Speaker 1 (00:03):
The Cincinnati Bengals are trying to resurrect or at least
save their season until Joe Joe Burrow can come back
and really saved them in the last few months of
the season. Today they made a trade with Cleveland to
get Joe Flaccos, So that means Dylan Gabriel is the starter,
and I would have guess that also means that schadere
is the backup, because I don't know that they got

(00:25):
any other quarterbacks there, so that to me seems like
that's where they're at.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
I think Billy's Abby still, he's on the practice squad
for Shad would likely be the backup. Well, maybe should
will actually get to play now, because I'm not sold
that Dylan Gabriel is the answer either.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Did you watch the game against the back I did
not see them. No. I did Gabriel play pretty well
out here? He did.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
He was if nothing else, he was he was accurate
with the ball, He made good decisions. There were some
passes downfield that you could say he overshot, some of
the receiver dropped a lot of it.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Honestly, was like just rookie jitters, it felt like.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
But if nothing else, I thought he played an effective game,
and really, if it weren't for some bad defense on
the other end, really the Browns honestly should.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Have won that game.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
So Gabriel, just if you're rate on a scale a
rookie third rounder, I give about a B for its
performance solid.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I've said this since the beginning, and now that Flacco's
out of the picture, it's those two guys that are
basically trying out for next year. And I would imagine
Gabriel plays a couple of games and then once they
lose those and they're pretty much eliminated by the middle
of October from the playoff picture. I think that they'll
start to see what shoud Or can do. They'll either
work him into games or they'll put him in a

(01:30):
situation where he gets to start a couple of games
because they have to make a decision on what next
year's draft is going to look like. They need help
in a lot of different places, and they need to
know if they've got the quarterback or not, and if not,
they should get rid of both of them and go
get the quarterback and maybe make one of them an
adequate backup. But it's going to be real games against

(01:52):
real competition with whatever offensive line and running backs and
receivers you have. And that's how they're going to have
to determine who is the guy that's gonna is gonna
be the leader of that team. Not only does your
quarterback have to be your best player, but he also
has to be the leader. He has to be the
guy that walks into a room and says, we're not
doing this or we are doing that. Players have to

(02:13):
have confidence that when he steps in that huddle, he's
gonna get it done. He is the alpha of all
alpha's on a team, and if he's not performing at
peak efficiency, the team is not.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
And I don't know that the Browns.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
When the Browns basically signed Flacco, they were telling their
season ticket.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Holders, hey, we're going to be competitive.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
And when they realized that they weren't really that good, uh,
and it was and then it was time to get
off the forty year old guy because we know what
he can do and he's not going to be here
for the long term anyway. And what they I didn't
see what did they get for Flacco today? A draft pick?

Speaker 3 (02:44):
So they swapped six and they got a fifth round
or form. So it's late.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
It's late picks a pick swop and he's off their payroll,
and now we can see what Shoulder and Dylan Gabriel
can do, and we'll make a decision and base the
rest of this season. I don't know what you do
if you're a Browns fan. I guess you still go
and root for your team, but more than likely you're
going to watch the other team play.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
I think it wasn't just necessarily the Bengals are trying
to keep their season alive. I think realistically we know,
based on where this team is out that even when
Joe Burrow comes back, they won't be in the playoffs anyway.
I think what it is is that at the very least,
they want the offense to be more continuous, and with
Jake Browning, someone who actually played well two years ago
when Burrow was out for the season with an injury,
he has not been as effective this year. And Joe Flacco,

(03:28):
if nothing else, has experienced going from team to team,
playing with different coordinators, different systems, and has the ability
to do that, if nothing else.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
So I don't see the Bengals automatically winning games. You know,
I have to look at the rest of their schedule
going forward. We'll have our NFL picks coming up again tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
I just assume they don't.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
But I don't think the Bengals are winning a lot
just because they get Joe Flacco. To me, if you
look at what the Bengals did last year, it was
kind of remarkable how well Burrow made that team play
with all the injury they had, with all the issues
that they had, and they still almost made the playoffs
because of him.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
And then you fast forward to this year.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
I thought they had a chance to be the seventh
seed as long as he was upright. But here he
goes again, and he's going to be out for six
to eight games, and I think those are six to
a games that are going to be too hard for
them to overcome. And maybe he makes another valiant trip
in November and December, but it's still not going to
be enough other than to upset other people's playoff hopes.
I really don't think it's going to make the Bengals

(04:28):
what they thought they were going to be. John Mattier says,
I want to play against UT this weekend, less than two.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Weeks after surgery.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
We'll talk about that in the ou Texas game next
Mark vandermerin a little bit as well.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
It's the Andy Everts Show on the ticket
