Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah. I mean, I gotta have something to watch on
the weekends when there's no football to watch and football
seasons pretty much winding down.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I give hockey a try. Stars are good this year.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
I need to go to I.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
I don't know, I don't know. I can't do hockey.
I've tried.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I like how you tried for a split second.
Speaker 4 (00:18):
Then you're you're like Al Michael's talking about eating vegetables.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Like exactly, Al and I are on the same boat too.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I know this is just gonna be bad. I'll stop
you there.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yeah, it's it's it's not gonna work out.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
But but Tiger was at his press conference this week
on Tuesday and talking about all kinds of stuff and
playing a bunch of tournaments that he's not going to
play in and all that kind of stuff. But it's
it's pretty cool to see golf in uh in the Bahamas.
It's sunny and nice weather over there. I'm curious is
that they were showing a lot of Jordan's speed highlights
(00:53):
and the first round is over. I'm gonna pull up
the leaderboard here in a second, as soon as I
can get to it. But I wonder if he's ready
to have a better year. I think there's a lot
of people that would like to see him return to glory,
but I'm not so sure. He's too stubborn to fix
a few flaws in the golf swing.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
Yeah, what has been I mean, obviously you could probably
give me a half hour seminar on what the problem is.
But just to go from the heights that he achieved
so early in his career to now, you know, I'm
checking the cut line at majors.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
I'll tell you what the instructors that are on the
Golf Show and others that follow golf and know this.
Jordan Speith, when he was six feet tall in one
hundred and sixty pounds and swung the club one hundred
and seven one hundred and eight miles an hour, had
a very very weak grip and a finger that kind
of stuck out that's kind of awkward, and it's a
(01:49):
grip that worked for him so he could control the
ball and he didn't hit it very far. And so
what he won at US Opening fifteen and he woned
Birkdale and he had a grip and a swing that's
somewhat matched. And as he matured a little bit and
got in the gym and got faster and now swings
(02:09):
one fifteen to one eighteen and hits it further. He's
got a grip that's so weak that he doesn't know
whether it's going right or left, and it's all over
the place, and he or Cam McCormick, his coach, refused
to change the grip. And almost every instructor that I
have had a conversation with about this on our Saturday show.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Guests that I've had on this show say.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
If he would just fix the grip and get it
to be where it's a little bit more neutral or stronger,
that those problems would go away. And when you struggle
to hit greens, and no matter how good of a
short game you have, you start the panic when you
get on the greens because now you've got to make putts,
and then you miss the four footers that were pretty
simple because you're confident that you can hit the ball
(02:52):
wherever you're trying to hit it. But when you hit
it and it goes all over the place, now you
put more pressure on your short game. And I don't
think Jordan's short game has had an issue at all.
I think it's still very good. But he misses some
four footers he didn't used to make because well, I
got to make this one because I don't know if
I can hit the next fairway or not. And to me,
that's a pretty simple fix. But either his coach or
(03:13):
him or and listen, the golf grip is the most
uncomfortable thing you've ever done unless you do it right.
And so if you ever start to learn the game,
learn how to grip the golf club. They have these
molded grips at golf sturs. Scottie Scheffler still practices with
the first thirty balls he hits for every session, whether
he's practicing or warming up, he hits thirty golf balls
(03:35):
with a club that is you know, you can't use
it on the golf course because it's a molded grip
and you can find them in any golf stour. And
he he has a seven or eight iron that he
has that grip on and he gets as much hand
memory as he can with the grip and then he
goes to the rest of his bag for his warm
up or his practice session. And if you watch him
play golf, he is always, always, always checking the grip
(03:56):
and when he gets into his stance, and for lack
of a better word, most instructors think Jordan's grip sucks.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Well.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
As much as I want to see Jordan Speith competing
for majors again, there's nothing more exciting than watching him
zigzag down a hole and end up parring when he
should have had a double bogie.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Well back in twenty seventeen, when he did that and
it took thirty minutes to play the one hole en
route to winning the Open, he still could cut. He
still would hit a foul ball occasionally, but it wasn't
nearly as much. But now he drives it three twenty
instead of two ninety five or two ninety And for
a PGA Tour pro, that's a lot of difference and
a lot of clubhead speed, and if you don't have
(04:39):
the grip to keep up with it, it's going to go
all over the ballpark and it's gonna you're not gonna
be able to recover as quickly. All right, five o'clock hour.
College football stuff coming up next, It's the Andy Everage
