Speaker 1 (00:04):
It is The and the Average Show, along with Shane
Carter Audio, the seminator and producer for Today, Michael Off
Today Back Tomorrow. We've been talking about the Spurs draft
for the last five days since they made their picks
last week and the I think the opportunities are endless
for how the Spurs can shape up their roster. I

(00:26):
hope they could get I don't know that much about
Cornette from Boston or Yabusele, the other player that has
been rumored to be the big that they're going to get,
But whoever it is, I would not be the least
bit surprised to see that particular person in a starting role.

(00:46):
And I think that if that happens, you can see
a I think you've got to get Stephan Castle into
the end of the starting five somehow, and that may
be to you, and then you have to make a decision.
And this will be a summerly a training camp, uh,
probably the first ten to fifteen.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Games of the season, trying different things.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Uh. Deer and Fox has got to be the de
facto point guard. Castle's got to be the backup. But
Castle's also got to start. So do you start Harper
or do you start Vissel. Now you probably start Vassel
and bring Harper in slowly and get him acclim acclimated
to the league. But at some point is Vessill better
as a six man or is he better as a starter? Uh,
You've got the I think we're going to see a

(01:28):
lot of three guard lineups with the Spurs this year,
with Fox Castle, Harper, uh, and maybe even a four
guard lineup with Vissel. All four on the floor. You
can spread the floor, you can drive and kick. You
can get the ball to Wemby in the corners. You
can get the ball to Wemby where wherever he wants it.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
And then you got somehow to put into the rotation
Keldon Johnson and and uh and Harrison Barnes CHAMPENNI possibly
is your best three point threat. U. We know that
the story on Carter Bryant is a three and D guy.
I know he shot forty percent from the three in college,

(02:07):
close about thirty eight. I'll take that as long as
he can, As long as he puts up five or
six a game. I think so ends the jack of
all trades player. You plug him in where you need
him and when you need him, and you're either gonna
get then you got the rest of the roster to me.
If the Spurs had gotten to Rant or if they
go after Giannis, they're giving up their bench in order

(02:29):
to do that, and that means that throughout the regular
season your starters have to log a lot of minutes.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
And the one thing about.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Oklahoma City, and honestly, I did not watch them play
a lot in the regular season, and I'm glad I
didn't because I don't like the way they play offense.
I think their offense is very predictable and somewhat defendable
in the future.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Like school Yard, Well, it's shakee dribbles the.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Ball till there's eight on the shot clock and then
penetrates and shoots, or penetrates and kicks, or does some
kind of a weave with Jdubb and he does the
same thing, or they involved some kind of pick and
roll with Holmegrin. I don't think their offense is overly sophisticated.
The Spurs offense in the latter part of the duncan
Jenoblee Parker era with movement, with precision passing, with people

(03:15):
getting to their spots, a Danny Green spotting up to
shoot a three and Bruce Bowen in the corner. All
of those things I think make for a harder to
defend defense. Now, if you miss, then any defense is easy.
But if you're on your shot and you're moving without
the basketball and there's constant flow of the game, to me,

(03:35):
the Oklahoma City offense stuck too much, but it worked
in the playoffs because they have a miraculous one on
one mid range player in Shay Gilgess Alexander, and they've
got a good running mate for him and Jada, And
they've got Holmgren, who did not have a good first
couple of series, but I thought played pretty well in
the Indiana series, especially in the last couple of games.

(03:57):
So there are so many different things that the Spurs
can do. And my guess is is the offense will
mirror what we've seen in the past, with a lot
of movement, a lot of motion, and people getting to
spots where they can do something productive with it when
they get there. But I don't necessarily think that every
game the same five are going to be on the
floor in the last two minutes of the game. I

(04:17):
think the Spurs can match up big, I think they
can match up small, and I think they can match
up in between and with when if you look at
a two be to name center, whether it's Cornet, Cornett
or Ale, and then you've got Wimby, Harper, Castle, Fox, Barnes, Johnson, Vessel,
Champagnee and Bryant and so Hn.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
I mean that is, let me get five.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
That's eleven guys right there that you can count on
that when they're on the floor, whether they're a starter
or a reserve, that they're not going to give up
a lot when it comes to protecting a lead. And
I think that's really important to and I'm sure that
they've already got a plan on how they're going to
make minutes, especially with Wimby early in the season coming

(05:03):
back after the scare last year. And I would rather
everybody play eighty games and play twenty five to twenty
eight minutes in the regular season than to have players
take nights off and then when they come back they
play thirty four to thirty five. And with this group
of players and with this amount of depth, there's no
reason why the Spurs can't win games even if the

(05:25):
leading scorer in a certain game is not Wimby or
not Fox or not Castle or not Harper, it's somebody else,
And I think there's going to be nights where it
is somebody else that's a leading scorer or the catalyst
for a win or the catalyst for a run. There's
so many options that these that they have that maybe
at some point there's too many options and you've got

(05:46):
to hone in on what you really feel the most
comfortable with, especially as you get later in the season.
But the Spurs won thirty four games last year without
Harper and without without Wimby for the last half of
the season, and without Bryant. I think that there's I
think there's a third more wins in this team with

(06:08):
this roster, and that would put him near fifty wins.
And I think that Skets ship probably the sixth seed
in the playoffs, if not better. And then you have
to see where you are when you get into the
trade deadline if you need to make a move to bolster.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
A certain spot.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
My guess is as it could be three point shooting,
but then how do you work in a three point
shooter and get him his shots on the basket. I
think that teams that have under eighteen made threes a
game are going to struggle to win a lot. I
think that's the magic number that you've got to get to.
But certainly the roster has been built and I think

(06:42):
very similar to what we saw with the way both
Indiana and Oklahoma City were able to get to the
finals and.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
You laid it out.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
The reality is that we know the Aaron, Fox and
Wenby are going to be are going to be for
sure starters. Where does comp Where the conversation really starts
is who's going to play the three? Because are they
going to go three guards with? With Castle and Harper
out there? Is Vasell gonna be the primary three? Are
they gonna go with h barn Is gonna be more
of a bench guy or is he gonna start? Are
they gonna have this new center who we expect to happen?

(07:09):
Is he gonna start the three? Whoever plays that third
one I think is going to be the caveat of world.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Look at all the potentials to play the three. If
Fox and Castle start, the potentials are Harper, Barnes and Vassil.
Now when Barnes is in the game, you've got a bigger,
stronger player that can defend.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
He's six eight almost six y nine.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
If it's Harper or Vassel, you've got a smaller, weaker player.
And I'm not using weak in terms of being derogatory.
You're just not as big and strong as as some
of the others are.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Uh. So you've got we got breaking breaking news here
it is.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
We've all the waiting for ya Shamseranio free agent Luke
Cornett is signing a four year, forty one million dollar
deal with the San Antonio Spurs.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
I'll take that. We've got our center, yeah, or I
know they're big. However you want to look.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
At it, well, yeah, I mean, Womy's gonna be the
primary big. But now when we can play more like
outside outside of paints.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
So what you have is you have your weak side rebounder,
you have the you have a seven foot guy that
can play on the other side of the offense. And
I don't know if he starts or not, but he
takes the role that was vacated when Zach Collins was traded.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Uh And maybe he can.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Play a little bit in different ways than that. But
you you probably don't go after the other guy. Now
you bussele a, maybe you do. I don't know where
they work on that, but he.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Can probably a probably a cheap sign.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
He won't be very expensive.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Well, Cornett's not not expensive. At ten million a year.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
I know he'll he'll cost you less less.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
I mean that that's a that's a bargain player right there.
When you're it's not that forty one million is chump
change for the rest of us, But when it comes
to NBA money, you know, that's a that's a good deal.
Ten years and forty one million. It's an easily tradable
come four years, four years, four years and ten million.
So it's an easily tradable contract. And now, like you said, here,

(09:07):
here's the thing about the three spot. I would rather
the three spot make the other guys chase on offense.
And I don't really care about the defense because who
are you guarding with threes in the league with who's
the Oklahoma Cities three?

Speaker 3 (09:24):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (09:24):
J will right, Well, it's j Well JJJ. Jwell is
the guy in the B.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
J dub is the is probably the two three. Ever
you want to look at it. Yeah, uh, and so
you got so. I think Masel or Harper or Kelden
or whoever's in at the three can guard him. Lebron's
obviously the biggest three out there with the size and
strength that's there. Probably Booker is the three for Phoenix.

(09:51):
I'm not concerned about. I'm gonna make him work on
defense with whoever I put out there. Cooper Flag is
the probably gonna play three for Dallas. Yes, so he's
still got some things to learn. So yeah, he's six
eight sixty nine, but I don't mind putting a sixty
five or sixty six guy on him because I'm gonna
make him work on defense and that's going to slow

(10:12):
him down offensively.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
He's thin anyways.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
Yeah, well he'll get bigger, they'll put him in the
weight room, So I'm not concerned. See, I think we
make too big of a deal about well, the small
forward has evolved into a six eight sixty nine guy
that is big and strong and physical and it's going
to post you up and wear you at all game.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
But if that's the case, I'm going to counter that
with a six.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Six sixty five guy that's going to run him all
over the floor and he's he's going to have no
legs by the fourth quarter. So I think there's some
options there that the Spurs have, and offensively, the two
and the three basically mirror each other. Ones on the
left side of the offense, usually ones on the other
side what regardless of what set that they're in, and
typically the two and the three offensively are interchangeable pieces.

(10:53):
All right, let's talk about this football trade that just
happened today and last night with Pittsburgh and Miami making
some changes. We'll say, see what that's got in store. Next,
it's the Andy Everage Show on the ticket
