Speaker 1 (00:00):
I know you guys are thrilled that you finally were
able to beat Kansas City, especially in Kansas City.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Yeah, it's a breakthrough game, Andy, because they've never won
a game quite like that. I'm not going to call
it the biggest win they've ever had, but in the
context of this season and in the context of a
game like that in December prime time on the road
against the rulers of the AFC, I mean, these are
the kings of the AFC. They've been the seven consecutive
AFC Championship games. I know this is not their best team,
(00:29):
but the locals told me that this was probably as talented,
just pure talent, as any of the teams they've had.
They're just not playing well enough, and the Texans defense
just beat the daylights out of them. It was a
pleasure to see. It was so awesome to see their
fans leaving the building with five minutes to go, and
a real great experience for the Texans, who did not
(00:52):
over celebrate. They thought it was a great win, but
they know that they are bigger prizes ahead, so they're
going to just take it from here.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
The Texans defense has been amazing, especially in this run,
but pretty much all year. Just talk about how well
they're playing right now and the confidence they have against
the at least the best quarterback of this generation, if
not forever.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Well, you look at the last three games. It was Bills,
Colts Chiefs, and the Bills and Chiefs games were in
prime time and the Texans absolutely dismantled the attacks of
Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. These guys had almost historically
bad games, at least in the case of Mahomes, it
was the worst game he's ever played. And you got
(01:34):
to credit the Texans defense. We're having a great deal
to do with it. They're good at all three levels.
They hit the snot out of opponents. You catch a pass,
they're going to hit you. You saw it with Petrie
and Rashid Rice and Travis Kelcey that last pick of
bobble and as he's out, Shire picks it off. Miles
Bryant drilled Kelsey legally and Kelsey was slow to get up,
(01:56):
and look, it's all legal. They don't want to be
illegal in these hits, but they want to be violent
and they want you to know that when they come to town,
you're going to feel it. And that's just the whole philosophy.
So it's paying off right now. We'll see how far
can take them. And I think it's fun to watch
this defense. You like watching football, You got to like
watching this defense, especially if you support the deep steel blue.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
How much does the offense CJ. Stroud? The coordinators, the
players realize that the defense is so good that if
we just don't mess it up, if we just play solid,
we get If we don't get third and three, okay,
well putt and we'll do it again next time. The
confidence that they have in their defense that if there
is a series that goes awry, as long as they
(02:39):
don't make a bad turnover, deepen their own end defense
is going to take care of them and they're going
to score that points to win the game.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
Well, I can't agree anymore. I mean, that is exactly
what I've been thinking. The vibe that I got in
that particular game and in many games I know they
want to get better on offense. They need to get
better on offense to get to where they want to go.
In that game and maybe many others down the stretch,
I don't know. It was like that, just don't turn
the ball over. Both quarterbacks on Sunday night were below
(03:09):
fifty percent completions and the defenses were really dealing. But CJ.
Stroud did not turn the ball over. He had many
sack saving throws where he avoided the sack. Just throw
the incompletion, get it out of there, don't take the stack.
Enable your team to have decent field position, and worst
case punt, they'll handle it on the other end. Just
(03:29):
don't give the Chiefs the short field. And yeah, the
third quarter was bad. You had four to three and outs,
you gave up ten points. That was tough to take.
But in the fourth quarter they got the key drive
after the Chiefs went for it on fourth down, they
got the touchdown. I think the Chiefs thought, worst case,
we're giving up a field goal because their defense was
playing so well. But they gave up a touchdown and
(03:50):
that felt like an insurmountable lead in a game like that.
So yeah, I think they've been handling their business like that, Andy,
and we'll see how they handle it down the stretch.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Here about the rushing, and Kansas City technically had more rushing,
but fifty nine of their one twenty six where scrambles
by Mahomes. So the defense was doing its job to
keep the ball in the one it was in the
running backs hands at bay. And still the team offensively
was able to rush for eighty two yards with what
he marks getting almost seventy. So I look at that
(04:20):
status a little bit of an aberration. But because I
thoughtech the Texans got the tough yards when they needed them.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Well, that's a good point. I think that with the Texans,
they're committed to it. Twenty six carries for marks under
seventy yards. Now, that is not the high yard per
carry average you're looking for, but stick with it. Get
something positive, even a two yard game, something just to
keep it moving forward. And then again if you don't
(04:47):
convert on third down punt. But the Texans were pretty
good on third down on Sunday night. They were eight
of eighteen, and the Chiefs not as good, and then
not as good on fourth down because they missed those
too late when they really with the second one anyway
in the fourth quarter, had to go for it. As
far as the Chiefs rushing the ball, we talked about
this last week. Mahomes is so dangerous with that and
that almost cost the Texans. You know, you trying to
(05:09):
contain him so he doesn't get outside, but then he
can escape up the middle. And Houston's been pretty good
at stopping that kind of thing from opposing quarterbacks. But
it's Mahomes. This is a big part of his game plan,
especially when they're not getting the yards on the ground
from the backs that they're looking for. And even though
he's done all his receivers Andy, there were some I'll
(05:29):
call them, well, they called them drops the statisticians, but
these aren't real drops. These aren't like the guys in
the open field and all he dropped the ball. These
are contested catches. These are Mahomes under pressure, not quite
perfectly on target because he has to rush it or
throw it under duress, and that's what you're looking for,
those types of incompletions.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
It all helped the cause the division is still very
much in play. I know players and coaches have to
do the cliche thing one game at a time, but
when you look at the Cardinals, Raiders and the Colts
who are just completely looking for quarterbacks now with all
of them hurt, there's a real opportunity if you can
win out to win this division. Because Jacksonville still has
(06:09):
to go to Denver among other games.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah, Jacksonville's toughest game is at Denver. I'm impressed with
Jacksonville winning four in a row after the Texans seemingly
removed their souls with the come from behind victory with
Davis Mills doing what he did. But the Jacks bounce back,
they blew out the Chargers and they've won three more
since then. That's impressive. So we'll see how it all
shakes out. They're gonna get the Colts one more time,
(06:33):
but I don't know. Maybe we can get a magical
day out of Philip Rivers in that outing now that
he's the Colts quarterback er seemingly will be. But it is.
It's a schedule that looks pretty good on paper. You
and I have areth No, Hey, you lost to the
Titans last year at home when you thought you had
things going on. They can't look past anybody. Arizona's got
Jakobe Brissett, who has beaten the Texans with three different teams.
(06:57):
He's kind of a Texans killer. So I actually told
Demiko Rance, you want me to do the pre game speech?
I got this one because I know about Jacoby Prissett
in the Houston Texans history, So he didn't take me
up on that. We'll see how it goes Sunday. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Other than Jacoby Brissette, what do you think of the Cardinals?
Sometimes they are that upset special. They've beaten the Cowboys
a couple of times when you thought that was going
to be easy. They've beaten the Rams and the forty
nine ers and the Seahawks when you thought there was
no way. They have a tendency to kind of be
a fly in the ointment.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah, they can lose close games. You know that means
they can win close games because they lost to the
Jags and overtime recently. They're better than their record. You know,
They're one of those teams. I know you are what
your record says you are, but they are dangerous. Brissette
is better than Kyler Murray at this point, it seems
because an unhealthy Murray. And you know, we don't have
(07:49):
to have a big Kyler Murray conversation here, but Brissett
as steady as she goes. Now, he hasn't been a
solid consistent winner in this league, but he can beat you,
like I pointed out, so you better be ready. They
get a lot of talent Trey McBride. I mean, they've
got players, they just have had a terrible season. I'm
wondering what the future is for Jonathan Gannon. This is
his third year. He was hired the same year as
(08:10):
Demiko Ryans and Shane Steiken. I think sneiken' is a
good coach. We talked about that last week. I think
gann is probably a better coach at his record shows.
But this is what it is and you got to
deal with it Sunday, so it'll be fun at noon
at NRG.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
All right, Well, I to be paying attention to that.
Thanks so much, and we'll talk to you next Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Thanks Sandy, looking forward to it.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
All right, that's Mark Vandermer, the voice of the Texans.
Don't mess it up on offense. Let the defense do
the work. And I'm not saying they are gonna win out,
but they could win out. And the game at the
Chargers will be the most difficult of those, and we'll
see how they are because the Colts were the best,
one of the best teams, if not the best team
(08:48):
in the AFC in the first eight weeks of the season,
and with all the injuries and the injuries in the
wrong places, especially at quarterback. They they've gone the other way.
All right, let's talk Spurs. Dylan Harper was fantastic last night.
That conversation's coming up five thirty on the Tickets
