Speaker 1 (00:04):
You know, we have talked about for years how cool
it would be if we could get an up close
and personal thirty for thirty ESPN documentary on the Spurs
and the Big Three. Yes, and we have said yeah,
but it'll never happen because those that would have to be
involved in it really don't care. Tim Duncan doesn't really
care that much about talking about himself. Mano and Tony

(00:27):
never have, and neither us Pop And those are the
four guys that have to be a part of the
of the story. But here's something I never thought we
would see. Tim Duncan's brother is going to showcase a
documentary at the Austin Film Festival on Tim Duncan. It
is called The Boy from Saint Croix and it is

(00:49):
described as an intimate portrait of the quiet but beloved
NBA player.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Interesting, do we know where it's going to be playing.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
It's going to be well, it's going to pre ner
at the Austin Film Festival, okay, But after that, I
don't know what network or streaming service or whatever. But
if you want to see it first before anybody else does,
you got to go to the Austin Film Festival.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I would be interested in seeing that, to actually see
a side of Tim Duncan that we don't.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
We've never seen, we've never seen.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Never ever even come close to seeing. Yeah, those stories great. Yeah,
the problem is is he's never one to tell it.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I mean the one time we kind of got something
like that, it was more of a comedy bit because
everybody knew that Tim wasn't one to talk a lot.
Was the Richard Jefferson thing that he did on YouTube,
and it was like the most cringe uncomfortable thing that
there was.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Tell me about your kids?

Speaker 2 (01:46):
No, yeah, no, how about your wife? Man, she's really
good looking. Really question next question.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
It was like, maybe the brother can get more out
of him than than Richard Jefferson was able to.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Oh yeah, I mean that was it was clearly they
were just leaning on a bit that that's how Tim is.
So but uh, yeah, it'll be it'll be interesting to
see because again, of all things, you know, Tim Duncan
wanted to be a swimmer growing up in Saint Croix,
and then when the you know, storms happened and destroyed
the pool, grabbed the basketball and decided to start being

(02:22):
working on the early fundamental fundamentals.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Well, not that I wish a storm on any community,
but it worked out for the best for him.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah, yeah, worked out. I would say it worked out
pretty good. You know, he's he's up there, he's kind
of good.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
I've always thought that all of those guys have have
stories to tell, and that's why the national media thinks
the spurs are boring because we don't know about the stories.
But what I find the most interesting are the Facebook
reels and the and the TikTok reels where other players
in the NBA talk about trying to get under Tim
duck and skin and failing so miserably at it that

(02:59):
they de affecting their own game.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
And Kevin Garnett used to try to top trash to
Tim and you go, nice, yeah job.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah, yeah, better luck next time. Yeah yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Boogie Cousins DeMarcus Cousins when he was a rookie at Sacramento,
that one that pops up all the time. You know,
he's like, man, here, I was thinking I was some
you know, top bleep. I'm going up against Tim Duncan
and I just like piled drive into him, hit, knock
him down on the floor. And then Tim gets up,
doesn't say anything and then reels off I think it

(03:30):
was sixteen strike points and at the end of the game,
he slaps him on the button says, good job, young fellow.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Yeah, see next game.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah. That's the that's the psychological mind games that Tim
would play with people, and that's why he's the greatest
power forward of all time.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
That's that's the thing that we that I think that
and I just look at the history of the Spurs
and that they when we got two of the media age,
because I think the seventies and eighties, he had radio shows,
you had three TV networks, you know, three.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
TV local stations.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
And I wasn't here before eighty eight, so I don't
know how Ice was covered, but I'm sure it was
godlike and he still is to a certain extent, as
he should be. But in the era of the Internet
and the era of streaming, where the Spurs players could
have told their story, it was a story that no
one they didn't think was important enough to tell. And
that's why I always say that, it's when you do

(04:27):
a documentary like this.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Now.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
We had mac Ingele on the other day and he
was telling me the last dance for Mike with Michael Jordan,
and he thinks, to a certain extent, the Gambler and
his cowboys with the show that's on Netflix now is
more of a ode to Michael Jordan or ode to
Jerry Jones. Now the ode to Michael Jordan. I'll agree
with a little bit because I agree with a lot

(04:51):
of what Michael Jordan had to say, especially about the Pistons,
who nobody unless you're a Pistons fan, liked them. And
I've had my issues with Isaiah Thomas when he was plowing.
He may be a totally different player than he was
when I was around him, but when I was around
him the brief few times, you only get one chance
to make a first impression, and he made a bad one.
But I do think that the Spurs story was worth telling.

(05:14):
They just never thought that it was worth telling, so
they didn't do what and they didn't seek attention for
themselves they taught. They sought attention for the team in
an era where it's always been me, me, me, they
were about we we we and that's the reason why
they were the ones that got labeled as boring by
a lot of the national media.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, that's why they came up with the beautiful game good,
not great. You know, the only type of if you
want to call it, documentary that we ever got was
whenever they would win the championship. And of course, you know,
the NBA just goes into the era, into the archives
and then just pulls some of that stuff. That was
the closest thing we ever got to a documentary.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
But remember Tim Duckett interviews and Monogenoble interviews and Tony
Parker postgame interviews. They really didn't say anything. They never
have had bulletin board material. It was never controversy, which
it probably shouldn't be anyway, But it was always about, Uh,
it was always about how they played well as a
team and how they picked up one another, and the

(06:14):
camaraderie that they had as teammates. And I would imagine
that Tim and Toni and Manu and probably a few
others are lifelong friends. Now, I think you have that
bond with a lot of teams and a lot of teammates,
but I don't know that you have the bond that
they have as much as that. The Spurs dynasty teams
were Oh yeah, and I've said this many times, Yeah
they won, they won five championships, but they were eye

(06:38):
lashes away from three or four more.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Yeah, you know the what if scenario if you know
the Dirk Novinsky shot doesn't go in, or the mysterious
call that was called on Manu the point four that.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
He did foul Dirk. No, I didn't, I did he
did foul Dirk.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
I mean we got you see it through a different
colored glass. But I remember the highlight that where Pop
said no, no threes, no fouls and Dirk pump fake
for the three and went to the basket and Minho
fouled him.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Uh and so uh so there you go.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Still too soon that in point four four?

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Nah, still too soon point four?

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Yeah, so you could have won three, four, five, six
o seven. That could have been, you know, a pretty
good run right there. They they got three oh five
and seven, but they missed the other two on very
very I won't say questionable situations, but lucky situations.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
For the other team. Yeah. Yeah, that's it.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
But I'm anxious to see what this is about and
if Tim's brother can get Tim to actually say something,
because I think it's a great story and I think
what they were able to do was was amazing, especially
for this community. And I wish the rest of the
world knew how good it was, but how much they're
actually gonna let us know is is kind of a
kind of interesting. All right, One more segment to go.

(07:56):
We wrap up the day from Kyle Field.
