of all kinds of good stuff that we have got
(00:42):
ready for you for today, and we will get it
all going here shortly. Our audio disseminators today are tayso Checking,
of course, the producer of this program. That's Michael Bartlett.
The New York Knicks had that game in the bag
last night and then they did not, And what a
comeback for the That'll be one of our main topics
of the day. I've got a lot of things and
(01:04):
thoughts on all of that. But Tyrese Haliburton with a
shot that bounced up as high as the shot clock
and then came down softly to tie the game and
send it to overtime and Indiana steals game one from
New York. That was awesome to see.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
I mean, I've seen all the different variations of the stats.
It's like teams that were down by so many points
with two minutes left were oh and a thousand, you.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Know, basically twelve. It just never happened before. Yeah, it
just it. It didn't happen before.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
And then there was one where it was like this
has happened three three teams or it was three in
whatever a thousand, and those three were this year and
they were all Pacers.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
I've been a lot I've watched a lot of basketball
in about fifty six years or so watching games, and
the one thing that I always look at when teams
lose leads like York did last night. We'll talk about
this a little bit more here in the next segment,
but basically New York in the last three minutes of
the game played not to lose the things that got
them that double digit lead, that got them into the teens.
(02:12):
I think they had a sixteen point lead at one point.
They stopped doing that. And when you stop doing what
you've been really good at, and I know it's human
nature to try to pull the reins back and play safe.
You get out of a rhythm, you turn the ball over,
you miss free throws, and then if somebody gets hot,
you're in trouble. We'll get to the news of all
(02:32):
of that coming up here in a little bit. Entertaining
game last night. Loved to see the Pacers come back,
and we'll get into all of that. Plus the Reggie
Miller tyrese Haliburton choke sign that he reinvented from however
many years ago. That was all right. The sports commission
that was discussed earlier this week that the NCAA was
(02:55):
thinking about doing is on hold, and I think it's
mainly on hold because Dick Saban said, we don't need
a sports commission. We need legislation, We need rules, and
we need the government to back up those rules. We'll
get into that coming up in a little bit. College
football is going to have a different look with a
twelve team playoff this year. Again, no longer are you
(03:16):
going to be guaranteed a top four seed if you
win your league. I'm okay with that part of it,
but they showed a we have a bracket here of
what the football tournament would have looked like this past
season if they were doing it under the new formatic
(03:38):
proceeding plane. So last year in twenty four, the old seed,
the top four seeds were Oregon won, Georgia two, Boise
State three in Arizona State was four. Under the new plan,
Oregon would still be number one, Georgia would still be
(03:58):
number two, but three and four would have been Texas
and Penn State because.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
That's where they finished in the in the actual rank rankings.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Now, if you look at five through through twelve, last year,
Clemson was twelve and they played five Notre Dame. The
five to twelve matchup this year would have been Indiana
Notre Dame at Notre Dame to start the Boise State
Indiana eight nine matchup. You're getting those backwards, Well, a
nine to eight matchup, Well, that's what it would have
(04:26):
been this year. Yeah. The nine eight matchup last year
was Tennessee Ohio State, correct, Yeah, And the eleven eight
this past season was SMU and Penn State. That would
have been eleven six. That would have been Arizona State,
Ohio State this year and SMU and Tennessee would have
(04:47):
played the ten to seven matchup instead of Indiana Notre Dame.
I got a lot of thoughts on this, but my
main thing is is I'm okay with if you win
your conference you don't get a bye. But if you
win your conference, I think you should finish no worse
than the eighth seed so that you get to host
a home have a home field advantage in the first round,
and that would give the group of five schools a chance.
(05:08):
The reason that Boise State got to buy and they
got to host SMU and they got to host the
eleven six matchup this past year. I don't think Boise
State has a chance to go on the road and
beat a big boy they have even though they don't
they didn't they have a choice, they do have a chance.
I think that when they're playing at home. UTSA, for example,
(05:30):
is twenty nine to three in the Alamo Dome and
the Jeff Trailer era. If they had to play a
power five school, power four school, they had much rather
do it at the Dome to where they would have
a chance. And if they're ever good enough to get
into this tournament you want if you win your league,
I think you should get into the I think you
should get into a home field advantage in the first
round top eight at worse.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, like under the new format, they would have played
Indiana at home, or they would have played Indiana at Indiana.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
I could have seen them win that one.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
But I'm under the notion of if you win your conference,
if you win your division, you should be rewarded, regardless
of if it's a crappy division or whatever. You can
only play the games that are on your schedule, and
regardless of if you wind up being the twelfth the
twelfth team in the country, you should still be allowed
(06:26):
and granted your least one home game.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Winning your conference needs to matter. I think the other
thing to look at here is that Notre Dame doesn't
necessarily get guaranteed a top four spot just because they're
Notre Dame. But I don't think they should not be
given a top four spot if they've earned it based
on a twelve to zero record, or maybe they were
(06:51):
eleven to one and lost to the number one team.
I think Notre Dame should get in the top four
on merit, not on name, and I don't think they
should be excluded from the top just because they're not
in a conference. If Notre Dame is deserving of a
top four seed, then they should get that. So we'll
get into that coming up here in a little bit
as well. UTSA made it a big announcement today they're
going to put tickets on sale this week for the
(07:13):
Texas State game. In fact, it started today. The Texas
State game is in week two. I believe that is
the seventh of September this year that my dates lined
up here. But the Texas State game, they're trying to
break a record. The opening game that UTSA first played
back in twenty eleven drew fifty six seven forty three.
They want to break that record. They want fifty six
(07:34):
to seven forty four or more in the Alamodome for
that game. That would be an epic UTSA Texas State
game if this can get pulled off. And when I
get back in a couple of weeks, we'll have least
a compos on she's out on a personal business this week,
and doctor compos and doctor compos of course, and and Brad.
(07:56):
The other people at UTSA are at baseball, which unfortunately
lost today. But we'll get into this and what the
goal is gonna be and how we're gonna get the
word out to buy tickets to go watch UTSA in
Texas State the first game after UTSA plays Texas A
and M to open the season.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
And that's why I think that you have a legitimate
shot to break that record, because after you beat little Brother, everybody.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Ten thousand, everybody's gonna be on the kool aid.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
They're gonna be like, Hey and Andy everg Mike Bartley
know where they're talking about, just saying.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Well, you have more confidence in that than Jeff Taylor does.
I do. You want to know why track record? Jeff
Traylor is a winner.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
You know what Texas A and M is not a
winner every single year.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
It's it's all well, Texas A and M is making
making the step. They're gonna be competitive in the SEC.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Jim bow Fisher when he got off the plane, Oh yeah,
we already have the conference championship. We already have the
national championship ready to go.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Yeah, that was the bus I have. I have not
gotten into my football mode yet to determine how good
Texas A and M is gonna be. But questionably, if
UTSA were to beat them, it would be it would
rank number one on the list of wins in their history.
We'll get into that more later on. All right. I
got a stat of the day to share with you
a little bit later, but you're gonna have to wait
for that. Jake Retzloff is the starting quarterback for BYU,
(09:16):
and he is being sued in Utah for sexual assault
of a lady in Utah that happened a year or
so ago. And what the police told this lady. If
this is true, the whole police department should just go
away and they need to get new ones in there,
because apparently one of the police officers told her not
(09:37):
to pursue this because she would not get justice. I
think that's just any police officer. And I'm certainly not
going to go in the not defunding the police or
any of that nonsense. But anybody that says don't report
a crime, don't accuse somebody of something that they did.
And we don't know if he did it, because I'm
going to take both sides of this story coming up
(09:58):
in the five o'clock hour. But the other thing that's
not being talked about here, and I'm kind of shocked
about this, is BYU has a really strict what they
call honor code, and one of the things in the
honor Code is you will not have premarital sex. And
apparently that's happened. I think that's been agreed that that happened,
(10:19):
and I'm surprised that Jake Retslof is the starting quarterback
right now without at least a game or two suspension. Well, again,
all of this is allegedly, Well, the rape part, he
should be in jail and not never play football again
if that's accurate, and that's proven to be true. But allegedly, well, no,
it's alleged. If it's proven in court that he is
guilty of that crime, he should go to jail. But
(10:42):
the part that I am throwing out I'm talking about
is I do believe that this act did occur, and
I think both parties are agreeing that this act occurred,
and one is saying it was consensual and one was
saying that it was not. U TSA played basketball ten
twelve years ago at Brigham Young and we were on
the bus going from the from UTSA out to the
(11:05):
airport and it was on this trip that one of
their best players. I don't remember who the player was,
it was probably twenty thirteen fourteen, somewhe around there, but
their best player had been suspended for a handful of
games for pre marital relations, and the players were a
little bit excited that the team was going to be
less potent than it was. They still won by twenty
(11:26):
five or whatever it was. They were really good, but
basically they were surprised at BYU had that stance. They
weren't really educated in the rules that BYU has. One
of the surprising parts of all of this is where
the administration hasn't stepped in and says, so you had
premridal relations, why are you not suspended for a couple
of games. So we'll get into that conversation coming up
(11:49):
when we have time. In the five o'clock hour. We've
got the Reggie Miller story from last night, as he
was definitely a part of the broadcast. But you know what,
I liked what Reggie Miller said one of my favorite
lines forever. Late in the game, there was a play
on the sideline where the ball got deflected out of
bounds and they went to the replay and it was
Brunson that knocked it out. Yes, and Reggie said, coach,
(12:11):
thank god, this wasn't around when I was playing. I'm like, Amen,
it's humans making humans and referees making human mistakes, and
where now all the video world. I understand there's times
when I want video replay pretty much when it's benefiting
my team, but there is also a part of me
that wishes that we would just get rid of it
(12:33):
all and just let the humans err as they as
they air. Well.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
There was also a play in that game in the
fourth quarter, I believe, where the ball was going out
of bounds. It was deflected and Tyree's Halliburton was trying
to run towards it and could have made a play
on the ball, but actor John Ham grabbed it before
Tyre's Halliburton could get to it, and Reggie's like, I mean,
(12:57):
if you're a.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Nick fan, you got to make sure you're helping up
the thing.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
So Reggie did a tremendous job of staying as neutral
as possible.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
But you know he was celebrating big time last night.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Oh yeah, But and I love Kevin Harland. Kevin Harland
is one of the best guys. But man, Kevin Harland
was letting his Knicks fandom show last night quite a bout.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
See that that's the subjective part of listening to a broadcast.
I thought Kevin Harland was straight down the middle with
every call. When the Knicks did something great, he was
all over that. When Indiana did something great, he was
on top of that.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
And everybody is going to hear, or see or think
of something different, because, honestly, I don't care who wins
this series. I do. I want Oklahoma City to win
the West. I want to see Shay. I want to
see that team, that city, that organization win a championship.
It's a clone of what the Spurs are currently doing
right now, and hopefully the Spurs follow in those footsteps
(13:51):
as Oklahoma City has been following in theirs. So I
want Oklahoma City to win the West. I don't care
who wins the East. I just want to see good basketball,
and we saw good basketball last night.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Can we claim if Oklahoma City wins the whole thing,
can we claim it as one of our own?
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Well? Well, Sam Presty's basically claim Somewhere in some deep,
deep secret vaults somewhere, there's a script on how you
create a basketball team that was designed in San Antonio
about thirty years ago. And Sam Presty's running that script
to a tee and he'll probably I don't know if
he'll publicly do it or not, but in some situations
he'd probably talk about the two leads he had here
(14:31):
on what he's trying to do there. The key word
is patients. Fans are not patient, media is not patient.
Talk show hosts are not patient. We want to see
a trade every other day to make sure you're really
doing your job. Look at that Oklahoma City roster. You
got Shay, you that you traded for when he wasn't Shay,
and you got Homegren who you drafted with the first pick,
(14:51):
and everybody else is homegrown and developed and they're playing
really really well. Hartstein, I guess was a late trade
last year, but that was only because the Balls did
want him, all right, Nick Nixon Nix didn want him. Yeah,
and that well, who was it that they traded was
the Cruso Josh Josh Giddy? Was the Cruso trade? Yeah?
All right, let's get to the NBA last night and
(15:12):
the Pacers and the Knicks and all that kind of
stuff coming up. It's four sixteen. It's the Andy Everatge Show.
On the ticket
