Speaker 1 (00:02):
All right, five twenty one, it's the Andy Everage Show
on the ticket. We'll talk Dallas Cowboys coming up in
a minute. Jerry says nothing stopping negotiation, so why aren't
there having any we'll discuss that a little bit. Rashid
Rice does not know what his fate's going to be,
and we'll talk more NFL in the six o'clock hour.
Kind of a recurring theme with Colin Cowherd. And again,

(00:23):
I love listening to that show. I think it's a
probably the best syndicated sports talk show in the years
I've been here that I can because there's always fodder,
there's always something I can talk about after I listen
to that show or agree or disagree with. And Colin
has been a big fan of Caleb Williams for a
long time and hopes that the Bears get this right.

(00:44):
And my thought was they pretty much knew that at
some point last year they were going to fire Matt Ebraflus,
and why they even allowed him to start the season
and start that training camp last year I thought was ridiculous.
He was a lame duck coach, even though he didn't
know he was one or didn't think he was one.
And the Bears got off to a start that no

(01:04):
one liked. And he's a defensive guy trying to make
sure that the offensive is trying to run the way
it should and Caleb Williams now has to unlearn an
old system, learn a new system, and get ready for
this year. And they're holding him out of some of
the early preseason games. I'm sure they want to protect him,
but they also want to make sure he understands what
he's doing before they throw him to the fire, because

(01:26):
the criticism is going to come no matter how good
or how well he plays, or if he doesn't play
well at all. And so I think the Chicago Bears
are going to be a better team. They've got a
terrific wide receiver corps, and their offensive line has improved.
I was glad to hear that they dug up this
stat that the top six rushing teams in the NFL

(01:50):
last year all made the playoffs interesting. So yeah, something
that I've been harping on for a long time. This
is a passing lead, but you still need to be
able to run the football. And I saw talk with
this with Mark VanderMeer every time we have him on,
Go take your favorite team this year and track their record,
and if they have over one hundred and twenty yards rushing,

(02:12):
they hardly ever loose. And if they have between one
hundred and one hundred and twenty, they most likely win.
And if they're between ninety and one hundred, it's fifty
to fifty. And if they're about eighty five or less,
they're probably not winning. This is a league that you
still have to be able to convert first down. So
one of the things that makes the Eagles so good
is they convert third down. And if it's third down

(02:34):
and six and they only get four, they're going to
run the Tousch push on the next play and get
it and get on fourth down, even sometimes when they're
in their own territory. So I liked Caleb Williams when
he was at OU. I thought he was a good
choice to replace Kyler Murray. He chose that because of
Lincoln Riley, and then he went with Lincoln Riley to
USC for two years. I thought Caleb Williams in Southern

(02:56):
California wasn't as good, but I don't think his defense
was nearly as good as the Ou defense he had
when he was there. And I also think that the
receivers that he had at Ou, I think for he
may have trying to remember who those receivers were, but
he had some good ones and he was able to
make sure that he spread the ball around to a
lot of them. So as we go into this year's

(03:18):
season and look at the NFC North, I think the
Chicago offense is going to be okay and probably a
lot of fun to watch. And Ben Johnson notes what
he's doing in calling plays, and I'm sure he's going
to get away from the defense and let the defense
do whatever the defense does. But the problem I have
with the Chicago Bears is the league that they play in,
the division that they play in. They're not better than Detroit,

(03:41):
They're not better than Green Bay, and I don't think
they're better than Minnesota. Now the jury still had a
little bit on Minnesota because we're going to see if
JJ McCarthy can have anywhere near the year that Sam
Darnold had last year, and if he remember, Minnesota won
what fourteen fifteen games last year? Thirteen games they were
a wild our team out of that league, and then

(04:02):
they had to play the game in LA that was
transferred to Arizona because of the wildfires.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
By the way, I don't know who you were thinking
of for your ou receivers. None of these names ring
a bell. Marvin Mims, Junior, Michael Woods, the second Jayden Hall.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Those were the twenty two receivers, the twenty twenty one receivers.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Okay, I have no clue who you're talking about.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Anyway, he got the ball to they were good enough.
He made sure that they got him. He was the
reason they got as far as they did. They lost
at Oklahoma State on you know, late in the year,
and the next day Lincoln Riley was on his way
to California. Yeah, so anyways, quarterback with him, but yeah,
and he had good way. I think Caleb Williams is
a good quarterback. And I think you could make an

(04:46):
argument between Jared Goff, JJ McCarthy and Jordan Love that
at some point he's going to be the best quarterback
in that league, in that division. I think Jordan Love
has still got a long ways to go to even
get near what the previous to Green Bay quarterbacks have had.
Goff has had a little bit of a resurgence leaving
LA and going to Detroit. That's worked out for him

(05:07):
and Caleb Williams is far more overall talented than JJ McCarthy,
I think so. I think the quarterback situation, he's really good.
But I'm not so sure that the Chicago can beat
any of those teams enough to be someone to I
think they're the fourth best team in that division, and

(05:28):
I think Detroit still number one in Green Bay and
Minnesota are a little bit better too. At least one
of those two teams is likely to be a wildcard
if Detroit wins the division.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
I would just on paper, because again, like you and
I both talk about, we are not sold on JJ McCarthy.
He could surprise us this year, you know, but at
least from what we've seen actually on film of NFL games,
I would put the Bears just slightly ahead of the
Vikings because yes, there.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
You go from winning at the rate that they did
last year to not winning half that many games. If
they win eleven twelve games, they're still possibly a wildcard team.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
I agree, And even though I'm not a big Sam
Donald guy, at least Sam Donald has skins on the wall.
He has NFL talent, even if it's as a backup
or being thrust upon being the starter that team that
he was around. He can throw the football. That's the
biggest thing that you and I half heartedly joke about.

(06:31):
We don't even know what JJ McCarthy can really throw
the football. He can hand the football off. But I mean,
if it's just hey, JJ, it's Justin Jefferson, bubble screen
on one cool, then Justin Jefferson, you can go for
fifteen and sixty yards. If I don't have to throw
it more than ten fifteen yards, then great. But if
we're relying on JJ McCarthy to display arm strength down

(06:55):
the field, that's my biggest question mark. And that's why
I would at least put right now the Bears ahead
of the Vikings, just because at least Caleb Williams has
a year under his belt in an NFL system.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
But now it's a different system.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Than I get that, but it's still you have the
still still the same players from last year and an
upgrade on offensive line. Again, I bring this up all
the time for everybody that gave Justin Fields and I'm
not a Justin Fields fan, but as everybody that gave
Justin Fields such a hard time, he won more games

(07:34):
with a hell of a lot less talent than Caleb
Williams did his first year, and they set.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Caleb Williams but see, I think they will see I don't.
I don't think they set up Caleb Williams to succeed.
I think they gave him a coach. They knew they
were going to fire an offense, they knew they weren't
going to eventually run, and they didn't know what the
direction of the team was, which is typical a bat ownership.
And that's why he hades. Justin Fields knew what the

(08:03):
game plan was. Justin Fields knew what the plays were.
Caleb Williams was coming in and trying to learn a
system from scratch with a system that wasn't going to
be there seven eight games end of the year. And
that's why when we talked about this last summer, why
they let Matty and I don't care whether you think
Maddie Refluce a good coach or a bad coach. I
think it was predetermined that unless he started, unless he

(08:23):
won every game, he was going to not be the
coach anymore. If he'd started off nine to oh, you
couldn't have fired him. But once you got the chance
to fire him, you fired him. And now you've got
to tell your quarterback you're going to have to learn
something else. Justin Fields is an average quarterback. I think
Caleb Williams is a better quarterback, and Ben Johnson's a
way better offensive coach than what he's been under since

(08:45):
Lincoln Riley.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Well, we at least know that the Chicago Bears defense
got a heck of a lot better, right. We know
that for sure because in the fifth round they took
a Zay Frasier.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
That's true, they did. I haven't seen how good he's doing,
but hopefully well enough to be able to make a
difference for that defense. All Right, Jerry says there's nothing
waiting for him and Mica to get together. So what
are they waiting for? Let's discuss next. It's the Andy
Everage show on the ticket
