Just hit that big red microphone icon at Ticket seven
sixty dot com on the iheartapp Enjoy this podcast of
the Indie Everage Show. It's Draft Day Thursday, as we
commenced the Indie Average Show just after four o'clock on
the next to the last day of the week. Welcome
to the program. Thank you for being a part of it.
And there's all kinds of rumors going around the NFL
(00:50):
right now as to what may or may not happen
before and after seven o'clock this evening Central time, when
the draft commences in just over three hours, the Tennessee
Titans will be on the clock. They're likely to take
cam Ward and then it's going to be chaos the
rest of the way from there, or so it seems,
if you believe any of the discussion and rumors that
(01:11):
are out there today. I Am and Everett are technical
directors and audio deesseminators today. One is ty Sucik. He's
going to be with us for a little bit. And
the producer role, Mike's in a meeting right now. And
I don't know why they scheduled a meeting at four o'clock,
but apparently they did. He says it shouldn't take long
famous last words. But we'll see how long he's but
(01:32):
he'll be along for the ride here.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
In just a second.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
But it's great that Tye is here today because he's
rocking his Cleveland Brown's gear and he's got the Cleveland
Browns logo on there.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
And we've been talking.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
For Tye also produced the golf show for me last week,
so we've been talking for a week on this that
it looks like that they can't Miss pick is going
to be Travis Hunter. But now we're hearing rumors that
the Cleveland Browns may want to trade down if the
offer is juicy enough, and get somebody else a wide
(02:04):
receiver and maybe get more Picks. As a Browns fan,
how do you think, how are you rocking with that right.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Now, I'm not a fan of the trade down, truth
be told, stay at two. I'm okay with the trade
back in if you level quarterback back in later in
the draft, But I think trading back does nothing for
this team because remember they're not too far removed from
a playoff birth. So I think there's some pieces in
Cleveland that could really work, and Travis Hunter is definitely
(02:33):
gonna be a key piece.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
See, I think Cleveland's on the two and a half
year playing right now, and I think you have to
build your team. First of all, the Baltimore Ravens aren't
going anywhere in that division. They're still the best team.
And Pittsburgh never ceases to It makes me how they
pull rabbits out of the hat because of the direction
and the culture that Mike Tomlin has. And if they
ever fixed quarterback, and we'll talk about what they may
(02:56):
do here in a little bit, if they ever get
a Ben roths Burger type quarterback around what talent they
have now, then I think Pittsburgh is almost as good
as Baltimore. And then you've got the wildcard with Joe
Burrow And is their defense going to be good enough?
Speaker 2 (03:11):
And is the offense going to stay healthy.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
If they stay healthy, and they get their running back
that they need and probably an offensive wineman for the Bengals.
So cyclically, those teams are going to cycle out of
the playoff picture over the next three years.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
That's what always happens.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Baltimore may be the wildcard in that because it's an
organization that is so well run that they figure out
ways around it to at least when they're not winning divisions,
they're winning wildcards. And they've got a really good coach
and John Harbaugh who doesn't get near the publicity that
his brother does. That does, but I think John's just
as good. So I look at Cleveland as you've got
a draft this year and then after next year. About
(03:48):
midway through the twenty twenty sixth season is when the
Browns could be a ten to eleven win team and
be a playoff team again.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
And in order to do that, you've got to address you.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Don't have a great quarterback right now, and I think
a lot of teams are going to take what they
perceive to be a project at quarterback that might be
see brock Perty was the last pick in the draft,
but maybe the next Dak Prescott.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Let's go there.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
So whether it's Jalen Milroe, whether it's Dylan Gabriel, maybe
it's Quinn Yours late in the second round or maybe
even the third round, maybe you can get the quarterback
with Flacco and I don't think you can count on
to Shaun Watson, but with Laco, I think you can
manage the season. DeShawn Watson says he's going to use
all the distractions from the past couple of years to
(04:33):
show people how good he is.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
I don't question his talent.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Deshaun Watson's always had really good talent, but the question
is is going to step in that huddle and be
the leader that the quarterback position needs to be.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
So to me, you do not pass on the.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Athleticism and the what I think is the best athlete
slash player in the draft, and that's Travis Hunter. Now,
I also think that Travis Hunter wants to play both positions.
Doug had a conversation about this earlier.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
The rumor out there.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Travis Hunter says, I'm a fisherman.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
I get up early and I stay up late.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Well, that's great, but so does if you're not in
the defensive team meeting when the offensive team meeting is
going on, or you're not in the wide receiver meeting
when the cornerback meeting is going on, then somewhere along
the way you're you're missing things. I would put Travis
Hunter if it makes him feel good to say wide receiver.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Quarterback, that would be fine.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
But he's wide receiver first, and I would only play
him on defense in nickel and dine packages where you
have multiple defensive backs and you're playing in zone, so
that he can where he where he shines the most
is reading quarterbacks, almost like a hybrid between safety and corner.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Not that he can't.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Guard somebody that you can incredibly fast, but I think
he's better off reading reading offenses as a nickelback.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Or in the din package.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
But he's too good of a wide receiver not to
have him in on almost every snap on offense.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
So I'm with you. I don't mess with this.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
I don't care what they're giving me right now unless
it's unless it's really really juicy. I got to go
with Travis Hunter.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
I agree.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Unless we're talking two future first, maybe you know I'll
probably still shake my head at it. Knowing that Travis
Hunter is sitting there. I'd be more okay with that,
But like you said, this team needs a receiver. Travis
Hunter fits that build and just much like how the
edge position evolved over the years, where it was just
like a third down pass rusher, now it's an lead position,
Travis Hunter has that chance to do that with the
(06:31):
I would call it a safety position where he would
be a third down safety or deep back safety where
you can just drop him back there at free safety.
Read a kid's eyes.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
He's going to be quick enough to go to go
find the ball and make picks. He's he's savvy around
the ball to get deflections, those kind.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Of things exactly.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
I don't know how they did it at Colorado, but
in the pros, the meetings and the scheduling and all
that is, he ramped up even further. And I don't
care how early you get up. The meetings are usually
at the same time. The cornerbacks and the white receive
are all meeting at the same time. They're just in
different rooms and looking at different film. I think he's
an incredible athlete, and then there's certain situations where he
(07:09):
can play on defense, but I am I'm putting him
on offense first and foremost, so We've got a lot
of draft stuff to get to. We'll touch on that
again coming up. I got a ton of thoughts on that.
Looks like there's other teams that may want to make trades.
Jacksonville is thinking about genty. Now I think that's a
mistake for them. They've got more infrastructure that they need
(07:30):
to build. The Raiders are staying coy as to what
they want to do. A lot of people think that
they might want to go after genty, But then Pete
Carroll likes defense and likes cornerbacks and likes to be
able to control the team defensively. We'll get into that
situation as well. We had some more NBA basketball last night.
Boston goes up to oh Cleveland up to oh The
(07:50):
Warriors series with the Rockets just took a different turn. Now,
I predicted the Warriors would win this and after Game one,
I felt like I was in pretty good shape. And
not that I I don't think that Houston is a
decent team, But at some point Houston's going to realize
that they're a young team and they've never been in
this position before, and it's going to be really important
for them to overcome that inexperience. I don't think it
(08:14):
really matters because, well, it's going to be really interesting.
The two seed is going to the two seven winner
is going to play the three to six winner, which
could be Minnesota or the Lakers, and that series could
be pretty cool as well, pretty good, pretty competitive. But
I'm looking at this right now is if Jimmy Butler
is out for an extended period of time, and I
(08:36):
would say any game Jimmy Butler does not play in,
the Warriors are going to lose.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
He is too. They are very very thin.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
I was watching last night when Butler went out and
they had to put Kaminga in and he hadn't played
in forever.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
He looked rusty. He didn't look like you remembered all
the plays.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
But I think stan Van Gundy made this comment, there's
no scoring on the floor right now. For Golden State,
Steph was out and Butler was out, and they were
playing with the backups and there wasn't a guy even
by Buddy Healed was probably their best offensive player on
the field on the court at that time. And I
see this from time to time when coaches are making
(09:12):
rotational changes. Sometimes they'll have a lineup and then maybe
twenty seconds after they made a change, they make another one.
And when you have a full array of players, sometimes
you oversub and then you realize and look at who's
scoring in this offense. We're going to run a play,
but who are we running a play for. Normally we'd
run a play for Butler or Curry or maybe even
(09:34):
something that is initiated by Draymond Green.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
But none of those guys are on the floor right now.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
So if we run the same play that we run
for them, is it going to work with the second
tier players? Likely not, And so very seldom in this
series will you see Butler and Curry not both playing
at the same time unless both are injured. And this
is going to be something that is going to I
think also, we have not heard yet what the exact
end he is on Butler, it looked like he landed
(10:01):
right on his tailbone, which can be incredibly painful. Uh,
and you're probably you know, sitting on a pillow for
a few days because you're your muscles back there are
really really sore. But if the doctors say there's no
structural damage, you're just gonna have to tough it out
or not tough it out, then we're gonna see what
kind of a player Jimmy Butler is.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
It's playoff time. Here's the question.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Jimmy Butler needs to ask himself if Kobe Bryant had
the same injury I had, what he play or sit?
And if he would sit, then we know he's legitimately hurt.
And if Kobe Bryant would play, it's up to you
to either do that or just mail in this series
because you're not. You don't have enough scoring and you
don't have enough firepower. If if you're gonna sit on
the bench with Butler, he's got to play, and he's
(10:44):
He and Steph have to get at least seventy five if.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Not more than that between the two of them.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
I agree he has to play for them to win.
I see him sitting out the next game just for
Golden State to see how it goes. It goes as
a loss, yea his home court advantage. I agree, I
think it goes as lost. I think they'll give a shot.
I mean, this Houston team, they're just gritty. When you
look at that roster, you go person by person. They
don't absolutely amaze you or wile you with talent, but
(11:10):
that is a tough team to beat because they're gonna
give it all the entire game.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
If he can move it all, I would say, play
game four our play game three at home, play game
four at home, and hopefully go up three to one,
and if you're really really sore and you need a break,
then skip game five back in Houston, because then you
can close them out in game six.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
But if you lose home.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Court advantage, now you're gonna have to go back to
Houston and win again. And I just don't know that
that's I think Steve Kerr is a fabulous coach, but
I don't care how good of a coach you are.
If you don't have the horses, you're not gonna win games.
And the Warriors are Steph Curry, Draymond Green and a
bunch of role players. If they don't have Jimmy Butler,
(11:54):
they have a legitimate star with Jimmy Butler is out
there on the court.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
So we'll talk more about that coming up.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Shannon Sharp has taken a leave of absence from ESPN.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
I've got some thoughts on that.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Not to throw stones in glasshouses or to speak of
those who have strayed somewhere along the way that into
doing things they probably should have been done. We'll talk
about the Cowboys draft and the Texans draft, TGL Tigers
Golf League is expanding, and Shader Sanders has been in
the news the last couple of days and his draft
status is somewhat dropped, and there's a lot of people
(12:27):
that are saying it's been dropping because of his attitude. Well, okay,
let's talk attitudes and how important they are. When players
of this generation show up at an NFL training camp
or an invite or a combine and have an interview
with the team, what are they supposed to say and
how are they supposed to act. We'll get to that
(12:48):
conversation coming up in a little bit as well. Let's
talk about this NFL draft and give you some scenarios
that could take place tonight. It all gets underway for real.
Coming up in about three hours. It's the Indie average
show on the ticket.
