Speaker 1 (00:01):
JJ Paranz joins us from inside Rudbunners Sports. It's amazing
he did it again, JJ. Jeff Trailer figures out a
way to keep people around with no money.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Big big sigh of relief over on sixteen oh four
in Iten area last week when the spring transfer window closed.
Just weird, weird timing. These last two transfer portal cycles
have hit kind of in the middle, this time in
the spring, and the fall was during the bowl game,

(00:33):
So they're just finding a way. It's getting harder and harder. Though.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Were you surprised that Tate Sandel left?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, I was. From what I understand, that was a
situation that kind of popped out out of nowhere. It's
hard to prove tampering these days, and I think the
conversations I have is that even if they are able
to prove it, the NCAA and the powers that be,
I don't know that they cared that all of this
stuff is happening. But literally, I think that's something that

(01:04):
popped up within a few hours. And now he's OU's
starting kicker, right, So that's one of those things where
how does that affect what's the trickle down situation? Michael
Petero was number two, now he's number one. Do they
have to go look for another kicker? That's something they're
going to have to kind of figure out. But yeah,
this is uh, it's been wild since the portal opened,

(01:28):
things got going, and every single cycle it just keeps
on getting a little bit more atchy. Time after time.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
I saw that you posted on I think Facebook or
Instagram or Twitter or both or all three. This is
another miracle that Jeff Trayler pulled off. But how much
longer can this be sustained? When Utsa's max player last year,
Joe Evans was getting around thirty five thousand dollars and
I'm sure take got at least that much to be
a kicker. It owe you, So how do you? How

(01:58):
does this? What's going to happen? I guess everybody no
one knows, but some's got to happen.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
It's hard, right, I think I wouldn't want to single
the guys out, but people would be shocked to learn that.
You know, a handful of these guys were tampered with, uh,
almost almost to the point where they were they had
to leave right because the offers were so much. But
you know, Jeff is a heck of a recruiter and

(02:26):
he was able to stay and that portal closed at midnight,
you know, Saturday morning, Friday night, right, and it went
down to the wire with these guys and they were
there at practice on Saturday morning, right, So he was
able to get it done. I just it's not sustainable,
not for you, TSA. I mean, there's limited resources there.

(02:46):
It's going to take a combination of things.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Right.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Play Fire Playfi Max is now a thing that's going
to get going. That's going to help. It's probably going
to take the school's administration to commit to a dollar
figures saying hey, we are going to give you this
much for football, basketball, The other sports are going to
get this much. This is what you have to recruit
to and that's what it's going to take. Because impossible

(03:15):
to think that, you know, half this team could be
gone at the end of the season when the December
window opens, and this time one calendar year, I don't
know if UTSA could even survive. I mean if they
lost half the players that were tampered with this year,
I mean, you're talking about a summer just full of anks.
Some are looking for star players to contribute to an

(03:36):
offense that you know, it's supposed to be pretty good. Now,
luckily they held out to those guys this time. Right,
how long did you keep gambling? It's like going to
Vegas every day at the race.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
It's like going to Vegas with ten dollars in your
pocket and hoping that you hit so you can keep betting.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Cope is in a strategy. So the good thing is
like they're waiting on the house settlement. I think once
that kicks in, we'll really start to see some progress there.
But really I think it's going to boil down to
some sort of NCAA deal. I think if they change
that you have to sit out maybe a year instead

(04:13):
of it being immediate, that that could help. But really
it's going to come down to the resources and how
you say gets more. I mean, they're not gonna They're
not going to catch up to Memphis overnight, but they
need to they need to do something there.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Well, I've noticed this, and this this is not just
you TSA, because I've had this conversation with people that
do what I do at other schools. So I think
this is from the National champions to the three hundred
and sixty third basketball team and I just saw today
where Smurf Millinder is going to go to Georgia next year,
and so Austin Kluanch is basically starting from scratch again.

(04:48):
I think the Gay Brothers are going to stick around,
but pretty much everybody else is going to leave. They
did get a guy from from San Antonio that transferred
back in after being in another school. But I think
basketball players have this unrealistic illusion that they should be
in the NBA today, whereas the majority of football players,
you got eighty five guys and eventually over one hundred

(05:10):
on a roster. Eighty of those eighty five of those
know that they're not even going to play in the
Arena League or the UFL. There's about twenty guys that
have a legitimate chance. The rest are Okay, yeah, I'm
gonna get some money, but I'll make that money in
my first three years of work. Whereas basketball, it's I'm
chasing the dream to the NBA. And plus there's one
hundred pro leagues in other places.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
In the country.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
So if they don't make the NBA or the G League,
they can go to Europe or Australia or the Far
East or wherever.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
I mean, look at Zay Fraser and the NFL Draft
that happened yeah last week, right, I mean, they can
find you at UTSA. And that's the thing that UTSA has, right,
Like we can showcase you almost better than what I mean,
we saw what Zakari did, right, he left Zakari Franklin

(06:00):
and he left for greener pastures and he didn't have
the same amount of production. Not good for him. He
was able to sign an undrafted free agent. But they'll
find you at UTSA, right. And each program has a
little bit of a niche of what they need to
aim for and how they find that value in getting
a good player. It boils down to roster management. It

(06:20):
just used to be about high school kids and stars
and rankings and you know how many JUCO kids you're
going to take. Now it's transfer portal. Everything is transfer portal,
and you have to be competitive in it because everybody
in the American is everybody in the American is doing it.
So I do think you're right. It's probably much harder

(06:43):
for men's basketball, and I think women's basketball it isn't
even as much of a factor there. So it just
kind of depends on what you're looking at. The thing
with the men's side is those guys are facing the
same challenges with the resources, and we saw some of
that come boil over the end of their season with
guys and promises and stuff, and you know, it's a

(07:05):
much smaller roster. There's more chance of impact there if
you could find one or two guys that can swing
the needle for you. So, yeah, everybody's doing it. Luckily,
for the utsa's football program, they have a really good
quarterback who they know who's going to stick here. They
have some really good skilled position players and it's just
a matter of filling in the pieces and being able

(07:26):
to compete. Like I said, you're never gonna get to
Memphis where the football team gets five million dollars, but
if you get half halfway there or more, at least
you're in the conversation to compete. And nowadays these guys
are they want to know how much they're going to
get before they even visit, and that's the reality of
what they're doing.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
I just saw a notice that RJ.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Leicster, cornerback from Oklahoma States coming to UTSA.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Yeah, so they actually lost a cornerback on the last
day one of the transfers there Anthony Tennis, and he's
got here in January and he's leaving the Michigan State
in April. That's the world we live in. He was
probably going to be a starter, so that was a
big blow. But here we are again Monday. They're able
to plug and play someone else from the portal. So

(08:14):
the portal takes and it gives. Right, you just got
to keep fighting the good fight, and and and try
to build those resources up.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Oscar Cardins, Elliott Davison and Joe Evans got undrafted free
agent d L CJ James, Jamal Nagan, Chris Carpenter and
Brandon Brown got camp invites think any of those guys
can stick?

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Man, Just I like all those guys right, Like, like
you look at them and they all have kind of
proto typical professional builds, like their stature. I really like.
I mean, obviously Joe Evans is the one, right, but
I really like Brandon Brown how.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
He I do too.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
I think he could be a Kevin Strong. Kevin Strong
played in the league ever since he left you and.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Brandon Price played a long time too.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Right, So I mean, to the point they're going to
find you. I think this may be the biggest number
of guys we see in mini camp. I don't know
that anybody tracks that, but just off my memory, that's
a pretty big group and I think most of them,
if not all of them, are going to end up sticking.
And you're talking about having what ten potential UTSA players

(09:25):
playing professional football out there, that's freaking awesome. Those are
the kind of things where you could really build and
showcase your program on.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
I said Brandon Price. I meant Brian Price. He's been
in the league for quite a while as well. All right,
seventeen weeks to football season, so you started getting ready.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
It's coming soon.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
I missed the spring game this year, but I understand
why we don't have them anymore.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, and hey, it turns out, you know, they didn't
have the spring game and they still ended up poaching
some of the roster guys. We'll see. They have these
summer workouts now, I think they're doing twice a week
go ta's and then media Day will be here in July,
and then it'll be here before we know it. So
I'm excited. We'll see how this. I think it's a

(10:08):
good schedule for Jeff. They still have a good team.
They should be among the top contenders in the AAC.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Yeah, I think they will be.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
I think they're going to be along with Tulane and Memphis,
and we'll say that the sleeper team is but I
think those are the three teams to.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Be Yep, I'd put utsa number four right up there.
Any one of those guys could take it.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
All right.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Well, see as soon as JJ, thanks for being around,
and we'll get everybody to go to Inside Roadbinder Sports
to sign up for the subscriptions and they'll be out
pretty soon.

Speaker 2 (10:36):

Speaker 1 (10:37):
All right, that's JJ Perez from Inside Roadwinner Sports.

Speaker 3 (10:41):

Speaker 1 (10:42):

get all the information, probably about the same time or
before I do, because he's pretty good at getting all
that stuff, all right. The couple other things Bill Belichick's
interview with CBS Morning News and Brandon I mean, the
general manager of the Buffalo Bills, amongst our topics.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Next, it's the Andy Everette Show on the Ticket
