Speaker 1 (00:01):
It is five o'clock.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It is the second hour of the Indy Average Show,
Red Sox and Yankees, about eight or nine minutes away
from first pitch at Yankee Stadium. The Cubs won today,
the Tigers won today, and the Dodgers and the Reds
have the nightcap. We'll talk some baseball coming up here,
and just a little bit after we visit with Mark Vandermere.
In about fifteen minutes, let's talk about Texas and Florida

(00:25):
and it's a huge game for the Longhorns this weekend
as they try to take care of business against a
team that has not performed very well this year or
for the last year. This is a game that Texas
has to have. It's a road game in the Swamp
for the first time. To my knowledge, Texas has never
played at Florida, and if they have, I couldn't go back.
I mean, I can't think of a game where they've

(00:47):
ever played Florida at Florida. Maybe they have in years past,
but if it has been, it's been a while. So anyway,
we'll get to all of that coming up here in
a little bit. But let's hear from Steve Sarkisian and
the approach that he had this week with Arch manning
after the bye week.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
You know, naturally we wanted to build on coming out
of the Sam Houston game because I thought that he
did some really good things for us in that game,
you know, And you know, his ability to push the
ball down the field, his ability to play within rhythm
and timing and get to secondary reads, his ability to

(01:28):
use his legs to his advantage, and our ability to
utilize his legs.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
I think are important. You know.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I think we've got to continue to push the second, third,
and fourth reads.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
I mean, again, we try our best as a coaching
staff to get the first read open and then you
know we're getting when we can't. We've got to have
the ability to get through our progression. And I think
the progress that he made in that last game is
going to be beneficial for him to where not that
he does nowhere to go with the ball on a second, third,

(02:01):
and fourth threes. I think he's well more than equipped,
and nobody.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Prepares better than the Arch.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
He doesn't have to feel rushed, he's not late, and
the timing and the rhythm of his drop and the
timing and the rhythm of where people are in spots
on the field and trusting that to stay in rhythm
for himself, I think is something that he can take
from that game and continue to build upon.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
I kind of agree with the most of all of that,
and that would make a little bit of sense.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
I think Arch is going to be fine. People.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
One thing you have to understand is LSU played Florida
a few weeks ago, and I think it was two
weeks ago, and everybody was up in arms when Brian
Kelly didn't blow out Florida. Florida's not a bad team.
They're not Kentucky, they're not Mississippi State in a bad year,
they're not Vanderbilt. The SEC has loaded with great talent.
Florida just hasn't figured out a way to put it
together yet. Billy and Apier is certainly on the hot

(02:53):
seat there. But this is the type of game that
you just have to go out there and take care
of business in is as quickly as you can. You
have a team that's on the ropes to begin with
before the game even begins, but you have to respect
the fact that they've got a ton of talent and
you just can't walk out there and go, well, you
know they're two and whatever. We're going to win this
game with our eyes closed. If you do that, that's
when you come out with a loss. If they take

(03:15):
care of business, Texas should have a relatively easy, a
relatively comfortable road win ten points, thirteen points, something like that.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
But you can't go in there taking the game for granted.

Speaker 5 (03:27):
Yeah, one hundred percent. And one of the reasons that
I love the Googles Andy is because they can actually
give me.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
They've been telling me exactly when they played.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
So the University of Texas and the Florida Gators have
played four times in their illustrious history. The first time,
Andy was in nineteen twenty four.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
I was negative forty. The second time, no, that was
negative more than negative forty.

Speaker 5 (03:55):
Yeah, that was before DKR. That was at the forty eight.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Ars, probably before the swamp was the swamp.

Speaker 5 (04:01):
Well, it was in Austin. The second time was in
nineteen thirty nine, was also in Austin. The only time
that the Texas Longhorns have played in the swamp in Gainesville, Florida,
Andy nineteen forty that was the last time they played
that they played.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
So we're going on some years here, Yeah, all right, well,
I was right. They haven't played anybody. They haven't played
with anybody that's playing in this game or likely watching
this game's what's probably alive.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
So yeah, we'll go back that far.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
So the Gators record is oh three and.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
One oh three, and that back when we had ties
Ba like kind of like Dallas and Green Bay.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Oh too soon, All right, let's.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Talk about Arch banning a little bit more and Sark's
perspective on him, comparing him a little bit to quinn yours,
but saying they're different guys and that he needs to
play with emotion.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
I think part of it is, you know, Arch has
got more emotion in him than Quinn, and they're different humans,
and that's okay, there's nothing wrong with that. And so
sometimes you know, when you when you throw an interception
or you make a play that that isn't you know,
one that you you wish you made. It's okay to
show a little emotion then, too, like that, that's not

(05:11):
the end of the world. To be some some way,
shape or form. You got to get it out of you,
you know. And Quinn's was his ability was just to
kind of let it flow through. Arch may need to
scream and yell for a second, that's okay too. Like
we've seen, We've seen great competitors for decades that in
their own way celebrate get bit bad plays out pick
up teammates in their own way. And that's why I

(05:33):
think it's important for Arch to be Arch and not
try to be something that he's not.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
And so I hope we're not answering this question how
did Arch respond to the pick Saturday?

Speaker 3 (05:44):
But if it does, I just want him to respond
naturally whatever naturally comes to him, let it happen, and
then move forward.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
And I think that that will serve him best.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
And finally, let's talk about the opponent. They're the Florida Gators.
What are the challenges going up against against Florida?

Speaker 3 (06:02):
They're an excellent defensive front and Sap is a heck
of a player and had a great year last year.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
They've got a really good depth on their front and
they're big.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
You know, they're they're they are not the most you know,
play on an edge penetrating defense. They too gap you
and they do that intentionally because he likes to play.
They play with a lot of split safety looks and
they're a veteran secondary and so they can make things
really muddy in the secondary. They can force a quarterback
to hold the ball and then that's where the pressure
can get there.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
And so you know, the key to the.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Drill is, we got to maintain the line of scrimmage,
We got to run the ball well, and then if
we can get them out of some of that too
high shell look where they're doubling receivers and doing things.
Because you know, raya a ton of respect for Ron Roberts,
their defensive coordinator. He's been doing a long time at
a really high level. And so they're not built necessarily

(06:53):
to always just sack the quarterback.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
They're built to really.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Guard your receivers and then make the pocket feel small
on the quarterback. And so you know, hopefully we can
get him out of some of that stuff. We'll see
how that goes, and then try to attack him as
best we can, you know, and and find some opportunities
for some one on ones down the field.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Don't you just love it when the coach taps the
microphone while he's talking, well.

Speaker 5 (07:14):
I don't know, yeah, that and then that's probably one
of the greatest microphones in the world. The fact that
it's picking up as you're hearing the guy in the background,
you know, Oh, that's irritating.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
But sometimes sometimes the guy's going like this while he's talking.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
You know, that's a little irritating, all right.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
So anyway, they've got an opportunity to win a game
that they should win. If Florida was better than losing
a game like this wouldn't matter as much. But the
fact that you've already lost to Ohio State and you've
got ou coming up next, and you still have to
play Texas A and M and a whole bunch of
other really good teams in the SEC.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
You got to go to the swamp and win this game.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
You have to go to the swamp and you have
to basically re establish yourself and let the country know
and the rest of the SEC know that. Yes, it
didn't look pretty the first couple of weeks, especially with Arch,
but they hung in there against Ohio State at the shoe.
I think the one thing that's not being talked about
the most andy or even being brought up a lot,

(08:19):
is the fact that the Texas Longhorns defense is outstanding.
It's it's as good as it was so far last year,
and it is up there. It is up there as
far as statistic wise. Yeah, they may not be getting
the sacks that Sark wants or you know, getting all
of the turnovers that they want. But the defense, you know,

(08:41):
you could say led by you know, the fantastic sophomore
Colin Simmons junior, Anthony junior, linebacker, Anthony Hill junior, and
then the former walk on Michael Taff at safety. The
defense looks as good as advertised as it was last
year and then going into this year. So if the

(09:02):
defense can can get Dj Lagway, the Florida quarterback rattled.
I know there was a game a couple of weeks
ago that he threw like four or five interceptions. They
get on them and jump on them early. Then you're
gonna see Arch and the Longhorns and Sark establish themselves

(09:23):
and get comfortable. The other thing that I want to
see is I haven't seen the availability yet on if CJ.
Baxter or Contravian Weisner. I'm starting to get a little
worried that I think from Game one CJ only played
a couple of plays and then got hurt, and not
that the other running backs with Jared Gibson and some

(09:44):
of the others with Christian Clark aren't doing well, but
I would really love to have the team at full
strength when it comes to the running.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Back well, And that's that's the big thing.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Because you've got a game on the road at the
Swamp where everybody's trying to resurrect their season for the Gators.
You've got oh You coming up next week, and we
don't know how good OU's going to be or how
good they're not going to be, and how good.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Michael Hopkins is going to play.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Because I don't care how much the surgeon in la
is the greatest surgeon of all time. I can't see
you recovering from a broken bone in your throwing hand
in two weeks. So I don't think that Matier's playing
against Texas, And so you've got a chance to The
lost Ohio State was a big deal only because it
was the number one and number two teams in the

(10:29):
nation at the time, and Ohio State had a great defense.
And you had many mistakes in that game and many
opportunities in that game and still lost by seven on
the road. So now you've got to go back on
the road. And this is the problem with the SEC.
Every week you're playing an NFL team, our NFL type schedule,
and there's a lot of guys on all of these
rosters that are all going to be playing on Sunday Someday,

(10:50):
and so you're playing some really, really good teams. And
that's why I think it's uber important for the Longhorns
to go in there with a sense of purpose. No
silly penalties, no bad turnovers. And you do need your
running backs because to me, that's still very much a
part of the game. If you're not running the football
well and you become one dimensional, that puts a lot of.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
Pressure on Arch.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
And he's had three games now with three you know,
substandard teams since the Ohio State team game, to kind
of get his confidence together, and I'm pretty sure he'll
be fine going into Florida on Saturday.

Speaker 5 (11:26):
Yeah, the Longhorns don't want to play Laxa Daisical. And
you know, even with Florida being one in three, you know,
it's still the Longhorns are still only favored by you know,
a touchdown six and a half. By the way, real quick, Andy,
I don't know if you saw. I thought it was
a little hilarious, Uh, just ironic. John Mattiers, doctor do

(11:47):
you know what his last name is.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
I saw it, but I don't remember.

Speaker 5 (11:51):
It's doctor Shin. Oh nice, So that's just a little funny.
I'm gonna go to a hand doctor whose last name
is Shin. It'd be funny if it was Shitch, you know,
a leg doctor. But I just thought that was a
little that made me chuckle.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
So at least it wasn't mister hand, you know something
like that.

Speaker 5 (12:08):
Yeah, yeah, mister hand as well. But yeah, the Longhorns
just need to with the I don't know if you
want to say down year, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
I don't think to.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Me, the long worn season is gonna at the end
of the year is going to be predicated by how
many key injuries they can they overcome them.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
And I think.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Defensively, Texas is a good football team. But if you're
not scoring twenty one points a game in the SEC,
or maybe even twenty eight, it's gonna be hard for
you to win games, regardless of how good your defense is,
because the rules are such that the offenses are going
to always have the advantage. I think Arch will be
if Arch had Golden, had Matthew gold and Isaiah Bond

(12:49):
to throw the football too I guarantee you they would
have caught some of the passes that other wide receivers
haven't done. And if he had a full contingency of
running backs that he can hand the ball to who
make exceptional plays, they would also make him look better.
So you've got to have your your full compliment of
players when you get to this level of the college

(13:10):
football season and into conference play in whatever league that
you're in.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
It also worries me a little bit because some of
the other potential teams that the Longhorns are playing the
rest of the year look pretty good, you know. And
not that I want every game to be a cakewalk,
but I don't want to go into every game sitting
here thinking, oh, man, I don't think they have a
shot this year, or I don't think they have a
shot at being this potential team. Obviously, with John Mattier

(13:37):
being out, the you know, leans a little bit more
towards Texas. But Andy, we're four weeks into the season.
Five weeks into the season and Vanderbilt is the sixteenth
ranked team in the nation.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
Georgia, fools, They're not gonna be You never.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Know, man, you never the SEC this year.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Andy, They're all good.

Speaker 5 (13:58):
They're all good.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Yeah, even Mississippi state.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Wow, waiting for that. What about Missouri average? All right,
all right, let's talk to Mark Vandammere next. It's five
fourteen on the ticket.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
