Speaker 1 (00:03):
This weekend. One of Major League Baseballs I think most
underrated players. Dave Parker passed away seventy four years old.
I believe he was part of the championship team in
seventy nine of the Pittsburgh Pirates, played right field. Had
an absolute cannon for an arm. There's a lot of
highlights you can google on YouTube or wherever you want
(00:23):
to search and just out defensive putouts or assists by
a right fielder and google day Parker. When you do that,
and you're going to see some amazing throws. There was
one in the All Star Game in nineteen seventy nine
where he gunned down the Angels catcher Brian Downing rounding third.
There's a couple others where he threw from almost the
(00:45):
warning track of a bullet to third base to get
a guy tagging up from second. And he was a
really good hitter. He was kind of the back then
they batted him usually second or third, usually third, with
Willie Stargell right behind him, which gave Stargel a ton
of action. And I guess he had been battling some
sickness the last few months, but a terrific player and
(01:09):
nicknamed the Cobra because of that gun. He hadn't on
his arm in right field and was able to take
out some base runners from time to time. But I
did not know that he was not in the Hall
of Fame. He was elected this past year by the
Veterans Committee, and unfortunately he did not make it to
the end of this month. I don't know if he
would have been physically able to go anyway, but did
(01:31):
not make it to the end of the month. He
will now be enshrined posthumously instead of in person.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
You how the Pirates chose to honor mister Parker?
Speaker 1 (01:40):
How did they?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
They swept the Mets over the weekend all three games
by the back of my score of thirty to four.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
What was the combined score?
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Thirty three zero to four, Okay, And that's how they
honored him.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Essentially, Well, the Pirates teams. Unfortunately, Pirates ownership basically since
the post Barry Bonds days, has not tried to win.
And it's basically come down to they don't want to
spend the money, they'd rather just put it in their pocket.
But they've had some great history in the past and
he was part of that. It's the Andy Everage Show.
