Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, Bive eighteen, it's the Andy Everts Show on
the ticket.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Thank you for being part of the show. Today.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
The Houston Texans are in West Virginia at the Greenbrier.
How's life with the Greenbrier?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Mark?

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Mark Vandermir joining us? How's things up there with training camp?

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Andy? The Greenbrier does not suck, It does not wa.
It's an awesome place. In fact, right now I'm at
Slam and Sammy's John Harris and I are just doing
our show after this, and it is going to be
awesome because we're overlooking the eighteenth Green. It's a par
three on the Old White Course. And some listeners who
are golfers might have heard of this place. They've had

(00:38):
PGA tournaments here, Ryder Cup. But most importantly, the Greenbrier's
home to Houston Texans practice twenty twenty five in training camp,
and we've watched a couple here and it's a great
place weather wise and otherwise, and a couple of really
good sessions here in Pats for the Texans as they
played their first preseason game Saturday.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Well.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
I think also there's some history there too, as that
was a secret bunker for presidents back during wartime in
the forties and fifties and sixties, so they had some
secret sessions in there in case there was a national emergency.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Yeah, absolutely correct. There's a bunker here. You can still
tour the bunker, and a whole bunch of other things
have gone on. This place doubled as a hospital during
World War Two. It was going to be taken over
by a large hotel chain. In two thousand and nine
of Jim Justice, who became governor and is now a senator,
he bought it and really maintained and preserved the history here.

(01:30):
Sam Sneed was a pro here. That's why this place
is called Slam and Sammi's where worth sitting. And this
is a whole bunch of stuff. It's a cool place
to be in, a great place for training camp because
weather number one, Andy, I mean, it was seventy degrees
this morning, maybe low sixties actually when we started our
morning show, and we needed zip ups and stuff, which
is just bizarre to think about it Exians in August.

(01:51):
But it's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Well, in two things, put training camp there.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
You get to practice in cooler weather, but then you
also are kind of on a retreat for allt of
while and you have less distractions. Are those some of
the reasons they chose to go there.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Absolutely, you're right on it. Jamiko Rans wants the team
to be away, be together, have no distractions other than
each other. You get to know each other more. They
all play uno, they played other games. There's nothing to
do here. They do have a casino in the building,
but there is no NFL employee. That's allowed in a
casino during the season and in the offseason. You can

(02:24):
never bet on any sports, of course, though those rules
are very strict in the National Football League. So there's
nothing to do but get to know each other better.
And they like it, you know, because it's very pleasant here.
And I think it's dynamite for them to have this
opportunity to bond and to build some team chemistry. The
defense already has it Andy, there's no question. And the offense,

(02:45):
you know, it's under construction. It's a work in progress.
Like we talked about before, they are getting it together,
but it's slow and steady. You're not seeing these quantum
leaps necessarily. You see moments, but you haven't seen the
finished products.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
All right, What is the surprise of training camp so far?
Or is there always still waiting for one. Is there
somebody that stood out that you didn't expect?

Speaker 3 (03:06):
That's a great question. I think a number of players
have met or exceeded expectations. You know, Jayden Hagens, their
second round draft choice from Iowa State receiver. You know,
we thought he was gonna be okay. Today he had
an explosive day, kind of like a training camp coming
out party. He's made some catches before, but today he
showed that. You know, we almost said he is him,

(03:26):
you know, that kind of thing. I might have actually
said that. I don't know, but he is really fun
to watch. He's a good looking player for this football team,
and I think he's one that you got to watch
how they line him up once they get to these
regular season games. He's got a build similar to Nico Collins.
He's very tall and I'm eager to see how they
use him. Nick Chubb had a great practice today. I

(03:48):
thought that was his best one. He really found some
cracks through the holes and got some yak and showed
the after burners and a breakaway run to the outside
on one occasion. So that was good walk of Campus's defense. Collectively,
they are lights out. They look like one of the
best defenses in the NFL for sure. The pass rushers,

(04:09):
the edge guys, you know them already, Will Anderson Junior
and Daniel Hunter. They are electric. And on the back end,
they as good as any team in the league, maybe
the best team in the league when you look at
Derek Singley Junior, Kamari Lassiter, where Kaylen Bullock can do
for them as a safety, There's so much to work with.
The linebackers look great. Christian Harris returned to practice today,
didn't do team stuff, but he was dressed in full uniform,

(04:30):
full pads, and that's a big step in the right
direction for him. So a lot to be encouraged about.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Overall, almost all of the preseason predictions I've seen when
it comes to the AFC South say it's basically Houston's
is going to run away with this division. And while
that may or may not happen, we'll see. I think
it's always tough when you're a coach or a player
or a broadcaster or whatever for the team that's so

(04:56):
heavily favored because Indiana and are Indianapolis and Jacksonville and
Tennessee have also seen those those press clippings, and they
want to prove that they're not just a patsy in
that league or in that division. So you got to
be careful about those teams when you get around to
playing them.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Correct.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Absolutely, Tennessee beat the Texans last year at NRG Stadium,
and this should be a better Tennessee team the Colts
last year. Look, the Texans won the division. We all
get it, but the Colts played two very close games
with the Texans where they had the ball last and
had things gone right for them, they could have won
those games. So they're always going to be close in
the division because they know you better than anybody. They

(05:34):
see you twice a year, and they see you play
the other opponents they play twice a year on tape,
so you know each other very well. It's very hard
to keep secrets and hide things and disguise things against
division opponents. That's why you tend to see so many
close division games. And I would not be surprised if
it's more of a struggle than people think. In the
AFC South. The Texans do have the most talent, but

(05:55):
you got to go out there and do it, and
sometimes that's the most difficult thing. You're the hunted. You know,
we talk about those cliches, but they're there for a reason.
Everybody's coming after you in the AFC South. So yeah,
why you want to beat the Ravens and Chiefs and
Bills and think you're in that echelon of the league,
Well guess what those guys from underneath. They're coming for
you and you have to fight them off. Well, otherwise

(06:16):
you'll find yourself with them.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
And the division win is huge because not only does
it guarantee you a playoff spot, but it should get
you a home game in the first round of the
playoffs too.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah to me, and you know your appreacher, what I
like to say, which is win the division. You know,
we talk about these grandiose ideas. I don't think grandios,
but these real high expectation goals and want to get
to the Super Bowl, want to get to the AFC
Championship Game, absolutely no question about it. We want to
do all those things. But you've got to do job one,

(06:46):
which is win the division and play that home game
in the first weekend at the very least, otherwise you're
not going anywhere. You can win a wild card game
on the road and make that climb. It's happened, but
you make life very difficult on yourself. The Texans are
so good at NRG Stadium in the postseason over the years,
there's six and two and that's a good mark to have.
So play at home and take it from there. Preferably

(07:08):
play that second game at home as well, which they
have never done in the divisional round. If they get
to do that, and I really like their chances of
getting to an AFC championship game, But you can't play
that game today. You got to just get through the
season right now and play as well as you can,
especially in the early part of the schedule. Andy, when
you have the Rams and Tampa Bay to start out
the schedule, that's a real tough opening.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
All right.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
You got a preseason game coming up on Saturday with Minnesota.
What are your thoughts on this game this weekend? What
do you expect to see?

Speaker 3 (07:37):
You know, I don't expect to see all the starters,
but I expect to see some of the starters, and
Damiko Rans hasn't said yet, so we'll know more later
in the week. I would like to see CJ. Scroud
if they could find a way to get them out
there and the number one offense as many guys who
are available as possible, just to work up a lather,
do something positive and then hit the showers, and then

(08:00):
get the second teamers in there. And I hate to
call them all second teamers, because a lot of these
guys nix and match and blend between the ones and
the two, so to speak, and they end up playing
a lot of snaps for you. So Davis Mills is
going to play a lot of football on Saturday. The
other quarterbacks will get a quarter each, I would figure
at least, and you're going to get to see all
levels of the depth chart against the Viking team that

(08:22):
is always good at home. It seems you're going to
see JJ McCarthy for the Vikings. So that'll be a
good test for whoever's out there on defense to play
an actual starting quarterback. Now is he an actual starting
quarterbacks that he's never started a regular season game? I
don't know how to define him, but he's the guy
they have planned to be number one, and he's going
to play. So it's a great opportunity for you to
show out against their first team offense. And I think

(08:43):
that is as good a piece of drama in this
particular game as we're going to get.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
All right, Mark, thanks so much, Enjoy Greenbrier, and we'll
look forward to talking to you next week after the
first preseason game.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Sounds great, andys, thanks a lot.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
All right. That's Mark Vandermier.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
He is the voice of the Texans two thirty right
for airtime on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Yes, sir, Yes, two thirty airtime, three o'clock. I was
gonna say three o'clock tip, kick, three o'clock kick. They
may tip, they may tip, depending on JJ McCarthy. I
love Mark vander Meers a little shot.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
There really a starting quarterback. I'm not so sure.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
And I'm glad that you know talking about JJ McCarthy
because we got word today he will be without at
least for the first three games. His second best receiver,
Jordan Addison of the Minnesota Vikings.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Is substance abuse policy. Huh yep.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
He will be suspended without pay for the first three games.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
You know.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Mark mentioned that as an employee of the NFL, you're
not allowed to go into a casino, which I think
is the stupidest for wal ever. I mean, what does
an NFL employee playing blackjack or wheel a fortune in
the slot machine have to do with, you know, potentially
having an outcome on games. And I don't even know
if the Greenbrier even has a sports book in that casino.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
I haven't been there to check it out, but I
just and I can.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
I get the the Damika Ryan's probably wouldn't want the
players in there anyway. But I just think the NFL's
policy on what you can do and not do is
so it's not our cake. It's it's new, but it's
just weird how how they try to police it. You
can bet on another sport if you're not in the facility,
and it's not during the season, but on on every

(10:26):
second Tuesday with a full moon.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
You can't do this or that.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
I mean, why not just put all of the all
of it out there any just to cover everything, just
to make sure.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Just let them do it all.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Just as long as you're not betting on on the NFL,
we don't care.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Just do whatever you want with that, all right.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Somebody that usually likes to talk a lot is Draymond Green,
and he's opened his mouth again. We'll discuss next. It's
the Indie Everage show on the ticket
