Speaker 1 (00:00):
And it was a convincing win.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
And I think we saw a very old and slow
Laker team against a very young and quite quick Spurs team,
and that was fun to see because the likes of
Fox and Castle and Vissel and Kelden Johnson and Harper
were blowing past people at a pretty good pace.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
That was that was pretty fun to watch.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
Yeah, I mean it was.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
The course of three hours last night, you could see
the closing of one window in the West and the
opening of another. Now, I mean not that, not that
a quarter final matchup in the prestigious NBA Cup determines windows,
windows of contention open and closed. But yeah, I mean
you could see the Lakers have serious issues keeping up

(00:48):
with the quicker teams in the West, and the best
teams in the West are the fastest.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
And this is.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Why I said I think the Lakers are a seven
through ten team eventually. I think they got off to
a hot start. Their schedule wasn't I haven't looked at
their schedule intent, but I don't see a lot of
really difficult teams on there. And when they have played
difficult teams, they haven't won. Like the Spurs are starting
to get into that realm. And let's also remember the
roster that the Spurs have is built up with eight

(01:15):
first round draft picks, and that's just something that's now
they're starting to get into their prime with one guy
at Harrison Barnes, still being able to play at his
age and playing quite efficiently as well. I am really
looking forward to the Saturday night game, and UTSA and
Colorado play Saturday afternoon here on the ticket starting at
two thirty. But I think the basketball game is what

(01:37):
it's seventh Central, yeah, and so it'll be six out there.
I'll be in perfect position to be able to see
the semifinals of the Emirates Cup. And I'm starting to
come around on Sam's side a little bit because, and
here's the reason why, I don't think the Lakers would
have put in the effort they did last night. The
Spurs may have because they're young and don't know any

(01:59):
better yet, But we are playing for half a million
dollars a piece here between now and next Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
And I do I think also, you know, nine pm start,
if that was a normal Wednesday night, December tenth regular
season game, a quarter to a third of both of
those fan bases are falling asleep during the third quarter
and reading the box score the next day, I like,
there is it's eight o'clock tip off Saturday against Oklahoma City,

(02:25):
so you have even more time to get ready for it.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
Eight o'clock, eight o'clock.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
So seven in Colorado. So yeah, we'll be exack back
to the hotel and well fed and.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
And ready to watch the semi final between What network
is that on?

Speaker 4 (02:39):
We they're all Amazon.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Well I have to watch on my computer because I
guess the hotel won't have an Amazon feed.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
You might be able to It's gotten pretty easy these days.
You might be able to talk them into to casting
it onto a TV for you. I think the most
the most important takeaway from last night, despite the the
obvious final score and advancing in the tournament, the fact
that we saw, you know, Monday night against a three

(03:10):
win Pelicans team, we saw the return of the biggest
thorn in the Spurs team's side.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
So far this season, the third quarters they have been getting.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
They have the one of, if not the worst point
differentials in the third quarter across the entire league. I
haven't checked it today to see what last night did
to it in terms of ranking. They Monday night against
the Pelicans, they were outscored forty five to twenty three
in the third quarter. And I think, like a lot
of Spurs fans last night, as I was watching that game,

(03:43):
watching the Lakers put together a little bit of a
run there in the second quarter. You know, Spurs were
up by twelve at halftime, and I, like a lot
of people, I was sitting there thinking, well, you know,
a ten ozer run and the Lakers are right back
in this thing. And last night we didn't see that

(04:04):
same Spurs team in the third quarter. We saw a
team that not only won the third quarter, but allowed
less than thirty points on the defensive side of the court,
held the Lakers to under thirty, put thirty four on
the board themselves, and never looked back in that game.
And I think that is Those are the signs of
growth where it's not just the young guys, the young

(04:27):
players on the roster that are growing. Those are signs
of growth from your head coach. You're still in experienced
head coach taking over for a legend. Those are the
kinds of I think the stats you can look for
and say that's a positive for the coaching staff to
get through to the guys at halftime to not come

(04:49):
out flat and look at times disinterested in the third
quarter of this game.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Mitch Johnson may be inexperienced, and just by the fact
that this is his second year of being a head
coach is evident of that. But that doesn't mean he's
not ready to make the right place and he has
been he has been groomed to be able to do this,
and he's been given the opportunity to coach a roster

(05:14):
that's really good. And what's the difference between Mitch Johnson
and let's say some of the others.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
How about Mark Dagno in Oklahoma City?

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
But I'm looking at the guy that got fired from
Memphis last year, the coach that you took coach for
the Spurs. It wasn't Taylor Taylor something. Yeah, anyway, Taylor
Jenkins and then Will Hardy and all the guys that
have been Spurs predecessors and fallen into the pop Sam Presty, RC.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Tree that are now head coaches.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
And you know, if you're coaching Memphis right now, it's
kind of a struggle because your best players hurt. You
never know what day of the week he's going to
show up or not. And if you're like Meadoka has
got a really good team in Houston, And so if
you've got a great roster, you're don't have to be
pop to win championships. You just have to not mess

(06:16):
it up. And I think that in the back of
his mind. And I'm not trying to put words or
anything into his into his mouth or his thoughts, but
I think he's confident that he can do this. You know,
I can remember the first time I did a UTSA
game or a WNBA game, and people would say, are
you ready for this level after doing high school games

(06:38):
or whatever? And you learn so much when you have
to do more. If you're working in the G League,
you don't have all the resources that an NBA coach has,
And if you're doing a play by play event for
a high school game, you've got to do a lot
more work to get all the information you need that's
provided for you by other people as you progress up.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
To the ladder.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
And so I know the first time I did a
Stars game or a UTSA game, I was quite confident
I could do it because I had done it at
a level that was harder to do than it was
at the level that I'm doing now. If I'd had
none of that infrastructure, then it would have been hard.
And that's when a coach coaches the Pelicans or the

(07:19):
Washington Wizards or or Portland that's not very good and
ownership doesn't seem to care about getting them good. Yeah,
there's going to be some doubt in your ability to
coach the team because I got nobody here. Nobody could
coach this team. We're just going to try to play
hard and see if we can eke one out at
the end of the game. And at the end of
the year, we're going to be, you know, thirty and
fifty two, and nobody's going to be happy about that,

(07:41):
and they going to think I'm a terrible coach. But
I think the I think Mitch Johnson is super confident
in his coaching abilities, and at this level, I think
it's about maintaining the relationship with players, making sure that
the message is the same but said differently so that
it doesn't get boring and trite, not getting too overwhelming

(08:02):
or too overbearing the players, but still challenge them to
do the things and play defense, letting them understand here's
what I'm seeing here's what you can do better. And
I don't think his lack of experience is anything that's
gonna make him not coach well in this game, or
the Oklahoma City game, or whoever they play out of
the East next week, or if they make it all

(08:24):
the way to the NBA Finals. I think he's been
He has taken every step of the way up and
hasn't cut any corners to where he has the opportunity
to be a great coach as long as the people
he's coaching are really good as well.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Yeah, and I think there's you know, the trend among
you know, I mentioned Dagno in Oklahoma City or Will
Hardy in Utah where they're trying to build around youth.
I think the a lot of times you see it
on you know, in baseball, where you have a you know,
maybe the guy that ends up the hitting coach five

(08:58):
years ago was working as a double A manager or
a double A hitting instructor, and he's grown with all
the young guys through the system. I think that's where,
you know, the immense pressure of taking over for Pop
was never going to be easy for anybody, but the
fact that Mitch Johnson had basically known this roster for

(09:22):
five years.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Well, here's another way of looking at it. Let's say
that Pop had decided to quit after Tim Duncan retired,
and you have a Mitch Johnson that was six years
or seven years younger in twenty eighteen or twenty nineteen,
that was coaching a bad team. Well, by the time
he got to coach the team that is what it
is now, they would have probably fired him because, well,
you sucked as a coach. How can we keep you

(09:44):
around when you're going nineteen and whatever, And not that
Pop's timing was no, it's never a good time to
have a stroke.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
I'm not talking about that.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
But whatever the timeline was for him to retire happened
at the perfect time because the team now was ready
to And you have a coach that has been on
the bench with the legend, learning from the legend, and
now he's ready to take over for the legend. And
a lot of times, look at what when Phil Jackson

(10:12):
left the Lakers and the Bulls not only leave the team,
he left the team in shambles. They weren't as good
as they were when he was there, and not necessarily
the second time with the Lakers, but certainly the Bulls
team was in disarray after he left in nineteen ninety seven.
So if you have to replace the legend with a

(10:33):
young and an up and coming team, that's a task
that nobody's going to be successful at and the only
thing you're going to get out of his NBA experience.
So it goes towards your pension. But if you get
to inherit a really good team, then all you got
to do is coach them the way that you want to.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
And I always say that. I always thought the interim year.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Last year, I thought Mitch was coaching the way Pop
would want him to coach. And I think this year
he's like, I got a great team. I just got
to coach them the way I want to. But with
the knowledge of what Top and others have taught me
on this ascension to where I'm at now.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yeah, working within that same structure, but making it more
your own.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Yeah, and being able to own it and know that, Okay,
he's not coming back, he's not going to get well
enough to coach. His time is up, and whether he
coaches for two years or thirty, as long as the
organization continues to develop players, who's to say that thirty
years from now, we're not talking about another legend named
Mitch Johnson because the organization is putting him in a

(11:34):
position to be successful. And at least as long as
Wemby and Fox and Castle and Vessel stay healthy for
the next ten or twelve years, the Spurs are going
to be championship contenders.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
They're not going to win them all.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
They're not going to win ten of the next twelve,
but they can be competitive. And at some point Oklahoma
City is going to get blown up with their salary structure,
and maybe you beat Oklahoma City before they get blown up,
and then you beat him again after they they don't
get after they have to scramble to redo their roster.
But the way the Spurs have developed their roster, when

(12:07):
the high priced players they have now go away, they're
gonna be replaced by the players who are on the
ascension to getting that money, and then there's gonna be
somebody else to fill in the void of the younger players.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
I mean, the Spurs right now are where the thunder
were three years again.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Exactly so maybe two or maybe two, yeah, but.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
I mean at that that being said, the JDub Chet
contract extensions will end up being your Dylan Harper and
your Steph Castle. But the numbers and you're gonna you're
gonna end up in the same position that they are, but.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Only for one year because the home grin Shay J
dub all three of them are gonna be maxed out
for two years starting the year after next. Right Whereas
the way it's it's set up is Wimby's Max deal
or next or next deal whatever that is, does really

(13:00):
go into full effect until Deer and Fox's deal is
over with, and then they have to make a decision
do we keep Fox at a lesser level or does
Fox move on? But this isn't for four more years
or three more years, and in three years it's when
Wimby will be eligible for his Max or supermax or
whatever the numbers are. So they've got it more stationed

(13:21):
out where they're never there'll be sometimes where they're probably
in the first apron, but I think the way they've
got it stationed out is they're never going to be
in the second one.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
I think if you keep Harper, Castle and Wemby, you're
in the second apron. There's no avoiding it, because those
are guys there are three guys that right now, look,
obviously Wimby's.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
Going to be on.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
It depends on what the second apron becomes, too, because
every year those numbers go up a little.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Bit, but they're based off of having three Max contract
level guys. That's where the design is. If you're going
to have that third guy on a MAX contract, you're
going to pay for it by being in the second apron.
You can have two guys on the max and stay under.
It is how the CBA was originally designed because that's
eventually when you draft, as well as Oklahoma City and

(14:07):
San Antonio have it's these are good problems to have
where you're deciding what Max level guys you want to
keep because you have so much talent on your roster.
You have four guys that are all max level play.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
Well, here's here's the deal.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
Victor has thirteen point three this year and sixteen point
eight next year, So twenty seven to twenty eight is
when Victor gets paid. That's when his next super contract comes,
whatever that number is. Deer and Fox will be at
fifty four and Devin Vessel will be at twenty four,
and nobody currently on the roster is under contract for

(14:42):
twenty seven to twenty eight, so uh, Castle and Harper Castle, Yeah, Harper,
I mean Harper's at thirteen, so Harper doesn't is isn't
eligible for his MAX until twenty nine to thirty, which
is the last year of Deer and Fox's deal.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
That's where it lines up perfectly, because that's what I'm saying,
By the time you're giving Harper his MAX deal, that
looks like, I mean, we're getting so far ahead of ourselves.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
But but you.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
Can win four championships before there exactly. Castle gets paid
the year before, so Castle, Wimby and Fox could push
you towards because Deer and Fox is at fifty seven
and twenty eight twenty nine.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
But that's where I'm saying, you're still at the end
of the day, you always only have three max level
guys at one time. At one time, even though Harper
the very next year is going to be a mat
then one of those guys drops off exactly, and then
it also happens to be the guy who's twenty seven
right now and who will be thirty one at that
It's so they've lined it up so so perfectly.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
That's why I don't want to any more talk about
trading for Giannis and messing this up. I'm with you now,
I don't want to win one championship now. I want
to be eligible for the next ten.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Unless maybe it's Fox uh and not Castle and Harper
involved in the trade.

Speaker 4 (15:52):
And I'll tell you what, I'm half way interest.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
I've been a major deer in Fox fan since two
years ago when Sacramento went deep into the playoffs and
then they crapped the bed the last two years after that.
But the twenty two twenty three Sacramento team that was
finished third, uh, that that was that was a pretty good.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
The bonus running the well.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Yeah they were, they were really good.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
All right, let's talk about some NFL games this weekend
and who's going to win the Heisman? All coming up
six seventeen on the ticket.
