Speaker 1 (00:03):
Here we go into our number three of the show,
just after six o'clock on this Thursday night. The big
story today in sports is the Oklahoma City Thunder and
the ownership group up there, led by Clay Bennett, is
spending money like it's going out of style. Just a
couple of weeks ago, it was Shay Gilges Alexander who

(00:25):
signed a huge contract for the Max. He's going to
beginning four years in two hundred and eighty five million
dollars starting in twenty seven twenty eight. And then Chet
Holmgren signed for five years in two hundred and fifty
million dollars. And today they got the signature of one
jab Jalen Williams, who will after this next season talk

(00:49):
about going into a different tax bracket. I guess it's
all the same now, because I think the marginal tax
rate caps off at thirty seven percent. I think Oklahoma,
the state of Oklahoma, is a two or three percent
sales or income tax. But next year JDub only makes
and I put only in air quotes six point five
million before after that his salary kicks up to fifty

(01:13):
seven million. He's getting a fifty one million dollar raise
between this time this year and this time next year, he's.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Gonna have to get financial advice from latrell' spreewell to
figure out how he's gonna pay.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
You know, he can get financial advice from me right
now for a lot less than most people will charge him.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, all Amy's gonna charge is just a round a
round of golf at Augusta.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
That's it. No, I want at least one percent. No,
you don't. I'll be greedy, and I'm gonna be greedy.
I can be greedy. I mean one percent of fifty
million is what, well, ten percent, five? So one percent,
five hundred thousand, I can I can tell him what
to invest in for five hundred gred It may not
work out, but I can tell him to be like

(02:00):
Ace Bailey's agent at that point. Well, if everybody else
is on the payroll, why not me? All right? So,
but here is the kicker for this and why this
is important because this year, with the players that are
currently on the roster for the Thunder, and they have
thirteen players on the payroll right now, they are going

(02:23):
to be making one hundred and seventy two million, five
hundred and ninety five thousand dollars it's about eighteen million
dollars maybe seventeen million dollars over the salary cap. But
they have not reached the first apron of the luxury
tax yet. So they're they're gonna be okay, and they're
gonna be one of the favorites next year to win
another championship. But this time next summer when they start

(02:44):
planning for twenty six twenty seven with shay a salary
bumping up to forty point one before it goes to
sixty three the following year. And you have the fact
that you're getting home good at forty nine and Jaw
fifty seven, and you already have Hartenstein and Dort making
almost forty together. You are going to have a whopping

(03:08):
two hundred and fifty six million dollar payroll come twenty six,
twenty seven start of the season, if no other roster
moves are made.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
And if I could whistle properly, I would whistle and
just go whoo.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
That is a lot of money. So we saw after
this year. See Boston won the championship in twenty four,
they did not repeat in twenty five, and they had
a fire sale this summer and they got rid of
porzingis and they told Al Horford, we're not going to
resign you. And they know that they're going to have

(03:42):
Jason Tatum with dead money for a while, and they
got rid of Jirou Holiday. Next year, there's a really
good chance that Isaiah Hartenstein and Lougan And said Dort
will have to be moved, or Chad Holmgen would have
to be moved, or Alex Caruso, because hart and Sign's
gonna make twenty eight five next year, Dort seventeen to seven,

(04:04):
Isaiah Joe's gonna make eleven three, and Aaron Wiggins and
is eight and a half in Caruso's nineteen and a half.
Wallace and Ken Kenrich Williams will be still on introductory contracts.
They can probably keep them around as low end players,
but you gotta pay. You still have to fill out

(04:25):
your roster. But come next year, when we get ready
for the twenty six twenty seven season, the triumphrate of
Shay Gilgis, Alexander chet Holngren and Jalen Williams will be
making one hundred and forty seven million dollars just those
three players.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
What's that saying that the bell will come toll or
the bill will come toll something like that.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
You have to pay the piper at some point. Yes, yeah.
But and the reason I bring this up and the
reason we talk about the thunder because other teams are
going to be in a similar vote in the future teams.
One of those teams would be your San Antonio Spurs,
because right now the UH and the Spurs signed. The
did make an announcement yesterday they signed McLoughlin, right, yeah,

(05:13):
Jordan McLoughlin. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
They they're bringing back Jordan McLaughlin on a one year deal.
I think it's for the veterans. It's three million dollars. Yeah,
he was part of the Aaron Fox. Uh, the H
the Spurs next year will have a payroll.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Let me get the numbers in here, all the zeros
their payroll with now they have thirteen players on the
roster Fox v cel kJ Harper, Bryant, Barnes, Wimby Castle
Sohn Uh.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
And they don't have him anymore. Gonna take then Champagne.
Actually they don't have they. They're gonna be okay, They're
gonna be okay. Next year they don't have they. They
So here's their roster.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Fox Vissel Kilden Johnson, Harper, Bryant, Barnes, wimben Yama Castle,
so hand they got a linic.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
What do do we know? What a Linux numbers are?
What's his salary? Oh that's a good question. If you
had not asked me, I probably could have told you
I will go look at that.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
We'll look up that. But they have a payroll coming
up next year of around one hundred and sixty five
million dollars. It's it's actually going to be a closer
to one seventy. When you throw in a Linux money,
I believe it's like it's a one. I want to say,
it's like a one year deal, like thirteen point five.
If I'm not.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Mistaken, thirteen five. We'll go with that. So the the
U thirteen million, five hundred thousand, I believe it's like
thirteen five some something along those lines. So the Spurs
will be in the one seventy five range, one seventy
seven again over the cap, but they're signing their own
players twelve point eight. Sorry, you know it's twelve point eight.

(06:53):
Now twelve Well you just you just save me seven
hundred thousand dollars.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Well, hey, there you go, man. So one seventy six seven.
It is what I have roughly for what the Spurs
payroll will be next year. However, they will have to
after next year. So next year is a good year
for the Spurs to make a nice little run. And
even after next year, with the players that they have

(07:17):
on the roster, they're only going to be around one
hundred and sixty because they lose the Harrison Barnes contract
of nineteen million dollars and they have to make a
decision on the so hand and if old Inich is
going to be extended, and if they want to sign
any other players. But right now, the Spurs, I believe,
have thirteen players signed two contracts. The fourteenth and fifteenth

(07:42):
players will either be g leaguers or two way contracts
for the most part going with the rest of unless
they make another trade, this is kind of what that
roster is going to look like. However, we do know
that the Aaron Fox is likely to be re signed
in the fifty seven million dollar range going forward, and
we are two years away from Victor wimbin Yama being

(08:05):
signed at sixty five, and we are probably also three
years away from trying to figure out what we're going
to pay Steph Castle. That would not take place until
twenty eight to twenty nine, but the Spurs are going
to be creeping close to that one eighty five one
ninety second apron here at some point, however, they may
be a little bit better off than others would be.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Again, I said this the other day, current Brian Wright president,
Brian Wright, President, Mike Bartlett.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
We're fine.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
That's a problem for future Mike Bartlett and future Brian
Wright at this point. Let's just worry about what we
have right now and the other thing will be as obviously,
the salary cap is going to go up. And it's
not that organizations necessarily don't want to go into those
first or second aprons, it's you can go into it once.

(09:01):
When you start staying in that second apron for multi
for consecutive years, that's when the penalties really start to
hit more and more with the taxes and then the
potential of draft picks getting.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Lowt the fact that the Spurs for the next couple
of years, Fox is going to be their highest paid
player at fifty seven million after he gets his his extension,
and that would take place starting next year, so they'd
only be at one hundred and sixty million, But they're
going to have to either replace or resign Harrison Barnes.
They're going to have to replace her, do the same

(09:34):
thing for Jeremy Sohan and Olenic, and then there's going
to still need a thirteenth player, which right now is McLoughlin.
So they would be at one.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
Sixty before they figure out what they're going to do
with those remaining roster spots.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
We forgot about We forgot about Luke Cornett. No, I
have him in here. You had ten million. Yeah, he's
at ten and a half million or thereabouts for so
he's in the mix, and he's signed up through twenty
eight twenty nine. But this is the reason why you
don't go sign Kevin to Rant and extend him. This
is the reason why you don't go after Giannis and
keep his fifty and sixty million dollars pay rolls on

(10:09):
the team, because you're gonna pay pay Fox first, you're
gonna pay Wimby second, and you're gonna pay Castle third.
And the Spurs are not going to be in that
second apron until twenty eight to twenty nine, So you
still have three years to go before you have to
worry about jettising your players. And you've got incredibly talented
players in Fox, Wimby and Castle, and the ceiling is

(10:32):
completely and I think Vessell's a good player. And you've
got really high players in Harper and Bryant to be
on your team, and you really and and this is
the language that we use in sports. You're paying them nothing. Now,
thirteen million dollars. Most of us would sign up for
that right now. But in the terms of the sports world,
you're paying them nothing. You're only paying Fox, and next

(10:54):
year you're only gonna and two years you're only gonna
pay be paying Wimby, and in three years you're gonna
be paying all three of them. So it's the summer
of twenty eight that you have to start worrying about
if you're going to have to trade players or not.
And the and the Spurs are in a much better
situation than a lot of teams will be. Yeah, you
heard the Cronkeys a few weeks ago talking about needing
to potentially move off of Jokic if they have injuries

(11:18):
or they can't sign players to build around him. And
he's not going to sign his contract extension until next
year because he can get an extra seventy seven million
dollars if he waits a year, which that way he
gets to evaluate his situation even further if he wants to.
So the Spurs are in really good shape this next
year at one hundred and seventy six, and they'll be

(11:39):
in the one eighty range after they sign the remaining
players again next year, those that are going off of
contracts like Barnes and so In and Olyntic, and then
they can start to worry about that twenty eight to
twenty nine seasons as the time that they need to
possibly make some changes if they've got three guys that
are making way too much.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
Well, you know, again, this is future Michael Dell, future
Peter J. Holt, and future Brian Wright's issue. If nothing else,
if they want to stay and to pay a bunch
of the out of the luxury tax, you know, just
raise the price on some of the Dell technology, Dell computers,
raise some of the prices on.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
That has zero to do. See that's the problem here. Okay,
let me Okay, we're at the break, So you just
gave me another topic that we'll discuss next. It's six thirteen.
It's the Andy everage show on the ticket
