Speaker 1 (00:02):
They react Monday to a big weekend of news and sports,
and maybe the biggest news is NBA on TNT. Don't
cry because it's over, Smile because it happened. Here was
Ernie Johnson signing off for one final time.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Several years ago, I wrote a book called Unscripted, and
I asked people to embrace the unscripted and not fear
the unscripted. If I had written the script, the NBA
and TNT would be together forever. It's not going to happen.
But while I was disappointed and I was sad, I
(00:43):
was I was not bitter. We know how business works.
Gratitude is the operative word for me. Grateful that you know,
since nineteen eighty nine, I've been with this company. No
matter what you call the company, I'll always be Turner,
(01:04):
and I'm grateful that I've worked with you guys. I'm
grateful for all of the relationships we've built professionally and personally.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
It's been a big love fest for the NBA on TNT.
Spurs fans will remember it for the Western Conference Finals.
They'll remember it for those crazy series against the Lakers.
I remember, as a Spurs fan, I wasn't super thrilled
when Shack joined just because of all of those fights
between the Spurs and Lakers and then the Spurs and Suns.
But he was a part of those teams and he
(01:37):
kind of ingratiated himself to me. I now think of
Shack as part of my NBA watching experience in a
lot of ways. I don't understand why people are acting
like it's the end of the road. I don't understand
why people are so emotionable about this, mostly because they're
not going anywhere. They're changing channels. It's going to go
from TNT on an NBA on TNC to now the
(02:01):
NBA on the ESPN. You're gonna see them next year.
Like this is the person who is weeping and crying
at the end of the school year. Oh, I'm gonna
miss my teachers. I'm gonna miss my friends. Relax. Three
months goes by like like so fast. You will be
back in school. You'll see your friends again. They'll lead
to be some summer camps. You're gonna see Charles Barkley
(02:23):
on Get Up. Every once in a while. You're gonna
see Shack on a Dutch a bunch of podcasts. Like
I don't understand Shane. Why people are so emotionable about
this thing. They're not going anywhere.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Me break it down for you why people are emotional
about it because you're You're right, They're not the show
and go off the air. It's just changing channels. It's
similar to like whenever, whenever you show Scrubs. Oh yeah,
it was on NBC for nine years, and then even
though it ended, ABC picked it up for an additional
in quote unquote spinoff ten season. We won't call that
it was it was awful. As I love that show.
(02:56):
I hated that last season.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
So here's and this is a good segue. Yeah, because
here's people are concerned about. And I understand now. I
talked to some of our friends in the building who
are big NBA guys, and they're concerned because they don't
like the ESPN NBA coverage. I'm most fans, those casual
fans are not fans of Kendrick Perkins or Steven Ay Smith,
and I get that, okay, But I will say this,
(03:19):
I am less concerned about Kendrick Perkins joining a desk
with Kenny the Jets Smith and Ernie Johnson or Steven A.
Smith interviewing Charles Barkley on first take. I'm less concerned
about that than I am of the programming. Now, this
is a little bit in the weeds, a little bit
in media weeds. So stick with me here, because, like
I said, if you care about ratings, I think you're
(03:39):
a loser. I don't. I don't think that you are.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
I just do.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
I think if you're somebody who is so concerned about
TV ratings that you're taking away from your viewer experience, you.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Unless direct unless it affects you directly.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
I know, honestly, some people.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
It affects them directly monetarily.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Those are the few of the few, most of us,
most sports fans, I don't care. I want to see
a good game. I don't Indiana and OKAYC is going
to be a great series. I don't care if you
know Johnny and Brooklyn isn't turning on the cable to
watch it. I want to see a good series here
in San Antonio, right. The thing I'm worried about here,
it is deep in the weeds here. If you've paid
(04:17):
attention to the NB on TNT, you notice that a
lot of their post games go very late into the night.
And it's because TNT is just running bones reruns and
Fast and Furious seven over and over. Okay, so they
can go late. It doesn't matter that Charles Barkley wants
to do a two and a half minute rant about
Pascal Siaka or about Wimby or whatever. Right, they have
(04:39):
a little bit more a leeway to go to do
what they want to do, whereas ESPN and more importantly
ABC do not. ABC you're hard timed out right. That
means you've got to get out by a certain time
for the local news. You're watching yep, you're watching the
NBA Finals. They have to wrap it up quick to
get to the news. They got to wrap it up
quick to get to the next live sporting event on ESPN. Now,
(05:02):
what happens when you have the inside the NBA guys
and they want to do a long rant or Shaq
has a lot of takes. Where does that go?
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Now?
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Luckily ESPN has kind of massaged a little bit. I
imagine that they're probably going to be on ESPN plus
a lot. I imagine they're going to be on ESPN
two a lot. But those live sporting events is what's
going to hurt inside the NBA. It's not going to
be because Mickey Mouse is in charge. It's not going
to be because Disney is the guys who are owning
the rights to Charles Kenny, EJ and Shack. Like, that's
(05:34):
not going to be the thing that hurts the show.
It's going to be the networks and these other live programming,
live sport events. But again, look, if you want to
shed a tear over your favorite TV show going off
the air, far be it from me to look at
you sideways. Like when Game of Thrones rolled up and ended,
I was a little bit emotional. I was a lowis set.
(05:56):
I was a little bit sad when my favorite TV
show went off the air. But it would be like,
like you said, I would be concerned the Scrubs a
vocation of it, Like you go to a Disney channel
and now all of a sudden, the show takes a
little bit of a hit. That would be what I'm
more concerned about than I am about not being able
to see these guys.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Another thing that happened is like, and this is the
first time that Disney or an ABC or like a
Disney affliate has bought a show. Okay, Scrubs was just
an example. They've also did that with Doug when he
was on Nickelodeon.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Was he was remember that.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
And the thing is, when you go to Disney, you
usually have a bigger budget, but a lot of times
the quality takes a dip. That's an issue a lot
of times whenever a show goes from another.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Network to them.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
And that's and that's probably another thing people are concerned
about it and other people are concerned about.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Honestly, is that.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
I think it just is like we as human beings
are just natural, uh, creatures of habit and so when
something changes like that, it's sort of like it's like
a like a shock to the membrane of hey, like
nothing is forever, and it kind of brings up the
concept of mortalityality.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Ye talk about getting dark on my mind.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
I just saying like that's just like it's a tiny thing,
but that it probably does strike some of the back
of the mind like, hey, this is ending.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
So in their mind they're like, oh my god, I'm
gonna end someday.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
That's and I know it's unfortunate to think that way,
but that does go through people's minds directly or indirectly.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Shane might be crazy inside the NBA doesn't remind me
that my parents are gonna die one day. That's that
is an insane overreaction.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
All right.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
When we come back, speaking of overreactions, are you superstitious,
there's a new Madden cover athlete. I'm gonna tell you
why you need to be worried next on the Andy
Every show on Sports Radio AM seven to sixty.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
