mason and Gary
Neal and guys like that that had a pretty good
run in the game for quite a while. I even
think Devin Brown played in the Summer League back in
the early two thousands, and that was one of the
reasons why the Spurs went after him after his days
were over with at UTSA.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Dwayne Dedmon too, he's forgotten here.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, we got a lot of there's a lot of
guys that have gotten their path into the pros by
having a great summer league. And right now you're missing
three really important players. Obviously Wimby, but Fox and Cassell
are part of your starting lineup.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
I mean, I mean not Cassel and Harper.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Sell part of your starting lineup, Castle and then Harper
coming off the bench. So when the when the team
is one hundred percent healthy, and that may never happen
because at some point when somebody gets healthy, somebody else
may be getting getting hurt. But assuming that come playoff
time or the meat of the season time, the team
is healthy. Your starters are Foxcastle, to Sell, Barns and Wimby,
(01:53):
and you're a first five off the bench or a Harper, Championnee, Keldon, Johnson,
Cornett and Sohn. And the next guy is Alynic And
the best case scenario for guards is likely David Jones
Garcia playing in that twelfth player spot, maybe Carter Bryant
I don't know that Carter Bryant's gonna I think Carter
Bryant I think well, I think Carter Bryant's got a
(02:15):
tremendous upside, and I think as long as he continues
to improve, he's gonna have a stellar NBA career. I
just don't think it's gonna happen this year. I think
he's gonna get and I wouldn't be surprised if he
plays a few games in Austin and if he just
to get him reps, just to get him used to playing,
(02:36):
because I do there's only so many minutes that you
can play these guys, and you're gonna play your first
five guys about thirty minutes a game. On the average,
they're gonna get it, and on some nights Wemby's gonna
get more than that. So if you just play those
five guys thirty minutes, that's one hundred and fifty out
of two hundred and forty minutes that exists in a game.
And so you're basically telling the other five guys, we're
(02:59):
gonna play you about twenty minutes a piece. Uh, and
that's going to give you a The bitch is going
to get shorter. As the season gets longer, there's gonna
be guys that played in the regular season that don't
play in the playoffs unless there's foul situations. So I'm
very much in a celebratory mood like most people are
with what David Jones Garcia is doing. And his goal
(03:22):
and his role right now is make them take you
out of the lineup, make them wish they didn't when
you take when they take you out of the lineup,
And that's got to be the main goal that he
has for the rest of this run while the players
are hurt, and also the same situation when the players
come back. But if and maybe David Jones Garcia becomes
(03:42):
you know, monogenobil. We didn't know how good he was
going to be until we saw how good he was
going to be, and I hope he does. And if
it happens here, great, then that means somebody else has
got to go because there's only so many minutes that
you can play these guys when you have a one
hundred percent healthy team. But the other factor in all
this is no team is always a percent healthy, and
very few teams go through an entire season without some
(04:05):
having some players miss games. And my thought is if
David Jones Garcia can knock down twelve to fifteen a
game while Harper and Castle can't play that whenever somebody
else goes down, that's a guard. Maybe you can play
him in those spots again and count on him because
he's the twelfth guy on the roster when you're healthy,
(04:26):
and he's the eighth guy on the roster when you're not.
That's a great thing to have because you have to
still win these games. And with Phoenix and Portland and
Minnesota and Denver coming up on this road trip, worst
case scenario you want to be is two and two.
You would like to be three and one. You sure
would like to be four to oh, but you don't
want to be one in three or zero and four.
(04:46):
And if David Jones, Garcia and anybody else on this
roster can help you get there, that's a good thing.
And hopefully he continues to play well while these guys
are in absentia.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
It's been fun to watch him play because especially in
the Summer League, and I know you kind of laugh
with a summer the in terms of watching it, but
he was scoring at will and yesterday just because I
know we want to give credit to that once again.
I want to shout out my guy, my favorite right
now for six minut of year, Calden Johnson twenty five points,
seven rebounds. Andy, did you know he is seventeenth in
(05:17):
the NBA in field goal percentage. He's making fifty seven
percent of his shots and he's only the second non
post or non players who don't play the four of
the five.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
He's the second highest player at completion in that.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Way, and he only makes twenty million a year a
little bit less, and he's cheap cheap ish. See that's
the thing.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
When every trade scenario that came up this summer, when
people were talking about Durant or Jannis or anybody else
for that matter, I kept saying, why do you want
to move Keldon Johnson? He is an energy guy off
the bench. He is a really good player, and you're
paying him nothing compared to the rest of the NBA.
And he is a very dynamic player and he gets
(05:57):
the game. He understands the game terms of coaches say
high basketball IQ. Keldon's got that and he's been here
now for six seasons. So it's the I don't think
you can under are you? I don't think you can
overestimate at all. I think this is a great thing
that Brian Wright and the staff is done in building
(06:18):
this roster. And it didn't I didn't really see what
they were doing until they did it, Because, yeah, I
think it would have been great to get Kevin Durant
to play next to Wimby or Giannis, but at the
price that you were going to have to pay to
do that, or you were going to be in the
second Apron forever, that was something that the team didn't
want to do.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
And I'm going to go back and say this again.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Wimby's the number one pick in the drafty Vassel was
the number nine or ten pick in the draft. Castle
was four, Fox was four when he was drafted, Harper fourteenth.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Kelvin second.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
What's that Harper was second? It was Bright was fourteenth.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Keldon Johnson was twenty sixth or seventh, twenty ninth. He
was that twenty ninth pick in the draft. And so
Hn was a top ten pick when he was eight
or nine when he was drafted. I don't remember where
Harrison Barnes was drafted, but he's got that North Carolina deal.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
He was like top five when he was drafted.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
I think so. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
So you've got all these these lottery picks and first
round draft picks that are the makeup of your team,
and their money is staggered to a point to where
they're not gonna have to pay luxury tax in the
second apron to do that. And I don't think there's
very many teams in the league that can say that
and have the balanced attack that they have. I think
the Lakers are If Austin Reeves scores thirty and Luca
(07:37):
has a good night, you win. And oh, by the way,
Lebron may help us out a little bit this year.
And I think Denver is Jokic centric, which is not
a bad thing to be, but they're still Joki centric,
and Minnesota is very much Anthony Edward centric. Where the
Spurs are. There's a lot of guys out there now.
Wimby's the main catalyst and all this, and you're not
(07:57):
winning championships without him, I can guarantee you that. But uh,
hopefully he's back in December and the CAF injury goes
away and I have to worry about that anymore. But
the makeup of this roster is is really good, and
I think people are underestimating just how good it is.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Another guy we've underestimated, a guy that I was ready
to move off of. I'm happy to say I'm wrong.
Julian Champenny had has made his first start the night
last night.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Because they moved him into there.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
He was twenty points, he took a let, he took
ten three, He made fifty percent of his three pointers. Andy,
I've talked about, I've talked about how him come off
the bench has been huge. He's become that three point
threat off the bench for this team. He was second
behind only David Jones Garcia and plus minus And for
those that don't know, plus minus on a stat sheet
means in terms of plays offensively and defensively, if you
(08:43):
had a positive or negative play on the court.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
So if you're if you being on the court impacted
the team positively or negatively, exactly my points.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
If if you had if you had forty positive plays
to thirty negative plays, your plus minus is plus ten.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
So that that's so a plus fifteen is fantastic.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, if the team it's It's basically what what analytics
guys look for is what lineup played the best right
and even if you lost a game and you have
five guys that were plus ten. That lineup gave you
the most opportunity to have the most So it's something
that you can gauge yourself on going into the next
game or games that this particular group plays together and
(09:19):
plays together well. A lot of times coaches will get
into their sub rotations and then they'll look out there
and go, wait a second, I don't have a shooter
on the floor. I have nobody that can score. I
got five defenders, all right, we got to change. And
you may see on an immediate change because in the
minutia of the game and it's going so fast that
even coaches sometimes realize where's my offense coming from. I
(09:40):
can get defense, but unless they get a fast break steal,
we're not scoring, right, So they've got to balance that
out to some expenses.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
It's not is tough because like unfortunately, if you're a
guy who's primarily a defensive player and you're not really
an offensive threat, that is kind of like it's not
it kind of holds your team back a little bit
to that regard. So if you're down by like ten points,
you make a comeback, you're going to see a lot
that has more defensive guys. Not every team, though, has
reliable two way players consistently like on this team. Obviously,
Wimby is by far your best two way player. Yes,
(10:08):
Castle would be the next guy, And then you have
guys like Kelton's not bad at both. Kelton I think
is better defense like so far than he was last year,
but he's definitely more of an offensive threat.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
I would probably say more basell in that regard.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Well, defense and rebounding are about effort and desire, and
some players have the effort and the desire and some don't.
But you can always play defense if you want to
work at it.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
And Harrison Barnes obviously a really good two way player too.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Yeah I want to.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
But when Castle and Wimby get back, if this team
is still in the position where they are, where they're
a six, fifth or fourth place team, then all of
a sudden, what you feel like your standard is is
going to go a lot higher. And that's something that
is really good to see. But yeah, I'm very excited
about David Jones Garcia, but when the team is at
full throttle, I just don't know where he plays and
(10:57):
where he gets his minute. So he better perform when
he's getting the opportunity to perform as he is right now.
And because he's doing that, the Spurs are still only
have four losses and ere in fifth place in the West.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
No, and it's it's been, it's been. It's been fun
to see too. That's another thing, is is this this
Spurs team not just dom it.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
They're fun. They're fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
And going back to Kelton Johnson, right now, we understand
he is not the he's he's not the defensive force
that weinby is. He's also not gonna make a lot
of those splash plays in the outside. But he is
by far pounerful pound, your best athlete. You talked about it.
He is very much the vocal leader of this team.
He's like, he's the uh, he's the I guess you
call it the the raw rock guy. What the the
guy who brings the energy. And he has become one
(11:37):
of my favorite players just in terms of like just
with the ball to watch because you don't know if
he's gonna take it to the to the whole, you know,
if he's gonna like kick it download to somebody. It's
fun to watch this team and it's been a while
since it's been just overall fun.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Well.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
I think when players of this ilk are playing at
their peak efficiency, you feel confident in their abilities, and
that rubs off on the fans and the players and
the coaches and the team and and it makes for
something a.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
They have what Phoenix on Sunday, and the road trip
continues to Portland and then finishes up after Thanksgiving at
Minnesota and Denver. Right now, Denver is eleven and three,
Minnesota is ten and five. Phoenix is a surprising nine
and six. I still don't think they're a playoff team,
although right now the Mavericks are in bad shape one other.
(12:26):
We'll get into this a little bit later if we
have time, but the Mavericks are basically going to blow
up their team. They're shopping Anthony Davis. They're shopping Klay Thompson.
They are not shopping Kyrie Irving, and they're going to
try to build around Kyrie and Cooper Flag.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
I don't know what.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
I haven't seen the Mavericks play since they played the
Spurs at the beginning of the year, but they are
The experiment with Cooper Flag at point guard can't last long,
they've got to get somebody else that can run the show.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
Yeah, he's way too inexperience in this way to run
because when at Duke he was out of a premiuse
run all five positions if you wanted to.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
But here in the NBA, I do believe he's a
true wing.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
They don't have any uh in North Carolina Wilmington games
on the Dallas Maverick schedule.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
So I mean the thing is though, is that And
I don't know how usual about this Andy, but the
West has been kind of underwhelming, whereas last year it
felt like there was at least ten eleven teams deep.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Now I only see like seven.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Well, the Spurs would be in second if they were
in the West, I.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
Mean, I mean in the East, they were in the ease.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
I know, but like like you have it in front
of you one through six thunder Nuggets, Rockets, Lake or Spurs, Wolves,
and then it goes down to the Warriors and the Suns.
And the Warriors I would think are more a threat
right now in the Suns, but their thing has obviously been,
you know, honestly inconsistency.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Well, the Phoenix has been.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Scoring a lot of points and they're not really really
good on defense, and then the rest of it is
just a bunch of phil.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Honestly, here's what I don't get.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
The Clippers are four and eleven and James Harden's having
a great year and they're still four and eleven.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
Well, I mean, John Wall had some good years with
bad Washington games. You could be an all star on
a crappy team.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Yeah, but they also have Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
I don't know how much he's playing because I don't care,
but the Clippers are underachieving. Dallas has been the complete aberrat.
I thought Dallas would be competitive, they have not been.
And so basically, if you look at the standings, I
didn't think Phoenix would be a top ten team and
I didn't think Utah would be a top ten team.
But I also didn't think the Clippers of the Mavericks
(14:20):
would be out of the playoffs. And right now and
it's you know, we're not even to the quarter pole yet,
those two teams are not looking like they're ever going
to get there. And I cannot figure out what's happened
to Sacramento. The Sacramento has falling off a clip. They
were the third best team and twenty twenty three, and
they were terrible last year and they're worse this year.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Of course, they don't have yarn Fox anymore. That may
be part of the problem.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Sucks for them, but I mean, I mean to be fair,
go back to the Clippers for a second. If if
you're trying to rely on Kawhi Learn being out there,
you have really high aspirations.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
See what did there?
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Yes, yeah, he doesn't have any aspirations at all. All right,
let's get to gambling and temple and college sports and
who can bet and who can't? All that straight ahead
on the tickets
