Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, five twenty, it's the Andy Everige Show on
the ticket the preseason one more week to go for
the Texans and then it's regular season time in just
a couple of weeks. And Mark VanderMeer joins as for
our usual Tuesday visit. Good evening, Mark, how are things
with Houston? And you had a trade today as well?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Well. We have a joint practice with the Lions on Thursday, Andy,
and then the game against the Lions on Saturday. We're
headed to forward Detroit tomorrow, the entire team and I'll
be with them, and I think this is going to
be great to have those two points of contact against
the Lions, especially the joint practice because I don't expect
(00:41):
the starters to play on Saturday. But you never know.
I don't know anything about that other than that's my
take on the situation and the trade that this week.
That occurred this week with John Metshi going to Philadelphia
for Harrison Bryant tight end was a good one because
Metchi was probably on the bubble to make the team
at the wide receiver group. I think ultimately, you know,
(01:04):
he might have been able to make it having a
solid final leak here, but the Texans were in need
at tight end. They lost two tight ends last week,
including Grevin Jordans, so it all works out for the Texans.
And they like dealing with Philadelphia. I guess Howie Roseman
Nick Cassio. They have a good relationship, so it's a
good week. I'm looking forward to it. I just want
to see everybody get out of this thing injury free,
(01:25):
preferably so you can head for the Rams on September
seventh to open up the regular season.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
I've been told coaches really like the controlled scrimmages that
they have with other teams. It allows you to see
another formation, how somebody may react to your formation, how
you're going to make your calls offensively and defensively, and
it's not and you can kind of stop and start
if you don't like. You can make it like a
practice where if somebody screws it up, you can start
(01:51):
it over and do it again.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Right, and you can come up with situations, you know,
down for up for whatever. And offensive defense they work
out the at the same time on different fields, so
you have the Texans offense against the Lions defense on
one field, Lion's offense against the Texans defense on another field.
The head coach will just have to watch the tape later.
He's got to pick one. I like to stand in
between the field to keep my head on a swivel
(02:14):
and try to catch both sequences of scrimmage. Now here's
the thing about the joint practice. It is great, like
you said, because your quarterback's not gonna get hurt. In
a joint practice. Your quarterback's not gonna get hit. They're
not going to really take anybody to the ground. Now,
sometimes guys do falls to the ground, but you're not
going to tackle them that hard. It's a lot of
thud they call it, where you just sort of wrap
(02:37):
up the guy would have been tackled at all likelihood.
So you don't see everything the brute physical nature of
the sport, but you see a lot of execution that
you're not gonna see against your own team. Because you
said it, they don't know you as well as your
guys know you, because eve ben squaring off against each
other in practice for all these weeks. So I like it.
I think it's gonna be good work with the Lions,
(02:58):
keep everybody upright, and then play in that final preseason
game where you have a lot of guys who are
on the last house on the left. You know, this
is kind of like what that fourth preseason game used
to be when they had for where you have a
lot of the second third teamers playing rookie's trying to
make it or maybe undrafted or otherwise and that sort
of thing. But you do get some compelling stories because
(03:18):
a lot of the guys playing in that game off
and end up making place for you as people get
hurt and they matriculate into the lineup somehow.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
On this trade today, what do you know about Harrison Bryant.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Well, Bryant is a good tight end. It's not Look
you're not getting Tony Gonzalis Antonio Gates here. Okay, you're
getting Harrison Bryant, who's a good solid blocker and he
can catch the ball. But he's not one of these
prolific pass catching type tight ends. I mean, if he
was great, you wouldn't have been able to get him
in this deal. So he's a good, solid guy who
(03:49):
can help out right now. But look at the depth
of the tight end position with the Houston Texas. It's
not that great right now. Because I like the top two.
I like Dalton Schultz, and Kate Stover and off. A
lot of think Stover's have a really good second year
in the league here. But after that, you were hoping
to have Brevin Jordan, you know. So you have Irv Smith,
who's a little bit of a journeyman, but I don't
want to insult him that way. I think he can
(04:10):
really help your team too. Really good inline blocker Luke
Lache who they drafted. He's the son of Jim Lache,
offensive lineman who played for Washington all those years and
won a Super Bowl, and he was drafted originally by
the Chargers. I spoke with Jim when we were up
at the Greenbrier. He watched his son. Luke is good.
But I don't know if Luke is gonna make the
fifty three. Initially, will he be on the practice squad.
(04:33):
I would say that that's the worst case scenario for him.
Maybe he gets picked up by another team, but maybe
he does make the fifty three. I don't know. Again,
he has a big week. Light goes on this week.
You never know how they're going to handle it. But
at the tight end position, they're a little thin.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
What's the prognosis of Joe Mixon with week one looming
a couple of weeks away.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
I don't know. I wish I knew. I'll tell you this,
He's not out there of practice today. He's not going
to make this trip at all likelihood, or if he does,
he's not going to practice. So what is the availability.
Let's say he gets back next week, Can he play
Week one? I would say certainly if he does get
back next week, But the feeling is no. And I again,
(05:14):
I don't know any inside information, but I got a
feeling that we're going to start the season with Joe unavailable,
whether he's on injured reserve or POMP or something some
kind of unavailable list, and they'll have to go with
Nick Chubb. But Chubb looks great. It's eddy, I mean,
he really did. He looked really good with five carries
for twenty five yards, bludgeoning people. Kind of reminded you
(05:35):
of old Nick Chubb, and the offensive line paved the
way for some good run blocking with the starters in there.
I thought that was a really encouraging a showing by
the first team offense. So maybe they're headed in the
right direction here. And I think Pierce is getting back.
I believe Pierce will participate in the joint practice on Thursday,
So let's see if they can get Chubb and Pierce
going and then you have some things to work with here.
(05:58):
I start to like it because what he marks the
look from USC looked nice against the Carolina Panthers as well.
Forty yards rushing. I had some nice gashing runs and
physical runs. He kind of reminded you of Damian Pierce
in twenty twenty two when he's a rookie in the preseason.
So some encouragement. They're running back despite the fact that
we still don't know about Joel Mixon. But when you
(06:19):
do get mixing back, it's going to be really fun.
If Chubb keeps running like this.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Defensively held the Panthers to three points, said some takeaways
talk about the defense, I would think you got to
be somewhat excited about that as the regular season looms
pretty quickly.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, I think we can't throw a parade downtown for
what they did against the Panthers. Who knows if they're
going to be any good this year. I think they'll
be better, but we don't really know, right but you
have what you have. They held them to three points
third down for the Carolina Panthers. They were one for
ten and on five of those opportunities they threw two
picks and they were sacked three times. That's how bad
(06:58):
third down was for the Carolina out offense. Thanks to
the Houston Texans defenders all three layers of the depth chart.
I thought they played great on Saturday. That was a
dominant defensive performance. Bryce Young couldn't do anything against this
team when he was out there. That was really nice. Now, look,
you're not playing Patrick Mahomes, you're playing Bryce Young. But
it was an encouraging thing again, and we just have
(07:20):
to see that against Detroit. If you see something like
that Thursday, well, now you're really fired up because it's
Jared goffin that high flying Detroit Lions offense. Now, the
thing that they're going through is replacing coordinators on both
sides of the ball. Ben Johnson now the head coach
at Chicago, and Aaron Glenn, the head coach of the
New York Jets. So lots of stories to follow this week,
and we're going to do all of it awesome.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Well, look forward listening to you on Saturday. Big game
up in Detroit on at noon and eleven thirty pregame show,
so you enjoy the final preseason game and then it's
get ready to do it for real.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
All right, I love it. We'll talk next week. Thanks Andy.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
All Right, that's Mark VanderMeer. He's the voice of the
Houston Texans, and you'll hear the game starting at eleven
thirty here on the ticket.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
You know, real quick, you know, I obviously the biggest
question mark right now, like you talked about it, is
the health and availability of Joe Mixon. And I'm not
discounting Nick Chubb, you know, because Nick Chubb is still
the name Nick Chubb. He is a very talented running back.
But the biggest question mark with him is the past
(08:24):
two years he's had knee injuries. I know right now,
and I have no inside information whatsoever, but I know
right now the Washington Commanders are having negotiation issues as
well with their starting running back Brian Robinson Junior, and
they have already kind of said that they're willing to
trade Brian Robinson Junior if the Texas and Domico Ryans
(08:48):
think that Joe Mixon may not be ready, and even
they don't want to put that workload if it's only
going to cost them maybe what at best the second
round draft pick. I'm just saying that would be a
great pickup if the Texans could manage to pull off
a potential trade with the Commanders to go get like
Brian Robinson Junior.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Just saying I don't disagree with that. I would trade
a high pick for him.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Yeah, so we'll see what happens.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
All right, Let's get to some baseball discussion. Aaron Judge
still not able to throw the ball, but he can hit.
We'll talk about that and baseball realignment. Coming up. It's
the Andy Everage Show on the ticket
